Braugh attaches his grappling hook to the rope and after a brief twirl, he tosses it up through the hole.
With a clink and a pull to find tension, he climbs the rope and pulls himself to the surface.

The ground is ash and rolls down the 45degree angle at your touch.
The air is dusty, hot and smells of sulfur. The sky is clouded with smoke and ash.

You look and see the northern volcanic spanse of The Scab spreading like a black and red ulcer on the land.
Lava flows freely in rivers and pooling in lakes, granting the entire landscape a glowing dark red hue.

But you see nothing hostile... unless you count the landscape itself.

Boomy follows closely behind Braugh and takes in the view as well, followed by Sam, Devlin, and Tahni

You quickly rig a plank of wood to the end of the rope and begin hoisting the feeble and young upwards. Surprisingly, Ms. Cloverdale requires little assistance to mount the seat to be pulled up, perhaps she has recovered some strength?
Immediately some start to choke and cough in the volcanic air.

Dende looks around and shakes his head, "Us dwarves are more akin to the subterranean as opposed to this..."

Baenor looks to Braugh with a worried expression.

Sam does his best to recognize landmarks to help find the village's location. He then does his best to determine how much immediate peril the group is in by studying the volcanic activity. I really wish I was wrong about that riddle.

Devlin waits until everyone is up before taking his turn on the lift. Once he reaches the top he looks around the bleak landscape. Well were out, now lets get off this wasteland. He grabs the scarf used back in Riddleport and ties it around his mouth and nose. He than helps some of the children do the same with scraps of cloth. When everyone is ready he will take the lead, he is alert to danger and will guide the less agile group around any major problems.

I do agree with Braugh that we need to plan before we head in any direction. I just know for sure that the tunnels would be a horrible choice. They were made by lava from the volcano. They most likely are going to have lava flowing through them now that the volcano is active again.

Boomy survey's the land and quickly access any dangers. Slowly he once again remembers the tales of old. "Beware traveler, and show respect. For the waterfall you bathe in is a sacred place and home to a sacred demon. So state your respect. Say your racial or religious litanies. Leave offerings of respect. For these sites are sacred earth, water, fire, and air" Perhaps his supercitious side is getting the better of him, but the dwarf hopes for a safe passage.

Humbly he walks over to one of the pools of lava and places 100g (half his money) in the pool and watches it melt and disappear. OH SACRED ONE, I HONOR YOU. BESTOW A BLESSING UPON ME FOR I AM FILLED WITH RESPECT.

As the group contemplates where to go from here, Sam wracks his brain in attempts to remember the location of the apparent Gnomish village. He heard from many sources that it is the north face of the mountain that was colonized, yet here you are.

It must be close.... Perhaps travelling down the mountain would help?

This land, although supposedly rich in minerals and fertile volcanic soil, does seem too volatile for safe habitation.

Then, Boomy walks to a pool of lava, and recognizing that there are some sentient powers in the Wold, decides to make a sacrifice of gold.

His words boom and echo throughout the landscape as the gold pieces melt and become one with the lake of magma....

and then the magma begins to rise ...
The lake itself, approximately 100yards in diameter seems to be slowly lifting itself onto the ground and flowing in your direction
A 10foot wide glob of molten rock oozes out of the pool and creeps closer to Boomy!
It tries to touch you, and it radiates a hungry heat and smell of sulfur. Do you back away?

Boomy is once again caught off guard as he pays his respects. His instincts scream for him to flee, but he holds his ground. He watches as the magma approaches and prepares to flee should things get out of hand (acrobatics =20).

Bruagh sees the magma rise and readies his shield. He instinctively grabs for his axe but realizes the magical frost properties his long sword would work better. Be careful Boomy, you have shown it respect. That doesn't mean it has to do the same.

