Wilford Grimly(Matt S.) (HP:106/106- AC: 26; Touch: 15; Flat: 27; CMD: 23)
Monday April 17th, 2023 3:54:20 PM

(OOC: being honest, just noticed Wind Wall requires some extra items, I need to acquire. sorry I missed them.)
Wil is barely able to make out anything. He knows the Wind Wall is on his right and Volsuqelx is ahead of him. I imagine there is enough light to make out its position. He summons a lantern archon (Shadow) and asks her to light something ahead with continual flame. Wil waits till the Archon appears to begin moving forward using her as an obstruction. Both Wil and the archon stay by the wall but far enough away to avoid it.

Fort Save = 22, will save = 25

Kiwina manages to avoid the rays the creature sends his way, for now at least. He responds by casting a spell at the beholder area -- faerie fire. (Miss percentage = 90, success)

Kiwina then moves to the opposite side of the beholder from Rolth, preparing a trident as he moves so that he has two weapons now.

Ayotnom Ogini Hugh C 87/87 | AC : 25; Touch 19; Flat 19 CMD 28(30 vs Trip, Grapple or Disarm)
Monday April 17th, 2023 9:46:53 PM

(OOC: I'm confused. Is not there a back door that goes directly to the warehouse and avoids the guards? I was trying for that door. The way the map looks it looks like there are guards which lead to an alley where the entrance to the warehouse is or is that a corridor inside the warehouse?)

Ayotnom doesn't know what to do. He'll never get to help his friends fighting the beholder if he has to deal with the guards outside. He thought he could bypass them by heading to the door leading directly into the warehouse. If there isn't any other way to get in he'll continue moving that way, but he doesn't really see how he'll ever join the ongoing fight.

Falco moves up and casts Blindness again on the beholder. This time the beholder blinks out just as his spell is cast. (50% miss chance on targeted spells, rolled 47.)
Elyas teleports to Rolth and casts Fly on the liontaur.
Mak shoots several arrows, but only one hits (AC 29) for 26 points of damage.
Wil begins summoning a shadowy Lantern Archon. (Casting Time 1 Round, so he did not move and the Lantern Archon will not be there until the start of his next turn.)
Kiwina casts Faerie Fire on the beholder, limning the creature in a pale glow.
Rolth leaps into the air to charge the beholder. He is a flurry of attacks, but only one attack hits for 9 damage. (AC 29.) (Also, if Roth is choosing to hover in the air so he can attack the beholder, he will need to succeed on a DC 15 fly check, right? Did I miss something? If you fail the hover check you have to move.)
Ayotnom is desperate to join his friends. He realizes that the passwall was actually open. (Sorry if the map or the DM posts were confusing. I tried to be clear about this in my posts, and I added some notes to the map. Feel free to assume Ayotnomm was back to the passwall area and come in from there if you wish. Or go deal with the guards if you wish instead. It’s all good.)

Elyas and Tsak each take 3 more points of damage from the stings they suffered.

The jelly’s attack.
Jelly f1 moves toward Tsak.
Jelly f2 moves toward Wil.
Jelly f3 moves 5’ to attack Elyas, stinging him for 2 points of damage.
Jelly f4 attacks Rolth, stinging him for 1 point of damage.
Jelly f5 moves up to attack Rolth, but it only succeeds in getting rid of his last image.
Jelly f6 comes close to Mak and sprays him (hits touch AC 25). Mak must make a DC 19 Fort save or become nauseated for 5 rounds; otherwise, he is sickened for 5 rounds.

The beholder moves 5’. He’s not as talkative now.
One beam hits Kiwina - Make a DC 20 Will save or be Charmed as Charm Person.
One beam hits Kiwina - Make a DC 20 Will save or be asleep.
One beam hits Elyas - Make a DC 20 Fort save or be turned to stone.
One beam hits Mak - Make a DC 20 Fort save or be disintegrated for 80 points of damage, or 23 if he succeeds.
One beam misses Mak.
One beam misses Falco.
One beam hits Falco - Make a DC 20 Will save or be hurtled up against the ceiling for 4 points of damage, and then fall 40’ for an additional 13 damage.
One beam hits Rolth - Make a DC 20 Will save or be affected by a personal Slow spell.
One beam hits Rolth - Make a DC 20 Fort save or take 130 points of damage, or 22 if he succeeds as per Finger of Death.

Status:
Elyas - stung (not sickened)
Rolth - stung (not sickened)
Tsak - Sickened (2/5 rounds, -2 penalty on all attack rolls, weapon damage rolls, saving throws,
skill checks, and ability checks.)

—---------------------------------------------
Lighting is tricky, so let me clarify. Anything highlighted in yellow is a lightsource, both those Continual Flame torches and the open Passwall are providing 20’ of normal light, and another 20’ of dim light. Double that if you have low-light vision. Remember that counting squares means every diagonal direction counts as 1.5 square.

Dim Light: In an area of dim light, a character can see somewhat. Creatures within this area have concealment (20% miss chance in combat) from those without darkvision or the ability to see in darkness.
Darkness: In areas of darkness, creatures without darkvision are effectively blinded.
Characters with darkvision can see lit areas normally as well as dark areas within 60 feet. A creature can’t hide within 60 feet of a character with darkvision unless it is invisible or has cover.

The ceiling is 40’ high. There is debris on the floor that makes some of the area encumbered terrain where noted - pieces of crates, old bones, trash, etc. You now know the pungent, acrid stench is from these jellyfish-like creatures.

When you post, be sure to note what spells you have cast that affect others and that affect you so I don’t miss that. I cannot take into account effects that I don’t see listed.

Here is your map.

(OOC Tsak is sickened but is going to continue to act. I am assuming that the sickened status (-2) and the Inspired status (+2) cancel each other out so he has a +1 to attack from Rolth's bless and that is that.)

One of the floating jellyfish swooped down and sprayed Mak with some kind of noxious substance, but Mak threw up an arm at the last moment and managed to block most of it. Having only a hint of a whiff of the foul smelling gunk. He was distracted momentarily but the black ray that shot out of an eyestalk got his attention. Instinctively Mak knew that wasn't good and wrenched his body to one side in an effort to avoid the ray as it sliced through a leg. Had the beam been allowed to linger it almost certainly would have cost him that limb, but his quickness prevented any catastrophic damage.

Mak's bravery only went so far, but his fear was for his friend that was flying next to the great beast. He loaded two arrows and fired them. They left the bow side by side as the second quick shot zipped through the beast as it blinked out for a moment. The last two simply went wide.

Elyas has to burn through more of the good will in the universe that he has saved up to resist the magic eye beam.
Fort save = 12. reroll with a hero point for a 21

Well that wasn't very nice! see how you like that!

Elyas returns the favor by casting Flesh to Stone on the beholder
miss chance = 94, success. Beholder needs a DC 24 fort save or turn to stone

If the beholder turns to stone Elyas will end his turn there. if it resists, he will follow it up by using the last daily cast from his metamagic rod casting a quickened Scorching Ray
3 rays
Ray 1: 30 to hit vs Touch, critical threat. 26 vs touch to confirm. 95 miss chance, 15 damage, 29 if critical
Ray 2: 30 to hit, another critical threat. only 13 to confirm, 20 on miss chance (success because of see invisibility). 15 damage, 31 if critical
Ray 3: 16 to hit vs touch, 5 on miss chance, misses.

Elyas then moves back away from the Beholder a bit.

Rolth growls with annoyance as the floating jelly sandwich pricks him, distracting him from dodging the incoming rays. The first ray hits, and he feels a little lethargic, but the rage and Domi's protection answer when called and he shakes it off (consumed a Hero Point for a reroll, 2nd Will save = 20, success!)

The Finger of Death arrives next, but Rolth is familiar with this form of communication and is relatively unfazed. He gives a single digit salute in return before launching back to the attack! (FORT save = 34, success) (Fly check vs DC 15 to hover = 26, success!)

