Restlin starts prepping for battle.

Garret verifies they have a way back from where they are going.

Zane asks when they’ve ever worried about getting back before.

Beri reminds the others about the backpack and lets them know that wildshaping has become easier for him with practice.

Tink sends off her letter and asks if the portal will be sealed behind them and how they can alert the Caretaker when they’re done.

Bosk wonders if word of recall or teleport will work.

Sesha says she can buff Tink’s shield and asks if anyone wants a weapon buff.

The Caretaker replies to Tink’s questions, ”I will seal the portal behind you and monitor it; should it become stable, I shall unseal it. Should the seal fail, I will assume you are dead and destroy the portal to protect reality. Should you somehow survive and succeed after I am forced to destroy it the machine provided by your ally should provide you with a way back.”

Rested, with new gear and a tight timeframe, the party enters the portal. A swirl of strange light and vague visions flashes before their eyes before they’re dumped in a small clearing. The first impression they get is that everything is to bright. The grass is too green, the tree bark too brown, the metal of their armor to silver. It’s like some artist added an extra, brighter layer of paint to everything.

A portal, like the one in the tower, sits in behind them. It is dark and inactive. They’re in some small forrest, the trees fully grown but not the ancient giants of a thick forest. The clearing they stand is is near the edge of the wood, and a small village can been seen in the distance below, probably a few hours walk away.

Tink takes a moment to get her bearings and get a better idea of where they are.

She takes a look around for some tracks on the ground to indicate what creatures may have been around here to use the portal and what direction they came from.

Assuming it is the village, Tink will take point and fly around 30ft ahead of the rest of the party.

Bosk makes sure his protections are in place and then observes that the weird colors could be really good or really bad.

Zane questions if the center of the bushes would count as a heart.

Restlin theorizes about a red barn

Wyaar uses detect evil

Beri makes a comment in response to Bosk’s and says he’ll keep an eye out for wish granting quest creatures.

Sesha isn’t going to trust this place of the bat.

Bosk keeps his hand on his blade.

The parties various detection spells reveal nothing. Tink can find no signs of any creatures walking up to the portal, though some wild animals have been in the clearing. Other than the odd coloring of everything, which seems to just be part of the nature of this reality, this seems to be a completely normal forest. Whatever the problem is with the portal it originates elsewhere.

Tink doesn’t find any sign of anything so she suggests they heads towards the village. She does her best to stay hidden.

Garret says he hopes the meat on the stick tastes good and not too colorful.

Zane activates his invisibility ring

Restlin wonders what color tastes like and watches Zane fly off. With him and Tink watching he figures they will spot anything creeping up.

Beri agrees that their destination should be the town. He ponders taking some seed samples back with him but decides against it before suggesting they keep an eye out as they move towards the town.

The party approaches the village and as they get close it becomes more and more evident that it’s seen hard times. Buildings are damaged, the ground torn up in places, and a makeshift barricade of cards has been put across the road. There are no occupants in sight, but the ruffling of window curtains and the click of a latch indicates the residents are around, but hiding from you.

A figure jumps out from behind one of the carts to the top of the makeshift barricade. It’s about Garret’s size and looks like a stuffed goat in a chain shirt. It points a blade of raw energy at the party. ”Back, fowl otherworldly creatures! I will let no further harm come to this village!”

At the sight of the goatman putting down his blade some of the hiding watchers start to poke their heads out. They all seem to be the same stuff-animal looking species, though they represent a wide variety of animals. An owl pokes it’s head out of a barn loft. A Kangaroo looks wearily out her front door, small child in her pouch. A Tiger bounces out of hiding down the street and puts his hand over his eyes, peering at the party. A yellow bear holding the hand of a small piglet gingerly step out together from behind some rubble and a small lean-to made of some sticks collapses revealing a donkey while a gopher raises his head up out of his hole. Tink reflects that the animals are an eclectic bunch and wonders if the piglet and the rabbit might be endangered over the ring. She greets the denizens, asking who they are and volunteering that she is Tink.

Zane continues circling overhead thinking that this place looks like a child’s toy come to life and he isn’t sure what is considered out of the ordinary.

Bosk goes plush with his glamored armor.

The villagers start emerging from all around the party and crowd about to meet the strange creatures. They’re of a startling variety of shapes and species, though none top Garret in height. Several introduce themselves.

The yellow bear with the piglet says, “Oh bother, they call me Weingart the pah bear. This is my best friend piggy.” he says indicating the piglet. Piggy just says, “Oh d...d...d...dear”

“I’m Howl.” The Owl says

“Kinga” The mother kangaroo says “and this is my daughter, Reux”

“T-Money” the Tiger says.

“Good morning, if it is a good morning, which I doubt.” The donkey says, “my name is Downer by the way.”

The gopher says, “I’m Go-For...can I get you anything?”

The rabbit says, “They call me Wabbit and my garden is utterly ruined.”

The Goat cuts through the clammer to answer the question asked. ”This village has been assaulted by the spawn of the Devourer again and again. I am Toreal and I have been fighting them for over a week to keep this village alive.”

At the mention of the Devourer the villagers grow quiet. Many look about in fear, as if naming the thing might bring it’s minions upon them.

Beri asks about the villages run in with the devourer and the spawn of the devourer.

Zane asks for the others to let the villagers know he is flying overhead so they don’t think he’s a bad guy.

Wyaar relays Zane’s message and spends a little healing energy on the villagers

Tink has nothing to add so she listens to what the villagers have to say. She tries to get a read on them. The villagers seem to be exactly what you’d expect; open, honest village folk out of their depths and scared. Toreal, the goat, seems calm, cold, and calculating. He’s clearly picking his words carefully and probably does not trust you. He does not seem to be lying to you.

