Sam: 16/12/15 -- CMD 13 -- HP 44/44
Monday February 4th, 2013 1:34:22 PM

Not sure of the humans' intentions, Sam keeps his answer as short and devoid of personal information as possible.

"Those are barbs to protect our camp. We've seen no children in our travels and our business is our own."

Shinto awakes his brother finally and then turns to the group of newcomers. Men in the Mountains of the Scab. Shinto mumbles to himself and those near; he takes a sip of Rum and stares down the speaker. Giving the utmost disappointing glare he can muster. His ax in hand while shield still strapped to his back.

It's obvious Shinto thinks odd of the situation. Men in the Scab..

Shonti wakes up with a start, as he was just dreaming of killing both himself, and his brother, who happens to be the first face he see's when woken. He stands up, first taking his cloak off of the ground, and dons it. "We've got company, better I hide my shaved face..." Then he reaches into his handy haversack, and thinks the word "Mask" and pulls out the first thing he touches. It is indeed his Duergar Skull Mask, so he puts it on his face, tightening the strap around the back of his head.

Unsure of their intentions, Shonti walks over to Shinto, Sam, and Braugh. He asks them in an undertone, barely able to be heard by the three of them. "Any idea who t'ey are? Or what it is their comin' ter us fer?"

The group of men continues their approach to the camp, despite Sam's warnings. When Bruagh peppers them with questions, a couple speak at one time, and you can't quite make out all they are saying. You can hear, "Missing kids" and "wandering off" and "searching all night" at various points.

As the first of the group get closer, you hear, "Ouch!" from the lead men as they step into the brambles. One man hops on one foot as he grabs his other foot, clearly in pain.

Shonti stands his ground, with Braugh, Shinto, and Sam. After Braugh tells them to stay where they are, Shonti holds his hand out in front of him, and begins sending sparks between his fingers, beginning to cast (Shock) Acid Orb. While the blue sparks of electricity start growing to form a ball in his hand, they illuminate him just enough to see he is an obvious threat. Shonti calls out to the humans in common as well. I suggest ye do what t'e Dwarf says, an' hold back. We'll come ta you ter talk, if 'at's what it is yer wantin'. Possibly even help ye find yer missin' kids, but if ye start lyin ter us now....

The Sorcerer then throws the growing orb of electricity in his hand at the ground near where the first human stepped into Devlins Spike Growth "trap." The electricity sparks around the immediate area for a few seconds, not touching any of them on purpose, before the sparks stop moving and making that zapping sound.

In common, after the sparks stop, Shonti says, in a very grim voice, a bit darker than that of his own: Le's jus say I would'n suggest crossin' me brotha's...

The group of men continue to approach, stepping carefully through the brambles, gingerly, clearly injuring themselves as they walk. The group does look tired, but wary. Sams suspects that they aren't completely telling the truth, but he's not sure of much other than that.

Shinto drinks some rum and tells them what he thinks of them while Oathbreaker says that he will help look for the children. Shinto yells some more as they continue to approach.

Dernock warns the men back, but they continue to approach. Bruagh yells at the men to stop, but they ignore him. Devlin warns the men again about the thorns, but they clearly have found them as they step carefully through them.

Shonti throws the electrical orb at the ground near the group and yells at the group. The sparks crackle across the ground, showering light around the area, temporarily making it hard to see. When the lightning disappears, the faintest hints of sunrise are more noticeable as the men walk into the clearing, nearly all of them limping now or at least favoring a foot. There are a total of six men. One of them turns to speak with Shonti as the others squat down and lean on poles. One man pulls out a bandage and starts to wrap it around his feet as the one speaks to Shonti.

"We're very sorry to bother you fine folks here. My name is Dornen. We hail from a small settlement back a short distance that way. A couple of the kids from the settlement have gone missing. We found some of their tracks leading into this crevice, so we've headed up here, hoping that we find them before some nasty creature gets them. Devlin examines the feet of one of the men. He sits down and mumbles, "Thank you." Indeed, they are injured, but Devlin can easily see the wounds and pull out a few small thorns. Oathbreaker helps by pointing out a few of the thorns.

Oathbreaker peppers the men with questions while Sam tries to encourage the men to explain their story. Shonti steps forward and asks even more questions of the men, while looking at them menacingly. Terser stands with Shonti. Shonti does notice there is a bit of magic coming from the group of men. As he concentrates, he can tell there are around 3-5 different, but similar, magical auras from the group.

