Everyone gets 2000 xp for the last scene.

Brittanica takes an ethereal jaunt. I'm going to rule if you cast a spell cast it in the post for that day, so I don't have to keep going back and forth to the list, also some things are going to be mute as you learn more, and as we discussed in email. So just hold on and don't get ahead of the story.

Stohp wonders about the wisdom of possessing an un-villainous NPC.
Stock clears a path.
Bartomous has a sense of where to go, basically out the way you came in.
Delia offers to race ahead.
Zanderallen takes back Brittanica's body.

You'all are hasted, but I need to know if you are going to be double moving.

Bartomus points the way and the Shields barrel down the aisle. You make it out of the Temple sweeping some people along with you and head up Diamond Way.

Perception check 25 Highlight to display spoiler: {One group is well dressed and seem very sharp. One spots you, but all he does is nod in your direction. They move to follow but you can outpace them. The other group notice the first group heading out in your direction and they move to follow.}

You may use speed or stealth to avoid troubles.

Bartomus avoids Treelight Lane and cuts a path through the gardens getting you to the Underramp.

Highlight to display spoiler: {You note, just before shifting into an air elemental that Drezz seems to be wearing armor, at least that's what it feels like to you. Though it's very light, it feels like plate mail. It didn't look like he was wearing plate mail though. So there's some form of illusion going on. OOC he's wearing +1 glamored mithral half-plate. So you need heavy armor proficiency or suffer for that. Also spell check failure is 30%.

TO use the elemental body spell first make your arcane spell check failure roll.

I rolled a 33 for your ethereal jaunt spell so it worked.

The Ethereal Plane is a ghostly realm of swirling proto-matter, that exists as a buffer between the Material Plane and the Shadow Plane, overlapping each. A traveler in the Ethereal plane experiences the real world as if the world were an insubstantial ghost, and can move through solid objects without being seen in the real world. Strange creatures dwell in the Ethereal Plane, as well as ghosts and dreams, many of which can sometimes extend their influence into the real world in mysterious and terrifying ways.

Please make a perception check of 15 to keep sight of the party.

Bartomus felt a bit of relief when they got outside of the cathedral. However, he noticed that there were a couple of groups that seemed really upset. He pointed towards a path in the gardens.

"Double-quick now and let's stay together. Just be on the lookout for trouble." He said aloud and started moving rather quickly hoping that everyone keep in close contact with each other. When they got to the Underramp, he waited for the others to catch up.

"Ok, next level, we can either keep going or maybe run to the WLA and see if we can get some help in finding a less obvious way to get him down to our HQ."

Brittanica keeps sight of the party and sees the other air elemental swirling away from her.

(OOC1: this whole chain of events could disrupt her spell casting from her previous post as she didn't take this scenario into account. As soon as she saw the other elemental she would take action to get to the bottom of it)

As soon as she notices it she dismisses the elemental body and looks to see if the other small elemental shifts back when she does. She also looks down at herself upon shifting back. Does she look like Drizz or does she look like herself in some form considering she is in a sort of ghostly realm. Perhaps she was too clever for her own good and really pushed it with the mix of spells she used.

She makes the following rolls to try to sort out what exactly she is seeing with the other elemental and how it reacted to her dismissing the elemental body spell:

If the other elemental shifts back when she does, it looks like Drizz, she doesn't look like Drizz or her knowledge of the arcane surmises that somehow her lifeforce separated from Drizz's body then she tries to reunite the two by moving and touching it and that doesn't work but her lifeforce is still separate from Drizz's body she will cast featherfall on Drizz's body and dismiss the ethereal jaunt trying to repossess the feather falling body upon return to the material realm.

If she finally reunites her life force with Drizz's body in the material realm then she heroically dimension doors over to the party and says, "Remind me to never combine magic jar with ethereal jaunt ever again"

If her experimentation with elemental body plus her knowledge and observations yielded that she didn't separate from Drizz's body and that other air elemental was something else then she tries to keep up with the party but at a 30 foot fly speed they might separate from her despite their speed so she'll still probably do the dismiss etherealness + featherfall/dimension door to reunite with the party visibly, hopefully still in posession of Drizz's body

if she is wearing Stohp's hat of disguise she'll change her outward appearance to a redheaded human woman wearing a green dress and whatever mask Drezz was wearing

Stohp takes the lead. Noting the groups leaving (perception 19) she moves the party along at a quick pace, but not an open run that would draw excess attention to them. Using her knowledge of the area (know local 36) she leads the party in a circuitous route that hopefully leaves behind any pursuers and/or avoids those leaving the temple. They'll still have to take the stairs down, a chokepoint unavoidable, but many of the guests probably live on this level so if they can get there without trouble they might be home free.

"We got the speed right now, let's use it. If somebody stops us on the stairs you give them one chance to back down, and then we hit them hard and fast." Zander shifts Brit's weight on his shoulders as he hustles down the lane with the others, throwing a wary glance back at the two groups outside the temple. Hopefully they could leave both in the dust.

Bartomus heads to the underramp double time.
Brittanica tries to understand what's happening. (below)
Stohp doesn't seem to be paying attention to Bartomus's claim to lead, and tries to take lots of twists.
Zanderallen tries to keep everyone moving double time.
Stock looks to see if Delia is keeping up and notes the Zanderallen still has Brittanica's body.
Ohen calls out Drezz's location.
Delia casts more speed on herself (I'm assuming Longstrider and Haste will stack).

You manage to outdistance the opposition, if indeed they are opposition and just not openly curious. You see many people putting on their masks as the bells of the temple ring. Many people are also rubbing lucky rabbit's feet, amulets, or making the sign to ward off the evil eye.

There's a lot of people in the streets but most are sidestepping you all as the big one's lead the way clearing a path. You easily manage to get to the stairs down. However, there's quite a bit of 'hangers on' on the stairs. Usually that's not allowed but it is sort of a holiday and people are looking down at the level below talking and being a bit festive.

