A new day dawns- DM Dan K

Watches are set and the hours of the wolf are soon upon the party.
Hmerrin and Des take up positions and find themselves plagued by shadows, blacker than black, that seem to flicker about unseen. The ancient creak of wood, somewhere in the beyond of Culverwood and the hackle raising sensation of the very land itself, scrutinizing the pair of warriors
Gaffer and Nira are woken after what seems like only moments upon closing their eyes to take their turn, but other than fatigue, no opponents reveal themselves. The wood about seems calmed, almost peaceful
Ramirez and Danko find their watch far more similar to the first pair. The early twilight hours at the edge of the Culverwood are unnerving at best. A flutter of feathers high above as the others are waking as something quite large takes flight shakes an upper branch, though no debris falls.
Finally it is full daylight, though the spell casters all need a few more hours of rest before they can begin preparing spells.
Gaffer opens his eyes and finds a pear, an apple and a small twig of mulberries just next to his bedroll

All are ready before midday to move in whatever direction the party decides

fatigue mentioned above was purely descriptive and not game based

Hmerrin slowly rises to his feet, stretching and twisting about to get the kinks out of his muscles.

"There's way too many critters out here," he complains. "Tonight might be in an inn, Rakas or no Rakas."

The fighter sets about oiling and sharpening blades, waiting for the spellcasters to do their thing.

"Going underground into that tunnel," he reminds them.
"No telling where that leads."

Once everyone is ready, he leads the Tide back to the Nymph, and the unexplored shaft.

Gaffer, it seems as though the forest liked your message. Ramirez snacks on some rations as the group walks back to town. Camping out is relaxing, but he agrees with Hmerrin that an Inn would be nice. As they walk, his cloak shifts to a light breezy yellow, as if soaking up the morning sun.

Gaffer wakes up well rested and he makes sure to thank they forest for it's bounty as he prepares his spells for the day and takes an eager bite from the pear as they set off, sharing the apple and mulberries to the others.

"Nothing quite like a perfectly ripe pear." He grins, feeling the negativity of the previous fading away as he eats.

Once back in the tunnel, memories quickly surface of the last, not so long ago, time he was underground and he quietly prays for a more peaceful journey this time.

Nira spends some time casting her usual preparatory spells. She casts a Tishe's Weave Elements spell and weaves the air itself into 6 vests which she hands around the group. "Here. These will help protect you from attack".

She graciously accepts one of the apples from Gaffer. Nira rubs it against her airy vest to clean it a little and then chomps into it. With food in her belly she's feeling a little better about things and follows along with the group back to the Nymph.

The tide returns to town and makes their way to the Nymph. It is evident by the faces of many that you pass, that the events of the previous night have begun to circulate. No harsh looks are cast at the party however, so it would appear The Watch has been able to keep the details obscured at least. The faces show concern, sadness and a hint of fear. Understandable to be sure, but again, nothing directed to the group.

At The Nymph you find a different set of elven guard from The Watch who nod and step aside allowing you to enter and at this pint a few bystanders' eyes widen slightly. Inside is still as you left it and you arrive at the tunnel. Light sources are struck and the group proceeds side by side with Hmerrin and Des leading. The tunnel heads in a straight path, to anyone's ability to tell and after nearly an hour, it ends in a small room with a single exit, bolted heavily from your side.

No traps and easily opened, the door reveals a room in what seems to be a tool shed or perhaps a barn. As you enter the room, you notice from this side, the door is concealed to appear to be a tool hanging wall. there is no one about and the party finds themselves in what looks like a seasonal camp with 3 buildings. A barn for 4 large animals, a small bunkhouse and a smoke house. A mound of vegatational refuse and other unsavory looking debris forms a mound be the barn which extends a natural hills side to come all the way up to the first structure you exited from. The camp looks to be abandoned.

You are about 3 miles from Waypoint to the northwest of the town. Further west, about a 100 yards through light trees along a trail is a main north south road that would take you to Kharri, north, or to Waypoint, south. The tunnel seems to be a smuggling run

"Quite a setup they've got here," says Desdichado. "It makes me wonder how many secret tunnels like this there might be around here with no one even knowing what's happening around them."

