Something about a very large, perfectly manicured glen, smack in the middle of the woods where it has no business being, has most of the Silver Shields a bit on edge.

Stohp tosses some sticks and rocks onto the lawn. They never hit. Instead, the debris stops a couple inches above the blades of grass, and then slowly float/hover/flow toward the woodline, where they fall back to the ground.

Micah casts Detect Magic, and takes an involuntary step backwards.
Its ALL magic. The whole glen. Grass, trees, path, building….the whole area radiates an overwhelming aura of power.

Bartomus, Dorbin, and Micah suggest using the pathway.

Sid ignores everybody, and moves forward onto the lawn, keeping an eye out for traps.

He finds none.
Neither is he attacked.
Nor is he forced off the grass.

He seems fine, and is currently 30’ away from the woods, and 120’ from the near side of circle of oaks.

"Siiiid," calls Micah softly after recovering from the shock of what he has seen, "You are in the middle of some serious magic. Hold on why we try to learn more.

He then concentrates further on the aura, trying to determine its type.

"Yea, I think that using the path makes a lot more sense now. Just gotta say, a straight walk to the path, and then, we try to figure out what we have here." Bartomus began to walk along the edge of the forest and the clearing towards where he would be making the least of any intrusion on the magic grass and be able to walk to the path.

Stock grunts at Sid walking out onto the green. He watches Bart walk off and then focuses back on Sid. He carefully straps his flail to his pack and leans forward, ready to dash forward and pull Sid back if needed.

Zanderallen watches nervously as the sticks Stohp threw magically float off the perfectly maintained lawn. "Do we use the path or follow Sid up to the trees and wait there for him to scout the building? Because one way or another we're committed now."

Sid looks up and notices their concern (Sorry, I thought I was walking down the path), and steps back on the path. He goes back to them and gets filled in, "Oh, sorry, a bit of tunnel vision there. I'll make sure I stay on the path this time." Unless someone stops HE GOES DOWN THE PATH LIKE A SMART BOY.

Micah alerts Sid that he might wanna be really careful. Then the cleric, mage, and bard get together to work out what type of magic they’re dealing with.
Dorbin is pretty sure the school is Transmutation, but as to the specific spell...affecting this big an area for this long?...he’s stumped.

While most of the Shields continue to debate, or keep a close eye on Sid, Bartomus works his way to his left to get to the path.

Sid also cuts to his left, gets on the path, and then continues to the trees.

As he begins passing under the canopy of the nearest oaks, the rogue freezes.

Sid - Highlight to display spoiler: { There is a medium sized something on top of one of the lower branches near the trunk of the closest tree. It is really difficult to make out, as it is blended and blurred in with the colors and shapes around it. }

Sid is 20’ from the line of oak trees and the beginning of the depression, just under the canopy.
Bart is on the path, 110’ from Sid.
Everyone else is 40’ east of Bart, and in the treeline.

Bartomus continued his walk along the treeline. His focus was on Sid and as he continued to walk, so did the Taur. Bartomus picked his way carefully and froze when Sid froze. It was then that he realized that he and Sid were the only two that had continued walking.

"Psst, hey um Shields, um, psst" Each word got a bit louder even though he was trying to whisper. "You all are coming, right?"

"Oh, no", Zander mutters as he looks up from the discussion the scholars in the party are having to see Sid frozen down the path. "Running and screaming, you promised running and screaming." Zanderallen beings running down the path towards Sid.

Dorbin continues to study the area, not quite sure what to make of it. He mumbles, "Transmutation magic, but what...?" He takes out his notebook and starts making notes, apparently oblivious to Sid and Bart's activities.

Stock welcomes Sid back onto the path and then readies his flail as they begin to walk. All in all, he's a bit slower to react than Zanderallen and even feels the big paladin run past. For once, Stock WON't rush in as he watches to see what Sid found.

When he hears Zander react, he looks up. "Oh, no," he unknowingly echoes the paladin.

"Something is up," he tells the others , nodding his head in the direction of Sid. Not being very mobile himself, he stays put, keeping an eye out for any developments.

Dirk takes out his lute and begins to play, casting a spell very familiar to all around. As he plays, he walks over and says a few words and touches Dorbin. "Maybe this will help you, friend Dorbin."

Sid looks up at the medium sized creature trying to get a good look at it. This is fine, this is fine, he thinks, as he processes what he is seeing. The he hears people screaming and running him and visibly winces. "Well," he says softly, "at least I know they care." He says a little louder, "Hey buddy, how are you today?"

Bartomus freezes on the path, echoing Sid’s sudden stop.
He also calls out to the rest of the Shields that some help may be needed.

Stock pulls his flail and moves forward on the path.

Zanderellen takes off at a run to get to Sid’s location, clanging past both dwarf and taur.

Stohp follows, but more slowly. She advances with a tanglefoot bag at the ready.

Dorbin, Micah, and Dirk stay where they are.
Dorbin is still trying to figure out the nature of the transmutation magic, Dirk attempts to help him while looking around, and Micah is trying to keep an eye on everybody.

