Tsak Rezar wants to have a nice warm bed and nice meal.
Elyas also wishes to stick around
Rolth Niheow wishes for good food and not a camp bed.
Kiwina expresses concern around the length of the journey.
Falco Ambersier suggest that the delay won't harm you, and will give you some extra magical power.
Mak decides to eat, drink and be merry.

You all spend a wonderful evening, eating, drinking, and being merry with the locals. They're not unwelcoming, but they are a bit uncertain, but not unpleasant. They drink and chat with you, and you come to discover that without Pholus, the other Families and Tribes are trying to pressure Pelonius to help them, or stand down and let them take over. However there are enough of them causing interference that Pelonius is almost being kept "neutral".

After a nice meal, and a warm soft bed, all taken care of by Caliphon, you wake up feeling refreshed and ready to go. Caliphon meets you at the crack of dawn, and happily guides you towards the forest.

The journey takes you most of the day, but early in the afternoon you begin to see the forest in the distance. The forest is made of huge trees, hundreds of feet tall, and tens of feet in diameter. They are truly impressive, and as you reach the edge of the forest, you are approached by Centaur guards, wielding lances and spears.

"Who goes there, state your names and business!"

Rolth briefly considers a 'who's on first?' joke, but then remembers that he never went to comedy class at bard camp. He instead goes for the heroic angle, "We are the Eight Petaled Rose, Champions of the Taurnament, lauded by Hollyhocks, and now bearers of a message from the Liontaur Council of Chiefs. Our business is that of all good folk. I am Rolth Niheow, shaman of Domi's will among my people. We seek to talk to Pelonius, that we might offer our aid."

He enjoys the walk in the fresh air after a lovely meal and wonderful nights sleep and is mightily impressed by the size of the trees in the forest.

He waits patiently to find out who the guards are and what they may be guarding.

Falco is content to watch the world on the journey looking at the interplay of life on land, from the bugs to any small animals they see. He is lost in thought about how sometimes you need to get off the water when the voice calls out startling him.

"Ehh.." Rolth ahs the under control keep quiet mouth.

Even as Rolth moved to introduce them Mak swept wide to get a clear field of view as he scanned the treeline for threats. He made no threatening moves or brought his bow up, he just stood and looked. At the mention of Hollyhocks Mak caught Kiwina's look and stifled a chuckle as he kept watch over the proceeding. He'd reserve his comments for later when he was out of earshot of those that might kill him for his ill-chosen words.

Tsak Rezar enjoys the walk
Elyas follows along quietly
Rolth Niheow does his best to introduce the lot of you
Kiwina keeps an eye on Mak
Falco Ambersier enjoys looking at the wildlife on your journey
Mak keeps an eye out for any threat

The guards look to one another, and one that is clearly in charge watches you with a careful eye. He whispers something to one of the others, probably a subordinate, and then speaks.

"Very well... we will take you before Pelonius. If the Druid vouches for you, then you can't be all bad."

He breaks out in a slight smile as if he's teasing you a bit.

"Follow me."

Caliphon speaks up as the rest of you prepare to head in.

"I will return to the Fort, I'm sure you can make your own way back when you need to. Good luck my friends, and again, thank you." As you enter the trees, he waits outside until you can no longer see him.

You move through the trees and while the terrain is difficult to move over, the Centaurs seem to have little to no trouble moving through the underbrush, even with the difficulty, it doesn't take you long to get where you're going.

You are brought before a tall, muscular female Centaur, who has a very old male Centaur with her, they appear to be in conversation when you arrive, the guard who brought you politely coughs to get their attention and then speaks.

"I present to you Pelonius, acting Chief Stallion, and Hollyhocks, Druid and advisor."

Both Pelonius and Hollyhocks look at you as if waiting for you to introduce yourselves to them individually.

Tsak Rezar introduces himself simply
Elyas looks for anyone who maybe watching them
Rolth Niheow attempts to charm the two Centaurs
Kiwina introduces himself rather matter-of-factly
Falco Ambersier puts his best foot forward, despite his unkemptness due to the underbrush
Mak does his best to do the right actions, and does a good job.

Hollyhocks smiles at you all.

"Of course I remember you... I will vouch for them Pelonius, they are great warriors and always helpful. It is good to see you again, I hope you've not had as much trouble as we have been having since we last spoke? It is safe to speak here."