Tahni and Devlin's keen senses detect tracks that could be bipedal creatures dragging something heading down the ashy mountain slope.
They also know that this is the legendary volcanic spanse of The Scab that is supposedly rich in minerals and gems as the compressed carbon arise to the surface for extraction. But the best gems are deep within the crust of The Wold.

As the huge puddle of living magma arises like a tidal wave, brave Boomy withstands the heat as it stretches hungrily towards him.

Time seems to stand still as Sam suddenly realises Highlight to display spoiler: { This is a Magma Ooze!}

With a sudden lurch, the magma crashes over him,
Your instinct is to jump and your legs twitch at the last second,
But its too late.
Your skin is burnt off in a matter of seconds and you are consumed in a world of pain.

(Hit AC 18 for 30 damage, your at -10hp.)

Everyone else please save Boomy's corpse. Tahni's Create Water douses the Magma like a fire extinguisher, filling the air with immediate steam, causing the creature to become staggered for 3 rounds. (fail DC20fort save)

All the refugees gasp in terror at the horrible sight.

Devlin is stunned by the events but quickly reacts. He spins around to face the creature and fires his crossbows at it. His bolts sink into its body but are burned away quickly. Get the women an children away from the creature, head down slope.Under his breath Devlin says. May Wardd's luck guide the old man to Gargul's side

Sam goes completely numb after seeing his savior get immolated by the magma ooze. Nooooo!!! Boomy!!! Sam quickly recalls his knowledge of the creature. Its a magma ooze! Your weapons will take more damage than they can deal! Tahni, slow it down by dumping water on it! Just stay away from it! We might still be able to save him! Sam keeps his distance from the ooze and waits for a chance to drag Boomy away from the creature (if he is strong enough to do so).

Despite the hot environment, Tahni goes cold. Boomy has fallen quite heavily and doesn't apepar to be moving. She begins to move to his side, but is immediately halted by Sam's words. The gnome is right. She is of most use slowing the monstrosity down and giving others time to act.

Again, she focuses her powers in creating water against her target (Cast Create Water to form a puddle between the creature and Boomy) "Somebody get Boomy!"

Bruagh, the icy blade already in hand, charges the magma creature, trying to both kill it and place himself between it and Boomy so others may safely take him out of harms way. Bruagh will detect evil as he charges, if the creature shows evil, he will smite it.

Damage: 12 Slashing + 5 Cold (Hopefully Double or 1.5x Damage) +3 Smite Damage if Smite activates.

ooc: Sorry guys. I wasn't expecting a battle just yet. Google Docs latest update is having issues with my character sheet so I have been constructing a new one with Boomy's new photo and his lvl 3 stats. I previously rolled my HP in the LNB for lvl 3 (9-2-2011). I should actually be at 28 hp, with the Solis ring Boomy should have only lost 25 hp (If I was smart and had activated the luna ring....). Is it too late to add his extra lvl 3 HP, which would have left him at 3 hp?

Addison: Oi! Apologies mate, I didn't realize your toon was still level 2. If your still kicking, then the Magma ooze is gonna try to grapple constrict you though since it has the grab.

You come back to conscioussness, fighting the pull of the netherworld!

Boomy is at 3hp (update your header so we can see your new stats when you get a chance please).

His skin peels from his body, but he remains conscious enough to jump up up up....
and the magma wraps around his leg, gripping his ankle and grafting to his leg.

(It seems that after a successful melee attack, the 18, the grab ability allows for a free grapple attempt, which beats a CMD of 35.)

Boomy you can do a standard action if you'd like, your acrobatic jumping kept your upper body free. Or attempt to break the grapple, whatever you like.

Devlin fires two bolts that are absorbed by the creatures thick mass and rolling moltennesss

Braugh sees that a faint evil aura possesses this segment of magma. (Braugh only Knowledge nature DC 14 Highlight to display spoiler: {That's not normal.}. With Sam's inspiring song, the Paladin bravely charges the Magma Ooze, summoning a white-hot golden hue about him and dives his blade haft-deep into the ooze, making the molten rock harden and stiffen.

