DM RobC - "I can put a few arrows into them if they're going to stand that close"  d20+13=20 ; d20+13=19 ;
Thursday May 2nd, 2019 7:36:20 AM

Atlas heads towards the flame wall but doesn't pass through it. He does notice that the area on the other side of the flame looks particularly 'spikey'. That is, the 'stone's' look like they have 'spikes'.

Armand is feeling a little trapped too.

Elyngael has plenty of arrows up her sleeve. What she wouldn't give for a target.

Neshi tries to head out through the murder hole, however is unable to squeeze through such a small opening (Sorry, even small a person small couldn't fit through something smaller than an arrow slit. Nice thought though)

Osul transforms into a huge air elemental. He can't make it through the murder hole either nor down the corridor (A Huge 32ft tall elemental won't fit in a 10ft tall corridor.)

Owen ceases concentration on the Wall of Fire, and then no allies to back him up, Owen considers what to do.

The apes look around but still can't see Owen.

Atlas waits, a bit impatiently since he is worried about Owen. As he sees Neshi transform he barks, "Go get em Neshi!" Then he sees 'Osul transform and he winces as his head hits the ceiling.

Looking down, he studies the spikes further. Do they go into the fire or just on the other side of it? Can he stick his sword through the fire to see what happens if he pokes at them? All this goes through his mind as he contemplates what to do once the fire goes away.

What had been a highly defensive position has now become a box the party are having trouble escaping. Elyngael is at a loss and Atlas is feeling impatient. Armand though puts to finding a solution to this problem. Would it be possible to make a safe bridge with the bed?

Osul - still huge - is still unable to squeeze through the doorway or the hall. Rather than stand still he takes a moment to dismiss the spike stones that block the path between the two rooms. (Highlight to display spoiler: {Post on May 1st was: "Osul quickly follows Neshis lead and becomes a huge air elemental". Huge creatures are 15x15. He could go down the hall using squeezing rules, but that would mean half speed and taking fire damage for every 5ft})

With the spikes out of the way Neshi is able to make his way freely down the hall. As a fire elemental he has no problems at all with the Wall of Fire, though isn't able to rise over it.

Owen drops his invisibility and takes a shot at the orangutan. Fire has proven to be a very effective tactic, however in this instance the ray goes wide.

The orangutan finally has a target. He moves towards Owen with mindless agression. Fortunately, however, these orangutans are more suited to magic than hand-to-hand contact. It misses Owen by a long-shot.

The baboon has slightly better luck. He fires two arrows at Owen. One hits however fails to penetrate the stoneskin spell protecting Owen. (Hit AC22. Nat20. Crit confirmed on AC20. 6pts damage to be taken from Stoneskin)

Atlas chugs an Everything Potion. He debates the benefits of a Protection from Energy spell vs a Resist Energy spell. A Protection from Energy spell would almost all of the damage from a Wall of Fire spell, but the spell won't last very long. A Resist Energy spell will protect against Fire for a longer time. It may or may not protect against all of the damage however. He goes with Resist Energy (Fire). Atlas has Resist Energy(Fire/10) for the next 30mins.

Osul changes shape into a better sized elemental. He flies through the flames. (Osul to make a DC22 Will Save to disbelieve the Wall of Fire. Osul takes 16pts damage. Pass=3pts. For ending/starting his round next to the Wall he also takes 6pts (unless he passed the same in which case it is only 1pt)

In fire elemental form, Neshi makes it through the Wall with nothing but a warm feeling - which is pretty mild when you consider he is in the shape of a fire elemental right now (Neshi gets to make a DC22 Will Save to disbelieve the Wall of Fire. It makes no difference this round, but might be useful knowledge later)

Armand is fine with the heay but wants to help Elyngael. The pair drag a bed over and lower it across the flames. Getting past the Wall might be half of the battle. There's still the wall at the other end as well as the heat that radiates from it.