Garret is not used to being the tall one and sits down to look less threatening. He asks what the devourer spawn look like and how would one go about defeating them.

Sesha also keeps quiet, thinking about how something is off about the villagers and how strange their path has been lately.

Bosk starts mentioning his collection of potent potables and asks if the Rabbit has anything to trade in exchange for herbs, spices and rations.

Wabbit says to Bosk, “Well...let me check what I have in store. We have a large number of huney bees and Weingart sometimes disguises himself as a raincloud in order to harvest some honey. We tend to make a mead with the huney. I think we still have a pot or two lying around.”
Wabbit walks into what is left of his house and comes out with 2 jars marked huney mead.

Weingart says to Wabbit, “After those jars, is there anymore?”

Wyaar wonders what the Tiger may be good at.

Beri looks over the group. The villagers are unclothed, except for a red t-shirt on the bear, and unarmed. Toreal is heavily armored and armored, at least as well as anyone in the party if not moreso, and seeming to be setup for dual wield sword fighting. There’s no easy way to tell how heavily enchanted the gear is, though at least some of it is judging by the brilliant energy blade he was waving about a moment ago.

Toreal answers the parties questions. Legend says that centuries ago the Devourer came. It was an monster from another realm that fed on the very fabric of reality, and many planes of existence had been consumed by it. Something about ours defied it so that it could not destroy us in an instant, allowing a group of great heroes to gather and seal its power, locking it into a small, weak form. Now it’s prison is leaking, and it’s evil takes the form of chaotic, twisted monsters. I have devoted my life to destroying it’s minions and it and have learned the many forms and their weaknesses.”

Tink, still trying to get a read on the goat, senses that he’s not telling the whole truth as to why he’s been fighting the things.

Wyaar stays a while and listens, knocking an arrow just in case

Zane picks up Garret in case an attack is incoming and says over the rings he doubts they will attack but best to be ready just in case.

Beri mis-names the Devourer and asks about the weaknesses of it’s minions.

Bosk wonders if one of the locals might be like something from a previous adventure. The mead he gets is unlike any he’s seen before, being literally from another reality.

”The Devourer’s prison lays a couple of days away in the mountains. I was seeking it out to end the foul creature forever when I stopped here.” Toreal answers Tink’s question and emphasizes the name to correct Beri. ”They say it takes the form of a strange mix of man, bear, and pig. As it leaks foul energies they take a wide variety of forms, some small but cunning, others large and powerful, all strange mixes of numerous species. You say you’ve fought strange creatures and hope to end extraplanar difficulties?”

The villagers at this point are mostly just standing around and watching the conversation, aware that something important might be going on with these alien visitors.

Bosk eyes the crowd with death watch. Surprisingly, none of them register as alive or dead. Judging from their appearance… maybe they’re constructs? If he checks with Sense Spirit they definitely have souls.

Though it’s minions scatter across the world it would have been difficult to catch it’s prison unattended, and it would have taken days if not weeks for met to whittle it down. With a group as large as yours we might be able to kill it in a single decisive battle.”

The villagers are startled at Zanes sudden appearance. Then Tink questions Toreal’s motives and he seems insulted. ”My motives are my own and none of your business. Just know that I will see the devourer dead, no matter the cost.”

Whatever his reasons, his voice seethes with rage and hate. He clearly has some reason to really, really want the devourer dead.

”If you’re going to help then let us proceed. The longer we dither here, the more people die across the world from it’s spawn.”

Tink reflects on Toreal’s comments and remarks over the rings he could be Agatha 2.0

Restlin tries to put a diplomatic spin on Tink’s behavior. He slips his arm around Sesha as they walk telling her the nose thing never bothered him.

Garret agrees over the rings that Toreal bears watching.

Zane asks if the villagers are more constructs

Beri asks more information of Toreal regarding the terrain on the way to the world prison

Tink requests information on the creatures weaknesses.

Garret eyes the mountains and tries to judge the distance.

The mountains are relatively close it looks like. On foot it would take the advertised 2 or 3 days to reach them, but of course the party’s magic speeds things up to the point where they can reach them in a day.

During the trip Toreal regals the stories of the many strange creatures that pour out of the devourer’s prison. You recognize the puppybabymonkey’s as the tiny creatures that came through the portal and attempted to force everyone to dance. ”Harmless alone, incredibly dangerous in large groups. Fortunately they have an addition to alcohol that trumps everything else. Throw a bottle or casks at them, then pick them off.” He describes the bird-women things as among the worst of the creatures. Impossible to put down unless you catch their bush. Mostly people just destroy any hedges within 300 yards of civilization or commonly used roads. For all the demoness’s ferocity, the bushes themselves are incredibly timid and won’t approach anyplace they can’t flee with their teleportation magic.”

The other creatures described are too numerous to count. He claims to have fought dozens of different creatures, and isn’t entirely confident he’s seen all the possibilities. ”Be ready for anything; it may create something even I haven’t seen.”

In additions to stories of improbable monsters the party has the scenery to distract them during the trip. This realm, whatever it is, seems remarkably inconsistent in how things look. The village was bright and simple looking, but they pass through an area that looks like it was assembled entirely with foot by foot blocks, including trees and plants that are pixelated and blocky. The foothills lose the blocky look are currently experiencing a bought of rain, but the rain falls in big blue dots instead of the normal clear raindrops of the Wold. In the lower mountain area forrest takes over, thick and dark, seemingly absorbing nothing but greys, blacks, and blues to contrast the previous bright, happy look of everything.