Ayotnom flies through the passwall taking a double move to get near the beholder and slightly above it.

Ayotnom is invisible so Stealth roll is 30

Ayotnom then heroically attacks the beholder with his rapier using the precise strike option. This will render Ayotnom visible again.

Aytonom misses with his first attack so he tries to heroically attack again but misses with that as well.

Be sure to track all these hero points you’re using.

Tsak shoots at the beholder the previous round, hitting it once for 4 damage. This round he strikes at the jellyfish-like creatures, but fails to hit (AC 29).
Falco moves to heal Rolth, but the liontaur is flying too far above Falco to reach.
Mak manages to avoid most attacks and shoots at the beholder, but his arrows bounce off the beholder’s tough hide.
Rolth hovers in the air, attacking the beholder and hitting it twice.
Wil summons a Lantern Archon. He instructs it to create a Continual Flame effect on something, but chimes back in its mystical language that it cannot do that as a summoned creature (please see the spell description for Summon Monster.) Then he creates a Spiritual Weapon near him, ready to use it to strike anything that comes near. (Note - Wil must direct it to attack something. It will not stand guard. Please see the spell description on this.)
Kiwina manages to resist the charming effect, but succumbs to the sleep.
Ayotnom bursts in. He charges toward the beholder, striking at it with his rapie though his blows miss.
Elyas calls on his heroic reserves to make his save, and fires a similar effect back at the beholder trying to turn it to stone.

Elyas takes 4 more points of damage from the previous sting, and Rolth takes 2 more damage from the previous sting.

Elyas’ spell proves to be effective. A momentary look of terror is made permanent as the beholder is transformed into stone! If falls with a deep thud, barely missing Rolth. As it does so, it rolls to the side a bit and three stone eyestalks snap off. You hear a tinkling sound as a ring falls off one of the broken eyestalks. You see two other rings as well.

Once the great Volsuqelx falls, you hear the jelly’s chattering in Aklo. Strangely, they withdraw from those they were attacking.

A brief moment of quiet ends as the door to the south suddenly bursts open! Four shadowy figures rush toward you. Clad in dark leathers, they’re moving unusually fast, though the debris slows them a bit.

One of them says, ”You’ll pay for what you’ve cost us. The guards are on their way. You mess with the Teeth, you get bit!”

Two reach Wil and attack him with Kukri knives but miss.

Two more move toward Tsak and Elyas. They each throw a shuriken, missing Tsak but hitting Elyas for 3 damage. As they fly through the air, you can see each shuriken is lit by Continual Flame, and they give off light where noted on the map.

Mak knew the beholder could likely be restored given enough potent magic, so he moved up next to it as his rapier appeared magically in his hand and swiped at the stone eye stalks with his admantium blade in an attempt to cut them off the stoned creature.

OOC:
A rapier actually has a cutting edge even though the fighting style uses lunges. Mak is trying to cut the beast apart in an attempt to deliver a coup de grace with his adamantine weapon. Otherwise this round he does 18-2(sickened) + 7(if its still evil) or 23 hp.

Stone, Hardness 8, 15 hp/in. of thickness

**Combat Reflexes, Admantium - Ignores Hardness < 20, Agile Weapon, Keen Weapon, *Holy Weapon(+2d6 v Evil), Weapon Finesse, Weapon Focus, Weapon Specialization, Bless, Inspiring Courage, Precise Strike, Mobility| Encumbrance:53 lbs| Move: 30 | DR1 (Adamantine Armor), Darkvision 3 hours, Sickened 3 Rounds | Condition: Sickened, Just a scratch | |

Edit: After some research I've discovered that a Beholder might not have a discernable anatomy, be immune to critical hits, and possible to coup de graces as well. Mak's attempts might end up being an effort to slice a large enough chunk off it to keep it from surviving a restoration to flesh. I'd actually suggest rolling it into the portable hole and dumping it in the ocean.

Tsak Rezar (Damien) AC22(22) (T15/F14) 112/113 HP| Falchion +4 2D4+3|Crossbow1 1D8+1 Status:Invisible, Sickened, Stung, Inspired

Tsak has no idea whether the stone beholder will come back to life or not, or what the flying jelly's will do. But there are new foes, and they're on the ground. He puts his crossbow away (noted on char sheet I used 7 bolts) and draws his sword, then waits for something to get in range. Charging doesn't seem like a good idea as his stomach is still threatening to jump out his mouth and the sting that stung is still stinging. Goodness knows what that is doing to him...

Elyas briefly celebrates when the Beholder falls down as a statue, but that is short-lived as new threats immediately appear and start attacking.

Since the beholder fell to the first spell, elyas held off on using his quickened fire spell. now seems like a good time to use it though!

He starts by casting a Chain Lightning over the largest group of enemies. Primary target is floating jellyfish f1. the lightning bounces between that jelly, f4, f5, S1, S2, and S4
[Each target needs a Reflex save for half damage. Primary target needs a DC 25 save, the others need a DC 23. full damage is 47 each]

He then uses the quickened rod to cast a scorching ray at the Slayer that threw something at him (S3)
3 rays burst from his hand towards the new enemy.
ray 1: 16 vs touch AC for 13 fire damage
ray 2: 18 vs touch AC for 17 fire damage
ray 3: natural 1, auto miss.

Seeing that Mak is making sure the beholder stays dead, he shouts, "Bring some of the eyestalks as a trophy!" Mak moves up to the stoned beholder and breaks off one eye stalk. He can break off one eyestalk per attack after this. There are six left, and Mak notices that two of those still have rings on them.
Tsak stowes his crossbow and draws his weapon, ready for an attack.
Elyas casts Chain Lightning at one of the jellys, and watches as it arcs to surrounding enemies. Then he casts a quickened Scorching Ray, focusing on one of the incoming assassins.
Falco calls down the power of his god in a column of righteous flame. That opponent lays dead and smoking on the floor.
Wil fires a hand crossbow at S2, hitting him for 2 points. Then he directs (move action) the spiritual weapon to also attack the man, and it strikes once for 6 points of damage. Wil’s use of a ranged weapon draws an AOO from S1 and S2. Wil is hit once for 6 damage.
Rolth wonders about the fleeing jellys. He tells Mak to bring an eyestalk, and then charges to attack S1. He tears into the man for lots of damage, killing him.
Kiwina lays there asleep, ready to trip any and all that would stumble across the prone centaur.
Ayotnom charges S3 and hits for 12 damage.

The remaining Jelly’s continue to Withdraw, floating silently out of the open passwall. f6 provokes an AOO from Ayotnom, and f5 provokes an AOO from Rolth.

The surviving men now realize this attack was folly. S2 Withdraws through the passwall and S3 Withdraws out the door he entered.

On getting to Kiwina's slumbering form Tsak pokes at it with his foot Wakey wakey Captain. Time to rise and shine. Wouldn't do to let the crew see you slacking off like this.

The ranger uses the light from the shuriken to check the centaur over and make sure there are no bleeds, broken bones or other issues that need to be dealt with.

We might have a few minutes of peace, but the teeth wil be back in numbers. Are we heading out the back door? And what's the plan from there? Back to the Rose or accomodation in one of the other quarters, which would be safer if they come after us?

"Let Falco and Elyas work on Kiwina, Tsak. Bring me that hole." Mak indicated he should lay it out next to the stone beholder. While that was happening, Mak cut the two stalks with rings and collected them.

"Get that one on the floor Wil." Mak asked hurriedly as he moved around the back side of the beholder. "Roth, push."

"Those two are going to come back with more guards. We've got to move and we've been seen. Our meeting place likely won't be safe either so we have to make our way to the Rose quickly."

