DM Carl - All's quiet

Shonti investigates the devices and finds very strong evocation magic coming from them, but is unable to discern an actual spell. The devices seem to be custom constructs. He is unable to figure out how just to use it just by studying it; the device is not intuitive. The only way he can see to test it is with trial end error (ie. UMD checks).

Dernock and Sam both place the devices in their packs before continuing on with Taggart in the lead.

One of the prisoners taps Bruagh on the shoulder. "The jail's ahead, but we'll have to get past the barracks up there." He motions the direction they're headed with his axe.

Scouting ahead, Taggart spies four large, long buildings huddled close together. The door to the closest is wide open & even from a distance he can hear two duergar yelling inside.

"Get out of bed you maggots!" followed by a crash and heavy thump. Someone's obviously causing quite a stir in there.

"I can sneak by while invisible. Maybe I can find a way to free the dwarves without alerting the troops. Orrr...I bet one of these could do decent damage to their barracks."

Sam points to his pack (referring to the newly acquired bombs).

Regardless of the group's vote, Sam clutches his scarf and activates his shield spell. AC=22

Might not be a bad idea to try an get by 'em in stealth mode Sam... If those four buildings are their barracks and full of Duergar, it looks to me like we could use the help of some grateful, and newly freed Dwarven brothers..... But I can't really say I'm against tryin' out the new bombs either, hehe, blow the whole barracks to smitherines... Then deal with the wounded as they'd have US dealt with. OFF WITH THEIR HEADS!
Shonti takes up his place among the group, in the middle as he was before while pulling his light crossbow out from his Handy Haversack with his free hand. Loading it up to be prepared for battle, he then switches out his Rod of Empowering, for his Extending Rod.
Kinda strange feeling there'll be alot more of these bastards in them barracks... Might wanna try to knock out or enfeeble as many as I can before this gets outta hand!

Taggart emerges from the shadows, looking around. "We could use the bombs. It would have to be done quickly, and quietly. It would be best for two of us to go, each with two bombs. Save us some time, hit them quickly. The good Master Gnome has volounteered; I wish to offer my services as well. I can move quickly and quietly, and they won't be able to track me." Indeed, as you look down, you realize that Tag leaves no footprints in the ground. Looking down at your own feet, you all realize that only some of you (let's say half) leave any footprints.

Shinto speaks in a slightly raised whisper, for fear of being detected before the stealth team can make their strike. I t'ink tem bombs would be a good idea, but I don t'ink now is te time to try t'em out. We could be facing twenty or more duergar, ye figure up to five in each building right? Sure if the bombs work we will have an upper hand but what if ye can't perfect t'em on the first use? What if it causes a cave in lads? Then were stuck down here and we've alerted the army above... I really don't think its a great idea lads.

Shinto watches ahead of him and moves forward a bit trying to get a better look at the scene.

DM Carl - Combat round 1
Tuesday July 17th, 2012 8:14:05 PM

While the group discusses if blowing the barracks would be a good idea, Sam investigates the explosive devices. He makes little headway, but manages to avoid getting blown up in the process. He comes to the conclusion that they require some time to properly arm, and that whatever he did so far wasn't right.

Shinto, Shonti, Kyachi, Sarnak, Braugh, Sam and Taggart all move into position as the two dwarven prisoners run up from behind. "Are we gonna use those bombs or not?" one asks. The other clutches his axe and looks nervously towards the barracks where an untold number of duergar sleep.

Meanwhile, in the barracks, more commotion can be heard. A single sleepy looking duergar peeks his head out the door to see what all this fuss is about only to be greeted by a small number of dwarves, Kyachi, and two of Taggart's arrows to his face as Sam's bolt thunks into the door frame. The duergar lets out a scream and falls back inside the barracks, condition unknown.

The doors to the barracks open inward and are still wide open. Judging by the noise inside, the attack did not go unnoticed. Several heavy, rushed foot steps are quickly making their way to the door.

Kyachi looks to the lack of visible targets and growls at the annoyance, as she keeps a eye out and waits for a combatant to enter range from the other three barracks.

Sarnak, not seeing anything of note to do at the moment, shrugs and pulls out his rod of extend, casting extended shield onto Kyachi, as a circle of force appears near her body and hovers, quickly swapping positions to help defend against oncoming attacks as she stands poised to jump on a incoming target.

Taggart, satisfied with his opening volley, moves up and prepares for an encore while Dernock decides on a plan of action and joins the fray. Squinting into the dark, Taggart can make out something that seems duergar enough to need an arrow in it. Once again his aim is true; the thing's face distorted in pain is briefly visible as the lightning arcs into him. Sam sees the flash and aims for it. It's too dark and far to see the bolt connect, but the scream leads him to believe he did.

The brothers seem happy to be back in combat! Shonti gets ready to provide support while Shinto brazenly walks right in the doorway of the barracks, looking for a fight. As he steps into the doorway, he feels an intense pain in his calf as Taggart's initial victim (#5) connects with his axe.

Shinto takes 10 slashing damage.

Shinto doesn't take this lightly. The resulting attack puts the duergar out of his misery.

Devlin and Sam decide they need to have their companions' backs and prepare themselves appropriately while Kyachi grows impatient with the distinct lack of darkbloods to slaughter. Sarnak uses the calm before the upcoming storm to defend her eidolon.

The prisoners are still very unsure about this & approach Sam from behind. "Give us the bombs," they start. "We're in no condition to fight, but we can at least see if we can do some damage!"

Meanwhile, it seems the rest duergar have finally gotten their act together. Walking into the barracks, Shinto sees they may have underestimated their numbers. Two familiar looking duergar stand in the middle of the room (ooc: #1 & 2 from the last combat).

Duergar #8 is somewhat surprised to be face to face with a very violent looking Shinto. The darkblood pulls a small bit of spider web in the palm of his hand and blows it out the door & over the heads of our heroes, where it erupts into a mass of strong, sticky fibers. Combat casting - no AoO

Web: Anyone in the effect's area when the spell is cast must make a Reflex save. If this save succeeds, the creature is inside the web but is otherwise unaffected. If the save fails, the creature gains the grappled condition, but can break free by making a combat maneuver check or Escape Artist check as a standard action against the DC of this spell. The entire area of the web is considered difficult terrain. Anyone moving through the webs must make a combat maneuver check or Escape Artist check as part of their move action, with a DC equal to the spell's DC. Creatures that fail lose their movement and become grappled in the first square of webbing that they enter.

Almost in unison, several duergar raise their crossbows at Shinto and fire. Six bolts fly towards him; quick feet and good armor likely save his life, but two of the things thump into him.

Shinto takes 14 points of piercing damage.

One of the duergar in the rear (#12) calls out to his companions. "These fools walked into the wrong barracks! Show no fear!" The air shimmers as his magic settles around those inside.

Two more duergar near the rear lay hands on adjacent companions, but their words are drowned out. 10 & 11 lay hands on 2 & 3, respectively

Meanwhile, duergar #9 lets loose with a pair of magic missiles that strike Shinto as well.

Shinto takes an additional 8 magic damage.

