"I am glad to be back, too," the Jotun says sincerely. "I like talking with you. Say, you haven't needed a name so far, you say. But, may I lend you a name? I'm thinking, um, 'Dorrvakt'," suggests Mundhildur. "It means 'keeper of the door.' One who opens and closes. A way to the pathway. Dorrvakt. Would you like to try that out?" she asks.

"What lies beyond the door? Are there things good to see, to learn? Dangers? Rewards? Earlier you asked me, Dorrvakt (is it all right if I call you that?), you asked, 'Why would you say the password?' Is it dangerous to say it? I guess, part of the answer to your question, though, is this: Curiosity. We would like to see what is on the other side. That's how people are, I suppose. And you told me a word that you thought might help in opening the door, I think. How would I use that word? Or would I need to use what it represents?"

DM Steve -- I suppose it depends in part on what the puzzle needs
Saturday June 5th, 2021 1:18:50 PM

Asimov tries to light the unlit sconces.

Mundhildur talks to the door.

Zeoll holds the rope securing Munchildur and says, "You be careful, Asimov and Miss Honor!"

The twins keep a wary eye out for danger.

Honor considers Asimov's questions about sconces.

Elron asks about the door.

Asimov says, "One of the sconces is gone and there are no remains. Do you think the drow might have a new sconce we could replace it with?"

Honor replies, "I suppose it depends in part on what the puzzle needs. A specific sconce? Any sconce? Any flame, regardless of what's holding it? Any light source, flame or no? There are too many possibilities."

The sconces that are lit include brackets attached to the walls with torches that appear to be permanently burning. The sconces that are not lit include the brackets, but no torches. The one that is missing does not even provide the bracket.

Mundhildur talks with the door, still in underwold but explaining what she says to her companions.

The door answers. . . "Well, I am not sure what I will do with a name, but I thank you for offering me one. Dorrvakt sounds wonderful. I would be happy to try it. So, how do I use a name anyway? Oh, my -- how do I use your name? You told it to me and I haven't said it. Is that rude? I hope not. In any case, keeper of the door is a good name for me, or perhaps it's a good title for me. I will use Dorrvakt."

"What lies beyond the door? Are there things good to see, to learn? Dangers? Rewards?"

The door answers. . . "What lies beyond the door? I have no idea. I can only see the room you are in, and not all of that. As you can appreciate, without the ability to move around the amount I can see is quite limited. So are there dangers there? I assume there are, since I have certainly seen dangers in the room here."

"Earlier you asked me, Dorrvakt (is it all right if I call you that?), you asked, 'Why would you say the password?' Is it dangerous to say it? I guess, part of the answer to your question, though, is this: Curiosity. We would like to see what is on the other side. That's how people are, I suppose."

The door answers. . . "I told you a word? Was it the right word? I don't think so. Do you use it, or what it represents? And as to why would you say the password -- well, why would you? If you say the password, it just summons monsters to fight you. If I say the password, I can open the door. Oh, but I don't know the password. And I can't remember telling it to you. So, if I told you the password, I should have opened. And if you tell me the password, you have to fight a monster. And I would like to see what is on the other side, too. This room is really quite -- well, limited. Finite. Bounded. Little, meager, sparse. . . eh, boring, really. But I am stuck with it. And lately, hardly anyone even comes here. So I would love to see what's on the other side. Maybe there are people. Nice people, like you. Not the rude people who have started coming."

"And you told me a word that you thought might help in opening the door, I think. How would I use that word? Or would I need to use what it represents?"

"No, I'm sure if I say the right word, the door opens. That's the way I was made. But I can't remember the word. That's also the way I was made. Why, really, if you think about it, I don't think the people who made me were all that nice. Oh, but I have you here now, and you seem very nice. I don't want you to fight a monster. I'm glad you're here. I haven't talked to anyone for so long now."

The map is here.

Since there is only one other party member who understands directly what they are saying (she is interpreting, though), Mundhi says, "Also, I could say, for instance, to my friend, Asimov," and she turns toward the technical wizard on the team and says,

"Asimov, this is my new friend Dorrvakt. He watches over the doorway. And Dorrvakt, this is my friend of many weeks Asimov. He is very creative, and he made that man of iron over there. He is trying to fix some of the wall sconces for you. Say hello to each other."

