Scene 3: Steady the Surroundings


Worries and Arrival - DM Steve K

Worries start coming up when the heroes have time to think about it. How far to OddHolme, what does the Gate look like, can they stabilize the gate and do some Catacombs shopping before going to a plane of Rakshasa?

And how does one sneak about a plane full of Rakshasa who are all shape shifters and can detect thoughts? Are there any other creatures there? Are there Rakshasa protocols that the Tide can exploit? Or does an entire race of spirits that thumb their nose at any decency even have protocols?

Then there is Yrûl who doesn't have a Talisman or Will protection, or ...,

Maybe Gaffer is right: thinking ahead is overrated. One thing at a time, and the first is to get to OddHolme.

The Cloud Racer is unharmed by the Great Ranthoms, and the sails are soon set to catch the changed wind: once again the druidwood ship streaks across the Sargrasses! It is only another hour before the lookout in the crow's nest shouts: "Dome Ho!"

Thus and thus. Tommiknuckles and the crew ease off speed, adjust sail, and maneuver the Cloud Racer for another hour until the Captain has the 'Grass anchors thrown from the fore- and aft-castles, and the ship comes to a stop about a half mile from the unfinished dome. Surrounding OddHolme is a field of short and withered 'Grasses interspersed with many druidwood saplings: the Cloud Racer can't come closer without wrecking on the hard, scorched ground.

The place looks like a collection of about a dozen hovels underneath a damaged but partially repaired dome of Grass. From this distance, the heroes can see a small team climbing the outside of the dome, another couple of groups looking like they are herding some sort of animal among the stunted druidwood saplings, and other movement in the shade and shadows of the dome. (Yes, Yrûl, shadows!!)

Tommiknuckles comes over to where the Tide are gathering. "This is as far as I can get you, and I'll be leaving as soon as you off-board. I have a date in Zaran City I'm going to be late for, and that extra 2,000gp will just about cover my lateness penalty. Good luck!" He waits expectantly.

"You do have a few options for Snicket and Dabz," Desdichado explains to Yrul. "A permanent blessing from the Catacombs is one, I believe there are some potions or oils you can apply as well. If you stick really close to me, my natural aura will bless them as well - don't tell me you can't see how naturally holy I am," he adds with a wink, "of course the downside of sticking close to me usually means you're right next to the bad guys as well."

He also let's her know that harming the Maharaja is a separate issue. "The dragon we helped gave us special artifacts that even allow us to cause it harm. Without one, I don't know what you'd be able to do."

Heading off the ship, Desdichado thanks the captain for his assistance in getting to OddHolme. "Thanks, Captain! We're in a rush ourselves, so we won't keep you. May Domi watch over you all on your travels!"

Hmerrin dutifully pours out 2000 gp and hands it over.
"Our thanks, Captain. Safe travels."

With that, the fellow turns his attention to the dome.
{I suppose we could just ask. Surely a gate popping up around here where there wasn't one before would be noticed. }

He decides to go with the Walk Till Somebody Stops You approach, and heads for the dome.

Nira can't bless weapons exactly, but does have a few spells that can improve them in certain scenarios.

She does have a similar take on things as Danko. Tommiknuckles got a real deal with the party today.

With everyone heading off, Yrûi made a quick pirouette and curtsied to Tommiknuckles before skipping off to follow the others. She was filled with questions.

Why wouldn't Snicket and Dabz be able to stab the nasty Rakkies? They were very eager to do so and both were magical. Surely that was all that was necessary.

How many Rakkies were there? She could hide and hide well, but if they could detect her thinking....how could she hide that? Maybe she could just think shadowy thoughts!

And where was that wheelie-things that she was supposed to find? That might help.

Despite all this rumination Torryn skipped, pranced and danced along trailing colourful coloured ribbons as she did.

Gaffer doesn't much mind the money, they have already profited from the journey, and keeps his attention on Oddholme, trying to spot any reaction from the people at their ships arrival.

He shifts into a hawk and flies above the party until they are on the carpet, and moves forward.

The Tide leaves the Cloud Racer, some with some dark looks at Tommiknuckles about his lack of appreciation, but Hmerrin pays the man: a deal is a deal, and the Cloud Racer would not have been in that situation if he hadn't taken the heroes on the sailing path to OddHolme, so maybe it was all for the best.

Hmerrin is also a direct type (could we say headstrong? :) and uses the Walk Till Somebody Stops You approach, and the seven heroes head for the dome. As they do, the Cloud Racer pulls up anchors, and catches a breeze towards the gap in the Crystal Mountains on the southern horizon. A figure with huge orange sideburns waves from the aft-castle.

While everyone else walks (or Overland Flights real close to the ground), Gaffer forms into a hawk and flies slightly above the party. The heat is intense away from the ship, the druidwood saplings providing no benefit. It sure is a good thing the magnificent seven have endure elements or rose's temperature control: even with the magic, they are soon sweating hard.

Direct seems to work best. It would have been impossible to hide the arrival of the great Grass ship, and a deliberate walking towards the partially repaired dome doesn't look like raiders or bandits. The effect appears that the people seen are not stopping what they are doing or screaming or being hostile.

In 10 minutes of walking, the first person they approach appears to be a slow moving young human in light clothing and a wide straw hat with a lasso also made of some sort of 'Grass. About him are 20+ ... slugs. Each worm-like creature is about three feet long with toothless mouths and they each move among short blades of 'Grass, eating.

