DM Mark - "But trouble is what we're going there for, isn't it?"  d100=14 ; d100=39 ;
Monday February 20th, 2023 1:24:11 AM

Mak remains concerned that a direct approach in Dirt City is a mistake, but he’ll go along with the others.
Falco wanted to buy some darker clothing, but he finds that neither Frog Hollow where Froylot lives, nor the smaller fishing hamlet on the coast seems to have much of anything fitting the small owlman. He wonders what folk wear in a legendary City of Thieves.
Elyas puts his skills to use setting the ship’s directional device to head towards Dirt City.
Wil worries about another Galvo attack. He shows off his new Tower Shield. (see my email on this.)
Kiwina looks forward to the long voyage. As Mak and Tsak talk of splitting up, Kiwina cautions against splitting the party in Dirt City may mean more chances for trouble.
Tsak goads Kiwina, telling the centaur that trouble sounds pretty great. Then he pokes at Wil with his new shield. As he moves about the ship, he finds his new armor is quite comfortable and easy to conceal beneath his clothes. However, while he tries to pose as a “big, dumb half-orc,” he moves with a strength and grace that is difficult to conceal. (Absent a bluff check, that is.)
Rolth favors a straight forward approach in Dirt City, posing as any other vessel looking for business and profit.
Ayotnom ask if the ship has any other flag to fly than one from the Taur Isles.

Ayotnom finds that the Rose has no other flags in store. However, Ramsey has enough canvas that a plain white flag can be easily crafted, and he has some paints that may be used. What does Ayotnom have in mind? What, if any, flag do you fly?

As Kiwina noted, this is indeed a long voyage and one out of sight of land. But the navigation instrument the Petals call Garwin provides a great deal of reassurance to Captain and crew. The Rose sails on through day and night, and finally after 13 days, a port comes into view. You can see a couple of ships headed out, and several smaller fishing boats plying the water. They look at the Rose as it heads in, some waving at you as you go by.

As you enter the harbor at Dirt City you instantly discover that Dirt City is quite a sizable city. (DC 25 knowledge local check, Highlight to display spoiler: {You know that the population is over 50,000 people.}) The harbor is filled with ships coming and going, but the Rose is approached by one of many small boats that act as guides into the great stone docks built out into the water. The system seems to be quite efficient, and you are pretty sure that if it were not for the guide boats, the harbor would be in complete chaos due to all the shipping traffic.

Beyond the dock area, the city stretches up and away from the water. You see rooftops of houses, smoke waft up here and there around the city. The rise is somewhat hilly here and there, and you see a number of towers that seem to poke up at the skyline in places. Interestingly, there is no wall around the city.

Eventually the Rose is able to tie up to a large stone dock that juts out into the harbor.

As you disembark, you look around and are a bit surprised to find a town that, in spite of its name, looks relatively clean. Well, clean for its size anyway. You have heard that an adventuring group who call themselves The Tide dwelt here in the past, and are pretty sure they have played a role in the current state of the city. As you look around you observe that the majority of the citizens are human, but you do note a fair number of halflings and half-orcs going about their daily lives. Of course other races are visible, but in vastly lesser numbers.

(OOC: Ha... did I get the name of my old group wrong :))
All the days, Wil is so happy to be off the Rose. He bounds down the gangplank to the dock.
He leaves the tower shield on the boat and walks around proudly in a dock he was familiar with that was until the anxiety struck and he worried.
"I don't recall too much right now." (Know. Local: 14)
"How do we get a hold of the Tide, it's been so long."
Wil then immediately slips into information-gathering mode and begins to ask the locals like he never left the city.

"How's the city doing?"
"Can you point me to the Tide, we may need their help."
"Have you seen a temple of Wardd?"

Aboard ship Mak answered Wil about the Galvos. "I agree old man, I picked up this Elven Curve Sword since it's a slashing weapon and those seemed to do better against them than my little stabber."

Once they were on the way into the port Mak half expected a harbor pilot to come aboard, but was pleased when they were allowed to pilot their own ship. At the dock he looked out into the city and commented to his friends. "I'll feel much better once we are on the underside of this place and safe. With all the rumors we've heard I'm not too sure how safe we'll be up top. Maybe we should billet here on the Rose." Mak suggested.

"Round the clock watches on deck, Captain?" Mak asked Kiwina, having decided for himself he'd rather not sleep in the city overnight. It just looked too big.

Mak watched Wil barrel down the gangplank and onto the dock, but he didn't move.

Today he'd outfitted himself in his armor and cape with a loose white long sleeve shirt, but neglected to wear his tabard and family crest. By the same token his family sword and signet ring weren't in sight and his rapier's sheath was missing. Instead he wore a sheath upon his back with a great two handed Elven Curve Blade. It's silver and gold inlay and exquisite blade indicated it was of masterwork quality. Otherwise he wore leggings and his heavy boots along with his miscellaneous magical jewelry and accessories like his belt and sleeve garters.

While Wil was on the dock Mak watched for signs of danger around the crazy man.

This place doesn't look all that bad. you'd think a place with a name like Dirt City would look rougher. I do agree with Mak, though, it would probably be prudent to sleep on our own ship instead of trying to find a good place in an unknown town.

He looks around at what can be seen from their dock.

DM Mark - "But trouble is what we're going there for, isn't it?"  d100=88 ;
Tuesday February 21st, 2023 1:14:34 AM

Wil is glad to be back. He stands on the docks asking questions.
Mak doesn’t trust this city. He thinks it best to stay aboard the ship at night. He watches as Wil goes down on the docks and ask around about things.
Falco is excited about the place, inspite of what he’s heard.
Elyas agrees that sleeping on the ship might be safer. He walks down onto the docks and asks where to go first.
Ayotnom works on disguising the ship a bit.
Rolth waits and watches.
Tsak is impressed and a bit intimidated by the size of Dirt City. He goes down onto the docks and waits for the party to come up with a plan.
Kiwina comes down the gang plank and goes with the others into the City.

Ayotnom works on a new flag, thinking a country with poor record keeping might be best. (Good roll - what country do you choose? As a player, you have access to the maps and info in the Geography part of the Woldipedia, so let me know what you choose. If you’re looking for a place with poor record keeping, you may recall that Fargunia really frowns on keeping private info on people. Beyond that, I’ll let you do the research.)

When Ayotnom starts painting over the name on the Rose, Ramsey takes back his paints from the minotaur. ”Now hold on there Mr. Ogini, but you’ll not be changing the name of the ship without clearance from Cap’n Kiwina.” To be sure, if Kiwina agrees, Ramsey will have no problem with him changing it to The Gilded Lily.

—----------------------------------------------------
Wil excitedly starts asking questions on the docks. He gets a number of looks.

"How's the city doing?" All this gets him is some strange looks. One dock worker says, ”Er, I reckon the city is doing fine. Maybe the better question is are you alright?”

"Can you point me to the Tide, we may need their help." A man points at the water. ”Uh, the Tide? Well, it’s right there. It comes in, and then it goes out. It’s a bit low right now, but just wait and that’ll change.”

"Have you seen a temple of Wardd?" A man points to what is probably the most noteworthy feature in the city - a massive building up the hill a ways. ”That up there’s Wardd’s Temple. Head up that way, ya can’t miss it.”

You conclude the dock workers here may not have much helpful information, maybe because they don’t know much, or maybe because they tend to be tight lipped with all the folks here coming and going. You’ll need to venture up into the city for more info. But you can get some general info:

Asking around the docks you learn there are a number of recommended taverns/inns over in Dockside: The Garrote, Smuggler’s Hideaway, Gone Fishing, The Codpiece. ”There’s some in Grubbertown too, but you don’t wanna go there. There's a new one in the Burn, but I ain’t been in there yet. But it’s new.”

