Rill (MarkB) HP 78/103 - AC 27/17/25 CMD 22
Sunday July 9th, 2017 7:04:23 PM

As Rill waits for an answer on the location of the mage's workroom, he helps pack up the item found into his Bag of Holding. He keeps some of the alchemical item in pockets for ready access.

DM Kathy
Sunday July 9th, 2017 9:09:52 PM

You pack away the loot, and drag the bodies down the hall a ways so they won't upset the children. Well, so they won't upset the children any more. Once the bodies are out of the way, Zeoll dismisses the Obscuring Mist, and you can see the children. And they can see you.

Now that you're no longer distracted, you can get a headcount, and you can tell that there are 11 half-orc toddlers, something less than the couple dozen [i]Tishe'[/b] had estimated, but in her defense, they were making an awful lot of noise. The human girl makes a total of 12 children.

The toddlers are upset and frightened because everything was loud and scary, and because the girl who takes care of them was frightened, and they picked up on it. They can be soothed, although it takes a while. Reggie cannot tell by just looking at them which one is Ky; they're all of a similar age, and while they're not identical, they look enough alike that it's difficult to tell which one is the child she hasn't seen since he was an infant.

The girl is old enough to understand what was happening, and she is terrified. Of you. It's true that the people who owned her didn't treat her very well, but they didn't treat her very badly either, and now you've slaughtered a bunch of them, and she's pretty sure she's next. She cowers against the wall, whimpering. Anytime one of you approaches, she cries, "No, please, please, no!" and flinches away.

Some of you head down the hall to examine the room where the wizards had been working. It's easy to spot because you find the door standing open. Inside you find a square room with a large square table in the center. Two chairs are drawn up to the table, and pens, ink pots, and papers lay jumbled on its surface. The specifics of the papers are difficult to make out, though one of them is clearly labeled "FORMULA FOR TANGLEBURN BAGS."

Along the walls are shelves holding various bottles and jars, most empty, a few containing ingredients. There are also countertop workstations.

Two human men are in the room, one washing out bottles in a small basin, the other measuring powder out of a small bag into tiny jars. They look up, startled, as you come in. They are wearing simple clothing, and one man's sleeve is short enough that you can see the slave tattoo on his upper arm.

Zeoll casts Charm Person on the girl, a couple times if needed. Will Save DC 20.

Once he has her magically more calmed, down, he uses his diplomacy to change her attitude towards everyone.

Diplomacy 42.

He tries to make friends with the kids too, with songs and stories and being nice.

He asks Rill to use his magic gargulvision to pick out which one is Reggie's kid.

Is the butler still around? If so, Zeoll asks him how many of the staff are slaves, and if they would like their freedom this day. That goes for him too of course.

Jozhur bluntly explains the situation to the slaves, "Umm, hello. Sunaar is dead. You are free to leave the island with us if you like, as free men." Jozhur gives the room a thorough look over (perception: 25) for any valuable information or items. "What are they working on here? What were they doing with the children?"

Terser doesn't know if there's an extra berth on the ship, but an alchemist is a fine thing to have around. If one of these men could make those fancy items the guards had, it would be well worth the wages and material cost to have them in their employ.

He'll suggest this to the captain once the children are calmed.

At the mention of "Gargulvision," Rillett gives the old liontaur a flat look. And then proceeds to use Probe Psyche on the children one by one, hoping to determine which is Ky. He as already used this on Reggie, and so he hopes that will make it easier to sort out which is her son.

"Let's remember there is a Mistress Aerdhuryn that lives here. If she is her husband's equal, we could have trouble simply leaving." He asks the butler about her, and if she would move to stop out departure. He also asks if she is here of her own free will.

---------------------------------
Probe Psyche - After one minute of observation and/or conversation, a seeker can use this ability, with a Sense Motive check at DC 30, to know the creature's alignment and fully understand the creature's personality. This also gives the seeker insight into that particular creature, gaining a +2 Insight bonus to attacks, armor class, and spell DC against the creature.

Zod rejoins his scaled companion in the hall and scratches her head idly, giving Rill the 11 minutes needed to analyze the children, and Johzur time to search the lab. "Would that I had a mind for potions & mixtures myself..." He says wistfully after eyeing the stocked workshop.

As the Soulseeker's eyes go ghost, Zod chuckles and wanders a bit further from the room of toddlers.

He stands lookout with Bralin. Perception 30.

OOC: Zeoll has wiz levels? Seems like 2 spellbooks in the loot is almost wasted on our party xD

Also, I believe Jozhur would make the best use of the alchemical splash weapons, as he should be able to add his precision Sneak Damage to them, whenever it would apply.

Zeoll casts Charm Person, and the girl immediately recognizes him as a friend. She flings her arms around him and sobs. "Oh, I'm so glad you're here! I'm so scared! I don't know what to do!" So Zeoll has his hands full for a time.

Meanwhile, Rill attempts to use his Probe Psyche ability to find Ky. He soon realizes that strolling through the unformed minds of toddlers is very different from assessing adults. You wind up with one little tyke that you think is probably Ky, though you can't say for sure.