"Many Shadows. Bright work for walkers, and you don't weave like traders or foundlings or monks, so what's got you warped up?" Nira can tell with her Arcane Sight that the young man doesn't have anything magical about him; not even Endure Elements.

"Super dark, shadowy-shadows." Yrûi replied to the stranger with a broad grin. The heat and light made it difficult to smile. She felt the light was leeching all the colour from the world. "We're weaving our way to a wefty portal...thingy. I don't suppose you could shed a little shade on that?" She concluded optimistically.

The sweating and slow fellow seems to be as confused by much of what the heroes say as the other way around, standing idle for a bit with a blank face. Then he gives a small smile. ” Yeah, Super dark, shadowy-shadows. Helping is always shady, that’s what the monks say. These things? Light! They aren’t Ranthoms, they are Prairie Pigs, good eating.”

He takes a sip from a water bladder with a cunningly woven spout that lets not a drop more out than needed. ”You shuttlecocked to feed your reed or to have it cut? Food you can barter for, nobody starves here. But we don’t have no beater since old Galafar. Portals? Sounds like you bouncers are looking for the Vault. The best storyteller here is Dalakite. Lives in the hut closest to the ramp to the Vault.”

Nira doesn't understand a lot of what the fellow is saying. "What can you tell us of Dalakate? Are they likely to help outsiders like us?" She's already wondering what the party may have to trade for help. It just seems the way lately. Perhaps the treasures from the Ranthoms will be enough to buy information?

Seeing that others had already designated the offered guidance as being 'shady', Yrûl couldn't think of anything further to add. She already pushed the envelope of guesswork regarding the patois spoken here. So she smiled and skipped off with the others, hoping to find some relief from the light and the heat. She was quite sure that she'd have melted were it not for the magical protections accorded to her.

It looks like the patois barrier is mutual: the slow moving man is only catching the occasional word of the Tide, and doesn’t even seem to know what ‘shenanigans’ are! He just waves them towards the small village, and the lassoes a prairie pig that was moving too far from the herd.

Hut by ramp to vault. Right. The heroes walk towards town, and note that as they approach the half-dome, the temperature drops to only hot, not searing. All the huts seem to be made of woven Sargrass of various types, small outdoor fires in front of each one as people prepare the evening meal. Eyes glance up but show little interest as the heroes walk by. Some hits are outside the half-dome, but most are underneath.

Appraise auto pass: this is a hard-scrabble village, very hand-to-mouth living, but they don’t seem sad or down about it.

Once under the half-dome, it is cool enough, maybe only 15 degrees hotter than the pleasant Rattledam. Still comfortable without magical assistance. The heroes note that the intact part of the dome has two floors, a balcony extends the entire half-dome, and there are glimpses of openings that hint to interior rooms.

There is also a paved ramp without roof that goes downward that ends in a pile of debris.

Near the top of the sloping ramp is the hut closest to the ramp, and a half-elf woman with graying hair grilling what smells like steaks on the open fire.

Nira is curious what sort of steaks they would be. This doesn't seem like the sort of area for cattle. This land is probably filled with all sorts of unusual creatures, so who really knows what foods they might have to eat.

"Many shadows!" she calls out to the woman. That seems to be the common greeting.

Hmerrin takes off his helmet and wipes the sweat from his face. The half-elf lady leaps up and is at his side in an instant with a towel, wiping Hmerrin's hand, reaching to wipe his face. "Do NOT drop water on the ground!", she warns in alarm. "Sargrass bugs are attracted to water, and can strip all flesh from your bones in a minute!" She passes out bits of rag to all of them, and shows them a clay pot near the hut's door to place them in.

Crisis averted, she sits back down and responds to the Tide's various greetings. "Many Shadows", she replies slowly, unsmiling. "Foundlings are always welcome to my fire and hut. Please warp down, sit and have a meal, and we may speak of the weft and web." Nira, Ramirez, and Desdichado all notice that the half-elf notices that much of what she is saying is not understood. Still without smiling, she speaks again, tapping the bare earth beside her, and miming putting something in her mouth. "You are from outside of Sargrass, yes? Foundlings, yes? Lost or orphaned or escaped slaves? The 'Grass Ship dropped you off. I am Dalakite, I take care of Foundlings' first days in OddHolme. Come sit by my fire, eat, and we will talk."

The fire looks to be of twisted pieces of 'Grass that burns slowly, but hot. Through part pantomime, part repeating words, and part speaking slowly to remember what words outsiders would not understand, the Tide get Dalakite's story while having an evening meal. The steaks are slightly grassy, slightly salty, but cooked to perfection. They come with a basket of peeled and roasted tubers of various sizes, shapes, and color: some earthy, some sweet, but none of them are a carrot. There are also gourds with lids full of luke warm water to drink.

And it also appears to be a communal meal. There are no plates or cups. When a bit is right, Dalakite takes a small knife to slice off a piece of meat and a fork to pop it into her mouth. With a look at the heroes, she invites them to share the meal. In the 30 minutes it takes to eat, others come out of the hut or wander by to share food with the older half-elf or take a slice for themselves. Everyone seems to be all different races without anyone looking like there is a family resemblance.

Through the meal, Dalakite tells her story. She was once a part of a Pack, a tight group of friends, and they did adventures for a monk in Rattledam named Galafar. Galafar was a beater, an authority and also a bad man, and her pack often went up against another Pack, the BloodPack. Dalakite didn't care, she used to only want fame. But bad times happened, and much of her Pack were killed, including her twin sister. Dalakite realized the pursuit of her goal hurt people and the Sargrass. So when Galafar and Dalakite were exiled from Rattledam, they made their way to OddHolme, seeking the Bloodpack for redemption, but the BloodPack had already gone. Galafar and Dalakite stayed, part of their penance from past mis-deeds to welcome and shelter anyone who came. And now that Galafar is dead, she continues on, acting as the welcoming committee for the Foundling village of OddHolme, and exploring the nooks and crannies to learn what happened to the BloodPack.

