Buzzards ahead

DM Glenn
Friday September 14th, 2007 11:01:23 PM

[OOC: I intended to post earlier, but was delayed getting back because the rental car got a flat which added three and a half hours to may trip.]

[OOC: Thanks Kim for making the Thursday post!]

Graeff was unable to help with Podo's question about the Justicar of Pantheon, having never heard of him.

Kendry thanks Slam and heads for home with the prisoner in toe. He spends some time talking with him. After a while the prisoner seems as eager as everyone else to get where their going before his ears fall off.

Laughing at his blue hair, Julian enjoys Selithe's prank.

Pondering wizards and such, Airin walks quietly with the group. Fioni snuggles into Airion's cloak. She seems highly attuned to the land as they travel.

Fickle keeps up with the others despite a few missteps.

Moving ahead, Tobias leads the way back home.

Once safely down, Dwight's noticeably more comfortable with the rest of the journey.

The fog burns off by early noon, but a chill remains in the air through the next few days. Through keen sense of Survival the group is staying on track and making good time. On the second day as the group nears the ravine where they battled the manticores, both Airin and Julian spot buzzards in the air. As the group moves along the edge of the ravine towards the end, more buzzards can be seen gathered around the severely eaten carcass.

Podo, following the others, hopes not to fall.

Looking out into the distance, Podo see buzzards, then looks to see what the buzzards are doing.

"Guys,Gal...perhaps we should go over there to that buzzard area, to see why the buzzards are acting weirdly" says Podo.

"Aren't they merely... buzzarding?" asks the bard of the monk, not so eloquently. Nonetheless, he takes the cue from his good friend. He prepares his bow, nocks an arrow, and draws closer. [2nd spot check, following Podo's prompting, with a +2 since Podo focused his attention on the birds' behavior.]

"Looks like they're competing with a predator for their feast."

"Buzzards hang around dead stuff. It usually smells bad, and very few dead things have anything worthwhile. Let's go home...

"Oh, okay, let's have closer look, then go home."

Dwight  d20+4=19
Sunday September 16th, 2007 9:01:13 PM

Dwight hears the others and looks for himself (spot: 19). "well they are certainly going after the carcus, but how much of it remains after a week? If I had to guess, something else is going on."

Dwight prepares his bow. And waits to see if the group is going to stealth.

Airin makes sure Fioni stays well tucked away under her cloak. She does not want to have the frail hawk flying around between those predators...

"Those Buzzards won't hurt us. They only like dead things... I hope"

Then Airin prepares her crossbow and moves out. She tries to walk in the undergrowth taking as much cover from trees and the like as she closes in on the site.

Weekly Summary: On the road again...
After some rest and a party the Crescent Valley halflings decide to go on the road again. Question is, where to go first!
Kendry's suggestion is accepted and the group departs for home.
Then near the ravine the group notices a group of buzzards but Kendry's keen eyes reveal there must be something else back there... time to investigate!

Fickle
Monday September 17th, 2007 8:37:42 AM

If you should look back?? you see Fickle eating chicken from a bucket?? "HMMM! yum yum Good!'the little man Give'z Me'z"

DM Glenn
Monday September 17th, 2007 10:59:54 AM

Seeing the buzzards' action odd, Podo suggests they check it out.

Kendry suggests they are just competing with something for the food.

Julian not sure it worthwhile, but is game to have a look.

Dwight Thinks they should have been eaten by now, prepares his bow.

While the guys are chatting about checking whats up the buzzards, Airin tucks Fioni under her cloak and preps her crossbow as she moves through the trees and undergrowth with ease towards the site. The buzzards don't seem to notice her.

Fickle is hanging back, eating some kind of fried crunchy bird from a bucket.

As Airin get closer she can see that the carcass is generally eaten away leaving mostly bones and sinew. As she watches a buzzard hops forward from the group circling the carcass for a peck, but a furry head pops out of a hole in the wall of ribs snapping at the bird with a mouth of sharp teeth. Growling, its head disappears back inside.
Airin only knowledge nature DC 15 Highlight to display spoiler: {The head looked like a badger only larger.}

Airin is in the tree line about 30' from the carcass. Everyone else is about 100' from the carcass. There are about two dozen buzzards milling around.

