A great day is spent as everyone admires Brawn. Atlas digs a pit for the pig, and Varmir pitches in, while Elyngael takes a much needed nap. Armand heads to the Catacombs, and Neshi puts Otaktay's alchemy book in the the alchemy lab, all the while Owen barely comes up for air, so engrossed in his studies, that he hasn't even taken the time to share what he's working on with the other Wardens, or even Isabella.

The pit is finished wood is added and lit, and the pig is set to roasting. the smell of roasting pig fills the tree, and the Wardens anticipate a fantastic meal. When it's dinner time, all the Wardens, including Owen gather in the dinning hall along with Owen's family, Wiz-Bang and a handful of invited guests, including Vamir, whom Atlas continually tells isn't a guest, but a member. A grand meal is had and everyone enjoys themselves completely, time and again complementing Elyngael on her harvest, and Atlas and Varmir for their hard
work.
As the night draws to an end, the guest all leave, and as the Wardens begin the task of cleaning up, they are interrupted by a knock on the door. When they answer the door Miles is there with a man who has all the signs of poverty. Miles apologizes for the late intrusion, but explains that he feels that the Wardens will want to hear what this man says, then he takes his leave. as the Wardens usher the man indoors, and into the light, you see a man who's clothes have been repaired on multiple occasions, with patches repairing patches. His hair is well kept, as one who is trying to keep his dignity in spite of his situation, but the man is skin and bones, and obviously hungry, as he eyes the left over pork and other foods still on the table longingly.

Atlas leaves the introductions to the others while grabbing a big slice of meat and some fixings that he puts on a plate and shoves into the man's hands. He then quickly finds a cup, fills it with ale, and hands it over to the man. "You might as well have some of these leftovers while you share your story." He gives the man his best welcoming smile.

Owen is delighted by the food: in his efforts to study he'd forgotten to eat for most of a day. He digs in heartily with his family, the Wardens, and everyone else.

Once Atlas gives the man some food, Owen asks "What news do you have for us, sir?"

Vamir eats heartily and listens to the various conversations around him. Vamir stands as the man enters the room, and silently passes the various serving dishes to Atlas as he prepares a plate for the stranger. Vamir quietly begins to clear the table as the man eats to give him a bit of time to center his thoughts.

Armand smiles at Neshi's appetite and manages to eat is fill in a slightly more refined and stately pace. As he is getting ready to help gather things up, Miles enters and informs them about the visitor. A Seeing the man eyeing the food, he is about to suggest that he help himself when Atlas takes care of that.

As the Man starts to eat, Armand quietly begins introductions.

"Please continue eating while we at least introduce ourselves so that you know who it is that you are addressing. My name is Armand, The gentlemen who fixed your plate and gave you the meal are Atlas Sunowl and Vamir Herven. The young lady and the wolf there is Elyngael Noldoryn and her companion Brawn. The Gentleman in the robe is Owen Marcellus and the that furry rug over by the fire is Yurr'Neshi.

And what should we call you Friend?"

Elengael, tired but content in a way she hasn't been since Khan died, Nibbles at her food, with one hand, letting a few yawns seep through. while the other hand is almost unconsciously stroking the fur of Brawn's neck. Every now and again she pauses in her eating to make sure that several nice cuts of meat, manage to fall into to Brawn's mouth.

As Miles and their visitor enter Brawn lifts his head to see who is entering, a low rumble in the back of his throat and looks sideways at Elyngael to see if there is any kind of threat from these two new folk. She nods her head as Armand introduces her and with her hand reassures Brawn that everything is currently alright.

Atlas and Varmir see to it that a meal is set before the gentleman who introduces himself as Lief Crewe who is about to break into his story, but the smells and sights of the food is simply to much for him to bear. He starts his meal trying to show restraint, but after his first bite, a look of ecstasy crosses his face as though he was eating a meal far superior to anything he has had in a long time, if not ever, and he simply can't contain himself, as he tears into his meal with a gusto that even makes Neshi jealous.

