An appeal to Gargul

Gargul's Jester
Tuesday September 4th, 2007 1:43:28 PM

Once the group deposits its weapons, holy symbols, and magical components in a pile, you set off south a ways. A few paces south takes you to what appears to be a burial area, with a number of mounds in a row. On top of each mound lies a different item. On one is a bejeweled necklace, now tarnished and almost rusting; on top of another lies a large warhammer, while on yet another can be found a pair of curved daggers, finely decorated and carved.

This seems to be a fitting place from which to depart to meet Gargul, and the group stops. Tratain draws forth the scroll.

Standing in the middle of the group, he begins reciting from the lengthy parchment, mixing words and phrases of divine significance with recitations of Jova's death in combat.

Minute after minute passes as Tratain continues. Finally, as he comes to the end of the scroll, the world around you seems to ripple before it begins fading into darkness. The distant hut is quickly obscured from view, followed by your pile of weapons and the woods to your south and east. Soon you can only see a few feet of grass in any direction, and even the sky has turned completely black and devoid of stars. Finally, even the grass beneath you has vanished.

Each of you stands in a black void, unable to see but somehow aware of the others' presence. After what might be an eternity or a few short moments, the darkness begins to lighten ever so slowly.

From black, the world becomes lighter, and lighter; now a dark shade of gray; now lighter; now the light gray color of riverstones; and brighter; flashes of light appear beyond the grayness; a floor forms beneath your feet, hard, white marble without a speck of imperfection; Walls appear in the distance - this room must be enormous! - also of marble, with finely-wrought pillars set into them.

As the room comes into view, you see that there are no windows or doors, no seats, no tables or other furniture. It is simply a massive, marble, hollow box.

Then, as if from nowhere, you see a black throne before you, as if it was there all along. A rather short shape sits on the throne, its feet not even reaching the marble floor. Its head is cowled, and it wears a smooth, black mask over its face.

The figure sits for a moment in silence, regarding you, then reaches for its mask. Suddenly, it rips the mask away and yells, "BOO!"

You behold a short, ugly little man, complete with a long hooked nose and warts covering his face. "Me scared you! Me scared you!" he sings in a happy, but off-key, tone. "Me Gimp! Boss' helper! Want me to get Boss?" he asks with an excited look on his face.

"Ooh, Boss not like this. Boss real busy boss, always something to do. You no better waste Boss' time. Don't worry!" he calls as he turns his back and walks away from you. "Me get Boss now! Gimp like being useful, it fun, fun!"

He walks away from the group, somehow gaining more ground than would appear possible with his short little legs. Before you know it, he reaches the far wall, but instead of stopping, he walks right through it, leaving you completely alone in the large room.

The white liontaur keeps a stiff spine and tries to act confident as he is whisked away on magical tour to stand in front of the black throne.
He doesn't quite know what to make of the funny little man, and so the conflicting emotions within his head remain there, quietly dreading what might happen next...

Juliander
Tuesday September 4th, 2007 10:27:19 PM

Initially startled by Gimp, a wry look settles squarely upon Juliander's face, "I don't suppose the great god of death is likewise disposed toward gleeful antics? It would be disappointing to know that we all danced at the end of our life's strings for the amusement of a being with a bad sense of humor."

Horvis
Wednesday September 5th, 2007 12:16:19 AM

The hippogriff is taken with his companions to this place. Horvis has never visited here before but the tales are sometimes traded around campfires.

Looking around the space, Horvis is faced with a difficult decision. Somehow, he has the impression that he should be in his natural form. But hooves are clearly not made for marble floors, not that talons are much better. Still, Horvis concentrates for a moment and blurs back into his normal centaur form. Despite himself, Horvis finds himself edging closer to Lumo-Juova.

Jova
Wednesday September 5th, 2007 12:52:46 AM

Jova stands as calmly as possible. With no idea of how things like this work, his nerves are about shot. Well, he had no nerves, but he pretended anyway.

The little ugly man was a sight for sore eyes. Jova liked his personality, and it seemed to make the situation a little lighter.

Draax
Wednesday September 5th, 2007 4:03:32 AM

Draax almost forgot how much he does not like coming here. He takes the servants antics without showing any outward emotions and calming stands in a pose that would be considered At Ease in a military environment.

Tratain
Wednesday September 5th, 2007 7:25:54 AM

Tratain, about to answer each time the little man stops speaking, remains quiet instead when he doesn't stop speaking to wait for answers and then suddenly runs off to find Lord Gargul.

Monthor
Wednesday September 5th, 2007 8:06:16 AM

The dwarf waits....

"Hey Draax, he kinda looked like you..."

Arien
Wednesday September 5th, 2007 9:26:54 AM

Arien likewise remains quiet as he waits for the servant to fetch his master.

Gargul Himself (ACDM Cayzle)
Wednesday September 5th, 2007 11:06:53 AM

The short, ugly little man pops back in through the wall, and, a pace behind him, follows a big human. He is wearing faded black robes that look worn. The dust of the road makes them a little grey. The cowl is thrown back, and you can see the man's head and neck -- if the muscles in his neck are indicative, he is very strong. His features are noble but worn.

He sits down on the throne, and the imp capers toward Jova, who is standing among you. He turns a somersault and lands an inch from the mage. "Here's the guy!" the imp says to robed man, who you must assume to be Gargul.

"I know, Gimp," the man says. "Of course I know. Here, sit down and be quiet." The imp scurries over, a little chastened.

Gargul looks you over. He seems weary, as if he has been under a lot of stress for a long time. If you make a Sense Motive check vs DC30, then Please Highlight to display spoiler: {You might even think he seems somewhat sad.}

"Of course you are adventurers, and one of you has fallen into the Shadows of my domain. Tell me, why should I release this mortal back into life, out of all the many dead? Which is to say, what would you give to have him back?"

"And you." He looks directly at Jova. "Did you throw away your life? Did you treat it carelessly? Do you value it? How will you act, so that I do not see you again soon, should I agree to let you go?"

His tone is deeply serious, and yet languid, as if he has said these exact words many times before, and is tired of asking the same questions of those who come to him with petitions.

Draax
Wednesday September 5th, 2007 2:32:06 PM

Before the god walks in, Draax addresses Monthor's comment, "Yea there is some resemblance; I guess that's what happens when a dwarf and half-elf gets together. By the way, how is your sister?"

As the big guy walks in, Draax's attention is turned towards the god. When the god begins to speak to Jova, Draax finally realizes that he can see their dead comrade. He remains quiet as the group waits to see what happens.

Jova
Wednesday September 5th, 2007 5:18:18 PM

Jova realizes at that moment this whole meeting is for him. Front and center,. He had seen people deal with royalty, although he never had. So he puts on his best face, and moves toward the throne. Once there, he bows his head in reverence and begins.

"Although i feel I did not throw away my life, I was caught unawares. Many of those whom I travel with, were saved with the sacrifice, in retropect it may have been the best outcoe.

"I do enjoy life. I never act, or react follhardy. I have adventured for some time now, and have become fairly well known in the Wold. I expect to become even more known, traveling with these men.

"I know little of the Gods. Very little of you as well. If you granyt me life, I will servd as you deem neccessary. I would grant you honor for the rest of my living days. Mote than that I do not know, on this subject, I plead ignorance."

Lumi-Juova
Wednesday September 5th, 2007 6:02:04 PM

The tiger-striped wemic feels the power of the dark, travel-stained man, and waits, cowering, behind his shell of nobility.

magic and gods! what do I say to a being that can give and take life with but a thought! and why do I value this Jova's life more than that of my own clan, my own kin? I have spent so little time with these Ritari. and to return with little Jova is an acknowledgement that magic is beneficial, that death is beneficial... oh, what do I do?

Uncharacteristically, Lumi is silent and unmoving for a long time, though feelings flicker across his face as if deep in inner conflict. Finally he straightens as with a hard-fought decision. Stepping forward a few paces, the tigertaur begins to speak.

"Great Dark Lord, I know of no reason that would justify our companion to return while so many others remain. There are so many selfish reasons to ask for life, from needing a companion's power to not wanting to be the last of your kind." Lumi pauses and then forges on.

"Perhaps, an unselfish reason would move you more. That Jova is of a group who thinks not for themselves, but for the good of all innocent people. That those of no power have just as much right to have fruitful lives as anything else. Should not these ones have protectors such as Jova?"

