DM Ken: Taking some time
Monday October 21st, 2019 8:10:44 PM

Things have been ...hectic... for the crew of the Lionfish. Saving literally millions of people across a splaying multiverse isn't an easy task, ever, but not only did they succeed, they did so admirably.

With their latest adventure closed up and in the books, only one wrinkle remained, and that was Tinker. No one could really tell the Sea Dragons what he was up to now, and who knew if they would ever find out?

The heroes now shift their focus and their attentions to home. After an adventure, there's always a number of things to work out. Treasure, sale of surplus magic items, upgrading of gear, time spent with chosen organisations or professions, and as Rill recalls, establishing a home base for their dragon group.

Rill decides the way to start is checking in with the Temple of Rest. A few crews got into tussles, there's an invasive fish species that people are getting tired of catching, and some thinks they saw a zombie or two piloting a ghostly rowboat somewhere nondescript. All in all, nothing to catch his attention.

Aexana wants to catch up on some crafting with Leafy, and she's going to have plenty of time in the forest for that and more, if she pleases.

For most of the Sea Dragons, there is little going on now. Sure their reputation is spreading, and a few folks chuckle kindly in passing about bothering the "Great and Powerful Sea Dragons!", but all in all, life is normal.

-------------

OOC: Please take a post or two to catch your character up with the WLA, leveling up if needed, buying and selling, all that good stuff! We will get into your next scripted bit soon enough, so feel free to enjoy some downtime with your characters!

With nothing much else to do at the moment, Terser heads to the tavern. He asks the brewer some questions and looks into what supplies he would need to make some Dragon Brew in his eventual brewery in the stronghold.

All day long Aex does not show up in town... nor that night... assuming she's sleeping somewhere in the forest in some animal shape most likely... dreaming of past adventures and wondering what is out there still... longing for her little shop back in Plateau City where her daughter still is... when all her work is done here she'll retire there and hope for her daughter to give her some grand children...

Bralin agrees with Rill about the fortress.
"We are the Sea Dragons. Should our base not be on the sea? Mayhap at the mouth of the harbor?"

In the meantime, the dwarf continues to find himself drawn to the stone. He spends his free time watching the local stonemasons go about their work, and getting involved when and where he can.

Rill will head to the Catacombs.

As she had been wanting to join a dragon party for a long time Fang had put in a lot of thought as to how to design a fortress. She tracks down the captain of the ship, who knows the group and the town far better than herself, and starts quizzing them. "I'd like to work out a few suggestions for our fortress for the others, can you help? We need a place that's both dependable and public. Symbolic, but practical. As dragons it's out duty to been seen to watch over the people, but we'll have enemies that will happily sneak, break, or charge into our fortress. It'll have to be somewhere on the water so our ship can be protected by it - a fortress does no good if our mode of transportation is vulnerable. What jumps out immediately in your mind? I brought a map, lets mark a few options to bring up to the others..."

Terser finds his way to the tavern for drinks and quiet reflection. He asks the brewer about supplies needed to make his own beer. The tavern owner isn't particularly certain.

"Sorry Terser, but we don't brew our own ales or spirits here. Everything is bought from the ships coming in. Im sure if you asked around though, your sure to find a sea dog somewhere who knows a bit more than the average deckhand about grog and brewing?"

Aexana continues to spend her time away from the others and in peaceful solitude. She reflects a little on her desire for a grandbaby. She must have fond memories of Plateau City and the nearby Monster Preserve, to already be thinking that far ahead.

Bralin and Fang both consider different plans for fortress building. One of them considers a coastal mooring or lighthouse type fixture, and the other considers somehow creating a mobile, floating fortress.

Bralins search takes him to observe what small bit of stone masonry exists here. Being mostly a naval port and town, most of the stone work is aimed at both private housing, or decorative carvings. As he watches, one man running a stall takes note of his curiosity.

"Well, don't that beat all. It's not often a dwarf will watch a human work stone instead of tellin' 'im he's doin' it all wrong."

The man has been making small charms, chiseled from soft sandstone he's had delivered. They are mostly religious symbols, custom heraldry, and a few other easily sold knick-knacks. He hands Bralin a small fist sized lump of sand stone and some tools.

"If you know how, take a spin at it!" (Bralin, please give me a relevant craft check for something that could be made of stone.)

Rill figures out lootshares, and decides its time to make off to the catacombs.

Fang, meanwhile, focuses on the fortress alone. Her DM can't quite respond here, because he isn't sure if an NPC or a player is the captain of the Lionfish. He will amend this bit in a little bit. ;)

Tahni spends a few hours by herself, meditating and trying to process all that has happened. Meeting Maab will be something she will remember for years to come. Quite the honor.

When she's cleaned up she joins Terser in his search for an ale recipe. If she knows the recipe and ingredients he uses perhaps she will be all the better placed to treat those that over-indulge?

Terser tends towards ingredients that remind him of home, but he also wants something that the whole crew would enjoy. And certainly at least Captain Jozhur has a refined palette. Things certainly tasted a bit different when he was inhabiting the Captain's body.

Something light and summery. Not too hoppy. Hints of citrus in the first try at least.

