DM(James M) - Map - The Attacks Continue, Round 2
Friday May 28th, 2021 11:38:35 AM

Each of the wardens prepared for battle as the golems continued their slow advance. Steam rose from them with each step they made towards the heroes as their vestigial looking wings beat to keep them from sinking into the muck of the burnt grasses.

DM James: Distance 570'. Map isn't yet to scale, but shows the formation the golems are in.

The golems continue to march forward in their slow formation, steam rising with each step. You are able to hear the sounds of gears moving, as well as the clanking of metal as they move towards you. They are still a ways off, and they don't seem to be stepping out of formation. The Warden's discuss how best to deal with the new threat, and wisely they don't seem to be in any hurry to close the distance between the enemy and their-selves. The golems move forward another 40 feet.

Osul creates a couple of earthquakes, trapping one of the golems 40ft under ground, by the 1st one. The rest of the golems are able to avoid being knocked down, and or falling into a fissure, and before the second one hits, they take to the air, traveling just off the grounds surface, thus avoiding the second earthquake. (Sorry I didn't see your `1st post , it must have come up at the same time I was posting)

Armand continues to asses his situation, and what he can do.

Vamir wishes he was better equipped for these kind of situations.

Elyngeal seems to be getting a bit impatient.

Neshi drops a ice storm on the golems. As the ice chunks hit the golems, steam envelops them, as the ice chunks melt almost instantly. The golems don't seem to take any damage, but their movement seems to have slowed down buy about half.

Atlas offer to fly ahead in hopes of drawing out a few of the golem.

*********************************************************

After Neshi cast his spell, the golems briefly disappear in a cloud of steam. only to reappear as the slowly fly out of the steam cloud. The golems slowly fly forward 30ft, putting them at 370ft from the party.

Osul flies forward to close the gap. (You can only double move while flying. Not sure why, but Pazio doesn't allow the run (4x movement) for flight. That's why I personally prefer airwalk, coupled with longstrider.)

You quickly begin to realize that these golems are a bit different than the ones before. Obviously there is the heat aspect, that the former ones didn't have, but you also realized that Elyngeal's shock didn't slow them, as it did to the other ones, but the cold from Neshi's ice storm did.

Armand double moves forward and slightly up. The golems are just above the ground, maybe 2-3 inches or so."

Elyngeal and Brawn move forward again, and Elyngeal practically removes the head of #2 withe the force of her arrows impact.

Neshi moves closer, and hits golem #5 with a disintegrate spell. He has no problem hitting the construct, but the spell fissiles out as it makes contact with the creature.

Vamir moves into a better healing/buffing position

Osul moves into position and casts a spell. (Sorry I didn't realize that there was a house rule for the running action. Funny thing is, we just had a discussion about it on the DM's Board a week or two ago, and no one brought up the house rule. Everyone seemed to agree that airwalk was better than fly or overland flight for fast movement.
At that travel speed you would have been able to cast a spell, within the range you mentioned. Please do so retroactively, in your next post.)

Owen and Neshi have similar ideas, as they try to dispel the golems. Though an extremely clever idea, the spell doesn't seem to have any affect. (OOC... Way to go Kent, you made your DM have to do some research. LOL!!
Based on what I read in different forums, there are 2 reasons that dispel magic shouldn't work on a golem. First, since golems are immune to all magic, except that which is mentioned in their stat blocks, they would be protected from any spell not on their list. Personally I don't see how this reason functions, as golems are only immune to spells that offer saves and spell resistance, which dispel magic does neither, however it's hard to argue with the second point, and that is, Dispel Magic, as per the spell description, only dispels spells, and spell-like abilities. Since golems are creatures (constructs) and not spells, they wouldn't be affected by Dispel Magic. That said, even though the spell didn't function as planned, I like to reward creativity, so I'm giving Neshi and Owen each a hero point.)

