Adlevar's Cove

DM Jeremy Battle Map
Friday October 16th, 2020 6:01:58 AM

The plan turns out to be quit simple. Osul and Neshi turn themselves into air elementals, Armand casts air walk on himself, and Owen is already in flight. While these four take to the sky, Elyngeal, Brawn, Melzat, Duir, and Vamir, remain on Terra forma.

The trail is covered in treant tracks, as Elyngeal easily determines. There are tracks going in both directions, and upon closer examination, she spies some tracks that appear to have been left by a substantially larger treant, and she concludes Adlevar has been here, and fairly recently based on the freshness of his tracks. Adlevar's tracks seem to be heading to the clearing Owen mentioned. That's no guarantee that he is there, of course, as he could have easily just continued on, but it is clearly a sign that the Wardens are on the right path, and that their prey is in the vicinity.

After traveling around 400 yards, the Wardens come across the clearing Owen mentioned. It is clear that they are expected, and one can assume that though the previous battle was swift, the din of battle was enough to alert them to an enemies approach. The clearing is shaped like an oceanic cove, with the path being the narrow inlet, and you can quickly see why both Eberyon and Alfreda referred to this place as Adlevar's Cove. The cove is guarded by 6 treants, and 9 animated trees, but there is no sign of Adlevar.

Flying upward and forward a bit so he has a clear line of sight, Neshi lets fly targeting the orange treant with a chain firebolt that striks orange first and spread to the other treants. Quickly activating his gaunlets he send a second quickend chain firebolt on the same path.

Chain firebolt - 48 points relex DC orange 24, others DC22 for 24 points
2nd Chain firbolt (quickened) - 42 points relex DC orange 24, others DC22 for 24 points

Neshi brings a double shot of fire, to the treants. The first round everyone fails their save, however on the second round the green, blue and purple treants save for half. Armand is hanging out I the air, waiting for Vamir and Osul to do some chit-chat, but when Neshi brings the fire, he decides to cast true sight which instantly reveals an invisible Adlevar. Elengael puts Brawn on guard duty, as she lets fly on the purple treant. Osul goes on the prowl for Adlevar, but since he is invisible, he doesn't see him. Vamir asks Melzat if he would stand guard, something the plant friend id more then happy to do, as Vamir tries to determain if they are in a safe place, but of course their really is no such thing as a safe place in a battlefield.

Fearing the bearer of the flames, the treants target Neshi with some rock throwing, with two actually managing to hit the wemic turned air elemental. (Hit ACs 27 and 28) Neshi takes 28 from the first rock, and 26 from the second for a total of 54 points of bludgeoning damage. Armand casts true seeing just in time to watch Adlevar hurl a rock at him that hits him squarely. (Hits AC 33) the cleric takes 41 damage from the impact. When the treant lord attacks, he turns visible, and everyone can see him. He is by far the largest treant they have ever seen, standing nearly 80ft tall. The animated trees all move forward. The green and yellow attack Brawn, while the orange and black (using it's reach) attack Duir. The green tree managed to hit Brawn (Hit AC 35), but the big canine is able to dodge the green's slam attack. The orange tree misses Duir (nat 1) but the black tree has no problem hitting the temporary treant, for 16 bludgeoning damage.

(OOC dang it all forgot to adjust for elemental changes, well that will teach me...)

Thankful that he had earlier cast his stoneskin spell, Neshi doesn't take the full brunt of the rock attack.

Recovering quickly, Neshi cast reverse gravity on the area catching orange treant, green treant and Adlevar in its effects and then sends a quickened chain firebolt streaking through each treant and Adlevar.

Reverse Gravity - This spell reverses gravity in an area, causing unattached objects and creatures in the area to fall upward and reach the top of the area in 1 round. If a solid object (such as a ceiling) is encountered in this fall, falling objects and creatures strike it in the same manner as they would during a normal downward fall. If an object or creature reaches the top of the area without striking anything, it remains there, oscillating slightly, until the spell ends. At the end of the spell duration, affected objects and creatures fall downward.

Provided it has something to hold onto, a creature caught in the area can attempt a Reflex save (DC 25) to secure itself when the spell strikes. Creatures who can fly or levitate can keep themselves from falling.

Chain firebolt - reflex DC orange 24 everyone else DC 22 49 points damage reflex save for 1/2 dam.

Osul tries looking for Adlevar again, and since he is now visible after attacking, he sees him with no problem, he then cast fire storm. (I'll assume you added Adlevar as a target, since Osul was able to see him as soon as he attacked Armand.) Everyone including Adlevar fail their save and take full damage. Armand casts Blade Barrier, and everyone but the red treant failed their save, which kills the purple and yellow treants and forces everyone else to move. He then begins to summon a new friend. Neshi succeeds in reversing gravity on all the treants, including Adlevar, then follows up with some burn. the blue treant is the only one the make his save, but it's not enough, and the only treant left standing is Adlevar. Elyngael changes her target to Adlevar and sticks three arrows into the treant lord, as Brawn goes total defense. Vamir tries a diplomatic approach with the trees, but gets no reply.

With Adlevar hanging out in the air, due to Neshi's gravity reversal, that leaves the trees. Since the rest of the treants are dead, and the trees haven't taken root, it is easy to assume that these are trees that have been animated by Adlevar, and as such are loyal to him. the trees move about a bit. Using it's reach, the purple takes a swing at Melzat, but misses the intelligent plant. The green tree takes a swing at Brawn, and barely manages to hit the wolf (Hit AC 35) Brawn takes 20 bludgeoning damage from the slam. The yellow tree reaches out and attacks Elyngael, slamming the she-elf for 22 damage (hit AC 38), The black tree attacks Brawn but misses. Both the orange and white trees attack Duir, but only the orange connects with it's slam for 21 damage