Jozhur (Brock)
Wednesday October 23rd, 2019 6:34:45 PM

Jozhur spends some time at the WLA, furthering his martial training.

He likes the idea of some fortification at the mouth of the harbor, controlling the main entry point to Bonetown.

Jozhur is also sure to give Terser his advice on what to brew, and reminds Terser he is no longer Captain. "Yes, not really my preference, but an "island ale" with citrus, or maybe banana, would be good. Or even coconut, that would be...different. Ooh, age a dark ale or porter in a rum barrel, that should be a hit here."

Bralin nods to the fellow, and takes the sandstone.

Reaching into his pack, he retrieves his own set of well-worn, masterwork, stone working tools.

Finding a convenient seat, the dwarf works the rock with a steady scraping and clinking.

Soon enough, he has a decent replica of a sailing vessel roughly shaped.

"Not my best," Bralin admits. "I am out of practice".

He holds a hand out to the man.

Tahni finally rouses herself from post adventure stupor. First there's meditation, then there's medication. Of course, part of the fun in finding out what makes a hangover hurt, is earning it in the first place.

Terser and Jozhur decide that a summery, island brew, with citrus is probably the best approach. Should Terser decide to pursue the secrets of making such a thing, some time spent asking around alehouses, gardens, and sailors might be the best approach.

Jozhur also reminds Terser he is no longer captain. His DM is unsure what that is all about. Perhaps the ADM could enlighten him?

Bralin gets to work, and shows the kind merchant his skills. While Bralin was trying to be humble, his work completely outclasses that of the human.

"Bwa ha!" His laugh is loud, abrasive, and genuine. "Tis what I get for tauntin' a dwarf over stonecraft. It's a nice piece Bralin. Much better than what I got."

The man thinks for a minute and rubs his beard stubble.

"Tell ya what. You bring me one of these a week, my materials, and I'll learn ya good on how to run a good business. We are in the right spot for it. You won't sell lots here in Bonetown, but by shipping lanes you are connected to pretty much the whole wide Wold."

(If you are interested, I would be happy to use the Woldian alternate rules for running a business. They've asked for more people to test those rules anyhow. Send me an email if you'd like, or turn the old man down. He won't be offended!"

Aexana finally returns from her rest, and finds it odd there's no demons, no threats, and no catastrophes anywhere in spitting distance. It's good to relax!

With Terser seemingly in good hands, Tahni makes her way back to the house. She stops via a few stores along the way though, picking up a few different meats and some vegetables.

Once back at the house she sets to cooking up a meal for the party and the brothers. Something simple. A casserole perhaps? Yes. A beef and vegetable casserole with potatoes.

The chopping is pretty easy as is finding a suitable pot to cook it in. After about an hour of letting it cook she decides to give it a sample taste. It doesn't turn out as well as expected though. "Waaay too much salt" she notes to herself. (Untrained Profession(Cook): 9)

Tahni looks about the kitchen to make sure she isn't being watched and casts a Prestidigitation spell to actually make it taste quite good. Hey, it's not cheating to cast a spell when you're a caster! That's her justification anyway.

Now satisfied with the taste she prepares a few plates and let's the party know via the rings that dinner is ready.

Fang, Terser, Jozhur, and Bralin return home to the rich smells of meat and vegetables after wrapping up their respective business. Tahni is just setting out the food, seasoned to magical perfection.

The night is nice, and sometimes, its good to remember what the world is like when you aren't up to your necks in monster guts, forces of evil, and pressure from a pantheon. Or a Pantheon. The night turns old, and then the morning is young.

-----------------------------

Its still early in the morning, and a lazy fog rolls over the low tide outside. The fog is strong, and deep. It masks the bottom of the wooden piers, casting the illusion of pier-stilts that reach endlessly down to an impossibly far away ocean floor.

There is an excited knock on the door of the Portside house, and an eager voice calls in through the door.

“Hello? Hello!? I’m here for my appointment with the Sea Dragons! I’m just a little early, but .. oh bother.. this wind just won't ... OH NO!”

Rill is very interested in what Fang proposes for a fortress, and will go over what she is thinking. But mostly because he appreciates Fang taking the initiative on this.

Rill is much more at home aboard a ship and seeing the rest of the Wold. While he appreciates the symbol of a Dragon Consortium fortress, he has little interest staying there much.

----------------------
As for the morning visitor, particularly one that mentions an appointment we never made, Rill is cautious. Perhaps, Brother Engev or Brother Lansel made an appointment, this this person is mistaken. Still, Rill will use his Sense Outsider and Sense Construct abilities, and once Tahni opens the door, he uses Deathwatch to see make sure they are, well, actually alive.

The door opens to a somewhat chaotic scene. A young half-elf scoots about, bent over, trying to pick up dozens of spilled rectanges of card stock. He places them into a small metal box. "Well, isn't this just perfect," he says to himself before he realizes the door's been open. He freezes, eyes wide as they meet yours. A small bit of seagull droppings are smattered on the lenses of a pair of thin, wire spectacles. No doubt this is the reason he dropped the card stock in the first place. He hastily removes them and tucks them into an interior pocket on his jacket. Gross...

"Th-th-th-thank you for answering, Miss Wyrmrider. I’m uh, Parnell Ragsby! I’m ahem, here for our .. interview? That we definitely have scheduled for today. I think?"

