The Rescue...

DM Dan - The Open Sea
Tuesday March 30th, 2021 7:15:09 PM

Tsak Rezar prepares to heal those that may need it.
Elyas waits, but queries what happeend to them.
Rolth Niheow suggest helping, but asks for guidance
Kiwina says they will help, but makes sure the Petals are prepared for the other vessel attacking.
Falco Ambersier agrees you should help ((OoC: Yeah no problem, either don't expend the slot or use it later if you feel it's necessary))
Mak prepares his weapon in case they try anything shifty.

The vessel is clearly a raft, it has only a single large sail that looks like it may have been cobbled together, and two figures on it. An adult Tengu and a human adolescent. You help them aboard and give the raft a once over, it has a few barrels and boxes on it, that probably once held food and supplies, but has since run dry. The boy doesn't seem to respond to anything, thankfully the Tengu speaks quickly and enough for both of them.

"Many thankings to you for helping us! Thankings. I am Rainard, and this is Bertram. Rainard. Bertram. You found us at just the right time. Right time. We were out of supplies, I don't know how much longer we would have survived. No supplies. We were on board The Courgan out of Asildur, going to Fargunia. Asildur to Fargunia."

Rainard accepts any scraps of food or water you offer him and eats quickly and drinks. Bertram eats and drinks also, but does so much more slowly, much more deliberately, as if he hasn't the strength to do it himself.

Heal DC 14 - Highlight to display spoiler: {There's nothing physically wrong with either of them, perhaps some exposure and a lack of water, but they're both in very good health, it would appear Bertram is just in shock, or just doesn't respond to stimuli as much.}

"Again, thankings to you. Thankings. I was journeying, on behalf of my master Tethes Valthor. Journeying for my master. He asked me to take Bertram to his family in Fargunia. Family in Fargunia."

After looking over the pair, Kiwina thinks that neither seems particularly injured, just too long adrift. "You were on the Courgan? What happened to her, and do you know where you've drifted since?"

At the moment, he thinks that simply getting them to harbor would satisfy his ethics.

Rolth Niheow (BatMark) (62/62 HP |AC: 19; Touch: 13; CMD: 24) |   d20+11=26 ; d20+18=19 ; d20+14=34 ;

Rolth says with a smile, "Slow down there, Rainard! You're going to make yourself sick if you try to make up for too much lost provender at once." He nods at the silent Bertram, acknowledging the slow and steady approach the young lad is taking.

He'll unlimber his lute and try to remember a soothing mainlander tune that he might have heard during his previous life as a sailor for his trading clan. With that as a backdrop, he'll inquire of Rainard in a friendly manner, once the fellow has gotten some sustenance, "So what makes a fellow want to sail around the Wall of Kaazul? And how did a lad from Fargunia end up in Asildur? It seems that something unusual is afoot on the mainland, eh?" He'll listen carefully to the answers, for any signs of deception or evasion.

Tsak realises that there is no need for bandages or the like.

He looks for an opportunity to separate them discretely. If he is able he would like to hear Bertram's story and ensure it matches what Rainard has to say.

Do you have any personal items that you want to salvage from your raft, we'll likely cut it loose soon? If we can deposit you at a port in the Taur Isles do you have the resources to contact your family?

Mak listened carefully to Rainard as he looked for signs of evil amulets about his person. The archer also didn't speak; mainly this was because he didn't want to give away his own origins just yet by revealing an accent that would identify him as from Asildur as well. Instead he listened to see if any falsehoods were being uttered about his home country. He was also interested in whether these two had any connection to the heartseeded and looked for those signs as well.

Clearly he also makes sure they are being fed.

Tsak Rezar attempts to separate them, but Bertram refuses, he doesn't say anything, but any attempt to move him too far away from Rainard ends up with him moving back towards the Tengu.
Elyas
Rolth Niheow tries to find out more about the pair's story
Kiwina gives the two a once over to ensure they're healthy enough
Falco Ambersier tries to ensure they are feed and looked after.
Mak tries to mentally double check all the details Rainard is giving (and as far as you're aware he's not being deceptive about your home country.)

Rainard continues to eat quickly, and instructs Bertram to do the same.

