Dinner (DM John)
Tuesday July 17th, 2018 8:30:43 PM

Rolth perks up at Ramsey's approach, and even more when he hears of the feast. "Well done, Ramsey, you handsome devil! How clever of you to arrange this on your own initiative.

”Well, demurs Ramsey at the praise, “It was Amaretto’s idea.”

“Tell us more about this charming Amaretto, will you?”

Ramsey perks up at the question. Eyes looking away dreamily, ”She is woooonderful. Her raven black hair, tipped in silver, frames ivory white skin and her bright yellow eyes shine as she speaks.” It appears Ramsey may be smitten.

”I think she inherited the Roost from Roco when he died. Didn’t you know he was hit by a meteor!” responds the bramble to Rolth’s question about Roco. ”I think she’s a cousin or something. Phaeline moved on. Rumor has it that she and Amaretto didn’t get on well.”

Elyas chimes in, ”How do you know this lady, Ramsey.

”She sent Boffo to find out what happened to you and he found me. When I told her what happened, she insisted on me keeping a hot meal ready for you until you returned. I stop by the Roost occasionally to see how she is doing,” he adds a bit shyly. ”This last time I dropped in is when she asked me to deliver the invitation.”

The Petals each prepare for dinner and make their way to the Wanderer’s Roost.

By the time the Petals arrive at the Wanderer’s Roost, the place is a bit crowded. However, one side is clearly reserved for a party of eight with a table nearby similarly open. The larger of the two taur sized table is set for eight. It is clearly prepared for the Petals. At one setting is a liontaur sized cushion, two settings are placed before large chairs, and another setting is before a space without any furniture. On the other side of the table a platform with steps on either end support four man sized chairs, one of those chair being equipped with extra cushions to raise a halfling to proper dining height. The smaller table, still taur-sized, has only one setting, but four chairs and is clearly reserved as well.

”RAMSEY!” shouts an alto voice, melodious despite its volume. The source of this exclamation is a truly gorgeous lionesstaur. Ramsey did not describe her inaccurately, but he did fail to mention the feminine power she naturally exudes as she gracefully crosses the main room to meet you. Her movements are felinely graceful even for a liontaur. Her tail elegantly swishes behind her revealing its overlong tuft of hair at its tip. Its black hair, like the full tresses on her head are tripped with silver. On her human portion she wears a long sleeved white blouse with flowing sleeves, mostly hidden by dark blue apron equipped with multiple pockets clearly bulging with unseen contents.

As she approaches, she curtseys lithely., ”Welcome to the Wanderer’s Roost. Let me show you to your table, she says as she turns to lead you.

BOFFO! she shouts to the back, startling the patrons at the table in front of her. ” Drinks for our special guests.”

From that direction you see a young minotaur rushing toward the table, in one hand he clutches a mass of mugs; the other grasps the handles of three over filled pitchers. As he hurries your way, there are occasional outcries from other patrons as they are stepped on, sloshed, or bumped by the scurrying young waiter rushing to heed his mistresses call.

Tsak is intrigued by the lionesstaur, however he can't help but wonder if this is merely the celebration it seems. He decides to simply enjoy the festivities but to keep his wits about him (perception).

Rolth, bows fiercely in response the curtsey, then reigns it in to avoid upsetting good Ramsey. "I thank you for this generous invitation, Miss Amaretto!" He gives her a close look, as well as Boffo. Does either look or sound familiar. Something tickles at the back of his memory, Amaretto, Amarantha, both sound similar, but could they be? Wasn't the latter a dryad? And Cecil, mooning around about a curse and lost love, just like in that garden. Coincidence? I wonder if he is a Farungian, he thinks to himself.

Oh what fun, another party! Have to be careful I could get use to this part of the job.

Falco gives a small bow as Amaretto greets them. "Thank you my lady. You give us a gift with your attention and it is appreciated. We are, of course, sorry about Roco. We did our best to save people but that sounds like plain bad luck."

Good thing it was a quick death I guess. He could have gotten that bloodweed sickness.

Gothruk smiles and takes his seat interested in what will happen next.
He is a bit weary about interactions so won't drink anything for now, at least until he gets more comfortable.
(sense motive = 21)

He tries to get feeling as to why they were invited here, he has no doubt that it is in sone part to celebrating everyone's survival and our hand in it. But he also wouldn't be surprised if she had another objective.

Finnian decides on darkbrown leathers and a green undershirt. It's far wrinklier than he would like and his aunt Ava would be appalled if she knew when the last time he had a proper bath was, but that was long past and he was doing his best. "Besides," he thinks to himself "In the shadow of these colossal Taurs I'll likely not be noticed." Still he feels odd going to a party under dressed. When he sees Miss Amaretto the hue of his cheeks darkens for her grace makes him even more aware of his state.

He bows slightly and says a quiet thanks for the invitation before accepting an offered mug and taking a place at the far end of the table in a smaller seat.

Not all that long ago - What has it been, only a few weeks? he thinks to himself - he was just a poor sailor and reformed con man. Dinner Arrives (DM John)

Tsak keeps a wary and suspicious eye open. Tsak Highlight to display spoiler: {You notice that Amaretto occasionally takes food to and empty dishes from one of the private rooms in the back. }

Rolth responds in courteous kind and takes a close look at the new staff. Rolth Highlight to display spoiler: { Upon further inspection you realize that Amaretto is much older than she appears to be without close observation. You estimate her to be in her mid 30s (late middle aged for a liontaur). Neither Boffo nor Amaretto look familiar to you nor give any indication of being other than they appear to be: an older liontaur seemingly competent as an innkeeper and a young, somewhat awkward minotaur.}

Kiwina gladly accepts a pitcher from the young minotaur and rightly notices the containers are right sized for the intended recipients.