Rill's paranoia rises. If Parnell is a threat, he's an astoundingly cleverly disguised one. Rill introduces himself. Parnell's eyes shine when he starts to talk, but the confused look returns when Rill asks who he spoke with. Rill's various senses fail to detect anything outsiderish or constructed about him, and he's in fine health.

"Begging your pardon, sir Rill, and it is wonderful to finally make your acquaintance, sir." He winces a tiny bit when he realizes he's about to start rambling. "I haven't actually spoken to any of you, but you and I coressponded via letter setting this up." His card stock returned and the box they were in closed, he places them down and feels around in his coat until he finds a rolled up scroll, wax seal already broken. He unrolls it and quickly reads over. "Yes, yes I'm quite sure our appointment was for today.

"Understandable you may not remember, what with your busy schedule. If it's not a good time I completely understand if you need me to return at a later date." He says this, but the poor guy's obviously desperate to keep his appointment with you.

Rill relaxes a bit with the man. He looks at the seal and at the "Black Lion" signet ring he and some of the others wear. Same design. Rill was careful to not hand these out to any but those in our party. And he trusts the maker here in town.

Judging from the surprise of everyone at this person's arrival, Rill says, "This is indeed out seal. So, either one of us is sending messages in their sleep, or someone is impersonating us. Let's at least see what we said."

Rill will first cast Detect Magic on the scroll, and if it is magic he will not read it until we determine the nature of the enchantment. Assuming it is in fact not magical, he will open it to see what is says.

Rill relaxes and asks to see the letter. Parnell eagerly hands it over.

Terser wonders if they agreed to something while toasty at their official dragon party. Bralin agrees it's a possibility, but holds off on taking further action.

Tahni invites the man in. Parnell's eyes positively twinkle. "Oh thank you, miss Wyrmrider! You have my word I'll do you and yours proud!" Parnell makes his way in doors and finds an empty seat. "Will this do?" He looks around. "I'll also require a surface to draw on, of course. A small table, perhaps? I'm not picky!"

Fang gets suspicious when she realizes Parnell was not expected.

Aexana senses nothing shifty about Parnell and inspects his belongings. He's already opened the small bag he came with, showing several pieces of charcoal and graphite. The box he carries just contains card stock.

Rill's first action is to cast detect magic on the scroll, and boy howdy does it radiate some strong illusion magic. It's obviously divine in nature. Though he avoids reading anything, he can't help but notice the penmanship on the scroll matches his exactly.

Tahni wonders what it is Parnell is going to draw. Portraits? Probably portraits.

The confused look returns to Parnell's face, but is quickly replaced with a look of sudden understanding. "I think I see what's happened here," he says as he smiles at Rill. "Perhaps Master Rill meant this as a surprise for the rest of you."

With that, he stands and bows deep. "I am Parnell Ragsby, writer of tales, lifelong follower of the exploits of the Dragon Consortium, and proprietor of the official WoldCo Dragon Consortium Trading Card company. With Master Rill's permission, I am here to chronicle the stories of your rise to prominence, and capture your likenesses for our collectibles."

Master Rill did no such thing, of course. At least not that he recalls.

Fang keeps her hand on her axe. Not friendly, but it's a dangerous world out there. Bralin and Jozhur silently keep vigil as well.

Rill takes in Parnell's announcement, checking him out for enchantments of some kind. He's completely magic free.

The scroll doesn't register as a specific spell, but some divine entity has obviously messed around with it. He still avoids reading it, but can't help but notice something's up. The longer he looks at the script, the stranger it seems. After a bit, the words seem to buzz about the page, and wriggle excitedly under his gaze. Rill is aware, quite suddenly, that while the words are shaking and shimmying faster and faster, the world around them moves slower and slower. Tahni appears to be noticing the same as she peeks.

Finally, after much contorting and shifting, the letters on the page literally fly into the air, and then rearrange themselves on paper.

“Hey Heroes!

You all did a really great job shaking me loose from Pantheon! I mean, not that he’s a BAD boss, but he ain’t MY boss, ya know? Anyways, this Parnell guy has got a good heart, and he loves himself some adventurers! He’s been following the consortium heroes for most of his half-elven life. I figured it would be good for all parties involved for you all to meet, and for your good name to get out there a bit more. You can’t let those cocky Iron Dragons get all the new fans, now can ya?”

That Gimp. What a kidder. Just like that, time snaps back to normal.

If Parnell notices Aexana's plant approaching, he doesn't give any indication.

"So!" starts Parnell. "Let's get started!"

Tahni congratulates herself on her correct hunch before making sure Terser is portrait-ready. Terser thinks a good re-braiding of his beard is in order.

Parnell thinks this is a good idea. "Oh, absolutely sir! My collectibles are very popular. These images will travel the entire Wold, so be sure to look your best! I have as much time as you need to prepare, so by all means do whatever sprucing up you'd like."

Bralin's aura calms down a bit, though you wouldn't know to look at him. He keeps waiting.

Fang still isn't sure.

OOC: Only Rill and Tahni mentioned they were looking at the scroll. You all being in telepathic communication, it's reasonable to assume they'd have shared with you.

