Moridark stops with the others, "I can cast the mansion anywhere. It is a door on this side and I determine who can enter when the spell is cast. If we want to stand watch we have to either do it with the door open or step outside. " The mage casts the spell making sure there is space for all including companions, and a large bath.

He settles in, takes a bath, realises that that would be more fun as an otter.

Eventually he dries, reverts to human form, dresses and returns to the common room.

Armand goes into the mansion and sits and rests briefly. I think since we're inside this hidden place we can just do our normal watch inside the doorway. No need to go out of the mansion and watch."

He takes a quick bath and then rejoins the others. "I'm not sure what we've learned. There doesn't appear to be any sort of rhyme or reason to how they act. And the one's we've actually interacted with seem a bit off mentally."

Elyngael agrees with Armand. "Yeah I only thought we should do double watches if we didn't have your cool mansion to stay in Moridark." She shrugs her shoulders at 'Osul's question.

DM I'm assuming these were all types of fey we've never seen or heard of? Is there a knowledge roll the intelligent types can try?

The Mansion is cast, but it is more like a Garden. Inside, the "walls" are dense stands of bamboo that you cannot force your way through. The greenery covers the ceiling. the baths are hot springs and cool pools. The furniture are soft giant toadstools, the tables are huge cut tree trunks and fallen logs. The beds are comfy piles of moss. The servants are all leprechauns! They are eager to serve, though they do tend to giggle and sometimes stop work for a drink or a dance.

The party members talk about the creatures you met here in the deeper, darker Culverwood. The fey you have encountered today are rarer ones, known for trickery and even cruelty sometimes. But that's how many fey are, especially dark fey, and you have been moving into the dark.

When you awaken, you do find that your shoelaces are all in tight knots, there are burrs in your clothes, and ... evidently mice have been in your gear, based on chew marks and little mouse droppings. The leprechauns are all gone, too. But otherwise, you spent a restful night.

Following 'Osul's lead, the party heads out of the garden-mansion.

Outside, you see signs that small and medium two-legged creatures danced a circle into the forest floor in the night. The leaves and twigs are all smushed down, and you find seven dead frogs equally spaced around the circumference of the circle. There is no sign of whoever those dancers were.

On the far side of the circle, shadows deepen into the darkest pitch black that you have yet encountered.

Moridark feels sure that the deeper darkness past the fairy circle beckons the party on to an even deeper layer of the Culverwood. He casts a spell for flying.

His insight into this deeper darkness is in tune with Armand's intuition as well.

'Osul prepares by assuming his elemental form.

Trellus urges the party forward.

Elyngael and Brawn sense moss, mold, mushrooms, and ... darker scents.

Grindar finds no tracks per se. But the ground has been disturbed. By some mysterious force.

Past the circle, you make your way through the darkened area and get to what may be the heart of it. The roots thicken and rise; this is difficult terrain. The green plants are becoming rarer; black ones dominate. The canopy thickens and has no top -- it just goes on.

As the dark overruns the area. Itfs now considered total darkness -- not dim light any more. The plants slowly close in behind you, blocking the path you had followed. How do you navigate in the complete darkness?

Grindar is a little concerned for his friends without darkvision, but is glad to see Moridark cast dancing lights for them. Moridark casts dancing lights. The colored illuminations work as usual. This is a fine solution.

'Osul's darkvision also works well.

Grindar also has darkvision, so he's fine.

Armand's goggles of night, like natural darkvision, work fine.

Elyngael too.

But then Trellus takes out his Continual Light holy symbol. Immediately, the plants in the area, both on the ground as well as branches and vines in the trees, twist and move toward the bright white light, trying to cover it.

Everybody must make a reflex save against a DC20 entangle. Even if you save, this stacks with the normally difficult terrain, reducing you to quarter speed.

Without Trellus's magical white light, the plants calm down. Nonetheless, the terrain is tangled and difficult. And in the dark and dim, you have no longer any guidance as to the way to go. You cannot seek out a darker place ... this is it. But where will you head from here?

