Scene 1: The Town of Promise

Bigby asks Ahyoka whether he can learn to grass chant. She replies that it is not something that can be learned, but rather is innate to the manfri. "But as a sufficiently powerful druid, you need not worry, you should also be able to move with relative ease through most of the grasses.

Haemir heals Bigby before turning in for the night, and wakes to draw some Woldsblood to power him though the day. That done, he squints in the morning light before healing Grindar as well.

'Lil rises to face the day, determined to put a brave face on things despite the recent adversities.

Grindar shoulders the body from the cart, and hopes for a trouble free day. Sol asks for help carrying his gear from the cart as well, given his tendency to focus on the mind over the body. Seeing that Grindar is loaded down, Caelwyn and one of the dwarves offer to help. "Won't slow me down a bit, don't ya know." Caelwyn asks Haemir about recent events involving the book as well.

Xel'Aw starts prying into folks' backstories, starting with Bigby, but leaving the combustible 'Lil until later.

With many farewells to the mysterious Mahyawu, you eventually sort out a column trailing Ahyoka into the Sargrass. The day is hot, but the waving blades at least provide some shade. You quickly lose your bearings, however, with no landmarks in sight. Hopefully you won't lose Ahyoka along the way…

A few hours into the trip, Ahyoka stops the group with a gesture. "Here, take turns coming up to look at this. This grass ahead is known as bladegrass. If you try to move through it, it will most likely slice you to ribbons." She holds a blade of the silvery-green grass for inspection, and when you look at it closely, you can see that the edges are sharp with tiny sawtooths. "We'll have to go around. Fortunately, patches of the stuff do not tend to be overlarge." Skirting around it to the south, you find a way past after only a few minutes.

The day is otherwise uneventful, and by late afternoon, you arrive at the abrupt edge of the Sargrass. Blinking in the bright sunlight, you look out upon a large, oval moonscape of black earth, uneven and pockmarked with divots and hummocks.

Ahyoka steps into the open, turning to swing a welcoming arm wide. "Welcome to Rattledam!" The colonists, after all they have been through, stand around in a muddle, not quite sure what to do.

"that's too bad there's no way to learn that Ahyoka. It would be helpful I would imagaine, and thanks for confirming that I would be able to move throught this grass a druid. Unfortunately won't help Wolfgang here or the rest of the pack. Guess that eats grass then. Bigby determined to practice some of the native sayings."

Bigby turns to Xel'Aw, "ahem. Well, I don't fully know all the details. I'm a mutation. A beastfolk. There's a connection with me and Wolfgang. He was there when I awoke. Looking to learn more about us from the monks or whomever can help us understand our place in the wold. Why do you ask?"

Bigby takes in the view of Rattledam and looks for anything of note or out of the ordinary or for any weaknesses that need to be reinforced. (perception 26). Bigby remembers to thank Haemir for the healing. "thank you Haemir."

Grindar looks at the nothingness that is to be their new home, and says with a smile, "It appears to be a bit of a fixer upper". Though he is relieved to have arrived, he is a little disappointed there isn't more to see.

After looking closely at the grass Haemir thanks Ahyoka and taking out a note book he quickly sketches the barbs.

To Caelwyn he replies, "The previous owner of the book was a Bloodwitch who found ways to combine different types of magic, but as to why it changed me? I have no idea" he shrugs with a grin and a curious glint in his eyes that indicate he is enjoying the mystery. "I am still only part way through, maybe it will become clearer as I read on?" As an afterthought he adds, "The sun hurts my eyes now though" he says squinting up at the sky, "it makes my head ache"?

On reaching Rattledam Haemir bursts from the grass expecting to see a city, or maybe a village... or the burnt out shell of a few houses even. But the mounds of soil leave him perplexed and crestfallen. With hands in his pockets and head hung low he flicks a bit of mud away with his boot wishing it would reveal something.

It takes the elf over a minute him to converse.
"Ahyoka what happened here"?

Equally curious Fand takes to the air and circles the clearing (Perception:16)

"Well, Bigby, I am curious. We will all be spending a lot of time together it seems, so I figure it is best to get to know one another. Any hints on topics of discussion for the others?"

As they arrive in Rattledam, Xel'Aw listens in on Haemir and Ahyoka (Perception 21)

"More importantly," Xel'Aw interrupts, "can it happen again?"

And to Haemir, "Interesting - you know my eyes always burn in the sunlight as well. And your skin is closer to mine now than the other elven colorations. Perhaps the book turned you into a drow!" Xel'Aw laughs to show it is a joke. Then in Aklo says, Highlight to display spoiler: {"But the world is full of zanies and fools
Who don't believe in sensible rules
And won't believe what sensible people say.
And because these daft and dewey-eyed dopes keep building up impossible
hopes,
Impossible things are happening every day.

} After the momentary trance, all traces of joking are gone and Xel'Aw gives Haemir a long sideways look.

He then turns to the colonists, "We can start city planning tomorrow, for now let's stay tight and set up camp a bit deeper so we have some room to see anything approaching and stick together for safety. We'll setup parties to harvest materials from the Sargrass to build tomorrow. Anyone with experience building shelters, buildings, with raw materials, or weaving should meet with us now to figure out what we'll need. The rest of you can start setting up," he points in toward the center of the clearing, "over there."