As non-threateningly as possible, Sid calls out to the whatever.
"Hey buddy, how are you today?"

In response, the whatever glides around the tree trunk to the far side, hidden from Sid’s view.
Sid still can’t get a read on what it is. He didn’t really see a shape, just a spot in the trees that seemed less defined that its surroundings. Even while it moved, his senses registered the idea of movement rather than discerning actual limbs.

By the time Zanderallen arrives at Sid's position, the blur has moved out of sight behind the tree.

Sid holds an arm out to stop Z. "I wasn't screaming and running because there wasn't a need to do so. Z.. I can see the veins on the leaves of the tree easier than I can that thing." He starts pushing his back as he softly says, "Backup slowly and be ready in case it spooks." Sid can't push Z back, but he will move in concert with his as they back up, if Zanderallen doesn't back up, Sid doesn't back up. "Heey buddy," he calls out, "we're just going to back up slowly alright? No muss, no fuss."

He looks over his shoulder and waves the three magicky types forward and scans the treeline for any sign of whatever has caused the disturbance.

Dorbin nods to Dirk in thanks while he continues to concentrate on the magic in the area. He is confused when he sees some of the group backing up while Stock runs forward and indicates that the others should follow.

As Sid starts moving again, Zander halts his headlong rush and moves back as directed, "Sorry, with all the magic around I was fearful that your freezing wasn't entirely natural." He takes a look at where Sid is looking but ends up so distracted he almost crashes into the elf. Catching himself he continues walking back ready to step in front of Sid if something rushes them.

"Somethings up," says Micah. Not wanting to be too far away to provide any meaningful assistance, he starts to run toward where Sid and Zander are.

Sid and Zanderallen slowly back away from the line of oak trees, while Stock comes hurrying forward to join them.
The elf calls out, but gets no reply.

Bartomus and Stohp remain where they are, scanning the oaks.
Micah comes up to join them.

All six keep a close watch of the branches and leaves of the oak trees, but no one sees anything.

Dorbin and Dirk remain in the treeline, trying to solve the puzzle of the glen. Dorbin gets the feeling there is some kind of Super Control Plant in effect maintaining the glen.

The ziggeraut remains tantalizingly out of reach, down in the depression beyond the oaks.

Dorbin realizes that he's not going to get any further studying this, so he makes a few final notes, then puts his notebook away. Then he realizes that nearly everyone else has walked away. "Hey..." he says, before scampering along after the group.

"Saw some creature up in the trees. I'm going to take a closer look now that you're all nearby, just stay back a little." Sid moves up to the nearest tree making as little noise as possible. He stalks around the tree keeping an eye open for whatever he saw before. If he sees anything he stays as non-threatening as possible.

Zanderallen watches nervously as Sid moves up once again, but trusting the elf he stays back about 60 ft. If the creature was non-hostile like Sid seemed to think the presence of a fully plated armed warrior wasn't going to make peaceful contact any easier, and he could cover 60 ft quickly enough in case of real danger.

Micah continues jogging forward. Having a slightly better idea of what is happening, he explains, "It may not be a factor, but remember that you are hidden from undead. If what you saw is one, then it cannot see or hear you. Also, keep in mind that undead does not necessarily mean evil."

While Micah jogs ahead to catch up with Zanderallen, Bartomus and Stohp move up more carefully. Stohp wonders if they’re just dealing with a monkey.

Meanwhile, Dorbin and Dirk have figured out they’re being left behind, and scamper forward to fall in line behind the two minotaurs.

Zanderallen has held his spot to give Sid some sneaking room, but Stock moves forward just behind the rogue.

Possibly surprising the dwarf, Sid heads for the trunk of the tree where he saw the whatever.

Sid works his way carefully around the tree.

The party has noted before that the oaks are arranged in a large circle.
As soon as Sid crosses from “outside” the circle to “inside” the circle, a barrage of razor-sharp wooden splinters erupt from a point above him in the tree, and into Sid and a small area around him.
Sid takes 30 hp damage, reflex DC 16 halves.

The spot from which the splinters came are obscured to all but Sid by the tree trunk.

Sid - Perception DC 27 Highlight to display spoiler: { It’s the whatever - a medium sized discoloration/displacement/blur in the branches some 10’ above the rogue around H9. The splinter barrage came from it.}

"Monkey, yea, that makes sense, or maybe a large squirrel?" Bartomus said as he watched Sid move slowly forward and around the tree. He had started to laugh at the idea of a giant squirrel causing the ranger to freeze earlier.

Micah winces as he hears the commotion in the trees. "That does not sound good," he mutters as he continues forward trying to join with Zanderallen.

Zanderallen is about to reply to Stock when he sees a hail of spears come from somewhere behind the tree and land around Sid. 'Not friendly' he thinks as he kicks into action mode. Fearful of setting off any additional spears he makes sure to stay outside the tree circle but does move up to support Sid in case of additional danger. "What's going on?"