As the Wardens are waiting for Lief to finish his meal, a bat flies into the room, through a window left open to let the cool night air in, and lands on Armand's shoulder. attached to the bats leg is a small piece of paper. Armand removes the paper, and the bat immediately flies back out into the night. Unfurling the paper reveals a note written in a elegant hand which reads:

A curious bit of news I felt you and your friends may find interesting. Though I haven't made it to the Scab to deliver your letter yet, everywhere the caravan goes we seem to hear rumors of an awakened chimp that has been captured and forced to fight, as a gladiatorial slave by a traveling gladiator troop. What I find most interesting is that the rumors go on to say that the chimp fights like a druid. Normally the thought of such barbarism would make my skin crawl, but if this chimp is who I think he is, well I have yet to determine for myself if this is justice or not. I will keep you informed as I gain more information, having a caster who can get animals to deliver messages in the caravan is very helpful.

PS I've already per cured a few books for your collection, and am looking forward to delivering them, though it won't be for a month or two, depending on how trade goes.

Your friend,
Fredorian

As Atlas watches the man eat he grabs another plate for himself. It is really good after all. He waits patiently, eating and watching the man.

When the bat flies in and Armand reads the message Atlas sniffs loudly, but doesn't say anything more.

Armand tells everyone what the letter says. "I don't know if I like the idea of someone being powerful enough to force otakatayaal, whatever, to be a gladiator for them. Sounds like he still might be trouble in the future."

He looks over at Atlas. "Tsk tsk Atlas, you must learn to judge people by their actions not their relatives."

He turns to Lief Crewe. "Now how may we help you sir?" Do you require a place to rest?"

Elyngael is happy with Brawn's response to the strange man. He growled a warning, but waited for her command. She rewards him with a chunk of rare meat fed from her own hand. She watches the bat messenger closely, and is stunned by the content of the letter. "Otakatayaal will be trouble until he is dead!" Elyngael makes it obvious that revenge is still not far from her mind.

Neshi raises an eyebrow as the man digs into the food, though having been hungry before he understands the feeling and the reaction.

As the message is read about the ape, Neshi pauses for a moment.

" Now let's not jump to conclusions, it may be another awakened ape from this crew that has been captured and being forced to fight. One way or another we are going to need to check into it."

DM Jeremy
Wednesday June 26th, 2019 5:50:19 AM

There is much debate about what to do with the information received from Fredorian, concluding with Neshi wisely stating that they shouldn't jump to conclusions, (Always a wise choice) though everyone except maybe Vamir, who hasn't had dealings with Otaktay yet, agree that Otaktay is something that will eventually have to be dealt with.

Lief finishes eating about the same time as the Wardens conclude their debate, and after briefly chiding Atlas for judging Fredorian based on his father, and not his merits, Armand asks Lief how the Wardens can help, and whither or not he needs a place to stay.
Lief begins by saying, "You've been so kind already, how can I ask for more, but I can't afford a room and would gladly except a place to sleep for the night, but only if it's no trouble. I do have my bedroll, and can sleep outside if needed". He then goes on to say, "On behalf of my village, I would like to hire you", and with that he reaches into his satchel and pulls out a bag, which he dumps out on the table revealing a small quantity of raw platinum ore. a quick appraisal estimates the value at 100gp, and though it is chump change for a band of experienced adventures, it is still a tidy sum, which seems strangely out of place for a man fitting Lief's description. The look on Lief's face leads you to believe that he believes he is offering great wealth to the Wardens.

In response to Armand, Atlas shakes his head. "His father was manipulative and was known for playing the long game. If I have that in my blood and I want revenge on the people who I blame for his death, then I cozy up to them until I can hurt them the most. Otherwise, I stay as far away from them as possible. I'll never trust him and if I'm wrong in that then it is something I can live with. It isn't like I'm going out of my way to hurt him, so no harm is being done."

As for Lief, Atlas plans to leave most of the talking to Armand, but he does chime in for a moment so as not to ensure that the man doesn't give up the life savings of the village for their service, "Let's hear what is wrong with your village before we talk about payment or hiring. We're The Warden's of the Tree, which also involves the surrounding areas. Even though your offer is very generous, if we take the job it will be for the good of the Tree and the Wold. We won't accept payment."

