Rolth Niheow (BatMark) (57/57 HP | AC: 16; Touch: 12; CMD: 23)
Monday February 15th, 2021 12:16:33 PM

Hearing that questions on the magic and curse have been directed at our experts in eldritch and religious things, Rolth focuses his attention on the matters affecting taurkind that Chief Harkin raised. "Thank you, Chiefs, we are glad to have been of service to the people. As far as the remaining Houndstooth Clan members, I do not think they have enough taurs left to protect and grow their hold on their own. But I wonder if Domi has guided our path here, with a potential solution that resolves their precarious position while also taking advantage of the offer from the Purple Duke of Minotaur Isle. You could consider whether granting the Duke's request to send some of his folk here would allow you to kill two hellhounds with one spear, so to speak. The minotaurs' fierce fighting style and skilled traders would complement those of the Houndstooth liontaurs, and the Houndstooth folk could guide and monitor the minotaurs as they learn our ways and customs. I hope that you will consider this option."

Tsak cocks an eyebrow in surprise as the amulet is so easily broken. He cannot tell if it was magic or mundane.

By all means have at it and break them all.

Of Falco and Elyas he asks Is there any way to tell if breaking them diminishes their power?

Kiwina softly says, "Grandfather, I need to see what has just happened." after Longclaw destroys the amulet. He then asks Rolth if they had had already delivered the Duke's formal proposal -- by his recollection they had first gone in search of Nantyr in hopes of presenting it simultaneously to all who would need to make the decision.

While Kiwina is speaking, the spirits cast a detect magic. He looks to make sure that the damaged amulet was one of the magical ones, and to confirm that Longclaw's dagger is magic as well. He continues to observe the Council while the Petals are talking with them.

DM Mark - A Proposal
Tuesday February 16th, 2021 12:53:37 AM

Falco is a bit astonished that Grayak was able to damage the amulet Tsak took out.
Rolth suggests that the Houndstooth Clan has too few remaining members to continue, but perhaps the Council would consider the Purple Duke’s request to send some of his mintotaur folk here, and these minotaurs could perhaps make a home with these surviving liontaurs could live with them, benefiting both peoples there.
Tsak offers for the liontaurs here to break all the amulets, and he asks his friends if this indeed has ended their power?
Kiwina silently calls on his ancestral spirits, asking them to determine if the destroyed amulet and Grayak’s dagger are magic. After a couple of rounds, the spirits speak in a tinkling voice that is not really speech but still Kiwina knows that the amulet has a weak magic aura consistent with the lingering aura of something that once held magic but no longer does. He also knows that Grayak’s dagger is not magic. Kiwina’s sharp eye will tell him that Grayak’s dagger is probably adamantine.
Mak says that the Houndstooth Clan survives, and that he and his friends stopped what threatened them.

(I presume Tsak follows though and dumps the other amulets out, though some detected as magic while others did not. Do you put them all out there?)

If any other amulets are put on the table, Grayak happily carves them up.

As for the minotaurs, this is the first time the Council is hearing about a proposal of minotaurs being sent here.

Irian looks at the Petals with his one says, ”Minotaurs coming here? Why, and to what purpose? If the thought is to have them live with the remnants of the Houndstooth Clan, well, we would need to discuss this with them. That clan was always a bit standoffish, but perhaps that was just Nantyr.”

Tenzar then speaks up, ”Minotaurs eh? Hmmm. Perhaps we could establish a place for them near my holding. Do you think they would take to mining and smithing?”

Harkin looks at the Petals. ”You know, I had a different idea. We had discussed this briefly. How would you Petals like to form a Clan of our own here? I mean, you wouldn’t be an official liontaur clan, but we could work things out. You could bring others and settle here. What say all of you, is land and a clan holding reward enough for what you have done for us? We’d help you get started - livestock, seed, teach you how to build. Or perhaps you’d prefer to live here as merchants? You already have a ship to start. Why Falco, you could even set up a shrine to your Warper-Sar and bring more of your owl folk. What about your Elyas? A teacher of the arcane arts might be a good addition here.”

“Oh, and exactly what does the Purple Duke want? What is his proposal? Does he seek a minotaur settlement here like there are liontuars near a place they call Greenfell?”

----------------------------------
Outside, Mak has not really answered the guards’ questions.

”You know, if you don’t wanna tell us what happened out there, we’re not gonna make you. But I think the fate of a Clan is something we ought to know about.”
“Yeah, exactly what happened to them? What sort of thing did you stop? C’mon, you can tell us - one guard to another.”
“It’s kinda hard to believe something out there could threaten a whole clan. What did you see?” “Is that how you hurt your leg?”

Mak laughed at the last question. "No, I hurt my leg in battle. As for the fate of the Houndstooth clan, what remains of them is safe. Even as one guard to another you must realize that the chiefs will tell you soon enough. If they had wanted everyone to know before they'd come up with a plan my friends wouldn't be talking to them behind closed doors."

"Tell me though. Why is it that the clans are so..competitive? They almost seem to dislike one another."

As the amulets are shattered Falco continues using detect magic to insure that the magic or curse is in fact broken when the material is broken. If show he will just chalk the whole thing up to being a mystery. By the time he catches up an offer for running a town is, oddly, on the table.

"I can see some appeal to having a place for refugees to go but really, that may not be the best use of our abilities. Some of us have some leadership skills but when got this far by tackling problems head on. Certainly I cannot speak for the others but I do not think in of our goals in life go in that direction unless it was just establishing a home base."

Tsak does indeed hand over all the amulets and watches with satisfaction as they are destroyed.

He feels that the offer to stop adventuring and start a clan should be discussed as a group, and surely the council don't expect an answer on the spot. If so it would be a no from Tsak.

He leaves the explanation of the Duke's intention to Rolth and Kiwina.

Kiwina has no desire to live as far inland as the Houndstooth clan holdings are, but does not broach that subject at this time.

"We would be happy to see all of the amulets destroyed. I think a half of one would be enough for use to use if we need to warn others what to avoid."

Hoping to support Rolth in greater explanations, Kiwina mentions, "The Purple Duke was indeed interested in placing a colony of minotaurs on the island if it meets the approval of this Council. He wrote the details in a letter for us to provide to you. . . And since we do not seem to be waiting on Nantyr any longer, perhaps this is the time. Or perhaps not, if the loss of much of the Houndstooth clan is a more pressing matter."