Sol laughs at Grindar's joke.

At least he hopes it was a joke.

"Well yes, I was not expecting a four bedroom mansion with two en-suite bath rooms and several hosting rooms but this is a little more bear than perhaps I thought."

He smiles widely.

"Do not worry Grindar, we will be able to make of it what we want. We can create whatever we would like."

His eyes light up at the possibilities. Following on from Xel'Aw's start, Sol takes out his notes and looks through the list of skills the various settlers have.

"Tomorrow I will go through this list and begin sorting workers into different shifts to do different things based on their skill sets. It has been a few years since I have done anything like this, but perhaps it will come back to me."

Caelwyn looks around at the barren spot. "Woldsblood" he mutters to himself, inspecting the terrain. "I suppose it is free of grass, at least."

He remains vigilant for any sign of danger (Perception 19). He also resolves to keep a closer eye on Haemir. The elf does not seem much changed in his personality, but Caelwyn is unsure of exactly what this book may have done to him...

'Lil slaps Caelwyn on the back. "That's right, pretty boy. No where to go but up." She takes a knee. "Lord Domi, this whole thing has been an ordeal. I've been tryin' my best, and I hope I done ya proud. Thanks for bein' you and showing us what bravery's supposed to look like." She stands.

"Right then. I'd love to sleep with a roof over my head tonight." She looks around. Any buildings standing at all?

Bigby is pleased that he can move through the grasses unhindered, although it won't help his packmates. He relates to Xel'Aw what he knows of how he came to be, and thanks Haemir for the healing.

Haemir tells Caelwyn what he knows about his book and its effects, as Fand does some airborne scouting. Looking around a little crestfallen, he asks Ahyoka what happened here in Rattledam. Caelwyn mutters Woldsblood and Ahyoka agrees. "It is said that when the immortal Sargrass was born, other powers took a disliking to the upstart. They attacked it, and opened planar doors between the Wold and the Shadow Realms. This flooded the entirety of the Sargrass Plains with Woldsblood, starting right here in Rattledam. The Fey Queen made the Plains disappear, taking them to the Vales of Twilight to be preserved for another time. As we have seen, the Sargrass survived, but not without some…changes. And it seems that this place remains inhospitable to it, even after all this time and distance. Can it happen again? We do not know, but it seems unlikely at least for now."

Xel'Aw continues his conversations with Bigby and Haemir, and waits on Ahyoka's answers. He jokes that perhaps the book turned Haemir into a drow, then speaks in Aklo, but only draws a blank stare from Haemir. But come to think of it, he does halfway look drow-ish and the sun is hurting his eyes…

Grindar cracks a joke to hide his own disappointment in their choice of new abode.

Sol laughs at Grindar's joke and adds his own. He then starts going over his notes and thinking about how to divide the colonists into shifts by task.

Xel'Aw picks things up from there, starting to organize a plan. Smithira joins in, and seems to have a pretty good head for organization. She isn't a weaver, but her carpentry skills do give her an idea of how things might need to go together. And she seems to have a way with getting the others to move, without being outright bossy. The others fall into line, and start setting up camp as directed.

Grindar will pitch in where ever he can, he has no skills for construction, but he is willing to learn. He hears Sol's enthusiasm, and his spirit is lifted a bit, then he says, "I suppose it will be nice to be able build our settlement to our tastes, however it would be nice to have at least one structure so we could study it to better understand the construction methods best used in the Sargrass".

He would go hunting, but traveling the Sargrass is a skill he hasn't obtained yet.

'Lil's feelin' a little outta place. She ain't got much in the way of useful skills, but she's willing to do grunt work.

For now, she wanders, staying within eye/earshot of everyone else, but getting a feel for the place. She looks for any standing structures, or at least remains that can be fixed up quickly to provide some shelter.

Bigby listens and then asks "how long ago was the Sargrass born? And who took disliking to it?" Bigby asks the question aloud not fully expecting to get all the answers. Bigby nods to Grindars suggestion. "so can we plant any of the sargrass in here without it taking over Rattledam is the question." (knowledge nature 27).

Bigby later goes on to access what types of grass are around the vacinity and if any of them he can identfy that can be used for water as was taught to them by the manfri. what was the source of water for the people of rattledam? (survival for grasses and water: 23. Perception for grass, water, or dome) Bigby wonders. Bigby will also inspect the dome to see what it made of. not that he's an engineer of any kind, but he is curious.

Something about the look Caelwyn gives Haemir unsettles him (Sense Motive:21), reminding him of the distrustful look the Paladin gave Xel'Aw and Grindar when they first met. Dissapointment swirls in his stomach and he turns away only to find Xel'Aw still staring at him. Looking back and forth between the half-elf the and the Drow his stomach tightens in to a knot as the anger threatens to overwhelm him, until a distant part of his brain chuckles and thinks 'What is the Wold coming to when a Drow gives you a sideways look...?'. Looking back at the Paladin once more he shakes his head and turns away to stride towards the centre. A quote from a famous Hook City writer crosses his lips - and maybe to the Paladin or maybe to no one in particular he mutters; "The more you question my loyalty - the less you deserve it"...

