The Tower of Desolation

Lornak crouches and slides up the riverbed a bit, eyes on the tower in the distance
Toston drinks a Potion of hiding and moves up as well
Ethani remains where she is but is alert
Gaffer Casts Pass Witout A Trace again, to refresh the previous spell for the final approach
Wil has issues, but he also has an idea. Is there additional landscape the group could use.
Hmerrin puts a request to Gaffer to become a bird and fly about.

The group is still hunkered along the riverbed, 100' from the tower and the ruins beneath it. The party can get within 60' of the tower by staying in the riverbed
itself. Once up, there is little in the way of concealment. Toston and Lornak are both pretty confindent that thier skills of stealth coud get them there unseen.
Its the rest of the crew that would pose the approach unseen challenge.
No one can see or hear anything that puts you on alert. All is quiet on the western front.

Please note Ethani used a wand to heal all Party members to full in the morning, if needed. Wil Your HP header is odd, please explain your current HP being higher than your max

Toston whispers to Lornak, "Should we split up? If the rest of the group can't approach undetected perhaps we could get them to create a diversion, course if these buggers scamper at the first sign of trouble then maybe that is what we shouldn't do."

Toston uses the message spell to communicate with the rest of the group from where Lornak and him are, "Lornak and I could prolly get through without detection but how are we going to get the rest of you here?"

Lornak answers Toston, "I do not think that is a good idea. We know there is a trap inside the entrance. I think you and I should get just inside and disarm it while the rest stay here in the river bed." Lornak looks around at the group. "Once that is done the rest of you can follow."

Lornak looks to the skies. "We could wait til nightfall, but I'm thinking if we are quick enough that there should not be any problems. If you think that is not enough then we can set a diversion that is autonomous and get inside."

Has Gaffer seen other birds nearby?

If there have been at least a few he'll say, "I'll take a look, if I land on the tower, it will mean I haven't seen anyone, otherwise I'll come back." He'll take the form he can closest to the birds, or hawk otherwise, he has seen here, and attempt to fly inconspicuously around the nearby area, looking for any movement aside from their party. (Perception: 30)

If he hasn't seen any, he will instead say, "There doesn't seem to be much wildlife about, if other creatures avoid this place, I may stand out to much suddenly appearing above." He nods instead at Lornak's suggestion.

Dušan catches his breath and sits down on log. The hiking took more out of him then he cared to admit. It was all he could do to just keep moving forward. Slapping himself in the forehead for not thinking of it earlier, Dušan casts Threefold Aspect on himself. Placing a silver crescent on the back of his hand and holding there, it bonds to his skin almost like a tatoo. As he stands up, he suddenly appears slightly younger then Hmerrin.

Revigorated, Dušan joins the conversation, "I don't much like the idea of splitting up either? Did we decide if you got the proper scroll. Wil. It seems like the best case scenario would be getting that cast before they noticed us."

The group talks and Gaffer does a bit of bird spotting and spies none. As he thinks back on the days trek, he realizes that he has not seen any animals at all. Perhaps the proximity to Bone Tower, or the Witchfire is the cause. One thing is certain, Gaffer would be the only bird in the air.

With this in mind, Gaffer does not take to the air. The group moves forward down the riverbed and sets up at the nearest point. Once in place, Lornak, Toston and Wil make the move to the tower and surrounding ruins proper.

It is a quick dash from rock to patch of shade to bit of brush and moments later the trio arrive. Using the information provided by the Hound Archon, the ivy covered wall is located and now it is up to Wil to locate the trap and disarm it

Wil and Lornak carefully disarm the deadfall. The tripwire is found and neutralized.

In the time it takes to do that, it starts to rain lightly. Survival check DC15: Highlight to display spoiler: {The weather seems likely only to get worse.}

Moving out from the riverbed and following his friends forward, Gaffer looks for tracks. He sees that this former outpost, almost entirely in ruins, is very much in bad shape. The one outbuilding that still has walls standing has no roof or second floor, so it provides no shelter, were one to seek it within the walls. The attached tower is also in ruins, and looks ready to tumble down were one so foolish as to attempt to scale it.

In the gloom and rain, not to mention the exposure to the elements, Gaffer sees no footprints. There are enough old flagstones and rocky patches that he thinks a resident could be careful not to leave any, were that desired.

Toston sees that beyond the deadfall, within the walls of the building with no roof, there is a sloping door, like a cellar door, that opens out and likely then down. There is vegetation hiding the door, but that did not fool Toston's keen sight.

Toston, Gaffer, Wil, and Lornak are at the deadfall looking into the ruined building.

60 ft back in the old riverbed, Hmerrin lays low and keeps watch with Asteria.

With them, Dusan and Ethani ready wands.