You can see there is a large keep near the water to the left of the docks. ”Oh the keep? Well, that’s where the Master Thief lives. Some call him the Prince. He sorta runs the place.

You see six towers throughout the city with lower buildings between them. ”Them towers? Them’s the ruling houses, each a different one and each with … well, you best ask them if you want to know more. Oh, and they gots some taverns and rooming houses near some of ‘em, but I don’t go to those.”

The adventuring group named The Tide? ”Er, I don’t know nothing about them. I think they got a place in Moontown. I don’t know nothing though, none of my business.”

You see a large, low building near the docks. ”Uh, that there’s the free school. Cause it’s free. It’s fer getting an edjumication or sumpthin, if’n you need that sorta thing.”

There’s a small forest of sorts in town. ”Oh, that’s Spider Park. The statues of Violet and Arturo are there. Pity what happened to them two. There’s a whole bard’s tale about that.”

So, with a little more info and the whole city before you, where do you go?

Ayotnom decides Fargunia's privacy policies likely means they don't keep very extensive records on their ships so he paints the Fargunian flag on the canvas provided.

He then goes to see Kiwana about changing the name of the [i}Rose[/i] explaining that when they are headed home from Dirt City he will gladly paint the name back the way it was, but traveling incognito on this journey might be to their advantage so appearing to be a different ship named The GIlded Lily out of Fargunia might allow them to learn more about the person dealing books about the undead to the dragon they recently dispatched.

DM Mark - "The Temple it is then!"

Elyas cautions about splitting up in a place like this. He suggests either going to the Temple or Wardd or seeking out the Tide.
Mak urges caution in this place. He does not trust going to the priests in the temple, and asks Wil how to reach the City Below. He keeps his eyes and ears open as he goes.
Wil starts to lead, but then falls back to follow.
Tsak sees the party falling into a discussion again and makes a decision. To the Temple or Wardd!
Rolth agrees, paying attention to his surrounding as he goes.
Kiwina has no problem with the new name, but is concerned the nature of their ship cannot be hidden.
Ayotnom did his work before the Petals entered port. As the Petals head into the city he looks back and is please to see The Guilded Lilly is a ship hailing from Fargunia.

”Hey, how’s that pretty sister of yours?”
“Ugh. Don’t ask. She married a fella from the Knives, and I steer clear of him.”
}

You decide to head up to the Temple of Wardd. You can see the large Temple from most places, so even if it drops out of sight from time to time, you’re able to head in the right direction. The Petals get a few looks as they go, and it doesn't take a Sense Motive check to know that some of these looks seem to be sizing up your group, wondering silently what you're about.

From the docks, you pass that large, low building that someone said was the Free School on the left. On your right is Dockside where those taverns and inns were mentioned, and then one of the six towers. The road turns left and leads you into a large market area. It’s busy.

Moving past the market, Rolth’s sharp ears pick up a bit of a conversation. Highlight to display spoiler: {"The House of Keys provides for the widows and the orphans. Ya can’t trust that sorta stuff, so watch your purse around them.”}

Soon a road leads off from this market area, and the Temple of Wardd comes into full view. It is impressive not only for its size, but also because it is built, and maintained, and expanded in a seemingly haphazard manner You see expansions and additions here and there with different styles and construction techniques. But in spite of it all, it looks pretty good - it just seems to have all worked out somehow.

You see a large area in front of the temple, and there are games of chance here. Small amounts of money are won or lost, token amounts really. It seems that some come here to also win favors from others, as you see some agreement as to who won some service from another.

You hear phrases like,
All the best!
Fingers crossed.
Better luck next time!
Wardd’s blessing that things go well.
Best of luck!
Seek Wardd’s favor and win!
Live a lucky life and test your luck often!

Normally, you see these kinds of games of chance accompanied by various forms of alcohol, but you see a sign that says, No forms of strong drink permitted near the Temple. Fortune favors the bold and sharp of mind.

It can be hard to tell the Favored of Wardd from the gamblers, as their outfits seem somewhat unique to each priest as they move among those testing their luck, but they all wear a prominent holy symbol.

Wil sees others that wear the same holy symbol as he does. He asks to speak to the priests here as he is one himself, and the Petals are led into the temple. A somewhat officious and aloof man comes forward wearing new priestly robes beneath a somewhat tattered cloak. He tugs on his cloak as he regards Wil coolly for a moment. The man has a leather cup with dice in it. He gives the cup a shake and looks at the dice. ”Welcome and good fortune brother. Do you seek Wardd’s blessing this day?”

Direct questions don't seem to be getting us anywhere, and make people uncomfortable. I imagine they are just being cautious, as giving out information for free in a place like this could put them or us at risk. We need to think about ways to learn what we want without being so up front. Maybe we ask around saying we have a dangerous well paying job that needs doing, and need to find some brave souls to hire. might get the attention of a name adventuring group!

At the temple, Elyas watches the games of chance with interest. He is not well-versed in the lore of Wardd, but it is fascinating to see gambling in a place of worship, having seen many temples that would be very opposed to such behavior. Even mor einterestign to Elyas is the exchange of services as bets rather than coin

hmm... maybe that's how we get what we need! win it in dice games! But what would we have to offer in exchange on the betting floor? Elyas will bring this up with the others once they finish the conversation with the priest

"On the way in I heard about the Knives. They don't seem a friendly lot." Mak warned his friends as they approached the temple.

"Fortune favors the house." Mak said in an aside to Tsak as they passed the games of chance. "Haven't seen an honest game yet." he admitted to the large ranger. "My men used to get in all sorts back in the army. Had to bail more than one out by paying his debt and these Wardd gentlemen can't be much better if a debt is owed."

Once inside Mak stood a short distance back and watched the area. To an outsider it might look like his underlings were the ones conducting business though he wore no finery other than his regular gear. (Just to humor Tsak)

Supposedly, there are two ways to keep thieves from targeting you in a place like this. One is to have nothing of apparent value. The other is to be so conspicuous that they suspect trouble. This temple feel like that.

Tsak keep an eye out at the temple. He knows better than to enter into games of chance.
Falco is aware of the caution of the dock workers, and thinks a different environment may yield more information.
Elyas thinks about some way to draw out the locals. At the temple he’s quite fascinated with how gambling seems to be part of the culture at this temple.
Wil greets this priest, asking what the price is of a blessing and information here.
Mak shares that the Knives are not a friendly lot. He takes a dim view of both the temple and this gambling. He says that fortune favors the house here.
Kiwina says that fortune favors the prepared. He’s not impressed with either this city nor Temple. He’s wary here.
Ayotnom tries to get a read on the room.
Rolth shares that the House of Keys are rumored to help the widows and orphans here.

Wil asks the man in the nice robes and tattered cloak the price of a blessing and information.

The man regards him coolly. ”I am Brother Ralob. Who are you and where are you from? If it is a blessing you seek, well, the games are here for all to see if Wardd blesses them this day. Now information, that is a different matter. We are entrusted with information from time to time, as are all priests. What information do you seek?”

He spins a wheel, and it lands on 51, and you can see from the wheel this suggests donation of 51 gold.

There are a lot of questions you could ask him about this place, so not sure where all to go with this.

If you ask about Nevras Canthil, he says, ”I have heard the name, but ill rumors surround the man. This Temple cannot give you more information about him, nor do I want to know why you seek him. Perhaps one of the Houses knows more. Or perhaps they do not.”

Falco politely calls the priest out on what he knows, asking for more information. Ralob stiffens at the polite accusation.
Mak puts the 51 gold in the chance offering bowl.

