Bring out the Imp - (DM RobC)  d20+8=11 d20+8=23 d20+8=25
Wednesday June 20th, 2012 11:18:51 PM

OOC: Yay for Pulp Fiction references :)

Dernock, Shinto and Sam do not sense any deception to the Imp's words. Either Sam is a double-agent, or perhaps he spilled the secret plans unintentionally?

Taggart keeps his bow aimed squarely at the little devil. He refuses to believe a single word that comes out of the imps mouth, believing it all to be a lie.

The imp continues to smile, still hanging upside down and rocking back and forth on the ceiling.

It continues looking at Sam "It uses the old tongue. Yes. No fear at all. Must have very trusting friends not to worry about a gnome that speaks the devils-tongue." it chuckles to itself "Wins or loses? How interesting. It thinks there will be a side that wins?"

When the imp has finished playing with Sam it turns to speak with Taggart "Conspiring? My, what an accusation it makes. Wait..." the imp pauses and stops rocking "does it ... does it think the dark dwarves rule Drakesmeade?" With that it erupts into laughter

Wiping a tear from his eye, the imp then addresses Sarnak in a serious tone "It is right. Death IS always near. Why, does it know that the dark dwarves are aware of that little army gathering outside? Invisible ambushes can be so... messy. Why does it think these hallways are empty? The dark dwarves are waiting to spring the trap on the surface"

OOC= I'm all for the three wide marching order with scout's ahead & behind
==========
Being right in front of/next to the demon when it appeared, Shonti jumps slightly as he turns to the demon with a mean look about his face. From what realm do ye be hailin' there Imp?
1}Planar Knowledge check.
As Shonti reaches into his Handy Haversack, pulling out his Empowering Metamagic Rod, He thinks to himself.
I would see no reason why the Imp would not attack directly... If that what he were here to do.... Were he not simply warning us of an ambush situation? We should probably get inside a big enough room for a big battle, or plan as to how we're going to definitely defend this hallway!
What be yer' Intentions here Imp? Somethin bad 'bouts to happen round 'ere? Get on with it; Spit it out!
2}Sense Motive Check.
Looking back to his companions, and more directly to Shinto, Shonti proposes his thoughts.
I don't like the sound of what message 'is here devil is trying to get to us. Whatsay we get outta this blasted hallway can we? Now to the other Prisoner dwarves, What's 'round us here? Any rooms a bit bigger than the cell we just come from?
NOT calling upon the Rod in his right hand's powers, yet, anyways lol.. Shonti waves his left hand with two fingers out down by his waist in a cross-like pattern then mutters in Gnomish: (Detect Magic Spell here.)
Give me sight to the arcane,
For I call upon the same.
Show to me the Divine,
for the peace of my own mind...

He looks the Imp directly in the eyes while casting the spell, and glares at him for 3 rounds solid, just after casting his spell. Shonti takes a good and hard scan over the area surrounding the group (60ft in both directions) looking for any doors, trap/ secret or not. Being used to scouting the surroundings for Shinto, this is more out of instinct than worries...
3}Perception Check.
4}Spell Failure Check on Detect Magic 5%
5}Spellcraft Check on any spell, or spell-like abilities coming from anywhere, taking a strong interest in the Imp.
6}Acrana Knowledge Check for any magical aura's coming from the Imp.
[i] OOC: My rolls are all numbered, In order of my post, and across the die rolls bar of course. Pretty strange that with only five D20 rolls that I happened to come across a Nat. 1{3}, and a Nat. 20{5}!!

Ooc, sorry all had a crazy night at work.

Devlin glares at the imp but stays in the shadows despite the creature looking at him. He listens to what it has to say and is a bit alarmed at the mention of the ambush. As the creature keeps talking the rogue begins to sense it is only trying to stall the group. Devlin readies his gear and begins to move towards the other end of the hall. Its keeping us busy fer a reason or it would have already played its hand. Lets move on there be nothing this wee thing can offer us.

Devlin readies himself for imp to possibly attack.

Ooc: The ambush in question would be for the dwarf and gnome army camped outside the front door of this place.

"I'm with Devlin. This lackey has nothing to offer us and is wasting our time. Let's move."

Sam is ready to continue onward. His bow is at the ready.

Being... Observed; The Dwarven army knows t'ey've been spotted... But it'll take em 4-5 hours to be battle ready... Not lookin good fer t'e home team...