Monthor
Wednesday September 5th, 2007 6:49:09 PM

As Gargul, Monthor politely waves his hand at him...

"'Sup Gar..."

Monthor... almost let one pass...
Wednesday September 5th, 2007 6:53:00 PM

To Draax...

"Me sister? She's fine....Me didn't know ye were into bearded chicks Draax.? Oh and your mom says 'hi'.

( ooc> Oh, so MANY 'yo momma is so [insert here] ' jokes to make.. all of which would get me kicked off the board!!!!! )

Horvis
Wednesday September 5th, 2007 9:31:34 PM

The centaur listens to the banter between his companions, not sure that this is the correct way to meet with a deity. But it may be a method of dealing with nervousness.

Horvis has always felt that death is part of the natural order. In that, his beliefs are not too different from those espoused by Gargul. After consideration, Horvis speaks after bowing to the deity.

"Our companion died while thinking of others, ourselves. He was trying to protect us, not running or fleeing."

"I think that he died too soon."

Juliander  d20+15=30
Thursday September 6th, 2007 12:38:42 AM

Addressing Gargul, "My dear lord... what would you ask of us. It seems rather presumptuous of us, being mortals, to place a price on the life of one so highly valued."

Tratain
Thursday September 6th, 2007 7:25:52 AM

Tratain Bows to Gargul and says "We believe Jova still has much good to do in the Wold, and I'm sure that we would perform any task that you require of us in order to have him back."

OOC:Sorry for being short, and I'll have the posting report up later today. There was no post on Monday and I've worked two 14+ hour days since then. I'll actually have time later tonight

Gargul's Price (ACDM Cayzle)
Thursday September 6th, 2007 3:18:17 PM

[OOC: I'll assume the jocular exchange between Monthor and Draax happened before the god entered.]

First, Gargul turns to Jova. "You speak well, mortal. You may serve other gods in your heart, but honor me, then, as well through the days of your life, and may they stretch long ahead of you. Know me as Gargul, God of Birth and Death, Beginnings and Endings. Go among those who do not know my name, so that the mercy of Gargul will be known throughout the Wold."

Horvis talks about Jova's bravery, and that he dies to protect his friends. Lumi-Juova also asks for Jova's life because he is a protector of others. "But he could not protect himself." Gargul says. "So in the end, does that matter? Maybe you can make it matter, you Taurs. I charge you to protect Jova, who then will be free to protect others."

Juliander asks Gargul to set a price, not knowing what to offer. Tratain volunteers a service to satisfy the god. Gargul smiles. or does he frown? It is hard to tell what that grimace means.

"Very well. I charge you both to do this, then. Travel with Jova and those who will protect him to a people who do not know my name. There, cause to be built, with your own personal resources, a chapel to honor me.

Gargul looks at Draax, Arien, and Monthor, who have yet to make an offering or speak on behalf of their comrade. "What of you reluctant ones, then? Have you no care for your fallen comrade? Would you give even a single word, a single gold piece, a single deed, to return him to life?"

Monthor
Thursday September 6th, 2007 6:06:36 PM

Me've promised the others to show me manners great god and will try me best to say me peace without offending thee...

Know this.
Me've died for me friends before Gar and me would die for them again. Me greatest joy is to protect the weak. Me greatest honor to keep me brothers from entering your halls until they be to old and weak to hold a blade.
Me greatest sadness that me wasn't able to save honourable Jova.

:: Monthor waves his left arm towards his friends. ::

We all be the Grey Knights... We ride as brothers. We live life to the fullest and take our pleasures where and when we can. We try to do the best we can to only crack the skulls of those that deserve it. We're kind to children and dumb animals.

:: Monthor crosses his massive arms across his chest. ::

What can me offer a God? No more then what me already do everyday Gargul. To do the best me can to help as many as me can. Me'll promise you this.. when next me come to your halls in the arms of death, it will be with me axe held high having fought with all of me heart, mind and soul to do what's right.

Give me my friend back Gargul! And me will do me best to walk your halls before a frey sends him back ye. Ye have me word.

Draax
Thursday September 6th, 2007 6:40:01 PM

Draax looks up at the god, "I do not believe that Jova should have died when he did and I am here to petition for him to get another chance. If it is in my power, I will do what needs to be done to have Jova returned. If it is not in my power, I will still attempt to do it."

Lumi-Juova
Thursday September 6th, 2007 7:01:49 PM

Protect Jova

The words pound through Lumi's brain, and there is no thought of disobediance.

Protect Jova

The blue eyes are bright as with a fierce grin, Lumi draws his large sword and moves to Jova's side.

Protect Jova

Lumi places his sword point to the floor and then grasps the blade with his hand. "Jova of a strange land from me, we are Knights together. By my blood you are my Wunjo, and I will protect you."

Juliander
Thursday September 6th, 2007 7:51:58 PM

Curious as to what sort of peoples would not know of Gargul, Juliander accepts, "Done... I will do as you ask mighty lord of death."

Monthor ooc
Thursday September 6th, 2007 8:06:42 PM

To avoid possible issues.

"with offending thee"
is a typo and should read

"without offending thee. "

Cayzle OOC: LOL! I'll fix it!

Jova
Friday September 7th, 2007 12:34:19 AM

Jova feels o fear. Whether he feels none, or just cant feel is another matter. He watches as the tigerstriped taur pledges his loyalty. Noone had ever done anything like that before. In fact, these few people were his very first friends, in many a year. He doesnt know whether the others can hear him in this realm, but he addresses Gargul with thesense they can.

"Master Gargul," Jova continues with bowed head, "I would consider it an honor to serve you. I am a vagabond. I lve by the credo, 'Where I lay my head is home'. All my life as been wandering with no sense of pupose.

"On this day i pledge my heart to you. I have heard in circles of the unsavory a group of followers you call the Grim. If you find me worthy I would like to join this group. Once i become part of thew Dragon Consortium Iwill build a chapel in your name. With the influence of the Consortium, I will use my influence to your ends. This is my solemn vow. This shall be my purpose, in life, and in death."

Arien
Friday September 7th, 2007 2:50:15 AM

"I am no miser when it comes to fallen comrades and will assist with the task that you have set before my companions. Your name will be spread and the people shall come to know the name of Gargul."

Gimp's Prophecy (ACDM Cayzle)
Friday September 7th, 2007 4:58:56 PM

Gargul nods at Monthor's and Drax's and Arien's words. "So be it. Assist your comrades in their tasks for me. Then I will be satisfied.

Gimp paws at Gargul's knee. "Master! Master! Look at these mortals!"

"What, Gimp?" asks the god.

"The 'gray night' and the 'forelegs forward' and the 'midget jester' -- the prophecy, Master!"

"Yes ... I see. Excellent point." The god seems interested and intrigued, for a moment.

"I think I have one more piece of business with you before I release Jova here. I will be right back."

The god swiftly stands and steps out. You are left alone with Gimp.

"Hee hee! I saw it! I got it right! Strawberries for me! I earned 'em!"

He capers and leaps on the throne, where he sits on his head and giggles.

Draax
Sunday September 9th, 2007 10:31:53 PM

Draax nods to the god when told to help the others in their service to the god. When the god leaves, Draax hopes that whatever news he brings back to the group will be good news.

Juliander
Monday September 10th, 2007 12:09:08 AM

Juliander looks askance at Gimp, thinking Who would have ever suspected a bard could be brought so low.

Monthor
Monday September 10th, 2007 6:37:15 AM

Hey Julie, that little dude called you a 'midget jester'. That's funny.

Tratain
Monday September 10th, 2007 9:30:23 AM

Tratain still deep in thought about his task for Gargul looks up at the mention of a prophecy.

Jova
Monday September 10th, 2007 10:18:17 AM

Jova is z bit concerned. Did the God not like or accept the pennances of his friends? He just left, and on the word of the lttle ugly fellow. Now what?

Arien
Monday September 10th, 2007 10:23:00 AM

When Gargul leaves Arien sighs to himself quietly, doing business with a god was rarely good for one's health; resurrections withstanding.

The Final Deal (ACDM Cayzle)
Monday September 10th, 2007 1:51:03 PM

Gargul returns, bringing with him an armored dwarf. He looks like he has been working with his hands, which are actually a bit stained with his labors.

The god of the dead grimaces.