Hollyhocks and yourselves spend a few moments catching up before Pelonius takes the letter from you, opening it and reading it in silence. Looking around while she does so, you appear to be alone, there are a few guards but at a respectful distance, and almost certainly unable to hear.

Once she has finished reading, Pelonius speaks.

Ugh. Better trade with the liontaurs would be fine, but that is the least of my worries right now. This is addressed to my father, and would that here were here to take this. You see, a couple months ago, my father is old and has been saying it is time another filled the role of Chief Stallion. Hollyhocks here agreed. My father began praying to Domi for guidance in this. He began to have dreams of conflict among the herds. He had visions of journeying to a place on Bridge Island. He told me that there was something there was a test on Bridge Island that would make clear who should lead our people. I wanted to go with him, but he thought that I should stay here with Hollyhocks.

Hollyhocks takes over

Yes, Pholus was wise in this. But he has been gone too long. We expected him back in a few weeks, and I fear something has gone wrong. It is not storm season, so the voyage there and back should have been safe. With him gone, the herds grow restless, all jockeying for position. We tell them to wait until Pholus and the other tribal leaders return. Indeed, any would-be leader would covet Pholus’ blessing. Some seek his approval. I suspect others would just as well trick the old stallion into giving his blessing, and I fear others have darker motives to make sure he favors no one." His words are dripping with meaning.

Rolth sees that several of the Petals are waiting for him to chime in, so he winds up his chatterbox and offers, "I'm afraid that you may be right that something ill has befallen your father. On our journey here, we rescued two survivors of a ship said to have been attacked by a kraken. And in our recent adventures across the isles, we have learned of a new threat to taurkind, posed by a mysterious power called the Deep. It seeks to infect folks with a madness that turns them upon one another, sometimes using magical amulets in the shape of tentacles to corrupt their minds. If you see any such amulets here, you would be best to lock them up or destroy them, lest they prey on the minds of the various herds and bring their conflicts to violence. Would it be helpful if we were to sail to Bridge Island, and see what news we can learn of the fate of your father and the other leaders? Perhaps we can help him in his test as well, if it is not too late."

Tsak Rezar stays silent
Elyas shows a hint of concern
Rolth Niheow offers the services of the Petals.
Kiwina queries agents of the Deep
Falco Ambersier gets more and more concerned.
Mak wishes he could relax.

Pelonius nods.

"That would be helpful... I'm not aware of any amulets like the ones you're describing, but I must admit I've not looked out for them. I will ask around."

Hollyhocks takes over speaking.

Five centaur herd leaders accompanied Pholus on the voyage - the mares Barbale and Agarime, and stallions Timapius, Brygape, and Sebochus. Their absence has sparked infighting in some of the tribes, and I fear tribal fighting may not be far off. Pelonius and I are doing our best to keep the peace, but...it’s been difficult.

Pholus and the others would not have been gone so long if something bad had not happened. I doubt he meant to be gone this long. There has been talk of going after them, some say to wait a bit longer, while I fear others see the absence of these tribal leaders as an opportunity to advance. Many here are too focused on fighting for succession. I am too old to travel such a distance. And besides, Pelonius and I are needed here to try to keep the peace.

But here now. You are a goodly group of heroes who my sources tell me have done great things on Minotaur Isle and have helped the liontaurs deal with a foe that escapes my diving ability. Will you travel to Bridge Island and see if you can find what happened to Pholus and the others? This would be a great service to the centaurs if you could do this and bring back Pholus or at least word of what has happened?

You can see the worry on Pelonius’ face at Hollyhocks’s words. “Please, if you can rescue my father. Or at least bring word of….” Her words trail off, unwilling to give voice to her darkest fears.

Hollyhocks will add, “Pholus shared with me some information that may be of use. I’m sorry my dear that I did not tell you of this. I was sworn to secrecy to make sure you would not go after him. He said that he thinks his dreams were in response to his prayers to Domi. He had visions of Bridge Island and a man named Nyloth. He saw a metal structure that could only be opened by a centaur.

DC 10 Intelligence Check - Highlight to display spoiler: {The Petals may remember a man named Nyloth from the casino/bar where they killed the octopus faced Aaroth. He was an older man with the practiced stance of a warrior. He had a weathered appearance, with white hair and a short beard. He wore regular clothing with a mithril shirt beneath, and a longsword on his hip. He had little to say. He offered the party some small advice at the time and had no interest in dealing with the Purple Duke’s Minotaur Guards.}

Thank you Hollyhocks, for the additional information, that may be a clue to this mystery that we are slowly unraveling. When Tsak commented on Nyloth Mak insisted that "no, that's not the guy." as he remained adamant about the fellow in the casino. Mak created a description seemingly at random of a fellow with a yellow beard, one blue eye and two green and was certain that had to be the man. After several moments of Tsak insisting that WASN'T the man Mak resigned himself to just disagreeing with the disillusioned warrior and stayed quiet about it. THEY'D see they were wrong.