Last round Osul tried using quench on the golems, but since they aren't of the fire subtype, the only thing that happens, is a large steam cloud is formed as the water hits their bodies. He moves into a better position this round.

Elyngeal gives Atlas a hard time as she continues to fire.

Armand continues to hustle forward. (Actually, since Haste changes your movement speed, and doesn't just add to it, you use the hastened speed for all movement, including a run action)

Atlas continues to fly towards danger.

***********************************************

The golems continue their slow forward motion, however, they have finally broke formation. #5 moves into striking distance of Neshi and attacks with a slam attack, but the blow is deflected by Neshi's magical defenses.
At the same time, #4's arm snakes out in a telescopic action and attacks Owen. The golem hits with a natural 20, and confirms with a natural 20. The Wizard takes 25 bludgeoning damage and 32 fire damage.

OOC... Sorry not sure how #5's stats didn't transfer along with the rest, or how I missed it. I made sure they are their this round. Though they are only a few inches off the ground, as I mentioned before, the golems are technically flying.

Osul's dino friend shows up, and the druid gives him a buff.

Armand's elemental friend arrives and slams golem 4.

Neshi's elementals show up and begin to pummel #5

Owen steps back to reassess the situation.

Vamir brings forth his spectral hand, and heals Owen.

Elyngael fires on #5 again and she can tell that the golem is critically wounded.

Atlas steps up to golem #3 and gives it what for. He is a bit surprised to discover that his weapons don't seem to meet any resistance (Either it has no DR, or his weapon bypassed it) when striking the construct. The cold on his shield doesn't cause any damage, but the fighter is aware, due to his friends trials and errors, that it would have slowed the creature if it wasn't already slowed. The holy on his sword also has no affect, and Atlas realizes that the golems aren't evil.

********************************************************

Meanwhile, #4 takes a 5ft step to engage Armand's elemental. The golem connects with it's slam and causes 10 bludgeoning and 16 fire damage.
#3 continues to attack Atlas, but the fighter is able to dodge the blow.
#5 attacks elemental #3, hitting and inflicting 12 bludgeoning and 16 fire damage

As everything seems well in hand, Elyngeal feels a rumbling in the ground next to her, and out of the ground pops #1. As it turns out, the construct has been burrowing ever since it got sucked into Osul's earthquake, and has chosen now as it's moment to show itself. #1 hits Elyngael with two slams, the second one a confirmed crit. (It was already buried before any cold attacks happened, and as such hasn't been slowed.) The first slam does 11 bludgeoning and 16 fire damage, and the second slam does 38 bludgeoning and 32 fire damage.

Armand's elemental continues to pummel #4, as the cleric rushes forward and gives #3 a wack, with his hammer.

Osul's dino friend takes a big bite out of #4.

Elyngael gets her revenge on #1 in a big way, taking it out in one round. She lets Atlas know her kill count.

Melzat and Vamir move into position, as Vamir heals Elyngael.

Neshi tries disintegrate again, and again it doesn't seem to have any affect. His elemental friends finish off #5, and hit #3.

DM Jeremy Battle Map
Monday June 14th, 2021 10:10:57 AM

Neshi is able to identify the molten iron golems, and he puts his elemental friends on over-watch. Having the harvesters "harvest" the iron, that they provided, leaves a bad taste in his mouth. However, he realizes that a fortune, by Harvesters standards isn't much by an adventurer's standard. a quick estimate of the normal value of the iron would only be a couple hundred gold pieces or so, and even if they could get double that cost, here in the Sargrass Plains, 400gp is nothing to a powerful adventurer, but it could outfit a band of nomads for well over a year.

Osul makes a check list, as he identifies the molten iron golems. He worries that they may reassemble, but his fears are soon put to rest, as the iron is dismantled into manageable sized pieces.

Armand lets Osul know that he thinks the golems are dead. He asks if anyone is ready to head home, and offers to use Longbranch's branch.