Stohp calls after Sid. "Whatever it is don't provoke it. If it's just some animal and we pursue it it'll fight just because it's scared of it." Then she turns to Bartamous, "Do you have some sort of spell to determine if it's just an animal? Some detection magic or something?"

Stohp, Bartomus, Dorbin, and Dirk remain where they are.
Stohp calls ahead for Sid to be careful, and then she and Bartomus discuss what sort of creature it may be that the elf has found.

Meanwhile, Sid is getting shredded.
OOC - DM taking Sid’s action, but isn’t happy about it.
Sid still needs the Reflex save roll from previous round


While Stock cannot see the origination point of the attack, the impact on, around, and in the elf of dozens of dart-like wooden splinters is obvious to the dwarf.

Sid drops back outside of the circle, next to Stock.

Zanderallen and Micah also pick up on the rogue having trouble.

Both men move up, with Zanderallen coming over to join Sid and Stock.

"It came from above? And only when you were inside the arc of trees? Hmmph. I take back what I said about him loving this then."

Stock looks at the elf and then looks up at the tree. He begins reaching to climb the tree and then shakes his head. "Any idea if its some kind of trap, Sid?"

More instinct than thought Sid glides around, splinters flying about him. "Gah," he says involuntarily to himself and frowns at the holes in his clothes, "Ffloyd I hate this."

He calls back, "Guys, it's a spike and splinter shooting, blurry looking thing about 10' up. I think it wants to make kabobs out of us."

Previous round -
Sid bobs, twists, and weaves, as the dart sized splinters fly about him.
He escapes pretty much unscathed.

This round -
Micah, Bart, Stohp, Dirk, and Dorbin all move up while remaining on the path.

Sid thinks the group is dealing with some kind of guardian, rather than a trap, and lets the others know his theory.

The rogue tries saying hello in an impressive number of languages.
And, then Stohp adds a couple more.

There is no response.

Micah continues scanning with Detect Magic. Again, the whole area is radiating overwhelming magic. But, the cleric does believe there is an additional aura on the northern side of the tree Sid and company are near. He cannot pinpoint the aura, but he can narrow it down to a 20’ cube (H5 - K8, and 10’-30’ elevation).

Sid has lost sight of it.

Anyone trying to see something needs to make a perception roll please

"I do not like being funneled, but I do not like being shredded by wooden shrapnel. Dorbin's advice seems the best option." Staying on the path, he waits for a response to Sid and Stohp's attempts to make contact.

"Zander! Watch out!" shouts Micah, too late to aid the paladin.

"I saw a magic aura moving Zanderallen's way," explains Micah to the others. "I think whatever is out here is invisible which is why we cannot see it."

Drawing his hammer, Micah moves next to the paladin, ready to strike if he see the aura come within reach.

The Shields move to engage.

To clarify, Stock heard something fall from the tree a few seconds before Zanderallen was attacked, not the other way around.
Stock pulls his flail, and moves to the north side of the tree.

Micah and Sid draw weapons and move to flank Zanderallen.

Stohp, Dirk, Dorbin, and Bartomus move up the path.

Zanderallen swings. His sword hits something solid, but at an angle, so that it glances off rather than striking true.

Stohp announces that she can also see it, and launches her tanglefoot bag at it. The bag hits something solid at N8, and breaks apart into resin and goo, and then, no one can see the resin either.

Zanderallen and Stohp see the entity back away, and then lose sight of it.

Then a series of dart like splinters come flinging out from a single point into a cone shaped impact area that affects Sid, Zanderallen, and Micah. The attack came from the trio’s northwest, and was 10-20’ away.

Sid, Zanderallen, and Micah take 19 hp damage. Reflex DC 16 halves.

Zanderallen feels the bite of splinters as they find their way through cracks in his plate, taking a brief moment to run his glowing hand over the worst of the pain he calls out, "I don't think I hurt it but it felt like hitting wood. Nice throw Stohp!" Looking around Zander is at a loss until Stock calls out the position, or atleast what he hopes is its position. He moves next to the dwarven warrior swinging blindly into the same space.

"Wood," repeats Micah aloud. "Could this be the golem foretold in the divination?" he asks as much to himself as to the others. Speaking ideas as they come to him, he adds, "Perhaps Stock's ax will harm it more than the mace or maybe it is susceptible to fire."[b]

So focused is he on figuring out how to overcome the creature, he does not even try to avoid the damaging spray of splinters. To counteract the damage they are taking, he channels healing energy affecting all his allies, but excluding their assailant.

Bartomus asks what’s going on. He wants to continue walking down the path, but the taur is blocked by Dirk and Stohp.

Stock, who can make out the entity, charges it. He brings his axe down with a powerful blow, but does not quite make solid contact.

Dorbin looks over, but can't quite see what everyone's fighting. He starts casting a spell to summon help.

Zanderallen heals himself, and moves next to Stock. The paladin takes a wild swing, and connects with something at L6, but again the blade is not at a proper angle to draw blood, or wood chips, or whatever.

Micah channels more healing energy to the Shields, while trying to figure out what they’re dealing with, and how to hurt it.