Neshi doesn't want to burn Adlevar's body up prematurely, so he blasts the treant lord with a cone of cold, and a lightning bolt. Adlevar fails to make either save. Osul proves once again that he is a true Lord of Lightning, as he electrifies some of the trees. Somehow the orange and white trees managed to save for half. The residual flames from last rounds fire storm did 19 damage. Duir puts the hurt on the yellow tree. Elyngael, with visions of Atlas in her head draws her sword and along with Brawn attack. Even though she only manages to land one slash, she is happy to discover her longsword has no problem slicing right through the tree's damage reduction, and does it's full damage. Surprised to see Adlevar falling up, Armand asks his new friend to make some firewood, as he shows Adlevar the light. with the attacks from Neshi, and residual damage from Osul, Armand's Searing Light is enough to end the treant lord, further proving that the trees were animated by Adlevar, as they are still able to move. Vamir is about to cast a spell on Adlevar, but when he watches his friends finish him off, he holds his turn, as Melzat goes on the offense. (Wade save your spell slot and hero point, and don't forget, every weapon, including Melzat's and Brawn's amulets of mighty fists temporarily has plant bane on it, I rolled the extra damage for you this round.) Owen gets himself ready for the next round of battle.

With the Master dead, the trees seem to strengthen their resolve, and press their attack. the purple tree move across Melzat, Vamir, and Armand's spaces. Melzat and Vamir have to make a DC 27 reflex for half damage from the trample damage of 26. Because Armand is in the air he was able to avoid the trample. Melzat, Vamir, and Armand all get an attack of opportunity. The green tramples Elyngael and Melzat causing 26 damage (DC 27 reflex for half) and Elyngael and Melzat each get an attack of opportunity. the yellow tree tramples Elyngael and Brawn, giving them each an AoO, and 21 damage (DC 27 reflex for half) The black tree tramples Brawn causing 23 damage and triggers an AoO (DC 27 reflex for half) The blue tramples Armand's fire giant for 22 damage (DC 27 reflex for half) and triggers an AoO. The grey, white, and orange trees all land a slam attack on Duir for 18, 15, and 24 damage.

Neshi is dissapointed to see the animated trees continuing to battle, as he was hoping that they would stand down with the death of Adlevar.

Sighing, he once again moves a bit and then hoping for more positive results, catches the white, grey, orange, and red trees in another area of reverse gravity.

Neshi tries reversing gravity on the white grey, orange and red trees, and though they try to dig their roots into the ground, to avoid the effect, all 4 find themselves falling up. Armand reminds everyone, and Neshi in particular, that they need to make ashes out of Adlevar, and having him float away wouldn't be good. He then drops a flame strike on the black grey and orange trees. Somehow the black tree manages to avoid half the damage, though the grey and orange trees take the full blast. Armand's tall friend continued his assault against the blue tree. Vamir heals Melzat of some of his wounds, as Melzat attacks the green tree. (Wade, don't forget, that Melzat has evasion, so if he makes his save, instead of taking half damage, he takes no damage, Also he should have just gained improved evasion, so even if he fails his saves, he still only takes half damage.) Owen casts crushing despair on some of the trees, but unfortunately, plants are immune to mind-effects.

The purple tree attempts to slam Melzat and lands a blow (hit AC 38) that causes 23 damage. The green tree lashes out at Vamir with an attempted slam attack, but the blow deflects off the witch's armor. The yellow tree reaches out to slam Melzat, and just barely lands a blow (hit AC 31) causing 20 damage. the black tree attempts to slam Brawn landing a blow causing 18 damage. (hit AC 32) The blue tree attempts to slam the fire giant landing a blow that causes 16 damage (hit AC 32) The grey, orange, white and red trees are getting a bird's eye view of the forest, and they don't seem to be enjoying the experience, as they wiggle their roots, hoping in vain to take root somewhere.

Yesterday's ret-con for Osul:
Duir attacks Purple, while Osul begins casting a spell.

Neshi does what Neshi does best, and brings the heat. only the blue manages to make his save. Armand casts a spell on purple, and bright white flames, that give off a powerful holy aura, consumes the whole tree in a matter of seconds, leaving nothing behind, not even a pile of ashes. With one mighty swing of his ax, and two more available if need, Armand's fire giant drops the blue tree. Elyngael's sword arm is getting tired, but Brawn lands a solid bite on the yellow tree, ending it once and for all. With the sudden absence of the purple tree, thanks to Armand's spell, Duir takes a 5ft step and attacks Mr. black. At that same moment, Tiny appears, and takes a swing at Mr. black. Melzat turns Mr green into toothpicks.

With all his buddies either dead or floating in mid air, Mr black realizes his time is short, and chooses to take root and go dormant, losing his animated status forever.

All thats left are the four trees, floating 10ft off the ground. it is easy to determine that a 10ft drop isn't going to kill them, so how do our intrepid hero's wish to proceed?

OOC...After reading the spell description over and over again, looking for the height that the subjects of the spell ascend to, all I could find was these lines: This spell reverses gravity in an area, causing unattached objects and creatures in the area to fall upward and reach the top of the area in 1 round. and this, If an object or creature reaches the top of the area without striking anything, it remains there, oscillating slightly, until the spell ends. Twice it mentioned area, but never mentions what the area is, but looking up between the range and duration, it says Area: Up to 1 10ft cube/level This tells us that Neshi can currently make 14 10ft cubes, and that since they are 10ft cubes, they are 10ft high. Thus the trees and Adlevar's body are floating 10ft off the ground. In either case, though it may not have an epic an ending, with a massive crash landing at the end, this is a sweet spell when used against creatures who are melee based, or need to pick up rocks to make ranged attacks, such as treants and animated trees. You can really control the battle with this puppy!