Rolth chimes in, providing some support.
Kiwina can see the wheel Ralob rolled is not really a gamble so much as it is leaving the amount of the donation up to chance.

Brother Ralob regards the group thoughtfully for a moment. He says, ”I cannot say which house that person may be affiliated with. So unless you have other questions for me, I think we are done here.” Then he leans close to Wil and says, ”But I can have someone contact you later. Elyas will sit down at one of the gaming tables to gamble a bit, rolling a 7 seeking Wardd’s blessing. He also tries to get some information about the Tide from the locals here.
Falco shrugs as he listens.
Ayotnom follows along.
Kiwina wonders if the Petals should pursue contacting the Tide or seeking more information about Nevras Canthil. He figures Wil can lead them to the Tide.
Mak can’t remember the tavern he visited before here, and perhaps it was the drink at the time, or just time itself. He looks for respectable people that might be headed to the City Below.
Wil tells Brother Ralob the group plans to stay with the Tide in Moontown. Failing that, they will stay in the City Below. He tells Ralob he can be reached by leaving word at the House of Darts. Then he asks his friends where they should go next.
Tsak clarifies that the first plan is to find the Tide, and then seek the City Below.
Rolth is ready to seek out the Tide in Moontown.

Brother Ralob nods at where to find the Petals, but at Wil’s mention of the House of Darts, his eyes go wide for a moment and you see a muscle clench in his jaws. Still he nods agreement on how to contact you and that’s the last you see of him. Press him for more information, especially about The House of Darts, and you get a withdrawal born of fear and hostility - and nothing more.

Elyas rolls the dice, and a priest at the games informs him that the winds of luck can be fickle - better luck next time though. (Elyas’ roll of 7 earns him a -1 luck bonus, effectively canceling out his luckstone until the following morning at dawn.) Elyas does enjoy the low level gambling for a bit and learns a few things. Highlight to display spoiler: {”The Tide, eh. Well, they’re a force to be reckoned with indeed. Busybodies if you ask me. I think they’d have to side with a House or two to do that.”}

Passing through the market, Tsak feels a tug, and finds a young man was trying to cut the Ranger’s purse! Tsak is quick though, and has a hold of the man’s wrist. He twists his arm as he says, ”No, please mister - I don’t want no trouble. You misunderstood. I wasn’t taking nothing. Honest. Lemme go! Help!”

A number of people in the market look over for a moment, and then just as quickly ignore what’s going on. No one comes to his aid or seems to want to interfere. What does Tsak do with the young man who’s wrist he has a grip on? This kid’s scared, but maybe not quite as scared as he should be. He looks warily at the three big Taurs in the party, and there is a bit of fear there. Does Tsak let him go, drag him along, pummel him for his misdeeds?

Perception or Sense Motive DC 25 Highlight to display spoiler: {People are still watching your group and this boy, but being very discrete about it. They certainly don’t seem intent on intervening that you can tell. But they are watching.}

However you resolve this, you eventually continue on down to the manor house occupied by the Tide. You see a fine, big house, with a gated inner courtyard. The gate is closed, but there is no lock. Attached to the house next to and outside this gate, you see tavern. Above the door is a carved battering ram, coated in butter with several men trying to hold the slippery ram. Peering inside, you see a few patrons, half of which are halflings. There are two gnomes in the corner, a man and a woman. They look at you as you come in.

As you go in, Falco is very pleased to see a few higher chairs that would let a small character sit comfortably at the tables. Falco is also surprised to smell some familiar smells - this place serves halfling food! It smells good in here, and the place looks pretty clean. A halfling in the corner seems to be practicing on a small lute.

A human walks up to your group as you enter. He’s a young man, tall and thin, with sandy red hair and blue eyes. He is dressed in halfling-style clothes: fine shirt, waistcoat, shortened trousers, and bare feet. Of course, his feet lack the thick soles and curly hair of regular halfling feet; they are narrow, and pale, and a little dirty.

He wipes his hands on his apron as he says, ”Greetings. I’m Tombo, Tombo Greenhand. Welcome to the Buttering Ram. How can I help you?”

Ayotnom challenges the first onlooker, asking if they’ve never seen a taur before. Later at the tavern, he says he is looking for information but would like to eat first.
Wil encourages leniency on the pick pocket. Later, as Tombo greets the Petals he becomes tongue tied and has no questions for the man.

Kiwina looks around the tavern, asking Wil of any of his friends were halflings.

Woven mats are laid down for Kiwina and Rolth should they wish to either stand or recline at the table with the others. They clearly don’t often have taurus here, but were prepared. A taller chair is brought over for Falco.

They get some nods from some of the patrons as they enter, particularly from the two gnomes in the corner.

Tombo replies to Falco, ”Greetings little owl man and welcome. I’m the proprietor here.” To Ahyotnom he smiles as he says, ”Well, I may not have the information you seek, so I don't know about that. But I do have some good food if I do say so myself, and plenty of it. So let’s see about taking care of what I'm good at.” Soon some lovely mutton and vegetables are brought over, Along with a plate of fried chops of some sort - port probably. He brings plenty of a couple kinds of bread, along with some cheeses and fresh fruit. The ale is cool and refreshing.

This place just smells nice, and you feel at ease here as you eat. There are a couple other helpers here, but Tombo seems to be the one serving the Petals directly.

A bit later, a young woman enters humming to herself as she goes over to talk to Tombo about something. They appear to be friends, but you sense no intimacy between them. She notices the Petals, but shows no interest in the strange group. She gives Tombo a package wrapped in paper and twine with a tag on it. She pulls up a stool and talks casually with the man.

Rolth’s ability far exceeds that of the little halfling. He plays along a bit, but is soon encouraging Rolth as the more accomplished performer while he claps along. The two soon find a song both know and the halfling sings heartily while Rolth plays.

The place almost seems normal, and there is a distinct absence of the furtive stares and occasional evaluating glances you experienced in much of Dirt City.

Mak brought his own instrument around. After all he'd brought it for just such an occasion, but like the hafling Mak was hardly in the same class of performer as the taur so he resigned himself to helping his friend with the melody. After a few failed attempts, Mak found his stride, but after a tune or two he bowed to the other two performers and stepped away.

Perhaps it was his concentration on the room that made his efforts less than stellar. Perhaps it was the thought of the urchin pawing at their possessions, the whole thing made Mak want to do an inventory of his things. For the moment however he resisted that urge as he put his gloves back on and grabbed up a mug of ale.

"You arn't a terrified dog. Remember that runt of a dog you had as a child?" Wil says as Cicero.
"I think his name was Eeek. Well, that's not you," his voice rising but maybe hidden within the noise of the tavern.
"You know Tombo, go talk to him," Cicero adds.
Wil, always embarrassed at his outbursts, blushes but the talk changes him and he follows Tombo to talk to him privately.

"Hey, friend. It's been a moment. When is the last time you heard from the Tide? My friends and I traveled from Taur Isles and we are looking for some shelter and information. I'm hoping as proprietor you can give us a hand in some way."

Mak plays with Rolth and the halfling for a bit, and then bows out of the performance.
Wil gets in an argument with himself, and then approaches Tombo asking privately,
"Hey, friend. It's been a moment. When is the last time you heard from the Tide? My friends and I traveled from Taur Isles and we are looking for some shelter and information. I'm hoping as a proprietor you can give us a hand in some way."
Falco compliments the tavern, asking how the man comes to cater to halfling so well.
Elyas enjoys the food and decides to relax a bit.
Rolth plays and relaxes, waiting to see what Wil turns up.
Tsak is glad to have a respite here.
Kiwina does his best to read the room.
Ayotnom thanks their host, and says he hopes the Tide will have the answers the Petals seek.