"This, then, is our bargain. I will return Jova to you alive again. In return, Jova will spread my word among those who have never heard of me. Juliander and Tratain will go with him to build a chapel for those who wish to honor me. Monthor, Arien, Horvis, Lumi-Juova, and Draax agree to protect them in their work. Finally, in addition, you will accept into your company this dwarf, named Vedik, in fulfilment of prophecy."

"If you agree, then go hence as one team. If you do not, then I will keep these two spirits with me. What say you?"

Agree or not, you all end up back in the Wold. The spell is over. But will Jova and Vedik return with you?

Vedik
Monday September 10th, 2007 2:04:32 PM

The dwarf moves slowly, confused. He shields his eyes with his hands, as if the room is too bright for his eyes.

Lumi-Juova
Monday September 10th, 2007 2:13:15 PM

The white, tiger-stiped wemic is completely confused and looks at the others with a questioning eye. "Prophesy?", he begins, but the return of Gargul erases further contemplation.

Lumi can only nod, silently agreeing to the Dark Lord's terms, and he rapidly finds himself once again standing among the barrows in the ancient forest.

"I know hunting and scouting", he announces to no one in particular, "but this trail is strange to me."

He is still holding his naked sword by the blade.

Juliander
Monday September 10th, 2007 8:05:01 PM

"AGREED!" No sooner does he say the word, Juliander finds himself blinking away the disruptive transition back into the world of the living.

Tratain
Monday September 10th, 2007 8:57:49 PM

Tratain looks over the Dwarf for a moment and then says "I accept your terms, I will travel fourth and find a place where no one knows the name of Gargul and have a temple constructed there. We will also accept this dwarf into our company, to be one of the Knights from now on. We are currently undergoing testing by the Dragon Consortium to gain entrance to thier ranks. May we finish this first task they have assigned us before traveling away from where we are to find a place to build your temple?"

The centaur nods, indicating his acceptance of the task decreed by Gargul.

"I will help protect the group as they build a chapel to honor you."

Horvis then waits with his companions for the return to the Wold.

Draax
Monday September 10th, 2007 10:20:47 PM

Draax looks closely at the dwarf, "If we accepted members into the group on the recommendation of heroes and dragons; it would be foolish to not accept someone that was recommended by a god."

Once they are back into the wold, Draax says, "At first, I was thinking that the god wanted to trade dwarves, but I guess that was just hopeful thinking on my part."

Monthor
Tuesday September 11th, 2007 9:07:29 AM

"Let's do it. "

Draax says, "At first, I was thinking that the god wanted to trade dwarves, but I guess that was just hopeful thinking on my part."

Monthor
" Your just upset that now there's another member of the party that's prettier then you. "

Vedik
Tuesday September 11th, 2007 9:56:35 AM

As the world appears around him and things begin to take shape, the new dwarf promptly falls to his knees and begins to wretch, though thankfully his stomach appears to be empty.

Getting a better look, you can see greying brown hair and beard is closely cut, and he shows some signs of age. He wears silvery plate armor, and carries a silvery shield. Over his armor is a white vestment with a reddish brown hand adorning its center, and the same color trim along the edges. He carries a worn backpack, and a dark metal mace hangs from his side.

Wiping his mouth he looks about weakly. Slowly he begins to speak "Where..am...I?" He tries to look at everyone, but you can see he is having trouble focusing.

OOC: Hi all. Glad to join you :)

Lumi-Juova
Tuesday September 11th, 2007 12:53:55 PM

The white wemic feels like speaking slowly himself. A direct confrontation with a god of the Wold is a new and awesome thing. "I never really believed in your Northern gods before..."

The great white head shakes slowly back and forth, and he focuses on Vedik, his black eyes taking in the other's appearance.

"I am Lumi-Juova, Wunjo of Jova and the Harmaa Ritari." The statement has no room for doubt.

Lumi is stout and muscular in feline and hominid forms. His white coat is thick with long black stripes spanning his shoulders, flanks, and rump. Large mutton chops and stiff white hair frame his blunt bronzed face and almond shaped black eyes. On his human torso, he wears brightly colored felt tunic of blue shot through with yellow, black, white, and red geometric designs around the cuffs, collar, and hem. (Think Siberian Tiger -- Finnish mix)

In his hand, Lumi has a hand-and-half sword, with several sheaths of other weapons about his person. The slight jingle of armor is noted under the bright blue tunic.

Back to the Woods
Tuesday September 11th, 2007 1:18:58 PM

Before Tratain even finishes his question, Gargul says dismissively, "You will do as you think our bargain entails. Be not mistaken."

As everyone accepts the terms proposed by the god, you find yourselves back in the clearing where Phaedrus left you. There is nothing so much as a sensation of travel, but simply a change in sensory input so fast you cannot even perceive it. One moment you are looking at Gargul and his assistant, then next, standing next to a row of graves, with only a bright flash of light, in the shape of a tall man, fading from your eyes, that says you may have been elsewhere.

Looking around, you see that the clearing is now bathed in pre-dawn light. You can more easily make out the ramshackle house off in the distance, though it appears nothing is stirring yet.

Phaedrus, returned to her human form, sits cross-legged next to your equipment, eyes closed, and appears to be deep in meditation.

Standing in the middle of the crowd is Jova, returned to his mortal shrouds. He looks around in amazement for a moment at the sight of his friends.

Before the group, on his knees, is the dwarf introduced as Vedik. Barely able to speak, he finishes vomiting and looks around in bleary-eyed confusion.

OOC: Welcome to the game, Troy. Everyone feel free to multiple post while you do introductions, etc. By the way, surprise, we have a new member. Given the manner of introduction, I thought it might be fun not to mention it before now.

Vedik
Tuesday September 11th, 2007 2:05:48 PM

"I...am..Vedik" the older dwarf begins, turning his head to focus on Lumi-Juova. He blinks several times, as if he doesn't quite believe what he is seeing.

He stands, though he is clearly unsteady. Taking a moment to straighten his vestments and armor, he then checks something under his armor at his neck and is clearly relieved. With a deep breath, he begins again.

"I am Vedik, servant of Alemi and potter."

His grey eyes dart between everyone in the area, and you sense great confusion and perhaps a slight wariness mixed in with a general unsteadiness.

He asks again, "Where am I?"

Jova
Tuesday September 11th, 2007 3:13:50 PM

Jova had had problems standing, Draax leaving his body piled in a heap. There he was, in all his own glory, back among the living. He feels his facial features, and his chest, moving down to his legs, yep all there.

He jumps upo and down for a few monents, odd feeling it was to feel normal. Except now he wore a wide grin. And he was joyful

He moves to where Draax is standing and slaps his shoulder really hard. "Thanks mate for taking such good care of me body." Then he laughs out loud something you had never seen him do.

Moving over to Lumi he says, "Thank you for your oath on protecting me, I honor you. You will need to explain to me what 'wunjo' is, so ZI can better resapect the title."

"Tratain dear man, we must complete the task given us by the Consortuim. At that point we should have the moneys and unfluence to make the impact of Gargul known. Ahh it feels good to walk around."

Juliander
Tuesday September 11th, 2007 8:30:59 PM

"Well not in the Wold to be sure... but no longer dead either." Juliander seems cheerful to no longer be in the presence of the god of death. "My name is Juliander Phaelix. Well met Vedik of Alemi... you are welcome indeed." Juliander is, without a doubt, in the running for being the most handsome man in all the Wold, though he doesn't care a wit about it. Nearly six feet tall, and thin of build, he has short black hair and jade green eyes that sparkle in the light. Aside from a light crossbow, he doesn't appear to be either heavily armed or armored.

Monthor
Tuesday September 11th, 2007 8:43:34 PM

Monthor is a rough looking dwarf and an obvious veteran of numerous battles. Obvious trait include having ½ of his left ear is missing and a scar running diagonally over his right eye. It is painfully obvious that magical healing was used to fix the eye but the scar remained. Monthor's beard is coal black and braided with red string. He wears 1/2 plate mail and carries a two handed dwarven war axe. A blue cloak hangs over his shoulders.

[In dwarven ]

" Easy Vedik. You be among friends. Me be Monthor of the Dirt City Axe Head Clan. We be the Grey Knights and we've just returned you from Gargul's realm... handed over by Gargul himself appearently. Ye be to join us it seems. "

[In common]

" Don't worry Vedik. This bunch may look ugly but they have strong arms and good souls. Welcome to the Grey Knights. "

Horvis
Tuesday September 11th, 2007 9:57:02 PM

The centaur nods to the dwarf sent back from the Lands of Rest with them. After Vedik introduces himself, Horvis will reply.