None of these changes affect the appearance of the party, who still look like themselves just brighter. Eventually, late in the evening, Toreal calls for a stop. ”We’re mere hours away now. Best we sleep and fight the thing at full strength in the light of day.” he seems to be in a much better mood after the fast day’s travel; perhaps he’d answer questions now?

As they start to wind down for the night, Beri looks down at the changing terrain that marks the last leg of the journey.

Is that dark grey/blue area before us where the prison is? Oh, I forgot to ask before, do you know anything about gates and gatekeepers withing this prison we are headed to?

It would be best to know how he plans to attack and defend himself in combat should the party need to come to his aid. She looks over all of his items to see their magical auras, and will also concentrate on Toreal himself. She checks him for the auras of any magical active spell effects.

Spellcraft checks: 32+Take10=42

Arcane Sight: "You know the location and power of all magical auras within your sight. An aura's power depends on a spell's functioning level or an item's caster level, as noted in the description of the detect magic spell. If the items or creatures bearing the auras are in line of sight, you can make Spellcraft skill checks to determine the school of magic involved in each. (Make one check per aura; DC 15 + spell level, or 15 + half caster level for a nonspell effect.)

If you concentrate on a specific creature within 120 feet of you as a standard action, you can determine whether it has any spellcasting or spell-like abilities, whether these are arcane or divine (spell-like abilities register as arcane), and the strength of the most powerful spell or spell-like ability the creature currently has available for use."

”It’s less of a prison and more of a random cave where it was defeated long ago. Legend says it found crystals there that would let it consume the world from that one location and it was only barely stopped in time. Since then it’s just sat there, leaking out it’s foul spawn.”

As someone we have known less than a day I'm sure you can understand my caution, even paranoia, about being deceived again.

There are also some who believe they are doing the right thing however have been mislead by the one you call the devourer, impersonating another powerful being. For that reason understanding someones motives can be quite important"
Tink lays it out on the table

"I can tell you have some sort of protection up to stop me from discerning any information about you. I have the same. As an act of trust I suggest we both reveal ourselves. If we are to fight against such a terrible creature we need to know who it is we stand beside. What do you say? I'm prepared to show who I am."

If Toreal agrees to the proposal, Tink will not immediately recast her Mind Blank spell in the morning. She will give Toreal some time to see her magical auras.

Tink will keep an eye on Toreal when it comes time to morning prep. It will be much simpler to find out what defensive spells he puts in place when she can actually see them being cast. While she rests she will ask one of the others to keep an eye on him for the same reason.

"Only a couple of us are protected from scrying and detection. Not all of us though. This means that - as a group - we can already be discovered.

I also have a detect scrying spell active and can tell you that noone is currently scrying this area, nor has scryed on us since we arrived. The chances of them scrying on you during those specific few seconds would be incredibly remote. Perhaps 1 in 10,000? 20,000?

Still, if you are concerned, we are about to rest. Restlin will conjure a Magnificent Mansion spell which opens to another plane. Even if they could scry on you they would have no way of detecting how we got there, no way of knowing where the Magnificent Mansion spell was cast and no way of knowing our current location on this place. We would be entirely and perfectly safe. How does that sound?"

Tink then speaks to the others via the rings "When we first met him I could tell he wasn't telling us the whole truth and he hasn't done anything to win my trust since. How did he think he could do this alone? Had he been waiting in the village for help to arrive? Why stay near civilians and potentially endanger them too? Was one of them family? Sesha shrugs.

"I'm sorry about this, but Tink has a point. I've given Agatha a pass, but I don't really know anything about you. Prying is rude, and I know people have their secrets. I'm going to need to know yours."

Sesha starts gathering a bit of arcane power. She had three spells to cast, two of which were high level magics.

"This spell is a bit difficult, but it will last for awhile. It's called Screen, and anyone peeking sees only what I want them to see here for the next 24 hours. It's a potent scry defense, as the scryer literally cannot defeat the effect."

Sesha concentrates hard on her vision.

IF someone was suddenly alerted to scry here, it would be because of a trigger. Showing them a gentle slope with nothing around would alarm them as much as seeing the party, so she instead sets an image of a pair of resting golden dragons, as cartoonish as she can make them, feeding young and resting.

That's a strong enough creature that it might prickle someones senses, but not so strange that someone would want to pry further, she thought. It would also further hide Restlins mansion spell. Sesha explains all this out loud to everyone present.

She then, quite dismissive of Toreals privacy, she dispels his amulets effects, after raising her spell power as much as she can.

(Dispel check = 41. Sesha can raise her caster level to 32. Base 20 + 4 Prayer Beads + 5 Surrender Blood, + 2 Vestments + 1 Ioun Stone)

His amulet, as he advertised it, is inert for 3 rounds. More than enough time for her to pry and Zane to snoop out his alignment.

Her final spell, is the 7th level spell, Visions. She asks with her spell. "Who is Toreal, and what are his motivations?"

This spell functions like legend lore, except that it works more quickly and produces some strain on you. You pose a question about some person, place, or object, then cast the spell. If the person or object is at hand or if you are in the place in question, you receive a vision about it by succeeding on a caster level check (1d20 + 1 per caster level; maximum +25) against DC 20. If only detailed information on the person, place, or object is known, the DC is 25, and the information gained is incomplete. If only rumors are known, the DC is 30, and the information gained is vague. After this spell is complete, you are fatigued.

Sesha cannot fail the caster level check, since Toreal is right here. She is fatigued.

Tink continues to try to convince Toreal to let them scry him willingly.

Sesha decides to just dispel him and scry him without his permission.

Zane casts Haste and goes dragon in case a fight starts.

Garret is impressed by Sesha’s magical skill.

Restlin disapproves, but notes the guy is wary of Wyarr.