She looks expectantly to hear the new-come heroes' stories.

"Oh, yes well...I'm Yrûi and I'm a dancer." The Surface Drow informed her excitedly, proclaiming her profession as if it were the best thing in the world. "Say, I don't suppose you know of a lost spinning wheel, do you? I'm supposed to find it. Oh, and thank you very much for your generous hospitality. That's super-shady with extra thick shadows." She was far from convinced that she'd got the expression correctly framed, but wasn't going to worry about it.

Gaffer perches on the roof of the hut and keeps an eye on the various villagers approaching. It strikes him as odd that the town seem unphased by a randomly appearing gate, and Vyrnix's specifically described the town, not even it's surroundings.

The half-elf woman's words affect Desdichado in a way he hasn't felt in a long time. Lost, orphaned, escaped slave...he'd never thought of himself as an orphan before, but in some way it is true. He begins telling Dalakite, and the Tide, a story he's only shared with a very few people in the Temple of Domi in Plateau City.

"Lost or orphaned. I suppose you could say that about me. Not, technically, I mean...well, I mean, my mom died when I was young, but my dad is still alive, or I suppose so anyway." The others hear an awkwardness in his speech that is unusual for him around the group he's been comfortable with for so long. "My dad was a well-enough off merchant. Did I lose him or did he lose me? I don't know...I found out one day that he'd been working with slavers who would raid our lands now and then - giving them intelligence in exchange for some of the profits, I guess. I didn't stick around long enough to find out once I knew. I left that day, in fact."

He looks around at the others. "That's how I took up the name 'Desdichado' - it means 'disinherited' in an obscure language I remember my tutor using. That's what I've gone by ever since." He stops for moment and says while looking down, "I'm Ferrin."

He suddenly looks up. "You all can keep calling me Dez, though," he laughs in his more familiar way.

With Dalakite's permission, Ramirez casts a tongues spell, to increase the communication that will be possible here. (He will cast it on her if she is willing, or on himself if she would not like the spell)

Dalakite, I must apologize, but I do not know much about the BloodPack. What I can tell you is that we did not wander here accidentally. We have come here on purpose, and traveled far in a short time. We are fighting against devils from another world, and the only way to get there is through a portal that must be nearby to Oddholme. We are hoping that someone here will know where it is, or at least where we can start looking for it.

Hmerrin is startled by the woman's reaction to his sweaty face.
He freezes, allowing her to apply the rag.
His expression changes as she explains her actions.

"Right. Good safety tip. No water on the ground."
The man is really not interested in seeing these Sargrass bugs.

Dalakite's tale results in a more startling one from Desdichado.
Hmerrin needs several moments to take that in.
In the end, he can only smile back. "Dez it is."

Dalakite wants stories.
Hmerrin gives her a few.
About a compound outside Dirt City where a race of shapeshifters kept people as livestock.
About a gaming hall where these same shapeshifters mentally dominated the clientele, stealing their coin and taking their lives.
About a group of miners forced to supply these shapeshifters with gems in exchange for the lives of their families.

"We have good information that about half a day ago, a gate to their world appeared here. In another half day it will be gone. We need to find it. We need to stop them. We need you to help us."

Yrûi listened intently. There was so much to learn it seemed; about the Tide as much as the land she now found herself in. In all honesty, she was not a fan. It was simply too hot and too bright. Why would anyone choose to stay here when there were other, friendlier places to be found?

Nira is now really on edge. She pays careful attention to the party, ready to jump in if someone is about to drop some food or drink on the ground "Is it just water? How long does it take the bugs to come?" She wants to know if it's an immediate thing, whether there would be enough time to clean up a little spill, and whether blood would have the same effect.

She still doesn't know what animal the meat has come from, and she's afraid to ask. She chews it carefully, and smiles to indicate her appreciation to Dalakite for sharing the meal.

The stories continue about the fire and meal. Dalakite accepts Ramirez' Tongues spell, which speeds up the conversation.

A ragged human girl brings out a birdcage and pulls out what the heroes were told was a blind Prairie Swallow, holding it up towards Gaffer. "Here, birdy, birdy, birdy. I haven't seen something like you before. Did the Tri-Saar make you?"

Hmerrin is thankful for the piece of advice about water and Sargrass Bugs, but it is Nira who is even more alarmed. Dalakite listens and provides that it is not immediate, and if people are able to move, they can get out of the area, but in the OddHolme village, it would certainly disrupt their meal and maybe get someone hurt. How fast depends on how close colonies or hibernating bugs are, but usually anywhere between 5 seconds and a minute. "Our ceremony for the dead is to lay the person on the ground and pour a full waterskin over them. 'The land, my life'."

Desdichado/Ferrin finally reveals his origin story to the shock of many of his friends, but they realize he is the same person as before. The story brings the team even closer.

