Oh Bother [DM Jerry]
Sunday August 23rd, 2015 9:47:35 AM

Mack fails utterly with his Disable Device check, but is very confident that the door and keyhole is not trapped. This does have an effect on the keys, however. In a high pitched voice, the keys begin in chorus to scream, "No my job. My door. Go away."

They run to towards the door and quickly push Mack's hands away and unlock the door.

Inside is a living chamber with bed, cooking pot, etc. all carved in intricate designs out of wood. Though the wooden pot is boiling, it is not burning, nor the wood being harmed.

Peevish rises and skips in as if this is a daily occurance and begins to use a ladle to dish out the stew in the pot. "Come eat! Will help give you strength for the ogres." He hands out a bowl to each of our heroes.

Then someone finally notices the painting on the wall. A circle of ancient trees in a forest, with one of those ancient trees walking away from the rest. The title on the picture is, "Deeproot's Departure." Peevish says, "Yes, that is for you as well. Take it home to Deeproot. It may stir him if you place it in the proper place. Now hurry along, the ogres are recovering! Eat! Take the painting! Run! No, finish the stew! There! Hurry now! Goodbye!"

The pocket realm fades in sunbeams and the smell of stew. The hulking figures of something ahead begins to reform. Ogres!

That will make the Heroes Feast 1d8+5, for minimum caster level to use.
I am headed to work soon. I will put in a Post tonight to reset the scene and hopefully tomorrow morning to get the week started. We are going to start off on an even footing with the Ogres. but the heroes feast will make up for it. You'll see, it'll be fine.

The mention of the picture make me want to examine it much more closly but the Ogres are first. I so hope we can save some of the Bears if not mother. With that if no one grabed the painting I do! ADM David Ogre fight round 1
Monday August 24th, 2015 10:47:22 AM

OOC
OK guys. I work mostly opening shift this week, so other than today and tomorrow you can expect posts either before I go in, around 4 am on average, or after I get home, after 4pm average.
Terrain- I have no map, so this will be done without one. The trees that were screening them have thinned out now that you are closer and the ogres have no cover.
The arrows that were fired in the surprise round all failed to hit their AC with the cover and range.
IC
Everyone that wants to gets to eat their fill of stew (remember to roll your 1d8+5 temporary hp). Peevish rolls the painting (frame and all!) up and hands it to Crosseye, since the Ranger had shown so much interest in it. He cautions Crosseye not to unroll it until they are home, because it will not roll back up for any of them. As each person exits the tree, they end up standing in a crowd 50 feet from the ogres. Up closer now they get a better look at the brutes and notice things that they hadn't seen before.
There are really THREE ogres. All of them wear chain shirts and are using heavy flails to beat up the bear. They also have large longbows and quivers of arrows on their backs. The third ogre, that you all missed seeing before, stands 70 feet away, holding the leashes of two large wolves.
Mamma bear, who was frozen just like the ogres were seems to be pretty beat up and deperately looking for a way out of her current situation.
Time unfreezes and the two ogres doing the beating turn and look at Cameron. They both scratch their heads and one speaks, maybe to Cameron, maybe to the other ogres, you can't be sure. In Giantish he says Highlight to display spoiler: {" The Lady o' pain? Who's he talkin' 'bout? Dis be our dinner! Wait, it has CUBS? Mmmmmm."}
In response, the third ogre, the one with the wolves shouts at the other two in Giantish. Highlight to display spoiler: {Forget the bear, get them! They has loots and will taste even better on the spit! And they will scream and beg while they roast. We can track the bear back to it's cubs later and get them for dessert!"}
The two ogres stop fighting the bear and turn towards the group and the third one lets go of the leashes holding the wolves and draws his bow. The wolves rush off to either side and disappear into the woods, attempting to get behind the group. You now face 2 ogre footmen at a distance of 20 feet from you and a bowman who is 70 feet from you. The footmen stand 5 feet apart (there is a 5 foot space between them). As stated, the wolves ran into the trees and were lost from sight (DC20 perception to see and target them if you want to shoot them this round) The ogres seem ready for your attack and waiting for you to make the next move.

ADM David Ogre fight round 1 bonus post

For it's part the bear looks puzzled. This quickly passes and it bolts off into the woods, probably to rejoin it's cubs.