Zod and Bralin stand guard.

In the alchemy room, Tishe' sweeps up the notes and announces her intention of burning the place. Jozhur informs the two slaves that they are free men now. They blink at you, not sure what to make of your statement. [OOC: You're not on an island; you're on the coast of Aisildur, which is part of the mainland.] Terser speculates that an alchemist would be useful, but soon discovers that the actual alchemists are dead in the hallway. The slaves just do the grunt work.

When he is able to speak to the butler, Zeoll learns that the household servants are not slaves; they work for wages. "Wh-what are you going to do with us?" he asks.

Zeoll calms the girl and asks for the names of all the kids. (No need to make them up, kindly DM, just looking for another way to figure out which one is Reggie's son.)

The old liontaur tells the butler that the group came here to rescue those wrongfully sold into slavery. "We hurrt only those who hurrt us firrst."

Since his ideas haven't seemed to pan out, Terser just stays out of the way while the family gets reunited. When Tishe' mentions blowing up the lab, he gets a little concerned about the entire building coming down.

"Did anyone check into the laws regarding slavery here? I know it's wrong, but the government might not think so. Perhaps we should make sure they can't identify us and send mercenaries to find us and make us report back. Or worse, lawyers. "

While doing so, she carefully arranges vials and beakers (those that are not complete and so keeping as treasure) to the far side of the room. "It's a good thing workrooms are usually designed for being resistant to accidents", the spellweaver mentions off-hand.

Once everyone is out, Tishe' considers her handiwork, then weaves a spell that sends a sonic blast against every glass, ceramic, or other crystalline structure in the far side of the room!

Zod frowns at the thought of the Aisildurian Empire coming after them, scratches the nub of one horn, and shrugs. "Privateers, I think our Captain would say." He responds to Bralin with a smile. "But I don't think Aisildur has any jurisdiction in the Middle Seas, so whatever retribution they might seek will find no lawful backing where we're going in any case."

He flexes his muscles, smile broadening into a grin. "And I ain't too worried about what this slaver nation thinks or tries to pull on us."

The minotaur is ready to go, and takes a forward position with his companion, not wanting to herd a gaggle of toddlers in the back.

Personal message from Jerry about why this is important and why Woldians should give back to this site by doing what they can.

WHAT IS NET NEUTRALITY?

Net neutrality is the basic principle that protects our free speech on the Internet. "Title II" of the Communications Act is what provides the legal foundation for net neutrality and prevents Internet Service Providers like Comcast, Verizon, and AT&T from slowing down and blocking websites, or charging apps and sites extra fees to reach an audience (which they then pass along to consumers.)

WHY IS NET NEUTRALITY IMPORTANT?

The Internet has thrived precisely because of net neutrality. It's what makes it so vibrant and innovative—a place for creativity, free expression, and exchange of ideas. Without net neutrality, the Internet will become more like Cable TV, where the content you see is what your provider puts in front of you.

Zeoll calms the girl down, and is able to get the kids' names from her. Only about half of them have "official" names; the others she has given nicknames: Toot-toot, Stompy, Wiggles, etc. The one she identifies as Ky is the one that Rill picked out.

Terser has some belated concern about legal liability, but luckily Tishe''s plan will not burn down the house. Instead, she shatters all the glass in the former alchemy lab, making quite a mess.

Rill asks about Mistress Aerdhuryn. "She is a great lady," the butler replies. "Of course she is here of her own free will! What do you take us for?" He does not want to come with you.

Also, if you ask him, the butler can tell you that slavery is legal in Aisildur, subject to a large number of rules and regulations.

Zod is ready to go. Jozhur seems to be ready as well, and gives the slaves from the alchemy room a choice of what to do next. After a lot of hesitating and dithering, both decide to come with you.

Reggie is at last reunited with the son she hasn't seen in over a year. Ky looks healthy, well-fed, and pretty dirty.

Tishe' adds some words about the difference between legal and moral.

Zeoll picks up two of the toddlers.

Terser and Bralin manage to get three more toddlers onto the tower shield.

Reggie, at long last, reunites with the son she hasn't seen since he was a baby. "Mommie's here," she tells him. "Hi, Mommie," he responds cheerfully, although he doesn't seem to know what "mommie" means. He'll learn soon enough, though.

Meanwhile, Jozhur, Tishe', and Zod try to encourage the toddlers to walk along with the group. They seem more or less amenable to the idea, but they are toddlers and they don't walk so good yet. You can either go very slowly and be very patient, or you can pick them up and carry them.

Without being asked, the two freed slaves from the alchemy lab each pick up a toddler. Assuming Reggie carries Ky, that leaves three toddlers to be carried by the remaining four adventurers, so I'll assume that happens.

At the island, I can create stone, so we may be able to get some shelters and fortifications up pretty quickly.

"But first, we'll need to clear it of it's current slaver inhabitants.

"And let's not forget that we promised to rescue that enslaved woman's kids. I can probably scry them and with Tishe's help we should be able to teleport to wherever they are."

Tishe' has to give Rillet a chagrined look. "Only Dim Door, I don't have any other teleporting spells."