Most of the party pins their hopes on 'Osul's divination ... and they are rewarded.

The druid-air-elemental asks, using his speak with plants spell, this question: "Who speaks for the Darkness?" And they answer him!

Now, how does 'Osul communicate with the party while in elemental form? Maybe he and another party member speak the elemental air tongue? Or will he give up a change of form to revert back and share what he learns?

OOC - I wouldn't think that changing shape limits language use unless that creature cannot talk in the first place because of vocal chord structure, i.e. a dog couldn't talk no matter what. The air elemental descriptions states: "This cloud-like creature has dark hollows reminiscent of eyes and a mouth, and a howling wind whips it into ominous shapes."

'Osul relates the advice of the plants in Auran, not that it matters because the plants can understand everything he says. He also asks the Wardens if they have onther questions for the plants.

[OOC: I do not think you can speak common in an elemental form. Moot since Moridark can translate.]

'Osul communicates that the plants identify your enemies as the "Druids of Darkness," and indicate the way to go.

Elyngeal asks 'Osul to ask the plants how many there are. "They are not as many as there are trees," the answer comes back. [OOC: Honestly, not sure that trees really have a concept for numbers. What would they count?] But you learn that some trees are their servants.

The plants further tell 'Osul that the Dark Druids have the goal of spreading the Dark further into the daylit Culverwood, that they are mutating trees to do this, and that they seek to control the Culverwood with their spread.

The trees add that this deep in, few visit. Mostly fey, and lately, mostly dark fey, drawn to the shadows.

As you begin to travel as directed by the trees, the terrain remains difficult, the trees thick ... but you see more are twisted, and ooze black sap. These (when talked to) are glad that the darkness is spreading -- also, that they resent the presence of large amounts of metal in the party!

Important Note! The Speak with Plants spell lasts only minutes, and you have the strong sense that the trip will take hours, maybe days. Once you can no longer commune with the trees, you will surely, eventually, get lost in the dark. What's your plan to avoid that?

Elyngael is not sure about how to stay on track.

With favored terrain Forest, wouldn't survival work? It says DC 15 to keep from getting lost or avoid natural hazards, such as quicksand. If we use this shouldn't Grindar and I be able to keep a straight path and not circle back?

Survival check to stay on course: 44 ( Grindar also has favored terrain forest.) Also wouldn't woodland stride allow Osul, Elyngeal and Grindar to travel normally?

Note that travelling in these woods is difficult terrain, so, half speed. Note that the darkness makes that even more difficult, even for those with darkvision or other aid, such as dancing lights, so you are all moving at quarter speed overland. If everybody had woodland stride, I'd make that half speed, but unless you want to split up the party (a bad idea), it seems moot to the DM.

It is practically impossible to find your way through the dark dark woods. The standard DC for not losing your way in woods with poor visibility is a 20. When something is "practically impossible," add 20 to the DC. Thus, to navigate, you need to be able to see and you need to roll a 40 on a survival check. Per the rules, you need to make this check every hour.

For your first hour of movement, Elyngael is out of her depth, but Grindar is able to guide you.

As you wend your way through, picking around roots and trunks, you realize that the warnings the trees gave about carrying metal were NOT in jest. The trees sway, creak, and groan. In one dark dell, the woods collapse upon those wearing metal armor (including mithril).

Anyone in metal armor (Trellus, Grindar, Armand, Elyngael, I think?) must save vs collapse. You are all buried, without save. The DC15 reflex saving throw is to determine if you take 24 damage or 12. These people are all completely buried -- treat as pinned, with no way to take physical actions other than speech.

All other characters and companions, not wearing metal armor, please make DC15 Reflex saves as well. If you save, you are not buried and you take no damage. If you fail this save, you take 5 damage and are completely buried, like the others.

If you are wondering if you have "metal armor" ... well, if a druid can wear it, you are OK. If a druid cannot wear it, then you are in trouble!