Friday April 21st, 2023 1:27:24 AM

Tsak picks up the glowing shuriken as he moves to Kiwina to wake the centaur. He asks what the plan is.
Mak warns that guards may be on the way. He tells Tsak to leave the centaur alone, and to bring Mak the portable hole. He breaks off two remaining eyestalks to get the rings on them.
Falco feels a bit badly about the crispy foe. He moves over to check on Kiwina.
Wil finds there is no one to attack. (Sorry I left S2 on the map. I clarified in the post that he fled through the passwall and is nowhere to be seen.)
Elyas would like to attack S3, but there is a wall in the way. Elyas has a glowing shuriken sticking out of him, but at least he can see well because of this.
Kiwina stands after being awakened by his friends.
Ayotnom says that the Petals should break up this stone beholder. He goes to pick up the 6’ diameter sphere of stone but finds he cannot lift it. (Ayotnom can lift about 130 lb over his head. This stone sphere weighs about 6,000 lbs.)

Mak wants to roll the beholder into the portable hole. Trouble is, no one is carrying the portable hole - it’s still on the Rose. (It is not on anyone’s character sheet that I can tell, and not all the players even have a “share” of the hole on their character sheet. Mak’s character sheet suggests it is on the Rose. Please let me know if I missed something.)

It would be some work to try to roll it out of the warehouse - it’s a pretty heavy stone. It would not fit through the passwall. It would probably fit through the actual doorway, but you’re not sure if there are obstacles beyond that. Much of the town slopes down toward the harbor, and if this stone got away from you it’ll probably keep going through some buildings and killing some folks.

The one remaining Jelly flees out through the passwall muttering something in a language you do not understand. It would provoke an attack of opportunity from Wil if he was holding a melee weapon, but he is holding ranged weapons.

There is a great stone sphere, and six of the
ten eyestalks have been broken off. Two dead men lay on the floor, along with one dead Jelly. Those of you that got sprayed by one of the Jellys really smell, kind of like you got sprayed by a skunk.

It’s quiet - for now. We are still going round by round because your DM is interested in how long you stay here in this warehouse.

Status:

Kiwina proposes a plan "B". He still wants to roll the thing into public view. But stone shape is one of the spells he memorized for this outing. It ought to be able to do enough damage to make the creature unrevivable if the spell isn't needed to open a hole in the warehouse.

Ayotnom looks for something that is heavy but less than 130 pounds that he could raise to a height and then drop on the beholder statue since his plan A didn't pan out. If he finds it he grabs it, flies as high as he can in the warehouse and drops the item on the beholder statue, hoping to do some damage.

If he can't find something heavy to drop on the beholder he instead resigns himself to hitting it with some magic missiles.

9 force damage to the statue if it comes to the magic missiles

DM Mark - All Quiet on the Warehouse Front (for now)  d6=5 ; d20=5 ; d100=23 ;

Rolth swings his morning star at the large eye of the beholder statue. He can see where he hit as the blow knocks loose a few chips of stone. He looks at his morning star and concludes too many blows like that might start damaging his weapons.
Falco casts Detect Magic and begins concentrating to the east. He detects magic somewhere ahead of him and will eventually find the sources of the magic are the summoned Lantern Archon, Wil’s Spiritual Weapon, and some sources of magic on the two dead men. Mak has the three rings form the beholder.
Mak gathers the rings and several stone eyestalks from the beholder. Then he uses his cape to Dimension Door to just outside the warehouse, near the passwall. He appears in a dramatic cloud of smoke.
Kiwina considers rolling the stone beholder out of the warehouse, though that would require some destruction of the wall. The wall is stone, maybe about 12’ thick near the base. He also knows that a 6,000 lb sphere of stone will take a good deal of work to roll, and may become impossible to control.
Elyas thinks the stone beholder should be destroyed, but how?
Wil wants to kill something, but he’ll settle for some good fried chicken.
Tsak stands guard, ready to go with his friends.
Ayotnom looks around for something heavy to drop on the beholder. The only stones here are a bit small. The heaviest thing he sees is a crate filled with thick rope, and a box full of some rather heavy pieces of wood, neither of which look like they’d do much damage. Instead, he casts Magic Missle at the stone beholder. The missiles strike, but simply disappear into the stone without effect. (Magic Missile only affects creatures.)

As Mak appears outside, two men pulling a cart look up wide eyed. They run and one yells, “Don’t turn me into a newt, wizard. I ain’t done nothing!” You see a woman maybe a block away that also runs, startled Mak’s dramatic appearance.

The warehouse is quiet, but those in the warehouse hear someone yell outside. Elyas and Tsak each hold a shuriken that has Continual Flame cast on it. Two torches burn by an open door and there is some natural light from the passwall.

The DM will remind the PCs that they broke into a locked warehouse and killed some of the inhabitants and some guards. Not making any moral judgments here - just letting you know where things stand. It has now been three rounds since two of the guards fled.

Rolth goes to S4 to search the body (see below.)
Mak stands outside near a building. He tries to look like everyone else, after arriving in a dramatic puff of smoke. He wears nice, clean clothes that are not torn up, a purple and gold cloak, and an adamantine chain shirt. He actually doesn’t look like any one he has seen in this area. But, still, he tries to act casual.
Falco moves to the passwall, preparing to sneak out.
Wil exits the passwall. He directs the Lantern Archon to serve as a distraction, and begins summoninig a Air Elemental (what size?). The Lantern Archon, laughs and begins flying around Wil’s head, asking ”Are you distracted?” (How long will your summons of the Lantern Archon last.
Kiwina moves to the stone beholder. He casts Stone Shape, but finds the stone is too large for him to affect. (The stone is 38 cubic feet, and he can only affect a stone no larger than 17 cubic feet.)
Ayotnom searches the other body (see below.)

Rolth finds four potion bottles in a pouch, three full and one empty. The dead man wears studded leather armor, has two kukri knives, a short bow with a quiver of arrows, several shuriken, a cloak, boots, pitons, rope, hammer, grappling hook, a kit with makeup and facial hair, and thieve’s tools. No money though. The armor will take 5 rounds to remove, but you can take the whole body if you wish.

Ayotnom searches the other dead body and finds the same items.

Mak hears some screams to the north.

”What are those?”
“They’re floating away!”
“They’re demons. Run!”
“Demons have come to Dirt City!”

He also hears someone yelling ”Help, help! Get the guards! They’re in the warehouse!” from another area.

You've seen guards and ruffians in Dirt City, and you're pretty sure you're powerful enough to just slaughter most of them. That's not necessarily a good thing.

It has now been four rounds since two of the guards fled.

Falco sneaks stealthily out to hide and watch for trouble.
Mak returns to the passwall to tell the Petals to hurry up - trouble’s coming. He asks Wil to lead them out of Teeth territory.
Elyas suggests that everyone split up in twos and make their way to the Rose. Then he walks over to Ayotnom and uses his Dimensional Steps to take them out.
Wil tells the Air Elemental and the Lantern Archon to go cause as much mayhem as they can to provide a distraction.
Tsak rushes to the passwall, and then walks out casually, trying to blend in. His armor is so fine and light that it remains hidden beneath his clothing. He actually is able to blend in somewhat, though he is much better armed than anyone around him.
Rolth is picking out a few things from the dead man based on what Falco said was magic (I seem to recall that Falco cast Detect Magic a bit ago.) He exits, joining Wil and Mak as they head toward the Rose.
Kiwina moves out, and moves away from where the fire was set as a distraction.
Ayotnom likewise recalls what Falco had said about magic items on the dead man. He grabs those, but leaves the armored body since it exceeds his carrying capacity. (I think his max load is 130 lbs, and his gear already weighs more than 30 lbs.) He blips out with Elyas.

As the Petals move away from the building, there is indeed a great deal of comotion. A fire was set that distracted some, now an air elemental has formed into a whirlwind that is wreaking havoc, and some weird ball of light is shooting laser beams in random directions.

(Good timing - I had the guards arriving in round five - which is just when you left!)

