The party has attended to errands, training, shopping, and just relaxing. A couple weeks have gone by.
One day, the local leader of the WLA, a lady named Jinn, sends a request for a meeting. I assume there is no problem, especially since several of you are members. At the agreed on time, she arrives, and she has a friend with her.
Jinn is in her dress leathers, studded leather, actually, and has her WLA pin displayed prominently.
The man with her is fit and scarred. He has clearly been in some mix-ups in his day. The middle aged fellow is also extremely well dressed, both in tailoring and in wealth displayed. He is clearly comfortable walking around with that sword he has at his side.
Jinn introduces him as Theodore Dunkann, a leader in the Society of Chancers.
After pleasantries, she gets down to it. "We want to hold a tourney. Recruitment has been very slow of late. We think this will build a lot of interest. The WLA is the host. The Chancers are the sponsors. They will be betting on the outcomes, and fundiung the prizes -- two paid memberships in the WLA."
"We're appealing to you because if you are associated with the event, then others will respect it and be even more interested. Your help would be incredible."
She pauses to take a sip of the drink you have offered her -- giving you a chance to ask questions.

In the intervening fortnight, 'Osul looks to visit the chapel and get Lilliput's take on the departure of the moneychangers and the change in the mood and outlook of the residents. She as much as anyone has a measure of this pulse.
'Osul has the money to get the Dragon hide made, assuming standard prices apply, but not for the Energy Resistance. And he does use the red dragon skin, and keeps a smaller whiite and red scale in his component pouch.
The idea of a tourney is novel. 'Osul asks if they are Adventurer (Initiate) dues only, or lifetime dues for the individuals. Though, to be fair, this is the first time 'Osul has heard of the Chancers Club being active in the community since the situation surrounding Gaston that had reached a head just prior to his arrival at the tree. The facts that none of the remaining Wardens would recall that time, and Theodore remaining incredibly, blandly quiet, both play on his mind.

As he's not a member of the WLA he is only slightly interested, however, he knows a few of the Wardens are members. He studies the man trying to place him from the name given. He asks Jinn, "Do you mean recruitment has been low around the Tree or overall through out the Wold? I would ask Miles to join the conversation, I mean he is head of security at the Tree. Maybe he could use this as a recruiting drive as well or maybe even just a training program for his guards."

The WLA leader is quick to reassure the Wardens. "I too was wary of the entire endeavor, but when I learned more, I saw the real value to it."
The Chancer representative steps forward with details. "The tourney will consist of a number of rounds. Every round, each of you will be paired in a contest with a contestant. When a contestant wins a round against you, he or she gets a point. The contestant with the most points wins the tourney."
Jinn speaks up. "The idea is to encourage less experienced people watching that the WLA is a place that treats everybody equally, where adventurers are trained, and where heros are happy to help out."
Grindar seems unhappy with any action less than fighting pure evil. "I admire your outlook," says Jinn, "but encouraging and teaching the young, and giving them opportunities to excel, is that also not worthy?"
Theodore answers 'Osul, telling him that only the first level of membership is being offered.
Elyngael asks about advertising, judging, and designing the tourney challenges. She is assured that the only ads are for the WLA, a worthy and noble cause. The party will not have to judge or design the challenges.
Jinn tells Armand that the WLA brance here is new, and recruitment has been slow locally. She hopes that this will build local enthusiasm.
Neshi does not want to seem frivolous. Jinn replies, "Helping build the reputation of the WLA is not frivolous, sir," she says, a bit defiantly. All the gambling would be behind the scenes, among the Chancers, not in the stands.
Jinn is not sure what Moridark is asking, but she assures him that this is all on the up and up.
Those with a modicum of Sense Motive can tell that Jinn is dismayed by the group;s suspicions and reluctance. She makes her heartfelt pitch. "Truly, the purpose of this is to build recognition, light a fire of excitement about the WLA, build public confidence in the organization, and, sure, have some fun. I do not think that you heros burnishing your reputations and showing off as part of the community would be a bad thing, considering recent events. What do you say? Please do us this good deed?"