Shinto finally makes his way to his feet, rum clutched in his hand, and suggests that a monster ate the children while Dernock glares at him while putting on his armor (about halfway done).

Bruagh joins in the questioning as Sam notifies Urval.

Dernock turns from one dwarf to the other, starting to answer one question when another appears. "They were..." "The settlement..." "We started looking..." He shakes his head in confusion, then says, a bit louder, "Okay, fine! You haven't seen them up here. There's no other way out of this canyon, so if you came from that direction, they're not here. DM Jeff O
Friday February 8th, 2013 4:31:33 PM

Sam complains back to the men, as he looks at them closely, trying to determine their motives. They become more clear when Oathbreaker pulls out his bow and points an arrow at the man. Sam steps backwards.

Shonti gets upset and grabs Dornen, asking about magic. Dornen replies, "Magic? You want our magic? I'll show your our magic!" With that, he draws his sword and points it at Shonti. (Please note: this is the first weapon drawn at this point, other than the bow and arrow. This is also going to move us into combat rounds to keep track of what's going on. No one has attacked, but just in case someone does...)

The air is tense as Shinto, who is looking in a different direction, doesn't see the sword drawn. He screams and yells as he runs at the man Oathbreaker has in his sights. Shinto hits him hard and the man falls back, hitting the wall of the canyon.

Dornen watches the man fall and holds his sword true, pointed at Shonti. He says, "No one needs to get hurt here. We're going to be on our way now. You don't want to die over a simple scroll, do you?" He gestures towards the fallen man and continues, "Toflar, grab that scroll and let's be on our way." He turns back to the rest of the group and says, "Any funny moves, and this one here gets the sword through the neck." His sword is pointed at Shinto's neck and he appears to know how to use it.

OOC:
Shonti can now detect that there are four magical auras that are all about equal in potency.

Devlin: As I'm reading wild shape, at level 6 you can turn into a large animal. Since a tiger is a large animal (9 feet long and 400-600 pounds), that seems fine. However when adding the dire template to a animal, the size increment is supposed to increase one category. I do see a dire tiger listed in one place with a size of large, but at 12 feet long and 6,000 pounds, I'm honestly having a hard time picturing that. Take a regular tiger, make it 1/3 longer and TEN times the weight? It would be a massive sausage, wouldn't it? I mean, the thing would have to be ten feet in diameter to weigh that much. Also, keep in mind that the group is gathered together rather closely -- the spike growth was to make a "v" to enclose the group, so there's likely a triangle with 20-25 foot sides, so using my old math skills, I'm seeing a triangle with the third side being closer to 30 feet -- so the entire group of characters, campsite, tents, and now men, are all enclosed in an area with a perimeter of only 80 feet. Its getting crowded. Turning into a giant, fat, 12-foot long tiger is going to put you on top of people, dwarves, tents, and maybe spikes. If you want to turn into a tiger, that's fine, but it will be closer to "normal" tiger than a dire tiger. Let's say 10 feet long and 1,000 pounds. And thank you for the info on the men and the spike growth so I didn't have to look it up again!

Everyone: Please remember that if we start combat rolls that many of you have no armor, and most of you have penalties due to fatigue. And consider your actions carefully -- while each of you can prepare actions, so can the enemies at this point... I would say that none of your prepared actions had triggered simply because no one was attacked yet. Bruagh is the only possible move that could trigger -- if you want to attack, yours will be first...

I'm not the best at drawing maps, but here's something you can try to get an idea of the layout. Hopefully it's clear enough -- each square is 5 feet, the green is the spike growth. Hopefully the letters from your name make it clear who is who.

Friday February 8th, 2013 4:56:31 PM

OOC: Ok, going to give my reasoning for the attack. When Dornen pointed his weapon at Shinto that would have qualified as "an overt threat" in Bruagh's book. As such he would have moved to just south of Shinto so that he would have been near Dornen and would have then tried to take his head off. I'm sure the humans held actions would have went off. Then Bruagh gets his chance to fight again.

Bruagh snapped when Dornen pointed his sword at the back of Shinto's head. He walked slowly but with a purpose to the offending human and hacked at him with his battle-axe. He calls out, "Spare only those who drop their weapons and fall to their knees." The Warrior Dwarf then fully engages Dornen.

Stormbringer is glad he took the time to put his armor back on.

Shonti gets upset and grabs Dornen, asking about magic. Dornen replies, "Magic? You want our magic? I'll show your our magic!" With that, he draws his sword and points it at Shonti.