She waits until the two exchange a greeting. Making friends can take several steps.

Asimov says, "Hi, Dorrvakt" to the door

Devices prepared
0: nanobot repair capsule (mending),light emitter (light), corrosive pistol (acid splash), open slot (can take time to prepare something)
1st: fire-handling gloves (produce flame) - x used, wrist rockets (magic missile) , Flaming glove (burning hands)-x used, open slot (can take time to prepare something)
2nd: rapid repair nanobot capsule (make whole) , rapid repair nanobot capsule (make whole)

Asimov says to everyone, "If all we need is a light source then I can use my light emitter on either a bracket or the space on the wall, the problem is if the door closes when the light goes out then we would only have 40 minutes until the light wears out assuming some of you other folks have ways to magically produce light. Aternatively we could secure torches or everburning torches if we had them in the 2 remaining brackets and as I said try to rig something together for the 8th slot that will allow us more time to explore the next area than 40 minutes, unless of course we can ask our drow hosts to keep replacing the lights until we return, assuming that formation which resembles something I cannot say does indeed open Dorrvakt

The Twins introduce themselves if asked. It's unclear if the conversation is being translated for them. If so they wonder aloud if they had been on the right track earlier and just had to keep killing spiders until they stopped appearing. If not then their thoughts would have to remain forever a mystery.

Yes, Twins, Mundhildur is translating everything, so they do not need to wonder aloud and can avoid saying the word 'spiders' which everyone was reminded multiple times NOT to say. ;-)

Asimov has given a greeting to Dorrvakt. Once Dorrvakt has answered Asimov, then Mundhildur continues the discussion. "So, the password you told me? It is not the one written next to you. Let me show you something, then you can perhaps help answer your question."

She takes out a dagger, and puts it on a part of her forearm well away from any major vein or artery. "If I take my knife, and go like this," and she makes a small nick of perhaps a third of an inch, and squeezes it lightly. As the red fluid begins to cover a small area of her skin, she says, "You see this red liquid? What do you call that?"

Mundhildur talks with the door and tries to help it make friends with the others.

Zeoll remains cautious, but encouraging.

Asimov greets the door, and continues to ponder how to handle the sconces.

The Twins ask about earlier, but Mundhildur stops them fearing they will say "spider".

Elron makes a joke.

Honor giggles a little at Elron's joke.

OOC: If your character is in the room, please put them in the room on the map.

Dorrvakt says hello to Asimov when greeted. "That is an impressive iron man. You want to fix the sconces? It is not as bright now as it used to be. I think I would like that. It is good to be able to see, especially if there is something interesting happening."

Dorrvakt tells the Twins it does not understand "on the right track."

Mundhildur continues. "So, the password you told me? It is not the one written next to you. Let me show you something, then you can perhaps help answer your question." She takes out a dagger, and puts it on a part of her forearm well away from any major vein or artery. "If I take my knife, and go like this," and she makes a small nick of perhaps a third of an inch, and squeezes it lightly. As the red fluid begins to cover a small area of her skin, she says, "You see this red liquid? What do you call that?"

"Why would you do that? Doesn't it hurt? And now you're dripping blood. I suppose there's plenty on the floor already, though. Just dried."

Elron also says hi to Doorvakt. "Hi, Elron, I'm Dorrvakt. I'm glad to have met you, and that clown sounds like a friendly fellow as well. Do you think he'll come visit me?"

Dorrvakt also asks about a variety of things. He asks Asimov how to make a metal man. He asks Mundhildur if she's ok, and how come she's been two different sizes. Through Mundhildur, he asks the Twins their names (which starts a whole new discussion about how to use names -- Dorrvakt is still unsure of this); he asks Elron what was behind the door he went through; and he says hello to Honor. "I am called Dorrvakt. And what is your name?"

I said it just before I lost consciousness." She pulls a torch out of her bag. "Here, Asimov, a torch for you."

"But the door did not open when you said it, or when I said it. Perhaps it has something to do with blood." She holds her forearm against the door, and moves it so that a bit of her blood smears a few inches.