In general, it is not hard to find your way out of Smuggler City, the term used for Teeth territory, since it’s near the Prince’s Castle which can be seen from most places in town. Beyond that is Grubbertown, and then the docks where the Rose is located.

- Elyas and Ayotnom move out.
- Wil, Rolth and Mak stick together.
- Kiwina and Tsak move out, casually. Falco spots the pair and joins them.

The three groups move past the Prince’s Castle and try to blend in as they enter the nearby Midnight Bazaar. The crowds in the Bazaar have thinned a bit, as the commotion in nearby Smuggler City has drawn some out and caused some to flee home. The three groups of Petals notice each other, but remain apart to draw less attention. Hawkers call you to their wares, but the three groups of Petals press on.

Soon, you all exit the Bazaar and enter Grubbertown. It’s a dismal place. The smells are bad and the buildings sit close to each other - more shanties than buildings really. You pass several beggars. Mak mentioned to Rolth as they moved along whiel he brushed at the tear in his leggings caused by the beholders disintegration beam. Underneath the leg was pink and blistered, but not too painful for him to walk on. "We are being followed. Chap picked us up back in SmugglerTown. Average looking fellow, common sort."

As he moved forward he passed a ring to Rolth and Wil, so they each had one of the rings found on the beholder. He summoned his rapier while his hand was low and out of sight, and reactivated the glove with the ring stored in it instead. His rapier he tucked in his belt for the time being.

Elyas easily spots the tail, having learned to do the same type of thing himself. in a town like this it is good to always assume you are being watched, to the point that it is almost comforting to actually know who is following you.

However, elyas has no way of communicating with the other pockets of the party to figure out how to best approach this man.

He speaks quietly to Ayotnom
"we have picked up a tail. looks like a laborer, but is obviously trained or well practiced in following people undetected. Let's keep moving casually, at least until we can find a good spot to double back on him or ambush him. I have an invisibility spell left if you want to vanish when we go 'round the next blind corner.

Rolth can offer up the potion of invisibility that he has in his hand, if Mak has none.

Group 1 -
Mak lets Rolth and Wil know someone is following them. He distributes the three beholder rings to his group of three.
Wil suggests confronting the person.
Rolth suggests a plan for Mak, offering his potion of invisibility to Mak.

Group 2 -
Kiwina lets Falco and Tsak know about the man. He’s not sure which of the three groups the man is actually following, and suggests that his group head to the Temple of Wardd instead.
Falco tries to move stealthily. He finds this difficult. Still, he lags back a bit.
(For Falco - Using Stealth has some significant limitations, and it’s very difficult to use while walking along with others. It requires that the user begin and end their turn in cover, and moving faster than half-speed imposes a -5 penalty. Also, Falco’s add to Stealth for DEX should be +3, not +8?)

Group 3 -
Elyas and Ayotnom both spot the man. They discuss possible tactics to take.

The sounds of chaos in Smuggler Town fade as you get farther away.

All three groups of the Petals have spotted their follower. As the three groups move through Grubbertown, things get a little harder. The man seems to be following Group 1. Groups 2 and 3 lose sight of him.

Lots of plans and actions were discussed, but apart from Falso lagging back a bit, no actions were taken. Do you do anything? Do you stop where you are? Do you go on toward the Rose?

Group 1 -
Mak ducks out of sight, drinks an invisibility potion, and then rushes toward the man that is tailing them. He looks the man over. He appears to be a common laborer, maybe about 50 years old, with a pauch. He has a few mundane seeming items hanging from his belt - a pouch, a large cup, a spoon. A simple club is tucked into his belt as well. However, Mak can tell this is a clever disguise. The clothing is false, the paunch does not sit quite right, and the club looks wrong.
Wil puts on Ring #2 from the beholder. Nothing happens that he is aware of. He finds a clever looking child and hands him 6 gold as he stops to talk to him, trying to surreptitiously point out the man following them to the child. (Not sure how else you instruct a child to go after a rather common looking person.)
Rolth stays by Wil for a moment, urging him to continue toward the dock area.

Group 2 -
Falco continues following a bit behind Kiwina and Tsak.
Kiwina stops to talk to Tsak, and they agree to head away toward the Temple of Wardd.

Group 3 -
Elyas doubles back to find that man following his friends. He tries to hide behind things as he does this.
Ayotnom looks for the man. He asks Elyas to make him invisible so he can better ambush the man.

When Wil and Rolth stop in Grubbertown, the man stops too - seemingly unaware that an invisible Mak is now about 10 feet away and studying him. As Wil points the child in the man’s direction, the man turns to head quickly away from Wil and Rolth.

Ayotnom sees the man and ducks back so as not to be noticed. Elyas is near him. He is maybe 30’ from the man, and the guy is headed toward Ayotnom and Elyas rather quickly. He has not seen Ayotnom and Elyas yet, but the man will soon be upon Ayotnom’s and Elyas’ location!

What do you do? Do you smack him, trip him, try to hide and let him pass?

Falco was lagging behind Kiwina and Tsak. He hears something and moves around a corner to see Mak appear and a man running away.
Wil watches as the boy disappears from sight. He sees Mak appear as the man runs off.
Rolth watches alongside Wil.
Elyas stands ready to intercept this fleeing man, but Ayotnom is in front of Elyas and steps out to trip the man as he flees.

Tsak finds he has lost sight of Falco, and he cautions Kiwina against leaving just yet.
Kiwina pauses.

The seemingly non-descript man flees from Mak. Then it gets worse for the guy - he is tripped by Ayotnom, and he goes down hard on the dirt street, banging his head pretty badly. Blood wells from the wound, and the man grunts as he spins onto his back, still prone. He draws a Kukri knife from…where did that come from? The only weapon he has is a club!

Mak may read this. Anyone else must make a Perception DC 35: Highlight to display spoiler: {}You can tell this man wears a clever disguise, which is partly magical. The clothing is false, the paunch does not sit quite right, and the club just looks wrong. This is not just some common laborer.

The prone man looks pretty mad.

Kiwina and Tsak move after Falco, and soon the three of them see a scene, about 40’ down a side street. Here is what they see:

There is a fairly nondescript man sprawled on the hard, dirt street. The man is on his back, Kukri knife drawn and a snarl in his face. Blood flows from a wound on his head. Ayotnom towers next to the prone man, rapier drawn. Elyas is right behind Ayotnom. Mak is maybe 20’ away from the man and Ayontom. Wil and Rolth are another 10’ behind Mak, watching to see what Ayotnom and this man will do next.

The child Wil paid looks at the gold in his hand. Then he looks at Wil and at the fight scene unfolding - and he runs in the opposite direction of all this! This all reminds Wil of what it was like to grow up in Grubbertown.

This is causing a bit of commotion in this part of Grubbertown. Those immediately near this scene bolt out of there! But you see people further away trying to hide as they crane their necks or look around corners to see what’s going on.

One person turns to Tsak, Kiwina and Falco and says, ”Hey - what’s goin’ on? Is there a fight? Which house you with?”

Even if you are the most accomplished spy in this place, there are eight of us spread out around you. So come now. Let's do this without weapons and go get an ale somewhere and talk about what you find so interesting about us. I can assure you we aren't aware of any issues we should have with you aside from your tendency to follow those that would rather not be subject to your scrutiny. Why not come peacefully and learn legitimately what you sought to learn surreptitiously."

Ayotnom says to Kiwana, "Am I hypocrite? Have I violated the non-aggression principle by tripping this guy or because he was obviously involved with the business earlier, look at the kukri, this was self-defense?"

He then readies to trip the prone man again should he regain his feet in an aggressive manner. If he indicates he'll come quietly then he won't.