Stohp moves in behind Stock, but can’t quite figure out where the entity is.

Stock and Zanderallen feel the entity take a step.
It unleashes a series of blows upon the paladin - spear points and some kind of club - all of which hit really hard.
Zanderallen takes 14, 19 and 7 = 40 hp damage.

Stock jukes right and then ducks his shoulder and dashes around the thing. Finding himself opposite Zanderallen, he grunts and uses his momentum to bring his HEAVY FLAIL around on the thing.

Bartomus could see Zander reacting to unseen blows and the Taur thought of something. He focused on where Zander was being assailed and while he couldn't make out the assailant, he focused his attention on the area where such blows could be coming from and quickly receited an old spell he had learned early on.

"Let's see if this helps us see what's going on." Bartomus pointed at the space in front of Zander and released his hand.

Dorbin finishes his spell and an eagle appears flying just above the creature. It immediately dives and attempts to attack the thing. The strange appearance of the thing seems to confuse the eagle and instead of hitting it, the eagle smashes itself into the ground. Dorbin yells at it, "No, it's over there!"

Micah wordlessly shouts in shared anguish at Zanderallen's wounds, then changes that shout to one of defiance as he sees the druid has a way to counter the creature's invisibility.

Having little more to add than trying to keep the paladin in the fight, Micah channels energy again.

Stohp can make out the creature, and, I guess, reaches over top of Zanderallen in an attempt to grab it. Her hands are batted away.

Dirk still can’t see the creature, but has a pretty good idea where it is, since it’s beating the snot out of Zanderallen. The bard blindly fires a crossbow bolt, which means he has a 50% chance of missing (1-50). DM rolls a 29, and the bolt sails wide.
After firing, Dirk moves up.

Stock is able to circle around the creature on a path that avoids an AoO, and slams his flail on it. There is a very loud crunching sound, and the invisibility cloak surrounding the creature flickers for a moment. The dwarf is certain he got a good blow in.

Bartomus casts Faerie Fire upon the invisible creature. Which is a really good idea. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work. The spell effect appears to fizzle about the creature, and immediately dissipates.

Dorbin summons an Eagle (yellow E on map) and directs it to attack. However, the eagle doesn't see anything, and so can't.

Micah heals Zanderallen.

Zanderallen heals himself, and delivers a strong blow to the creature.
OOC - It is not evil

Sid fires several shots, but they go wide.

However, the combination of blows from Stock and Zanderallen have made their mark. The invisibility cloak falls away, revealing a smooth looking wooden automaton. It has two powerful looking legs, a tail ending in a thick club, and arms that end in sharp points, like spears, rather than hands. Centered in its chest is a circle of spikes that are slowly growing to a dart like length. It’s got a head, but has no visible eyes, ears, nose, or mouth.

It is also covered in a gooey resin, courtesy of Stohp.

Unperturbed by it’s visibility, the creature takes a 5’ step away from Zanderallen, and attacks Stock.
The two spear like arms flick out, and one punctures Stock's armor. Then its tail whips around, clubbing him in the side.
Stock takes 24 hp damage.

He watched the area he directed the spell towards alight in color only to fizzle into nothingness. Then as his fellow Shields slashed at what seemed to be clear air, suddenly a large thing of wood appeared. Bartomus' hands moved in quick succession and then he blew the growing the ball of flame out of his hand and at the creature. The sphere moved into the space between Sid and Stock.

In his rage, Stock really doesn't know what he's saying...or even if he's saying it out loud. "Times like this I wish I had taken up the axe after all. Might make it easier to chop down a wooden thing."

He darts to the side, pirouettes to gain some momentum and swings his flail hard, twice into the thing.
"HA!", he yells out as he makes solid contact.

Some of the group express sympathy for the strange creature lying before them. Others don't.

Micah and Dorbin can confirm Stock's suspicions that it is somehow connected to the rest of the grove, for the two can see the magical aura surrounding the place weaken, and then disappear altogether.

Sid examines it more closely, and finds a fist sized emerald in the creature's torso.

Turning their attention back to the grove, the group notes the ground descends slightly into a bowl. The path leads straight up to the black rock walls of the ziggaraut. From their location, some 100' from the structure, no doors or windows can be discerned.

The discussion around the creature's origin and composition wraps up as the Shields turn their minds to the ziggeraut itself.

Sid leads the way, with Stock trailing behind him, and the rest of the Shields behind him.

Heeding Dorbin's plea, everybody stays on the path.

And so, everyone follows the slight downgrade, until Sid reaches the door/wall/gate, having detected no traps on the way.

The path leads up to what appears to be a blocked entryway, 8' wide and 8' high. The stone lining in the entryway recedes about 4 inches, and meets a solid stone wall.

The walls of this level of the structure are 15' high, and also of solid, black, stone.

Once he sees the rest closing to find a way in, Stock moves in and starts inspecting it as only a dwarf could. He takes out the hand axe from his pack and begins tapping different parts of stone every few feet with the handle side of the weapon, humming a dwarven drinking song softly to himself as he methodically inspects the gate.