"I am Horvis, wanderer and student of the many forms of creatures in the Wold. This is the shape that I was born with."

Horvis is tall and heavy, even for a centaur. In fact, he closely rivals the size and weight of a heavy warhorse rather than some of the lighter varieties of horse. His human torso and equine body is covered by an unusual leather barding, embossed with a leaf pattern. His broad flat face smiles uncertainly at Vedik, showing broad strong teeth. His reddish brown hair closely matches the portions of his body that are visible, although his tail and lower legs are so dark as to be almost black.

Vedik
Tuesday September 11th, 2007 10:09:03 PM

"I...was in the realm of Gargul...Lord of Noble Death?" Vedik says more to himself than anything else.

He slumps down on the ground, his feet out before him. He sits quietly for some time, lost in thought. Occasionally he shakes his head, or mutters something under his breath.

Eventually, he looks up at Monthor and smiles for the first time. "Thank you."

Lumi-Juova
Tuesday September 11th, 2007 10:16:15 PM

The awe of seeing a god is still upon Lumi when Jova comes over and speaks. Lumi smiles wide without showing any teeth. Tossing his large sword on the pile of other equipment, he picks up Jova and playfully cavorts around the glade, ignoring his still-bleeding hand.

"Ha! You are alive!" the liontaur exclaims, tossing Jova exuberantly into the air before placing him carefully on the ground and standing back to look at the wizard. "Wunjo is the term in the Ice Vien for, well, for a friend / comrade / shield brother. I have heard some call it akin to blood-brother." He opens his palm where the sword cut is smeared by clotting blood. "My blood is your blood. Wunjos."

A pensive look that is completely out of character on the bronzed face. "Perhaps a hunter does not require a family if he has Wunjos." And the black eyes look at the other Grey Knights in a new light.

Draax
Wednesday September 12th, 2007 2:02:35 AM

Thinking that what he did was not something that deserves any thanks, Draax smiles at Jova comments, "Sure, anytime; but lets not make it a habit."

Draax nods to the dwarf as he makes his introductions, "You can call me Draax formerly of Windhorn Hamlet and currently of Plateau City. Welcome to the team."

The half-elf wears Mithral chain and has shield across his back. At the moment he looks a little fidgety and unconsciously moves his hands from one part of his body to the next as if he was searching for something and whenever the hands stop moving, he looks longingly at the spot where the group's weapons are piled.

Looks over at the meditating Phaedrus. Draax hopes she will hurry up and take them to the sage so that Draax can reequip himself with his security blankets.

Arien
Wednesday September 12th, 2007 10:17:39 AM

Arien smiles briefly at Lumi-Juova's enthusiasm before turning his attention to the dwarf that returned with them. "I am Arien Silverbow, you may call me Arien though." The elven mage gives a small bow to the dwarf as Arien introduces himself.

Arien is clearly a mage, dressed in sturdy adventuring gear, Arien glances from time to time where the weapons are placed; he clearly would like his spell components back.

Phaedrus & Verash
Wednesday September 12th, 2007 2:14:20 PM

As Vedik and Jova slowly come to their right senses and get a grasp on their surroundings, dawn comes to the clearing, pouring a bright light onto the group and warming your bones a bit from the night's chill.

Phaedrus remains seated, eyes closed, but a noise in the distance calls your attention. Off at the house, a door has opened, and an older man emerges, wearing nothing but his breeches, stretching and yawning. He is thin and fit, and looks to be about sixty years old. His once-dark hair is more than streaked with gray, and a close-cut grey beard hides his lower face. Though older, you can discern lean, sinewy muscles in his arms and chest.

Finishing his long, deep yawn, he finally looks around and spots the group immediately. With a yelp, he darts inside. "Phaedrus! Why didn't you tell me we had guests?" he yells from inside.

"You needed your sleep, dear," you hear the dragon say in a quiet, velvety voice, obviously far too softly for the man to hear. Looking to Phaedrus, she has a smile on her face, and her eyes finally flutter open to look at you.

"Well, then, younglings. It seems the time for your meeting has come," she says. Rising languidly from her seat on the grass and smoothing out her long, silvery dress, she looks the group over.

"Hmm. An old one returns. And someone new as well? Odd things afoot, I'd say. No, don't tell me what happened, I prefer not to know, or care, too much." Turning to Vedik, she says, "Well, child, it seems fate has thrust you into this. You may not be away from the realm of shadow for long. For now though, you'll place your weapons in the pile here," she waves a hand at the pile of weapons, "and . . . interesting. And that finely crafted vessel hiding under your tunic as well, please.

"That crossbow as well, sir Juliander. Thought that would escape my notice?" she laughs.

"Come then, let us meet the man." She turns without another look and glides toward the house.

Draax
Wednesday September 12th, 2007 5:41:28 PM

Draax follows Phaedrus, he puts the thumb of each hand in his belt to prevent his hands from reaching for weapons that are not there.

Horvis
Wednesday September 12th, 2007 9:21:16 PM

The centaur waits for his companions to move since it appears that they may be entering the house. If need be, Horvis will remain outside where he won't block anyone else's access. Or even change into a smaller shape.

After everyone is in place, the shifter listens to what is said.

Tratain
Wednesday September 12th, 2007 10:34:37 PM

Tratain introduces himself to Vedik "Greetings friend Dwarf. My name is Tratain, Follower and sworn Protector of Domi. I don't know for what purpose Gargul has sent you to journey with us, but I'm sure it will be for great good."

When Phaedrus instructs Juliander and Vedik to place thier weapons in the pile he will nod his assent to them. He says after watching Verash "huh, you'd never know from his demeanor that he lives in probably one of the most dangerous places in existence, though it does explain why Phaedrus seems a bit over protective."

He then turns and follows her into the house.

Lumi-Juova
Wednesday September 12th, 2007 10:41:35 PM

Lumi sobers with the old man coming out of the house and Phaedrus' response. Keeping close to Jova, the liontaur will pad to the house with the rest.

Jova
Thursday September 13th, 2007 12:52:35 AM

Jova listens intently to Lumi as he explained what 'wunjo' was. Taking the dagger from his belt he cuts a small slice in his own hand. The reakuty of the pain is etched on his face, not hiding it at all. He then reaches over and clasps hands with the liontaur.

"Wunjo it is then."

Th others had all introduced themnselves to the newcomer. Vedik was it? Jova makes sure to greet the dwarf, simple hello will do, no need to overwhelm the little guy.

Jova is a tall human who wears letaher clothing. He carries a staff on his back alongside his pack. Which by this time is taken from him by one of his froends and placed on the pile of weapons. He places his dagger there as well.

Vedik
Thursday September 13th, 2007 7:23:53 AM

Vedik nods in turn to everyone that introduces themselves.

When asked to place the items in the pile, Vedik hesitates at first, but is reassured by the fact that everyone else seems to have left behind weapons and pouches.

He places his mace on the pile, then pulls a small object from under his armor. The object is a ruby pendant, finely carved into the shape of a pottered jug. This he wraps within some cloth, and places it carefully on the ground, making sure it is safe.

Looking down at his dark stained hands, he shrugs slightly as he walks unsteadily to the house.

Monthor
Thursday September 13th, 2007 8:54:11 AM

Monthor cooperates and follows the others.

Breakfast with Verash
Thursday September 13th, 2007 1:26:14 PM

As you approach the house, you hear a clamer inside. The sounds of dishes and pots being banged around, along with a constant mumbling, greets you.

Once at the doorway, the older man comes forth again, now wearing a loose-fitting woolen shirt, though still barefoot.

"Aha! I must apologize for my rudeness. I've put on some tea, if you are interested. Sit, sit," he ushers you to a long wooden table sitting in the grass outside the door. "I'm sorry," he continues to the two taurs, "I don't have the proper accomodations for everyone. But please, make yourselves as comfortable as possible."

He ducks back inside, and after a few moments, emerges with a teapot and a tray full of mugs, laying them on the table and motioning for anyone interested to help themselves.

Meanwhile, Phaedrus glides past the table and takes a place on the ground near Verash, crossing her legs on the ground. She appears relaxed, though her face retains a serious demeanor, and she never takes her eyes from the group.

