Vurm, the Multi-Colored

DM Jeremy   d20+11=27 ;
Thursday April 1st, 2021 11:07:41 AM

Osul gets comfortable for the moment, and ponders the shaft.

Out of frustration, Atlas taunts the dragon, and praises Neshi for his spell attempt.

Armand chastises the dragon.

Neshi thanks Atlas, and asks if he needs any more buffs. He also describes the dragon.

Vamir casts heal on Neshi, and wonders if the dragon is an outsider.

Elyngael peeks down the shaft, and can see about 20ft down. After 20 ft, the shaft is completely shrouded by smoke, leaving the depth as well as the contents of the shaft a mystery.

**************************************************************************

The illusionary voice returns, "Now, now, is that anyway to talk to your superiors, someone is going to have to teach you some manners Atlas. Armand, you've heard that cats play with mice because it makes them taste better, I'm sure. Consider yourselves mice, Meow, Mwahahahaha! Oh my, I've been rude, I haven't introduced myself, I will spare you my Draconic name, as I'm sure your simple minds wouldn't understand, but to mortals I am Vurm, Vurm the magnificent, Vurm the powerful, Vurm the Multi-Colored, and if you leave now you may refer to me as Vurm the merciful."

Knowledge Arcane 30 or History 35: Highlight to display spoiler: { Vurm is a rainbow dragon. Rainbow dragons are a combination of at least 2 types of dragons, and as such are of the dragon subtype, unless one of the dragon types is an outsider, in which case it is both a dragon and an outsider. They share all of their dragon types strengths, but none of their weaknesses, making it impossible to identify an individual's actual strengths and weaknesses, accept through trial and error.}

"Armand, I believe you've seen through enough of my ploys, allow me to remove you from the burden of your enhanced vision!" ("Dispel Magic" targeting "True Seeing", rolled a 27) This time the voice is real, and seems to be coming within the smoke filled shaft.

Armand is impressed with Vurm's spellcasting ability (No where in the description, of dispel magic, does it say it requires line of sight. As such I have always ruled, that as long as you have a known target, you can cast the spell without line of sight, otherwise, how could you use it to dispel invisibility? Of course if you are using it to counter spell, you need to be able to see the caster to counter, as per the counter spell rules.) He asks Owen to cast true seeing, and then cast create water.

Vamir suggests stepping outside and collapsing the tunnels. he shares his opinion that Vurm is a coward.

Owen creates a telepathic bond betwixed his friends, lets them all know Vurm is a rainbow dragon, and casts true seeing.

Elyngeal likes Vamir's idea, but wonders if it will harm Vurm any since he can teleport.

Now that he knows what is down the shaft, Osul starts summoning.

**********************************************************************************

As Armand casts create water, the water droplets begin to disperse the smoke. As he looks down the tunnel, he sees Vurm is admiring at himself in in a 30 ft tall by 20 ft wide mirror, apparently unconcerned that he has unwanted guests.

Atlas considers how lovely a suit of armor Vurm's scales would make, and asks if they should attack or collapse the tunnels.

Elyngael fires on Vurm, but her arrow fails to find a weak spot in the dragons flesh.

Armand suggests that Atlas invest in some means of making ranged attack, and suggests javelins of lightning. He considers smashing the mirror with spiritual weapon, but realizes it is just out of the spell's range. He also realizes that the mirror is made of highly polished silver. Appraise DC 20 Highlight to display spoiler: { the mirror is valued at 5,000gp} (I apologize, looking back on Friday's post I failed to mention the depth of the shaft, which is 300ft. The range of the spell is 100ft + 10/level)

Neshi returns to his normal taur form, and tries to get into a better position. he asks Owen if what they are seeing is real, or an illusion.

Osul's new friend, a purple worm, arrives. He is about to cast animal growth but realizes that purple worms are vermin not animals, and as such the spell won't work on him. (Pazio has some weird rules, and placing insects in a different category as animals is one of them) He also realizes that Haste doesn't allow a caster to cast two spells per round, but since he can't up-size his worm friend, he doesn't need to burn a hero point, and simply casts magic fang on the worms bite. The shaft is 300ft deep.

Owen examines Vurm, and his true seeing reveals that Vurm is, or at least what he is seeing at the moment, is a quasi-real illusion. Of course he shares that find with his friends.

Vamir is prepared to cast insanity on Vurm, but due to Owen's revelation, he holds off.

*********************************************************************************

As Elyngeal's arrow is deflected by the quasi-real Vurm's scales, he looks up and asks, "Aren't I a lovely sight? I keep examining myself in this mirror, and I have come to the conclusion that I am the loveliest thing on this planet!" As Vurm is speaking, it is as if he has completely forgotten his previous encounters with the Wardens. You are certain it's the same dragon, or a quasi-real illusion of him anyway, but he seems to be completely different mentally.

BTW, anyone who looks down the shaft, which at this point is everyone, can make the DC 20 appraise check mentioned above.

I'm thinking that the suggestion to pull back and wait at the top of the tunnel is a good idea. We can set up camp at the edge of the acid grass and establish a watch system. We have spells that will provide food and water. Essential we mount a siege. Anything he sends up we eliminate to keep the villagers safe. If he comes up we fight him in the open at least and not in these tunnels."

Using a trick form the beast's own play book, Neshi dimension doors to just 50 feet behind the beast and quickened casts Prismatic spray from behid the beast and from a sudden appearance (hopefully catching him flat footed.) and litterally coats the dragon with the spell results. Eight multicolored rays of light flash from your hand. Each ray is a different color and has a different power and Purpose. Each creature in a 60-foot cone must make a Dexterity saving throw; DC 27. For each target, roll a d8 to determine which color ray affects it.

1-Red: The target takes 10d6 fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

2-Orange: The target takes 10d6 acid damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

3-Yellow: The target takes 10d6 lightning damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

4-Green: The target takes 10d6 poison damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

5-Blue: The target takes 10d6 cold damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

6-Indigo: On a failed save, the target is Restrained. It must then make a Constitution saving throw at the end of each of its turns. If it successfully saves three times, the spell ends. If it fails its save three times, it permanently turns to stone and is subjected to the Petrified condition. The successes and failures don't need to be consecutive, keep track of both until the target collects three of a kind.

