OOC: Does anyone NOT want to contribute to a Wand Of Healing for the party? If everyone is interested, we could just pay for it when we sell our stuff, before splitting up the remainder.

Tree Tops Inn - Co DM Dan K
Saturday September 27th, 2014 11:08:03 AM

The group exits the suite and heads back to the Common room of Tree Tops. Another table now has guests at it, dressed in fine silks from the blue and silver color palette, they quietly are speaking among themselves. They all turn to look at you as you enter, but quickly return to their private conversation as you must not be the party on whom they are waiting.

The Party returns to the table and everyone is still there. Upon hearing of your acceptance, a wine is poured and glasses are raised. Folbre speaks, "To our new beginnings, friendship and honor in all we set out to do" More small talk is engaged about the table and you learn some about those that live here already
Tree_of_Parting NPCs

There are several others in the tree as part time residents, men and women from around the Wold who come he to study, research or simply get away. At any given time 4-7 such people are here. They are given as much privacy as they desire. When the topic shifts to opportunities closer to the Tree, Garret excuses himself, "I have matters that require my attention, If you would excuse me."

After Garret leaves, conversation resumes and the party is directed towards the 4 men in fine silk clothes who have just been joined by a 5th, far less impressively dressed, yet still quite nice. What stands out most is that the color scheme of the last man is in bright reds and yellows. Expensive to be sure, but almost painful to look it.

Ciyradyl speaks softly "Those men, are members of the Chancers Club and where they gather adventure is not far behind. They sponsored and paid for the the Ball last night, which was the last of the 3 nights. The games, the food, the staff and drink were all provided by those 4 men. On this day, that is where adventure lies my friends."

OoC I will help out with a wand what ever is needed plus as to the treasure stuff I have already add my part of the gold from the goblin encounter to my list as with everything else I need no interest and say we should sell it off for the funds. Also as before is there a banking system of storing way gold safely. As I want to save up or store some gold away. I don't really want to carry tons of gold around all the time.

Co DM Dan K there is no bank or other such thing. you can carry every posesion with you all the time, or leave things in your shiny new residence. It can be as simple on your PC sheet as 'stored gold' If you wish to secure it beyond being in a chest, you will need to purchase the amazing lock, enhanced with whatever, trap making skills and or anything else you can think of and track the expenditures to further solidify the safety of the storage and or residence as time goes by

The group finishes pleasantries and breakfast. Udhomer asks about a healer and is provided directions to The Leafy Chapel and Liliput Muffinbubble, the current caretaker. She has been here for about 2 years and they expect her to remain for another 3 or so and likely she will move on. The post here at the Tree is quite prestigious, and the order of Alemi spreads the responsibility around of being caretaker. Ciyradyl suspects it is to make sure no priest becomes to comfortable in the position and tries to abuse the power that comes with it. Folbre excuses himself first.

Ciyrandyl answers "The Chancers Club is an exclusive adventurers' club and widely known throughout the Plateaus as being an elitist members-only club made up of active and retired thrill-seekers. Daredevil young nobles challenge one another to duels and brag of their feats of bravado. Some say the Chancers are blessed with more money than sense, but the organization has flourished for almost 40 years, and its place in high society suggests that members gain access to some of the most powerful people in the Wold. One could make worse friends. As to their role here at the Tree, they have none. The Tree was a destination for the ball held over the last few days nothing more. I am not sure of the significance of their dress either. Likely to do with their respective positions" She shrugs, "A bit overboard for my taste, but you humans are a diverse and rather eccentric breed really."

Eventually breakfast comes to an end, other patrons arrive and your table splits up. As a group, you make your way to the table pointed out to you. The man in the bright red and yellows stands as you approach and directs you to sit. "Good morning good sirs, If I may." he sits back down, "You are the adventurers who not only saw the wagon in, but also killed the ankhegs that attacked last night are you not."

The other gentlemen lift their glasses to offer a small toast, but it is obvious that they intend to let the man in the red and yellow silks do the talking. he continues, "My name is Gaston Laroutte, a pleasure to make your aquaintence. These gentlemen are with the Chancers Club, an organization that I am petitioning."

With their introduction the men stand and that is when you recognize one of them. One of the men in Blue and silver, perhaps the most imposing and dashing of them all, is the image of the magical floating bust that greeted you last night and welcomed you to the Chancers Ball. They men nod in your direction, then to Gaston and then depart.

"They know i am going to ask you to accompany me on my final phase and rules keep them from prying into the details of such things. " Gaston says. "I would like to hire you fine men to account and speak to my bravery and deeds over the next 5 or so days as I lead you into the Eastern Wood." He flags down a servant and instructs the man to bring a glass of fine port for each of you and himself. He then smiles at you expectantly

Through the past few moments you can tell that Atlas is not very pleased with this Chancers Club. His look of disapproval, untimely grunts that seem to be dissatisfaction, and lack of his trademark smile make it clear. Just in case there is any doubt, he decides to speak up, "Greetings Gaston. As you can clearly tell, I'm not a bard, nor are any in this group of ours. Granted, the halfling has been known to try and cheer our spirits with some music, but you can trust me when I say he's no bard. Also, just to be clear, the outfits you are all wearing are quite over the top. Had I been wearing that last night I would have tripped and fallen into the Ankheg's mouth. Why do you do it?"

Atlas takes another look over Gaston, decides he doesn't really want to know, and pushes on with the conversation.

"Now, I cannot speak for everyone, but I find myself in quite the dilemma. You see, I have no desire to account and speak to your bravery and deeds. However, I do want to see what the Eastern Wood has to offer us, and then there's the coin as well. So, I'm tempted by your offer just as much as I am offended.

"Before we answer, tell me this. If we accompany you and you find yourself in trouble, are we to help or let you die and take the news back of your bravery even in death? If we do help, are we to bring back the truth, or are you paying us to say what you want?"

Atlas continues to look at Gaston with a look of disdain on his face as he waits for an answer or the others to speak up.

Tree Tops Inn - Co DM Dan K
Tuesday September 30th, 2014 11:41:00 PM

Gaston's expression shifts from an expectant smile to one of mild amusement and puzzlement. Atlas is sure the man is not insulted or mad, but precisely what he is now thinking, Atlas is unsure. Mack's quick and jaunty song returns the smile to his face and Gaston falls into the rhythm and taps with his hand in time. "Well played good sir, well played indeed."

Gaston then turns back to Atlas, "I suppose those are right and good questions and concerns. Though you should be careful about insulting anyone based upon their manner of dress. Those men that just left are part of the Questors Board of Inquiry and Selection and one of them was the Silver Bishop himself. A man of great influence, even out here. I am still an initiate and thus dress as you see me. But make no mistake, I am no man of small means myself. The Chancers Club does not consider just anyone. They are an elite group and can afford to be so."

Gaston drains his drink and orders another. "To the heart of your concerns, I am not looking for some bard and truth be told, I was not actually looking for you, but you have caught their attention and so you now make the perfect companions. You are capable of defending yourselves and seemingly forthright. So I am looking for to hire you to accompany me into the Eastern Woods. Should trouble arise i would think you will act accordingly. I do not know what lies in the Wood, a target and task assigned by the Silver Bishop to me. It is my last right of passage, so to speak, before being inducted. Their rules require a witness. Whom better than yourselves and as you have mentioned several times, there will be coin in it as well as the personal connection to an up and coming member to one of the Wolds most elite and influential organizations that deals directly with heroism and adventure."

