Burton: waits outside as some of the rest of the team report in. The crow seems to have left, it is no longer visible in the area.

Fingers: ends up out in the street, and quickly locates the rest of the team.

Lothlo: looks forward to commissioning an item from sturdy wyvern leather.

Kwarsk: asks about the type of leather and waits for reply. Well it is from my usual sources, ahem, cow hide of course. My supplier has a method of stretching it so it is extra soft and easy to work with. Kwarsk suspects Ivan is not being entirely truthful.

Naithi: asks about the cost. Ah, I misunderstood. Well, I'm afraid I can't give out material which could be used for other work. But please come and see me when you have the funds, I'm sure we will be able to make whatever you need. Ivan then resumes measuring Camalayaas for the item to be crafted later

Paige: suggests checking in with the guards next, and estimates it is between 2 and 3 pm.

Rhys: Kerelis hurries off before she is missed, with a 'pleased to have met you' Rhys makes some suggestions for the next move.

Zarsellet: shows one of the tools to Ivan. DC15 perception(also applies to everyone else at Ivan's shop) to display: Highlight to display spoiler: {Ivan's eyes widen is surprise for the briefest of moments upon seeing the tool}

With most of the team outside in the street, the remaining interaction is at Ivan's shop. There are many people about, going in and out of the shops, and doing their usual business. You get a few looks, some in recognition, and a few that seem...concerned. But overall, very little acknowledgement of the well armed people standing in the middle of the street.

Zarsellet smiles, slightly, when he notices Ivan's response to seeing the tool. "Good..... So Brel was right. He said it was a high quality tool, but I don't work leather. Or skin.... creatures. With a high quality tool like this maybe I could learn?" His face goes grim and he continues, "But since you do recognize this, perhaps you could explain how you know the previous owner?"

OOC: Intimidate=17. He's much better at Diplomacy....

Naithi doesn't want to give up on the leather that might be evidence. She is torn between having him save it for her and having it turned into something that may obscure anything incriminating on it.

What I want is a truly unique creation that is nothing short of breathtaking. Made from the finest quality leather, it must flow around the wearer like liquid silk, the front catching the light in a mesmerizing dance of blues and silvers while the back it the embodiment of darkness...a girl must be able to dazzle at parties and also to disappear into the night when she caught the unwanted eyes of dishonorable men.

Upon closer inspection, one should see that the intricate design mimicks the scales of a blue dragon, with raised ridges and swirls that give it an otherworldly texture. The hood fashioned to frame the wearer's face to great effect.

But the true masterpiece lay in the folds, opening up into wings to that I may someday turn it into wings of flying. They should unfolded with a quiet rustle, revealing themselves to be thin membranes stretched taut between delicate finger-like bones. The upper surface of each wing a rich navy blue, speckled with silver and iridescent markings that glinted in the light. The lower half, however, are to be a deep oceanic shade that seemed to swallow the light whole.

It should be a truly stunning work of craftsmanship, the cloak was both functional and beautiful - a testament to the ingenuity of those who created it. Naithi couldn't help but imagine herself soaring above the trees, her hair streaming behind her like a golden comet.

That's what I want it's main form to be.
Naithi begins sketching on some paper.

I would like some intricate stitching that allowed for such flexibility. Each seam should hold a hidden pocket or secret compartment, perfect for storing trinkets and tools. The hood should be detachable, snapping off with ease to reveal the cloak's true potential - a chameleon-like surface that adjusted to match whatever style is wore beneath it.

To alter the style, one should simply needed to pull on specific tabs or tug at certain sections of the garment. One pull turned the cape into a hooded cloak, the cowl billowing behind her as she moved. Another twist transformed it into a short jacket, while yet another caused the cloak to expand into a regal robe with long flowing sleeves.