As if this were not enough, you see odd ghostly shapes forming from the broken trunks that fell on you. They look like misty shadowy tree spirits. And they do not look friendly, although they are taking at least a round to form.

Please give me your saves and your actions for the first round.

TOP OF ROUND ONE:

The ENEMY: There is one tree spirit for each character in metal armor. That's Trellus, Grindar, Armand, and Elyngael. Each of them is buried and prone, and cannot use their dex or dodge bonuses to AC. The spirits are incorporeal, so most armor (except ghost touch armor) and natural AC bonuses also do not apply.

The spirits look something like medium-size ghostly treants.

Trellus's spirit hits touch AC31, a crit threat! Follows up with a confirm vs touch AC24. That's 7 str damage, or 8 if the crit confirms.

Grindar's spirit hits touch AC24 for 5 str damage [NOT! see below]

Armand's spirit hits touch AC20 for 6 str damage

Elyngael's spirit hits touch AC18 for 8 str damage [NOT! see below]

BUT WAIT! What about Armand's Divine Presence? Well, the saves rolled by the spirits were 25, 13, 25, and 12. So in fact, Trellus and Armand are hit, but NOT Grindar and Elyngael! Note to G and E -- per Sanctuary, if you attack, you lose your protection.

A buried person can make verbal and mental only actions, and use a full round action to bust out, as a DC25 str check. They cannot shift mass to get out.

Each buried person has 2,000 lbs of trunks, branches, and wood holding them down. That mass has to be shifted before they are free. Starting in Round One, each round, a non-buried helper can shift half your max str carrying load from a buried person. For example, in Round One, Brawn, a large quadruped with Str26, has a max carrying capacity of 2760 lbs, and so can shift half that (1,380 lbs) in a round. Acting alone, it will take Brawn two rounds to free his mistress. Shifting mass is a full round action that requires no rolls.

Also as a note for Moridark looking ahead ... regardless of your intention, you in fact summon a huge fire elemental to help you. It will act as you desire, but it IS a fire elemental.

1 - I was going to ask if the WARDD'S BLESSING (Fate Item tattoo) would work to delay the strength loss, but the write up seems to indicate a saving throw is involved and we're not getting those. If so then I was going to ask if we could retroactively use a pip for the first strength loss and use another pip for this strength loss.

2 - Armand made a knowledge religion roll of 33 on Wednesday to try and identify the spirit creatures to see if they were some form of undead, you never addressed that.

3 - Trellus, you can channel to heal or channel to harm undead, you can't do both at the same time.

...otherwise there's not much Armand can do right now.

Bottom of R2 -- still in progress: Brawn and Cotton will finish digging out Grindar and Elyngael, who will be able to act normally (though prone) if they delay* their action until after they are dug out. Trellus is thinking about channelling energy, but can repost a new action if desired (see below). Others are pondering what to do.

Other Topics:

To Trellus: Note that channeling energy requires that "a cleric must be able to present her holy symbol to use this ability." You would have to convince me that you can do that while buried ... I'm inclined to say no.

To Armand: Using a pip off your Ward's Blessing is a great idea. But yeah, it only works if there is a save involved, and the four people buried got no save. Also, it delays the onset of a condition, and strength damage, like hit point damage, is not a condition. Sorry.

To those wondering about the nature of these enemy beings. Are they undead? These spirits are to undead as plants are to humans. They are a unique thing created for this adventure, and they are similar to but not the same as undead. I allowed the Death Ward to halve the Str damage because that seems reasonable, but we're in uncharted, off the books terrain here, my friends. Hope that helps. I guess my advice would be ... try stuff, maybe it will work? Certainly they are hostile, for sure. And I am ruling that you can attack the attacking spirits without breaking the sanctuary ... but the sanctuary breaks if you attack the two who are not fighting. Does that sound reasonable? Kind of like Calm Emotions, I guess, seems to me.

