Lanliss tells the others he hears what may be the end of a fight.

Velarin worries that the clearing may be a trap. Copied from yesterday’s DM post: “Reviewing what he knows about planes and their implications on casting magnificent mansion, he concludes that it is likely to function normally in Koshe Marr.”

Emrys speculates the sounds could be that of a blacksmith or a form of communication. No discernible code is identified.

Edson hears nothing and worries that this place could be messing with them..

Trap or no trap, Barratore leads the way, banner proudly flying.

Tishe’ continues along, deep in thought.





The adventures cross the clearing with no incident, the track continuing its gentle rise as it courses through the forest. As they travel on, the smell of smoke gradually increases and the occasional rumble of distant thunder continues. Periodically, the ring of metal on metal resumes, loud enough for all to hear. The repetitive rings followed by periods of silence, is very likely that of someone working metal.

Perhaps an hour passes before, once again, the forest clears, providing another look at the sky. The clouds continue and as before with no apparent sign of imminent rain.

Rather than a deficiency in soil or water, this clearing is obviously the result of lumbering. Stumps are evident, some having been cut some time ago, poking through the short grass covering this expanse.

Approximately two miles ahead, the source of the smell is visible. On the outer edge of what appears to be a sizable town, smoke rises in a silvery plume from the chimney of a small stone building. Surrounding this building are well organized piles of lumber. The periodic ring clearly comes from within.

This structure is but one of many. It is closest to the forest, but by no means does it stand alone. It marks the edge of many bright colored buildings, each, it appears, painted a bright and unique color. No pattern to the colors is visible, but each is vivid and almost garish, a stark contrast to the dreary gray of the former mist left behind or the ubiquitous clouds above.

Before long someone steps out of the stone building, removes something from the lean-to at its side and returns back inside. Soon after this, the metal ringing resumes. Beyond this, the road the Keepers are on branches out. It is not completely abandoned though, as has been the case so far within the forest; an occasional person or small group can be seen going from building to building, apparently on some personal business of some sort.

Another dirt track extending from the town leads to the clearing approximately two hundred yards right of where the road the Keepers are on enters the town. On this dirt trail, heading into the field, and toward the Keepers, appears to be a sizable flock of sheep tended by several humanoid shepherds.


At this point, no one in the town, including the sheep and their tenders, appears to have noticed the group of strangers standing at the edge of the forest.

Tishe’ continues deep I thought, wrestling the little thoughts that keep her remembering the near-paralyzing fear those big wolves instilled in the Keepers. This is not a place to stand out, she thinks, for it would only lead to getting noticed by progressively more powerful beings until the souls is trapped forever.

The thought doesn’t do her mood or silence any good.

"Do we avoid the town, or go in? i'm not sure which would be best. How do we ask directions to the castle of Marteus with out letting anyone know we are going to the castle of Marteus? Perhaps we should quickly back into the woods before we are spotted, and determine our next move."

"An invisible airborne view of the area may point us in the direction we are going. And if it's Edson or Lanliss, they could sneak into town after and get a lay of things before we avoid it or go in. We have to remember that stealth is part of our mission."

The elf looks towards the town, it seemed peaceful enough... but thats what made this whole thing weird,

Tishe’ continues, recalling the deep fear she experienced when facing the wolves.

Lanliss quietly discusses the challenges of disguising them all.

Velarin raises the question of approaching or avoiding the town and suggests an invisible aerial reconnaissance.

Edson, being invisible, proposes he be the one to do the exploration, all the while being disturbed by the incongruous peaceful appearance of the town.

Emrys and Barratore carefully watch the edge of town.


While the Keepers quietly discuss what to do, a beautiful voice begins to sing,

”O shepherd, O shepherd, will you come home,
Will you come home, will you come home?
O shepherd, O shepherd, will you come home
To your breakfast this morning?”


The singer, the rearmost of the shepherds, has a hauntingly melodic soprano voice. The language is common Woldian, but with an unrecognizable accent.

In answer, another of the shepherds, also quite talented, but with a strong baritone, responds,

”What have you got for my breakfast,
For my breakfast, for my breakfast?
What have you got for my breakfast
If I do come home this morning?”


This song continues between the two singers as they and the other shepherds lead their sheep further into the field.

They continue to be unaware of the Keepers watching from the edge of the woods.

Barratore snorts, there was being cautious and there was this. He snorts again at Lanliss, "And there's no way we're even gonna try." he answers with a bare tooth grin.

"We are looking for the Inn, the one spoke of by Merry Berry Pip the halfling that V went to chat with. Why not go in ask it's whereabouts. It's the only safe location we know of in the entire realm and we are not going to stumble on it wandering about without anyone noticing us. We don't want to be found, but no one is looking specifically for us either."

The group though, looked to have other ideas and with that, Barratore sits down. and leans against a tree. "Peculiar light in this realm. Shines above the clouds like the sun, but doesn't seem to move, more like being in a giant artificial habitat with a light high above shining into it. Wonder when the lantern will be shuddered and plunge us into darkness?"

"Didn't Murphy say that the Inn moves around? If we find it before we get the item from Marteus's castle, it may have moved. I thought we had other ways to get out besides relying on the inn? We have plane shift, and we have the cube thing that they noble couple gave us that we keyed to outside the gate. Do we really need to find the inn?"

Barratore prefers action and reminds the others of the inn they heard about, but waits for a consensus, resting against a tree.

Lanliss defers to the direct minded minotaur.

Tishe’ agrees with Barratore.

Velarin is not certain that it is yet time to find the inn.

Emrys and Edson quietly await the decision.


The two voices continue with their call and response as the flocks are driven along. The song tells of a shepherd who is too busy to come home for breakfast, lunch, or supper.

Distant thunder continues to rumble, providing a bass accompaniment to the melodic voices of the two shepherds. As the last notes of the song fade, the bleating of their charges, along with the distant rumbling, are the only sounds to be heard.

It is becoming apparent that should the flocks continue in their present course, they should be close enough to notice the Keepers in several minutes.

Emrys is amazed by the stark contrast of this peaceful and pastoral scene and the horrific bloodbath from which they just came. The difference is quite jarring to his psyche and he isn't sure he should trust his senses at the moment.

Barratore, even while seated can clearly see the approaching shepards and the flocks and he was pretty sure that Lanliss was correct.

"Agreed Lanliss, so if you want to stroll up and say hello in a less intimidating manor than I, I suggest you and Edson skip on out and turn on the charm. Perhaps take Tishe with you. Travelling with friends and all that who are back at the tree line so as not to make to obtrusive of a presence and perhaps be directed to an inn? Just spit balling, you guys are the pros, go be all you can be. The guy who looks like he is going to twist off their heads and eat the sheep will stay right here."

Barratore gives a gentle wave off in the direction towards town. Point back and I'll give a nice wave, promise"

V listens to Barratore's suggestion to Lanliss, and gives a sort of shoulder shrug as if to say "why not?" and waits to see how this goes.

V chimes in a bit sarcastically "Hopefully the sheep aren't well disguised death machines, ready to rip everyone limb from limb." and then adds in seriously "Although I have heard of a rabbit that was very deadly."

Emrys ponders the contrast between the current site and what they just passed through.

Lanliss predicts the shepherds will be coming near the trees.

Barratore proposes a peaceful parley by the more winsome in their party.

Velarin agrees and wonders about sheep with nasty, big, pointy teeth.

Edson ends his invisibility and offers to accompany Lanliss.

Tishe’ stands back and lets the two go forward.


As Lanliss and Edson advance, it does not take long for the shepherds to notice the pair. Perhaps they hesitate upon first seeing them, but if they do, they recover quickly. The closest, a man of perhaps middle age, is dressed in a serviceable tunic and leggings with sturdy leather boots. His dark brown hair is straight and cut to just below his ears. He sports a short, well trimmed beard that bears a hint of silver. Incongruent with his profession, his skin is not tanned as would be expected of one who sends most of his time outdoors. A quick glance confirms that this is true of all the others with him.