Yrûl asks for a story of a spinning wheel around OddHolme, and Dalakite nods. "A member of the BloodPack was a Spellweaver, one of the very first the Manfri taught, and she was skilled in weaving fabric and 'Grasses as well. I have not found all of the personal rooms the BloodPack used, but the one for Tishe' is on the second level of OddHolme, and her spinning wheel is there still." Dalakite draws a map in the dirt that is easy for Yrûl to understand.
(Know History DC 15 Highlight to display spoiler: { Just a couple of years ago, there was a Tishe' Weaver (a Spellweaver!) who adventured and retired with a group in Cinnamon Valley, the Keepers. Some of the Tide may remember the retirement party in the Giggling Ghost.}

Gaffer thinks it odd a suddenly appearing gate hasn't phased the villagers, and Ramirez and Hmerrin delve again into the reasons The Tide is here. Dalakite is still unsmiling, but understanding seems to finally dawn in her green eyes. "Bright Sunbaked Noon! That eats Grass. You are no Foundlings or Bouncers, but Black Faced Weavers. Like the BloodPack, but you are the TidePack." What Dalakite says may not mean much to the heroes, but all the Foundlings around the fire sit up and take notice; they eye the 'TidePack' with new respect, but also start looking furtively around.

Dalakite explains, whispering: pointing first to the ramp into the ground, and then a head nod to the west.

"If you are looking for a portal or gate, I would tell you to look inside the Vault. It is said there were many gateways down there, and the BloodPack and ChaosPack fought demons from other planes down there. But it is so blocked from whatever happened, that all the years I have been here, I have been unable to get beyond the rock."

"But if you are looking for something that just sort of showed up less than a day ago, there wasn't a Grass Hut over there on the edge of OddHolme yesterday."


The Foundling villagers all clam up and soon find other tasks they need to do that take them away from the TidePack. Dalakite draws another map in the dirt, and then erases it before standing and announcing she is tired and needs to rest. The drawing was of OddHolme with an arrow pointing to the hut at AQ,10.

Nira is a little surprised. Well, very surprised actually. She hadn't known Dez - Ferrin - as long as the others so thought they must have already heard the story. For him to be sharing it now with the group feels like a very personal moment. She stays quiet as long as she can, not wanting to ruin it.

As to the matter at hand, the villagers don't seem very worried that a hut mysteriously appeared from nowhere. If they're not concerned, should the party be? If a building suddenly appeared in Dirt City she's sure it would cause a fuss.

The map in the dirt was a delight for Yrûl. Somehow she'd manged to get close, very close to her assigned task! All other considerations were rendered void. She really had no head for history. she glanced over at the newly arrived hut and wondered whether that would be their first point of enquiry or they go find the other 'Pack' stuff.

"That was very helpful...ly shady." Yrûl replied with a grateful smile. Good news was always welcome. Plus, it was good to be in the company of so many that seemed to know exactly what to do or say. That had never really been her forte: smiling and dancing! Those she could do.

Desdichado finds a lot of surprise and acceptance. Gaffer thinks it is truly a TidePack now.

Should we be checking for Rakshasa amongst the villagers? Ramirez thinks its unlikely for a daily moving Gate to have Rakshasa everywhere, but Dez asks Dalakite. All he gets in return is an unsmiling look and she goes into her own hut. Nira, Desdichado, and Ramirez (who have phenom Sense Motives), all get the hunch that, far from being unconcerned, the villagers are SO concerned as to be cowed.

Yrûl loves the map, so close to her mission! Yet she looks to the TidePack and stays with them on which mission to finish first.

As the harsh Sargrass sun blazes towards the horizon, Desdichado, Gaffer, Hmerrin, Ramirez, and Danko all walk towards the hut Dalakite pointed out, and Nira and Yrûl follow along. Danko has a wand in his hand but hasn't cast his spells yet...

The TidePack doesn't get far beyond the other side of the ramp, when Nira makes a discovery. The small elf girl has Permanent Arcane Sight, and all during their visit to OddHolme, she has not seen any magical auras at all. Now, the hut they are going to is blazing with multiple overwhelming level auras: abjuration, conjuration, divination, transmutation!

Desdichado thinks for a moment. The TidePack is likely going to need to be beyond prepared before going into that hut - protective spells up, talismans worn, and so on. Also, in the group's rush to get to the hut, he also realizes that they may be forgetting a need Yrul has to get her spinning wheel. She was told to get it, the group still has time before the portal moves (assuming that hut is the portal), and it may help her feel more a part of the team if her needs are remembered.

He puts it to her and the others "Yrul, before we enter the hut, would you like to check on Tishe's spinning wheel on the upper level? Once we enter that portal who knows what will happen?"

TidePack agree that they should get the Spinning Wheel, then prep their defenses, and then go to the hut that NIra says is blazing with magical auras. The elf wonders that there isn't any illusion aura, but then she is able to see it, and Necromancy and Evocation. Nira has to conclude that the auras are so powerful that the auras are interfering with being able to be detected. Gaffer's speculations don't seem to have an answer without experimentation.

Going towards the inside of OddHolme, the heroes see the ramp only goes down, but the village has ropes, ladders, and one pulley set up to make it easy to get to the second floor. Here, under the dome, it is cool (well, it's 80F, which is positively frigid compared to outside) and shadows abound. The TidePack with Yrûl in the lead follow their memory of Dalakite's map along the inner balcony until they get about a third of the way around and finds a woven Grass door as strong as thick wood.

It is unlocked.

The heroes come into a pleasantly lit room (though it is still cool and still has shadowy areas) that looks like it hasn't had traffic for years. The light comes from a window to the outside of the Dome that is covered with a weave of transparent Grass. There appear to be remnants of woven rugs, a low table, and woven sit-upons: all made of various patterns of Grass. Pegs by the door probably would have once held a cloak, a satchel, or other items of personal nature. In one corner is a couple of clay amphora, leaning upright against the wall, and another one broken on the floor.

