Tahni -- AC18/14/15 -- CMD 10 -- HP 35/35 -- Rob C
Sunday November 27th, 2011 7:32:18 PM

OOC:

One slight problem with that plan....
From the Portable Hole listing: "It contains enough air to supply one Medium creature or two Small creatures for 10 minutes."
Now, there are ways to get around that, but I'm wondering if we're over complicating things. Also, for wondrous items - we don't need a forge/heat source :) Granted, for armor, weapons and rings we do - but for wondrous items & constructs, we don't.

Why not just an item that grants the Fast Forge Feat? Plenty of other items grant the equivalent of a feat, and from memory, they cost around 20k. The big bonus of the fast forge is to be able to craft things twice as quick, and that is enough to steer me away from the portable hole approach.

Fyi, Tahni's plans are as follows:
Level 5: Fast Forge
Level 7: Cooperative Crafting. This will allow Delrid to craft things for half the gp and half the time, as well as having Tahni there to provide spells.

So just with those two alone (and who knows what other perks you could throw in there should Delrid go the fixer route), Delrid & Tahni would be crafting things for half the gp and one quarter the time :)
Example 1: Mirror of Life Trapping. Normal cost to buy: 200,000gp. Normal Cost to build: 100,000gp. With this approach, cost to build is 50,000gp, so 25days crafting, reduced to 13 days in the fast forge with Tahni's help.
Example 2: +9 Weapon (+1 Holy Keen Vorpal Sword?). Normal cost to buy: approx 160,000. Normal cost to build: 80,000. With this approach, cost to build is 40,000gp, so 20days crafting, reduced to 10 days in the fast forge with Tahni's help.

(OOC: So yall are designing a Cooperative Crafting feat to reduce the price and days. That stacked with Fast Forge feat. Neat.
Devlin- slotless items are a-ok as long as you pay the increased costs associated with the item. Approved! But isn't your wardd-themed item verry similar to the vigor scabbard?)
*************************************************************
Devlin, Deldrid, Tahni, and Braugh say they will support a retaking of the ancient dwarven fortress, the Oracle adding the caveat that it should not be done recklessly.

BlackAxe nods, "Aye, it's decided then. I shall raise the issue. Eat and sleep well. On the morrow we shall convene."

You are all given rooms and bath.

Towards the end of the night, Girtha passes by the table and whispers to Jarga's ear, "Come, let me show you the royal suite."[/b], her hand guides yours....

---------------The world seems to rest-------------

In the middle of the night, Tahni tosses and turns, visions blind her mind's eye
Your running across a dark lava-encrusted landscape
A flash of light in the distance.
THe earth shakes

The Oracle awakens and feels a deep pressure on her chest.

-----------The morning----------------

BlackAxe, in full military regalia, stands waiting, "Come, we meet within the hour."

Then you are marching through the city of MountainBurrow.
Gnomes move here and there farming, crafting, and building into the very mountainside.
One excited little guy runs from a far tunnel jumping for joy. A small crowd gathers and you hear a lot of Oooooo and Ahhhh
He holds a very pretty amythest gem.

Dende runs from the group and gives Tahni a big hug, he joins the caravan.

BlackAxe leads you to the fortified stone wall that is the fortress at the center of the city.

You enter and look about the immediate courtyard where gnome and dwarves alike train with blade and bow.

You see Roger RedForge, the elderly, yet muscled red-bearded dwarf standing shirtless in a circle drawn in the dirt with a shield and wooden axe.
Across from him is an older gnomish man with a white gotee, holding an odd hook-hammer double weapon.
A ref says, Begin

axe swipe, duck, block, hammer donk, reposte, shield bash, sidestep, duck.

The gnomish man ducks and tumbles on the ground around RedForge, knocking him on the knees twice with hammer.
RedForge grunts in pain, and counters by bull-rushing his gnomish counterpart, pushing him out of the circle.
The onlookers shout in approval.

RedForge wipes his face with towel and says, "Always more than one way to claim victory.", and he helps the gnome up.

They both begin to put on loose-fitting clothes, stretching their old yet fit muscles, the Gnomish man moves to shake the hand of Braugh, "Marquin Luecraft, general of the MountainBurrow defense corps, and it appears brute strength trumps superior skill yet again?"

RedForge scoffs as the pair join you on the walk.

Tally is seen blessing the heads of several soldiers that are about to go on a scouting mission.
A light blue hue surrounds the three gnomish and one dwarven scouts as Tally hums a tune to Flower.
They each thank the cleric and give alms before leaving on their mission. They nod with smiles on their faces at each of you.

Tally says to BlackAxe, "As you ordered Sir, they are off to gather intel on DrakesMead. With any luck, we should hear back from them via a Whispering Wind spell in 3 days."

BlackAxe nods, and Tally joins.

You enter the center fortress, walking through a large torch-lit, tapestry-decorated hall.

A large room, with a huge table and many ornate chairs lies before you.
On the table are many maps and tablets with numbers and figures on them.

BlackAxe says, "Please sit, we have many things to discuss."

In the room you see Mr. GoodButtom eating grapes who waves you at you. Next to him, Mrs. GoodButtom types frantically into a type-writer like device.

There is also a very young gnomish man in a blue coat and orange straw hat, who smiles and waves at you, "Hi, I'm Alchy, CEO and founder of Alchy-mist, the potion for your notion brand. Pleasure to be a part of the decision-making process! May all our endeavors be prosperous."

Sitting next to him are a veeeeerrrryyy old gnomish couple. Their hair and skin are both dingy and grey, as the stones themselves. Somehow you hear their names in the back of your head, as if echoed from the cave walls around you ,Titinia and Oburon. They smile at you.

BlackAxe speaks, "And so begins the fourth convene since RiddlePort's destruction.
With the partial destruction of the bridge into The Scab and happenings of RiddlePort, it seems we may be the last foothold for our people to establish our home in this land.
We don't know when reinforcements will arrive... if ever.
It is obvious that some forces are working against us, so we must work harder to prepare ourselves.
We know how safe a fortress such as DrakesMeade is. And we also know the treasures that lie within.
With our current strength and with the help of these heroes, it is possible to retake DrakesMeade from Duergar forces and shift the balance of power in our favor. We can then use the forge to create what we need to protect what we have and eventually conquer the Scab! We must show our rivals we are strong and not to be trifled with!"

He points at DrakesMeade on his Map of the Scab

....Then, there is a moment of silence...

The incredibly Old Gnomish woman, Titinia, speaks soft like the wind, "War results in death. We are few."

Mrs. GoodButtom then perks up from her typing and shows a piece of parchment on the table, "There are currently 6,499 Gnomish and 1,042 Dwarven lives dependent on MountainBurrow for sustainment. 812 Gnome and 398 Dwarves are military-trained. A few hundred more are of able-bodied age and could be drafted."

Then Alchy says looking at the , "Indeed the investment may be profitable, but a march across the Mangrove Flats is not a pleasant journey." he states, pointing to the large expanse of sandy-looking planes that rest between the three eastern mountain ranges.

RedForge looks to his Gnomish friend, Marquin and nods, "The Duergar have held DrakesMeade for nearly a century now. They are swift to tunnel and dig in defenses. The place was meant to withstand assaults from Giants! It would take most, if not all of our forces to even make success a possibility. MountainBurrow will be vulnerable, and left more weak than we currently are win or lose!"

BlackAxe looks to Braugh, Devlin, Deldrid, Tahni and the rest of the heroes with a raised eyebrow.

Tahni -- AC18/14/15 -- CMD 10 -- HP 35/35 -- Rob C
Monday November 28th, 2011 2:30:29 AM

OOC: Nice post, Addison! Oh, and if Jarga catches any sort of disease he has to cure it himself :)

Tahni awakens during the night from her restless sleep. The visions she has started to see during the day feel clearer in her dreams, but are still confusing. Something is happening in the Scab, and whatever it is, it makes her feel uneasy. She lies back in bed and stares at the ceiling until she is enveloped by sleep again.

In the morning, Tahni reciprocates Dende's hug. For such a young boy who has been through so much, he certainly has matured. But such is the nature of the dwarves. Once he is out of earshot, Tahni has a word with Bruagh "I believe our young friend here wishes to be a paladin, and has decided to model himself on you. He could do worse I suppose." she says with a smile and chuckles as they walk.

It is Tally though that Tahni has been wanting a word with, so is grateful when the cleric joins the procession. "Good morning to you Tally. Have you checked in on Tina and Guy this morning? If I can be of assistance with any other patients here, please let me know"

Once in the convene, Tahni feels compelled to give a nod of her head to the two gnome elders, then listens intently to the discussions. "Nearly a century? No doubt the Duergar have a tight grasp of DrakesMeade." Not being the most military minded, she waits to see what suggestions the group may have.