OOC: Rolled a 1 on that check, LOL!

As for the whole travel to Bridge Island....well Mak had never been there. Hells, he'd barely been here. So while he regretted turning about as soon as they arrived he was resigned to follow along with the petals as their last provisional member. If he were to leave them he'd at least want to do so while in human lands and with money in his pocket.

Thoughts of leaving flashed through his mind even as he felt something in his hand. Mindlessly he turned the object over and over for several moments before he realized he held the symbol of Pantheon. Mak glanced down at it and resolved to get to the bottom of this mystery. It couldn't have been an accident that he found that symbol in his hand at the moment of his indecision.

So when Rolth uttered his vow to find out about the chief stallion Mak nodded his ascent as well and added. "We will find this Nyloth in spite of my friends poor description of him."

As best Kiwina can recall, he took an amulet from that treasure. A ring of protection is nothing to sneeze at, though. "The gems summon elementals? Tsak Rezar looks forward to relaxing
Elyas explains the gems a bit more.
Rolth Niheow wants to head to the catacombs
Kiwina searches for information about your future journey.
Falco Ambersier wants to sample some different cuisine before being stuck with the boat's food
Mak decides to go and drink with Tsak

((OoC: Everyone gains 500 XP for the scene with Pelonius and Hollyhocks!))

You all split up some loot and spend time relaxing and getting ready for the next leg of the journey.

Kiwina only discovers that the seas are usually calm and there's rarely anything to worry about, and there have been no reports of anything different. Most ships that have come or gone that way have been fine, the only one that appears to be overdue is Pholus' ship.

You all arrive at the Rose and instruct Ramsay to cast off, he does so as soon as you are on board. You know the journey should take you about two days, given what Kiwina learned, and you have a heading, so you set off into the warm sunshine and calm seas.

((Can you please make a DC 10 Knowledge (Navigation) or Profession (Sailor) check? Also, are you setting a watch?))

Kiwina worries that you'll have to search the whole ocean
Falco Ambersier keeps practicing his sailing.
Mak keeps his watch and is happy about it.

During the second day, you can see something in the distance, it looks like a couple of ships lashed together, one a large, powerful looking frigate, with two masts and several gunports on each side, a relatively formidable, if slow to turn ship. Next to it, a smaller frigate, almost only a corvette. It has more gunports and only a single mast, but is clearly a much more maneuverable ship, similar in size to the Rose. Once the Petals get closer, it becomes clear that the smaller vessel is attached to the larger one, and is taking prisoners and goods off the larger ship.

As the Petals approach, they can see someone one the smaller ship spot them and order them to detach, with a flurry of action the smaller ship, named The Razor's Edge, comes loose and begins moving towards the Rose. The gun ports open, and you see ballistae appear in the gunnery ports, they seem to think they have a second meal today!

we're not built for a fight ship to ship, but we can certainly handle ourselves if we get boarded. perhaps waving a truce flag is the best option. if they try to sink us at range we have no chance

DM Dan - The ships

Tsak Rezar makes a few suggestions
Elyas suggest waving a flag of truce and letting them board
Rolth Niheow glances at the larger ship, and does indeed see it is The Pounding Fury
Kiwina points out the Rose has no weapons to fight back with.
Falco Ambersier offers waterbreathing to the party, and suggest you let them get close.
Mak suggest the other ship may not be hostile.

The ship approaches, it's clearly taking a relatively aggressive stance, you can see the ballistae being loaded, aimed and prepared so they can fire once they decide to. You will all have to decide quickly what you want to do, though a false flag of surrendering could work, it would also be dangerous and quite deceptive.

From the looks of the ballistae they will want to board you, ideally subduing you and the crew first. If you want to lay an ambush you can, or if you want to wave the white flag to let them board you can, but you must decide and enact the plan quickly.

Rolth Niheow (BatMark) (78/78 HP | AC: 20; Touch: 13; CMD: 24) |   d4+1=4 ;

Rolth takes a closer look at the ships to see whether any prisoners were already brought aboard the Razor's Edge or were left on the Pounding Fury.

