Guards, Guards!

[Everyone take 6000 XP for the previous scene.]

Your journey to Aisildur is uneventful. You don't have a specific location for Jonos Aerdhuryn's manor house, but you can get close enough for your spells and divinations to take over. The house is large, and fairly new, perched atop a cliff overlooking the sea. On the shore at the base of the cliff is a small, private dock. There are no boats there at present. It would be a bit tricky, but the Lionfish could tie up there. Or she could ride at anchor and you could take the small boat to the dock.

It is early afternoon.

Rill stands ready to go.

He looks up at the cliff and at the empty docs in the distance. "Hmmm. How to best proceed? I tend to favor a direct approach, but what do the rest of you think?"

((Mark what?))

Zod, planning no diplomacy on his part, agrees with the direct approach, and suggests anchoring the Lionfish offshore and taking the smaller boat to the dock (if there's an issue with room, Zod can Wildshape into a water elemental & swim alongside).

Zod casts his long-duration buffs. Reduce Animal on Kunda; Greater Magic Fang and Longstrider on his companion & himself with Improved Share Spells. Unless it looks like a fight is imminent when they land, the medium-sized snake climbs up onto Zods shoulders and he carries her.

Also, if Terser agrees, Zod goes through a Mailed Fist training routine with the dwarf each morning on the deck of the Lionfish.

[Mailed Fist] Team Tactics: At the start of each day, a specialist can go over the ins-and-outs of a teamwork feat with a single ally (ie, any friendly creature). For the entire day, that ally is treated as knowing one teamwork feat the Specialist possesses, but only for the purposes of the specialist activating his own teamwork feats. Outflank. ((If Terser's cool with it, Zod gets +4 instead of +2 when flanking with him)).

(Rill needs 82% or less to succeed - 52% - success!)
--------------------------
Divination - ...a divination spell can provide you with a useful piece of advice in reply to a question concerning a specific goal, event, or activity that is to occur within 1 week. The advice granted by the spell can be as simple as a short phrase, or it might take the form of a cryptic rhyme or omen. If your party doesn't act on the information, the conditions may change so that the information is no longer useful. The base chance for a correct divination is 70% + 1% per caster level, to a maximum of 90%. If the die roll fails, you know the spell failed, unless specific magic yielding false information is at work.

Terser is always willing to learn new fighting techniques. Over the course of the journey, he learns how to position himself to open up an enemy to Zod's attacks. Considering his reach allows him to threaten many enemies, it should not be too difficult for Zod to get to a flanking position.

When they reach Aisildur, he suggests that they go into town before approaching the manor and get an idea of what type of man Jonos is.

However the old liontaur asks Reggie to stay behind with the Lionfish. What if she is recognized? What if the child sees her and gives away the game. And the old liontaur is secretly not sure she is up to it. She has been so quiet lately.

Before going ashore, Zeoll will sound his horn and also cast Mage Armor and Glibness. Anyone want Mage Armor?

Rill casts a Divination, and receives the following answer: Charm goes west; stealth goes south.

At Zod's suggestion, you take the small boat, leaving the Lionfish at anchor. You row up to the dock and tie off.

Exploring the beach a bit, you find the path up to the house. It is, of course, steep, and slippery in places. Stair steps have been hewn into especially steep sections.

It's not the smoothest path, but it seems safe enough. Even a bad slip-and-fall will probably earn you no more than a bruised shin and a sprained dignity.

You're not entirely sure what the answer to Rill's divination means, but you can easily see that to reach the manor at all, you'll need to get up the cliff, so up you go.

Assessing the stonework, Terser is unimpressed. It's sound enough, and won't crumble into the sea anytime soon, but it has no elegance about it, no style, no sense of pride in the workmanship. Whoever made the trail just hacked steps where they were needed and called it good. Any proper stoneworker would be ashamed of it.

At the back of the pack, Zod is still wondering about the divination, and Bralin is trying not to step on Kunda's tail. She hisses in annoyance, and seems to be missing the island with all its nice trees and tasty mice.

In the middle of the pack, Zeoll casts a few preparatory spells, and Tishe' stands ready to cast more if needed.

A house perched majestically atop the cliffs, and a private dock, are both nice things to have. However, you are discovering that getting from one to the other is a bit of a chore. You are all adventurers; you are all in good shape, but even you have to admit that climb is not for the faint of heart.

You do reach the top at last, however, and now have a view of the manor house full-on. It is very nice, sporting a graceful colonnade in the front, and wings sweeping out to either side. The path from the cliff joins with a road, and then as you get close to the house, splits off again in three distinct roads. One goes right up to the front of the house, via a sweeping drive. That road leads more or less westward. The other two roads branch off and seem to be curving toward the wings--one to the north, and one to the south.

There is smoke coming from several chimneys, so obviously somebody is home.

"Ok, this is a big, fancy manor house with multiple fires going for warmth or cooking. That means servants that may not deserve our wrath."

Rill pulls out an apple he brought along and takes a bite.

"A fancy house with such an arduous climb suggests the uses magic to get from down there to up here."

He takes another couple bites and wipes juice from his chin. Then he takes off his helmet and tucks it under his arm, and magically returns his white robes to their clean and pressed state. He wears no backpack, and his morning star hangs at his side. A couple of holy symbols to Gargul are in obvious view.

Rill casts Guidance on Zeoll. "Lead on my charming taur, and let's see if we can avoid burning this place to the ground. I'm a bit doubtful on that count."

The dwarf stops, and spends a moment or two working through the idea he just apologized to a snake.
After deciding it doesn't even make the list of "Really Odd Events in my Life", he takes a glance at the stonework, tsks in disgust, and continues climbing.

At the top of the cliff, he nods in acknowledgement of Rill's conclusion that path is not the standard route into or out of this place, and magic is certainly involved.
"Mayhap a lift of some type as well," he offers.

