DM Dan - A series of Unfortunate Events.
Monday January 6th, 2020 7:25:22 PM

After the few days of rest and respite a messenger comes to your door.

"The Duke will see you now, however I should warn you, he's not in the best of moods. When you're ready, make your way to his keep and you will be sent to his chambers as long as you present this."

He hands one of you a letter sealed with the Duke's Seal.

"This is the invitation to a private audience. Good luck."

Do you have any last minute preparations to do before you head to see the Duke?

Angus washes up as best he can, wearing his unused and clean change of clothes. He pulls his tunic down to make sure it covers his new belt (no need for anyone to see it)

Rolth will use prestidigitation to clean up himself and his gear, put on his red suit, comb out his mane, and set his cap at a jaunty angle. He'll double check that his lute is tuned up, in case his skills are called for when we call upon the Duke.

He looks at the sealed letter and tries to remember whether one is supposed to open the letter in advance or present it upon arrival.

Tsak spends time cleaning and polishing his armour.
He also has his clothes washed and mended where necessary whilst in town.

After this he invites Mak to take a tour of the alehouses, it would be a shame to leave not knowing which is best!
As he investigates he finds a baths that offer medicinal body rubs to soothe aching muscles.
After an hour of this he comes out feeling pummelled, but blissful and relaxed.

When the messenger arrives he feels as ready as he will ever be.

Kiwina uses the days before the message comes to heal, train at the WLA, and place an order in the Catacombs. Until the order comes, he travels without armor or his usual weapons, but he does carry a wooden rod.

For the meeting with the Duke, he cleans up and dresses in a well-maintained but not a fancy outfit.

Suprised by the invitation Falco makes a mental list of what he needs to do. Really it comes down to a little shopping before the meeting with the Duke. Still the invitation has him concerned and he shares his misgivings with the Petals.

"Our dealings with the Horned Skull did not go well. I wonder if that is the source of his mood? We should be prepared for some fallout I think."

It has been a few days, I am sure that word of the results of our "assistance" have gotten back to the Duke by now. Hopefully we can salvage our relationship with the Duke, I'm sure we will need those connections later

Elyas will as usual let the more diplomatic folk take the lead on speaking unless he needs to give input

((Rolth knows to keep the letter an present it to the guards, who will take you to the Duke once you present the letter))

You head over to the Duke's keep, scrubbing up as best you can (for the most part). As you arrive you are greeted by guards, in their normal uniform, and are stopped by one at the gate.

"Invitation?" he asks gruffly, and you hand over the letter, which he takes, and opens. After reading it through quickly he gives a whistle.

"Oh boy. This should be fun for you. Follow me."

He leads you through the keep until you come to the grand audience chamber, it is currently empty, save for a couple of guards who are apparently here to protect the Duke.

"Wait here until the Duke comes to speak to you."

Duke Purple (Cayzle)
Tuesday January 7th, 2020 5:26:04 PM

You stand in the grand audience hall, which is also the feasting hall that some of you have seen before. The marvelous dome of glass windows is overhead, but the many tables have been all placed against the walls, benches under them, and the floor under the dome is marble with purple veins, swept clean, empty.

The ducal chair is in its usual spot at the head of the chamber, flanked by the guards who were there when you entered. They stand at attention, minotaurs clad in plate with helms closed. You wait ... a minute ... ten ... thirty.

The Purple Duke enters from a small entry behind his chair. He is as you recall him, those who have met him. He is big, resplendent in his velvet robes, clearly a man who enjoys the pleasures of life, with obvious laugh lines around his eyes.

He is not laughing.

He sits and waves you closer.

"Boys, boys," he growls. "A fine bottle of sour wine you've opened for me. Tell me, eight-petaled rose, the story of what went down in Greenfell. I know you investigated these murders, found the criminal, and killed him. The brother of the local constable, and now a martyr for the Horned Society to rally around. How did you get into this fix?"

Mak had only limited contact with this level of nobility and no experience with the man personally, so he stood in the back and waited on the senior members of the group to speak. While he did so his eyes wandered about the room and tried to fix on anything that wasn’t the imposing duke before him.