"If it pleases you, I would be delighted to present the Duke's proposal now. With your leave, I can open and read it to all who are assembled here, as one of the Duke's representatives to your Council. Then you would be well-positioned to decide whether it should be addressed now, perhaps in concert with the fate of the Houndstooth clan, or independently at a more appropriate time. As to the matter of settling down ourselves as villagers or merchants, I must confess that I am not certain that is the path that Domi is leading me down for now, as much as I am drawn to this land and its taurs. There are still dangers afoot, and the Eight Petaled Rose is called to take them on. You earlier asked whether the Deep is defeated, and the answer is almost certainly not. The bit of tentacle that we destroyed seemed to be only a small piece of a great abomination, and at sea, we did see a great rock that is striking in its likeness to the shape of these amulets. I would unravel that mystery before declaring victory over the Deep. In any event, here and now, shall I present the Duke's proposal?"

DM Mark - A Proposal
Wednesday February 17th, 2021 2:12:41 AM

Falco is a bit puzzled these amulets now seem to be so easy to destroy. Indeed, as the amulets are destroyed, they seem to lose their enchantments. He politely declines running a clan holding.
Tsak turns out all the amulets on the table, about 14 in all.
Kiwina agrees with the destruction of the accursed amulets. He informs the Council that the Purple Duke would like to establish a permanent minotaur settlement on Liontaur Isle.
Rolth offers to read the Purple Duke’s proposal. He also politely declines the offer to run a settlement here. He says that whatever force was at work here is not gone, though some sort of tentacle was a piece of it. That piece at least was destroyed in the grotto.
Mak explains his injury, and tells the other guards that they will need to see what the chiefs choose to tell them about what happened with the Houndtooth Clan. He asks why the clans seem so competitive and even a bit disagreeable.

Regarding the amulets, Knowledge Arcana DC 15 or Intelligence DC 17:Highlight to display spoiler: {You are puzzled that you were unable to break the magical amulets in the grotto, but you recall that three things have happened since then: The grey tentacle detected as magic, was destroyed, and no longer detected as magic. The altar was not magic, but it was broken up. The amulets were removed from the grotto.}

Harkin says, “It’s a pity you are not interested in forming a clan of your own here. I think your group would be able to build an interesting clan, though I wonder how you would establish which of you would be chief. Ah well. That was offered as a reward, so we shall consider another reward for your help. Tenzar, I presume you brought what we had discussed?”

Tenzar nods and says, ”As for the Purple Duke’s message, it appears it was sealed and intended for the Council. While I appreciate the Petals’ willingness to read it to us, I think it might be better that we read the message and discuss it among ourselves.”

Harkin continues, ”Yes, we have much to discuss. Including what to do about the Houndstooth Clan. I am worried about the viability of so small a group on their own.”

“Good Petals, we are grateful for your help to this point. We would like to discuss this further. May we ask you to leave us and return tomorrow afternoon? Perhaps you can ask that archer to come as well. Arostle, Browlney - will you see to our guests' needs?”

Arostle and Browlney nod and lead the Petals out.

------------------------
Outside, Mak is met with puzzled looks regarding his question about clans’ competitiveness.

”Competitive? Dislike? Oh no, they’re just from different clans.” As if that explains things. Which it does not for Mak, but seems to for them.

The the doors to the Council Hall open and the guards that were launching outside jump to their feet. Arostle and Browlney come out with the Petals.

Aristotle says, ”Well my friends, what is your pleasure? I am happy to entertain you at my home this evening. If you prefer to explore the town, I’m sure Browlney here can show you around. I understand the Council has provided you a place to rest for the night.”

Arostle and Browlney look at you expectantly.

At Browlney's offer to show them around town Mak added. "I'm in need of some laundering and a fresh set of clothes. This past adventure has left me with nothing but my military uniform."

"Then perhaps you can show Tsak and myself a good drinking establishment."

Rolth of course bows to the wishes of the Council and agrees to return at the appointed time tomorrow. He recovers his gear and lets Mak know the basic outlines of how things went--the amulets have been drained of power and destroyed, and we return on the morrow to pick up the conversation about what comes next and the Duke's proposal. "A drinking establishment sounds good about now! And some good grub to go with it! Could we stop by later in the evening, Arostle? Lead on, Browlney!"

"No, Mak. They didn't feel the sway of the Deep, but one of them destroyed the amulets with an admantine dagger. They also asked us to return tomorrow afternoon -- yourself included."

Kiwina thinks it best to return to the Rose and get out of the finery, then go reprovision. He'd also noticed that Ramsey received 150 gold earlier -- more than the 50 he'd said was needed -- and wants to make sure most of the excess goes to stores for the boat. Perhaps this would be a good time for folks to visit the catacombs?

Elyas continues to ponder the mystery of the amulets, but still isn't sure whether it is time, distance, destruction of the tentacle, or something else entirely that has caused the magic to fade. He will join his companions, but not overindulge, as these matters weigh heavily on his thoughts.

Mak ask his friends how things went with the Council. Then he tells Browlney he need some clean clothes, and perhaps some new ones as well. And then a good tavern for food and drink.
Rolth fills Mak in, and agrees some good food and such are in order. He asks Arostle if the Petals could stop by later.
Kiwina lets Mak know that one of the chiefs was able to destroy the amulets with what he thinks is an adamantine dagger. Kiwina heads to the ship for his things.
Tsak likewise goes to the ship to get his things. He sees Esmerelda slyly pretending to be asleep to lure any rats into a false sense of security. Or maybe she’s asleep. In any event, she looks so content he leaves her there.
Elyas ponders things, but the destruction of the amulets remains something of a mystery to him.

(Not sure what went wrong with my spoiler text in the previous post, but it’s fixed now. Your DM will note that he included the option of a simple Intelligence Check as an option, but no one used that option.)

Mak thinks it odd that they were able to destroy the amulets with an adamantine dagger, since he tried to do so with his adamantine sword.

The Petals make their way to their ship, and Arostle and Browlney go as well. Stepping aboard, Ramsey is there as are a few of the crew. Ramsey seems to be overseeing some crates and barrels being stowed, and you see a good deal of rope, sailcloth, pulleys, and such on the docks in front of the ship.

”Ah, welcome back. You had a good morning I trust. I’ve paid the crew, an’ they’re most grateful. A well paid crew keeps people sharp an’ loyal I say.”

Having your clothing cleaned can be arranged. When Mak asks about purchasing clothing, Browleny repeats his assertion that there are not ready made human clothes in Chessford, though there are taylors that can make whatever is required. At this point, Aristotle speaks up. ”Clothing eh? Well Browlney, sometimes it’s not what you know, but who you know. Come with me.” Aristotle is pretty agile for his age, and you can see he knows a lot of folks in the dock area as he winds his way through the bustle. Eventually, you find yourselves in a warehouse area as he interrupts a human and liontaur talking outside a large door.

Arostle addresses the human, ”Begging your pardon Parl, but I have some customers that may be in need of some goods. Can you spare a moment?”