Neshi tries to reason with the apes but all is does is leave them shaken. Trying to get them to stop now, or change their attitude, would require around 10rounds (1min) of talk.

Owen goes with the tried and true approach of a magic missile.

The orangutan beats its fists on Owen doing negligible damage (Owen takes 2pts damage)

The baboon has similar luck - which is to say none. Neither of its arrows hit anything but the wall.

The Wall will last another 10rounds.

DM RobC - "What to do, what to do"
Tuesday May 7th, 2019 7:46:39 AM

With Armand dispelling the Wall of Fire (illusory mind you) it opens the way for the rest of the party to gather in the mess hall.

After that it is hardly a fair fight. The mindless orangutan has no real offence, no spell casting ability, and minimal defenses. Even if it manages to strike with all its might it wouldn't be making any but a slight dent against the Stoneskin spells currently in play. Truth be told, if it stays alive for more than 10seconds it should consider itself lucky.

The baboon does marginally better, but with no support it is only a matter of time before it also drops dead.

Removing the fire certainly opened the way for the party. With it gone though, it also means there is nothing between the party and whatever else is alive in this place.

The party start to make their way around the corridor, spread out so as to avoid any concentrated attack.

Atlas takes the lead and scouts ahead whilst Neshi and Elyngael cover the rear. He doesn't see any traps nor hear anything untoward.

If there is anyone alive around here then chances are they heard either the alarm or the fighting. Yeah, the fighting was pretty loud with all the apes screaming from the imaginary fire.

Maybe there isn't anyone left? Maybe you took care of them all? (Highlight to display spoiler: {I don't think anyone believes that!})

DM RobC - "I suggest we look in these two rooms first before we get surrounded"
Monday May 13th, 2019 7:24:32 AM

The party take stock of their remaining resources. You actually have a surpising number of spells at your disposal.

Atlas goes to the nearest door and puts his ear against it. He can't hear anything on the other side.

The rest of the group set up a perimeter in case they are about to get surrounded or should enemies appear from somewhere unseen.

The tension is high but quickly fades as Atlas opens the door to find an empty kitchen. Cooking supplies and food neatly placed on shelves, knives laid out in size order, and clean(-ish) cloths, all on top of some wooden benches. There are a few hessian sacks underneath the benches. Nothing alive in here though.

Another good room however if you need a defensive position.

Owen investigates the sacks while Neshi does a quick magic scan. The sacks contain different food stuffs: some vegetables, nuts and berries, flour. The bags feel about right and you can't feel anything else hidden in them. Neshi doesn't find anything magical in the room. Still, it will be nice to have some snacks for the road.

The party prepare the same approach for the next room.

The door is locked and takes two bashes to get in. Inside it looks like another barracks, only this one is much nicer. The room is furnished with comfortable looking single occupant beds, much nicer than the rank and file troops have. There is a distinct lack of enemies and weapons in the room.

There is another door along the east side of the room.

The party have a quick check over where to go. True, they could head out of the room and check the hallway, however if anything is in the next room they might find themselves flanked. Then again... what is beyond the door?

Atlas listens against the door however doesn't hear anything. It takes two good bashes to get the door open.

No sooner is the door open than a very large tiger is right in his face.

The enemy knew you were coming.

You count a huge tiger, three orangutans, three dire apes, three baboons, and an air elemental.

The tiger slashes and bites at Atlas. Only the bite hits but it gets a firm hold on him (Hit AC38. Miss AC22 and AC23. Atlas takes 22pts damage + 5pts fire damage. Grab CMB: 29. Atlas is grappled!)

The orangutans send fireballs into the room.

Fireball 2: Everyone but Neshi: 30pts fire damage. Ref Save vs DC17 for half.
Fireball 3: Everyone but Neshi: 27pts fire damage. Ref Save vs DC17 for half.

If memory serves the orangutans you fought in the past only had 1 fireball memorised.