The warrior waits, and then follows, Zeoll's move.

As you reach the top of the cliff, some of you speculate that the inhabitants of the manor house must use magic to come and go, given the difficulty of the approach. The cliff path is difficult--but the overland approach is a perfectly unremarkable road. And indeed, there were no other boats at the private dock. Perhaps it just isn't used that much.

At any rate, you are not impeded as you make directly for the front door. A few of you make some hasty adjustments, trying to look as normal and nonthreatening as possible. Your success is mixed.

Zeoll rings the front bell. After a short wait, the door is opened by a middle-aged half-elf man in what you take to be house livery. His eyebrows creep up a little when he catches sight of you, but he only says, "May I help you?"

Zeoll explains your errand. "Ah," the half-elf says. "In that case, I fear I must disappoint you. Master Aerdhuryn is away, and is not expected back home for some weeks." He hesitates, then continues. "If you like, I can ask Mistress Aerdhuryn if she will speak with you. Or perhaps Master Sunaar, who is Master Aerdhuryn's assistant."

You look around as you wait at the door, but you are aware that this part of your adventure is Zeoll's show.

Zeoll can tell that his Suggestion effect worked. But the butler looks puzzled by Zeoll's actual request.

"People...in a cage?" he echoes. "I'm afraid I don't--is this something to do with Master Aerdhuryn's business? You must understand, sir, that the household staff are not permitted in Master Aerdhuryn's wing. I don't know what's there, or even where anything is." He seems to be getting more distressed by the minute.

"But please," he says, "step inside, and I will ask Master Sunaar to take you where you need to go."

He steps away from the door and ushers you into a very stately foyer. The floors and walls are polished marble, with tapestries hanging here and there to soften the room a bit. The ceiling, soaring two stories above you, is painted and seems to have gold leaf on it. A grand, sweeping staircase leads to the floor above. Benches and chairs scattered here and there create little conversation areas.

"Please make yourselves comfortable; I'll be back in a moment," he says. And, unless Zeoll wants to issue other instructions, he goes off to fetch the assistant. [OOC: I'm trying to walk the line between keeping things moving and actually railroading you guys. If you want the butler to do something else, he will.]

Rill, concentrating on the butler's motive, can tell that the man is by now quite upset. He's upset that he can't follow Zeoll's instructions, for one thing. He also seems genuinely upset by the thought that there are children in a cage somewhere in the building. However--he doesn't seem entirely surprised by it. It's as if he has an idea that his master isn't entirely on the up-and-up, but had no idea it might be as bad as this.

Zeoll suggests a last-minute alteration to the plans: rather than fetching Sunaar to talk with you, the butler will take you to speak with Sunaar.

He leads, and you follow. You make your way down graceful, well-decorated halls with more tapestries and the occasional statue. At one point, you're pretty sure you hear a fountain somewhere, but you never see it. Terser keeps an eye out for valuables, but there's not much in the hallways. Oh, the tapestries would fetch some coin, no question, but they probably weigh 50 pounds apiece and aren't exactly portable. The little tables and credenzas you pass might have some interesting goodies in their drawers, but they might not.

The butler opens a door at the end of a hallway and leads you down a flight of stairs. The stairs, unlike the hallways you've been moving through, are simple and utilitarian. At the bottom of the stairs is a small antechamber with a single door, made of wood bound in iron. It looks very sturdy. The butler rings a bell set next to the door, and waits.

You all wait with him. You wait for some time, but the butler does not ring the bell again. At last the door is opened, and you see a dark elf man wearing a leather apron over his shirt and breeches. "Yes?" he says.

"Master Sunaar," the butler says. "These good folk came to call on Master Aerdhuryn about--about some business of his," he finishes, clearly backing away from mentioning children in cages.

The dark elf looks at you. "Well?" he says. "State your business; I've a lot to do today."

Zeoll figures second time's the charm, too! "Sunaarr," he says, with a deeply serious tone, "We arre authorrized rrepresentatives of the Empirre of Aisildurr. We know everrything that Aerrdhurryn is up to, and the moment of rrevelation is now at hand. But things can still go easy forr you, my frriend, if you only cooperrate."

That's a Bluff check of 55 to make that load of malarky stick! Nat 20! Woo hoo!

The old liontaur continues, even more compellingly, "I firrmly suggest that you answerr all ourr questions honestly and lead us to see anything we want to investigate on this estate."

That, of course, is a Suggestion spell that Zeoll is casting on the dark elf. The Will DC, again, is 25, but Zeoll hopes that his bluff and offer of leniency will make this a reasonable suggestion, with a bonus to the DC.

Rill can tell that the man is not undead. He seems more annoyed than anything else, though you can tell he intends to cooperate. He's a little concerned about something, but it's hard to say what, exactly. It hasn't yet been a full minute, so your Probe Psyche has no results yet.

"Well," Sunaar replies. "I will, of course, cooperate with the Empire, but I'm really not sure what all the fuss is about. What can I help you with?"

Zeoll asks to be taken to Master Aerdhuryn's wing, which seems to puzzle Sunaar a bit. "Well," he says. "You've arrived at his wing."

"This door leads into the wing," the butler adds.

Sunaar steps back and allows you to enter Jonos Aerdhuryn's domain. You find yourselves in a fairly utilitarian hallway, notably lacking the tapestries and statues and fripperies you saw in the main part of the house.

Zeoll also asks that the butler stay, as a witness. "There are six of you," Sunaar says, puzzled. "What do you need another witness for? Besides, the household staff aren't allowed down here."

The butler himself looks very uncomfortable at the prospect of entering the wing with you. "If you please," he says, "I'd like to return to my duties."