Rill is happy to cooperate. What's the worst that could happen?

Jozhur, on the other hand, is not. He slinks off into the shadows. Parnell has an artist's eye, but it's not keen enough to notice there's one less Dragon in the room. Jozhur notices time slow, then slow some more, then stop. He hears a familiar chuckle before he feels Gimp's weight on his left shoulder. The imp lies on its side, head propped up on one hand. "I know, right? Your whole life you get by on being unseen, then suddenly the whole world thinks they get a part of ya." Gimp sits up, stretching his arms over his tiny head and dangling his feet over Jozhur's shoulder. "Still, kinda goes with the whole Dragon Consortium territory, ya know? You do realize what ya got yourself into, don't ya? People know you, buddy." He suddenly hops up, then puts his hand on Jozhur's cheek and leans casually, other hand out-splayed for dramatic effect. "Welcome to Bonetown, home of the Legendary Sea Dragons! Kids are gonna play with little toys made in your likeness. You're gonna inspire a lot of people, Jozhur, and people need that inspiration." He shrugs. "Maybe Parnell here can work with keeping your face unseen, though. Might be he can draw you in a hooded cloak?"

Gimp floats into the air before he disappears with the parting words, "but maybe you're overestimating how unknown your face is, dude." His smile lingers in the air a few seconds after the rest of him fades away. Time pops back into motion, no one else the wiser anything just happened.

Parnell pulls out a piece of parchment for each member of the party. With impeccable penmanship, he begins writing. He begins with a simple request.

“Alright! First, if I could have each of you state your full name, along with any nicknames or official titles you might be fond of. Also let me know if you are in any Woldian Organizations!” He thinks for a moment, then adds. “Please be sure the nicknames are child appropriate, as they spread them the most. We wouldn’t want anything unsavory coming from the interview, now would we?”

He skips a line, then starts writing again.

“Then, if you could please tell me where you were born, and if you have any strong memories of that place. It’s okay if they aren’t happy ones. You’d be surprised how many adventurers seem to have dark and catastrophic pasts!”

But I would say my greatest achievement has been acceptance into the Black Lions, and having been privileged to join them on the journey that has brought us all to this point in our lives. "The Scab will always be in my heart. Is was the source of many, many painful events" Tahni self-consciously tugs the sleeves of her shirt lower to conceal some visible scars "but also some of the happiest times of my life"

Our heroes speak up, some more eloquently than others. Parnell never once interrupts, but any silence is filled with questions he uses to flesh out the details. He's done these interviews before, and it shows. He's careful not to prod those who obviously aren't comfortable with the whole affair, but spends some time lingering with Fang when she seems excited to participate.

When it's done, he has seven pieces of paper in front of him, though one is blank. Parnell frowns a bit when the introductions stop, then looks around. "Are we missing one? Jozhur, right? Did he have other appointments this morning? Be a shame not to get the whole set finished in one sitting."

He recovers, and his graciousness returns. "Well, hopefully he'll be along shortly. Let's continue. Let't see..." He pulls out a list and scratches off two lines. We mounted a rescue mission, and followed them into the hole, only to find ourselves transported to a strange land."

The dwarf pauses, thinking of something new.

"I confess, finding myself suddenly transported to a strange land is a remarkably common occurrence.

Regardless, we found ourselves in the land of Koshe Marr. An evil place, ruled by a undead queen and plagued with all manner of foul creatures. The teacher's body we found, torn in two. The children we found unharmed, but lost, and then in the thrall of a vampire.

Jozhur accepts his fate and steps forward. Parnell's face beams with delight and he quickly starts writing on the last sheet of paper.

Stories are told. They're told of battling Billoopl, of tragedy in Koshe Marr. They're told of Fae Skiemir and colorful plagues. Parnell captures them all, or at least the short versions. He's likely planing on...embellishing them for narrative's sake before they're published. "Your group's membership seems rather tumultuous, especially for a Dragon Consortium group. Most previous groups I've interviewed started adventuring together as neophytes." He chews his pencil a bit. "I can use that. Sort of a 'The Sea Dragons are the peoples' Dragon Group' thing." He makes little air quotes as he talks. "Yes, this will do nicely."

He grabs a piece of paper from the stack and draws out a rough sketch of the seven of you, surrounded by what you assume to be an adoring public. He frowns, balls up the paper, and tosses it back in his bag. He grabs another sheet, draws the seven of you again, then draws in the public sharing drinks with you in a tavern. He smiles and nods approvingly, then adds the drawing to the collected works already placed on the table.

Fang asks about production times. "Well, I have a device that will allow me to produce copies of our trading cards here today. I'll be leaving a full set with you when I leave. Even if you're not collectors, they'll be worth serious coin in a few years. The figurines take some time, but rest assured a full set will be made available to you each at no cost."

Parnell takes just a moment to finish writing up the stories presented. "This is always my favorite part of these meetings," he continues. "Would that I had time to sit and fully pick your brains regarding the specifics of your adventures, but I understand the value of not overstaying my welcome. Let's move along, shall we?

I also have some quills from a few of the Bandersnatches we've slain. And a feather from a JubJub bird."

