"Speaking to Ranter would be a good idea... I agree if you can get him on side it will extend some more locally rooted legitimacy to yourselves as investigators. Ranter is a good man... sometimes a little misguided, but he genuinely wants what is best for Greenfell... he is also a man very loyal to his family... and wants what is best for them."
Gadin leads you to the closest thing a town this size has to a constabulary, a building with a few cells and fairly small barracks. The guards allow you in, and you can see sitting behind a desk looking exasperated is a Minotaur with a friendly smile, despite his rather stressed appearance.

Rolth greets Ranter warmly, "It is good to see you again so soon. I'm afraid that we have mixed results to report. Lotan was every bit as difficult to deal with as you warned us about. That said, we still managed to learn a few things. His wife and daughter seemed to know something about Yesia's murder that night, but were unwilling to speak of it, at least in front of him. He, too, seemed to have knowledge about that night, but would not share it without being bested in Kayleb. I regret to say that he is more mighty than our champion of the day, so he dismissed us harshly. But not before we noted that he had some injuries sustained before we got there. I cannot say whether they occurred during Yesia's killing, nor whether he was attacking or aiding her. I would guess the latter, because he does seem concerned that if he cooperates with the investigation, that his family might come to harm. Do you have any ideas about how to get him to come clean about events that night, while still protecting his family? If nothing else, many will have witnessed how he sent us away in anger and unsatisfied with his answers, so perhaps a more private conversation would allow him to say more? It could even be that our unintentionally rude behavior was created an opportunity, since now no one will suspect him of cooperating with us."

When Angus misses the cue from Rolth to share the note, Elyas steps in as smoothly as possible. As Rolth says, we found some interesting information in Yesia's house. she was recording information about a series of deaths that were not shown in the proper register, and flagged it as suspicious that none of the mysterious deaths were minotaurs. we alos found this:

It is a letter from Yesia to you, Captain. It what we found in her notes, that someone has been erasing the suspicious deaths of various Liontaur and Centaurs from the Registry. It appears to be a cover up to prevent the deaths being further investigated, and she wanted to discuss it with you. she mentions your brother Rasheel, and states that he had been harassing her. do you know anything of their interactions? she was clearly afraid of either him or someone else, because she chose to burn this letter rather than deliver it to you

Ranter greets you each in turn, with a smile and a nod, and listens to your words an questions.
"Yes, I'm sorry about Lotan... he is a traditionalist and believes that our ways of Kayleb are still important. To be fair to him, most of the Minotaurs here do, myself included, but he can be a little overzealous in protecting his family. I agree that he's afraid that his family will be targeted next. I will see if I can arrange a more... private conversation with him where you can question him without fear of him avoiding talking to you."
When he hears about the letter, he sits down, and reads it, his head in one hand, he glances up at all of you as he does.

After you answer he nods.
"Well... it saddens me to think this has happened... Rasheel... is..."
He sighs, as if trying to find the words.
"A staunch traditionalist, he dislikes many non Minotaur Taur, and if she was investigating suspicious activity around the deaths of Centaurs and Liontaurs, he may very well have tried to warn her off... perhaps he told her that they weren't worth looking in to...?"
The last sentence definitely comes out more as a question than a statement, and he closes his eyes for a moment, before opening them, and you see there is steel in there.
"As of this moment, you have done more to investigate this death and help get justice than anyone else, myself included. That is going to change. I will ensure you get a chance to speak to Lotan, with just myself and yourselves present, so he needn't fear and can be honest with you. Is there any further help you need?"
Angus feels that Rasheel might have answers to some of their questions, or at least give direction to their next steps...

Rolth thanks Ranter for any information that he can provide, and suggests one of two course of action: we return to talk to Shelian to see if he knows of anyone who appeared with wounds after Yesia fought back against her killers, or we go search Juran's place for clues about who he might be rabblerousing for.