Please make this from a durable and light weight leather, but not that really nice leather. Please save it for me. I'll pay a deposit for the leather, and if the cloak meets my satisfaction I'll have you make a higher quality one with that.

ooc: Yeah, my imagination went a little crazy. Although not magical, I expect this will cost a lot more than a traditional mundane cloak, hopefully convince him to save the other leather for me. I'm not expecting any special bonuses from it, just to have fun changing my cloaks appearance at will.

Wow Naithi, that's sounds pretty cool, I can't imagine the amount of skill it would take to craft such a thing.

Ivan, I am curious what you know about those tools as well. Would you be so kind as to share what you know about them and their prior owners?

Kwarsk looks down at the scabbard, and then back up, and says, "Well then, not the workman's grade of leather I'm looking for." Kwarsk turns and puts the scabbard back precisely where he picked it up from.

He then smiles, waves, and leaves silently.

Kwarsk works fast to locate the rest of the Patchers, hopefully before they've gone anywhere.

Kwarsk will tell each of them, in person, in a low voice, that he can reach that Ivan's shop is involved in this somehow, perhaps buying leather based on human skin from the murders the Patchers have been investigating. Kwarsk suggests they find a safe place nearby to further strategize.

(OOC - If I recall correctly, we're some distance from the Patch, so have to scrounge a table at an eatery or something.

Ivan agrees it is a high quality tool. But otherwise it is standard for leatherwork. I have no idea why you would want to use it for such purpose, but I guess that is your business. As to the owner, well it bears no markings, and all of my own tools have my brand.

With that, Ivan returns his attention to the customer who seems interested in spending some money. He takes notes, and looks at Naithi's drawing. It sounds like a wonderful challenge, and I accept! Hmm, I don't think I can put a firm price on such a garment until I see how much labor will be needed, but I am confident we can make it. How does a 50 gold deposit sound?

Burton agrees with checking in with the guards.

Ivan already explained the tools seem to be standard types for leatherwork, except they are of high quality. He has nothing further to add to Lothlo's query.

Kwarsk attempts to gather the team so everyone can compare notes while having a quick bite to eat. He also believes Ivan's shop is involved in the murders.

{Most} of the team gathers at a small eatery nearby, within sight of Ivan's place. Between bites of excellent sandwiches, it is time to decide what to do next.

Naithi digs deep into her pouch and produces 200 gold coins and places them on the counter. "This is for the deposit she the cloak and to hold that fine piece of leather offer there for me, the collar for Camalayaas, and a new case for my travel harp. Something sturdy and lightweight, preferably with some room for extra strings and tuning tools. If the labor comes to more, let me know. Naithi also leaves him with her harp and a few empty potion vials, knowing from personal experience that they will be needed to mold and shape the leather around the objects for a perfect fit.

When the transaction and negotiations are complete Naithi remind the others and will share with them what she learned. Some of that leather is...unusual. I can't tell what it came from. However, I've done enough leather working to know it is now from a common source. The weight, sturdiness, texture and suppleness are different for every creature. However this is not one I can identify. He wouldn't sell the unsweetened leather to me, so I ordered some custom items and put a deposit on the one I couldn't identify to be worked after I see how the other items turn out. Hopefully that will be enough to preserve any evidence. If not, I'll have a nice addition to my wardrobe.

ooc: For those wondering, Naithi previously made a check that revealed "The leather is very good quality and unusual; so unusual, in fact, that you think it is possible that it has come from an unusual source – possibly even a person!"

Naithi is fine spending 200+gp to preserve possible evidence from the beastfolk murders. She is also fine spending it on some unusual or exotic leather even if it is not evidence and not evidence / made from a person.

I’m afraid I may have pushed a little hard, but one of the workers their came to see us privately and spoke well of her and told us she has been tormented by Ivan and likely thought we were under his employ.”

Once all (that Kwarsk could convince to join him) are there, Kwarsk shares his interpretation of deducing the same as Naithi: good chance the leather might have come from a person, or at least a creature where the leather would be unsavory or even illegal. He suggests determining a way to keep an eye on Ivan, find out who his suppliers are. He concludes, "Perhaps some of us are stealthy enough to track his movements each night after his shop closes, and others could keep an eye out during the day for any unusual visitors to his shop?Other ideas on following up on this lead?"