He nods politely and with a shout and a gesture to his coworkers, he directs them to lead the sheep around to his left, giving the visitors, once the sheep have responded, an unimpeded path to the town.

Tishe’ keeps watch, wondering what new nightmare may come from the shepherds, fields, or forest. To say that the wolves in the woods had not affected her would be untrue. Still, she thinks to herself, the moment had passed, and the world was as it was. No, she reminds herself, not the Wold, the Nightmare Realm of the diseased one. She remembers and watches.

Lanliss nods back in greeting to the shepherd.

Tishe’ watches carefully, but sees nothing to indicate anything other than a town undergoing a normal day with shepherds taking their flocks out to graze.

Velarin also watches.

Barratore keeps watch against a tree. He notices nothing amiss.

Emrys stands ready to heal Edson again.

Edson approaches, but does not engage the shepherds.



Each shepherd, as they draw nearer, smile and nod. They seem to be paying special attention to their charges so that none of the sheep get in the way of the two strangers.

The distant thunder continues. The gray clouds wander across the sky, slowly rolling over and into themselves. There is still no sign of rain. The town continues to appear peaceful, calm, and have the typical amount of activity for a late afternoon.

Edson nods to the Shepards, " Beautiful day, huh? " he asks. If they stop and talk, he'll stop.. otherwise he follows Lanliss' lead and heads towards town.

" Whats the plan?" He asks his fellow rogue in thieves talk.

Lanliss laughs only to realize that he didn't have a clue .
Rather it was a hunch a gut feeling.
" I think the big one(Barratore) is right....this place seems time safe(safe for the moment)", Lanliss responds.
'But nothing in this place....will give us safety' , he thinks as he seems scared of the possibility that things are not as they seem to be but finds himself saying.
"Plan is simple, find out where we here and learn about this place then find where we are headed",Lanliss says, after "plans can change all the time" Lanliss says emphasizing that the plan or their situation can change any moment.
'How in such horror..... people can live like this', he thinks somberly.

He doesn't tell Edson about this little fear gnawing in his heart a sort paranoia.

Edson speaks to a shepherd and asks Lanliss for a plan as they continue into town.

Lanliss struggles with his own fear and states that the plan is to learn what they can about the town.

Tishe’ watches and considers the thunder. After a bit, she concludes it seems natural enough and not likely to affect her personally, at least not anytime soon.

Velarin keeps an alert eye out and sees nothing of note.

Emrys and Barratore wait for their scouts to finish.




The shepherd nods back to Edson and replies with a smile, “Yes, Yes, it is”. Maintaining his smile, he continues to direct the sheep out of their way.

As Edson and Lanliss, get closer to the edge of town, they continue to hear the periodic ringing from the smith’s shack. Soon the originator of that sound steps out. A middle aged dwarf, sooty and sweat covered, takes off a leather gauntlet before wiping his brow as he walks toward a bin under a lean-to to the side of the stone building. He stops mid step as he notices the two strangers. “Hello,” he says cautiously, “are you in need of some metal work?” His eyes scan the pair, obviously surveying their equipment. His gaze hesitates twice, first when he notices Edson’s chain shirt and then again when it spots his two kukris.

Barratore quashes an urge to spring to his feet and rush the sheep to watch them scatter, and instead simply chuckles at the thought.

He gets more comfortable, the others are and always have been better at noticing things and so he decides to thumb one in the face of this place.

Barratore eases back into the tree, wriggles his shoulders back to a comfortable slant, closes his eyes and and just takes in the fresh smell, breeze through the leaves and relaxes.

Finished with the charade, Edson puts up his hands. " Oh, no thank you Dear Dwarf. I'm Elmont and this is my friend Leonard. We're a little mixed with our wanderings and seem to be lost. We're looking to meet with our friends at an Inn... Harrowed Moon in I think we were told. But, we seem to continue missing the path. I'll tell you what, if you can put us on the right path, I'd have no problem buying somethung for a friend. As a gift. Perhaps a nose ring? About this big.. (motions for a minotaur sized ring)... "

Tishe' envies Barratorre's easy acceptance of the moment: the sorceress has never been able to do that, and this place hasn't made her more at ease. Her mercurial attention makes her eyes flit from one thing to another, hoping against hope that she doesn't detect anyone using divination in the Keeper's area.

Noticing Barratore's lack of regard for the situation, he feels a bit of jealousy. Knowing that if someone does get the jump on you, and not worrying about it because you can withstand it must be a relaxing state. He, on the other hand, couldn't afford to let anyone get the jump on him, as it may end him quickly.

He does whisper to the others, "Perhaps following this little info gathering venture, it would be a good time to rest and recover spells. I've used quite a few, and Emrys was throwing heals around like a cleric"

The dwarf listens attentively as “Elmont” speaks. He bows humbly and says, “Well met, Lord Elmont and Lord Leonard. I am Brocken, the best smith in town and I would be delighted to make this ring for you, good sir, but I need to let you know that I mostly work in iron and bronze.”
At the mention of the Harrowed Moon, he shakes his head and explains, “I can’t say I have heard of it, sir. In fact, there are no inns at all here in Unity, though there are several fine taverns.” After a moment, he beckons you inside with a friendly gesture, “Now tell me more about this ring you would like me to make for your friend.”

As the pair turn away, he adds, “If it’s a tavern you’re looking for, I recommend Bungo’s just down the street. He taps a fine keg and sometimes let’s the customers drink a bit. Keep on this road and look for the blue building with orange trim and the sign with a mug on it. Be sure and tell ol’ Bungo that Brocken sent you.”

He watches you depart for some time before he returns back to his building.

Lanliss speculates that the children are curious of them and that the citizens of Unity appear to be unaccustomed to travelers. He also worries about being prompted to lower his guard.

Edson thanks the blacksmith. He covertly conjectures that the children may be demons in disguise. He proposes splitting up and himself continuing invisibly.

Velarin notices the two figures near Edson and Lanliss. He then becomes invisible and flies straight up.

Tishe’ accepts Velarins proposal and keeps a watchful eye.

Barratore keeps an eye on the shepherds.

Edson and Lanliss
Nothing much happens. It is not too difficult for Edson to ditch and turn invisible. Both see what one would expect in a town in mid afternoon. More traffic ahead, people going to and fro--and, singing. It appears that the people in Unity sure seem to sing a lot. Happy, merry songs, many of the “whistle while you work” variety.

He estimates the population to be in the two thousand to three thousand range based on the number of buildings. Immediately noticeable is how vibrantly colorful the buildings are. As he flies overhead, he notes that several buildings are, in fact, in the process of being repainted. Other than watching where Edson and Lanliss went, apparently out of curiosity, the shepherds continue to drive their sheep. Their detour around the pair has taken them a bit farther from those by the trees. There is no indication that they notice anyone other than those two.

New information No matter where Velarin looked, he saw no sign of a keep or major structure other than the amphitheatre. Some buildings do appear to be larger than others, but most likely this is an reflection of the affluence of the owner rather than an indication of some larger purpose.

The town itself is surrounded by fields, some cultivated, some in grass. These fields are themselves surrounded by forest. This forest stretches as far as the eye can see in every direction, fading into mist across the gloomy horizon.

In addition to the road the Keepers are on, there are two others leading away from the town. All three roads are primarily dirt tracks with each one disappearing into the woods. Approximately equidistant from each other, no road seems more significant than the others.

Lanliss is able to stay out of view despite their being a typical bustle of activity. The two children are no longer around, perhaps they wandered off after no longer having strangers to watch.