Wyarr casts detect evil. And man, he is so evil. At least matching any single member of the party in skill, and molovent to a degree he’s rarely felt. A sheer hatred of all of reality and it’s creatures.practically floes out of this guy.

Beri also gets the hint this might go south and prepares.

Bosk is ready to go invisible if Toreal gets violent.

Sesha is thrown into a vision. A great, empty void. Pinpricks of light, crystals, floating in the nothingness. A great beast, terrible beyond belief, floating there. A small party, standing against the darkness.

One of them charges, screaming in defiance. A lion warrior, judging from his armor, but his stuffed body is faded and shrunken. WIth a gesture from the great beast the warrior falls away into dust, a glowing orb drawn out of him and into the creature, his very soul consumed by the Devourer.

Two stand, all that’s left of a once great team of heroes, both desiccated and falling apart.. One, a fox, turns to the other and mutters a spell. The other, a relatively tall doe, is revitalized at the last moment before her friend falls. With a shout of despair she dives at the fading soul of her friend as it is pulled away. Remarkably, she somehow catches it and holds it inside of herself, sparing it momentarily from oblivion.

”We cannot beat it.” the doe says, despairing. The Devourer seems to agree - it ignores them, turning to the crystals. With a wave of it’s hand one of the lights fades and dies, a stream of screaming souls emerging from it into the thing. It laughs, reveling in it’s victory.

”No… says the soul of the fox. ”But perhaps we can sever it from it’s power. It’s power remains here, but it sends it’s essence through the crystals to consume our reality. If we strike as it reaches through we can cut it off from it’s power, render it helpless.”

It was a complicated spell, and every moment left the Doe weaker. More crystals were consumed and as they worked all of their energies into the most powerful sealing spell possible, more lives were lost. It probably took less than a minute, but it seemed an eternity and the Doe was brought to her knees as her life energies were either stolen away or worked into the spell. With a final shriek of defiance the pair expended everything they had, everything they were, at the exact moment the Devourer consumed yet another city on the other side of the realm.

It’s great form compresses, shrank, forced down into something small and weak. Something that looked like a mix of man, bear, and pig. Full of power and molevence, but with no will to direct it, it sat there, rising only to slaughter those foolish enough to enter it’s cave, adorning itself with the weapons and armor of those that fell to it. Slowly, over time, it began to leak, a black, viscous goo that formed into wild, unpredictable monsters that went out and destroyed everything they found.

And in a distant town, spared the last second by the doe’s sacrifice, a small stuffed goat suddenly fell into existence. The weak, frail construct fell to it’s knees and screamed it’s rage at the heavens, bereft of the reality consuming power that was all it had known for eons. Minutes later, it’s rage spent, the goat stood up. Clenching his fists, Toreal swore that he would regain his power. He may be a small, frail creature, but he was still a construct, immortal unless killed, and no matter how many centuries it took he would master his mortal form and reclaim his rightful place in the cosmos as the Devourer. He would consume this pitiful reality that dared defeat him.

Back in the real world, the current Toreal realizes the jig is up. With a snarl, he jumps up from the log he’s sitting on and vanishes.

"Our tower. We throw him in with all our other evil, unrecoverable artifacts. If killing this little goat thing was easy and would solve the problem, those animal hero things...geez other dimensions are weird...would have done it. Or, maybe it gets cloned a bunch of times and busts out."

Can this goat thing be killed?
If so, would that solve the problem and end the Devourer threat?
Would the goat-soul just merge back up with the man-bear-pig soul?

Bosk waits to figure out what is going on with the goat man.

Sesha sighs and then explains the results of her spell

Tink is surprised at this revelation and wonders in dismay if Agatha somehow helped them.

Bosk prepares to attack.

Restlin wonders if killing or imprisoning Toreal would work and applies his vast arcane knowledge to the situation.

Sesha is doubtful, wonders about Gargul’s servants who work to destroy constructs, and says maybe they can stop reunification by killing the manbearpig. If they need to imprison Toreal she has spells that can do so.

Garret gets nervous when hearing the goat might eat his soul.

Wyarr states they shouldn’t trust anything he says and offers to render him unconscious

Zane wonders if Toreal can be redeemed.

As Restlin considers the problem he finds he can come to no clear conclusions. There are just too many unknown variables. What was the spell that sealed him? Was it divine or arcane in nature? For that matter, this is a different reality. How are the underpinnings of reality and magic different here? Similar enough they’ve had no problems casting, but that other reality had tech that didn’t work in the Wold. Spells might be possible here that are nothing like anything he’s experienced before.

Why was Toreal a construct? Was it a form crafted to imprison his spirit? If so killing him might just let him rejoin his sealed power. Or was he just trapped in a mortal form? All the intelligent life here seems to be what would be considered a construct back home. Killing him might just damn him to whatever hell analog they have here.

What was the manbearpig? The seal on the Devourer’s power? If so, killing it would free it and cause it to reunite with Toreal. Or blow up the entire mountain chain. Or was it just the manifested form of the power? In which case killing it might destroy the Devourer’s power forever.

There are a few things he can be sure of. If Toreal could claim the power by just walking into the cave he would have done so long before now. He also came along with the group instead of just pointing them at the Manbearpig and waiting for his power to return, so proximity might be relevant.

Toreal scoffs at the group, interrupting the train of thought. ”You’ve learned much of me it seems, yet you fail to grasp the full extent of what I was. Devouring souls? Child’s play. Reality itself withered before me, and I feasted upon the very planes of existence. Untold dimensions fell before me until this pitiful one somehow baulked my power.

