Devastation, an unwelcome visitor, and tussle for the Ring

DM Kent
Monday July 17th, 2000 11:35:48 AM

As those in town collect bodies or shun them as the tongue tells you, you come across nothing alive in the town. Only about a quarter of the bodies seem to have died from wounds.

Those still at the ceremony grounds finish body collecting and are sitting around waiting for the others to return.

At the appointed time the townies head back to the sentinel field with their first round of bodies.

Bill Troublefinder
Monday July 17th, 2000 6:13:15 PM

After helping to bring several bodies into the Ceremonial Grounds, Bill sits down on the platform. He sees the bodies laid near the Sentinel Statue of his cousin, Borbo Pastna, of Galahad and Brother Branze Bones. Bill looks up at his friends, and in a small voice says, "I just hope that some of the people fled the town before all this ... happened." With welling tears, the halfling looks at Sedar, and asks, "Why did this happen?" He puts his face in his hands, and begins to sob.

Draax
Monday July 17th, 2000 8:27:42 PM

Draax has no answer to Bill's question. He just keeps himself walking around the head with he sword ready. He does not looks at the collection of bodies and does not speak to anyone know that if he did he would probably begin to cry along with Bill.

Sedar of the dimmed Spirit

Demoralized by the dark scences that he walks through, the Mage makes his way back to the Sentinel field. "its everwhere in town, death everywhere. "

K'isst
Tuesday July 18th, 2000 1:16:04 AM

Awakening as if from a dream K'isst decides it's time to act. "There's nothing we can do here. We must get people to do the ceremony, right? So we should go to the next town. Bree, or Closefuddle perhaps."

Rond
Tuesday July 18th, 2000 9:37:35 AM

"Do we actually have time to goto the other villages? Do we remember enough of the ceremony, to it oursleves? how many peole do we need to complete it?

Arien
Tuesday July 18th, 2000 3:37:21 PM

Since he does not know the ceremony Arien keeps quiet and listens to the discussion, while keeping his gaze off of the bodies.

Arrisa
Tuesday July 18th, 2000 6:20:21 PM

Arrisa too doesn't know the ceremony. She simply stays quiet and watches for any movements other than the groups...

DM Kent
Tuesday July 18th, 2000 6:20:22 PM

As the party decides what they are going to do and wander around the sentinel fields, they hear the sound of whistling coming from the path that comes from town. Those that were in town though could swear there was nothing alive let alone whistling in that ghost of a town.

Bill Troublefinder
Tuesday July 18th, 2000 7:29:07 PM

Bill, after a few minutes, dries his eyes. "Look, let's hide the Head. There are a few buildings still standing. And I will stay with it. I need to rejuvenate for four hours. Yes, K'isst, go with our friends to the next town. I'll stay with the Head." He looks pretty shaky.

Then, when the whistling is heard, he looks up, cocks his ear. "Eh?" Bill hops down from his perch. Worry spreads over his face.

He goes to the Head, and climbs as he is able. "Oh, Sentinel, oh Sentinel, what are we to do? What are we to do? Oh good gods of Wold, what are we to do? Give us wisdom. Help us!"

Bill rests his head atop the Head, and as he asks for wisdom to come, hope replaces the worry on his face. He cracks open one of his eyes to see who or what may be coming down the path.

Sedar
Tuesday July 18th, 2000 7:29:08 PM

"I think we should not waste much more time ... we should be able to finish the ceremony." the turns distracted by the whistling. How could we have missed someone he murmurs.

K'isst
Tuesday July 18th, 2000 9:07:49 PM

"We are not a village. It would drain our lives away and still not be enough. It takes a village as they say. What?" K'isst stops her speculating as the whistling is heard. Her hair stands on end at the gall and moxie it would take to whistle in a locale like this. Without thinking she draws her trident and begins to sniff out the traveller.

Draax
Tuesday July 18th, 2000 9:40:45 PM

Draax continues walking around the head with his sword ready as if he was guarding it until he hears the whistling. Draax tries to locate the direction of the sound and will begin to moves slowly in that direction, scanning for any movement as he goes.

Rond
Wednesday July 19th, 2000 12:08:53 AM

"Yea, but, it only takes one to make a stand..." as he stops and hears the whistling.

Ahkum
Wednesday July 19th, 2000 1:33:14 PM

Ahkum grabs the shield like holy symbol about his neck bearing three distinct symbols and looks to the path with a grim look on his smooth pale face. He takes a few steps towards the path and speaks in a loud commanding voice, "Who goes there?"