He looks about with his magic sense, focusing on the building. Recalling the power of the glade's aura, he cannot help but squint as he inspects the building despite knowing that such an action will not diminish the impact of powerful magic viewed this way.

Sid gets everyone out of a possible killing field, and makes a careful search for traps, hidden levers, and whatnot. He doesn't find anything.

Immediately upon that announcement, Stohp, Dirk and Stock approach and start poking around the doorway.
Stohp finds less than Sid, though her clever attempt at a password gives the DM a chuckle.

Stock determines the construction is really good, for a builder who was obviously not a dwarf. So, mostly good. This section of the building is a gate, most likely with an opening system on the inside, as he also cannot find a lever, handle, handhold, or other feature that might open it from this side.
The dwarf also realizes the gate opens by rising straight up - very much like a portcullis would.

Bartomus and Zanderallen glance around for alternative means of entrance, but see none from here.

Micah reluctantly tries to Detect Magic again. Good news is he doesn't get knocked to his feet this time. But, that is because there is no magic to be detected.

Dorbin announces he's got a spell that might work...um...but doesn't say what it is, so the DM can't say if it works.

Bartomus stepped up when Micah approached the space and mentioned lifting the closed stone wall and Stock reaffirmed what he had asked. He looked at the black stone and then with a closed fist knocked on the door, "Hello? We would like to talk about something important."

He turned back to the others and shrugged. "Well, it was worth trying right? Micah if you want to try lifting this thing, I could probably help."

Zanderallen chuckles as Stock barely makes it onto the wall before losing his hold and crashing to the ground. "Stock I think the gods are trying to tell you something, dwarves are meant to stay on the ground. Come let's see if this door is liftable. If you, Micah, and I can't open it then I doubt it's opening to brute force." Unless another suggestion is made Zander stretches his arms and moves up to the door looking for any sort of seam or crack to get a grip underneath the portcullis.

Dorbin tries casting a simple cantrip on the gate. However the spell’s weight limit is 30 lbs, and the door is heavier than that. His spell doesn’t go well, and nothing happens.

Stock tries climbing the wall. This goes even less well. After getting 5 or 6 feet into the air, the dwarf loses his footing, and comes crashing back down to earth in a cacophony of metal and dwarven oaths. Fortunately, only Stock’s pride is injured.

Bartomus tries simply knocking on the door. But no, it’s not going to be that easy. There is no reply.

Dirk looks again for some kind of triggering mechanism but comes up empty.

Sid looks for seams or cracks. So do Zanderallen and Micah.

It appears to the three that it is possible for medium sized persons to get their bare fingers underneath the stone gate up to their first knuckle. It also appears that the gate will open if they can lift it straight up.
It would take some serious strength to succeed in lifting the large block of stone. But, with a dwarf, a couple taurs, a priest of Domi, and the odd spell or two, there’s some serious strength on hand.

Three medium sized persons can stand next to one another and attempt to lift the gate.
Or, one medium sized and one large sized.

If someone follows up on Stohp’s idea, and comes up with a branch or other lever that can squeeze into the opening, yet still provide leverage, the taurs could assist from behind the three in front.

DM needs to know the game plan, and then everyone involved needs to make some strength checks.

Micah stares at the stone block, his face blank as he evaluates how best to lift it.

"Once Stohp has her lever, I think we should give it a try," he says as he wrings his hands in anticipation.

When Stock is ready, the priest places his hand on the barbarian. A faint glow transfers from Micah's hands to the point of contact with the dwarf granting him additional strength. As they lift, Micah says a quick prayer. In response his muscles bulge against his armor.

He gives the door a mighty heave. As his enhanced muscles strain, he grunts out, In Domi's name!".

"I can add some to that lever, if we can find something that is solid," Bartomus said as he looked about. He had his glave, but he didn't want that to be broken in this effort. He whispered a set of phrases as he held the small leather pouch that hung about his neck as he reached into his side pouch and pulled out a few items that he crushed between his fingers. When he finished the last whisper, he felt a surge through him. He flexed his fingers and his tipped his head.

"Yep, I can help, Stohp what can we use for that lever?"

Spells are cast, and branches are gathered.

Sid arranges Micah, Stock, and Zanderallen in a row.

With Dorbin checking around for unwelcome visitors, the three heave.

The stone starts moving. It's really heavy, and the strain is showing on the three as they get the rock up a few inches.
But, by that time, Bartomus and Stohp can get their branches into the gap, and add both strength and sheer mass.

There is still a lot of grunting, and possibly some swearing, as the quintet wrestle the door higher and higher.

The room on the other side is a dark, long opening, with equally dark passageways leading to the right and left.

Sid and Dirk spot the mechanism for raising, lowering, and (most relevantly at this time) locking the door.

All someone has to do is squeeze past the five straining Shields, roll under the several hundred pound stone, scoot 10-15' into the dark room, and throw a switch.....