OOC: Question to DM: The 3 days for the scouts to return - can we assume we have 3 days crafting? :)

Delrid - 12/12/10 - CMD13 - HP 29/29
Monday November 28th, 2011 5:21:42 AM

OOC: Rob, 5th level is a year away, a portable hole can be had now. I'm pretty sure the 10 minutes of air only applies if you CLOSE the hole... Are you in? If not, Delrid is going to buy one himself.

Delrid is extremely appreciative. He has never had the opportunity to witness, let alone partake in, any social or noble ongoings. As he sees the very old couple, his fingertips instinctively reach for the ring in his pocket. He catches himself, then scans the room to see if anyone else noticed. He feels tears of shame and rejection start to form, and focuses more intently on the words of Alchy.

Delrid is very hesitant to speak at the council, but if asked he will pose the following question: "What of a diplomatic envoy? Huddled alone and separately, noble races fear the scab and the mountains. Together could they share prosperity?"

Monday November 28th, 2011 2:45:39 PM

Sam wakes up with a smile on his face. It has been awhile since he had enjoyed such favorable accommodations. He feels recharged and ready to retake the dwarven territory.

Once at the meeting with Blackaxe and the gnomes, Sam listens intently. He analyzes every detail of data and point of interest on the map. After thinking quietly, Sam waits for his turn to speak.

For those who have yet to meet me, I am Sam, the group's bard and self-proclaimed, fledgling tactician. I have a few questions. What is the estimate on the numbers of Duergar forces? Is there anyway we can lure any number of them out for an ambush? Lastly, do we have any knowledge of secret entry into their caves by which a small force could enter and surprise them?

Jarga -- HP 18/18 -- CMD 11 --- AC 10/11/10
Monday November 28th, 2011 4:40:19 PM

Though Jarga has had a ... long night he is refreshed and whistling merrily as the group walk through the city. He keeps an eye out for a vendor that might sell flowers or sweets that he might buy on the way back. He knows his stay here is likely temporary but why not make the most of a small glint of joy in an otherwise dark few years.

He settles in to listen to the council and, on hearing Delrid talk of peace he agrees:

" Aye, what of diplomacy? Words can often end wars in lieu of slaughter... " he pauses, and looks to the floor ashamed for a moment before looking back up " ... and so can a well placed dagger in the dark. "

Devlin -- 18/14/14 -- DR 1/- -- CMD 16 -- HP 28/28
Monday November 28th, 2011 5:45:13 PM

I'm all fer being that dagger, we tried diplomacy with a small band we caught. It only got us escaped prisoners and more headaches. If I know the darkbloods they will use any sign of diplomacy as a means ta get an assasin close ta our leaders. They have no reason ta talk with us, they have a fortified position and means to hold out against a long siege.

Devlins voice has been steadily raising while he speaks. He takes a second to clear his thoughts and calm his voice before continuing.

I don't know much about large battles but I do know how ta enter a place unseen and cause mayhem. If the others agree I will lead them into the hold and attack a key position or target of opportunity. This should draw off some of their forces and cause confusion allowing Blackaxe and Redforge to lead the main group in a suprise attack.

Sheesh I sound like the morons from the tales my sister used ta tell me. I know how those really ended. Not with the hero victorious but with him in chains or worse.

Devlin sits and listens to the others ideas quietly contemplating if this will work or not.

Bruagh speaks as an advisor and diplomat rather than a friend. "I've had dealings with the Duergar of the Scab in the past. The have proven themselves less than honorable and completely untrustworthy. They were, after all, the force that destroyed the bridge at Riddleforge. I vote that we forgo any attempts at resolving this with diplomacy as doing so will only give away our most valuable asset. Surprise. If we know a way to enter with a small yet powerful force, gaining entry through hidden passages or the like, we might save countless lives. However, I am not naive enough to think that dedicated ourselves with anything less than our all will do anything aside from be our downfall. I say we go hard, go with our all, and retake Drakemead."

Diplomacy: 25

Tahni -- AC18/14/15 -- CMD 10 -- HP 35/35 -- Rob C
Monday November 28th, 2011 8:27:02 PM

Having heard other members of the party speak, Tahni then chooses to provide her input "Reluctantly, I must agree with Bruagh and Devlin. Whilst I would prefer to choose a diplomatic route, I see no argument or barter we could offer that would make the Duergar give up DrakesMeade. If taking back Drakesmeade is necessary, then I also agree that if possible, a small party should try to infiltrate the fortress first. If timed correctly, they may be able to cause enough disruption to the defences - perhaps even open the entrances - to allow other forces to enter." Tahni sighs and looks around the room "What concerns me though is this new type of weapon the Duergar appear to be in possession of. We encountered such a device on the bridge, and that one device alone destroyed it. It is possible a similar weapon was used in Riddleport. If the Duergar have this kind of weaponry at their disposal, then we must consider any kind of assault against them carefully"

Monday November 28th, 2011 9:18:19 PM

OOC:
Hey Ben (Delrid),

Sorry, I still can't see the value of having the mobile forge at this level.

Use of a Forge
The forge would only be required for crafting rings, armor or weapons - and noone has those feats yet. Creating wondrous items does not require a forge or heat source. Creating non-magical items takes so long due to the broken PF rules, that they really cannot be done without the Fast Forge feat (and then some!)

Ability to Craft on the Road
If it's a matter of crafting items "on the road", then the rules already allow for that: "If the caster is out adventuring, he can devote 4 hours each day to item creation, although he nets only 2 hours' worth of work. This time is not spent in one continuous period, but rather during lunch, morning preparation, and during watches at night. If time is dedicated to creation, it must be spent in uninterrupted 4-hour blocks."

So given we have no need for a forge, heat source, or dedicated crafting area, I can't see the point of the portable hole approach. You may have something different in mind that I haven't considered though.

cheers!

OOC: Devlin/Matt, the caster level requirement is 5th, so no. If Addison can waive that, or you can wait for Delrid to hit 5th level, then "heck yeah!"

Delrid agrees that subterfuge is perhaps our best option. If no further politicking goes on, he will go to the catacombs to disgorge his coin purse.

Following the catacombs trip, Delrid begins work on a Vambrace of Arcane Vitality. It will be a match of his Vambrace of Intervention for his right hand, but with embedded pearls of power instead of raised ridges for wand equivelants.

Craft Metalwork = 22. These gnomish forges just don't feel right...

Tahni -- AC18/14/15 -- CMD 10 -- HP 35/35 -- Rob C
Tuesday November 29th, 2011 5:47:38 PM

OOC: Caster level requirements for creating items can be bypassed by adding +5 to the DC

Also (and here's the best bit, that I only found out a few months ago)... The CL listed on the item is not the CL that is required to create the item. Oooohhh.

Item 1 - The CL definition has nothing about level required to create the item: "The caster level determines the item's saving throw bonus, as well as range or other level-dependent aspects of the powers of the item (if variable). It also determines the level that must be contended with should the item come under the effect of a dispel magic spell or similar situation"

Item 2 - The errata on the pearl of power for the slam dunk: "Though the listed Caster Level for a pearl of power is 17th, that caster level is not part of the Requirements listing for that item". It goes on for a bit, but basically says that unless a level in mentioned in the crafting requirements section of the item (eg: Amulet of Natural Armor), then the level you have to be to create an item is the level to cast all spells required in creation.

So the way I interpret the rules, for a Sheath of Bladestealth you need to be caster level 3 (at which point you could cast the required invisibility spell). Alternatively, you could add +5 to the DC if you weren't level 3, and +5 to the DC if you couldn't cast invisibility.

Happy to discuss in more detail, but we should probably take it to email rather than clog the board :)

Construction Requirements

Craft Wondrous Item, invisibility; Cost 2,500 gp

DM Addison
Wednesday November 30th, 2011 3:19:28 AM

The Forged earn their name as servants walk in and out of the great war room handing notes of paper regarding purchases from the catacombs and plans are made out for the construction of great equipment for the danger you are undertaking, though still limited by only being thrice seasoned adventurers.

When Deldrid and Jarga (whose holding a wonderful orchid for his beloved) asks of diplomacy, BlackAxe smiles broadly and says, "Some four score year ago clans sought to negotiate with darkbloods and their kin. Most end up betrayed and slaughtered, some end up... interbreeding." BlackAxe subtly raises and eyebrow at Devlin.

But then everyone's attention is caught by Mrs. GoodButtom, who stops typing and picks up another piece of parchment, "Aye, in the fourth age, DrakesMeade was assaulted by nearly nine-thousand poorly armed and trained clans of Duergar, allegedly united by common hatred. It is estimated the Dwarves under clan BrightHammer fought and slew 90% of the opposing forces. The downfall of the clans was due to prior infiltration by the Duergar, possibly by heavy use of invisibility."

Mr. GoodButtom pops a grape into his love's mouth and she crunches and smiles at him sweetly, humming a little tune.

Alchy says with dismay, "If a thousand survived their assault they could square that number by now, limited only by how deep they can burrow."

