Intrigue at the Stone Festival
Intrigue at the Stone Festival
A Royal Task

DM Jeff O
Monday January 7th, 2013 1:03:34 PM

The sun rises on another day at the fortress. The tall walls look cold and unfriendly, but the dwarves of Drakemeade rise and take their posts. A few bits of lazy smoke still hang in the air -- or is it fog? In the early morning light it is hard to be sure. A few dwarves yell and rush over towards the main gate, ready for a battle, but they quickly relax. A few moments later, a solitary dwarf walks through the gate, watched by the guards carefully.

He is dressed in what can only be a ceremonial battle dress, as it is quite shiny and impractical. He bears no weapons and looks rather clean for a dwarf. He has clearly not been involved in the recent battles here. He looks a bit nervous as he looks from side to side, his thick, blond beard swinging as he turns. He has short brown hair that clashes with the bright blonde braided beard. He calls out in an unsteady voice, "I am looking for the heroes of Drakemeade?"

Sam: 16/12/15 -- CMD 13 -- HP 44/44
Monday January 7th, 2013 1:45:05 PM

(Prior to DM post)

Sam solemnly leads Chuckles back to the animal keep from where he first rescued him. Upon meeting the keeper once again, he offers him Chuckls' reigns.

"I can't take care of him anymore. The path my group and I are on is too dangerous. Here are the supplies I used to keep his fur looking respectable. Make sure you take good care of him. You know who my friends are. We will check in on him from time to time. I know you won't disappoint us."

Sam hands the keeper a small pouch.

"There's 50 gold in there. That should be more than enough to ensure special care. Make sure you buy him ale every now and then. He likes it."

Sam gives Chuckles a quick hug and pat on the head. He then tearfully walks away. Thoughts of rage and vengeance are temporarily replaced with grief.
------------------------------------------------------
Upon hearing the cry to arms, Sam rushes away from the keep and towards the commotion as fast as his short, gnomish legs will carry him.

"What now? Drow, undead, Duergar, or more of the necromancers' twisted creations?"

Upon reaching the lone dwarf, Sam sighs in relief. He stops for a minute and does his best to determine the dwarf's origin, position, and any other little detail he can obtain from his appearance. (Knowledge nobility/local= 20 after "taking 10" on both)

"I am a member of that group. What would you you need with us?"

Oathbreaker (Ian) 18/13/14 - 49/49 - CMD 21
Monday January 7th, 2013 2:05:50 PM

The Oathbreaker busies himself at the shooting range. Since Tahni's kidnapping, he has not spoken a word to the group, or anyone else. Anyone attempting to call him a 'hero' or praise him for his abilities finds them self on the receiving end of a rather dirty look from behind the mask. The stench of alcohol seems to follow him around, and his flask is never far from his hand.

He does not hear the call for the Heroes of Drakesmeade, but sees Sam dash past him out of the keep. He follows the gnome, keeping to the shadows and out of sight to avoid any encounters along the way. Upon reaching the gate, he stays to the back, taking a long swig from his flask.

Terser looks up from the training dummy he's been hacking apart, trying to get a feel for how the blade works on his new weapon. He hears the commotion at the gate, and feels some excitement at the prospect of a living (or unliving) target for his rage. Upon seeing the lone dwarf, his feelings drift back towards resignation, and he positions himself to listen to any information that Sam can get out of him.

Bruagh, like Sam can no longer take care of Raeb. He is just to unwilling to put an innocent creature in harms way... like Tahni. The sting of her being gone smacks him in the face like a mailed fist followed by a bucket of icy water. Raeb had actually been gone for days along with Devlin... he hoped they were okay.

The stoic, grim-faced Dwarf shaves his head and face save for his goatee. The scars from his burns and many battles easily visible along his face. He don's his fullplate, black as night with spikes on the shoulders, elbows and knees. It has the emblem of Drakesmeade emblazoned in red upon the breast. His shield matches with spikes and the same red emblem upon its face. A wickedly sharp battaxe in his had he follows the summons to meet this new dwarf asking for the heroes of Drakesmeade.

Bruagh walks up behind Sam and eyes the newcomer warily as he waits to hear what the he will say.

Urval Torsten: AC24/11/19 - CMD17 - HP65/65
Monday January 7th, 2013 6:16:11 PM

(Before DM Post) While the group settled after the disappearance of Tahni, a messenger wearing a white skull mask and black robes, gloves, and boots came for Sarnak. After reading over the missive he was given, he saluted the messenger. "Urval Torsten, Cleric of Gargul?" He nods . "We've heard of your necromancer problem. They thought it best to send someone who could prove useful in faring against them, so that your group fares well in your absence. " Sarnak nods in response. "Fitting, I'll leave you to it then. We'll report back to the front lines, Now that Kyachi can fly we'll be back sooner than normal. I'll just make a quick route to tell the group, then head off. You traveled long, take a rest."

With that, Sarnak mounts Kyachi and flies off to inform the other members of the group that he was being called back to the Army, and Urval would replace him

Upon hearing the call to arms Urval reports to the post, Looking among the assembled group, he salutes everyone individually as he announces "I'm Sarnak's replacement, Urval Torsten, Cleric of Gargul. I look forward to working with you all and crushing the heads of the unliving armies we are sure to encounter."

Sam nods to the newcomer.

"We'll met Urval. My name is Sam. I'm this group's bard. Excuse us if the introduction is somber. We have no reason to be cheery at the moment."

Sam admires Urval's appearance and then looks over the rest of his brothers.