Elyngeal is up for the branch, but wonders if the Harvesters know how to work metal, as she hasn't seen any forges, and due to the fact that their weapons, armor and tools are all made from organic materials, and stone. A Harvester child happens to be walking by as she wonders out loud, and while giggling, as if the child thought it was funny that everyone didn't know, the girl says, "Oh we don't work the metal, but we can sell it in the towns where there are people who do. New Rattledam has a dwarf, He's really nice, who makes axes and stuff out of metal, and Stone Temple has some metal workers as well. I've heard that there are other cities and towns, but I've never been there."

Vamir nods his agreement with Armand, as he keeps his eyes peeled.

Owen reminds everyone that the branch has already been used, and wonders if they shouldn't deal with Vurm's ally.

***********************************************

OOC...As Weston has alluded, in Owen's post, the branch has already been used. It was established, from the time Longbranch gifted the item, that the branch was a single use item. This has come up before, and I reminded everyone then, I know that a lot happens in game, and it can be difficult to keep track of everything, but can we once and for all put an end to the legend of Longbranch's branch? For the record, I'm not even close to mad, I just hate having to say no to you guys.

As the warriors return, they are dragging multiple travoises filled with scrap metal that can easily be identified as body parts from either iron golems, or molten iron golems, They tell a story of how they encountered some metal creatures, that burned the grass, as they went. They explain how they were able to stop and kill 5 or 6 of the creatures, showing the scrap metal as prof, but 5 or 6 got away, and they seem relieved when they see the harvesters dismantling the golems the Warden's slew.

When Owen reminds everyone that the Branch is literally broken, the Warden's have to make a decision as to what to do. They can seek another means of heading home, they could investigate the origin of the Molten Iron Golems, they could try to find Vurm's helper, or something your DM hasn't even thought of, that will force him to chuck all his plans out the window, and start from scratch.

We don't know the land, we have no map, we have no means of good transportation other than walking. We can't teleport anywhere around here because we really don't even know where here is." He wishes he had a rock to throw. "I can memorize plane shift and take us away from here. If I do it twice I can shift us twice, but accuracy is an issues. Armand seems a bit homesick, and wonders if the Warden's should even get involved, as he isn't sure where the golems came from. He offers to prepare plane shift, but worries about the accuracy, especially when he has to make more than one trip. and obtaining a metal fork attuned to the Wold could be interesting, unless he already has one.

Vamir wonders as to whether they are stuck here, and wonders if there might be a someone who can help in one of the cities.

Elyngeal tries to encourage Armand and says the reason for the slump is a lack of purpose, and suggests the spell casters commune with their deities or powers to see if they can find a way out of this out of this.

Neshi feel that their job isn't quite finished, and wonders if they should head to some city, such as New Rattledam, or Stone Temple.

Owen is convinced that they can find a clue to Vurm's ally. He is comfortable in his estimate of the location of the cave, that Vurm was healed in, and he knows it is located somewhere in the Crystal Mountains, he knows that Stone Temple is also located in the Crystal Mountains, but the two locations seem to be quite a ways away from each other, he knows that Hook City is a place where magic is plentiful, and he knows that the southern continent has never been mapped, because the continent shuffles it's land masses from time to time, a phenomenon known as the Great Migration

Atlas gives Armand a hard time

Osul flies up for a look of the land. From his high elevation, he can just make out a reddish something on the northern horizon. Based on the information he has received, he is sure that it is the Crystal Mountains, and he estimates that it is about a 6 day trip by foot (three days for those who have woodland stride), much quicker if other means are used. He can also see the line of burnt grass left by the golems, which seems to be heading north in the direction of Vurm's burrow, though it's hard to tell for sure.

What will our heroes do? So many options, so little DM's imagination. Whatever they decide, it is sure to be interesting.

Atlas feels a trip up north would be nice. He asks if anyone could get them their quickly.