Burt, stop that! Please tell me you're joking. We're not burning anything.

Kwarsk gives me an idea though. While you're all following Ivan around at night, his shop must be...unattended, correct? Maybe a discreet look through the premises would teach us something.

Oh, and Naithi, I hate to second-guess you, but I would have also ordered something small made from that leather, like a wristband. It wouldn't have taken much time -- maybe they had some scraps there they could use. I'm guessing we could get as much information from that as from a larger piece.

Say, Zar, what is that drink? It looks good.

Burton: Offers suggestions as to the way ahead.
Fingers: Offers his own advice – perhaps some ‘unofficial’ scrutiny?
Lothlo: Is impressed with Naithi’s ideas and asks Lothlo further about the tools – they aren’t his as they do not carry his mark.
Kwarsk: Offers ideas that might help secure further evidence.
Naithi:. Clarifies her actions – seeking to preserve evidence.
Paige: Decides to report to the guards.
Rhys: Explains about Zenya’s innocence.
Zarsellet: Believes Ivan to be involved – somehow – in the murders.

The food is good, albeit the enjoyment is somewhat impaired by the odour of the leatherworks. Whilst the cured leather good have a pleasant aroma, the stench of the tanning works definitely undermines it. The pale ale is particularly good though and very reasonably priced. Apparently it is favoured by the workers hereabouts.

With everyone gathered and with no one close enough to overhear their conversation, a consensus on the way ahead is sought.

- Is there sufficient evidence to warrant calling in the guard? (A Guard that is currently stretched rather thin)

- Should they confront him directly and challenge him? Perhaps even arrest him for questioning by the guard?

- Should they play a longer, waiting game to try to determine who is is involved? Would such a delay put others at risk?

- Are there other options yet to be explored?

I felt that if I didn't focus fully on my order he might realize I was suspicions of him. I'm not good at questioning people, but I'm good at compartmentalizing things and just being me.

Naithi, I take it that Camalayaas wasn't able to confirm your suspicions? I'm not sure there is much we can bring to a guard at this point. Everything I found is just a hunch at this point with nothing to back it up. And if my hunch is correct, it could easily explained by him as he didn't know or was tricked. It may be worth reporting so that they have a record if killings start again, but with the guards stretched thin I'm thinking we need to to have more evidence if before they can prioritize a real investigation into this.

With matters barely organised and plans hardly shaped, Rhys and Paige get up to leave. It will take some time to get to the Guardhouse, speak with the custodial officer and then return.

The weather promises to co-operate though. Thin, wispy clouds do little to diminish the brightness of the day. There’s no hint of rain and the wind removes the worst of the tanneries’ smell.

No one ushers the group out, but more food and drink is available if they want it.

Ivan’s seems quiet – insomuch as there are no customers coming and going. It would seem that Ivan’s prices deter all but the wealthiest. Conversely, Zenya’s has a slow, but steady trickle of workers popping in and out.

- What will everyone do?
-There is, as yet, no plan…..other than the hope that Paige and Rhys glean some useful information.

Paige makes sure Burton knows he’s welcome to be a part of the team going to the gaol to make a report and ask some questions.

The half-elf follows Riverside Road from the Guild Quarter past the Trade Quarter and through the Rogues Quarter where it links up with Skull Street into Nightmare Quarter. Her goal is the gaol where Guardsman Bersei brought the orphan Musetta when the elf-child was caught with some stolen merch. Hopefully Captain Garrick is around, too.

Once at the gaol, the cleric will confirm with whoever is in charge that The Patchers had handed over two nasty characters (an injured choker, and a dead skin stitcher) to a team of six guards the night before. The ‘creatures’ had been terrorizing folks in the Outcast Quarter and seem to have some ties to the tanneries or leather working shops in the Guild Quarter. The party is checking things out there (understanding how very busy the guards have been recently - what with the redeployment of so many in service to the dwarf Duncan.) She’ll ask if the guards’ questioning of the choker was successful, and if information could be shared with The Patchers to further their investigation.