7-Violet: On a failed save, the target is Blinded. It must then make a Wisdom saving throw at the start of your next turn. A successful save ends the blindness. If it fails that save, the creature is transported to another plane of existence of the DM's choosing and is no longer Blinded. (Typically, a creature that is on a plane that isn't its home plane is banished home, while other creatures are usually cast into the Astral or Ethereal planes.)

8-Special: The target is struck by two rays. Roll twice more, rerolling any 8.

My apologies everyone, somehow I missed the fact that Elyngael was using pinpoint accuracy. I could blame my new work hours, but in reality, I just missed it. Time for a little ret-con.

With Elyngael's arrow sticking out of his quasi-real body, the illusionary Vurm looks up at the Wardens and says, "Aren't I the most beautiful thing you've ever seen?"

****************************************************************

Armand suggests letting Vurm come to them, preferring not to have to deal with the 300ft shaft.

Elyngael wonders if she will be effective in a fight against Vurm, but since her DM is an idiot, she realizes her arrow hit it's mark just fine.

Neshi decides to take the fight to Vurm. and attacks with a prismatic spray.

Owen offers to feather fall everyone down safely.

Vamir admits that in order for him to be effective, he needs to be a lot closer. (Wade, you're doing just fine, you take care of yourself. If you need a sub because things get to be to much, just ask the guys/gal, they are happy to help out)

Atlas realizes the wisdom of Armand's plan, but confesses he hasn't the patience for such a thing.

Osul's purple worm continues to burrow towards the bottom of the shaft. (Based on my calculations, and please correct me if I'm off, the worm should take a total of 8 rounds, assuming it double moves each round, to reach the bottom, leaving 6 more rounds)

Osul's worm arrival 6/8
*****************************************************************************

As Neshi reappears at the bottom of the shaft, he must make a DC15 perception check to notice that the real Vurm is right behind him. (Vurm isn't hiding, hence the relatively low check, but since Neshi's attention is elsewhere, their is still the chance that he could not see him, and be caught flatfooted.) If Neshi makes his perception check, He can ret-con his post for yesterday to attack the real Vurm, instead of the illusion. Regardless which Vurm Neshi attacks, the ray that hits Vurm is the yellow ray. (rolled a 3) As the ray of lightning hits Vurm, the dragon seems completely unaffected by the electricity, and Neshi instantly realizes that Vurm is immune to electrical damage. (If Vurm wasn't immune to the ray that hit him I would have required a DC 28 SR roll)

The illusionary Vurm roars in anger as Neshi appears in his home, and tries to inflict harm on him. "How dare you invade my home and try to cause me harm! That is completely unacceptable! You could have marred my beauty!"

The real Vurm lets out a maniacal laugh and says, "Mwahahahahaha! I love it when dinner is delivered! Do I need to tip the delivery person? Mwahahahahahahah!

In a nonchalant fashion, almost as if he has no fear what-so-ever, the real Vurm attempts to eat Neshi. Bite attack hits AC 42 for 28 damage.

Armand hears the quasi-illusionary Vurm start to get crazy and then another Vurm laughing manically and proclaiming a delivered lunch. Then there is the loud snap of a large mouth clamping shut. "Crickey, I think Neshi teleported into trouble!"

He propels himself at a run down the shaft (which with haste on means I should be able to cover 240 feet (base move 30/move + hasted 30/bonus) running is X4. Since I was not at the edge of the pit, I believe that puts me at 220 feet down the hole. As he air walk/runs down he shouts out "Yes Vurm you look maarvelloous! Tell me how you get your scales to gleam so."

At the end of his flight he makes a heroic surge and casts Dispel Magic on the illusory Vurm. I'm assuming I can dispel it, since it's based on the project image spell, but that's meta gaming.

IC: Assuming Neshi warns the party about the real location of the dragon, Owen communicates telepathically with the others [b]"We need to help Neshi! I'll cast Feather Fall! Let's go!" He leaps off the edge and plummets down the shaft, casting Greater Dispel Magic on the quasi-illusion of the dragon as he falls. Dispel check: 26. He uses his invisibility Field to disappear before he reaches the bottom of the shaft, and as the Wardens near the bottom he casts Feather Fall as an immediate action to keep them from splattering on the floor of the tunnel.

Osul's worm arrival 5/8

Realizing that Neshi is in trouble, Armand starts air running to help. He tries to dispel the illusionary Vurm, but misses the mark by just a bit. (Since Vurm's mirage ability is a spell-like ability, so yes it can be dispelled, however the score needed to make the dispel is 28.

Owen casts feather fall on the party and then makes a leap of faith. He too tries to dispell the illusionary Vurm, but like Armand, he comes up just short.

Elyngeal, while riding on Brawn, air runs to the bottom and then puts a couple of arrows in the real Vurm. The arrows sink into the dragon's flesh nicely, but the electricity doesn't seem to have any effect.

Neshi tries dropping a flamestrike on Vurm, but fails to overcome it's SR of 28

Vamir tries to turn Vurm insane, but he too barely misses the 28 SR

Atlas also makes the leap of faith, figuring if the spell doesn't work, at least he can try to land on Vurm.

*******************************************

The real Vurm roars in pain as Elyngael's arrows sink into his flesh. In a fit of anger, he moves into a better position, then takes a deep breath and belches out a 60 ft cone of fire. anyone on the ground, or within 40 ft of the ground, takes 76 fire damage (DC 27 reflex for half) He then says, "I like to roast my meal before eating, the char adds flavor! Osul's worm arrival 4/8

Osul casts some mass buffs on his friends, and his worm continues it's downward trajectory.

Armand tells everyone to avoid fire and electricity, and suggests maybe cold works. He tells everyone to rally to him as he begins summoning.

Owen casts feeblemind, and though he can't be certain, he is pretty sure that the spell worked.