The shepherds continue with their business, their flocks finally allowed to graze. Before long another song breaks out among them. Another call and response, but with different voices this time. The lyrics speak of warm fires, strong ale, and lovely women.

Nothing much else appears to be happening.



What will the Keepers do: continue to wait here and watch, set up camp, go into town, go somewhere else, or perhaps some other course of action?

Barratore agreed, but there was also part of the story of people just trying to live as well. ‘We were attacked at night, in the woods. Perhaps in the day, out of the fog and wood, it is relatively safe. Perhaps these people have some bargain or understanding. Also, one cannot terrorize and inflict pain and distress if you simply kill them all. They must live and have a sense of safety in some small measure. Then,”. Barratore shrugs, “there has been a great shake up in the divine. New gods risen or returned, at least 2 destroyed, a pantheon no longer. Things are different now

The town is a town, I’m walking in to talk to the people”

Barratore straightens, sets his shield banner to float before him and strides down the road towards the town. He raises his right arm and gives a friendly wave towards the shepherds as he does so

Tishe’ looks at Emrys as Barratorre stands and moves out. “We don’t have our telepathy link magic here, Sieurs Edson and Lanliss left here expecting to return and report, Sieur Velarin has done the same, and Sieur Barratorre the same. If we leave no one will know where everyone went of where to meet. I think we should weave in place and stay here.”

The sorceress keeps watch. On impulse she casts Detect Magic to see if she can find any discrepancies within 60’ of the grove the two spellcasters are hiding in.

Velarin issues a counter proposal of air walking to search for a castle

Everyone except Lanliss is at the edge of the trees, Barratore starts heading into town, but that was before the objections of the others.


Lanliss remains in town. He overhears this conversation from around the corner from where he is hiding. Two adult male voices are talking:


”Have you heard about the strangers?”
”No. What strangers? Here in Unity?”
”Yes. Golda told me her two kids saw them. Apparently they talked to Brocken then came into town. Then disappeared!
”Disappeared? That can’t be good.”
”That’s what I’m thinking. Abelard is going to sing falsetto when he hears about this!”
”[The other man snickers.] Come on, let’s tell the gang at Bungos!”

He then hears the two men walk away, excitedly chattering about what the presence of visitors might mean.

Tishe’ courageously plunges into an expected ambush.

Lanliss awaits the others.

Approximately an hour or two has passed since the Keepers first arrived before they decide to enter en masse. Survival DC 15 Highlight to display spoiler: { It appears the source of light, hidden by the clouds, has advanced some, but not near as much as would be expected for the amount of time that has passed.}

As the Keepers that were outside the town approach, they notice that the shepherds all turn to watch, gawking at the procession, but doing nothing else. One suddenly rushes into action as he finally notices one of his charges began to wander away from the flock. He quickly guides it back to the others with his staff.

Once within the town, its border defined by a scattering of buildings, the visitors quickly note that the streets and buildings are all tidy and well maintained. Each house is painted a brilliant color, creating a vibrant mosaic of contrasting hues. Up ahead, one is receiving a fresh coat of paint replacing turquoise, with a brilliant magenta. Where the two colors are present together, it is a bit jarring to gaze at.

Everyone encountered boasts a smile as they pause to watch the newcomers, careful not to stare, but most noticeably interested. Everyone yields any right of way without hesitation and a few nod or lightly bow in recognition of the Keepers’ passing.

A young man, his angular ears betraying a hint of elven blood, is the one randomly queried by Barratore. “A place to drink. Well, sir,” he stammers, pausing to take a look UP at Barratore, “The Black Note is good and, uh, has high ceilings. Go two blocks down,” he continues, gesturing toward the intended direction, “turn at the light purple house--that’s Heimrich’s place, and it will be right up ahead of that.” He smiles weakly, but broadly after he has given his answer.

Barratore thanks the young man with a nod and 'Thank you' and follows the directions to the 'The Black Note'. The minotaur ducks and squeezes through the door and looks about to see if there are any furnishings that might be able to take his mass and weight. Hopefully he finds one and will head to the bar and order a pair of drinks at it and then head to the spot.

'V, from what i know, we don't know where we are going or how to get there. We don't know a thing and we aren't going to by our own, else we would have done it by now. Unless you've been enjoying yourself thus far and have been holding back so we could take in the flora. So I'm going to be social with these good people while Eddie goes and gets the man Lan."

Lanliss stays well hidden and sees the others enter the town; well, except for Edson. He doesn’t see him.

Velarin follows along.

Edson does as well, being cautious to not give away his presence by bumping someone.

Emrys and Tishe’ continue into town.

Barratore follows the prescribed directions to The Black Note.



The tavern is easy to spot. A wooden sign hangs from a bracket above the door. It is bright white with a large black eighth note painted on it. The doors are of standard human size, requiring the minotaur to duck and squeeze, but the bottom of the wooden beams supporting the ceiling inside appears to be about ten feet above the stone floor, requiring Barratore to have to duck only slightly to keep from scarring them with his horns.

Someone must have run ahead to alert the owner, for a flurry of activity greets them as they enter. A few patrons, mugs in hand, are standing along the walls, while several others are busy rearranging the furniture. A small, sturdy table has been cleared and moved to one side in of a much larger rectangular table, obviously intended to function as a makeshift stool for the large guest. Other chairs are being placed around the larger table while the furniture that was displaced by this new arrangement has been repositioned and is in the process of being reoccupied as the Keepers look around.

A flustered human male of middle years, his bald pate shining with sweat, nervously wrings his hands in a white towel hanging from the belt around his matching white apron as the new arrivals enter. “Welcome, welcome”, he says as he gestures to the freshly arranged table. “Welcome to The Black Note. I am Purvis the proprietor of this fine tavern. What will you have, ale or lager?”

From Lanliss’ unique vantage point behind the bystanders, he sees that the townsfolk are curious but cautious about the presence of the Keepers. He notices someone run off, going toward the center of town--a different direction than The Black Note. Lanliss suspects the young boy has been sent to notify or fetch someone.

Barratore sits and tries his best to not destroy anything. "An ale Mr. Purvis, thank you." After the barkeep heads off, "How do ask without asking is where I'm stumped. But if the halfling and our other friend are right, there are multiple 'realms' separated by mists. Each controlled by a power of some kind. So where are we is my question and who is in charge. Our visitor also eluded we might have to ask the power to get to another realm in here."

The barkeep returns and Barratore produces a couple pieces of gold for the drinks, "Thank you Mr. Purvis. Please don't be nervous about me, I'll be extra careful and i thank you for such swift accomodations."

Emrys stays close to the others and comments on Barratore’s reputation.
Lanliss continues to monitor the town from his hidden vantage point.
Velarin enters The Black Note and orders an ale.
Edson checks in with Lanliss then returns to update the others.
Barratore takes a seat and orders an ale. He comments on the challenges of finding out information without revealing too much. He then pays handsomely for the drinks.

Tishe’ cautiously follows along.



The tavern owner’s eyes widen at the sight of the two gold coins Barratore pays. "Thank you, thank you, sir. Your are most generous," he sputters. Purvis quickly motions to someone in back. Soon, a young woman, in a light wool shift, modestly cut, comes to the Keeper’s table bearing a platter with nuts, mushroom caps, hard cheese, and bright orange slices that, based on their apparent texture, might be another type of fungus.

The dark red ale served does not disappoint with its heavy malt and subtle toffee notes. Purvis seems to know his craft. After a moment's departure, he returns with a very large pitcher filled with it an places it on the table.

The other patrons attempt to watch without being obvious, pretending to go about their normal routine in the tavern.