To his brothers concerns, (In dwarven) Me don' t'ink an ambush is fer us lil brotha... Me thinkin the army is about to be ambushed out side... But the dwarf in the mirror said they wouldn' be ready for hours... He turns back to the Imp pointing the nub of his axe at the creature he shakes the weapon furiously,

(In common) If the dark dwarves don' rule t'is evil keep then its more evil than we had thought to begin with. State ya true reasons fer stoppin us! Or else Begone, foul creature before I turn ye head into busted ice shards. Your distractions have worked long enough an we've more important business t'an listenin to ye riddles...

Shinto takes a quick look around their surroundings. Hoping to catch anything out of the ordinary... (perception 15; no bonuses added for stone work... Wasn't entirely sure they applied here or not...)

When the rest of the group begins to leave, and he's put a few feet distance between them and the Imp he voices his concerns.
(In dwarven) The Imp is nuttin more den a distratction; don' t'ink he workin wit Duergar but dont t'ink he wants em to lose ether... we need to get topside and warn the army. I can't cower underground while me kin is being ambushed... Better yet.. Sam, can ye send a message back, in code, te warn em bout them invisdiable ambush?

I dunno wat t'e Imp is up too, but it for sure not helpin us... But probably not helpin dem Duergar ether... The army knows t'ey've been spotted... aaaggghhhhh gggrrrrr.... To much t'inkin... Gettin me all confuzzeled...

Taggart shakes his head, turning on his heel from the Imp. "It's lying, and wasting our time. Let's be off," he calls out, glancing over his shoulder at Braugh. "I understand you'll probably want to leave that thing as well," he says in Dwarven. "But I'd much rather have a squad of Duergar on my tail over a Devil." With that, Taggart jogs into the shadow, once again resuming his stealth.

"Actually Tag, I must disagree with you. The Duergar may have been evil, but was not a creature born of Pure Evil. Demons and Devils and other fiends such as this wretched little creature here are beyond redemption. They live only corrupt souls and send them to the fiery pits of hell in an effort to advance their own pathetic existence. For that reason alone I'll be sending this little wretch on a one way ticket back to his masters!"

With a face of resolved commitment, Bruagh charges the imp and slashes at it mightily with his axe, hoping to end it before it has time to go invisible.

Damage: 11 Slashing, +9 Holy, overcome DR Good.
Heroic Trait: Hero Point Reroll 1! Hero Point not spent!

OOC: I know this might cause some problems in the group and I apologize in advance. Bruagh feels creatures such as kobolds, goblins, humans and duergar have the chance at redemption and thus in most cases can be spared. Demons, Devils, Fiends, and Abberations are a different story. They are typical creatures of Pure Evil and not just evil. This means that Bruagh has a duty to all the innocents of the Wold to slay all such creatures without prejudice.

Kyachi grins widely. "I wouldn't be opposed to a bit of demon blood, haven't tasted demon before and I won't turn down a opportunity to try. Do you want to give me that opportunity my potentially tasty little friend?"

OOC: I have made my move already to Detect Magic/ Spellcraft check/ Arcane Knowledge check.. sorry I didn't post yesterday, I got on here about 10:30, & didn't see a DM post yet, is why I missed posting. Seeing Braugh and Dernock attacking the Imp might have effect on my focus on him, but Shonti will not give up on the spell chosen. I've no reason for Shonti to directly attack the Imp. Being Chaotic/Good, I'm sure Shonti could, because he poses a threat to the party. BUT.... Being right next to the demon, I'd rather not Shonti get engaged in any physical combat, and let the bruisers handle him, while I study the Imp.

ooc-It is funny that you posted the above message, because it is the second time that this has happened this week Derek. Matt had the same issue. You posted at the tail end of 6/20 after the DM posted. As long as you post on the 3-day-Friday in response to the DM, you'll have met your quota. I will be looking at the X's on the bottom of the screen as an initial indicator. If I see too many, I'll scroll through your posts and check for the required quality posts for the week. An example is Matt's posting for the week. He has two X's, but only one missed post. We are all in very different timezones, so issues like this are going to happen. It is a little more "work" for me, but I want to do a quality job as ADM.

Bring out the Imp - (DM RobC)  d20+4=19 ; d20=10 ;

Shonti takes the rod from his pack. He studies the imp for signs of magic - and finds them. There are no other discernable auras within 60ft other than those of the party.

Shonti's knowledge of the planes tell him that this is indeed a true imp. Often called as familiars for evil wizards, they are also common minions of greater demons and devils. They are more often pests than any real threat.

The majority of the party decide that regardless of the words the imp speaks, the mission still stands. Free what slaves can be freed, and if possible, coordinate retaking Drakemeade from the inside.

