A Walk in the Park

DM RobC - "So it sounds as though we may have to head into the fae realm."
Friday May 27th, 2022 2:23:20 AM

Osul and Moridark take to the air, while Elyngael and Brawn take point on the ground. The others follow along behind them.

Neshi wonders aloud why he hasn't heard from Eberyon. It's true, the sorcerer has meditated on the topic but perhaps some divinations would yield tangible results.

Armand plans to gate to their destination once inside the Culverwood. It's a very powerful spell (one of the most powerful there is!) and allows for transportation across different planes. Hopefully their destination is another plane. He's confident they will figure out where to go when they get closer.

Grindar is distracted by his visions and travels in silence. Cotton can sense her masters discomfort and nudges him for attention. Trellus keeps an eye on the pair to make sure they don't fall behind or head off in the wrong direction.

The journey to the edge of the Culverwood is entirely uneventful. Osul saw a few rabbits in the grass, a group of traders gave you a wide berth, and Brawn startled some birds. That was about all the excitement.

As you approach the edge of the Culverwood you notice it is different to the last time you came this way. The trees are closer together and the undergrowth thicker. Your way isn't completely blocked, but it will be more difficult.

As Cotton nudges him, with attempts to comfort him, Grindar is finally able to smile again. "Thank you friend!" the half-orc says as he reaches up to scratch her behind the ears, "You truly are the sun's shade."

As they approach the Culverwood, Grindar takes a look and says, "I fear this is going to be slow going, unless you non ranger and druid types have learned to use Woodland Stride. Turning to Elyngael he says, "I can take point from here. Having your bow guarding my tail is very comforting." To the rest of the Wardens he asks, "Are there any preparations we wish to make before heading in?"

Monday May 30th, 2022 3:38:00 AM

You stop by the edge of the Culver while you discuss different ways to proceed. Brightcrown and Karl are both mentioned as possible contacts to call on.

Grindar and Elyngael feel confident they could lead the way, or at least scout ahead and see how far in they can get.

Trellus waits for a 'woodsy' person to work out where to go. Moridark also waits. Armand clarifies what he said about Karl.

Osul flies ahead to look for a clearer path - or at least to see if things get any worse. Like the undergrowth, the canopy of the forest is thicker than you remember it. You can barely see the ground through it. What you notice though is that when you fly closer it eases. The leaves and twigs part a little allowing you a slightly clearer view. You can see there are no clear trails or paths. If there once was a trail there, the Culverwood has either moved it or concealed it. It will be tough going.

Through a little trial and error Osul notices that the forest is less obstructive within 15ft of him. When he moves further away though the leaves and branches regather and the canopy becomes thick again.

The party gather close to Osul and push on. As expected, the undergrowth gently parts and leaves turn away as Osul approaches them. If it weren't for the druid's bond with the Culverwood this journey would be significantly harder. Behind Osul the forest retakes it's dense appearance, virtually concealing the path you have taken. You struggle to see any sky above you as the canopy is just too thick.

Elyngael strays a little away from Osul to test things out. She finds she is still as perceptive as she usually is in a forest, so that's good (OOC: Favored terrain still works!). She does stumble over a tree root that popped up out of nowhere though. She's sure it wasn't there a second ago. It's like the tree did it intentionally to mess with her.
Knowl Religion DC20 / Knowl Nature DC20 / Sense Motive DC20: Highlight to display spoiler: {Based on that test you're pretty sure that the forest is treating Elyngael as 'unfriendly' and that her woodland stride ability is on the fritz}

The party head in the direction where you found Karl. It isn't too far, or at least it shouldn't be. The only trouble is the trees aren't where they were yesterday. Things are just different. In the space of a day the Culverwood has completely changed. What was it like the day before yesterday? What will it be like tomorrow? There is definitely something going on here.

Some dandelion seeds float in the air, circle each of you and then harmlessly disappear into the trees.

So how are the party travelling? There's a few large people, companions and phantom steeds to fit close to Osul.

Grindar repeats the test made by Elyngael to see what will happen to him. Like her, he finds that he is as sensitive to the forest as he has always been. Once outside the safety range from Osul, Grindar almost gets scratched in the face by some low hanging branches that seem to stick out in front of him as he passes close by. Despite his history in the forest, the Culver is also not treating him very kindly (ie: 'Unfriendly').

Both Armand and Elyngael want to mount Brawn but there's only enough room for one of them. Someone will have to walk. Had the ranger had enough time she could have prepared a Commune with Nature spell, but perhaps that will have to wait for tomorrow.

Moridark keeps flying over Osul's head, and Trellus tries to walk based on the directions given to him by Osul. Neshi takes to the left.

Osul forgets about the trees and tries leads the group based on what he remembers of the terrain but even that is different. The grassy mound that you walk over wasn't there yesterday, and that nearby cluster of rocks is also new. It's no wonder so many people get lost in the Culverwood. The whole area can suddenly change.
(What form is Osul in at the moment?)

He wonders whether these dark druids are being aided or hindered by the great forest. It's a very good question.