Arrogance, hatred, and molovance drip from his every word. ”So go ahead, kill this pathetic form I’m trapped in or imprison me however you wish. Know that doing so you seal your own fate, for without my knowledge how to you expect to defeat the twisted horrors that spring from my prison?”

"If the death of the goat fed the soul, then he would have given himself to it long ago."

She wonders how the rest of them would react to her practicing spells on a captive to see what worked.

"Anyone against me trying a small series of spells on this guy to see what sticks to him and what doesn't? I'm a witch, so like, it's not like I can cause... damage.. with my magic. Just pain."

Beri wonders if they can talk with the dead that defeated the devourer last time.

Tink wonders exactly what he is.

Bosk says it would be difficult to talk to the spirits and suggests legend lore.

Restlin approaches the apocalypse goat and observes that he is telling the truth. He also states that there are too many unknowns and then asks Toreal what he would do in their positions if they were set on preventing Toreal from retaining his power.

Garret ponders that he is able to keep a destroyer of worlds in a lock and then asks if they can’t kill it or take it to the cave, can they leave it

Sesha isn’t sure either but states if the death of the goat would allow him to get his power back he would have tried it a while ago. She asks the others if she can use the goat man as a guinea pig for her witch spells.

Wyaar says not to free it, and that they should try to imprison it.

Zane offers to fly back to the town and question the villagers about the devourer

Run. is Toreal’s only response. Run away, and never return.

But this thing isn't the source of the leaking stuff. It sounds like we're going to have to do what this thing wanted in the first place -- destroy the thing in the caves that's spouting crap. Restlin rolls his eyes. Maybe this little goat thing really is the most powerful foe the Iron Dragons have ever dealt with, but that doesn't mean he has to be an arrogant little jerk about it.

"I mean, you just said we couldn't hope to defeat that piggy bear without you, and in the very next breath you tell us our only hope is to run?" He gets a little closer and narrows his eyes. "You disappoint me, goat."

He turns back to the others. "If that's all it's got, let's find a way to lock him away forever. Sesha, do..." Restlin stops, realizing he's about to give Sesha an order. She doesn't take kindly to such things. "...I have no problem with you experimenting, especially if you can work out an imprisonment spell."

Yea, that was much better. Restlin carefully watches her do her thing, trying to pick up on anything her spell work reveals about magic in this reality.

Sesha - 202/202. AC 30
Friday May 17th, 2019 2:00:58 PM

Construct Traits: Immunity to all mind-affecting effects (charms, compulsions, morale effects, patterns, and phantasms).

Immunity to disease, death effects, necromancy effects, paralysis, poison, sleep effects, and stunning.

Not subject to ability damage, ability drain, fatigue, exhaustion, energy drain, or nonlethal damage.
Immunity to any effect that requires a Fortitude save (unless the effect also works on objects, or is harmless).

Sesha will try a few spells, starting with the things constructs are generally immune to. To test its resistance to mind-affecting effects, ability damage, and non-lethal damage, she casts a series of spells that check all of those things.

Sesha casts Ill Omen, Bestow Curse, and Pain Strike, which test against the above resistances typical to constructs.

"Im not testing his immunity to death magic.. because.. well.. if he isn't immune..", she lets the implication explain itself. Even she wasn't about to kill a captive.

She also tries a spell with a will save, that is not within the parameters of a normal immunity that constructs have. Scry. (Not enchantment, necromancy, stat reducing, a death effect or mind affecting.)

With the tests ran, she'll have a better idea of what magic might work for long term subduing of the creatures here.

Tink lays out some constraints for Sesha regarding what she is comfortable with

Garret asks the others over the rings, if they leave the goat where does that put them. He reasons they either have to destroy the thing in the cave or find a way to seal the portal to this world.

Restlin points out the contradictions in what the Goat just says, informing it of his disappointment. He then instructs Sesha to find a way to imprison it.

Sesha tries some things.

Tink brings up the fact the goat is small and he could fit in her bag of holding

Beri asks if anyone knows how the transfer thing would work if the goat died and brings up some other options for dealing with him.

Bosk wants to contact Gimp

Toreal seems amused by Restlin’s reaction. ”Oh I would have helped you defeat the manbearpig to reclaim my power and devour you and this reality, but now that isn’t really an option is it?

He seems equally amused by Sesha’s tests and their insistence on not really hurting him. All of her tests seem to confirm he’s a fairly standard construct; he's immune to the things he should be immune to and vulnerable to the things that he should be vulnerable to.

"I'm going to seal it away. Then we should probably be okay killing or defeating man-bear-pig, for the safety of those here. Beating it will earn us their help, and then we can use their sentient undead which are willing to help."

She takes a deep breath, then casts her spell, fueling it with her own blood in the process. She was looking a little pale, she had spent a lot of blood in these tests. (Has paid about 80 hp to surrender blood!)

A small sphere raises from the ground and encompasses the goat-man, expanding as necessary. Then it shrinks again, and pulls his body below ground. She speaks as the magic happens.

"Thus, the tests. He's immune to lots of things, but he's not a golem. He's susceptible to spells that test his will, and immune to spells that target his fortitude. Sorry Mage Priest, he's immune to polymorphs. He will be sealed here permanently, unless someone casts a freedom spell. "

She finishes the sealing spell with a flourish. For the briefest moment, her eyes flash and red lines, the colory of ruddy woldsblood, connect her and the goat-man.

She watches him sink below ground.

"Magic balls and scrying and locate object won't locate him, or reveal he's trapped. Discern location does hint he's trapped, but not where. That takes a wish or miracle to find out, followed by the freedom spell to free him. He should be safe here until we need to take him home to the vault or otherwise move him. It might be best to house him here, and have the local residents built a fort here."