Neshi suggest giving the trees the option to live as trees, or become floating bonfires. Osul casts command plants with the intent to make them take root, and the white, grey and orange trees immediately try to comply, but since they are floating 10ft of the ground, even though they are trying, they can't make their roots touch the soil. However the red tree seems to have avoided the compulsion. Elyngael sheaths her sword and, taking Brawn with her, gets into a better position for her bow, just in case. Armand asks if someone could talk to the trees, as he drops his blade barrier. Vamir thanks Melzat for his hard work, and lets Armand know that that is exactly what Osul was attempting. he tells Armand he doesn't have a bucket, but can craft one real quick if needed. Owen grumbles in frustration over the failure of his mind-affect spell, but realizes his complaint is silly, so he readies a fireball, and waits for an answer. of course these are but animated trees and not treants, so that would require magic. (OOC...I don't understand why a highly intelligent plant creature, or undead for that matter is automatically immune to mind-affects, just because they are a plant or undead. In my opinion, if it has an Int score, it should be affected, however, Pazio gave special abilities called traits (Undead traits, plant traits, ooze traits, ECT) to the various creature types, as universal abilities, to that type, and in the case of plants, and undead, that includes immunity to mind affects)

All but the red tree are compelled to take root, and are only awaiting the opportunity. (The compulsion lasts a day per level) What's going through the red tree's mind is a mystery, since no one bothered to ask him yet.

Neshi tells everyone to stand back as he reverses the reversed gravity. Osul, Duir, and Tiny all are in ready positions. Elyngael ready's an arrow. Armand asks his giant friend to be ready. Vamir steps back and asks Melzat to be ready.

Even though the Wardens took ample precautions, it turns out that they weren't needed, as the moment the trees roots touched the soil, they dug in and took root, even the red, un-compelled tree. Apparently Mr Red, wished to continue living, even if it meant going back to being an ordinary tree.

With the din of battle officially silenced, everyone can make a DC 20 perception check. Highlight to display spoiler: {You hear the sound of a faint voice saying, "Please help me". Looking in the direction of the voice, you spy an old stone well. (bordered in yellow on the map)}

Neshi keeps his streak of failed perception checks going strong. Osul retakes human form as he rushes to the well and asks who he is talking to. A feminine voice answers "Nadea" Osul suggests some light and offers to go earth elemental to attempt a rescue. Elyngeal too investigates the well, and when she looks down she sees a medium sized, beautiful women with pealescent skin and long black hair. (DC 20 knowledge nature Highlight to display spoiler: {She's a Nereid}) The women has a rope ties around her slender waist, with the rope going up through a pulley at the top. The pulley would normally be used to haul water to the surface, but it clearly has been used for a more nefarious purpose by Adlevar and his crew. Armand dismisses his fire giant, and then makes a stone bucket, with functioning hinged lid, which he fills with Adlevar's ashes. Vamir is about to craft a bucket, but Armand beat him to it. He to goes to investigate the well.

Anyone who investigated the well can attempt the DC 20 knowledge nature check to identify Nadea's race. Nadea doesn't seem at all dismayed by the water, which appears to be well over her head, but one may assume her plea for help comes from a desire for freedom.

Do our intrepid heroes free Nadea then question her, do they question her, and then free her, or do they leave her to her own devices?

There is some debate as to what to do with Nadea. Most seem in favor of helping her, if, in fact, she needs help, however as Neshi points out, nereids can control water. Osul thinks freeing her and bringing her to Eberyon would be wise, while Armand points out that Eberyon probably knows about her already, and that maybe she's imprisoned for a reason. Vamir wonders if Nadea is here as some sort of back up plan, or revenge plan left by Adlevar. Finally after giving her male folk some warning, as they could be in far more danger than she, Elyngael looks into the well and asks, Why do you need help?"

Nadea looks up at Elyngael and says in a sarcastic manner, "Well, I am stuck in a well!" Nadea composes herself and says, "Sorry, Adlevar has held me here for so long, trying to break me, that I seem to have a hard time controlling my emotions. I've heard your conversation, and yes we nereids can control water, and I would have done so long ago, but my magics are blocked by an anti-magic aura. You can easily prove this of course, assuming you have some spell casters among you, or perhaps an everburning torch. Of course you can take my word for it, as this rope isn't exactly comfortable tied around my waist. I promise not to use my powers against you, and if you wish to bring me to Eberyon, I have no complaints, in fact I would love to ask the king why he allowed Adlevar to keep doing his evil, for as long as he did!

'Osul doesn't step back - confident in his abilities to resist fey powers, ignore poison, and if worst came to worst, adopt a shape that breathes water, or doesn't need to breath at all, he remains shoulder to shoulder with Elyngael.
"Well, it is quite difficult to talk when you're tied by the waist down a well.", he suggests.

"Actually, Nadea, Eberyon already explained this to us. It was a little hard to hear, but the gods stayed his hand on this. I have my own reasons for not liking the idea of immortal powers being subject to the will of the gods.", he adds with a slightly forced grin, and waits while those wanting to keep a distance get one, and for Elyngael's go ahead before raising Nadea (the Neriad) from her nadir. He is glad to see that the well structure has a wheel and axle, rather than just relying on a simple pulley.

Osul seems to have a bit of understanding towards Nadea, as she struggles with discomfort from the rope tied around her waist. He explains to her why Eberyon hasn't been able to act, to which she says, in an exasperated tone, "Figures, first they tell him he has no right to be angry, when The Jericho built the Wold over the top of his creation, while he was sleeping no less, and then they tie his hands so he can't even defend his own realm without the help from outsiders" Osul is also happy to see that the proper equipment is there to make releasing her easy.

Armand wonders why Nadea dosn't just climb out of the well using the rope, to which she answers, "I've tried, but there is some sort of slippery substance on the rope which prevents me." Taking a closer look at the rope, and sure enough the rope has been greased. Probably to protect it from the elements, but maybe Adlevar thought that far ahead, hard to say for sure. Armand cast detect magic.

Elyngael asks Nadea why Adlevar was holding her prisoner, and the Neriad answers, "My sister is the leader of our people, and has strong influence among the other aquatic fey. Adlevar was hoping to break me, in hopes that somehow through me, and my relationship with my sister, he might gain a foot hold among the aquatic fey, thus strengthening his base. I would have never worked of course, as I would have rather died then serve such as he!" She readies a cold iron arrow, as she tells her friends they can release her if they like, though she would rather leave her and go talk to Eberyon.

Neshi also casts detect magic.

Owen waits to here what Nadea has to say, in answer to Elyngael.