Rill will do his best to describe the Ja’Kollu Iss’Wyrm we slew:
An immense white worm with a single circular eye in the center of its head. Wisps of icy fog waft up from between its mandibles.

Then he will help describe Billoopl:
A massive beast, an underwater giant. He is a god, and not only in his own mind. His is powerful beyond your imagination and defeating him is a task only for those who are truly prepared to die. He is vaguely human-shaped with a torso and head but at least fourteen feet tall. Instead of arms, he has absolutely massive lobster claws that hold a trident that is over twelve feet long! Instead of legs, he has the tentacles of an octopus that sway and move as he floats in the water just above the bottom of the sea.

Jozhur smiles, "The People's Dragons, I like it". He also approves of the tavern drawing, very fitting.

With the fight against Biloopl already spoken for, Jozhur recounts their slaying of a sea serpent that was terrorizing the middle seas. "It swallowed Bralin, but he hacked his way out through its throat. And then, after we had slain the thing, Rill preserved it and we stuffed it into the 'Fish's cargo hold! We had to break up the cargo hatch area to fit the serpent through."

"In my time in Floating City, we once journeyed into the Crying Wood to recover an artifact. There, we encountered an ancient guardian, some kind of wood golem. It had spears for arms, and a tail of three barbed clubs. It had some kind of invisibility as well, for it seemingly attacked from thin air."

That purple worm in the Scab was a nasty piece of work, as was the magma elemental. Those duergar were as well, but - evil as they might have been - would fall into the humanoid category. The most dangerous foe though was one of the more recent.

"The colossus that we fought in Fae Skiemir was pretty tough. It was very well armored and our spells couldn't get past it's anti-magic field. Still... we prevailed"

DM Carl - Were we expecting visitors?

Terser discusses the first wyvern he killed, and mentions he has some saved parts of wondrous creatures.

"I know people who would pay top dollar for those," Parnell states without looking up from his writing. "Or, if you don't have need of additional wealth, oftentimes such items are donated to charity auctions and the like. Of course, no one would blame you for wanting to hold on to them either."

As Rill describes some of the Sea Dragons' deadlier foes, Parnell quickly produces his drawing instruments and starts sketching. He motions Rill over to check his work as he draws. The speed and quality of the man's artwork is impressive, as is his ability for creating dramatic scenes. When he's finished, the party finds the likenesses he's captured are quite accurate. He's careful to make sure he gets "Ja'Kollus Iss'Wyrm" spelled correctly. "Doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, does it? I don't suppose you still have that trident, do you?"

Jozhur approves of Parnell's idea, and recounts the time a sea serpent swallowed Bralin, illiciting a chuckle from the dwarf. "Why did you go to such lengths to preserve it? Any chance it's still around?"

Bralin describes the wooden guardian they fought in the Crying Woods. "Seems you spend a lot of time fighting creatures much bigger than your average critter," Parnell observes. "Did this guardian have a name? If not, care to name it for me?" He also sketches out the described guardian. The thing towers over the Sea Dragons, half obscured by a mist it seems to be appearing from. There's a blank spot on the bottom, surrounded by an ornate border. No doubt it's reserved for a name.

Aexana comes up blank. Parnell smiles warmly and moves on.

Fang describes the Fearsome Fungus of Florence. "That DOES sound dreadful indeed. Did this fungus have any relation to the Purple Plague of Prague you mentioned? Seems like you've fought your fair share of alliterative evil. What kind of head did this scarecrow have? Pumpkin? Burlap sack?" He sketches the beast out according to Fang's description.

Tahni adds the Colossus of Fae Skiemir to the list. "Anti-magic field? That doesn't sound very fair," Parnell observes as he begins drawing. The result is a gigantic metal humanoid, surrounded by broken weaponry. The Sea Dragons are featured prominently. A beam of energy is erupting from Tahni's hand, only to bounce harmlessly off the Colossus.

Parnell takes a moment to go over all the artwork he created of the monsters you've fought. "I'm keen on accuracy, so please correct any mistakes I've made." There are a few, but he deftly corrects each image until they accurately show your triumphs.

When he's satisfied, he sets the artwork aside and moves the individual biographies he's started back in front of him. "It's important for people to empathize with their heroes, and to do that they need to know you strugle too. With that in mind, I wonder if you wouldn't tell me if there was a time you were unhappy with the outcome of your adventures? Is there something you regret? Something you wish you could do over? Maybe some time you...dare I say...failed?" He looks to Aexana. "You've been rather quiet so far, madam. Might we start with you?"

Fang goes into more detail about the scarecrow. At the alteration comment she pauses. "Oh yeah, I guess so. I'm bad with names so I might just remember those two because of how catchy they are. There was a whole thing were I and some fellow priests spent most of a year chasing a priest of Marteous around as he tried to spread all kinds of plagues. Both of those were related to that."

At the question about regrets she grows solemn. "My greatest regret will always be the slaughter of my original tribe. I was a great warrior in it and I sought personal glory in battle against an rival orcish clan. My ambition and bloodlust left an opening that they exploited and everyone I had ever known died. Though without that I may have never found Alemi and become a Dragon I will always carry that pain with me."

He simply stares at the biographer for a solid two minutes.
Finally, he sighs heavily.