Elyngeal does some more pinpoint shooting, and sticks 3 arrows into Vurm's side. (I ruled that the haste attack can be pinpointed.) Brawn tries to bite the illusionary Vurm, but misses.

Neshi casts both ray of enfeeblement, and cone of cold on Vurm. He fails to make contact with the ray (SR 28), though the cone hits him full broadside. (Failed his save)

Atlas asks for some healing, as he swoops in for an attack, landing a solid hit.

Vamir casts some serious healing on Atlas, then tries casting bestow curse on Vurm, through Melzat. Melzat makes it past Vurm's touch AC, but Vamir fails to overcome Vurm's SR. Melzat lands a solid blow with his second slam, and though the frost seems to do it's thing, the shock doesn't seem to have any effect.

**********************************************************

With Atlas all up close and personal, Vurm activates his elemental auras, (Free action) and Atlas takes 3 fire damage, and 2 electrical damage, as heat, and electricity radiate in a 10ft aura from Vurm's body. Vurm then goes full round attack mode on Atlas saying, "Must I swat you like a fly? Save yourself some trouble and jump in my mouth. It will save you some pain! Mwahahahahah!!!!" Vurm lands his bite attack, both claws, and one of his wings, but misses his second wing and tailslap. The illusionary Vurm says to Brawn, "Shoo you over grown beagle, you may shed on me and that would ruin my beautiful image!"

You are beginning to get the idea that the real and illusionary Vurm's both have completely different personalities. The real Vurm is maniacal and maybe a bit sadistic, while the illusion is completely vain and self absorbed.

The left claw does 15 damage

Atlas yells in delight, "This is incredible, O'sul, Vamir, thank you!" However, talking proved to be his downfall once again as he was too distracted with his enhancements and healing to notice that Vurm was going berserk on him. He dips and dodges, using his shield for cover, but it does little good. Then in acknowledgement to Vamir he says, in his best pirate accent, "Witches do be keeping me alive in this life, thank you."

He then turns his attention back to Vurm, unleashing his full fury. Unfortunately it was a bit dampened, as the dragon's scales and agility were hard to overcome. He did manage to land a very strong hit with his sword and a follow-up with his shield, rending the dragon's scales as he did so. However, all his other attacks were turned aside.

Osul's worm arrival 3/8

Neshi hits Vurm with a disintegration spell, but the cunning reptile was able to make his fort save. (rolled a 25)

Armand's watery friend appears. It attacks and misses. He moves closer to Atlas, then casts Holy Smite. but sadly Vurm's SR overcame. Based on his size, you know that he has a 15 ft reach. Because you are familiar with dragons, you also know that their long necks allow them to reach a bit further with their bite attack so you would assume, and correctly, that his bite has a 20ft reach.

Elyngael continues to make the strategic choice and keeps widdling down Vurm's HP, with the practically sure thing shot, instead of just praying and spraying. Brawn takes a chunk out of the illusionary Vurm.

Atlas lands a couple of nice blows on Vurm.

Through Melzat, Vamir casts Bestow Curse on Vurm, and with a heroic effort, makes it through the dragon's defenses. However the wise old coot manages to shrug it off. (rolled 37 on will save) Melzat continues to flail at Vurm, but fails to get past his tough scales.

Owen lets everyone know about last rounds feeble mind spell, but mentions he isn't sure how effective it will be against such an intelligent creature as a dragon. he then makes Osul disappear.

Osul begins summoning another friend, as his purple worm continues it's descent.

***********************************************************************

Atlas and Melzat take 1 point of fire and 2 points of electricity damage from Vurm's aura. The dragon decides to acknowledge Melzat for the first time saying, "You sent me walking firewood, how thoughtful, Mwahahahahaha!!!" He then takes to the air, hovering 30ft off the ground, triggering an AOO from Melzat, Atlas, and Armand's water elemental. he then casts a spell and centered on Y/12 a fireball explodes, hitting Melzat, Owen, Osul, Vamir, and Elyngeal for 39 damage, DC 17 reflex for half.

The illusionary Vurm screams in pain and anger as Brawn bites into his quasi-real body. "Look what you've done, you mongrel, you marred my perfection, how can I live with myself knowing my beauty is no longer flawless!" The illusionary dragon then disappears leaving behind a cloud of smoke. Those in the smoke cloud (see map) are completely blinded by the smoke.

Atlas was above the beast, flying, so as it rises from the ground he does his best to avoid it's wings. He still manages to take the fire and electric surge, but that is just a pin prick compared to those teeth. DM James: Please HOLD on posting....I hate to snatch victory from you guys, but something was missed that will affect the outcome of the fight. Essentially Vurm gets two saving throws once a day on any WILL based save and it's highly unlikely he'll fail two saves in a row, but I need Jeremy to make the change or get Jerry to approve me editing the post.

OOC... Fireball, and a few other spells are spell like abilities, and as such, innate abilities for Vurm, though he has a limited number of times per day he can use them. Sorry if I didn't clarify that in Friday's post.

Osul's worm arrival 2/8

Elyngael can't see through the smoke, even with her goggles, (The smoke even blocks true seeing) so she steps out of the smoke and fires on Vurm, sinking two arrows deep into his flesh. (Thanks for rolling even though it's basically an auto hit, because a 1 is still a miss, and a crit is to your benefit.) Brawn also moves out of the smoke and engages Vurm, though the big canine misses his target.

Armand's elemental lands a nice hit, as the cleric rushes over and heals Atlas, he triggers an AOO from Vurm, as he enters the dragon's reach. He doesn't have combat reflexes so Armand can cast his spell without problem, however the bite hits AC 38 for 30 damage. (AOO's have nothing to do with intelligence, but the fact that your opponent leaves themselves open for a free shot)

Owen gives himself some fire protection.

---Pending ---
Vamir successfully Magic Jars Vurm, taking control of his body.
---Pending---

Neshi blasts Vurm with another cone of cold, though the nimble beast is able to evade half of the damage. (rolled a 29)

Osul's new friend a T-rex arrives, who sniffs out and finds his new prey.

