Lesser Deaths


Wind Walking (DM Cayzle)

The spell is cast by versatile Emrys, and you assume the gaseous form of wind walkers.

You fly at top speed north across the Dreadlands. It is a patchwork land, as Barratore notes. There are gloomy dead places home to crypts and caves. There are wild brambles and bog and thickly forested places, home to deer and rabbit and felines and wolves. There are villages that burst with greenery, home to mortals even under the Dreadlord. And there are places that are recovering, starting to see new life after years of gloom.

As you near where you think you are heading -- is there a glint of ocean on the far horizon? -- you look down to see ...

Well, more specifically, it is keen-eyed Tishe' who sees a conflict on the ground below. A group of mortals ... human-sized folk, mostly ... are under attack. Maybe they are refugees from Effacia, since they seem to have been coming from the north? They are beset by human-shaped, black-robed undead carrying scythes. Who are reaping the mortals like a farmer reaps grain.

You are 500 ft up. Remember, a wind walker flies along at up to 600 feet per round (60 mph) with poor maneuverability. ... Each change to and from vaporous form takes 5 rounds.

What do you do?

Emrys turns his gaze down below to the undead harvesting the mortal souls. He tries to Identify the undead to assess the mortals chance of survival in the time it would take to solidify and fight.

He telepathically communicates what he determines to the others. "They can't be wraiths ... they're powerless in sunlight! NOO ... they must be [enter name here]!" A hasty description soon follows. "If we can't materialize in time to save them, we can certainly avenge them!"

Emrys moves with the group ... he can think of no other way to materialize more quickly. If it wasn't for those infernal verbal components!

Tishe’ blinks, and then understanding lights her face. “Jesting”, she says as if to herself, “Trellus always said I weaved too seriously.” And then they are WindWalking.

She spots, telepathically relays the information, and listens to Emrys. “Couldn’t agree more! Keep together and as soon as I can, I will Cast FeatherFall for those that need a smoother decent.”

Tishe’ begins to solidify and Readies FeatherFall.

Barratore gives the scene below a look quickly Perception 33 and estimates as best as he can as to where the people are fleeing to so that he can land at where they will be

The fighter drops to 80' above the ground and begins to solidify, slowing to the 10' speed from there on in. He's never tried to shift while moving, but surely it would not take all of his concentration to do so and at worst, he'll come in a bit hot he figures

The casters begin to change form and to descend.

But Barratore wants to do more, even if it is risky. He heads down at speed, not worrying about the possibility of misjudging things or crashing. [OOC: Kudos on your courage, my friend. Please accept a hero point.]

Tishe' sees this and readies a feather fall, if needed.

Edson and Lanliss, inspired by Barratore's example, follow him down.

As he gets closer, Emrys takes a close look. He sees that this undead looks like the personification of "Death" -- grim reaper look, scythe, the works. In fact, this is the same "Lesser Death" that one finds in stories of a Deck of Many Things.

The scythe-wielding undead continue to attack the refugees. But as Barratore rushes in, one turns to confront the minotaur. It moves to engage him. It hits AC 31, a miss.

Next round Lanliss and Edson will arrive. After that, the casters, Then the transition to solid will be over.

Answering Barratore, he says, "Certainly, the very next chance I get." He awaits to be fully solidified. Death Ward ... a difficult spell indeed, many components ... thankfully, he can deliver a touch spell from a distance. The roots of his power slither deep and far.

He does his best to assess the situation ... how many and how far away ... and most importantly; are the targets within 30 feet of each other.

Tishe, Velarin, and Emrys spends this round descending.

Lanliss and Edson descend as well, but faster. They arrive at the end of this round. Lanliss has the clever idea to try to trick the undead with taunts about paladins ... but alas, while Wind Walking you cannot talk. Your TelepaTattoos let you communicate with each other, but as gaseous cloud-like figures, you make no more noise than a fog bank rolling in.

Barratore falls back and hunkers down -- he presents as a target, not as an attacker.

Lesser Death One follows next to Barratore -- it seems to be hasted -- and now that the undead thing has an idea of the taur's defenses, it tries magic for his two more attacks in two rounds. It casts a Plane Shift and tries to touch Barratore. With the +6, his touch ac is 22. The undead only fails to touch on a nat 1, and it touches. Barratore, please make a Will Save vs being sent to the Elemental Plane of Fire, Will DC22.

But bad news ... these creatures exude an aura of misfortune. Anyone within 10 feet rolling d20s has to roll twice and take the worse roll. So Barratore has to make two will saves.