Bruagh declares the creature evil, and moves to attack - but he is unable to reach the imp while it is perched high above him (I rolled an acrobatics check for you, and with an assumed run up, you still needed a 19 or 20 on the roll. I rolled a 10).

Dernock however, is able to make the height but his accuracy is off as his swing misses to the imps right.

Sam attempts to daze the imp, but it does not seem to be affected (Will Save vs DC14: 19 = Pass)

Devlin lets fly with 2 bolts, and one catches the imp's left wing. It stretches its neck out and hisses.

*BOOM* A loud noise resounds throughout the fortress

The imp turns back to face the party with an evil smile. "The Fhorge is angry again and must be stoked. How many dwarves will be burned alive today, I wonder?" with that, he vanishes from sight.

Shonti only Highlight to display spoiler: {You detect the aura of the imp flying quickly away from the party - south - the direction of the corridor you have just come through}

P1 and P2 hold their daggers in shaky hands. They are wide eyed and unsure where they should be aiming, but if anything moves near them they could swing. "Huh? Bigger rooms?" P1 responds to Shonti "Yes, that way" he points north "lots of rooms. Closed doors. And the main jail. Where those fit to work are kept"

================
Answers to questions asked:

Shonti: How does Spell Failure % work here in the Wold?
You did it perfectly. A 5% failure means a 1-5 roll on a regular D100 would fail

Shonti: Re your Earth Elemental Bloodline...
Using spells, you can have the damage done as Acid (the Earth energy type) rather than fire, ice, etc. How you would like to describe it appearing is completely up to you :) Small stone like pebbles exploding from your hand, a whirling mass of liquid goop covering your hands, completely up to you.

Sarnak: Re Alignment
All party members must be good aligned. If a character commits three acts that are against their alignment, a DM can force a change in alignment.
True Neutral characters are avoided as it would be too easy for a DM to setup a scenario such as "You're in a tavern. A guy offers you 10000gp to backstab the paladin in the group. He says you can keep the loot you take from him" or other such scenario where your alignment could be used to turn you against the rest of the party. It would also mean that Lawful Good characters (especially paladins) would be more likely compelled to leave you.
If a character was trending downwards, they would need to find ways to improve their standing. Acting nobly, heroic, selflessly, etc. And a casting of Atonement wouldn't hurt either :)

Friday June 22nd, 2012 11:29:15 AM

Rob and I are tagging out here. Next post will come Monday. Unless otherwise noted, I'm going with this marching order:

Dernock Kyachi Shinto
Sarnak Sam Shonti
[-----] Braugh Taggart

Devlin or Taggart up ahead.

I'll need to know which one of you two (or both) are scouting up ahead.

Sam (ADM DavidW) -- 18/15/14 -- CMD 14 -- HP 32/32
Friday June 22nd, 2012 12:22:25 PM

"Forget the imp. We need to free the Dwarves. If they are fit to work, they are fit to fight and help us free more Dwarves."

Sam turns to the newly freed Dwarves,"Is there only one central jail, or multiple in different locations?"

Then to the rest of the group,"What of our force above ground. If what the devil said is true, it seems that their presence alone is holding the enemy's attention. Should we warn them in code of a possible ambush and also tell them to hold their position?"

ooc- If we come to a fork in the road with multiple jails, do we go to one together or split the group and go to two? Our group does contain redundancies (a great thing). We can make two equal groups by splitting the stereotypical jobs for a successful party, or we can follow the less risky "never split the group up" rule of gaming. The first gives us the opportunity to free more captives quickly (a ready-made Dwarf army), but creates a higher risk for PC casualties.

Bruagh Stormbringer AC 25/11/21 -- CMD 18/22 -- HP 52/53
Friday June 22nd, 2012 1:32:04 PM

OOC: It's always said that splitting is a terrible idea, but I have seen it work beautifully before. What about:

Group 1:
Devlin
Bruagh
Shinto
Shonti

Group 2:
Taggart
Dernock
Sam
Sarnak (Kyachi)

This way each is a fairly equal group that covers all the bases and we have the PC's who have been here longer with the newer PC's. Makes sense to split like this if we do split the group.

Angry about letting the Devil escape, Bruagh sighs, obviously annoyed.
"Sam, you are right, we certainly need to free as many dwarves as possible. The more we free now, the more likely we are to succeed."

The huge boom gets Shinto's attention, Wha was that? Im t'inkin we need te free t'em dwarves and get movin.. Ain't no dwarves burnin alive on me watch...

He looks to Sam, Did ye not here me gnome? Of course ye should warn them topside; I said that before the boom and the Imp gettin away... Can ye use the mirror on the move boy? We need te get goin b'fore t'em evil dwarves spring t'ey trap on the goodies up top...