Armand scratches his head and says to Jinn, "I'm still not sure how we can be of value in any sort of contest if you're wanting to recruit brand new members. Frankly we outclass many of the locals at various skill sets and it seems such a tourney based contest would be one sided? Are you thinking of bringing in some outside champions? Another thing is that quite frankly several of us are not really good at the whole melee combat thing. We're very spell heavy in the Wardens and I'm not sure how any sort of tournament based contest would work in that regard."
He turns to Theodore, "Excuse me I seem to be drawing a blank, could you tell me what the Society of Chancers is about?"

Theodore steps up to tell Armand and you all that the Chancers are a group of gentleman (and gentlelady) seekers after the thrill of life. "We celebrate all manner of living one's life to its fullest. We are explorers, swashbucklers, and romantics. We encourage people to give it their all."
Jinn says, "Be that as it may, we have found seven people who wish to join the WLA, but cannot afford it. So we are glad to give them the chance to compete. The Chancers will pay for two to join."
She says that there will be seven rounds. Each round, the challengers will meet the seven Wardens in a one on one contest. None of the challenges includes combat, Grindar. If the challenger defeats the Warden, they get a point. Whoever gets the most points is the winner.
Theodore steps in before Jinn can reveal a specific challenge. "These are simple tasks. Here are some examples, none of which are actual challenges, but they give a feel for them: Climb a rope. Ride a bucking bronco. Tell a story. Juggle balls. Things like that." He hopes that Elyngael will be satisfied with these examples.
"Chasing pigs through mud," muses Theodore to 'Osul. "Hmmm ..." He winks at the druid.
"Trellus, you seem convinced," Jinn says. "The rest of you? It is for a worthy cause ..."

"I've got the publicity covered. We'll be ready in five days." He asks you to show up in an open field near the Tree on the road.

The day of the tournament dawns bright and with clear skies. The community has been buzzing with excitement over the event. The Chancer evidently paid to use a patch of pasture, but the land has been transformed. There are stands set up, stalls for food and games and souvenirs, and even some musicians and tumblers working the crowd.
The WLA has set up a tent, where they are talking up the organization to everybody who comes by. In the back of the tent there's a private area where the Wardens and contestants have a chance to meet.
Jinn introduces them to you, and you to them. They are: Urist the Smith (a dwarf) Captain Relondar of the Emerald City Guard (an elf) Sister Lauren (a half-elf) Sir Brom Thymol Blue (a gnome) Eric the Ranger (a human) Ruby Rouge (a human) Doris the Divine (a human)
They are all pretty tongue-tied around you Wardens, except the dwarf, who offers a calloused hand and declares, in pretty off-color language, that it's a goram-blasted honor to meet ya.
"But that don't mean I'm taking it easy on ya!" he adds.

Armand spends a few days with Miles. Basically he wants to make sure that the guards, while on light duty, are vigilant. The last time there was an event at the Tree, was a circus, which turned out to be run by a necromancer that had an undead horde hidden and a monstrous creation as well. Many Tree residents were killed in that surprise attack and many families sundered. The time before that there was an open air fair going on when several caravans had arrived at the same time. And that event was attacked by a band of awakened apes with a grudge against humanity.
He will also use one day at the local Sages Guild to research Theodore Dunkann. He wants to know a bit about the man's history. He is a bit of a dichotomy. As he appears to be well trained in the warriors arts, but dresses better than the most prosperous bard. OOC not sure which knowledge to roll, rolled on nobility last time, Sages Guild lets me auto a 30 on one knowledge roll.
Armand shakes the dwarf's hand. "Pleased to meet you." He then speaks to the other contestants. "Good luck to you all."

'Osul is looking forward to hearing what contest he is assigned.
He already has an idea for the end of the day. In less busy moments he raises the idea individually with each Warden (and in no particular order) - this could be the inaugural annual event, so wouldn't it be wonderful if this time there were no losers - barring the discovery of any cads or the like?