Sir, you are well informed and what you say is correct. We started on the back foot when our contact, Yesia, was murdered before we arrived. From that point we were unable to make a break thru with the Minotaurs who are deeply distrustful, particularly concerning their fractious relationship with the Liontaurs. Thus we tried to keep things simple and deal only with the problem of the murder, but unfortunately the person responsible would not submit to your justice and chose suicide by attacking us ferociously whilst inciting others to do the same. A societal change is required at Grenfell. It will not happen quickly and is probably better achieved with a more subtle approach.

Having used up every word he knows and then some, Tsak lapses into silence.

"My Lord, it is as my good companion Tsak has said. We had hoped to minimize the killing, but in the end failed to do so. I confess that it was quite intimidating to be confronted by more than twice our number, and all of them minotaurs! When they charged us, they almost succeeding in taking down Kiwina and myself in the initial assault, which as you perceive would have left the less rugged of the Petals to face their fury unprotected. I deeply regret that I failed to stick to the plan at that point, and struck down their leader. It is my fondest hope that the taurs be brought closer together, and yet in this I have failed myself, you, and all taurs. I hope that there is some way that I, and we, can undo some of this harm, and get all of our peoples back onto the right footing. May Domi make it so. Do you have any wisdom to impart, that we might learn from our mistakes? And moreover, any opportunity to make up for our quest going awry?"

Kiwina lets the others answer first. He recalls facing off against three minotaurs in the fight, and probably would not have survived if Rasheel had been able to urge his syncophants on after the initial skirmish. Still, their plan had been to take Rasheel alive, and the Duke was left with the consequences of their failure. Worse, they had broken a promise to Ranter, and he had treated them decently.

When the others have spoken, Kiwina adds, quietly but firmly, "We are sorry that Rasheel may be a martyr now, because it may make your position more difficult and because his death pains his brother. But recognize that he claimed not to fall under your authority and expected to continue to get away with murder because of his relationship with his brother. Our actions were unfortunate, but not unwarranted."

Elyas stays silent unless specifically called on by either the Duke or his own Captain. he thinks about what he could say, but nothing seems to make the situation sound any better. he still blames himself in large part for what happened. if he hadn't been so jumpy to try to control the battlefield with his web spell, maybe the fight wouldn't have broken out so quickly and so violently. he can still clearly see the image of the very dead Rasheel hanging limp in a sheet of magical web...

Duke Purple listens and ponders.

"That meshes with what I heard, close enough. And gods know I've been in battle situations where things don't go according to plan." He nods to Kiwina and Rolth, and any others in whom he senses remorse. "I appreciate that sometimes it goes hard, and you feel that."

"I sense that you've played this straight with me," he says. "And I can't even say I wouldn't do the same were I in your spot. But the truth of it is that though the villain is finished, the business of it, the politics of it, are not done, not by a long shot."

The expression on Duke Purple's face when he says "politics" tells you what he thinks of that, and it is nothing good.

"But I'm in a pickle, right enough. The only folk you've managed to please are the liontaurs. Word is going to get out about it, too. Hmmm ..."

He pauses in thought.

"Actually, maybe I can use that. I've been meaning to send an envoy to Chessford, to a couple of the big trading clans. The Sandifurrs, maybe ... "

"Okay, boys, you can help me set the politics of this to rights, and we'll be square. Just stay here in the castle with me for a few days, keeping undercover. I'll put out the word that I am very very angry with you and that you are in the dungeons. That'll fix one part of this for me. Then I declare an amnesty, which I was planning to do anyway, for the big celebration coming up. You Petals skeedaddle off to Liontaur Island, deliver my messages, and we're square."

"Oh, and, uh, let things cool down before you come back to this neck of the woods, if you know what I'm saying."

"Do we have a plan? How's that sit with you?"

"It sounds as if we are most fortunate." Kiwina says. In an aside for the Petals closest to him he adds, "I am not a politician, but it seems odd to me that the minotaurs would accept us becoming their emissaries. Although I would understand if we were commanded to carry an emissary and his armed escort on the Rose that would also ensure we left this island."

He is a bit sad, though -- if they are to "be in the dungeons" then there is little chance of seeing Cassia.