"Or do you suppose it is related to the word? But a different one? Lifeblood? What do you suppose might help you recall the key to opening the door, so that you and we can see what is on the other side?"

Again, she interprets for the others, speaking first in underwold, then in common.

The Twins suspect the door would be difficult to break.

Elron suggests fortnight.

Dorrvakt is upset that there is talk of breaking him. He says, "No, I don't know where brackets would be. . . Please. . . No, that wasn't it. . . Fortnight. . . "Ah, wait!" exclaims Mundhildur. "We should try The Question Game!®"

She leans her longspear against the side of the door. "We played it all the time as I was growing up. Someone thinks of a - something. Maybe about a particular person. Or an animal. Or, an idea. Or a thing. Anything, really. Like a rutabaga. Or Tors Larson. Or clouds. Or the City of Stones. Or, losing a drinking bet. Or climbing a wall. Again, anything. Once the person decided what was in their mind, then we would ask questions. 'Is it a place?' 'No' 'Is it a challenge?' 'No. Well, could be at times, I suppose.' 'Is it a person?' 'Yes!' 'Do we know this person?' 'Well, some of you do.' 'Is it a Jotun?' 'Yes, but there's more.' 'A lady Jotun?' 'No.' 'So a male?' 'Yes.' 'Tall or short?' 'Yes.' 'Yes? Both!?' 'Yes.'

"So we'd keep asking, until we finally found out who it was. He is alive. He lives in Storang. He is a leader. His name is Lars Torston, who fought the white dragon Vorus to submission eight years ago."

She looks around to see if people are following her.

"Mainly you ask yes or no questions, but we played it sort of flexible on that."

"So, what do you think? Dorrvakt, if we ask you questions, do you suppose your memory might be nudged to help you remember what the secret word or phrase is? Do you like games? A riddle is a type of game, right?

"And friends, could you each ask a question? Or more than one question if you want, and we might work our way toward a solution. Sound all right? Zeoll, you've been around a long time. Do you have some good questions to start us out?"

Elron doesn't trust their hosts, and suggests the group figure out just what they've learned. He later says he's willing to play the word game.

The Twins start saying anything that comes to mind trying to guess it.

Asimov cobbles together a passable sconce -- functional, not ornamental.

Honor thinks maybe talking to the drow is the best idea.

Zeoll is quiet.

As Munhildur and the Twins make their suggestions, Dorrvakt repeats their words to see if any work.

"Rutabaga. . . I whom the dogs trust. . . Tors Larson. . . dog you all night. . . clouds. . . under my arm. . . the City of Stones. . . so many new years days. . . losing a drinking bet. . . to mark per year. . . climbing a wall. . . my fingers hurt. . . anything -- oh, sorry, that wasn't a guess was it?. . . from stroking the sun. . . Storang. . . these sulky strays. . . leader. . . lick. . . Vorus. . . my tongues. . . my wounds clean. . . Game." Dorrvakt switches to explaining in answer to Mundhildur's question, "The Riddle Game is a formalized guessing game, a contest of wit and skill in which players take turns asking riddles. The player that cannot answer loses. Riddle games occur frequently in mythology and folklore as well as in literature. It is important to understand that in many cultures or contexts, people are not actually expected to guess the answers to riddles: they may be told by the riddler, or learn riddles and their answers together as they grow up. . . I am willing to have you ask me questions, but I do not think I have learned any riddles. Oh, and none of those words opened the door, either." The last observation is tinged with regret.

Asimov lights a torch in his homemade sconce.  The door does not open.  The Twins and Elron try several words each.  Dorrvakt repeats each of the words.  The door does not open.  Zeoll goes in and tries to open the door, but the door does not open.  Honor asks a number of questions.  Dorrvakt happily answers.

"I really don't remember the last time I opened.  I used to open a lot, and then people stopped coming.  I don't remember ever seeing a room other than this one.  So I don't know if there were torches... or furniture... or rugs... and those weren't the word, either.  There was a time when lots of people would pass.  Sometimes just a few, sometimes many.  Not many would come into the room while I was closed, though.  Sometimes they had weapons, but not usually.  Lots of them, yound and old.  Which of them said the password?  Lots of them, and then I would repeat it.  But they didn't stick around to talk much.  Some would -- some that came this way a lot.  But not many."