Arien  d20=15 d20=4

When he hears the noise Arien scales the nearest large object, be it a rock or tree, that affords some cover and looks for the source of the whistling. (dex check, then perception check, made both)

DM Kent
Wednesday July 19th, 2000 6:49:48 PM

Not trying to hide himself at all, the whistling individual crosses the bridge to the sentinel fields and is heading toward the ceremony ampitheatre, where the head and you are currently holed up.

Those of the party who are trying to see who is approaching, see a very tall, gaunt, human with grayish skin. He is wearing black-robes with a blood-red sash. He is carrying a black, crooked staff and is walking with a spry, bouncing step.

Bill Troublefinder
Wednesday July 19th, 2000 8:27:17 PM

Bill, still lying on the head, shifts just enough to pulls out two of his normal darts, and two of the new darts taken from under Atomos' pedestal. New one in his right, and normal in his left, the pair remaining lie under him, ready to reach. He closes his eye for a moment, then again just barely opens it, watching the gray walker. Black, red, gray? He looks to see the color of hair.

Draax
Wednesday July 19th, 2000 8:31:32 PM

Seeing a living person after all the death, Draax is very excited. He does not know why the man is walking among the dead with such a bounce in his step, but he thinks that maybe the man could be affected mentally by whatever happened here. Draax slowly approaches the man with his sword pointed to the ground. "Excuse me sir, are you alright and is there anyone else still alive?"

Sedar
Wednesday July 19th, 2000 8:31:33 PM

Surprised at the appearance of the old man. The mage simply waits, allowing the old fellow to approach.

Ahkum
Wednesday July 19th, 2000 11:13:51 PM

The priest raises an eyebrow at the bouncing grey skinned man and rests his quarterstaff before him in the sand of the sentinel beach. He looks the man up and down and speaks openly, "Hail,... Alemi hath shown you a gentle hand this day. The village hath suffered a plague and we were wrought with sorrow until we looked upon your visage of life. That reminds me stranger. Speak your name and your buisness here in this once peaceful place. Our day hath been long and I fear the appearance of new developments myself."

Rond
Thursday July 20th, 2000 2:48:10 AM

Rond stops all activity and watches intently as the stranger approaches.

Arien
Thursday July 20th, 2000 5:10:53 AM

Hiding his movements as best he can, and staying up on his perch, Arien draws an arrow and makes it ready. He moves slowly so as to not attract attention.

DM Kent
Thursday July 20th, 2000 4:08:10 PM

Looking at Draxx and Ahkum as they address him as he approaches, the man smiles and walks right by them. He is by far one of the tallest men you have ever seen. Up close his skin color is almost ashen and Ahkum is not sure but as the man passed by, was that a whiff of carrion? The only other thing a bit unusual about the man are his 4 inch long pitch-black fingernails.

As he approaches the head he looks up at it, smiles and slowly turns back to face the visible party members, slowly looking over each member as if searching for something. "So Ahkum Ellison and Andraaxius Slowblade, you want answers do you? What do you think gives you the right to ask the questions that you want? Let alone deal with the answers to them.

"As for seeing anyone else left alive, No. There are none from Windhorn still left alive. Or so I thought. I don't understand how you all managed to survive when the others did not."

As his eyes come to rest upon Arissa and move down to her hand, a smile plays upon his face and he looks back up at the others. "So what do you all here and where ever did you find the sentinel head?"

K'isst  d20=5
Thursday July 20th, 2000 5:46:57 PM

"You first. Who are you and how are you still alive?" K'isst's acute nose smells the carrion aspect easily (perception check of 5.) Her hands are gripped tightly on her trident and she has it in an offensive position. She glances quickly at Bill apprehensively and then at each party member in turn to see how they are reacting to him.

Bill observes the newcomer, and notes his interest in Arrisa and the ring she wears. Bill switches the darts, so that he holds a new one in each hand. He stands upon the Sentinel.

"Gather round the Sentinel, friends," Bill pipes up. "Let us make sure that our guest is appropriately met." He adds, soto voce, "Arrisa, come by here."

Then he addresses the tall man. "You are most unwelcome in this place. Who are you -- Gargul's Emissary? You mock at the deaths of our friends and neighbors. Our right to ask? You are the trespasser here, not we. And you initiated rudeness. Our right to ask? We love our town.

"You may not touch what we have. You must leave now. We will resist your will, and do despise your ways. Covet not.

"Go. Now."

If he sees the ashen one so much as flinch, Bill will launch his darts (4), called shots all, aiming for his right eye, and if successful, next for his staff hand. He resists attempts at mental probing. [Will email DM w/attack adjustments - don't have sheet here.]

Draax  d20=4
Thursday July 20th, 2000 10:31:40 PM

Draax is stunned by the fact that this stranger knows his true name. As he listens to Bill he comes to understand what the man represents. He moves closer to the sentinel staying well out of reach of the stranger while holding his sword ready.

