A countdown room, a friendly ghost, and shadows

DM Mitch/The Twins 43/43
Monday October 18th, 2021 6:37:59 AM

Elron figures they should head in the only obvious direction.
Honor tells Justice that he’s a good horse and sends him off.
Mundhildur wants to experiment with the quiver. It has a space specifically for javelins and her longspears are close enough that it works. The tapestries are mirrors of the originals.
Asimov asks about Irony.

The party is ready to go and heads off through the door. They find on the other side a 40 foot long hallway. A rope hangs in the middle of the room, though what it hangs from is unclear as it goes through a small hole in the ceiling. It looks like there has been some sort of fire in here as the walls have scorch marks and there is ash mixed into the dust on the floor.

After the last of the party has entered the room the door slams shut behind them. A deep booming voice, loud to the point where you can feel the sound reverberate within your chest, speaks, calling out “10”.

Honor smiles at Asimov's question. "But Irony doesn't poop on the floor," she says. "Justice is a very smart, very good horse, but he's still a horse. And Camel is still a camel."

Now, in the hallway, Honor looks around at the rope and the scorch marks. "I'm no expert," she says, "but this looks an awful lot like a trap. Thoughts?"

Elron thinks this is a trap and doesn't want to be trapped when the countdown ends. There's a suspiciously unburned rope among all this, and he is the smallest of the group, so. . . how small is that small hole in the ceiling?

Elron heads over to the rope, but does not put any weight on it yet. He wants to see what's up there, though.

Asimov says, "Scorchmarks on the floor, reverberating voice calling out '10', unless I miss my guess this is some kind of fire trap unless we take some kind of action"

Asimov approaches the rope and uses his mechanical trap finding skills to examine it and hopefully whatever it is anchored to given a better vantage point.

Details requested:
"They find on the other side a 40-foot long hallway. A rope hangs in the middle of the room."

Aside from its 40' length, what is the width of the hallway/room (or does the hallway lead into a room?). What is the height of the ceiling? If it is a hallway that leads into a room, what are the dimensions of the room, as well? If the hallway does not lead into a room, is a door at the far end? Mundhi checks to see if there is an obvious, or hidden, or secret door...

How large is the opening through which the rope hangs? Mundhildur has rope, grappling hooks, two spikes left over, and other tools which may or may not be useful. Of what material are the walls, ceiling, floors made? Assuming stone for the floor, which has been the general rule so far.

The Twins freeze in place.
Honor points out Irony doesn't poop. She thinks the rope is a trap of some sort.
Elron looks at the hole and ceiling.
Asimov really wants to know what the rope is attached to and what kind of mechanical trap it might be connected to.
Zeoll inspires people to be more awesome.
Mundhildur more closely inspects the room.

The rope is fairly skinny, about an inch across. The hole in the roof is exactly the right size for it, so also about an inch. The hallway is 15 feet wide. There may be a room on the other side of the hallway, but a thick stone door blocks your path. The door behind you, also of thick stone, closed and locked behind you once you all entered.

The booming voice speaks. ”9”

He still a little concerned that the rope might be the trigger to the trap, which this still might be. "Someone should also try th'otha' door," he points out. If it can be opened before the voice reaches one, that might be a good thing.

Asimov says, "The way I see it there could be options here but with Zeoll's mention of climbing maybe there is 4. Option 1 - the count down is a bluff and nothing happens at 0, if we pull the rope that sets off the firetrap. Option 2 - the count down is meant to for us to do something before the time reaches 0 and that thing is pull the rope. Option 3 - same as option 2 but we need to pull the rope the number of times the count is currently on to disarm the trap. Option 4 - same as option 2 only instead of pulling the rope we need to climb it and do something at the ceiling level. Zeoll seems to be favoring climing it I am partially trained in climbing so I guess I could try that and maybe my weight on it would count as a pull so we kill two birds with one stone."

Asimov tries his hand at climbing the rope (Climb : 8; I'm guessing no dice)

The Twins gawk with everyone else.
Honor tries the far door. It doesn’t budge.
Mundhildur tries to judge the ceiling height. It’s about 20 feet.
Zeoll suggests someone try to climb the rope.
Elron volunteers to climb, but waits until someone’s tried the door first.
Asimov wonders if pulling on the rope might get them all killed in a fiery inferno. Or if not pulling it might. He decides to just try to climb it himself.