Stohp isn't actually straining much since she has no chance of lifting with her pitiful strength and is just letting her 800 lbs do the lifting via lever. "Dorbin should go, he'll fit more easily. Are you up to it Dorbin?"

Bartomus found his grip on the lever after his hand slipped. As the porticullis rose a bit higher and a bit higher, he had an idea when the group tried to figure out who could slip below. "Dorbin, if you don't want to do so, I think I have an idea how I might be able to do it. Maybe slightly windy, but it's a possibility."

In his mind, as a smile spread across his face, he remembered the battle at the Lizardfolk's - to fly again even for a short distance. His eyes sparkled.

Then he shrugs, quickly casts a spell, and as light appears, he dives and tries to roll under the massive stone to reach the lock.

"Some. Body. Better. Get. In. Now!", Zanderallen grunts more than speaks as the 5 shields hold up the stone door. He then focuses his whole might on holding the stone up while moving to allow whoever to roll under the stone.

Muscles bulge and breaths come in short, choppy bursts as Stock, Micah, and Zanderallen strain to keep the door up.

Bartomus and Stohp are also feeling the effects, although Stohp is basically just lying on lever and hoping her size does the trick.

At Zanderallen's urging, not one, not two, but three Shields dodge around the taurs and squeeze past the trio.
Well, Dorbin and Dirk squeeze past. Sid parkours himself over the front line, landing gracefully on his feet near the lever he'd previously identified as the locking mechanism.

Dorbin's LIGHT spell reveals an empty room devoid of undead monstrosities. The conjuror moves over to the lever, and finds Sid already standing there. But, the elf moves to the side an offers him the honor.

By now, the quintet, and especially the two humans really don't care who pulls the lever, as long as somebody does it.

Dorbin pulls the lever. There is a click. And the five gradually realize the stone gate has been locked open.

The chamber itself is open and apparently empty. Corridors, 10' wide and 10' high, run right and left.

Carefully relaxing his hold on the gate, Zander has a moment of panic as the door drops a fraction of an inch before catching in the locking mechanism. Quickly stepping through he looks around in the gloom and pulls Micah's mace from his belt. "I guess left unless somebody sees any reason to go a different way."

Bartomus ducked down under the stone porticullis and worked his way inside following the others. When he got into the building, he stood upright and looked about. He let his eyes adjust to the light that was there and used his glave as a walking stick as he looked about both of the corridors. "Yea, left sounds good to me."

When the door locks in place, Micah releases the breath he did not realize he was holding.

Flexing his fingers, he shakes out his arm while focusing his his arcane vision on Zanderallen's proposed left. He then slowly scans all the way around, sweeping the room before looking to their right.

The group enters the chamber, and looks down each corridor.
Like the chamber, the corridors are empty, dark, and silent.

Stock notes all the stone has settled. This place is old. Really old.

Micah looks about with his arcane sight. At the entryway of each, a panel of some kind is on the wall. They radiate moderate auras.

Dirk had, in fact, just discovered the one on the left corridor. There is no marking, just a four inch square of smoothness in the stone.

Meanwhile, Sid hasn't even started down the corridor yet, as he's noticed another pair of levers in the wall of the chamber opposite the door. They don't seem to be part of the gate mechanism.

They appear to do something mechanical, but he can't tell what.
The elf has not found any traps.

Meanwhile, the rest of the Shields are interested in the smooth panels at the beginning of the corridor.

Dirk does not see anything leading away from the panel.

Micah determines the school is of evocation.

Stohp suggest poking it with a stick.

Stock considers touching the smooth stone.

Bartomus asks about the builders, but so far none have made an appearance.

Stohp doesn't think there's much risk of them making the whole place fall on their heads. "Well presumably whoever built this place wouldn't have set up a bunch of traps to destroy it. I mean you don't make a crypt to preserve the bodies of your dead then set it up to collapse and crush the bones you meant to preserve. There might be traps but not "whole place collapses" types."

Stock taps the panel anyway.

As Dorbin cringes in anticipation, a soft, white light shines forth from the ceiling of the left corridor, illuminating the empty hallway all the way down to where it reaches the end of the building, and turns to the right.
Now, various open, but darkened, doorways can seen on either side of the corridor at various intervals.

Meanwhile, Sid is launching his own experimentation, and throws a switch.
Bartomus quietly awaits the doom about to befall them.

There is a grinding of gears. Several openings appear, evenly spaced, and high up in the outer wall of the chamber. Sunlight and fresh air, scented with the grass outside pour through the openings, lighting up the chamber and allowing a slight breeze to blow in and ventilate the room.

When the gears began their grinding and the noise echoed down the hallways, he held his breath and his hand held his glave tight in anticipation. Then sunlight and air poked into the hallways adding to the illumination that Stock had triggered. He looked about and stepped further down the hall looking up at the changes and at the first doorway near them. "Didn't expect that. Seems maybe someone really knew how to make things, think it's the same people who built the Float?"