"I wonder where the best place to find out more on these gnomes is. Should we head on up to Kharri?"

Hmerrin regretfully returns the woven vest to Nira.
"It's blocking my amulet," he explains.

The Tide go to Waypoint, and the Nymph, and the tunnel, and the end of the tunnel.

"Hmph," he remarks, looking around.

"Well, let's give the place a quick once-over, just in case someone left something interesting. Then, yeah, on to Kharri, I guess."

The young fighter strides over to the bunkhouse, and almost opens the door, but stops himself.
"Oh resident rogue," he sing songs. "Wanna break into a building?"

Having prepare the spell and aware they are about to go on the open road, Gaffer moves to the tunnel exit and casts Stone Tell, resting his palm against the tunnel wall and allowing it's voice to fill his mind.

"Erm. Hello. I hope you don't mind me speaking to you. We are trying to follow some bad people who have been travelling through this tunnel before us. I was wondering if you might be able to tell me anything about them, any ways you can identify them, and what they do in this building at the exit to the tunnel? Also, is there anything I can do for you?"

Having never spoke to stone, rock or earth before, Gaffer is not sure what to expect, can stone see as earth elementals do? or are his questions of no use or interest, he listens intently to the walls reply.

The Tide split up and move about the small camp looking for, something. The camp has not been used in some time, but is not overgrown. It is set up to appear to be a trapper or small hunting camp, but other than the bare bones of such, there is nothing here.
Gaffer casts a spell and asks the worked stone of the tunnel about those who have travelled it before them. The passage is often trod by many and the stones describe them in detail. Elf, human, both male and female and always in one direction, from The Nymph. The stone does not name the building, just the direction And once, just once in the stone's memory, a gnome. The stones describe your memory of the disguised Kumar, Nitish and 4 other Rakashsa that you recently fought and slew in the battle. It also describes 2 others, from even before the gnome. A powerful built human, like Des but without armor and female, with golden eyes. The other was a tall and gaunt human male. They spoke of agreeing the location would do well and that with the contract in place the others could be brought in to begin.

There is nothing else to be learned. Does the party head towards Kharri, capital of The Emerald Kingdom or towards Kurri looking for the gnome clan of Gemsmith

Gaffer is more than happy to take to the skies as a hawk once more, even though Culverwood is a much finer place to walk than most, he would always rather have wind beneath his wings than earth beneath his boots.

He keeps as keen an eye out as best he can across their journey. Any signs of off shoot trails or camps he will fly down to signal to the group.

Freeing the gnomes from slavery does sound appealing. And they may have some useful information about our adversaries before we confront them at Kharri. I agree we should provide an update to Ja'Jolla. Any volunteers?

Telling Ja'Jolla is a good thought and Gaffer offers to fly back into town and let the guard know before catching up to the others, as long as they are on the road he thinks he should be able to find and catch up to them.

The group heads down the slightly overgrown game trail to connect to the main north south road while Gaffer takes to the air and flies swiftly back to Waypoint and the Constables building. The main group turns south where the road will take them to Trade Road which runs east all the way to Plateau City and to Blackbird Lake to the west.

Gaffer lands nearby and enters to meet Ja'Jolla and in relative short order is able to do so. The Commander of the Watch accepts the information and informs Gaffer that the investigation is currently speaking to the witnesses. He expects the process to take at least a week. Interactions with the dead can be straining. He'll be in touch.

Gaffer exits and finds the group travelling west towards Kouri in the late afternoon. Having gotten a relative late start and with the side trip down the tunnel, the group is a good 5 hours from Kouri. As Gaffer comes in, he spies a small caravan of perhaps 3 wagons about 2 miles further to the west setting up camp themselves.

Does the group want to continue, pull up here or push to Kouri?

the group decides to continue forwards and meet up with the small wagon group ahead of them. Gaffer flies on ahead to see if there is something he can learn about their future camping buddies.

Gaffer passes overhead and scout out 10 folks about the 3 wagons, which are pulled off to the side of Trade Road in a straight line, traveling towards Kouri. A collection of 8 horses is nearby with 2 of the 10 tending to them. A pair of fires are being started, one at either end of the wagon line and a cooking fire already has several large pans and suspended pots heating up with food. The make up of the travelers is mixed races, 4 elves, 3 humans, 2 halflings and a gnome. the latter three seem to be in charge of food at the cooking fire. The sharp eyed Gaffer notes all in the party are well armed with a main weapon, side weapon and either a crossbow or longbow and wear armor.