Lornak feels proud of himself as he helps Wil disarm the deadfall. Fighting that apparition was pretty ineffectual. Once finished he wordlessly slaps Wil's shoulder and points to the Toston, alerting the man to Toston's seemingly concerned face. He then trains his eyes to where Toston is looking.

That is our next step. He waves the rest of the group to make it to where he is so that they can avoid any more rain.

He then moves into the ruined building.

Wil dropped any equipment in his hands due to the shoulder smack from Lornak. Some of the items fell a little harder then they should of.. Wil smiles to himself.
"That was awesome. We need to find more traps... bring on the next one. So this place has seen better days. This door will not open by itself," Wil says as he picks up his tools and whatever trap material he can. He proceeds down into the hole.

Just to recap: The deadfall was in front of an old ruined building. Then INSIDE the building you found a cellar door.

The entire group gathers at the now-safe deadfall, looking into the building.

Gaffer and Dusan detect for magic, but find none.

Wil and Lornak step into the building. They can see clearly where if you move away a shrubbery, the door is easily accessible. Clearly SOMEONE put that shrubbery there in an effort to hide the cellar door from the casual eye.

Wil looks for additional traps but sees none. Only he and Lornak are in the building right now.

Lornak watches as the rest of the group gathers. He speaks softly; "We might run into cramped quarters down there." He points to the cellar door that Wil is investigating. "Move slow and watch for each other."

He moves over to the door and assists Wil in looking for further traps(Trap Sense). As the group starts down he suggests a marching order; "Wil and Toston first, then Hmerrin and Dusan." He looks around. "Then Ethani and Asteria. Gaffer and I will bring up the rear."

Toston uses his wand of mage armor to grant himself an armor bonus, and then casts Toros Taur Try opting for the Wemic version and then follows Lornak's instruction, leading the way. Toston feels super stealthy between the potion and the spell.

Toston and Dusan prep with Mage Armor. Ethani buffs Asteria.

Wil cracks a joke and pulls away the shrubbery, revealing the cellar door. Gaffer and Hmerrin are close behind. Wil seems about to open it ...

... but Toston says, STOP. There is a mechanical trap that he notices! It looks like when you open the door, a pit opens in front of the door. If not for his keen eyes, maybe half the party might have fallen for the trap, figuratively and literally!

The trap is still a danger, and you have not opened the cellar door!

Gaffer stumbles over himself at the sudden stop but lets out a breath of relief.
"Are you able to disarm this one too?"

He thinks for a moment of summoning a creature to move ahead of them but quickly thinks better of it, setting off traps is best avoided overall, and the idea doesn't sit quite right anyway.

Under the door is a small dark room; the walls have been repaired somewhat and vegetation pulled over to form a roof. A hole drops down 15’ to a granite floor. You would have to pass an acrobatics DC15 check to jump down safely.

Beyond, there is a cramped passage or tunnel with a low ceiling.

He then positions himself at the edge of the"room" below him, lowers himself down and hangs there a bit with his hands and then drops silently to the bottom (Acrobatics, d20 nat 20, 18 to confirm)

When her time comes to go down in the hole, Ethani hops down with grace, landing light on her feet. (Acro-17). She smiles at Lornak, glad to see he made it through the hole with ease as well. Focusing her energies, she casts Status on Asteria and Lornak so that she can easily tell their status even if they are seperated. She curses herself for not preparing more copies of the spell for the others.

But the party passes the cellar door and enters the sub-basement together. Before you is a long dark tunnel. The passage is cramped, with no lights, and anyone over 5’ must stoop to walk.

Proceeding carefully, probably checking for traps, you pass 70 feet along. Your light sources suggest the passage opens into a chamber 30 feet up ahead. What do you do?

Lornak steps into the marching order careful not to hit his head on the low ceiling as the group makes it way through the tunnel. Gaffer looks to the floor to see what the stone may tell. He findds the granite flagons quite tight lipped
Ethani, wand of Bulls Strength in one hand and a Wand of Shield of Faith in the other, casts the latter on Lornak

Toston takes the required 3 rouinds of concentration oto make his way though the spell. He filters out his fellow heroes, but then
encounters resistance to his spell. However he is able to overcome it, piercing a faint abjuration that was lying on top of a faint evocation.
The closer inspection from the doorway by several members of the group have answered one of the questions. What are the large stone objects in teh room. Almost
assuredly, they are sarcoughagi. The compound auras meeted out by Toston are laid about them.

The party is standing outside of a 20x30 with 4 stone sarcoughagi. Your light shows the walls to be irregular instead of smooth. Soot and Ash cover much of the room and the sarcoughagi

After a short pause of looking at the sarcophagi, she whispers "I hate to waste it, but I could send a wave of positive energy into the room if you want. It would probably flush out any undead and would definitely hurt them...if they are still in there."