Kiwina and Mak, and perhaps others can see that there are some patrons here, but the woman who came in with the package and the two gnomes have a presence about them in this place.

Tombo answers Falco, ”Well, I lived near a halfling settlement for a while. And I found their food to be hearty and homey, if you know what I mean. I always figured halfling culture was usually ignored and dismissed, but if folk just got to know ‘em and lived among ‘em, they might see what they were missing. So I decided to open a place like that. Sure, some folk here turn their nose up at it, but those that know, know. And it’s enough that I got folk here that appreciate what I do. I’m glad you like it.”

After the meal, Wil asks privately about the Tide. Tombo regards Wil for a moment, weighing something. Then Ayotnom is a bit more direct.

Tombo looks serious. He says to his helpers, ”Caloryn, Jase, watch things.”

To the Petals he says, ”Come with me.”

He gestures to the woman and the two gnomes to follow as he leads the Petals out of the tavern, and through a gate into a locked inner courtyard.

Closing the gate, he gestures to the woman and the two gnomes that followed him. ”This is Sunny, and these two are Jasper and Pose.” Sunny nods. She’s young and rather pretty with blonde hair and blue eyes, and a sharp eye will notice her plain clothes are expertly fitted and sewn. She nods at the Petals. Jasper says, ”We are pleased to meet you but,” as Pose finishes his sentence, ”but the Tide are not here. And we do not know you. Wil maybe, but not you all.”

The courtyard is big and otherwise empty except for a stout dwarven woman in the distance moving some tanned hides into a doorway.

Tombo turns to Wil. ”And, beggin yer pardon Mr. Wil, but we never really know how many of you there are in there. And that still makes folk nervous, you know? I don’t know if that’s why you left the Tide or were asked to leave, that ain’t none of my business. But they’re not here and it’s not my place, er, our place, to say their whereabouts, see?”

”As for a place to stay, well, we can recommend an inn or two, but I’m afraid I can’t let you stay here at the Tide’s house. Not my place to do so.”

(I’ll speculate on some questions and maybe save a week's worth of posts.)

”This place? I hear it was once a rich merchant’s house, then a secret Ga’al temple and rakshasa lair before the Tide cleansed it and took it over for their own. But it’s a fine house, and the Tide allow a few businesses here, like my Tavern and Sunny’s sewing school, and there’s a leatherworking shop operated by Mazea Ironthane.” He gestures toward the stout dwarven women in the distance.

”Ga’al? Nah, Ga’al’s not worshiped in such a fiercely independent place as Dirt City. The Tide cleared out what was here. In Asildur maybe, but not here.”

“Rakshasa? I don’t know much, but I hear tell they were trying to infiltrate the Houses. Might have succeeded, if not for the Tide clearing them out.”

“The Houses? Well, there’s six of them - The House of Keys, the House of Knives, the House of Teeth, the House of Cloaks, the House of Wolves, and the House of Darts. Some refer to this place as the House of Tides, but it’s not a House in that way. The Tide have an agreement with the Houses and the Prince - they don’t interfere in city affairs, and the Houses don’t mess with the Moon Quarter here.”

“Temples? Well, there’s the big Temple of Wardd of course. Worth a visit. And there are some shrines here and there. One to Ffloy, but that priest is usually drunk. Go figure.”

“The City Below? Well, you can go there I guess, but it’s mostly just families down there. There are some inns and taverns I suppose. I doubt they’d have any information you’re seeking though.”

“Nevras Canthil? I think I heard the name, but not really sure who that is.”

Finally, Sunny speaks up. She folds her amrs as she says, "Well, you all seem to have a lot of questions. But who are you? Why do you have so many questions? Who is Nevras Canthil, and why are you looking for him? You know so little about Dirt City, but you’ve come here for a reason - what’s that reason?”

Tombo seems a bit nervous that Sunny is asking such direct questions. The two gnomes however seem focused on your answers. You suspect those two are often overlooked, but miss little.

Mak stepped forward a little as he glanced Kiwina's way in apology. These people seemed the right sort and they'd been trusting enough.

"We are known in the Taur Isles as the Eight Petaled Rose and we are investigating a conspiracy of sorts in the isles that have lead us to this man." Mak admitted without giving any details. "We thought to seek out the Tide due to Wil's former association with them since we didn't know who we could trust here. For myself I'm grateful to the Tide for blasting that son of a begonia Ga'al. I've a deep seated purple passion against that imposter and knowing the Tide rid the city of him makes them a friend of mine without meeting them. As for Canthil, we suspect he's up to something and wanted to confirm our suspicions by talking to him. We've no current plans to harm the man, we just wanted to ask him some questions."

Elyas thinks back to all the times people randomly found the Petals and asked them to solve something, often ending in much danger. Recently with a dragon pretending to be a helpless lad...

"though I guess I can see why they might do that. Anyways, do you know how we might get them a message? this is their place, so is there a way we could leave something with you and you could pass it on to one of them? Some deeper plot tying them together. Canthil is said to know the unnamed one behind some necromantic mischief in the Taur Isles. We're here to find out what he knows, then follow wherever the leads might take us. Probably perilous, but that's what heroes are for, am I right? Does that help bring anything to mind? Or would it be of interest to the tide, what with their own deeds against evil conspiracies here?" Rolth tries to gauge any unspoken reactions from the locals, especially those watchful gnomes.

Falco makes small talk until things start moving faster.
Mak, Elyas, Rolth and Ayotnom reveal progressively more about who the Petals are and why they are here. Mak is quite charming in his approach. And then theres the silver tongued Rolth. There is talk of necromancers and dragons. Ayotmon asks what they may know of local necromancers. The Petals seem a bit offended that they cannot reach the Tide, and Elyas asks how the Petals may contact them.
Wil is a bit taken aback at Tombo’s mention of why he may have left the Tide. He fears he may have caused trouble by sending a message to the House of Darts. (The DM is not aware of any such message.)
Kiwina says nothing, but watches carefully for reactions,
Tsak watches and listens. Esmerelda makes an appearance.

At Esmerelda’s appearance, the two small gnomes take a wary step back. You don’t see any other wild animals in this town.

Sunny smiles a half smile at Mak. ”So you folks talk of roses and begonias and purple passion. Pretty talk for a hardened bunch of adventurers. You boys really know how to put the romance in necromancy.” She is flirting a bit with Mak.

At Wil’s mention of the House of Darts, Jasper says, The Darts. Ugh, you couldn’t have picked,” Pose finishes his sentence, ”a worse group to have truck with. Why are you sending them messages? Tombo, they may not be safe to have around.”

Tombo brushes Pose’s concern aside. ”Yeah, nobody like the Darts, but they won’t interfere here. Them least of all.”

“How can you reach the Tide? You can leave any message you like, but I can’t say when they’ll get it. You can spend the rest of the afternoon and evening here if you wish, but accommodations you’ll have to find elsewhere.”

Sunny turns to Tombo. ”Now, don’t forget the package. I’ve some things I need to deal with.” As she turns to go, she gives the Petals a long look. ”Good luck your necromancer you lot.” She goes out the gate headed off somewhere.

Tombo ushers the Petals out of the gated courtyard, though the two gnomes stay. Jasper waves to them as Pose tugs at his arm and they head towards a door in the courtyard, suggesting they may live here. You no longer see the dwarven women in the courtyard, so you suspect she has reason to stay here too.

The Petals may have more questions. But whether they do or not, they decide they’ve learned a good deal about the Dirt City, and they did tell Brother Ralob to seek them here. So they stay for a bit. The Buttered Ram is indeed relaxing. Some patrons come and go. Esmerelda curls up by the fire. Most seem a bit wary of the big cat, but some will ask about here and offer some pets or scraps of food.