Everyone: Intimidate or diplomacy to clear a path, stealth to weave your way between people. Target 20 for success.

Meanwhile on the Ethereal.
Brittanica reverts to Drezz form and the air elemental keeps on going. Brittanica rationalizes that there are many things that can use the Ethereal plane as a means of transport, since distance and time can be a little distorted. She still is in possession of Drezz's body. NONE of OOC #3 have been cast as you have not had time and the party is double moving. If you want to keep up you're going to have to increase your speed. I'm going to assume you're going to pop back into the material plane at this point, you don't need to cast feather fall I'm allowing that you really weren't that far off the ground. and yes you still have the hat of disguise.

At this point it sounds like Bartomus, Stohp, Stock, and Zanderallen are at the bottom of the underramp and about to head down the stairs. However, Delia and Brittanic are somewhat to the rear because of casting a spell and shifting back and forth . Flying Owen is somewhere between both groups.

Or option B the first group waits for the second group to catch up, however, some redheaded woman seems to be hasitly moving along to join you. You don't see Drezz (and Ohen's eyesight while it could see into the ethereal can't penetrate disguises.)

Sometimes Brittanica was too clever and paranoid for her own good. She had wasted her plans on the ethereal plane over some unexpected air elemental when she happened to be an air elemental so here she was in an unbuffed Drezz looking like a random red headed woman.

(OOC: So Brittanica is still trailing the group after Dimension Dooring in the previous post to catch up? She can dimension door up 800 feet and since the party hasn't changed levels it should be a teleportation that should be allowed or are you saying the party is moving so fast, she dimension doored over and she was still lagging behind)

She isn't sure what to do next or how to get the party's attention considering they are getting further and further away and she can only move 120 feet with a double move.

Presumably Brittanica can see Delia and she calls out to her fellow party member, "Delia, it's me Brittanica using Stohp's hat of disguise that he put on you-know-who! That's why I'm a red head. I'm not sure how I can keep up with the party, my plans didn't quite work out the way I'd hoped. If I turn into a cat or a bat will you carry me and explain things to the party as I won't be able to?"

If Delia obliges Brittanica takes the form of a bat using a 5th level bloodwitch spell to cast beast shape III and she flies onto the other woman's shoulder.

Otherwise if Delia doesn't oblige then Brittanica is going with a modified version of her first plan.
She first casts her prepared wizard greater invisibility on herself and then heroically casts polymorph on herself using a 4th level bloodwitch slot choosing the elemental body 1 variant to regain the form of a small air elemental. She then takes a normal move action to get some distance off of the ground and get closer towards the party

Delia would look a little confused at the redhead running towards her, but believes her (Sense Motive 13), "Why don't you turn into Hawky?" Delia suggests as she offers her arm to her friend.

As soon as Brit is riding on her, she will run to catch up with the group (movespeed 75), whispering, "I have, uhhhhh," She looks at the critter on her arm, "We have everyone."

Zander still isn't sure what's going on in the magical plane but when Delia catches up and calls out he holds for a moment, "Hold up just a moment everyone, we have confirmation on the package. Close ranks on Delia." He give just enough time for Delia to be positioned in the middle of the group, feeling much better about their ability to provide protection, before giving the signal to proceed.

Zanderallen calls out as they approach the stairs, "Official Overlord business, I need these stairs cleared NOW, thank you. Enjoy your Mask Day."

Bartomus followed along with the others and he joined in with Stock's approach. "People, clear a path, we gotta be moving quickly. Sorry, sorry, FOLKS CLEAR A PATH!"

Bartomus shouted and figured that maybe the bear mask would work in his favor. He heard what Zander had suggested but he was in the front and they needed to clear a way for the others to follow. He slowed his pace, but still moved on down the stairs.

HMM, DM Rewrite, making the central stair more of a ramp. Reasons below

The crew, back together, truck down and around the central ramp. They make it to gold level without incident and continue downward. There's quite a bit of people on the ramp, not to mention some baby stroller carts and even a food vendor cart selling hot dogs.
Perception 20 Highlight to display spoiler: {Even with your masks on you see people wave to you and hear, "They are the Silver Shields son, mark them. Even with masks on you should learn to recognize that when two taurs, a dwarf, and several humans are rushing around in a group it's the Shields and there's sure to be trouble afoot."[b]"Who's that the big man is carrying daddy?"}

Halfway down to the merchant level you hear the tolling of the guard bell.
#1 Knowledge Local 15 Highlight to display spoiler: {you realize the guard bell is a signal to all guards to man checkpoints. You're pretty sure there's a checkpoint at each 'ground' level of the central stair case.}

#2 Knowledge Local 15Highlight to display spoiler: {you know the central ramp is broader and more often traveled by large groups and even carts and such as goods move up and down the Float. It's going to get harder to navigate. There's also staircases going around each of the corner towers. They might be easier to navigate.}

#3 Knowledge Local 20Highlight to display spoiler: {You've heard of an interior stair case in one of the towers that the guards use. You're not sure which tower exactly if the rumor is real. Of course if you had enough rope you could always try to repel off the side of the levels and avoid stairs all together.}

Getting past the guards at the checkpoints can be done, but you're not sure how that's going to delay you. I mean you could try to bully your way to the front if there's a line with Diplomacy or Intimidate.

Brittanica takes advantage of riding Delia to use some of the buff's she had been planning to use. Since she knows the metamagic feats of Silent Spell and Still Spell and she can spontaneously cast Bloodwitch Spells she can take a full round and cast Barkskin using a 4th level slot and Shield of Faith using a 3rd level slot. (OOC: I would assume that being on Delia's shoulder counts as vigorous motion for the purpose of spell casting so Brittanica would have to beat DC 10 + spell level concentration checks).

Brittanica being so much smaller than Delia attempts to use the other woman as cover to hide (Stealth: 27 plus whatever Drezz's base Dex is)

Perception: 16 vs 20 = fail

Know Local: 16 vs 15; 25 vs 15; 30 vs 20 = all pass

She knows what the tolling of the bell means as well as about the central ramp and the rumor of the guard tower with the staircase. She also knows about the repelling option.