Parl dismisses the liontaur he was talking with, who scowls a bit as he leaves. ”Ah, Aristotle, anything for you my friend. Come with me, let’s see what we have.” He opens the door to a warehouse. Inside are a few humans and liontaurs. There are shelves and bundles with all manner of things. He leads you all to an area where he has suitable clothing, mostly in the style of Asildur and it’s neighboring areas. His prices are fair. The clothing may need a bit of tailoring here and there, but Parl can have that done in short order, and about 30 min later you have what you want. Interestingly, he even has some centaur clothing, mostly in a soft leather decorated in leaf patterns.

It’s early afternoon when Arostle tells you he will see you later. Browlney takes you to a fairly nice tavern called The Pig’s Pride. Prices are a bit high, but not outrageous. However, the food and drink are excellent. They seem to have some sort of specialty bacon. It has an interesting sweet, smokey spiciness to it with a flavor that’s hard to place, but it’s really good.

As you eat, Browleny says, ”Well, the offer to form a new clan. Not sure I’ve ever seen the like of that before. And you turned it down? And what of the survivors of the Houndstooth Clan? There are a couple that Tenzar sent along to Chessford. I suppose they’ll want to rejoin their kin.”

The tavern has about a dozen liontaurs here. Over in the corner, you see some dwarves with a big platter of bacon and some ale. There are also a few humans in here, and they nod at your group as you enter.

At the warehouse Mak purchased a set of rugged clothing suitable for exploring and allowed measurements to be taken so they would fit his somewhat stout frame. Mak tipped the tailor a couple of gold coins and bid the merchant farewell.

The Pig's Pride looked satisfactory to Mak and like his friend Tsak he also imposed a limit on himself of three pints. He was not happy about it, but with the 14 amulets having left the Petals possession he wanted to be ready when they came back to haunt the heroes. He nodded at the dwarves and men as he tried to take their measure.

Mak purchases some clothing, tipping the taylor that adjusts the fit. At the Pig’s Pride, he acknowledges the dwarves and men in there. He doesn’t notice anything unusual about them. He asks Browlney about the Council discussion.
Falco shares his thoughts on how the amulets may have been changed so they could be destroyed. He’s pretty sure it was mostly related to the destruction of that awful piece of tentacle that was on the altar.
Elyas says he would like to visit the two Houndstooth Clan refugees in the morning.
Rolth agrees and asks Browlney if he will arrange a meeting. He keeps a sharp eye out for anyone tailing or watching the Petals as they move through town.
Kiwina is also interested in talking with the two refugees. He laments the seeming lack of vegetable among the liontaurs.
Tsak enjoys the ale and the bacon.

Looking around, Kiwina will notice the humans at another table actually have vegetable to eat. Inquiring, he is offered cooked greens, some cooked peas in their pods, and either cooked or raw carrots. Tsak asks and finds there are a number of other things available, including some nut and honey based sweets and some spiced breads.

Browlney replies to Mak, ”What will be revealed to the Clans? Well, that would be up to the each Clan Chief that is there, and how they choose to share this info among their clans. I’d think they’d be pretty open about things, especially the amulets and the outsiders in that grotto.

Browlney is happy to arrange a meeting with the two Houndstooth Clan refugees in the morning.

As discussed before, Browlney will take you around town. There’s nothing particularly unusual. The buildings are made mostly of stone, with wood and metal used here and there. The folks are neither friendly nor unfriendly. Kiwina does get some stares, moreso the further you move away from the dock area. There seems to be a small dwarven quarter here, with shops selling metal and leather goods. There are a few humans that seem to live here near the docks, as well as a few centaurs though you suspect most are just passing through.

Shadows lengthen as the warm afternoon portends a pleasant evening. Browlney will leave you at Arostle’s house, a rather grand place with wide, open windows and doorways. Browlney asks if he should meet you at the guest house or your ship in the morning.

Arostle welcome you. You are brought in to a large room adjacent to an inner courtyard and garden. ”Welcome, welcome. So, what did you think of the Council Meeting? I’ll tell you, the look on their faces when you turned down their offer of a clan, well, that was something. I got the impression that Harkin and Tenzar still have some reward in mind for you though. Tomorrow's meeting should be interesting.”

Drinks are brought in, mostly a very nice blue wine and some ale or minted water for those that prefer. Dinner is a nice assortment of things, mostly meat based though there are some breads and some starchy tubers of some kind.

In addition, he asks some questions about the creatures in the grotto and is very interested in the Chuul as he’s never heard of such a creature. If you mention the hybrid liontaur-octopus thing he’s pretty horrified.

Eventually, he will bid you good night and ask if you need a guide? You will need one to the guest house, but your ship is easy to find from here.

Mak still wasn't convinced the amulets were indeed destroyed despite the claims that the tentacle and altar was somehow fortifying them. It seemed a stretch to him and one based on guesses rather than facts. What was more easy to believe was that the petals had been tricked by the clan chiefs.

So he kept an eye on Arostle to see if perhaps the taur was hiding an amulet about his person while keeping his distance. Mak didn't say much that evening but smiled and answered any questions put to him.

OOC: Perception +5, Roll 9 (ugh); Diplomacy +1, Roll 14;

Though Mak would prefer a bed to his hammock aboard ship he trusted the crew of the Rose moreso than these liontaurs so when the evening came to a close he excused himself and left with whoever was also returning to the ship.

If others are going back to the boat he will happily head back there though he does not feel the need to venture the night streets alone, given his stature.

Kiwina has carrots, and some of the overly-softened greens and breads. But mostly he enjoys the ale. While Mak is able to drink prodigious amounts for a human, Kiwina out-masses Mak considerably and easily keeps the same pace.

When Browlney asks, Kiwina replies that he personally will be at the ship. He feels closest with the spirits when he is on the water. He would not expect everyone to go to the ship, however, when more comfortable quarters are available.

At Arostle's house, Kiwina does not try to give a serious answer about his impression of the council meeting. But he does note, "And Rolth would make a more than competent chief, if only he felt Domi wanted it." Since the party is not hiding anything from Arostle, it seems likely that descriptions of the Chuul and the fighting will include mentioning the hybrids and the undead.

Kiwina is up and ready by the time it's time to meet the Houndstooth Clan refugees in the morning.

Rolth thanks Browlney for his guidance around town, and Arostle for his welcome. Hard to argue with a second dinner and another round of ale! With respect to the Council meeting, Rolth will allow that he was quite surprised--and proud--to be offered a clan of our own. "It is a pity that Domi has not called us to that path," he offers with a sideways glance and smile toward Kiwina. "Perhaps one day it will be different.. In the meantime, how do you think things went, Arostle? Are they likely to be well disposed to our request on the Purple Duke's behalf?"