Zod asks where Master Aerdhuryn is. "He is away on business," Sunaar replies. "He is meeting with several of his contacts, and seeking to acquire some materials for the research."

Rill asks specifically about the children. "Well, it's early days yet," Sunaar replies. "They're mostly just eating and growing. The real work will begin in a few years." When Rill and Terser hint that one of the children may be there by mistake, Sunaar shakes his head. "We've got papers for all of them," he says. "I'll show you."

As Sunaar leads you down the hall, Rill's Probe Psyche kicks in. You can tell that Sunaar is Neutral Evil in alignment, and that he prides himself on being a good assistant to Aerdhuryn, and indispensable to his work. You can also tell that Sunaar thinks that Dark Elves are superior to other races.

Meanwhile, Reggie at last reaches the top of the cliff, and heads down the road toward the manor house. The main road leads straight to the front door, via a sweeping drive. Other, lesser roads branch off toward the wings--one heading north, and one south.

Tishe' casts See Invisibility, but sees nothing she didn't see before.

Rill tries a little flattery, which Sunaar seems to respond to. He and Zod ask to see the children.

Terser asks the butler to return to his duties, but Zeoll asks him to stay. Since it is Zeoll's orders he is following, he tags along with the group, clearly unhappy about it.

Sunaar leads the way down the hall, past a couple of closed doors. He reaches am alcove which seems to be a guard post of sorts; two dwarf guards are standing there, watching the hall. Across from the guard post is a door, which Sunaar unlocks and opens, waving you inside.

The room is quite large, and also quite loud. Several half-orc toddlers are in the room, apparently being minded by a very harassed-looking human girl of about 7. All of the children are dressed in motley cast-offs, but they seem reasonably well-fed. The girl has a purpling bruise on her cheek; the toddlers look unharmed. One toddler is sitting on a rug near the middle of the room, crying. No, bellowing. Kid's got some lungs on him. Most of the others seem to be playing, and all of their toys are toy weapons of some kind. One little half-orc bangs a wooden sword enthusiastically on the ground, yelling in delight. Two others are bashing little tin shields together. Another toddler is just running, his little bare feet slap-slap-slapping on the stone floor. The human girl is trying to change the diaper of yet another toddler, and it does not seem to be going well. She says something to the child, which you cannot hear over the cacophony.

"SILENCE!" Sunaar yells, and the playing toddlers stop what they are doing to stare at him. The bellowing one goes right on bellowing, but the noise level has ebbed considerably. "Here are the papers," he continues, stepping over to a cupboard near the door. He pulls out a thick sheaf of papers. "As you can see, they're all in order, and I think you'll find that--what is it, girl?" he asks sharply. You turn, and see the human girl has approached, leading one of the toddlers by the hand. It's probably the one she'd been changing, but it's hard to see for sure.

"Um, Master Sunaar, sir," the girl says. "This one's mark is 'bout wore clear off."

Sunaar sighs. "Very well," he says, and takes the toddler by the hand. "Go see to him," he adds, gesturing to the crying toddler. The girl hurries in that direction, and soon the crying stops. "They're a bit young for slave tattoos," he explains, "so we mark them with ink. But it wears off."

Rill takes the opportunity to ask what's being done with them.

"They're to be an army, of course," Sunaar replies. "An army of half-orcs, large and strong, trained from birth to be formidable fighters. We're just getting started." He reaches back into the cupboard and pulls out a little of ink.

Reggie decides the front door is not for her, so she considers the wings. Only one of them has smoke coming from its chimneys, so she heads in that direction. The road winds around to the "end" of the wing, the south wall. There's a short flight of stairs here, leading down, with a door at the bottom.

Jozhur is ready to throw down, and tries to send his crew a subtle signal to that effect.

Bralin seems dubious about the size of an army that could be raised in a single house, even a large one. "Master Aerdhuryn has many plans," Sunaar replies. "The soldiers are but a small part of his design. And yes, there is some expense, but the soldiers will be absolutely loyal to him. That is important."

Zod wonders what the army will be used for. Sunaar smirks. "Races with shorter lives sometimes cannot appreciate all that can be done over the course of a longer lifespan," he says, unbearably smug. "The soldiers are only part of the plan."

Zeoll begins looking over the paperwork. It's rough going. The papers were prepared by different sellers, and the information is not in the same place on each one. Also, only some of the half-orc toddlers appear to have names. Is the "half-orc babe of about 6 months" purchased a year ago the same half-orc now sucking his fingers and staring raptly at Kunda? How would you even tell? Your group probably has the Divination chops to sort this out eventually, but right now, standing in this room, it's almost impossible to match paperwork to flesh-and-blood kids.

Zeoll also tries to talk to the kids, and since the oldest of the half-orcs is about 2, this doesn't go well. He yells "Kitty!" enthusiastically when you start talking to him, but the most cogent thing he says in response to your questions is "I got sord." He leads you over to grab a wooden sword lying on the floor and show it to you. You can talk to the human caretaker, the girl of about seven. In response to your questions, she eyes Sunaar timidly and replies that she is very happy, they are very well treated, and she does not want to go anywhere else, than you very much.

Terser also remarks on the expense, but Sunaar shrugs. "Loyalty is not to be discounted," he replies. "And soldiers trained from a very young age will have an advantage over those who are not."

Rill asks specifically which child is Ky. Sunaar frowns. "We can find him for you of course," he says. "But we do have a valid bill of sale for him. I have to ask: how did he come to be sold in a slave market, if he has a mother looking for him?"

Tishe' creates an illusion to comfort the crying child--who had actually stopped crying, but is fascinated by the light show. "Ghee ghaa!" he cries in delight, and tries to grab one of them.

Reggie tries the door and finds it locked. You attempt to break it down, but it is a sturdy door, and is going to need a bit more effort. Or possibly the business end of an axe.