She tries to do a calculation in her head about how far down it is to their destination's level. Brittanica could dismiss her beast shape and summon her lesser immortal summons a Djinni named Jeanie who can cast Windwalk talking 3 Silver shields with her. Having the 3 shields + Djinni being subject to Wind Walk would allow them to fly at a speed of 10 feet per round with perfect maneuverabilty or have wind waft them along at up to 600 feet per round with poor maneuverability.

Assuming they got near one of the sides summoning Jeanie lasts for 11 minutes. Having Jeanie cast Wind Walk on herself, Brittanica and 2 other shields would take 6 seconds Then 6 to 12 seconds to navigate over the sides with the 10 foot speed. That would leave 10 minutes and 42 seconds to windwalk at 600 foot move speed. Subtract 12 to 18 seconds to allow for time to get back over the railing and they could windwalk safely at high speeds for up to 10 minutes and 24 seconds so that would allow them 6,180 feet of high speed travel. (OOC: is 6,180 feet enough for them to reach the level they need to be on?)

If her calculations give them enough length to reach their destination and the party stops for debate she will dismiss the beast shape spell after getting off of Delia and suggest 3 of them herself included Wind Walk down the sides of the levels using Jeanie the Djinni to facilitate this.

As they come up on the guard station and people start to formulate plans to circumvent it Stohp siighs again. "Look, elaborate plans just draw attention to us and make it more likely we get delayed or someone puts two and two together. The meeting just ended - I doubt news has even circulated down here yet. Which means that no one is even looking for the guy, and even if they were they couldn't spot him because of the measures we've taken. The thing to do is remain calm and proceed through like it's any other day where we had business up here, not try to sneak or rush through like we're hiding something. The latter just makes it so everyone and their kid will be able to guess who's hiding the guy once news spreads through the city of the ritual results."

Zanderallen is holding Brit's unconscious/soulless body. Brit's soul is possessing Drezz's body and has beast formed Drezz to be a bat riding on Delia's shoulder.

Delia will mutter to the bat, "Hey, if something important comes up, tug on my ear and I can cast speak with animals."

If at any point Brit does tug on Delia's ear, she will cast Speak with Animals and translate.

To the rest of the party she says, "I think unconscious Brit is attracting attention... can we step aside and get everyone in their proper bodies? If Brit has more shapeshift-y spells, Drezz could be Brit and Brit could be Hawky. Then we'd look normal."

We need to get down a level, each level we get down the more friends we'll find. This central ramp might be the fastest but we're drawing way too much attention. Let's get off at Emerald Cross and head down the tower stairs. If things get bad we'll be near Rosebud Publishing and can hole up there in an emergency. If we get down to the Barracks and Fence levels we know most of the guard."

Bartomus continued along with the others and overheard the talk identifying them. He also heard the child ask about who was being carried and that was equally worrisome. If a kid could figure this out, someone much more vicious, not necessarily devious, than toddler could do as well. Then the guard bell started to toll and that only heightened his growing concerns as they continued down past the gold level. He also knew that the ramp was going to get more and more crowded as they descended.

Bartomus chuckled heartedly after answering their question about his clothes. " As to them, well, in the hustle upfront in the Cathedral, have you been? The party continues to wend its way around the ramp. There's still a good deal of people moving about. Some are continuing up and some are going down.

Ohen since you are flying - Perception 20 Highlight to display spoiler: {I'm assuming you're a bit off from the ramp flying around, you can see that at the base of the ramp to the Barracks level (which is the blank area north of Chess Street) that the guard has set up another blockade/check point. There appears to be a makeshift tent/hut nearby. They appear to be having people enter and then come back out again...again only the males}.

If you want to move at a normal pace there's no problems going down. If you want to use your 'hasted' state then you eachwill either need to do excuse me's or weave through the people. Remember no one can see your facial expressions.

Delia snakes through the crowd like a shadow (Stealth of +29), if she gets ahead of the party she will stop and wait at the bottom of the ramp. As she waits, she'll look around for any tails or overly suspicious guards (Perception 36), as she does so, she will fade into the background of the urban terrain, trying to not draw attention to herself or the little bat on her shoulder.

"Hey guys there's another checkpoint coming up. It looks like they are only stopping the men in their search for Drezz. On one hand, Brittanica being conscious and hidden with Drezz looking like Brit will be less suspicious, but it requires Drezz to coorporate and never have to talk. Zanderallen agrees with Stohp and slows down to a standard pace, "We should have put some distance between ourselves and any immediate pursuit. We change nothing, nice and easy back home to take care of our poor friend." Zander isn't exactly happy with leaving the possession in effect but back home is the best place to stop it, especially since the guard were actively looking for Drezz. He does worry that he's lost track of Delia in the crowd.

As you round the last corner to the bottom of the ramp to the barracks level you hear a different toned bell tolling. It seems to come from the 4 corners of the town. You realize it's from each of the 'corner' towers. And those that have lived on the Float recognize it as the "ALL CLEAR" bell.

From your elevated vantage point you can see several of the lower rank guards throw up their hands in frustration. Perception 20 hearing, Highlight to display spoiler: {you hear "Just when we get everything in position." and, "What's going on first an alert with no instructions, then vague find this guy messages, then all clear." another guard says "I bet it has to do with Mask Day. I wonder who the approved candidates are?"}

Several of the local people on the ramp just shrug. One passing by you says, "I sure hope my brother gets picked. I'm getting tired of having to lend him money to support his family because he can't hold onto a job." His companion says, "I hear some of the people in the Trash level have actually developed a strategy to get picked."

Bartomus just followed along lost in his own thoughts and just made it along the clearest path that was showing in his mind. As he walked along, he tried to take advantage of scanning the crowd. When he got near the next guard point, the bells started ringing.

He overheard the guards express their exasperation at having been called up to duty, getting things organized, and then being told to stand down. He nodded in understanding as he approached the point and expressed his appreciation for the service of those still standing about.