Vamir pulls his rod out in prep for the worst.

When Armand and Neshi cast detect magic, they find a strong aura of abjuration, which is in line with anti-magic fields. Beyond that, they don't sense anything, or more accurately, they sense less than anything, almost like theirs a black hole sucking all magic away. (OOC... That's how I've always explained, the workings of, anti-magic fields to myself and others.)

Though it has been determined that she has been telling the truth, Osul ponders the sister, though he gets the vibe that Nadea loves her sister, and was telling the truth when she said she would rather die then be used as a tool against her. The consensus is to bring her up, but just before Osul starts cranking the wheel, Nadea shouts up, "Sorry I didn't mention it earlier, but my fate was kinda on the line, and I didn't want to come across as though I was trying to bribe you all, but Adlevar has been storing a chest down here that I assume is filled with valuables. In the anti-magic field, detect magic don't work, because all the magic is sucked away, and besides, theirs a padlock on the chest, so I have no idea what you'll find, but I can carry it up for you if you want.

OOC... Instead of wasting a day waiting to determine if you want Nadea to bring you guys the loot, I'll just go on the assumption that the answer is yes. Please feel free to ret-con role play the answer to Nadea in your posts, if you so desire, and if for some reason you don't want the loot, I can ret-con that tomorrow.

After the affirmative is given to retrieve the chest, Nadea dives under the water, only to surface a few moments later with a small hook in her hand. The hook is attached to a rope, and she hooks the hook on a small loop tied in the rope that is tied around her waist. The end of the rope is around the Neried's waist, with the loop tied above that slightly, so that the weight of the chest doesn't cause Nadea any more discomfort.

As Osul begins turning the crank Nadea slowly emerges from the water, followed by a iron reinforced wooden chest. When Nadea gets to the top of the well, she quickly unties the rope from her waist, and hops lightly to the ground. She looks at the group of adventurers, and thanks them for freeing her. When she sees concern on the faces of the Wardens, and possibly fear, she says, "My people have a bad reputation, I know, but we aren't evil. Many men lust after our beauty and that lust is their downfall. Why can't people admire something of beauty without feeling the need to own it? I can look at a lovely bird or sunset and admire the beauty, but have no desire to make them mine, I can even look upon a handsome male without feeling such a need, but some, not all, but some men decide in their hearts that when they see us they have to have us, and we simply refuse to be owned. It would be far better if they could learn to control their carnal desires, so they can admire beauty without the need for ownership."

After Nadea is free, the chest comes to the top, and with a grunt, Osul places the iron reinforced, padlocked chest on the ground. the lock is of good quality and requires a DC 30 dismantle device check to open, or the chest can be broken into with either a DC 23 strength check, or it has 15 hp, with a hardness of 5.

As the Wardens decide how they wish to open the chest, Nadea asks to take her leave, claiming a desire to return to her people, though her tone alludes to the fact that she will stay if the Wardens wish her to.

The Wardens all agree that Nadea can do as she pleases, though they offer her the chance to accompany them to see Eberyon. She says in answer, "Perhaps I will see you there soon, but I must go see my sister, as I'm sure she is worried sick, not to mention enraged at my captivity. If I know her, she has been working at mustering the aquatic fey, to bring war to Adlevar, and I must let her know that she can stand down, and that all is good thanks to you adventures. There is one thing I would require though. Now that I'm out of that anti-magic field, I can feel that my shawl is in that chest. I am about to share a closely guarded secret, among my people. Our shawls and us are linked, and our very existence depends on them. We can make another, though it takes time. I believe the new one would be complete before I perished, but I would suffer greatly in the process. If you would be the heroes I believe you to be, would you return to me what Adlevar stole, in hopes of bending me to his will?"

At this time you realize that Nadea is nude, though, since the males in the party have decided in their hearts to see beauty without lusting after it, her nudity seems natural, well for a nereid anyway, for a woman of one of the noble races, probably not. Which is why until Nadea mentioned her shawl, no one seemed to notice.

Armand offers to break the lock with his adamantine hammer, as Melzat steps forward to help, if needed. Vamir keeps his distance from Nadea, and though it is clear that Nadea notices, she gives no indication that it bothers her. Owen casts detect magic on the chest, and though the chest radiates no magical auras, there is a variety of auras coming from inside.

Armand breaks the lock, and much to Osul's joy doesn't damage the chest, which as he pointed out is a good quality chest. Armand opens the chest as Elyngael offers Nadea her cloak, but what is on top, inside the chest is all Nadea can see, and she acts as though she doesn't even hear the ranger's offer. On top of the loot in the chest is what appears to be a garment made of water, but before anyone can say anything, The nereid dives forward and snatches up her shawl, which wraps itself around her body, seemingly on it's own, covering Nadea's nakedness. "I apologize friends, I haven't seen my shawl for over a month, due to that villain's evil, and as soon as I saw it I couldn't contain myself, my need to be reunited with it, clouded my senses to everything else, even your kind offers. As you can see, I no longer have a need for your cloak, but thank you for your offer, malady, and yes there are trees much like the ones around us good sir, and the sooner I can reunite with my sister, and our people, the happier I will be."

Under the shawl there are are some items that Owen quickly identifies as:
3 pale green prism ioun stones, 3 orange prism Ioun Stones, a ring of blinking, a sun blade, a staff of healing, a fully charged wand of fireball (CL 10), and a fully charged wand of lighting bolt (CL 10)

What is the next step for our heroes?

Osul dismisses Tiny and asks Duir to protect the Warden's in his stead, giving him permission to go where he wishes for the remaining time after that. He casts a spell, and even though Vamir wonders if it is right or not, he and Nadea enter a tree, only to exit a different tree along one of the most picturesque ocean coastlines Osul has ever seen, Nadea is almost giddy when she sees the water, and is about to jump in, but before she does, she thanks Osul for all he has done for her, and gives him a peck on the check. Then turning she runs into the water. After she has swam out a hundred feet or so, she turns, waves goodbye to the Druid, and then dives underwater, presumably to go to her people.