Her eyes flash angrily at Zeoll. "Enough with this subterfuge. We have more than enough to condemn this entire House. If I have to listen to these platitudes another second, I'm going to vomit. Or send him into another plane."

"Master Sunaar, you say that the soldiers are only part of the plan. What is your understanding of the rest of the plan?

"As for the child, please identify this Ky child now. Male, I believe. Since you are planning to reapply a tattoo, I assume you have them all numbered, so that should not be a difficult task.

"His mother? She was also originally sold as a slave. However, she has found ... favor with a rather important personage. She has been freed and his influence extends to her as well. Trust me when I tell you that freeing the child will cost far less than any protest. We convinced her to wait outside, but I am not sure how long she will wait. Now it is Tishe' who is ready to throw down!

Rill would like his companions to think of the children! Terser doesn't say anything, but he is inclined to agree. Jozhur, keen to fight a moment ago, now isn't so sure.

Bralin is always ready, and Zod has his companion return to her true size.

But Zeoll casts an Obscuring Mist to shield the children's eyes from the battle to come. The kids are startled, and a few of them start to cry, but the girl and the butler manage to hustle them all further into the mist.

Sensing that the situation is going south, Sunaar calls out, "Guards, Guards!" You hear running footsteps in the hall, followed by a few short blasts on a signal whistle.

Zeoll then casts Hideous Laughter on Sunaar, and the dark elf doubles over laughing.

With a few well-placed chops, Reggie gets through the door. Ahead of you, you hear the sound of running feet, followed by a few short blasts on a signal whistle. You're not sure what to make of the sounds, but that seems to be where the action is.

[I'll try to put together a map over the weekend.]

Zeoll picks up his shield. He's relying on Jozhur, Bralin, Zod, and Terser to deal with the drow. Or Rill can banish it.

He moves to the now-chopped door and blocks it with his body. Next round he'll use his tower shield to really block the door.

"Reggie!' he says, delighted. "You've arrrived just in time! I think yourr son is in the mist cloud."

"Tishe, any chance of a Passwall to make an unexpected escape rroute?"

Would any of the walls be exterior walls? Tishe' doesn't know, but she is game to find out. "We'll weave something out, Zeoll!", she calls and stands. To the girl she speaks in a matter-of-fact voice, trying to be careful with her Sargrass accent. "Girl, these are bad people and slavery is wrong. Stay near me and wee'll find a good home for you."

She moves to the wall opposite the door and touches the cool stone. With word and gesture, she weaves a Blue level spell; Passwall.

There's a map now. It's not terribly decorative; I went for tactical clarity this time.

Reggie is off the map to the south; she'll need to move before she can get on the map. The big cloud thing is the Obscuring Mist. I haven't placed the noncombatants on the map, but they're still there in the room.

I had to guess at character positions; you may re-position yourself if you like. Except Reggie. :)

Terser hopes to end this drow quickly, if only so that Zeoll can charm the guards and he won't be able to object. He's sure the old taur can spin some plausible tale of why he had to be killed. Maybe. And there's always the hole in the wall if not.

He attacks twice, counting on the fact that his prone opponent cannot dodge too well.

Zeoll picks up his shield and stands athwart the door. He suggests that Tishe' might want to use a Passwal to make an exit.

Jozhur and Terser attack Sunaar and kill him where he stands. Terser yells for someone to grab the documents.

Bralin casts a spell on himself and joins Zeoll.

Tishe', acting on Zeoll's suggestion, casts Passwall. You create an opening in the wall and find dirt and rock on the other side. (You entered on the ground floor, then went downstairs to reach this hallway. You are in the basement.)

Zod tries to get Kunda and the children to follow Tishe', but Tishe' can't get out that way, so the escape stalls.

Reggie runs toward the commotion, and sees a couple of dwarf guards moving to attack somebody through a doorway. As she watches, two more dwarf guards and a couple of human wizards move to join the fight.

With a single sweep of his guisarme, the first dwarf guard attacks Rill, Bralin, and Zeoll. He hits Rill! Rill takes 15 damage. He misses Bralin! He hits Zeoll! Zeoll takes 14 damage. The other dwarf guard steps up. He focuses on Bralin and attempts to sunder his shield. The guisarme swings 3 times, but only hits once. Bralin's shield takes 14 damage--and it appears the weapon is made of adamantine, because the shield's hardness does not protect it. The guard did this so expertly that he provoked no attack of opportunity!

Two more dwarf guards run up to join the fray! But they had to move a long way, so they won't be acting this round. Two human wizards follow them; they also won't be acting this round. (If it matters, it was the red and blue dwarves that acted this round.)

Zod eyes the dirt with a curious look. It would take too long to dig, even if he Wildshaped into an Earth Elemental. He wonders if either of the dwarves might have some insight into tunneling their way out. The stony fighter, Bralin, seems to have some affinity for magic...

With with the scrape of a hoof he turns back to the action as the battle starts in earnest. He peers briefly into the cloud of mist, concerned with so many noncombatants nearby. "Hm.. If taking walls out won't help, let's see about adding a wall of our own." He remarks, smiling, to Tishe'.

The minotaur joins Rill in the center of the room, standing just behind Zeoll. Zod's companion trails a bit behind, losing her Shared spells.

"There's no way out but through!" Zod calls to the others, and casts Wall of Thorns, filling the opposite hall with needle-bearing bushes (red box with the lines in it on the map, extending 10ft further down the hall behind the wizards).

The green guard and both wizards are caught, taking 25 damage minus their Flat-footed AC (Dexterity & Dodge bonuses don't apply). Anyone trapped inside or trying to move through needs to make Strength checks to move, taking the same 25 damage minus AC if they move (or stay still to avoid damage).