However they achieve it, the party find their way to Karl's now empty cage. The cage is lying on the ground and nowhere near the tree that used to hold it, but at least you have found it.

Osul isn't entirely lost. Sure, the trees and surrounds and completely unfamiliar, but he knows where they are relative to the Tree and has a fairly good approximation as to where the group are in the forest. He's confident that if the party wanted to leave the Culver he could safely direct them home.

Grindar offers anyone a ride on Cotton. Ever ridden a rapke before? Now's the chance.

Osul is exceptionally good at tracking, but the environment has completely changed to how it was yesterday. The trees are in different spots, the undergrowth is thicker, and there is no sign of the tree the cage was hanging from. There are no signs of footprints at all. Not even his own from less than 24hrs earlier. It really is like the cage was dropped to the ground and everything moved around it.

Elyngael is highly knowledgeable about forests and one of the first things she learnt was that trees just don't move on their own. Or at least they normally don't. She sees no trails, damaged bushes, broken twigs or such that would indicate how the surrounding trees made it to where they stand. She recalls that Armand's dream very specifically had treants and awakened trees fighting each other. Awakened trees would surely leave tracks, and there is no evidence of that here. That's probably a good thing.

Armand, Trellus and Moridark are all in favor of calling it a day. They're all of the opinion that it would be best to prepare some spells to cast tomorrow. Something that could provide magical guidance.

It's practically a done deal. The party will be settling in for the night and will cast some divinations tomorrow once you've had a chance to swap some spells out.

A number of potentials are discussed - Commune with Nature, Augury and Commune are just a few that are suggested. Practically everyone has some sort of divination spell that could be cast to help the party get a clearer direction on what to do. Except Moridark. He's prepared for pretty much everything else, though that Limited Wish spell certainly gives him a ton of options.

Osul casts a Liveoak spell on a nearby tree and comes up with some phrase to speak for when he intends to activate it into a treant. As the spell completes the tree 'shudders' and leaves gently fall to the ground.

Now there's just the matter of shelter for the night.

I'm not sure how safe the hammocks are. I have 1 wind walk spell ready which he can cast on Brawn to get up him up the tree.....not sure if Cotton can climb the tree or Brawn can pull him up?"

Legacy Item: On command, a seed appears in the palm of this glove, which must be planted immediately or else it is drawn back into the glove. When planted, a tree grows, exactly like a Tree Feather Token. Activating the glove, planting the seed, and growing it into a tree requires a standard action.

The tree can only be grown if there is 60 ft of open space into which it can grow, and if there is 20 ft of solid surface beneath it in which to root. That surface can be earth, stone, metal, ice, or any solid, but it cannot include empty or liquid-filled spaces. It is usually useless indoors or in a ship at sea, for example.

Over the course of the next ten minutes, a treehouse grows organically in the branches of the tree, 15 ft up, which acts like a Secure Shelter. A rope ladder falls down from the treehouse: It is a DC5 climb check to ascend the ladder as a full round action (faster if you have a climb speed). The ladder can be pulled up into the house. Several hammocks also appear in the tree, outside the shelter.

There's a bit more at the end of my character sheet.

The party decide to turn in for the night.

Armand manages to find 60ft of open space though it was very tricky to do so. It's hard to know if he'll be able to find an open area like this again in the Culverwood right now. The trees and scrub are tight and overgrown.

Osul brings his Liveoak to life in the form of a treant, and commands it to help people up into the treehouse. It does as asked, though a little slower than you'd expect. Still, it isn't too difficult for the living tree to lift Cotton and Brawn up into the treehouse.

Each caster then considers their spells for the next day, knowing that they're likely going to need some guidance or at least explanations as to what is going on.

It's in the middle of the second shift that night that things start to go a little weird. The whole tree (treehouse included) shakes! Those on watch can see that down below, Darach is attacking it with both arms. He roars and slams into it, time and time again. Chunks of wood splinter away as he attacks.

'Osul wakes up, resumes human form, makes his way to a window (okay, this may take more than one round) and demands (in Sylvan) that Darach stop slamming the treehouse tree and explain himself.
He looks carefully at both Darach and the treehouse tree, hoping that there is something on or around the treehouse tree that Darach is attacking.

If he doesn't hear or see the reason then he has to quickly decide whether or not to dispell the Liveoak spell.

Osul makes his way to the window and calls out to Darach for an explanation or to see if there is something else that may have triggered the treant's actions. Darach doesn't answer, save to roar and slam his clenched fists into the tree. Osul can't see anything out there that Darach would be attacking except for the tree. He has a quick decision to make - keep the spell, or end it.

Armand and Grindar both have their armor on and look out around. That treant is out of control.

Elyngael scans the area for any indication as to what's going on. There isn't anything else nearby that causes her concern. Just the big treant attacking the tree. With her goggles on, she is perceptive enough to notice black sap seeping from the wounds Darach is inflicting on himself from his bare-fisted assault. The tar-like substance oozes from the cracks appearing on his hands.