Hearing the commotion and number of guards inside the barracks being assaulted Devlin makes a quick decision and moves away from the fight. My bows will be useless in that fight right now. Sam tells the former prisoners to stop cramping his style right before he sends an arrow directly into #7's chest, flashing with holy power.

Sarnak once again supports her eidolon as Kyachi leaps from the webs, but gets caught on the way and stuck.

Moving through a web requires an escape artist or CMB check. I didn't see one rolled, so I rolled at a +7 per Kyachi's sheet & got a 13. I also don't see a reflex save for Sarnak. If there's something I missed, by all means tell me and we'll fix it.

Taggart sends 3 arrows into the barracks assisted by Sarnak's magic. Two arrows find targets and drop both #7 and #8.

Dernock also sends an arrow into the barracks at #7. The missle flies over the now dead duergar and thunks into a very surprised #6 instead.

Devlin recognizes there's a whole lot of potential enemies they haven't seen yet and attempts to set the explosive. He makes good progress, but can tell there's not going to be an explosion just yet. Luckily he's still unnoticed.

I'm putting you by the explosive in case you want to keep working on it. If you'd rather take your next action from J9 and abandon the explosive, just say so.

Bruagh falls victim to the webs, but tears through them to join Shinto at the front lines; the brothers too stunned by the previous assault.

Seeing his old foe, #1 charges Bruagh but bounces off the mighty paladin. Still sore from the last round, #2 reloads and fires another bolt at Shinto that flies wide.

Duergar 3 takes a 5' step into the fray and swings at Bruagh as well, also failing to hit the paladin. Number four takes a step forward as well while reloading his crossbow. Number 6 also seems unable to land a blow on the seemingly impervious Bruagh!

Staying safely behind the melee at the door, number 9 sends another two bolts of magic at Shinto, putting the dwarf in serious pain.

Shinto takes 7 magic damage.

Duergar #11 snarls and casts a familar spell; another terrible cacophony rings out just outside the barracks.

Kyachi, Bruagh, and Shinto take 1 point of sonic damage and must make a DC 16 fort save or be stunned for 1 round.

Number 12 takes a look at the dead duergar, throws open the shutters on the western wall of the barrack, and leaps out!

DM Carl - Combat round 3
Friday July 20th, 2012 8:14:13 AM

I see it now. I'll go ahead and have Kyachi continue on in round 3, but in the future please don't make me guess what those rolls are supposed to be. Even something small like (CMB 15 to move in web) makes our jobs easier.

Suspended in the web, Kyachi reaches forward and grabs the door frame of the barracks. He uses the leverage to propel himself forward, snapping the webs and launching himself over Bruagh and directly into a very surprised looking duergar. The assault pushes the duergar back as several of Kyachi's attacks draw blood.

"If you need healing Shinto, get over here!"

Due to the malware issues, the whole site seems a bit off...we still haven't gotten on our game. As such, I am officially in "very nice DM" mode for this week and will let those actions count on round 3. I'll even direct you to take a look at the withdraw action before you post the current round. "Very Nice DM" mode expires over the weekend to be replaced with "tough, but fair" mode to reflect the gravity of the situation you're all in.

Battered, bruised, burnt and skewered, Shinto is in rough shape. He is also angry and knows his way around the battlefield. When #3 moves forward to engage him, he dismembers what was once a perfectly good duergar into three pieces.

No new map, just know that #3 is now deceased.

Shonti finds himself tangled in the web that came down upon him from above, but makes quick work of getting out of the "sticky situation". He takes a 5' step to the corner of the building, just outside of the web. He waves his arm rather strangely, the web still hanging from his arm and stuck to his rod a bit, while shouting:
Burn Darkbloods! Fuel my FIRE!
A Sphere of pure fire engulfs the Duergar towards the back of the building. (#10)

Devlin continues trying to activate the bomb, but evidently hit the wrong button. The controls of the device flare, burning Devlin with their intensity, before shutting off completely. At least no one seems to notice him still...

Devin takes 6 points of magic damage & is no longer able to work with the device (nat 1 on a UMD check).

Taggart lets loose with his arrows, but is unable to recapture that old magic from 10 seconds ago. All three arrows miss.

Sam calls out to Shinto that it may be a good time to come get healed. Shinto agrees and heads out of the barracks, tearing through the webs (rolled your cmb for you to do so - you passed), and gratefully accepting Sam's healing.

Shonti finds himself stuck, but is far too slippery to let that hold him back. Releasing himself, he takes a step out of the web.

You can't target #10 - he's inside the barracks and you can't see him. You also wouldn't have time to do all those actions in a single round.

Dernock decides it's time to get his hands dirty and moves up to join the party.

Sarnak, Kyachi and Bruagh all reel from the sonic blast.

Duergar #1 and 4 swing at Kyachi, only to fall back when they strike his shield spell. Bruagh is also unable to defend himself, but the darkblood just can't penetrate that armor.

Duergar #2 is in no hurry to join the melee and instead reloads his crossbow and sends it out the front door and manages to scrap off a chunk of Sarnak's shoulder.

Sarnak takes 1 point of piercing damage. The dice seem to like you folks today.

Number nine remains almost silent, but as he casts his spell, a darkness surrounds Kyachi's eyes. The eidolon's vision immediately begins to darken.

Fort save DC 16 or Kyachi is blinded.

Duergar #10 and 11 give each other a glance, and nod. 10 moves westward while 11 stays in place. Both cast identical spells. Bruagh and Sarnak immediately feel their muscles tighten.

Will save DC 16 for both Bruagh and Sarnak or be held

Meanwhile, all this action seems to have gotten so attention. The door to the barracks immediately behind most of the part shatters open, spraying those still in the courtyard with splinters.

"WHAT'S ALL THIS, THEN?" shouts one of the biggest duergar any of you are likely to have seen. Behind him, you see more duergar actively joining the fray as well.

Sarnak attempts to move forward and assist his Eidolon, but fails to make much progress as the next step he takes he finds no path forward and ends up stopping as he shrugs, looking south to the barracks but not able to see anything through the thick webs.

Shonti positions himself and waits for the duergar to move into his line of fire.

Shinto graciously accepts Sam's heal before tossing caltrops to slow the advancing darkbloods.

Haste allows you to double your move speed up to 30. Pulling the caltops out of your pack is a move action, however.

Sarnak shrugs off the hold spell, but gets caught up in the webs when she tries to move. Luckily, she's able to pull free before she finds herself caught up in them.

Kyachi meanwhile continues doing what he does best. Still sore at duergar#1 for warning the others and starting this mess, the eidolon grabs the duergar in his maw and pulls left while he claws right. The darkblood drops his axe and falls to the ground.

Sam, after healing Shinto, uses the chaos to blend in and vanish past along the barracks. Harsh words from his companions sting his ears. Will they live to understand what he's doing? Will he?

You can't make it to S3 unless there's something speeding you up that I'm not aware of. S7 is as far as you can make it.

Taggart finds the new duergar to be a tempting target and unleashes three arrows at him. Unfortunately, all three remain stuck in the webbing.

When shooting through a web, anything past 20' has total cover.

