As his. quickened spell fails Toston realizes the Chaos Beast is resistant to spells and given Toston's diversification of skillsets his caster level is weaker than it would otherwise be.
However Toston has a some tricks up his sleeve with respect to dealing with Spell reistance.
Toston casts Acid Arrow at the Chaos Beast (22 vs AC; no SR allowed; if this hits it takes 7 acid damage this round and 4 acid damage next round)
He then uses his metagic quicken rod to cast grease (which also does not allow spell resistance on a 10 foot square on the ground below the chaos beast. The chaos beast needs to make a DC 15 reflex save or fall. If the chaos beast tries to walk within or through the area of grease it can do so at half normal speed with a DC 10 Acrobatics check. Failure means it can't move that round (and must then make a Reflex save or fall), while failure by 5 or more means it falls (see the Acrobatics skill for details). Creatures that do not move on their turn do not need to make this check and are not considered flat-footed.

Several spells seem to harmless fizzle about the Chaos Beast, however the Acid Arrow and Enervation spells take a toll Combined with Gaffer's attacks and Hmerrin cutting ax blades the creature does not stand for long. It manages a few more strikes at Gaffer, but the Fire Elemental druid's damage reduction makes most of the wounds, mere scratches. The druid is also able to fully resist the curse of the Beast and is in no danger of turning into one in the future
The Chaos Beast devolves even further as it dies, becoming more like the slime a snail leaves behind.
The party is victorious! The creatures that came through the dimensional gateway have all been tracked down and put down. The Gateway is sealed and the dwarf clan made safe.

Hmerrin stows his axes, and takes a few deep breaths while surveying the cavern. "Well, that was fun," he deadpans. "Shall we get back to the ale and steak?"
The fighter will first regard the broken crystal, wondering if its valuable. But, after pretending to inspect it carefully, it is quickly apparent he has no idea what he's doing.
On the way back, he will slow down to relieve various dead creatures of anything shiny or possibly magical.

Des and Hmerrin give the broken crystal a look over, it does not appear to be anything overly unusual to either of them, Des picks up the shards and plans to give them to Haldrick The group circumnavigates the cavern and along one of the back walls, appears to be a vein of gold and silver. The creatures from the other dimensions though, apparently were not carrying anything of value.
Sarge channels the positive energy granted by Domi and heals the minor wounds from the last battle fully healing Hmerrin and Gaffer.
The party heads back and in just under 2 hours, find themselves coming upon the dwarf defensive line. 4 heavily armed dwarf, crossbow's pointing down give a cheer as you approach.

The group lets the dwarf guard troop know that the horrors lying in wait in the darkness have all been destroyed. The dwarf, grin and extend their hands in friendship and thanks. "You just need to sound the horn that you were given, a good short blast back by the gate will let them know to open it."
None of them react really to the news of the Chaos Beast, apparently not familiar with the creature and what it can do. They do, however, have enough awareness to realize they are fortunate that the party was able to destroy the creature and they thank you again.
The wounded dwarf are both doing well, and the caretaker makes the request that he be allowed to accompany them with the party on up. Now that the threat is gone, it will not be an issue to bring them up. Attention will be on the party and they can be slipped off to fully recover.
Sarge sounds the horn and the gate is opened shortly thereafter. The party moves through and the dwarfs seal the gate once again and take up position of guarding. "Until Haldrick gives a different order they will remain" the cleric tells the party as you make to the lift.
The Ascent is long, but you finally arrive at the top to find another set of heavily armed dwarf guard. One steps ahead, "By orders of the Forge Lord I ask you to stay where you are." He gives an aside nod and one of the guard departs. The group does not have to wait long, before Stohl comes in at a jog with a grin and booming "HA! I knew it" he heads straight for Sarge, "Well done cousin." Stepping back he looks to everyone else, "And you as well, I'm sure you did your part."
While very much wanting to hear all about it, Stohl is under some orders, "I'm to take you back to the guest quarters to allow you to rest, get some good food and drink and I suspect have a private conversation with Haldrick before meeting the Forge Lord Ulthern."
With that, Stohl does just that, and through some back passages you did not go down originally, you find yourself stepping from a concealed door and into the guest quarter hallway. "You'll find food and drink inside and you should expect Haldrick within an the hour." A short nod and a grin and Stohl is gone

"I've been thinking," he notes to Dez between bites. "You and I should stockpile us some handy potions when we get our next chance. Fly and Darkvision woulda been real helpful a couple times down there. Probably a bunch of others, too."