The party approaches and 4 of them, a pair of elves and humans quickly move to the rear of the train and take up covered positions, weapons at the ready. A gnome walks out into the road and holds up a hand
"Well met travelers of the Trade Road. I am Simone Bumblebottom. If your aim is a warm fire, good food..."

A voice cries out from further back, "Excellent!

The gnome sighs, "EXCELLENT food, and company. You are most welcome. If not, you would do well to part from here."

Gaffer Highlight to display spoiler: {Gaff saw the gnome move from the cooking fire to a spot under a wagon and then a second gnome simply appeared and walked out on the road}

A tingle moves across all in the party and you know you are standing within a Zone of Truth

The group is welcomed after answering DM assumes you are polite truthful and nice and shown to some camp chairs by the cooking fire.

Gaffer flies down, making sure he is visible while shifting back to normal.

"Hello! I'm Gaffer, with the group, thank you for welcoming us. How have your travels been?"

[OOC: I am assuming the gnome reveals back out of their spot once the greetings have passed, otherwise he will find an opportunity to quietly let Nira know what he saw.]

He takes a seat near the cooking fire, eagerly awaiting the excellent food and enjoys the new faces and company.

Before resting, Gaffer takes some time to observe their surroundings, (Nature: 29) if the weather looks like it will rain or storm during their rest, he will take the time to cast Control Weather and clear the skies as best he can.

The group settles in and are welcomed all around by Simone and her caravan
Des gets some basic information Plateau City, nothing much. The group has been out for a few months. They do this each year from mid spring to early autumn where the route will wide them back to Plateau City for the winter.
Gaffer clears out the weather for a simply magnificent night under the stars and gets more than a few glances at the display of magical power.
The food is all it was advertised and more and the halflings, who cooked it, pry for as many compliments as they can get
Simone never reveals her precaution and so at an opportune moment, Gaffer fills Nira in on the magical display he noted when Simone first addressed the group

Night settles in, the caravan puts 2 on watch with 2 shifts. The rest of the band pull out beds from the wagons and settle in for a far more comfortable night than a bedroll

Nira does what she can to contribute to the camp, whether by helping cook or helping clean. She doesn't want to be seen as taking advantage of the hospitality.

The meal is marvolous, especially by your on the road standards and perhaps even by some of th taverns you have eaten at.
The few stories Ramirez tells are met with great apprciation as is the offers of helping where you can, though Willard is not the only unseen servant cleaning up so there is not soo much to do as one might think.

Simone shares her own story, one that "Is sure to set your hair on end." Her crew gathers about, apparently eager for the tale and Simone starts with a log to poke the fire. "I've been savin this one my friends to be sure. Here on the edge of the Culverwood is the best place to tell it"

"More true than Soul Driver and twice as terrifying, for there is no hidin from the Skin Walkers."

Simone proceeds to tell a tale of decadence, corruption of spirit and insanity. The main characters are gnomes, prideful of their craft in the mines, powerful and rich through out the region and the fall to darkness and the evil of the Skin Walkers. Spirits that cloud the mind and destroy the soul. Spirits that could assume the forms of their victims and even of those in passing.
"Say a band of well to do's on the road."

Simone glances at Nira and shoots here a sly wink as she leans into the fires glow and continues the final part of how the the spirits took the form of the king's daughter, slew him and his queen, plunging the gnomes into turmoil and civil war and destroyed utterly the once proud clan

Her tale done, she sits back and smiles and declares herself tired and off to bed.

The crew exchange a lot of looks and and finally break into grins and laughter, congratulating Simone on another amazing tale

Night passes, dwan breaks and nothing untold happened in the dark. The dawn provides another fantastic meal of fresh meats, eggs, bread and fruit. The party is ready to go far before the wagon train and they wish you well as you continue, if you wish to

Hmerrin quickly loses his good humor as Simone proceeds with her story.