The dire apes are spread out, perhaps having learnt that it is not good to clump up. They fire arrows towards Atlas, and fortunately only one hits (Hit AC24. Miss AC23 and AC15. Atlas takes 14pts damage)

The air elemental casts a Call Lightning spell, sending a bolt of electricity down on Atlas (Atlas takes 15pts electric damage. Ref Save vs DC16 for half)

The babooons head for the door at the south and exit out of sight.

Neshi responds with two fireballs right back through the door (Highlight to display spoiler: {Haste gives another attack made as part of a full attack action. It can't give a second standard action. So basically this is 1 standard fireball + 1 hero point fireball})

Elyngael lines up the air elemental and shoots three arrows at it. She has line of sight however the air elemental gets the benefit of having soft cover (additional +4 to AC). One arrow hits but the other two sail wide. Khan moves to protect the doorway.

Atlas fights back as best he can against the huge tiger. His first attack is a good one however he is so distracted by the grapple that the other two miss.

The enemy act...

Elyngael took some shots at the air elemental and it doesn't seem happy about it. "Get her!"

The orangutans all turn their attention to Elyngael, targetting her with Confusion spells
(Elyngael to make 3 Will saves vs DC17. Fail any of them and be subject to a confusion spell)

The tiger releases its grip of Atlas to give a full attack once more. Both claws hit (Hit AC33, AC27. Miss AC23. Atlas takes 19pts + 21pts + 4pts fire + 5pts fire)

With Atlas now in reach one of the dire apes can now move close enough to attack him as well. Wardd must be smiling on Atlas as the claw just misses him.

The others fire off a few arrows. With the tiger in the way the party all benefit from soft cover.
DA2 aims at Armand (Hit AC27. Miss AC17. Armand takes 10pts)
DA3 aims at Armand (Miss AC14. Hit AC27 - Nat20. Crit not confirmed on AC15. Neshi takes 10pts)

The air elemental flies closer to the group and then turns into a large whirlwind.

Owen grits his teeth. He's been more seriously wounded in this fight than he has been in any other fight with the Wardens, combined. That means he needs to step up his game, to rise to the challenge. It may also mean that he needs to take a great risk. And he can think of no better Warden to take as a model of courage than Atlas.

With his mind set, he uses his Invisibility Field to wink out of sight, then moves cautiously forward to Q13, standing shoulder to shoulder with Atlas. He defensively casts (DC 23 concentration check: 35) Crushing Despair in a cone that should affect DA1, DA2, TI, and Otaktay. They need to make a DC 20 Will save or suffer -2 to lots of important things for 10 minutes. Owen follows that up with a heroic effort: He defensively casts (DC 25 concentration check: 39) a second spell, Cone of Cold, that envelops DA1, DA2, TI, Otaktay, and O2 in a blast of frigid air. They must make a DC 21 Reflex save or take 33 cold damage (a save still deals half damage).

Neshi cracks open an elemental gem to summon a large earth elemental. Atlas has no intention of falling back or stepping aside however. Highlight to display spoiler: {I've placed it behind Atlas. It has 10ft reach so can hit past him}

The elemental manages to hit the tiger with one attack.

Despite all of his attacks, only one of Atlas' strikes connects on the tiger.

Elyngael gets very confused as to what is going on, however that is short live. Armand had prepared for such an event and snaps her right out of it. Khan keeps up his guard.

Armand Holy Smites the apes deciding that they must be evil creatures. Are they though? They had a lot of time while the party was off on adventures and rather than kill anyone at the Tree they instead chose to poison it to encourage people to move on. The spell seems to work nonetheless. The two dire apes are blind while the others take a little damage.

Owen goes invisible and casts a few spells. His crushing despair spell affects both of the dire apes. His cone of cold hits two of the apes, another dodges some of it, and the tiger and elemental avoid it altogether Highlight to display spoiler: {Evasion=No Damage on a successful save}

The enemy act...