By the time Haemir finds somewhere to sit all care about what everyone else thinks has vanished along with the rage - to be replaced by the cool breeze of logic, taking his folding stool he sits and taps a pen against his chin staring at what was once Rattledam lost in thought.

Taking his notebook Haemir sketches engineering designs, ranging from from shelters to a simple aqueduct made from some of the more bamboo like grasses (Engineering:14). After a while Fand lands by his feet and he reaches in his pocket to feed her some seeds. Then as if realising it's dinner time a small weasel with a cream coloured skin and little brown patches (resembling an eye mask) creeps out of his sleeve and looks expectantly at Haemir, who then feeds him as well.

Then the usual jovial (s)elf surfaces and he begins directing, working and reassuring the refugees moving amoung them creating water (with a cantrip - ensuring none is spilled) and asking Ahyoka which of the surrounding grasses will work best for the tasks at hand, keeping his eyes peeled as he does so (Perception:22 & Fand:18)

Xel'Aw continues to collaborate with Sol, Smithira, and Ahyoka toward the basic steps of setting up a lasting camp here.

"Issue is, without raw materials, our skilled labor is useless. And we'll need to get trade going as well, so we'll need a way to either connect to the outside world or connect to local peoples for a few reasons - the raw materials I mentioned, but also providing a reason to stay here. People aren't going to settle in a hostile land without luxury supply, which in this case is as simple as a soap, tables, chairs, maybe a roof. And they're going to want some reasons for being here. Otherwise why not stay in Hook City and try making it big there. Maybe someone thinks, 'This is where I'll open my tavern,' but if we don't have the foot-traffic to make a tavern meaningful... And uh... we may also need more people in general to supply needs. 30 people won't be able to meaningfully settle a place..."

Xel'Aw continues at length creating a list of needs and sorting those needs into priorities, but raw materials for a new city keeps coming up on top, maybe after security, but how can they secure an area without structures, and how can they have structures without...

Xel'Aw deeply enjoys the debate with the intellectuals on how to proceed and continues making notes during his watch, but still keeps a fairly vigilant eye out (perception 17)

Sol is too distracted by his attempts to help arrange the refugees and aid Xel'Aw, Smithira and Ahyoka to really pay much attention on his watch ((Perception 10)).

"Well Xel'Aw, did I pronounce that right?"

He pauses for a moment before speaking again.

"The people of the Sargrass lived here I assume using the materials at hand. Ahyoka, what do you suggest? Your people live in the Sargrass what insights can you offer us?"

Sol does notice Haemir sitting off by himself for a bit, and makes a mental note to see how he is doing later on. ((Perception 17))

Caelwyn thinks he heard Haemir mutter something as he walks away, but doesn't press the issue. (Perception 12) He does not inherently distrust the elf, but he is wary of unknown magics and knows the influence certain artifacts can have over even the minds of those who are good at heart. He will cast Detect Evil on Haemir as he walks away, just to be safe.

He then turns his attention to the situation at hand - finding shelter. He listens to hear what Ahyoka suggests, not knowing much about using grass for construction material.

Ooc: Does the target of Detect Evil know it is being cast upon them? If so, Caelwyn does NOT cast it on Haemir. Also, can you use Detect Evil on inanimate objects? If so, and if Haemir can't feel or see it, Caelwyn will cast Detect Evil on the book instead.

Grindar casts about for something useful to do, but doesn't settle on anything yet. 'Lil also wanders about, looking for something useful for shelter, but finds nothing standing, and no obvious ruins—just bare earth. Bigby looks at the soil, which seems rich but not a blade of grass is growing here. It must be as Ahyoka said, the Woldsblood did something here that keeps the Sargrass out, and there is no other source of seed nearby for anything green to spring from. Just outside of the bare patch, he does find the grass that can be a source of water, and a yellow grass that Ahyoka is pleased to learn of. "That is wheat grass, or chorly. The whole thing is edible, from the seeds in the pods at the top to the roots, which are like your potatoes back home. What a lucky thing to find right on the border of your new home!" There seems to be a good-sized field of it. A human colonist comes over to listen in, and introduces himself. "Jarl Winspeed's the name, and farmin' is my game. I reckon I can figure out how to make something uv that there grass. Also got some seeds in my haversack. Might be worth trying to see if something else can grow here in this soil. It looks rich 'nough, anyways."

Haemir gets a little worked up over the distrust shown in response to his recent changes, but manages to mostly keep it bottled up after one snarky comment. He gets over it, mostly, and moves about helping the colonists and looking for anything interesting.

Caelwyn hears Haemir's muttering, and, furrows his brow in concentration. Caelwyn Highlight to display spoiler: {Neither detects as evil.}

Xel'Aw makes note of the lack of supplies, and begins creating more lists of needs and priorities. He seems a little obsessed by it, even. Looks like he enjoys debating the details with those who are willing to verbally joust, but he keeps a keen eye out when his turn comes to watch.

In answer to questions from Sol and others, Ahyoka suggests doing a wider survey in the morning, to see what other assets might be at hand. She notes that old Rattledam was actually named for a wellspring at the center of the town that had been surrounded by stonework to capture its wealth of water. Looking around, you see nothing of the sort. One of the dwarves gets a gleam in his eye when he hears the word 'stone' and suggests maybe an excavation might turn up this old stone work—if only there were any tools available.