"Surely I would think worth your time. What say you?"

Atlas Sunowl (Trey) AC: 21 (T 13 FF 18), CMD: 19; HP 13/13 Character Sheet

Atlas nods a thanks to Gaston for his forthright answer, then turns to the group, "Well, it was clear from our last conversation that one of the main reasons we are here is for adventure. Gaston seems straight enough, so I'm inclined to say that we should take him up on this offer. It would not do us good to offend such an influential group, even if I think their formalities and elitism is a bit absurd. Besides, I bet he cleans up nice after a few days in his armor and lacking a shave."

Atlas laughs at his own joke, turns to Gaston and says, "I am sorry if I came across a bit rough, but I'm not much for doing things that are not practical just for the sake of fitting into a group that at first glance seems to focus more on how great they are than how much good they are doing. However, your words seem true and your intent good, so maybe you can show us that we should not judge a book by its cover."

Atlas looks back to the group to see what the general consensus is. His attitude has changed and he seems to be excited about the potential adventure that awaits them.

OOC:

Just doing some math here... please, anyone jump in with you disagree with this plan, or (DM) if I have some of the understandings wrong.

I believe some people wanted to keep the vials? If that is the case, selling the rest gives us 891 GP. It costs 750 GP to get a Cure Light Wounds Wand with 50 charges. That leaves us 17 GP each, with 5 left on Party Treasure. Does that all sound correct, and OK with everyone, including to the DM the question of: "is that correct, and available"?

What would be the cost of the same Wand with only 25 charges? The reason I ask is because that might be better to have 2 people being able to use it simultaneously, plus spreading out the risk of it being destroyed some how.

After looking around for awhile I find what I am looking for healing kits. After taking it over with the merchant and settling on a price I perchase 1 with 10 uses (50gp). I also add a empty chest to that also. (2gp). Thinking I am all set now and ready to go I head backpack to our quarters with my stuff. I place the chest in the room empty (left there for future use). The group splits up from Gaston, some head below to haggle with some of the merchants and others look for where they can sleep. You all quickly learn that for the short term, the suite in the west wing where you were escorted to earlier, would serve as your residence. When you return from the eastern woods, a more permanent situation could be worked out. Speaking with Ciryndl, you learn of a couple possible places that might be handed into your possession. "Again though, we can speak about that upon your return. For now, enjoy the suite."

While purchasing some supplies, a few chuckles and rumors reach your ears. No one wishes to speak ill of anyone, but you are cautioned by more than one merchant about Gaston. The prevailing thought is his reputation is more purchased than earned. The other main thought is the expression of surprise that he is being considered for the Chancers Club. The collective thought of the merchants and even a few of the mailed fist is that the Chancers club values deed over coin, though they all admit to a great of coin is involved when it comes to the Chancers. None think you are in any particular danger and wish you well for the caravan will be gone by the time you return.

The night passes peacefully and the well earned rest is certainly appreciated by each body in a comfortable bed. The wind through the leaves and the sound of some nearby water feature add immeasurably to the peace of your sleep and dreams.

Few bookkeeping items. For non magical items, a simple posting such as Crosseye did is perfect. I go do x, y and z buying this and that. Write the items on your sheet, subtract the gold and call it a day

ALL MAGIC MUST BE PURCHASED THROUGH THE CATACOMBS. It is a different board entirely with othe Woldian volunteers monitoring it. They can help you and they help me keep things consitent I do not believe you can purchase a non fully charged wand. But if a CC staffer says yes, feel free.

Atlas rises early, puts on his armor, and heads to the ground below for his morning exercise/stretching. It feels good to be back to it after so many difficult nights.

After he completes his routine he heads back up to get breakfast and to gather with the group in anticipation of Gaston's arrival. Upon doing so he ensures that everyone heard the rumors from yesterday. "I don't want everyone getting worked up over this, they are all just rumors, but I have a hard rule about keeping secrets from those that are watching my back. Now you know what I know, interpret it however you want."

Irdalas ponders the rumours. "Hmmm, it could be that the Chancers club has allowed Gaston to come this far with his gold but that before they let him join he really has to prove himself with an extra hard task.
We should be on our guard.

Irdalas dons his armor and gets ready to move out.

After a good night sleep, finally,I wake up, wash up, then dawn my armor and gather my equipment that I will need for the next few days. "ok I think I am all set now" I speak out loud to anyone that will hear me, as I look over my gear. While waiting for everyone to finish their morning activities I grab my backpack and a chair. I place the chair by an open window and take a seat. I look out over the tree and beyond at all the wonders and morning goings on taking it all in. So much going on.

Atlas shares with the group, Gaston may be a bit more on the talk side than the walk side. The only minor puzzle then involves this trip to the Eastern Wood. Could it be more dangerous than it seems? Perhaps, but now all in the group are at least aware of the possibility. the group prepares themselves, adjusts packs, dons armor and all that goes into the start of an adventure. A brisk knock at the door reveals an elf with a small gift wrapped box. He nods politely, "Your Catacombs purchase and proof of receipt." He holds a small book for you to sign and take possession before turning quickly to leave.

the party arrives down the walkway to the main room and breakfast is being served. A few others are already there, but is also appears a fairly large group may have already passed through. Below, you can hear the sounds of animals and people calling out and preparing. The great caravan is heading out on the second leg of the journey this morning. 12 more days on the road to Emerald City.

Sitting at a table across the way are the men dressed in Silver and blue, finishing their meal and drinking what appears to be coffee from the aroma. You also spy an older human woman, sitting y herself at a sunlit table sipping her drink and gazing out across the tree to the north. Laughingwater is at another table with a large half orc woman and a human, neither one you recognize. Who is distinctly not present is Gaston. Moments after you are seated, a servant is there to place a setting before each of you and to ask the drink you wish to have to start.

"Water please," Caius says while nodding to the servant. I recognize most, but not all. And Gaston is absent. Curious? Caius stands and walks towards the older human woman. He bows and says, "As a priest of Gargul, I greet you. My name is Caius Graycloak. May the god of life and death watch over you this day." As Caius stands, he continues: "I could not help but notice that you dine alone. Would you perhaps like to join us at our table? We are a good lot and always interested in the story of others?"

OOC: I sold the rest of our extra items on Party Treasure. So, another 113 gp for each, and few pieces leftover.

I purchased a Healer's Kit, and Masterwork Thieves Tools, a small gem (the weight is getting to me), and to everyone's joy (I'm sure), a harmonica that I don't know how to play yet. :)

We'll have to decide who is carrying the Wand Of Cure Light Wounds. I think I should be out for sure, as I suggested it... and the cleric should probably be out, so we don't concentrate all of our healing power on 1 person. Might be best to have someone who is "less" of a fighter, or at least more of a "distance" fighter? What do you guys think?

Caius heads over to speak with the woman sitting alone and after introductions, invites her to your table. the woman calls herself Moana. She is in her late forties, early fifties perhaps. Her eyes are wrinkled about the edges and her face is tanned from the sun. laugh lines are about her mouth and rosey cheeks, but as Caius looks into her steel grey eyes, he sees a depth of sadness within, yet framed with a spark of defiant light. She smiles but declines, "I prefer my mornings alone with my rising sun and coffee, but thank you Caius Graycloak of Gargul. When you return perhaps you can come and see me. If, that is, it is not the first rays of the morning." She smiles and returns to her coffee

The servant leaves to fetch the orange juice and milk as requested. "I will bring a pitcher of each, in case the others have a change of heart." The breakfast this morning is blended fig with cane sugar wrapped in a flaky pastry. A side of hearty warm bread with honey butter, a bunch of bananas and scooped cantalope.

