The Game

Here you can find the latest posts in this game.

Current Events

The PCs have graduated Maplehurst Academy and chosen a name for their adventuring company: The Vanguard. They moved to Plateau City and found lodgings in the Nightmare Quarter. Now, they have been chosen as part of a mission to enter Lasher Castle to discover the source of a mysterious green glow that has been reported there.

Our Story So Far

The PCs' adventuring careers began while they were still students at Maplehurst Academy. A sudden attack on the school by earth elementals launched a group of students into action! They discovered the reason behind the attack, and successfully guarded one of their fellow students against a repeat attack. They got a reputation in the school for being top-notch future adventurers.

Next, the PCs went on one of Professor Jervis Goodnight's famous "field trips" to a Woldian dungeon. The field trip was more eventful than anticipated, as a disgruntled former pupil of Professor Goodnight attempted to sabotage the PCs. They defeated him, and their reputation grew.

Alas, the PCs had acquired some enemies. A group of rival students stole a mascot from another school and attempted to frame the PCs for the theft. The PCs had to react quickly to return the mascot with none the wiser. The rivalry grew more intense.

Shortly before graduation, a group of Maplehurst students went to the Monster Preserve for a final practical test: track and kill an assigned monster. The PCs completed their task, only to find that a hive of ankhegs had invaded the Preserve from below, turning the pleasantly exciting hunt into a matter of life and death. The PCs defeated the ankhegs, coming to the aid of their rivals in the process.

The rival students formed an adventuring company called the Claws of the Griffon. They moved to Windhorn Hamlet to begin their adventuring career. Meanwhile, the PCs chose the name "Vanguard" for themselves and moved to Plateau City.

NPCs

Maplehurst NPCs

In Plateau City

The Town House is not a person, so technically not an NPC, but it is an important "character" in this part of the PCs' story. [Floor Plan] [Detailed Tour]

Crugeon Uryter is a Perceptor in the Church of Gargul. He is, alas, a walking stereotype of a Priest of Gargul: tall, thin, ascetic, lugubrious.

Tholin Ressler is the PCs' landlord. He is a merchant of some consequence, and has several assistants. He is personable enough, but there are many demands on his time.

Arcia Rookward is one of Master Ressler's assistants. Presently, she is looking for servants that the PCs could hire.

Indrel is a former fighter who now works at the WLA Headquarters.

Graf the Falcon is a High Commander of the WLA, currently leading the expedition into Lasher Castle. He is a high-level rogue.

The Claws of the Griffon

The Claws of the Griffon are adventurers; their rivalry with the Vanguard dates back to their days at Maplehurst. Currently, they reside in Windhorn Hamlet.

Belorin Echt is a half-orc jock/bully, and a former friend of Grell.

Zeliak Hawk is a human jock/bully, and a former friend of Grell.

Holly-Iris Kallier is a halfling, and a spoiled rich girl.

Neave Zvarra is a human girl, and not a bad sort, really. But every adventurer needs an adventuring company.

Belhorn Troud is a minotaur, an odd introvert who never seemed to "click" with any of the other students. He is undoubtedly the brains of the outfit.

Background

The PCs are recent graduates of Maplehurst Academy, a boarding school for the children of adventurers. It is located on the Second Plateau, on the road between Gnowsy Overdale and Middleden.

It began as an estate--a manor house with stables and other outbuildings--but new buildings have been added over the years. There’s a mishmash of architectural styles, reflecting not only different time periods, but different Woldian races as well.

There is a Lower School and an Upper School. The Lower School is for the younger kids, say 8-12. Their instruction is elementary-school-style, with one instructor teaching all subjects for the class for that year. The Upper School has different instructors for different subjects. Lower School and Upper School kids share dormitory, dining, and recreation facilities.

The original estate had: a manor house, a dower house, a carriage house, stables, a gatehouse, a chapel, an outdoor kitchen, and miscellaneous outbuildings and sheds. The (indoor) kitchen of the original manor house--already pretty large--has been expanded to cope with the challenges of feeding an entire school. The original formal dining room has also been expanded to serve as the school’s dining hall. There is a smaller dining room for faculty. The rest of the original manor house is classrooms and offices.

The original dower house has been converted to faculty housing. The gatehouse is now a residence for the Headmaster (or Headmistress) and family. The carriage house and stables are still there, and still serve their original purpose. The chapel also serves its original purpose, but it has been expanded to the point where the original structure is difficult to pick out. The outdoor kitchen was torn down.

New construction (since the school’s founding) includes two dormitories, one for girls and one for boys. Each year, a junior member of the faculty (of the appropriate sex) is assigned to live in one of the dorms and keep an eye on things. This is not a popular position.

Also built for the school are the library building and a classroom building, which houses most of the Lower School classes. Both buildings also contain faculty offices.
