Sam and Oathbreaker point their weapons into the darkness, but even with their darkvision they see nothing ahead but a tunnel

Devlin too takes aim, but not before making sure he isn't a target himself

Bruagh tries the diplomatic approach, but whoever it is stays silent. Shinto tries a slightly less diplomatic approach.

Terser, Kyachi and Sarnak move to the rear and stay out of line of sight

Sam tries to determine the race and dialect of the speaker. The language is common and spoken fluently in a male voice - in a much higher pitch/tone that you'd expect from an adult human. Trying to determine the specific dialect is too difficult for Sam and he is unable to tell the race of the speaker, but the voice does sound familiar. If Sam had to take a guess, he would say that it sounded a bit similar to the imp from Drakesmeade.

Whoever or whatever spoke before does not speak again and cannot be seen or heard.

Devlin nods to Taggert than nods down the tunnel. He mouths, Thirty feet to Oathbreaker than sets his sights down the tunnel. He covers Tag's advance with his crossbow.

Seeing the sneakier of the group advance, Bruagh sets himself up on the front line to protect the rest of the group should something press and assault. Raeb flanks him and his shield and axe are at the ready.

The Oathbreaker nods, placing his hand on his chest and casting Aspect of the Falcon (+3 Perception, +1 to ranged attacks) on himself. His eyes grow wide and feathers sprout from his hair as he makes his way into the tunnel, his bow and arrow held out before him. The masked dwarf breathes a sigh of relief as he once again finds himself underground.

Seeing the Oathbreaker entering the tunnel in "stealth mode", Shonti is almost noticeably frightened by what his wild imagination is picturing ahead... He sticks to the wall just outside the doorway, and is breathing deeply, mentally preparing himself for whatever might be. "Watch it Shinto! You'll get us all killed with that tone.." He says to his brother, just above a whisper.

Oathbreaker takes point, with Devlin not far behind. The rest of the party fall in line with Dernock bringing up the rear

The tunnel twists and turns, weaving its way into the ground. Small tunnels - too small for even the smallest of gnomes - open and close along the way. Oathbreaker pulls up where the 'main' tunnel looks to split in multiple directions. Four separate paths, no wait, five. No, that fifth one rejoins with the fourth not far ahead. Though the third one looks to split off in multiple directions too.

These tunnels form some sort of catacomb-like, labyrinthine network. They look naturally formed. It would be extremely easy for the party to get lost in here for many a day.

A voice echoes through the current tunnel, but even the super keen senses of Oathbreaker can't see the source in this maze "Oh, watch out for that symbol of pain at the entrance. What, you found it already? Never mind then..." Sam is now quite sure that it belongs to the imp Brann from Drakesmeade. Between Brann, the duergar, undead, necromancers and the possible demon child - Sam is confident he will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. Star Wars reference back at Sam :)

Could I have a marching order please -
1. For when the party are single-file (5ft wide. Note large creatures will need to use the squeezing rules in such cases)
2. For when the party can stand side-by-side (10ft wide).

The tunnels size varies as you walk, and it could be either at any time. Flying above someone would also be unlikely.

Note the pain effect remains still too

Sarnak and Kyachi both look to the small tunnels, wondering about them as they proceed with the group. Sarnak tries to think of if there are any magical creatures known for making labyrinthine tunnel networks, or that dig in general.

Shonti keeps close to the "inside" of the group, to make sure that he is well protected from either front or back. "Maybe we should leave a trail to follow back? Just in case we get lost, we'll know where we've been." Shonti suggests to the Oathbreaker as our group comes to this multi-fork in the tunnel.

The Oathbreaker nods, closing his eyes and murmuring a short prayer to Eberyon. The party feels their feet tingle, and notice that they now leave no trace. Kneeling down, the masked dwarf attempts to find any tracks leading down any of the tunnels, and listens intently for any noise coming from any of them.

Question from Sam: Does Oathbreaker have to be in front to track?

Normally I would say yes, or the DC would go up by the footprints the others are making ahead of him. However, since using Terrain Bond means noone else is leaving tracks then I would rule Oathbreaker could track from the middle of the pack and forwards. Tracking from the rear wouldn't really make sense and could mean wrong turns, backtracking, etc.

The group discuss next steps. Should they pick a path at random? Should the imp be ignored?

Shonti suggests leaving a trail so the group can find their way back

Sam challenges Brann to show himself, but to no avail

Sarnak tries to recall his teachings about underground animals. A number come to mind that could form tunnels and passages such as these. A Crysmal or a small grick would be two likely candidates, but this is just speculation as there don't seem to be any tracks or scat left behind to examine. That said, they could just as likely be natural. These tunnels do seem rather old.

Oathbreaker is able to find a number of sets of footprints - no one set to follow. On closer examination he discerns that one particular trail seems to have a lot of traffic, whereas the footprints on the other trails all seem to be too uniform - decoys, perhaps. He is confidant he can track this set, for now at least.

And so the party march on, following the footprints that Oathbreaker had found. The catacomb like maze continues with no end - or even destination - obvious.
(Survival rolls to keep from getting lost please. Also please state whether you are going with Shonti's suggestion of leaving a trail of your own or anything like that)

Raeb 'sucks it in' as she squeezes through some of the more narrower tunnels. Without darkvision or a light source, the bear lacks the grace that dwarves and gnomes seem to have underground. Chuckles too, bumps into things that he can't see in this darkness.

Bruagh takes point, though must have gotten some dirt in his eyes as his vision is not very good. That, and Brann proves to be distracting.

"I'm glad you're here, really. These necromancers make terrible conversationalists. At least Mr. Sam is here to sing all these nice songs about how great you folks are. Not that they're going to stop you from being torn to pieces before this is all over, but they're great songs!" the imps voice echoes in the darkness and he remains unseen by the party.

As Raeb steps forward there is a simultaneous flash of white light about 40ft ahead of Raeb and 40ft behind Dernock. After the bright light fades a red rune can be seen glowing on the wall ahead. A matching red rune is visible behind the party. Terser and Dernock are fairly confident it wasn't there a few moments ago.

"Now you've done it" cackles Brann.