Meanwhile with the loot identified, some of the items are claimed, some are stowed away as party treasure, and some are destined to be sold at the Catacombs. With Armand's stone bucket filled with Aldevar's ashes, the remaining Tree Wardens begin the 2 day trek back to Eberyon's palace. after a few hours into the first day, Eberyon himself with Osul by his side step out of a tree in front of them. Obviously Osul beat them back, he was using magic after all, and as everyone finds out, Eberyon was so happy to hear the news, from Osul, he couldn't wait to thank and congratulate the Wardens, so he took Osul and meet them on the road.

"You have done me, my people, and the Wold's Cradle itself a service that we can never truly repay, and for that I thank you most sincerely. I had feared war was going to come to my realm because of that fiend, but not only did you defeat him, you freed Nadea, who should have arrived at her sisters home by now. Shrena is a good leader of her people, and is well respected by the other aquatic fey, and many non-aquatic fey as well, but her only weakness is Nadea. the two are inseparable. When Adlevar captured Nadea, Shrena came to me for aid, and my heart broke as I told her my hands were tied, by the gods. She told me she understood, but would see her sister rescued one way or the other. Your actions saved the lives of many fey, and ended Adlevar's rein of terror, and so again I thank you! Please come with me and let us return to my palace."

With that, Eberyon walks back to the tree he and Osul stepped out of, and without casting a spell, steps into it, beckoning the Wardens to follow. The tree exits in front of the palace where the Wardens first met Alfreda, who happens to be there waiting for the return of Eberyon and the Wardens. The pixie is delighted to see you all, and tells you your rooms are ready and baths can be prepared if you so desire. He also tells you that in a couple of days, a feast is going to be held in your honor by order of the king himself.

OOC...You have time to finish your sheets, I guesstimate that this module will last another week or so, then it will be at least a week before you will face any combat in the module I'm currently adding the finishing touches to, and should be sending off for review by the end of the weekend. For you casters that are struggling for a feat idea, spell penetration, and greater spell penetration are always good choices, as are spell focus and greater spell focus, and if you like summoning friends, augmented summoning is nice. I hope that helps. You are right though, when limited to core rules, the options dwindle quickly, outside of core, give me a day, and I could give you a list a mile long.

The vote for baths is victorious, and Alfreda assures Neshi that they have a tub in his size, and that it is already in his room, though Armand reminds everyone about the reason they came to the Cradle in the first place, as Osul passes on Nadea's thanks, minus the peck on the cheek. Eberyon bows to Armand's wisdom and says, "That is right, In my joy I forgot all about that, it is but early afternoon, let us make our way to the garden, and plant Deeproot's child. There will still be plenty of time for a good long soak and scrub, before dinner is served.

In the garden, everyone gathers around the dead tree Guyrent. Eberyon says to the tree, "You were a dear friend Guyrent, and it saddened me when you passed. I couldn't even bring myself to deal with your remains, until today, as death must make way for life. Farewell my friend!" The fey king then reaches out his hand to touch the tree, and Guyrent's remains burst into flames. The fire is so intense that everyone must step back a few feet to avoid being burnt by the radiant heat. Due to the intensity of the flames, it lasts less then 10 minutes, and Eberyon's friend is reduced to ash, leaving a hole where her roots once were. Eberyon waves his hand over the hole, and the ashes all come together in a ball, elevated slightly off the ground, as the hole refills itself. when all is said and done, there is no sign of the burnt root hole, and only a hole big enough to hold Guyrent's ashes, as well as the ashes of Adlevar, remaining. With another wave of his hand, Guyrent's ashes settle into the hole. Eberyon then turns to the Wardens and says, I leave the honor of mixing the ashes and planting the seed in them to you."

Owen uses magic to stir the ashes, as Armand adds Adlevar's ashes to the hole. Osul hands Elyngael the seed , who we will assume plants it in the ash mixture, then the Druid uses his magic to water the seed, even going so far as to create a gentle rain, and insures it has a fruitful future. Neshi is impressed by the way his friends use their magics to get the job done, as Vamir reaches out to the seed to let her know what is going on. Whether the seed hears or understands Vamir, it is hard to say, because one might liken the experience to talking to an infant, or at least that is the vibe the witch gets from the experience.

After the seed is planted, Eberyon with a broad smile breaks the silence and says, "That is done, and now all that remains is to wait, shall we adjourn to the palace? Your hot baths should be waiting, and since our druid friend has decided to create some rain, it will be much drier." He gives a hearty laugh at that, giving the impression that the rain doesn't affect him in the least. When you look at the immortal power, you see that the rain is defiantly hitting him, yet for reasons unexplainable, his body, hair and clothing remain dry. Even though Eberyon isn't getting wet, the Wardens definitely are. It is a gentle rain, to be sure, but it is a rain designed to soak the soil gently, and if it soaks the soil, it will soak the Tree Warden, and you find it doesn't take long and you are all soaked to the skin.

When you return to the palace and your rooms, you all see a steaming bath is waiting along with plenty of towels. As he was assured, Neshi finds a tub perfect for one of his size waiting for him in his room. As the Wardens slip into their tubs, something marvelous happens. the waters begin churning, and you can feel blasts of water hitting and messaging all the right places, to ease any sore muscles, or joints, and the whole process leaves the bather feeling refreshed and stress free, not to mention relaxed, and pain free, oh and free of dirt and grim as well. If you examine the tubs nothing seems unusual, they just look like claw foot tubs, made from polished copper, but they defiantly radiate a magical aura if anyone chooses to check.

Delighted by the magical bathtub, Owen examines it carefully. Spellcraft: 47. Yes, that's a natural 20 on my bathtub check.

After a long, relaxing bath, Owen towels off and changes clothes. He is in high spirits when he rejoins the rest of the Wardens: "'Osul, your rain was nice, but I must say that that bath was even better! I need to get my hands on one of those tubs."