Now that the early morning light has brightened up the day, you behold a magnificent sight: in the distance, perhaps five miles away, you get your first sight of the ancient city of Fae Skiemir. Partially enshrouded in fog, the city is clearly enormous, miles or more on each side. Countless palaces and towers, all in various stages of disrepair, rise into the air inside an immense stone wall.

Seeing you look at the city, Verash takes on a serious tone. "Yes, I assume that is why you are here. Let looks not be deceiving. Countless have died breaching those walls."

A sniff from Phaedrus' direction stops him. "Dear, please don't preach this early in the morning," she says. "You know as well as I your warnings never have effect." As she speaks, she nods back toward the row of graves in the clearing. "Why not find out what these younglings want, so we can continue with our day?"

"Right, then," Verash says after giving a long, warm smile to Phaedrus. "Out with it, friends. Many venture to the city of death. Why have you come to me first?"

Tratain
Thursday September 13th, 2007 5:57:04 PM

Tratain walks over towords the table where Verash is sitting, but stops to look at the City now that it is Visible.

After a moment he makes his way to where they are sitting and pours himself some tea and starts sipping it. He says "My Sword Brothers and I are being tested for entrance into the Consortium. The first task laid out to us by Valdor and the other Dragons was to travel to this land, and return with enough wealth to build for ourselves a stronghold, so that the people of the Wold can know where they can travel to for Help and safety in times of need. We were told that you do some kind of research here on the City, and that we were to find you and offer our services while we are here. I suppose to direct our energies to something that may do some good while we are poking about the city."

Lumi-Juova
Thursday September 13th, 2007 6:58:15 PM

Smiling at the old man, Lumi folds himself gracefully onto the grass at one end of the table, and offers the nearest seat for his Wunjo Jova, pouring two cups of tea. Lumi places a huge ammount of sugar in his mug, and drinks greedily. "Master Verash, you are a man of uncommon courtesy to offer your hearth and warmth to strangers!", says the white liontaur.

The sight of the towering spires of Fae Skiemir holds Lumi's tongue for a moment, and he sets appraising eyes on the towers in the distance.

"We are to gather gold, that is true. Yet it is for helping many that we do so. Any words of wisdom that can help us attain our goal would be precious to us."

Tarhapollo the white owl seems totally uninterested in the goings-on, but condescends enough to perch on the table pecking at a biscuit.

Jova
Thursday September 13th, 2007 7:09:42 PM

It wasnt until he saw the owl that he thought of Z. His familiar qas nowhere in sight. Jova used his mind, searching calling. Nothing. Was this to be permanent? It had been many years since he had traveled without the bird, and the loss was palpable. His good mood, happy demeaner all flashed from his eyes and he sat at the table, oblivious to anything else.

Monthor
Thursday September 13th, 2007 8:47:33 PM

Me here to make sur they don't die.

Juliander
Thursday September 13th, 2007 8:48:59 PM

Accepting the tea, Juliander holds the cup in his hands, allowing it to warm them, though he does not drink. Otherwise, the bard sits and listens attentively, as Tratain seems to have a good bead on the appropriate line of inquiry already.

Draax
Thursday September 13th, 2007 8:50:29 PM

Draax takes a mug and pours himself some tea before sitting down. He listens as the others explain their mission and only nods his head to confirm that what is said is true.

Vedik
Thursday September 13th, 2007 9:35:45 PM

Vedik lays on the grass and says little. He declines the tea, looking at it queasily. In fact he seems not all together coherent at times, occasionally muttering something about Gargul's realm. You sense he does not quite believe it yet.

Horvis
Thursday September 13th, 2007 10:05:27 PM

The centaur stands behind his companions holding a large mug in his hands. Horvis nods when his companions answer.

"As they said, we are searching for material wealth. Although I also desire knowledge of the creatures that reside within Fae Skiemir."

DM Matt OOC
Friday September 14th, 2007 12:30:44 PM

All-my sincere apologies, but today's post will not come until tomorrow, most likely (or possibly late tonight).

The module is at my office, and I am out for the day. I may be back there after dinner tonight, but if not, will be in tomorrow morning and able to make the post.

sorry for the delay.

Arien - everything okay? not much posting lately.

Arien
Friday September 14th, 2007 8:37:02 PM

Arien nods at Horvis' response, a good tactical decision that. Arien ponders a brief moment before adding, "Also, and I realize one would not be accurate after this long, but do you have or know where we could acquire a map of the city?"

Verash
Monday September 17th, 2007 10:06:00 AM

Vedik and Jova continue to compose themselves after their recent change in circumstances. Jova yearns for his companion, while Vedik lays on the ground and ponders his situation. Draax and Juliander sit quietly, enjoying their tea and watching the conversation.

"Material gain," muses Verash. "The reason most go into the city, but rarely come out. You see, Fae Skiemir attracts wealth and greed. Those beings living there, for the most part, simply cannot leave. Their greed has bound them to the city, as it would you as well.

"But, your intentions are likely pure enough. Aiding the poor -" he points to Lumi - "protection -" to Monthor - "knowledge -" to Horvis. These are noble goals, and so I can wish you luck in achieving them."

Shaking his head sadly, he looks at Arien. "That, I am afraid, is beyond what I can offer. Any map would be almost completely useless. The last known map was made over a thousand years ago. You can imagine how much has changed since then. I don't even bother keeping any in my research." He taps his chin with one finger. "It might be interesting, though, to see one," he says to no one in particular. "Perhaps if one of you is a skilled cartographer . . . ."

"Offer your services?" he asks when Tratain speaks. "Well, I am protected here about as good as I can be, I think," he says with a smile to Phaedrus.

"Services inside the city, dear," the dragon responds dismissively. "You know I do not venture inside, and there is always some tidbit or other you are looking to learn."

"Ah, yes, 'tis true," Verash says with another smile, this time directed at the group. "But what task to assign?" He stares at the sky for a few moments, then suddenly stands up. "I've got it!" he exclaims, and trots back into the house.

You hear a variety of thumps and bangs, and Verash re-emerges after a few moments carrying a book. "Here is my notebook, Phaedrus," he waves it at the dragon. "I told you it wasn't lost.

"Now," he says, sitting and looking around at each of you. "Here is my proposal: I can tell you where a goodly amount of treasure is within the city. In return, you can acquire some information for me from the city, as well as remove the treasure's current owner, thus providing a service to the world at large.

"Now, I know full well your actual odds of survival in there, and I recognize that I am likely giving you information and getting nothing in return, butI assume none of you will heed my warnings about the dangers in the city?

Fine. Then what say you to this arrangement?"

Monthor
Monday September 17th, 2007 10:19:32 AM

" Works for me. What about the rest of ye ladies? "

Vedik
Monday September 17th, 2007 12:57:04 PM

Vedik nods. "The Gods put me here, not wise to argue. I'll go where the group goes."

Lumi-Juova
Monday September 17th, 2007 3:42:18 PM

His tail lashes in mild irritation at the dwarf, but Lumi will not let himself be distracted from the hunt. "We often caught snow apes in the mountains of the Ice Vien by placing a fruit in a careful tangle of ropes. The ape would grab the fruit, but its fist would be too large to remove from the rope cage. Even when the hunters approached, the ape would never let go of the fruit." He pauses and looks at the sage. "So you are saying the city is like a rope trap, the gold is the fruit, and the Harmaa Ritari are the snow apes?" Thinking hard some more, Lumi says slowly, "and our good intentions are like..." but he can't think of how his thoughts can remove the hand from the trap.

When the offer is made, the white tiger-taur sits straight once more. "I say aye! Though knowing what knowledge and what enemy will help to ensure a successful hunt."

Juliander
Monday September 17th, 2007 3:47:59 PM

Juliander shrugs, "Sounds like a deal to me." He looks around to his friends for possible agreement.

Arien
Monday September 17th, 2007 9:00:56 PM

"I am willing to do this yes, might I ask though what sort of guardian we would be dealing with?" Arien looks at Verash, waiting for an answer.

Draax
Monday September 17th, 2007 9:15:58 PM

"Ya got my vote, it is better than us wandering blindly around the city until we run into something that needs to be killed."

Horvis
Monday September 17th, 2007 9:40:21 PM

The centaur nods with his companions although he has misgiving. Sometimes, Horvis thinks, the task that seems simplest is the most arduous. Still, it would be worthwhile.

"It does, sir. What can you tell us about the guardian and it's treasure?