"Do not worry... the boy will be safe with me. Safe. Our ship was attacked, by a Kraken. Attacked. I don't know if there were other survivors, but I doubt it. Survivors, doubt. We've been drifting for nearly three weeks. Drifting. We survived on what little food and water we could get on the raft. Little. I have to be honest... I had almost given up hope. Almost. I am so glad you founds us. Glad. Where are we? Where? I had no way of navigating and I'm not the best sailor to begin with. Navigating."

Rolth, Mak - Highlight to display spoiler: {He's hiding something, he's not lying to you, he just doesn't appear to be telling you the whole truth.}

Bertram remains silent and if asked a direct question he will answer it with as few words as possible. If asked if he's okay, he simple says "yes" if asked if he's injured he says "no". He barely gives more than one or two word answers at most.

That done, he will sit back and see if it seems to have helped. "How's that, young man? I hope somewhat better. Now, you two, surely there is more to the story than that. You perceive that we have some sailing time ahead of us, so how about we hear the whole tale this time?" He's not being threatening at all, just encouraging.

Kiwina takes more interest in Rainard's story when Rolth asks for the whole thing -- not that the tale of a kraken didn't already have his attention. "Just so your tale can't bring us bad luck," he says as he pulls out his holy symbol of Pantheon. Once Rainard is into his explanation, Kiwina concentrates, trying to tell if Rainard is being deceptive.

Mak sat to one side and continued to listen. When the subject of a Kraken came up Mak had no idea what that might be or what it looked like. By it's description he assumed it was some kind of sea monster since it destroyed their ship.

He wanted badly to ask about the sea monster but he remained quiet and waited to see if Rolth could coax the rest of the story from them. Mak shifted a bit to conceal the heraldric symbol on his rapier that identified him as an Asilduran nobleman as he came closer to listen.

Bertram just nods, he's still acting very stilted, even with the Lesser Restoration... it strikes you as odd, that should have cleared up the issues if he was suffering from any.

Rainard takes a deep breath.

Tsak Rezar gets the rest of the crew moving
Elyas wonders whether or not you have time to deliver them to their destination.
Rolth Niheow again leans hard on Rainard.
Kiwina realises you probably can't deliver them to their destination, but dropping them off in a port is better than nothing.
Falco Ambersier tries to move Bertram away from Rainard
Mak keeps an eye out from a distance.

Bertram looks at Rainard, and Rainard gives a nod and a positive and caring smile.

"It's okay Bertram, these people will help us, I'm sure. Sure. Go with him, get some new clothes. Clothes. "

Once Bertram is below decks Rainard looks defeated.

"Please, I need your help. Help. Bertram isn't Bertram. Bertram. My master Tethes, created that Bertram to replace the son of his friend. Replace. His friend, Lord Braselton, lost his son a little while ago. Lost. Tethes created a simulacrum of Bertram to replace the child for Lord Braselton. Simulacrum. This version of Bertram doesn't know he's not the real Bertram, and has only a little over half his own memories. Memories. That's why he seems so quiet and uncertain... he's not really connected with all of his thoughts. Thoughts. He should get better once he's back with Lord Braselton... I can get us there if you can drop us off at a port town. Better. Please don't tell Bertram the truth... he wouldn't understand. Understand."

He takes a deep breath.

"We sailed round the wall as it was supposedly the quickest and safest route. Quickest. As for the Kraken, I don't know... I didn't exactly stop to ask it why it was attacking. Attacking. Look, I'm just trying to get the boy safely to his new? old? original? I don't know! his family! Family. Surely you can understand the need for delicacy here? Delicacy."

Delicacy's got nothing to do with it." Kiwina does not approve of Bertram's creation for this purpose, and suspects that to the extent that Bertram experiences anything he's going to have a pretty miserable existence anyway. No need to pile on.

"We're more worried about getting to port. What town did you leave, and where were you to land? The last we heard, pirate activity had picked up in King's Channel, yet that's probably where you were attacked. Have you heard talk of something called the Deep? Did any of the sailors say anything during the attack on the Courgan?"

"Ah, well, that explains it all then, I suppose. The good news is that we are headed to a port, where you might find your way. Please excuse me while I return to my duties."

