DM Mark - A Sunny Day
Friday June 21st, 2019 9:32:14 PM

A run to the Catacombs is made by some of the members of the Eight Petaled Rose, as others amuse themselves on board. Elyas asks Ramsey how their new recruits Tad and Riles are doing. Ramsey replies, ”Ahh, time will tell. Life aboard ship is hard work. A voyage should give us a good feel for their fitness to this life. In the meantime, there’s plenty ‘a maintenance work I can put ‘em to even while the Rose is in port. If they’re not serious about this, I’ll know soon enough.”

Rolth puzzles over the strange coins that Aaroth had.

As Petals are making sure their ship is ready to sail, they see a minotaur dressed in travelling clothes walking down the dock flanked by two armored minotaur guards bearing the Duke’s purple cloaks. The guards march with a purpose and dock workers quickly out of their way. They are clearly escorts and mean business, but their charge seems a bit unsure. They stop before the gang plank leading onto the Rose. One of the guards says, [b]”Ahoy there, is this the Rose? We bring Gadin, and he is sent here by the Duke. May we come aboard?”

Assuming you let them aboard, Gadin will ask the guards to remain on the dock as he proceeds to board the Rose. They frown, but agree to let the younger minotaur go up without them.

Aboard, Gadin says, “I, er, hello. My name is Gadin. We’ve, um, some people have been killed in Greenfell. Yesia works there, and she said she needs some real help with something. I told her that maybe the Purple Duke could help. So, I bought her message to the Purple Duke, and he said that you could probably help me. So, um, can you come with me to Greenfell? It’s real important. Yesia is pretty worried about this. I’ve never seen her this worried. The Duke said you were the right people for this. Can you help us?”

Pointing back toward Imod City, Rolth asks, "Greenfell, that place about a day over that way? What problem is facing Yesia? If the Duke thinks the task might be for us, well, he has an eye for our capabilities ever since the Taurnament, I suppose. Look, no need to be nervous, we fellow taurs may be different in some ways, but inside our hearts, we are all taurs first, by Domi! So out with it, how can we help?"

What separated Mak from the rest of his family was altruism. Mak had it and they quite frankly did not. Any one of them would have settled for a commission and a posting away from the battles of the war, Mak had insisted on working his way up from the regular rank and file, to fight alongside the commoners and provide them with as much support as he could. It was also why he still mourned for Malcolm.

This Gadin fellow and for that matter this Duke Purple seemed to be genuine in their need and commitment to help. The others may not have realized it, but those guards with Gadin may as well have come with a message that the Duke expected them to aid the taur.

Mak shifted in his seat and listened to the taur's story as he tried to suss out any unspoken facts. The taur spoke of Yesia. Mak had no idea who or what that was, so he looked to his fellows to see if they recognized the name. He couldn't tell if they knew of Yesia, but the others seemed sold on the idea of helping the man and that pleased the archer.

Rolth's suggestion to bring the mandolin was met with a smile as Mak commented. "Certainly, old bean, I've a few questions about it anyway, like which way do I hold it and should I be using a bow with it? And you said mandolin, I thought I had a fiddle. That shopkeeper must be having a grand laugh right now, but the jokes on him old bean. I like the look of this thing, but with all those strings it does look terribly complicated so a trick or two would definitely be helpful."

Having been distracted with other things, namely trying to catch a particularly elusive rat, Falco does not see what is happening until they are on the boa. He sees that the young Minotaur is telling the truth, gives a small quiet hoot, and goes back to the hunt.

Somehow concentrating on the rat instead of the matter at hand makes him feel more halfling then beastfolk at the moment. Still he will catch it with beak not hands so.... back to beastfolk thinking.

DM Mark - "If the Duke wants us to investigate, then of course we will."
Monday June 24th, 2019 11:56:13 PM

Just at the Petals were preparing to set sail, some guards show up escorting someone that needs help. But this person is not some officious noble as is often the case. Rather, this Gadin seems like a regular person. He says he comes from Grenfell and someone named Yesia needs help. The Petals begin gathering their gear, ready to do what needs to be done.

Angus says, "Interesting, we don't need to look for adventure, it looks for us.