Elyngael decides to preform her rendition of singing in the rain, minus the singing, dancing, and over-all preforming part. She keeps an eye on the ashes to make sure they don't wash away, though she soon realizes that the gentleness of the rain, and the absorbent nature of the soil, are such that there are hardly any puddles, and she is certain that the seed is safe. This gives her the opportunity to further explore the magnificent garden. As before she sees flowers and foliage the likes of which she has never experienced before. Sure there are varieties she is familiar with, but the vibrancy of the colors, not to mention the numerous shades of color, are something not seen in the Wold, and the experience is breathtaking.

The boys all enjoy their baths, with Vamir and Owen wondering how they can smuggle one home in their luggage. Owen looks his tub over, and realizes that it has a aura of strong evocation, and mild divination. He concludes that the magic works similar to a hydraulic push spell. Though instead of one big push, there are several mini continues jets. How the jets seem to instinctively know just where to hit the body, the Wizard is unable to determine, but he is certain that the divination aura is coming from that ability.

When the boys finally exit their baths, they find soft and fluffy towels to dry off with, as well as comfortable bath robes to wear. As the Wardens go to get their clothes, they find them missing, and replaced by exceptionally fine, and perfect fitting, garments to be worn in their stead. upon each pile of clothing, is a small note that says: Your garments have been sent off to be laundered and repaired. Feel free to borrow these humble garments in the meantime, signed Alfreda. None of the rest of anyone's gear is missing, though Armand finds his armor has been polished and oiled, and everyone else finds their bags and other gear have been cleaned and cared for.

Everyone minus Elyngael, Brawn and Melzat, who are still in the garden, eventually make their way to the common sitting room, where a fire is crackling in the fireplace, and their Pech friend, Prisley is behind the bar to offer pre-dinner refreshments.

Elyngael finally decides to leave the rain and head inside. She figures that the natural rain has done as much as the bath would have, and decides to take a small nap, after toweling herself and Brawn off. When she awakens, she finds her armor has been polished and oiled, and the rest of her gear has been cleaned and cared for as well. She finds two lovely sets of clothing where her wet and soiled clothes were with a note that reads: "I didn't know if you would prefer a dress or shirt and trousers, so I left a set of each type of garment. Your clothes are being laundered and repaired, and will be returned when finished. Please feel free to wear these humble garments in the meanwhile. Alfreda"

Armand offers up some healing to his friends, as Owen orders a hot apple cider. Prisley asks it he would prefer a fresh or hard cider, then after pouring the appropriate cold beverage into a mug, the pech walks over to the fire place, and retrieves his hot toddy poker, and uses it to quickly heat the cider to perfection.

Eventually Alfreda arrives and escorts the Wardens to the dinning hall. the room isn't quite as full as it was the first time they were there, in fact it is just Eberyon and the Wardens. When asked, the fey king says the normal guest of the hall are those who are in his employ, and due to the feast in the Tree Wardens' honor tomorrow, the hall is in preparation, so they are dinning elsewhere. The food and drink are as spectacular and plentiful as before, and the Wardens are free to eat their fill. After dinner, Eberyon mentions that if the Wardens need anything, or even desire something, they should but ask, and if it is possible, they will relieve, and then he takes his leave. As the Wardens adjourn to the common room, the fire is still crackling in the fire place, and Prisley is their to take any drink or other requests.

Everyone settles in for after dinner chat and lounging. The chairs in the common room are beyond comfortable, which along with the fireplace makes for a very relaxing atmosphere. Armand asks for a Hot Toddy, and is rewarded with one of the best Hot Toddies he ever tasted. Obviously the whiskey used was of superior quality to anything he has experienced before today, coupled with the finest of spices, which Prisley grinds fresh, left you with a work of art in the glass. Owen enjoys his hot cider. It is clearly made from freshly pressed apples, as it still has a cloudy appearance. The variety of apple or apples is something he can't say he recognizes, but the beverage, and one would assume the apples themselves, are like nothing available in the Wold. Elyngael orders a red wine, and as Prisley pours her glass, the room is filled with an amazing aroma. On appearance the wine is everything you want to see in a high quality wine. Taking a sip the ranger finds a fruity front note that isn't too sweet, and finishes slightly dry, making it the perfect wine for everyone's taste, as it is perfectly balanced, coupled with it's amazing flavor and aroma. Vamir is in super chill mode. Osul is concerned about the feast and at first just opts to enjoy the comfort of his chair. Finally he orders a pumpkin hot toddy. Prisely has a look of confusion cross his face, that lasts but a moment, and then that aha look replaces it, as he asks, "Would you like that with actual pumpkin, or just the spice blend usually associated with pumpkin?" Whatever the answer, he starts with the same high end whiskey that he used in Armand's toddy, then freshly grinds the spices. If Osul wants pumpkin added, he adds just the right amount then hits the mug with the hot poker, creating the perfect drink. I can't believe someone ordered a pumpkin spiced beverage, I suppose it tis the season LOL! Seeing the look of concern on the druid's face, as he hands him his drink, Prisley, the good bartender that he is, asks, "Is there something wrong, and is there anything I can do to help?

Atlas: Highlight to display spoiler: { You and the Woldian Heroes who were all hand picked by Eberyon have finally finished the mission given to you by the Fey King. It's been a long and arduous campaign, with more then one visit to Gargul. Thankfully Atlas was never one of the reasons for the visit, but as companion to those less fortunate, he was required to accompany the fallen as is usually the case. The task is complete, and the Wold is a slightly safer place than before thanks to the groups heroics. Though not the leader, Atlas quickly became well liked by the others, as well as well respected, so much so, the assigned leader often asked for the fighter's advice. Atlas and the rest of the band of heroes have finally returned to Eberyon's Palace in the Wold's Cradle. They are covered with the grime of war and for the most part slightly exhausted, but happy to be done and able to return to their former lives. Are they changed? Maybe, and only time will tell if Atlas is still the boisterous fun-loving person, or if the conflict effected him somewhere deep inside. (Trey this is completely up to you, if you wish to roll play this in the future, completely optional) As they approach the palace you can see that some sort of hub-bub is happening, and the place has a festive air to it. As you, and the others approach a male pixie, middle-aged, receding hairline, and wearing coke bottle glasses, meets you. You immediately recognize him as Eberyon's butler Alfreda, and the pixie seems excited, and asks, "You've returned, so is the mission complete?" Atlas and the others nod the affirmative, and the pixie claps his hand in excitement as he says, "The king is going to be so pleased to hear this, I'll fly ahead and let him know of your arrival, and I'll send you someone to escort you to the king. A few minutes later, a female gnome arrives and begins casting prestidigitation on the heroes, cleaning them up and mending their clothing. Once done she takes a step back and says to herself, [b]"That will have to do." Then to the heroes she says, "Please follow me!" The gnome leads the group into the palace's dining hall where a feast is taking place. }