In the evening, the Petals plan to make their way back to the Rose as the safest accommodations they know. The Petals’ bill is due eventually, and they owe about 5 gold.

Just as they’re getting up to leave a small halfling woman enters the door. She looks around, catches Tombo’s eye and nods to the man. Tombo nods back cautiously.

Then she spies the Petals and walks straight over to them. She is dressed in some nice looking leather armor and a green cloak. Not fancy, but nice. She says, ”Ah, just who I’m looking for, I think. Word has it you’re looking for information. Perhaps we can work something out that gets you what you want.” In a lower voice, she continues. ”My name is Drola and I am with the House of Keys. I would like to discuss whom you seek, but not here. Will you please, come with me to the Keyhole where we can talk in private?” If you ask, you learn the Keyhole is simply the area of the city near the Tower of the Keys, an area under their control.

She will not answer more questions here. If the party refuses to go with her, they may return to the Rose and you can skip the rest for now. You’ll have a quiet sleep aboard the ship and wake in the morning.

—-------------------------------------------------------------

If you follow her, the Petals step out into the cooling evening air. She leads you up into the city.

Perception DC 28:Highlight to display spoiler: {You are being followed by two male humans and a female child about 13 years old, all trying not to be noticed. But Drola leads you past this to another building, a non-descript doorway, where you all go in, including the three people that were following you, two humans and a seeming human girl. You find yourselves in a simple 20’x30’ room.

”Now. As I mentioned, I am Drola Slipfoot. These three are my friends. We are with the House of Keys, and we like to see Dirt City remain a peaceful place. Mostly. I hear you are asking about Neveras Canthil. Why? What do you want with a taxidermist that likes to keep a low profile?”

Depending on the answer, she continues, ”Hmm. This Neveras Canthil does not work with us. He works with another House. I can tell you what that house is and where you can find him, if you’ll do me a little favor first. You see, the House of Teeth has smuggled a creature in here. We’re not sure what it is. Rumors are that whatever it is, it will help them with their smuggling operations. And that’s where you come in. If you’ll just do a little investigation for us, we’ll help you with your Neveras Canthil problem. Do we have a deal?”

When Sunny started flrting with Mak his eyebrows and expression was suddenly suave and cool as he reached out to lean on a non existent wall. Naturally his hand met air and he nearly fell as he lost his balance. He unsuccessfully tried to hide the motion and ended up just standing there shuffling his feet uncomfortably for the rest of the encounter.

Later in the Tavern Mak was quiet for a long time as he relived his shame over and over again in his mind. When he did speak it wasn't on the subject of women, women, or women though his mind was full of that subject.

When the hafling thief Drola arrived, he assumed she was a thief...werent' they all? He readily accompanied her to the Keyhole given Tombo's greeting to her when she entered, but he was alert and ready.

Later at the Keyhole Mak was oblivious of any goings on around them as he took in the sights of the city. It wasn't until they were safely sequestered in the meeting room that Mak woke up enough to join the conversation.

"Grovas" Mak said with certainty. "Canthil has stuffed and animated Grovas body. That's got to be a gruesome sight." Mak said to no one in particular as his mind raced with the possibilities that existed with a necromancer taxidermist and a dragon carcass. "I really hope I'm wrong, I'm not too excited about encountering an undead dragon." Mak said to the other petals and Drola.

As for deals, he let the more senior members of the group commit them to that course of action.

Ultimately, it wasn't Neveras Canthil they necessarily sought, but someone he knew how to contact. "We think he can put us in touch with someone who could explain some troubling activity back home. Like you, we like our home to be a peaceful place." Only they didn't have a name to give. That could be a problem when they find Canthil.

"A little investigation? Just find out what the creature is? I think we stand out a bit here. It might not be discrete."

Hmm, alluring vixens, mysterious women clad in leather. Things are definitely looking interesting, thinks Tsak.
He walks with Drola, Esmerelda beside him. It's a lead, its what we came here for. The followers are easily spotted and not really a surprise.
Mak's leap of logic certainly is! A re-animated Grovas would be an interesting 'vehicle' for smugglers. It's not impossible, but it is one of Mak's wilder ideas. Tsak is content to wait for a lot more info before he jumps to any conclusions.

Tsak joins the Petals huddle as they decide, ever so discretely, whether to take on Drola's mission or not.
Certainly some of us can be more discrete than others. But we need a plan. Perhaps the less discrete can create a diversion whilst the stealthier ones have a look around this house of teeth place.

DM Mark - The Plan

Mak is a bit thrown off balance by Sunny’s flirtation. He recovers a bit in the cool evening air as the Petals walk to the Keyhole. As Drola lays out her request, he suggests that Nevris probably stuffed and animated Grovas dead body.
Falco follows along. He notices, as to some others, the discrete followers, pointing out the disguise one of them wears.
Wil agrees to the quest presented by Drola.
Kiwina notes that the party seeks Neveras Canthil as a step in finding someone else. He is concerned that a group such as the Petals is hardly a discrete group to do Drola’s investigations.
Rolth is amused when Flaco calls out the disguised halfling, noting that Falco wears a much better disguise.
Ayotnom says, "Do you know how whatever this creature is might help your rivals with their smuggling operation? Does it provide a unique form of transport or swallow hole a bunch of contraband? I'd like to know more of what I'm walking into with respect to this mystery creature."
Tsak is starting to like this place. He suggests that perhaps in this investigation, that some of the Petals serve as a distraction while the stealthier ones have a look around the House of Teeth.

Drola listens carefully as the Petals discuss. She smiles as she answers Ayotnom, ”Now, if I knew what the creature is or why they want it, I wouldn’t need you. I’ll be glad for any information you can provide.”

She provides more details.

”I’ll need you to break into a warehouse owned by the House of Teeth. It’s locked and guarded, but you look pretty capable. Find out what sort of creature they have in there and report back to me. See if you can find out who the creature answers to and see if you can tell what this creature might have to do with their smuggling operation. And if you should happen to kill that creature, well, so much the better. Bring me a piece of it if you do. Either way, we need to know what they have. But you cannot mention me or the House of Keys, understand? A House acting against another House poses a bigger problem, yeah?

“Once you have information on what’s in that warehouse, come back here and let me know what you found. I’ll pay you 5,000 gold pieces for this information, and twice that if you can bring back a piece of the thing. And as far as I’m concerned, anything you find in there is yours as well, so long as it poses no threat to the City.

“Breaking into a warehouse? Well, it’s not exactly illegal since there’s not really a law against it to enforce. And while it might make them mad, no one will shed a tear for the Teeth.

“They’re no angels. It’s come to light that in a recent war between nearby merfolk and sahaugin, the Teeth supplied both sides, keeping the war going. They’ve trafficked in persons, kidnapping Grubbers and undesirables and selling them to a Rakshasa ‘farm’ supplying meat. And they smuggled in ‘heart-seeds’ for Ga’al priests to control their enemies.

“So you can see why we want to know what the Teeth are keeping secret this time.

“I can provide a map to the place, since I won’t be there to lead you. It is a warehouse, and you’ll need to know which one. If you like, I can arrange for the two guards out front to be distracted for about 10 minutes. Shall we say, tomorrow night?”

They dismissed him when he predicted a dragon was behind the last mystery they encountered. Let them dismiss him again....they'd see, or by the false gods he was wrong. He hoped the latter, but to his mind the pieces fit too well.