Toston is able to secure a basin of water, the suite is well stocked. Gaffer turns into a tiger and finds a good napping spot Sarge, Hmerrin and Des take up the good food and drink part. Finding fresh fruit, baked pastries and breads with salted pork and goat cheese in abundance
While they decompress from a few stressful and painful days, Hmerrin recaps with a few foreseeable needs. Specifically some potions that he and Des could certainly use to have on hand in case.
Within the hour Haldrick does indeed arrive, proceeded by a strong knock at the door and a moment to allow the group to invite him in. Haldrick enters, still clad in his fighting armor and with with battle ax 'Clipper' at his side.
He bids everyone who might have stood up to sit back down and he to finds a chair and sits down. You quickly note that Hladrick is alone without even an escort within the hall beyond.
He pours himself a drink of stout into a mug pulled from his hip, "I wanted to speak with you privately before presenting to the Forge Lord. Not that I think you returned without complete success, but well there it is. Was your mission a complete success and what bad news is there still?"

Toston adds "We fought some super powered Ghouls, the first time they kind of won and we barely escaped, but we were better prepared for round 2 and 3. We killed some the second encounter scaring a couple off. We continued and fought some undead twisted giant crabs and then some undead spiders and then some undead gibbering mouthers. Then we got to the part where the gate was and there was this crystal set in it and it kept changing scenes on different planes. But we destroyed the crystal using martial means and dragon fire. Right before we closed the gate it shifted to show a Rakshashas and I think it might be possible that they had something to do with your gate activating. We took a strategic retreat to avoid a fight with a chaos beast on the terms we originally encountered it as we were running low on resources. We rested up, went back and mopped up the ghouls we had left in the maze before fighting the chaos beast which actually was not undead. This proved out to be advantageous because I could soften it up with some casting of enervation. We were able to put an end to it working as a team. Then we came back to you to report our success."

He remembers back to their first meeting, when Haldrick was uncomfortable at the talk of those creatures. He focuses on Haldrick, listening and watching closely to what he might have to say "Haldrick, I know this may be difficult to discuss, but have you heard anything else about those creatures trying to get to the Loade, or even attack the Fhorge itself recently?"

Des and Toston give a good detailed run down of what happened and Haldrick listens with an occasional grunt of understanding. At mention of the Rakshasa and Hmerrin's comment on having dealt with Golden Eyes before Haldrick nods
The paladin asks and Haldrick answers. "I have and a few select others of the clan, including the Forge Lord. Rumors reached us about a month ago, from a member passing through with WLA. He was here to pass warning and caution. Rumors of the foul creatures operating in mountains. Putting together what the boy just said, I suppose it was you who uncovered them. We've got word from other clans and even further afield of rumors of the Rakshasa and a few of them contained the mention of Golden Eyes. None have tried to get here, my understanding is the things think of us as simply food and worse. If you have a track on them, keep at them. Afraid that is all I know. We have a few special 'Agents' in the field and hope to know more when they return. I'll get the information to you.
For now you have my thanks, and as plain as that is, the Forge Lord will be wanting to thank you as well. I will be sending Stohl to bring you to the main chambers in a few hours. Questions"