At the end of the evening, Rolth is content to go to the Rose, since all others seem to be headed there, but if others will stay in the guest house, that would be his preference. In the morning, he will return to the Rose and don his courtier's clothes that were gifted to us by the Duke for just this purpose, and suggest that others do the same. Then off to meet the refugees before heading to the Council meeting at the appointed time.

He rises to study some more, but ignores Rolth's suggestion about the fancy clothes, preferring to fade into the background a bit while all the flash gitz do the fancy talking.

DM Mark - Council  d20=1 ;
Monday February 22nd, 2021 2:57:35 AM

Mak Mak remains suspicious of everyone. Those clan chiefs are a tricksey bunch. Even this Arostle can’t be trusted. Mak heads to the ship.
Falco enjoys the meal at Arostle’s house and will sleep aboard the ship.
Kiwina makes due with the meal, and prefers the spiritual connection to the water he feels aboard the ship.
Rolth admits to being surprised at the Council’s offer, and he asks Arostle how he thinks the meeting went. He will go with the others to the ship and dress in his finery in the morning, suggesting others do the same.
Elyas tolerates the evening, eager to get back to the ship to study. He keeps his clothing simple the next day.
Tsak reluctantly dresses up the next day.

Aristotle says, ”That meeting was interesting. All were surprised that you folk would forgo a clan holding. I think it kinda made Tenzar mad, but I’m not sure why. I think my might have cost him something, maybe a bet or something. He hates that the most, losing money.” He bids you good night as you leave later.

The evening aboard the ship is quiet, the muted sound of water lapping against the hull is a reassuring sound. Morning comes with the smell of good food. Ramsey makes sure you have a lovely breakfast. Clearly he sent out for some baked goods, and had some eggs and sausages cooked and ready there on the ship.

Browlney drops by the docks and takes you to the refugees. They’re still a bit traumatized. They recall Nantyr and some of the others returning to the clan holding a few times and leading others away to “something greater.” A few could sense that something was wrong and fled. These two however were there when Nantyr and some others came and forced those that would not go with them, and these two hid. When they emerged, most everyone was gone. They fled toward Chessford and wound up at the Goldmane Clan holding. They don’t have much to add beyond this.

Later that day, you return to the Council of Clans. They still require you not bring your weapons into the Council Hall, and guards stand ready to hold them for you if you wish. Aristotle is there, along with the other Council members you saw before, and a few other liontaurs of some importance. They are generally well dressed and groomed.

Harkin seems to want to address two things initially. He asks if you have changed your minds about forming a clan here on Liontaur Isle.

Then he says, ”Well, it seems that the Purple Duke of the minotaurs has a proposition. Just as there is a liontaur enclave established on Minotaur Isle, the Duke seems to think that might be a good idea here as well. He also proposes that we meet with him to discuss establishing some better trade relations, perhaps banding the Taur Isles together in this and strengthening our trade position with the mainlands. Jasak here thinks this a bad idea, worries it may be a ruse or lead to trouble. But it is an interesting idea.”

“So tell me, is this a good idea? Can the minotaurs be trusted in this? And I wonder what this means for Centaur Isle?”

Rolth Niheow (BatMark)  d20+14=33 ;
Monday February 22nd, 2021 6:56:08 AM

"I for one think that the Duke's offer is a good one. There are many good reasons to join forces. The minotaurs are fierce warriors whose fighting style will complement those of us liontaurs in the dark times that we face, with the threat from the Deep that still lingers. They are also expert traders, and we will profit more greatly in partnership than in competition with them in dealing with the mainland. We have dealt directly with the Duke several times, and found him to be fair, generous, and wise, so yes, I believe he can be trusted if you make a deal with him. And if I am wrong, it will be only a small settlement of minotaurs that an island of strong liontaurs can easily monitor and control. There may be some minor incidents as we learn each others' ways, but nothing that can't be worked out. As far as Centaur Isle, I have little direct experience, but I imagine that they will not want to be left out of a strong trading alliance. Add to that the strong possibility that Domi is leading us down this path of unity and a return to noble grace, and I think you have many reasons to accept the offer."

Mak couldn't disagree more with Rolth's statement, but he was outside once more and didn't hear it. Diplomacy was Rolth's thing and Mak was still distrustful of these taurs. He found them, those rank and file ones, to be bigoted. So while some of them might have high minded ideals, outside of those enlightened few these taurs wanted nothing to do with the others, nor even non taurs.

He supposed human settlements might show the same attitudes to those like Tsak, but after Greenfell Mak wondered if this measure might be a little too premature.

Given all his attitudes he would not speak out as he'd essentially, even if tacitly, agreed to work towards the Purple Dukes goals. He'd focus on being vigilant in case things went sideways.

When Rotlh finishes Falco takes two steps forward to be better seen in the group of big folks.

"I think Rolth has the right of it though I would offer one small difference. A small settlement to build trust and understanding is a good thing. I would caution against the idea of 'monitor and control' as that will only reinforce and give place to the growth the bigotries of the past."

He pauses and looks at each of the members of the council.

"The way of the Wold is change, evolution and mutation. The Taur Isles can be a force in the Wold if they band together and extend a hand to each other and to those outside. Yes you have many fierce warriors but so does everyone so the use of warriors must be a last resort. Trade, alliance and cooperation will get you farther."

If told before leaving the ship that weapons will not be allowed in the Council meeting, Kiwina leaves his on the Rose.

Kiwina's ears perk up when he hears that some of the Houndstooth clan fled before the majority were forced out. The more that survived, the better they will be able to defend their home if they can be found and allowed to return.

Kiwina has not changed his mind about joining a clan.

"I cannot speak for the centaurs of Centaur Isle, as that is not my home. But from what I know, it seems to me that an alliance that did not offer to include them would be seen as a potential threat. On the other hand, all three races have managed to adjust to each other on Bridge Isle. That might be encouraging."

"From our dealings with him, I think you can trust the Duke to take some care in the choice of who to send here, in an attempt to minimize friction. But minotaurs definitely have their own, and sometimes odd, point of view. You may have to make accommodations as well. I guess the question is whether you can reach an agreement that would make it worthwhile."

(Diplomacy = 15 to support Rolth)

"Lastly, I would point out that we also fought one of these agents of the deep on Minotaur Isle, although of a different sort. You just may have a common enemy -- and Elyas is right that they could use taurs' distrust of each other against us."

