Note: The doors to Shale House are closed and barred from the inside (as per usual at night in Dirt City), including the Foyer Door that the Tide used to leave. The broken window that Korgin smashed to enter Tombo’s has a board nailed up to cover the smashed window.
Hmerrin tries the door and starts knocking, "C'mon, it’s us. Let us in already." He asks about messenger services that would guarantee that all the Houses won’t know already. The only one he can come up with was the WLA. Figures.
Sarge looks at Shale House. "Somebody's been securing the place," she says. "I guess that's good." If necessary, she adds her voice to Hmerrin's.
Desdichado comments about the homecoming. He has to think and discovers they have been gone for over two hours. Maybe whoever boarded up the window is still awake?
Toston reports on the Wolf patrol and that tut, tut, it looks like rain.
Wilford can’t think of a reliable courier either, and listens at the door (get +2 to Perception check below)

At Hmerrin’s irritated knock and call, there is some muffled talking behind the door (Perception DC 21 Highlight to display spoiler: { voice 1: who? Voice 2: one of Toston’s friends voice 3: let them in}), and then there is a rattling and the door opens, washing the street immediately in front in lantern light. It turns out it is Nissa, Toston’s fiance’, and four warriors; Alston, Hellin, Umpip, and Lorissa. They have Korgim on a cot in the hallway, and have cleaned up the bits of glass, wood, and blood that used to be on Tombo’s floor.
Nissa puts up a hand to forestall Toston’s questions. “We were gathering the last of our stuff from the row house to take to the new digs Below, and had to stay the night. “Lorissa was on watch and heard the commotion down here, so we armored up and came, only to find the half-dead dwarf. It took a while to convince him of who we were, but I had enough personal data on Toston for that to be my bone fides. So we secured the place and waited for you to come back.”
The commotion wakes Korgin, and he is able to provide more information. “Lyntin Greenshoot was sleeping at WLA tonight, and so was this Blood Witch and Fighter team passing through, called themselves Kahuna and Ka-ne. Based on your report, it sounds like they were killed in their sleep without a chance to fight back.”

"Korgin, when we searched the WLA looking for who might have done this, it looked like the people that broke in also took some books out of Anduin's room. Any idea who might have wanted some of his books, or why?"
"I could use some rest and time to think on what's happened. Maybe we can talk more at sun up."
Desdichado starts to walk upstairs to the common room to get a bit of rest before sunrise. He stops on the stairs and says, "One more thing, I should probably also mention that we...uh...battered down Anduin's door."
Toston recognizes the voice of his future wife and followers while they were waiting to be let in. He says, "Thank you for securing Shale House. That was some quick thinking. We honestly were concerned that others might have been in danger but sadly we were too late."
Toston says to Nissa, "I don't suppose you could scry on the WLA chapterhouse for me? I'm curious to see what the Wolves may be doing. Toston does his best to describe everything he can about the WLA chapterhouse and specifically Anduin's room. He is really curious to possibly catch a glimpse at what the Wolves are up to. He wonders if seeing their investigation may provide a clue as to who might have done it. He also wants to make sure they haven't somehow traced the Tide to actually being at the chapterhouse so close to the attack.
Toston says to Kogrim, "What do you know of Lyntin, Kahuna and Ka-ne? Did they have any enemies? If you are not up to it we can talk more in the morning."

"Maybe in the morning we can get Korgin healed up, and out of here on a caravan or boat or something, and he can relay what's happened," is all the lad can offer at this point.
The young fighter heads back to his room, resolving to build a brace for his door the next day.

Des gives Korgin a quick run down and asks the dwarf if he has any ideas. He also mentions the destruction of the headmasters door Toston thanks Nissa and asks if she can possibly scry on the WLA to perhaps see what the Wolf patrol is up to. He then asks Korgin about Lyntin, Kahuna and Ka-ne Hmerrin suggests getting Korgin healed up and asking the dwarf to be the messenger to the next WLA outpost, in case this is not a local attack On the subject of the missing books, Sarge puts forth the theory that Anduin took him with to wherever it is he went. AFter all, the door was still quite secured when they arrived and nothing else was missing or disturbed Gaffer agrees with Sarge and wonders how many know about the WLA here in Dirt City and could a list be made. Wil remains silent and listens Nissa smiles and shakes her head no. "Scrying is not something you just do. The spell takes time, an hour specifically and I need a subject, not a location." Korgin takes in a breath and pours himself an ale. "Lyntin came in perhaps a week ago and Kahuna and Ka-ne only 3 days ago. Afraid I did not know much about any of them. My very brief conversation with Lyntin let me know I did not want to have any more. I let him be to the books he was looking at. The other two, as I said, only just arrived and I cannot add much more." Korgin takes a drink and nods to Hmerrin, "I have no issue with your plan. Would appreciate you and a few more friends go with me tomorrow to get my stuff and I'll head out to get word to the nearest WLA."
Korgin gives Des a small smile, "Anduin's not going to be overly happy when he comes home to be certain." Korgin also agrees with Sarge and Gaffer, "Anduin is a wiazard, my guess would be the missing books from the shelf to be his spellbooks."
The group retires as their is little more to do this night, or what is left of the night. Dawn is about 3 hours away and so the group retires, rests and morning comes.