Bralin reaches into his pack, and pulls out a three inch high statuette of white marble.
It is a masterwork quality likeness of a teen aged, good looking human boy, with wavy hair and a strong chin. He hands it to Parnell for the man's inspection.

"I have spoken of my journey to Koshe Marr, and our recovery of all but one of the school children. His name was Devrin. He was in my care as we made our escape. We found a guide to lead us...but were deceived. The guide was a vampire. And he...turned...the youth."

"And so I destroyed him. Devrin."

"So, tell me Parnell Ragsby, is there more to you than meets the eye? You ask the Sea Dragons to bare our souls. Will you allow me to peer into yours as well?"

If the target fails their save the seeker knows their alignment and personality, and gains a +2 Insight bonus to attacks, armor class, and spell DC against the creature. Creatures almost universally view the use of probe psyche as unnerving at best, rude and insulting at worst. NPCs subjected to the power shift their attitude toward the soulseeker by 1d3 steps toward hostile.

And so our heroes continue their interview with Parnell. Terser speaks of internal strife within the Sea Dragons, stopping Parnell's writing. "Really?" he starts. "Care to elaborate on that?"

Fang mentions the slaughter of his tribe, and his own part in it. Aexana lives a life without regret for her actions, though she does miss old friends. Parnell nods along. "One of the Iron Dragons said something similar when I interviewed them," he starts. "Restlin, a wizard and priest of Wardd. He said he took the loss of an adventuring companion, be it to death or just them moving on, was the hardest part of the life for him."

Bralin doesn't have to think hard about his answer, though it is difficult to get out. Parnell looks up from his writing. "I'd understand if you'd like me to not record that. Not that I'm judging your actions, but that's a stain some who don't understand what difficult choices your and your kind must make would take issue with. I'll leave that up to you."

Parnell's voice has turned dispassionate during this portion of the interview.

Sense motive 25, Highlight to display spoiler: {He's trying to not show any judgement or sympathy, and most assuredly not offering any advice or consolation.}

Jozhur shares Aexana's regret, especially regarding one named Reggie. He also explains the sea serpent was eaten. "Ah, pity. I'd hoped you'd had it preserved. Would have made an excellent backdrop."

Rill has regrets, but they're pretty minor. He's more interested in the person conducting the interview. If he takes issue with Rill's questioning, he hides it perfectly.

"Trading cards and collectibles are my primary product, but not my only one. I also produce biographies, as well as true adventure tales of the Dragon Consortium. All such publications are done with the explicit permission of all persons involved, and fair royalties are paid or donated to a cause of their choosing." He places pen and paper down and sits back in his chair.

"I understand if you wish to confirm this. You may cast your spell. I've also had the pleasure of interviewing all living Dragon Consortium groups; any of them could provide a reference." There is no animosity in his voice as he speaks.

Rill's spell reveals Parnell is LG. He is a precise, neat man with a head for business and the heart of an artist. He appears to be just who he says he is. A grimace crosses his face as the spell does its work. Afterwards, he is just very slightly cooler to Rill.

"If we're satisfied," he continues once he recovers, "let's wrap up the more macabre questioning. Last serious one before we start painting in earnest.

"Death. It follows your kind throughout your careers. I wouldn't be surprised if a few of you had come back in addition to Aexana here. Adventurers of your caliber do not stay dead for long, though. What are your feelings on this? Gargul would deny most requests for another chance on life. Is it fair that adventurers are so often allowed to return to life?

"It's a pointed question, I realize. Maybe you feel trapped? Do you feel you're expected to return to life and endure more hardships so that the rest of us may live in relative peace?"

Fang only needs half a moment's consideration to come up with her own answer. "As a healer death and suffering are my enemies. It comes for us all, but I try to stave it off for as many as I can. As a warrior, I also hand out death to those who oppose me. I balance these two halves of myself by always asking this question: Will those I save reduce the suffering of others? Would those I kill increase the suffering of others?

It's never an easy question, and I imagine the gods face similar ones. If Gargul decides that one life returned will prevent the suffering and death of many more then I must have faith in his choice and do my best to ensure it has the desired result. For those he refuses to allow a return of I too must accept that choice and have faith that their time has come. I make similar choices every time I call on my god for healing or swing my axe against evil."

Parnell's question was bound to tweak some noses. Fang, Aexana, and Tahni give well thought out, simple answers.

He nods at Bralin's request for his story not to be recorded. "I always honor such wishes, Master Bralin. I have made no record of the tragedy, though I do thank you for sharing it with me. Having a better understanding of my subjects always translates to a better finished product, in my mind." Bralin states the question should be directed to Gargul. "Ah, were I trying to understand the reasons why some are returned and others not, I surely would seek counsel of his priesthood. My question is regarding your feelings on the matter, though." He does not press the issue further.

Terser decides the particulars of their internal strife should remain in the past. Parnell graciously accepts the response and let's the subject go. He gives his own thoughts on Gargul's favor. "Interesting," Parnell responds. "Though I'd not expect most to think Gargul's mercy can be bought. Not that you were insinuating that, of course. It's usually an unspoken understanding that people who come back are people with means, yet you've chosen to speak it."