Dornen watches the man fall and holds his sword true, pointed at Shonti.

@DM: Shinto's flask of rum is on his hip, but I did state: Shinto stands next to Terser, ax and shield at the ready, glaring at Dornen; Although he has no sheath or buckle for his ax, he always carries it.

Also Jeff, you said the one that Devlin healed was checking out our stuff... Which would be the one Shinto hit... Shinto would of pushed him out of the camp and into the thorns. Not behind him lol. Also said Shinto did NOT move with him, he would of stayed next to Shonti,

OOC: Well, I guess we're going to combat, then. :)

Bruagh steps up and swings his axe at Dornen. As he does, Dornen leans forward and his sword slices into Shonti. The coppery smell of blood fills the air as everyone moves into action. Shonti's electrical discharge trails along the sword and surrounds Dornen in sparks.

The human that had been knocked on the ground grabs at the pack and yells out, "I've got it" as he pulls the scroll from the pack. Bruagh's axe chops deep into the body of Dornen, nearly severing his arm at the shoulder. Dornen grunts as he drops his sword.

Sam whispers and a light pop is heard in the direction of the men. Two of them apparently ignore the sound, but one man shakes his head and opens his mouth, trying to clear his ears. As he does so, Terser steps forward, attacking one of the men, but the man steps to the side, quickly dodging the massive swing and attack.

Urval casts his spell as the seriously injured Dornen. Dornen's muscles relax a little as the spell takes hold. Shinto runs forward and swings his axe in a wide arc, narrowly missing Oathbreaker, but hitting one of the men hard. The axe bites deeply into one of the men as he rears back to swing again. A second strike hits the stunned, unmoving man, while the third one chops Dornen nearly in two.

At the same time Raeb moves forward and bites one of the man in the leg. He cries out as he falls to the ground, but Oathbreaker's arrows follow and quickly silence the man.

The remaining men turn and start moving through the spikes as quickly as they can, moving to escape.

Terser heads over to the stunned man and taps him rather hard on the head. The man's knees start to buckle and he wavers on his feet. Devlin carefully pads over to Shonti and taps his neck with a gentle paw.

Sam yells at the men, then thinks better of it and points at one of the running men. The man, having just reached the other side of the thorns, freezes in place, scroll held in his hand. As he does so, the air explodes near the fleeing men from Urval's spell. Two of the men stumble and nearly fall to the ground from the air pressure and sound.

Braugh pauses for a moment as Devlin makes a gesture to clear the ground of the spikes after the men have run past. As he waits, Oathbreaker sends a number of arrows at the paralyzed man. With the man not moving the arrows all easily find their target, all three sticking into the man's back with a sickly thunk. A moment later Braugh and Shinto run up to the man. Braugh tries to be gentle with his axe, but Shinto easily swings his axe in an arc that ends at the man's neck. The man crumples to the ground as Dernock shoots and arrow at the wall of the canyon, hitting it quite easily. Two of the men continue to run away, slightly limping, but quickly escaping while being followed by a few mounds of dirt flinging mud at them.

OOC:
Devlin, as I see it, you can't cast cure light wounds while in tiger form -- cure light wounds has a verbal component, and the druid wild shape feat says that you can't talk while in animal form. But yes, the cure will heal the windpipe damage. And yes, the men clearly took damage fleeing through the spikes.

I don't want to try and assume actions, but am I safe in guessing that Devlin will turn back into dwarven form to heal Shonti? If not, Shonti is going to need another fort save...if so, the healing goes into effect and the windpipe is fine. Isn't magic awesome? All in all not critical now, since the battle clearly is over for the most part. It's up to you if you want to run after the two fleeing men.

Gingerly the tiger picks up the mans ankle in his mouth before closing his eyes and going to sleep. Any movement by the man causes razor sharp teeth to scrape across the exposed flesh and bony prominences of the ankle.

Raeb lays down on the other side of the man a deep growl issuing from her mouth before she too falls asleep.

Terser watches the men flee while he casually knocks the remaining man on the head. The man crumbles to his feet as the hold spell wears out and he hits the ground with a thud. He watches as Shinto picks up the scroll, returns to the makeshift campsite, and hands it over to Sam. Sam takes the scroll, pops it in his pack and comes back with a pair of metal handcuffs. He slips the cuffs on the unconscious man as Devlin the tiger lies down, placing the man's ankle in his mouth.