Tratain
Tuesday September 18th, 2007 7:22:26 AM

Tratain Nods and says "You won't be able to talk us out of entering the City, so any advice you could give us we would appreciate."

Jova
Tuesday September 18th, 2007 10:33:51 AM

"Ya what Tratain just said."

The Mission
Tuesday September 18th, 2007 12:25:04 PM

Verash sighs at the groups unanimous intent to continue. "Well, no use in putting it off. Let me give you what I can by way of history and guidance."

He takes a seat at the end of the table and looks each of you in the eyes. His face takes on a far more somber, almost sad, look as he begins to speak.

"Your analogy is close, my Taur friend," he says to Lumi. "But I would say that greed is the fruit. Gold may be sought for noble purposes - such as all of yours - or ignoble purposes - greed. Greed is what holds the foulness in the city.

"In Fae Skiemir lies riches. In Fae Skiemir lies the wealth of many a bold adventurer. But, few are able to claim what they think is their due.

"As you likely know, the city is infested with evil beings. The various denizens of the dark have taken up abode their, and are not easily removed. There are a number of powerful beings vying for control of the city. Dragons, demons, liches, and other untold horrors all compete to be the richest, the most powerful.

"In fact, this is part of what keeps the outside safe: none of these monsters is able to gain an upper hand over the rest, or at least not for long. They all have their own regions in the city where they rule supreme, but none have been able to extend their control much farther than that. And since most of their attention is centered on battling each other, they are unable to combine their power and find a way out of the city. So, you can see, this 'balance of evil' as I call it is actually a good thing. It ensures that these beings will stay put.

"But, this 'status quo' has changed recently. A particularly vicious and evil demon named Xanaphelas, a relative newcomer to the city, seems to have defeated a few of the other powerhouses there, and has claimed a larger share of the city than normal.

"You see, I keep abreast of goings-on like this. It is part of my research to document as much of the history of Fae Skiemir as I can. I recently failed in saving the life of a noble, but foolish, paladin who thought it his calling to cleanse the city" - he nods to the row of graves in the field - "he came to me broken and battered, and Phaedrus and I did what we could to bring him back, but ultimately, it was his time.

"He did give me enough information though to cause concern. He rambled and raved in his fevers about 'a thousand arms in the dark' and 'Xanaphelas the dark one.' I've learned what I could of the demon after that, which isn't much, except that if she becomes much stronger, other powerful beings will flock to her, and we may see an outpouring of evil from Fae Skiemir into the rest of the world.

"So, she must be stopped, and soon. The upside of this - for you at least - is that she seems to be particularly wealthy. The downside is that she is a most formidable foe, if what that man said is true, and likely she will not confront you alone.

"You will find Xanaphelas in the eastern part of the city. Once you enter, head northeast. You will find a large tower. You will know it due to its size compared to the buildings around it. It stands fully 300 feet above the ground, nearly twice the size of any building close by, and sparkles green in the daylight. You will likely travel miles through the city before finding it. Fae Skiemir can be deceiving: its size is difficult to gauge.

"Now, since you are heading to the city, and since you are going to confront Xanaphelas, there is something you can do for me. I believe the demon has a small set of books, no more than 5 in all. They are not magical nor valuable in any other respect, except for the information they contain. They are historical texts, written by a safe named Veronius before Fae Skiemir;s fall, and I would like more than anything to examine them at length. These books are rather larger than the average tome, both in height and thickness, and are covered in a thick, purple vellum. Bring those books to me, and I will consider myself very well rewarded for the information I give you.

"If you have questions, I will try to answer them, but I do not know much more than I have told. If you have none, then go. Confront the demon. If you defeat her, you may very well be worthy of the Dragon Consortium. IF. Sadly, I expect you to share the same fate as most foolhardy adventurers who travel to the city. But go." He points to the distant walls of Fae Skiemir. "There lies your riches; or there lies your death."

Knowledge Checks
Tuesday September 18th, 2007 12:35:59 PM

Knowledge (planes) check, DC 26 Highlight to display spoiler: {From the scant description, you guess that the demon in question is a Marilith. You recall that Mariliths are female demons with six arms and a long, serpentine tail. They stand about 9 feet tall, and from head to tail are almost 20 feet long.}

DC 31 Highlight to display spoiler: { You know everything above. You also know that Mariliths love to do battle, and are exceptional tactitians. In a fight, you recall, a Marilith tends to attack with a weapon in each hand, while squeezing the life out of its opponents with its tail.}

DC 36 Highlight to display spoiler: { You know everything above. You also know that Mariliths are immune to electric and cold, and resistant to all other elements. Good-aligned, cold iron weaponry is able to hurt a Marilith most effectively.}

Lumi-Juova
Tuesday September 18th, 2007 2:23:46 PM

A white, black-striped tail lashes back and forth. Lumi remains quiet, knowing that talk about 'books' and 'demons' is only so much talk.

What is important is protecting the innocent by the side of the Ritari and his Wunjo. Still, he muses, when they succeed in thier quest, the shared blood spilled would make them all wunjos...

Lumi is ready to retrieve his blades and start for the city now!

Juliander  d20+15=24
Tuesday September 18th, 2007 7:38:29 PM

Having no particular knowledge of the planes, or the creatures that dwell there, Juliander stops and considers stories that he has heard of such creatures, to see if there may be one that matches this Xanaphelas.

OOC: Bardic Knowledge DC 24.

Vedik
Tuesday September 18th, 2007 8:46:19 PM

Vedik listens intently to the old mans words, stroking his beard. When he finishes speaking, Vedik asks a few questions.

"Are there any special protections in the city? Could we fly to the tower, or teleport there?"

"Did the paladin bring anything back with him from his encounter with this Xanaphelas? Even some of its flesh or blood on his weapon would be helpful."

"Which forces of evil does Xanaphelas still oppose?" Could you tell me what you know of them?

To everyone he says, "We should plan for this, and seek to learn what we can before we encounter this Xanaphelas. At the very least, I need a nights sleep."

Draax
Tuesday September 18th, 2007 9:05:40 PM

Draax sits quietly as he listens. It seems that the only possible advantage the group has over Xanaphelas is that hopefully the demon does not know that the group is coming for her.

He listens to any questions that the group might have and once the group is ready to leave, Draax goes over and retrieve his weapons.

Horvis
Tuesday September 18th, 2007 9:36:25 PM

The centaur listens intently as Verash describes Fae Skiemir and the task that he would like performed. Horvis doesn't hear anything about creatures that he could imitate. But, no matter, this expedition to Fae Skiemir is the task before them.

"I know nothing of other realms to judge anything of this demon. But, am I not correct that knowledge of a demon's name provides some power over it? Surely that isn't the demon's true name."

Arien  d20+25=42
Wednesday September 19th, 2007 1:26:32 AM

Arien ponders the words of the dying man and draws some conclusions. "I may be wrong but it does sound like the demon is a Marilith, a half snake woman with six arms. They are expert tacticians and more than competent fighters. They typically wield a weapon in each hand and like to constrict foes with their tail. They are immune to any electrical or cold source of damage and are resistant to all other elements. They are magically protected from weapons as well, you will need a weapon forged of cold iron that radiates good."

OOC: Knowledge: The Planes check = 42

Tratain
Wednesday September 19th, 2007 7:27:03 AM

Tratain sits and Listens to the others talk for a moment. He says "Well we can align our weapons with the wand we bought, but I didn't bring any Cold Iron. The Marilith may have other demons serving it so we should align all our weapons anyway. I think we'll need some slow spells from anyone who can cast it. Also Varesh, what can you tell us of the Nature of Magic in this place. I cast a spell earlier and the effect was somewhat different from what I expected, More powerful. Is that common here? what types of Magic are effected? And what about summoning spells? Is it advisable to use them here or refrain?"

The Mission, part 2
Wednesday September 19th, 2007 10:50:51 AM

While Varesh talks, Lumi and Draax sit back, remaining quiet and introspective, possibly preparing for the ordeal ahead.

Juliander wracks his brain for any tidbits on the demon, but just can't come up with anything useful. Arien, however, calls upon his seemingly vast knowledge of demons to inform the group of just who and what they are going up against.

Varesh listens to each of your comments and questions, and attempts to answer them as best he can.

Turning first to Tratain, Verash says, "Magic sometimes works funny in and around the city. It may ocassionally work more powerfully than expected. A spell may sometimes fizzle and die without producing the expected results. Sadly, it is impossible to predict, being entirely random. My advice would be to simply go about your tasks normally, and hope it doesn't misfire at the wrong time."