Cameron listens to the ogres as they talk back and forth. His frown deepens. He translates enough for his friends to know what's going on.
" They think we would taste better than the bear. They plan to track her back to her cubs after they kill us and get the cubs for dessert. They have no idea how wrong they are."
Cameron tries to follow the path the wolves take but they are too fast for him. He turns to the Ogres and smiles. It is not a nice smile, in fact, it chills you all to the bone.
" Grouping up eh? Bad idea." With a simple gesture and a touch of his holy symbol, Cameron calls down the wrath of Jancassis on the two ogre footmen. Suddenly the air around them rings with a deafening crash and the ogres ears start to bleed. Cast sound burst for 4 damage to the ogres, DC 15 Fort save or they are stunned.

Carver lowers his lance, chooses an angle to charge one of the footmen ogres. he'll chose the one on the left. That way once he strikes at the ogre he can ride past it, leaving him out of melee range, as long as someone engages him, to keep his attention. He wants to end up about 30 feet and to the side of the archer bowman, with his angle......
"Someone keep him from chasing after me, or I'll not be able to keep this up." Carver says just as he's launching his attack. (Centaur Charge to line up angle, Ride by Attack to avoid the AoO)

Hearing Carver call for help and plan, I follow him with "Little Mack" ready. I stop at the left ogre to engage him and stop him from chasing Carver. At that point I swing with the Great Axe at the Ogre. (Attack roll 10 I guess a miss). My swing is wild and misses badly but at least Carver is safe for another charge! Cameron's spell has more success than he would have thought against such tough opponents. The right hand ogre's eyes roll back as the burst of sound stuns him. Atlas is able to run in while this happens and deliver his attack, which slashes the ogre across the thigh and draws blood.(this is Ogre 2). Osul's aim is off and misses the ogre he aims his storm burst at (but not by much). Carvers charge should be free of problems, but the ogres were ready for something like this. Atlas got lucky that his ogre was stunned, Carver not so much. As the Centaur closes the Ogre takes the swing he had been reserving for a charger, lucky for Carver it misses, the two handed flail crashing into the turf at the Centaur's feet. As the ogre swings Carvers lance bites deep into it's side and then back out again as the centaur completes his charge. Crosseye comes running up behind Carver and as he does, the ogre recovers and attacks with an attack of opportunity as the ranger closes the gap Crosseye is not so lucky as the heavy flail smashes into his chest, slamming the wind out of him for 12 damage. Mack follows Crosseye into the fray and launches a series of blows at the kneecaps of the ogre. One of them does seem to hurt the brute, causing enough damage that the brute drops to the ground, dead.
The Ogre in the back with the longbow takes aim at Carver and unleashes an arrow the size of a fletched spear. Because Carver is slightly off balance from charging he does not get his shield up in time and the arrow hits him, causing 7 damage.
Then the wolves reappear. Cameron and 'Osul are the only ones that did not advance to fight the ogres, leaving them vulnerable. the wolves charge in from either side and ravage the two healers. Cameron sidesteps the wolf's attack, but 'Osul is not so lucky. The wolf bites him for 8 damage and attempts to drag the druid to the ground. Solid as a tree, 'Osul fights off the trip attempt and remains standing.

Cameron takes a 5' step away from the wolf that attacked him and as he does the whip on his belt seems to just appear in his hands as if called there by his will. With a hiss he turns and snaps the whip at the wolf savaging 'Osul. It snaps across the wolf's face and leaves a small trail of blood as the head becomes an actual snakes head and bites the wolf in the snout. ( 2 nonlethal damage and 3 lethal damage). The halfling then plants his feet and stands his ground preparing to fight off the wolves. Other than the hiss he remains silent.

Cameron rounds on the Wolf attacking 'Osul and snaps his whip across it's snout, drawing blood.
Crosseye charges at the Wolf on 'Osul and slams his axe into it.
'Osul, not to be outdone, spends an entire round summoning a large ant behind the Wolf on Cameron. t the very end of the round it appears and bites and grapples the wolf, but fails to sting it. ( Sting after grapple makes sense. The ant surely did grapple it, but I rolled and missed with the stinger.)
Carver charges the ogre archer, dipping in with his lance as he passes. He hits but fails to kill the archer.
Atlas swings hard and cuts into the ogre in front of him, waking it up from la-la land.
Mack nimbly dashes over to this ogre and attacks it with a single punch( too far of a move to flurry) connecting solidly.