Atlas defends his distrust of Fredorian by reminding Armand that Gaston was a manipulator, and if Fredorian blames the Wardens for Gaston's death, then playing nice would be a possible means to find the ideal time for revenge. He does admit he could be wrong, and since he hasn't hurt him, there is no harm in being prudent. The fighter makes it abundantly clear to Lief that the Wardens won't be excepting payment if they take the job.

Armand makes a joke about not paying in rice, but everyone gives full agreement to Atlas that no payment will be required.

Vamir is overwhelmed that the renowned Tree Wardens are willing to take the time to listen to one such as Lief.

*************************************************

A noticeable look of relief crosses Lief's face when the Wardens refuse payment, as he begins his tale. Well, I suppose I should begin by saying that I come from a small village located in the Red Hills. A number of years ago we were a prosperous community due to the the platinum mine just outside of town, but when the vein of ore dried up, so did our prosperity. Most have left, but those of us who stayed have done so because this is the only home we have ever known. Well, almost two weeks ago, a child went missing in the abandoned mine, of course we sent in a rescue parties, the boys father and uncle were included in the first group, but when none of them returned, we were at a loss. Normally we would assume the death of the loved ones, and mourn the losses, but for some reason we keep hearing the boys voice, from time to time, coming out of the mine, pleading for help. We aren't adventurers just common good folk trying to survive in a harsh reality, but we've been praying to Ffloy for guidance, and we decided to hire a band of adventures to try to unlock the mystery of the mine, and save our loved ones if possible. Can you, I mean will you help us?

"Hmm, the Red Hills?" Armand turns to the group. "Anyone know where that is?" Then he calls to James, their butler/cook/steward, "James, do we have any maps in the library?"

He turns back to Lief. "Have you noticed anything strange around your village lately? Anyone pass nearby like a traveling trader, gypsy or the like? Have you had any trouble with thefts of food lately?"

He pauses to think and then adds, "Has the mine had a history of any strange occurrence?"

Well the Red Hills, if I remember correctly, are East of us. There is a portion of it that is South of us but the majority of it is to the North of us (Knowledge Geography DC 20). Lots of the littler folk live in the area but the area has been known to house quite a few of the Giant folk as well.

Elyngael thinks about the Red Hills location. (Knowledge geography d20+10=23) "If I went through the area it was long ago with my parents. They may have had a contact there trading for the platinum. Something might look familiar if I was to see it again, but right now I'm concerned about a child in danger. Then his rescuers disappearance. It's been too long ago already. Armand asks where the Red Hills are, and both Neshi and Owen chime in that they are not to far. Neshi even gives a brief description of the inhabitants. Lief nods his head in agreement when the location is ascertained, and adds, "My village is populated by mainly halflings, but as you can see, he says referring to himself, "There are some humans , and a handful of half-elves to boot".

Armand asks Lief if any strange activities have been noted of late, or if the mine itself has a history of strange going ons. Lief shakes his head and says, "Honestly we're a fairly plain community, nothing out of the ordinary ever seems to happen there, well until the recent disappearances of the boy and his rescuers of course".

Vamir asks if Lief brought anything that belongs to the boy for a scrying attempt, but Lief claims he never considered such a thing, and you notice a bit of frustration rise up as he berates himself under his breath, saying, "Lief you fool, why didn't you think of this, you knew that they have magic users who can do magical searches, which could shed some light on the situation".

Elyngael, always the strait forward one, says she is more concerned about the boy and his rescuers then geography lessons, claiming it's been too long already, and that the Wardens need to do what they can, even if it's only bringing peace to the good people of the village.

Atlas keeps his words to himself, but nods his agreement with everyone.

After Lief is done berating himself, he thanks the Wardens once again for their generosity, and willingness to help. The man is so moved that he even breaks down in tears of thankfulness. When Lief is able to regain his composer, he looks up at the faces of the soon to be heroes of his village, a look of deep gratitude is on his face, but you also notice that he has all the tell tale signs of someone who is exhausted.

Armand looks into renting horses and discovers that the stables are currently full, so there would be plenty to go around if the Wardens choose the route, but wonders if walking would be better. OOC... Sorry if there is some confusion, but Lief is one of the few humans living in the predominantly halfling town. BTW he's in his early to mid 50's and sports a goatee in case you were curious.

