Guilty Hands - ACDM RobC
Saturday August 17th, 2013 11:10:07 PM

The Wold and universe as the party knows it seems to stop. You feel like are floating in a lightless abyss. All sense of direction and time are lost. There is no sense of pain and no sense of nausea one may experience with the feeling of weightlessness. In what may have been either a matter of seconds or perhaps minutes this all changes.

The air around you - for lack of a better word - depressurises. It is as if all the air from your lungs is sucked out, and is then used to punch you in the stomach. As you gasp and fight off what may be a cheap yet imminent death you become aware that you are now sprawled on the floor of a dark chamber and able to breathe normally again.

The floor looks to be made of some sort of onyx reflecting what little light there is, and goes on endlessly to both your left and your right. Ahead stand two figures by a large oval onyx table. The figure on the left appears to be a worn, tired yet strong man in a hooded black robe. He stands bent over the table, his hands grasping either side of it.

The figure to the right of the table looks to be a warrior of some fashion. His shirtless form reveals oiled muscles ready for battle. His hands are massive, with fists the size of his head. Below his short cropped black hair his face is stoic.

The pure aura of power in the room is so intense that it becomes clear that these are no mortals. You are before both Gargul AND Domi themselves!

ALL: Please make 2 x Will Saves vs DC20. Fail either one and you are Shaken

Neither seems to acknowledge your presence.

"They fought with honour and won the day. They deserve to reward themselves" Domi advocates with his huge arms crossed.
"Then let them salvage their mortal treasures and trinkets. Souls are not trinkets to be handed out as mortals choose" responds Gargul casually, his head bowed as he stares at the tabletop.
"They showed initiative and sought only to strengthen themselves to fight off more abominations in the future"
"No, you are missing the point. They took what was rightfully mine. Bluntly put, they stole from ME!" Pieces of onyx seem to crumble away from the table as Gargul tightens his grip on it "The balance of life and death is mine to maintain and these mortals have the audacity to think they know better?"

As the two gods discuss recent events, a voice familiar to some comes from behind you "Now you've done it" whispers Gimp the Imp as he hobbles past you and towards his master.

Gargul and Domi turn now to face the party.

Domi keeps his arms crossed.
Perception DC30 or Sense Motive DC20 - Highlight to display spoiler: {The corners of his mouth slightly curl upwards as if he is trying to conceal a smile. It is possible he is amused either by Gargul's reaction, or perhaps even, the recent battle}

Gargul glares. Intently. Standing to his full height he addresses the party "Would someone care to explain to me why this mortal - " he points directly at Terser " - is not currently in the Lands of Rest? Did you think making a sacrifice first would allow you to rule in my stead? Or was it that you felt you were OWED?" With his last question he looks directly at Sam.

Gimp grins.

Sam stands firm in the presence of both Domi and Gargul. will= 21 and 25

Sam listens to the conversation with careful consideration. When Gargul directs his attention to him, he boldly, but respectfully replies.

"Mighty Gargul, the Grim Guard has fulfilled your will by eliminating this undead hoard. Terser died while serving in that aim. We have much work to do." With this, Sam fishes the journal from his bag and holds it out as he continues. "Tali has not finished her undead tasks. This journal details other misdeeds that will further cheat life from rightful death through necromancy. We have decided to raise Terser, in hopes of quickly destroying this blight on the Scab. Please allow us to continue this mission as we send the unholy undead from whence they came. Our work furthers your goals. It does not buck against them," (diplomacy=23)

Both Karnas and Cark are shaken by being summoned in front of the gods, but he did not wish to stay completely silent as he looks to Gargul. "Gargul, lord of Death, We did take a mortal out of your realm, but we shall find other undead, other abominations to your might and power, and we shall kill them for a second and final time. We stole from you today to assure that when we find those who seek to cheapen your realm we may eradicate them. Unless Terser Turns, is he not better served in a group that is seeking the eradication of the undead and furthering your goals?"

Despite being shaken, Terser is a bit cocky, maybe being emboldened by his recent conversation with Domi and his perception that Domi wants him in the world (even if it may have just been a dream).

