Kiwina (Steve M) (40/40 HP | AC:14; Touch:11; Flat:12; CMD:17) | Status: Injured
Thursday March 8th, 2018 9:53:40 PM

"I think we should stick together," Kiwina says. "Which way do you want to head? I suggest Gothruk lead us towards what he heard."

Sable (Don) ( HP 29/31| AC: 15/17; Touch: 11; Flat: 13/15; CMD: 19) | Status:   d8+1=4 ; d8+1=5 ; d8+1=3 ;
Friday March 9th, 2018 2:14:42 AM

Sable takes the wand and takes three charges, healing for a total of 12 up to 29 out of 31 and hands it back. Sable will contribute 100 GP towards its purchase. He then draws his greatsword and will take point (OOC - I will provide a link to my updated character sheet once item procurements are resolved).

Elyas (Ben A.) (29/29 HP | AC: 13; Touch:13; Flat: 10; CMD:15) | Light Crossbow +4( 1D8, 19-20) | Status:N  d20+4=23 ;
Friday March 9th, 2018 5:51:24 AM

Elyas will also contribute 100gp towards the wand purchase.

He looks around as best as he can in the tall grass, looking for a tree, or visible high ground, or any other way to get above the grass and figure out what direction to go next. Perception = 23.

OOC - Is there any way to cut or burn our way through the grass to help alleviate the movement and/or sight penalties? Elyas has a bit of fire damage, but not a ton.

If no one knows where we are, perhaps we should just pick a direction and trust in fate to get us where we need to go?

Rolth Niheow (BatMark) (25/28 HP | AC: 14; Touch: 11; CMD: 19) | Morningstar +5 1d8+4 x2 | Paws (2) +3 1d4+1 x2| Status: None   d20+10=28 ;
Friday March 9th, 2018 6:47:30 AM

Rolth offers to boost one of the smaller Petals up to take a look out over the surface of the sea of grass. He will also train his sharp ears to see if he can pick up on whatever Gothruk briefly heard. (Perception = 28) Unless those efforts yield some clues, he agrees that they should head in the direction of the sound that Gothruk heard, moving slowly and carefully to avoid injury from the grass.

(OOC: My current HP total is correct, 25 of 28, sorry for the mistakes one of my earlier headers. Also Rolth will chip in 100gp for the CLW wand that Kiwina bought for the party.)

Finnian hands Kiwina a stack of coims (125). "That was quite the smart purchase, it should be of great benefit to us all" he says and then turns to Rolth. "Here, boost me up. Perhaps I'll be able to see more from up there.[Perception=20,Survival=17]. Looking for trails or tracks that we could follow.

(DM - Reflex Save: 18 - if you beat then then you can walk through it without taking a -1 HP) (DM: Updated post - cannot destroy grass)
(Note: There may be other ways to head through the grass that do not involve trying to destroy it.)
Finninan volunteers to take a better look after a boost from one of the Taurs. He is able to see a huge field of colored grasses. To the East is the mast of a boat, this is at least one-hundred feet away. North, are Crystal Mountains, several miles away. West, is the top of several cross-hatched homes. These homes are closest at fifty feet from you The last thing you notice is that the sun seems to be stuck a little after noon.
If you are a centaur or a liontaur you are able to confirm the mast on the East side.
If you are not then a quick search near you reveals 14 slants of wood hidden within the grass. (Reflex Save: 18 - 1 roll per round)

Rolth says, "Ohhh, very clever, Sable!" Then noticing the masts, the sailor in him is instantly intrigued. "What would a ship be doing out here in a sea of grass." "Wait! Sea. Of. Grass. How cool would it be if this dense mass of grass really were a sea, and that ship could actually cross it? Why else would it be here? I want to go that way and check it out!"

Elyas watches with interest as Sable tries to use the boards to split the grass. That's a great idea! slow going, but if it means getting through without hurting ourselves it's perfect

He listens to the report from thos that can see over the grasses.

It seems to me we should head for the buildings. If there are people living there they could give us information or even point us in the direction of a Rapkes. if nothing else, it's the closest option.

I agree with Finnian that we check out the huts, hopefully the ships will wait till later. Can those boards be tied to our feet? Would that help in getting thru the grass more quickly, maybe something like snow shoes? Let's check the huts and see how the natives use them.