And dominating the room near the window is a Medium spinning wheel (20 lbs) and Large loom (50 lbs). It appears there is a half-finished tapestry of Grass threads on the loom, the shuttlecock placed among a couple of threads so it wouldn't fall out.

There are also two doorways with the remnants of beaded curtains that look to go into other, darker rooms.

The heroes contemplate the disused room, the Medium spinning wheel, the Large loom with a half-finished tapestry, the two doors into darkness, the window to the Sargrass and the evening glow of the sun turning the sky orangish-red.

Yrûl doesn't see any traps, and giving is a shove proves that the spinning wheel is easy to move. The main problem is that the spinning wheel is Medium-sized and bulky. How is she or her new friends going to keep it safe while traveling?

"Oh." Yrûl stopped and looked around. She turned and faced Dedichado.

"I never thought of it before." She looked very pleased despite the current dilemma, but then she often looked pleased. "I was in Hook City and had been a little bit too good at helping the authorities in apprehending some thieves; all part of a criminal gang. It was an influential group with lots of connections - many of which weren't very interested in my dancing; at least, not in this life. This strange old weaver told me that I needed to get out of town and that my future was linked to the spinning wheel in OddHolme - which was wierd because I'd never heard of the place. BUT, here's the thing guys - I was never told specifically that I had to return it - just find it. And I did! here it is. Ta-daaa!" The colourful dancer smiled in delight.

"Thanks everyone. I think it'll be safe enough here for now. let's go do the hut-thingy. I'm feeling all-inspired and stuff like that. isn't it great?" She looked back at the spinning wheel as if it were the greatest treasure horde ever. She was all set to leave, but abruptly changed her mind.

"Seeing as how we've come all this way, I'd better take a quick look around." And she did, slipping through the shadows with practiced ease she checked out the remaining spaces.

Desdichado asks a pertinent question which lets Yrûl provide some background. It makes sense that it is the Old Weaver from Hook City who is missing the spinning wheel. After all, while Dalakite of OddHolme knows it is here, how many people have asked her? She is in a hardscrabble village whose location is only known by a few GrassShip captains, in an inhospitable and isolated land that the TidePack could only find by using a Greater Teleport spell in the first place.

Danko takes it easy, standing beside the two corked amphora as Yrûl and Ramirez check the other two rooms. They prove to be a sleeping chamber and what could have possibly been a storage area. The sleeping chamber has woven Grass mats and pillows with a few more pegs for worldly possessions. The other room is empty.

Gaffer takes a closer look at the half-finished Tapestry. It looks like a portrait, an adventuring group stands together and looks out from the warp and weft. A human holding a staff sprouting new growth. A fierce-looking half-orc with the symbol of Gargul stands next to a short-haired, sandy blonde man with another symbol: Domi. A colorful gnome girl that looks like the one the Tide met in the Great Library: Flea! Two more humans, one in a short monk's robe and the other with a bow and a confident, lazy smile. And only half-done, a large, armored minotaur towers over a very short human woman. Gaffer can notice several of the team wear WLA badges. A scroll caption below reads: "Talki fresal, dondit likki"

Nira considers dismantling the spinning wheel, while Hmerrin thinks that they can just come back for it. Yrûl seems happy enough just to find it and leave it where it is at. Everyone begins to think about getting ready to return to the unassuming hut with overpowering magical auras.

"We might as well talk some strategy while we're here. I don't want to walk into the hut without any protections, but given all the auras that Nira sees on it, I have no doubt there's some kind of nasty trap or harmful magic if we try to walk in. Yrûl decides to leave the spinning wheel here until the team is able to come back, but then transport it to the old weaver. She deserves the wheel.

TidePack make their plans in the second-floor former living room of an adventurer from a past generation while waiting until nightfall. Everyone dons their amulets and removes any magical devices from around their necks. Danko uses his Magic Circle vs Evil wand three times, each casting good for 50 minutes.
Des wants Yrûl to stay close to him, but the plan calls for the shadow dancer to go ahead of everyone...

Ten minutes later, the blazing Sargrass sun is behind the horizon, and purplish twilight's gloom settles. It takes 10 more minutes for the team to move from the spinning wheel room back to where Nira first saw the overpowering auras coming from the hut that was pointed out to the team. They do note with the sun down, the air has cooled to a mere 120F and the wind has also died down. The heroes can see well enough in the dim light that the hut is still there.

Nira still sees it blazing with a kaleidescope of overpowering magical auras.

"Why are you removing necklaces?" Asked Yrûl. She had a headband, a necklace and a choker! She didn't ant to remove them though, they were important. "I can keep these on, can't I?" She queried with evident concern. She didn't have much magic, not really; so wasn't happy to relinquish any of it.

Other then her few magical items, there were no particular arrangements that she needed to make. She'd take things slowly and use her ability to cleave to the shadows. When ready she'll carefully approach the hut and seek to determine the presence of any traps, magical or otherwise.

Yrûl pauses for the TidePack, then approaches the hut. With the pause, the heroes have time for more than one round of actions.

Desdichado tries to allay Yrûl's concerns about the necklaces.

Gaffer casts a self-spell on himself, then conjures a Small Earth Elemental in front of the door.

Hmerrin invokes his tattoo of Delay Poison, then drinks a Barkskin potion. He moves when Yrûl moves trying to see from a different angle.

Ramirez casts a spell on himself and takes a deep breath: here we go.