Then the old liontaur uses a standard action to hold his mighty tower shield up for total cover. Zeoll's CMD vs sunders is a 19, or 21 if they are evil. His +4 Darkwood Tower Shield has Hardness 23 and 90 hp ... and note that usually admantine only ignores hardness less than 20.

Finally, the Cleric of Maab winks at Bralin and uses a move action to go invisible! [OOC: Fey Domain's Hide Away power.] I'm hoping that gives Zeoll a 50% miss chance in addition to his total cover. And unless the mages can see invisible, maybe they cannot target Zeoll or his shield without LoS. Area spells will still smart, of course.

Zeoll calls out to Tishe, using Bluff to get his words across without giving away the game ... Bluff check 34, a-ok ... Tishe, can you angle another one up to the surface, maybe?

Last round, Rill cast Shield of Faith. This round, he casts Prayer.

Zod puts up a Wall of Thorns.

Zeoll asks Bralin to step aside, which the dwarf obligingly does. Zeoll then puts up his tower shield, and very sportingly turns invisible so the enemy wizards have line of sight into the room.

Reggie double moves.

Tishe' is disappointed by the Passwall thing, but quickly rallies and readies to counter the wizards.

Which is interesting, because the first wizard attempts to Dispel Magic the Wall of Thorns. So Tishe' tries to Dispel his Dispel, and now my head hurts. But here's the thing. You can counter a spell by casting that same spell, and that succeeds automatically, with no check required. And by pure happenstance, Tishe' is casting the same spell, so it automatically succeeds. I think. Anyway, that's how I'm ruling it.

The second wizard then attempts to Dispel the Wall of Thorns, and succeeds.

"The kitty's disappeared!" one of the guards says. "Let's see if we can smoke him out, lads" Three of the guards retrieve items and throw them at the doorway where they last saw Zeoll. One throws a jar of some kind. It hits Zeoll's shield (even with a 50% miss chance) and bursts, Two different liquids inside begin to spread over the surface of the shield. The next two, obviously traditionalists, throw some Alchemist Fire. Zeoll has cover from the worst of it, but does take a point of splash damage from each (2 points total).

The remaining guard attacks Reggie. Hi swings his guisarme three times, but only hits twice. Reggie takes 30 damage from two hits.

Rill can tell that the wizards did take damage from the Wall of Thorns. He casts Blindness on one of the wizards, but the mage shrugs it off [Fort save 23].

Zod casts Barkskin on himself and, after some negotiation with Zeoll squeezes in next to the door frame.

Zeoll renews his invisibility and his total cover.

Tishe' casts a Resilient Sphere, but the mage doges and the spell fizzles [Reflex save 30]. She readies a counterspell because she can do that as a move action, and oh man, I am so jealous!

Bralin takes Zeoll up on his invitation and saunters out into the hallway past three attacks of opportunity because that's how dwarves roll. :) None of the attacks even come close.

The alchemical components that were splashed on Zeoll's shield last round explode! Zeoll and Zod each take a point of sonic damage. Zeoll is deafened for 3 rounds, and must succeed at a DC 12 Fort save or become stunned for a round.

Each of the guards makes a whirlwind attack! Bralin is hit once for 13 damage. Zeoll is hit three times for no damage, thanks to total cover. Zod is hit twice for a total of 28 damage. Reggie is hit once for 12 damage.

The yellow wizard begins casting a spell, and Tishe' attempts to counter it. Unfortunately, her attempt isn't strong enough, and the Maximized Fireball gets through. Zeoll, Zod, Jozhur, Rill, Terser, and possibly Tishe' take 60 damage, Reflex save DC 21 for half. [I don't see Tishe' on the map; am I just getting old and senile?] The pink wizard begins casting a spell of his own. Terser attempts to counter it with a bull rush. He shoves the wizard back against the alcove wall, and does some damage, but alas, not enough to disrupt the spell. Waves of Fatigue wash over Zeoll, Zod, Terser, Jozhur, Reggie, and possibly Tishe', who all become fatigued.

And the map.

Zod smiles at the sonic damage, mind wandering to the components involved. He leans in behind Zeoll's shield, to make a quip to the Captain, and avoids the full heat of the flames (Reflex save 29; +1 Prayer, +2 Zeoll's Cradled Stories on the Lionfish).

Severely wounded by the dwarves' tactics with reach weapons and clearly fatigued, he gives the old taur a reassuring pat on the shoulder, before turning and seeming to almost walk into the wall. His hooves meld into the surrounding stone, and his features turn to rocks and gems. Halfway Earth Glided into the wall, he turns and places a hand on Rill's shoulder "No more half measures." His voice rumbles from the roughly minotaur-shaped mass of stone, "Can you heal us, then take them over? I'm going through the wall. Else Zeoll may need looking after for a moment. He took a big one there."

Delaying my move action, if I may.

"Got it Zod!"

As the fire washes over the group, Rill reaches deep within himself to resist the effect (uses hero point before the roll - good thing too, as he barely made it.)

Then he cleric releases a wash of healing energy that covers all by Bralin (too far) and the enemies (Elective Channeling.) All are healed for 30 points!

Then he will teleport Terser, Jozhur and Rill near the wizards, and then takes a step back.

Zeoll makes himself invisible again, and moves out of the doorway to take a little breather. [OOC: Zeoll is deafened, not dazed, so he can move; he just can't hear anybody. :) ]

Bralin's attack from last round did hit [Sorry, I totally missed that]. He attacks twice this round, hitting once--can you roll damage next time?

Luckily, Reggie raged last round. Indeed, as a mama looking to reclaim her only son, she's pretty much been raging all the way up here. But now she does it to effect! And she attacks one of the guards! She hits and does damage! But the guard is still standing!

Zod changes into an elemental and avoids attacks of opportunity by moving through the wall!

Rill teleports himself, Jozhur, and Terser out into the hall.