It seems that more people want to go towards the houses than the boat. Since that is closer and will likely have information on the boat if there is anyone there, He'll start leading the group in that direction, using the planks to spread the grass out of or path. (Assuming that works.)
Otherwise we'll be moving half speed.
He'll also keep an eye out for what he might have seen before.

Finnian asks if the boards can be tied to your feet and votes to head to the buildings.
Elyas, Tsak, Falco and Finnian talk of heading to the buildings.

Kiwina wonders if the noises came from near the ship but whatever is making the noise seems to be beside the group. Perception vs DC 13 Highlight to display spoiler: { A second simular noise. It’s a rustling within the grasses from the opposite side. (Perception DC 25) to figure out what it is… }

Rolth Niheow wants to head toward the ship.

Gothruk votes to head to the houses and begins to weave his way through the grass. The grass is thick and tall. It’s easier to use the planks but it doesn’t help you move much faster. (Reflex Save DC 18 to travel through the grasses without issue.)
-- The tall grass falls under the 3-foot long plank of wood, leaving a 2-foot wide path.

Tsak scans the huts, noting they are quite tall and also that they are partially dug in, whether to house taurs or for defense isn't immediately obvious. It must mean that it rains very little here, because they would fill with water easily.

He also see's a wide path thru the grass leading North toward the mountains and decides to keep a lookout in that direction whilst Kiwina establishes cordial relations with the natives.

Elyas notices the path cut into the grass leading away from the village and points it out to the others. Looks like someone has cut through the grass, which means it has likely been here for some time, not as new as the grass we saw in our island.

He will move up with the group, watching for movement coming from behind them in the grass while the more diplomatic members try to make contact with any residents.

The shouting seems to of scared off whatever creatures were stalking the Petals. The really perceptive members of the group can confirm that.
Falco and Finnian take a couple pieces of the grass laying in the pile as the others inspect the home. Finnian finds that the blades of grass in the pile are the same as the grass weaved within the thatched roofs. Finnian finds this is Steel grass. The grass has been known to have many helpful properties in weapons and armor.
The shouting does scare up a new commotion within the first home. Several items fell and crashed. The noise sounds like the pitter patter of little feet.. A few of them.

Sable finds a large group of large humanoid tracks leaving the homes and heading out toward the ship. They tracks seem to be of what knocked down the path in the grass. After some further inspection they look like minotaur tracks.
Gothruk looks inside the closest home. The large door creaks slowly as it opens under its own weight.

Several large rats scatter as you get a full view of the scene within the home.

Once Gothruk leaves the doorway it leaves the bloody scene in view of the others. The scene shows a minotaur plant hybrid lying upon the room floor. The room was a mess and a large fight had broken out.

Sable emerging from the hut spots the Tatzlewurm ”What are you doing here? You are not normally found on the plains...” he says then notices that this wurm’s color is the same as the grass, as if it is a variant native here. He prepares for combat.

Kiwina can't figure out whether to root for the tatzlwurm or the bramble minotaurs. Probably one of the groups of minotaurs, and possibly the group that is down. He hesitates, waiting to see how the minotaurs react to the Petals.

Rolth suffers no doubt and charges recruit 7, swinging wide.

Unsure who the good guys are (if there are any) Tsak sights his crossbow at the recruit that Rolth has charged. Unfortunately the bolt narrowly misses the taur and disappears into the long grass beside the path.

Elyas pulls up as they see the battle unfolding in front of them, with the infected taurs seeming to be coming out on top. “Watch out! there's another Tatzlewyrm in the grass!” he cries as he sees the other wurm.

Tsak reloads another bolt, sights along the cross bow and lets fly at Bramble 3, and misses yet again.

Rolth takes 5 foot step toward the ship, and switches his attacks to Recruit 8, who he flanks with the wurm. His glaive swings wide, but one of his paws lands.

Kiwina makes his full attack sequence on Recruit 3, but does not succeed in landing a blow.

Elyas reloads and fires again at recruit 3 just misses!

Sable moves and tries to takes advantage of Recruit 4 being blinded, but his shot goes wide..

Finnian moves to the edge of the grass and lines up a shot on the sergeant (sgt 1) hitting for 6 points damage.

Gothruk will flurry of blows Recruit 3, however he misses all attacks.