Gnomes never listen... Always got they own ideas.... Still wonder what that Imp's purpose was... I don't think he's working with the Duergar, I believe he had his own reasons for delaying us... But what could they be....

Shinto nods his head as Bruagh agrees with Sam about freeing more dwarves Glad we be t'inkin same in ways... Lets get movin, in a hurry...

Shinto hoists his axe back onto his shoulder, its magic still activated in case of an ambush in the halls; he urges the party to move a bit quicker than they have been, but he stays alert to everything he can as they make their way to the 'central jail'....
===================================
Perception- 24 (Sight, Smell, Hearing; didn't include bonuses for stonework..)

OOC: Only reason we should split is, I think, would be because we can fully see that the cells are divided into 2 hallways. If we know cells are down one way, and not sure about the other, we should just free those we know of and then check out the other way as a group... We should be careful guys, Duergar are evil tricky lil baddies...

Friday June 22nd, 2012 4:14:47 PM

Sam looks highly annoyed by the newcomer's comments.

"Part of my question to the group was 'Should we tell them to hold?', not just 'Should we warn them?'. Of course if you were actually listening, you would have heard that...And don't call me boy! I'm an adult! I'm 49!" (I wish my character's name was Dennis and was 37 years old...)

"Dwarves never listen...They always have their own ideas..."

That blast'd Imp is headed back south, the way in which we came from!! Nothin' but a mere pest, I assume, but he could be workin fer the Duergar if they got's a powerful wizard about the lot of 'em, so let's not be too careless here. I'd b willin ta bet that demon is headed topside to take part in the ambush on our kinfolk!
Shonti keeps his Rod of Empowering in his right hand still, and ready to use.
But if we must part ways to free these many dwarves in the quickest possible way, then I say we split ways. But, I fer one will be keepin by me brother's side. Kept each other alive plenty 'nuff times before... Besides, we come as a pair, and I can send ye messages up to a hundred an forty feet away from me if anyt'ing evil be comin our way! Let's MOVE!!

He turns to Dernock, sighing, and pinching the bridge of his nose. He gazes around the tunnel, seeing if there is anyone to overhear them, before blinking out the black lenses from his eyes and he looking at each of them in turn. "Aye. It would be best if we shared Blackaxe's little scheme at this point before it all falls apart."

"The General has made a change of plans. He's split the army into three parts, and once we give the signal, they'll attack from all three tunnels. He figured it'll be easier than a head on assault. He didn't want any of you knowing in case we were captured and forced to talk."
He looks around at Braugh, then the brothers, and finally his eyes rest on Sam. "...Now I've seen groups fall to infighting before. We need to stick together, or they've already won." He replaces the lenses, his face once again completely concealed.

Devlin lets out a gruff sigh before turning to the group. Than lets get moving and get these prisoners free. I don't think we are going ta be able ta just flit in undo the latch and go. We still have a fight on our hands before the fightin begins! Once we make the doors ta the prison we need ta make sure we are ready. Sam ya said you could make someone invisible? If so make me invisible just as the door is open and I will go in ahead of the group ta find a good spot ta hide. The rest come in with the "prisoners" and try ta confuse the guards. Once the fightin starts I can take out someone from my position and lookin like a duergar myself maybe cause some confusion as well. Anyone else have an idea before we go?

Sarnak would nod at Taggart "Indeed, were far better off sticking together and attempting to end this quickly. It's true that in a large group it's harder to hide, but it's also a bit easier to silence our opponents before they speak when we have the force to back it up." He looks to Kyachi for a moment then back to the group. "There's a small problem with that plan though, how do you explain Kyachi with our group? If I desummon her I don't have anything else in my arsenal that's anywhere near as strong, but at least if she's not present we can fit the idea of Duergar bringing in prisoners fairly easily."[b]
Kyachi looks among the members of the group and shrugs slightly, her tail swaying uneasily. [b]"I could hang back a bit, I'm fast enough to be able to assist while being out of sight, but it might be for the best if I'm not in this ambush. What does everyone else think?"
She and Sarnak would follow with the group if they moved forward, as she waited on the groups call for if she should be present or not.

The group continues onward towards the jail. Hugging the walls whenever possible and with the help of the prisoners, the party is able to progress smoothly.

Since Devlin has stealth/perception checks up there, I'm having him in the lead.

Keeping to the shadows several steps ahead of the party, Devlin begins to pick up sounds of a few sets of metal armor clinking against itself as its wearer shifts & notes faint shadows being cast on the floor coming from around the next corner.

As he approaches, a single pair of footsteps start to move towards Devlin.