My track record speaks for itself, Almighty Gargul. I've killed more undead than I can keep track of, and even in my weakened condition, I will send far more back to your halls than my soul could be worth. It would be even more if the process hadn't weakened me, and if I were restored fully, my tally would be that much more impressive.

The cloud of awe in Sam's mind suddenly gets shattered as he realizes something. He now stands before the mighty Gargul.

"Mighty Gargul. I know that this isn't the best of times to petition your...help, but I have a vital question for you. Is Tahni Wyrmrider...with you?"

Bruagh Stormbringer (Zach R.) AC 28/12/22 -- CMD 23/27 -- HP 74/101  d20+5=22 ; d20+5=16 ; d20+11=15 ; d20+11=30 ;

OOC: Updated Character Sheet to level 7. Terrible HP rolls but finally got above 100hp. Just FYI it is going to be hard for Bruagh to bite his tongue on many level here. Turning his back on Domi because of Tahni... his son and wife being with Gargul already, the fact that Gargul gets pissy when we ask to have a warrior who fell while valiantly fighting against a horde of undead (which Gargul supposedly hates) yet didn't seem to care about the dwarf who was creating the undead. Hypocrisy? I think maybe.

Bruagh is not worried so much about Gargul, he feels that he has done right by the god of life and Death. The warrior is shaken to his core by the appearance of Domi and immedietly falls prostrate before him. The Fallen Paladin... no, not fallen... Forsaken? What does one call a Paladin who still does the work of his former god, just not in his name... Regardless, Bruagh knows that he needs to speak, but what to say?

Bruagh crawls to a kneeling position once he regains his composure and takes a deep breath to steady himself. He looks up in just in time to notice the wry smile on Domi's face. He is amused... at a time like this? the warrior thinks to himself.

Bruagh ignores Gargul and speaks to his former Deity. "Lord Domi, it has been... a while since we last spoke. Or rather, since I yelled and..." his voice trails off. "Things may have changed in my mind, but my heart is still in the same place. My actions and motives have not changed, only my methods. I am truly and sincerely sorry for how I changed my allegiance, but not for the fact that it changed. My ethos is still to protect the weak, the innocent, only now, rather than pray to you for strength, I find strength in myself... strength in my friends... I carry strength from those now gone, they won't let me give in. I hope you understand."

Bruagh waits a moment then stands before addressing Gargul. Mighty Gargul, you accuse of stealing a soul from you. Yet how many trapped souls who were reanimated have we returned to you. You find that undead are an abomination, something you despise more than anything. How many hundreds have we returned to you. How many necromancers, who would openly perverse everything that you stand for, have we sent to the Land of Rest? For the hundreds of wrongs we have made right... the hundreds of souls we have returned to you, I think have two back in return is a little more than fair. When you took my loving wife and precious son from me... I never considered asking for them back... I knew they were in the Land of Rest... that you would protect them. Asking Terser to come back into this world is to much... because our duty is heavy. We carry the mantle of Grim Guard because we are burdened... our task is heavy, our role is Grim... yet we carry these burdens, doing your bidding, without complaint. We are not owed... but surely you see the work we have done for you."

Bruagh feels a weight lifted having said what he has said. He knows he may lose his life, but at this point he no longer cares.

"I have one request of either of you... please, tell me where Tahni Wyrmrider is located and how I find her... I worry about what my options may be if I get no answer here."

Flint strands in awe at the two gods before him. He was not much of a believer, as was the way of his clan who put their faith in steel. But here he is, watching two argue over the life of Terser.

The gods argue? Clearly he is a warrior for the light. Should I speak up? Is it my place to petition a god? Terser likely saved my life by charging forward to slay the undead chasing me. Can the gods hear my thoughts?

Being in the presence of not one but two gods visibly shakes Devlin, he does his best to remain calm as he approaches the deities and kneels. My lord Gargul He says bowing his head to the god of life and death. My lord Domi He says bowing his head to the god of protection.

My companions are compassionate in their words and I am proud to call them friend. What they have stated is true but I want it to be know that the decision to bring Terser back was left up to me and I am the one who used my divine power to bring him back. A power given by this land. He lets out a heavy sigh and faces Gargul solely.