Dernock continues picking his way through the webs to assist his friends, voicing his disappointment at the group's gnome as he does so.

Devlin, seeing the device is of no use to him now, packs it up and leaps for the roof of the barracks. After a mightly impressive jump for a dwarf, he clutches the edge of the roof and swings his legs over.

I have no Z-axis indicator on the map, just know you're on the barracks, not in it.

Bruagh, unsure if they should retreat or press on, realizes he's not going to move fast enough through that web and decides to clear this barrack. Turning to #6, his hightened movement causes him to recover a missed attack enough to connect on the back swing, crushing the duergar's jaw.

As far as I know Zach is still out and arranged a sub, but no one's posting for Bruagh. I've asked our ADM to take over in the meantime, but figured I'd post for Bruagh since Zach did his part.

Seeing the heavily armored Bruagh and the dangerous Kyachi both in these cramped quarters gives the duergar pause. Numbers 2 and 9 make a b-line for the same shutter their companion used in the eastern wall and leap out. Their grunts indicating it was not a smooth landing.

Duergar #6 calls out in undercommon to #10, who moves in a curved path to flank Kyachi. Both duergar attack using axe and mace, both connecting an a surprisingly well coordinated attack!

Kyachi takes 18 slashing/blunt damage.

Number 4 comes late to the party, however. His ineffectual attack deflecting off Sarnak's shield.

"Malgor! Get up here and get these blasted webs out of my way!" shouts the newcomer.

"As you wish," comes the reply as a bored looking duergar saunters forward. He smirks at the scene before him, fans out his fingers and burns a good portion of the webbing away. Taggart's arrows fall to the ground.

"That's better! The whole lot of you have exactly 1 second to drop your weapons if you want to live to see tomorrow!" At the sound of his voice, the sound coming from the other two barracks increases and the front doors burst open.

Sarnak attempts to move forward to N8 yet again, but is caught by the webs once again, as he became caught up on the fibers, as he fails to pull himself out of them this time.

OOC: I just noticed something important. It's just a CMB check to move in the webs. Ooc: Reading from my phone, I thought Sam took off down hall way, please disregard Shinto's outburst due to my ignorance please :)

Shinto watches his gnome friend embark on his own mission, hopefully for the greater good, Devlin attempting a diversion of his own. His dear brother take off on a suicide mission of his own, Taggart and Dernock stuck within the evil magic web, and his last comrade and the team pet havn't stepped out the barrack yet. With his mind racing, he barely hears the words of the Duergar telling him to surrender. Even if he did, he'd probably tell them to do the same, because even a whole army of Duergar arn't a thorn bush in the path of the Zarbadium Brothers, much less empowerd with six more friends to help them along.

T'is is more den Nasty... The day to meet Gargul has come it seems. A real dwarf doesn't surrender. But, a real Dwarf knows how to pick his battles, to win the war.

Sam positions himself out of sight and gets to work planting the explosive. Lights on the panel start to make sense to the gnome as he fiddles with it, but it's not going to explode just yet. From this angle, however, Sam does notice the barracks are built on a platform. It's too low for even a gnome to fit under, but there's room enough to fling the explosive. A quick glance shows the rest of the barracks are like this as well.

I'm not sure where you wanted to end up. The only 5' step I see that would be around a corner puts you in the webbing.

Shonti, not one to be intimidated by the likes of this guy, steps forward and unleashes a color spray directly at the steps to the southeastern barracks. The large duergar averts his eyes, but Malgor can't be bothered to turn away. "Malgor, make him burn!" cries the large duergar. When he sees Malgor blinking furiously and swaying, he decides it's time to take matters into his own hands.

"They had their chance! NO PRISONERS! NO QUARTER GIVEN." He steps forward to end Shonti, only to find Shinto swinging an axe at his chest. Though he deflects the blow, he lashes out at Shinto instead. A vicious blow catches Shinto off guard, though he recovers in time to deflect what may have been his death blow.

Shinto takes 11 points of slashing damage.

Meanwhile, back in the barracks, Kyachi repositions himself to avoid being flanked further, then rakes #6 twice (-35 HP total on #6). The duergar stands, but there's a lot of blood pooling below him. Bruagh decides it's time to end him, however. Holy light flares from his axe on contact, throwing the darkblood's corpse against the wall.

Sarnak is likely pleased at her eidolon's performance, but that doesn't help her free herself from this webbing.

Dernock continues plugging through the webbing, nimbly avoiding it until he doesn't.

Devlin creeps along the roof of the building before dropping down just above the door. He drinks his mutagen and prepares to cause some havock down below.

Duergar #10 continues his assault. His mace connects with Bruagh's helmet with a solid thunk that rings the paladin's ears.

Bruagh takes 9 blunt damage.

Number 4, realising help is on the way, steps forward to engage Kyachi, but is no match for Sarnak's shield spell.

With the large duergar out of the way, the rest start to file out. Several shout for Malgor to "move his stinking carcass" out of the way, but for now, the caster blocks the egress. One does manage to make it through, however. He engages Shinto, but Shinto is one tough dwarf to kill. He just can't seem to connect.

Unfortunately for our heroes, more duergar start pouring from the eastern barracks, joined by those that hurled themselves from the window.

Shonti extends his left hand, fingers outstreched, and blasts another stream of flashy, multi-colored lights from each finger right in the face of the Big Duergar, hoping this time around it has some sort of effect on this overgrown Darkblood.
Immediately following his Color Spray, Shonti extends his right hand, this one holding his Rod of Empowering, and shouts EAT ROCKS! just as hundreds of small pebbles and gravel spray from the end of his rod, showering the Caster Malgor, the Big Duergar, and a few more behind him...

Still inside the barracks, Bruagh is feeling chesty and tries to secure the place quickly by killing it's former occupants. His axe flares as it connects twice with duergar #4 (8 is dead). The duergar remains upright, but barely. Kyachi tries to finish him off, but fear of death is making this darkblood too quick on his feet.

Still in the webbing, Sarnak continues to struggle against the strands but just can't seem to break free. Dernock has more luck, however, and manages to slip loose.

Out of sight, Sam continues to manipulate the device. He pushes a small black button on the side of the thing and the panel goes dark. Obviously, that wasn't the right button. Still, he remembers what he'd done before and is able to recover. It's still no closer to exploding, however.

Outside, our heroes decide to show this newcomer how they feel about loud-mouthed duergar.

Shonti decides to kick off the festivities with another color spray now that more darkblood are within range. Malgor and the large duergar are both unaffected, but the rest of the duergar behind him all have moments to clutch at their eyes before stareing hypnotized at the display.

14, 15, and 17 (below Devlin) are all stunned and blind.

However, Shonti's not done yet. Inviting the Duergar to dinner, he unleashes a torrent of stones at the same Duergar. Unable to avoid the stones, the three blind duergar take full damage. Malgor finally comes to, but not in time enough to avoid the blast either. Only the large one manages to throw his axe up to protect his face.

Seeing the opening, Shinto lays into the duergar, but can't draw any blood from him. That's some nice armor he's wearing.

Taggart, however, sees the kinks in it and sends three arrows into him, sending electricity cascading across his armor.