Rolth
suggests Mak bring his mandolin, thinking travel may provide an opportunity for some musical training along the way.

Falco smells a rat, and chases it in the hold. Giving in to his feral halfling nature, he eventually catches one, but he can tell there are more. But that will have to wait.

Kiwina says something about wemics smelling fear, which causes Gadin to look nervously at Rolth.

It’s clear that this Gadin is worried and weary. Elyas asks if he just came all the way from Greenfell, knowing it is about a day’s walk, and asks if he needs food or drink. Tzak hurries to bring him some water as well as fruit, nuts and cheese. Gadin gratefully accepts them, munching as he talks.

Gadin responds, ”Well, I, uh, I did travel yesterday. Yesia was real worried, so I didn’t want to wait. I travelled part of the night, and I rested a bit outside Castle Violet. See, I have a friend that works in there and I was afraid that if I showed up real late to the castle, it might get him in trouble. So I slept outside the castle, and waited until I saw people coming in and out. I think I saw you folks leaving. I guess my friend Foosnir was with you driving a cart. I shoulda’ hollered at him, but well, it looked like he was busy and I needed to get Yesia’s message to the Duke.”

“Yesia? She’s a clerk in town. She helps with keeping records of births, deaths, that sort of thing. She said we’re supposed to be reporting all that to the Duke, but she said we havn’t been doing a very good job of it. She new to her job there. She’s only been there for a few weeks.”

With the supplies to get the ship ready, runs to the Catacombs and “interviews” of Tad and Riles, it’s early afternoon.

Gadin says, “Well, I am glad you’re coming to help. I guess we can leave now if you like. I can see in the dark, but I don’t know if all of you can. Or we can wait until morning.”

Tad and Riles seem to think this would be much more fun. Ramsey has already said he can keep the boys busy - which may be what concerns them.

”Hey, hey. Can we go? We can handle ourselves on the road.”
“Yeah, we wanna be adventurers like you guys!”
“Yeah, head off into the unknown! Kill a dragon or two. That sorta thing.”
“Yeah, I think we could do that kinda stuff.”
"But we'll need swords and bows. That sorta stuff."

To Gadin he says, "Seems like we ought to get there as quickly as we can. Is there a place to stay or camp on the way if it gets too late?"

Mak watched the antics of Tad and Riles with some humor and decided to lend a hand. "Gentlemen." Mak said as he addressed the two boys. "If you can outshoot me, or lay a blade upon me when I've returned. You'll get five gold for the effort. Now, do as Ramsey asks and train hard, because there's money on the line now. Cheers!"

The young nobleman, archer, and soldier had changed out of his uniform and into his travelling clothes...wrinkled and a little dusty, but serviceable for the trip. He idly counted the arrows in his quiver and the overflow he had in his pack. The battle in the casino had used a few, but he was prepared and felt he had enough for the trip.

At the suggestion about travelling at night, Mak spoke up. "This one cannot see in the dark, fellow beans. If you want my assistance handling nasties and beasties at range some good light from yon sun would be needed." He said as he slung the mandolin over one shoulder and his bow over the other.

While he waited on the others to join them on deck Mak pulled out his flask and took a long draw on it and then winced as the liquor passed down his throat. "Damn! That's good." he remarked as he felt the warmth enter his body and ease the pain in his leg.

DM Mark - "Seems like there is no time to sit around, we will have to talk as we walk."
Tuesday June 25th, 2019 7:51:45 PM

The party is in agreement that Tad and Riles are not going on this trip. They are very disappointed.

There is some discussion about how to travel to Grenfell, and some prefer to not travel at night. In the end the decision seems to be a compromise - travel while light and sleep in the field on the way there.

You set out. As you go, you talk with Gadin. You learn that Yesia is concerned about some recent minotaur deaths. Minotaurs can be a rough bunch, particularly in some smaller towns and settlements, so fighting is not uncommon. It seems that minotaurs have a tradition of a Kayleb - a sort of minotaur duel to resolve disputes of honor. But even with this, sometimes they just fight.

Gadin also seems to be concerned about a recent, nearby liontaur settlement. Gadin seems to be a bit of a separatist, and is worried about tensions between liontaurs and minotaurs here on Minotaur Island. He has nothing against other races - but the tensions between these two groups in the vicinity of Greenfell are making him nervous. And the liontaurs don’t even have this tradition of a Kayleb to resolve disputes.