Everyone notes that Gaston is not present

It is not for another near hour before the man enters the room. He thunders in with a pair of comely women at his side. He is dressed for the day, a chain shirt can be spied beneath his lambskin shirt. One of the ladies is carrying a dark brown leather travelling cloak, a longsword is on his hip, a quiver and longbow are on his back. Even from here, you can see the quality and expense that went into all he has. You almost expect to see a bard or wandering minstrel singing of his bravery at his heels, but none appears. Gaston bellows a thunderous welcome and pronouncement of how glorious it is to get back into the wilds and unto adventure. He arrives at your table and seats himself.

The servant arrives and Gaston begins to eat and drink, "We leave in an hour, I hope you are ready. I cannot be kept waiting, Adventure is to be had this day!" he slams a hand down to emphasize his point

Atlas looks up from his meal as Gaston storms into the place. Noticing the women, he raises an eyebrow, but keeps eating. When Gaston sits down and starts eating Atlas keeps his composure, even though the man was not invited to sit with them. However, Atlas cannot ignore the man's manners any longer after his last comment.

With an even voice Atlas starts to talk, "Gaston, I'm going to say this once and only once. You will treat me and my companions with respect. I may be just a brash young man in your eyes, but my elders taught me to always respect myself and stand up for myself. Right now I feel like your behavior is going to put us in more danger while on this adventure and I'm not willing to accept that additional risk for me or for my companions. So either start taking us and this adventure seriously or you can keep your money."

Atlas stares at Gaston for another second, doing his best to show no emotion, then resumes eating his breakfast.

Sorry, a lot of these rules are still new to me, and quite a bit different than what I am used to. I was thinking anybody in the party could use a wand, once we knew the command word, etc.... Apparently, that's no longer the case. It looks like in our current situation, we're probably limited to Crosseye and Caius being able to use it. If that is correct (Dan, please correct me if I am mistaken), I would vote for Crosseye to hang on to it, to spread out our healing power a little.

Gaston pauses and turns a bit towards Atlas. "Treat you with respect? I'm not sure I understand your meaning as I have not done anything but. I brought you in and I wouldn't have if I didn't think you could keep up. That's respect. The adventurer code my friend."
Mack pulls the harmonica, but a few off key notes later he puts it away and Gaston chuckles, "Much better on the banjo there Mack." He chuckles again, Mack's plan of breaking any tension seems to have been successful

Gaston then continues, but more jovial, "You are an interesting lot, I'll give you that." He spreads his not to inconsiderable arms wide, "Adventure lads, is a thing to be grasped and enjoyed, not a chore or toil to be done. Heroics, songs, legends are all waiting out there to be seized and had and her you sit, " he gestures towards Udhomer and Atlas, "Dour, glum."

Gaston gets up, smiling brightly at Caius ashe rejoins the table, and seems to barely be able to control himself from squeezing the mans face as you might a cute baby, "Why so Serious?" He leans away, "Come now priest, you should celebrate your faith and god, not mourn them."

"I say that one can treat an adventure or the promise of adventure successfully without losing the joy of the excitement." He sits back down, "Atlas, all of you. Do not think my attitude careless or reckless or that i think of you as not companions at my side. Life is to be lived and I mean to do it."

Gaston sits back and continues his meal, "Ready in an hour then my friends."

An hour later, the ensemble gathers at the base of the Tree. The caravan has departed and the area seems deserted now The ground is trampled and rutted all about the Tree and you spy a few men descending the great stair with rakes, hoes and other tools over their shoulders to likely tend the wore ground. Gaston salutes up the Tree and following his gaze, you spy the Silver Bishop and his two companions. They make no gesture in return. Gaston puts his hand down and starts heading east at a brisk stride. The edge of the Eastern Wood lies a hard day's march away

ooc We may have lost Brian, i have an email to him but have not received a response. I have a line on two other interested players and so we may get more in our group

For those on the road with him to the Tree, they know that he's a jovial individual and he loves good conversation, so to see him so quiet would leave them wondering what he's thinking. However, he doesn't appear to be ready to say anything for the time being. He keeps his hand on his sword, his eyes forward and continues to follow Gaston as he keeps his thoughts to himself.

How dare he speak of celebration! Gargul is a God of balance, of life and death. He is not celebrated...he is worshiped and...feared. I cannot accept this man's joviality or his godless nature. I will, from here on out, seek his conversion to the God that commands all things.

Once on the road, Caius notices Atlas' introspection and falls into march next to him. "Atlas," he says, "You're one of the most gifted leaders I have ever worked with. You have the intuition and wisdom of a much older man, and a fearlessness in your adventuring spirit. This is why I have chosen to follow you. But I can tell that something is amiss with you, and, as Gargul teaches, to work through doubt one must speak. So, tell me, what is it that disturbs you?"

Walking up to the base of the massive tree are a halfling and a centaur. The halfling wears a long red coat over some kind of armor beneath. Daggers are visible at his belt, poking from the tops of his boots and tucked into the insides of the coat. He carries a backpack and not much else. He has unruly hair of a platinum blond color and he also wears a goatee. Both appear to be in need of a trim.
With a serious look that would be far more at home on the face of a dwarf, and old dwarf at that, than on the face of a young looking halfling he asks the Centaur, " This is the place she keeps telling you to go? I mean it's breathtking and all but why would she send you to a tree. Centaurs don't live in trees. It's the place I keep seeing too, and it's where the clues led, so let's see what this place has to offer, eh Carver? Someone here must have some coin to sit in a few hands of cards at least."

The centaur, wears a lot of armor painted in almost a pure black, has a holy symbol of Gargul painted in white on one of his pauldrons. The horse skin is a pale just off white and he has red hair on his head. He is loaded with a variety of weapons, from swords to a bow to a lance. He looks a bit young, but you never know, he is a centaur after all.
"Cam, you know I was half delirious with that damn fungus when she showed up this time, although when she arranged to have it cleared up was a good thing. But yes she did say this was the tree and to hurry and get here on this day. Why, she has more than one reason I expect, but let's go in and get a drink, a human sized glass of wine a day might be enough for you, but me? I need to quench my thirst."
With that, the odd couple head in.

Meeting on the Road - Co DM Dan K
Thursday October 9th, 2014 10:33:08 PM

Crosseye moves off in front of the group taking the lead upon the road. There is little cover on the south road from the Tree that connects to the main East West road. There is some though, unlike the main road itself.

Ahead you spy an unlikely travelling pair, a centaur and halfling, no wagon no escort. Both talking about being lead here, or shown the way or some such talk. The prominent Gargul symbol upon the centaur lends more than a little credence to that possibility. Two travelers surviving means they are very capable or very lucky or perhaps, being watched over. Again adding to the credence of conversation Crosseye overhears as he approaches.

Cameron and Carver....
The tree is beyond large, like a mountain upon the plain and even from several leagues away it dominates the area. Approaching from the tree looks to be a small group of 7. Dressed for the road, adventurers, perhaps mercenaries. A lead man moves just along the side of the road with a 30' lead and seems to know his way about. Further back are the other 6, one perhaps is a child and one wears a gray cloak causing him to stand out a bit. The other stand out is a large man, in the center of the group, striding along, a large grin upon his face and looking all around pleased with himself. There is something about him, familiar yet, like a person you might see or remember from a dream, a composite of others you know.