Devlin carefully lines up his shot, then drops a grenade straight into Malgor's robes. It falls through, hits the ground, and erupts among the group. Malgor's robes catch instantly, blackening his skin. The caster inhales to scream, only to scorch his lungs. He dies silently in agony. The rest of the duergar are either stunned or completely caught off guard. None manage to avoid the blast.

The large duergar looks behind him briefly at his stunned soldiers. Deciding Shinto obviously poses no threat to him, he moves to attack the caster causing havoc. His attacks are sloppy; he's been burnt, electrocuted, and bludgeoned. Still, they're enough to connect with the lightly armored Shonti.

Shonti takes 21 points of slashing damage...I think. Your AC listed is confusing. I'm not sure what that 18 at the end of 15/13/18 is for and your sheet shows your AC being 15. If the 18 is supposed to be your standard AC or if it's a temporary effect you have right now, both attacks miss. Let me know.

The duergar behind him are tired of the others blocking their way, and roughly toss the blind and stunned duergar aside.

Back in the barracks with Bruagh and Kyachi, the duergar realize they're not lasting long if they hold their ground, both withdraw and head towards the window. Number 4 leaps out, but #10 is only able to get about half way out the window this round.

The approaching duergar from the other barracks continue their approach, avoiding the webbing and instead moving to defend the SE barracks from Shinto and Shonti. From his position prone on the rooftop, Devlin hears several bolts clink off the roof. His position gives him total cover, but it's obvious they know where he is.

Drop it Devlin, NOW! Shonti shouts just as he gets a few feet between himself and the Big Duergar, but not stopping yet! Shonti quickly get's around the web, deciding it'd too much hassle to try to get through it. Thursday July 26th, 2012 8:40:16 AM

Sam continues to pluck away at the device as his friends are being overwhelmed mere feet away. Try as he may, though, the gnome just hasn't made it happen yet.

The brothers Shinto and Shonti, bravado aside, realize that living to fight another day is far better than standing ones ground when it's not necessary. Both withdraw from combat and head towards a more easily fortified position.

Bruagh is obviously in his element. With the duergar hanging out the window, the paladin is able to easy hack at his ankles before the darkblood lands outside.

Devlin, safe for the moment on the roof, continues to rain fire down below. He dosen't quite manage to get the bomb down the duergar's armor, but it does break open on his spaulders and burn off a good swath of hair before he pats it out.

Sarnak and Kyachi decide they need to deal with this web situation. Sarnak hands off a wand to her eidolon, who in turn accepts it and gets ready to pull her free.

Taggart continues unloading on the large duergar, only getting two attacks as he feels Sarnak's magic fade. His first arrow finds his mark, causing the duergar to fall to one knee, then completely prone on the ground. With his target helpless, Taggart is easily able to put an arrow under his helmet and end him. Seeing now is a good time to get moving, he sallies forth into the webbing, only to fall prey to it.

Dernock, meanwhile finally makes it inside to find the party's over. Still, at least he's inside...

Both prisoners see the mass of darkblood making it's way towards them and decide to get out of dodge. They vanish down the corridor.

The duergar move to surround the barracks. None seem too eager to stand toe to toe with this group; they're obviously hoping to overwhelm you rather than trickle forth to be cut down.

DM Carl - Combat round 9  d20+4=23 ; d20+7=8 ; d20+7=14 ; d20+7=10 ; d6=2 ;

Shonti, using the webbing for cover, watches with some satisfaction as a flaming sphere he conjours burns away a good swath of web. The duregar he's targeting sees the thing coming, however, and gets out of it's way.

With some of the webbing burnt away, a portion of the rest of it falls flat.

Web requires an anchor between two surfaces - I replaced the circle to make it clearer which squares were effected as well. It's hard to see, but N9 where Sarnak is is still webbed.

Shinto prepares to hack his way through this webbing, only to see the flaming sphere his brother cast clear a path for him. The injured dwarf is able to make it to the steps & prepares to push his way inside.

Moving through 5' of webbing is a full round action. Since you moved 10' already, you don't have time to move to P8.

Sarnak is finally able to free herself! Taking back the wand, she heals her eidolon before preparing to finally get inside these barracks.

See above. Moving through 5' of webbing is a full round action & you've already exhausted all you can do in a single round. On the plus side, you're not stuck anywhere.

While Taggart pulls ineffectually at the webbing, Dernock yanks his boot from the last of the webbing and is finally free of it.

Moving out of a web into a clear space doesn't require a check unless you're grappled. You're free of the webbing now.

Devlin rolls to the left, pokes his head up, and skewers one of the duergar. Unfortunately for him, he's already hidden and misses the look on the darkblood's face when the simple bolt coming towards him turns into something much, much worse.

Meanwhile, Sam's frustration level continues to rise as the blasted device he's working on refuses to explode.

The duergar continue to surround the party. , with the last few stragglers making their way from the western barracks. Three of them, finding themselves in front of the NE barrack w/o webbing in the way, open fire on Sarnak, Shinto, and Taggart. However, they're all terrible shots. Even the grappled Taggart avoids the poorly aimed bolts.

One duergar, hidden by the web from the rest of the party, decides to deal with Devlin. A cruel smirk crosses his face as he summons a swarm of spiders above the last place he saw Devlin. A teeming mass of spiders falls down on the dwarf, finding their way inside his armor and biting. Though the physical damage is slight, the dwarf will need to fight just to maintain his composure.

Devlin takes 2 points of damage and must make two saves. Fort vs DC11 or lose 1d2 strength from poison, and Will vs DC11 or be distracted (unable to do anything but make a move action the following round). The yellow square on the map is the area affected by the spiders.

MAP

A quick note about the web. Earlier in this combat I misread the rules and allowed some players to make a full move action through the web. This was wrong, as it's difficult terrain and requires a full round to move 5' through. Since the error was in your favor, I just let it go, but moving forward I will be sticking to the rules.

1 round by Monday morning or sooner. Have a great weekend, everyone.

OOC: I wasn't tangled in the web at the end of last round, I made a CMB check of 16; the DC is 15.... You said yourself that moving out of a webbed space doesn't require a check unless tangled; so the CMB of 25 should have been used to enter the next webbed space, untangled as well... No worries on that though; although the web should also be collapsed on itself by now I believe...

Shinto, standing next to Sarnak, looks at the fellow dwarf with a worried expression, Can I get a use or two outta t'e wand there friend? I'd love to help you all hold these Duergar off, but I'm not exactly in tip top shape; or even half way there at the moment.

Shinto stands his ground this round, switching his axe out for his light crossbow, and dropping his shield just behind him; hoping to be able to get off a few shots while getting healed as well, before entering the barracks with Braugh and Kyachi.

Shinto aims the crossbow at the Duergar right next to the flaming sphere.

Actions:
Drop shield and axe,
ready and load crossbow;

Firing one bolt at (D at N,13) next to flaming sphere;

Shonti see's the Duergar coming around the side of the web, and takes a quick step around the backside of the web,and focuses his Flaming Sphere to cut off the Duergar pursuing him while getting down the side of the NE barracks. He then makes it to the window and jumps right in, shouting Watch it lads, t'ere comin' in on all sides!
Got to burn 'em up, they're following my path back here, he thinks, pushing his Flaming Sphere back towards his enemies.