He spends the tale watching her intently while absently rubbing his chin in concentration.

The crowd breaks up.
Hmerrin murmurs to Nira, "that hit awfully close to the mark, don't you think?"

In the morning, before moving out, he seeks out Simone.
"Fine tale last night," he notes. "I was wondering if it contains a location for that clan of gnomes?"

The man tries to observe carefully, like he's seen other do, but reading people just isn't his forte.

Ramirez helps break camp and wonders how much of that story was just a story, and how much of it had some grains of truth attached to it. He joins Hmerrin in conversation with Simone and also tries to ask her about the gnomes location. He doesn't press too much if she is not willing to discuss, and lets the matter drop if she seems in any way offended.

Nira agrees with Hmerrin and whispers back to him. "Very close. I doubt that was just a story being told by chance. It was meant for us." She tries to get a feel as to whether there is more to Simone's story or whether it's intended as a message for the party.

It makes for an uneasy night for Nira. After her watch she sleeps lightly and when she awakes is relieved to find there has been no incident.

Nira casts her morning prep spells and hands out the air vests again.

"We'll keep our eyes open for any Skin Walkers" she says with a farewell wave to Simone.

It takes Desdichado a bit longer than the others to realize the potential of a coded message in the story. Not until he notices Hmerrin and Nira whispering together does he piece together that the tale might be for the Tide. His face darkens and it takes all his restraint not to confront the storyteller.

The next morning when the group talks to Simone he is there as well. "Yes, let's have it - why tell that story tonight?" he asks somewhat irritably.

The story Simone tells unnerves, and with good reason, several of the Tide.. Approaching the gnome the next morning with some questions and concerns about the tale

Simone, to any of the party's ability to tell is forthright in her answers and does not seem put off by the questions either. The gnomes of the story are supposed to be a few hours north of Kouri in the hills near a great pine grove. As to why tell the story now, It seemed like a good time. She says the last as she pulls on an overcoat with the symbol of Warrd emblazoned upon it. "I wish you well and good journey friends. Perhaps if you find yourselves in Plateau City over the winter months, you might look up my company.

The group heads out in front of the wagon group and is soon on their own upon the road. Was the meeting happenstance, divinely directed, a little of both?

By early afternoon the party arrives in Kouri. The large town is much like Waypoint, though it shows a deeper elven heritage than its younger sister city along Trade Road. A wall of brambles enveloped by a well managed hedge envelops the city with not a straight line of more than 15' anywhere about the perimeter. The brilliant green is broken by flowers and wild berries and the smell of juniper dominates the air. The gate is opened to travelers on Trade Road and the party passes by a handful of men and elf manning the opening with minimal questions and a few silver coins.
The group is directed to visit the White Stag or Evergreens as the two most popular taverns for travelling merchants.

The group heads to the closer of the taverns and soon has rooms and food lined up at Evergreens
Nira knows a good amount about the town and that it has much in common with Waypoint, although Kouri is a much older establishment. There is a small post, a messaging center for the WLA and a spot to crash in emergencies, usually unmanned.
A quick trip discovers that it is indeed unmanned. From the outside, it appears to be a small narrow building and it opens upon presentment of the WLA badge. Inside reveals, well a small narrow interior with a pair of cots and a bulletin board, currently with a single message dated nearly a year ago

The man returns to the Evergreens, and relays the message.
"Guessing we're heading into more shenanigans tomorrow", he sums up. "Through the woods, and then underground, and then who knows what. Get some rest. We're leaving early."

Having just arrived, and having not caused any trouble, Hmerrin chances getting a full night sleep.

Hmerrin relays the message posted and the group plans to head out early and very likely into danger. All but Nira, decide that tonight might be a rare night where they could sleep a bit more soundly in a comfortable bed and clock a full rest.

Nira takes her shift and the the night passes without incident and indeed, the party wakes quite refreshed.

An early breakfast is had and The Tide exit Kouri heading north to find a 'large grove of pine'

Gaffer takes to the air and within a few hours has lead the party to the grove. A small stand of 20 white pines that stand nearly 150' tall. to the north of the pines lies a hill where Gaffer has spied a small palisade of wood is built into the base of it. There is some light cover of shrubs and bushes about the cleared area outside of the wall, but it looks to not be attended well. A clear and well worn wagon trail demarks a path to the gate that stretches off to the east.