Then Siv asks of knowledge on the Duergar forcesgeneral Marquin responds, "We know they have used the great forges of DrakesMeade to advance their technology and power. There have been skirmishes throughout the past years, and one small-scale war where RiddlePort and MountainBurrow banded together. We think Drow were behind that. "

RedForge says, "We have no tracking of supply routes, likely underground or self-sufficient. There are two patrol routes that we know they have, but they don't know we know. Our first scouting mission since RiddlePort's destruction just left. It will take them two days to cross the Mangrove Flats, and should hear back if there is anything interesting."

Tally, the Cleric of Flower responds, "They honor Marteaus, god of suffering and enemy to all that is beautiful. Also, the barriers between planes of Jericho space often break... as you have experienced. Certain Duergar have discovered uses for this."

Then, Braugh, Sam, Devlin, and Tahni all speak of assaulting DrakesMeade from within, possibly cutting off the head of the serpent before the army rushes in.

BlackAxe smiles and says, "See, the Heroes see the value in reclaiming what is ours. With their help we are capable."

From the stone, a reverberating sound of Oburon, the grey gnome's speech is heard, "Since MountainBurrow's beginning, we have kept to ourselves. To begin this path is to never diverge from it."

Titinia places her withered hand on Oburon's. Instantly the room feels light.

BlackAxe says, "We vote."
And he puts his thumb up.
RedForge puts his down. As does Marquin, he shakes his head and says, "We are too few."
Alchy stands up and smiles, putting a thumb high in the air.

Delrid is extremely excited to get his hands on some quality supplies. He immediately dons his ring of sustenance and looks at the churning bustle of the city as a calm washes over him. He feels a peaceful sense of advantage, knowing food and sleep will be less of a distraction.

Delrid returns swiftly to the forge, with so much progress on his mind. He bumps into Devlin immediately upon return, and gladly listens to his friend's request. "Devlin Dealbreaker, I would gladly craft your sheath. In fact, I will start on it first. Do you mind if I keep the same motif as my Vambrace of Intervention and Amulet? I feel the shadowy metal with gold accents feels very natural, and is my hallmark. If you find that acceptable, i should finish today."

"Also, please keep your scroll. I already studied this spell today, and you never know when you'll need it..."

Delrid begins organizing Devlin's equipment. He compares the items to his personal design portfolio, and takes a few measurements. A smile flashes as his gameplan formulates. Grabbin his chalk, he outlines his task sequence on the anvil, like an organized sequence and reference. The chalk runes seem to fly from his fingertips. With a glance, he slips his overcoat to the floor, and an invisible floating hand lifts his apron, which floats to him.

Now, we begin!

DC: 5 + 5 (Caster Level) + 5 (Missing CL Requirement) + 5 (Expedited Crafting) = 20

Craft Metalwork Check = 39. Delrid's comfort and confidence have never been higher.

OOC: DMs, Delrid now has a ring of sustenance, and expedited crafting allows for 1k progress in 4 hours. With the ring, how many 4 hour blocks can Delrid work? If more than 2, Devlin will have his sheath in one day.

Alchy states proudly, "Good call there lads, might as well take a tour of the house before buying the farm right?"

Titinia and Oburon simply smile and nod.

RedForge looks a bit gruff and says, "Aye, but what be the parameters of favorable reports? Sightings or nay?"

BlackAxe slams the table and says "Speculation is a waste of time, let us prepare for what is inevitable."

Tally sighs, "I suppose if not now, then when?"
--------------------------------The Convene Recesses----------------------------

Supplies are shipped in through the catacombs, each dwarf and gnome waking in the morning to neatly wrapped packages. Sam opens a fine oaken box to reveal a golden and black decaled crossbow. Heavy holyness emanates from it.
Siv's armor glows with blue protective runes,

Crate loads of granite, iron ingots, gold bullions, and uncut gems are shipped in from the magical Catacombs supply routes.
A CtC delivery gnome asks, "Jeeze, what are you gonna do with all this stuff?" as he hands Deldrid a paper of receipt to sign, probably thinking Enough pearls of power to coat a fortress in glitterdust if I need to

And thus, Deldrid and Tahni combine forces to craft great works of magic and artisanship, making Devlin a fancy sheath that turns invisible upon placing a blade.
Please roll for whatever else you want to make in this time, just make sure you have the spells required for all these items (Bull's Str for the Belt of Giant Str ect)

Magic seems to ebb and flow throughout the forge

Jarga finds that Girtha is both a fantastic cook and a part-time brewmistress, as there are several casks of homebrews that supply MountainBurrow with ale. What an entrepreneur! When you receive the mobile fire hydrant from the CtC, Girtha laughs and says Go point that thing on some turnip fields!

On the third day, Tally calls you over to his temple.

You feel a gust of wind, and a dwarven voice is heard,
"Day one. Mangrove Flats are a salty landscape allright. I don't see how anything lives here. Marched for 12hours strong, time to get a little nap before breaking camp early. Nothing to report."

A pause

"Day two. Saw an antlion in the distance, stayed clear. Not much else. Salted pork was a bad idea."
You hear a laugh, and a voice in the distance, "That's what she said!"

Pause

Then, Tally directs you to a stone basin filled with crystal water.
In it you see a scene of three dwarves and a gnome, huddled behind a rock.
The Gnome speaks, "Ok, I think its working.
Day three, we spotted a small scouting troupe of four duergar in the distance... well, they were walking on the same routine route that DrakesMeade scouts do but didn't resemble any scouts I've seen."

Then one of the Dwarves keeping watch jumps a bit and looks at you through the pool, "Look, something's happening."

He points in the distance and Tally moves the view of the pool with his hands like an ipad.

In the marshy distance, you see one small duergar walking frantically towards two others.
"Oh wait, those two new guys are scouts, the small guy has.... spectacles?"

Slice. gurgle, plop,

Tally's eyes go big and zooms the view out.

A dwarven head rolls on the ground.

flash... was that... a greatsword?

Then hear a familiar shout, "Marteaus shall flay you in the afterlife."
With a flash of red light, the gnome screams in agony and is turned to ash.

A grey-skinned dwarfess with fine features and supple lips looks at you through the view of the pool and winks, before plugging a crossbow bolt into the device, ending the feed....

Delrid needs to make three emergency scroll purchases - Scroll of Roses Temperature control, Scroll of Fox's Cunning, Scroll of Secret Chest. Once purchased he will start on the following items:
1) Headband of Vast Intelligence and Geography and Nature (+4)
Craft Metalwork DC 5 (Base) + 8 (Caster Level) + 5 (Accelerated) + 5 (requirement) = 23. Success! 39 on the first check, 35 on the second check for Day 2!
2) Bag of Holding
Craft Metalwork DC 5 (Base) + 9 (Caster Level) + 5 (requirement) = 19. Success! 26 on the first check!

Siv purses her lips as she views the scene unfold. "We have lost the initiative." She turns to Blackaxe and the gnomish commanders. "I would seriously suggest delaying any efforts to take the fortress, perhaps even for a few weeks. It will be necessary to allow the duergar to believe that we have abandoned any designs on their holdings and allow their vigilance to slip. They must think we have been intimidated. Meanwhile, we will build our strength in secret and strike quickly once they have relaxed."

She rubs her chin softly in thought. "Might I suggest something? There is a magical item known as a Lord's Banner of Swiftness. It is a knight's standard infused with arcane energy to allow soldiers who view the item to march and toil without weariness. If some of your craftsmen were to construct this item, it would allow you to march to the fortress in half the time. This may be necessary if we are to take them unawares once their defenses are relaxed."

Diplomacy check 14 (Help me out, anyone!)

ooc: I don't have a link (silly web security), but the item allows any character within 1 mile to ignore Constitution checks to forced marches and avoid nonlethal damage if they view the standard once per day. It would cut our traveling time in half.

After the meeting...

"Thank you, Sir Stormbringer. It is an honor to travel and fight with your company. It has certainly helped me to deal with the death of my liege and hirdsmen." She clears her throat and licks her lips. "And might I say, I look with great pleasure on the prospect of working with you in the future. Or rather, with the company. Not to say that I don't look forward to working with you, but..." The shieldmaiden suddenly looks like she regrets speaking her mind and quickly leaves to her quarters, leaving Bruagh standing in the courtyard.

Jarga is overjoyed! Apparently the Catacombs shipped him materials for several of his desired items but actually shipped a complete Decanter of Endless Water instead its construction materials! He assumes they were having a special and is very pleased.

He gives Girtha the orchid and rushes out to test his new toy.

He gives the radishes a good soaking and considers the plans to attack.

He sighs, and knows that his rest here, the simple enjoyment of a garden, of a warm meal, or the company of a wonderful dwarf lass was always overshadowed by the spectres of his family; he must continue his journey, he must sharpen his skills.

He will find his brother and he bring heavy justice upon him....

He looks around and smiles. Afterwards though, he muses, he might just return here.