Reflex save DC 16 negates, or Duergar #21 takes 14 Fire damage.

===================================================================================
OOC: about the web, I also believe that it should definitely be down by this point. more then half of it has been burnt up, along with axe blades swinging through it, and arrows piercing it. I also think after looking at the spell description, it should have had to been cast 5' south of its original position to even have been cast in the first place, effectively anchoring it self to the walls of both the southeast, and northeast barracks. that is my interpretation of diametrically opposite, for this particular example.

Either way, It's a great challenge!

I gave Shonti a total of 14,440 experience points, this will have started him at Sam's total, of 12,440 exp. + the 2,000 we just earned, Correct?

Devlin winces in pain as the swarm drops on top of him. The spiders crawl across his prone form stinging and biting him. The dwarf is able to shake off the worst of the poison from the tiny creatures and is able to keep his head and focus on the battle. He eyes out the wizards position in the crowd and rolls away again hiding his position from those below. As he rolls numerous spiders are crushed but the swarm itself surges on.

Coming up he looks for the one who summoned the spiders and fires, his bolt once again enlarges in size and thunks home.

Kyachi takes a 5' step to L8, wanting to get out of the webs and out of sight so she can charge the first duergar who's stupid enough to enter the building.

Taggart, tired of this web, takes two handfuls of the stuff and pulls. With the tatters the thing is in already after being burned away, it finally collapses to the ground. It's sticky to walk on, but it won't be slowing anyone down. He makes it safely inside the barracks.

Shinto turns and makes a plea to Sarnak for some healing, only to find the summoner has already healed her eidolon. Hoping the heals come soon, the fighter discards his melee gear and snipes a duergar in the crowd.

The duergar you hit is now listed as #22.

Shinto moves further back along the barracks and sends his flaming sphere to cover him. The duergar obviously wasn't planning on the thing turning back towards him and is caught completely by surprise when it does. The dwarf hoofs it to the window and gracefully leaps inside.

Meanwhile, back in the barracks, Bruagh stands firm at the window; he makes certain any darkbloods coming back in do so through his heavily armored and highly dangerous self. Dernock takes a look for something with reach. Griping a bed from the bottom, he tosses the thing aside to reveal a simple but sturdy looking longspear.

Obviously you had to go moving about the barracks looking for the weapon. I've placed you where you found it.

Sarnak makes it safely inside the barracks and tops off her eidolon's health. Kyachi, meanwhile, stands ready to charge his next victim.

Do I have the pronouns right? I can't find a gender section in either of your sheets. Sarnak is a she, Kyachi a he, right?

Finding himself in an extraordinarily uncomfortable situation, Devlin nonetheless keeps his head about him. The dwarf rolls, killing many spiders but doing little to lessen their numbers. He quickly peeks his head up and tries to find the caster. He was unable to see who cast the spell, however. Finding a duergar in the crowd who looks like he might be a caster, the dwarf opens fire. Hopefully he got revenge instead of the attention of another wizard.

The duergar you hit is listed as #23 now.

...and Sam, poor Sam just can't catch a break. Deep inside, something starts to stir within him. He's not sure what it is, but it feels good.

I'm going to progress a story line here. Give yourself a +4 to your next UMD check on top of your standard +8.

The duergar move to further surround the barracks. Several shift position to the east, while a few take to one knee and produce crossbows. Unfortunately for him, the duergar only have Shinto as a target. Two bolts thunk home in the already badly injured dwarf.

Shinto takes 9 points of piercing damage.

The spider mass follows it's prey as well.

Devlin takes a single point of damage and must continue making a DC11 will save or be distracted each round he's attacked by the spider swarm.

I don't have the natural capability to heal others in the spells I can use, otherwise I'd have done so. Don't you think I'd have used it on others in the group if I could have? Don't you think I'd have used it on myself the numerous times I've taken hits if I could have? I worked alone often before I joined up here, and keeping Kyachi alive and fighting is usually the only thing that kept me alive, so that's why I have this wand in particular." He shrugs and then reactivates the wand once again on Kyachi, as she remains in the same position as he takes a 5' step to L8

Sam, an interlude
Monday July 30th, 2012 10:43:20 AM

Sam, alone and hidden behind the barracks, fiddles with the duergar explosive for quite some time. He hears the battle raging mere feet away, knowing his friends are in serious danger...and this stupid thing just won't explode.

His frustration grows. He feels it grow from an irritation to a barely controlled rage. He tries to manipulate the thing again, only to watch it grow dark. The gnome clenches his eyes in anger. When he opens them again, his world has changed.

The sounds of the battle rage on, but they fill him with an almost obscene peace. His heart swells knowing dwarf and duergar both suffer at the hands of each other. The walls around him pulse, absorbing the screams of pain all around him. A smirk crosses his face as he hears Shinto and Sarnak bicker.

Looking down, his hands are hard and chitinous. They are black, almost shiny, and end in gorgeous claws. They are his claws, made to tear through flesh and grab at the bone beneath. Right now, they hold a simple device. It is begging him to stop toying with it and let it cause the destruction it was born to create. As Sam's claws sink into the thing, he can almost feel the sigh of contentment coming from it. It glows red and shudders as Sam grips it, feeding the frustration he felt just moments ago into it.

He makes the blasted thing suffer for what it put him through.

Then, with a blink of an eye, Sam sees through his own eyes again. Clutched in his hands is the device, humming along quietly. Twenty lights appear on what was a dark area before. A second later, there are 19...

Shinto decides he's had enough fun for one day and gets himself out of harms way. When pressed about why Sarnak isn't healing him, it turns out the summoner has a perfectly good answer.

Shonti and Sam also seek shelter inside the barracks, Shonti barely escaping the oncoming duergar. Sam seems to be holding one of the explosives you found, only now it's humming and brightly lit. The gnome seems eager to get rid of it...maybe a little too eager. Shonti sees his over-eager brother in rough shape and implored him to stay safe. His flaming sphere loops around several darkbloods to roll into the one that was advancing on him. The duergar able to dodge out of the way, though.

Sarnak, after explaining why he's not healing Shinto, once again heals his eidolon.

Kyachi was already at L8. If you wanted to step to L7 to be next to Kyachi, Shinto beat ya to it.

Taggart shifts positions to get a clear shot at the duergar advancing on Shonti's previous location. It's a tough shot, but he manages to land a single arrow on the darkblood.

Dernock finds the reach weapon he was looking for, but temporarily discards it to offer Sam a help up into the barracks.

Bruagh takes up guard duty at the front entrance to the barracks. Bruagh's a tough one, but there are an awful lot of duergar advancing on them.

Devlin, alone and sepearated from the party, can't keep it together with all those spiders taking a piece of him. He rolls away, but the blasted things quickly follow.

Devlin takes 2 damage from the swarm. Same DC11 will save to act next round.