At the moment, the two undead are not within 30 ft of each other.

If he is close to the undead he will wait for an attack to see how these undead things attack and behave.

Lanliss will move near the undead that is attacking Barratore and will proceed to act in a defensive stance raising his short sword, ready to parry the undead attacks.

The thing comes at Barratore and reaches for him. The fighter twists away once , but not a second time and he feels a pull. It tugs at his will, sending him away. Barratore proves the stronger this time and staves off the reproach. Barratore then moves back and upwards 50’. Could they fly? He would soon know

Velarin and Tishe continue to descend.

Barratore backs away using a withdraw action.

Lanliss bravely acts to engage Lesser Death One, just as Barratore backs away. Please accept a hero point -- your brave action means the enemy cannot kill an innocent this round. Lanliss takes a defensive stance, +6 AC, since he cannot fight yet, booting his AC to 32.

Edson and Emrys arrive.

YOU ARE NOW ALL MATERIAL. If you are in the air, if you cannot fly, you float down up to 60 ft to land safely.

Lesser Death One moves to Lanliss and takes a swing with that nasty scythe. It rolls a 45, a nat 20! It follows up to confirm ... a 36 does confirm against Lanliss. Lanliss takes (2d4+14) x2 ... 44 damage, and make two will saves vs DC22 or suffer four negative levels. It is usually 2 levels, but this enemy specifically doubles that on a crit.

Lesser Death Two continues to slaughter the civilian refugees.

You can all act normally now!

Tishe’ casts her readied FeatherFall, and takes assessment. The first thing for Tishe’ is protecting the Orphans (People in the Sargrass without homes were all called Orphans) and Tishe’ remembers force effects work on incorporeal creatures...

Selecting a group of Orphans, Tishe’ casts Resilient Sphere, not at the Lesser Death, but the Orphans; protecting them in a force bubble 18’ in diameter!

Then, a Quickened Resilient Sphere protects a second group!

Of the same mind as Tishe' regarding any refugees in danger, V will cast a wall of force to separate as many bad guys from innocents as possible, 20' high and 90' long. If no innocents are in immediate danger, V will drop the wall between Lanliss and his attacker.

V then launches a quickened fireball at the undead, but only if he can get some of them without getting any of the good guys. (43 damage, reflex save 24 for 1/2)

Emrys immediately casts with the help of his Rod of the Quickening two Death Wards for both Barratore and Lanliss. He twists and warps the arcane energies of these spells to deliver the touch from a distance.

[OOC: Here's a flavor post while we wait for Lanliss, Edson, and Baratorre. You casters who have already posted, please make an RP post or revise your action or make a skill check ... ]

The battle resolves into one skirmish, Lesser Death One vs wounded Lanliss, with Baratorre 60 feet above. And another, 60 ft away, where Lesser Death Two has been stymied in his efforts to slay the civilians. Edson, Emrys, Tishe', and Velarin have just come in for a landing --- you can specify your position when you post. It is not necessary to use a feather fall to float down and simultaneously materialize in the desired location.

The Lesser Undead fighting Lanlis snarls, and a deep rumbling voice wells from within his cowl. "You sought Death, and now Death takes you!"

Lanliss feels something, as if his essence was taken away in an instant and then given back after a few moments later, he feels as if he is going to vomit but the enemy in front of him leaves him no choice but to try the dagger he found at that magical shop.

He takes his special dagger and stabs Death himself with all he got, screaming as he stabs, not thinking for once about what might happen next (enemy attacking).

Having a good bit of reach with most of his spells, V will try and land about 70 feet from either death. V will then cast a fly spell, and ascend 30' and cast a quickened magic missile at death 1 for 31 damage

FIRST ROUND WITH FULL ACTIONS POSSIBLE ...

Tishe' casts two resilient spheres, and the refugees are happy to accept the protectipoj

Velarin' sees that the refugees are protected, so he lands, casts Fly, flies up, and then shoots a quickened magic missile at Lesser Death One. That inflicts 31 damage IF Velarin can beat its SR27! [OOC: I'm ignoring your first post about the wall of force, and using your second post.]

Emrys casts Death Ward on both Lanliss and Baratorre.

Edson shoots at Lesser Death One, in melee with Lanliss. His first attack hits with a 38 (not a 28 as reported! Gotta watch that die roller!). His other two attacks miss its AC31. Edson's first arrow hits for 13 damage.

Lanliss has his undead bane dagger ready for just this situation. He hits once through the undead's aura of misfortune for 13 damage.