Ahkum

Keeping his eye on the large stranger Arien pulls another arrow out of the quiver and lays it next to him, where he can grab it easily.

Arrisa spins her quarterstaff and ends with it held firmly in both hands. She moves towards Bill and growls at this newcomer slightly

DM Kent
Friday July 21st, 2000 9:21:38 PM

The gray man turns at K'isst's comments. "Who am I? Who am I? I am called Marteus, though I doubt any of you have heard of me by that name. Perhaps you might have heard of me as the Dark Lord." Turning sharply at Bill's comments, he angrily says, "Gargul's emissary indeed. Why Gargul is naught but a washed up has been do gooder." Turning and pointing toward Arissa, he says, "Now I want that ring. And since I am in a good mood I am willing to trade you something that you all dearly want for it. I would think very hard about trying to keep the ring from me I make this offer only once."

Arrisa
Saturday July 22nd, 2000 5:11:44 AM

Arrisa looks at the ring on her finger and then looks to this stranger. "The ring can't be that important to you, all it does is let you breathe water..."

Drawing the arrow taunt Arien waits to see what unfolds below him.

Bill Troublefinder  d20=7
Sunday July 23rd, 2000 4:40:21 AM

Bill lies down on his stomach on top of the Sentinel. "Arrisa, let me see the ring. You put on Galahad's ring, right? Don't worry, I won't swallow it now, I just want to verify the ring we're talking about." He reaches down his hand, and hopes that she will hold it up for him to take.

Assuming she gives it to him, Bill looks at it closely for a moment. He then asks Marteus, "What did you want to trade for it?"

If Marteus goes for a grab play during the handoff, Bill and the Ring disappear. [See email.]

If not, Bill will appear interested in hearing what the Dark Lord has to say, yet suspicious at the same time. Someone trying to read his face would think he was dealing with inner conflicts.

Ahkum
Sunday July 23rd, 2000 8:41:27 AM

The priest continues to eye the 'man' with contempt as the dealings with Bill are going on. He stands leaning on his staff totally confused by the turn of events.

K'isst
Sunday July 23rd, 2000 2:09:06 PM

K'isst silently begins to pray to Donyra. "Goddess of the deep. Give me the strength to die for what I believe in. Give me the wisdom to help us make the correct decisions here." She opens her eyes, but is not calmed. She wonders why Bill is on the head, but focuses on The Dark Lord and wonders why he tries to parley it from us. Suddenly she hits upon an idea. "Do not attack him first. I think that's important somehow. Also do not let him have the ring. Resist... Resist..." She stands tall. "Ok, you "dark one" you....what is this so called deal." ::keep him talking K'isst....make him reveal what he wants....evil guys always want to justify their actions.....make him justify his...:: K'isst's thought run rampant.

DM Kent
Sunday July 23rd, 2000 10:36:44 PM

Turning towards Arissa and Bill, Marteus smiles and says, It is not what I want to trade for it but what you want to trade for it, young Troublefinder.
As your companion, Arissa Fairwind, so succinctly says, it is just a simple ring of little value. A bauble so to speak. But it is unique in its plainness and that intrigues me. I only offer a trade with you to make you feel like you got some value for something I could easily take, should I wish.
As for any thoughts, any of you might have, of taking the ring and... hiding it. I believe I am more than capable of following you to where ever you go. And I can assure you that you would not like the consequences of such actions.
Now then, I believe you were all just bemoaning the fact that all of your families and friends in this burnt hovel are dead and that you would like then to live again. Well, I can make that happen, after a sense. All you have to do is say the word and give me the ring. So, What say you?

Ahkum
Monday July 24th, 2000 1:45:22 PM

The priest narrows his eyes at marteus and then to looks to his comrades, "You must have a dark heart if you have to ask for payment to renew life to hundreds of helpless villagers. If you have the power to renew their lives then you may have very well been the cause of this plague mighty marteus." He looks to Arissa and then the ring with disdain, "Is that the ring that Galahad wore or the ring of the glowing sahuagin that nearly killed bill?"

Arrisa
Monday July 24th, 2000 2:39:30 PM

Arrisa holds the ring up for Bill to take, and is slightly releived as he does so. She turns back to this Marteus and simply watches him. He could probably read her mind, so all she thought was: 'And did you get my wilderness family too?'

K'isst
Monday July 24th, 2000 8:35:55 PM

K'isst, growls at Marteaus and then gets an idea. She winks at Bill and then says, "Bill, let's head into town and see this devastation again first hand as a group. Then we can talk it over and decide." She turns to Marteaus, "I assume that there's no huge hurry here? I mean they are all dead and you are a great power, right? This ring must be of great importance to you for you to be willing to do such a noble act as raise all these poor folk from the grave. Perhaps there is some good in you, hmm? So. we're walking.....we're walking."