After several minutes have passed, a middle aged man dressed in a simple, but brightly dyed woolen tunic over dark breeches enters the tavern. He walks with the simple grace of someone who earns respect, but doesn’t demand it. He pauses a moment before spotting the Keepers. He then steps forward until he reaches their table, broadly smiling as he does so. When he speaks, his voice is calm and reassuring, a soothing baritone that is almost musical in its tone, “My name is Heimrich, the local healer here. Your presence has, I am sure you have noticed, caused a bit of a, um, commotion here in Unity. Most of us have not seen any visitors in our lifetime. Please do not be alarmed." After a moment's pause, he reaches out toward the back of a nearby chair without grasping it, and asks, "Mind if I join you?”

Barratore is not adept at reading his own kind, let alone those of other species, despite travelling with humans and elves for so long. He joins with V, "Yes, please do."

"We are simply passing through and after a long days journey through the woods, this town with the bright and cheery atmosphere and..." Barratore hoists his ale, "Promise of a good ale, was a gods send." Barratore aims the toast towards Purvis.

Velarin invites Heimrich to join them.
Barratore endorses the invitation and tells Heimrich that they are simply passing through and comments on the cheery atmosphere of Unity, then he compliments Purvis on his ale.
Edson joins Lanliss and suggests they join the others at the tavern.
Tishe’ nerves inform her to avoid drink at this time. She chooses to merely sit and watch.
Emrys keeps his own counsel.


When Barratore mentions having passed through the woods, Heimrich visibly blanches, his eyes widening a moment before regaining his composure. He pauses to take a closer examination of each Keeper, before speaking, “Well, then, you must be tired. Unity has no Inns, but I have a house I can let out to you--it was my mother’s before she passed, and it is right next door to mine.” He pauses a moment in reflection, then continues, “I would need to touch it up a bit and I will put in new flowers to cheer up the place if you would be interested. “

The other patrons appear to be ignoring the Keepers, but it does not take much perceptiveness to realize that that is merely an affectation.

Lanliss and Edson, should they choose to do so, have no issues when they go to The Black Note to rejoin the others.

The young girl who previously brought out the tray looks puzzled by Emrys’ question. “Um, sir,” she finally responds, obviously uncomfortable, “We don’t grow grapes here.”


Tishe’, unable to control her nerves, asks, “How can you be so serene when there are wolves prowling the forest? What other beasties are about? How do you keep safe?”

Edson opts to stay with Lanliss regardless of what he chooses to do.

Velarin does not respond to Heimrich’s offer, but he adds to Tishe’s question, asking "do the wolves not bother the town or its livestock?"

Barratore, however, accepts Heimrich’s offer and awaits a response about wolves.

Tishe’s outburst is answered with a crash of breaking pottery. All eyes turn to the embarrassed serving girl standing near the shards of the platter she dropped at Tishe’s words. Stunned silence permeates The Black Note as she quickly rushes to clean up the mess she has made.

Heimrich is among the first to recover, “You must forgive young Hilda. We avoid mentioning the, um, predators here in Unity.” After a moment’s pause, he quickly adds, “Through no fault of your own, of course. There is no way, as strangers, you could know that.”

He leans in and lowers his voice so that only the Keepers can hear. He speaks to Tishe’ first, “Serenity keeps the monsters away. To show fear invites them to your door. This is how we survive here in Unity.”

After allowing a moment for this to sink in, he then answers Velarin, “Better that the monsters feed on sheep than sons, daughters, wives, husbands, fathers, and mothers.”

He answers any other questions, then rises to leave, “You must be tired after your journey. I need to go prepare my mother’s house for you to stay there. Come whenever you are ready. It’s the light purple house on the corner. You passed it on the way here.”

Tishe’ is surprised: that was an explanation she did not expect. To avoid being a victim one should avoid any mention or even feelings about the problem. The sorcerer’s expression is incredulous, and she opens her mouth to say how crazy that sounds, but stops with her mouth comically open before slowly closing it again.

Young Hilda’s reaction seemed genuine, and she nods at her friends in mutual understanding: what’s crazy in the Wold may not be here. “I will avoid spinning tangles here”, she tells the man sincerely.

As to where the Keepers go, Tishe’ looks to Velarin for leadership decisions.

V is about to tell Heimrich that he has a couple dozen less threats to worry about, but instead, closes his mouth and merely raises a thoughtful eyebrow at the villages response to the problem. V simply nods as the man leaves.

"It appears we are spending the night at Heimrich's dearly deceased mothers house. Ell Barratore, this was your idea...shall we retire shortly and discuss things further, or is there more to do here....besides finish our drinks obviously."

Barratore has several thoughts and old tales from Metascar that fit what seems to be happening here, but here could certainly have its own rules and it would seem one of his earlier musing might not have been so far off. Aloud, Barratore again thanks Heimrich, even in a place such as this, he extended his assistance and the hero of the Woldian League simply accepts it.

Barratore speaks up though, before Heimrich leaves his chair. Leaning in and across the table, he whispers so that only they can hear and his great brown bull eyes lock with him, "Predators IN Unity?" A pause of a dozen heartbeats, and Barratore leans back releasing Heimrich from his gaze.

Barratore picks up his drink, "Aye, let's give the good man about an hour and then retire. Pressing any of these people might be dangerous to their own safety."

An Hour later, Barratore drops another pair of gold coins on the table and takes leave of the Black Note, heading to the brightly painted light purple house on the corner

Lanliss wonders whether to rejoin the others or not.

Tishe’ is surprised by the explanation of the reaction to her words and commits to being careful of what she says further.

Velarin avoids comment and acquiesces to spending the night at the vacant house.

Barratore leans in to Heimrich to ask, “Predators IN Unity?”

After about an hour, he overpays then leads the others to the purple house where they will be spending the night.

Edson is ready to join the others and joins Lanliss in doing so.

Emrys laments the lack of wine and focuses on the new developments.


The townsfolk return to their overt joviality quickly after the broken pottery incident, even while Heimrich was explaining the their reaction.

The healer seems surprised by Barratore’s question and the intensity with which it is asked, but says nothing further. He bows farewell and exits.

When Edson and Lanliss arrive at The Black Note [is Edson visible?] they find a cheerful patronage scattered within, all seemingly happily enjoying their fare, while noticeably avoiding eye contact with any of the Keepers.

The hour passes without much incident with The Black Note appearing to be doing quite the custom. Perhaps word of the visitors has invited the curious to see for themselves. Purvis and Hilda are quite attentive to the Keepers and somehow manage to not neglect the other customers while doing so.
When the Keepers exit The Black Note, it appears that night is in fact falling. The sun behind the clouds seems to have accelerated as it approached the horizon. What vague shadows there were are greatly extended as sunset rapidly approaches. Another noteworthy apparent change noticeable by the Keepers is the absence of the previously persistent distant thunder. Perhaps a clearing of the skies is coming--in this unfamiliar place, the strangers cannot be sure.

The fully furnished house seems pleasant enough though a bit of a squeeze for Barratore. Heimrich comes from upstairs as they arrive and gives them a quick tour before bidding them good night. On the ground floor is a common room, a kitchen area, and a bedroom. Upstairs are two more rooms equipped with two beds each. Three mattresses have been placed together on the floor of the common room in an attempt to accommodate a larger guest. Notably, the tour also includes showing how to secure and bar the doors and windows.

"I don't know what you guys think yet, but currently I'm thinking that we bar the doors and windows, extinguish the lights, and then retire to my dimensional mansion where we are assured that no one is listening, and we should be able to rest in peace. Although... it may be wise to have Edson and Lanliss see if they can find any secret doors in this house before we do. Thoughts?"

Barratore takes in the skies and looming shadows as the group makes the short walk. "Almost as if the darkness is trying to catch you unaware and trap you within." he muses aloud leaning into Lanliss.

Once at the house, he thanks Heimrich for the tour and closes the door behind him as he leaves.