So let's finish Round 2, with consideration for everything above. Post or repost your actions, change what you have already posted if you like, ask questions, make checks, have fun!

*Footnote: I say "delay" because in a face-to-face game you would delay your action until after your companion has acted. Brawn and Cotton will finish digging out Grindar and Elyngael, who are still prone.

Cotton's action for the round was digging out Grindar. Grindar's action is to stand from prone, take a five ft step over, and start to dig out Armand. He is able to shift 350 lbs of the 2,000 lbs of trunks and wood off his friend as a move action.

Armand studies these spirits and deduces that they are similar to undead but not exactly. Tree ghosts are unique to the deepest parts of magical forests, maybe, and no one has dealt with their like before. All bets are off, he tells his friends. But Armand's continuing Sanctuary and Ward effects are clearly helping.

Brawn digs out Elyngael, and then she stands up from prone. She looks around, using her darkvision, or the two Dancing Lights cantrips that have been cast. It is easy to see everyone in the party. Armand and Trellus are still buried, but Grindar has started digging out Armand. Elyngael sees the four tree spirits; two continue to attack Trellus and Armand, two are flying around, stymied by the Sanctuary. They are ghostly, and incorporeal.

'Osul changes into his mortal form and makes suggestions on how to fight. Then he changes into a Huge Earth Elemental, readying to dive in after any buried friends. He moves over and plans to dig out Trellus next round. [OOC: Hours have passed; those spells have expired.]

Trellus struggles uselessly against the press of the trees.

Moridark instructs the nymph to help free his friends and then tries to intimidate the spirits. Your roll was poor to do so, and even if I gave you an arbitrary +10 with the fire elemental, it would not suffice. The spirits ignore Moridark and the fire elemental, focused as they are on those who dare bring worked metal into the Deep Culverwood.

The Dryad answers Moridark: "I am too weak to move trunks, and I can shape but a pound at a time. But let me try to reason with one of these spirits." She speaks to the one attacking Armand in the language of plants. It answers her, and she says, "If this one (pointing to Armand) agrees to get rid of his armor, this spirit will relent."

That ends Round Two.

Top of Round Three:

Two spirits are affected by the Sanctuary, and will remain so if Armand, Grindar, and Elyngael take no offensive actions. Everyone else can attack freely, in case that was not clear.

The spirit that had been attacking Armand awaits his answer, and does not attack this round.

The fourth spirit attacks Trellus. It hits touch AC29 for 1 point of Str damage.

Moridark orders the fire elemental to stand between Trellus and the spirit in an attempt to provide cover. It does so, using the Aid Another action to give Trellus a +2 AC bonus.

Moridark asks the nymph to try and intercede again on the party's behalf. She looks at the tree spirit sternly.

After that, she turns to you and says, "These spirits cannot move away from their fallen trunks. Why don't you just run away?

Armand uses diplomacy to try to reach a resolution.

'Osul tries to restore Trellus with a Heal. That immediately restores all his lost Strength!

He and the Fire Elemental try to interpose to provide cover, but it is hard for that to work when the incorporeal spirit can fly underground and then reach up to attack from underneath.

Elyngael starts to pause in removing her armor. The spirits immediately grow angry. The DM assumes she resumes doffing her armor since Trellus was dug out last round.

Grindar offers to help Trellus remove his armor.

Trellus can act, and can post two rounds of actions in his next turn.

Round Six ...

Top of R6: The lone attacking spirit seems disturbed by what it sees in the nymph's eyes, and pauses. Two more spirits are at bay, and the other is watching you remove your armor.

The nymph tells Moridark, "You're welcome."

The armored heroes -- Grindar, Trellus, Armand, and Elyngael -- remove their armor, albeit with some reluctance here and there.

The spirits watch silently, not responding to anything else. When all the armors (and metal shields) are off and sent off plane via dimensional storage, the spirits fade away. The forest is dark and silent.

Moridark notices that while summons usually do away after a number of rounds, it has been a couple minutes and the fire elemental and the nymph are still present.