Looking to Horvis, Verash continues, "You are a wise one indeed. I am sure that Xanaphelas is simply the name the demon uses in this realm, and not her true name at all. Ahh," he sighs, "would that your task would be that easy...."

Finally, he turns to Vedik. "There are no protections against magic, no. Other than what I said about it possibly working oddly sometimes. Nothing would prevent you from flying or teleporting, that I can think of.

"But, you must be aware of the dangers of over-using your magic. The beings here, they smell magic. They feed off it. From what Phaedrus tells me, you encountered some such beasts last night. The more powerful the magic you use, the more your enemies will be drawn to you. And they will be drawn no matter what. Believe you me, just carrying those fancy gadgets you've got strewn about your persons is going to bring the hordes down on you.

"Now, say you decide to fly through the air for the tower. It may work out just fine. Then again, you might find yourself face to face with a dragon too. What I mean is, there are enemies on the ground and in the air. You aren't likely to save yourself any trouble one way or another.

"As for the poor paladin, no, I don't think he even got close enough to hurt that foul fiend. He had plenty of his own blood and guts covering himself, so I really have no idea."

Pondering silently for a moment, he continues, "I'm not sure exactly what you mean by 'what forces does she oppose.' She opposed anyone or anything that gets in her way, I would imagine, or tries to stop her from reigning supreme in Fae Skiemir.

"If your thinking of looking for allies in there, let me stop you right there. Don't do it. Trust no one and nothing inside that city. Rely on yourselves, and each other, and that is it."

Lumi-Juova
Wednesday September 19th, 2007 11:37:51 AM

Vedik's words of wisdom make the impetuous tiger-taur to rethink his 'charge in and kill them all' plan. No, the Cleric of the Hand is correct, a plan is what is needed.

"A stalk into the city is what is needed", he states. "Move as unseen as possible to conserve our strength to oppose this demon." The black eyes grow opaque as Lumi thinks, and then asks the spellcasters. "I know you have ways of tracking magical items. Do you also have ways to cover thier scent? This may help in avoiding unneccesary attention."

"As for these books that Verash wants, I have little use for them, but can carry them in my large rucksack as it magically expands to keep all inside."

Monthor
Wednesday September 19th, 2007 12:09:15 PM

Arien says

"...They are magically protected from weapons as well, you will need a weapon forged of cold iron that radiates good."

Monthor
" Well, Me don't have that. Me axe flames. "

To Tratain...

" Wand me up brother Tratain... "

" Me'll want to done me cape of the Mountbank before taking the snake lady on then. If she catches me, me can then dimension door meself away. "

Jova
Wednesday September 19th, 2007 12:54:05 PM

Jova listen intently on the subject of magic. It was afterall his mainsty. He made a noteto himself that Varesh did not answeer the question on summoning. Summoned, or conjured magic may work differently then.

After all, demons were summoned, or came from another plane, right?

Vedik
Wednesday September 19th, 2007 1:33:11 PM

The old dwarf snorts. "I would not seek allies in there from all you said. But there is a spell I can cast which works better if you use objects the target hates, fears or opposes. A symbol of one of this demons enemies may be useful for that."

"We could try to scry, but with our limited knowledge I'm not sure how successful I could be. Is there anyone else here who can scry?"

DM addendum
Wednesday September 19th, 2007 5:13:00 PM

Verash appears lost in thought for a moment, then looks at Jova. "I didn't answer your question, newborn!

"Your summoning and conjuration magic will work just as any other magic in Fae Skiemir: that is to say, possibly fine, and possibly oddly. But it will not function any differently than any other school of magic you may use, if that is your concern."

Draax
Wednesday September 19th, 2007 9:32:43 PM

Draax is not really interested in the talk about magic, but he does take notice when Arien talks about the weapons material needed to cause damage to the demon. He knows that his swords are made of the right material, but he wishes he would have brought some holy arrows.

Horvis
Wednesday September 19th, 2007 9:45:20 PM

The centaur looks up at Verash's words.

"You say that our magic items would draw creatures to us? What would happen if the items were ... somewhere else? I mean, when I assume another form, all of the equipment that I have on my person is absorbed. Would the creatures still sense those items?"

Horvis wonders if what is usually a weakness could be turned to the party's advantage. The shifter could remove all of his magic items, store them and then shift so that the items are absorbed.

Juliander
Thursday September 20th, 2007 1:14:01 AM

Listening attentively to Varesh and Arien speak their peace, Juliander remains relatively quiet. Unsure of how he can contribute to the combat at hand, the bard seriously plans to get in there and figure it out as he goes along. Though he does say out loud, "I don't know much about magic attracting those who live there... but I was planning on singing as we walked through the door, and keeping that up until we walked out." Juliander smiles.

Time to Go?
Thursday September 20th, 2007 9:57:36 AM

Verash attempts to answer what questions are directed to him. To Vedik, he replies, "Sadly, I know of nothing that might help you. You are on your own in that regard. I am sure Xanaphelas dislikes any of the other powers in Fae Skiemir, but I know not whether this rises to the proper level of hate, and I have no idea how you might appropriate their likenesses."

Looking next to Horvis, he pauses for a moment, tapping a finger on his chin, then scratching the back of his head. "That, sir, is an interesting question. To be quite honest, I do not know the answer. From what little I know, my guess would be that the idea wouldn't be as effective as one would hope, but I am intrigued. Will you try it, and if you make it out, give me all the details? Yes, that would be a wonderful addition to my research."

As you begin talking amongst yourselves, Verash clears his throat. "It seems you all need to plan your trip. Feel free to stay here as long as you like to rest first, and good luck to you.

"I must go for awhile and begin my work for the day. Phaedrus?"

"Yes darling?" the dragon replies.

"Shall we?"

"Indeed." Phaedrus turns to the group. "You may retrieve your weapons and equipment. It seems we have nothing to worry about from you."

With that, the two walk off south, past the row of mounds, and into the thin border of the woods. You can hear Verash mumbling and pointing at various bushes and flowers as they walk away.

Posting Reports
Thursday September 20th, 2007 10:01:11 AM

Can anyone volunteer to fill in handling the posting reports for awhile? If you volunteer to do so, please be sure you are familiar with the rules/procedures. Thanks!

Juliander
Thursday September 20th, 2007 4:20:23 PM

Juliander recovers his possessions, and then sits back and lets those of a more martial bent do the talking.

Lumi-Juova
Thursday September 20th, 2007 4:38:09 PM

Stays close to Jova while the others sit and dicuss how to go into the elf city ruins.

"I say we mask the magic with other magic."

"I lead, with my hunting senses, but jump back if there is any fighting and let Monthor take point."

"Once we see the demon, Horvis and I can keep beasties off the flanks, arcane spells and Draax keep the demon occupied, while Monthor goes in for the kill with two clerics in support."

Vedik
Thursday September 20th, 2007 8:46:19 PM

Vedik grabs his items and sits with the group, discussing tactics. He ponders the tactics and strokes his beard.

"Do you think Monthor will be able to kill this thing on his own? I can cast my largest heal three times, who else can cast heal here?"

Draax
Thursday September 20th, 2007 10:23:11 PM

Draax retrieves his weapons and inspects each one before putting them away. He listens as tactics are being discussed and adds his comments to the conversation.

"We will need more than Monthor taking on the head demon. If she has a weapon in each of her six hands, she could do a lot of damage even with the healing support. Also unless Monthor has a good aligned or cold iron weapon, he will have to do a lot of damage on each hit to cause her any pain. We need to flank her and make her split up her attacks on different targets. My arrows will be useless against her, so to do any real damage I will need to get close to her. I have a non-magical cold iron long sword that someone can use if needed.

We will need as many good related buffs and warding spells as we can get. We should hit her and her minions with as much holy or good related magic that we can. I think the good related magic will give us an edge."

Draax stops talking and listens as others add their comments.

Horvis
Thursday September 20th, 2007 11:26:41 PM

The centaur picks his way along behind the others while he listens to his companions strategize. Horvis can't help but wonder if his unique talents could make this a lot simpler.

"If you want to deal with the minions, summon some good creatures. I can enhance them and myself - making them bigger, more powerful and tougher."

"I can either take the form like those big cryohydrae we faced right after we got here ... I can deal a lot of damage that way. Or, I can take the form of a dire bear. If I make myself bigger, I could tackle this demon creature and keep it from doing anything else."