Er... can someone inform me o' the significance o' what seems t'be smoke being absorbed by the walls? Sort o' near that blasted rune? he then asks surreptitiously.

Smoke into the wall? Sounds mighty suspicious to me. Those runes can't be a good thing though. It doesn't seem to be doing anything yet. He looks around the party to see if anyone is reacting to the flash or the runes.

Sarnak and Kyachi come into the room with everyone else, as Kyachi spots and falls under the effect of the rune. Sarnak spots it, and quickly realizing that her being affected by a unknown effect may not be a good idea, as he readies a action to dismiss her before anything horrible happens or if it appeared that she may be teleported

Kyachi, upon failing the save, suddenly starts complanining about the group in general. why couldn't Devlin see the rune, why do we have a bear following us, why do we even care about said bear, etc. Sarnak, already suspecting something amiss, has his suspicions confirmed and immediately dismisses Kyachi, not giving the chance for her to get off more than a couple sentences before winking out of existence.

"Ok, what just hit her and how long until it expires? Magical traps are never kind and never just a inconvenience, and I did not want to find out just what happens if we let her stay compromised. I know she has issues with compulsions, I've found that out so many times prior that it's not worth chancing it."

OOC: Kyachi makes playful jabs occasionally, but it's very rare for her to get angry and to stay angry for more than a moment, so her becoming very angry and lashing out at all others would have raised massive red flags to Sarnak, thus the dismissal. Also, do spells carry over through the dismissal? (Is she now angry in her home plane?)

Devlin sees the runes pop into existence but any effect they may have are lost on the rogue. He keeps an eye out for danger and says softly. If anyone knows what those are speak up. We need ta keep moving.

Taking up the rear of the group followed only by Devlin, the Frozen Soul rests upon Shinto's shoulder. He looks around as much as possible until Brann begins taunting them yet again. He removes his axe from its resting place on his shoulder and slaps the shaft of it into his other hand repeatedly as he lets out a low growl-like rumble, obviously agrivated with the imp. "In the name of Domi, show yourself, trickster! Or leave us alone!!"

"Aarrgghh!"
He shouts out surprised by the flash of light, as he pulls his shield from his back and sets his feet apart in a battle stance. As the light fades and the runes appear, he grumbles "Curse this evil magic!" as the effects of the runes begin to take hold of him.

Shonti completely ignores the imp, "Nevermind that damned imp brothers, he's just tryin to slow us down. We need to keep pressing on." He tries to further motivate everyone to continue into tue tunnels and pay no attention to Brann's questionable conversation..

When the light flashes, followed immediately by new runes appearing behind and in front of our group, Shonti quickly speaks up. "Everyone hold still, lets not trigger this if we don't have too." He gets a good look at the rune behind them, since it's easier to see than the one up ahead. Any information he can tell about the runes is immediatly shared with the party.

The group freeze, tensions are high as they wait to see what the runes will do.

Dernock decides that Gargul's imp has better jokes than Brann and asks the others what they think of the smoke he saw. He doesn't seem as concerned by the runes.

Oathbreaker goes on high alert, pointing his arrow up and down the tunnel. The only thing he senses from Brann is the imps enjoyment. It seems genuinely happy to see the party here.

Sam goes quiet waiting to see what will happen. He feels fine. Everyone else seems fine. Chuckles seems fine - but how can you tell what's going through the mind of a hyena? (Sam - please check your email!)

Terser tries to identify the runes, but they are foreign to him. Magical no doubt, but nothing he has encountered or read of before. He watches each member of the party carefully, but other than Kyachi's mouth, nothing catches his eye.

Bruagh and Raeb hold their position at the front of the group, but do not advance yet.

Kyachi has a bit of a whine and a moan, at which point Sarnak decides he has had enough and banishes her. Something must have gotten in to her. But what exactly? And perhaps more pressingly, how can he avoid it? (You had readied an action to dismiss Kyachi "before anything horrible happens or if it appeared that she may be teleported". Since those conditions were not met, you can use your next round action to dismiss her)

Devlin is as surprised as anyone, and asks for the magic-users to speak up with an explanation.

Shinto and Shonti argue over Brann. Shonti is certain the rune is of the "Symbol of" spell path, but it isn't one he has seen or heard of before. He urges the party to stand perfectly still in case it is triggered again. (Shinto - please check your email!)

The tunnel is quiet. Not even Brann speaks up. The party stand silent waiting to see what will happen next.

OOC: I think i made this post a bit too soon given it didn't really apply yesterday, so reposting it

Kyachi, upon failing the save, suddenly starts complaining about the group in general. why couldn't Devlin see the rune, why do we have a bear following us, why do we even care about said bear, etc. Sarnak, already suspecting something amiss, has his suspicions confirmed and....

immediately dismisses Kyachi, not giving the chance for her to get of more than a couple sentences before winking out of existence.

"Ok, what just hit her and how long until it expires? Magical traps are never kind and never just a inconvenience, and I did not want to find out just what happens if we let her stay compromised. I know she has issues with compulsions, I've found that out so many times prior that it's not worth chancing it."

<Editted by DM Rob. Clarification on the rules board received that temp effects do expire so the action you planned works out just fine>

OOC: Kyachi makes playful jabs occasionally, but it's very rare for her to get angry and to stay angry for more than a moment, so her becoming very angry and lashing out at all others would have raised massive red flags to Sarnak, thus the dismissal.

Also, do spells carry over through the dismissal? (Is she now angry in her home plane?) DM Rob: Yep :) Look out other eidolons!

After a short examination of the runes, Shonti points out to the group, "They're symbols.. Similar to the Symbol of Pain that was at the front door, or others. I'm not completely sure how they work, but I don't think we should stick around and find out. Let's move out brothers! The party take stock of the situation.

Sarnak has dismissed Kyachi, wary that she wasn't acting herself.

Oathbreaker urges the party to continue onwards, to which Devlin and Terser agree.

Sam looks aorund, and seeing noone is hurt, he reassures Chuckles that all is well.

Shonti shares what he knows of the symbols, which at the moment seems to be very little.