Bill (by Jerry)
Monday July 24th, 2000 8:43:17 PM

Bill, seemingly about to do something drops his mouth open as Marteaus speaks for a second, and then doubles his mind defenses. He pauses wondering what K'isst is up to. He nods at K'isst tentatively and looks to see what the others in the party think by looking at their faces.

Draax
Monday July 24th, 2000 9:04:48 PM

Draax listens to the others while keeping his eyes on the stranger. The fact that the man says that he can bring the people back to life does not make him happy. He nods to K'isst and looks back at the stranger, says out loud, but as if to himself. " I wonder what he means by 'I can make that happen, after a sense' what does after-a-sense means.

Sedar
Monday July 24th, 2000 9:04:49 PM

"If you could just take it. you most likely would of already." pause for a moment before adding "wants holding him back I wonder." reaching into his sachel he fingers the 3 rings he has stored there. Then randomly slips two of them on.'wonder what they can do to help us'

Arien
Tuesday July 25th, 2000 1:11:42 AM

One particular part of Marteaus' speech stuck in Arien's mind. The stranger claimed he coud give them life, in a sense. "Perhaps," he thought to himself, "Its not life he will grant them but unlife..." Arien lithely scurries down from his perch and joins his companions. Once out of earshot of the stranger he will tell them his thought.

DM Kent
Tuesday July 25th, 2000 7:01:12 AM

Turning to Ahkum and Arissa, Mister Ellison, I have to admit that as sad as it seems, and as much as it seems you would like to think it, I had nothing to do with the Citizens of Windhorn's demise. That was of written long ago in regards to the loss of the Sentinel head. And for your information it is not the first time this has occurred. Perhaps it will be the last, who knows?

Turning back to K'sst and Bill.

As for whether we have a lot of time or not, well I will let you think about that all the Citizens of Windhorn have died within two days due to the loss of protection gained from the Sentinel Statue and the ceremony. You all were obviously not here during that time so perhaps the magic involved will not affect you. However You are Windhorn Hamlett Citizens and it is written that ALL the citizens of the hamlett will perish at the loss of the Sentinel Head. So perhaps we have two days, or prhaps you have much less time since the magic will not have as many life forces to deal with.

At Draxx's mumbled comment he turns and says now there's a bright lad and though, looking at Arien as he has his thoughts, yes I could give them a partial life by just animating them I did say I would return them to life in a sense.

Rond

Rond maintains his position and his focus, not knowing what else to do for now.

Bill Troublefinder
Tuesday July 25th, 2000 11:27:03 AM

When Arrisa gave him the ring, Bill thanked her with his eyes. He holds the ring in his closed right hand.

At K'isst's suggestion, he looks to her and his friends. "How quickly could we gather others from nearby towns?"

And, mentally, and from his spirit, Bill shoots a prayer heavenward to Alemi and Domi, and to the Sisters, asking their active attention and protection. 'Let Marteus hear that,' he thinks defiantly. He is pleased with his friends that they seem inclined to resist.

"I am relieved to hear you are not the one responsible for this ..." and his voice trails off as he looks at the dead upon the Ceremony Grounds.

As Marteus names his friends, he memorizes the names, as some he had not heard in full.

"Within two days of the loss of the Head, or within the last two days?" Bill asks regarding the time when the villagers died. "In what book or scroll were these prophecies written? And what magic or curse is it that caused their deaths? Did it lie here before the placing of the Sentinel Head?"

Bill waits for a moment for Marteus to answer, if he chooses to answer, then says, "We have no interest in having the remains of the members of our community turned into the abomination of the undead. We will miss them, and we will mourn them, and if we can, we will bury them. But we will not ask you to defile them."

Bill stands atop the Head, his left hand covering his right fist over his belly. The feathers of a dart stick up, nestled between thumb and forefinger of his left hand.

He takes a breath, and asks, "I will ask you something, Marteus. And give you time to answer, once our group has done as my friend K'isst has suggested.

"What just and honest claim do you have for this Ring of the Water, other than dark desire? How will you benefit the Wold if this ring you bear? Might there not be hands better suited than yours to wear it? May the righteous gods and the Sentinel then be witness to your answer."

Bill then scrambles down from the Sentinel, and joins his friends to head toward town. "I will be back."

K'isst
Tuesday July 25th, 2000 7:21:10 PM

K'isst leads the group back to town where they tour the town to see what caused the destruction. Dragons? Sahuagin? This Marteaus? She leads them down the streets one by one. "This is so we never forget what happened here. Also it is so we can see first hand the importance of our decisions here." As they pass a building on the eastern edge of town she says, "Bill! Did I see something move over there? Quick! Over there by that pile of rubble! Something's moving. Maybe we can save at least one life in this horrible place!!!" K'isst draws her trident just in case and runs toward the movement she thinks she saw. "Come!"