The ogre footman takes a swipe at Atlas with his heavy Flail and misses.
The archer follows Carvers charge around and looses another arrow, striking the centaur in the back as he passes for 6 damage.
The Wolf on Cameron becomes frantic as it is grappled by the giant ant and tries to escape. It leaves some fur behind, but manages to get away from the ant.
The Wolf facing 'Osul finds itself greatly outnumbered, but fights on anyway, sure that if it tries to run it will be cut down. It chomps dwn on 'Osul again for 5 damage, and again tries to trip him, and again it fails.

'Osul heals Mack for 9 damage.

The remaining Ogre stops laughing and looks around. Te knowledge that it is alone crosses it's face and for a moment you see what could only be fear in it's eyes. In giantish it says, Highlight to display spoiler: {" They will blame this on me if I go back, but they might lets me live."}

" It sounds like he will be paying his penance once he reaches his masters, whomever they are. Jancassis will see to it I am sure. Come over here and let me heal you all."

Mack stands back up after the terrible assault from the ogre. He dusts himself off and looks back at Atlas with a frown. "I thought you killed that thing. I mean, it was a really well placed strike and the amount of blood was more than I have in all my body. Hmm, next time would you mind killing it so that I don't die? I mean, dying could be fun, there's the Realms of Shadow, the Lands of Rest, etc. Maybe I would meet a god."

After Mack feels Cameron's healing flow through him he shivers, "Thanks Cameron, but goodness, could we find a way to make that feel less weird? You might think that I like weird, but really I only like weird sometimes, and that sometimes can change depending on how well I'm playing my banjo that day."

Mack takes a moment to look himself over, "Sorry Cameron, I do really appreciate that you're trying to heal me and all, but do you see this scratch on my arm? And this bruise on my shoulder? I'm still not feeling 100%. Maybe 'Osul can help finish the job? You did a good job though, I really thought I was going to die there."

Mack goes to ask 'Osul for help healing his remaining wounds.

The group takes about an hour to strip the large and heavy ogres of their gear and bundle it up for transport. Once they are done, both the ogre and mama bear are well on their way. Thus they head out for the Tree. They are in high spirits as they set camp for the night. Between Carver's tent and the goblin tent they have more than enough shelter for all. It rains briefly, but then the clouds part for a star filled night with a full moon.

Atlas looks around at the group. It's not the same as they started and he spends a minute contemplating how he feels about the departure of Zee and Walter. He's still a bit confused by how it all went down, but so be it. Anyway, "Alright, we've lost some of our group, so we'll need to adjust the watch. 'Osul, you're with me on first watch. Cameron, Carver, you're second watch so you can have your prayer time Cameron. Mack, Crosseye, that puts you on last watch. Anyone have any issues with this setup?"

Atlas takes his watch with 'Osul and the two get to know each other better, talking about their past and their experiences together thus far. Atlas is still focused on finding ways to get this group to come together and he talks over various ideas with 'Osul.

At the end of their watch he wakes up Cameron and Carver, and quickly falls asleep dreaming about his new sword and the potential of learning how to use one of those longbows that they found. He was never very fond of his shortbow.

The next morning he wakes up and gets back to his routine of going through his morning forms/exercise. After a quick bite to eat he's ready to return to the Tree. On the march he thanks Cameron for helping heal Mack and opens discussions with him on how the group can better work together moving forward. Every chance he gets he's talking about it, and he's leaning on the Ogre fight as an example of how good they can be together.

Cameron (David F) AC 20 (T 14, FF 17) CMD 16 HP 27 /27 Character Sheet
Monday August 31st, 2015 11:49:58 PM