Having blinded a couple of the creatures Falco summons a small acid dart and fires it at recruit 4, successfully hitting it. He expresses remorse at having to kill the infected taurs.

Sergeant 1 attacks the wurm and misses with both attacks.

Recruit 2 hits tazlwurm 2 with his glaive but it barely penetrates its tough hide (damage 1)

Recruit 3 tears into Kiwina with its glaive and its horns (for a total of 9 damage), but fails to latch on. Make a FORTITUDE save DC 19 or become infected.

Recruit 4 manages to recover his eyesight, but flails wildly before doing so.

Brigand 6 misses with both attacks against tatzlwurm 1.

Recruit 8, flanking with Brigand 6, is able to gore the tatzlwurm barely harming it, but he is able to grapple the wurm, bringing it tight against his thorny flesh.

TW1 tries to reverse the grapple with Recruit 8, almost succeeds, but the taur maintains control.

TW2 viciously bites recruit 2, ripping its throat out.

The remaining Brigand 6 swings his long sword at the grappled tatzlwurm 1. Despite the serpent's tough hide, the sword cuts deep. The bramble taur then crushes the remaining life out of it with its thorny grasp. The tatzlwurm thrashes wildly in its death throes while the brigand grimly maintains his death grip.

TW2 lets out an anguished scream sounding like a multitude of tuneless french horns as it rushes to its fallen fellow wurm. Sable and Rolth may take attacks of opportunity if they desire.

The recruit sneers at the Petals as they gather around him. He notices the tatzlewurm and the Petals all heading toward him. He withdraws just before the tatzlewurm has a chance to attack. He takes a defensive stance which he holds weakly. The hunger rages within him as bodies lay all around him.

The tatzlewurm avoids any of the Petals. The dragon-like creature examines the body of his friend then, oddly ignoring the brigand, heads toward the ship to examine the remains of the other Brambles. At the ship are four uninfected Bramble but two are dead and the other two are barely able to move. One of them painfully shifts to get more comfortable. The tatzlewurm reacts, striking the minotaur, ending its life.

The other, nearly blinded by its wounds, pleads with the tatzlewurm for mercy.

Tsak fires again, but his hands feel wooden and he misses his target as well.

Despite being weakened, Kiwina manages to land an attack though it does little damage.

Sable moves toward the ship, fires and misses. HE then takes a look at the ship. To his sailor’s eye, it appears to be in fine shape.

He notices peculiarly that it does not actually rest on the ground, but rather rests on top of the sargrass, almost as if it is floating on it.

Elyas again fires on the fleeing bramble, but just misses it.
[OOC: Rolth’s action makes the range/position issue irrelevant.]

Rolth, determined that the last remaining diseased taur not escape to cause further infection, makes a liontaur charge and attacks the poor bramble, tearing it apart. His glaive rests on the ground where he dropped it during combat.

Falco tries to distract the tatzlwurm from the helpless but undiseased taur with a casting of ghost sound. The tatzlwurm looks in the direction of the false sound of approaching brambles, but turns its attention back to the true bramble before it. The distraction, however, is sufficient to give Gothruk the opening he needs.

Gothruk moves around the Tatzlwurm interposing himself between the wurm and the injured Taur. Ready to trip it, he realizes the legless creature would be immune; nonetheless, he effectively blocks it--at least temporarily.

The Tatzlewym hisses, its long tapered tongue flickering between the dagger-like teeth as it raises its head up high off the ground, attempting, but not quite succeeding, in raising raise itself to Gothruk’s height.

It seems reluctant to strike the minotaur, but the glint in its yellow eye is not kindly. It does not appear that it will stay placid for long...

Though seriously wounded, the flow of sap from the bramble’s injuries is slowing down. The relieved expression on his face is obvious as he realizes Tsak is trying to help.

Rolth releases his rage. Winded, he recovers his weapon.

Elyas and Gothruk await the outcome of the diplomatic efforts, ready to intercede physically if needed.

Kiwina avoids further combat. He inspects the ship, but is distracted by the symptoms of his infection to notice very much.

Finnian, Sable, and Falco attempt to reason with the tatzlewurm.