He joins the discussion with the group

" Are there no maps of DrakesMeade that might assist us ? I mean surely the scum that took the place don't know of every nook and cranny? Every tunnel? Every secret door? "Son of a hell-hound! Is that who I think it is?" Tahni asks, the blood rising to her face. " Lila. She was one of the duergar who blew up the bridge, who we took prisoner, and who escaped from us in Riddleport. The one in the spectacles may be Douglass" Tahni takes a moment to consider the implications. "A full scale assault may be off the table, but there's no reason we can't send a small party to try and interfere with their supply lines, take out some patrols via stealth, and basically try to disrupt the duergar operations as much as possible. Perhaps make them a softer target for a later assault? At the least, we may be able to obtain more information about who we are dealing with. Given Lila had access to one of those explosive devices in the past, it raises the probability of more of those devices being found at Drakesmeade. This is indeed worrying. Should they find the location of MountainBurrow, it would be an easy target for them."

===========

Tahni takes a quiet moment to find Guy and Tina "I hope I'm not intruding, but I wanted to come check on you. How are you both feeling? Look, I know you have both been through so much and I know this can't possibly make up for all you've lost, but I hope it's a start" She then hands them a large package wrapped in white paper, bearing the mark of the catacombs. Inside is a beautiful white wedding dress, a very handsome wedding suit, two golden rings, and a small pouch of agates (2 x Noble Clothes and 2 x Gold Rings purchased in the catacombs. 60gp of agates were won in the GG some months back). "My friends and I will be leaving soon, but if it's ok with you, would you mind if I came back to visit from time-to-time? By then I hope to hear all the marvellous tales of Mr and Mrs Guy Baltar"

===========

Tahni watches nearby as Siv speaks with Bruagh. She watches as the war maiden seemingly gets embarrassed talking to the paladin before rushing off. "I don't like her" Tahni notes to herself with a scowl.

OOC: No offence at all intended to Siv, Miyoshi! I'm trying to picture how Tahni, who has ventured in an all male party for so long, would react to "the new girl". Petty jealousy seemed like fun :)

OOC:

@Delrid: Remember that you can only craft 1 item at a time, time must be spent in 4hr blocks, and no more than 8hrs per day. So given the Headband will take 4 days to craft (1000gp/day accelerated to 2000gp/day. 8000gp worth = 4days) you wouldn't be able to start the bag of holding yet. Unless I read your post in the wrong order and you fully crafted the bag first, and then started the headband? And what of the Sheath?
Devlins Sheath = 1.5 days crafting
Bag of Holding = 1 day crafting
Headband +4 = 4 days crafting
Subtotal: 6.5 days
Given we are only fitting in 3 days of crafting, how are you splitting you time? I'm assuming 1.5 sheath, 1 bag, 0.5 Headband.

As an aside, is Craft (metalwork) really an applicable craft skill for making a Bag of Holding? (From the PRD on Creating Wondrous Items: Skill Used In Creation: Spellcraft or an applicable Craft or Profession skill check.) With your roll and skills, you'd have nailed it with any of them - the metalwork check just seemed weird :)

Finally, this is the one that will help you, rolling low on a craft check and failing it can mean either the item doesn't work, or worse, it's cursed. If you just need a successful roll you are allowed to Take10 on the check. Again, with your "leet skillz" taking 10 gives Delrid some sweet results :)

Delrid continues to contemplate his Annulus of Arcane Acumen, and the power it can bring forth. He seeks to further attune it to the innate magical properties of the Wold and the two bordering realms. It should assist him specifically in understanding magical locations, ley lines, veins of mineral deposits, and potential mining locations (Knowledge Geography and Knowledge Nature).

The Annulus is two golden circles with black shifting shadows between them. When worn by Delrid, a Golden dragon populates the black space between the gold rings. The miniscule dragon mimics his state of mind. For a few common examples:
1) When Delrid is focused on a project or spell, the dragon appears energized, but does not break it's gaze with the task at hand. It may pace, shift positions, or lightly flap it's wings.
2) When brainstorming or contemplating multiple possibilities, the dragon frolicks around the annulus, as though playing whimsically.
3) While utilizing the Knkwledge Geography or Knowledge Nature skills, the minuscule dragon appears to be actively searching around the Annulus.
4) When in a magic-rich environment, or the Cradle or Shadow Realms, the black shadow seems to part and reveal either arcane or Dwarven circuitry behind the veil of darkness. Here the dragon seems almost afraid, as if surrounded by too much power.

Just a few examples...

Siv states the new information equates to lost ambush as Devlin regrets not killing the Duergar back in the battle for the bridge.

Braugh asks to retrieve the bodies of the scouting troupe, to which Marquin, the gnomish general, replies, "In a day and a half their muscles will be dried in the salty flats. It would be a jerky-retrieval. And the position is known and probably watched for such activity."

Tahni asks if disrupting supply routes is possible, but the supply routes locations are unknown, it would take scouting to discover.

Sam agrees that a scouting mission of higher caliber may be in order, to which BlackAxe grunts in agreement, Aye

Deldrid continues to work (i'm not sure about the ring of sustinance thing), and the very air around him crackles with magical energy.
Soon, BlackAxe joins you at the gnomish forges, and starts hammering a large piece of wicked looking blueish Iron on the fire.

Then, Jarga asks a prudent question about maps and further information on the tunnels and construction of DrakesMeade....

In the back of the temple, Tahni finds Tina looking tired and ragged from the ordeal and the surgery, Guy feeds her porridge.
When she shows them the noble's clothing, their jaws drop and tears of gratitude well in their eyes, Guy says, "Thank you so much Ms. Wyrmrider, I don't know how we can ever repay you."

When time allows, Tahni will also have a quiet word with Sam over an ale "Sam, I've been wanting to speak with you since the Trog battle. There is something you should know." Tahni takes a small sip of her drink "When I was trying to stabilise the children, the power that was fighting against me offered me a deal. All of the children's lives would be spared if I gave up my life in exchange ... and yours. I consider you a friend, Sam, so I told it that it was me or nothing to which it apparently agreed. Now, I don't know what your history is, Sam, but something out there wants you. That, and I know infernal when I hear it. Is there something you want to talk about?" The Duergar
The party encounted several duergar on entrance to the Scab. The party fought and defeated them, however the duergar had a device (think 'huge bomb') which blew up the bridge. The surviving duergar were Lila (crossbowess), Doven (cleric of Marteus), Douglass (engineer) and Humphrey (fighter). Tahni actually stabilised and saved Lila, Doven and Douglass all from dying *oops*. We took them as prisoner, and when the time was right, they turned invisible and escaped from us. Lila had a bit of a thing for Devlin. Douglass was quite the wimp - no evil was detected on him and he even apologised to Tahni before he vanished. Humphrey and Bruagh clashed, and after the escape, Bruagh vowed to act as judge/jury/executioner going forwards.

The Book
I had planned to show the book to Tally before we left. Honest!

The book was given by Tina to Tahni after her rescue.

The book is a manual for the construction of mineshafts. Detailed explanations for making elevators, proper support beams and the like. Very technical. This is the kind of book that could take a novice of engineering to create some elaborate pieces of architecture.

But the last two pages are different. They are made of a rough papyras. One page holds a crude drawing of underground mine shafts. Seemingly dark and red.

There is a scribbled handwriting on the back of that page. The language is actually a cross between dwarven and an old Infernal tongue, it says, "The forsaken come to reclaim their birthright".

In contrast to the previous low-skill level drawing, the last papyrus page holds a vastly artistic drawing Ruins

Delrid is extremely appreciative of the explanations. This is the most comprehensive description of the Duergar situation he has heard.

"It sounds as though these enemies have need of retribution for their atrocities in Riddleport. I propose we track them down, but I think Siv is very wise for recommending patience..."

At the forge, Delrid observes the Blue Steel creations of BlackAxe: "I see you are quite skilled, what is your current project?"

Sam finds his way to the forge and finds Delrid and BlackAxe hard at work.

Hey Delrid. I have the components for my belt of dwarvenkind. I really need to gain the ability to see in the dark without a torch when we infiltrate the Duergar tunnels.

Sam reaches into his pack and pulls out the components/scroll in a bag and also the wand of glitterdust.

Along with the components and scroll of tongues that you'll need for the belt, I bought you a wand of glitterdust. I figured it would be best in your hands against the Duergar to counter their invisibility. I just want you to know that I really appreciate this and am glad to see you back with the team. If you ever need help crafting anything, feel free to call on me for my song of inspire competence.

ooc-Sorry Tahni. Missed your post to me.

Sam happily sits down with Tahni. His mood changes to somber when she begins speaking. His thoughts had switched to confident and positive about his possible ties to the demons. He processes the information and responds in a thoughtful and measured fashion.

I'm not sure about my past. I have been able to speak their language and seen them in my nightmares for as long as I can remember. I have no knowledge of my past. I don't know who my family is or where I was born. I made up my name to protect myself from questions about my origins. Until that encounter, I had never spoken Abyssal in front of others. I have always feared prosecution by being linked to their kind.