Tuesday May 2nd, 2023 2:17:57 AM

Mak walks over to the man and offers his hand to help the man up. Mak calls out the man’s disguise and offers to peacefully resolve things, suggesting a drink.
Falco tells the bystander to buzz off. The bystander turns pale as he looks around at the rest of the Petals, and mutters, ”Oh, uh, beggin yer pardon m’lord. I didn’t see nothing, notp, you wasn’t even here…” as he backs away from the scene really fast!
Elyas scans the gathering crowd, looking for anyone that might pose a problem. He urges for a more private place.
Wil tries to blend in with the local, but he has clothing in good repair and is really much too clean to blend in well in Grubbertown.
Rolth recalls that he fought some men in the Warehouse that used kukri knives to fight. He also suggests a discussion with the man over a drink.
Kiwina launches into a brilliant discussion of a political system. A nearby woman says, ”There you go Bringing class into it!”
Ayotnom defends his actions tripping the man, and gets ready to trip him again if he should run. He too notices a weapon type he saw earlier.
Tsak gives Kiwina a quizzical look. He says here’s just here for Wednesday Bingo. An old man responds, ”Wednesday Bingo eh? Never heard of her. There’s a brothel down at the docks, but I don’t think they got anyone there by that name. Ask for Ruby Tuesday, she’ll set you right.” An angry woman grabs the man by an ear as he squaks protest, dragging him away.

The first thing that happens is that the boy Wil paid to bump into the man runs up from out of nowhere, ducks under Mak’s arm, and plants his foot momentarily on the prone man’s leg. Then he runs over to Wil and sticks out his hand. ”He mister. You said you’d gimme more if I bumped into the man. Well, I done it. Pay up!”

The prone man weighs his options, but the Petals seem to have their thumb on that scale. He looks at Ayotnom, Mak and Rolth and says, ”Yeah, I’ll go with you. What choice do I have? But make it a public place. I seen what happens when folk like you take a man to a dark room for questions.”

He accepts Mak’s hand, keeping a wary eye on the minotaur that is keeping an eye on him. He seems to want nothing to do with a fearsome liontaur.

Wil gives the boy a couple more gold and suggests perhaps heading to a market instead of the docks. The boy bites one of the coins and says, ”Pleasure doin’ business with ya pal.” He runs off into Grubbertown.
Falco
says, "The docks make sense. Our group is recognizable, to say the least, so no need not to head to the Rose."
Mak says he thinks he recalls a tavern down by the docks. He asks the man about Dirt City and the City Below.
Rolth says to the Petals and the new guy, "I've got a better idea. Let's duck in this closest tavern with our new friend, and here is how it is going to go. We set you up with a few rounds. You enjoy those for at least an hour. If you come out before that, we might still be there, invisible again, and you never get to enjoy an ale or anything else ever again, if you catch my meaning. Everybody understand that?"
Kiwina is grateful that at least the old woman understood him, even if she did not agree. He goes along with the others.
Tsak winks at the man as he’s dragged off by his wife. The man flashes him a thumbs-up. He goes along with the others, keeping a sharp eye out for anyone else following of looking for trouble with the group.
Ayotnom gestures to the man, indicating he sees through the man’s disguise. He also keeps a sharp eye out, and stands ready to trip this guy again if he causes trouble.

Wil recalls there are several markets in Dirt City, but the nearest is the Scrum and sits next to the docks. The Scrum is a busy market, frantic at times. They deal in all kinds of black-market goods and transactions - usually goods a little hot even for Dirt City, things arriving captains are anxious to get rid of quickly.

As you go, you find there are a few in Grubbertown that seem to be following you, seemingly out of a combination of curiosity and boredom. The boy Wil paid is among them now.

The man answers some of Mak’s questions. His answers are brief.

“The Houses? Well, there’s six of them - The House of Keys, the House of Knives, the House of Teeth, the House of Cloaks, the House of Wolves, and the House of Darts. And there’s the Prince of course.”

“The City Below? Well, you can go there I guess, but it’s mostly just families down there. There are some inns and taverns I suppose. I doubt they’d have much you folks would want.”

“What House are you with, anyway?”

As you head toward the docks, you skirt the Scrum. You pass hawkers of all kinds of things, some making claims of exotic skins from sentient creatures, elixirs said said to extend life or make you invulnerable in battle, books containing forbidden knowledge. One seller has some diminutive flying humanoids in carefully crafted lanterns, some with dragonfly-like wings and green skin, others that glow brightly and have moth-like wings. The small creatures glance at you from their lantern prisons as you pass.

Apart from your few following fans from Grubbertown, you are ignored by others as you go. Tsak and Ayotnom notice that your group seems to attract the gaze of many as you pass, these folk are quick to avert their eyes with a practiced appearance of ignoring you.

You may recall that when you first arrived and asked around the docks, you heard about a number of taverns/inns over in Dockside: The Garrote, Smuggler’s Hideaway, Gone Fishing, and The Codpiece. You were told there were some in Grubbertown too, but advised not to go there. They also mentioned there was a new one in the Burn. Then there was the Buttering Ram in Moontown, but that’s not really at Dockside.

Or you could go to the Rose as Falco suggested.

Where do you head?

The man selling what Kiwina assumes are intelligent fey creatures disturbs him. He considers options for freeing some of the creatures, but doesn't do anything yet.

DM Mark - "It may mean backtracking a bit."
Thursday May 4th, 2023 2:29:27 AM

Kiwina suggests the tavern they know in Moontown.
Falco follows along. He doesn’t care what the destination is so long as they get off the street.
Mak refers to Rolth as the Great Sphinx of Alberoth, and that he will buy drinks in the nearest tavern.
Elyas tells the man not to worry about that house the group is with, suggesting they may give the man some information in return for his cooperation.
Wil suggests going back to the Rose to have a drink aboard ship with the groups bramble-taur brothers.
Rolth growls, "Hey guys, can we stop talking about anyone that we know, anything we own, or anything else that might help this thug and his buddies come after us and our friends later?”
Tsak suggests going to the Buttering Ram in Moontown, and takes charge to lead the group there.

Heading to the Buttering Ram reverses your course away from the docks, and you skirt between the edge of Grubbertown and the Scrum.

- As you do, you hear a hawker in the Scrum that claims to be selling deeds to businesses and properties in New Elenna. Funny, he doesn’t look like a real estate agent.

- You pass someone claiming to sell weapons enchanted to always miss their target - "Excellent for screwing over that special someone!"

- You go by a stall, and the man there tries to entice you to look at his selection of unicorn horns and hides, which he says are useful in healing magics as well as many other things!

At this point, your little entourage from Grubbertown seems to lose interest and disperses.

Continuing on to Moontonw, you make your way to a fine, big manor house, with a gated inner courtyard. As before, the gate is closed. Attached to the house outside this gate, you see the tavern you visited before. Above the door is a carved sign - a battering ram, coated in butter with several men trying to hold the slippery ram.

It’s midday. As you enter, you see a few patrons, half of which are halflings. There is a gnome in the corner. You see three elves talking rather furtively amongst themselves at one table. They stop as you come in. Two beastfolk, both badgers in appearance look in your direction and nod.

As before there are a variety of seating options - some higher chairs that would let a small character sit comfortably at the tables, as well as some larger, low chairs an cushions that would accommodate taurs. Falco is also surprised to smell some familiar smells - this place serves halfling food! You also detect the smell of brewing beer here.

Tombo Greenhand, whom you’ve met before walks over. A human, he’s a young man, tall and thin, with sandy red hair and blue eyes. He is dressed in halfling-style clothes: fine shirt, waistcoat, shortened trousers, and bare feet.

He wipes his hands on his apron as he says, "Ah, come in, come in and welcome back. How can we serve you?"

The man with you scans the room, seemingly not surprised by the place or the folk there. He says nothing, his face impassive.