Asimov has some difficulty but he’s able to get on the rope if not climb up to the roof. Nothing happens.

Zeoll suggests they try the doors.
Honor suggests someone more capable of figuring out how to open the door come look at it.
Elron obliges and goes to help Honor
Asimov climbs the rope to the top.

The door is featureless, with no clear way of opening it. A thorough search shows no blemishes that could be a hidden catch or mechanism of some sort.

Asimov gets to the top of the rope. He looks at the hole in the roof just big enough for the rope to come out of. It is a hole. It is just big enough for the rope. There is nothing else remarkable about it.

The booming voice repeats, ”10”

"Well, I'm out of ideas." Honor steps back from the door. She's a little lost. She's not a rogue; she doesn't know about traps. She's not especially good at noticing things. He calls down to the others, "If it is all the same to you I think I'll stay up here for now. My weight seems to be sufficient to pause the count down at 10 and I'm left thinking looking at the scorch marks that letting the count down reach zero is what cause the fiery death trap so I'll hold the line for now. There is nothing up here so I guess we wait to see if Zeoll's attempt does anything before regrouping?"

Mundhildur follows Zeoll's lead. If she cannot reach the door while holding the end of the suspended rope, she shall add to the lead, by using a joining knot to add to the length of the rope Asimov is holding onto - from the bottom part of it, of course. Then touching the door.

If that resolves nothing, she will look over the door, press here, see if there is anything to hold onto (a knob? a lever? some other sort of handle).

The door through which we entered: Did it open inwards into this room, or away, sweeping through the room we came from?

If there is nothing obvious or easily discoverable to pull upon, she will then see what result pushing may have - first gently, then with increasing force.

DM Mitch/The Twins 43/43
Friday October 22nd, 2021 7:28:39 AM

Honor is out of ideas.
Zeoll tries to haul the rope towards the door. The room is 40 feet long and the rope isn’t anywhere close to long enough. Also he has to drag Asimov’s weight the whole way, which is probably very tiring.
Elron gets mad and shoves the door. It is as solid as stone, because it is stone, and doesn’t move.
Asimov decides to stay on the rope for now.
Munhildur adds her height and reach to the rope test. Still nowhere close. Both doors are plain stone and slid into place, like a star trek door. There is nowhere to grip to try to force them back into their slots and poking every surface of the door and doorframe does nothing.

The booming voice, once dramatic, now not so much, announces ”10”

OOC:

If the corridor is 40 ft long, and the rope is in the center, then the rope is maybe 20 ft from the two doors. Or 25 ft from one and 15 from the other.

And the rope is 15 ft long, seeing as the ceiling is 15 ft up. So I figured with an armspan of 6-10 ft., that might be enough to hold the rope in one hand and touch the door with the other. If not the one door, then the other.

Zeoll calls up, "Asimov, get down frrom therre forr a minute."

The ceiling is 20' high, rather than 15', thus the rope is likely 20' from opening to the floor. The room is 15' wide. If 20' long, it could reach to just barely touch the wall above either of the doors if pulled taut along the ceiling. At an angle directed to the bottom of either door the end would reach to within 8.3 feet of the door bottom. So Mundhi could hold one end, and touch the bottom of the door with room to spare (assuming her 'wingspan' (fingertip to fingertip) should be about 10-1/2 feet). And, if extended toward the top of the sliding stone door (let's say the top is at 10 feet), then the end of the rope would come within less than 2-1/2 feet of the door top.

Since Zeoll wants Asimov to descend the rope, M heads over to spot him, and catch him should he slip and fall.

Asimov climbs down the rope, letting go reluctantly and says, "Okay but if we let this thing get down to zero and we all die in a fiery manner my ghost gets to say I told you so to the rest of you."

He then uses his door detecting device to look for secret doors.

The door detecting device creates 60 foot cone shape emanation that lasts as long as Asimov is concentrating on the device up to 5 minutes. The first round tells him the presence or absence of secret doors. The second realm he is aware of the number of secret doors and the location of each. If a door is outside of his line of sight he knows it is there but not its exact location. Each additional round Asimov can learn the trigger or unlocking mechanism for a secret door closely examined by him. Each round Asimov can turn to detect secret doors in a new area. The effect can penetrate some barriers but is blocked by 1 foot of stone, 1 inch of common metal, a thin sheet of lead, or 3 feet of wood or dirt. Asimov searches from one end of the hallway to another using his device. If he gets too far from the rope and the count gets too close to 0 he will pull the rope before it can reach there.