Cameron (David F) HP11/11 Character sheet in progress
Thursday October 9th, 2014 11:01:21 PM

The halfling leans over and whispers up to the Centaur. Well it would be whispering, but the centaur's ear is at least five feet above the halflings head, so it's more of a stage whisper, not really very subtle.
" Their scout looks like he might be able to hide, no halfling mind you but a scout for sure. Think this is gonna lead to trouble? There's alot of them and I know that you can't hide to save your life, so lets just be nice. I mean this close to the tree they can't be brigands, right? The big guy look familiar to you?"
Getting a better look you can see the halfling is wearing, yup those are boots, odd for a halfling. The coat definitely has had some kind of patches removed from it. The discolored cloth beneath makes them look like they might have been the badges of the Mailed Fist, a sight you have seen before, but the red color is different from the uniforms the Fist wears here.

I don't think starting off with a fight was what she had in mind, shall we just stand here and wait for them to get closer?" Carver returns in a sort of whisper.
There might have been insignia on his armor, it's been painted all black, and not very long ago either.
He does shift his shield to his arm, but just lays his hand on the pommel of his sword, leaving the lance in a sheath made for it, carried on his back half.

As they approach the newcomers, Atlas works to change his mood. Speaking out loud to everyone, "One of my mentors used to tell me to expect the best, prepare for the worst, and capitalize on what comes. On your guard as we approach."

Before they get to the newcomers, Atlas quietly responds to Caius, "Caius, regarding your question earlier, something just doesn't feel right with all this. My gut is telling me that we should turn back, that someone will fall due to this fool's carelessness. I don't want that to happen on my watch, so I'm just thinking through the possible scenarios and how we can stay alive through them."

As Caius steps aside Atlas steps up. With a neutral look on his face he speaks to both of them, "Caius is too kind, I am just the voice that happens to be louder than the others. To answer your question, the Tree appears to have room since the caravan has moved on. However, before you go, I would be interested in hearing about your journey. We traveled the roads a few days back and were hounded by green skins. Have you encountered the same?"

" Greenskins? You mean goblins? We saw some signs of them but didn't encounter any. We have learned through hard experience how to make a camp quite hard to see. Learned it in the Fist while we were hunting Gnolls. Didn't stop the snakes from finding us though."
An involuntary shudder races up Cameron's spine as he relives being crushed by the snake that woke him by wrapping itself around him.

"He could mean Orcs I guess as well, but no, we've only really encountered some zombies and a whole lot of gnolls." The first part is to Cameron the last is to the group of adventurers.
He turns to Cameron, "I have a feeling that they aren't going after the caravan, if they were, I'd expect them to be moving a whole lot quicker."
Back to the party, "We've been traveling a couple weeks, Cameron here is on his own mission I guess, but he is a good friend, so he's stayed with me while I was following a pointed suggestion made by one of my relatives. I've never been steered wrong by her, so I have started to listen, which I'm sorry to say I didn't when I was younger."
That comment seems quite funny coming from a Centaur who can't even be 20 yet, how much trouble could he have gotten in, and how young was he when he got into it.......
"So, where are you all off to? Since my Aunt pointedly said to arrive here at this time, I assume she meant us to meet you for some reason or another.
Oh, I guess we've both been idiots, let me correct that. My name is Carver, my little friend here is called Cameron."

"I'm Ramak" I say somewhat quietly, and then try to blend back in to our party.

I try to hide the hesitant and somewhat suspicious look on my face. I don't attach and trust others quite as quickly as the rest of the group seems to, and to me, it's odd that our group seems to change almost daily. It's not quite what I was expecting when I first left home, I guess. I'm still trying to figure out if it's just me. For now, though, I keep my guard up, and feel myself starting to close off just a little.

"You're still 'it'", I whisper to Caius, and then take quiet, large strides to the other side of our group... in slow motion. :)

Coming up the road and obviously in a hurry to catch up, is a Minotaur. He is at a steady jog to close the gap. He lifts an arm and waves as he comes in a single attempt to gain anyone attention. He does not speed up though, it might be that he is already at his top speed. He is still several hundred meters away

Cameron spots the Approaching Minotaur as soon as he leaves the lift from the Tree. He raises a hand and points back toward the approaching figure and says
: He seems to be trying to get your attention, do you know that guy?"
He remembers back to most of the Minotaurs he met in the Fist. Big, aggressive, not overly friendly, but they were shield brothers, and a brawl the night before was no reason for them to not stand by your side in the morning against a common foe.
He wonders what this development will add to the picture.

He nudges Carver and nods towards the antics. With a smile he whispers [b]" Remind you of two people we know?"[b]
He can feel the slingshot Bliss gave him tucked into his belt. He has nothing to remember the cleric of flower by other than the remembrance that Gargul does not tolerate frivolity in his realm. That memory is enough for a lifetime and he wishes to recall nothing else about the scatterbrained cleric of Flower.

"Carver, Cameron, you're story sounds like an interesting one, I should like to hear it at some point. As for where we're going, we are accompanying Gaston here to the Eastern Wood. The details are sketchy at best." Atlas waves at Gaston as he mentions him, and he doesn't hide his emotions when doing so.

"As for the green skins, I meant the goblins. We were attacked while on the road guarding the caravan while in the employment of The Fist."

As Cameron comments on the Minotaur Atlas takes a look. Sure enough, it looks like Bonivus. He mumbles under his breath he was the first one to sign onto this adventure stuff, what in the name of Gargul is going on?

Turning back to the newcomers, "Yeah, that's Bonivus, he's been with us since we began this journey. Not sure what happened to him last night though...looks like we are about to find out."

" You worked for the Fist as guards? We saw some goblin bodies on the way here, that must have been your work. Not a bad job. I can't think of anything that could be more prophetic than that. Carver's ancestor, she seems to know things. What she tells him is vague, but I know how to read between the lines. That and the dwarf that sent me this way, the clues he gave me, well they are still a mystery, but I'll figure it out. And when I do I'll have some stuff I'll need to take care of. Stuff I could use a few good men that know their way around a little violence. If they happen to be friends of mine and we get a little wealthy doing it, so much the better"
He looks at Carver for a second and then they both nod.
" So like Carver said, my name is Cameron Honeytamer Steelshaper. I am clan kin to the Steelshaper clan of the Scab, cleric to the lady of Vengeance, and former Lance Corporal in the Mailed Fist. We both left on good terms, there will be no bounty hunters dogging our steps. I can heal, I can be persuasive when I need to be, sneaky when I have to be and I also know my way around violence when it's called for. I want to offer my help in your endeavors. Take us with you to help this fellow and maybe we can help make the sketchy a little clearer. "
"What do you say?"

Cameron extends his hand out and up. It seems he is used to shaking hands with people bigger than he is. You get the impression Cameron could talk a brass donkey's ears off if he wanted to. Almost like he used to be a bard or something.

The two groups exchange names and handshakes and Gaston gives Atlas a rolling eye look and he stepas forward. "I am Gaston soon to be a rising star in The Chancers Club and the leader of this current expedition. You have already met my glum and somewhat somber companions". He gestures to Atlas specifically and the rest in general. "I am not one to pass or mock providence and so of course you can accompany me." Gaston extends his hand and shakes with a very firm handshake.