Your brother had some sort of disagreement with Yesia. it may have been as simple as him warning her off. it puts a bad light on him to know that he is outspoken against the very people who have been dying and removed from record while also being named in a note from the murdered woman. I want to believe that he is not the guilty party, but to fully believe that we should give him a chance to explain himself, and tell us what the disagreements with Yesia were. if he was warning her of danger, he might know who attacked her
We maybe don't want to intimidate him by all going to see him at once. perhaps you could talk to him privately? one or more of us can join you if you think it prudent, or we can just meet back later once you have a moment with him

Mak listened to what was said and offered up his own opinions here and there. Mostly they were related the horned skull and motivations. (See investigation file) While Gadin was present he didn't discuss that Minotaur's involvement, but once they were alone Mak added. "We need to find out who sent Gadin to get us. Was it really Yesia? and if so would he have had the authority to tell her no? He might have come to get us simply because he was ordered to do so and intentionally delayed our return to allow for Yesia to be silenced."
Mak still wasn't convinced of Gadin's non involvement due to his unavailability during critical times these past few days. He still kept a watch for evesdroppers.

Ranter listens to the other questions and answers them in turn.
"The Horned Skull has several members in our little village... they usually don't reveal themselves to one another... I do have my suspicions about Rasheel... but he's my brother... I cannot believe he'd be caught up in this, however the letter coupled with his possible involvement means that it may be him behind it..."
He looks terribly sad.
"I didn't think it would come to this... I had always suspected Rasheel was... rough... but I never expected he would want to do this."
He looks for a moment like he will break down, before steeling himself.
"What do you plan on doing next? Would you like me to get Lotan again for you to speak to, or would you prefer to attempt something else?"

Barring any objections, Rolth leads the group on a three step course. First, to examine Juran and see whether he is sporting any wounds that can be traced back to Yesia's murder. "Can someone with medical skills offer an opinion?" Then proceeding to visit Shelian again, and ask him whether he has treated any such wounds. Finally arriving at Juran's place, which hopefully won't be surrounded by too many hostile liontaurs, who ought to be out working during the day, with any luck.

At the temple, Kiwina will let the others do the talking. He will observe Shelian during the conversation (sense motive = 16), more to feel useful than out of any doubt.
At Juran's place, he's more interested in learning why Juran is here than investigating, and will remain outside to strike up a conversation if any liontaurs are around and seem interested in what the Petals are doing.

As long as some plan is in place to get more info about the person who's name was written in a letter from the dead woman, Elyas will follow the lead of the group.
to Mak separately , Elyas asks what kind of evidence do you have in mind to show Gadin? He does seem to be hindering this investigation more than he is helping it, but i don't know that it has been enough to make me suspect him. I think he may just not be very good at this investigation stuff.
speaking of Gadin... Elyas looks around for him. He has been awfully quiet during the planning of next steps, despite Elyas doing everything he can to give space for Gadin to chime in to help them avoid any political pitfalls.

Mak looks sidelong at Elyas. "Gadin? He's either too steeped in the local traditions and afraid to buck the trend, or he's an unwilling participant and only going through the motions with this investigation. I am unconvinced about his commitment to the investigation as he seems more concerned about the status quo than discovering what's happening here. Recall that our original task wasn't to find Yesia's murderer. If it were up to me I'd disband the Horned Skull as I see them only an impediment to progress here on the island. Unfortunately I'm not taur and an outsider. Change here is going to have to come from within, and neither Kiwina, Rolth, or Gadin seem interested in effecting that change, but doing that isn't going to be easy or quick.

As you leave the building Gadin comes up to you.
"You did well in there! You listened to what he had to say... it seems perhaps you took my advice after all. When you go and speak to Juran I would make a point to mention you have Ranter on side, and that could impact his stay in the cells. You could perhaps intimate that you could help him get free earlier if you have any questions to ask him, then it would be up to you if you would want to keep any implied promises. I would suggest you strategise before speaking with Juran, so you know what sort of tack to take with him. It would also be prudent to remember he's possibly a member of the Horned Skull... so anything you reveal to him may get back to that organisation."