Everyone else:
Everyone enjoys their sit around the fire. Their industrious little bartender willing and able to attend to even their smallest requests. Finally heads start nodding, Is it due to the alcohol, relaxing atmosphere, exhaustion of the day, or likely, a combination of all the above, the Wardens one by one excuse themselves and then turn in for the night. The next morning awakens to a beautiful day, and even though the Wardens aren't comfortable with the whole "Feast in their honor" thing, the day seems to go by quickly, and finally it's dinner time. The dining hall is beautifully decorated, and the multi-colored ivies that cover the walls seem even more vibrant than normal. The Wardens are seated first, at the head table next to Eberyon, and once the fey king and Wardens are comfortable, the guest are paraded in. These guests are the leaders and their guests from all the different fey people groups, and they are brought to the head table to be introduced to the Wardens and offer their thanks for the removal of the Adlevarian threat, Since this isn't their thing, and The Wardens don't know any of these people, it seems like mostly a formality. Finally the last of the dignitaries are ushered in. Two stunningly beautiful women wearing water shawls. you instantly recognize them as nerieds, and the leader's guest is none other than Nadea herself, who give Osul a mischievous wink. the leader is introduced as Shrena, who places a small chest on the table in front of the Wardens, opens it and says, "As a way of saying thanks for your effort and returning my beloved sister to me, please except this gift." Inside the chest are the loveliest black pearls you've ever seen, and it just so happens that the value is equal to what ever is need to make WBL.

The food and drink are amazing and seemingly limitless, and everyone is enjoying themselves to the fullest. About midway through the meal, Alfreda flies in, obviously in a hurry. He flies over to Eberyon's side and whispers in his ear something the Warden's can't make out, but the affect is amazing. Eberyon goes from happy and festive to even happier, and stands up in his excitement. "Let them in! Let them in! This feast just became a double celebration!"

More chairs are brought to the head table, and then a group of people are ushered into the hall. Everyone turns to look at the newcomers, and even though Eberyon is excited to see them, none of the dignitaries seem to know what's going on, and the fey king isn't saying anything. this group of people all carry the trappings and attire of adventurers, but based one the style of their clothing, is is clear that they are from all over the Wold. Not knowing what is happening, the Wardens give the group the once over to try to figure out why they are being honored, and why they are here. as their eyes scan the people. one face stands out, one face they recognize, it is the face of Atlas.

"You know, it has never occurred to me that there could be a life other than adventuring. I have no family, other than you all. I have no real home, other than the "Tree". And all my skills and training are geared toward helping others and surviving on my own...

Neshi trails off and and when his glass is empty gets it refilled.

When the different dignitatires arrive, Neshi is polite and nods to each as they are introduced but a genuine smile crosses his face as Nadea and her sister arrive.

As he sits down and begins to enjoy the unlimitless food, which again make him smile, Neshi is on his third full plate when he notices Alfreda hurridly fly in and over to Eberyon and whisper something in his ear. The first thng that runs through Neshi's head is that there is some emergency and they aren't going to get to finish their meal, when Eberyon seemingly goes manically exuberant and announces the arrival of new, but unexpected geusts.

With great interest, Neshi watches with the others as the group of mixed adventurers is brought into the banquet Hall. Moments later a grin splits the wimics face as he sees Atlas among the party members.

OOC... I can't lie, Atlas' reunion, and the way you role-played that brought a huge smile to my face, and maybe a bit of moisture in my eyes. I love being your DM, you guys made my weekend! Everyone gets a hero point for making the DM tear up.

After a very warm, and apparently, in the case of Elyngael, a bit violent reunion, Eberyon is dumb founded as to how to proceed for a moment, after all it's not everyday that he sees a she-elf tackling a human, and then laying one one him. The king of the fey quickly regains his composure and breaks out in a hearty laugh, "Welcome home heroes of the Wold, your efforts, though a secret, have saved the Wold much suffering, and for that I thank you. please join the Tree Wardens and I at this lovely banquet. Oh and Atlas, I believe you probably better sit with the Wardens, if you don't, I think their may be rioting." With that Eberyon lets out another hearty laugh and then address the room, "Eat, laugh and be merry my friends, both heroes and guests, for today is a day of celebration for multiple reasons. The Tree Wardens have saved the Wold's Cradle from a grave threat, saving it from facing certain war, the Woldian heroes did what they did to save the Wold, from future suffering, and now a grand reunion of friends, or based upon the looks of things, I guess I should say family. Can anyone give me a better reason to celebrate?" Eberyon appeared to want to say more, but is interrupted by a loud cracking sound, that appears to have come from outside the palace. The fey King runs to the window, and after looking out, he turns and says, "Wardens, you better come with me!" He then races out the back door, towards the garden. When the Wardens reach the door and look out towards the garden, they see a 40ft tree standing where the seed was planted. Like Guyrent, the former tree who stood in that location, this tree looks identical to the tree carved on the signet emeralds that each of the Warden's wear, as a prize from the conquest, of the dragon at fire mountain.

Unsure of what to make of the Crack, Eberyon's request and then hurried exit, neshi begins preparation of a spell just in case as he hurries to the exit, following his patron.

Once outside and in the garden, Neshi stops and stares mouth hanging open for a moment as he doesn't quite believe what he is seeing.