"I'd prefer to think the gnomes are victims, and get proven wrong than the other way around. There was a WLA person poking around up here last year.
Let's just knock, say we're from the WLA, saw the note in Kouri, and came up to see what happened. We ask some questions, try to poke around, and gauge reactions. Should at least get us in the door, I'd think.

Gaffer flies back to the group after his initial survey.

"I didn't prepare anything for speaking to them unfortunately, though the the area may be small enough that I can still commune and get an idea of what is close to us."

If the party does not mind a 10 minute wait, Gaffer will make sure if he out of sight from the palisade and cast Commune With Nature.

Through the spell he will seek to discover what number of people are around, the presence of any unnatural creatures, and if possible the state of terrain under the hill.

Before heading up to knock, it's decided that Gaffer should try a Commune with Nature spell and the druid readily agrees.
The druid falls into himself and it almost seems as if the yellow light of the sun shifts in hue a bit and the wind picks up from the nearby deeper Culverwood.

Gaffer feels a presence push in against him, studying him at some length as he internally seeks the answers to how many of noble race are within 15 miles, the presence of un natural creatures and what lies beneath the hill. Silence greets him, at first, but then a voice. Starting as a low moan of deep moist wood and slowly rising in pitch and volume to settle into a female form of what would best be thought of as an elf. The whisper enters your mind and while in one way it is a calming presence, Gaffer can feel a dark anger shuttered just outside
"There are 85 members of the noble race young druid. Most along Trade Road. Within my domain there are no unnatural creatures that would cause concern for you. As for the hill, the under rock is worked and I am not supposed to tell you what lies there."

Gaffer frowns as he receives the message, truly puzzled by what it could mean. "I've never had a communion quite like that before. I really hope it doesn't mean there is a Druid of Culverwood pulling strings in some way." He pauses, nodding his head as Des' decision. "I prepared the magic to cause an Earthquake in case we want to collapse the area."

He'll keep a good few steps behind his hardier allies as they approach the entrance.

"No Dez," he concedes. "Given Wardd has touched us twice on this, and now it seems like the Culverwood itself is upset with whatever's here, I can't help but think we're playing with the big kids now. We might wanna go with 'They're nasty and dangerous until proven otherwise'".

"Let's try coming in from the side, take a look at this palisade, and see what kind of guards we're dealing with, and maybe a way to sneak in. Back door maybe?"

Hmerrin proposes leaving the road, circling around, and coming in the hill from behind.

With Gaffer's unexpected response to his spell, the group decides to to do things 'real quiet like.' and they circle about towards the back where the hill might overlook the palisade. Moving up the hill the group finds the top area to be only moderately protected and the party has little trouble moving into position for a look.

What greets the party is the scene of a human male moving across the area from left to right carrying a bit of gear over his shoulder. It appears to be some rope and tackle equipment that might be found as part of a animal team for a wagon. The party can see the closed gate and working on some type or repair or maintenance perhaps, is another adult human male.

From the hill. you can see part of a building on the right hand side against the wall and it seems likely that it is an equipment building. Near the gate is a small bunkhouse and on the left side is what you can make out as possible a barn for animals

He checks the two men to see if they've made the party.

Hopefully, they haven't.

"Well," he says softly. "First we gotta figure out if there's an open cave, or a guarded cave, or a door below us. Then, we gotta deal with these two, preferably fast, silent, and non-lethal. Gaffer, can you do a fly by and give us a better idea of what we can't see from here?

I don't suppose anyone has a sleep spell handy?

Plan B is I got fly and invisibility potions. I can wing down there and knock out our friends, assuming they're just regular folks. And, if they're not, well, we'll find that out too.

Desdichado crouches with the others. "Sneaking is not a strength of mine, nor is magic," he whispers. "But I wonder - adding on to Hmerrin's idea - could someone cast Silence around the entrance down there? That might give us some time to fight or talk with these two without others who might be inside hearing and joining in."

Nira quickly goes over her spells. "I haven't got a silence spell but I do have a deep slumber spell. If they resist it then they'd perceive it to be an attack. Unless we're sure they're hostile I wouldn't feel comfortable attacking them without trying other things first."