Neshi spend the five days checking on the tree and heads out to check on the sapling as well and even does a bit of meditating and spending time out in nature just giving thanks to the gods and to his patron Eberyon. The introductions come about and Neshi makes his way into the tent to meet the contestants. As Grindar about them just being people, Neshi chuckles and it comes out more as a lion like cough/chuff.
"Well, at least I don't bite often, as forrr being a people I guess that is trrrue in a sense, Just not humanoid people.."

Armand discovers that Theodore is of noble birth, but also an experienced adventurer in his younger days. He likes to gamble, and his father and his grandmother are bigwigs in the Chancer executive committee. You learn that he has a magic item to "broadcast" the tourney to viewers in Plateau City in real time. He seems to be what he says he is.
Grindar and 'Osul make the contestants feel at ease. They deduce or discover the following ... Urist the Smith (a dwarf) -- is likely a warrior with lots of craft skills, or maybe an expert. Captain Relondar of the Emerald City Guard (an elf) - a soldier and experienced leader of warriors. Sister Lauren (a half-elf) a cleric, honoring Alemi Sir Brom Thymol Blue (a gnome) A paladin of Flower. Eric the Ranger (a human) He is quiet. Not much to say. Says he left his animal pal at home. Ruby Rouge (a human) Clearly a rogue or scout. Doris the Divine (a human) A wizard specializing in divinations.
They seem to be in the level 4-6 range.
Elyngael finds nothing amiss around the festivities. The prices are fair, and games are not rigged. The entertainers are top-notch. Everyone seems to be having a good time.
Neshi and Moridark find a chance to banter.
Trellus and 'Osul have a quiet conversation. Generous and clever, 'Osul has already thought that everybody should get to join the WLA.

The event begins. The open field is set up with seven tables, and two chairs per table. The contest is arm wrestling! Each of you is matched up at random with a contestant. Please make an opposed strength check to see how you do. A tie goes to the contestant!

At the table with Eric, 'Osul feels they are fairly evenly matched. It is a struggle, and he is having trouble discerning what kind of animal companion Eric has left at home. Eventually, he is able to get the win, but he acknowledges the closeness of it over a handshake with the off hand.

Grindar removes his belt of strength out of a sense of fairness, and than sits down at the table. He doesn't say a word as he easily, but gently wins in this test of strength. (rolled 23) After his victory, Grindar says, "I'm sorry you were forced to face off against me. I'm a little over qualified when it comes to tests of strength." He says this with no emotion, and no conceit, as he truly feels bad for Ruby, though he does offer to shake her hand. Grindar also gives a nod of approval to Osul's secret mission.

Neshi, not the strongest of individuals but being a Liontaur does give him quite the size advantage, so trying to mitigate the size difference, Neshi lays on his four legs allowing him to be able to still reach the table and somehow still manages to defeat Lauren in a good arm wrestling match.

She struggles but can't put the gnome down. However she is able to keep the paladin from putting her arm down as well. "I guess this is a draw." She rasps out while arm wrestling.

"Congratulations," he tells Urist. "That's quite a grip."

Moridark takes the time to know the contestants, The mage introduces himself to each of them and smiles at Relondar, "I am not much for physical feats of strength. I hope we both do well." Moridark puts his arm on the table and with a little effort manages to pin Relondar's arm down.
At the end of the first round, two challengers gain points: Urist and Brom each manage to gain a point!
The crowd loves the matches. They especially cheer when the Wardens remove their magical boosters. And they are amazed to see even two contestants win points!
The next match is a footrace! If your movement speed is greater, you win. If your movement speed is matched, then please make a Dex check to see who edges out whom.

"My friend I can not divest my self of my supernatural speed, but I vow I will not avail myself of its use. Even so, I am not truly sure this is a fair race, as I am a quadruped, but there is nothing I can do about that.