Sable also takes a closer look. Sable Highlight to display spoiler: {Upon further inspection you realize that Amaretto is much older than she appears to be without close observation. You estimate her to be in her mid 30s (late middle aged for a liontaur). She bears no identifying scar, but you notice that Amaretto occasionally takes food to and empty dishes from one of the private rooms in the back.}

Falco gives a small bow as Amaretto greets them. "Thank you my lady. You give us a gift with your attention and it is appreciated. We are, of course, sorry about Roco. We did our best to save people but that sounds like plain bad luck."

”Thank you kind sir,” responds their hostess with a slight nod. ”Luck never did favor him, but it’s better to burn out than fade away.”

Gothruk avoids drinking and wonders if there is an ulterior motive to their invitation. Gothruk Highlight to display spoiler: {You sense that Amaretto has a genuine gift for hospitality and enjoys her role as hostess thoroughly. You also perceive that she has an affection of a maternal nature toward the somewhat bumbling Boffo, even as she chides him. Of even greater interest, you note that she spends time personally attending to someone in one of the private chambers near the back of the common room. You detect nothing particularly sinister, but she does not allow Boffo or anyone else to enter or see into the room.}

Finnian, a bit self conscious, bows slightly and says a quiet thanks for the invitation before accepting an offered mug and taking a place at the far end of the table in a smaller seat.

Elyas ponders his recent past and wonders what the immediate future may hold.

The dinner is exceptional and seems to cater to a wide variety of tastes.

A classic dish, goat a fire, is placed near Rolth. Fitting, as this is a tradionation liontaur delicacy consisting of goat seared on the outside and near raw in the middle and covered in a thick paste of hot horseradish and spicy herbs. A thick meat pie filled with gravy drenched venison is nearly three feet in diameter. Bowls filled with heaping mounds of greens tossed with radishes (horse and common), pickled beets, goat cheese, and chestnuts are set at both ends of the table. Platters of cheese, nuts, dried fruit, and sausages are brought out as well. Mugs and pitchers never seem to empty as Boffo, under the watchful eye of Amaretto, almost continuously returns with refills.

Many stop by to share greetings and gratitude, but most tend to leave the heroes to themselves as if afraid to offend or interfere.

The night continues on in a warm, happy glow as bellies fill and platters and trays slowly empty.

As the meal continues with no nefarious overtones Tsak slowly unwinds. He notices Gothruks abstinence and raises a tankard in mock salute Boom boom! A big, strong taur like you shouldn't be afraid of a little boom boom.
Tsak wonders who is in the private dining room, but can't think of a way to find out that wouldn't be impolite.

Kiwina watches to see who sits at the other reserved table. Figuring four pitchers is about his limit, he nurses the second. He is a little put off by the raw goat, being consituted rather differently than a wemic, and claims a bit of indigestion. But it does not stop him from enjoying the evening.

It is also a bit troubling that folks wander off so quickly after stopping to say hello. Kiwina enjoys the conversations with the few who visit a while.

Rolth will follow Kiwina's wise lead, and make sure to engage with those other guests who will linger awhile for a friendly conversation. He'll also tease Ramsey occasionally, casting knowing glances between him and the lionesstaur when she isn't looking. Otherwise, he will enjoy this fine meal and drink, and desperately try to remain humble amidst all the temptation to be ostentatious about all the recent events. He will praise the meat platter, calling it, "The Greatest of All The Goats...hey does that make it the GOAT Goat?"

Before he sits Falco loosens his belt by a few notches anticipating a fine feast. As the food arrives he is not disappointed. The portions are big given the preponderance of the taur races so he has to pace himself taking small bits of everything.

As he eats he tries to sneakily cast detect magic from time to time, not looking for anything suspicious, just to entertain himself and see if any of the place is operating under enchantment.

He smiles as Tsak teases him and starts drinking the alcohol infront of him.
He will also enjoy the Goat, a delicious treat. As he eats he'll Strike up convocation. Falco, do you think it's within your reach to develop an arcane way to ward off plants? Or maybe it would be better to ask you Finnian seeing as you were able to control them last fight.

Thursday July 19th, 2018 10:46:42 PM

Tsak relaxes as the evening progresses, wondering about, but not actively trying to ascertain who might be in the private room.

Kiwina’s curiosity about the other reserved table is quickly satisfied when Ramsey is ushered to it. It appears Amaretto wishes him to be included as well, but not as one of Chessford’s heroes.

Rolth revels in the moment and haves some fun at Ramsey’s expense.

Sable rises to a call of nature and curiosity. Even the ever attentive Amaretto can not be all places at once. When he opens the door he sees: Sable Highlight to display spoiler: { seated at the table are two minotaurs. One is younger and dressed as a warrior, his shield and axe resting close at hand against the wall. More significantly though, he is a bramble! You barely not this as he rises to grab his sword and confront you.

”No. Barkly,” says the other minotaur calmly, ”He is one of those we came to speak with. He turns to you and nods in greeting, ”Well met, Sable Trueheart. I fear our meeting is a bit premature as I was hoping to talk with you and all of your companions later after all the other customers had departed. I fear my celebrity would prove a distraction were I recognized.”

And you do recognize this older minotaur dressed in plain work clothes. This is Gnym of Gnym, poet laureate of Minotaur Island and one of the judges of the Taurnament of Roses!

”Would you mind coming back later when we can speak more discreetly?”
}

Sable earns a hero point for boldness and style!