Dernock does not share the enthusiasm of the group and suggests preparing a bit more first. He looks to be overruled by the majroity

Shinto gives Dernock an earful, ready to beat some courage into the rogue.

Bruagh scans for evil Highlight to display spoiler: {You detect a lingering aura of moderate evil. What's more, the aura seems to be all through this particular section of tunnel - from as far as 60ft behind you through to 60ft ahead of you. Assuming Bruagh been doing this at random intervals during the journey, he would know that there was no such aura earlier}

The party only make it a few more feet towards the rune ahead of them before Bruagh stops the party again. It is now 30ft ahead of Bruagh and Raeb

Sarnak & Terser: please make Will saves vs DC16 or 'something happens' :) This is not a spell or spell like ability.

Sam tries to keep everyone focused on the task at hand, but looks to be largely ignored by the rest.

Sarnak - email sent. please also let me know when/if you want to resummon Kyachi and to where

Bruagh's dwarvy-senses are tingling with the evil in the area, but he can't see a source as yet.

Dernock responds in jest to Shinto's words, perhaps suspecting something is amiss. Shonti whipsers a message to him, confirming those suspicions but tries to reason with his brother.

Oathbreaker moves to the front and urges the party to keep moving and to leave this place.

Terser feels uncomfortable and prepares for 'something' (You didn't specify what spell you wanted to ready. Also note that in single file, there will be people in the way should you want to target someone in particular)

A couple of things then happen...

Oathbreaker sees something up ahead that he can't quite explain. Terser sees the same behind the party Highlight to display spoiler: {Like a form made of smoke or shadow crossed the tunnel ahead and another behind you. They seemed to come out of the walls on one side and disappear into the opposite walls. Each looked to be around 20ft away (from the front and back respecitvely)}.

Though he can't see anything, Bruagh feels a chill run down his spine as the evil in the area seems to intensify

Shinto has finally had enough of Dernock's attitude and delivers a half-hearted blow with his axe. Dernock though was prepared, and the attack was easily dodged. (Attack vs AC21: 14 = Miss)

Brann's familiar voice echoes through the caverns "Fight, fight, fight!"

Praying to Domi, Terser points at Shinto and attempts to halt his actions long enough to restrain him. However, upon seeing the shadows in the corridor, he doesn't wish for someone to be left helpless. They are behind us as well, prepare yourselves! He casts another spell, hoping to break Shinto from whatever spell he is under, so they won't be fighting an ally and an enemy at the same time.

(regardless of the success of the first spell, cast protection from evil on Shinto afterwards. Hopefully it will grant him another save (at +2). 14 to hit his touch AC if necessary)

"Come on Shinto! I'll cast a spell on you that I can't undo either!!" He yells at his brother, trying to intimidate him with his knowledge of magic. He then pauses for a minute before Shonti points behind Shinto and Dernock and yells, "That Symbol's making you think evil thoughts Shinto. We've got to leave now!"

He pulls slightly on his brothers shoulder after he tries to get a better look up the hall when he points it out to Shinto, looking for anything new and again to identify the symbol. We've got enough enemies down here.. Let alone Shinto!

Bruagh and Raeb push forward, keen to get past the symbol

Oathbreaker, Sam and Devlin also follow suit.

Oathbreaker fears other things in the tunnels, and draws a more deadlier arrow.

Sam tries to get Bruagh's attention to what is going on at the rear. Perhaps he is fearful that if they stop now the party will self-combust?

Devlin also is in the mood to get away from the blasted symbols. He draws his blades in anticipation of close quarters combat.

Dernock takes Shinto's blow in his stride, and retaliates only so much as he has to - choosing to deal non-lethal damage (Shinto please note the 13 non-lethal damage).

Shinto, for his part, seems a bit dazed by the attack as his return is weak at best, and glances harmlessly off Dernock's armor. Wanting a real fight though, Shinto calls for Bruagh to step up and try his hand.

Shonti tries to help his brother come to his senses, but to no avail.

Terser tries to clear Shinto's mind, but the old dwarf is strong willed and the spells effect does little to change his current demeanor.

Sarnak seems to be following Dernock's suit, and also finds something to gripe about.

Half the party have now moved forward, yet the other half remain in place.

And just when things couldn't get any worse... they do.

The smoke emerges from out of the walls and take on vaguely humanoid shapes. One figure in front of Bruagh & Raeb, and one figure behind Dernock. Both have red glowing eyes and reach out smokey limbs to attack!

Entity#1 reaches out and seems to pass its hand right through Raeb's nose! (Ethereal attack vs AC8*: 15=Hit. Raeb takes 6pts damage!Highlight to display spoiler: {Please note the squeezing rules for a large creature in a medium sized space: --4 penalty on attack rolls and a --4 penalty to AC})

Entity#2 reaches out against Dernock. Flanked by Shinto, the rogue has difficulty defending himself (Etheral attack vs AC14: 13 + 2 flanking = Hit. Dernock takes 2pts damage!)

Hearing Sarnak's change in attitude, Sam decides to test him.

"Sarnak. Can you summon Kyachi to help Dernock?"

Action-Wait maneuver on Sarnak. If Sarnak attacks Sam or Terser, Sam will attempt to "fascinate" him. If not, Sam will "inspire courage" to the group.

At the appearance of our new more ghastly company, Shonti raises his hand and points it just overtop of his brothers head, towards the Entity. "Be gone with your wicked sorcery. Burn! He yells at the creature as a thin jet-stream like ray of flames erupts from the business end of his rod, likely giving Shinto a second thought about playing around with magic anytime soon.
"We'll deal with this later brother." is all Shonti says after the ray leaves his fingertips.

Oathbreaker is surprised - a rare occurence for the ranger - and his ordinary arrows fly right through the apparition.

Bruagh and Raeb fight hard, but their weapons do nothing against these creatures. The paladin is frustrated by the in-fighting when there are enough enemies already to go around.

Shinto decides to buff himself up. He's going to kill something today - Dernock, Bruagh or one of these creatures. He pulls a potion from his pack - BUT - before he can drink it he is knocked out cold by Dernock. (Shinto - you can keep the potion for later if you like)

Devlin anxiously taps his blades together, ready to get into the fight - if only there was an opening.