Cameron finds a spider as he makes camp and saves it for his prayers.
When he prays he consumes the spider and feels the poison in it spread through his body, slowing his thoughts and bringing him clarity. He sees the "church" of Jancassis, and realizes that it is a shadow religion. Those that ask for her aid do so in secret, praying to her in whispers and meeting her agents, clerics and Avengers, in secret or out of the way places.
This is not his vision of her church and his mind fights the image that she must be considered evil. All others see is her granting of revenge and use of poison. Where is her chamioning the cause of the weak and the downtrodden? Are they not the one most in need of her aid because they can not afford to see justice done through the law? Cameron thinks that they ARE the ones that the religion should focus on, not the shifty Drow in their Underdark homes, not the wealthy that use her name to hire assassins to take revenge where they have no claim.
A shudder runs through him. It s not fear, surely not. She has chosen him and she has seen to it that fear, hate, love and torment are not the factors that motivate him. What is it then? He thinks he knows. He thinks it is the anticipation that he can become the spokesman of her TRUE church. When he returns to the Tree they will already be there, waiting for him because he has told her he is ready. He will prepare for the ritual and they will take him and perform the tests. If he is worthy, he will emerge from them beaten, but able to hold his head high. If he is unworthy, he will be lucky to live through the tests. Nothing is free, and Cameron is willing to pay in his own blood for the vision of her church that he knows he can make happen.
He finishes his prayers and joins Carver on watch. In the morning, while they all discuss how to work effectively together he shares his dream of a church where Jancassis true calling can be known to the wold. He explains that he is no front line combatant, but neither will he shy away from a fight. If the foe is small enough or light enough they can count on him to keep the foe off balance. Tripped, disarmed and if unarmored he can even damage them with his whip. He pats the whip as he speaks, and the head at the tip of the whip tests the air with it's tongue.

The night passes without any attacks. In the morning the teams teamwork is discussed as the group heads back to the Tree.
In late afternoon the Tree can be seen clearly and just before dark, they arrive home. Most, if not all of the shops have closed for the evening. Both Miles Raynor and Ciyradyl approach the group to inquire what the Lights were and to find out if steps need to be taken to fortify the Tree more than normal. They can see that the group is both tired and missing one of their number (remember, they never met Walter). Unless they are told that an attack is soon to come they retreat and let the group rest and get cleaned up from their travels.
The group's apartment is cool and welcoming. Cameron finds his pets hungry, but otherwise unharmed. Everything remains as the group left it a couple of weeks ago.

Cameron is happy to see the Tree. He listens as Atlas tells the authorities that there is no pressing problems for the Tree. He is sure it is true, but wonders for how long. He wastes no time pondering further though, he has things to prepare for. He drops off his gear in the apartment, and takes his towel, robe, grooming kit and his ever present whip with him to the bath house.
He has studied up on what the ritual test will involve, and has come to a few conclusions. In preparation he takes a long, very hot bath to remove the dirt of the road from himself. He knows that he will quite literally be covered in spiders, scorpions and snakes, so he makes their access to his flesh easier by shaving. He removes all of his hair, save for the chin whiskers that no dwarf would ever allow to be shaved. It has been quite awhile since he has shaved. Until now he thought that the extra beard would have to be shaved to return him to the short goatee he had originally kept. But his recent musings on respectability and appearance to form a new sect of his church have changed his mindset. In the morning he will acquire the other things he needs, but for now he settles for cleaning and trimming his beard, but leaves it long.
Once he has had a good long bath he returns to the apartment and dresses simply. When he leaves to head to the tavern he carries only his whip, his holy symbol, and enough coin for a few drinks.

Carver, watching Cameron, just shakes his head. Not in disgust as most would, but in dismay. Most would denounce the fact Cameron worships his lady, but his memory brings up the history of his own god....
At one time Gargul himself was considered evil, it took a lot of effort for that to be overcome and here was his little friend, about to set off on his crusade, most likely all alone. He would help when he could, unless Gargul himself told him not to, but he'd keep his help low key as well, it would mean more to Cameron if he did it himself.
Carver deposits his armor on his rack, takes a few minutes cleaning it with prestidigitation, along with his weapons. He then heads off to the baths, at the base of the tree for those larger people. He wears basic clothes and his sword and dagger. Washing up, he looks to see if he has any facial hair and has yet to see any, he really wants a mustache that he can twirl into a handlebar.
He heads to the tavern after washing up, and has a few drinks with his friends....

For now they will need to dry enough whilst he re-braids his hair. Fortunately, his pant cuffs are not picking up the debris like they did on his way to the Tree initially, and they scrub up nicely.
He is still happy within himself, but he understands that there is more to being a druid than he has learned in the Wood (like wands!), and so this will bear further investigation - again, in the morning. He vaguely recalls there being mentioned that at least one of the inhabitants is a druid, and this will be brought up in conversation when he catches up with his friends.
He arrives, eventually, at the tavern, and takes a seat before joining the conversation.