Haldrick hears the questions Toston asks, "What is the proper protocol when addressing a forge lord? The group discusses some possible next steps after leaving here and otherwise gets ready for an official meeting with the Forge Lord Ulthern
A knock at the door turns out to be tthe expected Stohl. He nods scratches his cheek, "Ready Then?" Stohl is clad in half plate, dwarven war ax at his hip, a black and gold trimmed cape, a silver tankard with a bone handle and an assortment gems woven into his hair and beard. He leads the group away, back through the cold iron and silver inlaid door and towards the great hall. Once again he takes you into the grand hall where great fires hang overhead 12' up, their massive chain extending up to the ceiling, another 50' higher. To the left the 80' wide chamber extends 200' and to the right it extends nearly 500. Massive columns of natural stone dot the cavern supporting the great weight of stone high above your heads and as your eyes are pulled upward, you spy great lengths of chains seem to be woven through an endless sea of stalactites, each tipped in steel. The chains eventually make their way to dozens of massive forges lining the walls The floor, has a pattern, hand cut that incorporates inlaid gold and gemstones.
The forges are lit and the hall is packed and laid out for some serious festing. Great tables stretch on either side down the entire length of the hall and it could be that the entire clan is here. A sight even Sarge does not recall having seen before. There are dwarf everywhere, some are already eating, like Farrin, whom you spot, or drinking. But as you enter, hammers ring out, the forges flare and the song you have heard before fills the room. At the far end upon a solid throne of polished granite is Ulthern, the Forge Lord is all of his regalia. Powerful dwarf stand 5 deep to his right and left and Sarge quickly spots Lord Hammerhand, Lord Deephall and Lady Silvermane. The three most powerful neighboring clan lords and not necessarily on the best of terms with her clan.
Stohl gives the group a nod, "Follow me" and strides down the center of the chamber with you in tow

Sarge pulls out her vestments for the meeting with the Forge Lord. They are not, perhaps, in pristine condition after spending time in her pack, but she's confident that the clan won't mind too much.
She rolls her eyes a little at Haldrick's attempted practical joke, and trusts that her companions are too canny to fall for it.
She looks around curiously as she follows Stohl. She had not been born into this clan, but she had married into it so long ago that it seemed like her own. But some parts of it--like this hall--were still unfamiliar to her.

Toston takes the outfit he received from Billy Brambleshire the taylor for putting an end to the Ghoust of Clover Way oh so long ago out of his pack.
(OOC: The outfit in question was awarded specified in a post on Saturday August 8th, 2015 9:54:48 AM by Hugh and confirmed Sunday August 9th, 2015 10:41:36 PM by DM Kathy. She originally described it as the equivalent of courtiers outfit but Toston wanted to hide his identity at the time so he had a super hero outfit made instead. It should still fit the quality befitting the occasion and without the hooded cowl with goggles and with the hat his father made for him should cut quite the figure)
It is a sturdy outfit consisting of boots, pants, long sleeved shirt, gloves, and cape with a hooded cowl. The outfit is gold in color which has been patterned to resemble scales. The shirt has a flame pattern worked into the center of chest.
The cowl can cover Toston's head, it has goggles at eye level and reptillian teeth worked into it to resemble a maw.
The boots and gloves have been worked to resemble talons and the cape has what appears to be a bone clasp that slightly juts from either side of the cape when clasped
Toston does not put the hooded cowl up though and dons his hat of special magnificence his father gave him instead
The hat of special magnificence is a fabulous mundane hat that consists of a cream colored feathered headdress capped by a crimson tricorne hat. There is an imitation peacock feather on the right hand side and an imitation azalea bloom on the left.
He straps his curveblade and spiked chain to his back and secures his various monk weapons on his belt.
"How do I look?" He asks his friends

Hmerrin rolls his eyes upwards as Haldrick plays his trick. "Riiiight," he answers. "I'll get right on that then."
Instead, the young man cleans off himself and his armor. He decides to leave the exploring gear behind, as well as his cloak and helm.
When Stohl shows up, Hmerrin is in full plate, minus helm, with his axes on his hips. He does wear his blue cape (from his courtier's outfit), figuring it works well with his mithril armor.
Toston asks how he looks. "Like a dragon," Hmerrin replies. He waits a beat, then hold his hands about a foot apart. "A teeny tiny dragon."
The dwarven chamber is seriously impressive. Hmerrin does his best to refrain from gazing about. Need to look heroic, after all. He strides down the aisle after Stohl, nodding to anyone who catches his eye.