Terser calls on the divine to remove these abominations from his sight (the smokey things, not the party). Small pieces of smoke tear away from the Incorporeal creatures.

Sarnak ignore the perils at either end of the party and instead tries to "elf slap" Terser, challenging him to fisticuffs.

Seeing things take a turn for the worse, Sam tries to fascinate Sarnak (Sam please advise the DC. Sarnak please make the save before your next action)

Shonti releases a powerful blast of flames, however misses the smokey form!

The creatures attack again...

Entity#1 reaches out with its other hand against Raeb again. The 'arm' seems to pass right through the bears head! (Incorporeal attack vs AC8*: 12=Hit. Raeb takes 4pts damage!)

Entity#2 lashes at Dernock again. It is difficult for the rogue to tell which parts of the creatures are limbs and which are not, and he ends up taking a puff of smoke to his shoulder (Incorporeal attack vs AC14: 19=Hit. Dernock takes 4pts damage!)

Blast it, I missed! Dernock, they don't seem to be effected by physical attacks! They might be shadow creatures, or some sort of incorporeal monsters. Either way, I think only magic will harm them. Shonti says in response to Dernock's questions about the creatures. He tries to identify them better, and think of anything else he might be able to remember or determine about them.
"I said, BURN!" Shonti yells again at the entity as he raises his other hand this time, with his Rod of Empower clenched tight in his fist. Another thin ray of flames erupts from the business end of his rod, and shoots at the entity.

Sam starts to move his arms and hum a foreign tune (anyone else picturing a very strange looking belly dancer?). It has the desired effect as Sarnak seems mesmerised by the performance. Sam then mixes it up by doing the ol' pull-your-thumb-off trick.

Dernock attacks the shadowy form, and is surprised to see pieces of smoke fall and disappear from the creature as his attacks seem to do damage.

Terser (sorry, but as you don't have reach you cannot make an attack through Dernock. You can keep sound burst as a prepared spell)

Oathbreaker questions whether weapons actually harm these creatures, but gets his answer when he sees his arrow tear a sizeable chunk of shadow matter away.

Shonti's aim is true this time, and the fire burns away at his target. As he watches the fire pass through the creature and its 'eyes' become an even darker red, it occurs to him that these may be creatures he has read of before. Darnocs

Both creatures emit a terrible wail as they attack again (Everyone to make a Will save vs DC15 or be shaken for 18rounds. This is a fear effect

The Darnoc at the front reaches out to attack the holy warrior in front of it (Incorporeal attack vs AC12: 19=Hit. Bruagh takes 4pts damage!)

The Darnoc at the rear attacks Dernock yet again (Incorporeal attack vs AC14: 15=Hit. Dernock takes 5pts damage!)

Both beings seem smaller in size than when they first attacked.

Shintos mind flashes through different phases of his life.

He stands in the 3rd row of the 6th column among 10 rows and columns of warrior dwarves. Armed with a battle axe and small metal shield, everyone spaces out and begin their dangerous sparring. A black haired dwarf swings, but Shinto ducks and delivers a well placed uppercut with the small shield. A diving roll to his left, catching his opponents hip with his ax as he stands back up. Yer no match fer me Gallos!

FLASH

Shinto and Shonti now battle a small group of goblins somewhere within the Scab. The largest of the four goblins wielding a two handed sword. The others armed with hammers and wooden shields. Shinto looks much like he does now, complete with the Frozen Soul. Shonti unchanged as well.

The largest charges at Shinto, only to be met by his large shield blocking a vicious blow, and then the frozen soul slicing open and the freezing closed, a nasty wound on his chest. Shonti lets loose a stream of rock and debris at the other three. Causing various cuts and bruises. Meanwhile Shinto trips and beheads the leader. Then charges another, cleaving its arm off. Shonti lets another stream of rocks fly. Some smash into Shintos shield.

FLASH

Shinto and Shonti are running through a dark tunnel. Followed by multiple pursuers screaming at them Yell never catch the Zarbadium Brothers! HAHAHA! Shinto screams back as they round a bend and cut right through a split tunnel. Then, just ahead, little red beady eyes are seen at the end of the tunnel, nearing the two brothers. I think they gettin us bro. Shonti says preparing a spell, and back to back the two brothers battle Duergar for their lives.

FLASH

Shinto awakens in a Drakesmead cell. Unarmed and hurting, his brother next to him still sleeping. What have me done....

Shonti relays to the group what he can remember about the Darnocs. "I think I've read about these things before! They're undead creatures called Darnocs. They can be incorporeal at times, meaning physical attacks would have little to no effect against them. They possess the spirits of those that they kill, so we won't be so quickly makin another trip to see Gargul if one of us dies here... Defend yourselves well brothers! "

If possible, Shonti will step around his brothers unconscious body on the ground, and reach just past (or step around) Dernock with his right hand, not wielding the rod, shouting "Eat dirt, you demon!" At the Darnoc in front of him. Gravel, dirt, and small rocks fly out of Shonti's hand in a cone shape, through the entity and down the hallway past it.

If not possible, Shonti will instead switch out his rod of empower with his CLW Wand out of his handy haversack.

Despite the fear, Sam continues to put on a show for Sarnak who watches intently (email sent to Sarnak)

Dernock attacks again with renewed vigour seeing as his previous attacks worked so well.

Terser tries to hit it with his axe, but with Dernock moving around in front of him, the blow seems to miss the mark.

Shinto's mind recalls many different life events - and not a maiden amongst them (Shinto is awarded a hero point for posting creativity! A great post particularly when your character had nothing to do but remain unconscious)

Though scared himself, Devlin does what he can to intimidate the undead, but doesn't see much success (fyi - A Nat1 on a skill check is not an auto-failure. 16 to Intimidate one of these undead though is a failure)

Oathbreaker draws the string on his bow to maximum to release two arrows that would skewer a normal man. Though they pass through the darnoc, it now appears significantly weaker for it.

Bruagh and Raeb, both having felt the touch of the darnoc fight back once again.

Feeling a little scared himself, Shinto swaps out his rod for a wand

The darnocs both wail amidst the barrage from the party. Seemingly coordinated, they both withdraw into the stone walls of the tunnel (Withdraw action does not provoke an AoO). The evil chill that ran down Bruagh's spine starts to subside.