Draax does not react to the little praise bestowed upon him by the stranger for his comment. He just nods himself. "I thought it was too good to be true." He get ready to head to town with the others and remembers the head. He says to the others. "I do not believe that we should leave the head unguarded, we should take it with us or I will stay here and watch over it."

Arrisa
Wednesday July 26th, 2000 4:56:28 PM

Arrisa stopped outside the village and watched the others begin to walk awak. She hated going into civilised places, but it didn't show externally. She gathered herself together and then slowly followed behind everyone else...

DM Kent  d20=3
Wednesday July 26th, 2000 5:21:47 PM

Watching Bill closely, Marteus answers, "the town died within two days of the loss of the head due to a combination of things. Part due to the magic associated with the Sentinel Statue and the protections left there by the Teucri, the lack of an appropriate renwal ceremony and of course one cannot forget the part played by the dragons and the Sahaugin.

As for your friends, indicating the town, you misunderstand me. They will be returned to full life and not Undead as you say. They may just not remember anything of what transpired.

So go see the sights, smell the smells, do what you need to do, but be back here by noon with your answer and with the ring or I will get angry. And dont try to hide or do anything with the ring for I will know and then your lives will be forfeit.

As you all wander through the town, again you see the black-tongued dead, and the unmarked dead, but you also see some with trident wounds, some that seem to have been frost bitten, burned and even some that seem to have had there flesh melted away like acid.

As you all aproach Andovan's General mMercentile, K'isst does indeed see some sort of movement, but when they arrive at the point nothing is to be seen but the two Andovan women lying across each other as if they were trying to protect something. Both the women have multiple puncture marks and wounds in their torso's. As you all try and puzzle this out, you hear a slight, muffled grunt from what seems to be under the two bodies and one of the ladies arms moves bounces up and falls back down.

K'isst
Wednesday July 26th, 2000 10:58:48 PM

K'isst who had a scheme in mind is not surprised to find movement in a location separate than the "invented" movement she had made up to get the party to a certain place. Before everyone begins running to this "real" movement of the two women protecting something, she says, "I led you here on false pretenses. I made up this movement where the temple of Wardd used to be. We're now on holy ground. I wonder if Marteaus can harm us here. I thought it worth a chance anyway. Bill, stay here!!! I'll protect you as I can. Now, friends, the rest of you go help these women if you can."

Bill Troublefinder
Thursday July 27th, 2000 12:44:37 AM

Bill was about to investigate the pile, but hears what K'isst has to say. "Oh, Wardd!" He looks around at the temple. "I like Wardd!" Looking toward the sky, he says sincerely, "Thanks for the fish!"

The little guy sits down in the midst of the rubble, and crosses his legs. "We need to pray ... oh, yeah, check that out," he says regarding the movement in the nearby pile. "But we should ask the gods for wisdom. This Ring is very important, I think. I guess that it kinda took over Galahad's ring, and added its abilities to it," he hypothesizes.

"And the Dark Lord really wants it. He SAYS it's 'just a simple ring of little value.' That's called negotiations. A gnomish proverb I heard once goes, '"It is bad, it is bad," says the buyer, but when he goes away he boasts of his purchase.' But it's also a lie. So we know he is not wholly committed to truth. Duh!"

Bill muses over the offer. "If he can restore genuine life to our town ... not undeadlings ... that would seem to be a good thing. A very good thing. But, if we give him the Ring, what overall good or ill would that bring to the Wold?"

Continuing, he observes, "I think he has some sense of the law, or of rules. But he is not a good man, I'd say. Calling Gargul a 'washed up do gooder' is really a strange description. Did Gargul used to be good? Maybe. Of course, I could be wrong about much of this, but I don't think so. Anybody here heard much about him before?"

Bill sighs. "We have, what, two, three hours before noon? I think your idea is good, K'isst, to remain on this holy ground for a bit. I'm going to go into a special kind of rest. My uncle, who taught me a lot about how to do some things, calls it 'rejuvenation.' I'll hang on to the Ring for now, unless someone else has a better idea."

"Akhum, and K'isst. You're both priests, right? As you are able, add your prayers. They shall be protection, indeed. Rond, my strong friend, and Sedar, astute one, think you, too, and pray. We face a decision, one which may bring life, or death, or both. Draax, noble of spirit and steadfast. Your mind is sharp. Pray for even greater sharpness."