Possibility 1:
Melzat looks at Armand, but points at Vurm "Vamir is good. He is in there. Watch what he does." Melzat steps back a give the witch some room.

Vamir lands Vurm's body on the ground, rolls over on his side, and exposes his neck for a coup de grais.

Neshi sees Armand run and call out vamirs name and Neshi realizes he probably should clarify what's goping on.

Armand, Vamir should be ok, He has somehow managed to majic jar Vurm. He should be in control for the moment anyway...

If I understand the spell correctly, and my knowledge of it is theorectical at best. Vamir's being is currently inhabitaing Vurm's body and Vurm is trapped in an gem or jar somewhere on or near Vamir's body. I believe that if we go ahead and kill Vurm, Vamir will snap back to his body and Vurm will be dead...

I think....

Not completely sure what is going on, but getting the gist of it from the others, he prepares to end the dragon's life. His words are cold, those of someone doing a job that is unpleasant, but better than the alternative, "El, I get it, but it is quick, painless, and it not only saves us, but it saves everyone in the area. No one knows what might happen next, and if he managed to get away and kill more people because we didn't take this opportunity, well, that is worse than doing this in my book."

OOC... OK guys, here's the thing. As DM James mentioned yesterday, Vurm has a special ability to re-roll any one will save per day. It is mentioned in the fine print on the stat block, and I completely missed it. (who reads the fine print anyway?) James and I asked the PTB's if we should just let things lay as is, or if we should do a ret-con, or something along those lines, with my suggestion being giving Vurm his second roll today, and either breaking free from, or being trapped in the magic jar for the duration of the spell. In all honesty both James and I were fine either way, we were just wanting to give you guys the epic end game you deserve. Rob got back to me this morning, I suppose it would be evening for him, and suggested I use my idea and so without further ado, here is today's post!

DM James:It's a team effort here and it takes TWO of us to keep up with you guys. Had it been anything other than the final fight I'd have let it drop, but you guys deserve an uncontested win.

Osul's worm arrival 1/8

Neshi is shocked and amazed by Vamir's act. He makes sure people know what is going on.

Armand thinks Vamir may be a goner, and rushes to channel energy.

Vamir lays out some options.

Elyngael isn't into dishonorable executions.

Atlas tries explaining to Elyngael, that even thou a coup de grais my be honorless, sometimes it's for the best.

Osul agrees with Atlas, but wonders if it's possible. He dismisses his t-rex before it tries to scavenge Vamir's body.

(Rolled a 38 on the re-roll.) Just as Vamir is offering Vurm's neck to Atlas, and the fighter is preparing to do the dishonorable, but necessary deed of dispatching the dragon, Vamir feels his soul quake, as it is ripped out of Vurm's body, and forced back into his own. The moment Vurm, animal mind and all, is back in his own body, his animal instincts of fight or flight kick in. Instantly he fills the whole chamber with smoke, making it impossible for anyone, who can't see though smoke, to see. You hear a whoosh as the great beast takes to the air and flies away. A few minutes later, the smoke clears, and your suspicions are confirmed, Vurm is gone! A quick search of Vurm's lair and you quickly find, hidden behind the giant silver mirror, a small cache of loot. Within the cache, you find 3 staffs, a mace, a scimitar, a black iron longsword, a ring, a medium sized suite of dwarven plate (non-magical) and a chest containing 16,379 gp. You also have the lump of adamantine worth 5,000 gp and the silver mirror worth 5,000 gp

Armand coughs from the smoke and rubs his eyes. "He's gotten away." He ponders a moment. "On the one hand he's no longer a threat for world domination, and most likely his ability to summon monsters to send at the villagers has been neutralized. On the other hand we have a long winged lizard roaming the country side doing what animals do, to wit, looking for something to eat and a place to sleep. Also he's wounded so may be a bit peeved at anything coming near him."

He paces a bit while the others search the room. Then he snaps his fingers. "There's a spell I can use, I'll need a day of rest, but then we can track him down and properly end any reign of terror he may be causing. The spell is called Discern Location, then it can be combined with Find the Path. With Wind Walk we can get to Vurm despite him having any kind of head start. And since we know what his capabilities are, we can unload on him with spells and prep better to bolster our fighting types to really lay into him."

Offense or defense, both are helpful. I never made it to the Catacombs, so I'm a bit underpowered at the moment."

After looking through the treasure, because we all know the fortune part of fame and fortune is just as important to Atlas, he jumps into the conversation with Neshi and Armand. "Thank you both for the healing. Now it's time to go deal with this vermin. I'm ready when you are."

Osul dismisses his purple worm, just as it arrives. He then tries to figure out what the magical items are, managing to identify the Ring of Blinking.

Neshi hustles to Vamir's side to make sure he is OK. He asks how they should proceed as he identifies the 2nd and 3rd staff, the mace, and the Ring of Blinking.

Owen identifies the scimitar and the longsword, and confirms what has already been identified, though he is more concerned about Vurm. After looking around a bit, Owen finds places where Vurm's wings brushed the sides of the burrow, leading him to believe that he flew out the same way the Warden's entered.

Armand is relieved that Vurm is no longer a world domination threat, but is worried about what kind of problems a very powerful winged animal can cause to the country side. He comes up with a plan to track the beast, though it requires some sleep.

Brawn has no problem getting a good whiff of Vurm's scent, as the smell is literally everywhere, and Elyngeal is sure her canine friend has a lock on the smell. The ranger suggests Atlas take the Mace of Smiting to supplement his arsenal.

Vamir has a headache, but is otherwise unscathed by the Magic Jar ordeal. He tells Armand that he too can cast those spells, and doesn't need a day of rest to prepare them. He is eager to after Vurm, but is willing to wait if the party feels a day to recover spells and such would be prudent.

Atlas peruses the loot, and says he is ready whenever everyone else is.