Sid smiles at Zanderallen, "I wouldn't say that quite yet. Just remember to tell Ellie I love her. So there are stories of fantastic doorways into other realms. It's either that or the Garden. Let's see which!" Sid cautiously moves forward ready to bounce out of the way of anything he sees coming.

"They're be a few marbles out there so watch your feet!" he calls out. And as he's looking throws a few marbles down the passage way and through the closest open doors.

Having ascertain the purpose of the levers and panels, and catching the DMs incorrectly phrased reference, and adding one of their own, the Silver Shields set about exploring the rest of the ground floor.

Sid is extra cautious, but finds no traps or other unpleasant surprises.

Bartomus inspects the doorways, and the walls themselves, and comes to the conclusion that while the place is nicely built, it doesn't match the Float construction.
For one, Floating City contains a lot of a fantastic metal throughout the city. This building is stone, pure and simple.

Exploration continues.

The Shields spend some time looking about, and gradually arrive at the conclusion that the ground floor is empty.

But, nicely put together. Three and four room suites ring the perimeter. Rooms of varying sizes make up the interior. The perimeter rooms all have levers to open the 'windows', and every new room or corridor contains a flat panel for lighting.
The group also finds oaken doors in the doorways, all of them swung open. Experimenting with the door reveals they still swing freely, and contain a wooden deadbolt on the inside.

Bartomus and Dorbin will note the door are solid oak, and do not appear to have been worked by any tool.

Every room, corridor, chamber, and closet on the ground level is completely empty.
Nor is there any sign of any inhabitants.

At various places on the interior, stairways lead to the next level.

Bartomus looked at each of the halls and the construction still awed him. When they had walked about the various lower halls and rooms, they were looking at a stairwell. "Let's see what's up there. Though, any possibility there might be a lower area to something like this?"

He looked at the stairwell before following the others upwards.

Dorbin takes numerous notes about the layout of the floor. He follows in and out of doorways and walks back over different places, taking paces and taking notes. He observes the doors carefully and writes some more. He pushes levers back and forth and writes down notes about them. When the others mention going upstairs, he keeps taking notes and doesn't realize at first that everyone else is not standing there with him.

The group climbs the stairs to the second level, still suspicious, and ready for trouble.

However, they find the second level is much like the first - well laid out, with light panels and levers for the windows, open doors, and absolutely nothing else.

The group has been working their way for nearly an hour since the encounter with the guardian at the trees. Micah's Detect Magic, and any other short term spell effects have expired.

Stairs lead to the third level, and Sid leads the way up.

The first hint of trouble occurs at the top of the stairs, when Sid slaps the light panel, but nothing happens.

The stairway is situated in the southeast corner of the building.
Unlike the lower two floors, the corridor here appears to be circular.
Even those with darkvision cannot see further than 30', due to the curvature of the corridor.

And, for those without darkvision, it's really dark.

Bartomus climbed the stairs upwards to the second level and explored. He was again surprised by the way the builders had made the building responsive to who or what once occupied it with the levers and panels. Yet, they had found nothing of interest. When they decided to move upwards once again, he took another sip from his flask and follows Sid up the next flight of stairs.

It was dark. He could usually see within dimly lit places, but this was dark dark. He whispered, "I can light my glave Sid, but don't want to blind anyone who might be able to see in this, nor call attention to ourselves right off the start."

Sid sighs as his low-light vision fails him, "Alright Stock," He says placing his hand on the dwarf's shoulder, "low and slow and I'll tell you what to look for." Hearing Z and answering Bart he says, "Let us have a little looksee, a quick yell and you can light it just as quick, while if we have surprise we can't take it back." In Dwarvish Sid starts going down his mental checklist of things to lookout for, including, but not limited to: holes in any surface, slits, raised bits, sunken bits, reliefs, etchings. string, wire, cable, creases in the surfaces or in the air, odd smells, being unusually clean or dirty... it's a long list that he repeats as a mantra every ten feet.

It’s dark. How dark is it? It’s so dark, Dorbin is forced to stop scribbling notes for fear of writing over something he’s already written.

Zanderallen and Bartomus volunteer creating some light, but Sid and Stock don’t want to do that quite yet.

The dwarf takes the lead, the elf on his shoulder.

Everyone else is pretty much required to grab onto the person in front of them and shuffle forward blindly.

Stock shuffles forward as well, to keep from outpacing everyone else.
The dwarf keeps his head on a swivel, looking for anything out of the ordinary.

His task is easier due to there only being this one corridor. There are no branches, no doors, no openings, nothing but an empty corridor slowly bending to the left.

After what seems like an eternity, but is probably barely a minute, the dwarf notes a closed door coming up on his left. Reaching it, he stops, and everybody with him.

Only Stock and Micah can see anything but blackness.

Dirk can't see a thing as he waves his hand in front of his own face. Instinctively, he grabs the shoulder of the person in front of him, not even knowing by feel who this person may be. A dark thought crosses his mind momentarily of "What if this is some monster??" but he dismisses it just as quickly.

Suddenly, everyone stops their forward motion and Dirk immediately begins to recall a spell or two that he can quickly cast to help.