Nira casts a greater invisibility spell, activates her Spell Turning, and provides magical Guide for her friends. She spreads out, recalling a past fight that started badly.

Danko uses his wands, even to give Yrûl and himself protection.

Yrûl and Hmerrin move closer, and Gaffer’s small earth elemental appears. In the gloaming, Yrûl and Hmerrin can see the hut is there, but only has an illusion of being made of Grasses. A rustic hut stands here, its timber walls hung with bundles of drying herbs and etched with eerie symbols.

With a loud “SQUAUKK!!”, the door becomes the beak of a chicken. The hut rouses. From beneath its splintering wooden porch extends a pair of legs, like those of a fifteen-foot-tall chicken with gigantic talons caked in dried mud but sharp as razors! The heroes can see that the legs had been hidden under the ground like a chicken sitting on a nest until…

”BUK, BUKKAAW!! A cloud of rolling smoke, shot through with white-hot embers, engulfs Yrûl, obscuring all sight and causing 22 damage! (Reflex DC 25 for half). Desdichado, Ramirez, Danko, and Gaffer can no longer see the Hut because the Cloud is in the way. Yrul can't see anything at all.

There were shadows. There was dim light. Yrûl slipped through the roiling smoke like a shadow. None of the hot embers touched her, nor did the smoke trouble her vision. (Reflex: 39 and Improved Evasion: no damage.) She stepped into the shadows and instantly out to appear on top of the hut's roof! Snicket and Dabz were out, eager and ready to show Yrûl what they could do.

DM SteveK OOC: I'm going to rule that Yrul drew her two weapons as part of her Move Action and then used her Shadow Jump supernatural ability at her Standard Action.
Yrul has a base attack of +1 or better and has the 2-weapon feat. She can normally draw both weapons as part of a move action. However, Shadow Jump is a standard action to use and is like Dimension Door, which includes that there is no more actions possible after DD. So Yrul had to draw weapons first to get a full attack possibility next round.

"Well huh" Of all the things Nira thought would happen, this wasn't it. A portal disguised as a hut, maybe some sort of camouflaged stronghold, maybe a horde of raks running from the hut. All of these things seemed possible. Chicken hut didn't even make the list.

"Maybe take out the legs so it can't move about?"

Bloodwitches have terribly few spells that are effective against constructs. Nira goes to an old favorite but needs to get slightly closer to be in range

A chicken hut? Ramirez wonders... (kn arcana = 24) Well, I'm not sure what it is, but the magic chicken hut sure seems hostile.

Ramirez starts a bardsong of inspiration. Even if the team is caught in the smoke they can benefit. Then he gets out his bow.

Yrûl slips unhurt through the roiling smoke, stepping into darkness, and appearing on top of the hut's roof with Snicket and Dabz out!

Hmerrin’s axes appear in hand as the fighter rushes to engage. He strikes true, but the Hut shrugs off some of the damage. Damage Resistance!

Desdichado calls upon Domi's aid, his greataxe is covered in a faint glow as he makes his way around the hot vapours.

Danko moves a step north, then needs another couple of steps to target the Chicken Hut. (ooc: move to AD,14. Line of sight for spells is a straight line from the middle of caster and target squares.) And then a thin green ray streaks from his outstretched finger… and fizzles as it strikes the Hut! Those who know Arcana realize it has Spell Resistance!

Nira, worried about witches vs constructs, maneuvers and goes to an old favorite, Grease, but it stays on its feet! What’s more, she can tell the Hut has Freedom of Movement so is not under the influence of any magic that impedes movement.

Ramirez starts a bardsong of inspiration, then gets out his bow. The inspiration doesn’t stack with all of his heroism magic, but it does help in other ways.

Gaffer concludes that is how it changes location every day, then moves for a vantage point and casts Flamestrike, which pierces the constructs spell resistance, but the Chicken Hut is quick and dances nimbly out of the way! It has Evasion! His small earth elemental, being told to open the door, can’t reach and so continues to stand there.

The Chicken Hut, unimpeded by the Grease spell, takes a nimble step and kicks at the small earth elemental, missing! (AC 40, 22 dam, Concealment 20% for Dim Light) and Hmerrin! Then the door/beak smashes down, coming up with Hmerrin clutched in its beak! (AC 56, 52, Dam 15 plus grab, 17 plus grab, conceal 98,32). In a trice, Hmerrin is swallowed by the Hut! (Fast Swallow). The other Tide heroes can’t hear Hmerrin through the telepathic bond! (Nira and Ramirez Know Arcana autopass: he must be somewhere not on the Wold!)

Hmerrin only Highlight to display spoiler: { Hmerrin appears to be in a 5 foot space made of wood, but it is pitching and warping about! What's worse, he feels his magical protections did not make the transition: he loses his Protection v Evil, Magic Circle, Barkskin, and Delay Poison!}

Yrul realizes she isn't on a building that is moving, but a construct that is more like an exotic mount! She needs to 'stay in the saddle' in order to keep on top of the house each round, but with no ranks in Ride, she can't succeed in a DC check more than 10 (Ride Check DC15 to 'stay in saddle' with exotic mount, no saddle). The drow is flung off for 7 damage and lands prone at AP,8. (no acrobatics check because not a deliberate fall)

The Incendiary Cloud billows forward, engulfing Ramirez who was not quick enough to get out of its way! (27 heat damage, (Reflex DC 25 for half) It continues to move towards the Grass huts of OddHolme!!