Sam takes a sip of his drink and looks Tahni in the eyes for the first time during the conversation.

I am on your side. I will never betray you and the group as long as my will is my own. I don't know how I am linked to the demons or why they would want me, but I assure you...I am making it my mission to hunt down and destroy every one I find. One day I will lead a group that will aid me in this cause. Until that time, I leave my life in your hands Tahni. I trust and respect you.

"Sam, I certainly would love to create the belt of Dwarvenkind for you. It brings great pride to me, seeing another want to seek company and mimic my great race. I gladly will build anything you desire. I will start on your belt immediately, and I would love your inspiration. With your approval I will craft the belt according to my theme: Black shadowy metal with gold trim, accents, and filigree."

Delrid reviews his engineering schematics and armor design books to select a design. He recommends a sectional design matching his Amulet, using the wings and head of the gold dragon to form a clasp, and 1 inch square panels of black shadow to form the belt portion. It should only take 14-16 panels for a gnome-sized belt...

"As for the wand, it is a very wise purchase. I think it would be better served in the hands of another. I can already cast Glitterdust, but having multiple sources could be crucial. In fact, you should be able to utilize it's potential, am I correct?"

OOC: The Forged are attempting to do quite a bit of their own crafting. Obviously this lets us save a significant amount of coin, but Delrid probably has 2 weeks worth of items to make. Are we all comfortabl with laying low for 2 weeks?

If so, Delrid starts on Sams Belt ASAP! He's extremely flattered to be asked to create a Dwarven item for a non-Dwarf.

A discussion is starting in the Rules board regarding how much crafting can be achieved when wearing a ring of sustenance.

It should not affect the current gameplay, based on the following note from the ring writeup: "The ring must be worn for a full week before it begins to work."

Based on 3 days having passed so far while the party is in MountainBurrow, Tahni has spent 2 days (16hrs) on her Amulet, and 1 day (8hrs) on her Cloak, completing both.
Delrid - Can you please note how your time has been spent too? cheers!

All,

I've added a 2nd sheet to the party spreadhseet. The new sheet lists all crafting that has been done, and crafting yet to be done based on the materials everyone bought at the Catacombs.

Assuming Tahni and Delrid both work 8hrs days, and accelerating crafting as much as possible, it will take 16 non-adventuring days to complete all items.

My thoughts are that we wrap up here (day 5), and start heading towards Drakesmeade to scout it out. Assuming we take the same amount of time to get there as the scouting party did, Tahni and Delrid will have another 3 days crafting on the road.

What does everyone else think?

Hi Delrid,
Assuming we are on day 5, you have only spent 2.5 days crafting (and completing) the bag and the sheath, so you have another 2.5 days so far to spend. Also, rather than crafting the +4 Headband over 4 days in one shot, you can first craft it as a +2 (taking 1 day) to get immediate benefit, and then the remaining 3 days to upgrade it.
Also, in crafting your bag of holding you need to make a caster level check to cast the Secret Chest scroll (it's a level 5 scroll with a caster level of 9). You need to roll a 1D20+3 and beat 10, and unfortunately you can't take 10 on these checks. OR, just say you increased the DC of the bag by 5, and keep the scroll for later :)

The group spends another day crafting and resting. Braugh receives a powerful glowing axe and a new suit of armor in a neatly wrapped parcel.

As Sam states he has no knowledge of his history and he has sworn to fight against the extra-planar forces of evil, BlackAxe smiles and responds to Deldrid's inquiry, "Aye. I've heard a great deal of devil-talk from you newcomers. It would be a shame to find one and not be able to draw blood. Cold Iron, rare and powerful, I think a polearm may be desirable if were dealing with huge monstrosities."

And then he sets back to work. In a day, he has hammered out the rough shape of a guirisame. Then Tally shows up and begins chanting above the creation, he is casting Summon Monster I
A blue and green energy emanates from the metal haft as he continues hammering.

When Tahni brings the book to Tina, she uses her one working hand to flip the pages feebly before losing energy and stopping, Guy begins turning the pages for her... until she slaps her hand on a page in the center.

Tahni looks down and reads the old dwarven handwriting, entitled
Chapter 8: DrakesMeade
The pages show schematics and blue prints for each section of the fortress, starting with the very foundation.
There is a large above-ground section complete with towers, walls, courtyards, bunks, stables, portcullusi, etc, and a much much larger below-ground fortress that has everything from collapsible tunnels, an elevator, and secret treasure rooms.
The blueprints for the Forge show a thing of pure wonder: Rows of chain-mounted buckets of molten material designed to pour into a great open furnace. Hundreds of blacksmith's irons arranged around a constantly-flowing underground river for cooling.

Of course, this book was written in the Third Age, more than a 1000 years ago, so modifications to the fortress must have been made since then.

Still... there are so many secret tunnels... the Duergar couldn't have found them all, could they?

(OOC: Guys, my final exams are Monday through Weds, so please be patient. Feel free to post all you like though! There are many plans to be made, stuff to be crafted, and goodbye's to be said.)

Tahni is speechless. The plans for the very fortress they were planning an offensive for was right under her nose. "Thankyou Tina. Thankyou. Please rest now. I have to take this to the council at once." Tahni tunes out to her current surroundings and takes a moment to focus on the schematics, looking for any detail that may help (Use Oracle Gift: Focused Trance. Tahni is dazed for 1 round, but gets a +20 circumstance bonus to her next knowledge check. Knowledge Dungeoneering or Engineering: 41)

Once done, she will look for the rest of the party to advise her findings, and then look for BlackAxe and Tally. This news must be shared quickly.

-------

Later when time allows, Tahni seeks out the two gnomes - Titinia and Oburon. There is more to them than appears, and they may be able to help her find some answers. "Forgive me for disturbing you, but I wondered if you may be able to assist me. I have been experiencing visions both when I am awake and when I am asleep, and they don't make any sense to me. I know they are important, but their meaning is lost to me." Tahni will then describe her visions to the gnomes - of the Shooting star, the crumbling mountains, streams of silver turn to black tar, Axe and hammer clanging together, and the strong smell of acid. "Does any of this mean anything to you?"

-------

"Have you heard of 'the Indigo Brotherhood'?" she asks Tally, BlackAxe and RedForge. "They look to have been behind the assault on Tina Cloverdale at Riddleport. They went to quite a lot of trouble to take her baby and turn it into some kind of ... monster. I fear we may have more than one enemy here in the Scab"

-------

OOC:
The Indigo Brotherhood
Back in Riddleport, a ninja kept the party at bay while a necromancer performed some ritual on Tina before ripping the child from her womb. To quote: "But it's not a baby you would assume such a beautiful woman would have. Its skin is jet black and its eyes are crimson red. Only the head is out right now, but as its face is exposed to the air, it lets loose a terrifying wail". The ninja claimed association with something called "The Indigo Brotherhood" before fleeing. The necromancer died from a fall, the baby was gone, but next to the necromancers body could be seen small footprints leading away.

He keeps an eye out for any possibility of a hidden door to allow secret movement of an army. We Dwarve's are crafty, if I were king I'd want a way to move me army around without being seen. Devlin gets a glimmer in his eye. This is what I live for, solving problems. If there is one in the maps we can scout the outside of it, find it and report back ta Blackaxe. Than he leads the assault force ta the outside of the door, while we head in ta find and open it. Gonna need some way ta keep in touch like the whisper spell. An almost cat like grin crosses Devlin's face. Hard to defend a place from behind. We'd force em right out the front door.

OOC: I don't know how long it would take to travel to DrakesMeade. That said, I would prefer to wait until the crafting is done before we leave. We have several reasons both in and out of character to wait.

In Character Reasons:
1) Allows time for heightened awareness to calm down (Siv's Recommendation)
2) All characters will be more effective with their gear. Every character has something in queue that will make them more effective adventurers, and 3 days won't get it done.
3) I don't think we're all in agreement on force mobilization, and mobilizing a force takes time.

Out of Character Reasons:
1) Addison has finals, and we can sort all this out internally.
2) in play by post, all we say is "Time Passes" and it's that simple.
3) The Rules board seems to still be sorting out some crucial DC interpretations on accelerated crafting.

All that said, I would prefer to just wait the 2 weeks to get stuff done.

OOC: I'm assuming discussions are happening in front of the committee

"The alternative Siv is that our hand has been shown. With the scouts being dealt with, the Duergar may already be alert to our presence and seek to storm MountainBurrow. Just as Tally was able to scry on their location, it would reason that the Duergar could scry on us." Tahni pauses for a moment, as she considers past events with a grimace "Before they fled from us in Riddleport, the Duergar took some of our equipment. Now, it is significantly easier to scry on a person if you have their belongings. I fear the longer we remain in MountainBurrow, the more risk we put the refugees in. I will feel much better when we put some distance between them and us"

Tahni folds her arms and paces as she thinks aloud "If the Duergar do increase their patrols, then they start dividing their forces. If we are able to find a way in to Drakesmeade, picking off small groups of resistance would be easier than one large group. But would a group of three scouts be enough to put such a fortress in a state of higher alert?"