Mak was not unfamiliar with political machinations and disinformation. His own home country was a prime example of how far the leadership would go to keep the truth from the people. In this case even though they struck first he thought that a physical confrontation was inevitable and the result unavoidable. He was also relieved that his own role in the death of Ranter had been minimized as he knew it was his arrows that brought the dissident down. So at the duke's proclamation that they'd be spending time in the "dungeon" Mak merely nodded in acceptance of the punishment.

Elyas knows things could have been worse, but is not looking forward to another diplomatic mission. so far those have not been the best suited to this crew. but if the Duke wanted that for reparations from the last debacle, it sounds fair enough.

"Yes, as Falco says we found something disturbing on the way back. we were attacked by goblins who followed a creature known as 'the ghost'. we tracked their lair and found a disturbing place filled with undead and stitched-together monsters made from tentacles. we got into a showdown with this Ghost but after injuring several of us he escaped. he is still somewhere on this island making threats about the end of the world. if you don't send us to deal with it, please at least send some soldiers out to clear out the caves and search for where the ghost escaped to."

"And I appreciate your report, excellent Elyas," I will have my people look into this immediately. There are always goblins and such nuisances about, but I do not brook the undead."

He bids you farewell, and motions to his guard.

The guards guide you down deeper into the keep in silence, once you approach a locked door, they knock, a panel in it slides open and some eyes stare out at you for a moment before it sweeps shot and you hear the tell tale click and slide of locks and bars being opened. The door itself swings open and in front of you stands a small(ish) Minotaur, who waves you in,

“Please place all your weapons and belongings in the boxes provided, and all your clothes save your skivvies.” As you undress and pass all your belongings the guards and the apparent jailer whisper amongsr themselves, before the jailer nods and puts all your belongings in a strong room behind him.

He comes back to where you are and takes you to a strong panelled wooden door with iron banding all over it to support and brace it, and several different locks on the side your on, it is on the opposite wall from where you entered. The jailer opens the locks with practiced ease and smoothness before guiding you in to a cell each, all nearby this door. However each cell is well furnished and has a supply of decent (though not excellent) quality wine, and books, the beds are feather beds, not straw and there are some nice, if slightly ill-fitting clothing for your to wear.

He puts you all in a cell and closes the iron bars behind you, then, once you are all locked up separately [but close enough to talk) he heads back through and locks the door to the jailer’s area.

Highlight to display spoiler: {With a nod to Folsom Prison Blues by Johnny Cash}

I see the Rose a comin'
It's sailin' 'round the bay,
And I ain't seen the sunshine
Since, don't know what day
I'm stuck in Minotaur Prison
And time keeps draggin' on
But that ship keeps a-sailin'
On down to Liontaur home
When I was just a baby
My Mama told me, "Son
Always be a good boy
Don't ever fight for fun,
But I killed a man in Greenfell
Had to watch him die
When I hear that Duke scoldin'
I hang my head and sigh
I bet there's good folks eatin'
In a fancy dining room
They're probably drinkin' klava
And smokin' big cigars
But I know I had it comin'
I know I can't be free
But those Skulls keep a-movin'
And that's what tortures me
Well, if they freed me from this prison
An emissary for a while
I bet I'd sail out over a little
Farther down cross the Isles
Far from Minotaur Prison
That's where I want to stay
And I'd let that bosun's whistle
Blow my blues away

After a night and a day of boredom and only each other for conversations and a few books in each cell, the cold dampness beginning to permeate everything, you see a familiar silhouette enter in to the hallway outside your cells, and you immediately recognise it as the Jester you saw at court before, she comes over and whispers to you, all secretive.

"I have been sent by my lord to talk to you about who you will be looking to discuss things with. The Sandifurrs is one Clan you need to talk with, another is the Longclaws, and finally the Goldmane's, but really you will need to take his sealed proposal to the Council of the Clans... only they together can make the decision, I would suggest mayhaps scoping the political position out and maybe getting close to the clans with the most power right?"

The Jester, apparently happy they've completed their task. Smiles slightly oddly at you all before heading off, allowing you no time to ask questions, and no time to discuss anything with her.

"This duke has already proven his fickle nature. We are poor diplomats once so send us to do the same thing again. It is almost as if he wants to make things worse."