Desdichado wishes he had a little more time to shine up his plate mail, but all in all feels presentable after a quick wash.
As the group walks into the great hall, Desdichado is awed by the spectacle, although he tries to hide that and look dignified as the group is lead down the chamber.

Gaffer will change into his finer clothes anyway, it's nothing too fancy, but it made do to meet the Prince in Dirt City so it seems fitting here, he's not sure if he has enough time to remove all of the ghoul from his leathers anyway.
He obediantly follows behind Stohl, chuckling at Hmerrin's teasing.

The group sets about a rather impressive transformation and Stohl gives an appreciative grin and nod when he first sees you. "Well done."
Stohl leads you down the great main chamber. Dwarf on either side hoist mugs as you pass and give appreciative nods to the group. About 30' from the throne Stohl comes to a stop. He stands for a few moments as the singing dies away in a great bass reverberating note into the stone. Soon, only the roar of the furnace fires is the sound of the hall. Another dozen heartbeats and Stohl speaks in a great voice for all to hear.
"Forge Lord Ulthern, Honored guest Lord Hammerhand, honored guest Lord Deephall and Most honored guest Lady SilvermaneIt. My fellow dwarf of clan Deepforge. It is my duty to present Fyrda Deepforge and her company. Toston Lotor, Hmerrin, Gaffer and Desdichado. They did journey here at the request of Haldrick Silvervein and with blade and spell did make our lower halls safe. On behalf of my clan, At his the thunder of nearly 500 fists, hard from decades of toiling in the rock, slam three times upon the tables down the hall
Stohl continues "and Haldrick Silvervein" Again the dwarf of the hall bang the tables 3 times "I request a boon from the Forge Lord!
The hall falls silent and Ulthern stands bringing up his right arm and sweeping his gaze across the chamber. He does not shout, his voice does not boom across the chamber, he merely speaks, but it sounds as if he is standing just before you and not 30' away in a great hall and you get the impression that down the entire length of the place, every dwarf easily hears what he says
""Well introduced and well requested Stohl of Deepforge. I will think on your request and provide my answer at the end of the feast. Now let the feast of victory begin"
Stohl turns and spreads his arms to lead you to a nearby table, "I hope you are still hungry and thirsty" Farrin is at the table already as well as another dozen dwarf all ready to hear tales, trade drinks and generally have a very good time.
You note the Forge lord and his guests also retire to a large table where it looks like some deliberations are going on, with you most certainly as the subject

"It was certainly what I was going for." he continues, "I suppose if anyone asks who I am wearing I will have to say Brambleshire."
He too partakes of the amenities.

Hmerrin catches that the lady elf is "Most Honored", while the two fellas were just "Honored". Something to that, I'm sure.
He also picks up that there's a boon being discussed, but no one has said what that is.....
But, now seems to be a time to hear tales, trade drinks and generally have a very good time. He can do that.
At some opportune point in the revelry, the lad does lean into Stohl's ear and ask, "Boon?"

Desdichado sits down near Farrin and some dwarves he doesn't know, generally enjoying the food, drink, and company. If given a chance in between swapping stories about heroic exploits, he leans in close to Farrin and asks "what's this about Stohl's boon?"

Gaffer sticks close to the others, a bit uncertain in the crowded hall of Dwarves. He eats hungrily and listens to whatever stories the others care to share.
Glancing occasionally at the deliberations going on, he is curious if the Forge Lord knew they were coming, and whether these are formalities or actual discussions, not that it changes much for him either way.