It doesn't stop him though. The treant keeps hammering away at the tree currently supporting the party.

Even though Durach can reach the tree house (he had to in order to help some of you in) Osul can clearly tell that his focus is on the tree and not any of you.

Armand calls for the group to wait so he can try and break whatever enchantment might be affecting the treant. Durach doesn't even so much as slow down once the spell is cast. Osul dismisses Darach just as easily as he was summoned. The treant stops moving and reverts back to a plain, old non-magical tree (or as non-magical as a tree can be in the Culverwood). There is still some black sap on the low-hanging branches, but other than that, the threat has been completely neutralized.

Trellus and Osul put out a few theories as to what just happened - the treant saw the treehouse-tree as an outsider, it attacked the tree because the tree was seen as a threat, or perhaps it just attacked for no reason?

Several vials of the black stuff are very carefully collected by Neshi and Osul safely cleans off what remains on the treehouse-tree.

Is the treehouse tree magical? Does it need repairs? Armand isn't sure. It's never been damaged before!

The party slum it out in the open air and outside the relative safety of the treehouse. It's an interesting experience sleeping in the Culverwood. You can hear animal sounds all around you. A pair of owls somewhere, a deep baying noise in the distance, and for some reason a toad croaking. You don't remember passing any bodies of water that it might inhabit.

The rest of the night is relatively uneventful. During the third shift a chestnut comes flying through the air and just misses Armand's head. You hear some high-pitched 'giggles' in the distance that quickly fade away. The fey that inhabit this forest are known to be pranksters - some good, some not-so-good.

Sleeping in the Culverwood is never dull.

The party wake refreshed in the morning with a few different spells prepped and ready to cast.

Neshi decides to mess around/experiment with the black tar-like substance. It sticks firmly to his claws and starts to slowly grow, and spread along them. The flame makes it a little runny but the cold hardens it and slows the spread. It's hard to say if the electricity did anything to it, but if it did, you can't see any difference. The magical water has no effect. At the end of the experiments, Neshi has a semi-firm dollop of black goop stuck to his claw.

Osul prepares a litany of spells tailored to today's possible explorations and divinations. Moridark prepares some spells, including some shelter should the party choose not to use the treehouse again.

Armand is the first to cast a spell and starts with a Divination. The response is a little cryptic: "You must go within to proceed. Only then will you find the cause of this taint"

Elyngael and Grindar take their time and cast a Commune with Nature spell. They block out all outside distractions and working together, they focus solely on the Culverwood, and what they can do to aid it.

The vision is almost identical to the one shown by Deeproot to Grindar yesterday. You see the Culverwood as you know it, but then everything changes just slightly, but enough to be noticeable.
There is no sun and the light is muted. The trees don't look as natural as they once did. Wherever you are you're pretty sure you're in the Wold anymore. The leaves on some of the trees are a healthy olive green, but others are turning darker and almost black. The blackness is spreading, and that black tar-like substance is part of it. It gathers in pools at the base of the trees and spreads outwards, growing and heading towards other trees. It won't be long until this entire area is covered.

The light shifts and again you find yourself somewhere else. As before, you're sure this isn't a place in the natural Wold - or at least one that no-one has recorded before. Here, the trees look old and you even see some pulling up roots to move about. Treants roam the forest and are attacking one another. Fey hide behind trees to watch the ongoing skirmishes.

The light shifts and this time you a forest of vibrant greens and full of life. A village of nymphs is happily working and at a play in a land untouched by outsiders or darkness.

This goes on for a while. Visions of light shifting and finding yourself somewhere else entirely. You're sure you're in the Culverwood, but have somehow travelled to different 'layers' or 'realms' or 'planes'. You're not sure what the right word for it is other than it's not of the natural Wold and not something you've heard or read of before.

At the spells completion it, well, doesn't complete. Elyngael and Grindar can feel that their spells have connected with the Culverwood in a way that they can continue to communicate with it. It may not be able to answer with words, but it may provide visions in answer to other questions. The duo can feel the strain on their bodies and minds though. This connection will not last indefinitely and the longer the connection is held, the greater the risk.

DM RobC - "How do we get to this other version of yourself?"

Armand suggests the group continue going into the Culverwood.

Trellus isn't sure to make of all this. Osul wonders if the Ents of the forest will be able to help and tries to locate them.

Elyngael wonders about asking some Fae for directions. Grindar opts to ask via the spell for how the group might get to where they need to go.

Moridark tries to recall anything about these different 'layers' of the Culverwood. What surprises him is that he doesn't come up with anything. Despite his extensive knowledge, he has never read or even heard of such things until now. By all accounts the party are the first of the noble races to learn of them and, if you find a way, you'd also be the first to ever go there!

Grindar and Elyngael receive several visions in response.

The first is a group of non-descript people chopping down trees, setting fire to nearby bushes, salting the ground, firing crossbow bolts at a fleeing dryad, and basically causing havoc. The Culverwood responds by drawing them in deeper, transporting them from the surface layer of the Culverwood to a different level.