ADM David Home Sweet Home

As the group all head to the tavern from different directions, they all end up there at the same time. The tavern is quiet since there are no major caravans at the Tree tonight. One table is filled with three people, all well dressed, but still armored and armed. On their clothing or around their necks hangs the badge of office of a WLA officer. They sit companionably around the table and chat in quiet tones among themselves. One is a dwarf, armored in full plate with a great axe propped against the table at his elbow. Another is a femalw elf, dressed in light mail with flowers worked through the armor. She is astoundingly bueatiful, so much so that at first glance she does not even appear to be armed. On second glance though, a star knife adorns her belt. The third is a human male, dressed in robes. A staff rests against the table ate his elbow and a longsword adorns his left hip.
As the group meets up to enter the tavern the dwarf sitting facing the door looks up and nudges the elbows of his companions. This causes the other two to turn and regard you all standing in the doorway. As one they rise from thier table and motion that you should come and join them at a larger table, already set, off to the side.
It seems that you will not see your bunks as early as you had hoped tonight.

OOC
For ease of play I will assume Atlas stops by to get a bite and a drink before retiring for the night, and that Mack's search for Bonivus takes him to the tavern as well.

Cameron is a bit surprised to NOT see a particular dwarf stting in the tavern awaiting his arrival. Maybe he had been wrong about Targath's connection and ability to always be there to whisper Jancassis 's message to her followers. He continues into the tavern as if nothing were wrong and walks up to the Trio to greet them. He recognizes the WLA badge that they wear and knows it is not just a low level badge. These travelers are somewhat important in the organization, how important and why they want to talk to the group remains to be seen.
" Good evening. Have you all waited up to speak to us? My name is Cameron of Jancassis. I am one of the healers that looks out for the well being of this small group of adventurers. I recognize your badges, though I cannot tell their rank. They are clearly not the badges, nor do you have the bearing on initiates. Please have a seat and tell us why you have come to the Tree."

Atlas grumbles to himself as gets sucked into the subtleties of the social game. He just wanted to lay down in his bed for the night, get a bath in the morning and then deal with the rest of the world again. Oh well, he puts on his most charming smile and steps forward...

"Good evening folks. I agree, it appears that you are here waiting on us. We're weary from our travels and I still haven't had my bath, so I apologize if we're not showing as expected. Let's sit and you can tell us how you know about us and why you're waiting on us. Unlike Cameron, I'm not overly familiar with the badge you wear. I would love to be educated."

Atlas calls to the waitress (what's her name? we should know that by now I'm guessing) and asks for drinks and dinner for all.

"Thanks Atlas!" I sure hope they bring out some chicken. I have a craving. And some cole slaw.

Carver nods a greeting to the WLA members.
"What can we do you for, as it seems that you are waiting for either all or some of us?"
Carver orders a refill of his wine and a large meal, it'd been a few days of trail food and it was time time for real food.

"Good evening, I am Crosseye and as Atlas, I too am not familiar with your badge either? But it look like you been waiting for us how can we help? We just got back and all are hungry and tired . We have been gone for a bit." Like Mack I take my usual spot at the back, partly in hiding and let the others (Atlas and Cameron) do all the taking for us.

"I am familiar only by their reputation. The Fist was not one of their many fans because the WLA did things for folk without charge, an idea the Mailed Fist found sacrilegious. Now that I am retired from the Fist, I am able to see their worth for what it is. They provide help to those who need it and promote good, for goodness sake. I think if one of you were to tell them about our most recent trip, they would be most interested in Asads and the place he was guarding. They seem more robust than us and have access to more information. They could probably figure out more than we were able to."

Cameron seems more on guard that he was a moment ago. His comments seem more apt to lead the trio to ask questions and show their hand more than they seem meant to give out information.
Cameron also seems acutely aware that neither he, nor almost anyone else in the group is armored, and most of them only carry a fraction of their arsenal. You have never seen Cameron fidget, but he certainly looks like he wants to. If he still had hackles, they would be at least up to half mast by now.

'Osul (Graham) AC:11 (T:11, FF:10), CMD:2, HP:19/19, Speed: 30'
Wednesday September 2nd, 2015 8:31:59 PM

'Osul feels considerably different to the youth whose last-first arrival at the Tree was only a week or so ago. He has found good friends, and in any perceived shortfall on good - and who would he be to point fingers - then made up for in being interesting friends. He considers this as he tidies up his gear, and also has a wash. The one set of traveler's garb is not sufficient here, but that will need to wait until morning. For now they will need to dry enough whilst he re-braids his hair. Fortunately, his pant cuffs are not picking up the debris like they did on his way to the Tree initially, and they scrub up nicely.