The party finds themselves at a large table pretty close to what would be considered the 'head' of the party, using where the visiting lords and Ulthern himself are sitting. Tankards clash and the festivities kick up into drinking songs, drinking contests, 'yo momma's a goblin' jokes, some arm wrestling and 'you call that a beard' comparisons.
Several about the table with the party compliment Toston upon his overall look and just about everyone of them ask Sarge how she is getting along surrounded by non dwarf AND terribly exposed by the open sky. Some make the comments in jest, while others seem truly amazed by her fortitude
At the table with the party, there is plenty of interest in the exploits of the group and life back where ever they are from. For the dwarf, they trade stories of 'That time Farrin got swatted by a fire giant and bounced all of the way down the mountain to the valley river' and 'That time Dervin had a severed troll head attached to his leg that just kept biting him' Good times and good stories
Most of the food upon the tables is root vegetables, breads and cheeses. The main course shows up a little later, by way of a great parade that enters from the west wall. 4 dwarf enter with a large platter held over head and upon the platter is a massive smoke cooked boar. 20 such groups of dwarf come in, one after the other and delivering a platter of boar to each great table. The spectacle is accompanied by a great deal of cheering and sound the overall din of the party is greatly reduced as several hundred dwarf have mouthfuls of boar
Hmerrin and Des inquire on the boon part of the speech that started all of this. Another dwarf at the table leans in. A boon, Yes, dwarf booning. Well, you see when a dwarf man loves a dwarf woman very much..." an elbow into his side from Farrin ends the joke with some chuckles and the hoisting of full tankards. Farrin answers, "Guess you could say that , Stohl and i are your sponsors. Haldrick cannot ask direct like that, being too close to Sarge, but me and Stohl. We're farther removed and so there you go."
Hmerrin asks Stohl and he supplies a similar answer, "Haldrick can't ask and we can. And don't worry, given that you guys all actually met Ulthern, Farrin and I are pretty sure you won't be challenged to dual of rights by Lord Hammerhand, Lord Deephall or even Lady SilvermaneIt." Stohl grins and gives Hmerrin several strong pats to the shoulder as he gets up, "I gotta go water the mushrooms, be right back."

Outwardly, Desdichado laughs and says "If they want a duel, by Domi I'll be glad to give them one!" Internally, he's still as confused as ever as to what the boon is. If there's no resolution to this question soon, he thinks, he'll have to ask Sarge what this is about. He has a suspicion that there may be some clan animosity because the Tide helped Haldrick and his kin.

Hmerrin comes to the conclusion that if there was a favor asked, he's not gonna find out about it. He decides to forget about it, and enjoy himself.
The lad shares about the time Toston Jumped into a Lake to attack a Gibbering Mouther.
Then he has some food. And then, he has some more food.
"Definitely liking the feasting part," he notes happily.

She enjoys the celebration and doesn't fret overmuch about the boon. They'll find out. Or they won't. Either way, the boar is delicious.

To Hmerrin he says, "Well I only did it because I could actually see at that point having changed form."
He thanks those who compliment his ensemble and tells them if they are interested if they ever find themselves in Clover Way in Dirt City they can have something for themselves from Billy Brambleshire the tailor.

Gaffer enjoys the friendly atmosphere, laughing heartily at the Dwarves stories, and very much enjoys the food and drink. Seeing that Sarge is not to concerned about the boon and any potential duels, he relaxes himself and ignores the conversation at the end of the hall until they are called over.

Hmerrin shares when Toston jumped into a lake to attack the Gibbering Mouthers, and Toston expounds on the reasons for it. The dwarf at the table eat the story up as they toast to the very dwarf-like solution Toston employed. "A whole new meaning to Flaming Gnomish you are master Toston" "Here here" Clank...gulp...gulp...gulp...burp!
Des makes light of the possible dual challenge that Stohl casually mentioned and the dwarf provide a cheer for that as well. A delightful little diddy of a drinking song that involved a rather stout woman whose hips are wider than the wheelbarrrow she employs down the narrow streets of a small town
The feast lasts for the better part of 2 hours before the next course arrives, an onion and goat cheese soup with fresh hearty bread and a selection of herb and plain butters. This is accompanied by a great more drink as well.
Impromptu performances of dance and song break out all over the hall including a short one at the head table.
A massive bell sounds through out the hall and the dwarf all quickly climb down from tables, migrate back to their seats and generally calm down to a low murmur. Stohl and Farrin take a long drink to drain their mugs and refill them. "Best get a mug full ready, you're not going to have the chance to refill for a bit and there are plenty of toasts to go!" fills in Dervin, one of the others at your table