Tink tries to stop Sesha before she casts the spell "Yeah, I think we might still need him with us at some stage. There might be questions for him, we might need to kill him, and we might even need him for the ritual. He is a free willed construct after all. He may not want to help with the ritual, but he is free willed nonetheless. I think we need to take him with us. We can't afford to leave him here when we might need him. We might not have a way back here to get him"

She makes a few other observations "Given the things we are up against I wouldn't be surprised if we face a few miracle or wish spells too. That would mean they could detect and free him, and we'd have no idea. Ordinarily one of those imprisonment spells of yours would make a person trapped for eternity. Perhaps longer if you're the one casting it. Only thing here is that we might need him."

Sesha watches Toreal sink beneath the ground and tells Tink she can free him if they want but it would be embarrassing. She tells Restlin she was thinking about baleful polymorph.
Garret watches the goatman sink and ask if they go after his better half.
Zane says he was hoping Sesha would make Toreal a bunny and agrees they should move on.
Tink still thinks that they should bring Toreal back and polymorph him and points out that he won’t laugh long when Toreal sees what they want to turn him into but it has to be better than a toy piggy.
Wyaar suggests a newt.
Restlin suggests a pink toy pig in a dress with a stupid look on its face and their kids can play with it when old enough. He suggests moving on and leaving Toreal in place.
Beri suggests either the pig or something called forky. He voices doubt about the upcoming battle with ManBearPig and suggests that Mr. Goat is the only one who could tell them what to expect.
Bosk asks if they should make any preparation before moving on. He asks about another casting of legend lore.

The party seems to be evenly split between the idea of moving on or potentially freeing Toreal only to polymorph him into a more portable less annoying form. Probably best to come to a consensus regarding Toreal before moving on.

The party reflects. They had been making camp when Toreal’s true identity was uncovered. As such they have not had a chance to rest. As for the cave with the Manbearpig, all they know is that it is nearby. Toreal said they were close and should rest in the morning. It could be right next to them, or up to a couple hours away.

Bosk’s legend lore gives him the same vision Sesha had of the final fight with the devourer. It seems casting the same spell about the same target in the same place provides the same result (Sesha’s spell was just a higher level version with a faster casting speed).

He sure hopes so, at least.

I agree that we should be rested and full strength before attempting this. Other than that, it sounds like we'll be flying by the seat of our pants once we start.

Garret enters the mansion and plops down. He tells the others to wake him when ready to go.

Restlin really wanted to see the devourer fight Kevintar and Marteus but Wyaar was right. He figures they should bed down and rest up before pressing on, suggesting they’ll know what to do with Toreal once they deal with the ManBearPig

Zane lands and enters the mansion. He eats and sleeps.

Beri explains to the others he saw what Sesha did. He asks if he missed anything and then agrees they get some rest first. He talks about them flying by the seat of their pants.

Wyaar asks if they even know how to operate any other way.

Bosk wryly observes the times things have gone horribly wrong.

The party rests and is soon up again the next morning. Now they just need to find the cave.

Tink surmises that things are going to get hot and then proceeds to cast protection from fire on herself offering it to the other party members.

Zane also casts protection from fire. He suggests casting endure elements explaining he forgot to get something

Garret explains he burns and asks for protection from fire

Wyaar follows suit after Tink and Zane with protection from fire.

Beri goes into a fire elemental form

Restlin explains he doesn’t have endure elements and casts protection from fire on himself

Sesha places buffs all around and summons Faith. (OOC: The way I see it you’ve got a protection from fire on Garret)

Bosk also casts protection from fire on himself. He suggests potentially waiting until tomorrow if things take too long as he questions the wisdom in risking death from the heat.

With the party protected from fire they enter the cave. The temperature quickly shoots up and as they emerge into a large cavern they can see a pool of lava in the middle of it. Steam and flames periodically shoot from crevasse in the rock and the whole place looks like it it would be sweltering, though the party can’t feel it (if anyone forgot protection of some sort take 1d6 fire damage for breathing the air).

Across the lava, in an isolated section of the cave, sits the manbearpig. It looks about as advertised, a large humanoid figure that looks like it was created by sewing together several stuffed animals, a man, a bear, and a pig. It’s surrounded by Puppybabymonkeys that are singing and dancing about it. Suddenly it stands up, seemingly alerted by something. The Puppybabymonkeys freeze, watching it. It spasms and writhes in seeming agony as black, vicious ichor starts to poor from it’s eyes, mouth, ears, and nose. It streams out at and impressive rate, creating a pile about as big as it is. The pile shifts and moves, forming into a figure before it starts to congeal and change color, forming a new monster. It looks like a frog as large as a minotaur, but it has a limbless torso sticking out if it’s head where it’s eyes should be. One ends in a goat head, grey furred and horned, the other a red dragon head, with scales and fangs.

The Puppybabymonkeys cheer, the Manbearpig falls heavily back to it’s seated position, and the singing and dancing resumes. The strange frog monster speaks, it’s strangled voice echoing through the cave, it’s voice alien and horrible. The heads also speak, the voices combining into a discordant chorus.

Knowledge: Arcana 40 Highlight to display spoiler: { it’s hard to tell between it’s mangled voice, the distance, and the echos, but it’s casting a spell… no wait, all three heads are casting three different spells at the same time. Fix Garret.

Sesha casts another time stop, and gains another 3 rounds.

Round 1.

She casts summon broom and flys towards Garrets position.

Round 2.

She casts lesser spell immunity: magic missile and gets next to Garret. (have no idea where she is on the map but thats a lot of movement in two rounds.)

Round 3.

She casts stone skin.