"There is nothing sketchy about my journey. I am heading into the Eastern Woods, rumors abound of it being haunted, aware like the Culverwood, inhabited by evil Druids and more. Old men and women love to spin tales of the place. I even heard of one about a witch living in a gingerbread house. I am going into the woods for 5 days and return to the tree where I will begin my rise through the Chancers Club"

Bonivus catches up, offering nothing other than an apology for being late.

Gaston claps Cameron on the back, "Ha! now this one seems to have the heart of an adventurer. No my new friend, this is not a wagering adventure. more a test of mettle and nerves." Gaston takes a big drink from his wine skin. I've already passed their other tests, archery, fencing, obstacle runs, everything they could throw at me. So this is the final piece, the wilds and what may come." Gaston claps his hands together and rubs them with a grin.

Crosseye takes the lead and moves out down the road looking for signs of passage. On the very well traveled road, however, it is a very tall order to make out new tracks over old. For the first part of the day, the journey is easy and light down the road. After the midday break, the group cuts north east and leaves the road behind. The Tree of Parting is still very prominent to the west, but now it is well over 10 miles away. A few more hours of a pleasant journey through the high grasses, which limit the vision of any not over 6' and all but mask the wold completely for the smaller folk, and the eastern Woods comes into view.

The line of trees seem to form a barrier of darkness. There is a heavy thicket of undergrowth tangled beneath large and ancient trees. It appears to be like no natural forest you have ever seen. To Crosseye and others who have studied and read of the regions of the Wold, it looks exactly as the deep woods of Culverwood have been described and drawn. Night is approaching quickly, but if you push it, you could possibly breech the borders before night fall.

Alas shifts his eyes towards Carver without moving his head, trying to see if he bites on the joke. Then he realized that Carver has no clue about his sense of humor, so it might be best to not give him a hard time right off the bat. To that end, Atlas grins at Carver as he walks over and gives him a slap on the arm.

"Just making light of our situation to keep the nerves at bay. Thinking through it, I would say that our best bet is to get within an hour walk of the woods and then take a short detour into the grass to avoid being in plain sight. This grass should make for a nice bed and decent cover this evening. What do you think?"

Turning to Gaston, Atlas gives him a stern look, then says, "It might be good for you and I to take a watch together tonight. Maybe we can find some common ground to make this trip a little more enjoyable for both of us."

To the Eastern Wood - Co DM Dan K
Tuesday October 14th, 2014 10:18:23 PM

Gaston nods as Cameron talks of his and Carver's past exploits, It does seem that Cameron is well on his way at understanding how Gaston thinks and operates. The group, as a whole, all think it a good idea to take that last few hours of daylight outside of the Eastern Wood and set up camp. Gaston nods as the party 'recommends' to him that setting up camp is the best course. "I agree with your assessment. Pushing into an unknown wood just as darkness surrounds us is a poor idea at best."

As Irdalas moves off with Mack to scout ahead for a bit, Gaston waves them on, "Take a look about and report back."

Gaston pulls a spade from his pack and ties a rope to each end. Then with one foot on the spade against the ground and his hands pulling the rope taught, he begins to walk in a circle flattening the grass. He does so until he has pushed down a circle of nearly 90' in diameter.

Irdlas and Mack do not find any tracks, other than those of the party that Mack initially discovered, of an note in the high grass. A fox trail cutting through that cross a couple rabbit runs and a set of passing deer is all.

A fire is set, bedrolls laid out and the first watch set, Gaston and Atlas. Gaston produces some type of folding chair and has a seat by the fire, poking at the logs with one of his well made leather boots.

trying to build upon the goodwill he has already garnered from Gaston, Cameron pulls some twine from his pack and sets off a little ways outside the 'camp' circle. Spotting the same trails as the others did, he quickly sets a few snares along the rabbit trails in hopes of catching a bit of rabbit for breakfast. Upon returning to camp, he asks to barrow Gaston's spade if the ground is dry enough, and digs their fire pit and another small hole a few feet from said pit. Before digging either hole he carefully cuts and bundles the grass from each site. The second hole is about three feet long and eighteen inches deep by about eighteen inches wide. He piles the extra dirt around the fire pit to further conceal it. He uses one of the bundles as a mat in the bottom and the other to make a mat to go on top.
" Normally, I prefer to sleep in a tree, high enough to not be easily seen and not be eaten by ground predators, us small folk learn that pretty fast. Without a suitable tree though I will be beneath any notice right here, close enough to the fire to be warn and ready to 'surprise anything stupid enough to wander into camp looking for us."
"I'll take second watch, It should be time for my devotions just about then."

The group sets watches rather loosely. Its a fairly large party and the basics become Gaston and Atlas on the first watch, Cameron and Carver on second and Caius and Irdalas on the third and final watch. This puts each swatch at a 4 hour interval. The first and last have an overlap where everyone is technically awake setting up or breaking down camp, while the designated watch do so.

Several move into the grass to set some snares to possibly alert the group if foes come calling or more practically, to catch some local wildlife for breakfast.

Atlas strikes up, or tries to strike up a conversation with Gaston an several different occasions during their watch together. At best, Gaston is disinterested, making basic replies to his inquiries, but the man cannot help but talk about himself and so Atlas learns much though makes no headway at friendship.

, Gaston is from the gold quarter of Plateau City, his family is fabulously wealthy, a noble born to high means through and through. Gaston is the third son completely uninterested in the epitome of boring life that the the churches offered and thus sought a different path. The bards songs and stories of the Dragon Consortium captured his imagination and exhuberance of youth and so he sought to learn and hone himself to become such a legend. Gaston fears nothing, man nor beast and has been on more hunts than Atlas could likely count. Why the Chancers? They are the best. Gaston offers no explanation as to why he believes this other than a simple man such as Atlas could not understand.

The night passes, the snares prove to not be needed to alert of danger and ineffectual at capturing any game for breakfast. The camp is broken up and the party heads towards the wood line. Gaston moves into the lead, "I will lead us to the heart of this foreboding and treacherous wood." Pointing to Crosseye and then to Irdalas, "Take up positions on our flanks at 30 paces." As Gaston breaks the wood line, he pulls his beautifully crafted ash re-curved composite longbow from his back. "Eyes sharp my friends.

Having not brought it up as a concern initially, and not wanting to seem overly paranoid, I keep my concerns to myself.... but I don't sleep during their watch. I may be a little tired the next day, but "better tired then dead" I've always said.

I eat some more rations for breakfast is no one is cooking rabbit, and help Caius pick up camp.

" Just remember what grandfather taught you and you will be ok. I can do this." I mutter to myself, nerveously, while help packing up the camp. With the morning activities done I head with the group towards the forest.

When I hear Gaston say he is taking the lead and wants me at 30 paces on the flank I look at Atlas for approval as I still see him as the true leader of us right now. But I do as ask ( for now) and take the left flank at 30 paces with my bow drawen and at the ready. I try to blend in with the forest as to not be seen and heard, as we head in the forest. In my postion on left flank I am looking for any types of tracks but ours and for anything out of place all the time ready to act.

Mack, I Love you. You have a healthy paranoia that may well keep you alive. I found the party's " Eh if you need me wake me up" attitude reckless and very lax. If people want to wake up in the morning after going to sleep, setting a watch is a good idea. With that said I will include another post I didn't think I would get to make yet and try to put it in spoiler text here for Mack. The rest of the players can of course highlight it and read it, but don't know anything about it in game.