"I have a feeling that you will fit in well with us. We are quite the grim bunch. Our enemies will lose heart at our very presence."

To Bruagh- "I need to speak with you and the others after this business is settled. I bare gifts for our upcoming mission. Special gifts for you, mighty Bruagh".

Shinto watches Sam hurry to the gates, answering the summons of "Heroes of Drakesmeade"
Heroes... Shinto thinks, following way behind the gnome.
Fully equipped, always ready, Shinto's armor seems molded from the same cast as Braughs. Night black with Drakesmeads Crest on his breastplates chest piece and boldly on the front of his black shield as well. Shinto bears no spikes though, and Zarbadium is written in Dwarven script at the very top of the shield. If your close enough to read it though, you'd better be his friend.

Shinto watches from a distance, listening to what this dwarf has to say. He watches Sarnack take off, and same speak to this new comer as well.
At least he follows a God who actually does something in this forsaken land. Death is all to much apart of this Scab..

His new ax he uses to lean on, its black blade fresh, without blood stain, facing the keeps gates. He too takes a long drink, finishing off the flask, of his own Dwarven Ale.
Need ter getta refill 'efore leavin. Wouldn' last wiff'out it. His shield on his back for now, for if anyone was to attack Drakesmeade at this moment... Well...
Let them try...

He waits, watches and listens as Sam handles the messenger and introduction to the new comer. Shinto doesn't stand out of sight, just back far enough to be a sight to see, not to speak to.

Heraring some unknown Dwarf call out for the "Heroes of Drakesmeade," Shonti slowly walks over towards the gates. Yeh.. Some heroes we are..

The sorcerer is donning a black cloak, with the hood hanging low over his face. When he approaches the group, and takes his place beside Sam, Shonti removes the hood covering his face. It reveals very solemn looking eyes, and long black dread-locked hair to be the only features visible of the Dwarf's face. From his jaw-line down is covered by a bone mask that is made from a Duergars skull. He looks to the newcomer as he announces being Sarnak's replacement. "Aye. We welcome your presence. I am Shonti Zarbadium."

Shonti then looks to the Dwarf that summoned this group here. "Who are ye? And what'ya want wit' us? We're no heroes... Jus' Dwarves seekin' vengeance."

Devlin -- AC 18/13/16 -- CMD 17 -- HP 48/48
Tuesday January 8th, 2013 1:02:40 PM

Devlin awakes with a start coughing flecks of dried blood and dirt from his mouth. He breaths in a shuddering gasp and notices that both lungs seem to be working. Ahh you're awake. It's about time. A strange voice says to the confused Dwarf.

Opening his eyes Devlin looks around the clearing, he sees plenty of his dried blood on the ground and the large form of Raeb the bear sitting close by. I must be losing it if bears are talkin' ta me. He says weakly. Right the first thing you see is a bear so that must be who's talking to you. Wrong it's the Dwarf that saved your life. More confused and wary Devlin searches the grove again for the speaker. Slowly he rises to his feet and takes a few steps. Raeb gives a low groan but continues cleaning her paws.

Who's there show yerself. The rogue says to the trees. Not much to show I'm afraid, been dead for quite some time. All that's left of me is spirit and a force of will wanting to protect the Scab. Reaching for his waist Devlin goes to draw his weapons only to find them gone. Well spirits can show themselves so show me where you are.

If you insist. Says the voice.

Slowly and against Devlin's will his own hand raises, his index finger pointing to his head. I'm in here somewhere or maybe it's more by the heart. Wherever the soul dwells I guess, speaking of which you have quite the abrasive soul most uncomfortable. We will have to work on that.

The rogues' breathing comes in heavy pants as his hand falls away from his head. What do ya mean you are in my head? I did na ask for ya ta be there, get out now. Quite impossible I'm the only thing keeping you alive right now. I'm surprised your up and moving as it is, way to show true Dwarven spirit and all that.

Looking around the glade Devlin sees Raeb again. What's she doing here, I saw her run off when Bruagh started screaming. Hmm? Her? I called out for help when I saw you getting attacked she came. Know her do you? Good you could use a companion. Now listen up cause you have a lot to learn and no time to learn it in. Well it can bloody well wait until I get back to Drakesmeade. States the now grumpy Dwarf as he begins stomping out of the clearing.Fine but at least get my things, you're going to need them more than my corpse will.

As the group gathers around the gates greeting the newcomer a scraggly tree next to the wall gives a rustle and Devlin steps forward. He seems to argue with someone before nodding to the group. Behind him the form of Raeb can be seen rising to her full height. She looks right at Bruagh with recognition in her eyes. Looks like we're all here so say yer peace. Devlin says gruffly.

The once rogue now wears armor of darkwood, carrying a shield of the same. He seems more serine and at peace but you still see the light of deviousness in his eyes. Raeb looks to have benefited from her time away. She seems larger and you can see gleaming claws on her once torn and ragged paws.

When Sam scans the newly arrived dwarf, he can see that the finery could be from nearly any of the local clan lords, as few in the area truly have any identifiable "uniforms" as such. However, he can tell that it is clearly very nice and someone certainly spent some money on the outfit.

As Sam talks with the newcomer, Terser easily observes and sees the interaction. He does not notice anything else out of the ordinary in the area.

When some of the group approach quickly, the newcomer hesitates, but then clears his throat and begins what sounds like a prepared speech:

"Good adventurers, Clan Lord Huran Rockbreaker sends his greetings to your party, whose deeds have become known throughout the land. He sends his thanks on behalf of all his people and wishes you the best of luck in all your future endeavors."