On the advise of the dwarf at the table with them, the party secures a full tankard of ale and Sarge goes a bit further and puts another full drink under her chair Ulthern stands as do the other 3 visiting clan lords, quickly followed by the entire hall, and he hoists a beautifully polished purple amythest tankard above his head. Everyone in the hall hoists thier mug and falls silent and Ulthern speaks after a few moments. His voice is once again carries as if he standing just before you, "The clan of Deepforge, tonight we celebrate with honored guests." he turns slightly to look at the other lords with him. "We drink for our freindship with our Honored guest Lord Hammerhand." Drink "We drink for our freindship with our Honored guest Lord Deephall." Drink "We drink for our freindship with our Most Honored guest Lady SilvermaneIt." Drink
The Forge Lord then sweeps his gaze to the table where the party stands
"Stohl and Farrin, come forth with your charges for your request will be most honored this night." Stohl and Farrin shoot each other a grin and turn to the party. "All right friends, that's our call. Follow us and be polite." Stohl and Farrin quickly snatch a full mug from the table and then, ale mugs in hand, step away from the table and make their way to stand about 15' from Forge Lord Ulthern

Knew it. Hmerrin congratulates himself on picking up the 'Most' honorific meant something more. Though it wasn't until he overheard the table that he realized that the Forge Lord may have also just applied it to the Tide.

The lad again follows Stohl's lead, grabs a mug, and trots out beside, but slightly behind, the two dwarves.
"Most honored?" mumbles Desdichado to himself. "That sounds, well, like an honor."
As he stands, he downs the last of his mug and carries it with him as he follows Stohl and Farrin with the rest of the group.

Everyone picks up that something out of the ordinary is being set to occur. Stohl and Farrin stand straight with shoulders back and a slight swell to their chest. Stohl speaks, "Forge Lord Ulthern." mugs are raised in toast for a drink "Honored guest Lord Hammerhand." mugs are raised in toast for a drink "Honored guest Lord Deephall." mugs are raised in toast for a drink "Most Honored guest Lady SilvermaneIt." mugs are raised in toast for a drink "I am honored to present our cousin Fyrda Deepforge and her companions, Hmerrin, Toston, Gaffer and Desdichado. Known heroes of Dirt City, outstanding members of Woldian League of Adventurers. The Tide."
Ulthern and his 3 guests give a short nod of recognition to each as Stohl announces them.
Ulthern turns to his left and a dwarf moves up quickly with a small coffer of polished red granite with emerald inlay. Ulthern opens it and turn to speak to the hall beyond the party, "My clansman, brothers and sisters of Deepforge. I must tell you that our forges have been made safe through the blood and might of these before you. Our clan was under direct and dire threat by creatures beyond our plane. Despite our own bravery and sacrifice, the threat was beyond us here. Our call was answered by our sister Fyrda. Without thought of reward or expectation and so our brothers, Farrin and Stohl, look to show our gratitude and so we shall."
The hall is deathly quiet and the looks upon Lords Hammerhand, Deephall and Lady SilvermaneIt show some reservations as each casts a quick glance to the contents of the coffer.
Ulthern reaches in a extracts a small spherical polished blue with green flecks rock, perhaps some kind of agate. Ulthern then calls forth, this time the Forge actually doe shout, his base voice booms across the hall Fydra, Hmerrin, Toston, Gaffer, Desdichado. Step forward and recieve our most honored boon." Ulthern continues as you move forward From this day forth for all ages! By my proclamation as Forge Lord! These so named and attired are of the clan of Deepforge!"
There is a moment of silence as the declaration sinks in and then the dwarven hall erupts into applause, shouts, table pounding and several personal horns.
Ulthern presents each party member with a stone that glows briefly when you take it and then proceeds to float and circle your head.