Quietly Devlin places a gold piece on the ground before backing up into the shadows further down the hall. With a grim look on his face the rogue points to Sam than points to the corner before working his fingers like a spell caster.

Stealth = 20
Perception = 10

OOC: Think you can charm him Dave? If so we may have some good intel on the prison and an easy way in. If not taggert and I should be able to make quick quiet work of him.

Sam nods to Devlin, gulps, and stealths ahead. (stealth=22)

He gets to the point where he detects the presence of the enemy and waits to ambush him with a charm person spell. Sam does his best to stay hidden and hopes the Duergar is interested in the coin and does not see him cast the spell. (DC=16)

After the spell is cast, and regardless of the outcome, Sam steps out and attempts to baffle the Duergar in undercommon, "Can you please help me? I'm lost and looking for my Duergar friend Bortock?" (bluff=24)

ooc-Let's hope this works! If not it is going to be party time for all the melee-hungry dwarves of the Forged!

Sarnak and Kyachi nod and stick near the back to wait and see if the ambush works before attempting to get involved.

OOC: Question, I've realized that the idea I originally had for my Eidolon isn't going to work until she's gone up by a couple levels, and given how long it takes to level in this group is it possible on next level up I can swap around one of her feats so I can pick a set of abilities that work well right now? (I'm making a char for a Tap group that uses the idea i originally had for Kyachi, and I'm going to swap Kyachi's primary and secondary roles to something more useful for the setting were in.)

Monday June 25th, 2012 9:37:03 PM

Creeping right along while having his flanks covered by Shinto and Sarnak, Shonti is going through his spells in his mind trying to prepare for what is up ahead. Seeing Devlin set the "Coin Trap" for the Duergar guard up ahead, Shonti hopes that this will work. If not, it will likely raise suspicion very quickly. Rod of Empowering still in hand, Shonti is trying to be as quiet as possible to avoid being heard by the guard.
Whispering to Shinto, and the few that might hear him, Shinto, guys, I'm going to need a clear path once we get into the thick of this situation. But as you know, I will not survive long if you stray too far from me brother. I have some tricks up my sleeve, that will help us take out many a Duergar, this I promise.

Hiding places are taken as an armor-clad duergar pokes his head around the corner, scowling face scanning up and down the lane. It's eyes start to probe the shadows Devlin hides in, only to be drawn away by the glint of gold lying on the ground.

Smiling at his good fortune, the duergar goes to claim his prize as Sam's spell hits him. Not wasting any time, the gnome confidently strides forth and asks, "Can you please help me? I'm lost and looking for my Duergar friend Bortock?" Unfortunately for him, the duergar seems to know gnomes aren't supposed to be wandering around down here and draws forth a battle-axe that looks like it's seen it's share of battle.

"What is this, then?" the duergar shouts. A commotion can be heard from the junction he came from almost immediately. "I don't know what'cher talking about, gnome, but you have two seconds to get on yer knees before chop'em off those stubby legs!" His eyes start to focus on the rest of the party hiding in the shadows, but it looks like he doesn't notice them just yet.

Ugly its getting Shinto thinks as he springs into action, moving quickly as his stubby legs will carry him he makes his way to the Duergar.

Here goes boys, Lets show these devil dwarves what real dwarves are made of ey?

As he closes in on his prey he lets out his activation words turning his Dwarven waraxe into an axe of Icy Death.

Kinees Nulga!!! He screams as he gets next to the Duergar, gripping his axe in both hands he swings The Frozen Soul at the Duergars neck.

OOC: Is there any chance Kyachi could be at the lead of the hidden group instead of in the middle? She would back off but she'd stay in a position she could charge from, likely her at I4 and sarnak at I3. I'm going to make 2 posts, one assuming she's in front, and one assuming she's in the rear.

---------If Kyachi has LoS:--------
Sarnak, seeing that they were exposed fully, wastes no time in casting enlarge person on his Eidolon, going for intimidation and power while they still had surprise

Kyachi upon seeing they were revealed quickly charges forward, attempting to unleash her rage on the Duergar before he could call more.

Grapple: 11 (Not going to go further, I know this isn't beating his CMD)

Claw: 25

Claw: 30 (Natural 20, confirm:19)
Damage: 7

AC -4 from listed

------If Kyachi does not have LoS-------

Sarnak quickly casts shield on his Eidolon, a emphereal purple plate of energy appearing around her to deflect against attacks.

Upon seeing they were exposed Kyachi leaps into action, attempting to run forward and deliver a bite to the duergar and attempt to bring him down before he can speak again.