Before you can start any such survey, one of the colonists shouts, "What's that?" and you turn to see an extremely tall humanoid creature striding through the wheat grass towards your camp. Broag instantly issues a call to arms and moves to block its approach.

Caelwyn immediately seizes his spear and shield and hurries to stand beside Broag, blocking the newcomer's approach. He holds his shield in front of him, points his spear at the tall figure, and calls out in a commanding voice:

"Halt! You approach our camp without declaration of intent or identity - stop there and declare yourself before proceeding any further!" (Indimidate 19)

Grindar runs to the front of the line, standing next to Caelwyn with Cyrchwr Mawr at the ready. He tries to identify the intruder, Knowledge Nature 6 if the humanoid is of the giant sub-type, add 2 for his favored enemy

He then says to the Tall Humanoid, "If your a friend, welcome, if your a foe, leave or prepare to meet Gargul!"

He then readies an action to make a two handed charge if the humanoid makes a threatening move perception 24 +2 if Giant sub-type

'Lil stays quiet, but watches the thing approach. She studies its gait, the look in its eyes, anything for any sign of hostility. She shares her findings with the group.

Bigby and Wolfgang will ready a charge against the tall man should he threaten the group. (perception: 12). Bigby tries to access the creature with knowledge nature (29) and will communicate with the group if he can identify what the tall man is.

Sol looks at Xel'Aw's grasp of different languages, and decides to attempt his own greetings in languages Xel'Aw hasn't tried yet.

Afterwards he simply picks up his staff and prepares for a possible attack. If the creature attacks first, (and only if it strikes first) Sol will use Hands of the Apprentice. ((7 to hit, 0 damage)) if one of our side attacks first he will demand they stop.

Caelwyn joins Broag in the front line, as does Grindar, and calls in a menacing tone for the figure to halt. Xel'Aw and Sol offer a range of greetings in various tongues, a little more welcomingly. 'Lil stands ready as well, and closely observes this creatures mien. Bigby readies a charge too, while Haemir readies a shot.

In response to Xel'Aw's first greeting, in common, the creature halts, smiles, shows his hands, and says, "Ah, yes, 'friends' good sounds it does." As he speaks, his hands twitch a little, not like a spell casting but the drow may recognize it as similar to their nonverbal communications. Up a little closer, he looks like a stretched-out human or elf, about 7 feet tall and rail thin. He is also walking on stilts, which explains his walking across the grass. His movements look a little painful, and you can see that he is injured. He carries a short spear loosely, it doesn't look like he is planning to use it at the moment. With this last, he unslings a weird slug-like creature, hanging from a cord over his shoulder, that matches what you have heard of as a prairie pig.

He looks at you expectantly.

The party, accepting the newcomer's greeting, offers welcome and aid. Caelwyn, Grindar and Xel'Aw correctly surmise that this is one of the plainswalking climbers that you have heard about. 'Lil's healing is greatly appreciated, and removes some of the awkwardness of Needle's movement—the rest seems to be innate to his altered form. Sol
Greets the newcomer, and then checks on Haemir, who has seemed out of sorts of late.

Upon receiving this warm welcome, Needle gives a crooked smile and offers the prairie pig up for the breakfast campfire. Broag and the others follow the party's lead, if perhaps a little more suspiciously, given all the trials they have been through recently. Ahyoka seems very pleased to see Needle, although they do not appear to have personally met before.

In answer to your questions, Needle says, "People mine were part of the Sargrass before it was disappeared and taken to the Valley's of Maab during 'The Interval'; we 'insiders' from the before time have been returning to the restored Sargrass for moons several, but have been expecting 'outsiders' like most of you. When we heard that newcomers were arriving on the east and west of the Sargrass restored, representatives we sent to seek them out. I thought that Old Rattledam might be a good place to seek you, and here are you! Are you planning to restore the dome and Rattledam rebuild? If so, I would be happy to learn you some things that we have done over the years, how to weave the grasses into structures that will protect and enable your existence here. If you would like to be shown." To Ahyoka, he adds, "Glad I am that helped them you have, and Rattledam knows manfri wisdom again. Too long has it been." Of all of you he asks, "How did you get here? Hard it is to move safely across the grass. And are there so few, it seems no enough."

'Lil don't know much about the Sargrass, but she knows knowledge of weaving the grasses is a big deal. Adventurers back in Hook City sometimes had steelgrass armor that only one person in the whole city could fix.

She inspects the "stilts" the dude uses. Are they tools, or are they actually part of his body?

Either way, she's real glad to actually have an encounter with something not trying to eat her. If he looks hurt still, she'll channel another 4 HP of healing.

Haemir replies to Sol that he's absolutely fine. It would be easy to conclude that with a pen in his hand and the chance to design something ... the Wold could be ending and the elf would probably be in his element. Whatever traces of stress he'd shown have long gone, but he thanks Sol for asking.

When Needle asks about Rattledam Haemir confirms they are intending to rebuild the settlement and watches Needles hands as he talks with interest, trying to see if he his mirroring what he says by using the same action with the same word.