How do you make camp? Is there a watch?
Gadin will defer to you on this.

Having no other questions for Gadin, the party finds a nice, large oak to camp under. You decide on a watch. Gadin is glad to be travelling with so competent a group, and he says as much. This is clearly a minotaur that is not accustomed to sleeping rough, and he is ill prepared. It is chilly that night, and Tzak starts a fire - which feels rather nice to the travellers and somehow just makes you all feel better.

Food/rations are consumed, the fire eventually dies down, and you go to sleep. It is dark, but there is a half moon and starlight. Those with low-light vision can see passably well.

(The DM was a little unclear on the watches, but I am assuming there are approximately four two-hour watches.)

Late that night, on Falco’s watch as he sits still, he hears a noise. Looking in the direction of the noise, his sharp eyes pick out a small figure, about his size moving towards you in the brush. It’s trying to stay low. Actually, he can hear other noises in the brush as well, and perhaps some murmuring in the distance.

Goblins!

Mak tries to deftly roll away from the goblin above him, and while he does move 5’, the goblin gets an attack of opportunity (AOO). (A 5’ move can be attempted while prone, but “but doing so requires a full-round action to move 5 feet, and the DC is increased by 5”.) Though Mak cannot yet see him he does feel the creatures blade as it hit him for 2 points of damage.

Kiwina stands up, which provokes an AOO from the goblin by him. The creepy little guy stabs the mighty centaur as he stands for 4 points of damage. The Kiwina’s hoof lands a wicked blow to the creature’s chest, killing the thing. (Thanks for the clarification on the armor issue. Kiwina did not take the previous 4 points, and only has a total of 4 damage.)

Rolth stands, and lashes out at the goblin standing above Elyas, caving in the creature’s skull with his mace (dead).

Falco shoots the goblin that attacked him, landing an arrow in his throat. The goblin falls back dead. He shouts, "Awake petals, let’s give them a greeting and protect our guide."

Tzak lashes out at the goblin in his prone state, stabbing the thing with his kukri. Then his cat launches itself at the goblin in a flurry of fur and claws. Even so, as Tzak stands, this provokes an attack, and the goblin lands a critical hit on the ranger for 4 damage!

Elyas wakes to see a goblin standing over him, even as Kiwina kills it. Elyas casts a Light spell on Rolth’s armor. Suddenly the camp area is awash with light.

Gadin is a little out of his element. He rolls to his feet and pulls out a dagger. With a yell, he rushes forward to the one near Mak ready to stab the thing.

Three of the goblins lay dead. The rest seem to conclude this was a really, really bad idea.

They scream and holler as they turn to run off into the night. This provokes an attack from Gadin who kills the one near Mak. Tzak and his cat will also get an AOO.

If you speak Goblin: Highlight to display spoiler: {

“I’m faster than you Buttsmack. If they get anyone, it’s gonna be you. See ya!”
“Aaaa. Don’t leave me here!”
}

There are six goblins running away from the group. (Five if Tzak and his cat kill theirs.)

(Just a reminder for future encounters that a prone attacker has a –4 penalty on melee attack rolls and cannot use a ranged weapon (except for a crossbow). A prone defender gains a +4 bonus to Armor Class against ranged attacks, but takes a –4 penalty to AC against melee attacks. Standing up is a move-equivalent action that provokes an attack of opportunity.)

Are goblins common in this area? He finds hear more goblins screaming in the distance. (While you cannot see this from where you are, all of the goblins make their saves and pull back from the entangled area and continue to flee. In the future, include the save and DC for spells you cast and the effect.)

Tzak drops the goblin that attempted to flee from him. Emeralda pounces on the thing just to make sure it’s dead.

Rolth Asks Gadin if goblins have been part of the problem he mentioned. Elyas likewise asks about this, and he adds that it seems like an odd coincidence that you recently fought goblin pirates.