He moves a small chunk of wall that was pressing under his thigh, and settles down again. "Arrisa, one with hidden depth, and Arien, skilled in tactics ... join us in asking for the guidance of the gods."

Bill closes his eyes, confident in the protection and attention of some portions of the host of heaven. "Do what you need to," he says quietly. A sharp intake of breath through his nostrils precedes a slow outbreathing through his pursed lips. The Ring lies still in his right hand, and his left covers the closed fist upon his lap.

If you need me sooner, call and i'll run to join you...". With that, Arrisa jog's off to find a wood. [OOC: Sedar - the two women are dead. Only Merik is found alive, so far. Praise the heaven's he made it! Merik is the boy whom Bill & Rond met on the way to the House of the Crystal Sphere.

Merik was going to:
1. Keep an eye out on the militia, to see who was being alert, and who not;
2. Find hiding places for himself and the townsfolk.

If you go to the archives, and select the episode "The Sentinel Part 1" (or straight to the URL of <http://members.tripod.com/woldian/windhorn/B6email.html>, about 65% into it, you'll see an intro to the resourceful little boy, as he tries to plant some green slimy stuff in Bill's pocket. He is also the one that caused the chaos on the merry-go-round with the giants. Later, just before the party headed out to retrieve the Head, Bill, Galahad &K'isst went out looking for him. There's a bit about that in B7email.html, or The Sentinel Part 2.

Merik's father was also a benefactor of the group, having given Borbo an underwater breathing device.]

Kisst watches the scene, but will not leave holy ground as long as Bill has the ring. She guides Bill to the very center of the old church. "I hope he can't hurt us here. If he can, then The Gods of Wold have chosen not to help us and we're on our own. If we're on our own, then it's too late anyway. We should just give him the ring."

[short backstep] Just before entering into his trance of rejuvenation, Bill replies to K'isst, "If the righteous gods are for us, who can oppose us? If it is their will that, for whatever reason, we give the Ring to the asker, then I shall do so willingly. If they somehow tell us not to give it, then it will be up to us, I suppose, to oppose his desire with all our wit and will."

As he settles in, he looks up at K'isst. "Thank you, good friend." He smiles a tired but grateful smile at her, and crinkles his eyes.

Bill then looks at the ring in his hand for a moment, and recloses his fingers over it. "As I meditate, my spirit shall seek the guidance of our heavenly patrons. In any event, I do not think the asker will bother us before noon. I think he will keep his word. And I told him I, at least, would return. And if for any reason he should not restore life to our village, perhaps someone else, more worthy of our ... confidence, might so do." Bill then closes his eyes, and begins his measured breathing.

Tuesday August 1st, 2000 5:02:18 PM

As Arissa enters the wooded glade, she notices that there is a ring of mushrooms entirely encirling the open meadow. There is also a nice comfortable grassy knoll in the middle of it.

As Draax watches the head and Marteus watches him, Draax starts feeling more than a bit sleepy as the sun starts to warm things up. Marteus watches as Draax's eyes droop and as he covers a few yawns. "Andraaxius, You really should get some rest, you seem to be tired I think I am going to go check on your friends. The head isn't going anywhere now." And with that comment he vanishes from sight.

As Rond and Ahkum dodge Merik's ineffective barrage they notice what looks to be a small dark whole under the area where Merik crawled from. As Rond calls Merik's name the boy begins to calm down, although there is an extremely panicky look in his eye. "Who is it? Who are you? How do you know my name?" Just as he finishes his questions, the boy collapses unconcious at your feet.

"Hmm, seems he could verify or deny what has been said about time passage."

Arrisa carefully looks around. She doesn't see anything threatening so far, so she carefully picks her way to the grassy knoll, showing the utmost care and respect for the nature around her. She was especially careful not to touch or damage the mushrooms in case they were marking a temple of sorts. When she reaches the knoll and sits down, she begins to pray to her goddess, her quarterstaff across her knee in case it is needed

DM Kent
Wednesday August 2nd, 2000 9:43:19 PM

As Sedar inspects the hole he realizes that it is a small roughly cut out hole in what seem to be storm cellar doors leading under the store.

Bill, feeling quite refreshed, realizes that while his prayers/questions seem to be going out into the ether there doesn't seem to be much if anything in a way of any response coming back.

Almost as Bill is getting ready to give up he hears a quiet voice in his head. "Just give the ring up. It matters little in the bigger scheme of things." "Your town will live again." "I gave you my word." "Just give me the ring."

Ahkum and Rond get Merik comfortable and while there don't seem to be any injuries visible, it is obvious that he has not been eating or drinking well for some time.