**************************************************************

As the Wardens are going over the loot and trying to decide whether to wait until tomorrow, or head after Vurm now, the burrow begins to shake violently, and before anyone is able to react, the whole system of tunnels dug by Vurm collapses. Strangely, even though the Wardens can see that the ceiling is going to collapse on them, dropping several tons of earth, that would crush the life out of them, not to mention bury them alive, with no means of escape, as it is hard to cast teleportation spells when your mouth is full of dirt, and your hands are pinned down. the collapsing dirt miraculously stops just 30 ft off the ground, trapping them in a dome that is just big enough for Vurm to fit in. It doesn't take but a moment for you to realize that Vurm must have had some sort of contingency spell set up to collapse his burrow if anyone, other then himself messed with his treasure, leaving a nice little air pocket for him to teleport into to retrieve his loot. If the burrow collapse didn't kill the intruders, his bulk would crush them, as it appeared in the air pocket. obviously he never took into account a band of powerful adventures ever being a threat.

What do our intrepid do now? obviously the only means of escape is via teleportation of some sort. You estimate that you are about 800 ft below the surface.

Neshi is a bit relieved when he realizes he is only trapped and not dead. He only has one teleport left for today, and asks if anyone else is able to teleport the rest of the party. If not they will have to rest here tonight.

Armand remembers he has Longbranch's branch and wonders if it will take them back to the tree. There is but one problem with this plan. To activate the magic, in the branch, Longbranch instructed you to break the branch in half, which you did, and it should have taken you home, if the gods hadn't intervened. A quick detect magic will show that the two halves of Longbranch's branch only has a faint lingering aura, and is no longer a magical item. Though he is a bit concerned at first, he quickly guesstimates that there is about 12 hours of breathable air in the chamber, plenty for a quick 8 hour nap, plus time for breakfast, or to prepare spells, or both.

Elyngael tries to comfort Brawn, but ends up finding comfort in the big canine. She would love the Branch idea if it was possible.

Vamir can recall some of the party to the Tree, though it would be difficult to get the other half, since he would have to return to the underground chamber.

Owen reminds everyone that intercontinental teleportation isn't an easy affair, and recommends returning to the Harvesters encampment. (Due to the great distance, there are only two ways to teleport between the continents, Greater Teleport, and the teleportation pads in Hook City, and the Floating City, which connects the two communities.)

Atlas agrees with Owen

Osul also agrees with Owen.

*********************************************************

Does anyone have the means for the second teleport, or will you be spending the night? Either is fine.

FYI, Due to the distance to the surface being about 800ft, as mentioned in yesterdays post, you can use Dimensional Door to get to the surface, something your PCs, or at least Neshi and Owen would be aware of. It's range is 400ft + 40ft/ level which for a level 15 caster would be 1,000ft. BTW, the reason you never saw any fresh tracks in the burrows is because Vurm used DD to come and go, and when he dug the burrows he made sure he was within range for the spell, that and the summoning was done outside.

Armand figures his friends can get them to the surface, so he offers some healing.

Vamir corrects Armand reminding him that Word of Recall is not the same as teleportation.

Elyngael helps gather the loot and asks if they have a bag of holding. she mentions she can reduce Brawn's size tomorrow.

Owen regrets that he didn't prepare teleport, and suggests resting the night.

Neshi does the math and realizes that DD will get them to the surface, and that he would be able to cast it the appropriate number of times.

Atlas goes through the loot and feels the heft of the longsword. He asks if it's magical, but the fighter must be going senile, because Owen and Vamir just told him it was a Sword of Lifestealing, which contains very powerful magics.

Osul also admits to not being able to cast reduce animals today, but feels some fresh air would be lovely.

**************************************

So what will our intrepid heroes do? Will they spend the night in the very safe, but rather dirty dragon's lair, or head to the surface via the Neshi express? Without teleport, it would be impossible to make it to the Harvesters encampment today, so either way, it would require a night's rest outside of civilization. The only benefit of being on the surface, in the mind of your humble DM, would be the comfort of Armand's tree house, which obviously won't fit in Vurm's lair.

Armand helps stow all the loot, then prepares for either a night underground, or one topside.

Neshi suggests Armand should go in the first trip, so he can plant his tree house, and offers to take Brawn and Melzat in the first trip.

Elengael wishes to leave.

Vamir wishes to leave as well, and instructs Melzat to go with Neshi, and watch over everyone.

Osul is fine going in the second group , claiming in a worst case scenario, he can always burrow out.

*************************************************************************

Since the consensus is to head to the surface, I'll assume Armand will take Neshi's offer and suggestion.

Armand makes it to the surface, and as Neshi is casting his spell to return for the second group, Armand is planting his tree house. Neshi returns with the second group, and all the Warden's find themselves on the surface, and back in the tall grass. Looking around, you can see that the acid grass is now a giant crater, with what kinda looks like a giant snake print in the ground, slithering away from said crater, and you realize that the collapse went all the way to the surface, as this is the sink hole that was left behind. Vurm was nothing if not thorough, in his planning.

Armand's tree house is as cozy and comfortable as always, and you pass the night in peace and quiet. In the morning, you have a choice, head back to the Harvesters encampment, and let them know what has happened, warning them of a mindless dragon on the loose, or hope for some sign of Vurm's whereabouts, in hopes of tracking him down. What do are intrepid heroes wish to do?

Before departing the cavern Armand pics up a few stray scales and some of the dragon's blood from Atlas's weapon. Outside he sets up the tree house away from the cave in. And lastly before sleeping he will make sure everyone is fully healed (make sure to update headers as all spells are over).

The next morning he will rise early and pray for some appropriate spells. "We can't let something that big and destructive run loose in the wild as a ravaging beast knowing only to eat what it wants and sleep where it wants. He can't have fully healed yet. Remember, fire and electrical spells don't do much good against it." He will cast Hero's Feast for everyone's breakfast (d8+7 hp bonus=8)

Armand will cast Discern Location on Vurm (no save no spell resistance). "Good thing we still have that expensive mirror from the last time we had to do this." Armand will cast Scrying Greater using Vurm's blood and some bits of scale (Will would be 23 but since I have bits of him he has a -10, so he has a will save of 33). And then once he has the location he will cast Find the Path (has 150 minutes time limit).