As midnight approaches, Cameron checks with Carver to be sure he has the watch for a little while and heads off to the edge of the firelight for his evening devotions. At the edge of the firelight, Cameron kneels and pulls a silver holy symbol from inside his coat. The symbol appears to ne a silver framework that holds a pair of intertwined serpents in the shape of a double helix. One serpent is made from a red stained glass, the other from a smoke colored glass. He reflects on it for a few moments, quietly intoning prayers of devotion and vengeance against those who have wronged him. He then puts the symbol around his neck and pulls a small oilskin tube from his coat. He removes a few items from it, and lays them in his lap. During the next hour, he takes up each item, holds it for a moment, then proceeds to carefully examine it, using his holy symbol as a lena. While he does this, he chants a low sonorous prayer over and over. The items in the tube are 2 sheets of well worn parchment, the writing on them is too far off to be read in this light. The other items look to be 2 different locks of hair. One is honey gold and tied at either end with a pale pink ribbon. The second is a dark curly brown hair, tied at both ends with a piece of rawhide. When he finishes, he returns all of the items back into his coat. He then returns to the fire and to his appointed watch.

Atlas wakes up and looks about camp. Last night with Gaston was an utter failure, but then again he thought the chances of success were fairly low to begin with. This man is reckless. Then again, who am I to point fingers, I didn't take the time to ensure a proper watch any more than he did. Get on your game Atlas, this man is not worth dying over.

With his mind refocused, Atlas decides to take his morning exercise without his armor on. He goes through his motions slowly, deliberately this morning, making sure that every motion is perfect. Upon completion he eats some rations, helps the group clear up camp, and then puts on his armor.

As Atlas finishes up he hears Gaston barking out orders. While a part of Atlas cringes at the thought of Gaston taking charge, he also accepts that it is his adventure they are on and he is the one that is supposed to have the experience. It doesn't mean that I have to sit back and accept it though. I'll evaluate as we go. Thus far he's making sense with his orders.

Atlas nods to Crosseye and Mack as he sees their looks. He then moves up near Gaston and prepares to head into the wood, sword in hand and shield already strapped on his arm. "Mack, eyes sharp, you look a bit tired today, shake it off. Caius, I hope your prayers are answered today my friend. My gut tells me we're going to need some godly assistance."

Into the Eastern Wood - Co DM Dan K
Friday October 17th, 2014 7:17:27 AM

Gaston leads the group, well from his point of view, into the Woods. Most everyone glances over to Atlas for reassurance as Gaston does so. Gaston does not notice. The wood is thick and makes for a very difficult passage. It is more like the party needs to breech the woods than enter. Every piece of clothing you have seems to get caught and pulled at by the briars and brambles. Gaston shifts to his long sword and a healthy amount of cursing as he starts blazing a path through. The living wall of foliage is 10' deep and soon enough you are through.

Before you lies a deep and ancient looking forest. Very little sunlight reaches the forest floor. It seems to come though in specific beams like at The Tree of Parting. Unlike the Tree, these shafts of light do not fall upon anything of note, nor do you infer a warm feeling from them.

Cameron, Crosseye and Mack specifically note one thing, a complete lack of forest sounds or signs of animal life. This silence is shattered by Gaston's voice "Ha! I am in, stupid forest." Gaston turns, Now we make for the interior to set a camp." With that he moves purposefully. Several hours later you stand at what can only be the edge of the woods. However despite being western edge that you hacked through this morning, here there is no great briars or undergrowth tangles. It is just a normal woodline to the high grass beyond. Gaston mutters something under his breath and turns the group back. Just past midday and you are once again at the wood line looking west.

. "How can I keep getting turned around?! I am walking in a straight line!" He bellows. For his part, those trained in survival believe that yes, indeed you have been and how you keep arriving here is somewhat of a mystery to you as well. Finally, he turns around and growls for one of you to take over, The woods are not his friend. He doesn't like them and they don't like him. His frustrations over what seems like a simple task are wearing quickly on Gaston.

Cameron tries to remember all he knows about the awakened woods of the Wold. That amounts to wild rumors and wilder stories at best. He grew up close to here, but being raised by dwarves they don't tell you alot about the sunlit world of trees and forest dwelling creatures. They talk about stone and metal and forges. Probably not the best thought to bring up here.
Jancassais is a hunter. She teaches her followers how to huntand track. She teaches how to see things and to remain unseen. She also venerates those of her followers that learn, because knowing your foe is halfway to beating your foe.
So, safe only a few score yards inside the treeline, Cameron finds a largish pool of sunlight coming in through the canopy and sits down in it. He empties his mind as he had been taught in veneration of Jancassasis and pulls out her holy symbol and places it around his neck. To Mack, it is the same as the one he saw last night. To the others it is new. It appears as two snakes intertwined in a double helix. The framework is silver, and the snakes are red and smoke colored stained glass. With this symbol around his neck he casts a few minor spells. First he casts create water as a gentle shower around, but not on himself, as a gift to the forest that most likely rarely sees rain. Next he attempts to detect both poison ( which he deems unlikely to succeed) and magic ( which he has a great deal more hope in finding at least a trace of). Then he just sits, empty of mind, still of body and tries to feel everything he can about the forest.

As the group starts to consider their options, Mack takes a look closer to the ground where he does discover insect life. Mack starts to walk backwards, perhaps you need to know where you have been to get to where you're going?

Udhomer speaks up at this point, "My friends I am heading back to the tree. I have have thinking about this for a few days and have decided that I am would be more fulfilled with books, a laboratory and learning, than stalking off through the wilderness. I will stay at the Tree for a while, perhaps until the next caravan back to Plateau City and will then be moving on. I wish you nothing but good fortune and hope our paths cross again."

As Udhomer shakes a few hands, Bonivus declares that he will accompany him back and his own plans to move on towards Emerald City. To see the aftermath of the fall of Parnoth and what he might be able to do to help. With that, the minotuar and elder mage depart

Cameron finds a patch of sun and begins to go through a small set of rituals and casts a few spells Religion DC 10 Highlight to display spoiler: { the symbol is Jancassis, who brings forth revenge on those who deserve it, punishes those who break their oaths, along with those who forswear themselves.}
The water falls gently, but Cameron is able to detect no magical auras outside of the one he just created and a possession on Crosseye. Cameron is able to locate north and thus east

Crosseye too, tries to get his bearings and is able to do so. Scanning about. though, he is quite surprised to see nothing to assist in the matter.

Irdaslas suggests an offering, guessing at what Cameron might be up to. 'Breaching this magic by force, if at all possible, will lead to unfortunate events.'

Atlas asks Caius to shadow Mack and for the halfling to be careful.

Cameron's ceremony is complete, he received no great revelation, felt nothing outside the normal rythym of his own body.

Gaston remains quite through it all, arms folded across his barge sized presumably hairy chest. As Cameron stands and returns he has but a single word, "Well?"

So the group has little choice, it would seem but to now attempt the venture again. This time, trying very hard to mark their way best they can and to simply pay greater attention to where they are trying to get to.

Into the Eastern Wood Again - Co DM Dan K
Tuesday October 21st, 2014 9:18:45 AM

The group forms a basic plan to get deeper into the forest. Part of the plan is for Carver to try and drag a log behind him. The centuar ties the rope up and the group heads out. It does not take long for the log to get caught up in some tree roots. Then again in some briars. Again in more tree roots. Perhaps the only two rocks in the area manage to snag to the log down the line. It is amazing how many times the log manages to get caught on something, at least Carver does not have to worry about outpacing the smaller members of the party.