You hear a sickening Groooooaaaaaan from the bowels of the gargantuane Lava Rock
With a hisssss, and crack, the 10foot wide field of burning magma splits into two!
Braugh please roll DC 19 fort save or your sword takes 9 damage. If weapons drop below half hitpoints, they become broken. Hardness applies, how much HP does a longsword +1 have anyways?

One Magma Pile continues to envelop Boomy,
But the other rolls onto Braugh, but the Paladin jumps back in time to avoid the amassing blob of death (Miss AC 13)

After a moment of observation, everything about the situation seems out of place to Sam. That ooze is from another plane. There must be a portal to another plane near by. Definitely demonic and evil.

After shouting encouragement, Sam does his best to clear his mind and decipher the voices from the pit. He listens for the words of those he fears the most. Fearing speaking Abyssal in front of his companions, Sam reaches out with his mind to the demons below (in Abyssal). Who are you? What purpose do you have in this plane?

Devlin quickly reloads his weapons and fires into the blob of magma still attacking Boomy. The bolts once more sink into the creature's surface before being burned away. He watches in amazement as Boomy rises from the puddle of molten lava the old Dwarf fighting off pain that would have surely brought a lesser being to see Gargul.

OOC: Iron or Steel One Handed Weapons have a Hardness of 10 and 5 hitpoints.

Also, since I declared a smite on the target before it split, do I get the smite bonus against both?


Bruagh feels the heat of the lava ooze burning the blade and is silently thankful for the icy aura emanating from the blade itself.

Bruagh ignores the second oozes that took for of the first and focuses soley on the one trying to kill Boomy. He thrusts his borrowed blade towards the ooze, with a bluish haze from the ice and a white hue from Domi's divine power.

Upon hearing the screams from the pools Bruagh screams out. "What vile sorcery is this?! Domi!!!"

Damaging Magic Weapons: An attacker cannot damage a magic weapon that has an enhancement bonus bonus unless his weapon has at least as high an enhancement bonus as the weapon struck.

The pain sears through the monk and it takes all his training to push in to the back of his mind and center himself. Boomy does his best to break free of the creature's grasp and move to safety. Every movement brings a fresh reminder of the exposed bone and seared flesh. It seems every battle the monk finds himself a hair's breath from meeting death, but so far his opponent has always been won the race to the nether world and he hopes this will be no different. As he rives from the magma, looking more dead than alive, he twists and hopes to break free of the creature's grasp so that he can back up to heal himself.

Devlin's bolts sink into the mass of the creature grappling boomy as Braugh rips his sword from one ooze and digs his blade into the one holding onto Boomy's leg! He cleaves the branch of the magma that has the old monk and he is released! (7 damage to weapon, but that gets absorbed by hardness)
Another loud groooooooaaaaan is heard from deep in the bellows of the mass.

And again the Ooze splits in half.

Boomy rolls away and pops a cure mod potion out of his pack, downing the contents.

Then, the three oozes surrounding Braugh begin to shift in the same motion.
Like red and black paint spreading around you.
In one lurch, they attempt to reform to one glob... on the Paladin
The first catches Braugh's shield and deflects to the side as the other two wrap around your waist, crushing and melting your flesh. Braugh takes 37 damage!

(Attacks on Braugh: Ooze 1Miss AC 15, Ooze 2 hit AC 24 for12 slam and 7 fire. Ooze 3 hit AC 24 for 10slam and 8fire. Both grab/grapples miss CMD 17 and 12, thank goodness for that smite deflection bonus!)

OOC: Apologies for missing posts. I have a great excuse if anyone wants to hear it. Otherwise... Oh and welcome Laurie! You seem to be just in time to see me die!