Airin notices what happens and decides to turn back to her friends. Apparently it's just something that looks like a badger that has an argument with the buzzards over a carcass that no longer can be identified.

Quietly Airin heads back and tells the rest what she saw so they can decide if it's worth the delay...

Julian
Monday September 17th, 2007 6:06:18 PM

Julian talks to his familiar in that sing-song voice he reserves for his 'pets' and children, "A badger, there's something we don't want to fight with, do we Shark?

then more firmly, at no one in particular, "And if it is a badger, I'll not stand by to see any of you attack my totem animal."

Julian
Monday September 17th, 2007 6:06:59 PM

Then with a more jovial tone, "Besides, we don't want to go near that carcass anyway, right?"

Selithe
Monday September 17th, 2007 10:21:41 PM

Selithe moves along with the others, currently she leads Gra, her riding dog instead of riding him. She has been trying to give the riding dog abit of a break off and on just incase the group ends up needing to make a hard ride to get away.

No matter Selithe will keep her bow near to hand so she can use it if the need comes.

Dwight
Monday September 17th, 2007 10:43:38 PM

Surprised by Julian's seeming reluctance to rush in, Dwight asks about badger behavior. "Is it common for badgers to scavenge? I thought they were bark and berry creatures. Added to that, the carcass should be long eaten by now, so how common is it for vultures to attack living badgers? Something doesn't add up."

He waits for Airin's more in-depth look, but begins to feel less comfortable with the situation.

Kendry
Monday September 17th, 2007 10:45:09 PM

"A badger, is it, Julian? I like badgers. Maybe you can talk with it, eh? Or Airin might." Kendry continues riding forward, as he already was doing.

"You wouldn't mind some target practice at vultures, now, would you, Jules?"

Julian
Monday September 17th, 2007 11:16:06 PM

"Target practice? Let's leave them be. I'm hungry, and I'd like to sleep in a real bed."

Podo  d20+7=22
Tuesday September 18th, 2007 12:33:17 AM

Podo puzzles out loud..."hmm...how large of a carcass did you say Airin? What kind of animal would take refuge inside the carcass of an animal, especially something that looks like a Badger? Must be something real good for them buzzards to continue trying to wrassel it away from a badger, eh?"

Moving towards and then looking over at the carcass, Podo tries to see something different then what Airin discovered.

Fickle
Tuesday September 18th, 2007 8:43:00 AM

Fickle finishes the roasted pieces of chicken that was in the bucket, "Ahh! That'z was good! Me ready for nap! Where we'z sleep? Inside? Me'z get the window Bed! Out side? Not near the badger? Me'z Hope?"

DM Glenn
Tuesday September 18th, 2007 10:08:07 AM

Airin returns to the group and tells about the usually large badger fighting off the buzzards.

Checking for tracks on the path leading around the ravine, other than miscellany buzzard tracks Tobias spots a group of tracks that look about a week old of some half dozen small humanoids with riding dogs heading in the opposite direction as you. They look oddly familiar.

Julian talks to Shark and voices his unwillingness to let his totem animal be harmed.

Selithe leading Gra keeps her bow handy.

Surprised by Julian, Dwight questions the eating habits of badgers.
Anyone Nature Check DC15 Highlight to display spoiler: {Badgers are omnivorous. They eat worms, rodents, frogs, slugs, fruit, nuts, wheat, corn, grubs, and carrion. Dire one probably eat anything they can catch that doesn't eat them first.}

Liking badgers, Kendry suggests talking to it, and shooting the buzzards. Julian would rather leave them be.

Puzzled, Podo moves forward to take a look for himself. The buzzards squawk at him, but move out of the way giving him a clear view of what's left of the carcass. It appears to have been some sort of large flying animal that was killed and skinned. Oddly it all seems very familiar to you. The large badger is standing inside the rib cage gnawing on bones and dried flesh. He gives a warring growl if anyone gets too close.