He brings out his crossbow and nocks a bolt. "We send in Gaffer's hound to see if it routes anything. Ethani, have your shockwave at the ready. If it comes to a fight we lead with that. Front line fighters first then the rest follow."

Lornak watches as the hound moves about the room. Ready, he breathes in to steady himself, keenly aware of the constriction his chest cavity endures. He does his best to disengage from Toston.(Escape Artist d20=12) He is not entirely convinced that the room is safe but moves through the threshold regardless.

Wary of the runes upon the walls and keeps his senses peeled for any reaction as his person passes through. (perception d20=31)

Lornak moves into the room
Toston asks about summoning something that can read as that might be what sets off the runes in the room and he cautions Lornak to not read said runes

Hmerrin offers that the party could simply enter the room and Gaffer cautions on not spending too much time lingering and more time pressing on to find the fugitives, whom should be somewhere down here with you
Toston asks Lornak if a Protection from Fire spell would be appreciated
And Asteria also would like to move into the room, but she too, does not actually do so until the others have.

Lornak and the summoned hound are in the room. The soot and ash on the floor is old and must have been walked upon many times, as Lornak is not leaving any fresh prints in it. The Dark elf has already glanced at several runes, none explode and none are legible under the soot. He can see multiple recesses along the walls of the chamber and in 2 is an upright skeletal decaying figure. In the others, a small pile of remains and bones. A small stand of sorts can be seen in the indentations and Lornak can presume that these stands are what is holding the 2 figures upright. They simply have not decayed enough to fall apart, as the others have.

The sharp eyed elf spies a partially concealed passage as well. The concealment is one of the still standing skeletal figures.Thus far Lornak has stayed relatively clear of the 4 stone sarcophagi and from that vantage point, he cannot spy what may lie within them, as there walls are too high to allow

Lornak admires the craftsmanship and care someone took to preserve the remains within this crypt. He assumes the standing skeletons were honor guards of some type buried alongside their charge. Noble. Not a way I would want to go though...

He does his best to maneuver along the wall towards where he sees the continuence of the passage. He signals to his companions what he sees by pointing to the standing skeleton. If we can continue unabated we might be able to take out quarry unawares.

"I think it best we stay away from them, Kid." Lornak "Stick to the walls." He says. "Just keep out a weather eye."

As he approaches the hidden passage he watches for traps. "I see no evidence that our quarry have moved through here. I believe we are on an alternate route to their inner chambers...." Lornak continues. "...hence the caution."

Hmerrin asks for the Protection from Energy spell and Toston casts it, protecting the young fighter from Fire. The group enters the room, Hmerrin stepping over to a sarcophagus and peering in. You really got to get your lean on to see to the bottom, but when he finally does, it is with a sigh to confirm it is empty. As are all of them. Tomb raiders cleared out the valuables sometime ago it would seem.

Lornak has confirmed a passage behind one of the skeletal figures and Wil moves up to examine the area for traps. He finds nothing amiss in the passage, about the skeleton or the entry. Toston runs through a quick to do list.

Before pushing past the skeleton, Toston renews the Wemic Toros Taur Try spell on himself and then casts the Minotaur version on Wil

Ethani taps Hmerrin with a Bull Strength spell from her wand

The group moves down the corridor, just over 80' The walls are roughly hewn, cold and slightly damp and there is no trace os light, save what the party in
producing. DM is curious on what that light might be? All in all, it is a fairly clausterphobic experience. The corridor comes
to an end at an iron door. It opens outwards and shows signs of rust and age, except for the hinges. Wil's sharp eyes and a sense for what to look for, spies yet another trap.
There is a bypass built in and Wil thinks he can engage it. Disable Traps

Lornak touches the walls as the group moves through the passage, feeling the pits and stones of rough chisel. He wonders if this is simply practical work or if it is new. (Knowledge take 10)

As they reach the iron door any suspicion about whether or not this is a direct route to their quarry is waylay-ed as the hinges detail recent use. "Someone's been through here." Lornak says in a low voice. "Looks like this is the direct route."

I Knew I should have put myself up front... Lornak is a little restless as Wil does his work.

Wil cannot work at all without light and so Dusan casts Dancing Lights. The magical orbs illuminate
the corridor nicely and with them, Wil is able to detect and bypass the trap.

The Trap is defeated and all that lies before you now is an iron door which shows signs of recent use. Wil does not believe the door to be locked.

Ethani walks in her assigned position, trying to stay as quiet as possible. She lends her gem of brightness as needed, though she is more than willing to keep ahold of it herself.

As they wait, Ethani mentally checks the timing of the buff spells she cast from her wand and refreshes with the wand as needed.

Once the decision is made to open the door, Ethani readies a Sanctuary spell, wanting to be prepared for a fight if their are enemies behind it.