Bruagh screams in agony yet no sound escapes his scorched throat. Where long, thick hair and a truly impressive beard were once found, only charred flesh remains. His strength is gone as is his voice. His breastplate glows red hot cooking the paladin inside. Yet somehow he remains on his feet, sword and shield in hand. The icy aura of the longsword a minuscule source of relief in what is otherwise a torrent of pain and torment. The Paladin mouths a prayer yet no words are heard and the pain of his burns is lessened slightly.

Then he does the unthinkable. He attacks.

The Icy longsword swings wide emanating the white hue of divine power as it slashes at all three of the infernal oozes at once.

Bruagh takes a step back hoping he sent the creatures back to the Abyss, knowing if he didn't, he will soon be joining his wife and son in the afterlife.

Standard Action: Attack the ooze while fighting defensively.

Boomy, Devlin, and Sam attack together and hit the amassing Oozes with crossbows and shiruken. One of them shrivels to nothing as the repeated missile assault blasts off chunks of lava in all directions.

Suppression fire baby.

Braugh, breastplate feeling like a cherried black iron skillet, scars adorning his body, swings his mighty sword, and cleaves one of the Oozes in twain!

The ice from the sword spreads quickly and chunks of hard lava fall to the ground.

Then, the new stranger, Jarga runs up and in the coolest (get it?) introduction ever:
He tosses a loaded dust of dryness, immediately bursting to 400 gallons of water.
Steam is everywhere! Your vision is clouded.

And you hear a clunk.... the last ooze is now a 5foot diameter lump of solid rock.

The Forged have survived this together. Congratulations.

The refugees cheer for the victory as the steam clears.

Everyone gets 600 exp and a Hero Point (including the exp bonus) for defeating the Magma Ooze at the Pit of Lava
Jarga gets a second bonus hero point for actually using a dust of dryness that he bought with his alotted money in a non-linear manner.

Even after the healing, he is still burned in many places, but no longer looks as if he is on the cusp of death.

Bruagh runs a hand over his now hairless face and head. "I was born with a head full of hair, and had a beard since I was just about Dende's age... this is going to take some getting used to... wait a second. Did you say gems?"

OOC: Re create ale cantrip - I brought that up in the BGC a few months ago :) They've agreed it could be a 1st level conjuration spell (as a cantrip - they were worried about people just making tons and selling it all off). If you're interested, it may be worth revisiting that?

Tahni drenches the now hairless and scarred Braugh with water, creating yet more steam as the heroes introduce themselves to Jarga, the mysterious fire-wielding dwarf on a sojourn to discover more of his untapped power.

Sam notices the gems first as the refugees run to see if our heroes survived unscathed.

Dende, the young black dwarf looks to Braugh, first with wide-eyes, but then he narrows his vision and says, "Warriors bear their scars with pride, right Mr. Stormbringer?"

Baenor approaches the solidified magma rocks, pulls out a pickaxe and taps a gem from it. He gasps a bit and says, "Bloody diamonds! Must be worth a small fortune."

Appraise or Profession Mining DC 16 Highlight to display spoiler: {These gems have to be worth at least 6000 gold, it will take about a day to extract them carefully though. }

You look about the volcanic spanse of the Scab and see that lava lakes and rivers go for miles upon miles in all directions. The dry, hot wind blows ashes and sparks from the north.

Mr. Goodbuttom speaks to Devlin, "Sir, we have food to last us weeks, but I'm unsure how long we can survive here without shelter."

The refugees consist of Baenor (2nd level fighter), Dende (1st level Paladin), Tina Cloverdale (cursed and dying slowly), Mr. Goodbuttom (4th level expert), 6 gnomish children, 3 gnomish women, 3 dwarven females, 2 Dwarven teenagers, and 4 Dwarven children. For a total of 21 refugees.

Bruagh begins putting on his breastplate now that it is no longer glowing red hot. He looks to young Dende, beaming with pride, "Tis not the scars themselves that are a source of pride but why you earned them. Defending friends and family, that is the best source of pride to have."