"That was my thinking V, let's lock the place up tight and retire to your mansion." He shrugs, "Sounds good, Lanliss and Edson should give the place scout over to see if there are hidden passages or spy nooks. Wouldn't want folks charging in to snatch us away in the night."

He shoots a wink at Edson, knowing his line of conversation is spooking Lanlis.

Velarin proposes additional lodging precautions besides merely staying in the house and proposes Edson and Lanliss take a closer look.

Barratore muses about the rapid nightfall and affirms Velarin’s proposal.

Tishe’ welcomes the return of the rogues and agrees with the others about lodging security.

Edson, Lanliss, Emrys settle in for the evening.


There are no secret doors found, but at the back of the builtin bookcase, there is a hidden panel, about 8” square that slides open. Inside is a corked crystal quart sized bottle about half full of a yellow tinted clear liquid. Also in the compartment is a small tin cup and thin tin screw top flask.

The evening passes uneventfully in their magnificent lodgings. When the Keepers awake and venture back into their mundane lodging, they are greeted by the sound of a steady, but light rain on the wood shingle roof.

Before too long, a polite knock sounds at the front door of Heimrich’s house.

Once inside the Mansio, Barratore blows out a large breath and finds a chair and calls for a drink.

"I think we are in a sub domain if you will of Koshe Marr. Snake lady said that Koshe Marr was made of multiple realms, each ruled by some power and between them were walls of fog. at teh Center of Koshe Marr is the true realm of M and at the center of that is the palace. I don't think we are in the realm our hlfling friend ended up in. So no Inn to find We have a road onthe other end of town and I think in the morning barring magical insight, we continue on our way and brave the fog and mist once more.

Perhaps play the we are lost card once more and just ask where the road goes, say our thank you's and be on."

Barratore gets a hot bath and a good night sleep

After putting everything back as they found it following the search of the house, V opens up the mansion. After cleaning himself up, and grabbing a biter to eat, the wizard settles down with a nice glass of wine.

"agreed Barratore. It is time to be on our way. We have no idea how long a journey is ahead of us."

Once V has rememorized, and everyone is ready, V follows everyone out of the mansion and closes it. Shortly thereafter, upon hearing the knock at the door, V waits for Lanliss to answer it.

Tishe’ is interested in the flask and casts Detect Poison, then uses her spell-like ability, Arcane Sight, to see if the flask has poison or magic.

Whatever the result, she agrees to put it back, not wanting to attract attention.

“My thoughts weave in the same direction. If there are many realms and surrounded by foggy walls, this must be one of them and not one we have heard of before. It makes me wonder what is the Power and the nightmare of THIS realm. But I’m not curious enough to try to figure it out and bring attention to ourselves! Let’s see if anyone wants to buy the pelts and then ask for a direction of where someone would be who WILL buy the pelts. That keeps our story up and a reason for being on our way.”

She looks to Edson and Lanliss, or someone else to do the actual job of speaking and getting answers.

Lanliss opens the front door, but not without comment from Edson.

Barratore takes advantage of the luxury of the mansion and reminds the others that Koshe Marr is made of multiple realms divided by walls of fog and that they need to move to another realm.

Velarin agrees, relaxes a bit, and awaits learning who is at the door.

Tishe’ checks out the flask, determines that it is neither poisonous nor magical, but of extremely high proof. It appears Heimrich’s mother may have had access to “medicine” other than that provided by her healer son.

Emrys awaits to see the new arrival.

Upon opening the door, Lanliss is greeted by someone who is not likely a half-elf eating demon. Rather, standing before him is a fashionably dressed, slightly portly man of middle years. His silver hair is cut to shoulder length flowing from beneath a large floppy beret of royal blue. Despite the rain, he has kept both dry with the forest green umbrella, now loosely in his left hand, its metal tip resting on the floorboards of the covered porch. A cloak matching the color of his umbrella is drawn at his throat, held in place with a lyre shaped clasp of gold. His garments are mostly hidden by the cloak, but as he moves, flashes of bright colors are occasionally revealed. His long leather boots, though splashed with mud, appear to be of high quality and well suited for traveling in muddy streets. His pale face is ruddy either from exertion, alcohol consumption, or perhaps a combination of the two. Mostly hidden by a bushy mustache and heavy goatee, thin, pink lips curve upward in a friendly smile.

His smile never wavering, he looks through the doorway attempting to see who is present, then says boldly, “Greetings visitors. Allow me to introduce myself. I am Meistersinger Abelard and I wish to personally welcome you on behalf of all the citizens of Unity. I am more than delighted to offer you my assistance in whatever business may have brought you here. Please tell me, how may I help you?”

Tishe’ looks left and looks right. No one is taking the shuttle. With a sigh, the diminutive human woman stands and approaches. She knows she won’t be able to bluff a bard as apparently powerful as this one, so she’s going to have to tell only the truth, but in a way that only tells the surface story.

When Barratore steps through the doorway, the Meistersinger nearly stumbles off the deck and into the mud in an attempt to not impede the massive warrior.

Eyes wide with surprise and possibly even fear, he sputters, “Um, um, might I enquire as to where you obtained these pelts? Please don’t tell me you acquired them here for that is the demesne of the lord of this land and he would not be best pleased to know there are poachers in his forests.” He continues to pace Barratore, his stylish boots picking up more mud in the process. “Where exactly are you headed? Perhaps if you told me your business here beyond selling these, um, pelts, I could save you much time and effort by pointing you in the proper direction.”

Barratore overheard teh comment as well, but Lanliss has already asked and the fighter pauses a bit in the walk to allow everyone to come together and hear the answer.

Barratore points further down the road that then leads out of town and back into the forest. Beyond the pelts I suppose we are travelling to see new things and meet new people. Like you good sir"

Tishe’s face hardens, overhearing the Meistersinger’s muttering. “And since you already know where we got the pelts, I think you would prefer we were to be on our way peacefully rather than... dealing with the Lord of this demense.” And Tishe’ looks pointedly at Abelard.

She looks around to make sure others aren’t around to hear before she continues. “You are the lord, here, aren’t you Abelard? And as a bard, you are magically holding all these people to your spells of niceness in town and fear in the woods. Well, it’s not going to work for us. You can point us down the road or we really mess up your ‘demense’.”

Tishe’ readies a Counterspell to counter any spell Abelard tried to sing up.

Velarin refrains from outwardly talking and curses the inability to communicate telepathically.
Edson enjoys Barratore’s intimidation of the Meistersinger.

Lanliss overhears the Meistersinger’s muttering and asks, “That explains what, exactly?”

Abelard looks startled as if unaware he spoke aloud, then recovering, he answers, “Um, why you are in town, of course.”


Barratore presses, “ You will need to be more specific as to what you consider 'here' I suppose. Though I can assure you we did not poach them."

He perks up considerably at the news that the pelts were not poached and answers, “By here, I mean Unity, where else?”


Barratore continues, “We do not wish to anger the lord of course, might he have a more formal and appropriate title? “

Abelard nods thoughtfully, “My apologies, I assumed you knew. He is the Dark Lord.”


When Barratore points that they are going back into the forest, he pales again and warns, “If you value your lives, do not go into the forest. That is His hunting preserve and no one enters without his leave and lives.”


The minotaur continues, “Beyond the pelts I suppose we are travelling to see new things and meet new people. Like you good sir”
A bit dismayed, he asks, “You mean to tell me you are here entirely on a sightseeing tour?”


"So what lies down the roads from Unity?"

“The forest,” he answers

Abelard’s reaction resembles that of a mouse suddenly aware that a hawk is perched on the branch overhead, unable to run away for fear it will be seen, yet terrified to remain in the open.