In response to Bigby and 'Lil, Needle rattles off some quick, straightforward ideas for grilling the prairie dog wrapped in some wide, cut grass blades. "In keeps the juices! And yes, with some time, teach I can some of the grass weaving methods, those to do with building up, up, up!" Needle looks to be on actually stilts, although his body and legs are also unnaturally elongated.

Haemir reassures Sol before welcoming Needle and watching his speech and hand movements, but can't see an obvious word to gesture correlation. Perhaps the movements are applying some sort of emphasis or modifier to the words, but you can't quite puzzle it out. Sol starts recording some of Needle's insights for future reference.

Caelwyn, Xel'Aw, and Grindar inquire into the beliefs of the Climbers. Needle replies, "To honest be, people mine—plainswalker and climber both—are divided about outsiders. However, more these days recognize that important to the future of the Sargrass will be outsiders, and so some of us have come to actively help. Few of the others to directly oppose you would be inclined, unless you prove hostile, while most to make up their minds will wait and see, think I. We have seers and wise ones who foretold your coming, and so here am I!"

That day, he undertakes to begin showing those who are interested how to select and treat the right grasses to begin weaving some huts for shelter. This will be good practice for when you build the dome, which is much more complex and dangerous due to the heights involved. Smithira, with her carpenter's hands, seems to take to it well, as do a few of the other colonists, and Ahyoka seems quite adept at it as well. Others are less handy or patient, or are deterred by the occasional steel grass cut.

(Needle did not require any further healing at this time, so you can save the resources)

Later in the afternoon, there is another shout of alarm from one of the colonists on guard duty, and another rush to meet a potential threat. The nearby grass parts to reveal two figures. One is an elf covered in head to toe tattoos, along with an impressive assortment of nose and cheek rings. He has a 12" blue mohawk haircut and a giant backpack covered with pockets and pouches. The other is a human, unarmored and covered in scars. Upon seeing the group of colonists and the Climber, they seem not at all surprised.

Blue mohawk dude turns to the scarred man and says in a surprisingly smooth voice, "See, I told you my dream was woven shady, and I haven't gone walker on you. It was a great pick to come here and meet this pack!" 'Scars' retorts with a friendly jibe in a deep voice, "Yeah, yeah, don't act like a little piggy, we're nowhere near weaving the last thread on this one. But we're being rude."

'Mohawk' turns to you, somewhat abashed, and says, "Hey, no need to get all shuttlecocked, we're not a pair of beaters or sunbaked!" He introduces himself as 'Freakshow' and the short, scarred man as Thich. "Like I was telling Thich here—hey, he is a monk like you guessed, wolfman--I 'partook' of the sacred 'shrooms, and dreamed of outsiders coming, dreamt they would surely perish if left to their own devices. Spectacular, Sargrass-style deaths too, not for the faint of heart! Especially if you're going to be wandering around on foot in the grasses for the rest of your lives. So here we are, because not all insiders think outsiders are grasseaters, after all. Plus, we were looking for Needle, so that worked out shady too. Hey, Needle!" he finishes with a wave.

'Lil, Bigby, Grindar, and Haemir all seem to get a bit of a handle on Freakshow's patois, causing him to smile broadly. "Yeah, you guys are gonna do fine here, if you keep picking up things so quick-like!" He nods to Sol's further welcome.

Xel'Aw asks why they are seeking Needle, to which Thich rumbles, "Couldn't let him be the only insider you meet, you might get the wrong idea about us old-timers. Or maybe it would be the right idea," he muses as a thoughtful cloud passes over his expression before returning to his normal placidity. Freakshow japes, "Besides, it's kinda like a joke. 'A Climber, a Harvester, and a Monk walk into an abandoned wasteland…" He cracks himself up a bit. Needle rolls his eyes, before answering 'Lil's question about the plan. "Well, the plan you must make for your self-sames, but we can help. The weaving of shelter is a priority. You need water and food, although we are fortunate that some of the right grasses close by do grow. Eventually a dome, if last long enough you do. Trade and travel, this will be important, but how you will do this, not sure I am." Ever-paranoid Caelwyn asks why they would want to help you. "Adventure!" says Freakshow, "duty" intones Thich (DC20 sense motive Highlight to display spoiler: {Or maybe he means 'guilt'}), and "habit" is what you get from Needle.

The newcomers, if permitted, will pitch in with the various tasks at hand, competently if not expertly helping with the grass hut weaving, plus the gathering of food and water, and the like. Jarl gets some tips from Freakshow about how to cultivate the cholly to increase its production of edible tidbits, and happily roots around in the nearby field a bit. Thich hums an odd tune while he works, and occasionally you can hear a harmonic of the note he is singing, much quieter and smoother than his own voice.

Eventually night comes, bringing some relief from the day's heat. It's time for watches and sleeping. Needle, Freakshow, and Thich all offer to help with the watching.

'Lil takes first watch and a swig of melancholy, and she is joined by Thich, who passes the time in companionable silence. Thich sits incredibly still, and there are times that you think he might be asleep, but he occasionally glances around alertly when there are sounds in the nearby grasses.

Bigby senses some complicated emotions behind Thich's blank façade, but sees no immediate threat.