Gadin responds, ”I’m not sure about any goblin pirates. But goblins are a bit of an infestation, and mostly a nuisance. While it’s a bit unusual for them to attack an armed party, it’s not unusual for them to attempt to ambush what they may consider weaker prey. Perhaps they thought a group of sleeping travellers were an easy mark. I think these goblins will steer clear of travellers for a while after this.”

Falco Ambersier creates a light source to make it easier for those without any special vision.
Angus Macgrump explains he can speak goblin and tries to look or more things left behind by the goblins than what was already found.
Mak peeks into the bag to see what is in there.

Rolth gets no response, even comprehending languages doesn’t help him, as apparently this creature isn’t speaking any language.

Once the bag is opened, inside you see a badger, that seems to hop up to you and rub against you each in turn, as if it knows you let it free. It would appear that the Goblins were going to snack on it before long, and you have saved it. It nuzzles each of you again in turn, and it seems to follow Mak particularly, always staying nearby him.

It’s a playful creature and seems to enjoy playing games such as fetch, and happily burrows for food itself, even bringing some a rabbit back with it after it goes out hunting, and dropping it messily at Mak’s feet.

Tsak Rezar keeps a tight grip on Esmerelda, ensuring she doesn’t go after the badger.
Elyas immediately goes back to sleep, ignoring the badger’s appearance.

Angus Macgrump keeps his weapons close, but also goes back to sleep.
Mak looks at this odd creature, and treats it somewhat like a pet.

The rest of the night passes without incident, with everyone getting enough rest to wake up refreshed and ready for the next leg of the journey. It begins well enough, the walk talking you across fields and plains and open areas, with some quite nice sights to see.

Gadin is mostly silent during the journey, unless directly spoken to, he seems deep in thought, and only speaks to direct you and ensure everyone is still with him.

The badger that you found during the fight with the goblins is apparently a little enamoured with you, and has been following you all day, staying close to Mak. Whenever you stop for a rest or a drink, or to eat, it nuzzles against a different one of you each time.

It gets to after lunch, late afternoon when Badger suddenly seems to get closer to Kiwina (who he was walking next to at the time)

((OoC: Happy Independence Day to all our American players!!))

Tsak Rezar climbs a tree and tries to encourage others to follow him up.
Elyas brings up a shield to defend himself and his allies
Rolth Niheow tries to find something to climb up to hide from the stampede, while asking if they could fight whatever it is.
Kiwina picks up the badger, it allows it him to and then he realises which direction he needs to run in.
Falco Ambersier ignores the badger, and stays with the party.

Gadin speaks up.

“It could be Scythehorns… they are dangerous and climbing won’t do you much good…”

He looks around.

“There’s no harm in killing them in self defence, to be honest, we could do with a few less around here…”

He stands ready to fight, just as a group of six Scythehorns burst from the underbrush and charge towards the group.

They charge forward with their large horns lowered , ready to skewer anything that finds itself stuck in front of them.

You can have one round of actions before they’re upon you and attacking into the group!

What do you do?

Kiwina attacks Scythe Horn 6 twice, and connects once
Falco Ambersier stays in his unconscious fever dream
Angus Macgrump fires at Scythe Horn 5, and connects!
Mak ((Correct! I meant 5, my bad!)) Strikes out twice, and strikes out twice.

The Scythe Horns continue their assault, with S5 moving up to Mak and attacking him, S3 moving to attack Angus (who has finally appeared on the map!) and the final S6 attack Kiwina.

Gadin seems a little afraid, and after his first poor showing hasn’t taken any more shots at the creatures, letting you heroes do the work.

Scythe Horn 3 is the only one to connect with his attack as the other two have their horns deflected by the armour being worn by their targets.

He waits for you to skin all the materials and harvest the beasts, and between all of what you recover, you find that the horns are particularly valuable, all in all, pelts and horns you think you have perhaps 1000gp worth of goods here.

Mak walked along hopelessly ignorant of the tension in the air. He was mindlessly walking along oblivious to his surroundings. He noted the various taurs but gave little thought to whether their number and type was unusual or special in any way. This was taur island, of course there would be taurs, so he gave it little thought.

