If there seems to a coherence to the thing's shrieking, Rolth will end his rage and cast a comprehend languages to try to sort it out. If it is just insane bird-gibberish, he'll charge to the attack.

Assuming the latter (added another +2 to each to hit for the charge, I forgot when making the chart):

Morning star to hit +12 = 31, damage 1d8+10 = 11
Morning star to hit +12 = 27, damage 1d8+10 = 13
Paw 1 to hit +9 = 12, damage 1d4+3 = miss?
Paw 2 to hit +9 = 27, damage 1d4+3 = 5
Bite to hit +9 = 18, damage 1d4+3 = 7
Rake 1 to hit +9 = 30, damage 1d4+6 = 7

Either: On the off chance that Rolth pauses in his attack, Kiwina takes a full round of attacks -- AC 15 for 17, AC 27 for 10, AC 20 for 10, & AC 23 for 11

Or: More likely, if Rolth does not pause, Kiwina does not pound the corpse into a greasier mess. Instead, he takes the time to give Rolth another cure (for 9 points).

Mak sees that his ally has comfortably slain the last harpy.

The bodies of the harpies are all around you, now, looking closer you can see they're all wiry and thing, clearly malnourished and their feathers are brittle and breakable. They actually all look rather pathetic. They are all ill and scrawny looking, even in death their faces are contorted into screams of anguish and madness.

Hess speaks up, after closing his mouth from awe.

"You managed to kill them so quickly... I never even got my sword drawn..." his sword is indeed only half drawn from it's scabbard which he then puts away. "What next... these foul creatures may have some trinkets on them, or we can go to the nest and see what is there."

Mak prepares himself for more combat.

Kiwina offers out aid.

Elyas mentions that he's nearly out of spells for the day.

You begin to search the bodies and each other, the bodies look less like they were infected and more like they were ill kept, as if the harpies didn't care much for preening and ensuring they were eating well. Around one of the Harpies necks is an amulet that appears to be tentacles as if they were rising up to choke the wearer... it's somewhat unsettling, but has an odd magical tang too it.

DC 13 Intelligence - Highlight to display spoiler: {It's incredibly similar to the rock formation you saw in the ocean on your way here.}

Once you've cleared the bodies, and head to the nest (as the harpies have nothing of any value on them) you quickly spot more bodies, this time humanoid and wemic, and all partially eaten. Hess immediately stifles a cry.

"[b]That's him... that's Racksaw...[b]" He points to a body which is mostly eaten, but has some nice clothing on it. He lets out an anguished cry and kneels down next to the body.

Looking around you see there is loads of harpy guano here, and indeed even some eggs, however they've all been smashes open, and whatever was within has apparently been eaten... it sends a shiver down your spine.

Within the nest/cave area itself, you find -

3 Light Crossbows
22 Bolts
4 Cutlasses
5 Daggers
2 Longswords
Three potions that are familiar enough that you recognise them to me Light Healing potions (CLW)
Three potions of another type
Two potions of a third type
And another amulet which gives off a magical hum
75 gp, 150 sp.

There is on Racksaw's body +2 Dagger and an Onyx ring that seems to be made of arms coming out of a wave, it also has a slight magical feel to it.

The Harpy guano is also potentially valuable, for each pound you think you could sell it for 1gp, if you so wanted, and each person could probably collect two pounds an hour.

To the rest of the party, he says that he is not keen on hauling guano, but not to forget to include the other boat on the shoreline as part of the spoils while returning to the Rose. He's in favor of getting back to the ship before trying to identify the items they've found.

How long did your captain have it, and where did he get it?"

For that matter, he'd like to know how long the change in Racksaw's mood had been going on.

"Captain, I have to insist that we take every precaution with this thing. Hess told us that the last man to use this amulet had serious changes to his mood and actions, and it is imbued with enchantment magic. that doesn't sound like it was giving him powerful abilities, more that something was controlling him.

and with our recent run-ins with this tentacle motif, I am even more leery than i would normally be. if you want to keep it from falling into other hands, stick it in a lead-lined box and drop it to the bottom of the sea. or bury it. or smash it with a hammer.

or if you insist on taking it with us, still put it in a lead box and give it to me for safekeeping. I do not trust anyone else to resist the temptations of enchantment magic. I.... have experience dealing with invasions of the mind..