The Tiger keeps attacking Atlas. (Hit AC33, AC26. Miss AC16. Atlas takes 25pts + 4pts fire and 17pts + 2pts fire)

Dire Ape 1 may be blind but it can still try and hit Atlas. It can tell where he is but that isn't enough to hit a moving target. It's claws slash at the air in front of Atlas' face.

Dire Ape 2 can't see anything, and that poses a real problem for someone with a bow. It feels it's way around the wall.

Dire Ape 3 can see though, and fire two shots at Atlas. One hits (Atlas takes 11pts damage)

The elemental calls down another lightning bolt on Atlas (Atlas takes 9pts electric. Ref Save vs DC16 for half)

The orangutans keep up their orders and attack Elyngael. This time with Magic Missiles (Elyngael takes 16pts + 15pts + 14pts)

Atlas makes his way across the room, downing a potion as he does so. He swings his blade once more but hits nothing but air, and it's not even the air of the whirlwind.

Armand finds himself relocated. He tries to cast a spell defensively but finds it hard to concentrate in this new environment and loses the spell.

Owen maintains his invisibility - the second last time he can today - and tries a Phantasmal Killer spell. The whirlwind believes it, however does't die from its effects.

Khan attacks heavily, however doesn't succeed in tripping his target.

Neshi feels a little sparky from the lightning bolt and responds with his last fireball. All take the full brunt of his response.

The earth elemental positions itself closer to the action

The enemy act...

Armand is a the bigger threat to Otaktay right now than Atlas is. Otaktay and the Dire Ape flank him to coordinate their attacks. (Hit AC33, AC24 and AC24. Armand takes 6 + 9 + 15 damage). Both have 10ft reach.

The orangutans each cast a Displacement spell and spread out a bit more (Ranged attacks have a 50% miss chance)

The baboons start to circle Khan and attack. Dragging him to the ground looks like the main tactic.

Armand goes to total defense (raising AC +4, reflected in header).

And then activates Divine Presence. Any creature wishing to attack Armand must make a DC 18 Will save or ignore him. This applies to all allies in 30 feet of Armand.

Divine Presence (Su): At 8th level, you can emit a 30-foot aura of divine presence for a number of rounds per day equal to your cleric level. All allies within this aura are treated as if under the effects of a sanctuary spell with a DC equal to 10 + 1/2 your cleric level + your Wisdom modifier. These rouds do not need to be consecutive. Activating this ability is a standard action. If an ally leaves the area or makes an attack, the effect ends for that ally. If you make an attack, the effect ends for you and your allies.

Armand goes on the defensive. The total defensive. (Highlight to display spoiler: {Total Defense is a standard action, as is activating Divine Presence. I'm giving you both, but note that both have passed their Will Saves anyway})

Khan manages to bite the baboon that trips him up. He returns the favor so that they are both now prone.

Elyngael does a good job of turning the baboon into a pin cushion

Neshi continues the fight with a Cone of Cold. It's enough to knock off both of the orangutans. (Highlight to display spoiler: {AoOs are provoked from moving out of threatened squares. Moving into them, such as the square at the end of the EE's reach, doesn't})

Out of sight, out of possibility of dying. That looks to be Owen's motto as he goes with a Greater Invisibility spell.

Atlas finally gets a few good swings in. The first isn't as powerful as he'd have liked, but still good (Elemental body: Immune to crits)

With so many people making attacks it looks like only Armand is benefitting from the Divine Presence.

The enemy act...

The dire ape goes full attack on Armand (Hit AC28. Miss AC20. Hit AC29. Armand takes 13pts + 14pts damage!)

Otaktay defensively casts a Flame Strike spell on Atlas (Concentration check: 25=Pass. Atlas takes 16pts fire damage + 16pts normal damage). He then takes a 5ft step closer to Armand.

BA1 and BA2 make full attacks against Khan. One managed to hit for a little bit (HitAC23. Khan has -4AC from being prone and -2AC from being grappled. Khan takes 4pts damage). They each take 5ft steps to clear the doorway.