The glowing runes, however, remain in place.

From somewhere in the tunnels comes Brann's disappointed voice "Awwwww"

I be guessin' the best course o' action is to get Shinto out o' this minefield then wake 'im up. he asks and then Shinto's body on his back. *Ooph* Dun Worry he ain't that heavy he shrugs trying to dismiss any concerns about his back.

OoC Not sure where everything fits but Dernock should be in the upper end of a medium load (134-266 lbs) if most of Shinto's gear fits into his bag.

Here, Dernock, let me help ya! Shonti says as he begins stuffing his brothers belongings into Dernock's pack. Don't knock his head on too many walls eh? His mind blank for a few moments, until he's hoisted onto Dernocks back, which causes his 'mind screen' to flip and static with ever jarring movement. Shinto's lifeless body hanging from Dernocks shoulders is a most amusing sight, as the warrior clerics mouth hangs open, slobber running down Dernock as well.

Shinto starts to get a bit pale, his eyes still closed and breathing heavily through his slobber.

Devlin still fears the area is not safe and urges the party to keep moving. Bruagh readily agrees and looks to mobilise everyone as quickly as possible.

Sam allows Sarnak to come out of the daze, but keeps a crossbow at hand - just in case. Sarnak stares blankly for a moment before coming out of the fascinate effect.

Dernock is able to carry Shinto's unconscious form over his shoulders. Judging by the weight, Dernock would probably be right in assuming Shinto rarely misses a meal.

Shonti tries to aid Dernock carry his brother, though is still wary as to how Sarnak will now respond.

Oathbreaker has finally had it with Brann and despite his usual calm and quiet demeanor allows himself a moment to vent his rage. (Oathbreaker: can I get a survival check to pick up the trail again please? Can you also confirm for me that the effect that means the rest of the party don't leave tracks also affects Raeb and Chuckles?)

Either the imp heard the ranger or just wants to continue taunting the party. "Did you remember to say goodbye to your loved ones before you left? I doubt there will be enough of your remains left to bury, and the people you leave behind have a much harder time when they don't get to say goodbye" The imps tone seems noticeably more cruel now. His prior mockery and laughter look to have been replaced by spite and malice.

It is likely some fell curse, either from those signs, or from the shadow creatures. Either way, it seems to be beyond my power to heal. It seems my faith is not strong enough. Terser seems a bit ashamed of himself for failing at the healing. He is uncharacteristically quiet when the group continues their trek through the tunnels.

Shonti is very obviously not enjoying telling Braugh and Dernock about their cursed state, barely able to look them in the eyes to break the news.

"Let's press on.. No sense wasting anymore time around these symbols. Try to keep an eye out for more of 'em eh? They seem to be common down here. Shonti takes his place in line as they continue forward, wanting to put as much space between them and the symbols as possible.

Shinto awakens with the burst of healing, and it has done little to brighten his mood. Both he and Sarnak continue their verbal tirade against seemingly innocent members of the party. It takes some time, but eventually both calm down enough that the party can motivate them to move far past the symbols.

Oathbreaker is able to rediscover the trail of footprints he had been following and sets to work guiding the party.

Shonti speculates that the reason certain wounds haven't healed is because of the touch of the darnocs. Terser takes the problem with healing the party personally, and questions whether his faith is strong enough.

The party continue through the tunnels wary of more danger. The noise made by both Shinto and Sarnak would surely give away the position of the party should anyone be listening. Brann evidently is, and the bickering seems to have lightened his mood again. "You didn't happen to pack any soothe syrup did you? Ha ha ha... you're going to need it!" His chuckles that were echoing in the tunnels slowly fades, as if he is moving away.

It takes some time, but Shinto and Sarnak both calm down and return to their "rational" selves. After navigating many, many more turns, twists and forked paths, the effects of the pain symbol also fade from those affected.

No matter how far the party travel though, Bruagh can't shake the feeling that evil is always nearby. Perhaps the darnocs are following the party behind the walls? Perhaps its something else?

The tunnel Oathbreaker eventually directs the party down abruptly ends - the passage blocked by a large iron door. Some light can be seen peaking under the door, as well as through the keyhole. Devlin can see no movement, nor can he hear any noise from the other side.

Shinto finally calms down and starts to actually see what kind of situation the party is actually in..

Some o'us is cursed, evils followin me foot steps. I don like the looks of it lads. Seemingly not remembering a single minute of the time he spent rambling and fighting with his team, he doesn't think to apologize for something he doesn't know he'd done.

I aint feelin to well though, so I know the looks can't be good. Need to get back in shape ey? So, how long we been following dem tracks Tag? Shinto then takes his newly bought wand out, tapping himself a few times (5) in the chest with it.

When the party finally stops at the large Iron door, Shinto raises his ax in the air and stamps his foot on the ground, Wut ye seein? I don't like being in line, in a narrow hallway. Smushed against a door, lets open it ey?

Sarnak, once the fuzz of the symbol of anger left him, would start by apologizing to the group for it, and telling them that if anything similar were to happen to him in the future, feel free to knock him out or refascinate him, he wouldn't mind.

Upon reaching the door, Sarnak would take the moment's pause to begin resummoning Kyachi, instead of the portal appearing this time it would seem as if her form was slowly being constructed from the ambient magic around them, small flickers of light coalescing into the form of her 4 paws, then moving upward and forming her body slowly over the span of the minute, with her wings outstretched upwards as it progressed. once the final feather had materialized at the topmost portion of her wing, the familiar rune appears on both Sarnak and Kyachi's forehead as she comes to life and shakes her body for a moment, fluttering her wings as well before standing tall with her wings closed on her back. "Hmm, Glad to be back." She looks to Sarnak for a moment. " And good call, I demolished a couple trees back home before that spell lifted."

Sturdy doors in evil places never fail to bring out the paranoia in any adventurer; our heroes are no exception. Devlin and Oathbreaker both investigate it for mundane traps while Shonti confirms it contains no magical traps.