Tsak is a bit taken aback by Gadin's warning. He had assumed that all the members of the Horned Skull would be Minotaurs, as the group seems to be all about segregation. Mak's concerns regarding Gadin's political allegiance hits home with a thud as he realizes that they really don't know who they can trust.
I think we need to think before we barge in. Gadin do you think that Juran will be as open with us if you are there?

Do you mean one of his jailers?" Kiwina seems a bit skeptical, but shrugs that off. Why worry about whether the person checking is neutral, just so long as they don't add any injuries themselves.
Although Kiwina doesn't think Juran is particularly intersted in a peaceful resolution, he sees merit in Rolth's approach. But like Tsak, he's surprisef to hear Gadin say Juran might be a Horned Skull -- Liontaurs don't have horns; the group sounds like it should be all minotaurs. But perhaps they have managed to pay or dupe Juran into helping them out.

"My mistake... I think Juran is just someone reacting to the pressure from the Horned Skull... this whole problem is getting me all turned round. I don't think Juran will be very open if I'm there. I doubt he likes me. I would suggest showing overwhelming force, and show that Ranter trusts you, as that may concern him. Up until now your greatest weakness as investigators is no one trusts you. Word that Ranter trusts you may help to change that."
He looks to Elyas.
"I'm sure Ranter would let you listen, but Juran may be scared if those who helped get him arrested turn up asking more questions, I think that may unsettle him, especially if you have Ranter's blessing. But it is up to you. Does anyone else wish to join Elyas?"

Rolth volunteers to lead a small group to talk to Juran, hoping that as a liontaur, he will have some bond to start with despite recent circumstances. That, plus Ranter's backing, may be enough to prompt some cooperation, especially if he plays the good cop role. He'll open with some empathy for Juran's plight, and try to steer the conversation around to learning some facts that we might use to bring to light actual crimes by minotaurs or others that Ranter can then deal with officially.
"Cousin Juran, I'm sorry for the way that things have turned out. We seek to establish more equitable treatment for all taurs here. I think the best way to do that is identify those who are behind the violent confrontations. Then Ranter, who entrusted us with this discussion, can deal with the miscreants so that the rest of us can talk things out peacefully. You've been on the front lines during all these tensions. Are there specific minotaurs who seem to instigate or be involved in violent confrontations? Do you know anything about the Horned Skulls, including who their leaders are? Can you identify any who have been posting flyers? Most sensitively, are there any among the liontaurs who might have an interest (financial or otherwise) in keeping things tense between the different taur races here,and might even be cooperating with the worst of the minotaurs?"

For mostly the same reasons as Kiwina, Mak accompanied Rolth as well. Once they were in there Mak crossed his arms and leaned against the wall, alert, and listening for trouble. "So Rasheel... I assume you heard what happened? With Yesia?" Rasheel says nothing, but merely nods. "Tell me about the altercation you had with her last week she seemed to be afraid of you?"
Rasheel chuckles derisively. "She was afraid of everything, and not a true Minotaur. She didn't care about the race! She came up to me and started accusing me of all sorts of crimes, everything under the sun! Theft, murder, burglary, all sorts, all of which I'm innocent of. So I can't say I'll miss her."
Ranter simple looks at you to see if you want to jump in, and if not, he will continue.}

"For the most part people have the good sense not to mention run-ins with them... if they have run ins. I don't think the Horned Skulls talk to people outside their group... certainly not about their affiliations... but I wouldn't put it past several high ranking minotaurs to be involved. Rolth deals with Juran's last question first. "Look, we've had a pretty frank discussion with Ranter, and I doubt he is a Horned Skull. Seems to me that he is caught in the middle, trying to keep the peace between conservative-thinking but decent minotaurs, unnecessarily violent minotaurs--probably including the Horned Skulls, quiescent newcomers, and vocal newcomers who want progress to happen a little more quickly than the locals are comfortable (ahem). You got arrested because you threatened that delicate balance, and it probably saved your life. I have to think that the Horned Skulls would not take kindly to an outsider who resorted to violence against their own kind, and even those on the fence would be easily swayed by the argument that you had attacked guardsmen. I understand the impulse, but I think there is something more subtle and nefarious at work here, and we outlanders need to be clever if we are going to unravel it. I like a nice, straightforward charge as much or more than other liontaurs, but isn't the right time for it. We need to gain allies and gather information if we are not to be driven away by the locals. Now, has anything else come to mind that might aid us in this investigation? Maybe about helpful minotuars, the missing or slain liontaurs, or anything of the sort? I ask you to help us, that we might help you. And maybe it will improve your standing with Ranter, and lead him to set you free again. What say you?"