"Captain, Tsak is quite wise with his advice on using our firebox for propulsion. Without the need for the wind to propel us, we can spiral in, keeping their bow pointed at us as we close and staying clear of their ballistae broadsides. From closer in, we can use spells, then come bow to bow and board them that way. We certainly cannot flee with the Pounding Fury in sight!"

Rolth will welcome the waterbreathing spell from Falco, and as we close with the Razor's Edge will cast Expeditious Retreat and Mirror Image on himself. then chug his potion of Bear's Endurance.

As far as Kiwina is concerned, there is no problem in deceiving a pirate. He does not, however, want the crew to suffer if things go badly.

"We have other options, but they would require drawing the attention of the ship and getting it close. As I said, I have a feather token -- in fact, I have two. One to provide wind in a ship's sails, and another to anchor a ship in place. A swimmer could try to stop them, but I fear it would mean attaching the anchor to their keel. We have the folding boat, which could divide their attention or allow us to take the battle to them without putting our crew at risk."

For all that, Kiwina agrees that convincing the ship to get close enough to use magic against them is the Petals' best hope.

Tsak does indeed gather in close for the water breathing spell.

I don't want the Rose fired upon, too messy. We either run them around or we play possum. Perhaps we can get around the other side of the Fury and use her as protection whilst we try to free her or use spellcraft? If we put Kiwina's plan into action I can go with him in the folding boat.

Tsak also has no qualms about 'tricking' pirates. Does anyone have a smoke bomb? We could fire up the boiler then pretend there's an issue to lure them in close...

Tsak moves to the boiler and prepares to power the ship with steam as he thinks that speed and agility are probably their best friends in this fight.

ok, so we're going to divide their attention and attack with spells? I can certainly help with that. I will be a third (and much smaller) target to draw attention, and can harass them with spells. we'll see how well they can manuever and fight with their crew stuck in spider webs and tentacles. maybe throw in a bit of fire and lightning for effect!

unfortunately once we spread out i won't be able to speed us up with magic like we have been doing lately.

Tsak Rezar ensures your ship is as fast and agile as it can be
Elyas talks about splitting their attention even further
Rolth Niheow looks more closely and wants to free the other ship
Kiwina offers up a few plans
Falco Ambersier prepares to take away sight from one of the ballistae operators
Mak tries to see if the ship is preparing to attack

There are several ballistae on it, a three on each side that you can see, and all are manned by one person. They are clearly loading and preparing to fire the ballistae at you. It is also obvious to see that there are ropes attached to the bolts in the ballistae, as they seem to intend to use it to pull the ships together then board. If you were to make it easy for them, i.e. not attempt to escape they will most likely simply board you.

They will be in range of with their ballistae in 2 rounds, and close enough to board in 3. You don't have long to decide on a plan, and whether you want to hit them hard and fast first or lure them in. That should be your primary decision to begin with.

Rolth Niheow (BatMark) (78/78 HP | AC: 20; Touch: 13; CMD: 24) |

At this point, Rolth recommends the following:

—Not try to escape, so that they don’t shoot holes in the Rose with the ballistae.
—Agrees with Elyas’ plan to preemptively blast their deck just as they mass to board us, unless we see prisoners in the way (What do we see in that regard? Rolth tried to look earlier)
—We should not allow them to surround each of us separately, like the marrow did. We should be at 5’ spacing if our foes are large, or adjacent if they are medium or small, in a semicircle to protect our casters. (What do our foes look like, now that they are close?)
--We can crouch down behind the railing for cover from any ranged attacks until the last moment before they leap aboard.

Tsak Rezar helps form a line
Elyas casts a few spells on the Petals that are near enough
Rolth Niheow makes his suggestions
Kiwina forms a line with Tsak
Falco Ambersier prepares to attempt to stun them
Mak fires off a shot, but it misses.

Deciding on a hit fast and hard strategy, you look over at your enemies. The crew of the other ship are all human or humanoid, and all preparing to board, you can see they look at you with a hunger in their eyes, greed rising up as they keep watching what you're doing.

The Rose slows down on your command to encourage them to get closer, which they do, as soon as they're in range, they fire off some of their ballistae bolts, and they slam into the side of the ship, almost immediately afterwards the ropes are cut by Mak firing arrows at them.