Jozhur attacks one of the guards, trying to catch him off-guard, but misses.

Terser attacks the mage and hits twice.

The red guard attacks Bralin, trying to sunder his shield. He succeeds, and Brain's shield takes 16 damage--adamantine weapon ignores hardness. The purple mage steps back and does a whirlwind attack, targeting Bralin and Reggie. Both are hit; Bralin takes 16 damage and Reggie takes 12 damage.

The blue guard does a whirlwind attack, targeting Jozhur and Terser. He misses Terser, but Jozhur takes 13 damage. The green guard attacks Rill three times, hitting once for 16 damage.

The pink wizard casts a spell (casting defensively) Spellcraft DC 19 Highlight to display spoiler: {Greater Invisibility} He vanishes.

The yellow wizard casts a spell. Spellcraft DC 22 Highlight to display spoiler: {Delayed Blast Fireball}, and a ball of fire erupts, catching Rill, Jozhur, and Terser. They take 35 damage, DC 25 Reflex save for half.

Zod steps through the wall. With a smile composed of black, semi-reflective igneous rock, the earthen minotaur raises his stony fists. "My turn." he says before a flurry of blows against the Purple Dwarf (vs AC 19, 25, 15; forgot Earth Mastery in rolls, includes Fatigue, Wildshape, & Prayer). Most likely bouncing off his armor, but if one gets through Purple Dwarf takes 13 damage.

Kunda charges the Red Dwarf, moving the minimum 10ft and stopping before the doorway to attack with reach. Misses with a nat 1. (Forgot to fix header - Shield of Faith boosted Rill's AC to 27. Also, there were people between Rill and the Dwarf that hit him. Unless he had something that allows him to ignore cover, soft cover should provide Rill a +4 AC bonus, boosting it to AC 31?)

Rill fails the reflex save as fire again scorches the cleric. Then some rotten dwarf hits him. He once again releases a burst of healing energy, healing all but Tishe for 22 points, but not healing our enemies..

Rill says, "I've about had enough of these guys."

He steps back 5 feet and uses a Hero Point to create a Blade Barrier that should greatly complicate things for these opposing guards and wizards. Whirling blades of force spring to life in a tight circle around the purple dwarf. While this will not harm the purple dwarf, it will harm all squares surrounding him. It will also prevent the purple dwarf from attacking out of his space. (46 damage, DC 23 Reflex save for half.)

(This will cause those affected by the whirling blades to move into an available square, possibly provoking AOOs in the process.)

Rill says to the guards, "See, you're not the only ones with whirling blades. I suggest you surrender - Sunaar is dead and our quarrel is not with you. At least not yet.
It only gets worse from here."

---------------------------------
Blade Barrier - An immobile, vertical curtain of whirling blades shaped of pure force springs into existence. Any creature passing through the wall takes 1d6 points of damage per caster level (maximum 15d6), with a Reflex save for half damage.

If you evoke the barrier so that it appears where creatures are, each creature takes damage as if passing through the wall. Each such creature can avoid the wall (ending up on the side of its choice) and thus take no damage by making a successful Reflex save.

A blade barrier provides cover (+4 bonus to AC, +2 bonus on Reflex saves) against attacks made through it.

Tishe[ casts a Glitterdust, revealing the pink wizard again. He is not blinded, but his is now both pink and sparkly which means I want him for my Barbie collection.

Zod finishes stepping through the wall and attacks the purple guard, hitting once.

Rill heals his friends, then casts a Blade Barrier around the purple guard. The purple and green guards are not affected. The red guard makes his save; the blue guard does not. Both can get out of the barrier with a 5-foot step, which does not provoke. Both wizards make their saves, but they have to move farther in order to escape the blades. The yellow wizard provokes from Zod, and the pink wizard provokes from Jozhur and Terser. Terser was good enough to roll an AoO in his post, so he's the one who finishes off the sparkly pink wizard,

One down!

Zeoll begins summoning a fey friend. Remember that you are still deaf, so the spell has a 20% failure chance if it includes a verbal component.

Bralin steps back for a moment.

Terser wants to continue attacking the mage, but he is already down. Instead, Terser attacks the green guard, who's starting to look a little chewed up. It is perhaps fitting that Reggie is the one who finishes him off.

Two down!

Jozhur's sneak attack is not needed; that corner of the alcove is pretty well cleared out.

The blue guard attacks Zod three times, hitting once for 11 damage. The red guard attacks Reggie three times, hitting all three times including one critical hit! Reggie takes 78 points of damage!

The purple guard has to try to attack through the Blade Barrier, so he chooses to lob another alchemical item. He lobs it at Jozhur, and hits, despite the blade barrier! The small bag explodes into a mass of sticky goop. Jozhur must make a DC 15 Reflex save or be stuck to the floor, unable to move. If you save, you still move at half speed and take a -2 penalty to attack rolls and a -4 penalty to Dexterity. But this appears to be more than an ordinary Tanglefoot bag! The sticky goop bursts into flame! Jozhur takes 5 points of fire damage, and must succeed at a DC 20 Reflex save or catch on fire!

The sparkly pink wizard has gone to the Barbie Malibu Dream House in the sky, but the yellow wizard is still active! He concentrates, trying to cast a spell without provoking further Attacks of Opportunity! He succeeds! A sheet of fire bursts from his outstretched hands; Zod and Bralin take 20 points of fire damage, DC 19 Reflex save for half.

And the map.

Zod eyes the whirling Blade Barrier warily, heaving a sigh like a collapsing mud-bank as the defenders scatter and fall, only to be hit by the guards' blades and spells (Reflex 14; 31 damage total).