He vaguely recalls there being mentioned that at least one of the inhabitants is a druid, and this will be brought up in conversation when he catches up with his friends.
He arrives, eventually, at the tavern, and takes a seat before subtly joining the conversation, and introduces himself to the three who have joined them: "Well met, I am called 'Osul."

ADM David An Unexpected Visit
Thursday September 3rd, 2015 6:36:55 AM

The robed man replies to their greetings. It would seem he is the speaker for the group.
" Well met I am sure. My name is Ferdinand, my companions are Heather Leafwhisper and Oslo Stoneshaver. As you have correctly surmised from our badges we are officers in the Woldian Adventurers League. We have been sent ut to some of the more remote areas where no League outpost resides to see if we can find adventurers who wish to join the WLA. When we inquired here at the Tree of Parting we were surprised by the tales we heard and thought it might be prudent to await your return so that we might talk. Is this all of you? We had heard there was another, a young lady with a flair for arcane magic. No? Well ten let us get on with this interview. Heather if you would take care of the formalities please."
He indicates the elven woman who stands and faces the table. She grips her holy symbol and casts a simple spell, then a more complicated one (Spellcraft DC 15 and DC 16 respectively to identify them as they are cast) WHn she is done she quietly says, " My apologies for casting spells on you without notice. They are to determine if you are really the sort of people that the tales we have heard make you out to be. Some of your appearances and allegiances bring that into question." She looks pointedly at Cameron as she says this. Turning to Ferdinand she says simply, " They are as we were told, good of heart. Even the worshiper of Venom oddly enough."
At this point the dwarf speaks up. In a gruff no nonsense voice he comments on something Cameron had said earlier, to Atlas. " Darn shame about the Mailed Fist. Do ye have any friends still in their order? Judging by yer look ye don't know. The Mailed Fist has gone and laid siege to someplace up in Alsidur. Seems that the town reneged on paying the Fist for their services and General Neutronious went and invaded them. Word has it his Field Marshal Palance declared against him, saying he was mad with power and the Fist was neutral in these kind o' things. Now the two factions are at war and soon the whole Wold may be because of it. Thought you should know."
Ferdinand cuts in at this point and says " Well yes that is not our present concern Oslo. Well, now that we have had a chance to gather information about you, what questions do you have for us?"
He leaves the question dangling, waiting for the group to ask questions.

'Osul observes Heather's spell casting. It isn't something he has spend much time doing, but he sees these! {Spellcraft Checks: 15 (just) and 24 respectively} Unfortunately, the only spells he knows are the spells he knows - Orizons, 1st and 2nd level Druid spells.
Even more unfortunately, he has no frame of reference for the WLA. Maybe if they cropped up in a story his parents once told, but that would be all. His questions would be many and competing, so he keeps his tongue for the moment, and lets others speak first - and rightly so as these people would have heard no stories of him.
He watches, and listens, and takes the occasional mouthful, and smiles when it is not.

"Oh, heck no this isn't all of us! Unfortunately, the rest of the gang has not returned yet. They have gone in every direction, on scouting missions, it seems. In fact, I was looking for one of them when I came in here.... a minotaur, named Boni."

"I'm definitely very interested in hearing more about the WLA, though. What do you do, exactly? And how would it benefit the League by having us join?" My interest is definitely peaked, although I dislike too much formality and structure. I don't want it to impede my ability to aid those truly in need.

Atlas Sunowl (Trey) AC: 21 (T 13 FF 18), CMD: 18; HP 33/33 Character Sheet
Thursday September 3rd, 2015 2:55:30 PM

Atlas sighs, "You don't just go casting spells on people that you are trying to get to know. Sure, it is quick, but it really doesn't leave us with a warm fuzzy feeling about wanting to entertain what ever it is that you are here for. And how do I know that you did what you said? You could have cast any spell on me that you wanted. Next time at least have the decency to either hide it or to ask first."

Atlas is clearly frustrated by the bravado and disrespect that this group has shown them. Everyone knows that you don't opening cast spells on people without asking them unless you're in battle. Gah! He just wanted to lay down and get some rest, now he's bantering with folks he has no interest in while they cast spells on him. Sure, normally he would go along with it, he's a fairly easy going individual, but he's tired and cranky.