Falco sneaks out under the guise of a biological need to cast detect magic unnoticed. He succeeds in doing so and carefully scans the room. Falco Highlight to display spoiler: { The greatest magic here is not that of spells but of great cooking and warm hospitality. Other than the items you and your party possess, the only magic aura you detect is that on a necklace worn by an older liontaur. His amulet glows with a faint evocation aura. (For simplicity assume Falco succeeded in the Knowledge Arcana check. Note that to identify the item you have to be able to thoroughly examine it.) Now that you have noticed him, you see that he bears many scars and carries himself with a regal dignity likely obtained from surviving many battles. His human torso is covered in a black leather vest, with buttons of some sort of bone and his gray streaked mane is drawn back in two braids falling on either side of his muscled shoulders.

He notices your attention and starts to rise….
}

[Casting a spell with a verbal component such as detect magic has requires speaking in a strong voice (per the SRD). There is no way to do this surreptitiously. However, getting up to relieve oneself could give you the opportunity to cast it unobserved. I assumed that was what Falco attempted and succeeded with that stealth check. That would last 4 minutes, plenty of time to check things out.]

Gothruk relaxes yet continues to be concerned about the apparent vegetative aggression they have experience.

Elyas enjoys the meal but is a little reluctant to eat goat tartar and attempts to cook it himself.

A few minutes later Boffo places a platter of herb encrusted lamb chops roasted to be barely pink in the center before him, then wordlessly returns back to the kitchen.

From the other side of the room you see an older liontaur rise and approach you, his gaze fixed on your table. You see that he bears many scars and carries himself with a regal dignity likely obtained from surviving many battles. "Gothruk, I have been working on some things that might help with the plants. But it may be a while before I am strong enough to deal with foes like we have seen." When he hears the old liontaur talking about Hellhounds, he gulps a little. Those things are positively unnatural.

Rolth and Knowledge Local 10 or Knowledge Geography 10 (note that skills with a DC 10 or less can be attempted even if untrained) Highlight to display spoiler: {Hellhounds are endemic to Liontaur Island. The eastern end of the island consists of broken terrain, with ravines, gullies, sharp valleys, and so on. There is a cone-shaped mountain, a mostly extinct volcano that is sufficiently active to serve as a gateway for the hellhounds that materialize in the badlands. These monsters then range out, hunting herd animals and liontaurs until slain. Dealing with this threat is a natural part of survival on the island. The time of the meteor strike and resulting bloodgrass outbreak experienced a reduction in hellhound activity. There reappearance, ironically, is an indication that things are returning to normal.}

All Highlight to display spoiler: {Apologies from the DM new to the campaign who assumed setting knowledge was known by the players. The appearance of the hellhounds was an not meant to be a plot point.}

Sable waits to act on his knowledge of what is behind door number one.
Tsak enjoys the evening but longs for something a bit less confining than the inn.

Kiwina attempts to placate the elder wemic,
"Is that how you became an adult? I have heard that facing a hell hound in single combat is the surest way for a wemic to prove himself. Among my own people, it is fighting nawao, but as colts we would never dare to face one single-handed."
"Seems like it's time for another pitcher. . . Will you join me?"

The veteran scowls at the offer, but any rebuttal is, at least temporarily, silenced by Rolth’s intervention, "You are rright that therre are dangerrs rremaining in this land, and that ourr place is fighting them. I can tell that you have done yourr sharre of that, and we will cerrtainly be doing morre of it on the 'morrrow. But even the doughtiest warrriorrs must rregain theirr strrength between bouts. And what betterr way to restorre the fighting spirrit than by sharing meat, drink, and tales of victory? Come, join us, sharre yourr wisdom, and make us ready for tomorrrow's battles." He offers an open hand clasp, being careful of the elder's gnarled claws, which look painful.

”Bah,” replies the elder. ”You mock me. Look at me claws,” he exclaims raising up his twisted digits. ”Me days for fighting hell beasts be long gone, which is why you cubs should be out tharrr ‘stead of in heerrrr eatin' yerrr fill!”

Falco intercedes, ”"Honerable father, this is the first we have heard of the Hellhounds, that I know of, or else we would have headed that way already. Where were they last seen?"

He straightens his stooped shoulders and turns his head to stare at Falco with his left eye. (You see that his right is frosted with cataracts.) After a moment of tense silence, he seems to relax a bit ”Well, little one, I can believe you has not hearrrrd of the scourrrrge of the isle, but these heerrrr big ‘uns know better.”

Elyas recalls what he knows of hellhounds. Elyas Highlight to display spoiler: {[OOC: DC 8 as hellhounds are common in Liontaur Isle. Hellhounds are evil outsiders that enter the Isle through the semi-dormant volcano on the isle. They are vulnerable to cold and their bite is fierce and burns with fire. Finnian blanches at the talk of hell hounds.

Gothruk responds, ”Bravo, we have our next target then. Yes, tell us more of these hellhounds, why would demons be running around the taur Isles? And where were they last seen heading, so we can ambush them and not the other way around.”

Now yerr talkin’!” exclaims the liontaur. ”But you must be a bit daft ter not know about hellhounds. They come from Old Fire Mountain. I dunno wherrr the last uns werrr, but they have to be around somewhere.” He pauses a moment, flexing the claws of his forepaws. ”Say, now. An Appearance (DM John)
Tuesday July 24th, 2018 10:56:13 PM

Kiwina waits and listens. Tsak’s thoughts focus on the private room.

Finnian relaxes as he realizes that hellhound appearances are the norm for the Isle.