Mak understood Falco's concerns, but thought to add. "The Duke asked us to help Gadin investigate murders. That it would become political was unknown at the time. I suspect that he's sending us because of Rolth's reputation in the hopes that one as accomplished as he will have more influence than a stranger. Still, the prospect of another diplomatic mission does not thrill me either."

Mak rubbed at a freshly healed wound on his arm and the thin pink line that had formed there. He pressed on it on and off as he felt the tale tell pins and needles that told him there was some nerve damage there and that it would take a while before the scar faded.

"I've never been there. What's it like?" Asked Mak once the conversation lulled.

Again I agree with Falco. why exactly do we seem like a good choice to send as diplomats? we didn't do so good at that with either Aaroth or Rasheel. seems like he would have been better off sending us after the Ghost and some trained diplomats to handle this clan situation.

Mak listened to Elyas and thought to add. "He's getting rid of us because he thinks our continued presence on the island will be troublesome to him." Mak replied.

"Frankly, I'm inclined to agree that we shouldn't be here in case this liontaur/minotaur strife causes some kind of civil war. It's happened before." Mak finished as he thought about his own home and the wars there.

Rolth - Highlight to display spoiler: {You get nothing!}

Kiwina - Highlight to display spoiler: {While you suspect the jester is adept at lying and/or obfuscating her true words, you get the sense she's telling you right and true.}

During the next day, the guards come to collect you, and you are lead back into the antechamber where the jailer stays, and he provides you with your belongings, a small smile on his face. As you get dressed, one of the guards speaks.

"You can't bring your weapons in at the moment, if you leave them here, we'll return them to you when you leave to go to wherever it is ya going."

Once you are all dressed again, in your semi-finery you were wearing for your meeting with the Duke, the guards lead you back down the halls, but this time to a different room, and they make you wait outside. You can hear a voice on the other side

DC 15 Perception to read - Highlight to display spoiler: {You hear the Duke saying, "And in honour of this great feast, and celebration, I am granting Clemency to the Adventurers known as the Eight Petalled Rose!"}

After the voice stops talking, the guards swing open the door and gesture you through, whereupon you come into what appears to be a great party and much revelry, the Duke looking at you with a soft, smile that seems to indicate he's very happy with himself, and you are surrounded by nobles and sycophants and all of those who would want to be near the Duke who look at you earnestly, as if expecting something from you.

The pause goes on for a few moments before you hear a voice from the back call out "Speech! Speech from the Petals!!" and in short order most of the room, save the Duke, who has a small smile on his face, and you can see him having a good-natured laugh at your expense, before settling the crowd down, and then he gestures to your group.

With a bow, Rolth steps to the fore, "Your Grace, your generosity is only exceeded by your compassion and honor. If I understand it correctly, you have granted us, the Eight Petaled Rose, clemency for our role in the recent unfortunate events that led to the removal of a threat, but in an unwelcome way. As you have done us this service, might there be a service that we in turn might provide? Either here or across the Taur Isles, as we are not afraid to undertake a journey, a mission, a quest even. What is your bidding?"

Meanwhile, he sees who is in the crowd -- although he's probably not going to recognize individuals, he tries to get a feel for the groups. (Sense motive = 20, 16 for non-taurs) He also tries to figure of what's being celebrated.

You all find all your equipment intact, nothing is missing.

"Well friends, let us not speak of the past, I would send you to treat with Council of Clans, the Liontaurs, as your recent... efforts will have endeared you to them somewhat."

He smiles.

"But we can discuss that another time, enjoy the feast in Celebration of the Changes in the Divine within our world. Eat, drink, and be merry!"

He then allows you to work your way around the party as much or as little as you want, there is a large buffet table with plenty of food on it, and another long table with drinks on it, all being attended by servants, the proceeding itself is remarkably lavish and enjoyable.

Most of the groups are broken down in to Taur types, so Minotaurs, Liontaurs and Centaurs, though there are precious few Liontaurs and Centaurs. There is the odd smattering of other races as well, and they are mostly keeping to themselves in their own group.

Kiwina mingles with the various races, willing to answer questions if any have heard of the groups exploits but preferring to shy away from events in Greenfell. He does not seek out the centaurs, who he expects to be from Centaur Island -- where, let's face it, centaurs can be a bit snobbish. If he finds a delegation from Bridge Island, he is quite friendly, and freely expresses his gratitude for the Duke's past help. He treats halflings and gnomes, if any, with awe and particular respect. He is more than willing to discuss the problem of giants with dwarves. Most of his time, though, goes to any ships' crew or captains, whether merchant or military. He does not steer conversations with a particular purpose, being more interested in swapping tales of foreign lands.