Oathbreaker sends a couple arrows flying after the fleeing men, but Dernock and Terser head back to rest, leaving the last man to the others.

Urval casts a spell around the man while Shonti and Sam gather around the man. He wakes with a moan as he attempts to twist before he realizes his hands are secured. Bruagh has let the others have their chance. The burly Dwarf steps forward and looks the bandit square in the eyes. Now listen lad we've been playing nice with you and we really don't want to hurt you. That being said you and your group came to us not the other way around. You entered our camp under false pretenses and than tried to steal property under our protection. Way I see it we just take you with us and see what kind of justice the Dwarven counsel will dish out for tampering with Royal property. It will probably be a heck of a lot worse than anything we can do here. A big grin crosses the Dwarfs face. Ohh but thats not whats going to happen here is it. Your going to refuse to talk and just expect us let you go free or turn you over to the constable. Well sorry about yer luck lad. You picked the wrong group of Dwarves to piss off. Dernock read him his rights. Grabbing the man by the scruff of his neck Bruagh wrenches him to his feet digging a gouge through his leg as it is ripped from the tigers mouth. Urval find me a flat rock to put his head on. Once again Bruagh gets in the mans face. Last chance boy, yer messing with the Grim Guard. No matter how many we kill, there will always be more springing up from the pits of the Scab. I know I'm not a warrior and your kind are born with a dwarven warrior's heart for battle, but I have to think that even a blood-lusting dwarf would not kill this man. I think we should strip him and the others of their belongings, take his clothes, and leave him in the manacles (masterwork). If we can affix him to something here, fine. Shinto then makes his way to his tent to finally get some much needed rest; keeping out of the sunlight within the canvas.

He dreams of the human running away; somehow cutting the rope that ties his feet. But Shinto pops out of his tent and pounces on the man; then chops each limb off; letting the man set and suffer on the hot Scab ground; the dream pans in on a close up of the limbless torso as the dwarves set off toward the festival. The human laughs manically before rolling up onto his thigh nubs and waddling after them; his crazed laugh getting louder with every few feet until Shinto wakes up in a cold sweat.

Various axes and implements of destruction appear and the man is quickly pounded into submission. As he collapses on the ground, Shinto runs over and swings his axe in a large axe. The axe chops through bone and tendons and rings as the blade slams into the rocks beneath his ankle. The man awakens for a moment and screams in pain, but quickly passes out as he tries to reach for his ankle, but is restrained by the manacles. He crumples to the ground, his blood pumping out in large amounts onto the ground as Bruagh prepares to carry him.

The Oathbreaker watches in silent horror as the man's foot is cut off, and the blatant non-chalant attitude his companions seem to have. "What is wrong with you all!?" he cries out, rushing forward to help the man. (Heal: 29) He pulls out some bandages and begins dressing his stump of a foot as best he can before standing back up and glaring around at the others. "This man was bound and helpless, and yet you still felt the need to mutilate him! We are not heroes if we simply butcher for pleasure and intimidation! Look at what you have become!"

He pulls an arrow out of his quiver and points it at Braugh. "And you, Stormbringer. I thought you had more honour than this. God or no, you are a good man. What would Tahni say if she could see you now?" The masked dwarf turns to the rest of the group and calls out, "What would she say if she could see us all now? Do you think she would be happy? Do you think she would want us carrying out these acts in her name? I am naught but an Oathbreaker, but I have no wish to travel with butchers and monsters."

The man bringed to 'emself Oathbreaker. I told em'; he thought I was kiddin. We threatened death, kept him alive. We threatened hurtin em'; He was never touched. Why would he talk if he knew thas all we was doin!? Empty bluffs. An then he wouldn' walk. I told em' I be cuttin offa a limb if he gave us more trouble.

Looking at Oathbreaker in the 'eyes' of his mask Shinto is obviously fed up with this whole ordeal. If he lives, he'll spread word of me ways 'ere. A threat from us isn' hollow. What good is intimidatin' a prisoner if they know yer not gunna harm em'? Well, now tey'll know we will. He didn' wanna talk; FINE. I didn' care te hear his lies anyways. But, tryin te keep us from doin our duty, even if it is jus a message, is causin us problems.

He points his ax at the arrow being pointed at him, Now, ye cen get that thing outta my face. I ain' no butcher er monster. But a dwarf of me word. Be it a promise to deliver a message, or a promise te cut offa foot. We need te get goin; case his buddies bring back up. I don care if we carry t'is man er leave em fer hoppin on home. Ethier way, les go.