------------------------------

As time speeds back up and her immunity ends, she uses a hero point to cast shadow-walk, whisking her and Garret into the shadow realm. She successfully casts defensively.

------------------------------

Sesha's Witchfire casts invisibility on Restlin after his spells go off, then it flies forward towards the fighting.

DM, feel free to tell me what/where is going on with Garret. Does the AM field get rid of the dancing effect? If so, if he steps out of the field, will a new save happen, or will the old effect happen? Does the shadow-walk effect happen if he's in the anti-magic field? And does that have any effect on the dancing effect?

Sorry for all the questions, great job with this level of magic and insanity!

Tink sends a greater dispel magic hitting both Frost Giants, one nalfeshnee, the chimera, and PBM1,2,4,5,7,8. Both Frost Giants and the Nalfeshnee wink out of existence. The auras of PBM 1,2,4,5,7 and 8 are temporarily suppressed so puppy monkey babie’s 6 and 9 only share a 50 foot aura. One of the chimera’s buff spells also is stripped by Tink’s casting.
Zane turns himself into an antimagic field bomb, planting himself acrobatically where he can remove the other 2 summoned creatures.
Restlin casts his own time stop summoning a number of devas and spiritual weapons to spring into action against the Man Bear Pig.
Garret starts dancing to the puppy monkey baby beat.
(OOC: Garret’s SR stopped 7 of 9 magic missiles so he only took 17 damage)
(OOC: Shadow walk won’t work within the field, Garret can’t move from the place he is in all he can do is dance, if Zane moves the field to Garret, then yes the effect would end. This is kind of moot though as the puppy monkey babies are all dead.)
Wyaar unloads on the chimera frog mage
Beri’s storm giant casts chain lightning on the puppy monkey baby, chimera and the lightning hits
Bosk casts silence before dim dooring near the chimera.
(OOC: yes the fire walk is stopped by an AMF)
Sesha casts time stop moves near Garret, giving him magic missile immunity and then stone skin. Her witchfire makes Restlin invisible and speeds towards the battle.

The Man Bear Pig spasms and writhes in seeming agony as black, vicious ichor starts to poor from it’s eyes, mouth, ears, and nose. The stream congeals into another monster. Once again it has created a Chimera Frog Mage

Zane yells out to his companions that he’s pretty much stuck where he is so he proceeds to attack the frog mage. He hits it once.

Restlin’s summons and sword continue to attack the ManBearPig. Most of the devas attacks hit as do both magic weapons. Restlin fires off his own disintegrate which strikes the ManBearPig and it takes full damage but it is still standing.

Wyaar unloads on the ManBearPig with his full smite and all attacks hit, killing it.

Beri’s Giants have nothing to target as the Chimera Frog Mage dissolves into a puddle once the ManBearPig was slain.

Tink stands ready to do something

Garret stops dancing and tries to figure out what to do about the blob spewing blob but it would seem that Wyaar beat him to it.

The Manbearpig fails it’s save then is pounded with holy energies. It’s quickly turn apart, black good spraying everywhere. The Chimerafrogmage gives an unholy schriek and spasms, it’s form twisting and fading back into the black goop it came from. The corpses scattered about the room also blacken and disintegrate into more of the black goo and all of it is drawn towards the destroyed Manbearpig.

Suddenly from outside the cavern more of the stuff comes, a thousand rivulets that start to converge into a massive stream. It seems the death of the Manbearpig has caused the scattered power that formed it’s spawn to be pulled back to their point of origin. It forms a great mass of writhing energy, one that twists in the air and is clearing approaching an explosive climax. Zane echoes concern for the summoned demons they had to contend with that winked out of existence when he used his antimagic field. He suggests a course of action that will let him get to Tink after the AM field is dropped.

Restlin answers Tink that he has the other’s covered but suggests going to where Sesha imprisoned the goat man instead

Tink agrees with Restlin’s suggestion.

Bosk is ready to teleport.

Tink takes a moment to do a headcount and then points out there is something in the crater.

Garret asks if the other part is still here and if they can leave it buried underground.

Zane points out they have another part and says that very bad ideas are sometimes the right idea after all. He thinks it is time someone else had a bad idea.

Restlin asks Bosk to scoop up the item in the crater with one of his bags of holding. He then opines they should free Toreal and put him into some nonliving form.

Beri thinks they should keep Toreal away from the vault whether he’d be lifeless or not considering his goal. He asks if they cannot put a stone slab over his resting place.

Bosk says he only has 2 bags of holding and then proceeds to protect himself as he gets his spatula of corpse retrieval in order to put the heart shaped remains into his bag. He also says he doesn’t like to pollute interdimensional spaces.

Wyaar doesn’t quite believe Bosk regarding holes in space-time continuum but he remains silent.

The object retrieved looks like a heart, black as night, still twitching as if it was alive and pumping blood. Anyone who interacts with it, even if they don’t touch it directly, can feel a gentle pulling sensation at the back of their mind, as if even this small remnant of the Devourer seeks to consume your very essence. The arcane inclined of the group are pretty sure this counts as “The Heart of Evil”.

There is some debate as to what, if anything, to do with Torial.

"That being said, we could probably leave him here for the time being. When we next meet with Gimp we could tell him what happened and let Gargul determine an appropriate punishment - or prison - for Torial. Who knows, maybe Kevintar's prison will become his"

Tink indicates she’s ok polymorphing Toreal and tucking him away somewhere safe as they don’t know if they can get back. She says they could probably leave him here for the time being and suggests ultimately asking Gimp what they should do about Toreal. She suggests heading back to the village.