The next is of a group tending to some injured deer. The group treat the animals wounds, feed them, and then send them on their way. The same group are then shown tending to the trees by watering them and casting spells on the dead branches to bring them back to life. Finally they are seen helping some pixies that were stuck in some strong webs. The Culverwood welcomes them and draws them in to another layer.

The final vision is of a small group of people positioned by a faerie circle. The group are sitting there peacefully within the circle of mushrooms, praying to the Culverwood and making humble offerings before requesting for the Culverwood to allow them to enter. The Culverwood responds by gently drawing them in to a deeper layer.

The spells fades and Elyngael and Grindar lose their connection.

"Thanks for the analysis Neshi. I wonder what, if any, affect that will have in dealing with these black goo trees and trents." Grindar says to his liontaur friend. To the rest of the Wardens he asks, "I must confess that this idea of the Culverwood having "layers" is difficult to weave my mind around, which leads me to ask, how do we travel to the different layers, and how do we know which layer we need to travel to? I don't believe this "layer" is the one causing the problems, but I'm without a clue as to which one is, and how to get there. In the final vision, the people were in a fairy circle praying to the Culverwood, and making offerings, and then the forest transported them. Maybe that is the key, but where do we find a fairy circle?"

Elyngael walks in a slow circle around the group. It's not a very wide circle mind you. She finds the forest still impedes her if she gets too far away from Osul.

The party are presented what appear to be three different ways to go 'deeper' into the Culverwood.

Grindar and Armand believe the best course of action would be to find a faerie circle and do the meditation thing. Trellus is in favor, and suggests that the Culver may help guide them to their location. This would be especially true if the Culver is in need and recognizes the party want to help. Finding an especially woodsy place shouldn't be too hard to do. Though the commune spell answered a number of questions it didn't provide an exact location of a faerie ring, but Elyngael knows their best bet of finding one is in an untouched area. That means further into the Culverwood and away from the outskirts.

Moridark still has that limited wish spell up his sleeve as a 'just in case'.

Neshi meanwhile has a bit of a mess on his hands. The goop is stuck to his claws and hasn't come off yet.

Other than that, it's just a matter of deciding which direction to go and to start moving.

DM RobC - "Let's go on a hunt!"

Neshi starts trying to get the goo off his hands. It's really tough stuff and is hard to remove. The strong tauric wine really helps (even if it is a waste of very good wine!), though he finds that by chilling the tar and making it solid it's a lot easier to then simply just chip away.

Grindar isn't at all keen on burning the forest and wants to leave that as a last resort. It does mean there are two other options available though.

Armand believes it was a fey that threw the acorn at him during the night, and if so, that could mean they are probably close to a faerie ring right now. It is the sort of place you'd imagine fae would be attracted to.

Armand calls out in High Woldian, as Osul encourages the group to say positive things in Common and Sylvan.

Osul has a clear direction on which way to go if the party want to find the Ents though isn't entirely sure on the distance to travel. He's pretty sure - like Elyngael - that faerie rings would be further towards the middle of the Culverwood - if there is one - and away from the outskirts where travellers might accidentally disturb them.

The druid takes on a dino form and starts to lead the party inwards.

The forest keeps treating Osul positively and keeps the overgrowth low within 15ft of him. There are times where it encroaches a on his left, pretty much steering him to head right. Trellus was correct in his earlier thinking - the Culverwood knows you're here to help and is acting a little as a guide.

Every now and then you can hear giggles and whispers in the distance, but they fade every time you draw near. Nothing leaps out at you and no further acorns are thrown. DinO-sul can smell the fey around, and he can be pretty sure they are there but he can't see them.

It takes a good two hours at this pace but finally the dense forest thins enough that you see the clearing ahead. In the centre is a circle of delicate red mushrooms, each some 6inches tall, nestled into the soft grass.

On the opposite side of the clearing - some 70ft away - are four huge plants, slowing moving towards the faerie ring from the other side. On seeing the party they stop and stand still. Osul, Elyngael and Grindar can see that same black tar dripping from their tendrils onto the grass, and the tree they have passed is also stained with the substance.

He singles for Cotton to be prepared in case they should want to fight, and both the Ranger and his companion ready an attack action, should the Sundews decide to attack first. Elynael readies her bow but doesn't fire just yet.

Moridark is a little suspicious and prepares to cast a spell (Highlight to display spoiler: {For a readied action you need to specify the spell})

Osul isn't here to talk and wants to protect those mushrooms as best he can. They can sort things out afterwards if need be. Besides, this faerie ring might be their only chance to get deeper into the Culverwood and he can't risk losing it. He moves up and casts a spell on the plants on the opposite side of the rings to Grindar. Both plants pause in their tracks as Osul seizes control of them.

It's a very effective tactic. Two of the plants are now under his control.

Osul doesn't have time to celebrate though. He feels a sharp and sudden pain in his head, and it feels like his brain is going to explode. (Osul to make a Will Save vs DC22. Fail=82pts damage + exhausted and stunned. Pass=41pts damage)

The non-controlled Giant Mildew have long reach and are able to attack Grindar and Cotton without getting in range for them to fight back.