Armand realizes he hasn't healed his friends.and remedies that. He offers to prepare wind walk in the morning, and suggests following the burnt path left by the golems.

Elyngael is fine with Armand's idea, as long as the Wardens are doing something useful.

Vamir offers to cast wind walk on everyone now.

Owen likes Armand's plan.

Osul asks about the Crystal Mountains, and a nearby Harvester looks up from dismantling a golem and answers. "Well the chain is a long one, and as the name suggests it is made up predominantly of red crystals, and in some locations the crystals will explode if there is too much noise. There is a bunch of monks, up in Stone Temple, who sing to the crystals and calm them down, so they don't explode. I've heard that anyone can be taught the tune, but I've never learned it myself."

Neshi offers to teleport everyone, but claims it will deplete his spells a lot, and split the party for a smidge. He only had a view of the interior of the cave, so he would have to land inside, unless he has greater teleport of course.

A few ideas have been floated. Armand has suggests walking down the burnt path today, and wind walking tomorrow, Vamir offers wind walk today, and Neshi offers to teleport everyone, to the cave. All are fine ideas, with both good and bad points, but which one will our heroes choose?

Atlas is shocked at the number of methods of travel the Wardens have available, and that's not even a complete list. He's all for a quick teleport, but if caution is preferred, he's fine with wind walk.

Armand is all for having a full complement of spells, and would rather walk, camp, and recover spells in the AM, using wind walk after that, as he doesn't want to split the party.

Vamir likes Armand's idea, and takes the over-watch position.

Elyngael, as usual, takes point, looking for tracks. she easily identifies the actual tracks of the golems, but that is all she sees.

Owen also likes Armand's idea.

Osul joins Vamir in the air, to help with look out.

************************************************************

And just like that the Warden's have a plan. The heroes begin walking down the burnt out path left by the golems, and other than getting their feet wet from the wetness left by Osul's rain storm, nothing seems to happen. after a few hours travel, the signs of a fight are clearly visiable, and Elyngeal is able to decipher that this is where the Harvester warriors fought their golems. After the fight location, 6 more sets of tracks join the 5 they had been following.

Travel is easy, and you are able to make really good time, since the grasses are burned to the ground, and you don't have to force your way though. The path runs ruler straight, and it quickly becomes clear, that you are heading straight to the remains of Vurm's burrow.

As the day winds down, you realize you have traveled half way to Vurm's burrow remains, and your original 4 day trip is now a 2 day trip, due to the current ease of travel. One thing that stands out, as interesting, is that by the end of the day, the grasses have already started growing back, and are about 2 inches tall.

Do our heroes make camp, for the night, or do they press on, taking advantage of the ease of travel, and near impossibility of losing the trail?

Atlas acts as the voice of reason, and suggests breaking for the night, so as to be at their peak performance.

Neshi agrees with Atlas, as he is certain that they will be attacked eventually.

Armand sets up his tree house, and offers to take any watch, but first.

Vamir takes care of his plant friend, before taking care of himself.

Elyngeal is fine with setting up camp, and takes her turn at the watch.

Owen is snoring the moment his head hits the pillow.

Osul hunts up a lovely dinner for everyone, and takes his watch, at the proper time.

****************************************

The night goes on without event, until during the end of Elyngeal's watch, as Osul is taking over. At that time, a huge sized creature flies by the tree house. The creature circles back and hovers over the tree house for a few minutes, almost as if it is trying to figure out what it is seeing. After all, trees don't grow here in the Sargrass Plains. After a minute or two, the creature seems comfortable with the oddity, and flies away. The creature looks like a cross between a purple worm and a bat, maybe a bit dragonish, but it is clearly not a dragon. Anyone awake during Elyngeal's, or Osul's watch can attempt a DC 30 knowledge nature check. Highlight to display spoiler: {Even though it happens extremely rarely, you are sure that you just witnessed a Sarg Moth. a rarely seen. harmless creature found only here in the Sargrass Plains.}

The morning breaks, and like 99% of all days, here in the Sargrass,. The sun comes out, promising another day of desert like heat. Over night, the burnt out grass has grown noticeably, and it is already about a foot tall, making it more difficult to find the actual footprints of the golems, but the path is still easy to see, and land travel would still be easy as well.