He props his ax on his shoulder like usual and takes a long drink from his Rum flask. Shinto's gaze is cold. He's not sorry, he feels bad a little bit that his decision has disrupted the group. But, it must have been done. The empty threats got them no where. We don't know who he is, why he came for the message, nor who sent him. He looks around for a moment;

Sam, lets go. Gotta message te deliver. Sam!.. Where'd he go!? He's got the scroll we be deliverin.

Shonti immediately ceases laughter when Oathbreaker yells out to everyone. He cringes at Oathbreaker's words, although it doesn't show from behind his skull mask. "Put away yer weapons brotha's. T'ere's no sense in us all turnin' on each otha now. We all know we could seriously hurt, or worse, kill each other darn quick, so le's jus' not go t'ere... Everyone jus' calm down, an' le's talk about t'is for a second." With this, Shonti reaches to his face, and pulls his mask up over the top of his head so that his face can be seen by the others.

The sorcerer continues, "Shinto, brother... Maybe ye did take it a bit too far hackin' 'is foot off. We can't jus' go killin' off a helpless pris'nor. I know ye only severed 'is foot, but if it ain't healed up proper, he's bound ter bleed out soon... An Oath? T'is pris'nor, an Shinto's axe swingin' through 'is foot, 'as naught ter do wit' Tahni lad. We're all affected by her bein' taken, some maybe a bit more t'an t'e rest." Nodding towards Braugh and Shinto, Shonti places a hand on his brothers shoulder, then goes on. "Oath's right, Shinto, where's t'e honor in t'at? Thief or not, bad as 'e is, we gotta do t'e righ' thing here brotha, an take 'im to t'e Clan Lord he's tried' ter steal from. Shonti turns to everyone at this point, and is obviously trying to de-escalate the arguement before it turns physical. "Way I see it, we're all responsible for t'is man's fate now. Le's keep 'im alive an well, 'sides 'is foot I guess, til we get ter t'e festival.... Well, t'ere's my piece on t'e matter lads. Anyt'ing ter add?" Shonti looks at each of the others in turn, taking a second or two apiece to look into their eyes one at a time. The sorcerer's gaze turns to where Sam should be, just as Shinto starts to call out for the Gnome.

Shonti turns about, looking everywhere for Sam, and he hollers "Sam! Don't do this lad! We all gotta come tergether here an fix t'is, not run an hide from our problems!" When the prisoner passes out on the ground, everyone starts talking at once. Terser, Urval, and Devlin shrug off the action, and go about their business. Oathbreaker, Dernock, and Bruagh are all shocked and angry at the amputation. Sam is aghast. Shinto attempts to defend his actions while Shonti tries to make sure that the group doesn't attack itself.

Weapons are pointed and accusations are hurled. Shinto continues to defend his action and refuses to repent in any way. Finally, he starts to walk away while Oathbreaker moves to heal the severed limb and Urval casually casts a minor spell to keep the man alive.

Tensions and anger remain very high among the group as the air is calm and quiet on the day. Shinto is the first to notice that Sam -- and the scroll -- are nowhere to be seen. Shonti calls out for Sam and Devlin, in the form of the wind, moves up to search for Sam. No one sees any sign of him, he has vanished like Bilbo in the goblin caves.

The mood turns dark as the group finishes picking up their camp site. The sun continues to move higher in the sky and as the dwarves start to walk, a light dust starts to rise. The dust stays low, but covers boots and gear up to the knees on everyone but the flying Devlin. Shinto looks around and calls out for Sam, but he hears no answer.

Devlin scouts ahead in his elemental form and is the first to see the end of the canyons and the start of the end of the Scab. The narrow canyons open up for the first time, at least in one direction. Looking towards the west as the sun passes thorough midday, the transition from rocky desert to forests can be seen and the thick dark green canopy of the forest can almost be smelled from this distance. Here the trails and paths seem to me more clear as there is clearly more traffic in this area. Off to the north, almost acting as a dividing line between the Scab and the forest lands, a large plateau rises from the earth.

The plateau sits at least one hundred feet tall, but it is not far from the exit from the canyons. There is a clear, wide, smooth path worn up the near side and small figures can be seen climbing the hill. When the wind blows just right, the occasional sound of music and instruments can be heard from the top of the plateau. There is also the sound of laughter -- but certainly not from a dwarf, more likely an elf. Clearly this is the location of the festival.