"Hey folks, we gotta go find the outer stairs down," he shouted over his shoulder. He still walked in the front and made his way to the SE tower via Chess Street and turned down into the little court. He scanned about the area as the streets got a bit narrower and more maze-like.

Britannica doesn't pick up anything regarding the frustrated guards.

She keeps an eye on her time. If she is approaching the 11 minute mark she will let Delia know so that the party can stop and she can re-up her beast shape spell. Alternatively if they can get on the same level as Shield House she can then use Word of Recall to teleport herself and 4 other willing medium or small people back to shield house. That option might work better if everyone is in their own bodies as Brittanica, Drezz and 3 other shields could be back at Shield house while the rest take the long route unless someone else has teleport or word of recall handy. So if the time wears off and they are on the shield house level she will present that option to the team.

Stohp voices a thought and it has you thinking. Who has the authority to sound the alarm bell? Well obviously there's the Overlord. Does the city council have the authority? Did someone on the city council try to stop Drezz from getting to a hidey hole? If so why? And who sounded the all clear? Someone that wants Drezz to get to safety?

As you pass the front of the Broad Blade you note the closed sign in the front door, not uncommon with it being Mask Day and so near the announcement. But Stock notes there are no displays in the display window (and yes there's a grate over the display window). He also sees some furtive movement inside the dark store. Fortuitous, I was going to have to call for a perception check but Stock made it in advance.

Do you stop to investigate or continue on?

To Clarify, Delia said to Brittanica to make a fuss if Brittanica had something to convey or do. Furthermore as a hawk is a small animal if Brittanica did decide to tranform from bat to hawk she could use Still and Silent metamagic feats to raise the level 3 spell to a level 5 spell and not have to worry about shifting back into Drezz before turning into an animal again.

If the plan is to merely become a hawk and not continue to be a bat all Brittanica would have to do is cast a silent stilled Beast Shape I as time was running out and Brittanica could be a ringer for Hawky for 11 minutes.

Turning from a bat to a hawk might be optimal for the time being because the party could keep moving while Brittanica became "Hawky" so if it looks like time is running up and it would be more efficient not to stop she'll just cast a silent, stilled beast shape III and become a hawk however she wants to take it down to the last round when she makes the change as to get the most bang for her buck with these polymorph spells.

Bartomus looked about as they came up to the Broad Blade and he turned about to see where everyone else was. He turned back and saw something move within the closed shop.

"Hey anyone else see that? Something happening in the shop there." Bartomus said pointing at the closed shop that Stock called out as well.

The main display window and the door are on the west side of the building. It is 4 stories tall. Might be some apartments on the upper levels. There is a staircase on the north side that leads up to the third floor.

Looking in the window Stock and Bartomus can see what appear to be three men holding several large swords in sheaths, or at least some sort of covering to allow them to pack them. You can't make them out as they appear to be wearing masks, of course. It appears there are 2 falchions, 5 greatswords, 1 elven curve blade, an Orc double axe, and a two bladed sword. When Zanderallen knocks they look up. They can clearly see you guys in the window. They drop the swords and you can hear several of them ring as they hit the floor. They make a mad dash further back into the store.

"Dang it, they are running. We have runners!" Bartomus shouted and as he did so, he cast a spell to coat one or maybe two of the runners in a violet light. Bartomus concentrates and gives chase after the runners relying upon his provided sense of direction.

Percpetion listen - 33; Know Local - 27; cast faerie fire on two of the subjects if they fall within the 5' radius of the spell. Bartomus has the range. Also, relying upon Britannica's spell to find the best route they might take to flee.

Delia opens her mouth to call out the same thing as Bart and then snaps it shut as she takes off after him. Her hand automatically goes to grab her bow before realizing it's at HQ because of the gosh darn fancy pants customs. "If the Shields can't be trusted with weapons at fancy events then why are we asked to protect the fancy people..." Delia grumbles. She cups her hand around tiny Bat-tanica to make sure she stays on.

If she sees one of the suspects and they are human or half-human, she will use a standard action to denote them as her Quarry.

Brittanica can't see what is going on but she is familiar enough with the local area to know of its proximity to the tower, where the stairs are and where the backdoor of the shop is likely to be, she just can't communicate this to her party members in bat form but seeing as how she has the majority of time on her spell left she does not want to revert forms at this time.

She watches to see what the others do for now from her vantage point on Delia's shoulder.

If things get hairy in another round or so it might be time to drop the polymorph and try to end this so they can secure Drezz at shield house.

Brittanica thinks about what to do, on the one hand they were heroes and they stumbled on a robbery in progress, but on the other hand they were charged with protecting Drezz and confronting robbers could prove hazardous to his help especially when Brittanica is posessing his body and to be effective at spell casting she'd have to revert to her normal form as being limited to Silent, Spelled Bloodwitch spells really puts a damper on her casting options and she's not going to be effective otherwise as a bat.

Zander can't see what's going on but as the other's call out he quickly flies through street geography. As he see Stock coming to check the sides he pushes the dwarf to the right side calling out, "This shop backs up against the tower, back door is on a side. The party splits and gives chase. Stock and Bartomus round the corner of the building to see a side door of The Broad Blade swinging in the wind and the door to the stairs building swing shut.

It's quickly ascertained that's there's no side door (on the ground) on the north side of the building. There is a door at the top of the stairs but that leads into the third floor which is apartments (so is the forth floor). The second floor is apartments too, but no exterior way to enter that, you assume it is the residence for the owner of the Broad Blade and thus there's probably a staircase or something inside the building.

The thieves appear to be moving as fast as you are to have gotten out the side door and into the other door so quickly.

Bat Brittanica continues to hang onto Delia. There isn't much she can do unless the spell is wearing off or Delia actually cornered any of the thieves.

She keeps an eye on her time, hangs on and starts thinking about how if they catch up how she can end any conflict decisively and get back on track to Shield House.