Bite: 17

OOC: @ Dernock. If she las line of sight then run up and climb onto her as she moves and do the strategy we had earlier.

DM Carl: the order I copied/pasted from earlier had Kyachi in the rear, so I'm going with that. Also, changing your action based on what happens is fine; changing your rolls is not. In this case, it works out in your favor.

Dernock see's Everyone leaping in to take down the duergar. And noticing kyachi's rapid expansion, takes to get her back and stand balacing on her back.

OOC Have to make the assumption Dernok is next to Kyachi... Otherwise the rolls need to apply to next round.

Until Dernock gets more ranks in ride, I think kyachi would work better as a moving platform... mount as as a move action, one acrobatics check to 'surf' on Kyachi's back, another to make the leap which i think counts as another move action. Probably need another to go through the Duergars square without the AOO

Acrobatics for balance check: 14
Acrobatics for the leap: 18
Acrobatics for the matrix style tumble of bad assness: 18

Otherwise Dernock takes a double move action to move next to kyachi and get on her back before she charges.

Seeing the duergar isn't buying the ruse, Shinto is the first to drop it as he runs screaming towards his foe.

Seeing the gig is up, Sarnak enlarges Kyachi, who thunders down the corridor and rend's the duergar's face and throat. Seeing the chance to execute the maneuver Dernock had in his head, he leaps on the back of the charging Kyachi as he charges, only to watch his feet fly from under him as he lands on the beast's back. He manages to roll back to his feet (used your second acrobatics roll), but doesn't end up where he wanted to go.

Bolts fly from Taggart, Sam, and Devlin. While a few go wide, enough hit the duegar as he reels from Kyachi's assault. By the time he hits the ground, he is very much dead.

Shonti and Bruagh move up to prepare for more arrivals. Shonti tries to keep to the shadows, but figures he's been had when another duergar points right at him and shouts out, "There! Behind the loud-mouth with the fancy axe!"

Bruagh suddenly find himself face-to face with two more duergar as the dead one's companions double-time it to the fray. Several more can be seen behind him as well.

Behind the front lines, 3 spell crafters can be seen preparing for battle. Some of the effects of their spells are readily apparent as twin missiles errupt from a wizard and strike Shonti, and another becomes encased in a shimmering aura (spellcraft DC 11 to know).

Shonti takes 5 damage from the magic missiles.

OOC: If Shonti can cast this to hit the Wizard, and the caster right next to him, (W & C1, directly between F15 & F16) he will. If not, then directly upon the Wizard.

A) A sphere of fire erupts directly between the Dueargar Wizard, and the caster next to him. It burns heavy and slow.

B) A sphere of fire erupts directly around the Duergar Wizard, engulfing him completely. It burns heavy and slow.

DM Carl: An empowered flaming sphere would do 3d6 damage + 50% of the roll, not 4d6. It also just occupies 1 square. Since I can't break down what the first three d6s were, roll 3d6 in a private post to me.

Devlin greets the newcomers with a firebomb, immolating 4 of them, though one seems able to avoid the blast by hiding behind his neighbor.

Shonti realizes the need to neutralize his fellow caster quickly and sends a flaming sphere to do the job. The wizard seems to be caught off guard and lets forth a stream of expletives as only a duergar can.

Taggart lets loose with an arrow that goes wide, as the duergar turns to mock him, a second arrow buries itself in his shoulder.

Bruagh calls upon his deep well of inner strength to deliver a flurry of blows against the duergar in front of him, but only connects with one.

Sam inspires his companions for the coming battle while preparing for his next attack.

Sarnak speeds up his companions while Kyachi steps over the first casualty and delivers a fatal bite to the remaining duergar (#3 down).

Shinto has a few choice words for duergar#5 before burying his axe in him.

Dernock recovers gracefully and joins the party at the front lines. You don't have enough movement to get to L11. Putting you at L10.

Bruagh, seeing the way is clear now, charges through the enemies to engage the casters. Duergars #1 and 4 attack in a flurry of blows as the paladin moves through their ranks. He is able to fend off most of them, but is tag-teamed as makes his final step and takes an axe from #1.

Braugh takes 10 slashing damage.

Seeing their casters threatened, several duergar break off to attack Braugh. Duergar #1 goes the long way to stand next to the cleric before lashing out as #4 comes up from behind, but Braugh easily avoids the blows thanks to his armor.

Duergar #6 charges forth at Kyachi after seeing it kill two of his companions. (Kyachi may make an AoO against the duergar due to it's reach while enlarged) The attack connects as #7 joins the fray, though #7 is unable to land a blow.

Kyachi takes 5 damage.