Moments pass before the Meistersinger recovers. He stops still in the rain, expecting the others to stop with him. Softly he speaks, barely audible over the steady beat of the downpour, “Please. Don’t. You would not prevail and much grief would come of it. Rather, stay here, enjoy, meet the good people of Unity, but avoid the forest. The full moon concert is tomorrow night at the town amphitheatre. Come, join us. It is a time of great celebration.” He looks at each Keeper before continuing, “If any of you have musical ability, we would love to have you perform for us. It is an open stage.” He turns to go, parting with, “Should you need me, my house is opposite the amphitheatre stage. Good day.”

Surprisingly nimbly for one of his girth, he departs quickly down the rain stroked street, no doubt anxious to separate himself from the others.

The Keepers find themselves at an intersection. As for the rest of town, all buildings are brightly colored, with one exception. At one corner stands a two story building entirely of stone, except for its heavily reinforced door. Its only windows are small, located near the roof, and barred. The single door is atop a set of four steps placing it a few feet above street level.

A soft chuckle can be heard through the rain. A handsome halfling is standing on a covered second story balcony next door to the stone building. He waves to the strangers, “Welcome to Unity, Leaguers. I am of the Sages Guild myself. Name is Manfrit. If you come around to the side door, I will let you in out of the rain.” He chuckles as he looks at Barratore. “Um. It will be a bit tight, I’m afraid.”

Barratore straightens as he does not like games as such that he thinks this man is playing. The forest indeed. As he squares his shoulders to throttle down on him, the man.

Barratore listens to what he says in response to Tishe and his mind tries to take it in even as his warrior spirit of name and clan rage for the challenge. He musters a simple reply, "We cannot abide to stay here good sir."

The man departs and Barratore watches after him. "I believe him Tishe, but a good call to dare the truth from someone. We stand on better gorund." Barratore swivels towards the halfling and the only plain building. Sages Guild....in over his head

Tishe’ shakes her head as if to clear it. “I don’t trust Unity, it is too... nice for a place like this. A trap for the unwary. And anyone who claims any power here must be a minion or the Dark Lord himself. I wasn’t dating truth, Sieur Barratorre, I was calling his bluff.”

The Halfling calls out. “Like this one. I don’t trust him, and think we should try our luck in the for-...”. Tishe’ doesn’t finish her sentence, for Barratorre has already made a commitment. Still wary of anything welcoming from this place, Tishe’ follows the minotaur.

I do agree that once this conversation is over, we need to get far from here as quickly as possible. Perhaps Emrys' windwalk spell might be our best answer. Assuming it works here."

Barratore tells Abelard they cannot abide to stay here. At Manfrit’s call, he goes right in.

Tishe’ doesn’t trust Unity, says so, and include the halfling in her judgement...but follows Barratore when he commits to go see him.
Velarin thinks the halfing could prove helpful, or at least interesting. He is, however, ready to leave and suggest windwalking.
Edson agrees with Tishe’ and is ready to depart.
Emrys offers to try the windwalk now, knowing it can last a long time.
Lanliss follows the others into Manfrit’s place.



Manfrit’s place is the upper floor of the building adjacent to the stone structure and is reached by exterior wooden stairs. Eight visitors stretch the main room’s capacity, with one being large, it is quite “cozy” indeed. The halfling seems unaware, or perhaps unconcerned, of the tight quarters and is busily warming up what appears to be a very large pot of tea. The furnishings are sized for their inhabitant and are simple and functional. On the wall opposite a small shrine to Gargul sets on a shelf mounted to the wall, the smoke of several sticks of incense curl up to the ceiling, filling the room with a spicy aroma. The host is dressed simply in a tunic, vest, and leggings, all of gray and made of wool.

“Never mind the water,” he says as the group crowds in. “The rain should end tonight and I can open some windows to dry things out.”

As he moves about, trying to make places for each to sit, a silver amulet in the shape of the gray lidless eye bounces on a chain around his neck. The only other adornment he wears is a badge pinned to his chest in the shape of three silver interlocking rings. Fussing with the tea, he asks, “First off, what year is it in the Wold? I think I have been here about a year, but often time doesn’t move at the same pace in different planes.”

"So what brought you here and was here your actual intention" Barratore knows Manfrit already knows teh WLA badge he not only wears but has prominently displayed on his animated shield and decides that is the 'true' story he will go with.

"We are with the Woldian League and are frankly a bit lost. Can you help us with a bit of geography on where here is in relation to elsewhere?"

V takes the best look he can at the silver amulet and the badge(perception 46) from where he sits, and tries to figure out if each is magical in nature as well as what it's power is, and also the significance or meaning if they are symbolic. V waits to hear the Halflings response to Barratore before speaking, and quickly calculates how long the man had actually been here.

Edson squeezes through the crowded room. He keeps his mouth shut, but looks around making sure this is not some elaborate trap to end the keepers. Once sure there is nothing to hurt them, he finally speaks up.... " so,.. whats the skinny on this town. A peaceful little hamlet out of the storybooks, all in the middle of an infernal demon filled pocket dimension. Doesn't seem like it fits the surroundings. "

Tishe’, when younger, had a mercurial attention span, but she was able to (mostly) compensate as she became more experienced and mature. This place, however... The Sorceress is visibly flip-flopping between fear, suspicion, and her natural belief that people are generally good.

Her suspicions melt away as she spots the Gargul emblem around his neck. “Anyone who would wear that in... here... is not on that person’s side.” She turns to Manfrit, “what is the last you know?”, she counters, but then will tell him the significant events that she knows of all the way back to her childhood and the Year of Ascension, the Rise of Eberyon, the Migration of the Southern Continent, the Sarr Rebirth, and the fall of the Gods of Testing. Tishe’ is counting on her companions to get the answers they seek in an even exchange of information from this Gargul-aligned person of the Sages Guild.

Barratore makes himself reasonably comfortable. He tells of the other guild members they rescued and gives him the date. He asks, "So what brought you here and was here your actual intention" then asks explains, "We are with the Woldian League and are frankly a bit lost. Can you help us with a bit of geography on where here is in relation to elsewhere?"

Velarin recognizes the amulet to be a holy symbol of Gargul and the badge to be that of an Associate level member in the Sages Guild. He listens to Manfrit’s response.
Edson looks around the room carefully and finds nothing out of the ordinary or anything that appears to pose a potential threat. He asks " so,.. whats the skinny on this town. A peaceful little hamlet out of the storybooks, all in the middle of an infernal demon filled pocket dimension. Doesn't seem like it fits the surroundings. "

Tishe’ is comforted by the indications that they are with a devotee of Gargul and helps with the estimation of how long Manfrit has been out of the Wold.

Emrys waits for the call to leave.


It appears that Manfrit has been here about 5 years by Woldian reckoning though he feels only a year has passed. He is quite interested in news of the Wold, but eventually the Keepers turn the conversation to more immediate concerns.

Barratore asks "So what brought you here and was here your actual intention?"
The halfling sets back on his stool and sighs as he reflects upon what is obviously a painful memory, before answering, “I accompanied a friend and fellow guild member here on a quest to learn more of this place. Grendus was slain by wolves. I assume you encountered the Lonely Road with its questions of my greatest need? Well, mine, being lost and alone, was sanctuary. That is how I ended up here.”

Barratore then asks about the geography. Manfrit answers, “This place is called Unity. I assume you know that already. This town and the surrounding forest are ruled by a man named Malghard. North of here is a place called Hallowight, purported to be inhabited by undead.” He pauses to look at the shrine before continuing, “It is of specific interest to me, but I fear I am not capable of safely going there alone as to leave this place and go to another requires another trip through the mist.” He visibly shudders at the memory.

He turns to face Edson when the elf asks about Unity’s appearance. “Dear sir, these good people are survivors. They live in a harsh land with constant danger. To venture into the neighboring woods is too dangerous to even consider. To go out most nights is to invite predators to your doorstep. We sing, we eat, we paint, we make joy when we can, for death can be a moment away. “

He leans in, lowering his voice to a bare whisper, “This land is overrun with werewolves. One does not tread lightly when the predator lives among you.