Perhaps Black Tentacles or Summons are in order if they find their quarry.

Stock follows through the door that Bartomus opens and looks up and down the stairs trying to find the suspicious thieves. If he can't see or hear them, he will guess they are going downward.

Verifying that the thieves couldn't have escaped on the north side, Delia heads towards where Stock and Bart are (move speed 45) and try to listen for the thieves as well. (perception 41) If she hears them, she takes off in pursuit, if not she'll go the opposite way as Stock and Bart.

The Stair Guard House is 3 stories tall. The upper stairs enter the building at the third floor. You can see that the doors are closed to the upper stair entry way.

Just as Bartomus grabs the door handle he hears the unmistakable thunk of a bar slamming down from the other side of the door. Sure enough, the door is barred and doesn't open. This is a strong wooden door, reinforced with iron. [i]see page 413 of the Core Rulebook.[i/]

Delia hears the bar coming down on the Stair Guard house and figures the door has been barred. She can vaguely hear some muffled thumping coming from the stair guard house.

Bartomus tried to pull the door in spite of what he had heard. It was definitely, totally, without a doubt closed. He looked at the door and then pounded on it.

"Open up thieves," Bartomus yelled as he pounded on the door. He glanced over at Stock. He shrugged and looked a bit uncertain as to what to do next.

"Don't think we can pound through it. Also don't think changing into something to break it down would go over all that well with the City guard and such. Any ideas?"

Since the party seems to be pausing to discuss strategy once Delia stops to consult with Bartomus she flies from the other woman's shoulder and reverts to Drezz's normal form using Stohp's hat of disguise to become a rea headed woman again but with the same mask as Drezz.

Brittanica says, "I was hoping to keep with my strategy until we got to Shield House but if we are serious about catching these guys, I could return to where I should be and then use Ethereal Jaunt to travel through the wall and unbar the door, however in case they have someone guarding the door I should probably be myself and not you know who just so he doesn't get killed by these thieves. If you guys want I could put a bunch of buff spells on the package before I revert to who I should be, go back to myself, ethereal jaunt and get the latch. I could always use my black tentacles or hold monster if one of their guys is still there. Thoughts on this plan?"

Stohp reaches the guardhouse and knocks. Presuming a guard answers she explains the situation. "Hi, Stohp from the silver shields. My group was coming home from the big ritual thing and noticed someone seemed to be robbing the broad blade. A few of them chased after the thieves, but due to where we were just at we're all unarmed and unarmored so I thought it best to inform the nearest guards of the situation and let them deal with it."

Zanderallen is just about to open his mouth to answer Drezz/Brit/Red-haired lady when he hears the tell-tale sign of Stock pulling in breath before he unleashes his rage. He just about gets to "Stock, N...." before his call is interrupted by the sounds of splintering wood. "Well after them I guess. Sorry Brit, we've become used to a brawn over brains approach, too long without arcane support." He then moves to continue the pursuit, letting Stock and Delia take the lead.

Delia laugh-snorts at Zander's attempt to stop Stock from removing the obstacle and takes off in pursuit of the thieves. Stock isn't one for subtly or waiting around for casting this or that. He knocks as only a barbarian can. Delia immediately squeezes past everyone and enters the room. She can see two people in the garb of the city guard lying tied up on the floor (see the 'x' on the map). One is sort of tucked under the stairs and the other is lying toward the south wall.

The door to the down stairs is open. Delia can hear someone moving quietly around the top of the stairs at the door to the stairs that would wind around to the next floor up (see v on the map). She also hears the scuff of a pair of boots heading down the stairs and the creak of the boards on the outer south wall.

The room is lit by some everburning lanterns.

Stohp jumps slightly as Stock goes through the door (I hadn't realized we all ended up the same place). Grumbling about incompetent guards as she sees the tied up ones she resigns herself to dealing with this nonsense with the rest of the party. "No way to know which way they went so split up I guess. Whoever is carrying Brittanica's body should stay behind, we don't need to be carrying an unconscious woman into combat. We'll be at enough of a disadvantage due to being dressed for ceremony instead of combat."

She's probably going to get her nice dress ruined if there's a fight. She has other dresses but it doesn't make her any less grumpy about the possibility.

Delia dashes up the stair lickety split. She see's the thief crouched and peering out the upper doors. He appears to be in his mid 20's, dressed in dark grey common clothes. He is wearing a pitch black mask. He looks up at Delia, "Uh okay." He holds up his hands. He is not armed.

Bartomus hears what sounds like someone hanging on the outer wall and working their way west. It's a bit hard to tell because the nearby guard is making muffled noises and moving around on the floor like he wants some attention.

Stock moves into the room sniffing, he points up the stairs but Delia has pretty much taken care of that one. He points down the stairs and he glances out the 'doors' where the stairs go down and see's a man working his way along the outer wall. He seems to have pretty good hand strength.

Zanderallen walks into the room and sets Brit's real body down against the wall with care. He then moves to start untying the guards, talking to the young man at the top of the stairs as he does so, "Why don't you come down here and help undo your misdeeds. What were you thinking robbing a store on Mask Day? City wide holiday and here you are causing trouble, you should be ashamed of yourself."

As he scolds the man he eyes him carefully, watching for any body langauge or response to get a read on the man's attitude.

Brittanica races down the stairs trying to catch one of the thieves. She gets pretty close to him and can see it's a young man with shoulder length blond hair. He's dressed in a grey shirt and pants. He has some pretty nice soft leather boots. His back is to her as he's racing down the stairs. You are Br on the map.

Delia hands her prisoner over. He doesn't see to put off by Zander's talk. He refuses to help untie the guards. "I'm a prisoner and I have rights. You can't put me to work. You can't threaten me. Just take me to lock up, I'll await my trial."