"Now, like 'Osul, I could spend the next week asking you questions and trying to figure out exactly who and what you are. I would then probably spend a month asking around to understand if you and your group are what you say you are. However, I really just want to go to bed right now. We've lost members of our group, we've fought a variety of monsters, a few of us have been knocking at death's door, and we have walked a really long way the past few weeks. So, let's cut to the chase. You came here seeking to speak with us, not the other way around, so what is your proposal?"

Cameron can't tell what spells they cast, but from her reaction he has a pretty good idea it was to check and see if they were evil. Atlas is dead on saying that things like that are not done in polite society. Cameron has a few other insights after having watched these League members operate. He voices them out loud.
" You guys haven't done this before have you, recruiting I mean? Atlas is very right that you don't do that to people in a polite negotiation. However, I have long admired the WLA and thought that they could do alot of good, that I could do alot of good with their help. Let me explain how we can fix this. You all did alot of research asking around about us. Oslo is the most genuine person I have spoken to among you. He seems genuinely to care that I or Carver might be upset hearing about what is happening to the Mailed Fist, and he is right, at least for me.I know how....trusting my fistmates were, how sure that their commanders had their best interests in mind, and they will find a way to solve this, hopefully a way that they can survive through."
"I think you should all go back to your rooms tonight, and we will go get some much needed rest. Tomorrow, say about three bells in the afternoon, we can meet again and you guys can start by explaining all the god that the WLA does and how we can fit into that, Then we can ask you questions and maybe vet some of the stories you have heard about us. As Atlas said we have had a trying week and a half or so and really need some sleep to be on top of our game. You need to think what you would do if presented with the same shenanigans you just did to us and rethink your approach. We ARE good people. These fellows are some of the best I have ever known. We have eachother's backs and want to continue to do good in this part of the Wold, and could use some help, maybe from the WLA. Tonight has been a false start and I think neither of us did very well on this first encounter. Tomorrow will be a new start, one where we can all do better."

Carver watches as the spells are cast, smiles as he realizes he recognizes them both. He lets the others speak their piece and then speaks up.
"I'm not worried about our friends in The Fist, they'll find their way. When we were in The Fist, we were taught to rely only on The Fist. Now that I'm no long a member of The Mailed Fist, I had planned on seeing about joining the Woldian League of Adventurers. My Aunt had mentioned it could be a warehouse of usefulness, for those willing to be useful in return themselves. But I do have to agree with my friend Cameron here, finishing this discussion after we are rested enough to see straight would be the best for all of us.
Oh, Cameron, the spells she cast, they were ****** and *******. I considered being rude myself, but if I did I'm sure I'd be visited this evening and Aunt Matilda would give me a very stern talking to."

Carver orders up another large stein of drink and promises to bring it back tomorrow once it's empty. It's obvious he's ready to head back to their rooms....

ADM David An Unexpected Visit

Those who managed to make their rolls know that the spells cast were Detect Magic and Detect Good.

The officers of the WLA look stunned by both Atlas's and Cameron's words. Clearly they ARE new to this whole recruiting thing and clearly they seem to have overstepped their bounds. Then, the other shoe drops...
The door to the tavern swings open fast and slams into the wall. Through it steps a gnomish woman, three and a half feet tall. She wears leather armor and is reading a couple of file folders full of paper. She starts talking out loud before she even bothers to look up at the people she is talking too.
"My goodness that was an adventure. The Citadel is locked up tighter than a drum. If it weren't for the unrest in the area I never would have been able to get in there. I found the files on two of the guys we wanted to look into before asking them to join the WLA, and boy, most of the stuff the people here have said is true. Those two did serve in the Mailed Fist and left under....."
"OHMYGOSH, when did THEY get here? Was I just talking out loud? Sometimes I can't tell."

The gnome stands halfway to the table with the files in her hands and a look of the cat that ate the canary on her face. Oslo drops his face into his hands on the table and mutters, "I told you this was a bad idea, you can't treat people we want as fellow adventurers like they are criminals." Both Heather and Ferdinand have turned a bright shade of red, Ferdinand in apparent embarrassment and Heather in anger at the gnome. The room goes quiet for an awkward amount of time until Ferdinand recovers his composure and says," So we should table this until three bells tomorrow afternoon, where should we meet?"