Barratore shoots several times at Lesser Death One, but only one connects (though the others come close), for 29 damage.

The Lesser Deaths act.

Lesser Death One is willing to go toe to toe with Lanliss. It is hasted and swings that scythe like a chainsaw. The undead hits AC 39, 35, 35, 28, and 21, so that's four hits. The damage is 19+21+18+18 = 76 PLUS four fort saves vs DC29; each failed save is another 2 levels drained!

Lesser Death Two takes a double move to air walk right up to Baratorre! He has no time left for another action this round.

Tishe’ is aghast at the terrible damage Lanliss takes; “That monster is going to cut Lanliss’ reeds if we don’t help!”, she shouts. Of course, herself, Velarin, and Emrys can help, and at a distance.

The Spellweaver delays, waiting for her spellcasting companions to neutralize the Lesser Death on Lanliss.

Answering Velarin telepathically, he says, "Yes, I'm surprised it worked so well. I always wanted to try a Heal spell on the undead. Positive energy is their bane. We had to slay them quickly, I had a good idea what their abilities were. You know the saying, there are much worse things than death ... and they were it!"

He looks to Lanliss and removes a small pouch from his backpack. "I have Lesser and Greater Restoration ... the first won't help poor Lanliss ... the latter would be overkill. I can make a divine appeal to Culverwood (1/day) and gain access to the appropriate Restoration. Have no fear Lanliss, your vitality will soon be restored."

Emrys begins to make his request and his skin takes on the appearance of a rough wood grain and tree bark, much more so than usual. His eyes turn a pale green and he gazes on you all, as if he were looking at you for the first time. He turns his attention back to Lanliss and he pours a portion of the diamond dust into his hand and then grasps it tightly. He lays his other hand on Lanliss and suddenly an energy is passed from witch to rogue. Before anyone can blink an eye, Emrys is back to normal ... with an exception to his hands and wrists (and other parts you cant see)... they still appear wooden, but move as nimble as before.

Edson celebrates victory and then checks on his friend. Lanliss looks and feels perfectly fine ... for a little while anyway. But after the death ward ends, that -12 on rolls for 12 negative levels is going to be very painful!

Tishe' frees six refugees from the protective spheres. At least twice that number lie dead. One living fellow steps forward. "We are greatly indebted to you, heroes. I am Kieran, and we are fleeing the invasion and war to seek help for our homeland. Thank you." The refugees remind Tishe' of the "orphans" of her homeland.

Kieran is a 20-something half-elf with unkempt dark brown hair. His clothes are covered in dirt and small tears. He is missing his right ear, evidently a very old injury, since it is healed fine. He looks quite thin and travel-worn, as do his companions, three women and two men, humans and half-elves.

Velarin asks Emrys if he can help Lanliss, forgetting, maybe, that his wish spell would be effective in restoring his friend. Velarin joins Tishe' in meeting with the refugees.

As does Baratorre. the warrior reassures the refugees and has a couple questions. "Those ... things flew down at us from out of nowhere!" says a half-elf woman.

Kieran adds, "They were cruel, and they started killing us! If you had not arrived, we would all be dead. Thank Lem you found us!" In answer to his other question, Kieran says that they are fleeing the invasion in Effacia, and seeking help, of any kind!

Lanliss feels the ward ending, and he sits, knowing that in a moment he will be experience a loss greater than fatigue or exhaustion.

But not for long! Emrys casts Restoration to remove all the negative energy plaguing Lanliss! Since less than 24 hours have passed, these are temporary negative levels, and they are all removed. Velarin offers his kudos.

Emrys suddenly becomes stiff when Lanliss embraces him. A hug is awkward for the witch, he isn't accustomed to affection ... though he warms up to it in his own way. "Lanliss, you are quite welcome. I would do it many times over, my friend. With this particular foe, I fear you'd be denied your meeting with Gargul if they claimed your soul instead!"

He then realizes that others are nearby and he wishes he hadn't said that out loud.

Telepathically to the entire group, he says, "I fear these beings of death are harbingers of what has yet to come. They are not without a reason. Something more dreadful will arrive in their wake. I'm certain of it."

Emrys answers Barratore, "Yes, Wind Walk is still active for many hours. You can transform at will."

Satisfied that the others are tending to the survivors, Emrys looks to investigate the remains of the two death dealers ... is there anything left of them ... something he could use as a focus for a divination.