Those that can hear what Thief 1 said, Knowledge local 15 Highlight to display spoiler: {Trial might entail you having to testify. Definitely going to take time from your current mission of securing the delegate as you give sworn statements back at the guard station.}

The guard looks up at Zanderallen. "Thanks, my name's Ernie. These guys jumped us earlier. They used some sort of vial of gas that knocked us out. I woke up tied up here and couldn't see where Bert was." He stands up and takes a pair of manacles out of a pouch.

Flying around the building Ohen can clearly see the guy working his way along the outside. Looks like he's going to get back on the Barracks level at i 25. Ohen can see that he's wearing a grey shirt and pants and has black leather boots. He also has some black gloves on. The boots and gloves both radiate magic. He has dark hair and is wearing a black mask.

Bartomus looked about and was a bit bewildered by what was going on and the best approach to be of help.

"So, should I go see what's out on the wall? I mean heck I could change into one of those big spiders we saw or something that could fly?" He offers out loud and looks about for a means of seeing outside.

Caught at the office so got home later than expected. Moving Bart in his present Taur form to PQ27 and if he can see the person climbing the wall, he will take an action next round to change shape and move.

Brittanica had wanted to go after the guy outside but unfortunately she finds herself chasing the guy going down the stairs. Using hold monster is no longer an option because she isn't sure if she could stop the guy from falling down the stairs and breaking his neck however Brittanica does have another option available to her and that is to use Telekinesis as a spell to perform a combat maneuver since it has a long range theoretically she can hit this guy with a grapple and if successful maybe start moving him back up the stairs.

Grapple -> 32 vs CMD no save allowed, spell resistance applies, can grapple him for 10 rounds with concentration

Zanderallen looks around the tower to see if there are any rubber duckies around before answering Ernie, "Glad to help Ernie. I'll get Bert untied while you secure the prisoner. Speaking of prisoner, if that's really how you want to play it fine by me. I was just trying to give you a way to earn a good word from me, but it looks like you're just a hardened criminal with no remorse. Trying to rob the hard working people of the Barrack's level."

He shakes his head at the extra trouble making statements against these guys is going to cause. Hopefully Bert and Ernie could be convinced that only one member needed to make a statement. Then the majority of the party could get back to the safety of HQ.

Brittanica easily lifts the fleeing thief into the air. With no way to keep moving she see's the man's shoulders slump. "DANG it all!" He shouts. Stock is able to see Brittanica staring at the villian with one of her hands outstretched as the man seems to float a few inches off the stairs.

Bartomus peers out the doorway considering his options. Delia just takes the initiative and starts edging out after the dude. She barely manages to hang on but does and makes some headway. That guy must be a an excellent climber or have some sort of magical help.

Zanderallen free's Bert. The tall pale guard stands up. "Thanks. Don't know what these guys are up to but it was probably no good."

Ernie clamps the cuffs on the thief. "You are my prisoner. Anything you say can be used against you in court. You have the right to an attorney. um, what else? Oh yeah you don't have to say anything without your attorney present." The thief just nods.

Bert turns to Zanderallen, "Are you guys going after the one's that got away? It would be great if you would come to the station and make a statement."

As for statements you can take our on the scene statement that we observed these three men in Broad Blade store in what appeared to us as a robbery, we called out and they immediately fled leading us here to find you two tied up. I give you my word of honor as a paladin of Domi and a member of the Silver Shields that we will come by and give full statements but we are engaged on some rather pressing business at the moment that this chase has already delayed us far too long from." Unless there is further protest from Bert and Ernie he moves back over to where he set Brit's body and picks it up again, ready to head down the stairs as soon as the thieves are handed over.

The thief stares at Stock, "How dumb do you think I am. We have a code you know." He remains silent and allows Stock and Brittanica to herd him back to the stair guard house.

Bert nods to Zanderallen. "Perfectly understandable. They're in a good amount of trouble just waylaying us."

Ernie blows a whistle and soon other guards appear. He points out the fellow stuck to the wall. Some of the guards take a look and then they get some ropes. They manage to hang over the edge at i25 and throw a lasso over the bubble. They play with it a bit until the rope on the other side of the bubble from the wall is below the sphere's equator. Two of them hold the other end and pull it taught. They give Ohen the signal and when he drops the sphere spell they snap the lasso tight looping the thief. They then haul him up.

You-all realize that you have spent only a few minutes dealing with these thieves, still it's been a delay. The way is open to continue down the stairs.

Bartomus had lost himself in his thoughts of what he might be able to change into that would bring in the thief. By the time he had narrowed down his options, well, the situation was taken care of by his fellow Shields.

"Sorry," Bartomus said and continued down the turning the stairwell hoping to find it wide open. "we gotta keep moving, I am heading on down."

If their way is unhindered...

Bartomus continued downward as quickly as he could and opened the door onto the Fence Level. He scanned the large roadway that would lead them to their headquarters building.

As you prepare to go more guards show up. So do a variety of passerbye types. They gawk at you and several whisper to each other in poor immitations of stage whispering because speaking through a mask can sometimes be difficult to be heard or understood correctly.

You easily make it down to the Fence level and come out on between Fence Level Auctions and The Fish House. Even closed for the day the smell of fish is strong in the air. It is here that the daily catch is auctioned off and where the the fish stalls are for smaller scale shopping. You are on the south end of Lakeview Passage Street. There's several people that spot you.

Delia sidles up to the two black clad figures. When she pops out and asks her question one of them yelps,"Oh My Gosh you startled me!" The other figure jumps a good foot into the air and then misses his footing as he lands and sprawls on his face.

The one that screamed stammers, "Doing? Nothing really. We were just waiting for some friends. They were up at the ceremony. We were supposed to meet here afterwards."

Since noone has any opinions about her word of recall teleportation she decides to go for an alternative.

Brittanica smacks her mask with her hand, duh, she forgot about the item being on her other person. In that case she goes back the drawing board on her backup plan and casts haste on the stacked up party instead so that everyone in the group has a minute of haste.

"Timmy, any more of those types lurking about between here and the headquarters?" He slipped two fingers into his pouch and tossed the street kid a gold piece. Except for Delia the party makes it back to headquarters. The place seems normal from the outside and the door swings open...unless you locked it then you have to unlock it.