How do our heroes wish to proceed? Do they wish to continue walking, since, at the moment, travel is so simple, do they wish to wind walk, heading strait for the cave, or do they wish to wind walk, following the burnt path to it's source, before heading to the cave?

By land, assuming the path continues to lead to the remains of Vurm's burrow, Your ETA, to the remains, should be an hour before dusk. Wind walking will get you there in four hours. If you go directly to the cave, you will arrive about a hour before dusk, and if you fly by the remains, in route to the cave, you will arrive, at the cave, at dusk.

knowledge nature d20+12=23. Elyngael is mystified by what flies over, but when the others identify it she merely shrugs because is sounds harmless. "I think we should see if there's any sort of disturbance a the point these golems were sent at the village before we head to the cave."

Osul identifies the sarg moth, and recognizes the rarity of the encounter. He tries to leave a positive impression, on the creature's mind, and as a reward, for his efforts, the sarg moth flies past the druid, lightly brushing one of it's wings against Osul's cheek, as it flies away. He recognizes that such an action is supposed to bring good luck, but whether there is any truth to that claim, or if it is just legend, only time will tell. Osul is fine with whatever mode of transportation the party chooses.

Owen is bummed he didn't get to see the evening visitor.

Armand is ready to cast wind walk, but asks if they are heading to the source of the golems or the cave.

Neshi is OK with wind walking, and considers diversifying his spell compliment.

Vamir wants Armand to save his spell slots, and cast wind walk on the party himself, though he is fine with other modes of transportation, if that is the consensus.

Eylngael doesn't seem as impressed with the sarg moth as Osul, but she realizes it isn't a threat. She suggests checking out the source of the golem's, before heading to the cave.

**********************************************

So wind walk seems to be the mode of transportation, our intrepid heroes plan to use, but two questions still remain, who will do the casting and what is their initial destination. Elyngeal has suggested checking out the source of the golems first, but is that what the rest of the Wardens wish to do? Tune in next time to find out.

"Okay Vamir, that sounds like a good plan if you are willing. I like the idea of checking out the golem's source area, though I doubt we'll find any clues of anything. Doesn't matter what time of day you go spelunking it's always dark."

Armand waits for the casting.

**************************************

Our heroes decide that checking out the source of the golems may be the right thing to do, and so following Elyngael's lead they head in that direction. The path continues to head straight in the direction of the remains of Vurm's burrow, and after an uneventful day of wind walking, the Wardens come to the end of the golems trail, and sure enough, it just so happens to be the remains of Vurm's burrow. (Shocker, I know) A quick scan of the area, and you easily find a new burrow. this one isn't nearly as large as the previous one, being only large enough for a large sized creature to move about comfortably. As you examine the burrow, you notice that it has a glassy sheen to it, as though whatever dug it, melted some of the sand within the dirt as it went. As you look down the burrow, you can see that it appears to head down at a 45 degree angle, and you don't see any twist or turns, as the tunnel appears to run in a straight line, a straight line that just so happens to run in the exact same trajectory as the path you had been following.

Atlas prepares to finish, what he believes, they missed.

Armand asks if everyone wishes to walk down the glassy sided burrow, or if the should stay in there windy form. He asks Atlas how he is going to navigate the burrow without light.

Elyngael gives the burrow entrance the once over.

Vamir tries to decipher what dug the hole.

Neshi asks if they plan on using stealth, or just barge in. It appears he would prefer the less subtle approach.