Rising to interpose himself between the old taur and his friends, Rolth explains, "Elder one, no one here is mocking you. I just asked you to share your wisdom from previous battles, that we might do more to avert this common threat to us all. Won't you do that over a beer?"

The scarred warrior seems placated a bit, but objects, ”Thank you, lad. Unforrrrtunately the beerrrrr aggrrrrravates the gout.”

While the Petals are engaging the elder warrior, Amaretto rushes out. Visibly relieved that heroes have not overly fueled his cantankerous disposition, she eases next to him, swishing her elegant long tail before his eyes, and staring warmly at him with her bright yellow eyes. In the background, you hear Ramsey let out a sigh.

”Come, Astedor. Allow these cubs to have there fun tonight, for they will surely go out to fight when it is time.” She gently leads him back to his table, gesturing to Boffo who swiftly appears with a steaming bowl. When Astedor resists, she grabs the bowl and places it under his nose. ”Mint custard with oysters,” she says, obviously tempting him with its aroma. There is no doubt she is a master of magic as the once belligerent old warrior literally purrs in delight as she sets the bowl before him.

Disaster averted, she returns to the Petals. ”Thank you for being so kind to ol’ Astedor Vigileye. It is hard for a warrior's heart to outlive his claws." She lowers her voice before continuing, ”The dinner crowd should be dispersing soon. Please stay a bit longer. I have something to show you.” With these last words, she glances meaningfully at Sable.

Her words prove true. Before long the common room is emptied out of guests, even Astedor departs, the mint oyster pie apparently having erased any memory of any potential animosity toward the Petals.

Amaretto quickly dismisses Boffo, ignoring his protestations for not being allowed to finish cleaning. As she departs, he quickly bars all the doors and shutters all the windows. She explains, ”You will soon realize the need for discretion once our guest presents himself.”

She then goes to the back room and calls softly, ”They are ready for you Master Grym.”

Soon a large bramble minotaur steps out, his shield slung on his back and his sword sheathed, but his hand seems ready to draw it at a moment’s provocation. He steps forward allowing another, older minotaur to step out. Dressed in simple worksman’s clothes you recognize it is none other than Gnym of Gnym, poet laureate of Minotaur Isle and former judge of the Taurnament of Roses!

Barkley's Tale (DM John)
Wednesday July 25th, 2018 10:18:44 PM

Falco clearly feels bad for the old warrior. The thought of having lost a purpose is almost too much to bear for his halfling mind. "Amaretto, Astedor is he just out of things to do having outlived his claws, as you say? Maybe he should be found a job he could do? We have a boat of sorts, has he done any sailing? It is clear he knows things we do not." as he speaks he begins to trail off realizing that he clearly should have discussed this with the others "Well that is just one idea, probably bad."

Amaretto shakes her head in disagreement, she softly replies to the halfling, A big heart you have for one so little. Don’t worry too much about Astedor. He has had his days and they were great ones still.”

When the poet laureate of Minotaur Isle enters Falco forgets himself a little and claps a couple of times in excitement before catching himself and going silent.

Tsak keeps an eye on the bramble, but turns most of his attention to Gnym.

Gothruk tries to hide his surprise but only partially succeeds, barely suppressing his interest in what Gnym has to say and why there is the need for secrecy.

Finnian waits in anticipation for the poet to speak.

Rolth in a dramatic aside whispers to Kiwina, "Was our battle verse so awful that he has come here personally to punish us?" then rises to honor the Master.

"Master Gnym, we are honored," greets Kiwina also rising in respect.

Sable nods to Master Gnym, ”Sorry it took awhile for everyone else to clear out, how can we help you?”

Elyas, surprised to see the 'Taur poet, and more surprised that he felt he needed to keep his presence such a secret, blurts out ”What has happened? why have you called us all together?”

Ramsey has another reaction as he drops his spoon in his cream, oblivious to the resulting splash and the words of the others. He jumps to his feet as he calls out, ”Barkley? Is that you?”

”Brother!” shouts Barkley as he rushes toward Ramsey, arms outstretched. ”I thought you were dead.” He looks around again. ”Where are the others?

Ramsey looks down. ”All are dead I am afraid. Infected by that blood plague and slain in the Sargrass. If it wasn’t for this group,” he says indicating the Petals with a gesture, ”I would have been, too.”.

After a moment the master poet, looking on with a mixed expression of sadness and surprise, interrupts the reunion, Barkley, perhaps you can reunite with your brother later. For now we have another story to tell.”

Barkley nods in agreement, remaining by his new found brother, questions for him clearly on his face.

Gnym bows lightly then proceeds ”Apologies for the subterfuge, but you can understand that my presence, were it known, would provoke some commotion that would interfere with our ability to converse privately. Tomorrow, perhaps I can indulge my celebrity, but for tonight I am a messenger.”

”It appears there is a serious problem that has been brewing to the north end of this island. An evil witch who has power over plants has been creating a new form of taurs, the brambles.” As he says this last, he nods to indicate his bodyguard and to Ramsey. ”Barkley escaped from her secret village and has told his tale to many. I eventually came across him, and unlike others he has approached, I have come to believe his tale.”

He turns to the young Taur, and gently pleas, ”Tell them your tale, young Barkley”.

The young bramble is reluctant to divert his attention from his rediscovered sibling and he appears much more comfortable with a sword than with an audience, but his devotion to his new sponsor and his cause prevails.

He clears his throat before proceeding, ”It happened a few years ago. A woman, a human named Caryln, came to our village on Minotaur Isle. She told our elders that it was our destiny to unite the fractured taurs by introducing a new, more perfect race of taurs, ones with blood strengthened by being imbued with the nature of plants.