While K'isst sits and frets she notices a familiar figure appear at the edge of the Temple grounds. As Arissa enters the mushroom ring and moves toward the knoll, the sunlight disappears and it becomes twilight. By the time she gets to the knoll she is suddenly surrounded by hundreds of fairies. All either have a weapon or a musical instrument in their hands. A male fairy, slightly large than the others flies forward and stops several inches from your face.

"Know you not of Fairy Rings mortal?" "Why have you come here?" "Be careful how you answer mortal, for a lie will, most certainly, mean instant death."

<< Arrisa simply blinks in confusion for a moment. She had never seen a fairy before, or even a fairy ring. She spoke quietly, and totally truthfully. "No, I do not know of fairy rings. I am sorry. I came here because it looked peaceful. I wish to pray to my goddess Mittiri for help. The village a little way from here was hit by something...horrible. There are others there also praying in their own ways to their own gods and goddesses for help." She looks around at all the fairies and smiles slightly. "I mean you all no harm. If you wish me to leave, then I will. If you wish me to give my weapon up to prove this, then I will also do that. As I said, I simply wish to pray, nothing more." She waits quietly for the fairies answer. >>

Bill Troublefinder
Thursday August 3rd, 2000 1:30:56 AM

In his mind, Bill answers the voice. *"Oh, hello. Since you can figure out some of the things I'm thinking, and can tell me what you want me to hear, will you tell me a few things, Marteaus?"*

The halfling awaits some sign of assent, then continues. *"Very well, and thank you. Permit a small bit of babble, if you will."*

Mr. Troublefinder switches to speaking out loud, eyes yet closed. He wants K'isst to know at least his side of the conversation. "You claim our giving you the Ring would be a relatively small thing. Yet you desire it strongly - to the point of threatening us with death. To the point of offering a great gift - the lives of our friends and neighbors."

Bill switches to communicating the following through his thoughts. *"I am willing to risk death, if opposing you will benefit the Wold. Your threat, and I do not doubt your ability to carry it out, does not dispose me to submit to your will."*

Out loud again, Bill notes, "But the lives of our friends would be an enormous benefit." Bill pauses for a moment, taking a deep breath, "We cannot overlook it."

"The Ring must have enormous power," muses the hobbit. "And, I think it can combine with other rings, and gain their powers. The previous bearer of the Ring of the Water evidenced great powers." Rather drily, he suggests, "I trust you know a bit more about it than this."

Bill smiles, and says, "I suggest you don't try swallowing it," then gets serious, and interrupts this thought with a quick, "Not that I'm offering it. Our group will decide.

"So, enough of that. My questions - and my friends may have others - are:

"How will you use the Ring to help the people of Wold? Will you pledge to use it in service to the good, and honorable, and just, and praiseworthy, and noble, and true? Will you pledge not to use it for evil, or ignoble, or, um, unkind purposes?”

"You may hold we have no right to ask you these questions. You may think me an upstart. You, Dark One, Marteaus, may have the power to squish me like an insect." With sincerity, Bill adds, "I admire your restraint in refraining from doing so, sir."

And after a brief pause, he concludes, “But perhaps you would prefer answering these questions in the presence of my friends?” And he opens his eyes, and sees [I presume] Marteaus standing there just outside of the edge of the crumbled Temple of Wardd.

"What just and honest claim do you have for this Ring of the Water, other than dark desire?" he asks, still sitting cross-legged amidst the rubble, left hand over right fist over Ring. "How will you benefit the Wold if this Ring you bear? Please be not angry, but, might there not be hands better suited than yours to wear it? May the righteous gods, and the Lord of this temple, and the Sentinel, and we be witness to your answer."

Bill observes Marteaus' countenance, ready for action, or ready to make an agreement, based upon what he sees, and hears. His will is guarded. And in the background of his mind, his prayers yet ascend.

Marteus, standing at the edge of the ruined temple, looks at Bill. "Little Troublefinder, I find that I am getting extremely tired of your questions and interference." "I offered you a trade only because it suited my whim at the moment and because I know how you mortals like to trade and barter."

"Now then, you have just about 2 hours to make your decision and then the first of you will die. After that one will die every 5 minutes until you give me the ring or you all are dead and I just take it. Let's see, just so you have something to look forward to, the boy will be the first to die."

As Sedar looks into the hole, he can just make out what seems to be steps leading down. No other signs of life are visible.

Arien heads out to check on Draxx and finds him sound asleep by the Sentinel Head.

Rond makes Merick as comfortable as possible. his breathing eases and a bit of color returns to his cheeks. However Rond also notices that the tips of Merick's little fingers are black.