Caelwyn warms to the newcomers a bit, and takes the middle watch with Freakshow, just in case. Grindar is also on that watch. In quiet conversation, he learns that the Harvesters are a free-spirited bunch that roam the Sargrass in search of interesting substances to gather, study, and experiment with. Lately, of course, they have begun to try to understand the mutations associated with recent events.

Sol also takes a watch, and records his thoughts on recent events.

Xel'Aw and Haemir do some pretty fine weaving,and keep an eye on things.

After an uneventful night, dawn breaks with the hustle and bustle of people intent on surviving yet another day. As breakfast is made with the root of the cholly and some strips of prairie pig jerky, you are all startled by a voice from the sky, which seems to come as much through your feet as your ears. Looking up, you see an impossible sight. A human-appearing man, dressed in brilliant white robes that reflect the rising sun, fills the sky. He stands on stilts that come to earth at points over the horizon to your northwest and southwest. He appears impossibly gargantuan. His voice comes again, just as loud, but more decipherable. "WHY ARE YOU HERE?"

At first Haemir's jaw drops at the huge figure ... then he smiles when Lil kicks off. Taking a long stare at the crazy sized man he concludes: "Nah you're really not that big I'm sure of it..." he says looking for holes in what he suspects is an illusion (Will Save:17 & Perception:10). "We are here because we are here..." he says as an afterthought, "our intentions are to rebuild Rattledam and trade peacefully with those who wish it. We mean no harm to those who mean us none, so why don't you stop with these parlour tricks and join us, you are welcome to our food and water should you need any" he says with a warm smile (Diplomacy:15). The party members react to this powerful presence with a range of responses, ranging from defiant to sleepy. The gargantuan man-thing looms over you for a few more moments before fading into nothingness. Haemir, despite his initial skepticism, thinks the man was real, and really that mind-bogglingly big.

You hear a gasp from Ahyoka. When you turn to look at her, she is white-faced and trembling, obviously shocked by what has just transpired. She looks from where the man was to the party and back again several times, before abruptly turning on her heel to walk away from the camp. The colonists watch the whole thing in mute shock themselves.

Caelwyn, who had woken up startled and confused by the voice, had watched in silence as the figure faded and vanished - he figured he had nothing to add to what had been said. He racks his brain attempting to think of what on earth that could have been - an illusion, or a real giant?

He turns to the colonists first, and tries to quell any panic as best he can. "Calm yourselves, friends! We do not appear to be in immediate danger. But clearly this land holds many surprises, and we must be ready. Remain vigilant as we go about our business, and we will do all we can to determine who that was and whether they pose a threat. But we cannot allow ourselves to be overcome by fear." (Diplomacy 15)

He is also concerned about Ahyoka's reaction, and quickly follows Haemir. "Ahyoka, what is it? Are we in any danger? Can you at least tell us about that...thing?" (Diplomacy 27)

Haemir turns at first to Caelwyn, but then speaks loud enough for the group to hear: "At first I thought that fellow was unreal, an illusion... I mean come on... who's legs or stilts" he says correcting himself, "that reach from horizon to horizon. It's a trick right"? he says and chews on his lip thinking. "But After examining him and focusing all of my will on him..." he falters then after taking a breath continues: "ok let me rephrase this. I think he may have been one of the aspects of the immortal Sargrass. I remember a wise spellweaver told me once that after the Sargrass plains vanished, that something was born afterwards. Three different aspects of the same individual. Sort of three opinions? Or three times. The future present and past? I'm not sure I understand it quite yet ... but I think we just told one of the immortal powers of the Sargrass Plains to erm... go forth and multiply" he says with a slight embarrassed look to Ahyoka.

"But then again, he did wake us up by shouting at us... when I was on watch in my clan we used to have a two second rule. If someone woke you up and you slapped them or punched them, it was decreed that it was a reaction and no penalty was earned. Perhaps he will understand...? YOU WILL RIGHT?" he shouts to the sky.

Xel'Aw responds to Haemir, and the others, "Is there a problem that? Also, how did we say that? I just figure, if a person really is big, they can condescend to us and be within our experience. Otherwise, they're just projecting... Bigby gets it. Alpha wolf doesn't have to make a big show of being in charge, he just is. But if he's some immortal power, then hopefully he's wise enough to give us a do-over as Haemir said, knowing our limitation of reaction in surprise of... well, something so outside our experience. Scary giant guy is gone without a fight, I say we thank 'Lil for the quick reaction."

Haemir catches up with Ahyoka, and asks her to explain the recent event. He adds his own supposition, that this was one of the aspects of the Immortal Sargrass.

Caelwyn bolsters the spirits of your fellow colonists, which seems to help them calm down a bit. He then follows Haemir in engaging Ahyoka.

Bigby congratulates 'Lil on driving away the apparition. 'Lil laughs off the encounter.

Xel'Aw joins some others in hoping for a do-over with the immortal, while Grindar expects that if you hang together, you can get through this.

Sol finally gets out of his bedroll and asks what that thing was.