As each petal agreed to join in this endeavor Mak nodded his agreement as well. He did wonder who among them was stealthy as he hadn't seen any evidence of sneakiness from any of them. He was probably sneakier than any of them if he applied himself properly to the task. Then there was that invisibility potion he'd recently purchased...

when the topic of how to breach the warehouse is raised he asks the halfling woman:
"what kind of magical defenses does a warehouse around here have? I assume it is more than just a few guards. Do they have protections against invisible people, or dimension locks, protection spells, or the like? what do you protect your own facilities with?

Out of earshot of the keys, he speaks his opinion to the Petals
"I can certainly help us get in undetected if this is a path we want to pursue. invisibility, teleportation, summoning, flight and so on. the question is whether we want to do it. Houses moving against each other is against their rules, would it be possible to get what we want by trading the information that the house of Keys is trying to make a move? or perhaps we find another way that doens't put us in the middle of a shadow war between crime families? just a thought...

Mak was sure there was going to be an undead dragon involved. But Mak is willing to work this his friends to do what needed to be done.
Elyas tries to reassure Mak that if they defeated the dragon, they can defeat an undead version. He asks Drola what kind of magical defenses, guards or other things the Petals should expect at this place. He tries to secretly suggest that the Petals could instead work with the House of Teeth, telling them the House of Keys plan.
Mak is quick to remedy the situation, assuring Drola that the Petals always explore all options, but they will surely keep her confidences in this.
Kiwina also reassures Drola. He asks about the warehouse defences.
Wil is deeply offended that the Teeth may have been abusing the Grubbers. He says he’s in with the plan.
Tsak says that distracting the guards may be useful. He suggests some reconnaissance, and also visiting the local taverns. For information of couse.
Rolth is in with the plan. He wonders what sort of magical stealth the Petals may have.
Falco points out that he is quite stealthy naturally.
Ayotnom says he’s not good at stealth, but he excels at killing.

When Elyas tries to secretly suggest working with the House of Teeth instead, Drola seems to overhear. Afterall, this is a single room with nowhere to go. Drola’s look suggests she is not happy about this, but she waits to see what the others say. She seems satisfied that the Petals come to a consensus to work with her.

The Tide addressed that problem. And yes, they were farming people for meat. So if this is another nefarious creature, and you do bring proof you killed it, well, I have another magic item I’ll throw in as a reward. Of course, if it’s not a bad creature, it’s up to you what you do with it. I just want to know what they have.”

“As for the warehouse, this one is a bit unusual in that it’s a large warehouse with only one entrance, so whatever they have in there is locked up pretty tight. Locked in or just to keep prying eyes out, we don’t know. Like I said, there are a couple of guards. Likely there to call an alert. And like I said, we can pull them away for about 10 minutes if you wish. This’d be best done at night. It’s in Teeth territory, so darkness will help.

“We don’t know what defenses it might have, but I’d expect it’d be warded against teleportation and divination magics. That’s what I’d do. People occasionally come and go from there, usually important folks in the Teeth hierarchy. Most traffic is in the daytime that we know of. It’s hard to get eyes on the place since it’s in Smuggler City, which is what they call the Teeth’s area. That’ll also make it hard for you to do much reconnaissance without raising suspicions.”

She provides you with a map to the warehouse.

”So, when do you plan to do this, and when do you want those guards distracted?”

Wil accepts any help the House of Keys can offer, and suggests coming up with a plan.

Falco wonders if they should use stealth or force, confident in his abilities to remain undetected.

Elyas doesn't want to kick off a house war or be captured by the House of Teeth. and figures a stealthy recon is their best option.

Rolth suggests using the city below as a way to sneak in.

KIwina suggests if they split the party, the scouts need to have a means to escape, and asks if the teleportation wards work both ways.

Ayotnom admits he doesn't know Invisibility yet, but offers to purchase a scroll and add it to his spell book.

Mak claims he has a potion of invisibility and an escape route. he claims he could use the escape route to enter, but than would lose his exit strategy as it's a once a day thing.

Tsak reminds everyone that they are visitors, and their presence should cause suspicion. He suggests that he and Falco sneak around the undercity to see if they can find an infiltration point, while the rest meander towards the warehouse.

WIl suggest finding a tavern or residence near the warehouse they can set up in as a means to stake out the place.

*******************************

When talk of using the sewers as an infiltration point arises, Drola says, "You are a sharp lot, do you always look for this kind of work around? I could use some minds like yours. Anyway, I can tell you're not from around here, as anyone who is a local knows that all the entrances to the sewers, except the ones used for coming and going, have long since been sealed. The occupants did this early on as they moved to the sewers in an attempt to find a safer home. If there was such a way, we would have exploited it long ago. That said, your half-orc friend makes a good point. As foreigners, you can travel freely without causing too much commotion, or raising any suspicion, which is why I reached out to you in the first place.

As far as the teleportation warding, I am only speculating about it's presence, but even though the Teeth are a nefarious lot, they aren't stupid, and one should assume such a thing would be there. as far as whether it goes both ways, I would say that depends on what the creature is, and as such I wouldn't know. As I said, I can give a 10 min distraction, which should give you time to deal with the 2 guards, that are always on duty, and enter undetected. After that your on your own. so do you want to act tonight, or perhaps tomorrow night may be better? Remember when I say on your own, I mean on your own."

In response to Mak, elyas says
there are a number of spells that are loosely categorized as teleportation, aside form the spell we actually call teleportation. all use dimensional travel to shorten the distance between two points on this plane. generally if they have used wards that prevent teleportation it will also prevent dimension door, my dimensional step ability, and other similar means.

That is not to say we can't try... 'sometimes the simplest solution' and all that. but a house trying to hide something important in a city like this is pretty likely to invest in some dimensional lock spells.

If we do have to deal with them, Rolth notes that he can use his fascinate ability on both of them and distract them for an indefinite period of time, although it is not guaranteed to work. "Does anyone have a spell or time that would increase the chances of the fascinate ability working? I will boost my charisma to amplify the power of the enchantment, but any other help would be good."

As far as invisibility, Mak and Rolth have potions, and there is also an unclaimed one in the party loot. That should be plenty to get a small team of skulkers into the building during whatever distraction is accomplished.

He agrees that tomorrow night would be better than tonight, allowing more preparation. He asks Drola, "Is there anything near the warehouse that strangers to town might find interesting, even just an unusual shop? A couple of things, if you know them. Would we be better off checking the neighborhood out in advance, or can you give us clear direction how to get there?" By clear, Kiwina means either something in writing or something that he can memorize well enough to repeat back before they leave.

Falco lays out a plan.

Mak thinks the distraction will draw away the guards, and suggests if someone gets inside, they will be able to open the door for everyone else, before asking Elyas if dimensional door would be canceled by a teleportation ward.

Elyas explains that their are several spells and spell-like abilities that function like teleportation, and all would be canceled by dimensional lock spells, including Dimensional Door. He suggests a recon mission, disguised as tourists, tonight, then hitting the warehouse tomorrow night.

Rolth is confused about the distraction and the guards, and asks for clarification. He offers to use his fascinate ability to deal with the guards, and asks if anyone has a spell or ability of any kind to boost the strength of the fascinate. He points out that they have plenty of invisibility options.

Kiwina suggests he may be able to help Rolth, and asks if there are any attractions in the area that they could use to help maintain their cover. He also asks for some solid directions.

Tsak feels that the sewer thing makes sense, and is ready to hit the road for the recon mission.

Ayotnom heads out for a quick shopping spree.

Wil is open for whatever.

*******************************

Drola looks at Rolth for a second with a look of confusion on her face, then her face lightens up as she realizes the source of his confusion. "I'm sorry if I confused you, The area around the warehouse is always a busy place, 24 hours a day, it seems. No distraction short of openly invading, or torching their headquarters would be able to draw the 2 guards away. Neither one of those would be prudent, though I do think it would be fun, the torching not the invading, open war among the houses is not something I would like to entertain. The distraction won't likely draw away the guards, but it should clear out the rest of those in the vicinity.