You can see the pirates are unhappy with this, and some of them are preparing grappling hooks to use to board. You both move closer and are within range of spells and ranged weapons as you pass within 60 ft of each other, and they start attempting to throw the grappling hooks along, seven of which catch somewhere on the rigging or the sides.

Several crossbow bolts fly onto the ship, Tsak takes 6 damage, Rolth takes 2 damage and Elyas takes 8 damage, the rest skitter harmlessly across the deck.

Mak knew Kiwina had a directive to target the leaders, but Mak couldn't really tell who was a leader or not from the current brief encounter. Falco Ambersier releases a spell that immediately slays a few more.
Mak lets loose four arrows, which immediately slay four of the pirates

The pirates don't seem particularly durable as nearly any attack you throw at them seems to kill them or knock them out of the fight. However, there is a large number of them, so they may begin to overwhelm you.

Towards the back of the boat is a man dressed in much fancier garb, and is clearly some sort of leader amongst them, he's clothing denotes he's the captain of the ship, he seems a lot more formidable than the large number of men teeming around him.

The ships are not currently locked together, however there appears to be more pirates attempting to do that, they manage to pick up the grappling hooks and get them across to attach to the Rose and some pirates being scrambling across, however only one gets caught in Elyas' web, somehow.

A few more crossbow bolts skitter over to the Rose just as Ramsay gets the crew below decks, leaving the ship stationary and immovable while the battle goes on.

Mak decided that the ropes at present were helping the Rose crew as much as the pirates at the moment so he didn't target any of the pirates crossing on them. He did focus his attention on the captain of the other vessel as he brought the bow around and up to aim at the man 70-80 feet away from him. In the nest Mak had a clear view of the other ships deck as he loosed an arrow. As hasted as he was he did take his time to aim carefully as the captain likely had magical protection.

Mak's first arrow came close but the activity on the deck kept him from seeing if he was successful and hit the pirate captain. The second arrow Mak was certain hit the man, but his vision was obscured at the that exact moment. His last arrow however certainly hit, but again he had to peer through the fog of bodies to be certain.

Rolth sees another of his images disappear, saving him some damage. He flies into a rage and lashes out at what he thinks is their leader trying to board The Rose. He hits the guy twice, but fails to score a critical hit.
Kiwina cleverly focuses on the ropes. She can see that two are on fire. She throws another ball of fire into the webbing, igniting it. She can see the fire in the webbing begin to spread.
Falco tries to blind what he thinks is the leader, but somehow the man resists the effect.
Mak shoots the man twice, and watches as he plumets into the sea below.
Tzak shoots the nearest pirate. He takes damage and drops from the burning rope, treading water and wincing in pain from the effort.
Elyas recalls another Fireball and hurls it at the deck of the ship. It hits and starts several fires on the wooden planks. Oh, and it crisps 19 more pirates in the process. Which is good, because three of them had long planks that splash into the water below.

Things are looking bad for these pirates.

The webbing is burning, which is lighting the ship on fire, The webbing that was extending beyone the deck falls limp to the side of the ship (webbing needs something to support it.) And then Elyas’ fireball starts several fires on the deck.

The ropes that were on fire all snap, dropping a few more pirates in the drink. Two pirates struggle (the two that are together) to hang on to something as they swim. (DC 24 Perception to hear: Highlight to display spoiler: {”Agh, I gots the cap’n. Help me, mebbe we kin save ‘im”})

The pirate facing Rolth sees that he is all alone. He withdraws, diving into the water below.

More pirates boil up from below, a few shoot at you with bows, but most look to have pails they are lowering into the water. Kiwina takes an arrow from those at the railing for 6 damage, and Tsak takes 7 damage from an arrow.

You hear shouting, but it’s hard to tell what’s said beyond yells of “FIRE”

Rolth can see that the pirate crew is distracted by the fires on board their ship, and so looks for their leader in the water. That fellow was hard to hit, dodging much of what should have been a devastating blow--he must be loaded with magic goodies! He can't see the finely dressed fellow, but deduces that the two pirates dragging something through the water might be trying to save their fallen leader. Dropping his glaive to the deck, he makes a running leap to land in the water next to them, attempting to shred them with his claws and bite as he continues his joyous battle song. He will start his attacks with the one closest to the pirate ship and then turn on the other if he kills the first. (Liontaur Charge, Rage, Inspire Courage)