"I'm from Effacia, right? Don't know if you know much about the place, but it's a city on a spit of land that pokes out into the sound. So between the merchants and the oyster divers and the pirates and the fishers, you see how they look down on the folks what farms the land. Even though we're the first in danger when the undead comes up from the Dreadlands to the south. Well, 't's okay because we know we're the ones what brings in the crop and gives the people bread. And when danger comes from the south, the rangers sound the alarm and we flee into the city."

"But this time its the city what was attacked from the north! That never happened before. But the undead and the fishmen crawled out of the sea and the Dragon Turtles started attacking, and us farmers and herders were cut off. So we set off south because who else was there to go? And besides, you got some fishmen and zombies and what-not that started wandering over when they weren't busy a-siegin'."

"So a bunch of us went south -- who'da thought that we would flee to the SOUTH for safety! But we ran off without water or food, most of us, when the zombies came on, and the Dreadlands is basically the deadlands, and those death things prolly smelled us living souls and attacked."

"I can cast the mansion Barratore. We won't have it for later, but they need it more than we do. For that Matter, if worst comes to worst, I can teleport us back here. It's up for 36 hours."

V casts the mansion and designates all the survivors as able to use it. He's not sure if it will work, but he also designates anyone that they wish to allow entry to also be able to enter.

V shows the refugees how to enter, how to use the unseen servants, and how everything works. "There is more than enough food and drink to satisfy you all and any who should make it to you and you allow to enter. It will remain up for 36 hours, at which point you will be ejected when it disappears. You may wish to plan your departure prior to that so you are not ejected into an enemy force. If you can, take turns at the front door watching for others like yourselves and allow them refuge as well."

V takes a few minutes to study the location and area in case they need to teleport back here.

Barratore finds his mind changed a bit on Tishe's observation. "That makes sense too. The Dreadlands are still plenty dangerous. These things could simply be left overs and so I think after Effacia, we should work on that."

Barratore feels his heart skip a beat in excitement over the prospect of battling multiple dragon turtles.

"It most certainly sounds like a great push from much farther north. This could be the initial waves, with occupying forces following." Barratore puts a hand on Lanliss' shoulder.

"Fate of the Wold? Dragon groups would be all over it, if that were the case. No, this might be big to us, but still merely childsplay compared to the all Wold events the Dragons are constantly staving off. That's why they need us. To handle this minor stuff."

As Tishe' suggests, it seems likely that these deaths were Dread natives attracted to the refugees -- not part of the invasion force. After all, it is still a long ways to Effacia. Kirian confirms that there were undead in the invasion force, but nothing like these things.

Velarin prepares a haven for the refugees, so that at least they can rest and eat before moving on.

You prepare for travel, change into your misty forms and begins your journey north.

You travel until you reach the port town.

Here is your map.

Coming from the south, you see that farm buildings scattered on the coast -- barns, small cottages, etc, -- have been looted or are still burning. Further on, you can see the city ahead, and a dragon turtle. Do you stop well before the city proper, or do you stop just outside the city, or do you fly and land inside the city?

You make a flying survey of the city from 200 ft. At your speed and height, you may miss some details, but this is what you learn:

The city is under seige. The enemy forces that you see include ...
There is a Dragon Turtle at the gate, on the isthmus that connects the city to the mainland.
There are undead forces, both in the water and on the land outside the city walls.
There are sahuagin a-plenty, but they mostly stay in the water, popping in and out.

The day is very overcast. Unnaturally so. You suspect weather control.

As for the city proper, you observe ...
Magically reinforced outer walls.
Magic wards covering most of the city inside the walls.
The city is effectively cut off. Citizens inside the city are trapped. But you see no riots or burning buildings, so likely officials have achieved some measure of control?

Any other specific questions? You may have to get closer and/or use magic to see details.

Tishe’ mentally listens to the report and responds the same way. ‘I think it safest to land and turn solid here, before the isthmus. With spells as strong as weather control, the attackers could have at least sortied in the city without magical defenses that would prevent dim door and teleportation. We could make it look like a relief column to hearten the city and confuse the attacker too.’

"My first instinct is to try and turn all their forces to ash from 500 feet in the air, but you are right Tishe', there are likely anti-teleportation magics involved as part of the defenses. If they have secured the city, and have some level of control and defenses, then anything we do might actually hinder what they are working on. I think that the best course of action is to meet with and speak with whomever is actually running the show here, and see how we may most effectively assist in their defense."

"I agree with Barratore ... I think we should enter the city and coordinate with the locals ... if we are able. Their magical defenses may block our entry; even from above. Of course, we need only a small crack to squeeze in while in this mist form."