He then stands up and takes the few steps required to reach the stove. He lifts the pot and cheerfully asks, “Now who would like some tea?”

Barratore listens to Manfrit and nods, he was suspecting something along those lines as soon as the bard said 'in, Unity.' "Werewolves fits the motif, but I am confused at why any would participate in a great outdoor concert under the stars and moon then. Like taking the kids to the Drop Off. I assume there will be chips." Barratore sits back a bit, he did not like tea but it felt he should excpet, maybe simply hold the cup until it was time to leave...

"Yes, Manfrit, thank you." turning a bit to the others, "We might need, pardon the expression, to go back into the mists with a more unified response."

Barratore hopes the others pick up on what he is implying as he knows they cannot say more if front on anyone.

"Manfrit, If we attend tonight, and it goies as I suspect, would it bring greater harm to the people of Unity long term. Will revenge be taken upon them?"

"I believe the Meistersinger said that tonight was the full moon. As Barratore said, shouldn't it be a night to lock and bar the doors and windows?"

"Also, Do you know if it's possible to travel between realms, above the mist? to fly over it? and lastly, what in Hallowight is of interest to you? surely the undead would be just as dangerous as the wolves?"

V also does not quite get what Barratore is trying to imply, but does not like the feel of this one bit. They should probably leave quickly. Picking fights with the areas monsters, or Lords of the land, would not help this stealth mission in the least.

Tishe' listens carefully to Manfrit, and the discussion of the Keepers. She assumes Barratorre's comment is something from minotaur culture, (the Sarr knows the others have twitted her about her own Southern Continent accent!), and chooses to ignore words like Dropoff and Chips.

Manfrit's own story makes the matronly woman remember her own answer to the Lonely Road. "I told the road I just wanted to help people. The people may be here in Unity for sanctuary, but doesn't that mean they need help even more? I want to get our mission done, but I want to be who I am as well. These people are victims of Koshe Marr, and need defending. I say we go to the concert and be ready to kill werewolves."

He thinks Wind Walk would be the perfect disguise and mode of travel ... they would be completely invisible to everything within the mists. "Or we can attempt to Shadow Walk ... we haven't done that in a while," he says in a hushed tone.

To clarify: This conversation with Manfrit occurs right after the conversation with the Meistersinger. The full moon festival Abelard invited the Keepers to is tomorrow night.


Barratore is not surprised to hear of werewolves. He asks if an outdoor concert is advised.

“Surprisingly,” responds the halfling, “It is the safest time to be out at night. I have not spoken to anyone who recalls anyone being attacked during the festival.”


Lanliss worries about werewolves and attending the full moon festival.

Velarin comments that the Meistersing said that tonight is the full moon and suggests staying inside seems more prudent and asks other questions.

Tishe’ shares her own answer to the Lonely Road and wonders if protecting the people of Unity from werewolves is why she was sent here.

Edson responds, “"Werewolves... of course it has to be werewolves.”

Emrys listens and ponders traveling by air or shadow.



Manfrit seems to enjoy the reaction to his revelation about the werewolves. As each asks there questions, the halfling attempts to answer.

Barratore: "Manfrit, If we attend [tomorrow] tonight, and it goes as I suspect, would it bring greater harm to the people of Unity long term. Will revenge be taken upon them?"
The halfling pauses a moment to think about this before answering, “It should not be a problem. The festival has always been safe in the past. This is actually the one night when it is safe to be out.”

Lanliss: "If we attend....we don't have to do we ?"
“You are visitors here with no obligations, but why would you miss the opportunity to see something new?” Of course, you are speaking to a member of the Sages Guild.

Valerin: "I believe the Meistersinger said that tonight was the full moon. As Barratore said, shouldn't it be a night to lock and bar the doors and windows?"
Manfrit nods, then answers, “Here in Prohovia, every night is a full moon, sir.”

He then goes on to explain that though each night has a full moon, only one in thirty are red and that one is due tomorrow night. On each red moon there is a festival in Unity filled with singing and feasting.

Valerin: "Also, Do you know if it's possible to travel between realms, above the mist? to fly over it? "
“As far as I know the mists are unavoidable. To move from realm to realm one must pass through them” Again he shudders at the thought.

Valerin: what in Hallowight is of interest to you? surely the undead would be just as dangerous as the wolves?“As a devotee of Gargul,” he pauses to look at the shrine on the wall, “I wish to see how such an abomination for myself. However, I am well aware of the danger which is why I remain here.”

Tishe’: I told the road I just wanted to help people. The people may be here in Unity for sanctuary, but doesn't that mean they need help even more? Manfrit is shocked by the gentle appearing woman’s words, then he starts shaking his head slowly. “The werewolves rule. I fear even a group as formidable as you would not prevail, not to mention the collateral damage.”

“The wolf folk typically leave Unity alone and don’t reside here.”



After a moment he tilts his head, then turns back to look at Tishe’. “Mission?” he asks, suddenly very intent. “What mission?”

V inwardly slaps his head as the Halfling caught Tishe's slip of the tongue. The wizard tries to quickly think of a way to explain it away, but being that diplomacy, sidestepping questions, and a quick tongue were relatively foreign to him.

Fortunately Lanliss was able to put the matter in question, leaving the best option at this point to exit.

V makes to stand and start heading for the door. "Well, we really should be going now. We have used up far too much of Manfrit's time and hospitality."

Barratore leans back, "Every night is a full moon but some are red and on those nights, Unity has a festival where everyone is safe." Barratore inhales and tries to think, but the Mission is brought up, Manfrit asks and V gets all wierd. Barratore had no answer on that, but Manfrit had offered a few other things as well, like collateral damage if the group went werewolf hunting. It was that sort of thing he was concerned with.

V stands and Barratore tilts his head in a bit of confusion. Other than going into the mist, the group had nowhere to go. Barratore falls in line though, setting the undrank tea down, "Thank you, good tea."

Barratore considers the implications of attacking werewolves and is surprised that Velarin is trying to exit, but follows his lead.
Tishe’ attempts to cover her slip with a lie.

Emrys and Edson watch and listen.


“Hmmm,” replies Manfrit to Tishe’s explanation. “Perhaps I can help you recover him or her if I knew more about the circumstances of his disappearance. How long ago did he disappear? Do you know which realm he went to?” He pauses a moment then suggest, “You might want to ask Lord Malghard. He’s actually a pleasant fellow.”

His body language clearly shows he would rather his visitors not leave, but he makes no move to stop them.

Our boy does not seem to be here and so we have to chat amongst ourselves as whether or not we show tonight or simply get moving. As far as realms go, we don't even know what realms there are or how they relate to each other. Tishe’ thankful to have recovered from her slip of the tongue, follows up “I want to help others, and you have said helping here may be more harmful in the long run. Manfrit listens intently as Barratore and Tishe’ make their plea. He thinks awhile, using the refilling of the teapot as an excuse to do so. He then goes to a small desk and returns with some paper and a pen and sketches a crude map for Barratore. It reveals that he has little knowledge outside of Unity. There are three roads leading from Unity. One is from the gate that the Keepers entered on. One leads north through the mists to the realm of the undead and the third leads into the woods to Malghard’s lodge. As he sketches he explains, “I’m told that Malghard lives in a lodge. Although I have not seen it, what I have heard would indicate that it is not a castle. And I have heard nothing of a castle in Koshe Marr. I only know of the road to the undead realm. By all accounts it is no place for the living. If your friend went that way, then, I am sorry to say, he is probably lost forever.”