Moridark removes his belt and sets it aside for the race. The mage takes off (30 feet movement, Dexterity 11) and crosses the finish line just ahead of Urist. Moridark shakes Urist’s hand and congratulates them on a good race as he puts his belt back on.
Only Brom triumphs this this round. The others take their losses in good cheer, especially Urist, who declares that if he had just had one more pint in him, he woulda won that one!
But Brom refuses to shake 'Osul's offered hand. "Taking off your magic items, that's fine, and a fair and noble way to play this game. But putting yourself out there as a little creature instead of your true form? Please, friend, let me assume you are well-intentioned, but leave me the dignity of a fair fight, not one with your hands tied behind your back. If I win, will they say that the race was rigged? Because it kind of was."
The paladin scowls and walks away.
At the end of the second round, Brom has 2 points and Urist has 1.
Jinn announces the next challenge ... holding your breath! "And the heroes of the Tree of Parting seem set on making this a fair fight, so to even things up, all Wardens must perform this task while hopping on one foot!"
A character can hold her breath for 2 rounds per point of Constitution. If a character takes a standard or full-round action, the remaining duration that the character can hold her breath is reduced by 1 round. After this period of time, the character must make a DC 10 Constitution check in order to continue holding her breath. The check must be repeated each round, with the DC increasing by +1 for each previous success.
Thus, each PC must take their Con score in rounds, and then roll Constitution checks vs DCs 10, 11, 12, 13, ... until you fail one.

Trellus only chuckles softly as Jinn makes the Wardens hop on one foot. And then can only shake his head when Brom insists on doing the same.
Nevertheless, he lines up next to Ruby, and hops away..for a couple minutes. However, hopping while concentrating on something else doesn't appear to be his forte, and in 13 rounds he loses his balance, falls over, and takes a big breath in surprise.
"Light," he mutters to himself.
The warrior rises and congratulates Ruby.

'Osul [the DM presumes not in hedgehog form, contra the header] asks Jinn for a ruling on Wardens holding back and disadvantaging themselves. The WLA leader grins and says softly, "I figured it would be clear that the hopping on one foot was my ten-yard penalty for bad behavior." [OOC: She uses a more appropriate Woldian sports analogy, but I hope you get the idea.]
She adds, even more quietly, "If that was not clear enough, please feel free to divest your items, but no more handicapping yourselves. It's insulting to the contestants."
Elyngael asks Relondar his opinion of the breath challenge. "Indeed, my lady," he says, "It seems benearh the dignity of this august assembly."
Standing close by, Ruby laughs and declares rudely that the elf should extract the thing that is in the place that makes him so stuck up! "If the lordly lord is too noble to be an adventurer, he can go back to being a guard on a wall. Personally, I'd rather die of boredom first!"
At first, Relondar is offended, but then he laughs at himself. "Being a Watch Captain can be a bit boring, at least in times of peace."
The Wardens are gracious in victory, and all the contestants gain a point. All have one, but Urist has two and Brom has three.
Jinn announces that the next contest will be a spelling bee. Please make opposed Intelligence checks to see if you win. Feel free to include your winning word in your post.

There is some back and forth with Relondar, but 'Osul feels a little relieved that Relondar missed "Pirouetting", dropping the "o". "Pi-Rou" being the name of one of the ettins 'Osul summons from time to time. 'Osul picks the two consecutive vowels in "Vengeance" "Well contested Relondar. How are things in The Emerald Kingdom?"

Lauren blushes a deep red and puts her face in her hands. "Cat? How could I miss on cat? I thought he said kit." Grindar thinks she looks close to tears.
Eric laughs to miss "mosquitoes." He tells Trellus, "My next favored enemy will definitely be vermin!"
Urist chuckles with Elygael. "Ah, lass," he says, "You see I am not much of a reader. There just ain't much time for reading at the forge. Plus the sparks don't play well with paper!"
Brom does not seem dismayed at all to lose, and he is glad for the distraction of a conversation. He tells Armand that he is from a little gnome village, not all that far away, and that he spent some time in Dirt City, which he found a bit too, well, crime-ridden for his tastes. "Below ground it is nice enough, but above ground, you know, it is basically legalized anarchy!"
Jinn nods to Armand, and then calls for a break. "We're about half-way through, so please take the chance to relax. We'll be back in 30 minutes." The people in the stands stretch and stand, moving to visit the stalls and to mingle. A small crowd comes down to the edge of the grassy area where the heros were engaging in the contests.