Rill turns the question back on Parnell. "Begging your pardon, Master Rill, but my question was not influenced by my personal beliefs on this matter. I've been doing this a long time; I've found how people answer the question says a lot about them. Personally, I'm much more fearful of a world where heroes such as yourself cannot return to make our world safer for all its people."

Parnell takes a moment to gather the papers he's filled with drawings and notes, separating them into one pile for each of you. "There," he says with a smile. "Hard part's over. The last thing I'll need before we progress to capturing your likenesses is a quote from each of you. It's something new I'm trying: a personal quote from each of our Dragon Consortium hero cards accompanying their portrait. Doesn't need to be anything too fanciful, just something memorable you've said in the past that reveals what makes you tick. Or, perhaps just a particularly humorous quip, or an intimidating cry shouted to your enemies. Your call."

Parnell jots quick notes on the back of a discarded drawing as the group talks. He doesn't interrupt and offers only "uh huh" and "mm hmm"s to indicate he's listening.

When the ideas stop coming, Parnell speaks up again. "Excellent. Allow me to lay out my ideas for each of you. Please, please do speak up if any of you are unhappy with what I've come up with." He presents a rough sketch for each of you.

Terser stands ready to strike down a swooping wyvern. Parnell has drawn the beast especially large for dramatic effect. Terser's spear is braced against the attack, and various trophies can be seen attached to it. His face is a mask of calmness, though his body is obviously tensed and ready to attack.

Rill's face is partially obscured by a cloak as he walks through an ancient looking room. A crypt, probably. One hand rests on a holy symbol of Gargul that matches his own, the other is outstretched partially, fingers splayed. A burst of energy radiates from him, tearing apart several undead that one assumes were charging him from behind a moment before. His eyes are obscured, but his posture is relaxed. He does not look at the explosion.

Aexana sits in a garden, sipping a cup of tea. Behind her, several assassins have been snared by roots and vines erupting from the ground. They are held aloft, weapons falling from their hands. Several tiny humanoids fly about the assassins, laughing and teasing them. Aexana is obviously enjoying her tea.

Tahni leans against the railings of a ship, assumed to be the Lionfish. A few wispy clouds can be seen in the distance, but it's obviously a sunny, beautiful day. The ship has just hit a swell, causing a spray of sea foam to erupt behind her. She is relaxed and smiling brightly.

Fang, who is obviously a woman, kneels over a wounded soldier. Divine energy flows through her, stitching the solder's wounds. Behind her a huge scarecrow has been chopped to pieces. Fang's greataxe rests nearby, covered with ichor. The look on her face is reassuring as she heals the wounded man.

Jozhur stands in the sands of the Dirt City arena. The rest of the Sea Dragons are fighting various beasts, but are not detailed. The perspective is from partially behind Jozhur, showing only a sliver of his face. A slight smile is on his lips. He is in the middle of stowing his bow and stepping into a shadow; he has partially disappeared from view. Several arrows stick out of the vemerak charging him.

Parnell pauses a moment before he reveals Bralin's. "I admit I had a difficult time with yours, Master Bralin. I do hope you'll like what I've come up with."

Bralin is stepping out from the torn throat of a giant sea serpent. His axe is surrounded by tiny snow flurries and blood has frozen while dripping down it. The look on Bralin's face is resolute, as if this is just another day in the life for him.

Character portraits done, he also lays down two additional sketches showing Billoopl and Ja'Kollu Iss'Wyrm. The Sea Dragons can be seen fighting in both sketches, but they are very small compared to the monsters they fight. The focus is not on them.

He also has one more to show. "I had an idea to make a two-sided card for this last one." He lays down two more pieces of paper. On one, all of you are out to sea on the Lionfish. Bonetown is distantly visible behind you. Jozhur mans the wheel, and all of you are looking forward with some mix of excitement, determination, and happiness. On the other, the Lionfish returns to port with several additional humanoids, including a few sketchy characters in manacles. A large crowd has gathered to see the return.

"There's also your group portrait, which I made earlier." He sits back. "So, thoughts? I assure you I can handle critques. Getting this right is more important to me than my own ego."

Rill is impressed. Rill holds out a holy symbol to Gargul made of a strange, grey metal that hangs around his neck and is a bit incongruous to his white robes and gleaming mithral headband..

"Parnell, you have exceeded my expectations. I think you got my image right. Kindly make sure you include this particular holy symbol, though. It appeared in my room when I was called to serve Gargul, and it has never left my possession."

"Just minor details perhaps... you could go a bit more lively on the colours... " Aex's hair being all purple pink and her robes a mishmash of vibrant greens...

"So has it come to this... , the little greenmage thinks, "Is this what it means to be 'famous' perhaps?

Feeling quite uncomfortable still with all the attention she casts a smiling eye on everyone's painting.

So long as you change my spear to a glaive, we should be good. And maybe show the festival in the background, to show why I had to slay the beast.

We do get our own copies of these, yes?

Parnell releases a breath he didn't realize he was holding as the Sea Dragons approve of his work. He is very pleased, blushing just a touch.