The first sundew reaches out and wraps it's tendrils around Grindar! (Hit AC51. Nat20. Crit confirmed on AC48. Hit AC42. Grindar takes 45pts damage + 8pts acid damage and is grappled!). It pulls him in close and squeezes him tightly. The black tar mixed with the plants natural adhesive makes for a very sticky situation and Grindar is going to have to fight hard to get free. (CMD to escape: 51. Please make DC26 Ref saves with any attack you or Cotton make ).

The second sundew wants to feast on the half-orc as well. It can't get a hold of him, but does get a taste of him. (Hit AC45. Miss AC35. Grindar takes 16pts damage + 2pts acid damage!)

Despite not being hit, Cotton feels a tingling sensation in her head. (Cotton to make a Will Save vs DC19. Fail=Attack Grindar to the best of her ability!)

Elyngael's readied attack is triggered.

Black sap drips from the plant creatures onto the grass around them.

Grindar is all kinds of stuck. He manages to attack with his dagger but then needs to release it. Cotton sinks her teeth deep into the plant and gets a mouth full of tar for her effort. Her jaws are now firmly held in place. (Cotton will need to make a DC20 Str check - std action - to remove her mouth from the plant)

Osul directs his two plants to remove themselves from the battle and then he backs up as well in human form. He relays what he knows of these creatures, but he can already tell that these ones are more advanced than the ones he knows of.

Elyngael fires a number of arrows at the nearest plant. She notices her electrical damage doesn't do anything, they're not evil, and they are frustratingly resistant to her arrows. Brawn covers the rear of the party in case something sneaks up behind you.

Armand gets into a better position - quickly - and casts a searing light at the other plant. It's a good shot and does the sort of damage he'd expect to a living plant creature.

Neshi gets into a better position and casts a lightning bolt at the two plants - somehow missing Grindar and Cotton who are both held fast. The plants dodge some of the ligtning, and what they don't dodge doesn't draw as much 'blood' as he thought it would.

The grassy area is no trouble for Trellus. He finds himself able to move quite freely. He bolsters his own protection then follows up with a Searing Light spell. He must have been a little distracted as his aim is just slightly off and he misses his target.

Moridark begins casting... something? Very mysterious.

Osul heals up his wounds. Based on what is happening to the others, it's not his proximity to the black stuff that's causing him pain and the sundews look occupied with the rest of the party. Something else is attacking him.

Grindar draws another dagger and slashes at the plant again. Cotton meanwhile is able to pull herself free.

Armand has had enough messing around and tries to blow up one of the plants from the inside. He watches with anticipation to see what will happen, but unfortunately it's not enough. The plant resists the spell.

Trellus charges into the fray and hacks at the plant, chopping away some of the smaller tendrils. (Trellus to make a DC26 Ref save or have your weapon stuck to the creature and unable to be used. DC20 Str check as a standard action to free it)

If plants could groan, this one probably would. A lot of it has been hacked away and a burst of pollen erupts from the fresh cut made by Trellus covering everything in a 20ft radius. (Trellus, Grindar, and Cotton to make DC26 Fort Saves. Fail=6pts Int Damage and Staggered for 4rnds. This is a poison effect)

Neshi decides it's a good time to prune back some of those other plants. They may be controlled but they aren't helpless. Both make their saves and only take minor damage - even less fire damage than they should have.

Moridark finishes his summoning spell and brings a roc into existence. The huge bird-like creature slashes at the plant with it's massive talons. (Roc to make 2 DC26 Ref Saves. Each fail is a talon stuck to the plant. DC20 Str check as a standard action to free one). The wizard quickly casts a Protection spell on Osul, just in case.

Elyngael is disheartened. Her arrows were able to damage the plants, just not to the extent she's used to. She ponders the situation.

The enemy act...

The plant gripping Grindar constricts its tendrils around him. (Grindar takes 19pts + 4pts acid. I think you may have missed the damage from June 17th in your totals). It maintains a hold on his body.

The second plant attacks Cotton! (Miss AC35. Hit AC49. Cotton takes 20pts damage + 3pts acid). It's tendrils are thick and sticky, and wrap around the rapke. (Cotton is grappled! CMD to escape: 51)

The other plants take no action and keep their distance as directed by Osul. Osul feels no further head pain, but Cotton still feels herself being drawn to other actions. (Cotton to make a Will Save vs DC19. Fail=Take no actions)

Grindar's body goes limp. He should be dead, but his heart refuses to stop beating. Half-orcs are known to be quite stubborn creatures. Cotton sinks her teeth into the plant that has a hold of her. If it wants to eat her she's not going down without a fight.

Neshi lets loose with a Cone of Cold spell, catching 3 of the plant critters AND the sickly looking tree. He follows up with a Polar Ray on the Plant grappling Cotton but his shot goes wide. A crack appears on the truck of the tree. The black tar seeps from the cut and starts to run down the trunk.