OOC: Going to post this on the rules board but thought I would bring it up here first. I was thinking about buying quilted armor to go under the mithral chain I have. Is doubling up on armors allowed? I know the armor bonus wont stack but I should still get the 3/- DR versus small projectiles (I am paranoid about my next meeting with Lila). If that wont work could I buy a slotless version of it and call it a lining to my chain shirt?

Zach R I was reading the Pathfinder site and it found a feat (not for use in the Wold) called layered armor. It lets you stack a Heavy armor and a light armor, and use the heavy armor statistics and gain one magic ability (not enhancement) from the armor.

It says that normal wearing two pieces of armor are not allowed.

Hope that helps.

OOC: My finals are Tuesday through Thursday so be patient with me as well. Regarding the crafting situation. It makes sense to me that we prioritize what is need before we set out, and what can be crafted on the road. Something like Sam's belt of Dwarvenkin... I call that essential. Stat boost to primary ability... probably essential. Keep in mind, we can craft on the road. It takes a bit longer, but it is possible.

Also, I figure a good RP way to fix this is to have Blackaxe, Redforge, and other NPC's help us just this one time. After all, we are doing this for them. That's up to Addison of course.

"Friends, there are some pieces of equipment we absolutely need before we set out. However, we are uncertain of how soon to set out. General Blackaxe, Captain Redforge, could we request assistance crafting our magical items, so that we might set out against our enemies sooner?"

Having been so long on the road, alone since the death of his mentor he is unused to taking the time to make a single good friend. He tries to make her laugh as often as he can; the twinkle in her eye sends fireflies fluttering around his core. His laughter dies momentarily one time and she asks him what is wrong.

Internally Jarga wrestles with himself for a moment and then explains to her that he is almost certain his brother murdered his family and that he cannot stay here for much longer.

"I owe my parents vengeance. I owe myself peace. And I owe my brother a taste of the flames he let my family burn in. I like it here Girtha, I ... like you too... but if I don't depart soon I might not have the will to leave and then my heart would never rest."

Separate topic: If Tally spends 8hrs crafting, he can make a +2 headband in 1 day. He had to beat a DC18, so 23 is fine.

On Day 5, Tahni completes her first piece of work for someone else - a belt for Siv. Though a number of ideas came to Tahni when crafting it - such as intentionally making it too small - Siv really has done nothing wrong. Chastising herself for thinking such thoughts, Tahni endevoured to craft the belt as best she could.

"One belt, as requested" she says handing over the item. It is a thick, wide, black leather belt, with an oval buckle made of silver. The leather has been polished to a shine, and the buckle looks shaped like a shield. On it can be seen some fine dwarven writing: "He who so sheds dwarf blood, by dwarf shall his blood be shed"

Lately, every time I post I feel as if I'm kicking Delrid when he's down - whick is not what I'm intending to do. At the risk of receiving a virtual headbutt though, I have to point out the following rule: "Regardless of the time needed for construction, a caster can create no more than one magic item per day."

But on the plus side, you only need to make craft checks when you complete an item - not every day :)

Delrid - 12/12/10 - CMD13 - HP 29/29
Tuesday December 6th, 2011 6:15:39 AM

No sweat. "Work on no more than one item at a time" and "Create no more than one item per day" means after finishing one item, nothing else can be done? It's funny that you can create a 250 gp item in two hours, and split creation into 4 hour blocks, but you better not start working on a new project at 8 AM. I wish I had these rules at work...

It only delays the crafting 1/2 a day, so no starting on the cloak of resistance.

-------------
Virtual Headbutt:
Tahni in character doesn't want to stay in town.
Rob out of character rules against accelerated and fractional and sustained (via ring) crafting.
I smell vendetta...
-----------

Delrid is mildly frustrated with the arguing, and doesn't agree with Tahni. The gloves are coming off... "Tahni and Bruagh, didn't you carry Mrs. Cloverdale (and other refugees and children) from Riddleport, past rampaging giants, through goblin infested mountain tunnels, over lizard folk inhabited karsts, and beyond a scorching desert? I thought you might want to check on their recoveries a little longer than 3 days... Or maybe not?"

Delrid hopes the favor he loses with those words gain him he time he needs. He sees the Annulus and the pearls as a way to double his casting power. He would prefer not to adventure again without those capabilities, but he promised Sam he would make the belt...

Tuesday December 6th, 2011 8:50:43 AM

OOC: No, no vendetta here. Or is there? *strokes white cat*
Anyway....
So when Tahni can craft Cure Light Wounds potions in 6mins, she can still only make one a day. If there was no restriction on items per day and we followed the existing math, then 2000gp of crafting per day would equal 80 potions a day. With Fast Forge that would be 160! With Cooperative Crafting - 320 (a potion every 90secs)! Lol. Yep, I think either way the rules are a bit weird/broken. Not quite sure how to write up an amendment to the rules forum for it yet though.

Perhaps in the future there will be something I want to say to you. But right now... no, we have much to prepare for and right now would not be appropriate." She turns back and continues brushing her axebeak mount. "I am certain that you have your own preparations to make, yes? Perhaps somewhere else? Not here right now?" Bruagh may notice her brushing has become very vigorous and mechanical, as though Siv were trying to preoccupy herself.

The days pass,

Tahni goes to speak with Oburon and Titinia.
A small dark tunnel in the back of Mountainburrow leads to a moss-covered door.
You feel, Welcome from the place.

You enter and see the couple sitting at a small stone table with three stone mugs of green tea.
Titinia smiles and takes your hand, you feel
Your destiny is as glorious as it is terrifying.
Our world is ever changing as time passes.
Sometimes it changes at more rapidly others.
Time flows and ebbs as mountains meet.
The unstoppable force will meet the immovable object.

Tally casts Cat's Grace on the headband he has been working on, holding it up, it has beautiful flower rosettes and he smiles, "Who wants to look gorgeous?" Tally completes the Headband of Aluring Charisma +2. Who was paying for this?

Devlin finds it quite easy to make a spring-triggered bear-trap. (Lets think: what do we want a trap to do? And how difficult would it be to put those things together. 25weeks really?)

Braugh trains with Dende, exchanging blows with practice hammers on wooden shield.
In one sparring session, you trip him. He looks up at you with extreme focus.
A white hot glow begins to emanate from him.
Hammer swings, you block (miss AC 15), boom, your shield explodes against the force.
Knowledge religion DC 15 Highlight to display spoiler: {Dende has some strange connection to the divine. Power is being channeled through him?}
He says to you, "Thank you for your guidance master Stormbringer. When you find our entrance to DrakesMeade, I'll be storming the castle with all the dwarves."

Everyone studies the Manual of Tunnel Construction, seeing that hundreds of small tunnels spread from DrakesMeade's many halls and rooms. Some of them stretch far under the Mangrove Flats, but there does not seem to be any entrances to the surface. The tunnels are at least 40feet under the ground...
----------------------------------

It is now day 7.

Three young gnomish scouts report to BlackAxe as he polishes his new guirisame.
Huey says, "Sir, a half-days ride away, hundreds of dark figures march from the SouthWest!"
Duey says, "They walk slowly, dragging their feet, and don't seem to be going in any direction in particular. Almost mindlessly."
Louey says, "And we could still see the smoke from RiddlePort's aftermath in the horizon..." sadly.

BlackAxe grunts, "I'm going to ride out for a closer look. RedForge, accompany?"

RedForge grunts and grabs his axe and addresses the heroes, "Aye, tis up to you whether you chose to join. Mounts shall be provided if necessary."

Tally smiles, "You wouldn't last long if your ambushed without me, sweetie."

OOC: "Who wants to look gorgeous?" and ""You wouldn't last long if your ambushed without me, sweetie". Is Tally an elf? :) Oh, and the Headband is Jarga's.

A hooded female dwarf enters, drawing the gazes of nearby soldiers.

She wears a pair of matte black, leather boots cut to just below her knees. The slight heel on them giving her some height. Her mottled green breeches fit snugly to her legs - spotless, not a trace of wear. She wears a shoulderless, off-white blouse underneath her brown soft-leather bodice, tied tightly at the front. On her left wrist a brown bracer with a silver inlay depicts some sort of woldian symbol. Finally, on her back - a silvery grey hooded cloak. It looks quite thin, yet light does not seem to pass through it.

Drawing back her hood, she reveals herself - Tahni. Or at least, you think it's Tahni. Her features look softer, her eyes brighter, and she doesn't appear to have any signs of battle scars. A fine mithral circlet rests on her brow.