One thing Kiwina does, is discretely ask a head waiter to find him if one of his travelling companions becomes a nuisance at the long table. He does not try to watch the table himself.

I am not afraid, but we don't need to do anything more to unsettle inter-taur relations, I think. That is why I propose returning to the Rose. And as Elyas has said, it would be good to check in with Ramsey and the crew.

Kiwina thanks the Duke for his hospitality and his offer, but he is most comfortable sleeping on his vessel. He tries to get the formalities right while doing so (diplomacy = 15).

To the other Petals, he says he agrees with Rolth and Elyas -- they should get to the Rose. And although there was no trouble here tonight at the Duke's party, he feels there is still some tension in the air. People were polite to him, and only polite. Whatever they actually think about the group, good or bad, was left unsaid. Kiwina thinks the Petals should be prepared to defend the Rose against a possible attack -- meaning standing watches tonight even though they're in port, but also inspecting the ship in the morning before leaving port. If the Duke were ready to give them the letter now and if the tide were right, he would even suggest they take her away from the dock tonight.

You all sleep soundly on the Rose and are not bothered at all. However, once morning comes, you are visited by Falad Hearthkin, the Duke's chief aide. He begs audience with you all, and you instantly recognise him as being with the Duke in the past.

"Good morning to you, the Eight Petalled Rose, I have been sent by the Duke, to ensure you get off well and provide you with some supplies to get you started."

He opens a chest he has brought with him, and in there is a set of Emissary's Clothing for each of you ((OoC: Courtiers Clothing)) that fits well enough for purpose. Also contained within is a sack of gold, with enough in it to cover supplies to Chessford where you are heading.

"Please take this as a gesture of appreciation, and thanks from the Duke for your continued service."

He smiles.

"I would suggest you go and purchase supplies with this before casting off. But before you start, do you have any questions for me?"

Angus will defer to the more diplomatic members of the party. That said, Angus asks if anything can be done by the Duke to help their reputations in town.

Also, having more gold than he ever imagined as a street urchin, Angus asks if there is someplace, some one who is helping the down trodden, the homeless, and the hungry. Angus would like to donate some of his gold to them.

Rolth is quite pleased with this elegant, civilized Emissary's clothing, and asks Falad to convey his appreciation. And the gold to outfit the ship is also most welcome. He will suggest to Captain Kiwina that we make sure to have more than enough food and drink on board for the journey, just in case we are blown off course or otherwise find misadventure.

Rolth does have some additional questions for Falad. "Thank you for offering to answer some questions. Do you know more about the three clans that we will be engaging? Do they have particular interests, foibles, enmities, or other characteristics that we can turn to our advantage or should avoid? Also, are there already any alliances or ties between them that might guide our diplomacy? For the Council, how are its decisions reached? Is it majority, consensus, unanimity, or something else? Who actually votes or decides, and how do they break any ties or resolve any uncertain outcome? Finally, do you have any other agents or emissaries among them, that we might cooperate with or at least deconflict our efforts?

Tsak eyes all the crew that the Petals have taken on over their adventures Yes, we're going to need some supplies before we put to sea. Also crew payments will need to be taken care of.

Tsak is happy to travel into town and arrange for some bulk food stuffs to be delivered to the Rose: flour, vegetables, spices, salted meats and the like. He'll also look to purchase a heavy blanket to serve as a bed for Esmerelda and is happy to pay for this out of his own coin (OOC 5sp deducted from char sheet).

To Falad: I never really imagined being part of the diplomatic corps. Do you have any news from Chessford? Any previous dealings with the clans there? And, most importantly, do I really have to wear this hat? Tsak does his best to get a read of the man without starting an inquisition (which the man obviously isn't expecting)

If the message is not in the chest, he asks Falad if they should wear their new uniforms when they go to pick it up.