As the Yellow Wizard maneuvers around the deadly force blades, Zod leans over and catches the man's knee, attempting to trip him. CMB 37 vs CMD (+1 Prayer, +1 Earth Mastery); knocking him prone. Provokes an AoO from the Yellow Wizard, if he's armed (Zod's AoO last round).

Giving Bralin an almost-apologetic shrug, Zod turns his attention to the Red Guard, with another Flurry.
First attack hits AC 31 for 12 damage; Second, nat 20, confirms crit vs AC 27 for 21 damage, or 40 damage if crit confirms.

As he steps in and brings an elbow down heavily on the dwarf's shoulder, Zod checks the children's room, and peers around the Blade Barrier to see Reggie, Terser, and Jozhur deal with their side quite handily. "There's wisdom in the stones and the earth." Zod says, "But a bit less pleasure in its musk - let's clear the way and get these children free!"

Tishe' smiles in grim satisfaction; the plain woman has had many battles and companions, and is confident in this group's abilities and demeanor. The spellweaver has few spells that are able to strike with precision, and so leaves the melee to the experts.

As for the slaver Wizard, Tishe' quips "At least I'm not exhausted", she says around a yawn, and moves so she can see the Wizard but as far from the slaver dwarves reach weapons as possible.

And then she Readies a Counterspell.

The large plant appears next to the big snake, and reaches across it (10 ft reach) to smack at the Red Guard with two slams, hitting AC24 and AC22. [Does Kunda offer the target soft cover?] If those slams hit, they do 14 and 14 damage. There's a grab option too, but given the tight quarters, the shambler is happy to pass on that for now.

Zod managed to trip the yellow wizard, but the wizard was still able to get off his spell. Now Zod moves to unload a couple of wicked hits on the red guard, but the dwarf is still standing!

Jozhur managed to avoid being set on fire, but he is not as nimble as he usually is, so his movement provokes an Attack of Opportunity from the blue guard. It hits! Jozhur takes 15 damage. Jozhur's attack also hits! The guard takes sneak attack damage, but does not seem to be evil.

Tishe' readies a Counterspell. She looks around, but there don't seem to be any more guards approaching.

Rill heals his companions.

Zeoll summons a Shambling Mound, which proceeds to lay down the smack on the red guard. Wanting more friends, Zeoll begins summoning again. You are still deaf.

Terser attacks twice, but his blows do not land.

Bralin attacks the wizard, hitting once.

Reggie attacks the blue guard, hitting twice.

The red guard does a whirlwind attack, targeting Zeoll's shambling mound, Jozhur, and Reggie. Jozhur is hit for 16 damage; Reggie is hit for 13 damage. Assuming the shambling mound is a normal, ordinary shambling mound, it got hit for 17 damage.

The blue guard attacks Zod three times, hitting once for 17 damage.

The purple guard reaches for another alchemical item. This time it is a small bottle, which the points at Rill before uncorking. A single lightning bolt sizzles through the Blade Barrier, hitting Rill despite the barrier's protection. Rill takes 8 points of damage. Rill, Reggie, and Terser must succeed at DC 15 Reflex saves or take 1 point of sonic damage from the resulting thunderclap!

The yellow wizard is prone and doesn't much like it, but he knows standing up will be even worse, so he stays where he is. He casts defensively, and succeeds in getting his spell off. Reggie grass one of the guards to start interrogating him, a process continued a bit more calmly by Rill. The guards give you their names [I will make up names if you absolutely insist on it], and say they were hired by Jonos Aerdhuryn to guard this wing. Rill asks them if they knew about the children, and the guards shrug.

Reggie hurries into the room where the children have been kept, hoping to find her son. She finds the corpse of a dark elf, papers strewn about, a fair amount of blood, and a large cloud of mist. Tishe' seems to be trying to talk to whoever's in the mist, but it's not going well. You can hear several children crying.

Zeoll begins singing a song, and that seems to help. It's difficult to tell for sure, of course, because all the kids are still in the mist cloud.

The rest of the group has shifted to logistical questions. Zod is in favor of a thorough exploration of this wing; Terser and Bralin are more concerned with how you're going to get all these kids down to the Lionfish.

Tishe' is thankful that Zeoll starts singing, and twits herself for not thinking about performing with her drums as a way to settle the kids, but her attention is grabbed by Reggie.

"Oh, good, you made it!", she exclaims, then in a softer voice, "They are removing the bodies before removing the fog. It'll only be another minute before we can see if Ky is among them. There are a couple dozen half-orc toddlers plus a young human girl nanny. I'm thinking we gather them all up and parade down to the ship." She excuses herself from Reggie's presence and moves to the hallway to help sort, tag, and bag the rightful spoils of battle.

The mixed alchemical items are quite interesting, but the spellweaver has no expertise in them, and she is afraid they may be volatile. "If they are stable, they may be very good things for us to give Tula as defensive weapons for the LionFish." Likewise, the spellbook is unusable for Tishe', as is most of the gathered goods where she has better or different items already for the appropriate body slots. "One set of bracers would help defend me in case of a surprise assault where there isn't enough time for a Mage Armor spell."

And then, her attention is captured by yet another piece of information, the location of the Wizard's work rooms. When the dwarf points the direction again, Tishe' will move there and check out the rooms with her See Invisible and her spell-like ability: Detect Magic.

You pack away the loot, and drag the bodies down the hall a ways so they won't upset the children. Well, so they won't upset the children any more. Once the bodies are out of the way, Zeoll dismisses the Obscuring Mist, and you can see the children. And they can see you.

Now that you're no longer distracted, you can get a headcount, and you can tell that there are 11 half-orc toddlers, something less than the couple dozen [i]Tishe'[/b] had estimated, but in her defense, they were making an awful lot of noise. The human girl makes a total of 12 children.