OOC: Sense Motive +0, Roll 3; Perception +4, Roll 7

He did know that this Yesia person sent Gadin to get them and it had to do with murders of some sort, but unless Mak had misread his companions and they were some kind of investigators he doubted that a group of adventurers could offer much. Maybe she knew who the next target was going to be and they'd be set as guards? He had enough presence of mind though to keep these thoughts to himself.

Oddly enough his thoughts also went back to the war and the carnage, the bodies, and the nobles that rode about on their steeds once it was all done. A handful of them celebrating a victory between hundreds of combatants where less than twenty survived. He could still smell the soft dirt that had been piled upon him in the mass grave, the same smell he experienced with the most recent burial of the badger.

Mak's hand twitched at the memory of being buried alive and his attempt to push the dirt from his body. It was one of the few memories he had of the time immediately after the battle, or perhaps he had formed it from the retelling by his nurses. It was really too hard and painful to remember.

Gadin's words suggested that the locals were insular though Mak hadn't noticed until the minotaur pointed it out. It was about trust, Mak knew, and at present these "people" simply did not trust them. Mak was certain Rolth's bardic ways would win them over. Mak's own performance at the dukes proved he had lost some of the finesse needed to navigate the intrigues of court.

So Mak remained quiet and observed as best he could.

OOC: Perception +4, Roll 15.

Elyas looks around, concerned about the cold welcome. apparently the cumminity as a whole wasn't wanting outsider help. hopefully they wouldn't cause more trouble than they solved by walking into whatever unknown mess was going on here.

Tsak Rezar thinks about what it could mean, and whether it is link to previous hostilities.
Elyas is concerned the community doesn’t want the Petals here.
Rolth Niheow looks around trying to spot anyone who stands out.
Kiwina tries to understand what’s going on
Falco Ambersier attempts to be diplomatic in his appearance
Angus Macgrump tries to speak to one of the members of the village.
Mak is flooded with memories, distracting him

Kiwina - Highlight to display spoiler: {They do not trust outsiders at all. They trust non Minotaur Taur even less. Since you are both outsiders, and have non Minotaur Taur amongst you, they are extra wary.}

Gadin sighs. “I suppose we should get you settled down, we should find you some lodgings…”

He pauses and looks at Rolth and Kiwina.

“You may have to find lodging further down there.”

He points down to a smaller part of town, which isn’t QUITE walled off from the main town areas, but is demarcated.

Just as he says this, Angus speaks up to one of the Taur of the village, asking about Yesia, the Taur looks shocked.

“You haven’t heard? Of course you haven’t you’ve only just arrived… Yesia was killed last night…”

Rolth huddles up the Petals, out of the earshot of any locals other than Gadin. "I suggest that we don’t announce our reason for being here yet. We don’t want the murderers to know we are looking for them. We’ll probably have to tell a few people along the way to get their cooperation, but no point tipping our hand too much. Now, shall we go down to the fenced off area and find lodging suitable for us foreigners?"

"The rest of you could probably get nice accomodations, but Rolth and I won't. They still remember the war here. Or the attitudes that fed it."

He continues walking toward the fenced area. "Gadin, will you be joining us for a bit to explain what you want us to do?"

"Of all the stupidity... Well it is what it is I guess." he looks at Gadin "We will all stay together as were a team and you, you who asked for our help, need to stop with the uneasy looks. You wanted help and came to us so you get all of us. Better you help us smooth the way with the others."

Tsak's ears prick up at the news that their contact has been killed.
And from the look on the Taur's face there may be more to the story.
What could happen to a clerk? What did she find out?

He follows the team as they head toward their accommodation. The next few hours could prove interesting.

Mak was nervous at the news and was unsuccessful at hiding it. His head darted this way and that as he looked for unseen enemies. His hand instinctively reached for the bow laying across his chest and squeezed the ornate grip until his knuckles turned white. Those able to read him didn't see fear however, what they saw was watchfulness.

"Be alert, my beans." he said unnecessarily.

“Look… go find some lodging, and I’ll go and ask around, see what’s going on and perhaps if I can shed a bit more light on what has happened.”

He points you to an Inn called “The Green Giant” and heads deeper into the town itself.

You enter the tavern, and everyone quickly glances at you, once they see that there are Taur amongst you they go back to what they were doing. The Liontaur barkeep waves you over, with a big smile on his face.