I was afraid to face you again so soon lord, with barely any time to fulfill my promise. I had hoped to make an offering to you showing our deeds and intentions. The offerings were meant just as that an offering, nothing more. I offer no regret for my choice, one of my companions died fighting a horde of undead and I had the power to bring him back. It had its risks for all involved and now I stand before you to face mine. If you require a soul to keep the balance than I offer mine, I was the one who betrayed your trust, I will be the one to atone for it. The druid stands and looks at Gargul lifting his chin ever so slightly, exposing his neck.

The only reason that the Oathbreaker does not laugh is due to the terror he feels in his stomach. With his entire body trembling, the masked dwarf shakes his head. "Methinks the Grim Guard has overstepped its boundaries."

A God in the Hand - ACDM RobC
Monday August 19th, 2013 8:01:19 AM

The party each make their case before the two immortals.

"You see, this is why I like the dwarves. This one - " Domi says pointing at Bruagh "- believes that just because he no longer devoutly worships me that he owes me an apology." The God of Courage steps forward, and uncrossing his arms places a mighty hand on Bruagh's shoulder. "Bruagh Stormbringer, I do not ask my followers to regularly go to temple or even to pray to me. I look over those who are willing to stand up for what is right and to protect the innocent. You do this regularly. Whether you know it or not, you still follow my path" The God smiles down at the fighter still kneeling before him.

Domi removes his hand from Bruagh's shoulder and points at Devlin "And this one - " he says "- is willing to face your judgement alone, whatever that may be, in order to spare his friends from your wrath."

"And that one -" he points now at Terser "- only died because he was willing to give his life for another. Someone he had never met before, yet he was driven to protect him. This is why the dwarven nation will be reunited. They are willing to sacrifice themselves for each other"

It is Gargul's turn now to cross his arms. "We see different things then" he responds to Domi "I see arrogant, spoilt children. Only one kneels before us while the others think they can stand before us as equals. Only one apologises for the actions of the group, whilst the others make excuses or try to justify their actions. They pressume to know what it is I desire. And still they have the gall to ask for further favors!"

"They are young. They must be guided. I do not think we should give up on them just yet" Domi responds, and places his large hand back on Bruagh's shoulder

Bruagh: Highlight to display spoiler: { You hear Domi's voice in your head: "I cannot say what land or plane your love is currently on, but I can tell you that to this day she fights with the same strength that you do. Her heart remains firm that the two of you will find each other soon. Mortals make many choices that determine their ultimate destiny. I foresee the two of you reunited but not before you have each completed your parts of the greater tapestry."}

Gargul looks almost immediately to Domi "Domi, you would be wise to tread carefully. The Gods of Testing would not approve of too much interference in the affairs of mortals." Gargul uncrosses his arms, as Domi removes his hand from Bruagh's shoulder "But I will consider your advice. Could you leave us please?"

Domi gives a polite nod to Gargul before disappearing instantly.

Knowl Religion DC15:Highlight to display spoiler: {With the exception of Marteus and Alemi, Gargul is capable of removing any other god from his presence. If Domi had chosen not to go of his own accord, Gargul could have forced him.}

The room is now quiet. Silently, the oval table moulds itself into a high backed chair which Gargul then sits upon. He looks down upon each member of the party.

Sam - Gargul glares sternly at Sam "YOU decided to raise Terser? And what gave you the right to make that decision? Do not think your gilded tongue will work on me Sam Snapdragon McFisticuff"

Karnas - "Lord of Death? Is that how you see me?" Gargul actually manages a wry smile "And if you expect Terser to turn, would it not be better he remain dead and safe in the Lands of Rest?"

Bruagh - "If your work is heavy, then perhaps you are in the wrong work? True, many souls have been returned to permanent rest, but there are many Eyes, Grims and Undead Hunters who do the same task. Let me ask you this, does the number of abominations a person kills determine their worth for resurrection? Does that make Tersers life worth more than a mother with child?" Gargul asks these questions with his fingers pressed together as if contemplating the answers himself. "As for Tahni Wyrmrider, it is not for the Gods to meddle in the affairs of mortals. Though I strongly suspect some Gods do not adhere as strongly to that rule as others" He looks to where Domi was previously standing.