Perception roll for time spent walking through the streets = 14
Diplomacy roll for the contact at the gaol = 15

Zarsellet considers Muuru's question. "My bardic music can be used for a fascination effect. It could distract guards while others were doing something that we don't want them to see. I could try to 'distract' two guards. The magic isn't strong enough for more, and of course then they'd obviously 'see' me." He pauses for a moment. "It wouldn't work against unintelligent things, dogs or such. Or I could try a hypnotism spell. That could work against dogs.... I'd still need an excuse for guards if there are any. Maybe I could just ask if they know when Ivan comes in tomorrow?"

"Paige could cast a silence spell on the group going in. Just in case someone scuffs a shoe or something."

Well, if Ivan knows that the creature was caught and that the tools were recovered then if he is behind this he'll likely either be trying to find a new supplier or trying to remove any evidence tying the operation to him. After how he looked at the tools I wouldn't be surprised if he immediately gets rid of anything incriminating... what do you think the odds are that this would includes making sure the creatures don't have anything in their base of operations that would lead back to him? That is to say, do you think if we keep an eye on him that he'll lead us to where the creatures were hiding out?

Watching Ivan's shop isn't a way to catch the murderers, it's to find the little fish, the thugs, the negotiators, that may lead us to the next boss, and the next one, until we find out who the big boss is.

...you know, I bet I can probably hit him from here. Anyone want to take a closer look at this bird that's been stalking us?

Rhys looks upward and spots the group of crows, including the larger one in the distance. ”I wouldn’t annoy them. I was always told they can recognize individual people and remember those who did them foul. I had a childhood friend who befriended a crow and for years it would bring him small gifts…a shiny pebble, an acorn…stuff”

Zarsellet looks up, way up, at Muuru and puts his saddest expression on his face.... "Seriously Muuru? You know I'm pretty good at not being noticed! And how are we going to help you if you need something?...."

Then he grins and tips up his glass, letting the last drop drain. "Just kidding. But before you go let me cast a Heroism spell on you. It lasts probably longer than you will need it and helps you with any skills, and if you do get noticed and have to fight something."

OOC: Before Fingers goes in, Heroism. Duration 50 minutes. +2 morale bonus on attack rolls, saves, and skill checks.

"But I WILL be out front listening, just in case. If there's any guards I might just offer some entertainment to them. A private concert from a starving street artist. You know we have to practice somewhere, just about anywhere, until we become famous!!!"

Kwarsk listens to what the server told Fingers when he asked, how late do you stay open?, and if it's late enough then Kwarsk will, out of earshot of anyone but Patchers, say, "Hmmm... I think they're open late enough that we could leave for a bit, then split up with Fingers heading for the shop and I return here for a drink. Yell loud enough, or blow a signal whistle, and I'll come to the rescue! Perhaps I, Lothlo, and Naithi could be the cavalry for this?"

”I think it’s called a ‘murder of crows’” Paige says as she points out the group of black birds. ”That one, the big one, sure looks weird. It kind of looks like it’s watching - but I don’t see any eyes!” The cleric reflects on what she might have heard or read about such things, as she continues to hustle through the streets.

NB.
The group is split. The crow was only seen by Rhys, Paige and Burton.