The wurm ignores all attempts at intercession, alternatingly glaring at Gothruk and the minotaur’s ward, until Falco begins speaking in draconic. When the halfling switches to the ancient tongue, however, the wurm turns its unblinking gaze to the little wizard. It tilts its head as if contemplating his words. Then without warning, it eases its coils and withdraws toward the bow of the ship, no longer threatening the injured bramble.

Falco warmly thanks the departing wurm for its protection of this realm from the diseased things afflicted upon it. If the fellow seems a trustworthy sort and inclined to cooperate, he will ask where in this land one might find a rapkes.

Rolth congratulates Falco on his effective, if unintelligible, parley with the wurm, then joins Sable in exploring the ship, which is truly a wonder if it can float on this sea of grass. He starts trying to figure out how it might work, and how if might be different than a normal ship of the sea, without yet actually doing anything to make it move. Sargrass Plains- Grass Ship - DM Matt and John - 36 hr clock
Monday April 2nd, 2018 9:07:21 PM

The bodies are all armored similar to the Bramble you found in the homes. The infection is the same that may be still infecting the party. (OOC: Did you guys cure everyone?)

There are eleven bodies total with the twelfth cowering on the ground beneath you.

Inspection of the ship revealed a perfectly healthy floating ship within the tall grass.
There were some obvious differences in this ship then a sea floating craft. For one, there is a door a few feet up from the bottom of the boat. A set of stairs leading up. The other difference is it floats five feet from the ground. --

The remaining Bramble is a young recruit. He tells the Petals that his group of Brambles was attacked out of nowhere on Minotaur Island by some local creatures. “It was the oddest thing,” he added. “We then stumbled on a portal, spoke to an old Manfri then he sent us here. We ended up near that abandoned village over there. Found out that was a home to what is called “Tall men” Frightening creatures but never met one.. Thank the gods.. Anyways. We were investigating when my team became overwhelmed with this sickness and became insane. It hit our First Sergeant first. He attacked the others and we had to kill him. Then the majority of the team began to fall apart. I’m not sure what happened, but it must of been the blood.. Like I said.. I don’t know.. None of this makes any sense.

‘Our goal was this ship in the grass. We never made it on board. That is a a shame because I am a mighty good sailor. Suddenly, he realized, “How am I going to get home! The uninfected Brambles like me ran like cowards. That must be why they killed us. Cowards do not stand long…”
“Why did you save me, take my life. I am a coward.” He drops his head in shame.

In total the five Recruits had (1) alchemist's fire; 5 chainmail, 5 heavy wooden shield, (2) +1 battleaxes, 3 glaives, (1) light crossbow with 20 bolts, 60 gp

In total the two Brigands had: (2) potions of remove disease , (10) masterwork arrows, (2) tanglefoot bags, (2) thunderstones; (2) leather armor, +1 composite longbow (+4 strength) with 20 arrows, (1) composite longbow (+2 strength) with 20 arrows; (2) longswords, and (2) saps

The sergeant had a chain shirt, (3) javelins, masterwork guisarme, masterwork longsword, manacles,

All weapons, armor, manacles, and shields are large size.

The tatzlewurm slowly paces back and forth about twenty feet in front of the ship’s bow. It occasionally pauses to glance at the party and then resumes its pacing.

(Profession: Sailor=26)
Tsak is inclined to believe the recruit and, whilst he can't condone cowardice, he can easily see how having your team turn on itself in an unknown world facing goodness know's what could cause the undoing of any sane creature.
I guess we gather the gear, board the ship and sail these green 'seas' looking for adventure, and a Rapkes! I think we should invite this recruit to stay with us. I'll have a look over the ship and see if I can figure out how it works (Sailor 26).
Who wants to talk this over with the wyrm?

Tuesday April 3rd, 2018 7:05:03 AM

Rolth agrees with Sable and Tsak that we should gather the loot and carefully bury the dead, without getting blood or other causes of infection on us, before setting out to sail. "But which way should we go?" He has no objection to Kiwina using the potion to stave off the disease.

(OOC: Don, I think the bow is already the right size--from the DM post "All weapons, armor, manacles, and shields are large size.")

Falco (BatMark subbing for Ryan)

Falco climbs aboard the ship, and calls out to the wurm in Draconic, "Are you trying to get us to follow you? If so, please know that we are on a quest for a rapkes. We need one's claw in order to play our part in a ritual to banish this foul infestation from the Wold. Would you help us in this quest?"