In answer to Kiwina's questions, Drola produces a map of the area, and points out a few locations that may be of interest. [b]"On the way towards the House of Teeth's turf, you will pass the statue of Violet and Arturo. It's a memorial to a young couple that met a grisly and public demise, which changed early Dirt City and led to the no violence rule in the city below. Also I've heard that there is a tavern across from the warehouse that serves amazing fried chicken, and has Brock's Best Beer on tap. Of course I've never been there, as it's in Teeth territory, but I've heard the place has good eats, and everyone knows about the quality of Brock's."

She than hands the map to Kiwina and asks, "So what time do you want the distraction tomorrow? I suggest sometime after midnight."

you say we should go after midnight. is the area still going to be crowded that late? this place stays up way later than I would have expected... the later the better though, less chance of being seen. what will the distraction be, so we can be watching for it?

Elyas can go for some chicken and conversation, he suggests Rolth butter up the guards by buying them a pint. He is shocked that such a place would be active even so late, and asks what the distraction will be.

Falco is ready anytime after fried chicken.

Wil is in favor of chicken and a cup of coffee or tea, but feels he should give up booze.

Mak waits for the plan to come together, while considering ways to help protect his friends.

Kiwina isn't sure if they should checkout the area tonight or tomorrow, but he too would like to know what the distraction will be. As he waits to see what his friends prefer, he ponders what spells would be useful tomorrow.

Rolth is in favor of some nosh, and getting the lay of the land in the process. He says he will attempt to fascinate the guards, but suggests they have a non-lethal backup plan. He suggests using disguises, and wonders if anyone could disguise them.

Tsak's appetite almost makes his decision for him, but he checks himself. He suggests checking out the area now, and then infiltrating the warehouse at 2 am tomorrow. He asks is there is a way to contact Drola if needed, suggesting that it would only be a contingency, as the less contact the better.

Ayotnom scribes a spell into his spellbook.

**********************************

Drola answers the most pressing question first, "We will start a small fire in an abandoned building a block away from the warehouse. out of fear that it may spread, everyone will run to the place, to put it out. Don't worry, we are well aware of what can happen if a fire gets out of hand, and one of my mages, a water elemental sorcerer, will be well hidden in the area to put it out, if things get out of hand. As far as disguises, I have people who could disguise your humans and half-orc, but we don't get a lot of taurs here in Dirt City so you three will stand out no matter what we do, and I wouldn't know where to begin with trying to disguise a bird-man.

Here is my suggestion, head over to the warehouse now, under the guise of tourists, and get a bite to eat at the tavern. Then tomorrow you can use the excuse that the chicken was so good you had to go back for a second meal, and while you are preparing to place your order, the distraction will go off, and you can do your thing."

Halfway through the door Mak stopped and looked at Tsak with a disapproving sniff as he lifted his nose. "Looks like I'm buying." he said as he exited the room.

Mak didn't travel with all his money. He'd left most of it aboard the Rose with only a smattering of coins in his purse for incidentals while he was here in this thieves world. He estimated he had about 100 gold pieces, maybe a handful more than that, on his person. Should be plenty for dinner plus a sizable gratuity to the server.

Like the others Mak's magical attire would single him out as a wealthy individual. A masterwork and magical purple and gold cape, adamantine chain shirt, or rings and necklaces all would make him stand out and Tsak's play at deference would fit with that image. He had however intentionally not worn anything that might identify him as an Aisilduran nobleman, though his manner of speech and accent might give him away since he wasn't very good at hiding it. (Bluff +6, Roll 11) His plan was to downplay his connection to his homeland and try to take the attention off his four legged friends.

When they arrived at the warehouse and subsequently the fried chicken place Mak made a show of gawping at the surroundings much as any tourist might. The display served two purposes in his mind. First it gave him an excuse for casing the area and getting a better feel for what was where. Adjacent alleys, rooftops, structures, etc. Second his loitering about gave his friends a chance to do the same while waiting impatiently on him to get to moving.

Once at the tavern Mak made a show of buying for his friends and regardless of the quality of the food would make it known he intended to return to sample some of their other items.

OOC: If Mak has to use his Cape of the Montebank to dimension door closer/away from the warehouse he wants to be able to set his destination correctly.

Ayotnom can cast invisibility now, and lets his friends know.

Kiwina thinks the only way to disguise the taurs would be via illusion, and since he can't do anything about that, he is fine with going with the plan. He's ready to go.

Tsak is eager to get going, and he forces himself to play the role of the tourist.

Mak realizes that they all look like a bunch of wealthy individuals, but he makes an attempt to down play his heritage. He buys for his friends putting on the airs of a tourist with coin.

*******************************

Drola nods and turns away, leaving the Petals to do there recon. The Petals head out of Keys territory towards Teeth territory, making a show of stopping to see the sites.

As Drola pointed out, on the map, you walk past the Memorial of Violet and Artuso which is a statue of an attractive couple, displayed in such a way as to trigger emotions of tragedy and loss, and you get an understanding of why so many fled to the sewers, and established the no violence law down below.

As you enter the location of the warehouse, you see that the place is indeed a hub of activity. Besides the warehouse you are investigating, there are several other warehouses, with people coming and going, mostly hauling goods to and from the warehouses. It is easy to make out the warehouse in question. Besides being marked on the map, it is the only one with guards posted, and no activity seems to be happening there. The building is made of stone with no windows, and seemingly only one door. Across the street, the tavern Drola mentioned is a hub of activity in of itself. The place is not full to capacity, but it is definitely bustling. It seems the place is well liked by the locals. The sign above the door depicts a rooster standing in front of a stove frying what appears to be chicken parts. There is no name on the sign, just the "artwork". Inside the place is a simple location, with no fancy or pretentious decor. Just your typical working class pub. As you take a seat, at a table, a very attractive half-elf lass comes to take your order. She is wearing a low cut dress which overtly displays her ample cleavage, and it is clear she dresses for tips. Looking around, the rest of the wait staff, though of various races, are all similarly dressed, and of similar levels of attractiveness.

Seeing a table full of obviously wealthy individuals, the lass turns on the charm and sticks out her chest, giving everyone a good view of what her momma gave her, all the while giving off an air of you can look but you better not touch. "What can I get you gentlemen?"

Just an FYI, Brock's Best Beer, is one of a handful of adult beverages that have Wold-wide fame, so it's safe to say that everyone has heard of it, even if they have never sampled it.

Elyas nonchalantly walks near the warehouse, and ponders using some magic during the distraction, just to experiment. He realizes that some consider magic a crutch, but it sure simplifies things sometimes. Elyas orders the highly acclaimed fried chicken.

Falco asks if the chicken is spicy or mild, he also asks about side dishes.

Mak orders a round of ale for his friends, giving them a brief moment as the waitress retrieves the Brock's. He thinks it would be nice to know who is associated with the warehouse, and would like to know the people better.

Kiwina suggests Mak invites others to join them if he wishes to get to know the other patrons. He also wishes to try the chicken and the Brock's

Wil asks about the guarded warehouse, cracking a joke in the process.

Rolth is fine with spicy chicken, and orders a bunch, as well as some Brock's He nearly chokes when Wil asks about the warehouse.

Tsak thinks the waitress would lead to jail time, but orders on chicken and beer. He ponders the warehouse as he waits for his meal.

Ayotnom places his order.

**********************************************

As Elyas wanders near the Warehouse, he notices the guards stiffen up a bit. They don't say anything, but the Mage realizes that they are obviously suspicious of newcomers getting so close to the warehouse in their charge. once Elyas walks away, he notices them relax again.