Flint - Gargul says nothing, but smiles and nods at Flint

Oathbreaker - "Dealing with demons now? Tread very carefully. This could... complicate things"

Devlin - "And so, Borgi Grundback, I believe we have much to discuss. You are brave to want to take the full repercussions for your action in taking Terser back. I fear you do so without fully grasping the gravity of the situation. You had the power to bring him back AND seek my permission at the same time, but instead chose to try and revive him without my approval. Why? Why be so afraid to seek my permission? What did you expect me to do then? What do you expect me to do now?"

Terser - "Come. Stand beside me whilst their fate is determined" Gargul gestures to the space to the right of his chair "You are not on trial here"

Gargul sighs, whilst Gimp shelters himself behind the large chair.

Terser approaches the god on his throne and stands beside him. What else is one to do when given orders from a god?

Lord Gargul - you may not consider me to be on trial, but if I had acted with more wisdom, perhaps we could have avoided the problem altogether. I am not blameless, and ask that I share whatever fate you decide for my companions. They only did what they thought was best in the situation. We do not have the wisdom of the gods to guide us.

The gnome is clearly annoyed with the statements of Gargul.

"Gargul, I know where I, a mere mortal stands compared to that of the power of a god. I have never assumed or guessed at what you have wanted from us. When we bargained for Dernock's life, you yourself gave us the task of striking down undead that have blighted the Scab. We are only doing the best we can with what you have demanded of us. If there is a new task you would rather us do, then you'll have to tell us what you want instead or in addition to it. We will do the task for Terser's life. Just don't be surprised when we say aloud that we know what you want after you have told us to do it."

Devlin winces at Sam's words but allows the bard to say his peace.

Borgi is a name I have not heard in years. I hope I do not for another decade or more. Why do you bring his name up now? The druid says with more venom in his voice than he means. I appologize m'lord, it is my my hope that Borgi is being tormented in the afterlife for all the pain and torment he caused to the numerous families and generations that one treacherous night.

Devlin takes a deep cleansing breath before continuing. Lord Gargul my reasoning for my actions are rather simple, Fear and misguided respect. I was afraid to face you, begging to bring another back so soon after the last one and without fulfilling the promise from the last time. When you dismissed us last time you seemed annoyed with us. I respect you too much to waste your time petitioning you to bring a soul back. That was my thinking anyway when I set about to bring Terser back to us. Misguided though I was the act is done and I cannot undo it. The dwarf seems deflated and beaten after speaking but he squares his shoulders and continues.

As for what you should do now lord I do not presume to know the will of the gods. But I offer you a question and a solution. He takes a steadying breath, one does not often question a god. Why give us mortals the power to bring a soul back from your realms? If it is such an offense to you why give us the knowledge of such things. I travel with good companions, ones who have saved innocents, enemies and myself from certain death because it is what is right. I can only speak for myself but I would do anything in my power to save these Grim Guard. He says pointing to the others.Obviously I would do it to the point of bringing a gods wrath down upon me. So I ask again, why give it to us? The next few words come slowly and with trepidation. As for what I expect you to do now. Seeing as I cannot use it responsibly take the power to raise a soul from me until such a time I have learned to value of a soul. I don't know where that may rate on godly punishment but in the company I keep it may be keenly felt. We will be facing the necromancers that caused the scene you see here soon and I feel the fight will be worse than this one.

Devlin once again kneels before Gargul bowing his head. I leave my fate in your hands lord. I stand by my earlier statement. I made the decision to raise Terser and preformed the ceremony. Misguided though I was it was all my fault. I beg forgiveness and mercy.

Karnas shrugs ."Death and Life are two parts of the same coin. One cannot exist without the other and anyone who controls one controls the other. Saying one is the god of both is redundant because either implies the other, and as far as I know most know you as the God of Death. I'm not a religious philosopher, I deal with the magic of the world not the magic of the beyond, and these verbal gymnastics I'm not any good at as much as it may have attempted to been hammered into my skull.