DM Mark - Council
Tuesday February 23rd, 2021 12:58:26 AM

Mak does not accompany his friends inside, choosing to stay outside the Council Hall.
Rolth, Kiwina, and Falco make eloquent arguments for why these liontaurs can trust a trade and settlement proposal from the Purple Duke.
Elyas is concerned that it might be premature for the Taurs to be risking strife by mixing this way given that something attacked one of the Clans. Jerak gives a nod at this, seeming to agree with Elyas’ caution.

There is some discussion among the Council members, and it is clear from listening to them that they have been discussing this subject all morning. Finally, Harkin says, ”We think this is a good proposal from the Purple Duke, but we take our commitment to such a venture seriously. The liontaur settlement in Greenfell was the product of several liontuars wanting to start a new life somewhere else. We will think on this some more and will choose how we respond to the good Duke. But most of us do agree there is value in what the Purple Duke offers here.”

Irian Stormeye fixes you with his one eye as he continues, “As for the Houndstooth Clan, we will send aid and leadership. This is not the first time that calamity has befallen a clan, and rebuilding a clan must be done carefully so as not to damage a clan's pride or make them beholden to another. But rest assured, we will see to their welfare and rebulding.”

Gruak Longclaw says, “Now, as for what to do with you. You have done the liontaurs are great service, and this merrits a reward. A clan and a holding is not your calling. I accept this, though I do not fully understand. We liontaurs are a proud people, and we pay our debts - one way or another. Tenzar?”

Tenzar says, ”It’s a pity that archer of yours was too intimidated to join us. Perhaps he’s still smarting from his adventure with that horse.” He motions impatiently to two attendants, and a large chest and a small one are placed on the table. ”These are for you, a reward for putting your life on the line for our people. In this one is gold, brought from the earth by my clan. And in this smaller chest are four gems, each capable of summoning a different elemental as you see fit. We thank you for your service.” Tenzar has a bit of a dour look on his face, as his gaze passes between the Petals and the other Council Members.

Sense Motive DC 17Highlight to display spoiler: {You sense Tenzar has an internal struggle here. No anger or ill will is directed toward the Petals, but he is not happy about something.}

In the larger chest, you will find 10,000 gold pieces. In the smaller one, you find a velvet platform supporting four large gems - a clear quartz, a brown tigereye, a blue-green aquamarine, and a fiery orange topaz.

Harkin continues. ”We offer this with our thanks. And perhaps you would be good envoys to deliver a message from the Council to Pholus, the Chief Stallion on Centaur Isle. Afterall, you are a group that has representatives of both our peoples.”

----------------------------------------
Things are fairly quiet outside for Mak. The guards make some small talk with him. Eventually one asks, ”So how come you’re out here with us when you had the option of going in with your friends? Are you… is there something you’ve done that makes you not want to face the Council? I hear you all were guests of Tenzar and Arostle. And Browlney. That makes you a person of some importance, eh?”

It was true, Mak had no great wisdom or ability to resist evil in it's various forms and thus far he considered himself lucky to have resisted the temptation of the amulets of the Deep. He feared the day some evil force might try to turn him as the heartseeded did his family so many years ago.

Wednesday February 24th, 2021 1:51:02 AM

Mak responds to the guards questions, telling them sternly that “evil is insidious and comes at you when you least expect it.” He does not seek glory, leaving that to others.
Falco thanks the Council for their generosity. He notes some dissatisfaction and tells the council perhaps the Petals will one day return to liontaur isle, since nothing ever fully off the table.
Elyas is impressed by the large reward. He examines the gemstones wondering about their enchantments.
Tsak is also impressed by the large reward.
Rolth thanks the Council, assuring them it will be put to good use. He accepts the request to convey a message to Centaur Isle, and mentions Bridge Island as well.
Kiwina is glad to hear the Council’s commitment to help the remnants of the Houndstooth Clan. He likewise agrees to carry the Council’s message to the centaurs.

Outside, Mak’s warning to be ever vigilant against evil is met with a few smirks. But a couple of the guards seem to listen intently and gulp when he mentions this insidious evil.
------------------------------------
Inside, the Council seems to have finished their deliberations.

In response to Falco, Tenzar says a bit grumpily, ”Well, rest assured that the offer of a clan holding is indeed off the table now.”

Irian replies, ”Oh, come now Tenzar. At least you no longer owe the Council. And you can no longer dangle it in front of us. By Domi, that was becoming tiresome.”

Harkin cuts in, seeming to divert the conversation from an old argument. ”Indeed, we are grateful for your work, not just here but in striving for peace among all the Taurs if the tales are true. Thank you. We will draft a message for your group to kindly convey to Pholus on Centaur Isle. The timing seems right, and the Purple Duke’s approach is a good one. We will get back to him as you bring our request to Pholus.

“In the meantime, you’ll want to get your ship ready, and perhaps even rest here in port for a bit. We will make our guest house available if you wish. Let us know if you require any supplies for your voyage and we will see to it. Do you have anything further for us? If not, perhaps Arostle will escort you out. And please also convey our thanks to your friend who chose to stay outside.”

"Thank you for your support for bringing peace among the taurs! We will strive to be good emissaries to Pholus. With respect to provisions for the journey, we would appreciate assistance in stocking food and drink, typical ship maintenance supplies, and a good measure of firewood for the Rose, thank you." He is happy to accompany Arostle from the hall, where he conveys the Council's gratitude to Mak, even as the fellow springs forward to convey the practical sign of said gratitude with unaccustomed alacrity.

Rolth is pleased to see Elyas' fascination with the magic gem, and wonders who else among us will claim one. He is happy to leave those to the others, generally having his hands full with charging and singing and such forth and so on.

In town, Rolth does have some mundane shopping to do, and also makes a trip to the Catacombs, to replace his tattered leather armor that he has worn since the Taurnament of Roses. As he goes, he is filled with a sense of contentment, sure that we are back on the path to uniting the taurs, as Rolth, Kiwina, and our sadly departed minotaur companion Sable first set out from Bridge Island to achieve.

It amuses Kiwina to see Mak taking the "beast of burden" role, but he doesn't mention that out loud.

As for the gems, maybe it would be best to know more about them before deciding what to do. OOC: Standard elemental gems, I assume?

Kiwina also visits the Catacombs, and -- uncharacteristically -- the temple of Pantheon.

Mak help carry a rather heavy chest that the Petals bring out.
Elyas is interested in these gems. They are Elemental Gems, each able to summon a large elemental when crushed.
Rolth thanks the council and pledges to be good emissaries to the centaurs. He does ask for food and ships supplies for the journey.
Kiwina suggest that Ramsey should be consulted on stocking the ship for travel. He ponders the Elemental Gems.