Monthor
Friday September 21st, 2007 8:36:06 AM

"Shouldn't Tratain's Holy Word spell take care of most of the minions? "

" Me axe is neither cold irone or good aligned. But me thinks Tratain can take care of that too. "

Jova
Friday September 21st, 2007 10:49:03 AM

Jova also retrieves his dagger and staff, replacing them where he carries them. With all the talk on tactics, Jova thins it good but never works. Since he had been with the group, only onr time had they the time to [repare ahead of time.

"Likke the temple of the Dread boys. I think more summoning helps us alot. Hovis, Unicorns are both good aligned and can heal right? They would be good in this type of sa fight. As far as the minions, I have seen Tratains power, and it is good. Hopefully it will be enough this time as well."

Planning Continues
Friday September 21st, 2007 12:00:13 PM

The group retrieves its weapons and equipment, and sits around the long table, sipping the last of the tea and discussing plans for the trials ahead.

The day moves on, and it is now about mid-morning.

-------------------------------------------
I'm going to let you all discuss and plan until you say you are ready to go.

By Monday, I need standard marching order, both for wide areas and single file. If I don't have something, I'll set it myself using general common sense (big guys in front and back, squishies in the middle, etc.).

Talk via email if needed so we can keep moving. The fun part is coming.

Still need co-ADM/posting reporter
Friday September 21st, 2007 12:01:48 PM

We really, really need someone to do the posting reports for awhile. Joe is quite busy, and Marcin and I don't want to be the DMs on the top of Jerry's bad DM list.

If anyone is willing to handle these reports, please speak up, here or email. Thanks.

Monthor
Friday September 21st, 2007 5:27:51 PM

I'll do it. Mondays right?

Arien
Sunday September 23rd, 2007 11:58:04 AM

Arien also retrieves his spell components and spends a moment making sure that they were all still usable. Arien turns to the conversation when Jova mentions Unicorns, "I do not believe in this case that a Unicorn would be that useful, they are not as powerful as the beasties that we are sure to be fighting. Perhaps elementals or other outsiders would work best."

Lumi-Juova
Sunday September 23rd, 2007 1:54:07 PM

"Still, the warleader needs to set up our movement into the city and where we will fight when the time comes."

"I feel I am the best at leading the group in, but will be flank or support attack behind Monthor's deadly axe in a fight."

Monday September 24th, 2007 9:12:03 AM

Sensing that the group is planning to go today, Vedic begins to make preparations to leave. He starts off uncertainly, but seems to find confidence as he continues.

After casting several spells, he begins to truly focus, concentrating on his cupped hands for several moments. A small drop of reddish brown liquid appears in his hands, and he swiftly, but reverently anoints his shield and armor.

He looks up and says simply "If we are to go today, I am ready."

Off to the City
Monday September 24th, 2007 10:42:23 AM

The group discusses tactics, and it is decided to begin moving out toward the city. Packing up, you make your final preparations and set off, walking down a hill toward the half-ruined walls of Fae Skiemer.

It is currently late morning, and it looks like you can reach the city within an hour and a half of easy walking, faster if you hurry.

Clearing the last of the trees, you find yourself on a field of short, brownish-green, sickly looking grass, much like that from the Valley of Humiliations. A soft breeze comes and goes as you march on toward the city.

Spot check DC 20 Highlight to display spoiler: { The grass doesn't move the slightest bit from the breeze, and you are leaving no footprints behind you.}

By noon, the bright sun overhead, and the lack of shade, has made it quite hot out. Nothin stirs in the field as you walk, and you hear no birds or other wildlife.

Spot check DC25 Highlight to display spoiler: { Looking up, your eyes glance at the top of the city wall just in time to see a few dark shapes disappear behind the wall. Keeping an eye out, you catch another shape, sometimes two, now and again. You see them out of the corner of your eye, but they always seem to disappear just as you focus on them.}

Lumi also protects himself from the elements (Endure Elements), and ensures the white owl, Tarhapollo, is nestled on his pillion before beginning the stalk.

The white tiger-taur takes the lead to scout the way to the elven city for his compaions. He keeps a sharp eye to the rear, ensuring that he can see Jova before turning back to the task at hand. (Listen:32, Spot:26)

"Ghost grass", he mentions to the others, pointing at the lack of movement or footprints in the sickly grasses. His black eyes spot the movement at the walls, but there is little to be done about it other than inform the Harmaa Ritari.

Instead, he looks for a breech in the walls to quickly move into the city. "We are doing this for others. Forr prrotecting those who cannot prrotect themselves." A slight rolling of his Rs reveals the wemic's nervousness.

Monday September 24th, 2007 7:48:39 PM

The absolute lack of visual or audio stimulation leaves Juliander a bit spooked. Being accustomed to the bustling city, and actual wilderness noises, he doesn't know quite what to think of the alien city, and so he remains silent himself, in anticipation of... anything.

Draax  d20+7=24
Monday September 24th, 2007 10:38:11 PM

Draax walks with the others, scanning the area for any immediate danger to the group. As he notices the weirdness of the grass, it reminds him that the environment might not react the way they are used to.

(spot check 24)

Tratain  d20+11=13
Tuesday September 25th, 2007 12:08:58 AM

Tratain marches along with the others. When informed of the movements near the City he says "Well somoene knows we are comming. Everyone keep an eye out and be ready for any danger. Lets not move in a straight line once we enter. It'll take us longer to get to our destination, but It might keep the odds of us getting attacked before we can spot someone to a minimum if we make some random turns."

Jova
Tuesday September 25th, 2007 2:15:24 AM

As the group leaves the safety of the old mans abode, Jova casts an extended mage armor upon himself. He also casts darkvision, also extended. Both spells should last a full day. He decides not to call upon his faithful steed though.

As the city comes into view, Jova makes sure his dagger is within reach. His staff slung over his back, is also in position for easy retrieval. Jova also sorts through his wands, making weach accessible. He does pull out the one that dispels magic, and holds it fitmly in left hand, ready to user at moments notice.

Arien  d4+16=17 d20+9=29 d20+9=10
Tuesday September 25th, 2007 2:27:09 AM

Before setting out Arien takes a moment to cast some spells. If the magic they carried on them was enough already to attract the attention of monsters a few more spells weren't going to make much difference.

As Arien casts his spells a mass of eye-like spheres come into being and the mage orders the eyes to establish a 400 foot perimeter around the party and to report back if they see any creatures that would be dangerous to the party. Arien watches a moment as the eyes depart to keep watch and shoulders his pack and is ready to go.

As they are walking Arien notices the odd behavior of the grass and being preoccupied trying to puzzle out what was happening that he fails to notice anything else.

At the Gates
Tuesday September 25th, 2007 8:00:30 PM

The party moves cautiously through the fields, preparing its defenses, magical and mundane.

Soon enough, you find yourselves a few dozen yards from the walls of Fae Skiemir. Stopping to examine your surroundings, you see that there are gates every so often along the wall. Or, more accurately, there are gate-shaped openings where actual gates were once likely housed. At irregular points, there are gaps in the crumbling wall sizable enough to move easily through and into the city.

There is a gate approximately 80 feet to your left. There are two holes in the wall 40 and 55 feet to your right, any of which will provide access into the city.

Arien's magical eyes probe into the city, looking for danger. A few come zipping back to the mage, alerting him to what they have seen: small, dark shapes flitting here and there in the shadows. A two-legged Something passing by in the distance. After reporting, they zip off to continue their perimeter scan.

Looking through the various holes in the walls, you can see what once was a city street, though now the stone lies cracked and crumbled, weeds and vines poking through in countless places. A dark, billowy smoke seems to fill the area inside the wall, though oddly, it does not come through the openings onto the field.

It is now almost an hour past high noon. The sun hangs high in the sky, and the breeze has gone away, leaving the air still, hot and dry.

Draax eyes the possible entrances to the city. "I say let's take the closest one to the right. We have no idea if their are any surprises at one or all of the entrances, so we might as well use the closest one. Unless someone has a better suggestion."

Jova
Wednesday September 26th, 2007 2:55:39 AM

Jova studies the wall intently. Like Draax, he beleives any entrance is as safe, dangerous as any other. Oddly enough he can hear Horvis behind him scenting the air.

So it looked like this was trully going to happen. Jova keeps an eye on Lumi up front for any indication of danger.