At the tavern plans are put in place, but with many of Ivan’s workers now filling the seats talking discreetly is problematic, not that anyone seems to be listening. The workers are in good spirits, delighted at their unexpectedly short working day and with evidently no less of pay!

~~~
Paige leads the way and eventually they arrive at the gaol, long having left the scrutiny of any strange birds. Paige wracks her brain for what the particularly large crow – possibly a raven – might be. Her thoughts lead her down a disturbing path: it is undead! Of course, she couldn’t be certain, but it was a logical explanation. If it was an undead familiar to an undead mage, then surely that was news. Such thoughts though were banished upon arrival at the gaol. Much waiting ensued. There were evidently very few guards. At last they were admitted to the reception area and found themselves facing an imposing raised desk. Behind this was a surprisingly young man of swarthy complexion: a handsome man with long, black, curly hair. That hair was so lustrous and well maintained it seemed almost a wig.
“Ah, I recognise you!” He beamed in delight. “The fair Paige! It is a singular honour.” Such was the construction of the ‘desk’ that all had to look up to the man. It was almost as if they were in court looking up at the judge: in this case a very friendly judge. After Paige had explained the full reason for the visit, the man stared admiringly at her for a few uncomfortable moments before again gracing her with a cheeky smile.
”I cannot permit you to speak with the creature. I simply do not have the staff for that. No, I am not saying that you cannot handle yourselves, but this creature – it is clearly insane and should you kill it – how will I explain that? BUT! Fair Paige, how could I ever live with myself were I to see disappointment in those beautiful eyes? No, no! I could not. So, I will gladly impart that which we have learnt.”
“This thing is extremely dangerous. It and its accomplice are/were the killers responsible for all the deaths. You have done the city a great service, although I suspect that only the beastfolk will be truly grateful.”
“Now, WHY! Why you ask and to what end? Good questions, good questions, Fair Paige and would that I had all the answers. Yet this I can report. The creature was supplying a shop called Ivan’s Classy?….crafty.?. Clever?...Cuts. Whatever. That is whence all skin was taken. So, I think arresting this ‘Ivan’ is called for. Sadly, I have to remain here or I would be there in a trice! Hmm…..Mayhap one of your great wisdom could effect that arrest, Fair Paige. I can provide a Guard’s seal to make it official. Not that I would wish you to endanger even a hair on that beautiful head! Heavens forbid! Fear not, I am sure that pressures will ease soon and that some guards will be found to bring this villain to justice.”
He leaned back but did not take his rich, dark eyes off Paige’s face. The other two were forgotten.
Wednesday's Perception check: Take 10 = 22
Hey! Hey! Fingers whispers urgently to the table. Ivan's kicked everyone out of the shop. Lothlo was right - he's getting rid of evidence. No time left for subtlety.
And with that, the minotaur grabs his gear and heads for the door.
Rhys almost blushes at the embarrassment Paige must be feeling at this buffoons overt flirting. He can only wonder if the half-elf cleric will play along to get what she wants, or simply destroy the guard’s very soul with her icy glare. Either way this promises to be awkward…unless this is but a ruse, for Rhys does not remember meeting this guard before (Sense Motive 11)
Burton steps slightly forward, gets the guards attention and says; "Yes, we can make the arrest, do we need to be deputies or anything if not the guard seal will be fine. As for the hair on Paige's head that will be the least of Ivan's worries. I assume you want Ivan mostly in one piece? However, if he resists too much we can't guarantee he will stay that way."
Lothlo glances around to make sure Ivan isn't there.
Yeah, it's definitely possible he's destroying any evidence. Still, let's try not to be too reckless, we don't want to have all Ivan's workers chasing after us... or the city guards.
Paige’s eyes open wide when she spots the popinjay sitting behind the tall desk. They bug out when he addresses her using the most flowery prose the cleric has ever heard. She looks at her companions, then back at the loquacious fellow, while Burton speaks.
”Yes! The Guard’s Seal, please. NOW! Um…time is of the essence…my fine fellow!” The half-elf responds, trying to match the man’s speech. Paige flushes bright pink to the roots of her hair as she steps forward her hand outstretched to receive the seal - and flutters her lashes, before looking down demurely. (Diplomacy = 25)
Her companions better not say anything…not-one-word…
As Fingers idly thinks that he'll have to teach Expeditious Retreat to the bard, he runs to the front door of the shop. When he reaches it, he's about to bang on the door, but alerting Ivan might cause him to hurry up whatever he's doing.
Instead, he examines the door lock. (Perception: 14, +2 for traps)