“Many of us, including Ramsey and myself, were seduced by her promise of power and allowed ourselves to become transformed. We continued to grow in numbers and strength, then sometime after the taurnament, Caryln decided to leave Minotaur Island and led us to a secret enclave in the northern part of this island. There she continues to recruit more in pursuit of building a new race of taurs like Ramsey and me.

Gnym somberly listens as Barkley tells this story to the Petals. ”When I heard of this threat. I thought you might be able to stop it before she grows too powerful. That is why I arranged this meeting with you in the absence of other distractions. Are you willing to travel to the hostile side of the island and confront the growing threat?”

She's a witch (DM John)
Thursday July 26th, 2018 9:06:50 PM

Tsak immediately begins thinking about preparing for the mission.

Gnym smiles as Sable offers him some dessert. ”You obviously do not know Amaretto very well if you think she would neglect the palate of anyone under her roof,” he replies as he shakes his head.

"Ramsey, are you unhappy with the way you are?" Kiwina asks.

Ramsey wrinkles his bramble brow in thought. After much consideration, he responds, ”No. I'm okay with the way I am.”

Kiwina then asks Barkley, "What was this Caryln doing with her recruits? Did she talk about her plans?"

”She didn’t go into much detail,” responds the other bramble. ”She did mention avenging her prince, but I don’t know who that is.” He thinks some more, his brow wrinkling identically to the way Ramsey’s did, then exclaims, ”Wait! You guys call yourself the Petals! She says she was going to get you one way of the other. Unfortunately, she didn’t say how.”

Rolth agrees that this sounds like a job for the Eight Petaled Rose. Turning to Barkley and Gnym, "What more can you tell us of her location, defenses, and powers?"

Gnym turns to the bramble indicating he should answer. ”She is restoring an old ruined complex to serve as her stronghold. It’s located near the village of Kaga which is remotely located near the coast on the northern edge of the island. To get there from here you would go through the territory of the of Ag clan. From there it is 6 miles east to Kaga on the coast.

“As far as powers go, she is able to control plants and she makes a magic potion that produces the bramble transformation. That’s how she made Ramsey and me.”

Falco asks, "It does not seem she holds undue sway over those she transforms or, Ramsey. Are you and your brother outliers? I would hate having to battle those who were transformed if they are not in control."

Ramsey responds, ”She is very persuasive. When I left with the others, I was fully convinced I was doing the right thing, but now I see she is cruel and spiteful. Was it magic, I don’t know. I think I could resist her now, but I am not sure.”

Barkley adds, ”She uses both words and spells. I’ve seen her force brambles to her will with magic. I think I was under some sort of enchantment myself, but somehow I managed to break it. That’s when I fled and went for help.” His expression turned somber, ”That was right after I was told that Ramsey was dead.”

Gothruk exclaims ”I knew too many plants were giving me weird looks! And think about all the ones that have tried to eat us! Any of the could have been working for this witch. That being said, it doesn't seem like she's really done anything wrong. It seems you were willingly turned into half-plants. And if she's keeping to herself then I don't see why we need to go over there and cause trouble. What happens if she turns US into plants, we really will be an eight petaled rose!”

”You’re wrong, says Barkley softly. She is bent on turning others to her will. I have seen her kill or have killed those who oppose her.”

Elyas asks, ”So Ramsey, you know of this witch? Are you willing to fight with us against the one who created you? If you are not, there is no shame in sitting this one out. And more to the point, does she have the ability to control the minds of the Taurs she has converted? We wouldn't want you to lose your faculties in the middle of a fight…”

Ramsey shudders. ”Although I am content with what I now am. I wouldn’t force it on another against their will. Though I thought I willingly chose to become what I am, I am not certain it truly was of my own free will. I will fight her, if you will have me.” He rises, heedless of the splattered cream dropping from his clothes, a proud look of resolve on his thorny brow.

Finnian chimes in, "I agree to help stop this witch. She is using plants for her own twisted gain. There is a time and a place to meld with nature but it seems like this woman is exploiting nature for herself. We saw what happened when those brambles began loosing their minds. Does the local druidic circle know about her goings on? I must speak with them to find out what they would have me do.”

Gnym, Barkley, and Ramey nod in agreement, but do not appear to know the answer to Finnian’s question.

Gnym considers the heroes for a moment before asking, "Is it agreed? Will you deal with this Caryln?"

"I'm in! Good show, Ramsey! We have heard of this witch before, have we not? During the Taurnament, we entered a re-creation of her Garden. In the Green Book that we gained from Jaynce at Scribner University, she was described as a bloodwitch with powers related to plants. She used these powers to punish a Prince of Farungia who had spurned her love. He was afraid of fire, if I recall correctly. Can someone check the Green Book now, to see what more it might tell us about her, and about the Prince? On a related note, did anyone else catch what Captain Cecil said about being cursed? He travels through several more shades of green as he remembers telling that story of how he slew the hedge creature to anyone who would listen for days afterwards.

Final words at the Roost (DM John)
Saturday July 28th, 2018 12:53:16 PM

Rolth exclaims, "I'm in! Do you think that he might somehow be this Prince? Or is it a different curse?"

"Also, Sir Gnym, do you know ought else that could help us, perhaps information gained as you researched the Garden to make the Taurnament challenge?"

Kiwina responds, “"How quickly should we face this Caryln? We have met dryads on Minotaur and Centaur Isles, have we not, yet we do not know one here. We should seek allies and information if time permits. And yes, Finnian, the druids should be among them." He thinks the book may be on the ship.