Bruagh is tired, having carried the injured, unconscious man all morning. You can see a few tents near the edge of the plateau from here, and a couple campsites appear to be set up near the bottom of the plateau. The road here leads up to the plateau, and then to the south, continuing along the edge of the Scab. It is just after noon time and it will likely take less than an hour to reach the base of the plateau from here.

He is conflicted, still feeling his duty to protect his friends, but never having resorted to lethal force when not under threat of harm. Such feelings are strange to him, and he pushes them aside, focusing on the task at hand, and ignoring that which he cannot change for the moment.

The thought of copious amount of ale draw him towards the festival, while at the same time giving him pause, thinking how to best to keep certain dwarves away from the booze until they can control themselves while under its influence.

Shonti marches on with the Grim Guard, idly kicking loose rocks as he walks. He feels his breathing warm against his face, as his mask holds the heat in. He cannot stop thinking of the possible repercussions of his brothers "chopping" and how they might effect him, or worse, his close relationship with Shinto. "What if they tell him to leave the Grim Guard? Could I even begin to try defending his actions? No... He must've known it was wrong. There's no arguing that... Guess I could let him go alone, after all, no one's cutting his foot off, are they?"

The sorcerer can't bring himself to side with his brother on this matter, but he knows Shinto has always been in his corner. "Right or wrong, he's always been there for me when I needed him. Always. You couldn't turn your back on your own flesh and blood now could you Shonti? After everything the two of us have been through together, I can't walk away now... When the chips are down, we're all each other has at the end of the day. We've got to stick together. After all Shonti, he left the clan with you when your tainted blood got you branded evil, and kicked out of your home didn't he?" Shonti's internal conflict bears heavily on his mind as the dwarves make their way to the end of the mountains of the Scab.

"No! No matter what happens, I'll stand beside Shinto. Period. He'd do nothing different if the tables were turned around." As they near the plateau, and can hear the faintest laughter in the distance, Shonti hears his brothers words, and takes them to heart. The sorcerer stops in his tracks, and falls back to walk next to Shinto. He walks in step with him, taking one stride of equal length to every one of his brothers. After a few paces, Shonti addresses him. "Shinto, my brother, I'll never waver away from ya. I've been thinkin' bout ya hackin' his foot off see,"

Shonti wraps one arm around Shinto's back, and with his other hand he points at the man on Braugh's shoulders. The group continues to trod onward towards the plateau. The air is certainly lighter here and despite the light scent of rain or moisture on the air, the mood of the group stays heavy and somber. A glance over at the moaning prisoner keeps the fun at bay.

Some of the group look around for Sam, but see no sign of him or his passing anywhere. As Devlin returns to the group and dwarven form, he thinks of Sam, but also sees nothing of him.

Shinto and Shonto have speak to one another as Shinto calls out, but no others in the group respond just yet.

When the group approaches the campsites at the bottom of the plateau, they see a number of dwarves sitting around a fire. They are sitting on rough-cut logs that appear to have just recently been cut. They look quite relaxed and there are no visible signs of weapons at the moment. A couple have jugs they are drinking from, and another has a wineskin. They are dressed in clothes that you might see on townsmen in the softer areas of the Scab. When you approach, they raise their drinks in salute and nod upwards towards the plateau, as if welcoming you to head on up.

Tahni wouldn't speak to me for days. But we got through it together. Just was we will with this. Let's get this man delivered... hopefully Sam will show up soon as well."

Do you lads think it wise we walk through a festival with a captive and maimed prisoner slung over our shoulders? Devlin as the group in general. Raeb and I could stay back with him while you all go in and introduce us and explain the situation. He will follow what the group wants but pushes for staying behind with the prisoner.

I don't want ta let on that I am still nervous about this meetin' being a set up. Rather have someone left on the outside. He thinks to himself.

Whats to be nervous about its just a festival. Loosen up and enjoy the fun, I hear they have a great selection of the best wild berries at this one. Says the voice of the druid to him.

I did nae ask you what ta do. I have always been cautious and will keep doin' so.

Have it your way, once its shown to be safe try to enjoy yourself at least.

The Oathbreaker peers around, unable to see any trace of the gnome. He sighs deeply, and mutters, "Sam, I know you can hear me. Show yourself, now. Enough of this foolishness. You cannot just run from this. At the very least, give us the scroll. It is the only thing that grants us any legitimacy. And if you insist on remaining invisible, you might want to stay here. I doubt a clan chief will appreciate a squad of messengers bringing in an unseen ally." The anger in his voice becomes clear by the end of his tirade. Realizing anyone not familiar with Sam might think he was just talking to no one, the masked dwarf pulls his hood up and stares at the ground.