Grindar gets a chance to breath again. He blacked out for a little bit there, but his friends made sure he didn't end up with Gargul. Cotton rips her teeth free from the plant creature.

Elyngael unloads a barrage of arrows but she's just not having a good day. All her arrows sail harmlessly over the plants.

Trellus loses his grip on his sword, but fortunately the plant is unable to grip him! That Ring of Freedom of Movement was a great investment. He's unable to pry his sword free this round.

Neshi feels the mental attack but is able to shrug off most of it. He's worried it might be the faerie ring that is causing these mysterious attacks so calls out to it in a gesture of peace. His grasping hand spell is unable to get a grip on the plant.

The roc is stuck firmly in place. Moridark helps to buff up Grindar as a precaution, and then hastens the party. That oughta help the fighters!

Osul starts summoning a Storm Giant! It's going to get crowded over there soon.

Armand brings Grindar back to full health. He uses the quicken rod to cast True Seeing and looks about. That's when he sees it. That sickly looking tree isn't a tree. It's a creature that is hiding as a tree!

It first tries to interrupt Osul's casting! The druid feels that familiar pain in his head again. (Osul to make a Will Save vs DC22. Fail=68pts damage + exhausted and stunned. Pass=34pts damage)

It then turns and points towards those in the party gathered to the west. The ground in that area gets covered in a thick blanket of toxic moss! (Moridark, Armand, Grindar, and Neshi are entangled, sickened, and must make a DC30 Fort Save or take 3pts Con damage! The sickened effect and Con damage are poison effects)

Finally, it looks towards the two plant creatures that Osul had under control. The plants start moving! One heads westward while the other moves south.

Osul can tell right away that at some point those plants were subjected to another Control Plants spell.

Armand moves southward out of the zone of poison. He then cast's Earthquake (red circle) 80 foot radius. Open Ground: Each creature standing in the area must make a DC 15 Reflex save or fall down. The mage orders the roc to attack the caster as it seems to be the root of all thier problems. Moridark uses 15 feet of his dimensional steps to get clear of the entangle, and whistels for his phantom steed. The mage looks toward the tree/monster and attempts to identify it (Arcana 50, Nature 44) Moridark will mount his steed when it arrives.

The roc manages to pull free from the plant (Strength DC29)and redirects it's attention to the caster. The roc slices at the caster with both talons (DC32 Damage 14, DC 28 Damage 21) and bites at the caster again (DC 21 Damage 25)

Grindar leaps back into the action. Was Cyrchwr Mawr still stuck in the tar when Grindar collapsed? It doesn't matter. The half-orc still has it with him and makes his attack. And what an attack it is! He cuts the plant in two. He still feels sick and probably will unable someone cures him of the poison.

Cotton digs her teeth into the plant attacking her! It's a vicious bite, but it provokes a response from the plant as a burst of pollen erupts from it. (Cotton and Neshi to make DC26 Fortitude saves or take 3 points of Intelligence damage and be staggered for 1 round. This is a poison effect.)

Neshi makes his way through the entangled area (Evasion doesn't help here) and blips himself and Cotton to safety.

Armand feels the poison course through his veins but doesn't have time to worry about it now. His Freedom of Movement easily allows him to step out of the mossy area. He fires back with an Earthquake spell and follows it up with a blade barrier. The ground shakes but the plants all keep their feet firmly 'planted'. No fissures open near them. They frustratingly then step aside from the blade barrier as it is cast. (All Ref Saves passed)

With plant #1 down, Elyngael plugs some arrows into plant #4.

Osul wanders southward and turns into an Air Elemental to get some better maneuverability. He orders the plants to head north as far as they can. They shuffle away from the fight. (Cha check to control them next round: DC13)

Moridark's roc pulls itself free and flies towards the caster, unable to attack this time. Moridark blips out of the toxic moss and calls for his magical steed. He intends to mount it next round also.

Armand and Elyngael aren't quite sure what to make of the mosslord. Mordiark knows that typically:
- They have a lot of spell-like abilities and don't cast spells
- They are immune to fire, mind-affecting effects, paralysis, poison, polymorph, sleep, and stun
- They are resistant to Electricity
- Cold damage can stop their regeneration
- They are both extremely strong and intelligent

Plant #1 is dead, but it's sticky, rotting fronds will take some time to decay. Elyngael knows that when they die it can take around 30seconds before they are no longer adhesive.

Plant #2 steps around it and attack Trellus! (Hit AC49. Trellus takes 16pts damage + 3pts acid)

Plants #3 and #4 have obediently made themselves scarce.

The mosslord concentrates on a spell (Neshi to make a Will Save vs DC22. Fail=62pts damage + exhausted and stunned. Pass=31pts damage). It stays close to the blade barrier.