Rolth saw where the pirate leader dropped, and surmised that two pirates in the water were pulling him behind them. He drops his weapon and dives into the water, landing on one and tearing a gash in his neck as he does so, killing the man.
Kiwina tells the pirates to surrender and the Petals will help save their ship.
Mak knew it was his shot that caused the pirate leader to fall from the rope. He focuses on the four pirates that decided to shoot at the Petals. Zing, zing, zing, zing! Four arrows hit home and one drops into the water as the other three fall lifeless on the deck of the burning ship.
Falco also calls for surrender as he puts out one of the fires.
Tzak runs along the deck and tries to land on one of the two pirates where Rolth is. He misses a bit, but pops up next to one.
Elyas’ invisible voice calls from above for the men to surrender.

Where Rolth slashed the man’s throat, blood spreads in the water. Tsak splashed down next to the other pirate whose eyes go wide and he tries to pull away (withdraw). At the same time, Rolth and Tsak can see the body they had sinking beneath the water. The two heroes will need to decide if they go after the withdrawing pirate or grabs the sinking body. Make a DC 15 Athletics check or a DC 15 Dex check to grab the body. If you miss you can make a DC 12 Swim check to paddle down a few feet and grab it.

The pirates clearly see the four bowmen fall to Mak’s flurry of arrows, and they want nothing to do with that. No other bows are raised.

Most of the men are calling to each other to pull up buckets of water and are working to put out the fires. The webbing continues to burn across the deck, lighting more fires and burning the lower rigging. They do not respond to the calls for surrender. Some cast wary glances toward The Rose. Some are a bit frightened of the disembodied voice. All are focused on the fires.

The SHIPBOARD BATTLE is here.

Rolth grabs the body the two pirates were towing. The thing hangs limp and has a couple of Mak’s arrows sticking out of it. He calls for a rope from his friends.
Kiwina starts to let down a rope as he again calls for the pirates on the ship to surrender.
Mak drops down to the main deck, picks himself up, and stands back up.
Falco remains focused on the fires. This earns him some wary looks from the other ship.
Tzak helps Rolth, and finds that he can breathe just as well underwater as above. Which is a weird sensation.

A rope descends from The Rose near Tsak and Rolth.

The webbing continues to burn away, spreading fire across the deck of the pirate ship as it does so, burning rigging and such as it goes.

Noone moves to pick up the fallen pirates’ bows.

Aboard The Razor’s Edge there is a great deal of scurrying going on. Most of those on the deck are preoccupied with lowering and raising canvas buckets on the farside of the ship. You see a rather fat pirate show up on deck and he starts barking at the others. He wears a leather apron and has a big cleaver in one hand. “Here now, get that fire out. Move ya laggard, er I’ll brain ya. You there Cleatus, yer gonna be sleepin with the fishes if’n ya don’ get that fire out. Where’s the cap’n? Cour, yer making a mess of it. Move faster ya worthless skum, afor’n I pitch ya overboard! Put yer backs into it lads, or we’ll be roasted for sure!”

You hear bits form some of the other pirates.

”Ach, I burned me hand!”
“Quit yer whinin or I’ll put the fire out wit you.”
“Where’s the cap’n?”
“Hey, why’s that bird guy putting out our fires on our ship?”
“A’cause he don’t see it as our ship no more.”
“Let’s get outta here.”
“HEY! HEY OVER THERE. THIS WAS ALL A MISTAKE. WE’RE REAL SORRY. WE’RE GONNA GO. YOU KIN KEEP THAT OTHER SHIP - THEIR TREASURE’S ALL YOURS. WE DIDN’T HAVE TIME TO GET IT, AN WE GOTS NUTHIN.”

A couple pirates are trying to move up into the rigging. They seem to be trying to get a sail unfurled, but they're having a very difficult time as most of the ropes that led down to the deck were burned up. And they keep glancing back nervously at The Rose.

Kiwina helps his friends climb back aboard, giving them an update.
Mak makes an impressive jump, landing deftly aboard the pirate ship and starts directing the fire fighting activities.
Tzak ties the rope to the dead pirate, and climbs back aboard The Rose
Falco continues to watch from a distance and drops water into the fire on the other ship.
Elyas lands invisible on the pirate ship (where?) and begins a summoning spell.
Rolth helps Tsak and Kiwina get the dead pirate aboard, but needs to wait for the rope to come back down. (DM assumes there was a knotted rope available near the railing of a ship to easily bring people aboard so the climb DC is 0. The climb DC for climbing the ship side is 20.)