The cleric with the clean, white cloak has been replaced. Brushing some hair behind her ears, she gives a coy smile to the soldiers before speaking with the party "I figured I was drawing too much attention to myself in combat wearing all that white. I should blend in a bit better now" She takes a moment before continuing "I'll come along for the ride. Part of me hopes they are from Riddleport, and not from any other town that may have suffered the same fate"

OOC: Hey, I had to sell this one. How many dwarves have high charisma? :)

Seems not too many Dwarven soldiers liked to ride, or maybe they didn't like horses. Regardless, it allowed me to spend quite a bit of time on horseback. I'll certainly take a mount."

Delrid feels a new confidence with his completed Annulus of Arcane Attunement. His mind feels bolstered, accelerated, and more in harmony with the world around him. He stretches his mental reach for knowledge of the area the Ducks (code for scouting party) addressed.

Knowledge Geography = 13

The minuscule golden dragon on the annulus feebly struggles to it's feet. Like a newborn foal, it ambles unpredictably. Delrid seems mildly confused as he attempts to grasp features and locations with which he is not familiar. Clouds of charcoal grey seem to drift past a black stream, bubbling over the golden circuitry of the annulus. All the motion is disjointed, and Delrid takes a seat.

"It seems this power is more difficult to harness than anticipated. Perhaps there is a steep learning curve..."

BlackAxe shakes his head when Delrid says of undead terrorizing innocents, "Skilled Delrid, you misunderstand. There are no civilized settlements in The Scab right now aside MountainBurrow. We are not riding out with the intention of destroying the horde, just to gather more information. If we can get rid of them without losses, then we shall. Must assess risks and benefits. It will take a half-day to reach and another half-day to get back. Do what you will, but I won't wait long to retake DrakesMeade when I return."

Tally, the flamboyant cleric of Flower frowns and looks distant, "There used to be a human settlement above Valley Cinderwood... but we had to abandon and flee to MountainBurrow some 20 years ago. I stayed here, everyone else went back to New Elennia."

RedForge laughs and says, "It may even be better to let a horde of mindless undead to roam the Scab, it could only do to bother the Troglodytes."

On the morning of the eighth day, BlackAxe is found suiting up in his black full plate near the large central exit.

A few gnomish children approach you with mounts as you prepare to leave.

Braugh gets to know a fine white stallion with brown mane named Sir ThunderBolt. They get along famously.

Devlin befriends Shade, a black mare with a few extra years of wisdom under her belt.

Jarga meets LaFleur, a french mare with beautiful black silky mane.

Jarga! Wait up. Girtha runs to you and gives you a large smooch on the cheek, "Good luck."

Delrid receives a slightly aging gelding named Seer, while Tahni rides a white pony named Starbright

It seems Siv has her Blue ready to go.

Sam purchases some bolts for himself and Devlin and meets Jugo, a brown thin and stringy donkey that seems jittery at best.

Oddly, BlackAxe doesn't walk with a mount to the exit.

You wave goodbye to MountainBurrow and walk down a large cobblestone tunnel for almost a mile before reaching two huge stone doors.
Four gnomish guardsmen strain their muscles and push the huge stonework doors open.

Sand, dirt, and the smell of salty air sting your face.

You hear a loud whistle, and look to see BlackAxe producing the sound.

clunk, clunk, clacklunk
A large blackbear runs from the horizon and stops next to BlackAxe, who then mounts the creature, saying, "If you want a special mount to ride upon, then you must befriend one."

He rears up on the Ursine mount, who roars with pride, and they take off to the SouthEast, RedForge and Tally race after him on their horses.

In the horizon, you can still see the large smokesignals of RiddlePort's destruction.

Jarga feels something in his pocket he doesn't recognize. He pulls it out and its an oaken wand... Girtha must have slipped it there during the good-bye embrace.

Everyone please make a DC 14 Ride or Handle Animal check to force-march these mounts, as the air is dry and the sun is hot.

The group of heroes and soldiers ride through the salty sandy wind towards the smoke of RiddlePort to the east.

The terrain changes from the sand to volcanic ash at the 8th hour of your ride.

Your faces and lips are chapped and riding saddles bruised.

LaFleur, Jarga's mount starts to buck and huff as she sputters to a light trot. This mare is quite proud and will not budge.

Just as well though, it may be time to make camp anyways.
A fire is ignited and black iron pots are filled with water, potatoes, carrots and the like.

Tahni inspects Jarga's gift and finds that it contains powerful transmutation magic and has the power to cast Shifting Sand 20 times. The wand seems very old and worn, as if used in the past.

BlackAxe returns from patroling the area and dismounts the large black bear, he speaks to him, "Thank you for your help Ursie, lets eat."

RedForge sharpens his axe and speaks,
"A tale was once told about a young flute playing dwarf who was laughed at as a fool in an ancient kingdom.
Luckily for the lad, the King's daughter loved him dearly.
When the courtship was inevitably discovered, the boy was thrown into a deep dungeon, with nothing but his flute.
He played to the very stones every day for three years as he was kept prisoner.
As his tunes resonated through the darkness, one day his meal did not come.
The next day, no food. He panicked, but kept playing his flute
He began to starve to death.
And his flute playing fell lower and lower....

RedForge looks somber and then looks at the great Fhorge mountain in the far horizon.

The Fhorge is a mountain that dwarfs all others. It must be several kilometers high, but there is no way to tell because the clouds cover most of it.

RedForge says, "Their used to be great dwarven halls in the Fhorge. But the flute playing dwarf starved to death because everyone in the kingdom was killed. No one knows what happened. Now, we hear his flute ever so lightly on the wind from The Fhorge."

Delrid's hammer is heard tinkering on another work and Devlin takes first watch...

"Warriors, I propose we initiate our kiting plan with a few mounted warriors. That way, if support is necessary the remainder can function as reserves, but we are not thrown headlong into immediate combat."

"Siv, Bruagh, and RedForge seem to have the best relationships with their mounts. I propose they move to visual range with the throng, and attempt to lead them in a direction. Should things go poorly, simply cry for assistance and the rest of us shall support. Should things go well, we can lead the zombies directly to DrakesMeade and let two wrongs give us our right."

You awaken and ride to the SouthWest again.
Devlin takes point and remembers that DrakesMeade is far to the East of MountainBurrow, almost opposite the direction you are heading

Sam apologizes to his donkey, at which the steed replies, "I've carried a few riders worse than you, just ease up on the bridle and make me some oatmeal waffles in the morning."

When the Bard turns to the rest of the pack, he receives a number of grunts and head-nods.
You hear Delrid's mount mutter something like ,"A ring of sustenance solves the eating problem for crafting, but is it really necessary to cut out baths too?"

Braugh and Tahni contemplate using the undead as a diversion against the Duergar.

Note that you are now a day's ride to the West of MountainBurrow. DrakesMeade is a three-day ride East of MountainBurrow.

When you all ride closer, the sheer number of roaming, stumbling, stinking, walking corpses is astounding. The Horde expands to the horizon to the West towards RiddlePort.

They walk in random directions, but together away from RiddlePort. You see a small group notice a burrowing mammal and they all dive for it, digging into the ashy earth frantically.

A few towards the front notice you and lock their bloodshot eyes on you. Uuuuuuuuggghhhnnn
Groan as they lift arm and start hobbling in your direction.

Devlin looks around for a choke point nearby and sees a rocky outcropping a bit to the north that may suffice. Though the downside of that tactic would be possibly boxing yourselves in.

BlackAxe looks over the situation and grunts to Tally, "What would happen if we left them here?"

Tally responds, "They would wonder mindlessly until a necromantic force finds and directs them... or the carrion will have a buffet."
The tall cleric of Flower looks to the sky and you can see several buzzards circling above. One dives down and grabs a disembodied arm before flying back to the sky.

RedForge looks at Braugh, "Must be thousands of them. This might be more trouble than its worth. Your thoughts?

chop
zombie head rolls to the ground, you see BlackAxe riding back to you from the Horde, a bit of gore on his axe, he says, "Fragile critters."

Thousands, Bruagh mouths. He waits a moments thinking of what to do.

"As long as we don't let them surround us, we could possibly kill them all, if we had to. I'm afraid though, what happens if we don't kill them fast enough. If there are still a couple hundred when we become to fatigued to carry on. That said, I don't know that we can just leave them here. There are certainly necromancers around here. We've already encountered one." We need to find a place where just a few of us can hold them off, so that if things get bad we can at least rest a few hours before being forced back into the fray."

Bruagh looks to his friends, his family and ask their opinion.

"We are all in this together. What do you guys think?"

Devlin -- 20/15/15 -- CMD 17 -- HP 28/28
Friday December 16th, 2011 10:07:29 PM

Devlin surveys the scene with a worried look on his face. With our numbers even at a choke point or easily defensible area I don't think we could hold this sea of undead. I appreciate your confidence for our party Bruagh but we escaped the last horde by the seat of our pants. I like the idea of leading this mob towards the darkbloods, it would take some planing and timing but we might be able to pull it off.