"Castle sounds like our best next move...unfortunately. Frankly I do not think it will be THE castle we are looking for, Wardd does not like us that much. Any ideas how we get any useful information? I really don't feel we are any closer to anything than when we were first presented with nothing to go on. The mists will be all about our greatest need again right?

What if we all put forth that our greatest need is the see the castle of Marteus? Mist takes us there, we shoot in, swipe the gemstone engine thingy while our allies do the big distraction thing and get out?"

Edson is pleased with Barratore’s success.
Tishe’ thanks Manfrit and suggests moving to the undead realm, while deferring to Velarin.
Velarin agrees that the best course is to proceed there and without delay.
Barratore waits until they leave Manfrit before commenting. He does not think that the castle they are looking for is in the undead realm. He then suggests returning to the mists and stating that their greatest need is seeing the castle of Marteus.
Emrys follows along.

The halfling seems genuinely concerned for their safety, but does not try to dissuade them his final words being, “If you make it out and your path brings you back to Unity, please be sure to stop by.” He watches the Keepers from the open doorway as they return to the rain and mud, oblivious to the spatter of rain into his own entry way.

Back to Heimrich’s? To the road? Somewhere else?

Regardless of which direction the Keeper’s go, each notices a young man attempting to hide in the doorway of the green painted house on the corner across from the intersection leading to Manfrit’s and opposite of the stone building.

That sense of dread continues to plague him. The dry mouth is now accompanied by a faint scent of decay. He curses himself for not recognizing the taste of necromancy. Even his ring of undead control feels cold and tightly coiled around his finger. His need, as stated to the mist, was to discover the truth of his supernatural birth. Was this path to undeath leading him that conclusion?

"We could Wind Walk to our destination, but traveling as creatures of mist through the fog will make us virtually invisible to each other. We could easily become separated. We could Shadow Walk, while our path would be swift and hidden, this realm would be difficult to discern from behind the shadow's veil. We could easily overshoot our mark."

"Worth a shot Barratore. If it asks us our greatest need, the answer is to go to the castle of Marteus."

"Hope your fancy undead controlling ring is up to the task Emrys. looks like we are going it on foot. At least for now. The mists complicate the other options too much, and for all we know, they are some sort of dimensional movement. Nothing is for sure in this realm."

"I doubt Marteus's place is in the undead realm, so I think our best bet is to move through the undead realm as fast as possible once we get through the mists. The master of the realm is probably some hefty and nasty undead creature. Possibly a Liche or Vampire.

Barratore is not up for Wind Walk, "Too long to get back to normal and we are not invulnerable in Mist form" Shadow Walk is a no go for the fighter as well The Realm of Shadow in Koshe Marr is not something he is eager to experience

"To Manfrit, If we can, I think we should try and get back here and help him get home. Lets, take the road towards the Castle and if we are asked we answer, if not we'll see what the castle has in store"

Barratore looks over at the young man and pivots to walk over to him. Dropping down to sit on his haunches, the minotaur takes in the boy. "And what curiosity do you have that I can solve young man?"

Emrys continues to be plagued by a sense of dread. Perhaps his destiny lies in the realm of the undead? He offers wind walking or shadow walking as travel options.
Edson is amused by the poor shadowing attempt and also informs the others of their observer.
Velarin affirms the suggestion to confront the Road again and discusses the intricacies of this plane. He expresses doubt that the undead realm will be their final destination.
Tishe’ is ready to move on and heads away from their watcher.
Barratore, however, takes the direct approach and asks the boy “ "And what curiosity do you have that I can solve young man?"


As Barratore approaches, the young man’s eyes widen greatly and what little color he had in his already pale complexion completely flees his face. When Barratore speaks, the boy’s lips move, but no words come out. After a few seconds of failing to summon words, his eyes well up with tears, and the boy suddenly turns and runs away, his feet wildly splashing mud as he flees down the street.

In regards to his ring, Emrys says, "I hope so, V ... I certainly hope so."

The mute boy's reaction was quite telling, he thinks ... well, maybe not so much.

V follows Barratore into the mist leading to the realm of the undead once the group arrives at it.

"Remember to stay close. We aren't going to be able to see much. That bubble thing of yours was pretty handy last time Emrys'. We may need it again. I can't handle the beating that Barratore can."

Barratore points his hooves towards the mist and the road leading out of town towards the castle and starts walking. As they clear town, but before entering the mists,

Lanliss runs to stop the fleeing boy.
Emrys says the boy acts as if he saw a ghost.
Velarin proposes leaving for the mist immediately, and reminds Emrys of the efficacy of his antilife spell last time they were in the mists.
Barratore stops Lanliss from his pursuit and requests protection spells.
Tishe’ has no spells to add other than what are already active.
Edson is amused by the reaction of their tail.


Resolute and guided by Manfrit’s sketched map, the Keepers ignore their not-so-discrete observer, and head toward the northern road intent on reaching the undead realm and experiencing the mists once again. The steady rains continue, turning the hard packed dirt of the streets to a soggy slog. The citizens of Unity stay mostly indoors, but an occasional rain drenched soul is seen quickly moving about, obviously on some necessary errand. As always, the residents keep out of the Keepers way, smiling and waving as they pass.

Once the travelers make it to the northern edge of town, they see it is surrounded by open ground just as the southern edge was. The forest edge is about a mile away. As they travel further away from town, the rain subsides, diminishing entirely by the time the Keepers have made it to the forest’s edge. The clouds, however, remain, enshrouding the countryside in depressing gloom.

About one hundred yards into the woods, a near solid wall of fog obscures the road ahead, stretching into the woods on either side. The Keepers, connected by hand and rope as before, once again enter the gray void.

Completely immersed in fog, there is no doubt that they are once again in the engulfing vapors that divide this realm. It is so thick that no one can see their hands at the ends of their arms. The road feels like packed earth, but neither eyes nor ears can confirm this. The fog is so heavy and thick, that beyond obstructing sight, it dampens sound as well. Once again the Keepers are in the cold clammy grip of this murky fog. It seeps into clothes and the very pores of the skin.

Before too long, the awaited voices return. Each Keeper is greeted with a cacophony of snickers and mirthless laughter. Then, silence. Silence made even more tangible by the dampening impact of the all encompassing fog.

Subjectively infinite moments pass before a single voice asks in a raspy whisper, “What is your greatest need?”

The familiar road and call comes up and Tishe’ responds as the Keepers discussed. “My greatest need is Marteus’ Castle. The Castle of Marteus.”

Lanliss gives upthe chase prematurely .
'Nope', he said to himself....
He was smart enough not to get into troubles with Barratore.

Lanliss feels bad from this feeling of vapors and mist.
"My greatest need is Marteus Castle", He says.....it truly was his greatest need...whatever it took to get out of this ......horror inducing thing or phenomena

Bumps arise on Velarins arms as they approach the fog, and a minor feeling of dread fills him. "I hate this place" he mumbles to himself. "Retirement is starting to sound like a good idea".

V follows the others, as before, ignoring the voices as best as possible until hearing the voice that asks them their greatest need. V responds "My greatest need is to go to the castle of Marteus."

Edson is starting to get annoyed with the whole situation, and the fog wasn't helping. He slogs along with the others, and then the voices start.
" Marteus's castle would be a good start." he yells back to the voices.

Barratore takes a deep breath and exhales for as long as he can to keep from having to breath in the mists for as long as possible. The others were counting on his strength here and Metascar' wisdom of battle and stories of glory were of no use to him now. It unnerved him greatly, that the fog, the silence and that unnerved him even more. Barratore draws his sword and grips it tightly and out in front of himself as his pace slows to ensure the others are keeping up.

The voices return as does the question and the minotaur issues a silent prayer to Imod that he suggestion is not the Keepers death sentence. Then utters aloud, "My greatest need is to find the castle of Marteus"