DM Mark - "I'll have your strongest ale"
Friday May 5th, 2023 2:19:19 AM

Ayotnom wonders if it was wise to bring a problem here, particularly with the Tide out of town. He keeps a sharp eye out.
Falco is glad to be be back in the Buttering Ram, more for the halfling flavor to the place than anything else. He waves to the anthropomorphic badgers.
Mak is quick to grab and ale for himself and for Tsak.
Elyas finds a table near a corner away from others. He also grabs two ales, giving the other to the stranger. “So, how about it then? you tell us who you are and what you're trying to learn from us, and we'll see what we are willing to share in return, savvy?”
Wil lets Tombo know the new guy is important, and someone that should be made comfortable. He orders drinks for the table.
Rolth leaves the table for a moment to whisper to Tombo, "This fellow is probably a spy for the Teeth, you know, those Ga'al heartseed smuggling scum. They seem to be upset that someone got their pet beholder stoned. He might cause a bit of trouble, so maybe some of your handier friends might want to be hanging about. But you seem to be in charge of the place while the Tide is out, so I welcome your thoughts on how to handle the fellow, given that you know the political landscape better than us visitors do."
Kiwina is concerned the Petals aren’t following the social norms of this place. Still, that's not a reason to not eat well while here.

The stranger scans the room as you enter. Sense Motive DC 15:Highlight to display spoiler: {The stranger you brought with you seems slightly more relaxed as you enter this place.}

Rolth is able to look casual in his conversation with Tombo, but Tombo is quite alarmed. He stares at this new person, and then scowls at Rolth as he replies quietly (but not in a whisper), ”Now see here, I don’t much care who you are, I’ll throw you out myself if you're here to cause trouble. I mean it. The houses know better than to cause trouble here. Best you heed that as well.”

Tombo countenance quickly recovers as he returns with Rolth to your table to get you what you need. Soon there are drinks and food aplenty.

The stranger may not have overheard everything, but he seems to understand well enough. A half smile crosses his face at Tombo’s reaction. ”Seems you folk really are new here. So here’s some free advice to show my good will. Causing trouble in this place will likely bring down the wrath of the Tide and the Prince on your heads. And maybe even the houses. There’s a negotiated truce between the Tide and the houses. Sort of a live and let live agreement that works rather well.

“Who am I? You can call me Grif.

“Why was I following you? To find out where you’re from and where you’re going.

“As far as what I want to learn from you, I’m glad you asked. Why did you break into a Teeth warehouse and kill the creature and the guards there? What business did you have there? What were you looking for? Who sent you to do this? You say you’re not with a house, but I find that hard to believe. Someone told you to go where you did. Who was that someone?”

Ayotnom is brought a strong, flavorful ale as requested, and he is pleasantly surprised to find the tankard fits his large hand. He notices that the gnome in the corner keeps a sharp eye on your group but tries not to be noticed. He looks at Tombo for a moment before he gets up and leaves.

The elves return to their argument. The halflings and the badgers seem somewhat intrigued by your unusual group, and occasionally glance over as they continue with their conversations.

Soon, three humans in leathers enter and take a table away from yours. They seem to look at your group for a bit and order some drinks. They have no weapons. Perception DC 20 Highlight to display spoiler: {They have plenty of knives hidden about them, and perhaps some other sharp things as well.}

The food and the drinks are good. There is no entertainment this afternoon.

Two halflings come over and challenge Mak and Tsak to a game of darts. (If you accept, roll three ranged attack rolls each.)

Rolth sees "Grif" relax as we enter, which tends to corroborate his later assertion that this place is not one for causing trouble. Which is good, because that was the whole point of his private aside with Tombo, who has clearly misunderstood. "We're not going to cause trouble here, Grif, but you on the other hand can't be trusted not to. Fancy disguise, sneaking around town spying on people, and drawing a blade when confronted for this suspicious behavior. So how about we stop with the accusations and enjoy some food and drink in peace before going our separate ways. No muss, no fuss, and no violating local custom here in this fine establishment, which is just teeming with sharp bits." This last with a casual glance towards the humans that just came in.

Mak was following the conversation closely and had almost decided to take Tsak and slip out to update the keys about their task when he was approached and challenged to darts. He looked over at the others and saw they were engaged with their tail, so he had a minute.

"Ok. Let's see, this end goes into the target, right?" he said in an attempt to seem humble as he stepped to the line. Mak took his time with each throw as he carefully lined up each shot and tossed the dart towards the target. Each Dart struck home dead center.

"Look at that!" Mak exclaimed. "What luck!"

The sudden appearance of Kiwina's voice in Tsak's head causes the ranger to jump a bit. He hadn't seen the big guy cast the spell, some notice would have been nice.
At the mention of the gnome Tsak takes a closer look around the room and becomes aware of the preponderance of knives on the group of men a couple of tables across.

Gain entrance to warehouse = tick
Deal with the monster within = tick
Lie low after the gig = improvement required.

Tsak can see this thing going sideways if the Petals aren't careful, and he's suddenly thinking it was a mistake to bring Grif to their favorite watering hole in Dirt City.
Hopefully the pubs reputation as independant of the Houses will keep everyone's murderous instincts at bay.

Sure. That'll work.

He checks his kukri is in place and makes sure he can reach and draw his sword if required.

DM Mark - Grif
Monday May 8th, 2023 1:15:44 AM

Rolth tells Grif he cannot be trusted and admonishes the man for his sneaky behavior.
Kiwina seems annoyed with Grif, telling him, ”you should be answering our questions. Who are you, and why were you following us?"
Mak steps up to the darts and feigns unfamiliarity. Then he throws 3 bullseyes without even trying.
Falco misses nothing. He watches Mak humiliate the halflings and keeps an eye on the three rogues that entered.
Wil asks rhetorically if the Petals are a covert group. Then he asks Grif what house he is with.
Tsak sees Mak’s throws and declines the game of darts. He gives Grif another ale. Grig nods to Tsak.
Elyas asks Grif if he followed on his own or if he was sent to follow the Petals. He asks if Grif is with the House of Teeth.
Ayotnom casts a spell in the tavern, which draws some attention, and then leaves to the privy. Once there, he sends a whispered Message to 6 of his 7 friends, warning them that the gnome that was sitting in the corner was scoping them out.

Grif regards Rolth for a moment. ”I can see why sneaky behavior may offend those that broke into a warehouse and murdered the guards.”

He continues to group, ”I told you who I was and why I was following you. And yes, you could say I work for the Teeth. You murdered two of my friends. Now, friend, you said you would answer my questions if I answered yours. Why did you break into a Teeth warehouse, assassinate the creature there and kill my friends? I know why I was there, what was your business there? What were you looking for? Who sent you to do this? This was not some random act of larceny, because you didn’t break in to steal anything. So who told you to go to that warehouse?”

“Oh, and thanks for the meal and the beer.”
(This last part is not sincere.)

The elves and the humans stop talking and look at you. The half-dozen or so halflings don’t seem to care much.

The two halflings with Mak stare at the dart board for a stunned moment, their mouths hanging open. Then their eyes narrow as they look at Mak.
”Awright, what’s your deal?”
“Yeah, you’re using magic, aren’t you.”
“That wasn’t just luck.”
“He’s trying to scam us, he is.”
“Yeah, you owe us a beer.”
“Yeah, and show us how you did that.”

Then another halfling scurries over and says, ”Yeah, me too. I’m with them. You owe us three a beer.”
The three look expectantly up at Mak.

You see the gnome return with a rather burley looking female dwarf. A large smith’s hammer hangs from her belt. The gnome returns to his seat in the corner and the dwarf has a whispered conversation with Tombo before getting two ales and going to sit with the gnome. This pair scans the room.

As for the creature there, we did not learn what it was from any house, but rather from our own intelligence sources. And having learned that those who control the warehouse had brought in a beholder as an ally, well, we are big darned heroes, so we knew we must investigate this potential threat to all decent folk. The beholder then attacked us, and we destroyed it, which I think it quite proper. If I serve anyone, it is no house, but rather Domi the Defender. And quite proud of that too. Maybe you should rethink your life choices and serve something bigger than a House that would join forces with such a great evil."