Elyngael is willing to ride but much prefers the feel of the ground under her two feet. She also sees to Brawn's needs.

Vamir senses rain in the future, which isn't always a bad thing, then makes his preparations for the day. He then goes to meet with the Wardens to decide the means of travel, and departure.

Atlas loves a fine walk, but under the circumstances, he believes that time is of the essence, and so he goes to retrieve Sabre, his warhorse.

Owen gets himself ready as well.

Lief looks at the efficiency with which the Wardens prepare and is more then a little impressed. Armand ponders the problem. Once upon a time he had a horse. It was Gaston's horse that the party managed to acquire when Gaston used magical means to elude them. Alas that horse was lost when the party was visiting Plateau City and then were so suddenly transported away.

A horse would speed their journey, on the other hand the party has a tendency to wander into situations where mounts are themselves endangered. Never-the-less speed seems to be in earnest. He will arrange for some mounts for everyone.

He turns to Elyngael. "Will you be needing a mount or are you going to ride Brawn?"

Vamir has only ridden a horse once, and he is sure it is going to show when he sits in the saddle. Vamir quietly asks for an older, and calmer horse, and when it is provided carefully watches as it is saddled. Vamir places his left foot in the stirrup, and throws his right over the horses back. (Handle Animal 9 and Ride check Nat 1) Vamir promptly falls off the horse, and quickly looks around to make sure no one is laughing. Dusting himself off Vamir, takes a deep breath and prepares to do it again.

Atlas looks down from Sabre as Neshi mentions teleporting. "It feels good to be riding again, Sabre doesn't get the attention he deserves. However, teleporting would certainly be quicker. I won't back down from what I was saying before, speed is of the essence."

DM Jeremy

Neshi finds the idea of a liontaur trying to ride a horse comical, but since the land speed of a horse and a liontaur are comparable, he would have no problem keeping up with his friends if the are on horseback. He does ask Lief how far his village is from Ednemoor, or Traders Corner, saying he may be able to speed up the travel time, to which Lief answers, "Well let's see, Traders's corner is about a 1/2 a days walk from home, why do you ask?"

Armand is ready to make the arrangements to procure mounts, but before he does he asks Elyngael if she will need a horse or if she will be riding Brawn.

Vamir practices horse mounting, but things don't go quite according to plan. Luckily our the only thing our budding greenmage hurt was his ego. thankfully there was no one to witness his humiliation.

Elyngael let's Armand know that she will be riding Brawn, claiming that Brawn would prefer it to spending money on a horse. She is ready to go and asks if she should scout ahead a bit.

Owen agrees with Neshi that the eluded teleportation could be much swifter.

Though he loves the idea of riding Sabre, Atlas doubles down on the need for speed, and feels teleportation would be best if feasible.

"So if we teleport obviously we cannot take the horses. What if whatever is wrong with the mine is part of a larger problem where having some mounts would be beneficial?" He pauses and then continues. "Also that is a fairly powerful spell. While having that on tap is good, doesn't that limit what other possibilities you have in a combat situation?"

Also Brawn is size Large, that will take 2 medium slots of teleport, and you currently only have 3 extra slots each. so Neshi could do Brawn and Elyngael. Owen would then have to do Atlas, Armand, and Vamir. Technically we could do it but we couldn't take Leif with us.

Neshi and Owen both feel they can pull off the teleportation, But Armand suggest keeping the powerful spell available for future use. He also suggest that the horses may come in handy and if they teleport, they won't be able to bring them along, and wonders if Brawn may cause a problem being a large creature.

Elyngael is tired of the discussion, so she and mounts Brawn and starts to head out, letting everyone know her choice,

Vamir asks if anyone could shrink Brawn to make teleportation easier, but says he'll go with the groups decision, he also suggests horses can conceivably be procured later if needed.

And just like that the Wardens are off.

Elyngael tries to explain to her fellow Wardens that she only took action because she felt it was her and Brawn's fault that the teleport plan was having troubles, and she didn't want her friends bickering about it, claiming she would catch up with them. Her fellow Wardens were having none of that splitting the party thing though, and instead mounted up and followed the Ranger and her Wolf. Though no one said it, it seems to go without saying, that the Wardens stick together no matter what, like a family of sorts.