The dwarf pauses a moment before he continues, "All signs point to an end to the current hostilities, and all peoples of the Forge pause for the great Stone Festival. Clan Lord Huran seeks your aid in a matter of great importance to him, but a small effort by your august group. The clan lord is preparing to attend the upcoming stone festival with many others, but has been delayed by matters of state. He would greatly appreciate your assistance in delivering a message for him of utmost importance to Clan Lord Fifur Ironbane, the host of the stone festival this year. It is a small, but important message that needs to reach the clan lord as soon as possible."

Sam looks flabbergasted. He uses none of his skills of communication to deal with the dwarf.

"You've got to be kidding me. You came all the way here to find us to assist on an courier errand? I personally find your request insulting. Do you realize we just fought demons, duergar, and an assortment of other monsters? To top it all off we lost..."

Sam stops and looks down.

"Why did she have to leave us? She walked right into the enemy's hands."

Sam looks to Bruagh.

"I've talked to everyone here and checked every map. I haven't found a lead on... Maybe one of these clans knows something about the location of the drow."

(To the dwarf regardless of Bruagh's answer) "What does the message say anyway?"

Sam eyes the newcomer with suspicion.

The dwarf takes a step back as the group responds to his request. He fumbles with his words as he replies, "I certainly meant no insult. Please accept my apologies from the clan lord. I think that maybe he thought that you would be heading to the stone festival now, like many others, and that he would be greatly honored if you would deliver this message for him. There is nothing more that I am not telling you. The stone festival is a great festival that is held each year. This year clan Ironbane is the host. Certainly the travel through the forge has its own hazards, and it would be dangerous for me to travel there myself, but there is no other motive at work here."

"As for the content of the message, I have no idea. The clan lord has sealed it with his royal seal so that the receiving clan lord will know that it is rightfully and truly from him."

Dernock tries to recall some knowledge about the clans. The Rockbreaker clan is indeed from near here, living in a mountain somewhere in this area, but the exact details are unknown.

So the messengers met with the criminal lord and delivered the message. To their horror, the king had not only threatened him if he didn't release his friend, but offered the messengers as gifts of good will!
The one was forced to work in the criminal's tavern serving drinks and the other forced to serve as the crime lord's translator. Taking careful note of the dwarf, no one seems to notice anything really out of place. Sam isn't sure if something is wrong with him and his message or if maybe he's just jumpy from the recent battles.

When Sam mentions the story about the king and messengers, the dwarf responds, "Ah, please, but this is not the case! There is no deception here at all. My clan lord simply through that this powerful group of adventurers would already be headed to the stone festival, as nearly everyone is going. Certainly everyone in the Scab is invited to attend, even the elves and halflings! My clan lord is not asking for servants, but just a little aid while he is delayed."

He pauses and looks over at Devlin and continues, "Could it be that perhaps my good dwarf does not know of this festival?" He smiles as he realizes that Devlin really doesn't know and continues, "Oh, but you must be from another place! The stone festival happens each year at the solstice where the Scab and the Culverwood meet. It is a week of good times and good ale. Each year the host alternates from the dwarves to the Elves. This year it is clan lord Fifur Ironbane who will be the host. Clan lord Rockbreaker will certainly be there where you can meet him in person -- as will most of the clan lords of the Scab and nearly every other important leader of the area."

-A small crystal phial of Keen Oil. Spread upon your bladed weapon, this Oil gives the blade Keen properties until such time as the weapon is used in combat. The weapon will remain Keen during the battle, but the oil will wear off by the time the fighting is over.

-Lucky Sugarplum. When consumed, it allows ONE additional roll of the dice for ONE circumstance. For instances, if a PC needs to make an attack roll and he gets the dreaded 1, using the Plum will allow a reroll and the PC may then pick which of the two rolls to keep. He remembers how proud he was when the boy followed in his footsteps to become a Paladin of Domi. He wants to be the first to tell the boy of Tahni and of his own failings. Especially of his no longer following Domi. He hopes not to sway the boy, as he looks at Dende as his own son. He hopes the boy will not be angry but will understand if he is. Then came the sharp electric shock of Taggart's arrows as they struck the device out of his hands. This was quickly followed by the heroic tackle of Shinto to give the fragile gnome cover from the devastating blast. Without Tag's perfect shooting, Sam would be dead.

Although aware of dwarven culture concerning matters of naming, Sam still never could bring himself to use or ask about Tag's last name.

"How can I call him that after I know the heroic deeds that he has accomplished? I guess I'll never fully understand dwarves..."

It is still stained and scorched, the mud of Riddleport, The Cinderwood and The Forlorn mountain still are smeared across its surface. He grimaces recalling those that died on the trip the emotional scars still present on his soul. He turns the garment over in his hands a few times than takes a deep breath and throws it into the flames of the nearby fire. Slowly exhaling he watches the cloth burn to ash before putting the fire out and closing up his room.

What was that all about than? The voice asks as Devlin makes his way back to the entrance.

You tell me you're the one sharing my head space. Devlin snaps rather loudly causing a passing couple to look at him oddly.

Still upset about me saving you I see. Well you're welcome and you will thank me at some time.

In a hushed tone the flustered dwarf continues to argue. I did not ask you for this, you took my body an... You know you dont need to actually speak to talk to me right? Shut up and let me talk. You changed everything about my mind ta what fits you. I hardly remember how ta wield a sword or open a lock. But now I can talk ta animals and cast spells? This is what you want, not me. Until I figure this out you need ta leave me alone.