Osul creates a sudden flash of light up north. (Highlight to display spoiler: {"The default shape for a burst effect is a sphere". The thick trees would probably provide total cover to anyone more than a few feet away, but figure you guys need this one!}). The sundews all look affected by it, but the mosslord still has fight in him. The roc is also caught in the bright flash of light! (Roc to make a Ref Save vs DC33. Fail=24 dmg + blinded. Pass=12dmg)

Grindar has Cotton fall back. The ranger wants to stay in the fight though so draws in close and hurls a javelin at the mossman. The spinning blades provide cover though, and changes the trajectory of the javelin such that it misses its intended target.

Armand's Destruction spell has better success and damages the mossman a little.

Neshi feels the spell his him, and suspects that nothing will protect him from them. (Highlight to display spoiler: {It's an autopass on beating SR18}). He tries to get his magical hand to shove the mosslord into the blade barrier but it isn't strong enough. He then tries a more powerful spell: a Power Word Stun! On most targets it would be very, very, effective. The mossman seems unaffected though.

Moridark has the answer and calls out that it's immune to stunning effects. The mage jumps aboard his invisible steed and gets some height.

Elyngael keeps up her attack on sundew #2 (since #1 is dead). She's ready to remove the poison from any of her allies if they want it.

Trellus steps back the flower and takes a moment to treat his wounds.

The roc attacks with beak and talons, but isn't able to get past the mossman's defenses. (Highlight to display spoiler: {If a talon hits, please roll your grapple check for the grab})

Osul keeps control of the plants and keeps them moving up north. (Cha check to direct them next round: DC26)

Not a great round for our heroes.

The enemy act...

Plant #1 continues to slowly rot

Plant #2 is blind and can't detect Mordiark. Trellus is quite far away. Next closest target that it can locate? Grindar! Despite being blind it is able to find him. (Hit AC45. Grindar takes 39pts dmg + 3pts acid and is grappled! CMD:51)

Moridark, Elyngael and Osul realise that the sundews probably have tremorsense, so while a person is touching the ground the plants will be able to find them. At least if you're close enough. If they're blind and you're not touching the ground though... that would be interesting.

Plant #3 and #4 follow Osul's orders and keep heading north as best they can.

The mossman doesn't let up on Neshi though. (Neshi to make a Will Save vs DC22. Fail=81pts damage + exhausted and stunned. Pass=40pts damage). (Highlight to display spoiler: {If you use hero points to stay alive you're at -23 but stable})

Moridark casts slow on the mossman but its saves are just too good. He lets the others know of the sundews having tremorsense, but it may not be relevant any more. The roc is hurt and blind.

Osul loses control of the two, blind plants that went north. He has more important things to worry about though and flies down to heal Neshi's wounds.

Neshi has had enough and casts not one, but two cones of cold into the battle. The mossman can't dodge all of it and takes some damage from the cold. Damage that temporarily stops its regeneration.

The enemy act...

The mossman returns fire by throwing a sheet of moss around Neshi! (Neshi is entangled, sickened, and must make a DC30 Fort Save or take 4pts Con damage! The sickened effect and Con damage are poison effects)

It then targets Osul with some mind pain. (Osul to make a Will Save vs DC22. Fail=77pts damage + exhausted and stunned. Pass=38pts damage).

Osul leaps in and casts a Freedom of Movement spell on Neshi to free him from it though.

Armand meanwhile channels enough energy to heal the group up a little.

Trellus is too frustrated by his sword that he decides to go back for it later. For now, he launches into the air and readies his bow.

Elyngael maneuvers around the wall a little more and gets a clear line of sight on the mosslord. Her arrow makes its mark.

Moridark dismissed the roc as his frost giant appears on scene. The young giant hacks away with its axe.

Grindar's head feels like it is going to explode! There's nothing he can do but wait for the pain to subside.

Armand burns it up with a searing light spell. He's already planning a picnic for when this is all over.

Trellus calls out for Grindar to hold out a little longer and flies to wards the ranger as fast as he can.

Elyngael maneuvers to get a better position. Between the cloud of spores and the spinning blades it's hard to get a clear shot.

Neshi gets serious and casts a Blight spell on the mosslord. It's a pretty tough creature though and shrugs off some of the hurt.

Moridark's summons get to work, but don't have a lot of luck. Both attacks of the giant miss and the dino's tail goes wide. (Highlight to display spoiler: {I know you said 25ft north, but it only has 15ft reach I think. I've made it so it can reach the mosslord. Just curious, what sort of range does Moridark have with his summon spells?}). He doesn't think there's any sort of symbiotic relationship between the mossman and the moss that's shriveling. Best bet is that it shrivels up and dies on its own as it loses potency.

Osul is pretty confident the mosslord is done and heads towards the faerie circle.

Unfortunately it isn't dead yet!

The mossman tries to put Grindar down for good. (Grindar to make a Will Save vs DC22. Fail=88pts damage + exhausted and stunned. Pass=44pts damage!).

The party give it all they have to bring the mosslord down, but despite the efforts of Trellus, Elyngael and the Frost Giant it refuses to die! It's only the powerful tail of the Ankylosaurus that finally kills it (just!).