"Not to sound harsh lad," Shonti begins, turning to Devlin. "But I don't see it being wise to leave you out here alone with him while we all go announcing ourselves. If anything, I'd think quite the opposite would be more appropriate here, given the situation. I prefer we don't split up at all just yet. We were all discussing there being more than just a delivery going on here before we left Drakesmeade. I don't think we should drop our guard just yet brothers."

The sorcerer is glad to hear Braugh speaking to Shinto about the recent events, and hopes that it gives him a little peace of mind. Shonti realizes that without Sam here, we look like a bunch of Dwarven warriors, ready for battle, coming to a festival with a prisoner. "Sam, little one, now would be a great time to come back to us, why don't ya listen to Oath eh? Come on out of hiding lad, I'm beginnin to worry about ya... We'll all go find the Clan Lord together an explain everything all proper like." Shonti keeps an eye out for Sam to reappear.

"Anytime now Sam.. Anytime now Sam.. Anytime now Sam..." Shonti thinks that repeating the thought over in his head might make Sam appear.

The group continues on up the long rise to the plateau. The camped dwarves give an unapproving look when they get a view of the prisoner, but they don't say anything. After the 10-minute walk up the ramp, the group arrives at the top of the plateau without seeing any sign of Sam.

It is clear that you have arrived. As soon as you reach the top of the walk, there is a large stone entranceway, clearly recently built, proclaiming the "Stone Festival" in giant blocks. Beyond the entranceway there are various stone carvings portraying various dwarves from the history of the Fhorge. There are dwarves, elves, and gnomes wandering all around the rather large festival grounds -- it seems that the festival takes up the entire massive area of the plateau, at least a square mile of space. There are colorful tents, pens with animals, piles of straw and various areas surrounded by flags, clearly areas for competitions. The sound of clashing swords ring out, but the clanging of a blacksmith's hammer can be heard as well. Yelling above those sounds are the barkers selling everything from turkey legs to fresh ale. Children also abound as they try to win prizes from the various booths with smaller games. It is truly a great festival, full of light and fun, from what you can see.

Shinto nods to Braugh as he tells his story; Ahy; very much alike then my friend... Very much so.

Shinto starts to lighten up a bit when he sees the festival in full swing; as they pass the stone murals; he points at them saying; We'll be etched in stone one day. The lot'o us. The Grim Guard. T'ings we did celebrated e'ery year... Mark me words lad's. It'll happen.

Entering the festival and seeing others drinking and having a good time; Shinto stops to refill his Rum Flask from his jug. About three more flasks left in that one... Good thing I got two jugs.

He doesn't know where to begin. Without Sam and the Scroll the "mission" has become less important. Shinto finds this a good time; Shinto will address the group.

Urval; Braugh; Shonti. Thank ye for at least seein I'm no monster. I can' let it keep me down. An te res of ye sholdn' ethier. Devlin; Dernock; Terser... Whas done is done. Nuffin changin it. Les jus move forward knowin I won' be interrogatin or bein in charge'o prisoners. Ever... I don' like tekin em' anyways... Tey jus complicate things.

After his "speech" stands in silence for a few moments; clearing thinking as his face is turning apple red.

If Sam himself don't think it's important enough to show em'self or deliver it on his own; then I'm not worried. He takes another drink of rum as he wonders a bit more about Sam. What if he got takin. Wait. baddies aint disappeared. Jus Sam. Maybe he runned off... If he did; 'ere ain no catchin em now... Hopefully he comin back...

Sam! We gotta promise te keep lad! Com' on! At least throw us te message! Shinto screams out; probably looking like a fool in the crowd, or the dwarf that got too drunk to soon. Either way, he glances at anyone that notices; I los a friend see... Or ye can't see... I can't even see... Bah; no mattah... He'll say to the onlookers and walks away.

=============
Assuming Sam Doesn't show:
Shinto glances over his shoulder to find a Dwarven ran game booth. C'mon; He strolls over to the booth watching two children try their arms at throwing axes and daggers. After the three threw their stock of weapons; Shinto walks up to the Dwarf.