Restlin agrees on the village but suggests they tell the denizens Toreal died

Garret lets his mind wander to thoughts of Bryn Baraz

Zane suggests letting Toreal out as they are taking the heart with them when they go

Beri argues they leave him locked up where they can find him

Wyaar says they should leave him imprisoned go to the village and see if they can’t figure out what Gimp wants them to do with the goat

Bosk asks if they should tell the animals that their defender was the destroyer of worlds

The consensus seems to be to head back to the village for now, so the party does so. The villagers are in the process of cleaning everything up. The carts are out of the road and doors and windows are open rather than shuttered and locked. When the party appears they start to gather around them again, clearly curious as to what has happened.

Tink is happy to leave the talking to Restlin.

Zane asks if the animal villagers are what they look like do they have hearts

Garret wanders into town and smiles and waves

Restlin opines over the ring that just because Toreal can’t become the devourer doesn’t mean that he isn’t still evil.
He addresses the town,
"Good people...err, animals. We bring word that we have hunted down the creature responsible for the monsters that have been roaming lately. Beri asks over the rings if it makes sense to actually warn the town about Toreal should he somehow become freed.

Bosk stays quiet.

The villagers seem very happy that the attacks will stop. They don’t seem to upset about Torial; it seems they really didn’t know him, he just showed up one day and started killing monsters. ”He w-was kind of scary.” Piglet comments.

"Pretty sure the guardian is gonna close that gate. We're going to use the heart of Toreal's power to free a god. After that, he should never be able to really threaten reality again.

"Still, he's smart, and evil. Those two things have caused a lot of trouble, even without untold power behind it. Part of me still thinks we should take him out, but part of me isn't sure that won't help him in the long run. I think it's best if we just agree to never, ever speak of the Devourer again. Sesha's made sure that only very powerful spellcasters specifically looking for Toreal can find him. Maybe our best option is to erase him from history."

With that in mind, he has one further thing to say to this village.

"Zane is right. He is not to be trusted. He should trouble you no more, but remember that knowledge is power. If you would rather not deal with the little jerk ever again, do not speak of him. Do not write about him in your stories. Let history forget about him..."

Take care, and may your lands enjoy many years of peace and tranquility.

Beri turns to the other as they start heading back towards the gate.
Well, if we are hunting things that Gargul chose because they weren't in our world, I suppose that means the remaining portals are our next stops. I wonder what the caretaker can tell us about each of the realms they contain.

Monday June 10th, 2019 5:49:22 AM

Tink smiles respectfully and says the village will now be safe. She suggests they keep going.

Zane tells the piglet that Toreal wasn’t trustworthy and his instincts were correct.

Restlin tells the others over the rings he thinks the guardian is going to close the gate, he also points out that Sesha’s spell is pretty powerful and suggests to the village they let history forget the goat man.

Wyaar is also ready to move on.

Garret agrees this place is weird and suggests they move on to get the next thing they need to collect.

Beri tells the villagers to take care. He tells the others that he surmises the other portals are their next stops and wonders what the guardian might be able to tell them.

The villagers seem a little confused about warnings of Torial after they stated he was gone, but they just seem happy to be safe and don’t ask to many questions. Soon the party is back to the portal and they are able to open it and return.

The Custodian, Dock, and Megaman are there to greet their return. ”The instability has ceased.” the Custodian informs them. ”It seems you were successful.”

DM Mitch
Tuesday June 11th, 2019 7:22:40 AM

Tink asks if the portals are normally left sealed and if it would make sense to leave them sealed for the time being.
Zane asks where they should go next and if they should rest.
Restlin asks the Guardian if he ever went through that portal and that it is weird. He then thinks over what they need.
Garret agrees about resting and then suggests contacting Gimp
Wyaar agrees about sealing the portal and resting
Beri agrees with Wyaar and mentions the portal leading to the undead world and asks if they know anything else about the other worlds.
Bosk updates Gimp on the situation and then asks the custodian to tell them more about the other portals.

Gimp receives the parties report and tells them to keep up the good job.

The party reviews their progress and what exactly it was they were doing. To complete the ritual and free the god they needed 5 hearts; the hearts of Order, Chaos, Good, Evil, and Balance. From the cyberworld they retrieved the heart of Balance, a mix of magic, tech, and biology perfectly tuned to work in harmony. From the world they just left they got the Heart of Evil, that of the ancient monstrocity known as the Devourer.

Additionally the party must gather 5 beings to enact the ritual who are the antithesis of Gargul. 2 Undead, 2 constructs, and a hybrid of Undead and Construct must be gathered, all of whom must be powerful enough to channel the energies of the hearts (at least 20th level) and have free will. Megaman, the strange ally you picked up from the tech world, is the hybrid, a mix of reanimated flesh and robotic construction. Dock, the free willed flying boat they found in the Sargrass, serves as one of the constructs, it’s unique construction and material allowing it to survive the energies in question.

Three hearts and three allies remain to be gathered. From various hints coming from Gimp and the Custodian the party has determined they can find them in the three remaining portals. They have hints on way lay beyond the portals due to the chaos of earlier and inhabitants being pulled through unexpectedly. One had several Undead come through, seemingly free-willed. One had a large group of barbarian warriors emerge. The third was sealed before the fight and nothing came through that the party saw.

From what the Custodian tells the party it can glean some limited information from the worlds on the other side. One contains many undead, another whence the barbarians came is trapped in endless war, and the third is calm and peaceful, but a great spiritual battle is boiling up in the background.

I agree with going to the undead first, especially since the king will likely have been informed that we will be coming soon. That said, custodian, can you tell us a little more about that great spiritual battle that is boiling up? Is it spiritual as the people that live there are being pulled in two directions on some issue, or more literal in the sense that some deities are about to lead their followers into battle?