Sam takes a careful look at the scroll case. It looks like a normal scroll case and it has a wax seal over the opening mechanism with an image of a dwarf's face on the brown seal. He mutters some magical words and casts a spell. He holds the scroll out at arm's length to examine it carefully with the eyes of the spell and he sees nothing to indicate that there is anything magical about the scroll case.

As the group travels, he hands the scroll case off to Tag/Oath/Oathbreaker, who grabs the scroll. Everyone gathers around as he looks carefully at the case. It appears to be a well-used scroll case that has seen better days. While the edges are a bit frayed, it is still a solid case. It likely wouldn't withstand a dousing in the water, it should be fine if it starts to rain. There might have been some markings on the case a long time ago, but they've all been worn clean over time. The seal on the opening appears to have been carefully placed to ensure that there is no way to open the case and obtain the contents without breaking the seal.

While travel continues along the old faint road, Dernock starts trying to think about the local customs and the tampering. He remembers that using the sealed scroll is the most common way to send messages among the clans when an individual from the clan cannot be sent for any reason. If a message arrives with the seal broken, the message is assumed to be invalid. It depends on the sending and the receiving clan lords what happens to the messenger in that case -- anything from a short prison term to more serious punishments including physical pain and slavery are possible.

The day continues on as the group works their way towards the Culverwood and the festival grounds. There is an old road, but it clearly does not get a lot of use these days. If the group travels at an average speed, you should be able to make it to the festival in about 4 days with 3 nights spent on the road. Or the group could push along at a faster pace and only spend 2 nights on the road, but the days would be much longer and tiring...

Wednesday January 16th, 2013 2:01:21 PM

The group continues trudging along the road throughout the day. There is a little discussion, but the group wisely watches the area around them as they travel. The ground is hard-packed and the old trail rises and falls into the various hills and valleys as it winds around the mountains of the Scab, carefully avoiding attempting to go up and over any of the steep peaks.

The day is warm, like most in the Scab, and there is a light breeze. A few light clouds pass by during the day, but nothing to provide any relief from the sun that feels warmer as the day progresses. Bruagh leads the group along the trail and watches carefully. He sees little, if any, signs of life other than a little scrub brush and the occasional lone tree clinging to a cliff edge. He spots a bird far away that appears to be some sort of falcon or eagle, lazily drifting in the winds.

Right behind Bruagh follows Oathbreaker, who also keeps a careful watch. He spots a few places where there are animal droppings along the edge of the trail, perhaps from a dog or wolf. He also spots a few cave openings in the afternoon that are low the ground and mostly out of sight.

Devlin and Raeb take it easy throughout the day, though it is a bit warm for Raeb's taste. He tries to enjoy the day while Raeb sniffs the air a few times and seems to smell something a couple times, but the scent isn't enough to get Raeb to follow it off the worn trail.

As the sun starts to work its way down behind some of the larger mountain peaks, the sky turns a bright red with the light bouncing off the various rock formations. The shadows start to lengthen, and the group has to decide whether to stop for the night or to push on into the night. The general conversation seems to indicate the group wants to stop for the night soon, instead of trying to make the trip in a shorter, but more tiring, time frame.

Looking around, one place looks as good as another to stop and rest. There is little firewood to be had anywhere, but enough might be gathered for a small, short fire. There are various hills and valleys, little water, but some; and a cave might be used for shelter, if the group dares to explore one...

The group discusses heading into the cave, then decide to check it out.

Terser steps forward first, taking care to look around the entrance for any signs of animals or tracks. There ground there is hard and rocky. He's not completely sure that he would be able to find any tracks, if an animal lived there. But he doesn't see anything to indicate the passage of anything through the entrance.

Oathbreaker sneaks up on the cave and carefully looks inside. As the sun is setting in the opposite direction, some of the low sun's rays shine into the cave. It looks like there's a small remain of a campfire just inside the entrance, but no more than a few ashes from what he can tell.

Bruagh steps forward and boldly steps inside the cave entrance. The ceiling of the cave is low, but high enough he can stand easily. If he were to jump, well, he'd certainly hit his head. The walls, floor, and ceiling are smooth and dark. The cave has a flat area about 30 feet square, but with all rounded edges. The entranceway is about 30 feet wide as well. Towards the rear of the cave, there appears to be a long tunnel, smaller in diameter, but clearly just as round, headed down into the mountain.

Shinto steps in and looks carefully as well. He can see no signs that there has been any work done on the stone here. It looks all completely and totally natural, like a very old lava tube.

Devlin prepares to deal with any animals that may appear, but he sees no sign of any in the cave.

Sam plops down in the cave and breaks out the cookies for everyone. He then quickly lies down and starts to snore lightly, he was apparently very tired after the hike today.

Terser decides that for tactical reasons, a place near the cave entrance may be better. Before he lays down for the night, he pops open a flask to settle down.

Outside the sun continues to move lower and the shadows grow longer. The air starts to cool off from the heat of the day quickly as a light breeze starts blowing.

Shinto steps into the cave and glances down the tunnel. He sees lots of darkness, but nothing moving. He then moves to set his tent up inside the small cave. Shonti heads over to join him in the tent as Sinto carefully sets his belongings on the ground near the tent.

Bruagh stands in the entrance way and calls out, "We should have two people per watch. One watching the entrance to the cave, the other watching the tunnel. I'll take second watch as well."