Rolth will go about his way, eventually finding a quiet moment with Elyas to encourage him to investigate these magicks further. He thinks that the tengu is telling the truth as far as the tengu is aware, but that does not mean he is not being lied to by his master. Mak nods at Rainard's answer to his question about the Lord, apparently satisfied with the answer. He returns to his watchful posture, wondering when the kraken will show up. He does clean up a bit before the Rose arrives in port, wanting to look professionally squared away as we go ashore.

Kiwina looks at the other ships in the harbor and considers the two problems they have brought with them -- both the mixed-race and the mixed-up.

He asks Caliphon if he has any advice about seeking out the Chief Stallion. He also asks if Caliphon and Yuria will receive better treatment here than they were getting in Chessford.

He asks Rainard if he would be ready to explain to the authorities here what happened to the Courgan and maybe they could deduce where the attack happened. If nothing else, they may be forewarned in their own travels.

Satisfied that the Tengu's story seems to add up, Elyas does nothing further to investigate the copied man. he does keep an eye on the two new passengers, though. it wouldn't be the first time something wasn't what it seemed.

As they near the fort, Elyas gathers his things and prepares to leave. but other than that he will follow the lead of Captain Kiwina and their diplomatic members. he does watch all 4 passengers to see what they will do once the ship makes it to port.

Tsak Rezar realises his night watches may be catching up with him.
Elyas prepares to land in port.
Rolth Niheow prepares for landfall and checks in with Rainard
Kiwina asks for details from various people
Falco Ambersier keeps an eye on Bertram
Mak is satisfied and cleans the ship

As you approach the port you can see several ships docked in amongst the movement on the port.

This seems to be a bustling port, and there is a great deal of activity. There are a few human crewed ships (Seagull Spray, Jack’s Delight, Hastywaves) and a halfling crewed vessel (Seaspray). There are a few Centaur fishing vessels here and a large Minotaur trader (Horns Aplenty).

Fort Stag looks like it used to be a well fortified stone and timber fortification. It is clear that it could use a little repair as a fortification, and there is little worry about security. Lean-tos and stable-like homes are scattered outside the walls, and the walls are not patrolled. The centaurs here seem a bit wary of strangers, and are a bit on edge.

Your passengers all depart, Yuria and Caliphon thank you, pay you, and Caliphon says that they will be treated better her, and that if you wish to speak to the Chief Stallion, someone should be able to point you in the right direction, as he usually is here at Fort Stag.

Rainard also thanks you again, profusely and says they plan on staying here and recovering before continuing their journey, and while he doesn't have much gold, he can probably make some more before they have to head off.

Rolth is surprised that the young couple is not joining us in meeting the Chief Stallion, but will not argue the point. He will wish Rainard and Bertram safe travels, and give them 20gp to help them on their way. "May Domi protect you!"

With that, he is ready to move into the port town to try and find the Chief Stallion. "Hopefully he will remember us from the Taurnament! He was quite impressed with the Rose that we retrieved, and how we conducted ourselves during the quest. He was affiliated with the famous library, so perhaps we can start in that direction and ask around for his whereabouts? Kiwina, maybe we will have time to go visit Amarantha this time around! We still have the pass to the fort."

At Rolths words Falco's mind drifts back to the Taurnament and he grows wistful. It feels a lifetime ago, and for him maybe it is, that a halfling lad had the confidence for such an endevor.

"I remember him as well. Your plan sounds good though I doubt he would recognize me any me."

He says the last bit with a little chuckle.

Elyas joins the others as they disembark, breathing in the familiar smells of a port. Growing up on Centaur island he had visited this port many times, but that felt like a different person living a different life. Elyas had not been with the Petals during their stop on this island during the taurnament, so he did not have the same backgroound with the Chief. in fact the last time he was here he was working as a con artist...

"seems like talking with the Chief Stallion is our best starting point. lead the way, Rolth.

Once they arrived he supervised getting Elmer from the hold and to a stable where he could be trained as a riding horse. Tsak Rezar draws attention to his different appearance.

Kiwina tries to find out what's going on
Falco Ambersier looks for an inn, having a quick drink before going to see the Chief Stallion.
Mak is concerned for Elmer, so finds lodgings for him, and aids Rolth in looking for the Chief Stallion

Just as Yuria and Caliphon head off, Caliphon returns and says.