About an hour into the trip the skies open up and it begins to rain, not a torrential down pour, but more of a soft, refreshing rain, the kind that brings life to the land and joy to heart of farmers. In spite of the fact that the rain isn't aggressive, it still doesn't take long for the Wardens to be soaked. Luckily the clouds finally break an hour or so before it is time to make camp for the night, and even though the Wardens are damp still, the ground that they will be sleeping on is dry, and due to the gentleness of the rain, the water didn't seem to get into anyone's packs, so only the clothes on their backs, as well as any none metallic armors, being worn, are wet.

With Owen, Vamir, and Armand all wearing rings of sustenance, the watches go pretty smoothly, and with the use of some good old fashion labor mixed with some simple magic the Wardens are able to get dried out quite well, and except for Brawn giving everyone a second shower, the wardens ran into no problems dealing with the rain. With camp set up, and a fire burning, thanks to Neshi's labors, the Wardens enjoy a pleasant night. The skies have completely cleared, and the stars have come out. A full moon is shining so bright, that one doesn't need a torch to see. All that plus a lovely campfire makes for a grand evening, and if it wasn't for the urgency of the trip, you would have sworn that this was one of the best camping trips ever, especially now that the rain is over. The night passes without incident, and morning dawns revealing the makings of a beautiful day. After a quick meal, the Wardens are saddled and on the road.

The Wardens approach Lief's village about a 1/2 hour before sundown. As you enter the town, you see signs of a once prosperous community that has fallen on hard times. There are many homes that are obviously vacant and run down to the point that many of the roofs are caving in. As you move further towards the city center, the homes take on a much more "lived in" appearance. Even though these homes are inhabited, they show all the signs of poverty. Everyone and everything you see looks very poor. The people look thin and worn down, As Lief had informed you before, the populace is mostly halfling, but like Lief, there are a handful of humans, and you even spy a young half-elf couple walking close together, even poverty can't stop love apparently. There is a worn down temple of Ffloy at the very center of the village, that appears to be used regularly, in spite of it worn down appearance. The one thing you don't see within this impoverished settlement, are beggars. Of course who is there to beg from? Everyone is poor. Lief takes you to the local tavern, and talks to whom appears to be the owner. The owner, a halfling male, quickly rushes off and reappears a few moment holding plates of food, being assisted by a halfling women that you surmise is the owners wife. They place the food in front of you and tell you that there will be no charge, and they insist that you spend the night, also with no charge, thanking you for coming and claiming it's the least that could do to help show the gratitude of the community. The food placed before you is simple fair. mainly potatoes, and some poor cuts of meat. one swig of the ale and reveals it to be slightly watered down. Everyone make a sense motive check. However, until we've actually done something worthy of a free meal and lodging, we must insist on paying. It wouldn't be right of us to accept your generous offer and then end up giving nothing in return." Atlas delivers this in his usually nonchalant tones, but he is sure to make it clear that he's grateful for their kindness and that he means no disrespect in the least bit. Then, to move the conversation along he asks who are the best people to speak with before they go looking in the mines. As they respond he counts out an appropriate amount of coin to cover their meal and lodging equal to that of an Inn in Plateau City. He tries to be discrete so the inn keeper doesn't realize that he put more in there than he should, putting silver on top to do the trick.

Mean while Fildor acknowledges Elyngael saying, "Come away from the door lass both you and your wolf friend are most welcome here". Fildor then addresses the rest of the Wardens, "Well as I'm sure my good man Lief here has shared already, this here was once a prosperous town due to the platinum mine, but when the mine stopped producing, well most folks packed up and moved on. The current populace are those who have chosen to stay, refusing to allow our town to go completely bust". He continues by saying, "The reason Lief went to fetch you was due to the disappearance of the child named Tristan Stonewood, and his would be rescuers. You see, there is a game that the kids play around here, a test of bravery if you will, where the kids take turns entering the old mine and going as deep as they dare before carving their name on the wooden supports, and returning. Kids have been playing this game for a while now, and no harm has befallen anyone, well until now anyways. If you care to learn more about the game on that fateful day you may want to speak with the kids Tristan was playing with that day, I'm sure Lief would be happy to make the introductions in the morning". At that Lief nods his head in acknowledgment, stands and says, "unless you have anymore questions for me, I'll be off, I'm sure the wife has heard of our arrival by now, and will be expecting me".