That was a long time ago.
"Mmmghhhh," Sarge says, hauling herself up to sit on the edge of her bed. "Domi's sake, is somebody playing games with the sun? 'Cause I'm pretty sure I just went to bed ten minutes ago."
But she gets up, splashes some water in the direction of her face, gets dressed, and goes to meet the others. "Talking of scrying," she says, though nobody was, "I could cast the spell, too, if we needed it. Although Toston's girl is probably better at it."

The group wakes, each in their own way and quickly settles on heading back to the WLA building. Korgin assures Des that he has means and such back in his room. "If they left my stuff, they surely didn't find my stash."
A more direct route is taken and the streets are fairly active as the party makes their way. Out of South Pack and down the main thoroughfare into Garotte Square and from there, into Moontown. As group like they are, The Tide have little concern from pick pockets and muggers and even in Dirt City a reason is generally needed to kill someone. So, the party makes fairly good time on the main to Moontown. Here the pace slows and winding streets demand a bit more caution and simply more attention to keep your bearing to where you are going and not get turned around. Even in the day, the alleys are dim and dark. The damp musty smell hangs in the air, especially in the early hours. Sarge and Des can easily smell the rank, rancid offal and trash strewn here and there. The others, apparently use to it, don't seem to bother.
You reach the WLA building and find it much like you left. The glass and wood still lie in the back alleyway. Around front, the door is closed. Korgin looks tot eh group "So who's climbing up to open the door?"

"I was here for a month, apparently should have set sail a couple days ago. I didn't know the man. He left maybe a week ago, or rather i noticed him not around about then."
Sarge tries teh front door real quick, but the group had locked it on thier way out
Hmerrin had a rope last night and the DM assumes he has it now. In short order the group is back inside the WLA and a quick look around shows it to be in teh same state it was when they left

Hmerrin snaps back from wherever he drifted off to, and after throwing up the grapple, climbs into the WLA.
Standing with the rest of the group, he waits while Korgin retrieves his stuff.
After a pause, he steps through Anduin's broken door, finds some paper and a writing tool, and scribbles out a note.
'Sorry about the door. Hmerrin.'
"That should get him out of here, and showing up at Shale House whenever he arrives," he declares.
While he's there, the lad will size up the door, and lay a guess as to what he'd need to replace it. [Craft - Carpentry 22]

Korgin gets his gear and his stash and lets the group know he has the means to get out of Dirt City and to get passage to the Emerald Kingdom. From there he can get just about anywhere. He assures all that armor and weapons in hand, he will be fine at this point and thanks The Tide greatly, for without them, he'd be a corpse as well.
Korgin exits through the main door and moves out towards the docks
Hmerrin pens out a not for Anduin and looks over what used to be door. It was a very well built iron bound wooden door, though it is not beyond his carpentry skills and certainly not beyond his purse to replace.
The Tide look through the WLA building and it appears undisturbed from the early hours of a few hours ago when they were last here. The front door can be secured and the debris in the alleyway can be picked up easy enough. The Tide is left with a mystery on the attack. The only clue found was the earring in Korgin's room. Fallen from its owner in the scrap with the dwarf. Worth little, made of solid silver, but of interest is given upon a fighters 25th win in the arena. No easy feat

Korgin is headed out of town and the group decides to follow up on the earring and with that, they head towards the arena. Full Moon market, the largest in Dirt City and located very close to the Arena is where the party begins. Vendors and Craftsmen shout their wares and values, Customers jostle for positions bartering with the sellers, as others move through the crowd. Some to keep an eye on others, some trying not to be seen. Full Moon Market in all of its glory is high energy place and a good one to find what you might be looking for. It's also a great place to get your coins swiped
The party, at large, is not new to Dirt City, and able to navigate without incident. Perception DC 20 Highlight to display spoiler: { You witness at least 4 pick pocketing events and one man being escorted through the crowd and away from a vendor at knife point. Ah Market time in Dirt City.}
There are multiple sellers of lost things and stands where one can sell things that other people have lost. One such place is This-n-That, where a human man stands in a leather apron with a line of small sculpture figurines on display Another the group spies is Out with the Old, manned by a pair of humans and a small collection of hand mirrors, beads and ointment jars

Toston notices the pickpockets and the person being escorted away.