"Look... the meager gold we gave you isn't really enough for what you did... we're going to get in touch with a family member of mine, and if you want, I can help act as a guide and show you around Fort Stag, I even know of an inn that will probably let you stay as I'm friendly with the owner. If you meet me at the Hoof and Cushion tavern a few streets over in about an hour, I can guide you around, I'll wait until dinner time, or until you get word you don't need me. It's entirely up to you, but I'll mention you to the owners and they'll know to let you stay, for free of course."

After saying this, he departs with Yuria.

As you ask around, the Centaurs still seem friendly enough, but a bit guarded. When you ask about Pholus, the Chief Stallion, you get the same answers, you'd best speak with his Daughter, Pelonius, who lives in a forested area outside of town.

Mak didn't want to stir up any unrest and comported himself about the community as one might expect someone familiar with the places customs would. After all he'd spent some time speaking with the centaur refugee aboard ship and was fairly conversant with the local laws and customs, or at least he thought so.

Once he was settled in and his thirst slaked for the moment he struck up a conversation with Tsak over his second pint. "I wonder old friend if some of those Deep things have influenced the people here. It seems a bit stodgy here, don't you think?"

To all of you, it becomes plainly clear that things are tense, and the fact that the Centaurs are Tribal (with each Tribe composing of several families and several herds on the island) isn't helping matters. You overhear that Pholus, the Chief Stallion, who makes all the decisions, (sort of like a king, but he doesn't have absolute power, and does have to convince the others to work with him) has recently left on the ship The Pounding Fury with several other local herd leaders to Bridge Island, the reason behind their journey, they would not say.

They have been gone a couple of months, and Pelonius, (Pholus' daughter) has be left in charge, with the support of Hollyhocks, a Druid whose word holds some weight. With the Chief Stallion missing, several of the Tribes are jockeying for position, either to get their favoured candidate to become Chief Stallion, or using the lack of a Chief Stallion (and by extension, arbitrator) to gain some advantage over other Tribes. There is genuine worry that Tribal fighting may break out without Pholus to calm things down.

When Mak heard that Pholus was missing he said. "He's not really missing is he, he's just away. There is a difference. Unless his ship got detoured or eaten by some sea monster, then he'd be missing..or lunch."

Seems like we should at least try to get an audience with Pelonius and the best way to do that is to reach out to her right hand druid Honeyhocks...um..Hollyhocks...say, is that like sweetcheeks, but in horse?"

Had Mak the free coin he'd have bought a round for the tavern, but since he didn't he just tipped the server a little heavily. (2gp) and moved on when the others were ready.

Kiwina arrives just in time to learn that they should not leave Mak to his own devices among civilized people. Assuming a druid named after a flower, and aren't half of all druids named for plants?, is named for her rear. Leave it to a human. . . "Hollyhocks is one of the island's elders."

Mak saw no reason to keep the kraken a secret in talking amongst themselves. The crew was going to talk, the centaurs were going to talk, and most importantly Rainard and Bertrum would be talking. It was only a matter of time before the tale would be all over town. They might have a responsibility to the local leadership to warn them about it before the locals came to them wanting solutions and might even garner some favor with them by alerting them prior to getting those requests for solutions.

Mak was content with his lot as he'd recently discovered Pantheon's history with his family. In fact it was an important part of the family artifact he carried. The Ebonstrike as it was called was imbued with holy power and in the hands of the son of an Ebonblade was a powerful weapon. Unfortunately it did require the sacrifice of a few bits of gold.

For that Mak had no regrets, but it did put him in a bit of a bind. While he was far from destitute and if he sold a couple of things he'd be able to live comfortably until he died of old age, he wasn't as liquid as he'd been on Liontaur Isle. A night in an inn here and there, a good time or four in the taverns, that was about all he'd be able to manage for the time being.

So when most everyone decided to stay over Mak took it in stride. Well, if we are to be here all night we're behind on our drinking. I for one am going to get Tsak drunk while we study the Etymology of names here on the island and how one could be named for their hocks. Tsak my friend, how do you suppose these centaurs choose names, this sweetcheeks one seems intriguing, what is her name again, Honeyhocks, no Hollyhocks, how do you ever suppose that name came up and is it her given name or acquired...you know...organically.... Mak said as his conversation trailed off while he and the fighter made their way to the inn.