It's sort of a family dress up day you could say. We're not actually close family, but cousins. You know how it is, get to together on holidays talk about what's happened. Anyway, I guess they are delayed by the crowds. I heard there was a commotion. At least the crier said something along those lines. You know how the message can be garbled at times. I'll have to get the special flier the Weekly Bugle is supposed to have coming out tonight."

The other person nods through all this and then says, "Well pleasure to meet you. But I guess we need to get back to the family."

Delia gets the sense their story is full of half-truths at least. There's at least an element of truth.

Zander breathes a sigh of relief as they unlock the front door and move inside. He's confident Delia will catch up in short order. As much as he is itching to get his gear his first priority is to get Drezz back into his body. He guides Brit-Drezz to one of the arm chairs by the fire and tells her to sit down, "I imagine it will be a bit of a shock to the poor man, let's give him a comfy place to regain his body in... We can talk about the morality of shoving people's souls into gems and taking control of their body against their will at another time."

Zander signals all clear once Stock returns with his weapon, ready to calm Drezz and offer explanation as soon as he is back.

We have one perception check on the HQ and of course Stock did run upstairs to get his flail.

The party realizes while a quick look around has indicated no one in the main first floor room, they have hardly given the building a good search, which really would take a couple of minutes. Also there is the lure of their normal armor and weapons. You recall the Overlord did indicate that the Lords of Diamond would try to kill Drezz.

"Looks like all is," Bartomus said with some enthusiasm which was cut short when Stock went running past and up the stairs talking about getting his flail. Then others came on in and Bartomus shrugged.

He followed the path that Stock had taken, but felt that a little caution would be warranted since if he could remember what they were told to do and that it was in a setting with lots of others, some of those others might just remember it as well. As he worked up the stairs, he was cautious and kept scanning about before heading to his room in hopes of getting out of his court attire and into his more comfortable kilt and shirts.

Am I correct that none really put on armor?

The HQ is empty and normal. Also Delia finds no signs that anyone has been here in the interval while you were gone. So if anyone was heading here you still beat them here.

I recall previously that you have chained the sewer entrance shut. I'll assume you locked the front door as well.

Now that the building is secure, Brittanica releases her spell and reverts back to her original body. Drezz's body goes slack and then jerks and Drezz springs to his feet. "HOW DARE.. I MEAN REALLY.." and other sputterings of outrage and shock.

You can consider him hostile in determination of diplomacy to try and calm him down and hopefully get some answers from him as to what is going on.

You can change the initial attitudes of nonplayer characters with a successful check. The DC of this check depends on the creature’s starting attitude toward you, adjusted by its Charisma modifier.

Succeed– If you succeed, the character’s attitude toward you is improved by one step. For every 5 by which your check result exceeds the DC, the character’s attitude toward you increases by one additional step. A creature’s attitude cannot be shifted more than two steps up in this way, although the GM can override this rule in some situations.
I will override this so you can gain more than 2 steps.

Fail– If you fail the check by 4 or less, the character’s attitude toward you is unchanged. If you fail by 5 or more, the character’s attitude toward you is decreased by one step.

You cannot use Diplomacy against a creature that does not understand you or has an Intelligence of 3 or less. Diplomacy is generally ineffective in combat and against creatures that intend to harm you or your allies in the immediate future. Any attitude shift caused through Diplomacy generally lasts for 1d4 hours but can last much longer or shorter depending upon the situation (GM discretion).

Retry? You cannot use Diplomacy to influence a given creature’s attitude more than once in a 24 hour period. If a request is refused, the result does not change with additional checks, although other requests might be made.

When he cleared the second floor, and heard come back down from the third floor, Bartomus stepped into his room and changed out of his courtier's attire. He started to hear something from down stairs and rolled his eyes as he put his kilt on and pulled on his common day shirt. He grabbed his glave and headed back towards the noise and shouting.

"What by the forge has you all worked up? We just saved your tuckus from the mob." Bartomus shouted in an effort to try to calm down their "guest."

I knew I shouldn't have tried to role diplomacy - he's not made a role yet - I not only got a 1 but got a 0

She will pace the first floor and keep watch out of any windows and listen for any disturbances.
She also sends Hawky to the roof to Watch HQ. If he sees anyone approaching (as in, moving directly towards the building) he will screech a warning.

Stock comes back down into the main room of Shield HQ to find a ticked off Drezz. He whispers to Delia, "I missed the start...and I was going to get popcorn."

Stock waits patiently to get a word in and finally says, "You don't need to thank us. You don't even need to like us. But surely you realize your life is in danger."

While the floors are being cleared Zanderallen will take a minute to hastily don his backup Chainmail, not wanting to take the time to plate up.

Once Brit gives the signal he prepares for what he assumes is going to be a very upset Drezz. The man's reaction does not surprise him and he puts on his most charming smile. He makes sure his WLA badge is visible and answers the tirade Drezz is unleashing. Even prepared he is almost caught off guard by the man's fervor but heroically keeps his tongue moving, "It's ok Drezz, you are among friends. I apologize for the manner in which you were brought here but things got out of control very quickly in the Cathedral and Brit over-stepped in her methods. But here sit, enjoy the fire, somebody get this man a cup of tea, I'm sure his nerves could use it." He continues speaking very calmly and soothingly, letting Drezz get it out and calm down, If he can get him calm he starts asking some questions, "Have you ever heard of the Lords of Diamonds before? Are you a member? Do you know why you would be favored to be Overlord?"

Drezz slumps into a chair. The offer of tea is quickly accepted. You can tell his hands are shaking as he holds the tea cup and tries to drink. His eyes dart about. He looks at Delia, "At least someone has appointed themselves guard."