Nira only Highlight to display spoiler: {the elf girl sees an emaciated and old human woman Dim Door at AO,21. She looks like a corpse except for the vitality and the intelligence blazing from her eyes. Nira can see her magical auras include Invisibility, Shield of Faith, Resist Energy, Stoneskin, Deathward, and Contingency. }

She then eyes the newcomer "And we've also got a new person on the field. There's an invisible old woman coming up from the south east. I'm not sure if she's friend or foe, but she has a lot of magical defences up"

Nira is a little disappointed her grease spell didn't have the effect she was hoping for, but at least she's learnt a little more about the house. With not much more she can try against it, she opts to buff the party instead.

The elemental taking focus from the Hut is about as much as Gaffer could ask for from it but he hasn't the attention to spare as it fades.

Nira's warning off an old woman appearing is definitely cause for concern and Gaffer calls out "If this is your property, please excuse us, we didn't realise..." and suddenly there is a bronze dragon beside them. That was unexpected.

Oh hell. Gaffer levels a pointed finger at the hut and pulses out a black beam towards it's center.

Yrûl cautiously rolls to her feet. (ooc: I don’t see where a full round stand from prone doesn’t provoke, only standing as a move action does. But it is creative and a loss of an action. Works for me!)

Desdichado moves forward, stopping nearby the elemental and grease trap just before he reaches the Chicken Hut. He is still too close. A razor talon draws blood as the paladin crosses a threatened area. (AC43, Miss88, Dam16)

Hmerrin reverts to his baser instincts. Axes flash and he smashes the door, breaking it open, and dropping to the ground! (Controlled Fall; Acrobatics DC 15 for Hmerrin to land on his feet)

Nira tells the Tide of additional problems, and buffs her friends with a Haste spell.

Ramirez takes the brunt of the incendiary cloud. He continues his bardsong, but can’t shoot any arrows because he is surrounded by cloud that he can’t see through.

Danko transforms into a large bronze dragon! Not our Hemmi!

Gaffer gets a whole bunch of surprises all at once. Chicken Hut missed his elemental, a bronze dragon is standing beside him, and Nira calls out on an approaching old lady… "If this is your property, please excuse us, we didn't realise..." Oh, Koshe-Marr… The druid casts Finger of Death at the Hut. It passes spell resistance, but has no effect. (Know Arcana DC 15; Nira and Ramirez autopass. Finger of Death is a death effect spell, and Constructs are immune.)

The Dancing Hut tries to squauk, but Hmerrin smashed in its beak while getting out. ”—AAUUKK”, and even as the heroes watch, the Hut begins to heal itself! The door is worse for wear, but it is there again, and the board that Hmerrin smashed knits back together.

This time, the Hut only reaches out a leg and touches Yrûl, who has an uncontrollable urge to… DANCE!! (Will DC 25 or Irrisitable Dance. Take no action for 5 rounds, -4 AC, -10 Reflex saves)

The incendiary cloud continues to move past Ramirez and into an OddHolme hut. The cinders spark and the hut is soon engulfed in flames, the villagers inside running out of the door which, thankfully, isn’t in the cloud!

Nira can see and the others can hear the old woman screech. ”Yes, mine! Yolpova found it, found its secrets. Bathed in sickly green flames, an insubstantial specter of a beautiful young woman floats just off the ground between Yolpova and Danko, Ramirez, and Gaffer.

Things weren't looking good. So much was happening. It was difficult to take it all in. What the group needed was someone to lift their spirits! This was no time to despair. Nira tries to refocus the Tide on the invisible woman who calls herself Yolpova and casts Greater Dispel Magic. Both the green ghost and the rag doll vanish! She then casts a Quickened Glitterdust on Yolpova! She isn’t blinded, but now her outline glitters and sparkles!

Yrûl dances. The spell normally makes targets conduct an uncontrollable shuffle, but the surface drow is a professional: she makes even the compulsion look effortless!

Desdichado has a pithy paladin remark and attacks the Hut. He finds that Vyrnix’ talismans do not work in the Wold. The ability to bypass another’s DR must only be on the Rakshasa home plane. He also learns that the Hut is not evil. Three attacks make it past the concealment of gloaming.

Danko the Bronze shrugs off the the insects and takes flight. He doesn’t have to use his breath weapon because the Wytchfire blinks out bare seconds before.

Gaffer is mad at himself, but not distracted as he runs from the centipedes and then calls another Flamestrike! He is able to incinerate a part of the wasp and centipede swarms. ”We don't want the hut! We're just here for the portal you witch!"

Hmerrin lands nicely, but doesn’t get the effects of the Haste spell (instantaneous effect from the round Hmerrin was in another plane) "What woman?" Hmerrin calls out, attacking the Chicken Hut again, and striking 3 times in the dim concealment!

Ramirez moves away from the swarms. He can’t see the invisible woman, so shoots at the Chicken Hut, hitting once in the dim concealment.

The Dancing Hut and its beak/door heals some, and kicks out at Desdichado and Hmerrin! Desdichado is clawed, grabbed, and popped into its beak (17 damage)! Hmerrin is clawed (19 dam), grabbed, stabbed by the beak (18 dam), and THEN popped into its beak/door!! Hmerrin and Desdichado only Highlight to display spoiler: { The two heroes find themselves inside a small wooden room that is heaving and warping madly!}

The incendiary cloud continues to into OddHolme, leaving one hut aflame. Curiously, the dome doesn’t even smoke...