Rolth suggest taking it, but in the safest manner he can think of. Highlight to display spoiler: {Perhaps someone who has good willpower should look after it? You're pretty strong willed, maybe it should be you?}

Tsak is frustrated at taking the amulet. Highlight to display spoiler: {It'll take you a little while to fill in the whole unfortunately. }

Hess nods. "I'm not sure when he got it to be honest... or where... I know it was possibly about a month ago that I first saw him wearing it. His behaviour only changed in the last week, maybe two. He was always weary around the Shoals... I understand your concern... but I don't think this amulet has anything to do with it... but then again I'm no wizard..." He shrugs noncommittally. no disrespect Falco, but I think that I should be the one to carry this amulet. I have spent much time studying how to defeat enchantment magics. how many of you have ever been enchanted to do something against your will? how many of you have broken free of that enchantment? I have. it is not something i would want to repeat, and not something I will allow any of you to have to face if i can help it. it seems that the majority is in favor of taking this with us. I implore all of you, leave it in the care of your wizard, one who is familiar with this magic and the harm it can cause. I will try over the next few days to determine what it's purpose is. I will take certain precautions.

"I reckon they attacked because they are evil beasts and we are heroes. And maybe they were encouraged by our foes, but they also attacked that other ship, so it's not just us. We know there is a bigger plot afoot, what with the cryptic warnings from Aaroth and others, but it's still not clear to me what is going on."

Something was making them feral and sick. they didn't seem right. I doubt we were specifically targeted, more that they were driven mad and lashed out at whoever came near them. but we know very little right now. Now, if you'll excuse me...

Elyas finds a bunk and lays down, very tired from multiple combats, and the lengthy discussion about what to do with the new pendant. his dreams are full of tentacles...

"I should add, at the risk of further mockery by my fellows, does anyone have more healing available before we go to sleep?"

Kiwina offers to treat deadly wounds for Rolth, but tonight he can't focus on healing. It's like he's not even able to clean a wound.

"We're not sure yet what was going on, Ramsey. Something may have stirred them up."

"Oh I am sorry Rolth, we got so caught up in the discussion and filling holes I forgot to finish the healing."

Falco motions Rolth, Kiwina and any other injured over has he calls on the warper-sar to channel his energies. {Channnel: 10/6/7}

’As did I, dear Falco, no need to apologize! Thank you for sharing the power of the warper-war with us, that we might succeed in our quest.’

Rolth mentions his ideas abouts the Harpies and asks for help.

Elyas tries to rest.

Kiwina explains their lack of information.

Falco offers to help Rolth

Ramsay nods.

"I understand, get some rest, we'll set sail, we've only got a couple of hours of light left, but it may be worth you getting an early night. We should be at Chessford in a couple of days.

The next few days pass relatively smoothly, the journey is quiet and sunny, enough that you can all relax and recuperate. As you approach the city, you see it coming up on the horizon, it's buildings sprawling out from the port, getting less and less affluent as they stretch away from the centre. It's mid morning when you arrive in port, and Ramsay gets to making sure the ship is resupplied and full and complete repairs are sorted, giving you time to get started on your plans.

"How did we decide to approach this -- get the lay of the land before making our mission known?" But there is other pressing business as well. "I suppose we should also see Hess off and hope he can find work to get him back to Aisildur." He does not mention the nature of their mission in front of Hess, although that does not mean it won't become known if the crew talk.

Each morning Elyas wakes up, casts "protection from evil" on himself and attempts to identify the magic of the tentacle amulet.

high roll on spellcraft on day 2: 25.

If he is unable to identify it, he will once again raise the idea of just chucking the thing overboard with the captain before they reach land. Elyas is much more concerned about this falling into someone's hands on land than someone dredging it up from the bottom of the sea.

"Yes, Captain, we had three lines of action to begin. Ramsay plans to visit Amaretto to see what news she has, and of course to enjoy each other’s company. Elyas, Angus, and Mak were to head to the market and similar locals, so see what the common folk are saying. The rest of us were going to visit the Coalborns to see what insights they might have about local events and politics. No skulking around or lying about our mission, but not advertising it widely just yet. Perhaps we can all meet up at the Wanderer’s Roost in a few hours to compare notes?"

(OOC: for a refresher, check out the archive from about 29 Feb - 5 March. Mak had some info re the clans, and Rolth summed up the details were learned from the Duke’s people.)

Also, during the trip here, were we able to learn the activation word for the folding boat? With Elyas’ +10, several of us aiding another, and inspire competence, even a DC 30 isn’t that hard.