"Asimov, I left most of my pitons back in the troll pit area," Mundhildur answers.

Mundhi lays out her inventory:
3 large-sized woolen blankets
8 medium-sized woolen blankets
30'x6' canvas
"So, let's put the woolen blankets about us. Then wrap us all with an outer covering of canvas. Sure, it might all catch a-fire, but wrap in a way you can toss it off quickly if need be.

"If the outer layer catches fire, and we toss it fire-side down on the floor, that may smother it before all is burned. The wool's thickness can help protect from heat." She takes a large woolen blanket for Zeoll, another one for Bill the Camel, and the third for herself. The medium-sized blankets are likely suitable for the rest of the party members. Unless someone is able to summon water, Mundhildur cannot figure out how to dampen all. But she does think they should at least dampen the woolen blanket for Elron. "Those feathers, as you mentioned, likely will easily burn - so you should have the greatest protection. We should protect well those who can tell us stories, for so we honor the tale tellers of our people."

She wraps herself with the large woolen blanket, then practices tossing it away. She recommends the rest try this, too, before the countdown reaches 1, or less. If need be, perhaps they will reset it one time to ensure all have the insulation protection figured out and practiced at least once. The 30' long, 6' wide canvas she wraps around the group, having someone hold one end. "Anyone in the middle may be the best protected, or best smothered," she posits.

Shrinking down to 7'4" will allow more of her body to be protected. This she does. Wool around each, canvas around all, including some to shield from above if possible, and standing in the middle of the room, within reach of the rope. Mundhi will be part of the circumference, rather than enmeshed in the middle of the group. "Squeeze together. Be ready to shed the blankets after the fire comes. If no fire, but just heat, it may be good to keep the wool on for longer. AND - someone may want to run to the far door if it opens, and make sure it does not shut on us."

"Is every body ready?" she asks, emphasizing 'body'.

The passage is much like the last. Stone tiled floor, walls and ceiling with no torch sconces. Unlike the previous tunnel, this one has scratch marks all throughout the passage. Something has clawed at every surface. It’s unclear if it was trying to get in. Or worse, out.

Ahead of you, the entire passage starts to fill with wispy white smoke, before taking on numerous forms. Mya is the first you can see, but behind her are a dozen or so other ghostly drow children. All girls, and all wearing the same white dress.

She looks at the scratch marks. She checks to see how deep the marks are, how many are found in parallel; to discern if there is a discernible arc to the marks, or if they follow a straight line. To see the range of lengths of the scratches. Do they stop at a certain height along the wall? By 'all surfaces' - does that signify that they also are on the ceiling?

Mundhi takes out her stone and resharpens her main long spear. Once that is done, she sharpens her second long spear. And next her dagger. "Sharp cuts deeper."

Yes, Could we have a full description of the room? In the description of the scratches, we now know they are a few centimeters in depth, and are on walls, ceiling, and floor. But how long are they? A few centimeters in length? A meter or more? Are they all singular scratches, not obviously in parallel to others? Or are they two or more engraved at the same time? Are they perfectly straight, or is there an arc to them? Mundhi pays attention to these details, as she is trying to discern what sort of creature, or creatures, made them, with what sort of claws or instruments. Do they look spider-made? Or tiger-made? Or bear-made? Or who-knows-what made?

Zeoll says don’t worry we’ll take care of it.

The ghost girl smiles as Elron figures it out and has the good sense to keep his voice down, then everyone starts blabbing the information at full volume and all the ghosts start to look really nervous.

The Twins point out the lack of encounters since the party retreated out of the dungeon and returned.

Unlike the other constructed rooms, this room is more cavern like. The walls look to be polished crystal of some kind, and reflect light well. The cavern is filled with hundreds of stalactites and stalagmites made of brittle crystal. Amongst the crystal formations are a few drow bodies. Their bones are littered with crystals that punctured their mortal frames. Remarkably, they look very fresh. They could have died only moments ago.

Zeoll says a prayer and looks for magic. The entire area glows with auras and the bones look way to intact to have been sitting here for extended periods. Probably some sort of preservation spell is active, like in the room with the dopplegangers.
Asimov thinks the bodies probably count as significant.

The party soon learns that the admonishment to be quiet had nothing to do with alerting the enemy. As they chat and approach the sound of their voices set off several crystals which explode into razor sharp shards that hit everything around them. Luckily the party is just out of range, but those look painful to be hit by. The crystals seem to already be regrowing.