She then turns her thinking to scouting. "How much scouting do you want done? I could cast an Ethereal Jaunt spell. Extended it would give me a couple of minutes of being invisible and being able to pass through solid objects. I could fly through walls and make a note of where things are. If you want more than that I could summon someone, but you might not like them."

The group discusses several possible things that could be done. Stealth was to be key. Gaffer trips and lands with a resounding SMACK upon the ground. Or at least, that is what it sounded like to The Tide. down below, no one moves to look about. Moments later the man with the gear is out of sight into the building.

Gaffer could do a fly by as just another bird
Hmerrin has potion of Fly, as does Danko and he can cast Improved invisibility, fly and teleport

Nira makes a note to herself that the next time she's in a town to purchase a Telepathic Bond spell. There's a few times now it would have been handy to have.

With the nod from Hmerrin, Nira backs away from the party. She doesn't want the man with the gear to hear her cast the spell. "If you hear any alarms you should probably come running. It means they'll have detected me". She takes out her metamagic rod and casts Ethereal Jaunt.

She knows she has limited time so makes sure to move quickly. Her plan is to scout around and fly through all the buildings she can see before returning to the party with time to spare. If anyone notices her she'll return to the party asap.

Gaffer pulls himself back up from his stumble and does his best to stay very still and not cause another disturbance until Nira can make it back.

Nira casts Ethereal Jaunt and fades out. She heads directly off of the hill top and is looking down upon the entire 40x40 enclosure in a few moments. Nira can see stables to the right with an attached shed and to her left is the larger equipment building with a large set of doors able to accommodate a wagon. A larder is against the back wall of the hill and directly into the hill is a set of large double doors. A Wagon track is built leading into the doors to allow an unhitched wagon to be pulled in. A smaller door is set within one of the larger doors to allow entry without opening the whole place.
Closer to the hillside doors is a dwarf with a broom in his hand, sweeping away dirt and small debris from the tracks.
Nira drops down and makes a circuit of the interior. Inside the larder is a human arranging stock on shelves. Breads, dried meats and cheese. She notes his movements are sluggish and he looks a little gaunt.
Inside the stables are accommodations for up to 6 horses, all stalls are currently empty. A dwarf is in here, currently he is working on one of the stall latches. He too, to Nira's eye looks pale and moving a bit ponderously.
Her time limited, she moves off to the equipment shed where she locates the man who entered a few minutes ago and another human. One is hanging the equipment that he carried in and the other is repairing a length of rope. Both them also look underfed and what also now strikes her is that this entire time and especially here, no one is talking, humming or doing anything except being fully occupied by the task they are currently performing.
Again, time is short and Nira has just enough to look into the hillside before needing to return.

Through the wooden double doors in the hill she moves. Beyond she finds an entry room. The tracks from the outside come to a rest in the center of the 20x30 room. The ceiling is 12' and a pair of lit torches are at the entrance on either side of the doors and there is another at each corner of the room. The chmaber appears as one might expect, plenty of room, tools for mining, hoists for larger chests and crates and a dozen or so such crates just off to the side of the central loading area.

At the far end of the chamber is an exit passage and standing next it, leaning against the wall is a armored human male

"Yeah, we're in the right place, and those folks are victims.

We can probably just ignore all of them except the guard inside the entry room.
He sounds like he's in on it.

We'll need to get in that door fast.
Ramirez casts a silence spell to keep things quiet, and Dez and I can jump him.
Danko can try that charm spell too.
If he's a victim, he'll be easy. And if he's not easy, then he's not a victim."

The man looks at Danko.
"You any good at opening locks?"

Nira reports back with what she found and the group quickly decides that the 4 humans and 2 dwarf are enslaved or otherwise a very low threat. The man inside the mine entrance is probably a different story.

Now the group just needs to get down from the 25' high perch they are on. you can simply jump, or head around to the front gate or use some magic to get down. The only person on the outside of any building is the man sitting by the front gate. He is one of the folk that the group believes to be controlled/enslaved/not a threat

If we agree to the drop I can feather fall the group to the ground. At least it should land us on our feet instead of on our backs

Ramirez indicates he is ready when the Tide is, and his cloak shifts to a pale green color while he waits for the word.