Several have light spells ready to go, and Stohp notes waiting until the last moment to cast one will cause more issues, but so far, no one has lit anything.

Stock carefully scans the images inlaid in gold on the door. And then checks the edges around the periphery of the two doors, looking for the telltale signs of a trap.

Stock turns and says, "OK, whatever is on the other side, we're in trouble if I'm the only one who can see. How about one of you pop a light spell now, and then we go in. Stohp's right..."

Once the group has adjusted to the light, Stock opens the door quietly...or at least tries to...

"Sure thing," Bartomus triggered the light spell by touching the tip of his glave as he closed his eyes. Even closed, he could see light, or thought he could from behind his eyelids and slowly opened his eyes letting them adjust to the change. When he could, he looked about the group in the hallway and at the door with its inlaid goldwork.

As Stock checks around the door, he grunts something foul in Dwarven. As light fills the corridor, he gestures at the ground and says to Sid, "Next time you do the scouting for traps...Ok. Here's the deal: Micah, Sid and I are standing on what may be a trap. Not sure what's happening here but I don't think we can open the door quiet yet. I'd ask the rest of you to back off down the hall...then Micah, maybe you try stepping off this plate we're standing on. If it is triggered by weight, hopefully you leaving doesn't change anything. Sid, do you see anyway to disable this?"

Micah blinks his eyes with the sudden light.

"I am not moving," says the priest calmly. "I will not risk setting this off until Sid has a chance to do his thing. I will add that the type of magic is evocation. If things go badly, this could hurt."

He feels his entire body tense in anticipation of the powers that may be released, but he is determined to not risk setting of the trap by attempting to get out of harm's way.

He stops the group when they are 30 feet away or out of line of effect around the curvature, whichever comes first.

Stock requests light, and Bartomus obliges, casting a light spell on his glaive.

Stock then tells everybody that he and Sid and Micah could be standing on a trap.
And Micah adds there is a moderate aura of evocation behind the door.

The situation abounds with possibilities, most ranging from bad to really bad.

At Stock's request, Dorbin, Bartomus, Zanderallen, Stohp, and Dirk back away from the trio on the trap.
Zanderallen asks Dorbin for more light on his shield.
Stohp also asks for more light, and suggests disabling the trap.

Meanwhile, Sid is trying to figure out just how much trouble they're in.

The elf has good news. The 10' section of flooring does not appear to be a pressure plate, meaning its not the trigger, meaning people should be able to walk onto and off of it without anything unpleasant happening.

The bad news is there definitely is a trap. The trigger appears to be the two door handles, composed of gold horizontal bars, one on each of the double doors. Messing with them in an unapproved combination will cause something to happen.

Given Stock's observation that the floor is some kind of platform, that something is likely to be bad.

As another interesting note - Both Sid and Stock are sure this trap is mechanical, not magical.

Zanderallen walks back up to the pit, uncoiling his rope from his pack. Before Sid starts fiddling with the door he ties it securely on around his middle with a length on each side. Tossing one end to Stock he takes the other end. "Stand across from me Stock, that way if Sid pulls the wrong handle we can hold him up. Might squeeze you a bit Sid but better than falling. And this will put Stock and I as the next closest to enter and cover you if something bad is inside." Taking his end Zanderallen readies to pull the rope tight if the floor opens underneath Sid.

Dirk casts a spell on Sid to aid him in his investigations.

Stohp moves over next to Sid to aid him as well.

Dorbin is thinking all this prep work may be overthinking it.

Sid looks the door handles over.
Definitely a trigger.
He'll have to disable it, if they want to get through this door.

Strange place. Some kind of a golem groundskeeper...some kind of ancient stone temple that appears abandoned without any sign that it was intended to be evil...and the only interesting thing on the inside is trapped. Hopefully whatever is on the other side of the door is evil.

Sid, with Stohp's assistance, figures out how to disable the trap, but takes a few extra moments to drag out the drama.

Stock, Micah, Bartomus, and Dirk wait for the boom.

Zanderallen tries to remain calm.

Dorbin pulls out his sketchbook.

At last, Sid completes his task, and with a triumphant flourish, opens the doors.

To the relief of all, nothing goes boom.

The doors open to a very large, very dark chamber. From Bartomus's position further down the hall, his lighted glaive only illuminates a small portion of the chamber, and no one can see anything there.

From the darkened room comes a rasping voice.
In an unknown tongue it barks a couple words in a commanding voice, followed by what sounds like an incantation.

In response to that voice, several somethings can be heard shuffling toward the group.

Bartomus heard the voice with its tones rasping like dry leaves rolling across stone. He stood, took a step and tried to see further down the hall towards the voice. When he started to hear something, or somethings, moving and their sounds grow louder, he began his own words that began to produce a growing ball of flame.

"Excellent work Sid. Could we get some light in here?" Hearing the voice he calls out,"Domi grant me power to smite these foes." Zanderallen steps right inside the door drawing Micah's mace as he does so. Raising it high he calls Domi's spirit to empower the weapon.