Kiwina recalls seeing the green book, but Sable actually has it.

Elyas proposes finding out more, "We should see if we can gather any more information. If she is newly arrived here on this island the locals probably don't know of her. Perhaps this Ag clan might have seen more of her preparations? are they friendly?

Gothruk is wowed by Rolth’s memory and himself recalls destroying a minotaurian hedge creature.

Tsak is a bit leery and sees a rose tapping on the window. Tsak perception DC 10 Highlight to display spoiler: {It’s not a rose. It’s something much bigger!}
Tsak if perception check beats 15 Highlight to display spoiler: {It’s Boffo! Apparently he is eavesdropping.}

Gnym looks at Rolth speculatively. “Impressive memory for detail,” he comments after a moment. “Have you consider taking up storytelling? Your tale of the Charge of the Dark Brigade showed considerable promise and will very likely be a part of many a bard’s repertoire.”

“Regarding your question: you seem to have captured most of what there is to know already.”

Amaretto, quiet until know, speaks up, “The Ag clan are hard warriors, but will be unhappy to hear someone has settled in their territory. They may prove good allies provided they are approached tactfully.

Gnym adds in, “There is a village named Pym on the edge of Ag territory. I hear tell it is settled by mino-liontaurs. I suggest you stop there for assistance. I am sure they will receive the Eight Petaled Rose favorably.” He pauses for a moment, then apparently recalls something else, “I have picked up rumors that she is hiring mercenaries to advance her cause. For now, nothing is substantiated, but it is worth be alert to.

Gnym looks at you warmly. He is obviously tired, but willing to spend as much time answering any further questions the Petals may have.

[As far as you know there is nothing time critical about going to confront Caryln, though she is probably growing in influence as time passes. Feel free to describe what you wish to accomplish before you depart.

Other questions to address: Do you wish Ramsey to come along? Barkley? How will you make the journey?]

"I must admit that I was inspired by your own work, sir, and hope to one day measure up in worthiness! I have already begun my studies on this path, and shall not flag."

With respect to the journey, Rolth thinks that our path will depend on several factors. "Is the village of Pym also on the coast? And is this ruin we are headed for on the plains or up in the hills? Either bit of information might help us determine whether to go by land, or take the Rose by sea. A third option would be to take the Rose up the river to the east, then set out overland. If we take the ship by either path, Ramsey and Barkley would be handy. Speaking of the ship, can it traverse land here, or only in the Sargrass? Finally, I think I want to go shopping one more time before we go. I need to upgrade some of my own gear, but is there also anything we ought to be buying as a group?"

"Actually, Master Gnym, a map might help. I supose we should find one in the morning," Kiwina says. "Rolth, I don't think we should take the Rose overland. We have seen her floating here, but we have no experience in her with terrains other than Sargrass, and she is not inconspicuous. In fact, we don't know how her magic makes her handle water. I am sure Ramsey and Barkley would be handy in any case, but it is my feeling that we should not trust the Rose to any but Ramsey. He has proven himself. In fact, we should talk about wages."

"Amaretto, how do you suggest we approach the Ag?"

Kiwina proposes seeking information from the WLA and the druids in the morning, as well as finding a map.

I think conversing with the Druids would be a good idea, this corruption of nature, tampering with the natural order of things is what they hate most. I don't think they would appreciate taur-plant hybrids and even if they don't directly aid us by sending order members to help us, they might offer to fund or give gifts.

As for how we approach the castle we still need to test how to boat navigates through different environments. Wether it can crest hills like a normal boat would waves, or if it's magic will cause it to hover above water. There's a lot we don't know

Roost - part 2
Monday July 30th, 2018 7:50:24 PM

Rolth is momentarily stunned by the praise from the Poet Laureate. He quickly recovers his wits, and thanks the Master for his compliment. "I must admit that I was inspired by your own work, sir, and hope to one day measure up in worthiness! I have already begun my studies on this path, and shall not flag."

Gymn dismisses his compliment kindly. “I’ve had my day, no need to compliment. It’s the young ones that will carry the touch with their words.”
He then continues, “A map. Amaretto do you have that map?” She shuffled some papers and shook her head no.
“Dang, my age makes things so much for difficult.”
Ramsey speaks up. “We don’t need a map when we have me. I know where we are going. That village is on the coast. We could sail the Rose East of here then North. Should take us a couple hours at the most. With the wind against us. The Rose is still floating so we could float over the island but I think that would be unwise and would be destructive, just my opinion. I’m not sure how it will make it up the mountains North of here. But you Petals are the boss. I owe you all my life.”
“Walking is always an option but I’m not sure I would be able to join you for most of that trip. I can’t exactly leave the ship without any stares and trouble brewing. If that is the case I can sail and meet you in Pym.”

Barkley waited for Ramsey to stop talking and declined to go along, due to the tensions built up in the islands already. He attempts to hug his brother but it becomes awkward when vines begin to tangle and he just slaps him on the shoulder.

Amaretto thinks for a moment then replies to Kiwina’s query. “The Ag tribe are very transient. They do not stay in one place very long. It’s quite possible you will not run across them but, that said, they are very territorial and very close. I’d expect them to be quite irritated at the actions of the witch and the presence of the Bramble.”

The Green Book mentions very little new information about Carlyn and her spurned love, the Prince. It does mention that it was hearsay and no one had ever seen Carlyn. It does mention Carlyn’s pension for cruelty and command of people under her.

Tsak finds Boffo staring through the window listening.
Falco is excited and Gothruk is behind the idea of talking to the Druids.