Bruagh pats Dende on the shoulder and with his armor now intact heads towards to Baenor to inspect the diamonds. "Fine diamonds at that, with a pickaxe I could extract them all in about a day. Would be about... 6,000gp worth of diamonds. My only fear is that we don't have an extra day to wait here. We need to find a safe place. However, we could use the rest. I am fine with either decision."

"Perhaps we could quickly break the rocks into more manageable pieces and take them with us? Extract the diamonds later" Tahni wonders aloud. The party certainly needs some time to rest - particularly Boomy and Bruagh - but the area may not be as forgiving as it has been.

She eyes the nearby magma pool, wary of more oozes (Perception: 14) whilst looking about for a more sheltered place to continue discussions. "We could always head back down the hole and make camp? It would appear to be safer than camping in the open"

Tahni feel something unusual in her pocket, and reaches in, withdrawing a small vial with a label on it. It reads "Potion of Invisibility - From Jerry and Ken". With a knowing smile, she places it back in her pocket.

Boom'y concentration is broken when the gems are discovered. The town would be nice, but I don't want to be leaving those gems behind either. I don't suppose any of ya magic fellow got a way to get the gems out easier? Perhaps an elemental? If not, we could cut the whole lot into chunks and throw it into the bags of holding to extract later. The adamatine weapons should cut through easy enough.

I am all for getting the gems if we can get them quickly. I don't think we should stay anywhere near here for shelter. Between goblins, cave monsters, and demons, we have seen enough of what this place has to offer. Also don't forget that we are on an active volcano. These refugees' lives are not worth any amount of gold that we can get for these gems.

Though it is generally agreed that the lives are infinitely more importantly than money, a quick excavation might be worth any risk.

Braugh borrows Baenor's pick and begins shaving off larger chunks of rock that contain diamond for later more careful excavation.
He finds that hitting the solid magma ball with the pickaxe is hard work and quickly works up a sweat in this heat. He also finds that the metal pickaxe becomes dull and nicked after 30 swings.

Then, Boomy has the idea of using the adamantium guirisame. He takes a swing and finds that it travels like a hot knife through butter, lobbing off a cheese-square size of rockndiamond. Much easier.

Jarga sees that this land is rather barren of flora and fauna to the naked eye. The ground is volcanic ash and the rivers of lava make the climate too hot and dry to support much life. He does see small lizards and scorpions scuttling amongst the rocks. They must survive by feeding on insects that burrow.

After 30 minutes of excavation, you have several 50lb chunks of diamond-lava, and Devlin leads the way down the mountain slope, travelling amongst the lava rivers. Shelter is important as beads of sweat appear on everyone's forehead during the march.

And you march, and march, and march down the mountainside until the land levels out a bit and a breeze can be felt from the North.
Now it is more like rolling ashy hills, with a few sparse brush of scorched foliage, Jarga knowing that they must have a looooong taproot to sustain hydration in these climates.
But the soil nutrients are probably unmatched anywhere. A specialized wheat or sorghum seed variety could create a bountiful harvest very quickly.

The sun goes down.You must camp soon. The terrain is hilly, upslopes and downslopes of 40feet, do you chose to camp at the crest or the valley of the hills?

I will take middle watch from the top of the hill. I don't think we have much to worry from predators here the land can't support large creatures. When it is his turn Devlin will set up watch in the shadow of a large boulder. He melts into the shadows unable to be seen by any but the most observant of foes.

Jarga figures that everyone is fairly tired after a big day and watches the stars burn for a while before rolling out his bedroll.

He lies down, head resting on his backpack, closes his eyes and pretends to sleep. He listens to the people around him for a while and eventually falls into sleep.

During his watch and before Tahni has gone to sleep, Bruagh visits Tahni and speaks of many things. His execution of the pirate during Mercutio's attack and the ant invasion and Dende seem to be the two most talked about things. He takes the time to explain why he did what he did and his reasoning for doing so.