The Fairy King looks at Arissa a moment and then as one all the fairies start laughing, sounding like thousands of little bells being rung. In between guffaws, the Fairie King manages to gasp out, "She wants to leave." Which starts off yet another round of uproarious laughter. After a few moments the laughing quits and the king looks at you and says, "No, I think not. I do not believe I will let you leave just yet. Perhaps in a hundred years or so." As for your weapons, you may keep them or not as you wish. For should you choose to use them you will be dead before you finish drawing it." "I think perhaps we shall dance for a while." Almost immediately there is lots of music, reels and jigs are being played and performed by the fairies and the king turns to you and says, Dance. Roll save vs spell at -3. (roll on the board as if you were posting and I will check there)

Arissa finds herself starting to dance to the fairy music. It seems that you must have danced for days when the music finally stops. You are extremely tired, thirsty and hungry. The faries bid you follow them and they lead you to a large feast. There are all sorts of nuts and berries, grains, breads, and vegetables to eat and there are several sweet wines and beverages. You are suddenly surrounded by 8 small, very handsome male faries each is offerring you something to eat or drink.

<< Arrisa is slightly shocked at hearing she may have to marry a fairy. That thought did not comfort her. She then decided that she HAD to get away and find everyone else. Arrisa acted normally, enjoying the feast and the dancing. Once the dancing spell had worn off however, she attempted to sneak away from the fairy camp. Using her skills as a ranger, an elf and a wilderness runner to hide and quickly escape from the faires and return to her companions >>

"What boy?" Bill asks. "K'isst, what boy is he talking about?" He awaits her answer - Merik, of course.

"Merik? Merik! He's alive? Oh, he's alive!" Bill stands up, and dances in a little circle. "Oh, I knew he was resourceful. I knew he'd make it! He did as I asked! Oh, what a good boy!" Bill pauses in his exaltation, and asks, "Where was he found? Oh, have him come here!"

Bill catches up on the news from those who have been out and about.

Responding to Sedar, Bill begins to answer, then says, "Tell you what, let's get everybody here, and talk this over. I'll tell you what I think about the Ring, and we can think about what Marteaus is asking. Demanding, really. And, offering."

Bill, heeding K'isst's earlier counsel, remains in the rubble of the Temple of Wardd. "Sedar, could you gather Rond, Draax, Arrisa, Arien, Ahkum, and Merik? I'd better wait here."

Arien as you aproach the head and try to shake Draxx feel very sleepy suddenly. Save vs spell -3.

Marteus remains standing at the edge of the temple facing Bill except for one moment where he turned toward Rond and company. Turning back he all but snears at Bill and says, I think I will remain here while you make your decision so that I can watch you sweat a bit.

Each time Arissa seems to be getting near what appears to be the mushroom ring she finds herself back at the hill and surrounded by laughing Fairies. The King finally confronts her on her third attempt. "Is the prospect of marrying me so horrid? Do I not have a pleasant countenance?

<< Arrisa simply shakes her head. "I don't marry people that I don't know, and I don't like to be kept in one place without a choice in the matter.". Her face clearly showed that she wasn't very happy, but it didn't show that she was desperatley trying to keep herself under control. "I do not like to be with any form of civilisation for too long, and though this is a very enjoyable place, I feel uneasy. I need to get back to the forest. You can see I am an elf and you should understand that.". Arrisa's grip on her quarterstaff tightens slightly and she continues to speak. "Plus, I don't think Mittri would be very happy if you kept one of her rangers from doing her job, do you?"

The halfling is moved by K'isst's words and courage. "Boy, you feel pretty strong about it, don't you, K'isst? I don't know. I need to think a little more. I'm gonna rest for an hour. Maybe the rest of our group can get together by then." Bill yawns. He sits down again. "Where is everybody? I wanna hear what everybody has to say before we give a final answer."

He leans over and says to Marteaus, "You'll raise, like, everybody? If we give you the Ring?"

Bill tries to resume his rejuvenative meditation, but it doesn't seems to help much, what with the smelly scary red-eyed sepulchral man overseeing. *"Do none of the gods even care?"* he asks plaintively in his thoughts.

Bill thinks to the Ring, *"Oh, Ring of Water, what do you want? Do you have a will? I know you have power."* He doesn't really expect a response. He holds the ring so that it covers the tip of his index finger, his thumb completing a circle, his left hand yet over his right, and he rocks back and forth, hoping that his friends and companions will come.

"If you're like powerful and stuff, why don't you teleport our missing comrades here so we can get this over with." K'isst pulls her trident and begins sharpening it. "All this civilized talking about things just serves to make the evil deed nearly look like it's good. Bill, evil can look good, if not then no one would ever do it. However, evil can't stay looking good for long. Eventually it shows it's true colors and those who follow it's path can't stay just a little evil. They must become worse and worse until they are stopped or they realize how stupid they've been and change."

"How do we know he won't keep his promise? I think he would."