Neshi doesn't say much, he is deep in thought, until finally he asks himself and his friends, "Do you think it could be drow behind the disappearance?"

Armand tries to ascertain the mental and physical health of the ladies. Physically they appear healthy and whole, a little slender for a halfling, but poverty doesn't allow for second breakfasts and such. Suzanna's missing ear is completely healed and has the appearance of an old injury. Mentally they seem as well as can be expected under the current conditions, and in spit the grief the ladies are experiencing, they seem just fine. Armand also lets the ladies know that his friends would like to use magic to try to obtain the ware abouts of Tristan. and my need something from them.

Vamir informs the ladies what he need from them, and Suzanne gets up and heads to the boys room saying, "I'll be right back!" when she returns, she has a shirt that is in need of washing, and a few strands of hair she claims she found on his pillow.

Elyngael asks if Brawn can smell the shirt to help track the boy.

Owen is happy to let Vamir take point on the scrying, but more then willing to step in if needed.

With the hairs Vamir casts the spell, however even though he is certain that the spell worked, he is unable to get any information from it.

Suzanne tells Elyngael to take the shirt to use as needed.

Do our heroes have further questions for the ladies, more avenues they like to pursue, or would they prefer to head back to the inn for the night? The Wold awaits with baited breath.

Then Atheena adds, "It's kind of a sore spot for most of us here, being the mine is the reason our town is the way it is".

Armand wonders how far from the scab they may be, knowing that there are drow there. he then suggests heading to the inn for sleep and preparation of spells.

Owen also feels rest is in order.

Vamir apologies that his spell didn't reveal anything, but promises to do all that is within his power to bring the loved ones back. He then mentions to Atlas that he can make some potions of neutralize poison is needed.

Our intrepid heroes turn in for the night, and though the rooms, at the inn, are meticulously clean, the beds, like the food, aren't the lap of luxury. The beds are a little hard, but not to uncomfortable, and the blankets are inexpensive, and a little rough on the skin, being made of wool. Less then ideal, but a far cry better then sleeping on the ground, or in a dark and dreary mine. The Wardens sleep a fitful sleep, and awake refreshed. Those that need to prepare their spells, do so, and everyone goes down for breakfast, which consists of a simple porridge. It's hot and filling, and will stick to your ribs, but it lacks in the flavor department. It isn't bad, but with a little sugar or honey and some spices, such as cinnamon, it would be a real treat, but the Wardens are well aware of the financial position of the village, and niceties cost money. As the Wardens are finishing breakfast, Lief arrives with a handful of children. He asks the kids to sit down, and then informs the Wardens that these are the children that were playing with Tristan at the mine. The children seem to be mild mannered, and await to be spoken to before saying anything.

Atlas stays back keeping an eye on the kids, while sharpening his daggers. he can tell that the kids are more then a little intimidated by the fighter's actions.

Neshi doesn't want to scare the kids, so he stays back also.

Armand asks the kids a few questions, and tries to put them at ease in the process.

Vamir does his morning rituals then when the kids arrive he stays back as he's afraid his scar will scare the kids.

Elyngael tries to assist Armand at putting the kids at ease, and tries using a kid level question to bring them out of their shells.

Owen keeps an eye out for kids who may want to talk but are afraid too, planning to take them aside if he discovers any.