Tsak does an eye-roll, but only in his mind. He keeps his face dispassionate.
Rasheel has made the depth of his idealism and it's racial underpinnings quite clear. Now what is needed is more concrete information regarding his behavior and actions whilst SERVING and RESPECTING the minotaur race.
He hopes Ranter is up to the task and can see the same foundation that Tsak sees in his brother, whom Tsak is convinced is a brazen thug and law breaker.

Elyas isn't really surprised to hear that Rasheel is very likely a Horned Skull member, but he tries his best to read into Rasheel's body language when he denies doing anything but telling Yesia to get lost. Sense motive = 20, with a natural 20!
he also uses the opportunity of sitting behind Rasheel to glance over the minotaur looking for injuries in line with the fight with Yesia when she was killed. perception = 11 (ignore the second roll at +6, i apparently clicked twice...)
until he notices something out of place with what Rasheel is saying, Elyas will remain quiet, as Ranter is doing a good job so far of steering the conversation

"We talk... but it's like saying you got roughed up by a crooked guard... the more you talk about it the more likely you'll get another visit from the guard... or in this case the thugs."}

He'll pause before leaving, as if gathering his mojo for the next stage, but he's really hoping the imbecile will finally say something useful. If not, though, Rolth is prepared to walk away. His preferred next stop would be Juran's place. If there is a key to be grabbed from the guard, who must surely have confiscated such a thing when arresting him, we'll take it.

Elyas suddenly wishes there weren't so many outsiders in the room for this conversation. he stays quiet hoping that Ranter is able to get his brother to say something incriminating. he makes eye contact with the other petals, holding a hand out to try to make sure they also realize it is best if no one interrupts what Ranter is attempting to do here.
At the same time, Elyas is almost convinced himself that Ranter could be sympathetic to the Horned Skulls. he rolls Ranter's words around in his head, trying to convince himself that Ranter is just baiting his brother and not actually offering to help him harass the non-minotaurs.

OOC: We have flyers abounding in the area.
To be mass produced you have to consider a few things. Reproducing written material without using a printing press is expensive, both in time and resources. So that leaves us with a few options. If each flyer is identical then a craftsman has been employed to create a block by which each flyer is stamped out. This would be a wooden block carved by a skilled person otherwise the flyer would be so crude the words on it would be nearly unreadable. Not many of those in a town like this. If the flyers are not identical then to be mass produced you either have a single person working hours upon hours writing them, or a group of people each doing a few. If it’s a single person we can likely visit a shop and see who has bought a lot of ink and paper lately. If it’s a group of people we could still see who is buying ink, but the information to be gained here is that the HS has a group of people dedicated to making these flyers.
Also, just how literate a society is the island population? It seems as if everything is being written down at least in Yesias world. Can everyone read and write or are only a few people skilled in that? Is paper available in such quantities that the purchase of a lot of it would go unnoticed?
Someone is paying for all the supplies needed to make those flyers whether it be paper, ink, a craftsman to create a block, the local Printer(if these people have a press), or a scribe to hammer these things out.

He sounds stern, but you can tell that Ranter overplayed his hand by trying to involve you, Rasheel immediately tenses up at the mention of you covering up Yesia's murder, and looks at his brother.
"Ranter... I'm done talking to you, unless you're going to arrest me, I'm leaving."

Tsak tales a half-step back as the boorish lout pushes past. He says nothing and keeps his face impassive, wishing to give away as little as possible. He has no doubts that this uncouth upstart is up to his neck in the troubles that plague the village. At some stage push will come to shove and he wants the minotaur to be in the dark regarding the petals abilities.