The party is lead by Crosseye, trying to pick out every detail and track themselves as they move through the deep and darkening forest. Mack continues walking backwards and scoops up a snail he spies nearby. The group notices nothing out of the ordinary, save what they have already noted, a distinct like of animal life. It is as if the forest was holding its breath and waiting and watching. Midday comes and goes, the log sticks again in some roots, requiring Carver to yank it free. The party cross another small stream and picks their way down and up several more small gullies. The terrain has and continues to be a challenge. Shafts of sunlight dot the landscape about you, but never shine on you. Their fleeting and often flickering beams distort distance perceptions and directions.

As the day, best anyone can tell, begins to draw to a close the group comes to a small clearing. At least that is what you thought until you fully arrived. It is then and only then when you realize the clearing is once again the western edge of the wood. The sun is diving behind the far horizon and nightfall is setting as you gaze westerly. None in the party see any signs of the camp from the night before, it is likely you are elsewhere along the 40 to 50 miles of the western edge of the Eastern Woods.

" Maybe the forest needs to get to know us before we can go further. Maybe if we sleep a night under it's trees it will begin to trust us. Somehow I don't think it liked the tree dragging idea. I would set a cold camp I think. If the forest is awakened and is trying to get a feel for us, cutting and burning it might not be too smart."
Cameron searches about until he finds a suitable tree to sleep in for the evening. He eats a cold dinner and then looks for small insects in the duff on the floor of the forest, particularly a spider , scorpion or centipede. If he finds one he keeps it for his nightly ritual. Jancassais may not have shown him the secrets of the forest, but she should be compensated with a proper sacrifice nonetheless. If Carver will let him, he uses the Centaur's rope to tie into his roost for the night. He again sleeps armored.
He volunteers again for the midnight watch. At midnight he will again pray for his spells, changing them yet again. Tonight his prayers are almost entirely silent contemplation after he breaks and consumes whatever poisonous little creature he found earlier.

Atlas is perplexed. There's a secret to these woods and it's not going to be easy to solve it. However, nothing wrong with a good puzzle...as long as we can solve it.

"We've walked these woods all day, watching every movement along the way. I feel confident that we'll be completely surprised when we are attacked by something we should have seen earlier. Let's be watchful on duty this evening. Same pairs as last night for the watch unless someone has a good reason to change. I'm in agreement on the lack of a fire."

Atlas goes about setting up camp. He eats a cold meal and spends the time talking with the different members of the group, getting to know them better and sharing his own experiences. When the sun sets and the group prepares for sleep he prepares for the first watch. Another night with our wonderful leader.

Atlas strikes up another conversation with Gaston that evening, even though he could really care less to learn more about him. The goal is to smooth out the relationship as much as possible and to see if they can brainstorm some ideas to find their way around this forest.

After his watch he takes off his scale mail shirt and sets it under his shield and sword next to his bedroll, then gets his rest so he's ready for what is to come.

Before turning in, to get some rest before his watch shift, Carver digs in his saddlebags once again. This time he pulls out fancy Lyre. He starts running his fingers over it's strings and after only a few moments he is shaking his head.
"This don't feel right, lets try the other one, maybe it will feel better to me."
he says softly, but not secretly. He then re-wraps the lyre in a piece of cloth and stores in the saddlebags and pulls out a case from deep down in there. Opening the case, it reveals a fantastic looking fiddle. He looks it over and sees the master makers mark on the base of the neck. "Hmmmmm, that looks like it's a Centaur symbol, I'll need to look at the papers later, see if I can find out the name of the craftsman."
He pulls the bow out, tucks the fiddle under his chin and draws the bow across the strings....
"Well, that sounded terrible, but it felt right at it's core, guess it's what I was meant to play."
After a few minutes, he repacks up the fiddle/violin and sleeps until his shift at watch.

Looking up to the sky and seeing the moon coming up I think to myself I know my directions, grandfather taugh me well in this so how/where are we going wrong. He never told me of such things like this in the world existed, maybe he didn't know either and to think I though he knew all or was was it he just forgot. What if we go at night under moon light and not during the day under sun light I need to see Atlas right away. I go and see him out. I find him just getting ready for watch, with Gaston.

"Atlas I have an idea! What if it is the light that is doing it to us! What if we try under moonlight to travel the forest and not daylight. Maybe we are getting confused because of the light and we need to travel In the Dark. Into the Eastern Wood Again - Co DM Dan K
Wednesday October 22nd, 2014 9:05:44 AM

The group makes camp again, this time inside the Eastern Wood. No fire is lit and soon enough it gets quite dark. If the forest seemed gloomy and oppressive in the daylight, it is triply so in the dark. Crosseye and several others know that the twin Woldian moons are out this night, but it does not show so much under the canopy of the trees. It is not pitch like one would find under ground, but overall human sight extends only 15' or so. The same watch order is kept, Atlas with Gaston and again he strikes up a conversation with him. Gaston is not in a very talkative mood though, "Everything is going wrong. I'll be a laughing stock is what this is becoming." Atlas is able to shift the mans attention from it being all about him, well for the most part, and get him to consider solutions to the problem.

Gaston has several ideas and slash and burn is on top of his list. "Axe and fire and we carve our way in." When Atlas makes it clear the group will not be doing that he throws his hands up, "Well those two," pointing at Irdalas and Crosseye, "Are the woodsman. Have this conversation with them. An elf getting lost in the woods? Who ever heard such a thing." Atlas can tell he is frustrated and something is definitely weighing on him, but Gaston changes the subject. His favorite thing, him. Atlas learns a good deal about the man that night. He attended the finest schools to learn the blade and bow and has been on many successful hunts. He follows no single deity, but revers all of them and has studied theology and the art of the arcane as well as alchemy. Hunting and adventure are by far his greatest passion though. Atlas also learns that, yes, Gaston and his family are very wealthy. He does not say it out right, but as Gaston's speaks of former adventures, he produces various possessions. His long sword of imperial steel, crafted by master dwarf smiths of Floating City. His handwoven chain shirt, his ash bow and so forth and so on. Gaston is pompous, arrogant and full of his own importance, but not perhaps entirely without merit as to why.

Crosseye mentions perhaps that the daylight was a cause to their getting turned around and a night venture might prove more successful

Mack suggests locating and following the stream

The night wears on, peaceful, but on edge. None on watch can shake the feeling that just beyond their vision, or tucked into the one shadow they cannot visually penetrate, creatures of the forest lurk and watch you.

ooc As Crosseye is making a move at night suggestion, I am declaring the time to be just after midnight at this point

Just before midnight, when his watch is to start, Cameron wakes up and unties himself from his perch. He drops down and slowly walks the camp, getting used to where everyone is in the dark. He knows Carver can see twice as well as he can, but also knows the Centaur is made for action, not observation. Once he has the lay of the camp and Carver is settled in to watch, he steps about 20 feet away from the group, kneels and begins his daily prayers. The darkness and quietness of the woods leads to an observance f quiet contemplation tonight. He retrieves the small poisonous creature he found earlier, breaks its body to release its venom and eats it. He feels the venom enter his body and quiets himself to follow it's progress. Once it has stilled his mind he focuses on the issue at hand.
How id the forest beating them?
His mind travels back to the first lessons at the forge with Uncle Morgan. He said the forging process was a labor of teamwork for those new to smithing. One member of the team worked the bellows and kept the fire hot, while the other turned the steel and hammered it out. Two sets of hands working as one.
So too were they taught in the Fist. The five members of the Fist each had their own talents, but in a fight they worked together toward a common goal, survival and victory.
How was this different?
Well, essentially it wasn't. They were now in for the long haul in this woods. So far it was passively trying to keep them out. It gently steered them back to the edge they had entered on. What would it do now that they had spent the night here? Would it accept them, or become more aggressive in it's attempts to shoo them out? If they worked together, not separately, they should be able to keep their heading and find their way. All of them helping the strongest tracker, Crosseye. That would have to work. He would mention that come morning.
He finishes his prayers, asking Jancassais to lend him the light of her vision to allow him to see in this place without a fire, and then he returns to watch.