Mak knew he was carrying about fifty gold, so he reckoned that these three haflings would wipe him out in short order. Once the food was ordered, Mak patted Tsak on the shoulder, saying simply. "Watch who follows." as he stepped outside to get some fresh air. Once the door closed behind him he stepped around the corner and watched the door for pursuers. If after a few minutes no one exited the Buttering Ram, Mak started to make his way to Keys territory.

It is as Rolth says, we came here to this city looking for information related to happenings outside of this place. We are not associated with any house, but have come to investigate a threat to our homeland. Instead of finding our answers we stumbled upon information about a mythical evil monster being smuggled into a warehouse. we went in to have a look to see if the rumors were true, and were attacked by the thing. So naturally we had to defend ourselves and kill it.

Elyas looks to the others to see if any of them know what to do now. we have a Teeth agent here, who knows we killed the Beholder. We can't let him go back to his masters until we get what we need... so what to do with Grif in the meantime??

DM Mark - Grif
Tuesday May 9th, 2023 3:30:21 AM

Rolth says the Petals did not break in. They just walked in, and defended themselves. And since the creature in there was a beholder, the Petals must be heroes! Then he encourages Grif to rethink his life choices and follow Domi.
Mak admits to being under a Divine blessing. He buys the halflings some beer and snacks. Then he asks Tsak to see if anyone follows him and he slips out the door to head to the Keys territory.
Wil managed to shush the voices in his head. He worries and looks for a quick exit, but all he sees is the front door to this place and a couple of windows.
Elyas repeats what Rolth said, referring to an evil mythical monster, and asserts they were only defending themselves.
Falco worries the conversation with Grif is sliding sideways.
Ayotnom returns from his trip to the privy. He looks over to the gnome and the dwarf in the corner.
Kiwina says, "I don't remember promising to exchange information, only to leave you unharmed if you spend an hour getting drunk after we go." He hopes others overheard the discussion about the beholder.

Ayotnom can see that the gnome is keeping a general eye on the room, sipping his ale. The dwarf, however, seems to be staring in the Petals direction. Is she looking at the Petals, or their guest, or both? He looks back at her, since she’s not shy about observing the Petals. Ayotnom thinks he remembers her from the Petals’ visit to the adjoining courtyard before - something about her running a leather working place.

Kiwina suspects that the humans are listening to the conversion coming from the Petals direction. He’s not sure about the elves, though they are quieter now than they were before. The halflings seem to be discussing things among themselves.

Speaking of the halflings, the three friends Mak made gather up their food and drink and follow Mak out of the tavern.
”Hey, where you going?”
“Can we go?”
“Yeah, we’re pretty good company. I mean, we’re not as good at darts as you are.”
“Say, while we go, tell us what else you’re good at?”
“Yeah, how about belching. You good at that?”

Then one of the halflings lets out a pretty long belch. They look expectantly at Mak.

Grif replies to the Petals protestations of innocence. ”Sure. Whatever you say. You used magic to enter a warehouse and then killed everything in there in self defense. Anyway, you need me to stay here an hour after you leave? Sure - leave some money for beer and be on your way. Unless you need to kill the people here in self defense before you go.”

Two more dwarves enter the place, shout a greeting to Tombo and sit down. Two beers are brought to them.

Snapping out of his reverie he focuses on the table where Grif and Rolth are vying for higher moral ground and the sleev-ed hearts of the inn's patrons.
At this point he's figured that the dwarf and gnome are with Tombo, so he splits his attention between the humans and the elves.
Tsak stays near the dart board where he's in the good position to surprise or flank anyone that makes moves toward the rest of the petals.

Tsak watches as Mak and his followers leave. He keeps an eye on the human and the elves, not really trusting either.
Falco debates asking the halflings to keep an eye on Grif.
Mak warns the halflings of his flatulence, then he offers them 20 gold to drink and wait for his return.
Elyas asks Grif what it would cost to not tie the Petals to the warehouse break-in, and even suggests the Petals will keep quiet about the beholder if Grif withholds the info about the Petals.
Wil asks if Grif knew about plans to use the beholder, suggesting the creature was a threat to Dirt City.
Kiwina asks why the Teeth are called the Teeth.
Rolth lets Elyas discuss things with Grif. Ready makes a plan to leave and head back to the ship. He pays Tombo a few gold to keep Grif snacking and drinking for an hour. Thanks to Ayotnom’s Message spell, he can whisper things to Ahyotnom who can then relay the plan to the others.
Ayotnom informs the group quietly that the dwarven woman is likely the leather worker they saw in the Tide House courtyard earlier.

—----------------------------------------------
The halflings like Mak’s company, and they seem ready to accept a flatulence challenge. But they are quick to take his money and promise to drink in his honor until his return. They go back in the inn. They flash a thumbs up to their friends and order some ales!

With Mak’s little helpers gone, he heads up alone toward the Keys’ territory. Past the Full Moon Market, and, … was it past Wardd’s temple? Yeah, he’s pretty sure it was. He’s looking for the place he…wait, which building was it - they’re all pretty similar looking. Hmmm. (Make two rolls for Mak, Survival or Knowledge Local, whichever he’s better at.)
---------------------------------------------

As Elyas lays out a proposal for Grif he thinks for a moment, which seems to require some effort on his part. Eventually he replies to Elyas, glancing at Rolth for a moment as he does. ”First, glad you agree that your crew broke in.

“Now, I figure for 100 gold, I’ll do my best to convince my House that going after you all would only bring more publicity to the ally they had in there. We were always a little weirded out by that thing anyway, so I can’t say I’m sad it’s gone. My friends on the other hand … well, that’s the job, right?

“As far as knowing who done it, well, you all don’t exactly blend in. The cat’s likely outta the bag on that one.

“As for that thing being a threat to the folks in Dirt City, that’s nonsense. That creature weren’t there for muscle. Nah, it was some sorta smuggling mastermind. It only dealt with the higher-ups, Vox or Horatio mostly. They were pretty proud of that monstrosity and will be pretty sore it’s gone. But still, the nature of that beast is prolly best kept under wraps, so I think I can convince them there’s not much profit in going after you lot.”

Assuming you offer him the 100 gold, he will take it and assure you he’ll be there a while.

Assuming Mak left, the rest of the Petals head out. They wait for a few minutes to make sure Grif doesn't follow them. He does not, at least not that they know, so the Petals make their way to the Rose to wait for Mak.

After an hour, Mak’s still not back.

Glad that his hafling friends were gone, Mak moved through the city in the general direction he thought best, stopping only to drink a potion of Foxes Cunning to sharpen his mind and a potion of Owl's Wisdom to make good decisions. Lastly, he dropped the ring back into his haversack, gloved his rapier, and since he was starting to feel a bit vulnerable he drank his potion of Cure Serious Wounds and saw that his leg completely healed.

Mak slowed to a stop. He felt like he might have made a wrong turn, so he looked about for landmarks. He thought he spotted the roof of a familiar building in the distance and buoyed by a sense of accomplishment he headed towards the Key tower.

Kiwina is surprised Mak went alone to meet with the Keys.
Rolth help Elyas with his efforts. He begins to worry Mak is still gone as he thinks it shouldn’t have taken more than a couple of hours.
Tsak regrets a bit not going with Mak. But, being Tsak, he makes the best of things. He kicks it in the late afternoon sun with Esmerelda as the ship gently rocks moored to the stone dock.
Ayotnom shares what he knows about beholders with Grif, hoping he understand the gravity of the creature they were protecting. The man seems a little unnerved to hear what the thing could do and actually thanks Ayotnom for the information.
Mak moves into unfamiliar territory in an unfamiliar city. He drinks a couple potions to sharpen his wits and does his best to look for landmarks. He also drinks a healing potion.