The idea of running down a healer seems strong as does following the money trail. More and more he is feeling he is not an investigator but there is not much to be done.

I got the feeling there was more to the story and I definitely think he was involved in her death. he did not seem to have any wounds from a fight, but that doesn't mean he isn't involved. I really think he is our best suspect at this point, but we have no evidence. we need to find a way to investigate him closer without making any more political messes for ourselves.

"You could check his home? You said you would recognise one of the blades used in the attacks, it may be worth searching his home... I can keep him away from it while you search if you would like. As for his friends, Rash is friends with any Minotaur, and as many as he can be. He's a bit of a social leader, they listen to him and want to be around him. As much as it pains me to say this, if he's involved I want to know."
Gadin looks solemn.
"Finding the money might work, though I am not sure where they would have bought it from, it could have been from a trader just passing through, there's not anywhere in town that would sell large quantities of paper... as for looking for a healer, I'm not sure that would work, from what you've said, and what we've heard, the wemics are unlikely to go to Shelian or any other 'official' healer, I suspect they wouldn't be honest with you even if you found some who had been in an altercation, simply because of how scared you said Juran was."
Gadin and Ranter look at one another, before Gadin speaks.
"We don't have the names of those who have been killed... that's the issue. That's what Yesia was investigating at the time of her death, and she didn't seem to get very far..."

"I understand... I'll get him out the house and give you clearance to get in. I assume a lock won't be much trouble to you. Don't break it... I don't want Rash knowing that someone was there."
He sighs.
"Might as well get it done."
With that he leads you across the town, to an area you've not really had occasion to go to, and he leads you down an alley. Once you get to the end of the alley he points at a house just out of sight of the mouth of the alley.
"I'll go take Rash out for a drink... we'll probably be gone a couple of hours, should give you more than enough time. If you finish earlier, have Gadin come and get me, and we'll meet up back in my office. Wait until I've gotten Rash away before breaking in, and remember RASH CAN'T know you were there..."
He takes a deep breath before going over to the building, you hear him knock on the door, and speak.
"Hey Rash, let's go grab a drink... I'm sorry about earlier... let's go and chat as brothers."
Rasheel responds.
"Where are your friends?"
"I've sent them away Rash, lets just be brothers for tonight, okay?"
"Fine... as long as you're buying the first round." you hear a short laugh as Rasheel heads off with his brother.
Moving quickly over to the door, you see that the building is locked up, including the shutters. It's a two storey building with shutters on the doors, it's a fairly nice home, similar to several of the other homes around her, and very different to what you've seen in the Mixed Taur area.
You suspect you've managed to get up to the building without being noticed, but that won't hold out for long, you'll have to get through the door quickly.

However you do find something akin to a Manifesto in the office, it seems to talk about splitting up the Taur into individual groups and outlawing cross Taur relationships. Oddly enough, it doesn't state that any particular group of Taur are to be treated BETTER, but simply kept segregated.}
You all swiftly enter the home as Angus opens the lock with incredible ease, and allowing you to look around. The home is nicely kept, there is a reception room wide and open plan with a small area for food preparation in one corner and a small table next to it.
It has a few chairs around a fire place, and to the left a door way that leads to something akin to an office, with a desk and several papers, where Elyas goes first. To the right is a stairwell leading upwards to the first floor.

There is a single bed, a couple of bedside tables. Over the bed, hanging in a place of prestige is a dagger, which looks odd to you. The bed is well kept, and closer inspection shows that it is well used.}

It is only a tiny amount, but more than you'd expect if one cut themselves shaving or by accident. You don't disturb anything to find these, so there is nothing to put back. }

The darkened house creaked as members of the eight petaled rose moved quietly about the residence, each discovering things on their own while Mak stood next to the door looking out onto the front entryway while he awaited Tsak's response. He wasn't going to leave his post unless he knew it would be covered by another and since Tsak joined him after he started the look out he felt the duty fell to him first to watch for activity. it looks like Rasheel is really big on keeping taurs separated. not that he wants one to be seen as better than others, but from an almost religious standpoint he believes that each race was meant to fulfill a specific function and that any mixing of the races is a bad thing. it looks like his views are widely known, and there are a lot of letters in his desk both for and against his ideals. nothing very incriminating there, but it does paint a picture of what he believes.