Asimov tries saying three words including one similar to the word the party has determined is unsafe to say. He asks about the people who used to talk with Dorrvakt.

Mundhildur is engaged with the problem, but doesn't know what to do.

Honor points out that guessing one word out of millions is improbable, and that the party needs to try something different.

The Twins offer to read from a varied list of words.

Zeoll and Elron are quiet.

Dorrvakt repeats the words Asimov said, then "Nope. That wasn't it, either. . . The people who talked to me? Mostly they were either young or came this way a lot. Only the young ones talked to me the first time we met. But some of the people who came by frequently realized they could ask about what I'd seen. Oh, and I suppose some of them were asking me to spy for them, but I talked to them anyway. I like talking to people. But I liked the young ones better -- their conversations were more interesting. But mostly people would just ask me some question, and I'd say the answer, and they'd move on."

Zulok and Ecylndryl have stayed fairly close this time, and listen attentively to Honor. They have not heard of anything like that, but perhaps Pellabrina would be able to find such a thing in her records. It may take a few days to find out.

Elron asks what question they should ask.
Dorrvakt says lots of questions will do, it's the answer that's important. But he doesn't remember the answer.

Zeoll sniffs around the door and listens. He asks if the door can see and even read?
Zeoll does not smell or hear anything of note, he just sees the writing above the door in a language he's not familiar with. Dorrvakt says he can see, and read, but he can't see much because he can't move.

Asimov tries a few other words in frustration.
Dorrvakt repeats each word or phrase, but the door does not open.

Mundhildur ashs what monsters attached the party and what made the webs that had been in the room.

As the group heads into the corridor, the diminished light is a bit unnerving. Once they have left Dorrvakt thirty or forty feet behind, the door closes with a soft click. The air in the corridor appears to be getting thicker -- not that it feels thicker, but that as the party watches a mist forms in the air and condenses into a figure in front of the group. No, it's not water, more like smoke. The figure is barely visible in the dim light. A young elf maiden, perhaps the equivalent of a human nine-year-old. She beckons to the party.

Her words are in a language few of the group understand, but everyone feels the meaning of the words nonetheless. "Are you here to save us?" The words echo softly in the corridor.

Zeoll wipes away the message written in the condensation, not wanting to alert the coming *person* who or whatever she may be.

The Twins suggest setting up an ambush, or perhaps scouting to get a watch.

Honor points out the problems with setting an ambush in a straight corridor.

Elron checks the door they came in.

Mundhildur moves to the far ens of the corridor.

Zeoll wipes away the message on the floor/ He notes they were told they are safe in the corridor..

It takes very little time to explore the corridor end to end. It is short and straight, although the affect it has on the light makes it feel longer. Apparently, whatever magic maintains Dorrvakt also keep the door in good repair -- Elron discovers he is able to open it easily. Mundhildur finds the large wooden door at the other end to be heavy but also unstuck.

After a few tense moments of watching, nothing appears. Perhaps the party is safe here, as the ghost said.

Asimov says, "I wonder what the writing is watching and waiting for."

He keeps a sharp eye out for anything. (perception: 15)

"I'll see if I can open this door. Everyone ready? Any questions?"

Mundhildur will wait a moment to see if her friends are ready, and if they have questions or such. If there are no strenuous objections, she simply opens the door in the appropriate direction, using any handles or knobs if present. She looks through, lighting ahead with her torch. If no obvious threat shows its face, she probes the floor ahead with her left foot, not initially placing her full weight. Should the floor seem solid, she'll step forward.

Zeoll urges Mundhi to wait a sec for a Guidance cantrip, and after that he recasts Dancing Lights to send on ahead once the door is open.

With Zeoll having cast his guidance and dancing light spells, Honor giving the go ahead, and apparently everyone else ready, or at least voicing no objections, Mundhildur opens the door at the end of this dark passage.

The old taur has his dancing lights ready to dance in as soon as the door opens.

He uses his bard's voice to make the dancing lights talk as the party waits.

Purple Light: "Knock Knock!"
Blue Light: "Who's there?"
Purple Light: "Who!"
Blue Light: "Who who?"
Purple Light: "Don't cry, the door will be open in a moment!"