We be lookin fer a leader'ah sorts. Can ye point us te where they might be at? He tries to be nice; or at least non-threatening; but for a warrior dwarf; who's not to smart or easy on the eyes, its a bit hard to do. Still carrying his ax propped on one shoulder he stares the man in his eyes while awaiting a reply.
====================
If Sam does show;
Maybe ye should figure out where te leader we need te talk to is? Or ye think it'd be better if we jus wandered around a while first?

The air and the mood is light on the plateau and the festival is in full swing in the afternoon. The sun shines down in the clear blue sky, but there is a light breeze, keeping the temperature from rising too much.

When Sinto yells out to the crowd, some in the crowd raise their tankards and yell with him, clearly having drunk a bit more than he has today. But there is no sign of Sam. Two dwarves dressed in robes do see him yelling and notice the man that Bruagh is carrying. They run over and offer their assistance, "Brother! It is festival time, but I see you have one who is quite injured. Please, let us help you and help him. Bring him over here to our tent, we can care for him there and you can enjoy the festival. We are here to serve others, please." They gesture towards an open tent and try to check on the health of the man.

As Terser and Shonti look around, they notice that there is certainly a good deal of merriment here. And while the festival clearly is mixed between dwarf, elf, and others, when looking at the smaller groups, most are composed of one race. There is no real tension, but it is clear that everyone is not as mixed as the intention of the festival would suggest.

When Shinto walks to the axe-throwing booth, the barker calls back, "Aye, you there! No need for a real axe here, we're all friends! Come now, you've got such a large axe there, I'm sure you could do yourself well here. Take a shot and show these elves how its done." He holds out a smaller throwing axe and gestures towards a couple elves who have wandered over and are watching the axe throwing. He continues, "Come now, just a copper for three shots."

When Shonti asks about Fifur Ironbane, the first person he talks to says, "Oh indeed, the host of this year's festival! You cannot miss him, he can be found in the large, colorful tent down there towards the end." He points along the festival grounds and there is indeed one tent that is much larger than all the others and even has a small carved stone entranceway at the opening to the tent. It actually looks rather out of place, but the finding that tent is quite easy.

"He said we can find t'e Clan Lord over in 'at big tent. Ya wanna carry 'im over t'ere?" Shonti asks Braugh, hoping he will carry the prisoner to the tent; he knows he would have a hard time even lifting the man off of the ground, much less carrying him half a mile. "If not, I'll try me best ter get 'im t'ere, might hafta drag 'im a bit though.."

Shonti looks around to the others still standing with the group. "Who knows, maybe Sam done found 'is way 'ere too.. Look aroun' enough an' we might find 'im round 'ere somewhere's..."

Shonti waits for Braugh's "go-ahead" and makes his way towards the stone archway leading into the large multi-colored tent. He keeps a watchful eye out for Sam as he makes his way across the grounds. Once he reaches the archway, Shonti takes a moment to survey his surroundings before going any further inside of the tent.

The group of rough, tired, and dirty dwarves quickly find out where the Clan Lord's tent is located. After stopping to buy a few bits of food that are quickly handed over, they start on their way, ignoring most of the festival. As they walk, their captive groans and the local dwarves walk with the group and continue to offer their help.

"Please, brothers! That man is seriously injured. We can tell by your weapons of war that you are not familiar with the festival. There is no need for weapons, but more importantly, we are all allies here. Let us help this man, we cannot have him die here at the festival, no matter the reason. This is not a place for killing, that will only anger the gods more. Our tent is just over here. Let us take care of him while you go speak with the Clan Lord. We're not going anywhere, we are here to serve everyone."

As you walk towards the tent, you see more of the festival. There are dwarves drinking and elves dancing. There are halflings running about, both young and old. There is music and the smell of good, fresh food all around. When you approach the tent, two guards appear just inside the entrance. "Here now, what business do you have with the Clan Lord? The guards look carefully at the injured man, appearing to have just noticed him. They look around, unsure, when a message is mentioned from another Clan Lord. Know you now that no weapons are going to be allowed past the entranceway, as this is a peaceful gathering. In fact, you should not even have weapons here on the plateau at all, as it is a breach of protocol."

Inside the entranceway of the tent you realize that this is so much more than just a simple tent. The tent is arranged as almost a palace. It clearly has a large number of rooms, and many are set apart by rock gates and carvings. Clearly this tent was built to impress any who entered, but it is still built with just rocks and tents, not meant to be permanent. One guard slips off through a tent doorway, but the other stays with the group, looking the rough group over nervously.