Urval nods to Bruagh and mentions that he wants to complete some work before sleeping. He opens his portal and steps inside while Dernock stands guard at the entrance and Oathbreaker plops down on his bedroll in the middle of the cave with a clank.

Night in the cave and Mornings Light
Monday January 21st, 2013 8:18:12 PM

The night is still both outside the cave and further down the tunnel. Beyond the cae the tall mountains make the grounds about dark indeed. For the dwarves it is of little consequence, at least to 60 feet. Beyond this marker the world becomes deep shadow and the pitch of night. Down the small tunnel is even more so. As the dwarves settle in, they natural connections to the stone attune themselves to the sounds of this small pocket int the mountain. Somewhere far within, can be heard a bit of running water.

The night passes and the group finds the morning to be crisp and clear. The sun has not risen to light the area and won't be several hours. The land is cloaked in shadow.

The Road Less Taken
Tuesday January 22nd, 2013 11:00:04 PM

Sam pushes the cookies and soon has takers, Oathbreaker, Shonti and Bruagh.
Oathbreaker packs up and exits the cave looking for signs of trouble
Devlin meditates and prepares
Urval too, meditates over the day's events and to regain his spells
Dernock awakens with a yawn and a stretch causing most of his joints to click into place
Shinto, ax in hand exits the cave
Terser armors up
Shonti repacks his gear into his Haversack and is soon following in line

Leaving the cave, the early morning provides little light. It will still be several hours before the sun breeches the high mountains to cast its light and warmth to the old road where the dwarven company walks. Still the morning air is already warm. There is no sign of predators or anything out of the ordinary to Oathbreaker. The group is soon on its way. About 2 miles down the road it cuts back following the mountain and the terrain alters greatly. Here the road seems to have been forced to follow this path into much harsher rock.

The road varies from 10 to 30 feet wide winding its way about the mountain and promises to do so for the next few days to where it should deposit the group at the Culverwood and the site of the Stone Festival. To the right, the mountain slopes gently but inevitably away to tan eventual rocky floor. To the left, it proceeds upwards some 500 meters before straightening into a several thousand foot cliff of granite. Great boulders are scattered about the scree fields ranging from merely large to structures that would have made suitable battle towers from some long ago war.

The Road Less Taken
Wednesday January 23rd, 2013 9:11:39 PM

The road through the boulder field screams ambush site to the dwarves. As you examine it, you can be sure of one thing, the boulders are not going anywhere unless there is some invisible titan standing about. For as you look more closely, they are in fact, merely the tops of even greater rocks buried in the scree. The do however, make fine hiding points for nearly an infinite supply of enemies. Devlin does not know this particular area over others within the Scab so all manner of the normal creatures could be about. Giants, Orc, Drugear, Wyvern, the cursed undead, Griffon...

As to higher ground, the scree field could probably be navigated in relative safety, the slope is a moderate 15 to 20 degrees. Travelling along the bottom of the cliff through the uneven terrain and loose rock will be far slower easily doubling the journey time. Assuming the terrain remains as it is.

The Road Less Taken Combat Round 1
Thursday January 24th, 2013 10:23:42 PM

The group continues and staggers up the formation somewhat. Careful eyes pick through the stone and rock about them looking for anything that might not be what it first seems. They do not have to wait long. The loose gravel of the scree field explodes just behind a massive granite rock. Pebbles and stones the size of a dwarven fist sail high into the air as if something just impacted the hill with tremendous force.

Emerging from the dust cloud generated from the explosion is a huge armor plated horror. A great fin of metal rises from its back and heavily protected behind great plates of steel, is a great maw filled with teeth the size of daggers.

Lost the post.... Not sure if rolls will magically reappear so you will have to trust me on the first part through Bruagh's attack

Sam continues to Inspire his comrades and casts Glitterdust. The Bulette does not appear adversely affected
Shonti casts a fireball, using his bloodline to convert it to electricity. Inspire Courage only effects weapon damage
Bruagh charges in, getting struck as he does so. Dmg 15 to Bruagh. His axe bites deeply
Dernock looses an arrow on target
Delving begins casting SNA is full round
Oathbreaker fires 2 arrows, striking once
Terser moves past oathbreaker and closes on the Bulette. You cannot charge through occupied squares
Shonto closes up not wanting to be left out. Run has to be a straight line and cannot go through difficult terrain. So I move and moved you

With a savage roar the Bulette attacks Bruagh and tears through the dwarf
Hit ac 27/26/21. Dmg 15/16. Bruagh charged so his AC was 22

Bulette Dmg 48

Devlin finishes his spell and with a flash call into existence a trio of eagles. The creatures orient themselves for a split second before they dive directly into the rear of the armored behemoth fighting the group. One of the birds aim is off and it careens past the creature without effect. The other two are able to sink their talons into exposed flesh between the armor plates.

Raeb stays close to Devlin shielding him with her body, she is wary of attack and waits. Devlin is wary, this lone creature attacked putting itself at a major disadvantage by showing itself. He scans the surrounding looking for any signs of other creatures.

"I told you his weakness was dwarven might! Bring him down!". (Inspire courage +2 continued)

Shonti takes a step to the side, to be able to see around Dernock as his brethren continue their onslaught against the beast. He knows that anything he could do to damage the Bulette would probably just be overkill, so he saves his Arcana for another time. "Sorry brotha, looks like yer axe gonna have ter wait a while yet..." Shonti says to Shinto as he rushes ahead of him, trying to get a piece of the monster before it's killed.