"Ah, good Ramsey, you speak wisely. I like this plan of sailing over the water. It is as the famous sea captain, Sir Frantic Rake, quoth, 'It is not that life ashore is distasteful to me. But life at sea is better.' By sailing, we can perhaps avoid things that might weaken us on the way, and save our best for yon witch. And I agree that it might be best not to test our ability to fly over the mountains! But first, we should do as Gothruk suggests and see what more information the druids or others can provide. It looks to be about noon so we do have time to head out today but we could also head out tomorrow. That would give you time to seek out the druids.”

“Amaretto lets find the map maker tonight and get this done. That is, if your willing to help me.”
“Of course,” Amaretto says with a smile then realizes that Boffo is trolling outside the window.
“Boffo is half deaf. He skulks around all the time. I’m not sure why he does that. He cannot hear a thing. He is a special case, and is harmless I assure you. I have been taking care of him since we were young ones.”
After Tsak snarls at Boffo, he scurries away knocking over a vendors cart of fruit. The liontaur growled. Boffo stumbled over some words that you could not hear but seemed to straighten out any dispute.

“Druids?” Ameretto shoots suddenly. “I know a druid… um… named Luven. He lives with the Wexor clan. It’s North of the club about 200 feet. You will notice it when you see the Great Mane and sword crest.

[spoiler=Rolth]" So these druids are somewhat my people, I guess, not quite... But as you've seen I'm somewhat, well, I'm not as eloquent with words as you are. I know there language, but, well, as is plain to see, or hear, you've a way with words that I lack. When I inevitably stumble over my words will you help me convey my message... Better. Rolth I want to impress, but I'm worried that I'm not very impressive..." Finnian stumbles through the whole interaction and it's clear that there is a mixture of excitement and nervousness. Is there anything in particular that Finnian knows about this clan or Luven? I don't have Knowledge local but He likely knows something. He didn't get his first level of druid here, I don't believe, but he did atleast get his second. Also I'll be checking out the wiki to be prepared for the next post.

Questions at noon
Wednesday August 1st, 2018 7:42:05 PM

The afternoon moves quickly as you talk to the druids of the Wexor clan. The liontaur cleric tribe was sequestered in a large stone building, just large enough to fit 5 liontaur.
Luven greats you warmly and introduces you to the others. The other druids bowed but said nothing.
“They have taken a vow of silence,” Luven advises. “I am kinda the spokesperson because I choose to speak. First a question, do you choose to stand with that vile Bramble? The brothers and I are concerned for your safety. Have you heard what they did in the North? They are invading… are you here to help the island stop them? We are generous and all but these are not taurs, they are certainly not a noble race.”

The only thing that Rolth can recall about the Ag clan is there vast territory in the North of the island. They are a nomadic tribe that never stays in one place too long. They are not known for their patience with any creature not liontaur.

Kiwina is asked a simular question at the WLA chapter house but in more of statement. “You stand with the Bramble. Do you stand with all the Bramble? Word is they are destroying Liontaur island with their prickle whips and whatever other mutant abilities they have…”
The liontaur speaking waited for a response but soon searched the books for information.
He returned with a old book and read from it. Pym is a mino-liontaur hamlet within territory patrolled by the Ag clan. Pym serves as a fishing village for the clan.
Another liontaur steps in and speaks. “There are mercenaries in the North. This is what I’ve heard. If you are going to fight the Brambles watch your back.”
Tsak talks to the sailors but they seem to be even more salty than usual. Ramsey seems to bring out the worst in the taurs. Rumors of the Brambles, hybrid children and a grumbles of taurdom. The non-taurs are very curious about the plant hybrid.

She is the real problem—if we can cut her out, I think many of the brambles can be brought to the side of light. Let’s not forget that we Taurs are also seeking to regain our own noble status! The mercenaries will go back wherever they came from of the witch is gone too. And yes, we do intend to move north to deal with this problem directly. Although please keep that to yourselves, because the witch may have spies even here in Chessford. With her vile magicks, she is able to dupe good folk or bend them to her will. And yes, we will watch our backs, and fronts for that matter.". (Diplomacy = 19, plus one if they revere Domi and plus one if they are a noble race.)

Tsak is disappointed with his efforts among the sailors, and particularly their attitude toward Ramsey. He decides to head back to the Rose and is making his way there when he notices a bit of a commotion.
A group of sailors appear to have some sort of animal backed into a corner. On closer inspection he notices that it is a spotted yellow cat. Who knows how it got there? Escaped cargo off a ship, lost in the storm? It seems large for a house cat. The sailors blame it for stealing fish and seem intent on killing it. Without really knowing why Tsak pushes his way thru, grabs the cat and continues on making his way back to the boat.

We saved Ramsay's life from the bloodgrass not so long ago, and since then his has treated us as friends. He has had opportunities to harm as and has not. I do not consider him a threat.

A vow of silence? How does that help them in their studies, I don't know very much about druids.

As you said, they are invading we could use assistance in dealing with them. I feel with the battle of bloodgrass plain in such recent memory that we should be able to be trusted that any resorces entrusted to us will be well spent.

Diplomacy to assist Rolth = 9 (no benefit)

Gothruk's comment makes Elyas think of something.

"My kind of magic is much different than that of the druids, so forgive my question. but how does a druid cast his or her spells without being able to say anything?"

In Druidic
Highlight to display spoiler: {"Greetings Luven, I am Finnian. I recently took up the druidic path and am a novice in your beliefs and customs. I thank you for seeing us. Might I ask if you or the Wexor druids belong to any specific druidic circle, or if there are any greenmages among you"}
He dips his head slightly and continues in common [b]"It is true we travel with Ramsey, a Bramble, but as the others have said, he has been nothing but helpful and has agreed to aid us in eliminating the real threat this Bloodwitch. We come to you for guidance and knowledge."