Seeing the party either pinned down inside the barracks or tormented by spiders, the duergar feel they have the situation under control. The eastern portion of the barracks may be blocked off by a flaming sphere, but it can't stay up forever. Two duergar are dispatched to climb the SE barracks and deal with Devlin before that swarm wears off. The rest advance. Their movements are deliberate, their faces cruel. Several flasks of oil and some others that look to be alchemist's fire are produced.

Looks like they intend to burn you inside or smoke you out...

Shonti puts away his Rod of Empowering back into his Handy Haversack, and walks towards the doorway right behind Sam. When he see's the mass of Duergar advancing on the barracks, he puts his hands up, in a motion to surrender.
Hopefully if they see enough of us putting our weapons down, they'll be fooled by our bluff.
Please, we beg of you! Spare our lives, we submit! Shonti calls out to the Darkbloods outside, praying they hear his pleas.
His flaming Sphere remains burning at the corner of the barracks, not letting anyone take their flank and come in through the east window.

Bruagh reaches back and puts a hand on Shinto's arm. "It's alright brother, Domi will see us through this." As he does the healing light of Domi washes over the battered dwarf.

The old dwarf looks out at the horde of Duergar surrounding him and smiles just a little. At least Tahni isn't here. I couldn't bare to lose her too.

The Paladin takes another step forward and to his left. "A little fire and oil, eh boys? Guess you boys got tired of being butchered? How about this... pick five of your boys to go against me and me alone. Kill me, and my friends will put down their weapons. I win, and the rest of you put down your weapons. I mean come on, surely five big strong Duergar can take on one little old battered dwarf? Or are you elf lovers?"

It's a tense moment in the barracks. Sam currently holds a device that will likely end this battle in a few seconds, but a lot can happen in a few seconds. The gnome calls out surrender to the duergar, hoping to buy some time. Shonti comes up from behind and adds to Sam's plea. Outside the duergar continues to avoid his flaming sphere and finally decides he's rather not try and get past it anymore.

Shinto gets out of Sarnak's way and gratefully accepts the heals from Taggart and Bruagh. No longer on death's door, his usual bravado returns. Along with Bruagh, the two stand guard while Bruagh calls out a challenge to the duergar: a 5-1 battle to determine who walks away from this.

Dernock and Kyachi each guard one of the windows leading into the barracks. Though there are duergar just outside the western window, none try to climb in.

Devlin meanwhile continues his slow but sure roll across the roof hoping to get away from the spider swarm. Still, the swarm is relentless and follows along with him.

You know the drill...

Outside, the duergar roar with laughter. "Gets a load of these guys," one cries out. "They kill our brothers then beg for mercy. I haven't got to watch a bunch-a you burn alive in some time. We're gonna enjoy this..."

With that, several flasks of oil are tossed towards the barracks. One hits Shinto, though he is able to block the flask with his shield. Three flasks of oil sail over our heroes heads and shatter inside, splashing oil everywhere.

Two duergar holding flasks of alchemists fire saunter forward. "Go ahead and beg for your lives one more time. We could use the laugh!" They casually toss the flasks up and down in their hands, clearly enjoying drawing out what could likely be a gruesome end to our heroes...

Short post today - I have to leave work early to argue with the Social Security folks. Sam, you have 1 move and 1 standard action before that bomb explodes.

Sam steps to the doorway (assuming the others move out of his way). He sees the faces of his enemies. They look exactly as he had imagined when he produces the bomb from under his arm. Horrified faces meet his determined stare. He hoists the bomb up in his right hand and prepares for the most important moment in the battle. His muscles tense as his arm begins the forward movement. He suddenly feels resistance! The bomb is caught on his scarf... (to hit =6...natural 1...)

Time stops. Sam now realizes his purpose...to die so that his Dwarven brothers might live. Sam runs forward into the mob and lets out a battle cry that seems louder than any other noise in the cave. A sound only outmatched by that of the bomb detonating...

Finally able to wipe enough of the spiders out of his mouth and eyes to be able to see, what comes into view horrifies the covered rogue. Sam rushes out of the barracks with the flashing bomb held high, time seems to slow to a crawl. The rogue shouts out for the small gnome, but seeing the look of determination on his face Devlin nods and picks himself up. The spiders fall from his form and he shakes his hair to clear a few from his face. He waves to his friend before turning and rushing to the back of the building. Waard see him through to his final rest with all the luck you can allow. He thinks as he slides into the back corner covering his head with his arms and finding the shadows again.

I cant let that boy die, girly scarf or not, hes trying to save our lives by killing himself, damn that boy!! Nows not the time to be a hero Sam! We need ye boy!

Taggerts arrows seem to fly past his ears and when they connect with the bomb, Shinto takes off, fitting his shield to his back, diving at his gnome brother. Grabbing Sams shoulders Shinto takes him to the ground, laying ontop of Sam with his own shield hopefully protecting them both from the worst of the blast. if we make it, im goin te kill ye myself lad Shinto says into Sams ear as the bomb explodeds.

As the two duergar prepare to either smoke out or burn up our heroes, Sam moves forward and produces the explosive he worked so hard to activate. The mirth on the darkbloods' faces drains as they recognize what this gnome holds. Sam gets ready to throw, knowing if he holds on to it any longer it won't be the duergar that get exploded.

His arm begins its forward momentum only to stop short; Sam's prized scarf seems to have gotten wrapped around his wrist somehow. The gnome has no time to free himself before the thing explodes. Arm held as high as it can go, the gnome charges forth; his battle cry echoing throughout the cavern.

Several duergar on the outskirts make a break for it, but those closest to Sam aren't about to let him get away with this. As the gnome runs by, two duergar swing at him, trying to cut him down close enough to the barracks to take it and his friends out. While the first can't connect, the second buries an axe in Sam's chest. The pain is intense and the impact drives the air from the gnome's lungs.

Natural 20 to hit, confirmed with a natural 19 - Sam takes 18 points of slashing damage. If you don't survive this, you may want to find Wardd and ask what gives.

Taggart siezes the opportunity when Sam is slowed by the blow. Taking careful aim with blunted arrows, he manages to hit the small device Sam is holding over his head. The arrow lacks enough force to send the thing flying, but the shock does cause the gnome to lose his grip on it. A second arrow from Taggart flies off wide, but he clips it with a third. Bruagh then steps forward and pushes Taggart down, planning on absorbing the blow from this blast himself.

Not far behind those arrows is the fearless Shinto. His shield on his back, he tackles the wounded gnome and holds him down, hoping to protect him from the blast. He sees the blow Sam takes to the chest and realizes it's bad. Sam's tough, but that blow would have killed a normal dwarf (to say nothing of a normal gnome).

Back inside the barracks, Shonti and Dernock find what cover they can and hope to survive what's about to happen. Sarnak and Kyachi are already holed up in the corner.

Devlin sees the drama unfolding and, spiders be damned, wishes his friends the best before getting out of dodge. He brushes the things off and makes a break for the rear of the building.