Monday January 28th, 2013 10:30:45 PM

Devlin's eagles soar in from above and Terser and Bruagh's axes lay the bulette low. Oathbreaker can hold onto a couple more arrows and Shonti arrives 6 seconds too late to do more than offer congratulations to the others.

Urval casts Cure Light Wounds and walks over to Bruagh and heals some of the deep cuts left from the creature.

Sam makes his way over to the rest of the group. He looks down at the fresh kill at the dwarves' feet. Never have they encountered something so massive in size. Regardless of its size, it fell like all the others.

"Nothing the Scab can offer will slow the stride of these dwarves that I call my brothers. Their wills are unbreakable."

Sam smiles as he marvels at the brutal strength of his brethren.

"Shall we continue on?", the bard asks with a grin.

Still fearing other threats, Devlin sends the eagles out in an ever widening spiral pattern from their location until they wink out and return to the plane they came from.

Devlin advances on the dead body of the creature with the rest of the group. He studies it for a second before closing his eyes. Opening them his face seems different, almost more peaceful.A creature this size would probably swallow most prey it kills whole. If we had time we could search its stomach for any valuables. He looks up at the sky and blinks. Not that we have a lot of time ta mess with cuttin' this creature open. He says gruffly.

Devlin will follow along with the group when they decide to leave.

DM Jeff O
Tuesday January 29th, 2013 1:54:47 PM

After the group makes quick work of the strange beast, they are quick to congratulate one another. Oathbreaker wonders about the ease with which the thing fell as Braugh looks around to make sure there are no other creatures around.

Seeing none, the group continues their trek through the long, narrow, boulder-filled valley. The sun finally reaches high in the sky and its rays fall on metal armor providing a bit more warmth than is comfortable. However, the sun doesn't stay high in the sky long and the scenery doesn't change all day -- more and more of the long valley with boulders. As the darkness starts to set in, the group realizes that they will need to spend the night in the valley of boulders or march on through the night.

OOC:
Setup and/or preparations for the evening? There's no caves here, just really open ground and rocks. Lots of rocks. Sorry, Devlin, I think our posts crossed in the cyberspace. You can certainly take time to work on the beast with cutting up and the such if you like. It was mid-morning when you were attacked, and you're still likely at least another day from the festival grounds. As the shadows start to grow in the narrow canyon, the group pauses and looks around. Sam says, with derision, "I'd rather start making our way to the festival. The sooner we get there, the sooner we can inquire about Tahni and also finish this 'messenger boy' job."

A cricket starts chirping as Dernork nods and replies, "Yeah an' those who do the hatchet job will need to get cleaned up. I dun think anyone covered in Bullet gore is goin' t'make himself popular with other part goers. An' Dun get me wrong bein' covered in gore is somethin' a dwarven warrior can be proud of." He steps from one foot to the other nervously, ready to get back to the march through the canyon.

Shinto nods, then reaches for his wineskin. He takes a deep drought of the strong rum and says, "Lets keep goin tonight, sleepin in wide open area aint best of ideas lads." He puts the stopper back in his rum with a pop and lets the skin fall to his side where it always seems to be.

Bruagh barely stops before agreeing with the others, "I agree, let's push on through the night and trying and get there tomorrow." Bruagh does stop long enough for Urval to step up to him. He reaches out with a light blue glowing hand and he touches Bruagh on the shoulder three times as he speaks to the others, "Indeed, getting to a position where we can't be ambushed would be nice. Also," he turns back to Braugh, "Let me get you back up to peak as we continue on." Braugh replies, "Thanks for the healing friend. Alright, let's go the show on the road."

Shonti speaks up from the rear of the group, "If it's a vote, i'm fer pushin through t'e night lads. We gotta lotta ground ter cover yet." Devlin agrees, "We could move on through the night. Might make it hard ta be as observant as we need ta be when we get ta the festival. What do the rest of ya think about it?"

With a few more nods, the group continues their travel as the darkness continues to grow. There is not a great deal of cloud cover this night, but the moon is not bright. Looking up from the bottom of the narrow ravine, the stars can be seen far above. The footsteps of the group sound loud echoing against the walls of the cavern. There is the squeak of leather and the clink of metal as the long night continues.

Many hours after dark, Shinto is the first one to spot the dark figures in the dark night. Others hear the flapping of wings shortly thereafter. There are a number of small bats that fly by in small groups overhead. Occasionally there is a squeak, but mostly there is only the sound of the leathery wings.

The night drones on with little change. At times Bruagh stumbles as a rock appears in the darkness out of nowhere, right in front of him. His eyes get bleary as he works to see in the darkness after a long day's march and a long night's march without a break. Everyone is starting to get tired, but Sam is really stumbling as his legs are just worn out. Far into the night, but long before the sun will start to rise, Terser sees some gravel falling from one of the cliffs off to the right. He doesn't see anything else, nor what may have caused the small amount of gravel to fall. Perhaps it was just an animal...

OOC: For the travel through the night, everyone needs to make Constitution checks. To attempt to speed things along, here's the setup -- there's five Constitution checks (spaced about evenly throughout the night). However, the group can actually decide to stop at any point in time. If the group goes on through the entire night, it's five checks for everyone at DC 10, 12, 14, 16, then 18. If you fail, you will take 1d6 nonlethal damage and you receive the fatigued condition (A fatigued character can neither run nor charge and takes a --2 penalty to Strength and Dexterity. Doing anything that would normally cause fatigue causes the fatigued character to become exhausted. After 8 hours of complete rest, fatigued characters are no longer fatigued.) However, the effects are cumulative -- if you fail the first Con check, you're fatigued. If you fail a second one, you're then exhausted (An exhausted character moves at half speed, cannot run or charge, and takes a --6 penalty to Strength and Dexterity. After 1 hour of complete rest, an exhausted character becomes fatigued.) Note that if anyone does fail two checks, they're going to be moving slower, which will create the need for yet one more con check at DC 20 if the group wishes to push on.