Angus shares with the group that he has the remains of many death certificates what may be the missing people that Yesia was investigating. Angus also notices the door is open and its time to leave quickly and quietly not like thieves sneaking away but as folk who have right to be where they are at.

Rasheel and some other minotaurs killed her, including using the weird knife. They planted bits of liontaur fur and such to make it look like liontaurs were involved in the killing. An alternate explanation would be that this strange knife is connected to whatever military scout unit his gear is indicative of. So there might be more such blades, and he might be innocent. But either way, this is enough for Ranter to confront him and gain some cooperation, because he looks guilty and will have to admit it or help us enough to exonerate himself. So let's go as Angus suggests, although we could pick a moment when no one is directly observing us if possible. Let's leave things how we found them, and lock the door behind us."

Kiwina isn't sure about the answer to his question, as finding the two together would not give the Petals a chance to brief Ranter in advance, but going to Ranter alone risks Rasheel noticing something that tips him to someone being there. Overall, it might be best to brief Ranter first.
Tsak comes out of his reverie and looks guiltily at Mak. Sorry mate, I was in my own world for a bit there.
Tsak will use his vantage point to discern when no-one is looking and signal the group to leave.
As they make their way out of the area Tsak throws Mak a wink then proceeds to admonish him for getting the party lost and not knowing the difference between a brewery and a barn. He then suggests the soldier make up for it by buying the first round. If anyone takes a particular interest in the group he'll approach and ask for directions to the 'Pig and Whistle', a watering hole that has been recommended to the group by 'one of the guards, didn't catch his name...'

Elyas is in agreement that going to confront Rasheel now and hoping to catch him off-balance and in a public spot seems like the best move. but, learning from previous mistakes, he first asks Gadin what he thinks is the best way to handle bringing forward evidence as damning as this knife and the burnt records.
(OOC: to clarify, I'm confused how Rasheel had the death certificates for the missing deaths. we found a stack of death certificates at Yesia's house already. they were the names that weren't in the official record book, but we did have death certificates. were there multiple copies? )

The party regroups at one of the nearby taverns, bring the dagger with them, and ensuring they don't leave anything disturbed, managing to walk about without gathering any noticeable attention.
Gadin things for a moment.
"Perhaps speaking to Ranter first might be wise... if you immediately speak to Rasheel you will have the element of surprise yes, but you would then implicate Ranter in the deed. I would suggest that having Ranter not appear to be involved would be more valuable than anything you would gain from grabbing Rasheel immediately, after all you did say you would meet Ranter back at his office..."
Gadin shrugs.
"It is, of course up to you, I would just not want to cause Ranter any further problems, he has been going out of his way to help you find out if his brother is involved. He may also be able to suggest some psychological tricks to get his brother to speak about this and give up what he knows, that alone is potentially more valuable than any element of surprise you may have. Especially since if I'm Rasheel and I still keep the dagger I used in a murder, then I've already planned what I'm going to say if anyone asks about it."
The party needs to decide which route they want to take, confronting Rasheel immediately, or discuss with Ranter first?

Rolth votes to go to Ranter first. "Ranter's the one we ultimately need on our side, and if we confront and end up killing Rasheel without somehow extracting a public confession, we'll be hung out to dry, possibly literally."

Kiwina already thought that overall, it might be best to brief Ranter first. Moreover, he does not agree with taking anything from Rasheel's house, even the dagger or death certificates. If these things are taken, it is more likely to tip Rasheel off, and Rasheel is more likely to be believed if he accuses the Petals of fabricating false evidence against him than if the evidence is found in his home.

Rolth agrees with Kiwina about not removing the evidence. If we take it, we can't prove we got it from Rasheel. Probably better for Ranter to go officially investigate based on a tip.