He says to the man, "Did you carve these yourself?"
After hearing the answer he asks the man, "Just who are the likenesses on these carvings?"
After getting the answers from the man he says, "My late grand da carved too. You ever hear of a gnome named Topip Warmorn?"

(Perception: 21)(Diplomacy: 16) Wil attempts some diplomacy with the underbelly of the city attempting to box in a few of the pick pockets for questions about the incident at the WLA. "Hey, I understand your just trying to make a living. Been there a few years ago but I have a number of questions," he says. "Have you heard of any rumors lately. Anything about a break in or someone who just came across some extra cash all of a sudden?"
Desdichado frowns as he sees all the pickpocketing taking place. "What kind of town is this, that this is the only way for so many people to get by." He keeps his wits about him, and focuses on their mission at the Arena.
Hmerrin nods at Toston's warning, and can only grin ruefully at Dez's comment. "Welcome to Dirt City," he replies.
Walking with Wil, he waits for the priest to finish up, and then pulls out the earring the group found. "This is for winning 25 fights, right? Any idea how I can find the previous owner? Might be worth something to him to get it back." [Diplomacy 8]

Toston is the first to notice and point out the pick pockets, telling his companions to keep their wits about them. Gaffer pats himself down, all is where it should be Wil moves to try and strike up a conversation with a nearby pick pocket. The would be thief gives Wil a startled look at being caught and makes quick an escape. Desdichado frowns, "What kind of town is this, that this is the only way for so many people to get by." Hmerrin replies, "Dirt City." the fighter waits on Wil a bit and Sarge keeps her eye out and stays about the group
The young man Wil began to approach attempts to bolt and jostles several in the crowd. The man who just lost his coins looks about and spies the would be thief and calls in alarm "Stop that thieving grubber!" Several more in the vicinity take up the call and shouts ring out. The young man dashes past a nearby cart and with a fluid kick, takes out a block and starts the cart to rolling. All in all it is a farily impressive escape from any who are after him and the party also notes that several others in the crowd impede some of the rough pursuit by 'accident' The general commotion lasts a good 15- 20 minutes, but Full Moon Market soon enough is back is it's busy self. Not like this does not happen all the time after all. However at this point the pick pocket gang, as you now realize have all melted away.
As Hmerrin wanted to find a pawn shop, both the Out With the Old and This-n-That fit the bill. Slapping on what he hopes is a good face, the young man steps up and pulls out the earring. Looking over the piece, he nods in agreement, "I'd say so that it is a 25 win token. Probably hot, maybe hocked. How'd you come it, cause as grubbers for gold you didn't win it kid."

Sarge does try to stop the pickpocket as he scampers away, but the marketplace is too crowded and his accomplices too canny. She returns, huffing and puffing, to the group. She looks around for anyone injured in the dust-up, ready to provide splints and bandages--and healing spells if need be.

Toston says to Des in hushed tones, "We are trying to make things better but we can't concern ourselves with every bit of petty larceny that happens. If we did we'd never get anything else done. Best deal with this murder we are investigating as it could be related to that portent of ruin the water elemental shared with us. They say a fish rots from the head. If we improve Dirt City from the top down where we can I got to think it would have an impact."
Toston shakes his head with respect to Wil and Hmerrin's clumsy approach with respect to the earring. He was going to try to chat up the guy with the sculptures to see if he could get any clues from him about the earring. He was planning to make a round about approach as he was hoping if the carvings were of arena fighters the guy would know their win records and list them in his spiel. Sadly that was not meant to be so he listens in on what Hmerrin replies to the guy.

Is there a list of '25 wins' we could check out? Or have you heard about anyone losing one of these and looking for it? Something like this, I'd think the person would want it back."

I wonder if any of the shop owners will remember me?"

Almost instantly his half grin returns, but that grin never reaches his eyes, which regard the man with a cold gleam.
"No," he replies softly, almost sweetly. "I don't have one of these yet. But, after finding this, I'd very much like to meet the man who did."
His glances at the earring, and then back at the man.
"Very much."