The bomb tumbles not far from where it was shot out of Sam's hands. The duergar closest turn to run, but it's too late for them. The bomb emits a surprisingly pleasant chime before the arcane energy inside rips it apart. The explosion is one of pure force that sends a rolling shockwave out from it's epicenter. There is no fire, no smoke, and no heat. Those duergar who weren't able to brace for the impact are thrown through the air like ragdolls. The oxygen is forced from the area as the force shatters the vials of alchemists fire the duergar were holding. With no oxygen to burn, the liquid is atomized and sprayed to the east. A shimmer can be seen in the air as the oxygen returns and the individual droplets ignite. Luckily for our heroes, none of it manages to ignite the oil.

Those duergar far enough away to avoid being thrown by the blast are still knocked to their feet as the ground heaves up from under them.

Devlin's moving quickly and manages to get to the edge of the building before the explosion hits, but between his forward momentum and the force behind him, he's going over the edge.

DC20 acrobatics check to instinctually roll when you hit the ground, otherwise take 1 point of falling damage.

Inside the bunker, everyone except Bruagh is well shielded from the blast. The sturdy paladin is hit square by the shockwave, though his actions saved Taggart from the same fate.

Bruagh takes 15 points of damage from the force of the explosion, mitigated somewhat by his shield and being prepared for the blast. Those prone are thrown into the air and land roughly. Dernock is squished as the sturdy bed comes down on top of him. No damage, but it's not a pretty scene with all the blood and dead duergar in there with you guys.

Near ground zero, Sam and Shinto get the worst of it. Already gasping for air after taking an axe to the chest, Sam also has to deal with being in a temporary vacuum and having a heavy dwarf completely covering him. When the blast hits the gnome's body gives out & his vision goes black.

Sam takes 20 damage from the blast. This should put you at -6 hp and unstable.

Shinto, on some level, is aware that he's still alive. All he can hear is a high-pitched ring and his body refuses to cooperate, however. Underneath him, the gnome lies motionless. He can't tell if he's breathing and he can't manage to move himself off Sam either.

Shinto takes 21 damage in what may be the luckiest roll of the scene. He is deafened and stunned for the next 4 rounds.

Though mostly free from the blast, the noise and pressure are still hard to throw off for those inside the barracks. Our heroes struggle to maintain their awareness.

DC 15 fort save or be stunned and deafened for 1d2 rounds...except for Bruagh. Bruagh has a DC20 fort save or he's stunned and deafened for 1d4 rounds. Devlin has enough distance and cover to avoid the saves, but lands prone if he fails his acrobatics check. The spider swarm is out of sight and you're not sure what happened to them. There are still a few on you, but not enough to cause any harm.

***

No map today. We're still in combat rounds since Sam is bleeding out and there's no guarantee anyone will get to him in time to save him. Two move actions for anyone inside the barracks to reach Sam (not including standing from prone), 4 move actions for Devlin.

1 hero point to Sam, Braugh, and Shinto for putting themselves in great peril to save their companions.

Note on Taggart's actions: Rob and I discussed how this would work. Rob brought up the fact that what he did could be ruled a disarm, which is a melee only action. I decided to allow it, but want to note that against an enemy that would be considered a disarm attempt and be subject to those rules. If there's a feat or ability that allows ranged attacks to disarm, by all means bring it to my attention.

An eerie quiet falls over the area as the explosion's echos fall away. Peering out from behind his shield, Bruagh is the first to see the mess that gnome made. The duergar nearest the explosion have been torn apart. With no heat to cauterize the blood, the area outside the barracks looks like a slaughter house. Bits of duergar and an obscene amount of darkblood are splattered across the area. The stench the foul creatures leave behind when their guts are torn apart is impressive.

Across the way, he sees Devlin poke his head around the corner. Devlin is the first to see Shinto and Sam collapsed in a heap and covered in gore. Though neither are moving, Devlin's keen eyes spy Shinto's chest rise and fall; the dwarf lives! Bruagh spies the two as well and sends out a burst of healing energy. A nearby duergar, also benefiting from the heal, sits up and rubs his eyes, only to fall back when Taggart strolls out and casually puts an arrow through his throat.

Sarnak, seeing his eidolon is stunned but ok, runs from the barracks to check on his companions. Moving quickly he manages to dislodge Shinto from his protective position over Sam. "You're absolutely insane you know that? That insanity saved our lives, but for all our sakes, please don't do that again," he calls out, but there's no response. As Bruagh's healing hits the gnome, the flow of blood from him stops and his breathing becomes much less labored. He is still out cold, and his face shows his body still wracked with pain, but he is alive.

Dernock, braced for the blast as he was, manages to survive without ill effect. He takes a moment to pull out a healing potion he's sure will be needed before getting to his feet. From his position in the barracks, he's unable to see if Sam or Shinto are alive. All he sees is gore outside.

Shonti leaps up from his hiding spot; concern for his brother inspiring him to get moving. "Shntah! Braaaaaaaaaagu..." is all he manages to get out before gravity pulls the unstable dwarf back to the ground with a loud clatter of armor as he lands on a still very dead duergar. "Saammm," he calls out before he realizes he can't hear a word he's saying.

Outside, Shinto is aware that someone is moving him. When Bruagh's heal hits him, it takes the edge off the pain but he still can't manage to move himself. As he's turned over off of Sam, he sees Sarnak come into view and say something to the gnome. What is anyone's guess. Shinto takes the moment of helplessness to ponder the fact that he's still alive and what that may mean for his future. Was the divine at work today? Does he have a god to thank for him surviving? Perhaps a change is needed in his life...

...and Sam. Sam holds on to life, but feels it slipping away. He's not sure where his awareness is at the moment, but he knows he's not alone. Something is here with him, and Sam knows it's here to collect. As Bruagh's heal stabalizes the gnome, the presence seems to let out a sigh. A voice speaks inside his head in a language he knows but hears only in his dreams: abyssal. "Go back then, Sam. I have all the time in existance to wait." With that, our gnome loses all awareness.

Sam is also stunned and deafened for as long as Shinto is. Didn't seem prudent to mention it when your survival wasn't guaranteed anyway.

Slowly, the silence is broken as a few duergar hanging to life begin to groan. They are quickly drowned out by a cacophany that starts off weak but grows quickly. The sound comes from all around - angry, broken and violent. Our heroes who are able to hear listen, unsure of what may be bearing down on them. They're in no position to take on a darkblood assault. That's when they realize what they're hearing: the sound of dwarven battle cries. In the distance, hunderds of dwarves and a few gnomes are seen pouring in through tunnels leading to this cavern.

General Blackaxe's assault on DrakesMeade has begun!

***

As the party is out of immediate danger, combat rounds are over. Sam and Shinto still have a good 30 seconds before they can hear and move again, assuming Sam makes it back to positive HP. Shonti and Sarnak should only have 10 seconds or so at most. Bruagh, Sam, and Shinto are all in dire need of a bath.

Rob will be taking the helm again starting Monday. Thanks to everyone for an awesome couple of scenes. I'll be finishing up your next module in the meantime...

Time passes and Sam slowly comes around. He sees the group gathering amongst the carnage. As Sam looks over the massive destruction, a question comes to mind that only blackout drunks and Steve Urkel have...

"I thought I was dead for sure. You guys saved my life. Especially you Shinto."