There are no signs of the other plants that Osul directed to go north. Chances are they will follow that order until his spell ends, and blinded they're not going to cause much trouble for anyone.

The remaining sundew is no longer sticky, allowing Trellus to fetch it if he chooses.

The forest is quiet again. All you can hear are the whirling blades of the blade barrier spells.

The group congratulate each other on their successful battle. The creatures that you're facing are getting tougher and tougher. It's like the Wold knows that the party are the only ones capable of dealing with monsters like these so is sending them all your way.

Tactics are reviewed and discussed, and plans for future encounters are made. A Breath of Life spell (or two or three) does sound like a good investment, and you can't discount having some very powerful healers nearby.

The blade barrier spells are easily dismissed and Armand finally gets a chance to have his picnic with his friends :)

Trellus goes to retrieve his sword from the not-so-sticky sundew. As he pulls it free he notices some other items mixed in with the black tar. It's likely the belongings of some other poor folk that encountered these plants not too long ago. Hopefully they were able to escape and didn't end up as fertilizer.

Grindar does some curing.

Neshi plays with the weasel.

Trellus discerns and then retrieves a number of "goodies," The loot is listed below.

Elyngael scouts around and detects a trail of the black stuff that leads off ... in a direction that may be "deeper" into the Culverwood. Your intuition suggests that it leads to the place in which you may wish to try the ritual. The "faerie circle."

'Osul keeps a keen eye open but detects no threats. On watch, pondering plant monsters, it is easy to recall examples of sessile creatures using camo and bait to attract prey. Indeed, the loot pile speaks to the efficacy of this tactic for plant monsters.

Armand suggests taking a rest. He and Moridark scan the items and area for magic [OOC: All those listed below are magical. It seems that only potent magic items were able to resist the digestive juices of the caustic plant.]

While the work of loot evaluation continues, the party enjoys a Heroes Feast and at least a short rest. BUt since this is not 5E, a long rest will be necessary to truly refresh you heroes. :-)

LOOT:

A hero point to Trellus for his insight ... and speaking of Communing, the DM awaits 'Osul's three topic areas.

OOC: I've been seeing these duplicate posts in other places in the Wold. On this board, I've started deleting duplicates when I see them.

Moridark shakes his head a bit at the flickering, and furrows his brow, (Knowledge Arcana 43, Knowledge Planes 51), "It kind of reminds me of the way multiple abjurations in the same area interact. Energy fluctuations, and resonance here with some other planar conditions. Regardless we should be safe." The mage enters, and after making sure everyone is settled finds a bath, followed by a bed.

Grindar enters the magical mansion with his friends, and gets a good nights sleep, ans well as a bath. He joins his friend the next morning. "That is a good question Elyngael, who do we activate the ring" Grindar tries to remember any details from his visions that might give some insight as to how to activate the fairy ring.

The Farie Circle (DM Cayzle)

In the morning, daylight comes in green, filtered by the canopy above. You cannot actually see the sky or sun. The circle is still there, waiting. What preparations do you make, and then what do you do?

Might I suggest permission to enter and the all step in at the same time. If that doesn’t work I guess we try opening a dimension door.

Don’t forget we don’t want to eat or drink anything that is from the faerie world.

"Everything looks okay. I think we need to enter. I agree with Neshi we do it at the same time. Maybe 'Osul does some higher meditating or something?" Armand gathers all his gear. "I'm not sure plane shift will work. I'd need to know where I'm going to pull off that spell. Also I had a thought, I'm wondering if summoning spells are going to be affected in the deeper Culverwood. You know like how Moridark's mansion sort of flickered before becoming stable."

Elyngael and Brawn come out of the mansion. I"m not sure Commune will work, I have to ready again, but it didn't seem to work great. Somehow 'Osul has a better connection with the Culverwood. I think he needs to take the lead on this."

Moridark wakes early to bathe again. The mage then returns to his chamber to prepare spells, and relax before the others wake. Moridark listens to the conversation and sighs, ”I hope my conjugation spells are not affected. They are my bread and butter. If we are unsure how the ring may work I can cast a low level conjuring spell and have that creatures enter the ring first.

The Farie Circle (DM Cayzle)
Tuesday July 19th, 2022 11:54:31 PM

[OOC: I had intended to get a post up 7/19, but I dropped the ball. Sorry. This is going live 7/20 evening.]

How does one enter a trans-planar faerie circle?

Neshi suggests the party just step in all at the same time.

Armand agrees. Casting spells might well backfire!

Elyngael thinks 'Osul is the natural leader here -- "natural" in both senses of the word.

Moridark suggests sending in summoned creatures to try first.

Don't really know if his character has extra knowledge, and never played a druid before.

'Osul will direct everyone into the faery circle. "Think peaceful thoughts." He tells everyone. "I'll first try meditating and beseaching the Culverwood. Then I'll try a Commune with nature spell if that doesn't work. But try to think of wanting to help the Culverwood."

Once everyone is in 'Osul will attempt to meditate and silently offer up prayer to the Culverwood and tell it they are here to help.