During the outburst Sarge makes a few moves, but the crowds slow her and she relents rather than going aggressive and bull rushing through. He also asks if the man know of a list of such accomplishments, perhaps a trophy or plaque Wil gives the pickpockets a bit of thought, a few years back there were several groups he knew of that operated in such fashion and then the dozens of solos and the unspoken pact of helping a fellow in need. What then occurs to Wil that might be an issue, what if someone recognizes him from his former more crimminal activity. Dirty City Merchants who get taken by Grubbers are not overly forgiving. So far so good on not having his hand chopped off though
Gaffer moves about and starts to cast a spell, when several merchants yell at him, "Hey!, just what do you think you're doing?" The spell has been cast though and the presence of magic leaps to him. Another nearby merchant yells at gaffer to get out of here and the call is picked up by several others
The group is at This-n-That and the man in the apron answers Toston just before Hmerrin replies. "I do carve some of them, my girls carve as well. Been trying to teach them the trade as i'm getting on in health and pretty soon the 4 of them will have to carry the household." Bluff DC 15 a well told if fabled tale to bring some sympathy from a buyer "Sorry I've heard of your pops and the likeness's are of no one particular. Folks you see and remember."
Hmerrin replies softly, coolly and the look is not lost on the merchant. Someone has made an error and the man in the leather apron is pretty sure it was not the well armed young man with the earring. "Beggin your pardon sir, i meant no disrespect, a bit of the delirium coming through." he smiles nervously, "What I meant to say now that I look closely at it was, this is, yes most certainly a silver 25 win." He turns it over in his hand and looks closely at it and back to Hmerrin, "But truthfully sir, there is no way to really know to whom it belonged to."

Toston looks at the carved figures and see if any of them are of gnomes. If so he looks to see if any bear a resemblance to anyone he knows. Failing that he sees to see if any of the carvings represent anyone he knows.
He wants to buy one of the carvings from the man but it really depends on what they look like.
If any of them reach his parameters he asks the man, "How much for that carving?"
After completing the transaction he then says, "How often do people reach 25 victories in the arena? I mean obviously often enough that there are earrings to commemorate the feat but Silver is still a precious metal. There has to be some way to figure out just how many combatants have 25 wins."

Wil readies himself to come to Gaffer's aid, but it is not needed Des and Hmerrin suggest maybe moving on to the arena itself
Toston asks if the man knows how common a 25 win is
"25 wins is pretty rare. Maybe a handful a year. I just couldn't tell you who this would belong to."
The group exits the Full Moon Market and heads north a few hundred feet to the Arena. Currently there are no contests and the exterior is fairly quiet. A few men at arms are about, but the lower concourse is open. From outside you can see others milling about the open air pillars of lower level.

Toston puts down 25 gold to commission a carving of The Tide. The man accepts the gold and nods, "I haven't seen you all together really so perhaps I could stop by tomorrow or the next day, sorta get a look at you and a quick sketch. Wherever you'd like to meet is fine." Toston, DM Imagines, agrees and picks locale, the man agrees and that is that
At the Arena the group discovers quickly that there is no hall of records, or commemorative plaques or trophies or such things. There are a few statues of benefactors to the arena, those who have likely provided large sums of gold to build sections of it or sponsor some large grand event. None of the names of such people are very recent.
The Men-at-Arms suggest the group come back on a fight day. Sarge is dead on, the group wants to talk to a super fan and on fight day is when you would have the best chance to run into the big fans who will be more than happy to chat up their favorite fighters. Tell you far more than you could possibly care about.
One of the guard rolls his eyes, "Oh the nit picking and crazy statistics some of these people keep. Jarlin could never beat blah blah on sand when the weather is this or whatever. Seriously these people needs lives and to move out of their parents house. Next big deal is happening in a couple days."

The group decides that a scry spell is worth it. All it uses is an hour of casting time really. Sarge needs a pool of water to cast the spell and there are none of those about in Dirt City. Spider Park is last on everyone's list to get repaired and it never had a pool in the first place. Thus it falls to Nissa who is willing to do so.
Nissa is going to head out with a few of her fellow gnomes to get her mirror and come back to Shale House to cast the spell. "If something goes wrong I would, quite frankly, like them to think the spell came from here and not my home." Nissa heads out to fetch her mirror
Toston mentions the sketch and the carving and the group agrees or remains silent on the matter which is the same thing.
Nissa is back within the hour and goes into Toston's room to begin casting the spell. "No need to lurk about as I do this, none of you get to see anything anyway. Should take just over an hour and I'll tell you what I can tell."
An hour later she emerges, "Well, that went no where really quickly. I do not get the sense whoever it was, was protected or shielded or that they were able to reverse the spell. It simply didn't take."