Elyas will talk to his friends and find that Wil and Rolth both have a ring from the beholder. Mak has the third ring. In addition, Elyas looks at the headband the beholder wore (that your DM forgot to mention. D’oh!) He will find that the ring Rolth has is a Ring of Blinking, which would explain the beholder’s ability. The ring that Wil carries is rather unusual. It grants +4 to saving throws as a Cloak or Resistance but is a spotless item. And that headband? It’s a +4 Headband of Alluring Charisma. Pretty powerful items.

Things are relatively quiet at the docks today. Not in a creepy way, just in a slow commerce way. But it’s kinda nice. There is one ship manned by liontaurs unloading some cargo a couple docks over.

Where the heck is Mak - it’s been almost three hours. Maybe he got lost. Or maybe he’s back at the Buttering Ram drinking with those halflings.

—---------------------------------------------
Meanwhile, Mak is lost. Or rather Mak is right here and it’s Drola that is lost to him. He can see Key Tower and he knows the building where the Petals met with Drola is somewhere nearby. He searches for a couple hours but can’t seem to figure out which one it was. He’s pretty sure he’s looked at some of these buildings now more than once. Drola seemed a bit secretive and kept a pretty low profile, so really it’s her fault that she’s lost. Given her reluctance to involve the Keys in affairs with other houses, he’s not even sure if others among the Keys would know about the mission she gave the Petals. He could pound on some doors. He could just start shouting “Drola”, but would she have even given her real name? Or maybe if he stays here long enough Drola will find him - it’s possible. Mak knows his skills are many, but it’s others in his party that really excel at this kind of a search.

(Rest assured that the DM is not trying to thwart you. Finding Drola is indeed difficult, especially for one person. Mak can continue to search, making either one Survival or Knowledge Local check per hour at DC 30.)

The afternoon stretches into early evening.

Mak could see the tower, so he knew he was in the right part of the city. When he left so quickly he hadn't thought of the warehouse meeting place and that nondescript building was proving to be a bit difficult to locate. The warrior leaned against a nearby building and closed his eyes as he went over the twists and turns of the streets in his mind. How hard could this be? He'd navigated much more difficult places in the past, here he just had a few blocks of streets.

Seraching his mind for the correct place, Mak just came up empty. He could turn back and seek help, but is friends were counting on him. Instead he walked into the square in front of the Key's Tower and withdrew his mandolin and his tabard. He turned the tabard inside out and laid it on the ground in front of him, dropping a silver coin on it to let people know what the cloth was for.

Gripping the instrument properly Mak started to play. After a few false starts he found a tune he was comfortable playing and between songs he took a moment to pick the next one. (taking 10 with each attempt - 17 on each check). He wasn't the performer that Rolth was, but he made a fair minstrel as he chose upbeat, happy tunes, sure to get people's attention.

He knew he would attract attention this way, so perhaps one of Drola's agents would spot him here to do the info exchange. As he played he looked out over the square looking for signs of Drola.

Rolth discusses the items found and wears the headband the Beholder had. As the party heads out to check on Mak, Rolth tells Ramsey to let Mak know to stay there if he returns. He says the Petal will check back at the ship every 3-4 hours.
Mak knew he was in the right area, but he didn’t think the building where they met Drola would be that hard to find. He takes another approach. He lays out some clothing on the ground and begins playing his mandolin, hoping that perhaps Drola or her agents will spot him.
Falco is good with the party using the found items.
Elyas is worried Mak is not back and that something might have happened to him. He suggests seeking out Drola.
Wil realized he might not be able to keep up with the party at a normal pace while moving stealthily. He looks for anyone familiar.
Kiwina is not worried about Mak’s safety, he’s more worried about his sobriety. Kiwina applies his Survival skills to seeking out Mak.
Tsak figures Mak was distracted by a tavern or a woman or both. He and Esmerelda trot off with the others.
Ayotnom heads out with the others looking for Mak.

—------------------------------------------------
Mak’s efforts result in a few coins tossed on his cloth. He also gets told gruffly that performers usually do better at the docks, or the Temple of Wardd, or any of the markets. (You DM did and has been rolling a percentage chance for Drola to find Mak, but once again not this hour.)
—------------------------------------------------

A couple things come from Wil’s efforts.

When Wil decides to use stealth, his friends will see him do something quite remarkable. He actually reaches out and draws nearby shadows to him, and as the shadows envelope him he is able to disappear from sight. Well, from the sight of normal people - most of the Petals can still see him just fine. Wil will find that trying to keep up with everyone does make it more difficult to remain hidden as he moves.

Wil is able to recognize a couple people on the docks that he knew from his time in Grubbertown. They give a grunt of recognition, and when asked about someone named Drola they’ve not heard of that person.

The party heads out. They make their way back to the Keyhole, the name for the area around Key Tower. Soon, they find a wandering troubadour playing his…wait a minute! That’s not just any wandering minstrel, that’s Mak. And from the looks of things he’s earning a bit.

By now it’s dusk. Torches are lit on the tower and lamps shine through some windows.

Soon though, with Kiwina’s survival shills and the assistance of others in the party, the Petals are pretty sure they have located that same non-descript doorway where they met with Drola before. They knock on the door and after a moment, a small girl you saw before opens the door. She says over her shoulder, ”It’s them Drola.” She lets you in. Drola is rises from a chair. There is a human dressed in leathers there as well.

Drola says, ”Ah, welcome back. You made quite a ruckus there in Smuggler City. If the rumors are true, you released some demons. So tell me what happened? What sort of creature was in there? Were they any witnesses? I see you all made it out alive, so that’s good.”

Drola will sit, but the human and the girl stand. There are places for you to sit and a pitcher of water. There are some cups that are probably clean.

(Ayotnom, Mak and Rolth can see through the little girl's disguise - she's actually a halfling.)

As soon as the petals entered the square and Mak spotted them he put away his mandolin and gathered up the coins from the ground. He flipped the tabard around and put it on, once more proclaiming his noble house for all to see.

"Greeting chaps! It seems that I can walk from Zarthmore to New Elenna and back without getting proper lost, but put me in a small city and I can't find my way past the Tavern." he called out as he patted each on the back when they approached.

Once reacquainted and they were on their way, Mak dropped his meager earnings from his performance into the most convenient beggars cup as they passed, including his one silver piece seed money.

At Drola's place Mak withdrew the three beholder eyestalks from his haversack and laid them on the table. "I believe one of us has claimed one as a trophy, but the other two can be used as proof that a dangerous and evil creature was being kept in the warehouse."

Mak didn't elaborate as he walked over and poured a cup of water, sniffed it, and decided that it would have to do in the absence of ale or beer. He then went to the door and leaned against it and watched the room while his friends conducted the meeting.

"Elyas, old bean. Can you mend this for me?" Mak said pointing to the line of vaporized material on his leggings. "Leg healed up jolly good, but fabric is still a might buggered up."

We got out and scattered before many guards could get there, but we had to kill a few guards or mercenaries that responded quickly. We grew a tail who worked for the teeth and knew what we did. We may have been able to convince him to keep our involvement on the down low, but no guarantee.

Mak was thirsty, had been lost and not trusting himself to the streets of the city, but was in an area where he at least had some security. So naturally he had stayed put. His time on high alert had him in a peculiar frame of mind such that Elyas sarcasm wasn't lost on him. It made him wonder what he had done to earn such. He supposed that had he been successful and returned in a timely manner the reception would be better, but that didn't happen. The young nobleman thought he handled it well anyway, apparently that wasn't the universal opinion.

"As you wish, Elyas." Mak replied already not concerned if his clothing was repaired or not. He had extra, he just thought the walk back might be better and he less recognizable in undamaged attire. That he still bore the mark of a disintegration beam might alert someone, but he'd handle it when the time came.

Mak also noted Kiwina's appraising glance and held up a hand. "Don't go getting any ideas, I was playing simple tunes and old songs at that. Rolth is a master bard, and I just an amateurish hack compared to he. I didn't even keep the coin." he said at Kiwina's odd look.