Honor comments they’ll have to move through quietly and it’ll be difficult for her.
Elron suggests clearing out the crystals before advancing.
Zeoll thinks it’s a good idea and times how long it takes the crystals to regenerate.
Asimov doesn’t think Irony is capable of being quiet enough. He helps with the timing.
Mundhildur thinks it’s a good plan and suggests cover options.

The party spends several minutes figuring things out. This room is more of a big, oval shaped cavern then a hallway, so from the door the angles aren’t right to clear the entire room. The Twins can clear out a path to about the halfway mark in a minute, and it takes roughly two minutes for them to grow back (it seems semi-random). A loud spell fired ahead of the party might clear them more quickly. It’s about 130 feet to the exit.

For once, a map is provided!

"Yes, Honor, do the little you can, and I will bear you back. Zeoll, can you carry Asimov, or can Bill the Camel?" she asks.

After Honor restores some of her drained strength, she bears the armored warrior woman across. If additional singing is needed to safely re-cross the cavern, she will sing forth loudly. If not, she crosses as silently as she might. Then back through the doorways, and to the last place of safety.

Once back in the room, she spends time removing any crystal shards from blankets, and piling them in one area. "I am glad I brought blankets to this place." She double checks the blankets after going through them once. She she makes beds for people who need care - especially for Asimov and Irony, for whom she lays an extra layer of padding.

Forgot to add +2 from healing kit (am running low: have, after this, 7 applications from the kit) gives 19. If someone can make a healing skill check of 10 or more, then the score would rise to 21. However, for her purposes, only a 15 is needed, so the giantess's ministrations are effective.

With 8 hours of rest and treatment, 2 strength points can be restored per person. WIth a full day's rest, 4 strength points can be recovered. WE will likely need to be here for 3 days, or 2 and a half days.

Hit point restoration? 2 hit points per level (that is, 10 hp) for a full 8 hours of rest in a day, or 4 hit points per level (that is, 20 hp) for each full day of complete rest;

"That room reminds me of a story I heard about th' dwarven mines in north-east Falador. Never been there myself but my cousin used t' work there -- he would tell them when th' air was gittin' bad. Paid well for not doin' much, he said. Couldn't even do any minin' himself, 'cause it might distract him from th' things he was there t' notice. Anyways. . .

About thirty years ago, shortly after sunrise an' less than an hour after th' miners had entered th' castle gate t' th' mine, there was a huge explosion through the tunnels, collpsin' the entrance t' th' mine. What happened -- an' we'll get t' how they figured this out in a bit -- but what happened is that th' foreman's sunrod warn't workin' an' when he went t' light th' lantern that he carried as a backup, th' flame from his tindertwig ignited some gas, and -- well, th' mine was a dusty place, and it all just went up with a mighty FOOP! The first explosion blew out all th' other lights, by th' way. That's why there was a second explosion. This one shook th' mountain and collapsed th' tunnel.

There were one-hundert-seventy-one men in th' mine -- forty-five beastfolk, fifty dwarves, twenty-five humans, thirty-two half-elves, twelve half-orcs, and a handful o' gnomes an' halflin's. Altogether they had four-hundert-fifteen children. Th' king o' Falador aged ten years with worry th' moment he heard about the disaster -- an not just because th' kingdom would have four-hundert-fifteen new orphans, though t' his credit that was the main thing. He sent his personal guard t' join the rescue workers that had been hastily assembled at th' mine site. Th' neighborin' kingdoms also sent men t' help, 'cause they all relied on minin' and knew it could have been their own in there.

The rescue workers came from all the surrounding areas t' recover th' bodies -- several dyin' themselves in th' attempt. An' their wives came, and cooked for bereaved families, tended children, helped where they could. It took nine days t' find everyone. All th' while, th' anguished, grieving wives and children waited to hear whether their husbands and fathers had been found.

But in th' end, it turned out everyone was okay. Despite the collapse o' several tunnels, an' being days without food -- but not, fortunately, entirely without water -- everyone was able t' recover. The explosion caused nothin' but miner injuries."

She takes strides toward him, then begins to chase him about, but after a few laps slows her chase, and her shoulders begin to shake, and she snorts - this is likely the first time any in the group has heard the giantess snort - and then is overcome in gales of laughter as she collapses cross-legged onto the scarred floor of their safe room. Zeoll enjoys the shaggy-dog story. As any druid would!