Sam's smile fades and is replaced by one of concern. Something weighs heavy on the gnome's mind. He shakes it off. "No time to worry about my visions now."

"We need to get moving. The seige has started. We have the distraction we were hoping for and an opportunity to form a fighting force to invade from within."

Devlin breathes a short sigh a relief seeing everyone up and moving. He quietly makes his way towards Malgor and the large duergar careful that any of the enemy may still be alive. He meticulously searches the bodies paying attention to items that avoided damage in the blast and the large duergar's armor. He points out anything of note.

When he is finished with his grisly task Devlin walks over to the group with a big smile on his face. Ye all are crazy and I would not have it any other way. He says laughing, giving Braugh and Sam a hearty pat on the back. Let move on ta the prison sounds like the fightin has begin and we need ta go help. Devlin pulls out one of his elixirs and drinks it some of his minor bruises and scratches healing up. Looking at his bitten and bruised body the rogue looks at the beleaguered group. Lets heal up and move on.

When the group his ready he nods to Taggert and moves on, silently melting into the shadows.

Actions:
Search bodies = 20
Drink CLW elixer = 3 hp healed

Sarnak nods. "Indeed, with Sam's mad bomb we managed to take out this room effectively, now to take on the rest. I doubt we can afford a break, but I'm nearly out of spells again. Feels like I kind of wasted them a bit given the bomb was going to take them all out anyway."

A rare smile graces Tag's face as Sam and Shinto stir. He turns to any Duergar attempting to stand and rectifies that with his bow, a grim look once again on his face. "Whatever we do... let's move from this place. Quickly, preferably."

What's left of the barracks - DM RobC
Monday August 6th, 2012 12:37:58 AM

The duergar seem to have more to worry about than a small band of dwarves (and gnome) as BlackAxe has given the order to begin the assault. There is no time to rest now. The fate of DrakesMeade will be decided today. Gnomes and dwarves standing side-by-side to reclaim what was once theirs. 500 years of duergar occupation could be ended here and now.

The flimsy bond that existed between party members looks to have been forged anew. Arguments have been forgotten and grudges buried. The party are now starting to act and work as a unit.

Bruagh lays a tender hand on Sam channeling the power of Domi to heal his friend.

Taggart too, goes around treating the wounded with his cleric-on-a-stick. Preparing his bow, he looks for any duergar in the immediate surroundings, however none stir. Well, voluntairly at least - a few bodies spasm and twitch.

Sam tries to focus on the present, but a nagging feeling - like a splinter in his brain - unsettles him. Something is trying to reach him? Or is it trying to reach out from him? He shakes it off for the moment.

Sarnak grimaces with the knowledge of how many spells he has remaining today, realising that the fight is not over. As long as Kyachi is by his side though, he is confident they will survive this day.

Devlin searches the bodies, stripping them of anything of value. Some good quality warhammers, axes and breastplates. Perhaps interestingly, no coins of any kind. (Masterwork items. Nothing magical or of special material). He prepares to lead the party from the barracks.

The sounds of battle ring out through the keep. Screaming, small explosions, and the sound of metal striking metal.

A tremor builds and seems to emanate from deep underground and then subsides.

Nodding to Bruagh the rogue says.Aye lad the time ta be quiet is long gone. Let these hall ring with the shouts of the freed and the songs of the righteous. Time ta show these darkbloods who the true owners of Drakesmeade are. Looking around at the carnage he shrugs. Again that is.

In response to Dernock's question he motions to the field of bodies. I'm sure there was a shirt of chain and some leathers in the pile. I could help ye look if ye want. Need ta get something made of mithral, feels like I'm wearin next ta nothing. Mind if I take a use of that wand while we are at it?

Kyachi shakes her head for a moment to clear the daze as she gets up and walked out of the barracks. "That was a nice explosion, my ears are still ringing. Everyone still alive? Good." She then looks to Sarnak, getting the various updates on the situation, as she then looks back at the group. "Well, the healing wand still has plenty of charges, so even if I can't get direct support, I'm still up and ready to keep going. Sarnak just needs to stay in the rear, still got your crossbow?"

Sarnak pulls it out and shrugs. "And do what exactly? Pelt our targets with fly bites and hope they fall? You do more in one attack than i'd do with 3 shots from this thing, I'll just stick next to you and use this wand, just hope that the charges last till we can replace it again." [b]

Kyachi nods.
"Well, were ready to advance, let's go kill some duergar."[b]

An old foe returns - DM RobC

A masterwork breastplate is found for Taggart, and the duergar insignia upon it quickly covered over.

Bruagh takes the lead escorting the party from the battered barracks in search of the main prison. The assault seems to have drawn the duergar away from the corridors, as several minutes pass without sight of the enemy as the party cautiously move about.

Finally, Bruagh reachs a set of open double doors and pokes his head around the corner, peering inside.

The room is lined with prison cells - cages for the dwarves within them. The doors to two cells are open though they contain only the corpses of dwarves lying in pools of blood. Dwarven men, women and children huddle in the remaining eight cells.

On the other side of the room stand a number of duergar and what appears to be a large, red snake the size of a dwarf. The duergar stand in formation, weapons in their hands apparently ready and waiting.

The largest duergar holds a dwarven woman in front of him as a shield.

"Ahh, Stormbringer. There you are. It's been a while" Humphrey holds a two-handed sword in his right hand, the bloody blade pressed firmly against the neck of the dwarven woman he holds in front of him. Her eyes are closed, her body trembling as she sobs quietly. "Did you feel my knife by your back in Riddleport, Stormbringer? I was all set to spill your blood on the earth, but Doven wouldn't have it. The Fhorge is kind in delivering you to me like this" He watches Bruagh intently and then pulls the blade a quarter of an inch, drawing blood and a loud cry from the woman "Shhhh... Hush now. The brave paladin is here to save you" Humphrey says calmly, looking Bruagh square in the eye "Why don't you and your little group come out where I can see you, fuzzy chin?"

I'll try and prepare a map when I get home to give you a proper layout of the room. I'm assuming everyone is outside the room at the moment, and only Bruagh has been seen. Everyone has heard Humphrey speak.

"Ah, Humphrey at least you are back with your own kind," he says pointing to the snake. Watching Humphrey slowly cut the woman Bruagh struggles to keep his rage in check. The Paladin sighs, knowing the words he must say to the woman now. They are most likely true but also the only way he can think to save possibly save her.

Dear one, I am afraid I can not save you. You are in the hands of one who has no honor, no mercy, and no sense of decency. Anything I say to have him spare your life will only incite him and bring him joy before he murders you. I am sorry. May Gargul's embrace be warm and loving." Bruagh hopes his reverse psychology will cause Humphrey to try and prove the Paladin wrong, but he knows that most likely he has spoke the truth.

He points his axe towards Humphrey and lets whispers a word to Domi asking for help in smiting his foe.

This map was fun - I like the "blood" effect.

Only Bruagh is revealed at this stage. Everyone else is shown outside the room in no particular order. Assume you can start from any position you like outside the room to the left.

I also noticed a number of you had crossbows loaded and ready. Given the situation I took a hunch that you would prefer to have remained behind the wall rather than moving to take a shot.