Hmerrin glances at Nira, and pulls a grappling hook and rope out of his pack.
He wedges the grappling hook into a sturdy looking tree, and casts the rope over the side of hill. He keeps it to one side, so as not to drop down directly in front of the door.

After taking his invisibility potion, he slides down the rope, counting on the condition of the workers to render them incapable of noticing the flapping rope, or just not caring.

No one wants drop 25' and Hmerrin creates a solution with a grappling hook and rope. After drinking a Invisibility potion, Hmerrin is down in front of the mine doors. A look across the 'courtyard' to the main gate shows the man there doing exactly what the fighter thought...nothing.
Danko casts Protection from Evil upon himself and goes down.
The dwarf sweeping, about 15' away looks up, but then, simply returns to the task of sweeping even as the rest of the party comes down the rope.
The rest of the group descends with Gaffer bringing up the rear.
Once all are down, Hmerrin whispers for Danko to get the door open.

Coming out of the Equipment shed is the human you saw about 10 minutes ago enter. He does not look at you or anywhere really, but simply moves across the yard carrying similar gear to what he brought from the barn, heading back to the barn.

Danko casts Improved Invisibility and checks the door and finds no traps or locks at all. A simple push opens it.

The tracks from the outside come to a rest in the center of the 20x30 room. The ceiling is 12' and a pair of lit torches are at the entrance on either side of the doors and there is another at each corner of the room. The chmaber appears as one might expect, plenty of room, tools for mining, hoists for larger chests and crates and a dozen or so such crates just off to the side of the central loading area.

At the far end of the chamber is an exit passage and standing next it, leaning against the wall is a armored human male. As the door opens he stands straighter off of the wall and takes several steps in your direction. In a friendly tone of voice he calls out,
"I'm sorry, but this mine is private property and I have the duty of asking you to leave."

Since the human outside doesn't seem to be paying much attention to anything other than his work, Desdichado stands near the door to the equipment shed, waiting for a signal from those inside that all is clear or that assistance is needed.

Hmerrin replies to the guard, moving diagonally so as to close without coming right up to the guy.

"Well, I'm also sorry. But we've seen too many people like those out front to just move on. Please step forward and allow my friend to take a look at you, and maybe you walk away from this."

Nira tries to soothe the man. "I do apologize for this. We've had a long journey and had to defend ourselves quite often lately. I'm Nira by the way." She raises her hand slightly and shows she is unarmed.

Danko remains quiet and moves to the side, invisible
Des enters at the call of Hmerrin
Hmerrin, even though he is invisible responds to the guard and implies that the group will not be deterred.
Nira attempts to smooth things over and raises her hands to demonstrate peaceful intentions
Ramirez, glad things haven't got stabby right away, inquires about the owners.

At the sound of Hmerrins voice and Des entering the man stops short and his face goes right to 'evalate your opponents who outnumber you greatly mode'.
Des does not detect any evil.
Now with a few more moments, Nira can see his weapon, a bastard sword is finely crafted with a bejeweled hilt. His black silk cloak is embroidered with silver thread and the under his tunic she can see a finely woven chain shirt. Certainly no charmed guard from any nearby town.

Alert and focused, he answers Ramirez, "The ownership is not presently down shaft and I do not know when they might be or where they reside when not here on inspection. I am Korlis and as you leave, may I have your names to and interest to pass along to the ownership when they are again present?"

The group identifies themselves and their purpose to Korlis. Adding information about the condition of those outside an perhaps that Korlis could be of aid to The Tide and or the people beyond the gates.
Hmerrin Only Highlight to display spoiler: {Moving in a bit closer you can see what appears to be makeup up Korlis' face and his eyes are catching a reflecting light a bit too much for a human or elf}

Korlis does not appear moved by the plight of those outside as Nira speaks and a moment later he confirms this "The condition of those employed here is not of my concern and I will one last time ask you to remove yourselves."

Coming up behind Korlis are 2 more men similarly equipped. Their arm are at their sides and not upon the handles of their bejeweled swords. Neither says anything, apparently deferring to Korlis