The Dwarf adjusts his goggles and scans the surroundings more closely. Blackaxe you know this area better than the rest of us. Is there somewhere close we can lead the zeds, a cliff, boiling water, lava? Something we could try and get them to walk into or off of??

Tahni -- AC21/15/17 -- CMD 10 -- HP 35/35 -- SR8 -- Rob C
Saturday December 17th, 2011 12:55:26 AM

Tahni stays seated atop Starbirght and surveys the landscape, her face emotionless "That many undead. Gargul will not be happy."

She then considers what options may be available to the party. "So we can't leave them to wander mindlessly, and we can't assault them directly. If we do try and lure them to Drakesmeade, it would be a slow relentless treck, and we may find ourselves caught in between them and the Duergar. That, and we would have to be careful to guide them around Mountainburrow, rather than straight to it." Tahni pauses for a moment as something occurs to her "If we assume we did nothing and let the undead make their own journey. If the Duergar notice them and send out a scouting party of their own, then MountainBurrow would be right in line with the scouts journey. These undead may indirectly lead the Duergar to the front door of MountainBurrow. We should either try and find a way to end them before they get too far, or find a way to alter their course. They cannot be left unattended."

Tahni is again forced to consider military options and thinks aloud to the party, RedForge and BlackAxe"Ranged attacks, perhaps? Shoot and run. It would be tiring and time consuming however. I'm not sure if Mountainburrow has any siege weapons, however using them would likely attract unwanted attention from the Duergar. We have encountered a stone giant herd, as well as suspect the existence of a goblin tribe nearby. Are there any sizeable forces nearby, friend or foe, that we might either call on for aid or direct the undead towards? Perhaps Tally and I could consecrate the earth between here and Mountainburrow? That may be enough to alter their path?

Sam -- 18/15/14 -- CMD 13 -- HP 23/23  d20+7=9 ;
Saturday December 17th, 2011 11:29:44 PM

(prior to serious undead horde talk)-Sam laughs at Delrid's mount's comment. I'll try to throw him a subtle hint.
------------------------------------------------

Sam listens to the ideas of the group and analyzes the information.

I have a feeling that this undead mob might be the work of the Duergar. They might have been scouting out this area to send the mob to us. I am not excited about trying to direct the undead to them by making us the bait. If they are being controlled by the Duergar, they could possibly redirect them back at us. If we leave the mob to their own devices, they will surely find their way to Mountainburrow. In my opinion, the Duergar are the least of our problems. We need to find a way to wipe the mob out. I'm with Devlin. If we can lure them to some natural trap, that would be the easiest way to wipe them out.

Sam reaches into his pack and pulls out the jeweled scepter. I could use this for the bait. It will allow my voice to travel far enough to draw their attention to whatever trap we find.

It seems that vectoring the horde is impractical, and destruction our best solution.

"Another complication for launching undead at the Duergar is control. If DrakesMeade has enough evil casters, who's to say we wouldn't be providing them resources?

If we can find a specific location (a plateau or peak) from which to fight, I propose the following:
-- Encircle that spot with warriors
-- Keep the casters in the center of the circle
-- Cast an extended Rope Trick in the center of the circle
-- Any fallen or wounded can find respite in the Rope Trick
-- If we all need to recuperate, the undead will likely continue shambling while we rest!

The selected spot would need to be well chosen, but some plan beats no plan. Also if the spot could minimize access, via arroyo or soft earth, that would be optimal!"

Fight smart 'n' safe... Nothing that gets us surrounded. Nothing that gets us trapped. No offense Delrid but if you're keen to let yourself get surrounded on a mountain top then you can count me out.

If no one here knows of any holes, firey pits or ravines in which to drop these things into then I suggest we scout some more.

Failing that perhaps a two party approach? We split into two groups. One group fights using spells and bows and arrows and rocks and anything else that keeps them at a distance, whilst moving backwards. Meanwhile the other group rests somewhere out of sight. We swap when we need to. "

"So let me get this straight. I can barely ride, can't really cast spells from horse back and we just attracted the attention of a billion groaning, nashing undead? "

Jarga makes a deep, growl in his chest. Embers flicker dangerously in his eyes.

"To. The. Lava. Then? " he bites out angrily.

To Delrid he responds "Your rope idea is looking better all the time".

Braugh plunges in and slices the head off a sturdy dwarven blacksmith zombie, his holy axe evaporates the corpse into sparkling dust...

And twelve more zombies rush at him and BlackAxe (missing ACs 11, 17, 18, 17, 13, 16, 7, 6, 9, 5, HIT 20 for 2 damage!)

Claws and teeth gnash at the armored Dwarves armor and shields.
Sir Thunderbolt rears in protest and begins to panic, Braugh DC 14 Ride or Handle animal check to prevent Sir Thunderbolt from using his action to fight instead of whatever you want.... otherwise he kicks his hooves to smash two zombie heads (Hit AC 18 and 13 for 9 and 7 damage))

They quickly begin to encircle. BlackAxe slashes one to bits (AC 15 for 12 dmg) to open a hole, "C'mon, lets pull out of here!"

Then Tally rushes forward and emits a burst of holy energy from a crystal rose (15 holy damage)
The Zombies all obliterate into the same dusty sparkles.

20... 30... 40 more shambling, stumbling corpses are are 30 feet away from the melee combatants.

BlackAxe withdraws 60feet as does Tally.

RedForge throws a flask of lamp oil in front of the oncoming Zeds and smiles to Jarga

Siv sighs as she watches the boys charge headlong into possible death. She clucks her tongue. "So are we actually going to try to fight them when we could possibly use them for some other purpose? Anyone?" She readies her lance, but waits for the group to comment.

The flask sails through the air towards the enemy.

"Fine"

Raising his hand and hardening his voice he shouts "Igneae Sagittae!"

A ball of flame whips from his hand and strikes the flask just before it hits the ground. The flask shatters, ignites and sprays forward towards them with a flaring whoosh.

A second ball of flame shoots through the rising flames and thuds into a zombie, crackling and spitting with heat.

Gripping on steadily Jarga directs his horse away from the inferno and maintains a safe distance.

Tahni carefully and deliberately draws her wand of Protection from Evil. Ever since the parties last encounter, taking items from her pack just takes that little bit longer.

Bruagh attempts to calm Sir Thunderbolt but seeing that will not work while he is being attack, he resorts to using his knees and spurs to urge the fearful horse back out of the horde. Bruagh knows his only real chance at surviving is by staying near Blackaxe and his Ursine Mount. Bruagh slices at the nearest undead on his way out of the horde. "What in the name of Domi are you doing General? I'll fight at your side to the end, but I'll not needlessly endanger my friends! You damn near left me in there!."

Bruagh's anger is readily and uncharacteristically evident. Tahni having known Bruagh longer than anyone will realize this is the first time she has ever heard him curse.

Tally's burst created quite a hole in the enemy forces, allowing for Braugh to retreat, slashing a zombie's head off as he gallops after BlackAxe, who replies jovially, "Ample time for withdrawal. And look, they're following us now! Aha!

Jarga sends two fiery orbs, turning the oil flask into napalm that douses a group approaching from the west. They groan and walk several steps as the flames slowly engulf their bodies. (4 damage this round and another d6 next). The second missile plugs an approaching grey skinned elf in the head, leaving a singed hole where the brain was.

It looks at her and groans, it grabs her arm! (Miss CMD9) Did your lance go right through already dead tissue?
It might take a strength check to rip this thing off your lance so you can wield it properly. ..

With the power of Sam's voice, Devlin shoots down a mostly rotting bone-exposed gast.

Some Zombies are certainly faster than others, because several charge quickly after Braugh, Siv and BlackAxe. The young Cavalier gets caught by two clawing at Blue as she struggles with the corpse lodged on her weapon. (Miss AC 4 and 3).

More are charging in to attack Siv, but RedForge intercepts on his brown mount, slicing twice with his Greataxe Hit AC 14, NAT 1 as well!
RedForge's blade cleaves the zed transversely and the gorey blade lodges into the earth. 'HAHA! Were a pair to be slain soon eh?"

Devlin sees that to the north the land gets volcanic and rocky. Visible vents of steam and methane can be seen. Streams of lava may be easier to navigate for completely cognizant living rather than the stumbling and bumbling undead?

Tally shouts to you, "If it gets bad, run to me and I'll release a burst straight from Flower's garden!"

Delrid positions Seer to centralize the fight 5 squares East and 16 squares North of his current position. This should allow the fighters to seal off both the East and West sides of the lava pool due North. Also, the center channel of floes could provide an escape route. Delrid will move there, and cast Enlarge person on any of the warriors that want it. Once buffed, he'll cast an extended Rope trick in the center floe channel.

"Let's draw our foes to the North side of this lake of fire. Let them choose the cold steel of Dwarven blades or the flaming death of lava. One way or the other, we need to destroy them all!"