Duergar #5 isn't much for chatting, evidently. It ignores Shinto's taunt, but still seems to have been effected by it as his attack goes far, far astray.

Realizing the pickle he's in, the wizard vanishes from view. Perception rolls to see where he's headed.

Finding himself face to face with an armed and dangerous paladin, Cleric2 takes a 5' step back before sneering and casting his spell.

Braugh needs to make a DC16 will save or be held.

The first cleric makes an effort to get away from the ball of fire that engulfed his companion before stoping, smirking at Shinto, then opening up a portal directly in front of him. From the portal rises a pulsing mass of flesh; arms and legs appear, grope hopefully, then vanish back into the muck. Anguished faces surface only to be pulled in a moment later. The monstrosity lashes out at Shonti, missing at first but bludgeoning him and leaving a smily, foul smelling residue on the second attack.

Shonti takes 2 damage.

Kyachi grins at seeing the duergar charge her and grunts at the strike she received as she attacks back in turn, reaching out to bite D6 as he approaches within her range, and then attempts to deliver a vicious attack against him but is set off guard by the appearance of the creature next to her, the creature diverting her focus just enough to for her to miss on her following strikes.

DM Carl: Rake doesn't work the way you're posting here. From the prd:

Rake (Ex) A creature with this special attack gains extra natural attacks under certain conditions, typically when it grapples its foe. In addition to the options available to all grapplers, a monster with the rake ability gains two free claw attacks that it can use only against a grappled foe. The bonus and damage caused by these attacks is included in the creature's description. A monster with the rake ability must begin its turn already grappling to use its rake--it can't begin a grapple and rake in the same turn.

That last sentence is the important one. This ruling has been confirmed by the PTB on the rules board already last time this question came up.

Sam quickly moves up while aiming his crossbow. The bolt strikes home, the duergar's blood boiling from the wound as the holy ammunition pierces his chest.

Bruagh laughs off the cleric's magic with taunt that doesn't seem to faze his opponent. The smug look on the duergar's face is soon replaced with the paladin's holy axe as two swings take the dark cleric's head clean off.

Dernock takes a careful step to his left and looks for a target, seeing the demon behind him handled, he turns his attention to the duergar nearby. His shield bloodies the darkblood's nose while his axe, while connecting, draws no blood. Its effect is seen, however, as the duergar's eyes roll back into it's head and he collapses unconcious on the floor. Note: you didn't call a target, but mentioned you were attacking a duergar. In the future, call your targets. Also, J10 was occupied by Kyachi, so I moved you to K10.

Shinto trusts his brother to handle the monstrosity before him and continues attacking the duergar in front of him, slicing him open and freezing the wound shut.

Devlin decides this new demon needs to be delivered from this world, but the thing's undulations make it too difficult a target, but not for Shonti who channels electricity into it until it's nothing more than a foul smelling puddle.

Kyachi, seeing the unconcious duergar, takes a mouthful of the thing's throat and rips it out as Sarnak causes a pool of grease to appear under the remaining cleric. Unable to find any footing, the cleric soon winds up on his back.

Seeing the prone target, Taggart sends two arrows towards him as Shonti directs his flaming sphere to follow. The cleric screams in anguish as lightning siezes his muscles and fire blackens his flesh. Barely clinging to life, the cleric sits up with hatred in his eyes and casts what he knows to likely be his final spell. A burst of painfully loud sound errupts among the party, echoing along the nearby walls.

Sarnack, Shonti, Kyachi, Dernock, and Shinto all take 2 sonic damage and must make a DC16 fort save or be stunned next round.

Arcane mumblings can be heard right before the wizard appears again. A rain of gravel and pebbles errupts over the heads of most of the party, littering the ground and making movement difficult at best.

Everyone accept Shinto and Braugh takes 5 damage. The area highlighted on the map is now difficult terrain. Movement limited to 5' as a full round action that provokes AoO.

Duergar#1 and #4 take a 5' step to the left to flank Bruagh and attack! The paladin barely dodges #1, only to allow #4 the opportunity to sink his axe into Bruagh's thigh.

Bruagh takes 8 slashing damage.

Duergar #5 trades blows back with Shinto, hooking his axe over the newly doned shield and sinking it into shoulder.

Shinto takes 10 slashing damage.

Duergar #7 has seen too many guards fall to Kyachi already and withdraws towards H12 before taking off down the hallway in a panic, screaming out for more guards.

Withdraw action used - no AoO.

Shonti's head rings as the cleric's spell echoes around him. He is unable to focus on his flaming sphere, which continues to burn away regardless and snuff the life from the prone cleric.