Ahyoka turns back to face you, after your entreaties and inquiries. She seems saddened, but not angry. "You are correct, Haemir, that was an aspect of the reborn Sarr. In this case, the Walker-Sar, which seeks to preserve the ideal Sargrass as it was before being destroyed and carried away to the Vales of Maab. I and my kind find it the most worthy aspect of the Sargrass, powerful and dangerous and beautiful. I must admit that it pains me to see the Walker-Sar greeted so rudely, when I feel that it deserves reverence instead. Yet I know that you did not know or expect it, so I understand why you might have reacted as you did. I do not think you need to fear retribution—it could have crushed you if it were so inclined. I suspect that it was curious at your appearance here. Perhaps you will meet it again and have an opportunity to change your mind about it."

There is a chuckle from Freakshow, who adds his opinion, "And how did that turn out last time? Times are a' changing! Maybe the old ways need to change with them. Opportunities are surely coming, and I think that the Sargrass needs some new blood. You lot just might be it!" Thich nods quietly to show his agreement.

Despite their disagreement, there does not seem to be heated animosity between them. Perhaps that reflects the truce that ended the battle at the rebirth of the Sargrass.

She can't hunt, so she leaves the men to do that. She ponders her place here in the Sargrass. She was an emissary of a god who was not widely worshiped here in the Southern Continent, and she knew proselytizing was not well tolerated. Best to win hearts and minds through action and example, then. She didn't know nothin' bout surviving in the wilderness, but her companions had those skills available in spades.

She couldn't just sit around and wait until something needed healing or to meet the business end of Ramona. She makes up her mind and approaches Freakshow.

Haemir listens to Xel'Aw and stares at the dark skin in the back of his hand as he does so. When the bard finshies he replies squinting, "Thanks that's kind of you, I'm not sure what's going on but if what you say is true you guys have amazing night vision, but it's not so good in the day. Have any of your memories returned yet"?

He watches the hunting duo leave and then decides to go out on his own, not straying to far and letting Fand scout (Survival:24).

On his return he asks Freakshow, "What do you mean about the old ways? Do you mean this business about the differences between the restorationists and preservers? Which group are you"?

Sol looks crestfallen that his response could have been taken as an insult, and once he feels he's presentable he rushes over Ahyoka.

"Ahyoka, I would like to know if there is anyway you know of that I could atone for my behaviour with Walker-Sar. I was unaware how important it was and the others seemed to have it well in hand. I would like to make amends if you know of anyway I could do that?"

Caelwyn and Sol show contrition and try to make amends with Ahyoka, who responds with kindness. "Thank you for your politeness. I would think that there will be many opportunities to learn more about the Walker-Sar and the right future for the Sargrass. All the aspects of the Sarr are young, and still coming into their own. They may not be quick to judge when they have an opportunity to gain followers of their paths. Continue to show wisdom, and perhaps all will be well."

Grindar and Bigby do some hunting, with some success, coming back with some prairie pigs for cleaning and cooking. Haemir also comes back with some game to contribute, before conversing with Xel'Aw about his heritage—the latter trying to draw Caelwyn into the conversation—and asking Freakshow his views on the Sarr. Freakshow describes his beliefs as consistent with those of the Warper-Sar, and Thich nods along. "The grasses have remained static too long, and all the diversity of life has been squeezed out. It's time for something new, man. Change is good, stasis is death!"

'Lil asks Freakshow for some more practical info, and gets down to business learning some weaving.

During the course of conversations over the day, ever-practical Smithira brings up a topic raised earlier by the party and by Freakshow. "How are we going to keep this place going? We need contact with the outside to sustain ourselves and grow. We may have food and water, but what about the other things that we will need, such as tools and the like. Freakshow mentioned how getting around on foot will be hard for us 'outsiders' but no one has offered how we might correct that. You folks have any ideas?"

"Maybe we could ask Needle to teach us how to make and use the stilts he uses to traverse the grasses", Grindar suggests. "The thought of slaying a druid tree to make a boat seems distasteful to me", He adds. He then asks Ahyoka what her opinion is.

To Caelwyn, Xel'Aw responds, "I'm not exactly sure. I believe I am an educator or researcher of some sort with the Sage's guild... but they usually don't do much outside the city itself. Then again, as a non-human, perhaps they sent me off to be rid of me on some errand... I had hoped Haemir or Sol could direct me a bit better. Things are coming back to me, like I just remembered how to cast resistance and parts of another language, but the details of my life..."

When Ahyoka returns, Xel'Aw expresses apologies for not acting as he should, "Your friends are my friends, but I didn't know that was someone you venerated, my apologies.

He spends the rest of his time practicing weaving and in discussion about how to get trade-routes open for tools and other necessary supplies to build a city. "A floating boat would be nice for us to move, but eventually we'll need at least one clear path in so those less boat-blessed can reach us...

Caelwyn and Xel'Aw continue their discussion of drow and their treatment in the Wold, as well as the latter's memories or lack thereof. The broader discussion turns to the novel means of transport that are required in the Sargrass. Grindar inquires about the stilts, but Needle shakes his head, "The changes needed are quite…painful, and I'm not sure that most of you would care to take that path. It takes a special kind of calling." Sol recalls the talk about the boats that sail atop the grass, and Bigby supposes that the one you built during your ocean voyage, as mentioned by Haemir, burnt down with the rest of the colonists' gear. The colonists agree that it is unlikely to have survived the conflagration. 'Lil, thinking big, suggests going all out and building floating roads, not ships. Bigby really likes his fourth dimensional thinking! Xel'Aw goes the practical route, suggesting more mundane paths through the grasses.