At Rolth’s mention of being emissaries, Harkin will quickly correct him. ”We thank you for your service, but I must let you know that you are not emissaries of the Council. You do not represent us or speak for us. We are not minotaurs with a Purple Duke. We Clan Chiefs are all equals, and we are asking you to deliver a message - nothing more. It may have been different had you elected to form a Clan. I mean no disrespect in this, but it is necessary that we are clear on this point.

"As for supplies, please give a list to Browlney here. He will see to this.”
He give a curt nod to Browlney.

As you leave the Council, Arostle and Browlney go with you. Once you are away, Aristotle chuckles, ”Oh, oh that was worth it. To see that pompous Tenzar have his debt called to pay you lot. That’s gonna stick in his craw for a while, so you might want to steer clear of him. You see he has been putting off his Clan’s tribute to running things - mostly because it’s based on Clan wealth, and the Goldmane Clan is a pretty wealthy one. And he’s occasionally held this over the Council for a while now, implying he may not need to pay for this reason or that. Or that he would only pay for a good cause. And then you came along, and the Council finally had a good cause he could not deny. Oh, that was great. C’mon, I’ll buy you folks a nice dinner.”

Arostle will accompany you to the Rose so you can stowe your chest of gold aboard the ship, and connect Browlney with Ramsey to get provisions. Ramsey is a bit puzzled for a moment, having just been given a princely sum to purchase supplies, but he almost instantly recovers and starts listing a number of “needed” goods - most of which you’re pretty sure he already bought.

There is talk of a saddle and the Catacombs. Aristotle will say to Mak, ”Ah yes. Well, you may find a saddle near the waterfront, but it’s a bit of a speciality item here in Chessford. We should see if my associate Parl has one. Of course, you may wish to wait until you get to Centaur Isle - they are great craftsmen, and often train horses for others. Funny you should mention the Catacombs. Parl’s warehouse is the entrance to the Catacombs here in Chessford. For now, anyway. That seems to change from time to time.”

Arostle takes you to a pleasant open-air cafe overlooking the waterfront, either before or after you do your shopping. The rest is a pleasant evening. When asked, he will inform Kiwina that there is a small shrine to Pantheon in the dock area, tended by a liontaur nun named Mwyerva and frequented mostly by travellers.

Where do the Petals sleep - the Rose or the guesthouse? The guesthouse offers better beds and more amenities. Elyas is glad for a chance to study the gems and his spellbooks.

The next day, a rather rough liontaur shows up at where you slept asking to see Rolth. When Rolth responds he says, ”Ach, I am Traavassk. I was approached by a human, an old warrior by his bearing. He said that I need to teach you the ways of the Raging Shaman. Will you spend the day with me? We need to go to the countryside where we needn’t worry about breaking things. You can bring your friends if you wish, but they’ll need to not be a distraction.”

When Pantheon was mentioned Mak unsheathed his sword and reread a few of the runes he'd deciphered from the fuller on his blade. There he saw the hammer symbol with the coded word Pantheon inscribed below it. Mak decided he'd visit the shrine to learn more about this deity as it obviously was connected to his family in some way. The next section appeared to be some form of oath, but Mak was unable to decipher it's meaning.

Mak excused himself after he and the others did their shopping and with direction from Browlney he went to the shrine to speak with Mwyerva. Once Mak finished at the shrine he supervised the loading of horse feed onto the Rose. (600 lbs, 60 days) and then spoke to Kiwina to let him know he was going to delay training Elmer until they reached Centaur isle.

The next morning he wished Rolth good luck, but decided he'd finish his shopping and practice with his blade for a short while.

Tsak stays aboard the Rose, praising Esmerelda for keeping the rodent population under control.
Rolth sleeps at the guest house provided by the Council. An attendant makes sure his things are cleaned and that he is fed. He’s pleasantly surprised by a strange visitor saying he was told to visit Rolth to teach him some things. Rolth accompanies this stranger outside of town.
Mak makes sure there is food for his horse aboard the Rose. He puzzles over his sword for a bit and then pays a visit to a shrine dedicated to Pantheon. He practices his swordwork near the ship.
Elyas also stays on the ship, enjoying his time there and studying his spells.
Kiwina sleeps aboard the Rose, and knocks around the nearby part of the town including a visit to Pantheon’s shrine with Mak.

Mak and Kiwina visit Pantheon’s shrine. They encounter an elderly liontaur woman tending the shrine. She is polite and asks for Pantheon’s blessings and justice in your lives. She also offers you wooden holy symbols for 2 gp and iron ones for 10 gp. She also has holy water available at standard prices.

Outside of Chessford, Traavassk takes Rolth to a large field. There he teaches Rolth a strange meditation. Strange because he uses the meditation to teach Rolth to focus inward and develop an inner rage even as he sits seemingly calm, and to then release it in a channeled burst as he springs up in a battle stance, eyes bloodshot and breathing heavy. ”You see, many misunderstand rage. They see barbarians and berserkers fly into a rage that fuels their fighting. But there is a deeper power in rage that is easy to miss unless you learn to harness it properly. It is this deeper power that allows a Raging Shaman to do much more than a mere barbarian, and you will learn to share this rage with others. A Raging Shaman does not give in to his anger, but learns to channel that anger into a controlled power.” He goes on to explain a number of powers of a Raging Shaman and the philosophies behind them. Rolth is not sure he believes all of what is said, but he certainly believes that Traavassk does.

By the afternoon, Rolth is exhausted. Traavassk will walk with him back into town and bid him farewell.

The Petals will find that Ramsey is particularly satisfied with things. This ship was already well provisioned. ”That was a right good move gettin these liontaurs to provision your ship for a voyage. I’ve ordered some things from that Browlney fellow. It might take another day or two. It seems he expected we’ll be headed somewhere. Do you mind sharing where it is that we’ll be going?”

At the shrine Mak felt at ease with the caretaker and spoke at length about Pantheon's ideals and goals. As he learned more he came to realize that something deep within him also ascribed to those ideals. When Mwyerva offered the symbols at a small charge, Mak gladly purchased the iron one and felt compelled to offer an additional 400 gold to Pantheon.

OOC: -410 gp

Mak felt that Ramsey should know where they were headed but he wasn't even completely certain, so he offered. "If I heard correctly our destination is the island of Centaurs."

He walks away exhausted but elated at these new insights, with renewed determination to follow the path he has been on since leaving Bridge Island to reunite taurkind. He isn't quite sure how to explain all this raging shaman business to his fellow Petals, but will ask to confer with Falco on tips for how to channel divine energy most effectively. Hopefully, Rolth's knowledge will continue to grow as we adventure on!

Aboard the Rose, he compliments Ramsey on his efforts to provision for our journey, but defers to the Captain for further details of the voyage. He spends some of the intervening time updating his tattoos to reflect our recent adventures.