Oathbreaker deduces it's safe, but is indeed locked. It is a good lock. No, it's a fantastic lock. It's a lock someone paid a great sum of money for to keep some piece of mind. It is absolutely no match for Devlin. No doubt a warm sense of satisfaction floods through him as he expertly picks it open. It's unlikely his companions know just impressive that was; the dwarf just makes it look easy.

Terser takes a moment to ponder why these companions of his aren't healing like they should. He investigates the wounds, but does not find them festering. Disease seems unlikely. As near as he can tell, the negative energy from the undead is blocking the healing. Some would call it a curse.

Sarnak invites his now calm eidolon to rejoin them. Luckily Kyachi is indeed her old self.

With a satisfying final click, the door stands ready to be open.

Bruagh, tough and armored as he is, strides in first as the door swings open without a sound. Several pairs of keen dwarven eyes scan the room for danger, but find nothing ready to attack.

In fact, it takes some time to realize just what's in this room. It's fairly large, maybe 30' square. There are several very large glass vessels along the walls filled with a clear liquid. At first glance, they appear to each contain a duergar corpse. Several are missing large chunks of flesh, others significantly less worse for wear. Those with faces all show they died in considerable agony.

As the party filters in & gets a better look, it's plain to see that those aren't duergar in the vats. They're dwarves, only their skin is as jet black as Tina's son's was.

Seeing your brethren in this state, seeing their remains desecrated in such a fashion, well...it's enough to turn anyone's stomach. Our heroes are no exception.

Will save DC20. Failure by 5 or less indicates a sickened condition. More than 5 indicates a nauseated condition. 1d4 rounds either way.

Sam, on the other hand, feels no distress here. His conscious mind surely revolts along with his companions, but there's an internal peace. No, more than that. There's an internal fascination.

Shonti walks into the room behind most of the group, and is slightly more prepared to see something vile as he notices the Oathbreaker spewing chunks just around the corner of the door. He is nonetheless horrified and disgusted by the sight once he notices his brethren in these vessels, but he is able to hold himself together. "Gargul, my Lord... I beg of you, Please have mercy upon their souls..."

Shonti advances further into the room, looking around for any magical auras, or anything else noteworthy. He stops within 10' of the nearest dwarf suspended in the liquid, not wanting to get too close. He tries to determine what the liquid inside of the vessels is, and what it's doing to the dwarves inside of it if he can.

Devlin easily sneaks into the room and glances around. His eyes take in the horrors contained within the vats and he instantly walls off the the images and contains them within his mind. His mind is quick but flashes of Riddleport still come back to the surface. He shakes his head to clear it and finds a well hidden spot to cover the group from.

I'm loosin' it if sights like this have become mundane. I need ta find me some beauty something else ta fill my thoughts when atrocities like this pop up.

OOC: Short post today. Headed on a monthly two-hour trek to Vanderbilt Children's Hospital for my daughter.

The sound of Sam's small, Gnomish fists hitting the glass reverberates through the room. Luckily, the vat's occupant doesn't seem to mind. From this vantage, Sam notices the tiny pieces of flesh missing from the corpses. They are neat and surgical in nature, obviously the result of study on these remains.

Several of our heroes just can't keep it together. More than one meal is spilt on the floor.

Shonti and Terser check for magic in the room. Nothing overt, but there is a whole lot of residual necromancy here. Nothing to investigate, but this place has seen a lot of the stuff.

Devlin decides to take to the shadows. Those still able to act notice they've reached a dead end. No obvious exit leads from the room.

I hope yer wrong lad; The mere sight'o tese... things... makin me feel bit'o queasy. Not good fer battle ey?

He walks about the room a bit; Searching for some clues to give him an idea of how this.... Person, Necromancer, Duergar, Murderer, Evil... was able to do such a thing. He looks on the tables or desks for instruments or tools that may have been used to cut flesh so precise.

Shield and Frozen Soul still in hand, he finally stops near the center of the room, facing the doorway and the rest of the team. He trys to keep his composer and think of what to do from here. But the sight of his brethren in the liquid just won't leave his mind. Looking at his alive brothers, he sees each of them with missing patches of flesh, and dark skin.

He shakes his head roughly, his face skewed and distorted in a sickened look as he speaks softly; Only way outs the way we came... What ta' do? Where ta go?

Kyachi sees the tubes, and is somewhat mortified, but given it was not of her race it didn't affect her ad badly as the other Dwarves

Hearing they may have company, the companions get into position. Well, those who are able to concentrate do.

Seeing how there is active vomiting and discussion going on, the group has little chance to not be heard. Indeed, the groan (groans?) intensify and are soon met with very heavy footsteps that quicken in intensity as they near. From the shadows through the open door lumbers a patchwork monstrosity. It is comprised mostly of dwarven limbs from who knows how many unfortunate souls. Its impressive size is due mainly to the fact that each individual "limb" of the beast is made of at least two dwarven arms/legs. In fact, the thing's right arm is little more than one dwarven arm wielding another as a club; the two hands locked in place with metal rods, twine, and no doubt necromancy. Sitting atop it is a glassy-eyed gnomish head. It's small size would be comical were it not so unsettling.

Bruagh's detect evil shows plenty of residual evil in this room, but the beasts themselves give off none.

Evil or not, the thing's hostility is evident. Though its face remains expressionless, it wordlessly advances on Bruagh...

Shonti spins around at the mention of something following us through the tunnel, and would wait near the far side of the room for whatever pursuer we have to enter. When the monster walks into the room, Shonti quickly recognizes it for what it is, and tells the group what he knows about the beast. "It's a Flesh Golem! Made from our brethren's limbs an' bodies, an' it looks pretty mean! My magic won't do us much good here lads, they're resistent to it... This one's better left to our strongarmed brothers, oh, an don't try shockin' it wit' no lightnin', not a good idea."

As Shonti is telling the group what he knows about the monster at hand, he puts the rod in his hand back into his Handy Haversack, and pulls his crossbow off of his back. He tries to get it loaded and fire it off before the creature gets a chance at anything violent.

The masked dwarf recovers just in time to see the monstrosity lumber into the room. He draws an arrow back, ready to let it fly, before Shonti's warning. He whispers a word, and the lightning on his bow dissapears. He steps back a bit before his bow glows a bright light, fading to a dull glow as he takes aim.