"I have 1 wind walk spell, which will allow 5 of us to move really fast and catch him. If someone else also has one then we are in business." (wow their math is off they say 600 feet a round (6 seconds) and then have 60 mph in parenthesis. But really if you do the math 6 seconds x 10 rounds = 1 minute. so 600 feet x 10 rounds = 6000 feet in 1 minute, a mile is 5280 feet, that's way faster than 60mph. you're doing 60 mps.)

Before hitting the sack, Armand burns his spells to make sure everyone is healed up all the way, and he snags some bits of Vurm before heading out of the cave in. In the morning he casts some spells to touch base with Vurm. he offers to wind walk half the crew to get to the location quickly.

Vamir offers to wind walk the other half of the crew, and asks for a scale or two.

Elyngael is ready to go dragon hunting.

Atlas sees no need for the life stealing sword, and wishes to end the dragon ASAP.

Neshi sleeps well and is ready for the dragon hunt in the morning.

Osul casts control weather to assure that it doesn't rain, of course this is the Sargrass Plains, where it literally never rains, so 6 hours is plenty.

When Armand casts "Discern Location", the image of mountains made from red crystal come to mind, and he knows that Vurm is in the Crystal Mountains, hiding in a cave. When he casts "Find the Path", he knows to head due north. He has no way of knowing how far north they need to travel, of course, just that Vurm is hiding in a cave in the Crystal Mountains. When Armand casts "Greater Scrying" He sees Vurm sitting in a cave made of red crystal. The dragon seems to be focused on something in front of him, but whatever it is, you can't seem to see it. It's almost as if something is blocking the spell from seeing it. As you watch, you witness a large portion of Vurm's wounds magically begin closing. He isn't fully healed, as you can still see a few wounds that didn't close all the way, but he is most certainly looking better than he did. As you continue to watch, you see Vurm's face go from the face of a mindless animal, in the presence of someone he likes, to the face of someone with understanding, and you see him begin talking to whatever, or whoever, it is that seems to be blocking your spell. He appears to be having a conversation, and you can see his face getting angrier and angrier, until in fit of rage, Vurm flies out of the cave, and appears to be heading towards your location, which happens to be just outside the remains of his burrow.

Armand fills everyone in on Vurm's progress. Of course you have no idea how far the Crystal Mountains are from your current location, but by tracking the dragon via the scry spell, you shouldn't get caught flat footed. The only thing you do know, is that he is flying at a massive clip. He asks if the Wardens want to meet him half-way, or prep in their current location.

Elyngeal is all for waiting for Vurm's return.

Vamir is also in favor of waiting, but wonders how to deal with a flying dragon.

Neshi has a few surprises in store.

Osul also has a few surprises available.

Atlas is ready for some air based combat.

Armand suggests everyone give a list of buff spells, they can cast, and shares what he has available. (With all the knowledge checks, I would rule that you know that dragons get their spells like a sorcerer. That said, you don't know if he rested while still in his mindless state, or if that even counts as his rest period.)

Elyngael wants to try to lure Vurm to the ground and suggests threating his treasure. She says she can cast some spells on herself and Brawn, and if someone casts airwalk on Brawn, they can meet the dragon in the sky.

Vamir shares his abilities, and plans on trying magic jar again.

Owen is more concerned about Vurm's "friend".

Neshi lists his available buffs.

Osul shares his available buffs, and wonders how strong Vurm is, and how much weight it would take to end Vurm's flight ability. He wonders what would happen if Vurm was magic jarred, and baleful polymorphed.

So breaking it down...
2 scrolls of protection from energy CL5, - (that will give 50 degrading points of protection)

Vamir turns to Osul, "If I can magic jar him you can turn his form into whatever you like, and Ican return him to his new form. However, if Ican magic jar him I would think it would be better to just kill him and deal with whomever wiped feeblemind from Vurm." Vamir looks around at the surroundings, "Those of us that can heal should be on opposite side, and perhaps have the ability to fly. Atlas, Melzat, and Brawn will probably be physically attacking, and if so we should try and keep them on 3 sides in an attempt to minimize damage taken. If we see them as a triangle with Atlas at the head, with Melzat and Brawn at the wings then I suggest Armand and I try and remain opposite each other at the shoulder and opposite hip. I can use my spectral hand to pass along cures as necessary , and will fly where ever for heal. Neshi and Osul should cover opposite shoulder and hip from the healers. Of course this plan only works if we can get the beast to land for us, and there are no other players. If there is another joining Vurm, and he is a spellslinger them I suggest Atlas, Elyngael, and Armand take the fight to them. I will cast at least two spells on Atlas to help with resisting any spells, and spell effects, starting with this that lasts for a full day Just before the fight I will cast Protection from Spells on him. That will leave me 1 of my most potent spells to use against Vurm"

Vamir turns, and waves at Atlas casting Mind Blank on the fighter.

Mind Blank: The subject is protected from all devices and spells that gather information about the target through divination magic (such as detect evil, locate creature, scry, and see invisible). This spell also grants a +8 resistance bonus on saving throws against all mind-affecting spells and effects. Mind blank even foils limited wish, miracle, and wish spells when they are used in such a way as to gain information about the target. In the case of scrying that scans an area the creature is in, such as arcane eye, the spell works but the creature simply isn't detected. Scrying attempts that are targeted specifically at the subject do not work at all.

DM Jeremy Battle Map
Friday April 23rd, 2021 11:41:23 AM

Owen suggests they spread out, and reminds everyone that they have more spells than Vurm.

Armand suggests summoning a few air elementals, and wonders if they could combine their whirlwind attacks. (I had to think about that one for a bit, as the rule of cool leads one to think it should work. If the whirlwinds where created by the elementals and they sat back and controlled them, such as a spell, or spell-like ability, I would allow it , however, the elementals actually turn into a whirlwind, which would mean that the different elemantals would have to merge their bodies together, which unless stated in a stat block, would be a whole new ability, so it wouldn't work, in spite of the rule of cool. BTW since Armand is able to summon air elementals, he would know that their whirlwind abilities only effect creatures one size or more smaller then they are, but Vurm is colossal, and they are huge.