During the break, Relondar and 'Osul talk about the Emerald Kingdom. "It is a beautiful and peaceful place," he says. "But since the Great Wyrm was slain, the capital has been very quiet and peaceful. I'm thought about putting in for a transfer to our southern border, where at least there are a few orc raids now and then to keep the rust off one's blade, but ... I think I want something more."
From the fans at the edge of the field, someone calls out, "Master Liontaur! Uh, Your-Neshi? Can I have your autograph?" Another person calls to Moridark. Ruby and Doris smile to see it. Ruby elbows Doris in the ribs and says, "Someday that'll be our names they're callin out, missy!"
"Yes," replies Doris. "So long as there is no spelling test to join the WLA!"

Armand goes over to Captain Relondar and 'Osul. Hello. You know I grew up in the town of Waypoint in the Emerald Kingdom. When my father died he left me a magical glaive and mithral chain shirt. He never told me how he came to have them. You see my father was a trashman, my mother died when I was 2 years old. My parents were ‘old’ when I was born. I did learn that I was the youngest of his father's children, and my two sisters had already left the household when I was born. I never knew them, as they had moved away. My father never told me what the family name was and when I brought it up, as children will do, my father would tell me that family’s names are unimportant as each person should make a name for themselves and not rely on what others may think of where he came from. However, a mysterious stranger told me during a Yuletide celebration that my family name is De'lafere. I really haven't had time to really investigate the history behind that name."

"In the next contest, each Warden must attempt to sneak from one of two entrances into this field in which we have scattered barrels. The Warden has to do his or her best to hide. If the contestant correctly picks the barrel behind which the Warden is hiding, they win a point!"

Grindat removes his mithril breastplate, and says, "I know it looks looks I may be seeking an advantage by removing my armor, but the truth is, this breastplate is enchanted with the shadow ability, and as such it actually gives me an advantage." Of course even without the shadow ability, Grindar is very capable of making himself hard to spot. (Rolled a 39) After the competition, Grindar approaches Relondar and says. "I have no doubt about your powers of perception, but I have dedicated much to the art of non-detection, a skill set that has served me well. It hardy seems fair for someone who has spent years studying the ways of stealth to compete in such a way."

Armand is surprised that he succeeded. He speaks to Lauren. "It was a good effort. Our type are just not cut out for being stealthy or spotting things. I find it easier to let others in the party handle that and I just concentrate on what I'm good at. Don't be discouraged. I'm sure there will be some contests soon that play to your strengths."

Like most of his companions, Trellus is dubious about his ability to sneak anywhere.
Knowing Brom is thinking the same thing, the warrior decides for a bolder approach.
He strides through the right door, and, watching Brom carefully, starts and stops his way across several barrels until he is near the middle of the field.
His assumption that this is the last place Brom would think of proves correct, and he's rather pleased with himself when the gnome guesses incorrectly.

It is also a responsibility. As an example, you need look no further than this contest. Jinn approached us to participate, not as the Wardens, and not as heroes, but because some of us, like me, are members of the WLA. And it is because of that bond, of that oath, that some of the most powerful heroes in the Wold stood before a lot of people and tried to hold their breath while hopping on one leg.
We did so, because we were asked. Whether an interesting afternoon, or a seriously warped mission, we of the WLA answer the call.