That's a 9 for Diplomacy :(

Night approaches
Thursday August 2nd, 2018 8:01:51 PM

The Petals bravely defend Ramsey
Luven turns as one of the other druid hands him a potion. “Ah, this makes sense.”
To Gothruk in response to his question.
“Speaking can be a distraction. The act of staying silent deepens our spiritualism.”
"My kind of magic is much different than that of the druids, so forgive my question. but how does a druid cast his or her spells without being able to say anything?" says Gothruk.
“I can see how that would be a problem,” Luven chuckles. “We choose not to fight and use spells. But… but… the vow is a choice. We can choose to stop.”
To Finnian, Highlight to display spoiler: { There are no greenmages in this circle. It’s only us. We stand out from other druids.}
“I apologize if we sound cruel but most of Chessford is frightened. We are not warriors. Before you depart. Allow me to give you this. He then hands the Petals a potion of diminish plants. There is a large bramble wall surrounding Kaga. This should help you over that obstacle.”

Having stayed on the boat Falco completes his contemplation of magic and life in general and decides he really has little to do at this point. With the others off making plans his melancholy really takes hold. To combat that he spends some time slowly climbing around in the rigging to familiarize himself more with the boat.

Luven offers dinner as night approaches. Where do you stay the night, in the Rose or somewhere else? What else do you collect for the trip?

Thursday August 2nd, 2018 8:25:47 PM

Before leaving the WLA, Kiwina explains that Ramsey and one other have escaped the control of the witch who leads the brambles in the north, and now stand against her. The Petals are going to investigate what she is doing, and -- if the rumors are true -- will likely oppose her. He thanks the wemics there for the information.

Kiwina prefers to stay the night on board the Rose. When the others return, he tells them what he has learned, and suggests that Ramsey and his brother stay out of sight when the group is on the north side of the island.

Rolth suggests that the Petals chip in for some provisions for the trip. He is also planning to make one last trip the Catacombs. To the others, "does anyone recall weaknesses of the bad brambles? Do I recall that they were vulnerable to fire?"

He will also retrieve his rowboat, which the villagers had been using during reconstruction, so that the Rose has a small boat to use as needed. He is a little bit embarrassed that his visage is carved on the figurehead, and it has his name on each side. But maybe a little proud too ;)

Tsak gets back to the Rose with the feline still tucked under his arm.
He gets some meat jerky from his pack and feeds the hungry animal.
On closer inspection he notices that whilst large for a house cat, it still looks like a kitten.
He rustles up a bowl to put some water in and sits down to contemplate this latest development.
A strong desire to communicate with this and perhaps other animals comes over the half-orc.
His thoughts turn deeper inward and he finds himself meditating on the connection between himself and the cat.
He turns his gaze to find calm green eyes staring back at him and a word comes to him: Esmeralda

Gothruk thanks the druids for the potion, getting them to explain how to use it.

Also do you think it's possible to get a few more of these apon our return. If we find any more bloodgrass or other vegetable menaces it could be quite useful.

Gothruk will be happy to dine with the Druids telling Rolth to inform the others where he'll be. He'll discuss and debate with the speaker druid on matters of spirituality and meditation. He'll also be sure to thank the druids for the gift again before he leaves to return to the Rose when it's late.

Morning!!

The WLA taurs nod and wish Kiwina well and safe travels.
The Petals head back for the night.
Rolth suggests that the Petals chip in for some provisions for the trip. He is also planning to make one last trip the Catacombs. To the others, "does anyone recall weaknesses of the bad brambles? Do I recall that they were vulnerable to fire?"
He will also retrieve his rowboat.
Tsak brings home a pet.
Falco searches for the others and hopes to head out to dinner.

Gothruk thanks the druids for the potion, getting them to explain how to use it.
The Luven says sudden. “Oh my that is not the write label. Ugh. Let me find the right one. Her it is. An Anything potion.”
“I’m so sorry for the confusion. The potion works like this. You choose the effect when you drink it! It has to be a thing that works as a potion. So for example, you could dribble one into a friend's mouth as a Stabilize potion, or you could drink one yourself as a Guidance potion or a Taur's Try potion, any cantrip in the game, at caster level 1.”
Also do you think it's possible to get a few more of these upon our return. If we find any more bloodgrass or other vegetable menaces it could be quite useful.
“Sorry, only have one of these,” he says and disappears to prepare dinner.

The dinner with the druids was delicious as they offered a smorgasbord of food. The Rose is waiting at the end of the night. Ramsey, the nice guy that he is, found fresh bedding for everyone. Morning comes quickly and Ramsey stands at the wheel with a map pinned to a table beside him. “Look at what I got,” he says proudly.

Rolth clarifies that with respect to gear for the trip, he just meant making sure that we have plenty of food and water, and other such basic necessities. We might only intend to make a short trip, but who knows what the sea will bring! He has now completed his trip to the Catacombs, and is ready to travel.

On board he looks at the map with Kiwina. "I'm no sailor, but I do know terrain, perhaps I can help to plan a course?" Finnian says and points to a few key landmarks on the map. He also looks to the sky to help determine what sort of weather conditions they might expect.

As is habit Falco rises early and prepares his spells for the day. He takes some time thinking about what might be most effective on a boat during the process but realizes he has no idea. Glitterdust is always a winner I guess, might as well go with that.

Up on deck he watches the others work and tries to help where he can, {ooc: I need to up some points in sailor I think.}