And acknowledging what can occur doesn't change whether it will, in fact it may help prevent it. As a mortal I only saw one potential downside of resurrecting a Dwarf who is very clearly against the undead and likely serves your purpose in life as a matter of course. That being him being used by others or being led into being controlled. Such could happen to any mortal here."

An Angry God is a Vengeful God - ACDM RobC
Tuesday August 20th, 2013 8:22:56 AM

Gargul sighs audibly. Or perhaps growls quietly? He taps his fingers lightly on his chair as if weighing the words of the party carefully and considering the appropriate godly response.

"Domi was right. You are but children" He shakes his head and pauses, though when he finally speaks what he says no doubt stuns Terser. "Terser's death pleased me"

Gargul pauses again before continuing "No, not that he died, but the manner in which he died. He showed humility and a respect for life. He was willing to die to preserve the life of another. Had the rest of you simply asked I would have granted him his life back without further question or demand."

Gargul the Almighty then stands from his chair, seeming to grow larger as he does so. "I am the God of Death AND Life. I have been present since the First Age. You broke my law and then rubbed my nose in your malfeasance. Then you not only failed to explain yourselves adequately, but you have the nerve to ask for more favors ... and you are rude. It is only because of the intercession of Domi that I do not strike you all dead where you stand. Instead, I see that I must scold and punish you as one would a child to help you learn the error of your ways"

"Sam Snapdragon McFisticuff. Until you learn to use your tongue properly you shall not use it at all". Sam gets a slightly metallic taste in his mouth. It is then he notices his tongue seems heavier than usual. Sam's tongue has been gilded in gold. Sam can no longer speak! (OOC: Spells and bardic performances that rely on speaking can still be cast through humming, grunting, whistling or songs without words, but verbal communication is impossible. Food will also have no taste and other potential roleplay effects. This will last until Sam next levels)

"Borgi, Devlin, or whatever name you choose to go by now. I know better than most that ones history does not define their future. In my early years I too was to be feared. I was known for evil and death alone. It would seem to this day I am still viewed as a god to be scared of. It is not fear I demand, or even want. It is respect. Though you show it now in my presence, you were still misguided in your attempt to ressurect a friend without my permission. Until you learn to respect my duties and powers, I strip you of your ability to meddle in my affairs" (OOC: Devlin loses the ability to cast Reincarnate in addition to any spell from the Necromancy school. This will last until Devlin next levels)

"Bruagh Stormbringer, Oathbreaker and Karnas. You stood before not one but two gods. When before a god one should kneel as well as remember their manners. You need to be taught humility." Bruagh, Oathbreaker and Karnas each feel a pain in their left knee. (Your left knee is permanently wounded, reducing your base land speed by 10 feet if your base speed is 30 feet or more. If your base speed is less than 30 feet, your speed is reduced by 5 feet. This will last until you next level)

"Flint - " Gargul looks down at the kneeling dwarf " - you may wish to consider the company you keep"

His tone then softens.

"Terser. You showed a respect for life, respect for your friends, and have shown me due respect. I will ease your burden to allow you to further continue your deeds. Be wary though. Should we meet again the situation may be different" (Terser's negative levels are hereby removed!)

"Now, all of you be gone. I grow weary of this"

The Grim Guard then find themselves instantly returned to the cavern below The Scab.

Well, the god of death seems to have strong opinions of you folk. You sound like my kind of people, I might tag along for a while longer if that's alright. I might even try my hand at some magic if you will put up with me. Hailing from a clan of armor smiths, magic tends to be frowned upon - messes with the armor I'm told. But heck, it worked a little when I was young, so why not give it a go.

Karnas (L1-2 L2-1 L3- 2): AC12/12/10 - CMD13 - HP20/40 , Cark AC: 19/16/17 - CMD 14 - HP 20/20, Blindsense 20'
Tuesday August 20th, 2013 11:33:25 PM

Karnas winced at being injured, as he mentally harrumphed at gods being so touchy about such things, as he got to his feet and looked among the rest. "Well, that could have gone worse I suppose. Sam, I'll have a little something coming into play when I get a chance to rest and check my research very soon, so I may have a intermediary you can speak through."

Sam: 16/12/15 -- CMD 14 -- HP 55/55

Sam shrugs at Karnas' possible solution. The muted bard looks as though the life has been drained from him.