Kiwina seems a bit amused at Rolth's suggestion that they take on more than enough for the journey. "Before we left for Greenfell, Ramsey was going to stock up. That feels like half a year ago, now. I'm sure it's needed again. And he's probably chased off the stowaways, too."

Elyas - Highlight to display spoiler: {It appears all is well with the ship, it is in good repair.}

Falad looks to both Rolth and Falco.

"Well Rolth, the three clans that have been mentioned would be a good start yes. They are the three we feel have the most power to wield and will be receptive to our requests to establish a Minotaur Settlement on Liontaur Isle. Unfortunately I don't know much about them, or how they make their decisions, you may have to see what you can find out once you get there. As far as I understand it there are an odd number of votes, so there cannot be ties. As for more agents, we are sending you. We have had minimal dealings with them in the past, and no Mr Ambersier, you don't have to wear that hat."

Falad smiles to you all, and wishes you good luck as he heads off to get supplies.

As you are moving through the town to gather supplies you see two minotaur guards dragging along a rather pathetic and downtrodden looking human, who once he spots you calls out to you.

"Noble adventurers! Worthy adventurers! Friends and fellows of the Noble races! Please! Save me!"

He is a middle aged man wearing religious robes of some sort and he is also wearing this symbol.

He has a dripping nose and looks somewhat ill, he has been wiping his nose on his sleeve and you can see both dried and fresh snot on his once clean robes.

"I'm innocent! I have done nothing wrong! Please noble fellows! Don't let them take me away!!"

You, who have done nothing but bring pestilence to noble and taur races alike. And maybe even had something to do with the disease of the blood curse that so recently afflicted the Wold. Innocent? Done no wrong? I think not. You'll need a better argument before I would lift a finger to aid you." Barring some surprising revelation, Rolth is clearly not inclined to intercede.

The Priest plays with all of you, and each and everyone of you manages to win a Prize! The priest smiles warmly.

"Congratulations friends! It warms my heart to see winners here are your prizes."

To Rolth, he gives some particularly nice and fancy clothes, making you seem at home in noble courts.

To Kiwina he gives you a Masterwork Lute

To Elyas he gives a Oil of Bless Weapon

To Falco he gives a Heatstone.

"Well done friends, I do hope you like what you won, and I hope they will come in useful to you."

Once you have finished your games and head on your way, you see crossing the roads in front of you, a young Minotaur Priestess, shepherding (as best she can) a group of young people. She herself can't be many summers older than her charges.

There are seven children, six Minotaurs, and one Half Orc, the youngest is but a babe in swaddling clothes, being carried by the one who looks the eldest, bar the Priestess herself. The eldest looking one comes up to the Petals and speaks.

"The lady in our dream said she would lead us to a people who would help us? Is that you? Can you help us?"

The out-of-her-depth Priestess tells you that she herself dreamed of Serenbeth, and that "The goddess says that with your help we can build a nice place for us all to live until we find new families for these kids! Will you help us?"

What do the Petals do?

Mak was suspicious of the gifts. They seemed out of proportion to the wagers placed and only served to bolster his suspicions about religion. He knew all too well how evil in the name of religion could insinuate itself into the lives of people and take them unaware when they were ill prepared to defend themselves.

No, he would rely upon himself and the more mundane or familiar healing magic from trusted friends such as Falco. That diminutive person who claimed to represent the warper sar had asked nothing of him other than friendship and as such his religion meant nothing to Mak. There was also a sense of comfort in the fact that Mak felt Falco would be too small to force a heartseed upon him.

While Mak stood watching the crowd his hand brushed against a new object at his waist. For those used to seeing Mak with his worn and beaten shortsword the item was quite spectacular. There on Mak's left hip was a splendid rapier with a black basket hilt that looked like it was formed to represent intertwining vines that came together at it's center to wrap around a blood red stone shaped like a heart. The vines and gem were crafted so that it looked as if the heart was being squeezed by their thorny grasp. The scabbard itself was also black and finely made but unlike the sword made simply with leather and silver. Mak slid the sword out a few inches to loosen it in it's holder and those watching could see that the blade was also black and without blemish with a hint of magic script along the portion that was visible.

Mak slid the sword back into it's sheath and blended into the crowd...

We wouldn't be capable of farming the land or working it in any meaningful way, we would simply end up waiting to die..."

She smiles sadly.