However, he thinks that unless the Council asks us to do differently, we should make sure to deliver the Council's message to Centaur Isle first, so that it does not get lost or delayed if we encounter serious trouble. Plus things might already be getting bad on Centaur Isle and our knowledge could help. "What do the rest of you think?"

As for the question of where to go next, "I think I agree that we should go to Centaur Isle first, and maybe Bridge Isle on the way, before we investigate that eerie rock. We can at least warn people about the threat that way. I would rather have the taurs prepared for trouble in case it's more than we can handle." Considering how difficult it was to defeat the Chuul and its creations, Kiwina thinks the center of all this is very probably more than they can handle.

Mak listened and when Rolth asked for opinions Mak said softly as to try not to be overheard. "Strategically, bypassing what we clearly suspect to be the enemies location is foolish. We should be arriving there with a fleet of ships and take the island, destroy it, whatever. If we aren't going to that island, or suspect we aren't ready for what awaits us there, then getting anywhere near it would be a mistake. We should give it a wide berth. Even so I'm afraid they will just gain in strength the longer we delay, so unless we are gathering allies to bring with us we shouldn't make any unneeded stops."

"So far tow islands have had at least some interference by these Deep worshipers. we should pass along warning or look for signs of the same kinds of issues on both Centaur and Bridge islands. I fear that we still might be too late if this phenomenon is spread across all of the islands. a single clan going missing is tragic, but not nearly as bad as things could have gotten here with a few more weeks past.

I wonder, is there any way to get a message to the other islands faster than us sailing there? are there any magical communications lined up between islands, or has their relative isolation prevented a network like that from being set up? unfortunately I am not currently able to project messages over such a distance, but I know it is certainly possible.

As the Petals watch and can now see what is going on, it appears there is a male Centaur holding hands with a female Liontaur, and several other Liontaur surrounding them. The leader, who you quickly recognise as Jasak Redtooth, has a face like thunder, (as usual) but is yelling at the couple.

You can only make out some of the words but he's clearly unhappy with their coupling, and these two being, together... which they apparently are. The Centaur is standing between Jasak and the female Liontaur, who appears slightly afraid, but mostly saddened.

Turning to Chief Redtooth--which he hopes is a figure of speech and not a prediction of our gory demise--he offers his thanks for finding the wayward couple. "We'd heard of these two and thought that they might make a fittingly grand addition to our very much Non-Emissary Mission to Centaur Isle. Thank you for finding them for us, Chief, they have been most elusive!" Turning his attention back to the couple with a surreptitious if exaggerated wink, he asks, "So, are you ready for your interview with Captain Kiwina for the open positions on the Rose? She's a fine vessel, and he a fine fellow, if I do say so myself. With your leave, Chief?"

Rolth forces himself to breath normally and await patiently the couple's response and the Chief's reaction to this mad bluff.

Jasak looks at Rolth, suddenly confused by his appearance, but after a moment, things quieten down as he regains his wits.

"Rolth? What are you doing here? You shouldn't be interfering Caliphon here is trying to take away Yuria, one of the Redtooth clan. We cannot allow it." He seems adamant in his response, and the other Liontaur all seem to agree with him, however he does seem like he's not sure what to do about the appearance of a Petal here. He quickly looks around as Mak speaks and begins to notice the rest of you.

"We're going to live with Caliphon's herd! You can't stop me Jasak!" The female Liontaur cries out, both the Centaur and Liontaur are currently semi-hiding behind Rolth, not completely but there's an edge of fear to their actions. "We were looking to book passage to Centaur Isle, and Captain Kiwina said they'd take us if we worked a little... and paid a little..." she deftly follows behind with Rolth's lie.

He does not identify what mission. But the Petals have been with the Council a couple of times now -- the wemics in the crowd might assume it's Council business.

Rolth picks up where Captain Kiwina left off, what a fantastic segue. "Quite right, Captain. As the only official clan representative, Yuria here would put the Redtooth clan in a good tactical position to make the most of any new ties with the Centaurs of the island. Sure would be satisfying to put one over on all those haughty, stuffy other fellows on the Council who are always putting on airs, would it not? And as a Redtooth, I am sure that Yuria is quite fierce enough to hold her own amongst the Centaurs, much less not allow herself to be dragged off against her will and yours, Chief. And of course we Petals shall be there to ensure that all remains in order. So what do you say, Chief? You have the power to make this happen, for the good of your clan, if you will not just allow it, but make it to be so."

Tsak Rezar starts trying to make an opening
Elyas silently supports Rolth
Rolth Niheow tries to diplomatically discuss with Jasak, also trying to read him.
Kiwina attempts to shame (sort of) Jasak, and also see how the crowd is responding.
Falco Ambersier attempts to help, but doesn't seem very convincing.
Mak attempts to support Rolth

Kiwina - Highlight to display spoiler: {The crowd is split, the Liontaurs, who were with Jasak to begin with seem to be on his side, but you'd expect nothing less, the others seem to not mind too much either way, they won't block you, but they won't help you either. They're just waiting to see what happens.}

Rolth - Highlight to display spoiler: {Jasak is semi convinced, he still seems annoyed and as if he wants to stop what he sees as an improper relationship, but appears to not want to go against the Petals}

Jasak looks you over, remaining silent for a few moments as he decides on his next words. He takes a deep breath before speaking, his voice is measured, even, more so than it has been previously.

"My friends, I merely do not believe that this relationship is in the best interests of the Taur peoples... Yuria would make a fine ambassador, and I would indeed relish the opportunity for her to go along with you on your journey, and help you complete your mission." he pauses a moment, looking around at the crowd.

"However, you shouldn't need this fellow..." he indicates Caliphon "... along with you. After all, you are correct, Yuria is the one with the political know how, and the name to help. Caliphon is but a wave in the ocean, and not of any import."

He then turns to Caliphon. "Don't worry, you can remain here under my care until Yuria returns, the Petals are noble and honourable people, I have no doubt they will refund you the price of your passage."

He seems insistent that Yuria and Caliphon not leave together, and something about how he speaks worries you that if you leave Caliphon behind you will not be leaving him in safe hands. Yuria quickly whispers so Rolth and Kiwina can hear -

Rolth and Kiwina - Highlight to display spoiler: {"Please, help... you cannot let them take Caliphon away... we have two hundred gold pieces, that's everything we have, but you must get us out of here!" she seems truly distraught and terrified at the prospect of leaving Caliphon behind.}

Elyas is a bit surprised at how insistent Jasak is being about this. the petals offered passage to both the people in question, they would soon be out of Jasak's hair and shouldn't be any of his business anymore. the taur is not backing down, and Elyas is worried about where this confrontation might go.

he tries to recall any local laws that they might be breaking by going against Jasak's will in this, and if there is any sort of authority that he has to stop both of these people from coming with the Petals

unfortunately, he has absolutely no idea what the rules around here regarding mixed race relations is... (Knowledge Local = 9, natural 1)

Kiwina hopes Rolth can make a better case. Even if they don't manage to get both of the young taurs to Centaur Isle together, he doesn't want to turn one over to Jasak's mercies.