At the tavern, the waitress answers the chicken question, "You can order the chicken in hot, medium, or mild, and our sides include a bowl of small tubes made from flour, egg, and water, that are boiled and mixed with melted cheese. the chef calls the dish Macaroni and Cheese. You can also get mashed tubers covered in gravy, a creamy salad made from cabbage that the chef calls Colelaw, as well as red beans cooked with bacon and served over rice. and a tuber dish that Chef Jo-Jo named after himself. He cuts tubers into wedges, dredges them in the same coating he uses to cover the fried chicken and then deep fries them until golden brown."

When Wil asks about the warehouse, The waitress gives a concerned look, as the color drains from her lovely face. She leans in even closer and whispers, "Your not from around here, but you should know that that warehouse belongs to the House of Teeth, and you are currently in Teeth territory. Best not ask too many questions about their operations, the House of Teeth don't take kindly to people sticking their noses into their business, and you are likely to end up with a slit throat if you do." After the waitress shares her warning, she takes your orders and heads to the kitchen to place your orders.

Rolth and Kiwina pick up on the fact that she seems truly concerned for your well being, and the warning was given as a result of he concern. At first all Kiwina notices is people enjoying a pint or an evening meal, but when Wil asks about the warehouse, he notices a few patrons look up, only to go back to what ever they were doing after they see who's talking. Kiwina is pretty sure that mention of the warehouse by strangers brought a similar reaction from them as it did the waitress. He doesn't see anyone take any actions, and Kiwina believes all is well.

As the warehouse comes up again he keeps an eye for anyone watching them too closely or leaving too quickly.

Falco likes the list of sides and the beer. He takes note when Wil mentions the warehouse.

Elyas engages in some people watching as he tries to decipher the difference between normal folk and members of the House of Teeth.

Wil is disappointed that he didn't get better info, but isn't surprised. He tries to cover his potential faux pas, and asks his friends how they should plan.

Mak informs the waitress that Wil has issues, that kind that require divine help, and asks her forgiveness. He offers to buy a round for the house.

Ayotnom checks out the waitress's body language, and keeps an eye on the prize.

Rolth tells Wil they don't need to plan for dessert, all they have to do is ask what's on the menu. He hopes that's enough to draw away any suspicion, until they can discuss things in their private chambers.

Tsak realizes that if things go sideways, they will be the prime suspects. He waits for the food to arrive.

Kiwina realizes they got the information they came for and refuses to talk shop until they are back on the Rose. In the meanwhile he enjoys his meal.

************************************

The waitress nods her head understandably when Mak explains Wil's mental state, and simply says, "Touched or not, remember to stay clear of Teeth affairs, you'll live longer that way." When he offers to buy the house a round, everyone cheers, and the place seems to go back to the way it was before Wil mentioned the warehouse. Whether or not any Teeth members are in the house is impossible to tell, but things seem to be in the clear. The waitress gives off a vibe of genuine concern, and you surmise that she is a kind soul who doesn't want to see anyone get hurt.

The waitress leaves and comes back about 15 min later carrying a huge platter of steaming fried chicken, along with whatever sides were ordered. The food is indeed amazing, and you understand why the place is so busy. After your meal, you start heading back towards the Rose, and as you are passing a dark ally way, he hear a high-pitched voice emerge from the ally asking, "Why are ya interested in the Teeth's warehouse?"

Mak stopped and looked into the darkened alley. "My friend thought the architecture and alignment with the Summer Soltice might make it a good place to perform his annual summons on the high day of Queen Maab. Of course that's not for several months and we've convinced him that we aren't due to be here during that time. He of course insisted that we could return, but was countermanded by our captain who insists the ceremony take place in the dragon lair we recently acquired. Pardon? What did you say your name was?" Mak asked.

Elyas is curious what Tovy has to say, and figures it can't hurt to go with him. He fears Tovy may go to the House of Teeth if they don't.

Wil shares why he isn't a fan of the all to common ambushes in Dirt City, and asks if they can trust Tovy to not lead them into a trap.

Mak lays into Wil. He's more then a little peeved that Wil's actions have led to this situation. He has a feeling that maybe it would have been best to ignore the voice in the dark ally. He looks out fot wandering eyes from the public.

Kiwina follows along as well. He also keeps his eyes peeled.

Tsak shrugs his shoulders and follows Tovy.

Ayotnom gives Tovy the once over.

****************************************

Tovy seems like he's on the up and up, and everyone is able to breath a little easier as he leads them into the dark alley. Though there are many opportunities for an ambush, and our seasoned heroes can easily point out several locations that would be perfect for one, none come to fruition. Tovy leads the Petals down several twisting and turning alleys, always making sure to stay in the dark. You get the feeling that the gnome doesn't wish to be seen with you, but for life preservation reasons, not reputation reasons. Finally, Tovy stops at the back door to some establishment. He pulls out a key and unlocks the door. He opens the door and ushers everyone inside, what appears to be the back room of some general store, based on the assorted goods neatly stacked on shelves. Tovy walks over to a table and pulls a cover off a lamp that obviously is the permanent recipient of a continues flame spell.

Finally in the light, Everyone else can finally see what Tsak had seen from the start, a smartly dressed blue-haired gnome male wearing a burgundy waistcoat with shiny brass buttons, brown knee britches, and over the knee socks that match his waistcoat. You also see a gold chain protruding from a watch pocket at the front of his waistcoat, leading to the second button hole from the bottom of his waistcoat. He has the look of a kind soul, but carries himself as one who understands profit, and knows how to make one.

Tovy invites everyone to join him at the table and says, "I have some information that may or may not be of value to you. I don't know which as you haven't been exactly forthright with me as to your reasoning, though I'm inclined to believe that you would gain from my information. On the other hand, you obviously have wealth, based on the finery you wear, and the impressive weapons many of you carry, which I assume are for the most part enchanted. Well, when someone with information crosses with people of wealth, bargains are often struck, and it appears we are in such a situation. So as the possessor of the goods you may wish to obtain, I make you this offer. You give me 100 gp upfront, and than I share what I know. If you find the information useful, and believe me I'll know, than you give me an addition 100 gp."

You get the impression that Tovy is a shrewd businessman, and isn't bluffing when he says he will know, if you found the information useful.

Elyas raises his eyeborws at the price. 200 gold sounds like a lot for unknown information from a stranger. he tries to gauge if the gnome is open for negotiations, but he has absolutely no read on the guy
[sense motive = 13, nat 1]

Elyas keeps quiet and lets the others handle negotiations. He will pitch in some gold if the group decides to go for it.

Kiwina also tries to get a read on the gnome. (Sense motive = 30) If the gnome seems to be on the up and up, Kiwina is willing to make the up front payment.

"I am game for this too. It feels a bit natural for something like this in Dirt City," he says in a slow nuanced cadence. His voice has changed and its almost like he is a brand new person.

"Given you do not show any sort of untruthfulness. Maybe we could split the difference?"

Yup says Tsak. He counts this as sufficient to signify his intent and lapses back into silence.

Tsak is actually quite happy to deal with Tovy and sees an opportunity for an ongoing relationship with someone who is connected, well-informed and discrete. All qualities the Petals lack in this new location of Dirt City.

Ayotnom says, "We're not without funds but 100 gold sounds like an awful lot for information that is essentially a crap shoot. I don't suppose you'd be willing to do 50 gold up front and 150 gold if we find the information relevant? You seem to believe your information is of interest to us and if it is we will gladly cough up the 200 gold total that you asked for but if you are wasting our time you still get a nice tip but we are only out 50 gold. Does that sound fair?"