Rill asks Parnell do his best to capture his personal holy symbol. "Of course, Master Rill. If you'd be so kind as to hold it a moment..." He grabs a blank sheet of paper and a few sticks of graphite and charcoal. In no time, he's produced a perfect drawing of it. "There. I've found many adventurers are not suited to posing for portraits. Modeling is much harder work than some people realize. I like to work from illustrations as much as possible. Rest assured this will be prominently displayed in the finished work."

Fang corrects some details on the scarecrow, which Parnell fixes in real time.

Bralin approves. Parnell releases another breath he didn't realize was still in there.

Aexana no doubt notices the sketch is done in grayscale, but asks that the finished product be vibrant. If she is not wearing her green robes, Parnell asks her to briefly model them for her.

Tahni blushes, but approves.

Terser asks the glaive match his own. "Certainly. Might I be able to sketch it similar to Master Rill's?" He asks a few probing questions to get an idea of the state of the festival when he faced the wyvern. Terser also asks about copies. "Oh yes! I make two copies of each card here. One is a proof I'll use to create more, the other is yours to keep."

Jozhur gives a slap on the shoulder that shakes the slight artist, but Parnell smiles back.

"Thank you. Thank you all. Now, if you'll give me some time and space, I'll get to work on the final copies." From his bag, he produces an ornate wooden box. Both sides open, revealing several rows of small paint bottles, along with an assortment of tiny brushes and knives. From a leather tube attached to the side of the bag, he pulls a wooden contraption out. It's held together by screws and strips of metal. He expertly adjusts and assembles it into a small table-top easel. He opens the metal box containing his card stock, checking each to make sure the corners are still sharp after collecting them earlier. The easel can be adjusted to securely hold the small cards.

Then, he gets to work. Parnell spends hours hunched over the small cards with his tiny tools. His movements are precise, his technique is flawless. It takes time, but when he's finished he has two rows of fourteen cards each. There are seven cards showing our heroes, two group portraits (one double sided, one sharing drinks in a tavern), and monster cards for Billoopl, Ja'Kollu Iss'Wyrm, a bandersnatch, a froghemoth, and the scarecrow Fang described.

Aexana's card stands out due to the bright colors used, but all are of excellent quality. Parnell has taken your requests seriously.

Rill's quote about not messing with dwarves has been placed under Bralin's card, though Rill is credited with saying it. Tahni's quote about being intact is under hers.

"One last thing, then we can wrap this up. You'll notice your cards lack a border." It's true. There's a narrow white border around each of your personal cards. The two sided group portrait has a diamond-colored border. Billoopl's card has a golden one. Ja'Kollu has a silver one. The rest are bronze.

"I produce fewer of each card as the quality of the border increases. This two-sided one will be especially rare. It increases its value significantly. While I reserve the right to assign border colors to your cards, I do like to ask for the group's input before deciding. Three of these cards will be bronze, two silver, one gold, and one diamond." He looks expectantly at the lot of you.

Rill scratches his short beard, a frown on his face as he shruggs.

"I dunno Parnell - you can do whatever you think works best. Maybe someone else had an opinion. Do you need funding for these borders?"

(Diamond colored? What color is diamond? Do you mean the border is actually covered in diamonds?)

Tahni feels a little bad speaking up, however there is one color that stands out to her. "Whilst they all look fantastic, would anyone mind if I had one of the silver borders?"

The color would be fitting given that Queen Maab - Tahni's patron - has been known to appear as a silver dragon. It would be a nice, subtle tribute.

Aex listens when everyone takes their pick on the colors...

"Euhm... I claim a support role in the ranks of the Sea Dragons. Using potions and stuff to empower our group. Aided with animals shapes and additional plant support... Sounds like a Bronze role if you ask me. I'm not the boldest nor the most outspoken member of the group. Bronze will attract little attention but it could be a mistake not to mind the bronze characters... their support role could prove powerful.

I don't quite agree with Fang's assessment of her role within this group. Doesn't matter if you joined us last lass... your power has proven invaluable already. The least well known card could hold terrible power yet to be explored... not bronze if you ask me. So I'd like to switch with Fang."

Is that about right?"

With a happy clap, Parnell makes his notes. With a large flourish, he finishes and snaps his book shut!

"I cant begin to tell you all how happy you've made me! A new Dragon Group to inspire fans around the globe! Its funny how few requests I get for stuff from the Gold or Platinum Dragons these days..."

He trails off with a smile, clearly reminiscing. Suddenly, he remembers Rills question.

"No sir, no sir. There will be many many, of these printed. We will use artwork to draw and illustrate the borders. All they signify is the rarity.. and eventually the value.. of the cards." As he speaks, Parnell is standing up, gathering his things.

"Really though, you have all been such great characters! Larger than life! Even your dwarfs are more dwarfy than any dwarf who has ever dwarfed!"

He makes his rounds to each of the Sea Dragons, offering his hand.

"I'll have a promo set shipped out to you all. Most heroes keep them as mementos, but to be honest, many trade them for favors. My cards and figures hold a lot of value to collectors, and the ones I'll give you from the first print run will be one of a kind and priceless, to someone who values these sorts of trinkets."

With a big intake a breath, followed by a loud and sudden exhale, he smiles awkwardly. "Unless I can help you all with anything.. I think its about time I take my leave! Thanks so much again!"