These are indeed Con checks. And to recover: if you are exhausted, after 1 hour of complete rest, you will be back to fatigued. If you are fatigued, you need 8 full hours of rest to recover. If the group stops to rest for the full 9 hours, all penalties will be removed. I will assume that if you do stop partway through the night that a rest until lunchtime would likely take care of everyone.

The masked dwarf volunteers for whatever watch he is needed for. He feels fine and paces nervously back and forth in the open valley.

Terser is surprised by his tiredness, but manages to struggle on for several hours, before finally succumbing to the need to rest. When the others start breaking out their tents, he just flops down and immediately starts snoring, having already dismissed the fall of gravel as a harmless critter.

(12 nonlethal, apparently I can only roll max damage against myself)

DM Jeff O  2d6=4 ;

As the group marches on through the night, the banter slows and then stops as the grueling march starts to wear down the group. Sam is the first one to stumble, but he continues on his way. It is not much longer before he starts to slow down, unable to keep up the pace. Soon after Braugh and Dernock are breathing heavy and Dernock stumbles a bit, before grabbing the wall of the canyon to keep from falling over.

The night is late, and it is past midnight when Devlin, Shonti, and Terser start really feeling worn down as well. They can keep going, but they are much relieved when Braugh says, "I'm afraid we are going to have to stop." Shinto stops and drinks some rum, but appears to be ready to continue the march. He pops open his tent and offers it to Sam, saying, "Sleep in me tent, yave earned it lad."

Oathbreaker paces back and forth as Sam falls into the tent, unmoving. Braugh and Dernock are nearly asleep on their feet. When the pause is called, Bruagh falls to the ground with a clunk from his heavy armor. Dernock leans against the wall and seems to be sleeping on his feet, using the wall of the canyon as his bed. No one argues as the group attempts to set up some sort of camp in the middle of the empty canyon. Terser simply lies down on the gravel, happy to not be marching.

OOC: I gather that the group gets really tired and decides to rest after 3 checks. Here is the status of everyone at that point in the night:

Oathbreaker: Fine
Sam: Exhausted, 7 dam
Devlin: Fatigued, 2 dam
Urval: Fine
Braugh: Exhausted, 4 dam
Dernock: Exhausted, 11 dam
Shinto: Fine
Shonti: Fatigued, 1 dam
Terser: Fatigued, 6 dam

I hope you don't mind that I make the assumption that the three that are not affected by the forced march will take the first watch: Oathbreaker, Urval, and Shinto.

After an hour of complete rest (and likely sleep of the dead), those who were exhausted will simply be fatigued (until they rest an additional 8 hours). Remember that if you are fatigued, you cannot run or charge and have a -2 to strength and dexterity. Also note that if you sleep in your armor, you will retain the fatigued condition, despite the rest.

After the first watch of a few hours, it will be the early pre-dawn hours (around 3-4 am or so). What are the plans at that point? Those who are fatigued will not lose that condition if they take a watch at that time, unless the rest continues. In other words, those who are fatigued need 8 hours of rest to eliminate the condition. If you rest for 3 hours, then take watch for 3 hours, then rest 3 hours, you're still short rest and will remain fatigued. For calculations, if someone is inclined, the group stops their march at 1:00 am. The first group can take watch for a longer period of time, but they will require a Fort check to be able to avoid fatigue themselves the next day for lack of sleep!

So I guess the question is, what happens after the initial rest period? Who will continue resting? How long will you rest? Who is sleeping in armor? How long will each character remain resting in the canyon? You really don't know for sure, but you think that the end of the canyon should not be more than a few hours away...Oh, and perception checks, please, from everyone taking a watch.

Devlin -- AC 18/13/16 -- CMD 17 -- HP 48/48(2 NL) --------- Raeb -- AC 19/13/16 -- CMD 22 -- HP 46/46   d20+13=19 ;
Thursday January 31st, 2013 3:38:25 PM

Go ahead and get some sleep lads Raeb and I will keep watch for now. In the morning I can refresh myself with a quick spell and we can be on our way. Looking around for a good spot he says. Lets get our backs against one of the larger stones and settle in. Once the group settles in Devlin casts one of his spells in an arc doing his best to cover any advance by an enemy. As he finishes only those with a sharp eye would notice that any scrub or plants in that area are covered in vicious thorns. With a defense in place The Dwarf settles in for the first watch.

Actions:
Cast Spike growth (lasts 6 hours) in an arc around the group. I can do 6, 20' squares. Best option a huge rock to our backs and cast the growth in a V with us in the middle of the wide part of the V.
Perception = 19
Raeb = Scent
Will cast lesser restoration on myself in the morning.

OOC: Please ignore my d100... Wish I coulda had it for a lotto roll though! ;)
======================================
When the dwarves come to a halt, Shonti finds a suitable rock to sleep by. He unstraps his leather armor as quickly as possible, folds it up, and places it on top of the rock to be used as a pillow. He then places his mask inside of his haversack, using his cloak for a blanket. Within minutes, the Sorcerer is snoring loudly, not a care in the world other than seeing what his mind has in store for his dreams tonight...