Stung by debris, Devlin decides not to move through it and hurls an explosive at the wizard, who goes to scream as he is engulfed by flames only to breath it in and scorch his lungs. He collapses without a sound and continues to smolder. Duergar #5 takes a step forward as the blast stings his back. This is the opening Shonti was looking for; his axe caves in the darkblood's chest. He commends his brother as he kicks the dead duergar off his axe.

Calm under pressure, Sam and Taggart take aim at the fleeing duergar. While Sam's flies wide, Taggart puts an arrow in each lung, dropping him and silencing him instantly.

Sarnak and Kyachi both reel from the sound burst. After a few seconds, their heads start to clear again.

As the majority of the party listens for the invisible duergar, Bruagh goes on the offensive but hits nothing; guess the duergar decided not to stick around.

As the party scans the corridor, a grinding of rubble and small dust cloud betrays the location of one of the duergar. Taggart and Sam attack with bow and grenade as Shonti directs his flaming sphere towards the sound. The outline of the duergar briefly flashes in the fire and a single arrow from Taggart seems to vanish in mid-air (with an satisfyingly appropriate expletive in undercommon).

Everyone who took the time to look with the exception of Kyachi picks up that the duergar was in J18.

Though obviously injured, there's no body left behind when the smoke clears and no sign at all of the other duergar.

Not being able to 'see' the other duergar and the one they did locate is ethier dead or gone as well Shinto wipes the Duergar blood off his blade using the loose cloth on the bottom of his shirt. He places his shield on his back, addressing the party;

Well, t'at was a good warm up lads; I could use sum healin too if ye given em out HA! He gives off a grin while raising his axe in the air with both hands on the shaft he arches his back, then holding it out in front of him he twists both ways giving off loud cracks as his back pops. Making two quick hops in place he stands at the ready, glancing around the room figureing out where to start his search.

Where to from here, we gotta keep movin, he says as he starts his search at the northern wall, the one t'at got away is prolly goin' fer back-up now. Maybe we could hide up the hall a bit an ambush their ambush, Wat ye thinkin lads? He stops for a second as he makes his way over to the door;

T'ink we should be headin down te hall t'em Darkbloods fled down? Or t'is where we gotta go? Lemme see... He checks the door out, is it locked, whats it made of, how big is it; does it seem like dwarven construction, can anything be heard from the other side?

Seeing the flares surge around the invisible Duergar, Shonti can't help but feel a bit good about himself after this last battle.
I wonder if that wizard might be holdin a book full o' spells? Maybe a magic wand? Let's see here..... Making his way through the rubble, Shonti walks to the dead wizards body. He stops just before the puddle of blood surrounding the slain caster, waves his free hand, and begins chanting.
Give me sight to the arcane,
For I call upon the same.
Show to me the Divine,
for the peace of my own mind...

Looking the wizards body over, Shonti searches for anything magical, or otherwise useful.. Shonti also looks at the other bodies around the room, and around the room itself, taking a good hard look at anything putting off any sort of magical aura.
If Shonti see's any magical auras, he will take the time necessary to spend 3 rounds studying the aura(s), to find out how many there are, what they are coming from, and from what school of magic. IF there are any magical items, Shonti will also try to find out what spells (if any) are coming from what magic item(s) (IF ANY)....

Quick post today since it's a holiday. Full post will come tomorrow.

The duergar wizard's rubble seems to melt away into cracks in the floor; the party is free to move around w/o difficulty again. Sam retrieves the wand and heals the party up from the scrapes they took during combat as Devlin inspects the door the duergar were guarding. It is indeed locked, and by the looks of it it's quite a sturdy lock at that.

Shonti casts detect magic, but the only magic in the immediate area is on the party itself. Those searching the bodies note their weapons and armor are of base quality - these were likely lowly guards. No keys are found on the bodies either; apparently they weren't to be trusted with what's inside.

Producing his tools, Devlin manages to make some progress in getting the thing open.

Continue rolling if you want to pick the lock. Taggart, I'll email you your findings later today.

Kyachi nods to Devlin. "Regardless, I agree, we should move out sooner rather than later."

Shonti nods, first to his brother, then Devlin, Braugh, Sam, Taggart, and Dernock in confirmation if they wish to carry one of the devices.
Didn't realize you've had a such a history with these bombs..... An I'm sorry to hear about yer homes.. I've no "need" or want to hold onto any of these. Although i'm quite sure between me an Sam, we can probably figure these things out if you want to later.. For now, we need to move. We've been here too long already!
Shonti turns to walk out the room, and down the hall.
ready then?