BA3 maintains its grapple on Khan and moves him out into the hall! (CMB: 23+5=28)

Elyngael gets a few good shots in, warning the baboons to keep away from the big cat. Khan bites back at the baboon attacking him causing it to shriek and it falls prone to the floor.

Owen uses his hasted speed to move to I18. He doesn't like what he sees, but he's not sure how helpful he'll be. He fires two Scorching Rays at whichever baboons Elyngael hasn't dropped yet, missing with one but narrowly hitting with the other (I forgot to add Bless! That makes 18, which should hit.). It deals 14 fire damage.

The lightning from Neshi's fingers sizzles through the dire ape, yet misses Otaktay completely. The elemental misses its attack, even with the flanking.

Armand uses the last of his channels to heal those in the main group.

Elyngael moves to stay in sight of the baboons. She pings one of them with an arrow, but it still stands. Khan manages to break free from the grapple!

Owen decides that now is the time to get in the fight. He makes his way out into the hallway and with his scorching ray does some serious burn damage to the same baboon. It's breathing is ragged, and blood is dripping to the ground. But it still stands!

The enemy act...

The baboons keep up the relentless assault on Khan. (Khan has -4 AC for still being prone)

BA2: Miss AC18+2. AC12+2

Otaktay casts a cure spell. This time the spell goes off smoothly.

The dire ape is on death's door but it isn't going to go quietly. It keeps following Atlas and Armand, attacking him through his divine presence spell. (Hit AC32. Armand takes 13pts. Miss AC23 on Atlas)

Armand tries to defensively cast a spell, but that ape is just too darn distracting. The problem is quickly remedied by Atlas who separates the ape's head from its body.

Neshi presses the attack on Otaktay with an Ice Storm spell.

Elyngael keeps up her attack on the baboons. She is able to drop one of them quite quickly and then and harms another one. Khan rips into the prone third one but fails to kill it.

Owen tries to help out but his spell fails to hit everything. Better to miss everything than to hit Khan though.

The enemy act...

The baboons refuse to let Khan be. The baboon on the floor is unable to land a strike. The attacks from the other baboon go straight to Khan's chest. The baboons gives whoops of joy and turn to face Elyngael. With Owen being invisible they see no other foe.

If Otaktay went through the south wall Armand will take a single hasted move action and go through the doors to stop at AD19. I'm assuming they were not locked as the baboon's went through them and opening a door I believe is a free action. If Armand see's Otaktay he will then cast Flame Strike on him.
DC 18 Reflex save for 1/2 damage. 37 points damage, 1/2 is flame 1/2 is divine.

If Otaktay went through the west wall Armand will double move to arrive at about AO13 and then take a swift action to open the door, if it's not locked.

DM RobC - "You shall be avenged!"
Thursday May 30th, 2019 7:33:02 AM

The party aren't going to let up now. Khan will be given a proper service and respect will be paid. That much is for sure. But first there is a debt to be repaid.

The party start spreading out to search. Atlas storms down the corridor to peer around the corner. Elyngael is not going to let her vengeance cool. She nocks and arrow and continues right past Atlas. Gargul help the next ape she runs into.

The corridor snakes around two smaller rooms. The doors of which are closed. Nothing can be heard behind them, although that may not mean much at all.

Armand meanwhile is in pursuit of the creature that caused all of this. When he opens the door though he finds no sign of Otaktay nor the elemental. Druids and their ability to shift forms. As an earth elemental he could be anywhere right now - even right beneath the ground in this room.

What Armand does find in this room is all manner of alchemical equipment. Two large benches covered in iron tools and jars with assorted colored liquids. No doubt this is where Otaktay does his foul 'cooking'. The smell in the room is very pungent. Breathing in the air you get a burning sensation in your nostrils and a real metallic taste in your mouth.