The toddlers are upset and frightened because everything was loud and scary, and because the girl who takes care of them was frightened, and they picked up on it. They can be soothed, although it takes a while. Reggie cannot tell by just looking at them which one is Ky; they're all of a similar age, and while they're not identical, they look enough alike that it's difficult to tell which one is the child she hasn't seen since he was an infant.

The girl is old enough to understand what was happening, and she is terrified. Of you. It's true that the people who owned her didn't treat her very well, but they didn't treat her very badly either, and now you've slaughtered a bunch of them, and she's pretty sure she's next. She cowers against the wall, whimpering. Anytime one of you approaches, she cries, "No, please, please, no!" and flinches away.

Some of you head down the hall to examine the room where the wizards had been working. It's easy to spot because you find the door standing open. Inside you find a square room with a large square table in the center. Two chairs are drawn up to the table, and pens, ink pots, and papers lay jumbled on its surface. The specifics of the papers are difficult to make out, though one of them is clearly labeled "FORMULA FOR TANGLEBURN BAGS."

Along the walls are shelves holding various bottles and jars, most empty, a few containing ingredients. There are also countertop workstations.

Two human men are in the room, one washing out bottles in a small basin, the other measuring powder out of a small bag into tiny jars. They look up, startled, as you come in. They are wearing simple clothing, and one man's sleeve is short enough that you can see the slave tattoo on his upper arm.

WHAT IS NET NEUTRALITY?

Net neutrality is the basic principle that protects our free speech on the Internet. "Title II" of the Communications Act is what provides the legal foundation for net neutrality and prevents Internet Service Providers like Comcast, Verizon, and AT&T from slowing down and blocking websites, or charging apps and sites extra fees to reach an audience (which they then pass along to consumers.)

The Internet has thrived precisely because of net neutrality. It's what makes it so vibrant and innovative—a place for creativity, free expression, and exchange of ideas. Without net neutrality, the Internet will become more like Cable TV, where the content you see is what your provider puts in front of you.

Terser has some belated concern about legal liability, but luckily Tishe''s plan will not burn down the house. Instead, she shatters all the glass in the former alchemy lab, making quite a mess.

Rill heals his companions, and dismisses the butler with a few choice words about things the butler really didn't have any control over.

Tishe' adds some words about the difference between legal and moral.

Zeoll picks up two of the toddlers.

Terser and Bralin manage to get three more toddlers onto the tower shield.

Reggie, at long last, reunites with the son she hasn't seen since he was a baby. "Mommie's here," she tells him. "Hi, Mommie," he responds cheerfully, although he doesn't seem to know what "mommie" means. He'll learn soon enough, though.

Meanwhile, Jozhur, Tishe', and Zod try to encourage the toddlers to walk along with the group. They seem more or less amenable to the idea, but they are toddlers and they don't walk so good yet. You can either go very slowly and be very patient, or you can pick them up and carry them.

Without being asked, the two freed slaves from the alchemy lab each pick up a toddler. Assuming Reggie carries Ky, that leaves three toddlers to be carried by the remaining four adventurers, so I'll assume that happens.

God leads the way back through the side door that Reggie conveniently smashed open. You make your way back to the cliff stairs without incident. Do you want to make any preparations before you descend?

Also, I have an in with the church of Gargul in Bonetown, and they serve the poor and downtrodden. There may be some that want to make a fresh start. Tishe' is able to repair Bralin's shield.

Reggie, of course, has eyes only for her son. He seems healthy enough, and he can walk and speak very short sentences. He and the other toddlers are all fascinated with the Lionfish, which they demonstrate by running around underfoot and coming very close to tumbling overboard. The crew aren't sure what to make of the new passengers.

Jozhur asks the two men if there's anywhere they want to go. One says yes; he would like to return to his town and see what has become of his family. The other doesn't seem to have any specific place he wants to be.

Zod reminds his companions that first things need to come first, and that means rescuing Madra's children. Madra enthusiastically endorses this proposal. He ponders some way to rig the ship so that the part with the kids can detatch as needed to let the other part, the fighting part, head into danger. Figuring that out would be quite an enterprise, which would ensure the safety of the next generation.

Reggie tries to teach the half-orc tots about sailing, but they're still pretty little for that level of complexity. You are able to impart some basic safety rules, like "stay off the ladders," and "don't mess with the knots," but lessons on the value of hard work and order are going to have to wait a year or two.

Zod attempts to ride herd on the children, with limited success.

Actually, your greatest allies in child-wrangling prove to be Madra and the little slave girl. Madra has experience with young children, and although she misses her own, she is willing to pitch in and help. The slave girl, for her part, seems to have developed a genuine affection for her young charges, and continues to take responsibility for them--a situation that concerns Madra. "She's too young to take on so much, poor thing," Madra says. "She's not much more than a baby herself. I asked her what her name was, and she said it was Girl. Can you imagine?"

The rest of you are trying to figure out what Comeri means. Tula capably sails the Lionfish to a medium-sized port in Fargunia. Asking around, Zeoll is able to determine that it is a very small island in the Middle Seas. Armed with this information, you are able to find it on the navigation charts. Presence and general number of people on the islands and surrounding seas. If the islands have any of what Johzur, Terser, or Bralin say people would be mining.

After the 10 minute casting time and brief parlay with Maab's domain, Zod tells the others what he finds.

Commune With Nature: You become one with nature, attaining knowledge of the surrounding territory. You instantly gain knowledge of as many as three facts from among the following subjects: the ground or terrain, plants, minerals, bodies of water, people, general animal population, presence of woodland creatures, presence of powerful unnatural creatures, or even the general state of the natural setting.

In outdoor settings, the spell operates in a radius of 1 mile per caster level. In natural underground settings—caves, caverns, and the like—the spell is less powerful, and its radius is limited to 100 feet per caster level. The spell does not function where nature has been replaced by construction or settlement, such as in dungeons and towns.