Devlin -- AC 18/13/16 -- CMD 17 -- HP 15/57 --------- Raeb -- AC 22/13/19 -- CMD 27 -- HP 24/46

Devin sighs and finishes packing the items found and readying himself for the trip back to the faire.

Bruagh Stormbringer (Zach R.) AC 28/12/22 -- CMD 23/27 -- HP 74/101
Wednesday August 21st, 2013 10:08:30 AM

Bruagh feels the pain in his knee and moves it a bit to try and ease the ache to no avail. "These will be the last words I speak for a while. Until Sam is able to speak again I, Bruagh Stormbringer, vow that I shall remain silent as well."

Bruagh readies himself to make the trip back.

Oathbreaker (Ian) 13/11/15 - 36/49 - CMD 21
Wednesday August 21st, 2013 7:01:37 PM

The Oathbreaker remains even more silent that usual, not moving from his spot as he stares forward into the darkness, one hand desperately clutching his bow. He does not react when talked to, and seems to be completely lost in thought.

The group is once more back in the cavern, corpses strewn about and the horrid reminder of Runus' torn body of what befell the Ironbane princess. For most, the immediate return becomes a time of deeper thought and contemplation. Karnas speaks of being able to possibly help Sam, though the bard is presently not of a state of mind to dwell on what the future holds for him. Bruagh declares an oath to share the bards fate until such a time Garguls command is lifted and Oathbreaker simply stares in silence into the dark.

Flint expresses his intentions of staying with the group, as Devlin silently packs for the return to the Stone Festival. The news they bring Fifur Ironbane is not going to be what the lord will want to hear. Still it will need to be done. The next day's journey will give the group time to think on how to do so.

After the days events, the journey to the cave, the giant attack, the horde of undead and the encounter with Gargul, by anyone's count it has been a long day. The group is worn and wounded, but is it wise or prudent to stay within the caves? Is it just as dangerous to push through the night or even camp nearby where giants have recently been fought?

Sam: 16/12/15 -- CMD 14 -- HP 55/55
Wednesday August 21st, 2013 10:28:09 PM

Sam will follow the group majority on when and where to rest.

Bruagh Stormbringer (Zach R.) AC 28/12/22 -- CMD 23/27 -- HP 74/101
Wednesday August 21st, 2013 10:38:56 PM

Bruagh snaps his fingers and points to the exit, suggesting he would rather not rest in this place. Where they rest is of little consequence... Just not here.

Devlin -- AC 18/13/16 -- CMD 17 -- HP 15/57 --------- Raeb -- AC 22/13/19 -- CMD 27 -- HP 24/46
Thursday August 22nd, 2013 12:23:55 AM

Devlin nods at the group. No use spendin' more time here lads. Lets find a spot outside that is easily defensible. He heads towards the exit and than stops, turns towards the group. With sorrow in his eyes he says. I'm sorry lads, this was my doing, my fault. If there be any way ta make amends I will do it. He lets out another sigh and turns away, shoulders slumped and defeated.

When the group finds a position for the night Devlin does his best to surround the group with spike stones. Making any approach to the group painful and slow going.

Cast spike stones to defend group for the night. (Will last 7 hours.)

Karnas (L1-2 L2-1 L3- 2): AC12/12/10 - CMD13 - HP20/40 , Cark AC: 19/16/17 - CMD 14 - HP 20/20, Blindsense 20'

Karnas ponders, then turns to the group. "If you give me a hour or so, My familiar has a metamorphosis of sorts to go through, and it's next form has telepathy which would allow Sam a avenue to speak through, Although we could just wait till were back at the festival."

Terser (Warren G): HP 82/82 - AC 21/13/21 - CMD 24 (raging HP 96/96, AC 19/11/19 - CMD 26)  d20+10=21 ;
Thursday August 22nd, 2013 11:39:06 AM

Terser attempts to find a hidden and defensible spot. [i]survival 21[/roll]
His restoration has left him with a surfeit of energy, and he does not think that he can sleep.

Ye lads can all sleep, I'll keep watch tonight. Mayhaps things will look brighter in the morning.