Grindar waits as he plays with Ffrind. He introduces the pup to Cotton, who sniffs the little guy and than turns away. Apparently the rapke isn't happy about sharing Grindar's affections, but the ranger is quick to understand what is going on in Cottons's animal mind, and so he casts speak with animals, on himself, and than explains to Cotton that she is still his faithful companion, and nothing will change that. After much reassuring, Cotton sniffs Ffrind again, and than gives the wee pup a lick. Grindar sets the pup down, and is amazed to watch a full grown rapke start to play with a baby dog. Cotton is obviously taking extra precautions to be gentle with Ffrind, and it is clear that the two have bonded, and will become good friends.

'Osul's very generous offer is met with silence ... and then a thunderous roar of approval from the crowd.
Jinn is speechless, and then she bows and smiles. "You Wardens are true heroes!" she says.
Trellus and Grindar are clearly pleased, and Armand is a little shy with the reception.
All of the contestants step up to shake your hands and thank you.
"I hope I can speak for all my new friends," says Relondar, "to say that this is generous and supportive beyond words."
"You're a grand bunch of lads, you are," says Urist.
Jinn steps up and quickly organizes the swearing in ceremony. Each of the seven say their words: "I do solemnly swear to uphold the ideals of the League, to protect the innocent and combat evil wherever I may find it."
Afterwards, Brom looks at each of the others. "In fact, I would like to invite all of us to form a new adventuring group! Everyone else quickly nods in agreement."
Doris looks over to you all and asks you, "Any ideas on a name for our group?"
This is followed by a super celebration, and everyone in the audience, as well as you Wardens and new WLAers, are feasted and celebrated.
Elyngael watches the wealthy fellow who has been a person of interest. She has an intuition that there is more to him than meets the eye. There is an ... aura ... about him. He walks to meet her. "Well done, heroes," he says. "If I may have a private word with you Wardens?"

Trellus notices the tasteful diamond cufflinks carved into tiny dice. He mentions Wardd, and the gentleman smiles.
"I am certainly a deep admirer of the patron of luck, and in fact, I have come to let you know that the highest authorities in the gambler's church has smiled on you. CAYZLE OOC: Sorry, only appliues to the PC. Cannot delay conditions on others. I mean, it is a nice item, but not perfect for all possible uses. Also, you cannot delay actual damage, like hp damage or ability score damage. Also does not delay death or being unconscious because of hp damage.

When he releases your hand, there is a small tattoo in your palm. Please add the following to your PC sheet:
WARDD'S BLESSING (Fate Item)
This small tattoo of a 6-sided die shows nine black pips on three sides (5, 3, 1). Whenever your mind or body first becomes subject to any harmful effect that allows a saving throw to resist or mitigate it, you may, as an free action, choose to delay the onset of that effect for 1 minute, after you fail the saving throw but before its effects occur. This activation causes one of the pips to fade to grey. When that minute passes, you may continue to delay the onset of this harmful effect an additional minute as a free action by willing it, which uses another pip, thus repeating the cycle for another minute. The delayed harmful effect occurs when you fall unconscious or 1 minute after the last time the die's power activated; rounds spent delaying the effect do not count toward the effect's duration (for example, a curse that lasts 5 rounds takes effect for a full 5 rounds, even if the wearer delayed its effect several minutes). Effects that protect against or negate the harmful effect work normally while it is delayed, for example, neutralize poison cast on you while you delay the effect of a poisonous bite removes the poison effect. Value: 90,000 gp total; 10,000 gp per pip.

I am always one to go where the wind blows, so-to-speak and as we always seem to be getting into a few things that are a bit over our heads I don't see where a bit of luck, or having a little chance on our side wouldn't hurt, So I am in as well.

All is well, there are no problems, and everything has been resolved satisfactorily The people are not hungry or thirsty, everybody is in good health, and morale is high. Your recent interventions have had the desired results, and you can rest assured that your good works are bearing the best fruit that can be expected.
More generally, you find yourselves in a delightful period of peace and prosperity here at home as well. Life is good. It is an excellent time to work on hobbies and crafts, train and volunteer and start a business, relax and take in a good play.

He takes flight in wide arcs around The Tree surveying The Tree itself, surrounding land and sky, etc.