On the idea of using Slaver Island as a refuge, Tishe' asks if that wouldn't be dangerous, since all the slavers know where it is.

Once back aboard, Tishe' finds a quieter place belowdecks with Bralin's damaged shield. She carefully weaves one of her strongest spells, a Blue Level spell as her mentor in far-away Hook City would have called it, and repairs his shield.

"First, we must bring these women and children to the safety of Bonetown, and your people there can begin preparations. I agree our next move should be the rescue of Madra's children. If we're lucky, that journey will bring recoverable ships across our path. If not, I'm sure between us we can still improvise a sound ambush for Market Island."

Dropping a toddler off the shield is quite enough to get Bralin's adrenaline flowing again, and the dwarf needs a couple moments to relax before resuming the descent.

At their arrival on The Lionfish, he gratefully turns over his shield to Tishe for repairs.

The newly stated quest to end slavery in the Middle Seas is startling, but as he in favor of such a task, Bralin makes no comment.

Once back aboard the Lionfish, Zeoll begins making plans for taking over Market Island and turning it into a home for freed slaves. Rill favors the idea, but Tishe' wonders whether it would be putting the newly freed slaves in harm's way.

Tishe' is able to repair Bralin's shield.

Reggie, of course, has eyes only for her son. He seems healthy enough, and he can walk and speak very short sentences. He and the other toddlers are all fascinated with the Lionfish, which they demonstrate by running around underfoot and coming very close to tumbling overboard. The crew aren't sure what to make of the new passengers.

Jozhur asks the two men if there's anywhere they want to go. One says yes; he would like to return to his town and see what has become of his family. The other doesn't seem to have any specific place he wants to be.

Zod reminds his companions that first things need to come first, and that means rescuing Madra's children. Madra enthusiastically endorses this proposal. Tula pipes up to say that before you do any of those things, you'll need to re-provision. Probably not right here, since you just vandalized a house and made off with valuable property, but soon.

The spellweaver is a little confused, but puts it out of her mind. The extra people aboard are definitely going to need provisions and they shouldn't presume that Rillet's spells will provide for everyone.

She thinks about they lay of the land, but isn't very geographically savvy. "So, are we closer to Faragunia, Dirt City, or the Centaur Isles?"

Zeoll asks his friends (privately) if anyone objects to heading directly to rescue Madra's kids. From the Aisildur shore, Farungia has got to be closer than Bonetown.

He wonders about maybe letting the younger generation -- the kids and families -- live permanently on the Lionfish. He ponders some way to rig the ship so that the part with the kids can detatch as needed to let the other part, the fighting part, head into danger. Figuring that out would be quite an enterprise, which would ensure the safety of the next generation.

I do not think that having families aboard is a good idea - we will put this ship in danger from time to time. But I could see looking after Reggie’s child aboard the vessel if necessary."

"What provisioning do we need Tula, and where is the nearest port for such? I can create enough food and water for a time. However, I cannot create rope and tar.”

“I am very concerned heading into conflict with these children aboard, but the trip to Bonetown a long one. I could teleport with some each day over several days. The sooner we can rescue Madra’s children the better."

Reggie tries to teach the half-orc tots about sailing, but they're still pretty little for that level of complexity. You are able to impart some basic safety rules, like "stay off the ladders," and "don't mess with the knots," but lessons on the value of hard work and order are going to have to wait a year or two.

Zod attempts to ride herd on the children, with limited success.

Actually, your greatest allies in child-wrangling prove to be Madra and the little slave girl. Madra has experience with young children, and although she misses her own, she is willing to pitch in and help. The slave girl, for her part, seems to have developed a genuine affection for her young charges, and continues to take responsibility for them--a situation that concerns Madra. "She's too young to take on so much, poor thing," Madra says. "She's not much more than a baby herself. I asked her what her name was, and she said it was Girl. Can you imagine?"

The rest of you are trying to figure out what Comeri means. Tula capably sails the Lionfish to a medium-sized port in Fargunia. Asking around, Zeoll is able to determine that it is a very small island in the Middle Seas. Armed with this information, you are able to find it on the navigation charts. So at least you know where you're going.

Your DM will also remind you that the broker who bought Madra's children is known to supply slaves to mining operations.

Sensing the surrounding seas, Zod focuses on the terrain, seeking three facts - the number and location of islands within range (10 mile radius). Presence and general number of people on the islands and surrounding seas. If the islands have any of what Johzur, Terser, or Bralin say people would be mining.

After the 10 minute casting time and brief parlay with Maab's domain, Zod tells the others what he finds.

------------------

Commune With Nature: You become one with nature, attaining knowledge of the surrounding territory. You instantly gain knowledge of as many as three facts from among the following subjects: the ground or terrain, plants, minerals, bodies of water, people, general animal population, presence of woodland creatures, presence of powerful unnatural creatures, or even the general state of the natural setting.

In outdoor settings, the spell operates in a radius of 1 mile per caster level. In natural underground settings—caves, caverns, and the like—the spell is less powerful, and its radius is limited to 100 feet per caster level. The spell does not function where nature has been replaced by construction or settlement, such as in dungeons and towns.