"Umm, well, I certainly wasn't expecting to see this..."

Armand then endeavors to catch up with the king. "Well I've heard of growth spurts but I think this is most unusual. I defer to those of our party that is more knowledgeable about things evolving nature and magic."

Atlas files away this moment of reunion as one of the highlights of his life. He returns everyone's affection as warmly as it is given and for the slightest of moments he forgets the grumble from his tummy and all the amazing food laid out. However, as is the way of The Wardens, another surprise interrupts their merry making.

One thing is for certain, he didn't lose a step while off galivanting around with others. At the sound Atlas looks about to see if there is reason to be worried. When he catches sight of the King's reaction he springs to his feet and draws out his sword to prepare. Running to the King he straps on his shield, but then quickly comes to a halt next to the King outside. He follow's everyone's eyes and sees the tree, but cannot contain himself, "So, that's a nice tree, but by the looks on your faces I am missing something.
An invisible lich? An evil Ent? Come on, don't leave me standing here looking stupid."

He moves as close to the tree as he is permitted, before speaking in Sylvan, "We have flown, and swam, and taken many forms together, and we were asked to bring you here to flourish. If you can speak, what would you have us call you?"

DM Jeremy Battle Map

Everyone is a bit dumbfounded as to how a seed can become a 40 ft tree in but a moment, though Owen has no problem expecting the unexpected here in the Wold's Cradle, especially when dealing with a child of Deeproot. Elyngael asks Eberyon if this is his doing, but the fey king simply shakes his head and says, "No, I am as amazed as you all. My guess is we are dealing with a combination of 3 things. First we have the latent magic found in the very fabric of the Cradle, or in this case, the soil, second we are dealing with a child of Deeproot, and that is deep magic of it's own kind, and third our good Druid here did cast plant growth on the seed. All together that is a major cocktail of magic. Of course I could be wrong and if so your guess is as good as mine. What amazes me the most is how she is the spitting image of Guyrent, who used to stand in her place!" Meanwhile poor Atlas, not privy to the events that led up to this moment, is searching for a foe, until Osul informs him that the tree he sees before him was the seed of Deeproot (the Tree) but yesterday.

Vamir tries communicating with the tree via speak with plants, and Osul tries the old fashion method of just using his voice. The new tree, speaking Sylvan, answers much like her brother Longbranch, verbally, though with a slight feminine voice. "Of course I'm here, where else would I be? I have no name yet, since my roots haven't reached into the Wold to connect with my father yet, as such he hasn't given me a name yet. I've been watching you Wardens of the Tree in my infant state, or as you would call it my seed form, for a long time, and for reasons I can't explain I can remember much of what I saw in my infancy. In those memories one thing stands out, and that is that my father Deeproot, trusts you, and so I too trust you and I ask that you present me with a name." Eberyon smiles and says, "You have been given a great honor, as the naming of a tree, especially one of Deeproot's people, is something I don't believe I've ever heard done by a short lived mortal before. A true honor indeed, and one worthy of the Wardens of the Tree!"

"I do so love the idea of finding a proper name for the offspring of Deeproot and brother of Longbranch, it is such an honor" He quickly starts going through names in his head and jumps when he hears Armand mention one he was just thinking. "I like that Armand, it gives a sense of hope. I was first thinking Sunleaf, but I was also considering Brightleaf. It seems to me that the other obvious parts of a tree are taken, so why not focus on the part that exemplifies life; the leaf. And how does a leaf grow? The sun, or in abstract, when it is bright out."

Many names are thrown out, as the daughter of Deeproot listens patiently. When Elyngeal apologizes, the tree chuckles and says, "Think nothing of it, I would be a pathetic tree indeed if a little push was enough to uproot me, I understand your need for assurance. I, myself, have no understanding of why I had such a growth spurt." The tree says to everyone, "I don't believe my name has to follow in my father's and brother's footsteps, however, I do like the family connection. and you have come up with some great ideas, even those that don't follow in my family tradition are names one can be proud of. As of now their are two who feel Brightleaf is a good name, and due to the conditions here in the Cradle, like the rest of the plants here, my leaves are more vibrant then they probably would be in the Wold, making it a fitting name, but considering my location, Greatcrown would also be a logical choice. What do the rest of you Wardens say, I have no preference so name me what seems right."

OOC... Really, name the tree whatever you like. There will probably be a quick mention added, of the names and locations of Deeproot's offspring, in the Tree of Parting geography/history page that Jerry, Robert, myself and a few others worked on a few months ago. Here's your chance to leave a lasting mark on the permanent geography of the Wold! We will go with whatever the majority chooses. Armand begins to think that maybe the tree should name herself, as Neshi abstains from participating, apparently trusting his friends to pick the right name, but Osul comes up with a compromise between Armand's and Owen's ideas, and suggests Brightcrown.
Every one seems to agree that the name is fitting, based on her family's history of descriptive names. With her bright green canopy, or crown, plus her location in the court of the fey king, there is no doubt that the name describes her, and it kinda has a ring to it. When they ask the tree what she thinks about the name, she pauses for a moment, then says, "Hmm, Brightcrown, Brightcrown, yes I like it, I think it suits me fine, so I will claim the name Brightcrown. Thank you Wardens of the Tree, I understand now why my father trusts you so. It must be the quick growth spurt, which thankfully has stopped, otherwise I'd be an old tree, on my way to death, in an hour or so, but I'm feeling tired and in need of much rest. If you don't mind I need to hibernate, for awhile.".

Eberyon quickly chimes in, "You have done well, Bright crown is a splendid name for a child of Deeproot, and the fact that she likes it makes it all the better. Brightcrown, take your rest, a good hibernation will make you feel like a new tree. Well, technically you are a new tree, but you know what I mean. Now my friends, let us leave our tired friend to her rest as we adjourn back to the feast in your honor. your fighter looks as though he is going to faint away from lack of nourishment." With the last bit, Eberyon lets out a chuckle as he turns to return to the palace, the waiting guests, and most importantly, to Atlas anyway, since he hasn't had any yet, the food!