Osul is just happy that the burrow isn't a purple worm (Note to self, make the next burrow a disguised purple worm, LOL)

*****************************************

As you examine the burrow more, Vamir is able to determine that it was most likely created by the molten iron golems. He is convinced they used their heat ability to create the glassy sheen, and surmises that they did so to give the tunnel some structure, since the ground would be pretty soft after the collapse of Vurm's burrow. Elyngael can't tell how long the tunnel goes on for sure, as it extends beyond the range of both her lowlight-vision and darkvision, but what she sees is a straight tunnel heading down at a 45 degree angle. she surmises that the glassy sides will make travel sketchy, but if you only move at half speed you should be fine, of course an incorporeal wind walker has nothing to fear at all. She is able to determine that the tunnel is constant 10 ft by 10 ft, just big enough for the larger members of the party to travel comfortably, unless they have contracted a case of claustrophobia since the last time they went spelunking, which makes sense if the large sized golems dug it.

So in the fine print of the wind walk spell it says You alter the substance of your body to a cloud-like vapor (as the gaseous form spell)". So then you have to look up the gaseous form spell which says, "The subject and all its gear become insubstantial, misty, and translucent. Its material armor (including natural armor) becomes worthless, though its size, Dexterity, deflection bonuses, and armor bonuses from force effects still apply. The subject gains DR 10/magic and becomes immune to poison, sneak attacks, and critical hits. It can’t attack or cast spells with verbal, somatic, material, or focus components while in gaseous form." Ergo we need to re-materialize in order to use spells, weapons, armor, etc.

Armand will re-materialize. He debates momentarily and then pulls out his adamantine hammer and casts Light on it. "I think this will be best. Do we want to secure a rope up here or save the ropes for use later if we find thing's more steep and droppy down below?"

Armand follows Osul into the burrow, claiming the druid turned air elemental will make good cover. He makes a few wacks on the glassy floor, and is rewarded with sharp edges that could cut the feet of someone without shoes, but since Neshi is in front of Osul, that shouldn't be a problem. He also notices a hairline fracture begin to form, and realizes continuing could threaten the structural integrity of the burrow. He is able to see that the glass is about a half inch thick.

Elyngeal and brawn continue to slowly descend.

Vamir keeps his eyes open for any threats as they descend.

Neshi smiles at the glass and heads in. He calls to Owen, asking if the wizard is joining them.

Atlas asks for a light source, since Osul is blocking the light being produced by Armand's hammer.

Owen walks on the ceiling, strolling right past Neshi.

Osul squeezes on in. (Squeeze rules say a creature one size larger than the opening can move through it, but only at half speed. since it is a large sized tunnel, no matter how preposterous it may seem, a huge sized air elemental can navigate it)

****************************************************

The burrow continues its 45 degree slope, with no twists or turns. After an hour or so, the glassy burrow simply stops, as you enter a much larger tunnel. The tunnel is large enough for everyone to fit comfortably, being colossal in size, and as you examine it, it appears to be a pocket left over from Vurm's diggings, in fact you can see the dragon's claw marks in the walls, much like you did when you were in his burrow before, and you surmise that for some reason this section of the burrow didn't collapse. You also see footprints, in the dirt floor, and after a quick survey of the prints, you realize that they are yours, and you know that you have been here before. One way, the direction you remember as the way out, is collapsed, leaving but one direction to go. you also spy the heavy imprints of the molten iron golems, and they seem to be coming from further in the remaining burrow.

Light is easily handed out, and with many light spells coupled with some dancing lights, and Elyngael's sunblade, vision is fairly decent, of course it would still be dim light, but it illuminates a pretty large area. The tracks of the molten iron giants is quite easy to follow, and travel within the remains of Vurm's burrow is just as easy as it was before. As you follow the trail you begin to recognize which part of Vurm's burrow you are in, and those who are keeping their eyes peeled spot it first. The acid pit! Osul is the first to notice that the molten iron giants footprints seem to be coming from the acid pit, and with her darkvision goggles, Elyngael is the first to notice that about 50 ft or so up the shaft, over the acid pit, the burrow is blocked by a huge rock that has wedged itself in the shaft, sealing off the shaft, and protecting the acid pit, and burrow below from the cave in. DC 30 knowledge engineering Highlight to display spoiler: {It appears as though the rock was designed to wedge like it did, of course why someone would want to protect a pit filled with acid isn't clear.}

Greetings Woldians!