”Liars! Thieves! It is Mine!! You can’t have it!” The old woman glares through the glitter at Nira. ”You hurt my babies! You see my defenses!! You are dangerous!!! But not ANYMORE!!!!” Nira sees what is happening: the Mother of All Curses! (Nira, roll three Will DC 33. If any single Will save fails, Nira turns into a frog and feather falls to the ground, convulsing.) Nira only Highlight to display spoiler: { Nira is affected by Trap the Soul, Baleful Polymorph (Frog), and Suffocation}. Yolpova is now visible even without the Glitterdust.

The multiple swarms of centipedes move towards the nearest living thing, and get on Ramirez again! He takes 15 damage and must save Fort DC 13 or be distracted AND another save Fort DC 13 or be poisoned!

Yrul's slippery mind sought to escape the effects of the dance, but the compulsion was too strong and she continued to dance.

"Charming little place". Desdichado continues to attack, but discovers the Haste magic isn’t working: when Dez popped into the extradimensional space, the spell didn’t translate.

"Oh, there she is…Aaaaand we're inside the Chicken again.” Hmerrin chops wood along with his paladin friend. Once again, he succeeds in smashing open the door, which dumps Desdichado and Hmerrin on the ground below. (Controlled Fall; Acrobatics DC 15 for Hmerrin and Desdichado to land on their feet)

Both Hmerrin and Desdichado do not have any active spells affecting them.

Ramirez moves again to get out of the swarms(move to AM14), then casts a cone of blasting sound spell at the swarms! He succeeds to get all but a small part of the wasp swarm in the area of effect, and that is not large enough to keep acting like a swarm: both swarms are gone! What is also in the cone are two of the OddHolme huts (which are flattened) and Danko! (Danko FortDC19 for half(and not be stunned) damage: 76)

Fortuitously, the hut on fire was one of the huts and the flames go out.

Danko, still in dragon form, is concerned and casts finger of death at Yolpova! Turns out she doesn’t have any spell resistance, but she shrugs off the worst of the effects.

Nira momentarily feels the curses bite, feeling like she becomes a soulless, choking frog, but her preparations succeed in saving the elf girl! The Trap the Soul is turned on Yolpova (who saves), Nira wills the Baleful Polymorph away, and, with a little Good Fortune, she succeeds to not succumb to the Suffocation! (ooc: DM says that because of the back-and-forth conversation and the time zone difference between Baltimore and Melbourne, Nira can act last round and this round in her next post.)

Ramirez tries one more diplomacy, ”All we want to do is use the portal.” and he makes preparations. Then he casts a Silence spell, and waits for her response. Since Yolpova has no weapons in her hand and doesn’t have Unarmed feat, there is no AOO!

(Ramirez takes 13 damage and finds himself, like the paladin and fighter before him, in a wildly warping small wooden room, and all his active spells are gone!)

The incendiary cloud seems stuck in the dome of OddHolme, unable to move forward and unable to damage the dome.

Yolpova smiles crazily. ”Mine! I command the Hut, I command the Portals, you can’t have the secrets!” And the Witch casts a Chain Lightning spell that catches Desdichado, Hmerrin, Yrul, and the elemental! (Desdichado takes 76 damage Reflex Dc 30 for half. Hmerrin, and the small elemental take 76 damage Reflex DC 28 for half. Yrul, dancing and improved evasion, has a Reflex DC 38 for none) A Quickened Dispel Magic ends the Reverse Gravity, and she lands on her feet like a cat.

Well, I was not expecting to be chicken feed today. Ramirez looks around the room. He guesses Hmerrin chopped his way out, but that might not be an option for the bard.

Yrûl dances, there simply wasn't time for anything else! Yowch!

Nira tries to focus the team on Yolpova, and casts a Quickened Dispel Magic which succeeds in freeing Yrûl from the Irresistible Dance!

Hmerrin dodges, sheathes his axes, and plans to do some spell-disrupting...

Danko has had enough of Witchypoo as well, and tries to disintegrate Yolpova. She barely saves, and takes some damage.

Desdichado misses his AOO and takes the full brunt of the lightning. A swift heal, a staggering rush, a giant chicken talon slashing the approaching paladin (19 damage), and Dez scratches the Hut.

Gaffer hits the Hut and Yolpova with another Flamestrike! The Witch dodges some, and her Resist Energy (fire) takes some more, but half the remaining is divine, not fire damage! The Hut also dodges and takes damage.

Gaffer’s elemental explodes in the Chain Lightning and returns to dust.

Ramirez looks around the wildly warping room. It is completely bare except for the one, much battered door.

The dance ended and instantly the fatigue set in. Yrûl was shocked at how heavy everything felt. Luckily she carried so very little that she needed to drop nothing to move, particularly when all the movement she needed to take was but one step.

She stepped into the shadows and out behind the witch, cleaving to the shadows. (Stealth: 53)

Yrûl has taken a standard action in shadow stepping. Am I correct in thinking that precludes any attacks? If such is the case, the plan is to make a full attack on the witch - from the shadows before she again act. To be honest though, I don't expect it will work as precisely NOTHING has so far. .... except for the stealth roll, that's worked.

The fall damage and the kick from the chicken really take it out of Desdichado. But with one swift heal he is able to exactly cancel the damage. Then, the witch casts a spell...

Feeling drained, he sends to the others, I've got some spells that can help with this exhaustion, but they take some time to cast. Between that and laying on hands I can have some of us back in fighting shape, but I'd need a break in the action.

He tries to attack the chicken house anyway.

With the Witch at least delayed, Gaffer tries to bring out reinforcements for the Hut instead. Though he is mostly worried about everything they are meant to do after this battle, this is just the warm up.