Atlas wraps up his watch and contemplates Crosseye's suggestion. After a bit he turns to him and speaks, "I really don't know, Crosseye. I don't have a better answer, but I hesitate to walk these woods at night. We could easily loose one of us in the darkness. I'm not exactly comfortable with lighting torches and announcing our presence to everyone, but I have a few if we go that route. I'm also concerned that we could be walking into danger while tired. Lack of sleep can play with the mind and slow our reactions."

Atlas spends a few more minutes thinking about it and then speaks up, "Everyone, listen up." Atlas walks around and nudges those that are sleeping so that they can hear what he has to say. "We're all at a loss, so unless one of the gods is going to answer the prayers of our faithful, someone is going, someone is going to dream up a solution, or we're going to come up something to offer the forest, and I'm at a loss to what that would be, then we're going to have to take a little more risk. I would like to put Crosseye's suggestion to a vote. Should we pack up camp and try again under the limited moonlight to see if night will provide us with a better result than the day time?"

Atlas doesn't give his vote. He wants to hear what everyone has to say. He doesn't want people following him blindly. I don't have a clue what I'm doing, some day they're all going to realize this. I just like making decisions and moving on.

Alas wakes the group up shortly after midnight as Cameron returns from his devotions and puts the suggestion of a night walk to the group. Gaston sits up and wipes the sleep away from his eyes, Atlas lays out the options he sees and asks if anyone has others. Could the group appease the forest itself, offer some type of gift?

The meager light of the moons reveals nothing to Crosseye, the forest is dark and shadowy and beyond about 20' it seems to be consumed by the dark, yet even darker shapes loom within that black. Crosseye and others trained in outdoor survival though, know those other shapes to be the great trees.

Camreon gets back to the camp and looks as if he maybe has received some insight on what the group might do

I think Jancassais is mainstream enough to at least be recognizable at a glance, especially with euphemisms of " The Lady of Vengeance" getting tosses around. Also, Atlas could have seen/heard Cameron tonight since his prayers start about the time Atlas is coming off watch.
IC
" Well, Jancassais showed me and reminded me, in her cryptic way, how things are done by apprentices. When anyone first learns something, they work with someone more experienced. Even a master like my grandfather has apprentices help him at the forge, so that he can more closely focus on the armor he is crafting. I would suggest we do the same."
" Crosseye is our best tracker, trained in the craft. The rest of us are either untrained, out of practice or just novices with the talent, but not the training. Separately we pull the group in many directions. If we all focus on HELPING Crosseye. Pointing out clues we see, noting things he misses, but allowing him to take the lead I think we can hold true to an easterly course in the daylight. If that doesn't work tomorrow, then we can try the nighttreking idea. I prayed to Jancassais for the light to show us the path without a burning torch if we choose to do that."

Cameron has had some rest. If the others choose to press on in the dark, he is ready. However if they do they will be relying on the vision of Carver and Iraldas, who see better in the blackness of the dark forest rather than the trained eye of Crosseye, a trained and experienced tracker. Either way, Cameron is ready.

What Cameron is suggesting is using the "aid another" rules to boost Crosseye's chances of finding the right direction and holding to it. To do this we each make a survival roll with a DC of 10 ( a fifty-fifty chance even if we have no training or wisdom bonus). Each one of us that makes the DC adds +2 to Crosseye's roll when he makes his check. Also this shows we are focusing on finding one path into the wood, rather than each of us acting on our own. I suspect the actual DC for finding north and moving east is being modified by the forest somehow, but with all of us helping even a bad roll with all of those bonuses should find us the path. Guidance which Caius has in his prayed for spells wouldn't hurt either.

Cameron lays out some sound advise, everyone focus on helping Crosseye or whomever might be delegated to lead the group, through the woods. The advise is taken and accepted and the group resumes watch and sleep as the time dictates. Gaston shakes his head slightly, "You think you insult me by sarcastically attaching mighty to my name, but i have ever been the object of jealous peasants with less than I ranger." He says in response to Crosseye. "What I think is that the reason you are here is that I wanted you here and now expect you to do your job." he continues with a plain matter of fact if not a little bored tone of voice. "Get some sleep." with that, Gaston returns to his bedroll, places his sword beside it and gets comfortable. Gaston does not remove his armor.

Mack finds Flash, if he had gone far, he's returned to nearly the identical spot wher the halfling last saw him before falling asleep.

The night passes, Carver on watch with Irdalas as the others sleep. The forest is dark, terribly dark and eerily quite. A breeze stirs through the trees and sets the hairs on the backs of your necks dancing. The breeze comes from the interior wood, not the large grassland expanse to the west as it should. The continuous breeze lasts until morning, where upon it simply stops.

Dawn breaks and light fills the wood with shafts of sun that dance and flicker as the leaves block and allow it through. Camp is packed and the group heads out.

Most of the time, rations are no big deal, even on this short trip they shouldn't be a big deal. Generally, if the DM doesn't bring it up, I don't worry, but I carry some so I can carry my weight in the group.
Foraging, like you suggested, is a survival check and it halves your movement for the day, so for us halflings it would mean slowing the group to a crawl and not necessarily guarantee that enough food was found for the day. If foraging is necessary in a situation, the number of people fed is based on the amount the survival roll beats the DC. Every 2 over the DC feeds another person. This is another situation where aid another is a great help.

Taking his rope back, he recoils it and stores it. He dons his armor and is ready for the day, he again keeps his shield on his arm, but doesn't draw a weapon, leaving his option open if needed.
"I guess we are going to try to determine which way north is and then try to keep it to out left, since we want to head easterly into the woods?"
Carver assists with the deciding which way is north.

Atlas wakes up, goes through his morning exercise routine, gets back into his gear, and has a bit of breakfast while walking around and conversing with members of the group.

"Well, let's see if we can make any progress this morning. Eyes sharp, weapons ready."

Atlas takes up behind Crosseye. He begins searching for signs and relaying what he sees to Crosseye as they walk.

I am awaken for the last watch with the cleric. I put on my armour and head over to the cleric. I should get to know him better. What he is all about, if we are going to be taking watch together more often. So I go to him and ask about his religion and his skills with healing, hoping I can pick up things from him for future use. Maybe he can help and teach me in the ways of healing.
As morning approaches I start to wake the others then Sit down to a cold breakfast of my trail rations again. "So it looks like we will be trying another day of getting to the middle. I will try to do much better then yesterday and will all your help together I know we will make it this time."

After breakfast I head to the front of the group and ready to try to lead them in again and to the middle of this Forrest. I get my bearings for the right direction them head east again in the forest slowly moving to keep us in a straight line this. As we move I am always checking and looking for any signs that me have changed or come off direction. I use my great axe to cut though the ruff and keep in a straight line.