[OOC: Roll to see if it cures the disease. To succeed you must succeed on 1d20 + caster level against a DC 20. The caster level for these potions is 9, so roll an 11 or higher.]

Tsak believes the recruit and sets to figuring out how to sail the vessel.

He realizes it sails like any sailing vessel of its type, except on grass rather than water. Even the anchor seems to function the same as a seafaring ship, but with a much shorter cable.

Sable claims the +1 large sized composite longbow (strength +4)
[OOC: the bow is large size and allows the wielder to add +4 of their strength modifier to damage. Note that if someone with a strength modifier less than +4 attempts to use it, they cannot pull it back and fire it.]

Elyas spends little time looking through the supplies, as clearly none of these taurs were spellcasters.

Rolth, Sable, Gothruk, and Tsak load the loot on the ship and care for the dead before setting out to sail.

Falco climbs aboard calls out to the Wurm in draconic.

While the Petals are attending to their tasks, the tatzlewurm continues to pace before the bow of the ship, occasionally pausing to glance in their direction before resuming its restless motion.

At some point during your preparations the recruit speaks up, “Please, don’t leave me here.” He says while scratching his back furiously. “I will gladly help you sail this ship. I know her well.”

“I don’t want to be picked up by Sargrass pirates that roam around in their floating ships looking for merchants and people to pick up.”

The recruit smiles. “Just kidding. I have not seen any pirates.. Unless you have?”

When Falco speaks in Draconic, the wurm’s attention is captured again. When Falco finishes speaking, it sets off at a heading slightly port of straight ahead. After going about ten paces it turns to look at the ship.

It seems to be wanting to lead you somewhere. Do you trust it?

“Did you say rapke?” interjects the recruit, reacting to a word Falco used that is the same in Common as well as Draconic. ”I know where some are. I’ve heard they nest under an old wooden bridge near a dry river bed. I think my sergeant, bless his soul, called it a Bridge to Nowhere.”

Kiwina, too, thinks the bramble's story doesn't add up. "Tell us about these tall men, too," Kiwina adds, concerned that the infection might have something to do with the village being abandoned. "Is this their ship or yours?"

“Gah… now I am going to die. Just push me over the side of the ship before I turn. How about this. I will sail this ship for you, for a ride and one of those vials of remove disease? That’s it.. I will not require anything else. Is that a deal?”

Question about the Tatzlewurm - Know Nature or Arcana vs DC 15 Highlight to display spoiler: { After some reflection you realize the wurm is actually a type of dragon. }

The Bramble seems to bumble a bit but finds his sea legs. As a recruit his sailing skills are not tip top but the ship seems to move smoothly. He accepts any help he can from the Petals. At this point he does not seem to be a threat.

The Bramble itches furiously. With a quick inspection between the large vine-like tentacles stretched across his body, you find he indeed has the symptoms.

To the Bramble, Elyas will ask "How many people does it take to crew this ship? We have several experienced sailors in our number, we will use what skill we have to help sail this thing if you just tell us what you need us to do"
The Bramble notes the sails need several men to tend to them. Turn them when needed. Any repairs would have to be done by seperate men, with exceptional climbing skills.
“I am being honest. My team got no further than where you saved me. I do not know where this bridge is. I know of the bridge, but not where it is. I am trusting our little guide to take us,” adds the Bramble. “Oh, I also need a scout out front to tell me where the little thing is going.”

Rolth agrees to let the bramble on board, standing aside to let him pass. "Very well, but until you have proven yourself trustworthy, we cannot make you Captain. Are you satisfied with promotion to First Mate (Provisional)?" To the others, he asks, "Who shall be nominal Captain, in case we need to make a quick decision in a crisis? I am willing, but do not want to be presumptuous. In any event, I agree that we should follow the wurm."

“I have no Captain hat,” the Bramble says in a sing song way. “I am just the sailor here…”
“Hey, I’ve never met a water elemental. Friendly creature?”
Gothruk wonders if the recruit is lying but finds the Bramble is being honest.

Once it sees the ship is underway, the tatzlewurm starts loping rapidly through the grass in the direction it was trying to lead the Petals. Although it is running at a steady clip it takes some effort to keep from sailing past it.