Osul asks for any weather suggestions.

Vamir says that if he is able to magic jar Vurm, the dragon could certainly be polymorphed into something benign, but suggests it might be better to just end him. He then offers some battlefield suggestions.

Elyngael asks for some protection for Brawn and says she will be where he is.

Atlas likes buffs, and suggests he, Brawn, and though he didn't say so, I would assume Melzat keep Vurm busy, while everyone else sends death from afar.

Neshi waits for the right moment, and then begins handing out buffs, and starts summoning some friends.

*************************************************************************

Some last minute planning and strategy discussions are made, as Armand monitors Vurm via his scry spell. Armand can tell the dragon is getting close, as he watches, the beast swoop down and snatch a pair of large sized animals (DC 20 knowledge nature check, Armand only, Highlight to display spoiler: {the creatures are prairie pigs} Vurm then climbs to a point that even an eagle would struggle to fly at, and activates his mirage ability. Soon everyone is able to see two dark specks, way up in the air. upon closer examination, the specks are dragon shaped, though they appear to be the size of a sparrow, due to the distance, and if it wasn't for Armand's heads up, the Wardens would have most likely not even noticed.

Atlas takes to the skies, after thanking Neshi for all the buffs.

Armand tells everyone that Vurm activated his mirage, and warns that a bombardment my be coming. He says he plans on buffing himself and go toe to toe with Vurm, and asks for stoneskin.

Neshi hooks up Armand with the requested buff, and continues to buff his friends.

Elyngael gives Brawn a growth spurt, and casts some buffs on him and herself.

Vamir joins in the buffing party, and gives Melzat a pep talk, re-assuring the walking willow, before he takes to the sky.

Osul takes on a more reptilian aspect.

*************************************************

Everyone watches, the two Vurm's get closer, when they are about 2000ft from the surface of the ground, the two vanish, just as you can see one of them react to Atlas' sun reflecting. A moment or two later, you can see two large sized animals (DC 20 knowledge nature Highlight to display spoiler: {They are prairie pigs}) plummeting to the ground. Vamir and Elyngael (Rolled randomly to determine targets) must make a DC 27 reflex check or take 36 bludgeoning/piercing damage, a successful save negates all damage. Everyone within 10ft of the two impacts are covered in blood and gore, as the animal bodies explode on impact.

Neshi summons some friends, that will arrive next round.

Atlas climbs another 30ft, and then asks if anyone has a visual on the Vurm's, as the dragon and his mirage disappear.

Armand asks anyone with true seeing active to scan the area, as he casts invisibility purge.

Elyngael identifies the critter bomb as a prairie pig, as she avoids getting hit by it. She uses true sight to scan the area, but doesn't find anything. She concludes that Vurm must be out of range for the spell to work. (Yes, Woodland Stride allows Elyngael and Osul for that matter to move normally in the grass, but not the crater.

Vamir also avoids getting hit by his pig. He looks around as he summons his spectral hand.

Owen prepares to take to the sky.

Osul realizes that the prairie pigs were about the size of bison. He tries to find Vurm with both nose and eyes.

********************************************************************

As everyone is scanning the area looking for Vurm, anyone with true seeing active watches as Vurm streaks into sight as he zeros in on the real Neshi. (true seeing) Vurm grapples the liontaur (rolled a 52 on the CMB roll). Neshi needs to beat a 46 to escape the grapple, and he gets an attack of opportunity. To those without true seeing, Vurm is still invisible, as he is out of Armand's invisibility purges range.

Vamir casts see invisibility, just in time to see Neshi break free from Vurm's grapple.

Elyngael alerts everyone that Vurm is attacking Neshi, and then she opens fire. Brawn is able to get an idea as to where Vurm is with his powerful nose.

Armand runs towards Neshi, getting within range for his invisibility purge to make Vurm visible.

Neshi swipes at Vurm, as the dragon grapples him, but fails to get past Vurm's thick scales. Through a heroic effort, he breaks free from Vurm's not so loving embrace. Breaking a grapple is a standard action, so he wouldn't be able to cast his spell, and break free in the same round. Please add markers for the summoned air elementals, and control them as you will

Owen casts true seeing, and sees Vurm attacking Neshi.

Atlas charges Vurm, landing a nice hit, taunting the dragon as he goes.

Dino Osul watches as Elyngael's arrows stop in mid-air, followed a moment later by the dragon becoming visible as Armand runs into range. The druid drops a quench spell on the dragon.

**************
Vurm takes a 5ft step back as Atlas approaches and says, "Oh I know exactly which breath weapon to use, ALL OF THEM!!! Here's one you haven't seen yet!" With that Vurm takes a deep breath and belches out a 60ft cone of acid hitting Atlas and Armand who take 91 acid damage (DC 27 reflex for half) After using his acid breath, Vurm activates both his elemental auras and his frightful presence (both are free actions). Neshi and Atlas both take 2 fire damage and 2 electricity damage, no save. Everyone within 240ft of Vurm must make a DC 24 will save or be shaken for 20 rounds

I assume the +4 vs fear from hero's feast will count on the frightful presence.

Armand dodges some of the acid breath. "Touch of indigestion there Vurm? Don't forget guys there may be a mirage of him lurking about."

Armand clicks his heals and moves again. (I assume that Atlas is not 90 feet up as Neshi is on the ground and Vurm attacked him). He then cast Holy Aura which should put Atlas, Brawn and one of the mirror images/Neshi in range.
Spell resistance 25 (d20+17) Vurm will not have to worry about being possibly blinded if he attacks us.

If there is no response in the crater he turns his attention skyward - overwatch sounds like a reasonable tactic for a second, invisible dragon. {Perception: 56!}

Armand makes a snide comment about Vurm's Acid breath, then moves forward some more and casts holy aura.

Since Quench was so effective the first time, Dino Osul decides to give a second go.