Sarnak nods quickly upon seeing the monster appear, and looks to Kyachi and quickly casts Shield on her, as a shield-shaped wall of force appears at her front and moves with her to deflect any attacks aimed at her.

Kyachi looks up the monster as it appeared, and hearing the words of her group quickly springs into action, taking a 5' step to G10 to get a better angle as she delivers her fury upon the monstrosity.

Shinto hears the words of his brother and Sam. No magic or lighting anyways...To bad we've no room... He looks around for a way to attack, then he spots the table right in front of him; Gotta Idea.. hehe

Shinto hops onto the table, and advances to attack the Golem with his waraxe. He swings at the beasts head, or as close as he can get standing on the table. The Frozen Soul's icy glow still activated.

Ye shoulda neva been born! The dwarf screams with rage from within; but as he swings the sickened feeling is obviously effecting his battle skills.

The party wastes no time in deciding to end the monstrosity before them.

Shonti recognizes what he's dealing with and warns the others not to use magic, especially lightning. He then prepares his crossbow & takes aim.
You must use that 20 to hit roll if you attack this round.

Terser hears and stops the electricity cascading across his axe. He moves to the edge of his weapon's effective range, but finds two disfigured dwarves staring at him from the vats that flank him. It's just too much; his attack is dangerously wild.

Oathbreaker also calls of the lightning enchantment on his bow, but takes a moment to prepare to dish out some extra damage.

Devlin, from his hiding place in the shadows, lets loose a single bolt. As if the situation wasn't unpleasant enough, the golem now has a thick, viscous liquid steaming from it's shoulder. It does nothing to improve the smell in this place.

Sarnak aids his eidolon's defense as Kyachi attempts to tear through her opponent. She sinks a claw into the thing's thigh & pulls it closer for a bite. She likely wishes she hadn't after a mouthful of partially rotten flesh soaked in strong chemicals, but the attack is effective.

Dernock continues emptying his stomach. Surely his companions have this covered...

Sam confirms lightning is a no go & encourages his friends to get this over with; there are bigger fish to fry here.

Shinto grins before leaping onto the table. In a surprisingly nimble move, he sticks the landing, avoids the corpse, and swings at the golem. All for naught, unfortunately. The attack doesn't end up connecting.

Bruagh, his muscles glistening, his armor shining in the darkness, his beard impeccably brushed and maintained, swings at the golem. Truly, it is a beautiful attack. It's a shame his axe thunks harmlessly off the thing's hide.

The golem lets out a gurgled moan as our heroes rush to end him. With an angry growl, he reaches down and grips the underside of the table Shinto stands on & hurls the thing upwards. It flies backwards, taking the corpse with it, and smashes into the vat behind it (C8). The dwarf inside slides lifelessly out and comes to rest just in front of it. Those around it (Oathbreakers and Shonti) are showered with glass and a clear fluid with a powerful chemical odor.

Reflex DC15 to avoid the fluid. Failure indicates you're fairly soaked in the stuff. No immediate effects are evident, but it smells very flammable.

Shinto must make a reflex save DC20. Failure indicates he is thrown backwards and crashes into the vat as well. He will take 14 damage (calculated w/ the golem's STR bonus & generic falling rules) and be soaked in the stuff as well. Success indicates you may land on your feet within 5' of G8 (including G8 itself if you wish). I'm putting you in F8 on the map now, but you're wherever you end up.

A high pitched laughter comes from somewhere above the ceiling. Brann's voice echoes through the room, "Bravo, heroes! I knew today would be entertaining as soon as you showed up! Don't go anywhere; I'm going to get some snacks."

Through the doorway, another face can be seen. Whomever made this golem decided two would be better than one, it seems. The newcomer starts pushing the first golem, causing him to roar back in anger...

Shinto somehow loses his footing as the Golem flips the table. The dwarf flys into the vat, taking glass and nasty liquid covering his body.

Standing up after the nasty toss he took, Shinto fishes out a vial and gulps it down in one drink, Hoping this magic will help in taking out the two new additions to the team...

Shonti easily sidesteps the fluid raining his direction, and lets loose the bolt he loaded into his crossbow moments before seeing his brother fly by him. Noticing the second Flesh Golem step into the room, Shonti thinks "I'd better get away from these things before they decide I look like their new body parts!"

He retreats from the center of the fray, making his way back behind Sarnak and the vats he's standing in front of. "Shinto! Be careful brother, these are nothin' to be messin' around wit'!"

Dernock continues to feel exceptionally queasy but he thinks he's getting over it all but then the unfamiliar smell from the tanks just makes everything worse. Still he needs to be some where useful for later so he tries to drag himself to the other side of the room.

Always quick on his feet, Oathbreaker narrowly avoids the shower of glass and (sniff sniff) embalming fluid. Two arrows fly from his bow as he feels the familiar effects of haste flow through him. The added speed allows the dwarf to correct his aim just in time to connect with both attacks.

AC on these bad boys is 20, in case you fellahs haven't figured that out.

Terser realizes this may not be a quick fight & takes steps to give him and edge. His muscles swell as Domi's strength surges through him.

Sam continues to rally his companions & takes aim. It's a hit, but it doesn't seem to do much. The golem doesn't even notice.

Devlin decides to get up close and personal. He promptly vanishes without a trace & prepares his blades.

Shinto is thrown backwards through the vat & lands on the opposite side. He is pretty scratched up by the glass and covered in embalming fluid. He's pretty sure that fluid getting into his open wounds is bad, but at least it numbs the pain. He decides he needs a bit of help & downs a potion; his muscles growing much like Terser's.

Sarnak speeds things up a bit for some of his companions, including Shinto as the dwarf sails past him. Kyachi feels her muscles speed up & lashes out, missing at first but recovering quickly for three solid hits.

Shonti decides to get in on the action as well & lets fly with his crossbow. It's a grazing shot, but it manages to pop a seam in the rough twine holding this thing together. A wholy unpleasant fluid begins to leak out onto the floor.