He helps people rest and recover. He's doing fine, himself. He and Bill the Camel also stand guard and watch.

(OOC: Asimov has an effective Strength score of 6.)

He puts his pack down and says to Honor, "I am significantly weakened myself though not as bad as you are. Sadly I have no means currently to aid in my own recovery. How often can you cast that spell that let you regain strength? I fear I'm going to need it too. Taking stock of my device designs I think the only thing that may help me are an undead disrupting ray gun, a special item of luggage calls a carry all that triples my limited carrying capacity and a personal forcefield. I already wear armor yes, but were I to use the force shield it being made out of force I believe would confer additional protection against the touch attacks of shadow creatures. I get that 2 of those things are only useful when fighting the creatures but the carry-all since it can stay together 10 hours without breaking could allow me to press on without being fully recovered though in my condition if I take another hit like the one I took, I will be effectively paralyzed."

The Twins appreciate the story. They like hearing stories of different cultues.

The party rests, tells stories, and discusses how long it will take to recover from the recent attack.

While the party recovers, Elron ponders. "We left one o' those things there, an' it'll be recoverin' too. But it may have decided that we -- meanin' Miss Honor -- are more than it can take. We know how t' get through th' room now. But I think I'm gonna have my chicken saber already in hand th' next time we do."

Mundhildur has said she can speed folks' recovery, and Elron will follow her directions and try to help -- since he can't help Honor with her spells. (Heal = 13 to aid another)

"Asimov, I can help, too, if you'll allow me. You simply take it easy and rest. It might take a few days, but we'll get your strength back up, along with Honor's help, perhaps, too." Mundhildur uses her healing skills to attend to her two weakened friends. As indicated Nov 22, each person she tends for will regain 4 ability [edit, originally had written 'hit'] points per 24 hours.

"I can cast two spells per day," Honor replies. "Once I rest, I can make both my spells Lesser Restoration. Today I only had the one prepared."

After a full day's rest, Honor has regained 4 points of strength thanks to Mundhildur's care. She casts her two spells--one on herself, and one on Asimov. She heals one point of strength; Asimov heals 2.

[OOC: Mundhildur's post says "hit points," but the same rule applies to ability damage; I checked.]

After two full days of rest, Asimov should be completely recovered. Honor casts two more spells, and is also completely recovered.

We can leave at that point, after two full days, or we can wait an additional day for Honor to get spells again.

The party rests until fully recovered. Fortunately whatever perils await don’t seem to wander the halls and they are unmolested for the duration. The Twins at one point go back to assure the drow the party is still alive and working on the problem.

Honor strides out of the room with confidence. "Of course, we're going to have to bring down those stalactites again," she says. "But we know how to do it now, so it should be fine."

Elron agrees with Honor. Despite the Twins assurances that the shadows were defeated, he carries the double chicken saber instead of his whappin' stick, so he doesn't drum on Honor's shield this time. If more volume is needed than the others provide, he adds his singing voice.

Asimov changes his device preparations around. He swaps out freeze ray for undead disrupting ray gun
and door detector for the personal force field. He also prepares 2 medihaler mediums and 1 rapid repair nanobot capsule versus 2 rapid repair nanobot capsule and 1 medihaler medium.

He says, "If we face more shadows they won't like my new raygun. I can also use my force field to help deter their attacks."

He stands ready to bang on Irony again when they get closer to the stalagtites.

Devices prepared
thingamabobs: corrosive pistol, undead disrupting ray gun, magic detector, light emitter
weird science creation (2 0th level effects): corrosive pistol + undead disrupting ray gun = range touch; 1d3 acid + 1d6 positive energy vs undead on succesful hit;

"Onward, then, with courage, Asimov's toys, renewed strength, full bellies from berries, and leaving odd smells behind, crystals ahead, and freedom for captured spirits," Mundhildur intones as they retrace their steps, and with loud singing as they come again into the crystal cavern.

"Meanwhile, ought we to check the remains of the poor people earlier slain by the crystals?" As they traverse the glinting floor, she does so with the bodies of the drow left slain.

Each corpse left behind she also carries to the far side of the cavern. If necessary, she will toss a loop or two of rope around them to assist in the carry. "Whoever they were, in due course, we ought to see to a decent burial for them." But, sure, she will take things of value for later distribution.