The group discusses next moves upon learning that they are not going to be learning anything from the Scrying attempt. Nissa smiles, "Oh you do care." she coos playfully. "Yes, it is possible to reverse a scry to an extent. It is why i wanted to perform the spell here in the first place. I think those of us not part of The Tide should return to the City Below. It should be the safest place for us while you sort things out up here." Nissa goes about collecting a few things to head back with some of the others that have been hanging out for the day.
Toston brings up getting into he Arena as fighters. Wil shares what he knows, which is quite a bit. Wil has no direct connections with the arena. The fights are not all lethal, most are not. Anyone can sign up and get thrown into the pool to begin their gladiator career, but you also fight under arena law. Arena weapons, maybe armor and no magic. Owners, like the Houses and some outside wealthy people can host matches, sponsor combatants and all kids of things. Some have even simply put on massive shows just to show off.
Sarge and Dez are not overly keen on stepping into the fights but rather would like to try the super fan route on the day after the next when the next event opens. Dez would want to see the events before stepping in himself
Regardless of the direction, just go to see or go to step into the common pool, both are not able to be pursued until the day after tomorrow.

Hmerrin decides to use the time to start work on replacing the door to Anduin's room in the WLA. It takes a good part of the rest of the day to locate purchase and bring the materials back to Shale House. fashioning the door takes up the rest, but by that evening, he has a well built replacement door Toston heads ove to Three bits, perhaps the information broker will have some information Wil decides on a day of socializing in Tombo's. Never really a bad idea. The excitement of last night and the mess left behind has been cleared and Wil cannot see a trace of the blood that was all over just a few hours ago. The window has not been replaced yet, but in Dirt City, a window boarded up is hardly something out of the ordinary. Gaffer goes with Toston and Sarge hangs around Hmerrin. Desdichado keeps company with Wil
The patrons of The Buttering Rum all seem of a normal sort as the day goes along and Wil and Des exchange minor talk and pick up bits of everyday life in the area. Nothing to call unusual and no one is talking about anything eventful last night. Most of the Buttering Rum patrons live within several blocks of the establishment
Toston and Gaffer arrive at the small curio shop that serves as a front to the real operation of the information broker known as Three Bits. Inside Toston spies her just behind the counter, tinkering with something. Off to the right, just down an isle by some old wooden bookcase, stands an elderly man apparently appraising the piece of furniture. Three Bits looks up as the door swings closed behind you and provides a head bob of welcome and recognition. She sets down whatever it was in her hands behing the counter and out of sight and steps closer to the counter. "Good afternoon Toston and Gaffer of The Tide. What adventure brings you by?"

Three Bits looks towards the elderly man and then back to Toston and gives the gnome a wink. "The shop always has a patron and so what can I do for you today?" The older man seems a bit familiar to Toston, but he cannot place him and it very well could be that wrinkled old human men all kind of look alike. Without direct interaction for a minute or so, there is nothing to sense about him. To Gaffer and Toston he is what he appears to be, a human male in his fifties looking at a bookcase of books
Three Bits, as always is a bit shifty, but that is normal for her. Three Bits will explain she would need a bit of time on the earring to come up with anything the group does not already know and "of course there are costs involved with such things."
"Why don't you bring the gang by tomorrow evening after dinner and we can discuss what I have been able to learn and what the information is worth."
Wil, Hmerrin, Sarge and Des enjoy a nice low stress time in the lounge of the Buttering Ram.
Toston and Gaffer return, the group eventually retires night settles in and morning arrives. The games are scheduled for tomorrow, the meeting with Three Bits is tonight and Hmerrin has plenty of time to install the door.
At some point over breakfast, Tombo knocks and enters, "Pardon the intrusion sirs, but I was hoping to ask for permission to alter the front area. Seeing how one of the main windows was taken out, I was wondering if I could turn the window into a front door. Was thinking an exterior door direct would help out. What do you think?"

Desdichado over at Tombo. "I agree with Sarge - doesn't really feel like my place to say. But, if you want my opinion, I don't see the harm in it. It would be nice to have a door their considering...well, what Toston just said."
To Gaffer he replies, "Sure, I'm ready to go over as soon as everyone else is."

Wil agrees with the others. "A door would be create. We could replace all the windows with doors." He says with a smile. "So we get to go meet Three Bits again, eh."

Hmerrin installs the door into the WLA, and writes a follow up note to explain it.
Then, he goes to bed.
In the morning, he nods at Tombo. "Go for it," he responds. "Anything good for business is good for us, after all."
After a leisurely breakfast, the lad rises. "Guess we're off to the games," he comments. "Best suit up, and meet back here in about 20."
Hmerrin dons his gear, waits for his comrades, and then heads back to the Arena.