Trellus gets to know the people in the community by donating manual labor. One old lady needs help cleaning out her house, moving furniture, and lifting. A team of carpenters are glad to have a strong back helping to take down the bleachers and temporary structures after the tournament.
Elyngael and Brawn show Trellus the sights.
Armand spends his time in scholarly pursuits. A cute librarian is very helpful and invites Armand to lunch.
'Osul pursues spiritual pursuits. He finds his meditations returning, again and again, to the Culverwood that he reveres.
He also checks on Wizbang and Liliput. [OOC: remind your poor new DMs who those are? Wasn't Wizbang an awakened tarsier?]
'Osul wants to try out assuming dragon shape. Where does he do so, and with what witnesses / spotters?
Moridark studies and spends time with the local kids for breaks. The word spreads, and he finds a gang of pre-teens hanging outside his windows, singing songs when they are tired of waiting. "Who can take a rainbow ..."
Neshi delves into his spiritual and fey leanings. He too has thoughts about forests, even when that wasn't exactly what he had imagined.

(Wiz-Bang is indeed an Awakened Tarsier. I introduced him as an NPC, in the first module I wrote (monkey business), back when I was DMing in Tree. Personally I fell in love with the little guy, and so decided to use him as my Catacombs salesperson, when I joined the staff there. Elyngael tells Trellus, "Not long. I guess, well I've been here for a few of their adventures. We met up going to Plateau City to take care of a criminal that was assassinated in jail. Then things sort of got all weird and we were whisked into the Sargrass and had to work with a bunch of other heroes. We saw the birth of a god." She will otherwise start patrolling the caravan routes to make sure there's no pitfalls, or lurking thieves.

'Osul goes out on his own, alone and without back-up, into a magical forest. He finds a wooden cage hanging from a tree, high above the ground. Inside the cage is a male half-orc, looking to be in bad health.
Neshi finds that the Tree of Parting community is, at least for now, enjoying a bout of prosperity. No controversies, no dangers, and most everybody is prospering. After recent events, most people are happy to be enjoying a bit of peace.
Grindar speaks with a well-known tree. But it is ... for want of any better way to put it, sleeping. The only communications he can receive are disjointed. Something about "going deeper" and "the heart of the forest." This is definitely unusual.
Rica is pleased to hear that the books Armand seeks are ones that she has connections to obtain. She explains that she is a great reader, and would be very pleased to help. "I know some people who know some people," she says. "And I always enjoy getting to know people." She suggests that she will have news ... maybe over dinner tomorrow night?
Elyngael works hard to make sure that travellers are safe in the area, but really, the environs of the Tree are safer than they have been for years, one of the merchants tells her. "No doubt do to all the good works of you and your friends here."
Moridark learns more and more about the area. Indeed, with the refreshed and newfound lore he packs into his head, he gains a one-time boon from the DM: A nat 20 on any one Knowledge Local check, if you make it before you depart on the next module.
All this peace and prosperity makes Trellus think about a hobby. Maybe weaving. Well, there are definitely weavers in the community.

He hopes to get their name, but either way he asks how he ended up here. If the story is suitably intriguing he will offer to take him back to The Tree.

'Osul heals the half-orc and interrogate's him. This person turns out to be a brigand and thief. He claims he never murdered anybody. "A Gentleman Robber, I am, sir. Karl Marimy, at your service." He was captured by druids dressed in black, who left him high up suspended as a sacrifice. He is so grateful to be saved. What does 'Osul do with him?
Grindar is confused, and reports back to his friends. But in his heart, he feels that something of those ramblings resonates with ... with ... mostl;y forgotten dreams that he can't remember, now.
Armand finds that Rica is a wonderful dinner conversationalist, not only fascinated by tales of the Wardens, but also ready with her own funny stories of her time spent in Plateau City. Mostly those poke gentle fun at herself, country girl in the big city. Whether that's true or not, it seems that her bookseller contacts in Plat City are legit, and she can help arrange the sale of all but the most rare manuscripts.
Elyngael tells Grindar some of her own tales of Deeproot. They point to the possibility that when he sleeps, he is communing with the Wood.
Trellus takes weaving lessons.
Neshi makes a quick trip to the capital of the Emerald Kingdom. He hears rumors of trouble with the local Thieves Guild acting out. And his old friend confides in him that he has been sleeping poorly, plagued by nightmares. Otherwise it is a nice visit.
Moridark continues his outreach, hoping to be a part of this community. As people warm to him, he hears rumors of people having nightmares.