Delia Perception 20, Highlight to display spoiler: {The eastern windows, in fact that whole wall buts up to the lake. The only way to assault from that quarter would be by boat or water walking. Glancing out the north windows you see people moving about their business as normal. Nobody seems to be standing still and staking out the front.}

He sets the tea down. "I guess those spells will be effective for now." He squirms a little. You surmise he's not used to wearing armor. He keeps trying to find a place to put his feet and elbows. "Okay, have I heard of the Lords of Diamond, who hasn't that lives here. Am I one, Yes. I've managed to infiltrate them as part of a plan by Overlord Aerashkiel. It's been a long time in working, 10 years sort of undercover." He looks up at you. His eyes fairly flashing and his jaw muscles bunch up. "I hate the Lords of Diamond, but one more than any other."

Stock begins donning his armor. As he does so he strips off his courtier clothes and rolls his eyes at any comments to him dressing in the open.

"What did Aerashkiel want with the Diamonds? And what role do you play working for him?...and given all of this, why did you become a candidate in the election? It's pretty hard to be undercover and also a public figure.

Anybody want to help me with these straps? You see - this is why I wanted to wear armor to the ceremony. Mithril is never out of style."

Drezz shakes his head, "Yes and no. The problem is the Lords of Diamond have no central power structure. It's very weirdly organized. Heck we even meet in masks or hoods all the time. It's very hard to figure out who's who. Everyone has their own personal goal. Some bring their goals out to vote on when they need more help in securing whatever it is to make their plan work. It's a game to many of them, something to keep the idle rich from being bored maybe. Everyone has a plan written on a special document and when theirs comes to fruition they reveal their document and score points. Until recently the various members have been biding their time. Apparently one of their number they called Lord Crimson had a master plan in place for a long time and had wrangled everyone to help him. I think he was blackmailing some as I learned he had a secret diary from his father naming several of the previous Lords of Diamond and thus their progeny."

Stohp states, "Then Flower must have some reason to call you out and basically blow your cover."

Drezz nods, "I guess so. The current plan among the Lords of Diamond is to try and secure the Overlord position and then whoever does gets to force the others into some grand scheme. Apparently several have really big plans that need to be enacted with the power as Overlord. Our plan all along has been to get as many members identified and then expose them all to the public, figuring the backlash would force them to leave the Float."

Stock has a volley of questions, ""What did Aerashkiel want with the Diamonds? And what role do you play working for him?...and given all of this, why did you become a candidate in the election?"

Drezz responds while trying to avoid looking at Stock. "Basically the Lords of Diamond have been a thorn in the side of the Overlords for a while. Whenever polices are enacted or proposed to help the people out, they get twisted or road-blocked, or even sued against by various people. Not all of troubles are actually diamond members, but they seem adept at stirring up the population, of getting other concerns to sideline activities, why I found out recently that one of the Lords of Diamond had actually invited in the pirates that recently attacked with some ridiculous lies and down payments of treasure."

Bartomus asks, "Fill me, I mean us, in on why the Lords of Diamonds need to be infiltrated and part of something that THE Lord Aerashkiel and you do you actually hate?"

Drezz smiles, "Actually I think the first part of your question I've answered. The Lords of Diamond consider the Float their playground. They don't want things to run peacefully and prosperously because then they can keep pulling the strings and having their games." His smile vanishes and his face turns grim, "As to why I hate them I discovered that my sister was an agent for the Float. She was assigned the task of routing out the Lords of Diamond. She started getting too close to someone and she was killed, most violently and ... " he trails off and you can see some tears coming to his eyes. "I have yet to find out who was involved in her killing but I will and I will exact vengeance on all of them by removing them from the city."

Delia No need to roll yet wonders, "Why would these Diamond Lords suddenly want to kill you anyway? Was your cover blown by the election?"

Drezz shakes his head and relies to Delia, "Killing is the punishment for being revealed as a Lord of Diamond. It's one of the rules from the membership. If you are discovered you are to be slain to keep you from revealing any plans you may be in possession of. Probably because some Lords of Diamond hold no loyalty to the organization or others, and would try to cut a deal to avoid prison or banishment."

Zanderallen lets fly, "How did you get involved in all this? How or why did the Overlord recruit you? You say you bear a grudge against one Diamond Lord in particular, who and why?"

Drezz says, "After my sisters death I volunteered. Her death was not quick and was most gruesome." the rest has been answered

Drezz nods, "I imagine they generate some of the rumors themselves just to keep everyone guessing. I've been able to discover the names of 5 of them. As to what they want, they each have their own goals.

She says to her fellow Shields, "I've got a bad feeling about all these questions that Drezz just answered. Is Shield house warded from potential hostiles teleporting here? I would hate for some invisible assassins to teleport in and try to kill Drezz. Do we have a fortified panic room or something we could stash him in?"

"Ma'am," Bartomus said turning towards Britannica. "you've met us, warding this place? I mean it's a great idea and we should do something like that, but heck some mornings, us getting up and eating is an achievement!"

He laughed at his own "funny because it is true" joke.

"So, if the Diamonds are the barrier to a lot of things that the Float needs, then how do we ferret out who is all associated with the Diamonds? Start printing names and how they are causing problems that could result in an uprising - those may not go well."

Zanderallen listens to the answer from Drezz in shock, horror, and fury. Lord Crimson, the running of the Float, the stratifying of the levels, the wanton abuses of power, the pirates, all backed by some cabal of rich powerful families trying to stay in power?! This abuse of strength was the exact reason he had felt called as a servant of Domi as a youth, to stand up for those who had been so beaten down they had forgotten how to stand for themselves. These Lords of Diamond represented everything he hated, everything he stood against as a servant of Domi.

He moves in front of Drezz and draws his sword, letting the flames ignite along its length as he kneels and stabs the tip into the floor boards. His voice echos with cold fury as he takes an oath, "Drezz, your sister's blood and the souls of the oppressed people of the Float cry out. I, Zanderallen, servant of Domi, answer that call. I swear to you by everything that I am, they will be avenged. The Lords of Diamond will be thrown down." As he finishes his statement his hand crashes to his heart in military salute. He stands and moves to the front window, away from the others, keeping watch with a iron gaze.