Fickle finishing his snack, mentions he's ready for a nap.

Its about midday, everyone is able to recognize this is the end of the ravine where you fought the two Manticores. The path leads right by the corpse, badger and buzzards. There is plenty of bushes and trees to the side of the path, which the group can use to bypass the scavengers.

Airin and Fioni
Tuesday September 18th, 2007 2:38:19 PM

"hahaha... looks like we got a little jumpy over the mayhem we caused earlier!" Airin laughs.

Airin looks up at the sky and if the weather is still unpleasant she keeps Fioni safe. If it has improved Fioni pops out her head but waits a few moments to have her wings recover from being cramped under the cloak.

Julian
Tuesday September 18th, 2007 6:20:10 PM

Julian is glad that we're leaving bypassing the badger and buzzards. He is in a light hearted mood, and sings a little ditty, hoping others will join in:

Oh you can search far and wide,
You can drink the whole town dry.
You'll never find a beer so brown
But you'll never find a beer so brown
As the one we're drinking in our town.
You can kick your fancy ales.
You can drink em by the flagon.
But the only brew for the brave and true . . .
Comes from the Green Dragon!

Dwight  d20+3=18 d20+9=17
Tuesday September 18th, 2007 10:53:37 PM

Dwight keeps a close eye on the rear of the group for a good distance once past the badger. He always invisioned them more plant eaters than meat. He also wants to make sure they are not being followed by badger or vulture. Dwight keeps his unknocked bow out for quite a ways before finally giving into the lighter mood, though he does no singing.

Selithe  d20=11 d20+2=13
Wednesday September 19th, 2007 12:37:53 AM

Selithe moves to follow the group, giving the dead creature a good distance as she does. She does try to keep her eyes and ears open for anything as she stretches abit. She grins as she tries to think of something else she can play trick wise on Julian, she can't help but enjoy playing tricks on him, as long as their harmless for she wouldn't want to hurt her friend.

Grinning Selithe wiggles her fingers while moving up close to behind Julian, using a ghost sound spell to make it sound like some badgers are following him. She grins and winks at him, "Leader of the badgers."

(Spot:11 Listen:13)

(I'll post spells and if we get into combat before sleeping again and will make note of using a ghost sound spell and the presidigitation. Also, spells says the ghost sound makes noise equal to 4 humans per caster level. So that means the ghost sound would be making badger noises equal to 12 humans. Not sure how many badgers that would be but oh well. Figure it might get a laugh none the less.)

Podo
Wednesday September 19th, 2007 1:05:35 AM

Podo grins to himself, then turning returns to his friends and lets loose a hearty laugh..."that's our doing, cuz...that appears to be the manticore remains, when Fickle over there skinned one." laughs Podo. Scared ourselves did we!

Podo moves to be in the middle of the group.

Fickle  d20=7

DM Glenn
Wednesday September 19th, 2007 9:54:46 AM

The group of adventures choose to leave the wildlife be and continue on their way via a small detour through the bush. Tobias leads the way with Kendry and Julian singing as they and the rest follow. After a bit Airin, lets Fioni take wing. Dwight keeps watch just incase the badger or vulture follow. At one point he thinks he hear the badger, but its only Selithe playing a trick on him. Podo grins to himself about scaring themselves and Fickle seems proud of his handwork upon seeing the manticore remains.

The group continues on until evening, camping near the spot where they found the ghost of Sharles the Ex-Justicar.

As the comment of watches comes up she smiles, "I'll take any you wish to wake me up for really."

With this said she sits down on her bedroll and lights up her pipe before shuffling and flipping through her deck of cards. When a meal is made by those who can cook in the group, since her skills deffinetly aren't going to produce eddible food most likley, she will get something to eat and then get some rest till it is time for her watch.

"Selithe, did I ever get round to giving you that present I spoke about last week?"

If not, "here it is... thanks for helping with learning to read."