Vamir makes his fear save, and since Melzat is immune to mind attacks, (fear attacks are mind effects) he's just fine. He tries to magic jar Vurm, but the wise old lizard has no problem shaking it off. (Rolled a 36)

Elyngael and Brawn shrug off Vurm's fear attack and push the offensive. Brawn uses his new found size to reach out and bite a chunk out of Vurm, and it turns out that dragon meat is actually quite tasty, as Elyngael pin cushions the scaly beast.

Owen moves into position, and then casts cone of cold, but Vurm manages to avoid half of the ouch. (rolled a 27)

Neshi blasts Vurm with an icy explosion, but the beast avoids half the ouch. (rolled a 30) He then quickly casts disintegrate, but the dice roller seems to really like the multi-colored dragon, because he again avoids the brunt of the spell. (rolled a 34)

Atlas informs Vurm that he is about to meet Gargul, the steps up and lands another hit.

****************************************************

Knowing he is on the ropes, Vurm makes a last ditch effort to save his bacon. Concentrating intensely, he casts a spell (casting defensively, rolled a 35 needed a 27), and all magic within a 10 foot radius immediately shuts off, as he puts up an anti-magic field. All magic items, spells, spell-like abilities, and summoned creatures cease to function while within the field. Vurm then takes a 5ft movement to burrow underground.

Neshi suddenly feels like he is numb, with no sensation of magic running through his body. He takes it relatively quickly moving outward stopping for a second every twen feet or so to see if the magic is back.

IC: Seeing the magical effects wink out, Owen surmises what has happened. He says "Well, if that's how it's going to be..." He draws his masterwork dagger and flies above the shallow hole Vurm has dug. He lobs the dagger at the dragon, knowing that his attack is likely to miss or bounce off the dragon's hide. Attack roll: 27 (I was one off in the die roller; I don't think Owen has ever made a ranged attack with his dagger before). Damage: 5 piercing (also one off).

DM Jeremy Battle Map  3d6=9 ;
Friday April 30th, 2021 10:59:18 AM

OOC.. Apparently there is some confusion as to how burrowing works, so I added this from the rules. Note that Vurm didn't leave any tunnel, and is currently 5ft underground, making physical attacks impossible without some special means. When he dug his tunnels, he took the time to remove the dirt, as he was digging himself a lair.

A creature with a burrow speed can tunnel through dirt, but not through rock unless the descriptive text says otherwise. Creatures cannot charge or run while burrowing. Most burrowing creatures do not leave behind tunnels other creatures can use (either because the material they tunnel through fills in behind them or because they do not actually dislocate any material when burrowing); see the individual creature descriptions for details.

Armand uses the only weapon currently at his disposal, and verbally attacks Vurm.

Vamir decides to try to magic jar Vurm while the dragon is underground, but as the spells magic gets within 10ft of Vurm, it simply peters out, as it makes contact with his anti-magic field.

Elyngael takes some practice shots, (feel free to reclaim the arrows you shot last round) and Brawn snaps his jaws in frustration of his quarry being gone.

Atlas finds terra firma the hard way. (Vurm is 30 feet tall, so if Atlas was at his top, he would have dropped 30ft, taking (3d6) 9 damage )

Neshi backs away from the anti-magic field, as he is uncomfortable with how it makes him feel.

Osul begins summoning

Owen is ready to chuck his dagger, if Vurm shows his head.

*********************************

Just as everyone is getting ready to figure out how to fight without the aid of magic, and how to fight a burrowing enemy, everyone feels their magic return. In a blink of an eye Vurm is no longer underground, but over 800ft over your heads. You realize that he just used dimensional door, and had to drop his anti-magic field to do so.

In a loud booming voice you hear Vurm say, "You've bested me twice, believe me when I say you will never have a chance for a third!" You then see Vurm look up to the sky and shout out, "Gargul, creator of Chromatic Dragons, I beseech you! May I never run into this band of adventurers again, for they have struck a fear in me like nothing has ever done before. I will quit this region, never to return, as I fear my life is forfeit if I were to do so. May vengeance find them and swiftly, though by some other hands than my own, as they have wounded me and it will take a decade for me to recover fully.

With that Vurm takes off flying due north at a speed that makes him look like a rainbow colored streak in the sky.

OOC.. DM James will be jumping into the drivers seat on Monday. Have a great weekend!

A huge Cloud Giant weilding a gargantuan morningstar appears the crater, but he sees no opponent.

'Osul reverts to human shape, points to the sky and calls out, "Zaxzar, your quarry has fled!", and then moves into the crater.

To the wardens he asks if we are going to pursue, as he is not convinced that quitting this region is sufficient.

Armand stands in the air with his hands on his hips. "Well....That's very anti-climatic. I mean really, right guys." He looks down at everyone. "And he did swear an oath to Gargul. So I don't think I can go after him. If he breaks his oath then Gargul will summon him for judgement."

He slowly walks down to earth. "Nope I think we're done here. Best we can do is report back and let everyone know the threat is gone. Then at last, we can return home. It's been awhile since we were back. No telling what has happened." He pauses to consider. "As to that being that blocked the scrying and restored Vurm. Really don't have any way to find him right now, and searching a mountain range in unfamiliar territory does not sound appealing. I say we're done. If that being is a threat then in one way or another we will eventually be involved. But at this point I don't think we need to go looking for more trouble when none is evident."

Agreed to all that has been said, I really was hoping to finish that off. Armand, As for whatever it was that was aiding aiding Vurm, I expect we won't have to look for it. I expect it will find a away to find us.

Now are we sure that Vurm, is what was sending those creatures through that were harassing the villagers?? I mean we haven't really found a portal or anything....

Atlas begins to laugh, which then turns into a full blown belly laugh that brings tears to his eyes. Each time he thinks he composes himself, he starts up all over again. In between it all he manages to gasp, "What the heck was that?"

After some time passes, he finally calms down enough to talk, "Well, I guess he won't be bothering this land again. I wish we could have finished him off, but even more so I wish we had a bard with us. I love telling a good story, but no one will ever believe me when I tell them about this one."