Shonti see's himself walking further through the valley he fell asleep in, only now, he's alone. He looks around, and see's that not one of his new friends are with him. He continues on for what seems like hours, walking through the darkness until a blinding flash of light erupts from the depths of his subconcious... Shinto appears to step out of a rock in front of him, and speaks to Shonti, who is now emitting a purple-blueish aura. "Brother, I'm sorry... But there can only be ONE!!"

The Stalwart dwarf then takes a mighty swing at the Sorcerer with his axe, but to no avail. The axe rebounded off of the aura coming from Shonti's body, and Shonti thrust his hand high into the air. "Then we'll die together!" A tiny ball of red light came out of his fingertip. It went straight up into the air, then came back down on top of his brother. When the little red light touched the blade of his axe, it erupted into a huge ball of fire, completely engulfing both of the brothers Zarbadium.

Shonti awakes with a start, sweating heavily from the intensity of his dream. Looking up to the stars of the cloudless night, Shonti whispers a prayer to Gargul before laying his head back on his makeshift rock-pillow.

Shinto nods and waves his hands at Braugh and Sam; Nah lads, get ye strength back eh!? I'll keep watch fer most the night, an get a lil nap in before we head out.

Shinto will take 1st and then help Devlin with 2nd watch as well. After staying up most the night, just in case, he will remove his armor and sleep inside his tent next to Sam; careful not to wake the, no doubt, exhausted gnome.

Assuming the night is uneventful
Shinto awakens, first he fills his Rum flask from his jug, taking a good gulp from the jug before putting it back, mumbling something about needing another one. Then he gives his ax a good wipe down, and finally dons his armor. Careful not to make any mishaps with the dwarven metal.
==============
Shinto perception for 1st watch is 12; 15 for second.

Not sure when or how many checks I'd need for only sleeping 3-4 hours; I forgot these were Fort checks, not Con, so the actual rolls would be 21 and 20 vs DC 15 to not be fatigued.

Urval Torsten: AC23/13/17 - CMD17 - HP54/54

Urval nods at the watch. "I'll drop into my crafting portal again, as before, if you need me poke the portal and I'll drop out. I'm not fatigued yet, so i'll stay up the night and just remove my morning fatigue, just so that those who need it can take it."

OOC: Spends 8 hours crafting, then uses lesser restoration in the morning to remove the fatigue from doing so.

Terser awakens for the second watch as normal, and realizes he hasn't rested well because of his armor. It's still better than before though. mayhaps I need to practice that, or find some way to sleep more comfortably in me breastplate. (or maybe take an endurance feat, haha)

After his watch, he will remove his armor and drop back into a more restful slumber.

Climb: take 10 for 15

DM Jeff O
Friday February 1st, 2013 3:07:23 PM

The silence of the night is broken by various tones and rates of snoring by the exhausted group of dwarves. Devlin casts a spell and props himself up against the wall of the canyon, blinking his tired eyes repeatedly as he takes the first watch. Shinto pokes him on occasion to ensure that he's staying awake and watching, though nothing seems to change throughout the dark night.

Hours later, Devlin drops to the ground, clearly more tired than he had let on. Shinto goes over to Terser to wake him for watch, but when he arrives, Terser's eyes are already open. His shoulders crack as he stands up, still in his armor and he nods to Shinto. The two of them take watch as the others continue to snore loud enough to cover up any other sounds that might be happening in the night.

A short time later, Shinto is watching up the canyon (in the direction of travel where the group has not yet been). When he blinks his eyes, he suddenly sees a group of figures moving towards the group. It is still quite dark, though there are signs that the long night will soon end as the horizon, as much as can be seen from the deep canyon, is starting to lighten up just a little. From what Shinto can see, the figures are about man-sized and moving towards the group in relative silence -- there is the occasional sound of what might be leather squeaking as they move. They are about a hundred feet away or so when Shinto spots them.

OOC:
1:00 AM -- Group ends the forced march. Initial watch occurs: Devlin, Shinto, and Oathbreaker.
Devlin casts spike growth.
2:00 AM -- Those with the exhausted condition, sound asleep, change to just being fatigued.
5:00 AM -- Watch changes: Devlin & Oathbreaker go to sleep, Shinto stays on watch, Terser joins the watch.
5:30 AM -- Group approaches

Updates on Status of characters:

Devlin: Fatigued, 2 nonlethal damage, asleep.
Dernock: Fatigued, 11 nonlethal damage, no armor, sound asleep.
Sam: Fatigued, 7 nonlethal damage, snoring loudly.
Shonti: Fatigued, 1 nonlethal damage, no armor, rolling around and mumbling in his sleep.
Braugh: Fatigued, 4 nonlethal damage, no armor, snoring quietly.
Shinto: Fine, but tired, armored, awake on watch.
Urval: Hanging out in crafting portal, Fine.
Terser: Fatigued, 6 nonlethal damage, armored, awake on watch.
Oathbreaker: Fine, sleeping quietly.

As some of the group start to rise and stand, the figures continue to grow closer. When they are about 60 feet away (not quite to the barbs), you can hear the one in the front say, "Here now, what's this?" He calls out to the group, "Hey there! What ere you doing up there? 'Ave you seen any kids 'round here?"

There is the sound of flint on steel and a couple lanterns quickly light, shining light against the walls of the cavern. Those you can see of the newcomers are human. There are around half a dozen of them, and they wear armor and swords.