The locals cast doubts on these last two ideas, however. "The grasses grow too fast and wild to keep paths clear. And the druidwood is exceedingly rare, and not easily obtained. Occasional ships are possible, but there is not enough in the whole Wold for a proper road." Thich adds, "But there is a place where you might get help in this endeavor. My people maintain the Stone Temple, in what is left of the Crystal Mountains, which has much knowledge and many items from the 1st and 2nd ages. I am sure that the monks there could provide assistance. I could lead you there, if you like."

Smithira enthusiastically supports this idea, and the others generally agree, even if partly motivated by wanting to have a lifeline to the rest of the Wold. The colonists turn to you expectantly. Will you undertake this quest?

"That sounds wonderful. I would very much like to come, it will be something new to learn! Though I would ask if anyone else could help carry my pack? I am not the picture of physicality some of you are, and as such I would appreciate any help in aiding me in spreading the weight."

He looks at each of the stronger party members to see if they offer to help.

Caelwyn is enthusiastic about the idea, but has one concern. "What about the rest of the colonists? Will our comrades be safe, do you think, while we are away? Are there any dangers besides wild beasts we should prepare them for?"

With exactly zero arm twisting, the party agrees to the charge set before them by Smithira and the other colonists. Grindar throws some shade, which he has gathered is a good thing hereabouts. 'Lil is in, despite wondering what kind of help might actually be available. Bigby inquires about the risks of the Crystal Mountains exploding. Haemir is doubly ready to go, Xel'Aw is on board, and Sol will go along if someone will carry his stuff. Caelwyn is on board if the colonists will be ok.

Thich clarifies, "I think the Stone Temple may have some ways to help us find druidwood or a druidwood tree. Getting there will still be hard, but should be worth the risk. And I am sure the other monks will help us when I tell them about your good works here. Bigby, you are right to worry about the Crystal Mountains. But I can guide you safely, as long as we work together and are careful. But if for some reason I don't survive the journey, don't attempt it alone. Without a monk, it would be certain death. The colonists should be fine here with their own talents, plus three insiders to help them along. Either path has risks, but a druidwood ship would be a game changer for your colony."

He suggests that you spend the day preparing, then set off in the morning. How do you spend the day and night? What preparations would you like to make?

Grindar looks to Sol, "I'll help you out my friend, though I think a bag of holding would be shade for you". Grindar will sharpen Cyrchwr Mawr, and gather his gear, he will then spend the rest of the day weaving or trying to anyway untrained craft weaving 5

"Alas, the quill need not be polished or sharpened, I have not more to prepare.

Xel'Aw instead spends his time helping establish a chain of command for the villagers in terms of construction, in terms of defense, and in terms of general management. Not commanding them, just writing down the natural orders that have been established and formalizing them to be sure everyone is one the same... page. (Diplomacy 17)

Haemir uses his dream powers to update Father Labeo back in Hook City.

Bigby successfully collects some provisions for the trip.

'Lil makes some quick preparations, then burns time by chatting up the colonists. She is clearly ready to be on the move.

Xel'Aw, with assistance from Caelwyn helps make sure that the colonists are organized for when the party is gone. They find that there are some natural roles that folks happily fall into, and thinks that things will be just fine, barring major calamity.

Grindar offers to help Sol carry his stuff, but suggests getting some magical aid in the future. Sol thanks him, and readies some spells for the journey.

Preparations made, the party has a last night of hopefully restful sleep. Dawn comes, and Thich is ready to go. He comments, "I can cannot help you pass through the grasses like the manfri, so this will be tough going. Let us arrange ourselves for trouble. It is sure to come over the next few weeks. You know your capabilities best, what should our marching order look like? Once you agree upon that, you set off into the grasses, and into the unknown. The colonists all have gathered to see you off, and wave both hopefully and maybe a little forlornly, as their greatest protectors disappear into the wild…

Caelwyn, while not a ranger, is fairly perceptive as well as heavily armored. He offers to guard the rear of the party and keep watch behind them. If another party member would rather do this, he is also happy to guard the spellcasters and/or more lightly armored members of the group.

He falls into line, wearing his armor and carrying his kit, sword, shield, spear, dagger, and masterwork longbow. As he casts his eyes toward the horizon he reaches up to touch the holy symbol around his neck. "Domi" he murmurs mostly to himself, "guard us and guide our steps throughout this journey."

'Lil keeps poor Caelwyn company in the rear guard. "Probably more dangerous back here than up front, really. Critters what hide in grass don't seem like kind to charge right at us."

She does her best to keep an eye out, but this darn grass is so high! (Perception 9)

Sol also falls into the middle of the group, neither being particularly perceptive or tough he figures he shouldn't get in the way of those that can physically fight better.

He speaks to Haemir while they walk.

"So, what was in that book that you read? It seems very interesting, anything you feel comfortable sharing?"

Xel'Aw falls in the middle, which is good because he isn't paying much attention. He looks about at the types of grass trying to recall their use rather than watching for threats and Sol occasionally bumping into him reminds him to continue walking.