Bruagh continues his assault, but swings just as the golem rears back from Kyachi's frenzy of attacks.

...and poor Dernock tries to regain his composure. Surely he'll be back in the fight any time now!

The original golem is looking rough. Several seams are open & whatever the necromancers stuffed inside it is starting to fall out. It absolutely does not care about this & presses the attack. It gets out of the way of the pushy golem behind it (5' step - no AoO) while raising it's club arm and swinging at Bruagh. The dwarf deflects with his axe, but leaves himself open as the golem spins & delivers a vicious backhand to Bruagh's face. Stars dance before the dwarf's eyes as he recovers quickly. It's best not to discuss the residue left behind from the attack.

Bruagh takes 16 points of bludgeoning damage.

The newcomer moves up & with lightning quickness reaches forward and grabs Kyachi by the throat, attempting to drag her close (she may make her AoO - the CMB roll to grapple was 26. The golem has DR/5. If the AoO is successful and does 6 damage or more AFTER DR is applied, Kyachi is not grappled & stays at G10. The golem has a CMD of 24).

The smell from the busted vat fills the room. Eyes begin to water & any attempts at deep breaths cause a burning sensation that radiates from the throat down into the lungs. A DC10 alchemy check reveals this to be a highly dangerous situation.

Highlight to display spoiler: {Anyone passing out from these fumes will die unless they are moved from the area. This stuff is also highly flammable.}

Everyone must make a DC10 fort save. This DC will increase each round. Failure imposes the fatigued modifier due to lack of oxygen. A second failure results in unconsciousness.

Terser is finally feeling ready for the fight that is progressing in front of him, and steps back into the fray with a battle roar. His muscles are straining against his armor and seem to be eager to deliver their power into the stitched together bodies in front of him. He delivers two ferocious blows to the Golem, hastening the process of it falling apart.

Sarnak coughs from the fumes. They were not bad enough for him to have trouble breathing yet, but it was close, as he calls out to the group. "Were quickly running out of air in here, I'd suggest we all try to hold our breath until we can get to clearer air." He then attempts to hold his breath for the moment

Kyachi retaliates as the golem attempts to grab her, quickly lashing out with her fangs to deal him a heavy strike and punish him for his attempt to grab her, dealing enough damage to dissuade him from continuing. She then turns to the first and resumes her all out attack, her bite and sting attacks landing, and only by the grace of her speed was she able to land the second bite. She attempts to hold her breath as well as per Sarnak's instruction, but may not be able to due to her bites opening her mouth.

Shinto is able to hold his ground against the dirty airs effects for the time being; then feeling the speed rush through his body he grins alittle as he makes a jump/dive manuever through the broken vat and over the thrown table. His gaze, and nasty grin, never move from the flesh golem that tossed him across the room.

Ye don't toss a dwarf. Period..

His short, but muscular, dwarven legs moving with other wordly speed as he rushes across the room;

Goin be no more limbs from these Dwarves here me thinks!!! He screams as he begins to sink his ax into the Golems thigh, as near its stomach as possible. The icy glow from the Frozen Soul flashes as the blade connects with the rotting flesh. Member me ye big ugly!!??? he screams as the icy magic seeps into the new hole.

Devlin takes a step from his hidden spot and lashes out at the monster before him. Perhaps its the fumes or just his apprehension to go toe to toe with such a creature or maybe its his new-found speed but all his attacks miss. Frustrated the rogue lets out a snarl not even able to touch the beast. Hearing the recommendation he take a gulp of what air is left and stifles his cough before he begins to hold his breath.

As soon as Shonti begins to smell the embalming fluid, he quickly makes a point to begin holding his breath. He slides past Dernock, and gets over to the corner of the room nearest the door to get a clear shot at the newest addition to the Frankenstein twins... Shonti reloads his crossbow, and fires off another bolt, this time at the newcomer. Unfortunately though, he must have loaded it incorrectly because no matter how sure he was of his aim, the bolt flies straight into the wall between him and the Flesh Golem... Blast these man-made weapons.. Why can't I just burn this vile creature? Shonti wonders after his malfunction with the crossbow.

Flesh Golem Arena - Round 4

Embalming fluid? What embalming fluid? Terser barely registers that something smells funny in his desire to end the golem's reanimated existence. Aided by the haste, he completely dismembers the first golem. Every stitch pops as the thing falls to pieces & litters the floor.

Sensing things need to end quickly so they can leave this room, Oathbreaker Absolutely nails the second golem with three solid attacks.

Sarnak and Kyachi attempt to hold their breaths, but find the fumes are still burning their eyes & mucous membranes.

Nice thought, but no dice. Roll this and last round's saves.

Kyachi and Shinto then move up and tear the second golem to pieces. The thing's head goes flying from Shinto's axe as Kyachi dismembers the twine holding it's abdomen together. It's nothing more than a pile of parts again. Devlin arrives late to the party and looks flashy, but that's about it...

The fumes continue to get worse. There are no attackers left, but our heroes still need to escape...

Same rules as last time, only DC15 on the fort save. No map, you know where you guys are. We're still in combat rounds until you're all out of danger.

Still spurred on by the haste and his unexpended rage, Terser is able to hold out against the fumes. He rushes around, gathering those of his friends that need help exiting the room. There's nothing more we need to see here lads, let's get out before we suffocate.

Shinto is able to hold out against the fluid fumes as he sets his shield onto his back and shoulders the frozen soul, Monsters are gone, gotta get outta here, but where do we go? he asks the team as he helps Terser carry or crutch out anyone who can't move on their own.

If everyone can move on their own, he double times it down the hall way, away from the fumes and the room of dismemberment.

As the last of the monstrosities fall Devlin hops back and grabs his crossbow. He heads for the door ad slips on some of the spilled fluid and lands on his back rather ungracefully. He hits the ground hard forcing the breath from his body, as he gasps for air his lungs fill with with the harmful fumes. He staggers to his feet and makes his way out of the room coughing and hacking the whole way.

The Oathbreaker goes to grab another arrow, but fumbles and nearly topples to the ground. Coughing horribly, he darts from the room, gulping down the fresh air as he bursts from the room. (Fort Save: 9, fatigued)