'Osul senses that the half-orc is sincere in his thanks, but that he is trying to put as nice a gloss on his thiefly activities as possible. He does not get the sense that the fellow is a murderer, but he certainly specializes in taking things away from nice people who do not want to part with their goods.
"Oh, please, I have no desire to stay in these woods," he says. "I'm happy to tell my story and then be on my way. I would have died but for you, good sir."
Grindar puzzles over the sleepy words of the sleepy seer. How odd that he was barely awake. Is the fellow ill? Cursed? Hung over? Grindar shares his reservations Elyngael.
But she seems too busy checking on Miles to spend any time on the issue.
Armand reassures the book specialist that his needs are not out of the ordinary. "Well in that case," Rica says, "I'm happy to help out. What's your budget and timetable, oh patron of the literate arts?" She winks and smiles.
Elyngael determines that the training is going just fine.
Trellus continues his study of the textile arts. He is definitely getting better!
Moridark finds that many people are having strange dreams about the forest. Those who sleep in the Tree of Parting itself are most likely to report vague nightmares. Wandering in dark woods. A danger coming.
Yurr'Neshi finds that the Tree community is doing fine. People are happy. Workers are busy, Commerce is prosperous. But a few people seem run down, tired, as if they are not sleeping well.

"I wonder if Deeproot is suffering from a similar ailment, or perhaps he is somehow causing the bad dreams. Not on purpose obviously, but he mumbled "going deeper" and "the heart of the forest.", and I can't seem to get this out of my head. Now this Karl fellow is saying that he was left to die, in a cage, by some dark druids? Normally I would consider someone who has spent his life robbing others, nothing but a whitehand, with no shade to them at all, and dismiss them outright, but somehow I feel his words weave true, and we should listen to his story."

Armand gets everything ready for building that library, and he fees confident that leaving the project in Rica's hands is the right thing to do. She kisses Armand on the cheek for a fare well and says, "Don't worry, this will be great." Armand returns to the Tree for the party dinner.
A little adrift, Elyngael is hanging at HQ and is the first to get an invite to the party dinner.
Yurr'Neshi dismisses these slightly odd omens as nothing to worry about. Will he think the same after everyomne compares notes at the party tonight?
Trellus joins the dinner party and keeps his own council.

At the dinner, you share your portends. The troubled dreams. The hints that something is up. A lesser group would not have caught these hints, much less connected the dots. Perhaps a few avenues of exploration will suggest themselves.
Certainly the half-orc's take is troubling. Druids dressed in black, kidnapping a thief, hanging him in a tree to die of exposure and thirst, as a sacrifice. Are these related -- the dreams and the intended sacrificial murder?
What do you do with the half-orc? He is definitely a thief, though likely not a murderer.
A bit more disturbed and even more perplexed by the relevations of comrades, Neshi thinks for a bit and as Armand speaks of a dream place, something tweaks a bit of knowledge that has Neshi's nerves on end. subconciously his tail starts twitching from side to side just a bit as he pours over this tidbit of knowledge.
Armand? There is a place? I wouldn't necessarily say a place dreams though. More like a place of nightmares. It was originally created by ... some god or other, I cant remember (religion DC5). And I can't remember why.... (knowledge history DC15). It's not really part of the Wold though, more of a realm or pockent universe, so I don't know...
His tail is now almost working into a frenzy.
I remember my father going on about the place and how bad the place was. Apparently he had a number of friends who died there. I had never seen my father soshaken and terrified by anything....