We have TWO games that have achieved Level 20 and just retired over the weekend! So in our usual tradition, we're holding a celebration for the next few days on the Giggling Ghost board!

Folks are already beginning to gather. We expect everyone to join in and post daily on the GG board, but all are excused from posting in their "regular career game" through Wednesday at least. :) It doesn't mean you can't post, just that you don't have to.

DMs if you're in combat, feel free to just post a "pause until after Wednesday" if you'd like, or you can do that anyway. These celebrations are important as both of these games have players who have been working for at least 9 years to achieve this retirement for their PCs.

--DMs may take the role of an NPC or 2 if they wish and hand out dishes, create action, help out, etc.
--Anyone may take the stage and tell a story or sing a song.
--Post as many times a day as you'd like on the Giggling Ghost board.

Entertain yourselves and enjoy!

Yes you may go there now and post.
Yes you should go there now and post.
What are you waiting for?
Yes, now is fine.
Are you still reading this? Why?

Atlas moved along the hollowed out area and tried not to fall.

Armand looked at the acid pit carefully in the hope to find a clue.

Vamir waited for someone more qualified to sort things out.

Elyngael looked for secret doors or switches to drain the acid.

The burrow was much more oppressive than it had been when the dragon occupied it and it felt like there was much less air in here than before. It was also unnaturally warm as if the golems had spent some time here before moving on.

Armand considers. "We could try to dispel it or maybe even if Neshi wants to cast a disintegrate on it to get rid of it. We know that it's not an illusion since the last time through here I had True Sight going."

I guess that's it until July 5, since we're supposed to go to the party in the giggling ghost.

Armand looks over the acid pit carefully with his expert eye.
Vamir keeps an eye out for danger.
Osul adds his thoughts on the subject of the acid.

Armand knelt at the edge of the acid pit and looked at the bubbling pool of green liquid. Highlight to display spoiler: { As he looked he detected a faint glistening substance sprinkled at the edge of the acid. With his fingers he touched it and rolled it around in his hand. Shards of glass....no, diamond dust. He swiped a hand through the dust and broke the enchantment. There was a circle of protection around the pool preventing him from seeing the true nature of the acid. Now that the circle was broken he could see it for what it was. An illusion. Armand could clearly see a portal here with it's water like reflective surface rippling in the light.From what he knew of these kinds of portals there should be something on the other side that could be used to close it.}

What everyone else sees:
Armand knelt down and ran his fingers gently along the dirt at the edge of acid pool and then briefly rubbed his fingers together before swiping his hand in a line directly away from the edge of the acid.

WILL Save DC 18 Highlight to display spoiler: {You see that the pool of acid is an illusion and what sits there looks like a large pool of rippling water.}

Neshi didn't think a disintegrate spell would be the thing to use as it might be a waste.
Armand revealed that the acid was an illusion concealing a portal. The illusion was concealed by a magic circle preventing it's detection.
Vamir continued to keep an eye out for danger.
Osul congratulated Armand and suggested the portal might take them to the stars or perhaps the crystal mountains.
Elyngael is amazed that Armand wasn't harmed when he brushed aside the magic circle. To her eyes he put his hand in the acid.

With the revelation that the acid was an illusion and Armand's destruction of the magic circle all were able to see the portal for what it was. As the others had suggested the portal resembled a pool of water rippling from it's center. It was definitely magic in nature and to all it appeared to be the source of the monsters coming into the sargrass to attack the harvesters.