*************************************************************

Atlas can tell that at first the five kids are a little scared, what with him sharping his daggers, and Neshi's impressive visage, wouldn't cause such a reaction? However, he also notices that they also seem to be a little star struck by the presence of the Tree Wardens, who are rapidly gaining fame through out the Wold, due to their heroic exploits, but Armand and Elyngael are able to break them out of there shells. "Nah miss, we weren't playing hide and seek", one of the boys, a human named Edmund, says, "We were playing "Scaredy Cat". A halfling boy with curly red hair named Oliver adds, [b]"Scaredy Cat is where you go into the Mine as far as you dare, then scratch your name on the closest beam, and the one who goes the furthest isn't the Scaredy Cat". A human boy named Walter chimes in, "I made it to the third beam!", then a halfling girl named lily pipes up saying, "Nuh-uh, you only made it to the second, I made it to the fifth beam!. The fifth child a halfling named Diana, proclaims, "No one makes it to the fifth, your lying, you Scardey Cat!" This kind of bragging/bickering goes on for a wile until Armand asks why they play such a game, to which they answer in unison, "I don't know!". You are able to glean that at first, the kids thought Tristan was staying in on purpose so he could be the winner, it wasn't until an hour or so had passed, and the kids were getting bored, and Tristan wasn't answering their calls to come back out that they realized something was wrong, and ran to get help, The kids don't have a map, claiming that the mine goes in strait for a long time, and no one knows when or if it turns. Lief claims the last of the maps the village had was taken by the last of the five disappearing rescue teams.

Leif shakes his head sadly saying, "The only person alive today who worked the mines is Old Mad Jack, and he's as senile as they come. Stories say Old Mad Jack was mad as a hatter even when he was a young man, though he was and still is a stand up person, he just wasn't right in the head, mix that with his current mental state, and I fear he won't be much help to you"

Armand and Elyngael suggest that they just head to the mine, with Armand asking if Brawn could do some sniffing, and Elyngael reminding everyone that they have a job to do, and it seems it's time to do it.

Vamir struggles with his frustration, and turns to the plants for help. The plants don't seem to have to much information available, and the reason becomes clear when he communes with an ancient oak.The old tree says, "There used to be a great number of trees around the area that you are referring, some of them were friends of mine, but the people cut them down to make way for their digging equipment, and used the wood to hold up their mine, as a result, no word has traveled on the winds for a very, very long time. Atlas holds his ground, readying an attack if they come close. "Not sure what else to do, so let's see if they attack."

Owen takes a step up by Brawn and decides to wait and see what these things do before attacking. "It could be that we just disturbed them and they'll settle down."

Neshi fires off a cone of cold hitting all the swarms, 1, 4, and 6 save 2, 3, and 5 do not.

Elyngael draws her sword. Both Brawn and her prepare to attack.

Armand readies his hammer for an attack.

Vamir cast confusion affecting swarms 1 and 5. 1 fails, 5 saves.

Owen recognizes the bats as underworld bats, he also realizes that they look malnourished. as he fires off a fireball, hitting all 6 swarms. 1, 3, and 6 save, 2, 4, and 5 do not.

********************************************

All the swarms except 1 and 6 are completely obliterated by the fire and ice one-two punch. Even though they are greatly diminished, swarms 1 and 6 are still holding together. Swarm 6 advances forward, almost withing striking distance from Neshi, while swarm 1 stays put, making incoherent bat sounds, obviously under the affect of Vamir's confusion spell.

Armand looks at the devastation wrought by the ice and fire combo. He still has his hammer ready for when any bats close on him.

"Maybe the bats will take the hint and just move on?" He asks.

Elyngael, with her long sword readied, checks to ascertain that these bats are attacking humans defensively or aggressively as a natural food source (Knowledge Nature d20+12=31), since Owen stated they look malnourished.

Armand with hammer in hand comments that maybe the bats will get the idea after seeing the devastation of the previous round

Neshi casts fireball, completely obliterating swarm 6, then responds to Armand saying "Armand, When has anything that has attacked us taken any sort of hint and just moved on?"

Vamir draws his sickle as he appreciates his handy work with the confusion spell.

Owen informs everyone that these are underworld bats, and they look malnourished.

Elyngael and Brawn remain ready to attack if needed, as she remembers that underworld bat swarms would normally disperse after so much damage, unless they are starving, in which case they will fight to the death, blinded by hunger. She also remembers that underworld bats will eat almost anything with a pulse.

Atlas cracks a joke when Owen mentions the malnourished state of the bats.

*****************************

With swarm 6 gone, all that remains is swarm 1 which spends another round chattering oddly as a result of Vamir's confusion spell. What will our intrepid heroes do now? Tune in next time, same bat time, same bat channel.