A few pirates climb back aboard their ship.

As Mak directs the pirates to do what they’re already doing, he gets some glances. The fat cook has their attention and has them working in good order to put out the fires, occasionally hitting a few with the flat side of his big cleaver if they don’t move fast enough. Mak tells the cook to get to work as well, and the man just glares at Mak as he continues directing the others. “If you wanna help, that’d be fine. But I got these louts in order. You people already lit our ship on fire, so don’t interfere ‘til we get it out! Where’s the cap’n?”

The last of the webbing burns even as some of the other fires are put out.

A couple of sailors move carefully above decks to get one sail in place. They’re having a hard time with just the two of them, but they’re making some progress. But this ship is going nowhere right now.

With Mak aboard, the chatter stops. Except for Elyas disembodied voice spellcasting on the deck. That’s kind freaking them out.

Rolth climbs back aboard The Rose. The dead body of the pirate leader lies sprawled on the deck, with Mak’s arrows sticking out of hit. Water tinged with blood pools about the body.
Mak glares at the fat cook barking at the pirates to put out the fires, and tells the man to drop his weapon. He offers 50 gold to the first man that hands him the cook’s cleaver as he moves up to face the cook. He can see that the man's leather apron is pretty dirty and covered in greasy stains.
Falco stops dropping water on the deck and watches to see what happens with Mak’s offer.
Kiwina adds to Mak’s offer, sweeting it with a promise of freedom.
Elyas finishes his summoning spell, and a medium water elemental appears on deck.

The fat cook can see the burned pirate bodies, and notes several fallen ones with arrows protruding from them. He looks at Mak’s confident demeanor with an appraising look, and upon hearing Kiwina’s offer he draws the cleaver and hands it to Mak himself. ”Here ya go. I got some more if yer a collector. I’ll get the gold from ya once we get these fires out.”

Then he turns back to yelling at the pirates to get the fires out. They continue their efforts and seem to be making headway putting out the fires.

(We don’t need to go round by round putting out the fires, but I don’t want to short change any PC actions.)

Rolth Niheow (BatMark) (62/62 HP | AC: 20; Touch: 13; CMD: 24|)

Rolth is quite pleased to be back aboard the Rose, and impressed when Elyas' water elemental shows up. Makes him feel better about selling the water elemental gem, and doubly pleased for when the air gem will come in handy at some point. Fate has a way of playing out with such things! Looking at the Captain, he says, "Looks dead to me after all, Captain Kiwina, but I haven't checked carefully. I reckon I'll hop over the the pirate ship in a moment, once I catch my breath." Feeling a little fatigued as his rage ebbs, Rolth brings his wrists together, says a brief prayer to Domi, and feels a wash of restored energy. (Mark of Domi, lesser restoration)

Elyas (Ben A.) (59/59 HP | AC: 18; Touch:13; Flat: 15; CMD:15) | mwk Light Crossbow +7( 1D8, 19-20) | Status: mage armor

Elyas appears on the deck and directs the water elemental to start walking through the flaming parts of the deck, quenching the flames as it goes.

["The elemental’s touch puts out non-magical flames of Large size or smaller. The creature can dispel magical fire it touches as dispel magic (caster level equals elemental’s HD)."

he stands close to Mak, noot wanting to be split up if the pirates decide they want to go another round for some reason. he trusts that they don't want to do all this again, but you can never be too careful with pirates...

"As I see it, we need to secure oaths of surrender from the pirates and render aid to The Pounding Fury. The question is who to put aboard their ship when we go to port to make sure they follow us to port, and we can figure that out later." Kiwina would have been more surprised if the pirate captain were not dead after near-simultaneous attacks from Rolth and Mak, but it had to be confirmed.

"Shall we go talk to the pirates?" Kiwina makes the running leap from ship to ship. (Acrobatics = 41)

Once across, Kiwina helps put out fires by creating water (with less the range and volume than Falco's spells). He also talks to the pirates about the right of all beings to be heard and listened to fairly before being judged. . . He points out that even those who are accused may claim sanctuary in Pantheon's temples, there safely confined until a trial can be arranged. If they surrender, the pirates do not need to fear revenge. (Oratory = 13, not a great nor a horrible performance)

He looks up and shakes his head.
Sorry lads, but this is an ex-Captain. Dead, deceased, fallen from his perch and shuffled off this mortal coil.