Rolth can see that it would not go well for Caliphon if he remains behind, and is also struck by the possibility that this couple is another sign of Domi's plan to reunite the taurs--a thought that he keeps to himself for now, but it bolsters his resolve.

"Caliphon is a wave in the ocean, is he? Well, that's a sailors sign of luck for sure! His presence on the voyage would assure us of good fortune on the high seas, and Yuria's safe return. For her sake, and that of our mission, I entreat you to reconsider letting him join us, when he could be of such use on the journey. We can see what Domi has in store for each of them upon our return. What say you, wise Chief?" Mak tries to think on his feet.

Mak - Highlight to display spoiler: {There is permissible grounds for a duel, but it isn't to be taken lightly, however, there's no law to cover it either way, technically Caliphon is not a member of the Liontaur family, and so Jasak has no control over him, but he is just leveraging his legitimate control over Yuria to force their hand.}

Jasak looks at the Petals and hears Rolth speak, he takes a deep breath, and apparently realising he's rather outmatched, at least in raw strength, plus the fact he seems a bit uncertain on his legal position, he looks at Rolth and Kiwina.

"Very well... you may take them both. I will allow it, but remember Yuria, this way lies a great many dangers you are not aware of yet. I am only doing my best to look out for you."

The crowd of Liontaurs around the couple begins to disperse as Jasak waves his arm to indicate they should leave, and quickly the whole crowd begins to dissolve, leaving only the Petals and the young couple, who immediately relax a little, and you all realise they look exhausted.

Yuria speaks to Kiwina and Rolth.

"Thank you thank you thank you! Caliphon and I need passage to Centaur Isle, as quickly as you can take us... we can pay 100 gold pieces each... but we must leave soon... if Jasak returns and finds us I don't think we can expect a warm response..." she's almost in tears out of what appears to be fear and relief that they are, for now at least, safe.

He agrees that we should hustle the young couple to the Rose. We can always send for any possessions that they need and aren't carrying at the moment. As we move toward the Rose, he will ask them to relate some of their tale. How did they come to be a couple? "We have no other belongings... we had to leave everything behind. We've been together for about six months. They met about eight months ago just going about town and doing their normal day to day routine, but the attraction was immediate and overwhelming. However Caliphon was too shy, so eventually I asked him out on a date, and we had a secret date that Caliphon thought up, a lakeside moonlight picnic. We quickly fell in love and realised that my family wouldn't condone a relationship with a non Liontaur, and we decided to elope. It wasn't too long before we were discovered, about a week ago. We knew we had to escape as the Jasak and his flunkies were putting pressure on Caliphon, it hadn't come to blows yet, but could any moment..."

She takes a deep breath.

"So this morning we decided to escape and book passage on a ship, Jasak got wind of it and brought his friends to stop us. That's where you come in. I'm afraid I'm not skilled for a ship, I can just about cook, but Caliphon is a decent repairman."

He visits Elmer regularly to ensure the animal is comfortable as well as to get him used to his company.

Tsak Rezar keeps relaxed spending time with the animals on board.
Elyas tries to help sail
Rolth Niheow as does Rolth
Kiwina does a good job sailing the ship, and chats with Caliphon
Falco Ambersier spends time helping the ship and learning how to sail as well.
Mak remains stoically keeping watch over the ship.

Caliphon sighs.

"I had to leave my bowyer shop behind... we were hopefully going to have a couple more days so I could get everything packed up, but Jasak sort of forced our hand... I had hoped to be able to bring some of the stock with me to restart the shop on Centaur Island, that's all..."

He is clearly sad, but not overly so. You get the impression he's happy with the trade of losing the shop but keeping his life and Yuria with him. He and Yuria spend time together, whenever they can, and Yuria tries to help with cooking, being able to help make some of the food taste a bit better than you would have expected.

The first full day of sailing is calming and relaxing, you have time to do some of your own things.

((OoC: Are you guys setting any sort of watch?))

Falco helps out as best he can, he has been learning more and more about sailing. Hearing Caliphon's talk of losing the shop he approaches.

"I grew up in a smithing family so when I left everything I knew was gone as well. Restarting is hard but not without its own rewards. Maybe I can help you get set up a little when we arrive, it seems the right thing to do."

As they day passes Falco is sure to get plenty of rest so his watch shift, sometime overnight, will go well.

Rolth suggests that we divide the Petals into three teams of two for keeping watch, with two teams on duty at any given time while the third takes a rest. He suggests Tsak (darkvision) and Falco (low light) make one team that covers evening/nighttime, with Kiwina (low light) and Rolth (low light) do nightimtime/morning. The two humans, Elyas and Mak, could then be on duty during daylight hours only. Of course the crew will also be working and keeping lookout in shifts.

When on duty, Rolth will prowl the deck, helping with the sailing and keeping an eye out for trouble.

Kiwina agrees with Rolth's suggested rotation, He also suggests Caliphon might help Mak, since Mak always seems to be running out of arrows. And of course, since the Petals were going to Centaur Island anyway, there is no need for them to ask for the 200 gp from the young couple -- maybe it will help them get a start someplace new.

Tsak is happy with the suggestion for dividing the watch.
He spends watch time in the Crow's Nest, and other time in his hammock or helping out around the ship.

Mak was surprisingly adept at climbing the rigging if not simply average at the moment as a sailor. He climbed to the crows nest and took up watch there with his bow ready to shoot at anything that might show up at extreme range. He stowed his quiver and haversack off to one side so it would be handy and he'd be able to camp out there for the day. Mak also kept an eye on their course to make sure they weren't somehow straying.

When given the chance Mak spoke to Caliphon about his craft to see just how much the centaur knew. If Mak was convinced Caliphon knew his stuff, Mak told him they'd find a way to set him up in business. For Mak he knew he'd just donated a few thousand to Pantheon for the insight with his sword, so his funds were low, but if Caliphon was skilled Mak assured him that he'd need a supplier on Centaur island and having a bowyer he could trust would be ideal.

Elyas gets into the routine of working the ship with the ease of familiarity. he enjoys being out on the open sea more than being on land. things were simple and made sense on a ship. the politics and hard moral choices and giant chuul clerics were all left behind them, and the only things that had to be focused on were the ship, the crew, and the weather.