He looks to Rolth and Captain KDo you want me to assist Mak on whats left of their ship while you check out The Fury?

Falco takes a quick glance at the captain to confirm what Tsak says and then agrees with Kiwina.

"Probably more then one of us will need to travel with them if that is the plan. I do not mind taking a position in the rigging where I can keep an eye out and my bow ready. Though they have numbers they did not seem to good at being pirates."

Mak accepted the cleaver with a nod to the cook. ”Lets get this fire out shall we?” Mak said as he pitched in to help. At present he ignored those in the rigging as they tried to restore the sails.

DM Mark - Fires are out. What now?
Monday May 10th, 2021 7:52:50 PM

Rolth removes his fatigue.
Elyas directs his water elemental to begin putting out the fires. (For future reference, a water elemental uses their Drench ability as a standard action that will extinguish up to one large area of fire each round.)
Kiwina suggests ways to secure the pirate’s surrender and their ship, and leaps aboard the pirate ship.
Tzak confirms that what you think is the pirate captain is in fact dead, and asks Kiwina about next steps.
Falco confirms Tsaks assessment, and talks about ways to secure and sail the pirate ship.
Mak accepts the cleaver and sets about putting out the fire with the others.

The water elemental glides across the deck, pausing here and there to summon a drenching amount of water. And each time the water results in an angry hiss as elements connect and the flames are put out. The pirates pause for a moment with the appearance of a vaguely humanoid shaped wave of water helps with their task. The cook barks at them again and they return to their buckets along with Mak. Soon, all the fires are out.

Mak, Kiwina and Elyas stand on the deck

The pirates are an interesting mix of anger and fear as they speak among themselves.

”So, what happens now?”
“They’re gonna be sore about that other ship.”
“That ship wuz ours fer the takin.”
“Yeah, an’ now it ain’t.”
“Think we kin take em?”
“I dunno, ask them dead guys.
“Ask that invisible voice.”
“Ask that water thing.”
“Ask the dead cap’n.”

At that point, a scrawney pirates angrily pulls out a dagger and shouts “Aaaaa, for Captain Klenzendorf!” As he runs past the fat cook, the large man sticks out his foot and the pirate falls flat as his dagger skiters across the deck. The cook puts his foot on the man’s back and says, “You best relax Finkel. The cap’n’s gone and you don’t need to join him just yet.”

The two pirates in the rigging above the deck stop their work with the sail as they watch what’s happening below nervously.

Everyone looks expectantly at the Petals. At least the ones they can see.

One in the back says, “Oh, um, hey. Thanks fer puttin the rest o' the fires. We, um, we … can we go now?”

Rolth casually makes a running leap onto the former pirate ship and saunters up to the crowd, weapon ready enough but not upraised or threatening. (Acrobatics = 36, success) "Can you go now? Well, that is an interesting question! Lemme check the Mariners' Guide to Law of the Sea, Section 5, Sub-Section 12, Piracy and Other Capital Crimes. Ah yes, here it is, it says punishable by death, barring extenuating circumstances. By extenuating circumstances, I'm sure that they mean 'reasons sufficient to not put the rest of these scurvy dogs to death, such reasons being given freely and quickly, lest these fellows end up like their captain and a few dozen of their companions, down in Wavey Bones locker beneath the waves.' So I suggest that you explain yourselves post-haste. You can start by explaining why you attacked the Pounding Fury, whether and who or what sent you to do such a thing, and what you intended to do with the ship, its crew, and its cargo. Do begin now, because unlike the Pirate Code, the Laws of the Sea are not mere guidelines." He grins fiercely, to punctuate this pretty little speech.

Kiwina listens to Rolth's speech with amusement. These fellows should figure out by now that they are prisoners. He thinks than an oath of surrender from each individual pirate should suffice, with a few Petals on board to make sure this ship gets to the same port as the Rose. If necessary, he can pray to Pantheon to detect anyone who is lying. Those that don't surrender or that lie about surrendering might need to go swimming.

"Tsak or Falco, does our friend the captain have any jewelry around his neck?"

Elyas stands back, impressed at Rolth's speech.

he eyes the pirates, trying to guages how much of a fight they might put up between here and the next port.

he leans over to Kiwina

"Captain, permission to be one of the Petals to oversea this crew as we bring the ships to port? as long as we stay relatively close together I can get myself and any other petals back to the Rose if something goes wrong, and i think the threat of magical fireballs should keep them in line after that quick little fight.
